Elle is back from camp in Maine and school is on the horizon. We have a couple trips left and then, though warm, fall’s imminence is upon us. Growing up, shopping for High Holiday outfits kickstarted the season, and though my procurement process begins earlier these days, the allure of something new feels the same.

It’s true that the air won’t crisp and the leaves won’t turn until halfway to winter (at least in the South), but the thought of cooler temperatures is enough to stop my scroll. I’ve been all over the internet from the Real Real to Shopbop and thought I’d share what’s catching my eye in case you, too, can feel the faint hint of long sleeves and fur. You’re also more likely to snap up something good when no one else is thinking about anything except wiping sweat of their brow.

On our most recent trip to London we dined out with the boys a few times. The experience that went the most smoothly? The evening they were dressed to the nines.

As you may have gathered from my last post, dressing up is something I adore. It comes with an inherent sense of decorum and I love the way you can command a room when the outfit hits. Look good, feel good, you know?

Kids sense this too. We spent a part of our last day shopping and as we went through Harrod’s, George noticed all of the dressed up mannequins on the fourth floor (which houses more kids brands than I knew existed, and I shop…a lot).

All day George was after a “fancy outfit” to wear to dinner, and I promised him if he was patient, I would deliver.

We then headed over to Notting Hill, where we stopped by La Coqueta, our much-beloved and most worn brand. The boys were dressed in La Coqueta outfits when we walked in, but they walked out with something that George had his heart set on: a blazer and a belt (we also got the shorts and shirt too).

The boys looked smashing at dinner, and their behavior rose to the occasion, fancy is as fancy does. While I didn’t get enough photos of the looks as I was too busy enjoying my delicious meal (Lilibet’s is a must!) and our last family stroll on our final evening in London, they will rewear their blazer and short looks next week, so stay tuned.

Shop the Boys Looks, On Sale

Dusting off this Substack after a year of posting solely to Born on Fifth. Why? Well, why not?

My first thought is to brain dump every fleeting thought I’ve had, fashion purchase I’ve made and musing I’ve mustered since the last time I sat down at my keyboard, blank canvas in front of me. I’ll spare you.

Instead, for this first moment back, I thought I would share what I feel is a document that could change the world: The Members’ Enclosure Dress Code at Wimbledon. Why do I love this document so much? Well, for starters, as the person who was in charge of enforcing my sorority’s recruitment dress code, it would have made my job easier. People are visual.

On a deeper level, I love this document as it provides, without a doubt, clear direction (in advance). It gives people a moment to sit with the decorum of it all. And I, for one, appreciate the formality of tradition.

The only other place I’ve felt as inspired in a group setting in recent memory is at The Masters. The Augusta National has a similar, though less formally presented (as far as I’m aware) respect within its patron community, and people show up and show out.

Without further ado, a glimpse at the dress code. Above, how we interpreted it.

What to Wear in the Members’ Enclosure

The dress code is on full display, eliminating any questions or awkwardness at the entry. Guests received this document via email in ample time ahead of the event.

Now, does every court have such strict guidelines? Of course the answer is no. But, there is a sense of pride in being prim and proper and it seemed most guests did their best do dress the part.

I loved the long sleeve Dior outfit I wore on day two, but this old Self Portrait dress is my favorite since it kept me cooler. Also, perfect in case I ran into Kate! I wore it last year to the US Open as well (where I was, in fact, overdressed). It was the start of my manifestation to get to Wimbledon this year, so worth it!

Here’s our play by play, and a few overall observations. Also linking some outfits we wore, as my packing was particularly tight and well thought out this trip!

Overall Insight

Staying in Midtown around 55th and 5th is ideal with little kids. You can walk to Central Park, the Theater District is close enough, there are a ton of restaurants, hot dog vendors abound for quick snacks and, while it can get a little crowded on the sidewalk on Saturday afternoon, most kid-centric shopping is right there too. When we traveled by ourselves in our younger days and Michael and I stayed at the St. Regis, I remember feeling like I wished we were either further up or further down (the restaurants and workout classes I cared for at the time weren’t in midtown).

My tune has changed with kids in tow! Funny how that happens. Last year we stayed at the Aman and this year we stayed at the University Club but there are many spots right here. The Plaza (where we stayed on a couples trip in May), St. Regis (we’ve stayed there before and it was lovely) and The Peninsula (staying there next time) are right here too and would work well for families.

• Pretzel stand for a snack while we unloaded the car

• Checked in and unpacked *with ease* thanks to the biggest game changer for travel (in my humble opinion), our Bitty Green bags. One for each kid, and packed them all in this Away suitcase

• Walked to American Girl and shopped

• Left AG and realized the kids needed a snack and I needed a coffee before dinner; booked Ginori Cafe at 4:00 and it was empty, and really lovely. Be careful with little kids, as there’s a lot of breakables

• The boys walked home and got in the bath; Elle and I hit Bergdorf Goodman and got these shoes. Core memory!

• Changed into fancy clothes and made our 6:00 reservation at Fleming’s. We sat inside and it was empty (perfect for us, since it’s a small restaurant and the kids were tired from a travel day). Outside dining looked lovely and would have been nice without kids

• Strolled Madison Avenue and then Ubered home!

• Upper East Side morning starting at Ralph’s for coffee and croissants

• Walked up Madison to Zitomer’s my favorite pharmacy and our go-to toy store in the city only to find out the toy store closed last week! A true loss.

• Recovered with a trip to the 76th Street playground which is lovely

• Continued up Madison after the playground. Went to Sant Ambroeus for coffee number two and stopped at Eats (they have some toys, so that was a fine substitute), LoveShackFancy and Tuckernuck (could have done a lot more shopping but alas, the boys were not into it)

• Took a cab to Amaranth which opens at noon for lunch, got there a few minutes early. It’s a solid option (we also love Via Quadronno, this is a step up). Kristen Wiig walked by and ate at the Greek Tony Dragon’s Grille food truck next to the restaurant that was surprisingly busy…we mentally noted to try it next time. Ate quickly as we were headed to Chelsea Piers for a 1:15 boat!

• Boarded our Sailboat, which was such a fun way to see the Statue of Liberty (something Jennings really wanted to do last year that we didn’t have time for). Arranged it through Classic Harbor Line and I highly recommend this activity if you have young kids. The ride is less than two hours, and was easy to find, clean, you get a snack and drink and it was a lot of fun!

• Made a pit stop at the Ralph’s Truck on Fifth for a coffee (there’s a Bluestone Lane right next to the harbor which would have been a good choice too), then went back to hotel. My brother and his husband live in NYC and babysat while Michael and I headed to the US Open with our friends!

• The US Open was such a fun way to spend Saturday night. We saw Felix Auger Aliassime defeat Alexander Zverev in Louis Armstrong stadium. Side note, if you haven’t watched the Who Is Stan Smith documentary and are a tennis fan or sports fan I highly recommend that too!

Sunday

• Michael’s favorite breakfast spot in the city is Sadelle’s, so we made an 8:15 reservation (the kids are up early) and headed downtown. Afterwords we walked around Soho for a bit (it’s pretty dead on Sunday mornings, so not sure I’d plan the trip again this way)

• We went to the Flatiron Lego Store to avoid a bit of the rush of the Rockefeller location (promised Jennings we could go Saturday) then headed back to the hotel to change before going to see The Lion King

• We had lunch on the go (snacks) and probably should have stopped by the Hot Dog cart, but since we had just eaten we didn’t and I figured that the show we were attending might have better lunch options since it was a matinee. Alas.

• The Lion King was great, aside from Mufasa’s death scene. Still sad 30 years later. We got there at 12:20, just as the doors were opening and that timing was good

• After the show we went to a very crowded Central Park to stretch our legs for a bit, and then headed to Avra on Madison for dinner

• If you haven’t been and have a group, Avra is a 10/10! Have eaten at both locations and they’re really beautiful and the food is amazing. Loved the Madison location for the walk home (past the Plaza)

• Our friends went to Serendipity for dessert, but we headed back to the hotel and relaxed and packed

Monday

• Our flight was at 11, so we ate at The Peninsula for breakfast since our hotel is really more of a club, and they were closed for Labor Day Weekend

• After breakfast we headed to LGA, which is a surprisingly delightful experience these days

What to Shop During the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

A New Hot Tool, I like the T3 Aire IQ.

This smart dryer has a touch screen that enables you to share your hair type and texture, and then dry it without frying it. There are three attachments, and a resting stand which complement its pretty pale pink shade. As clever as it is chic.

New Baby Gear, I Like the Nuna Rava carseats, Vista Stroller, Doona Liki Tryke and Yoyo BabyZen Stroller.

Having three kids, I feel like I know what worked well, and all of these pass the test with flying colors. The car seat is easy to install, the strollers are functional and far-reaching and all serve a purpose. For older kids, the BabyZen (a must, think of it like an umbrella stroller that you can carry on your shoulder, easily wheels and fits in the overhead compartment) and Tryke (fun!) are key.

A New Suitcase, Away is the Way to Go.

There’s a reason all our bags are Away. They’re lightweight (great for overpackers like me) and fit a ton. They come in a slew of colors, and each member of our family has their own assigned hue, so we can easily spot whose suitcase is missing. 10/10.

A Mascara Two Pack, Especially of My Favorite Variety.

I’m thrilled to see YSL Lash Clash a part of the mix. I always buy mascara in bulk, so that I never run out (it’s my desert island item). There’s always one stashed in my bag too.

What Should Be On Yours (If You Don’t Already Own)

• The Only Stain Cleaner You Need: I said what I said. We have re-ordered (all sizes, shapes, and forms) over 30 times.

• Tonie Box: We bought a second one since Jennings loves it so much. We listed to Tonies during breakfast, before bed and have amassed quite the collection.

• Frame TV: The 55 inch is nearly 50% off and we’ve loved ours going on six years!

• Nipple Covers: If you’ve never worn, you’re missing an opportunity to feel much more comfortable in swimsuits, dresses that need a little something but not a full on bra and just a bit of extra coverage. These are the best on the market.

• Biodance Mask: This leaves my skin feeling like glass. You put on the mask (which comes in two pieces) and it wakes up as one, almost melted into your skin. It’s divine and I’ll take 20.

• Weighted Vest: This one is low profile and super comfortable. I started with 6 lbs, and also got an 8 lbs version.

Shopping is something that has always come naturally to me and I like to think I came by the habit honestly. It’s the way my maternal grandmother and I bonded. On trips to visit her, we would land, head through the gates of Boca West and almost immediately turn around in search of Limited Too at Town Center. It was my earliest exposure to the finer things in life, and the mall.

Delia’s catalogs soon followed, my Bat Mitzvah sign in board photo outfit (including my first platforms) was sourced here, and Bebe was where I picked my Bat Mitzvah party dress (a take on Jennifer Aniston’s famous 1999 strapless bandana top and skirt, mine in purple).

I got my first designer bag, a Kate Spade box purse, at Nordstrom. Nordstrom is also where we would head to have our makeup done, and BP. was my coming-of-age section. I would spend hours and hours shopping there during the weekends of my youth.

My mom, though not as much of a shopper as her mother-in-law or daughter, did consistently shop one event every year: The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. She was a Nordstrom card holder and got early access “behind the drapes,” which was, perhaps, my first experience being a VIP.

When I worked at Spanx (ironically, a brand I first heard of because the Nordstrom Anniversary sale, i.e. when my mom stocked up on her Footless Pantyhose, a staple for her corporate outfits at Coca Cola), we dedicated a lot of time and resources to making sure the pieces that were developed for the sale were special, desirable and a great deal. And that sentiment holds true today. The brands that participate are very thoughtful in what they offer and why, and I’m just as thoughtful about how I shop the sale. Baby gear has historically topped my list, both of purchases and recommendations. Buying things you would be buying anyway, at a great value, feels smarter than just girl math. It’s really the only way to do it.

Now that we’ve delved into why I love to shop, and the way I do it, I thought I’d share a few pieces that piqued my interest from this year’s Nordstrom Anniversary Sale and are on my wishlist. Baby Gear & Luggage We Can’t Live Without

The Yoyo stroller is hands down a top 5 must have for the baby and toddler years! Our Away bags are included in the Anniversary Sale too. We have all sizes, but as an over-packer I love the 29 inch for myself.

The Liki Trike and the Vista are included (more on the Vista below). Both in action a couple of summers ago .

Our Rava carseats are another item I purchased during the Anniversary Sale. Michael and I have them, as do our nanny and my parents. They are so sturdy and substantial. Love the color included in the sale this year!

The tried-and-true Vista stroller holds so many memories! We’ve finally outgrown it (beyond Halloween, when we stroll the kids if they get tired of Trick-or-Treating). Here, a trip to Nordstrom with the kids a couple of years ago.

Cinderella’s Castle, on film

A week ago to the minute we stood outside of the Four Seasons in Orlando, Florida waiting for the magic to begin. Our kids had been up for hours at this point, their eager minds knowing something special was about to happen. We got dressed in our well thought-out outfits (mickey baseball hats, prada ears, tweeny two piece set that still reads sweet), got through breakfast and convened in the lobby. Aaron, our VIP guide, walked up to the hotel at 8:25, pins in hand, excited to meet our family and share that he would be with us for the next three days. We buckled up (carseats provided) and got a backstage entry, straight into the Magic Kingdom, skipping Main Street and popping out next to the Castle.

For the next three days, I felt like a kid again. Perhaps what I most underestimated about this trip is that the magic that I assumed would be reserved for Elle, Jennings and George, was actually more special to me.

The things that made our trip were two-fold. Precise planning and knowing what we like. Because we had a VIP guide the planning step was less park logistics and what lightning passes to use when and more outlining outfits and accessories (diaper bags, pouches of snacks, etc.) ahead of time to maximize every moment and ensure we were prepared. The knowing what we like involved upfront intel: we would do Disney but not for dinner. We ate at the hotel every evening, returning once for fireworks (more on that below). For us, this provided a great outline of the day, and we could go hard (and skip nap) knowing what to expect (of our kids and for ourselves).

1. Our VIP Guide. The kids all said he was their favorite part of the trip. We got to ride everything we wanted (and more) and it was beyond helpful to have an expert leading the way so we could be present and ENJOY.

2. The Minnie Van / Fireworks / Dessert Party. Would definitely recommend doing this at least once.

3. Using a Disney Planner (recommended by our go-to travel agent). Our planner secured the guide, the dessert party and the Cinderella’s Table reservation. She was able to get additional dining but we opted out since we knew we’d want to eat dinner at the hotel. Not having lunch reservations kept our days more flexible which worked for us.

4. Our strollers. This sounds crazy perhaps, but having strollers that move and park easily was a game changer. Our cute stroller tags were also a win, and having a bag that easily clipped made stashing hats and cameras a breeze.

5. Disposable cameras for the kids. So special to capture this experience through their eyes. Not all the photos turned out (some dark) but that’s to be expected I suppose.

6. Pre-planned outfits and very specific packing. I am a notorious overpacking but for this trip I spent a lot of time on this (trying on every outfit beforehand and having Elle do the same) and it made getting dressed each morning a breeze. I got all matching outfits for the boys which also saved time and fuss and packed in our favorite Bitty Green Bags. Here’s everything we brought and wore.

7. Going in March. Not too crowded (perhaps because our spring break is early) and nearly perfect weather (a spritz of rain one morning, but we had ponchos which I ordered last minute, along with fans in case it was hot). Here’s our whole checklist of what to pack for the park.

8. Having the park to ourselves. If you want the photos with no one else at the castle and the right lighting, you have to get there when the gates open (which is different than posted park entry, since the rides aren’t going yet). For us, since we had an 8:35 breakfast reservation, we got in at 8 — we were on the way by 7:20, be sure to allot extra time for security and transport. There were also moments in the late afternoon that you could get close to the castle with no one else in the photos (around 3pm when everyone is lined up for the parade), but the sun was bright. We also had additional “park to ourselves” access because of that breakfast reservation - seeing the merry go round and behind the castle completely empty was a highlight for me.

9. Bringing our amazing nanny. It was a joy to have the person who is with the kids most (besides us) see their joy and experience the magic alongside them. It also worked well to have a 1:1 ratio for ride partnering given everyones ages/preferences.

10. Not overstaying - and leaving excited to return for more magic. Though we could have used one more day at the hotel (or in the parks, to see Epcot), there is something about leaving while you’re still on the high.

A week later as I sit and reflect…

I can’t wait to go back, which is *not* something I expected before our trip. Perhaps it’s my PTSD that made me think I didn’t like Disney (I had a miscarriage right after our trip six years ago), but I’m glad to have this experience as my most recent Disney World memory. The more I think about it, we did take Elle to Disney Paris (giving up a day in my favorite city) and I would like to get to Disneyland in California…so perhaps I have become a Disney person after all.

And, as for the shoes…the Substack is called Well Heeled after all…and I am, always, well, in heels (if I can help it). Day one was a flatform, day two was a comfortable sneaker-like elevated sandal and day three was a tried and true platform heel, similar here. Look good, feel good you know?

While setting up for Elle’s birthday party my balloon vendor told me I’m the most specific client she has when it comes to color. Is this an insult or a compliment? I took it as a compliment, though I have to admit I was a bit stunned. How can this be the case? Is it because I care the most? Is it because I know what I want? Is it because my brain needs a reset?

Yes, I am specific (and if something isn’t right I always give feedback with kindness, or with my “why” so there is an understanding of the reason I’m asking for certain things) but what’s the why behind why I’m so specific? Let’s unpack it while we review what worked well for Elle’s ninth birthday and I’ll share a few other tips in the hopes it can help you get what you want when you’re planning your next notable party…

One of my favorite sites is having a sample sale, and honestly as I just clicked through there was surprise and delight at every turn. Items I’ve had my eye on for a year are marked way down (purchased, obviously) and special, unique pieces that are absolute wardrobe enhancers are also somehow included. (Going through my mind…is it a mistake? A lucky day?).

Either way and without further delay, the pieces you should shop before someone else does.

This year we agreed upon a smaller party, and my one ask was that it wasn’t a spend the night (we have a lot of celebrations in February and I couldn’t take that on). While we were brainstorming Elle remembered a “trip to Israel” that she took at Sunday school last year and was inspired by the memory. What if we go to Paris? That’s all I needed to hear.

I told myself that this would be a smaller scale party than what I’ve done in the past — not just in attendee numbers but also in spend. I can’t help myself. I love kids birthday parties and want every detail my brain concepts to come to life. I did a better job this year, and think since the party was so dynamic, the changes of scenery enabled it to feel as if it hit all the marks conceptually without the cost of creating so many scenes.

The other bonus I had in my back pocket, is that a close friend of a close friend (who I now consider a close friend too) has a grand scale Eiffel Tower in her backyard. Once I got approval to stop by to sightsee, we were off and the party planning could begin.

We picked Passport to Paris as our handle, as one who grew up in the pre-Row MK&A era would naturally do. Not to mention Elle and I saw them when we were in Paris so it was too good not to use. The plan, as Elle directed, was for the girls to get dropped off at the airport (our house), and then we would do “Paris things,” including lunch at her favorite spot, Le Bilboquet. To Elle’s credit she asked to visit a museum for culture, but time didn’t allow - the three hour party could have easily been four.

This week I have a few Substacks cooking, but I need to take a minute to slow down, so I can speed up. It’s a funny position to be in. I have so much I want to say, share, do, put out into the world. But I feel stuck. First, Instagram has me convinced I have ADHD (and perhaps I do). I am either hyper productive or in this frozen place. Maybe it doesn’t seem like that given my outputs, but I also am a high achiever and know I am so much more capable than I feel like I am in this moment. Is it the age and stage of my kids? Is it the second dog that seemed like a good idea at the time (forgetting puppyhood is harder than a baby…a third pair of shoes eaten this week alone)? Is it that I work from home and can’t escape the house things that come up daily? Is it that I’m a type a creative who needs to be reminded often that progress over perfection is the way the content world often works. But is it? It doesn’t seem that way for everyone else. Am I too hard on myself? Too protective of my brand?

I met Kylie Jenner yesterday, and I was in awe. For a lot of reasons. She’s obviously gorgeous and is as sweet as can be. Her outfit hit in a way I didn’t realize possible. She’s showing up for her brand on the ground level, even though she probably has a billion followers globally. From a marketing perspective (which is my background), she is the very reason the drop model exists. She changed consumer behavior. She is the second youngest self made female billionaire I have interacted with (which is not something I take lightly) and she has a team. A team. A TEAM! Watching it play out was helpful. The team was delightful and smart and strategic and cool. The team was an extension of Kylie, from the way they captured on her behalf to the way they dressed.

I think I just answered my own question. I need to slow down to speed up to build out my team in a meaningful way. To strategize instead of shooting from the hip. To determine the best use of my time and talent (which I know is in there somewhere). Do I need a business coach? To be medicated? To go offline for a month?

As I often tell Elle who is a very strong writer with very poor handwriting (beyond her cursive which is gorgeous), your brain is moving faster than your hands can. Focus on what you have to say even if it comes out messily. Should I take my own advice? Am I the next Kris Jenner?

Slowing Down to Speed Up

When Michael uttered the words “I think we should take the kids to Disney for spring break,” I was a bit lost for words of my own. Do I think Disney is the best use of our time and talents, no. Do I know the kids will make a core memory and I am in to win mom of the year? Absolutely. After the initial hurdle of how will we make it through this with three kids, the most obvious question came to mind. WTF do I wear?

The last time we went to Disney was in October 2022. In Paris. Chic. Since it was fall, I wore a Celine cardigan in wool. Elle was six and she had a similar little outfit. Happy campers. The time before that was March 2019 in the less chic city of Orlaaaandooooo. I was pregnant and almost out of my first trimester, after our first round of IVF. I wore dresses. Lots of dresses. I felt well and Elle had a blast the two days that we spent on property. I rode a of couple rides. I rubbed elbows with Cinderella. I put my toes in the pool. And I miscarried right after the trip.

Going back to Orlando as a mom of three, long enough removed from the trying-to-get-pregnant place I languished in for years, I almost don’t even remember who I was back then. And though I don’t remember her, I do remember what she wore. My style is always three things: Sophisticated, Feminine and Ethereal. The one thing that changes is which word tops the hierarchy. At that moment in my life, ethereal won. Flowy and yes, feminine, felt and looked best. Now I’m in a place of sophistication to the point of stopping myself, perhaps, from having the fun that I should (if future me could weigh in, that would be great).

So, what does a self-anointed sophisticate / mom of three wear to a place that thrives on family costumes? Therein lies the opportunity. Let’s look at some outfit ideas together.

Starting with the kids. They, too, are sophisticated - though I would tag their style as traditional and sweet. For the boys we’re going heavily monogrammed and collared shirts. White hats with ears and white crocs acceptable. Elle had the most glorious custom dresses made when she was little for our trip, and they’re stashed somewhere in a memory box. This photo adorns her bedside table. Bejeweled crocs for her get a pass. She’s going to wear some cute skirt and top sets and I found her a sweet little Disney spirit jersey as well to pair with shorts.

Did we buy ears in advance? Yes. I’m not one to fawn over a gift shop. Did we buy long hair bows to attempt a coquette take (but fitting for a pre-tween)? Also yes. I even bought a Kitsch hair clip with little beads representing Mr. and Mrs. Mouse.

Now for me…

I’ve seen how the Kardashians do Disney, and the athletic look might hit for a day. I also know myself and want to love the photos (for the memories) and legs just don’t photograph particularly well, which leads me to will I be able to wear shorts? The jury is out. For now, here are the looks I’m ordering to attempt. See ya real soon and will let you know if they work.

1. This top is it, but feel like the skirt will need to sit higher than it does on the model. Do I remember Disney having a no midriff rule? This feels elevated enough to not get dress coded.

2. The skirt in question. Love that it’s lightweight yet covers my legs.

3. The best walking yet height-giving sandals-meet-sneakers of all time. Willing to put money on that.

4. Disney Parks meets Parke. This almost mock-neck has a flower instead of a name on it. Sold.

5. Shorts that aren’t *too* short.

6. Chic sneaks. The bows are removable btw.

7. The perfect post-park top when you need a quick change (might be hard to do strapless during the day tbd).

8. Flattering shorts that don’t squeeze the thighs, really the only kind I’ll wear that aren’t workout.

9. Pretty platforms that I’ll probably save for the day with the least amount of walking.

10. Here to capture memories, and this hands-free chain is my enabler.

11. Dinner dress that’s giving Ms. Mouse.

12. Buttery soft heels that will feel good and look good after putting in miles on your hot diggity dogs.

Some of the best pieces in my closet have lived a life before they make it to me, and perhaps that’s why they’re amongst my most beloved. I wonder if they traveled to Paris, or fashion week or if they went somewhere I’d love to be. I imagine they were there for a special life moment, a wedding or an engagement dinner — perhaps a party. What happened to their owner? Did they outgrow it? Move somewhere new? Do they only want the latest season? I wonder if the clothes get their feelings hurt when they’re left in the dust, and as such I try to treat these pieces with extra attention.

Of course I remind myself that secondhand doesn’t necessarily mean old (so perhaps I’m attaching feelings that are mine alone), but of course it can. I do not discriminate. I peruse sites like The Real Real, Vestiaire, Ebay and Etsy for pieces from prior seasons that I didn’t snag the first time, for items that look like they were made for me and for options that elevate my wardrobe.

Buying pieces not everyone else has has its perks, and if you’re looking to build this part of your wardrobe, here are a few tips I go by (and some finds I think you may love).

1. If you see it, snag it. Some of the items come up once in a lifetime and if you’ve been scouring and find it, you have to act since somewhere, someone else is probably looking for it too.

2. Set parameters on your search. Determine when you start shopping what it is you’re looking for, and narrow by designer. This provides some guardrails (unless you have hours and hours). You can go down many rabbit holes looking for secondhand finds, so may just depend on the time you want to devote. Editor’s Picks on The Real Real is favorite way to search, and I hear Japanese eBay has amazing bags, but I’ve yet to hunt there.

3. Check condition and notes. The photos don’t always tell the story, but everyone’s threshold for what they’re willing to accept is different. If the find is that good, you may be willing to take something in a less than perfect condition (as is the case with me). Some sites like Vestiaire have an extra quality check that happens post-purchase and they’ll let you know if something doesn’t pass - you can then decide whether to proceed with the order.

The easiest way to say spring without uttering a word, this pattern is perfect, especially in pastel. Adore that these are *paper* which is extremely hard to find, and wonderful for class parties and picnic tables alike.

A Little LoveShackFancy

This works well whether you have a tween (who may be on the front end of her LoveShackFancy awareness journey) or are a mom who appreciates pink, blue and bows. Fun fact: I interned at Cosmopolitan Magazine in 2006 when Rebecca Hessel (not yet Cohen) was the Associate Fashion Editor (that was the summer I learned what a Goyard bag was from Rebecca herself). Watching the brand explode has been the most fun, and we are big fans.

Ending is never easy, so in closing I will share that sometimes, try as I might to think of it all, I forget things too. Often, in fact.

The one thing that falls off from time to time? Fresh flowers. They make everything prettier, and in my opinion can throw a table if they’re the wrong color. So, be sure to plan ahead (again, note to self). Whether it’s a bouquet from your garden, the grocery store or Grace Rose Farm…plan well and you’ll be set for spring!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Our espresso machine got us through the pandemic, as did this coffee. We use whole beans, but I bet the grounds are just as good. I love it in my normal oat milk latte, and it’s excellent without milk. My Amazon reports that I’ve ordered it 37 times, a low read considering how many bags I order each time. Let’s also not lose site of the times I ordered on the direct site when Jeffrey B was out of stock.

Dae Detangling Brush

I’m embarrassed how many of these brushes I have purchased — not because they need to be retired or get gross. No, we still use them all. It’s just that we were fighting over them, so now each child has their own, I have mine and we have an extra for our swim bag. Totally painless wet hair brushing is key when you have tangly kids!

Clean Skin Club Clean Towels

Since starting to use these cloths to wash my face every night, I’m a new woman. Not only do I not have a wet, gross washcloth that I don’t exactly know what to do with (sometimes inhibiting my desire to actually wash my face before bed, I know), my skin has never looked better. It’s hard to know what’s hiding in your towels that could be irritating your skin, and it’s evident that this makes a difference.

Evereden Kids Face and Body Wash

We’ve been using this clean kids brand for almost a year now and I love that it’s non-toxic and works well for different stages, considering our 6 year age gap. From their shampoo and body wash to their face soap (which comes in a cool foaming container that’s just like my grown up Caudalie foaming cleaner that I adore and should also make this list), this brand is heavily integrated in our daily routine.

The Cocoon Cleanse is a soap, body wash and shaving cream in one, and it’s the product that sold me on Hanni. Beyond being beautiful itself (not not something I think about), it’s a luxurious serum cleanser that looks like a bar of soap but leaves your skin feeling moisturized and smooth, without any residue. The packaging is eco-friendly, each launch outsmarts the last and it doesn’t hurt that founder Leslie Tessler is a former L’Oreal exec and also the coolest lady in Atlanta.

Mission Mighty Me Nutty Puffs

Introducing peanut and tree nut products to your littles can be stressful, but Mighty Me made it easy. With trace amounts of nuts in their puffs, but enough to expose children to prevent a potential allergy, this company founded by a friend (and allergy mama) is one we love in our house — and used for this very purpose with both Jennings and George. My kids sit down any time we go to dinner out and ask for their Mighty Me, and I’ve been guilty of snacking on it too. Obviously speak with your pediatrician before trying, or head to their brilliantly clear packaging for age and stage info.
