And while I was finishing up A Witch and Her Vampire, I started outlining Sebastian’s, Lucas’s, and Michael’s books, and Sebastian’s book is now written and already in the editing phase (I can write contemporary a bit faster than fantasy!).

My Next Fantasy Series Is Coming Soon

If fantasy is why you’re here, don’t worry! I’m always going to write fantasy.

I’m already drafting the first book in my next fantasy romance series, and while it’s still early, I can tell you that I’m aiming for an early 2027 release. This is going to be a trilogy, and it’s going to be more expansive than my other romantasy series, with more action, adventure, and spicy times. 😘

It’s a familiar world (many years in the past), but with brand-new characters (though you’ll see a familiar face), and a story I’ve been dreaming about for quite a while now. I started outlining this series over a year ago, and now that CCA is complete (and I wrote After Midnight as a palette cleanser), I’m ready to fully commit the next year or so of my writing life to bringing this new series into the bookish world.

As I have more info, you’ll be the first to know! ❤️

Today’s the day. 🖤 After months of working on this book, A Witch and Her Vampire is officially out in the world.

And perhaps even bigger than this single release is that my Coven Crest Academy series is now finished. 🥹 I do have a rough outline for a potential book 5, in which we’d get to see an epilogue of sorts with all four couples, but that’s not in the works yet. If/when I do start working on that book, you’ll be the first to know.

A CCA box set is also in the works! We’re currently in the cover design process, but once that’s done, the box set will be quick to follow.

What’s Next?

Now that CCA is complete, I’ll be diving into some new stories that don’t take place at our magical witches’ academy. Currently, I have two books I’m working on: a contemporary and book 1 in a brand-new romantasy series. The contemporary is almost at 60k already, so I expect to have it out in the next few months, and the new romantasy is at about 15k, but I’m aiming for it to be in the range of 120k - 150k words, so that one will take me a bit longer to get written and edited.

Of course, I’ll be sharing more information as these projects progress!

A Little Real-Life Update

Outside of writing, I’ve also been spending time trying to rescue my very messy garden. I live in zone 4B, at 8,500 feet in elevation, and I don’t have a greenhouse yet, so gardening is always an interesting endeavor. 🤣 Last year, I was surprised to discover that we also have pocket gophers in my area, and they did a flawless job at eating almost all of my crops, including a whole bed of potatoes and almost two beds of onions. I definitely shed some tears over all the empty beds.

This year, I’m redoing my raised beds and adding hardware cloth to them so the gophers can’t climb up and eat everything, and it’s taking a lot more time than I expected. Yesterday, I finally managed to get some seeds planted, and this morning was my first drink-coffee-and-water-plants morning, which makes it feel like summer is actually here.

A Little Behind-the-Scenes Update

This book is much longer than I originally planned, and I’m so happy about it. I love long books. 🤭

A Witch and Her Vampire is officially my longest book yet, coming in at approximately 117,000 words.

The manuscript is now in the proofreading stage, which means we are getting so close to release day.

And that also means we’re about to finish the Coven Crest Academy series. I’m happy and sad. 🥹 But don’t worry, I already have a new romantasy series brewing. And this one is going to be dark and spicy, which I’m really looking forward to after writing so much cozy fantasy (though I do intend to come back to cozy when I need a break!). I’ll be sharing more about my next WIP in posts to come.

Severin D’Arques is Coven Crest Academy’s newest history professor—and a brooding ancient vampire who’s never met a storm witch like Maeve Vandermere. ⚡️ He’s a bit of a control freak, and Maeve disrupts everything when she rolls into his life like a turbulent thunderstorm.

🩸 A Witch and Her Vampire

Chapter 2

Severin

Seated in the armchair in my staff apartment, I sip from my coffee mug while perusing my open journal. The page is covered in tidy notes and lesson plans for my first class of the day: Dangerous Magic Across Time.

Senior Seminar—Dangerous Magic Across Time

Objective: Examine historical cases of dangerous magic—what was attempted, what went wrong, and why. Focus is on analysis, not fear. Most practitioners only recognize danger in hindsight. This course aims to correct that.

Key question: What separates dangerous magic from innovative magic?

Students will be expected to evaluate intent, method, and outcome and to consider what could have been done differently in each case.

Opening Exercise

Present three cases without attribution:

• A city rendered uninhabitable due to failed elemental anchoring (Tempest Cataclysm)

• A healer’s work corrupting lineage rather than curing it

• A scholarly invention destabilizing a ley-line network

Require silence. Writing only. Students must decide which outcomes were inevitable and which were preventable. Do not allow discussion yet. Early debate becomes performance.

It’s a class I’ve taught before—though never at Coven Crest—yet no matter how many times I teach a class, I still like to sharpen the edges of my mind before stepping out in front of the students. I owe it to them as much as I owe it to myself to do this right.

Otherwise, why teach at all?

I glance at the clock on the wall, then finish the rest of my mug—a mix of strong black espresso and a dash of blood from the blood bank in Wysteria. The journal closes with a familiar thump, and then I slip it into my briefcase and go to rinse my mug in the small kitchenette before preparing to leave.

I’m standing in front of my full-length mirror, adjusting the cuff links on my crisp black button-up, when the castle clock rumbles through the stone. I start at how loud and grating the sound is—it’s quite clear this castle is inhabited by witches and warlocks, not vampires. If it were, it’d be quiet.

It will simply take some getting used to, like most of the other things in my life.

With one firm tug, I snug my charcoal-gray vest into place, then brush a single fluff of lint from my shoulder. Before the clock is done with its cacophony, I have my briefcase in one hand and am striding out of my apartment and down the hallway toward the history wing, where I’ll spend the majority of my time here.

Students bustle down the hallways, filling the narrow corridors with their laughter and chatter and the excitement of starting a new school year. I flinch at a sudden and grating laugh, then take a deep breath and repeat one of my many mantras: Observation before impulse.

I focus my senses on what I can see—a lock of hair caught on a cloak clasp, the tiny rainbows of light cast through the stained glass—what I can hear—the rustling of fresh parchment, the whisper of a door swinging open down the hall—and what I can smell—herbs and butter from the dining hall, a hint of sage from a burning stick of incense, and . . . blood.

Always blood.

But I’ve been alive for over three centuries, and the scent of blood no longer tempts me—at least, not the way it used to. Now, I control my urges to feed.

My practice of slowing my mind and observing before acting is one I needed to survive, to make my way in this world without being a danger to those around me. And even now, it helps to calm me.

As I move down the hallway, students notice me, their eyes widening or their mouths opening in expressions of confusion or curiosity as they shift to make way for me. Whispers drift in my wake.

“Who’s that?”

“I think he’s the new history professor.”

“Is he a . . . vampire?”

The headmistress warned me that I may be an oddity around here for a while; it seems she was right. But in time, all things lose their shine. And in short order, I’ll no longer be shiny to them, just a hard-ass history professor who tolerates little and expects much. It’s why Headmistress Moonhart hired me.

I make my way to my classroom, and as soon as I slip through the door and into the quiet of the lecture hall, I’m able to breathe easier, with the loud sounds of the hall muffled through the walls. No students have yet arrived, and I take this moment of alone time to reach into the inside pocket of my vest, where I keep a flask of blood tucked away. Quickly pulling it out, I flip the cap open, then take a deep swig. The blood goes down smooth, calming my nerves, but the taste leaves much to be desired.

No blood bank can ever replicate the flavor of blood straight from the vein, still hot and pulsing with life energy. But it’ll do—I’ve lived primarily off blood donations for many years, and it’s one of many urges I’ve learned to restrain.

I tuck the flask back into my vest, dab my lips with a square of cloth, and then move to the lectern at the front of the class. As soon as I pull my journal out and settle it atop the wooden podium, the door opens, and my first few students trickle in.

As they take their seats, I turn to the blackboard, pick up a fresh stick of chalk, and write my name: Professor Severin D’Arques.

You have officially met our lonely (though he’d never admit it) vampire professor. And in the next chapter, he gets to meet Maeve. 😉

So today, I’m sharing chapter one with you. ✨

🩸 A Witch and Her Vampire

Chapter 1

Maeve

My legs dangle over the edge of the waist-high stone railing encircling the Skyreach Spire. Far below me, the trees dotting the campus courtyard sway in a comforting late-summer breeze. A long lock of violet hair blows into my view, dancing in front of my eyes, but I ignore it, focusing on the pure-white energy sphere crackling between my palms.

My eyes are narrowed, every ounce of my intention being directed into the sphere.

This is the first time I’ve been able to hold its shape for more than a few seconds, and my muscles are already starting to tremble from the power required to contain the sphere. It wants to explode and send bolts of lightning sparking off in all directions, to break free of my control and lash outward wildly.

It’s happened before. And that’s why I’m up on the storm spire instead of sitting cross-legged on my bed back in room NT33. Last time I practiced in our dorm room, one of my sparks went errant, and it singed the letter Poppy had been writing and burned one of Lyra’s curls off. Alina escaped unscathed, but none of them were happy.

The girls made a new rule after that: Maeve practices her storm magic outside.

So, here I am.

Another breeze washes over me, rustling my skirt along my thighs and tugging at the energy pulsing in my hold.

“Be careful,” Isis hisses to me from where she’s coiled around my neck, her head close to my ear.

“I’m. Being. Careful,” I bite out, clenching my teeth against the strain as sweat beads along my hairline.

Then, with no warning, the sphere explodes, sending crackles of lightning in every direction. I flinch back. Some sparks hit the castle, skittering over the stone, while others fly off into the sky or down to the lush green grass below. I quickly conjure a swirl of water in my palm, just in case something catches on fire. But after a few seconds, nothing goes up in flames, and my lightning has dispersed.

With a sigh, I lower my hand, allowing the water to splash away and fall the long distance down to the grassy ground far below me.

“That was a close one,” Isis says, flicking her tongue. “What happened that time?”

“I don’t know.” And that’s exactly my problem. I’ve been working and working at my energy sphere, but the progress I’ve made has been slow and inconsistent. I shake my head and put a hand to my temple. My fingers are warm from the lightning magic as I wipe away the perspiration that beaded there. “But there must be some way to do it. I just need to be more focused, more . . . controlled. If I want to get that fellowship, I can’t keep failing like this.”

There are other candidates—students vying for the same coveted invitation to join the Arcanum Collective and pursue advanced magical research—and if I can’t control my energy sphere, I’m not going to stand a chance against them.

A deep chime reverberates through the castle and all the way up to me where I’m seated at the top of the spire. The sound and vibration send a murder of crows into the sky, their cries echoing through the castle courtyard as they fly overhead, their black bodies like smudges of ink against the pale sky.

That means it’s time for class.

I swing my legs back over the railing, the stone warm against my bare thighs beneath my skirt, and drop down, then grab my bookbag from where I left it and sling it over my shoulders, being careful of Isis as she recedes under my hair, still coiled around my throat.

It’s the first day of the new school year at Coven Crest, and I’m finally wearing a robe trimmed in purple: a fourth-year robe. It’s the robe that means this will be my last year here, my last year dorming with Alina and Lyra and Poppy, my last year before everything becomes real.

No more safety, no more waiting. After this year, it all changes, and I’ll be out there in the real world, no longer sheltered by the academy’s walls.

And I’m determined to be prepared when that time comes: with a fellowship to attend the Arcanum Collective and further my research into magical power sources—namely, storm magic—and how they might be used to benefit the nonmagical people of Elarwyn.

But despite all my effort, I still haven’t been able to fully control the energy sphere.

I have to push harder. Control it. Shape it.

Another sigh slips out of me as I cross the spire and reach for the door that leads into the spiraling staircase that’ll take me down to the elemental magic hallway.

“You’ll get it,” Isis says from where she’s curled beneath my hair, where my professors won’t be able to see here, since we’re not supposed to bring our spirit companions to class—even though most students do, as long as they’re small enough to conceal.

“I will,” I say as my fingers wrap around the door handle, which is warm from the morning sun. “Or else the collective will never take me.”

The thought of not getting the fellowship—of not being able to continue my research with the full support of the great minds at the ancient magic guild—makes me want to send storms roiling across the sky.

Which I can do. I’ve done it before. Yet I somehow can’t get one energy sphere to hold.

I grit my teeth and narrow my eyes, more determined than ever to get this right.

Then I yank open the door and step into the cool darkness of the tower, ready for my last first day at the academy.

Ah! There it is, the first chapter officially out in the world. 💙

I am so close to finishing this book.

A Witch and Her Vampire is now sitting at 104,000 words, and I’m almost to the epilogue (I think I’ll write it either tomorrow or Thursday). This book might be my favorite of the quartet (do I keep saying that about every book in this series?), and I can’t wait for you to meet our new brooding history professor. He’s so yummy. 😋

I recently approved the narrators for A Witch and Her Minotaur, and I am so excited. They both sound amazing, and I think they’re going to be such a great fit for Lyra and Cairn. Each book in the series has different narrators, with distinct voices matching each character’s personality. So we now have our narrators for Dragon and Minotaur locked in. Ah!

Book four in the series is coming along beautifully. I am IN LOVE with Maeve and Severin. Ohmygosh.

Right now, A Witch and Her Vampire is sitting at about 60,000 words, and my goal is to finish the manuscript by the end of March so it can head into editing.

You might not know this, but I’ve been participating in NaNoWriMo for over a decade now, and I was incredibly disappointed when the organization closed its doors earlier this year. So imagine my joy and surprise when I discovered that the original founder has returned with NaNoWriMo 2.0! I’ve jumped in, and so far I’ve written 18,000 words on A Witch and Her Orc! The book hit 85,000 words this morning, and it’s still not done. 😅 So we might have a 90k-word novel by the time I write “The End.” Can’t say I expected Poppy and Aric’s story to be this long, but I’m here for it!
