The harder workout. The early morning. The extra meeting. The dinner plans. The school drop-off, workday, workout, bedtime - and somehow still have enough left to do it all again tomorrow.

And then there are weeks when the exact same routine feels like too much.

For a long time, we thought consistency meant showing up the same way no matter what.

Same workouts. Same energy. Same expectations.

But lately, we’ve been thinking about consistency differently.

Maybe consistency isn’t doing the same thing every day. Maybe it’s getting better at knowing what you need that day.

WHEN TO PUSH.

There are days when we genuinely have more to give.

Our bodies feel strong. Our minds feel clear. We slept well. We feel motivated rather than depleted.

Those are the days we want the harder workout. We add the weight. We take the meeting. We make the plans. We lean into whatever feels challenging because we actually have the capacity for it.

And there’s something really good about pushing yourself when you know you can.

Not because you have to.

Because you want to.

WHEN TO PAUSE.

Then there are the other days.

Maybe we didn’t sleep enough. Maybe the kids were up. Maybe work feels especially heavy. Maybe our bodies are sore, our patience is shorter, or mentally we’re just… full.

We used to be much more likely to push through anyway.

Now?

We’re learning to listen.

Sometimes that means swapping the intense workout for Pilates or a walk. Sometimes it means going to bed instead of answering one more email. Sometimes it’s saying no to dinner plans we would normally force ourselves to make.

And sometimes it’s simply accepting that today doesn’t need to be our most productive day.

The pause doesn’t always have to be physical.

Sometimes your body has energy and your mind doesn’t.

That counts too.

THE PART WE’RE TRYING TO UNLEARN.

We live in a world that makes everything feel like it needs to be optimized.

Our workouts. Our mornings. Our skin. Our food. Our sleep. Our productivity.

There is always something we could supposedly be doing better.

And we’re all for the things that genuinely make us feel better - but we’re becoming less interested in turning taking care of ourselves into another thing we have to perform perfectly.

Because wellness shouldn’t become another source of pressure.

There is a difference between challenging yourself and constantly overriding yourself.

We’re learning that difference.

Maybe one week you work out five times and feel incredible.

The next, three is enough.

Maybe one day you want to be around everyone you love.

The next, you need an hour alone.

Maybe you wake up ready to tackle the entire list.

And sometimes the healthiest thing you can do is decide that half of it can wait until tomorrow.

None of that means you’re inconsistent.

It means you’re paying attention.

And maybe that’s the version of consistency we’re interested in now:

Not doing the same thing every day.
Not always pushing harder.
Just getting better at knowing when to push - and when to pause.

Finishing a product might actually be the most telling beauty review there is.

And because we both have very sensitive skin, we’re especially picky about what makes it past the testing phase and into our actual routines.

SKINCEUTICALS

Purifying Cleanser

This one isn’t a new discovery.

It’s been on the counter for over 16 years.

Through different routines, different skin phases, and countless other cleansers coming and going, this is the one that has never really left.

And if you only have time for one cleansing step, this is it.

It gets everything off - makeup, SPF, the day - without leaving skin feeling stripped or tight. You get that genuinely clean feeling without feeling like you’ve taken everything good off your skin along with it.

And this is important: waterproof mascara.

We have tried cleansers that somehow leave us with half of our eye makeup still on. This gets everything off for us without requiring endless rubbing.

No raccoon eyes the next morning.

It also contains glycolic acid, so you’re getting some gentle exfoliation while you cleanse. We notice the difference especially with those little bumps and areas of texture - it helps keep skin feeling smooth and clear without adding another step to the routine.

We love a double cleanse when there’s time for it, but real life is real life. Some nights, there is time for one cleanser before bed.

This is the one.

How we use it: On its own when we’re short on time, or as the first cleanse followed by micellar water when we want to make sure every last trace is gone.

Would we repurchase? After 16+ years, we think that question has been answered.

DIEUX

Instant Angel Lipid-Rich Firming Moisturizer

This is tube number six.

Which probably tells you more than anything else we’re about to say.

Instant Angel is one of those products we don’t really rotate out. It’s a richer moisturizer, but somehow never feels heavy - and that distinction is exactly why we keep coming back to it.

The formula is packed with the things we want when skin is feeling dry or depleted: ceramides and lipids to support the skin barrier, plus glycerin, urea and squalane for hydration.

It gives skin that cushioned, deeply moisturized feeling and leaves behind the best healthy, dewy finish.

We’d especially recommend this one if your skin leans dry. But this isn’t something we put away when winter ends.

It stays in the routine all summer, too.

It absorbs beautifully, works under makeup, and somehow gives us the benefits of a richer cream without that thick layer sitting on the skin.

It’s also the moisturizer we love when our skin needs a little extra - after actives, after travel, when the weather changes, or when the barrier is just feeling off.

Six tubes later, we think it’s safe to call this more than a phase.

How we use it: Morning or night, year-round. Especially when skin is dry, dehydrated or needs a little extra support.

MILANI

Make It Last Dewy Setting Spray

This was such an unexpected find.

We test products at every price point, and this is exactly why. Milani’s Make It Last Dewy started as one of those let’s just try it products and somehow became the spray we kept reaching for at the very end of our makeup.

The reason we love it isn’t necessarily because we need our makeup locked in for 16 hours.

It’s what it does to the makeup right after you spray it.

After concealer, blush, bronzer, powder - whatever the day called for - we mist this over everything and it almost melts the layers together.

Makeup looks less like makeup sitting on top of skin and more like actual skin again.

The finish is dewy without crossing into greasy or overly shiny, which is an important distinction. Especially when we’ve used a little more powder or our skin is looking flat, a few sprays bring everything back to life.

It’s also one of those products that proves a good find doesn’t need to be expensive.

How we use it: The very last step of makeup. Spray, let it settle, and leave it alone.

Would we repurchase? Already earned its permanent spot.

Gold Lust Repair & Restore Shampoo + Conditioner

This is one of those duos…The shampoo gives you that really clean feeling without leaving hair stripped, and the conditioner adds softness and moisture without weighing everything down.

But the reason we keep coming back to Gold Lust is how our hair feels after - soft, smooth, shiny and noticeably healthier.

It’s especially good when hair has been through a lot - color, heat styling, postpartum, sun, travel - and is starting to feel a little dry or less manageable. It gives hair that conditioned, silky feeling while still leaving it with movement.

How we use it: As our regular shampoo + conditioner whenever our hair is feeling dry, damaged or just needs a reset.

Event Spray Gel

If you hate hairspray because you hate the feeling of hairspray, this is for you.

We want hold, but we still want our hair to move.

Nothing crunchy. Nothing stiff. Nothing that makes you afraid to run your fingers through it.

Maen’s Event Spray Gel gives us that sweet spot.

We use it for smoothing, shaping and keeping everything where we put it, particularly when we’re doing a slicker style or trying to tame flyaways.

It gives enough control to make the hair look polished, but it doesn’t leave behind that hard shell that some traditional hairsprays can.

And somehow, even with the hold, the hair still feels like hair.

It’s become one of those styling products we don’t really think about anymore - we just automatically grab it. Which is usually how we know something has officially made it into the routine.

Hydration Peptide Cream

This is exactly what we want from an everyday moisturizer.

Deeply hydrating, but somehow still lightweight.

It gives skin that soft, plump, properly moisturized feeling without any heaviness - and layers beautifully with everything else in the routine.

The texture is what makes this one so easy to live with. It absorbs beautifully and doesn’t require us to rethink what we’re putting underneath or on top of it.

It’s formulated with peptides and hydrating ingredients, but what matters to us in real life is how our skin feels when we use it:

Comfortable, soft and properly hydrated.

We also love that it works morning or night. Under makeup, it creates a smooth, hydrated base without feeling heavy. At night, it gives us enough moisture that our skin still feels comfortable when we wake up.

Basically: an easy yes. Just a really good moisturizer.

REALE ACTIVES

Cleansing Balm

Double cleansing is one of those steps that sounds excessive until you start doing it - and then suddenly washing your face once doesn’t feel quite complete.

This is our first cleanse.

We massage the Reale Actives Cleansing Balm onto dry skin to start breaking down makeup, SPF and everything else that’s accumulated throughout the day.

One important distinction:

We don’t expect it to get absolutely everything off.

And that’s not why we use it.

For us, a cleansing balm’s job is to loosen and melt down that first layer so our cleanser can come in afterward and finish the job.

We much prefer doing that to aggressively scrubbing at our skin or expecting one product to somehow do every single thing.

It leaves the skin feeling comfortable rather than stripped, and it makes that second cleanse much more effective.

How we use it: Massage onto dry skin, rinse, then immediately follow with cleanser. The SkinCeuticals above makes a very good second step here, too.

Would we repurchase? Yes. Especially if makeup + SPF are part of your everyday routine.

Sometimes all it takes is a few intentional hours to completely shift how you feel.

At Camp Ora, we started with fascia flossing movement by the sweet Bonnie Crotzer (we both never did this before - if you have back pain, hip pain, or any pain, you need to check her out!) before settling into a guided meditation led by the bad ass Jamie Graber along with acupuncture led by the iconic healer Gabriel Sher & Ora Space. It was one of those experiences that’s hard to put into words.

Lying there in complete stillness, we were guided to visualize the life we’re building, the women we want to become, and what we hope to create. Somewhere between the meditation and the acupuncture, Kate and I both got emotional. It felt like someone had finally given us permission to quiet all the noise and simply listen to ourselves.

It was grounding. Empowering. And honestly, something we’ll be thinking about for a long time.

Then we spent a wellness morning with Melissa Wood and Kim Strother and if you’ve ever taken one of their pilates classes, you know exactly what we mean when we say their energy is contagious (especially together!)

Melissa has this incredible way of reminding you that feeling good doesn’t have to mean spending hours in the gym. Sometimes 15 to 30 intentional minutes is enough to completely shift your body, your mindset, and your entire day.

And let us tell you…those tiny, controlled movements? They sneak up on you. We walked out feeling amazing…and a few hours later? Every muscle was saying hello. (In the best way.)

What struck us most wasn’t just the movement or the meditation- it was the mindset behind both experiences.

Both reminded us that slowing down isn’t something we earn after we’ve checked every box. It’s something we need in order to show up as our best selves.

As mothers to young children, we’re constantly pouring into everyone else. Our children. Our partners. Our work. Our friends. We become so focused on taking care of everyone around us that we forget we’re allowed to need care, too.

And there’s something incredibly powerful about being surrounded by women who remind you of that. Women who encourage you to move because it feels good. To breathe deeply. To get quiet. To reconnect with yourself.

We left this weekend feeling lighter. More inspired. More present. More like ourselves.

A little reminder we’re taking into this week:

Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish.

It’s one of the most generous things you can do- for yourself, and for everyone who gets to experience the best version of YOU.

It's a handful of small shifts, stacked on top of each other.

Lately, I've made a few changes that I wasn't expecting to stick- and they have. I feel more energized, more like myself, and honestly a little less like I'm running on fumes.

This one surprised me the most.

Every morning now, I make a coconut water matcha with kefir and a little maple syrup.

But the earlier I start winding down, the earlier I actually fall asleep, and the better I feel the next morning. Every time.

So now it's non-negotiable: out of the house, every day, even if it's just for twenty minutes.

Finally Finding a Skincare Routine That Works

I have dry, sensitive skin, and a history of perioral dermatitis- so this took time.

I worked closely with my dermatologist to land on a combination that's hydrating first, with a retinol and azelaic acid worked in where my skin can actually handle it.

Now it's five or six steps, and honestly? It's become meditative. A few quiet minutes that are just mine.

Getting Serious About Supplements (and Peptides)

I won't pretend I'm not fully in the supplement and peptide era of my life.

But it's made a real difference. I went from feeling like I was running on fumes to actually having gas in the tank again.

Putting on a Real Outfit Every Day

It would be so easy to live in leggings and the same soft top on repeat. Some days I still do.

But I've noticed that actually getting dressed- even if it's just a slick pony, a tank, and shorts- does something for me mentally.

It's not about effort. It's about starting the day like I mean it.

Lifting Instead of Chasing Cardio Highs

In my 20s it was double Soul Cycle, a run after, hot yoga, Barry's- back to back to back.

I'd finish so hungry and so depleted I'd overeat without fail.

Now I'm lifting three times a week, mixing in slower yoga, and just walking and staying active in between.

I feel leaner, stronger, and I'm never starving the way I used to be. No more overeating just to recover from my own workout.

What I've Learned

None of these are dramatic.

None of them require a total life overhaul.

They're just the small, repeatable things that- when I actually do them- make me feel like myself again.

But I don’t use it every night.

On the nights I take a break, I keep things really simple. No layering five serums. No complicated routine. Just products that make my skin feel clean, hydrated, and happy.

Here’s exactly what I use.

Step 1: SkinCeuticals Glycolic Renewal Cleanser

I’m very picky about cleansers because I hate when my skin feels tight after washing it.

This one removes makeup, sunscreen, and long-wear makeup without drying my skin out. It also contains glycolic acid, so while you’re cleansing, you’re getting a gentle exfoliation that leaves your skin feeling noticeably smoother and brighter over time.

One thing I always do? I massage it into my skin for about a minute before rinsing. It makes a bigger difference than you’d think.

Step 2: La Roche-Posay Micellar Water

This is the step almost everyone skips.

Even after cleansing, my cotton pad almost always picks up leftover makeup- especially around my eyes and hairline.

Micellar water is one of those products that doesn’t feel exciting, but once you start using it, it’s hard to go back.

Think of it as making sure you’re actually starting with a clean canvas.

Step 3: Sea Buckthorn Oil

Instead of reaching for another serum, I usually use sea buckthorn oil.

Whenever my skin feels dry, stressed, or like I’ve overdone it with actives, this is what I reach for.

It’s packed with nourishing fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamin E, which help support a healthy skin barrier and lock in moisture.

It’s also the product people ask me about the most. Whenever I use it consistently, someone inevitably asks if I’ve done something different to my skin.

It gives me that healthy, well-rested glow without feeling greasy.

Step 4: ISDIN K-Ox Eyes

This eye cream was actually recommended to me by my good friend- and dermatologist- Dr. Mian, and I’ve never looked back.

It helps with the appearance of puffiness and dark circles, and the cooling ceramic applicator feels amazing after a long day.

It’s one of those products that quietly earns a permanent spot in your routine.

Step 5: Dieux Instant Angel

If I could only recommend one moisturizer right now, this would probably be it.

The May Lindstrom Problem Solver

This is my reset button.

Not because I think one face mask changes my skin overnight, but because twenty minutes of doing absolutely nothing while it’s on somehow resets me too.

I usually reach for it after a long week, after traveling, or anytime my skin feels congested or out of balance.

Fifteen Minutes With My Feet Up

This is probably the simplest habit on the list.

At the end of a long day, I’ll lie on my heated bathroom floor, put my feet up against the wall, answer a few emails, catch up with a friend, or simply enjoy a few quiet minutes.

This is usually the moment my husband walks in and asks, “Why are you lying on the bathroom floor?” Ha

It helps reduce swelling in my legs, improves circulation, and gives me a chance to slow down before bed.

This is one of those habits that feels small but makes a noticeable difference.

I haven’t been as consistent lately because somehow both of my girls end up in my shower most nights… moms, you get it.

But when I do remember, I spend a few minutes dry brushing using long strokes toward my heart.

Perfect Aminos Around My Workout

I’m really not a supplement person.

I get regular blood work done and only add things that I genuinely feel make a difference.

It’s the confusion around Vitamin A derivatives in general.

What’s the difference between retinol, retinal, and tretinoin?

Is prescription automatically better?

Should everyone eventually “graduate” to tretinoin?

And if you have sensitive skin, where should you even start?

A quick disclaimer before we start: we’re  not dermatologists.

We just have incredibly sensitive, allergy-prone skin and spent years trying to navigate the world of skincare without upsetting our skin barrier.

We’ve been lucky to learn from some brilliant dermatologists over the years many of whom are close friends due to a million derm visits (shout out Dr. Bhanusali & Dr. Mian) and a lot of what we know comes from those conversations combined with plenty of trial and error on our own face.

This is simply our experience, what worked for us, what didn’t, and what we wish someone had explained to us  sooner.

We wondered the same thing years ago, which is exactly why we jumped straight into prescription tretinoin.

What followed wasn’t glowing skin.

It was dry patches, redness, burning, and a skin barrier that was not happy with us. At times, we even experienced hives around our face, which made it difficult to tell whether we were reacting to the tretinoin itself or whether our skin barrier had simply become compromised.

The irony is that when your skin is irritated, it often looks worse before it has a chance to look better.

Today, tretinoin is part of our routine. But getting there taught us something important:

The strongest product isn’t always the best place to start.

Before we could tolerate prescription tretinoin consistently, we spent years using over the counter Vitamin A products which became a staple for us when our skin was particularly sensitive. (Linked at end of the article!)

Here’s what we’ve learned about the three most common Vitamin A derivatives- and how we’d approach them now.

Retinol

Retinol is the gentlest and most accessible place to start.

Because it has to go through multiple conversion steps before becoming active in the skin, it tends to work more slowly- but it’s often much easier to tolerate.

If you have sensitive, reactive, or dry skin, or if you’re completely new to Vitamin A, this is where we’d start.

One we’ve consistently gone back to is the RoC Retinol Correxion Capsules. They’re gentle, easy to use, and one of the few retinol products we could tolerate when our skin seemed to react to everything.

Retinal

Think of retinal as the middle ground.

It only needs one conversion step before becoming active, which means it’s generally more potent than retinol but often gentler than prescription tretinoin.

For a lot of people, this is the sweet spot.

You can see results faster than traditional retinol while avoiding some of the irritation that comes with jumping straight to prescription strength. We like the Avene & Dr. Diamond ones.

Tretinoin

Tretinoin is prescription strength retinoic acid.

Unlike retinol or retinal, it doesn’t need to convert inside the skin. It’s active immediately, which is why it’s considered the most effective and often the most irritating Vitamin A derivative.

For some people, tretinoin is incredible.

For others, especially those with sensitive skin, eczema tendencies, rosacea, or a compromised barrier, it can create a cycle of irritation that makes consistency difficult.

And consistency is what actually matters.

How We Use Tretinoin

If you’re new to tretinoin, we wouldn’t start by using it every night.

In our experience, slow and consistent wins every time.

A good place to start is once a week and gradually increase as your skin builds tolerance.

One method that helped us tremendously was sandwiching tretinoin between hydrating products.

For most people:

Serum → Tretinoin → Moisturizer

If your skin is especially sensitive, reactive, or prone to dryness:

Moisturizer → Tretinoin → Moisturizer

This creates a buffer that can help minimize irritation while still allowing you to benefit from tretinoin over time.

A little dryness or flaking in the beginning can be normal. Burning, persistent irritation, or skin that feels raw is usually a sign to scale back, focus on barrier repair, and increase more slowly.

One of the biggest lessons we’ve learned is that tretinoin isn’t a race.

The people who get the best results aren’t necessarily the ones using the strongest product the fastest. They’re usually the ones who find a frequency their skin can tolerate and stick with it consistently.

What We Learned

One of the biggest mistakes we see with our girlfriends and in skincare is assuming the strongest product is automatically the best product.

Usually, the best product is the one your skin can tolerate consistently for years…not weeks.

If you’re curious about Vitamin A but nervous about irritation, starting with an over the counter retinol and slowly building tolerance can be a much smarter approach than jumping straight to prescription strength.

The goal isn’t to use the strongest product.

The goal is to use the strongest product your skin can comfortably tolerate.

For years, we trained like men.

Linear.

Maximum output.

Same intensity every week.

But female physiology isn’t linear.

Hormones shift weekly.

Which means energy, recovery, and strength capacity shift too.

Once we stopped fighting that rhythm, consistency became easier.

Not because we were doing less.

But because we were doing what made sense.

This isn’t medical advice.

It’s simply a general framework that many women (including ourselves) find supportive.

A Cycle-Aware Training Guide

Week 1: Menstrual Phase

(Days 1–5, approximately)

Hormones are at their lowest. Energy can dip. Inflammation may be slightly higher.

Think:

• Walking

• Light Pilates

• Mobility work

• Lower weight, controlled strength

This isn’t the week to prove anything.

Restore. Reset. Maintain.

Week 2: Follicular Phase

(Post-period)

Estrogen rises. Energy often improves. Motivation tends to return.

Think:

• Progressive overload

• Heavier lifts

• Slightly more challenging sessions

• Short cardio bursts

This is often a build week.

Add intensity here.

Week 3: Ovulatory Phase

(Mid-cycle)

Many women feel strongest and most confident during this window.

Think:

• Athletic-style sessions

• Heavier strength

• Explosive movements

• Intervals if desired

If you’re going to push, this is usually your window.

Week 4: Luteal Phase

(Pre-period)

Progesterone rises. Body temperature increases. Recovery can slow.

This is where many women feel frustrated - because they try to train like Week 2.

Instead, think:

• Controlled strength

• Moderate loads

• Longer rest periods

• Incline walking

• Pilates

Not weakness.

Biology.

Consistency became easier when we stopped demanding maximum output every single week.

Your body isn’t inconsistent.

It’s rhythmic.

And when you respect the rhythm, you don’t burn out.

You build.

It started with reactions.

Growing up in Miami, my skincare was easy. I didn’t think about ingredients or sensitivities. Then one day things that had always worked for me… didn’t.

Products I’d used forever suddenly started irritating me - mascara, lip balm, random skincare that used to be fine.

Then came the hives.

I saw doctors, did patch testing, elimination diets - all of it. The answer was always vague: something in skincare or makeup was triggering my skin, but no one could tell me exactly what.

I wrote more about that journey - the hives, sensitivities, and years of trial and error - in my skin story here.

For a while I tried to solve it by switching everything to “clean,” while also over cleansing and unknowingly thinning my skin barrier. That didn’t fix it either. Some products still irritated my skin, and others simply didn’t work. Sometimes clean beauty actually made things worse.

Eventually I realized the solution wasn’t chasing labels…it was simplifying everything.

Less experimenting.

More consistency.

More patience.

Less products.

What I use now isn’t complicated. It’s just the result of a lot of quiet trial and error- and guidance from the best derms in the game who turned into family - Dr. Bhanusali and Dr. Mian.

This is the nighttime routine I come back to whenever my skin feels irritated and needs a reset.

1. Cleanse

I start with a gentle cleanse that removes makeup and the day without stripping my skin barrier. My skin reacts quickly to over-cleansing, so this step is always something mild and non-irritating.

2. Micellar Water

Even after cleansing, I go in with micellar water to make sure everything is fully removed - especially around the eyes and hairline where makeup tends to linger.

It’s a small step, but it helps prevent irritation later.

3. Barrier Support with my favorite serum

This step is all about calming the skin and supporting the barrier. When my skin is reactive, hydration and barrier repair make a bigger difference than adding more active ingredients.

4. Treatment (Depending on the Night)

Some nights I use retinol prescribed by my Derm via Skinmedicinals and other nights I skip actives entirely and focus on repair.

I’ve learned not to push my skin too hard here - consistency matters more than intensity.

5. Eye Cream

For the eye area I use ISDIN K-Ox Eyes Eye Cream.

It hydrates, brightens, and helps with puffiness without irritating my very sensitive eye area.

6. Moisturizer

I finish with Avène Hydrance Cream.

It’s rich, calming, and one of the few moisturizers that consistently works for my skin when it’s feeling reactive or compromised.

Note:

My routine isn’t rigid. I adjust products depending on how my skin feels - inflammation, dryness, travel, weather, or when my barrier feels compromised. Over time I’ve learned that listening to my skin matters more than following the exact same routine every night.
