Parenting Confession

I’m hoping to stay a video game free household forever 7 ever amen. Over the Summer papi discovered those annoying ass YouTube videos of teenagers playing video games with feels a little too close to the sun. My immediate irritation that takes over my body when I hear them pop up on the living room tv, I cannot put into words. I’m strict as hell with YouTube and limit it as much as possible. I did some research over the summer and the findings about what these types of videos do to their underdeveloped brains is f*cking bananas. BANANAS! So now I’m trying to decide if I should put a hard stop to all YouTube or are we in too deep. Ugh I’m annoyed with myself that I started allowing it in the first place

I love a damn clog. Maybe I’ll wake up from this delirium but for now (& for the last ??? idk how long) I think a clog is just so random & kind of silly that it’s ultra chic. I was gifted these from Seavees & I’m elated to add another color to my closet (I have the hunter green pair already). I went with the yellow because fun but also because I already have another similar black Prada clog (found a pair on the real real) and I love them dearly. God I love a clog

Something funny to chew on

Anytime someone pisses me off or it’s even funnier to use at the slightest inconvenience. I love to say, “who knew the doghouse had a basement”. Your sister doesn’t answer the phone when you call? Who knew the doghouse had a basement. Your friend cancels dinner plans (ew)? Who knew the doghouse had a basement. I throw this shit around like candy & it makes me giggle every time

Skin Theory

This moisturizer has been all over my feed & then my Derm recommended it so, say less. Very affordable and performs like it forgot its price point. It leaves my skin soft, hydrated, and noticeably plumper, and it’s become one of those products I keep recommending because it works so well.

It’s a terrifying season of life. The hardest part isn’t making the decision. It’s trusting yourself enough to believe you’re making the right one.

Because how do you know whether you’re truly unhappy... or just exhausted? Whether your marriage is broken... or you’re simply stuck in a really difficult season? Whether you’re craving a different life... or just a break from the one you’re living?

I don’t think there’s a perfect formula for answering those questions. Every marriage is different. Every reason for leaving is different.

But after going through my own divorce and talking to many people who’ve gone through theirs, there’s one piece of advice I find myself coming back to over and over again.

First Things First

I’m an avoider to my core. It’s both one of my greatest strengths and one of my biggest opps. I’m an excellent starter, if something needs to begin, I’m the girl to call. But finishing? That’s another story (I should have been a man).

When I started this Substack, I didn’t have a clear direction. I only knew what I didn’t want (a fashion-only column) and what I did want: a glimpse into the more honest parts of my life that only my real-life friends get to see.

I’m cautious about what I share online, and I like it that way. The internet is forever, and I’m a mom. But if you’ve ever met me in real life, chances are I’ve told you my deepest, darkest secrets within the first three minutes. I love asking questions. I love learning about people. What makes you tick? What’s the most tragic thing that’s ever happened to you? Have you read that book about the nurses in Vietnam?

Quite honestly, I won’t shut the fuck up until my social battery is drained. The one thing I rarely want to talk about? Fashion. I love clothes & there are parts of the industry I find interesting to read about. I love wearing the things I fall in love with, and I’ll happily tell you (and link) where I bought them. But I could not care less about fashion news, trends, or what the “cool girls” are wearing this week. This job has always lacked a certain level of intimacy for me. It’s a surface-level gig that I adore, and even with my complaints, I wouldn’t trade it but I want you to see the different parts of me. My life does not revolve around fashion nor what I’m wearing to school drop off. That is a fraction of my life. There is so much more I want to talk about, to share, to go in such detail it will make your eyes burn. I’ve always used writing as an outlet. I have journals from my dramatic teenage years that make me send an apology note to my mom every time I read them. If I can just get the thoughts out of my head and somewhere on paper, I feel lighter, more at peace with my world and everything in it.

So without further ado, let me re-introduce this Substack as my little corner of the internet where I’m allowing myself to spill it all. We need more written honesty in this world and frankly, fewer podcasts.

I didn’t want to be another Substack in your inbox about what the cool girls are wearing. That feels so forced, like what I should do and one ting about me, I don’t like being told what to do. I want to give you substance, something to chew on, something to feel, for God’s sake.

Mexico City !

This was my first trip to CDMX but it will not be my last! The food, the shopping, architecture, culture, markets etc etc etc made it a 12/10 experience. My favorite restaurants were, Colmado (itsy bitsy btw!), Aguita Fría (pls pls pls order the shrimp, tostada & pistachio ice cream), Jenni’s Quesadilla’s (duh), Santo Spirito & Cafe Nin. Irene Buffa is designer consignment & simply unreal (I bought a new bottega bag for literally 1/3 of the price in store rn) & Erre Vintage for an insane amount of vintage Levi’s.

Which leads me into . . .

I wore this H&M eyelet dress (devastatingly sold out) but I’m hyper-fixated on dainty feminine pieces are not & I can’t stop thinking about this top from Doen. Isn’t it so beautiful. With a pair of boyfriend jeans and sandals, it’s calling my name.

I own a pair of Donni pants that I wear way too much so I bought these buttery yellow Taffeta pants and these white pants because white pants scream Summer (I took an XS in both for sizing ref).

I couldn’t pass up this lace set. Chloe coded but with a Zara price tag. Fingers crossed it’s just as stunning in person !

Mexico City reignited my love for a 70’s vibe that I feel like my closet is missing. My heart wants this Miu Miu tee but my 401k is too important to me so I went with this version that scratched the itch.

I rate the things I love by the love point system as I like to call it. One love means “Ooo it’s caught my attention”, Two loves means “Oh wow that is something alright” but three loves is the ultimate perfect score. Here is a quick list of three love things in no perfect order:

They Say Beauty is Pain, But All I Felt Was the Urge To Rebook

This is the year to perfect my skincare routine. Cut the bullshit out and stick to what works. I’m on my second micro needling treatment with PRP and I already can’t wait for my next. The “downtime” is so minimal (24 hours) and it leaves my skin so bright and glowy. Micro needling every 6 weeks, regularly using retinal, scrubbing my face with this every morning (I need to talk about this, it’s a miracle worker & recommended by every Derm/medpsa I’ve been to) and using my red light mask daily, my skin is skinning for the long haul.

Time Well Spent

Now that’s it’s getting warmer, I’ve made it a point to spend at least an hour outside playing with Papi once he gets home from school. Leave my phone inside, fully focused kind of playing and when I tell you it fills my cup, I go to sleep at night and it’s the highlight of my day. Playing and focusing on Mateo is my top priority as his mom but I’m also guilty of multitasking. I’m the Queen of multitasking (which I actually take pride in) & it’s the only reason why I get anything done being a mostly single mom. If we’re inside playing like we often do, it’s easy to grab the laundry from the dryer, do the dishes blah blah which is FINE & NORMAL. I do it all of the time but I wanted to start making it a point to give him my undivided attention daily. One of my ultimate goals in parenting is to have a child who wants to come home when he’s older. I want him to feel comfortable enough to share anything with me and the way to achieve that is through quality time.

EMMY’S ADVICE COLUMN

A reader wrote “I’m a single mom looking for a job I can manage at home. Can you tell us more about what you do?”

Sure! In short, I work in marketing which is often times a remote position. My previous experience was with a firm whose focus was on attorneys so that’s all I knew for a while. Since my job shift in January, I now “freelance” market for a few different companies. I found both of these companies through word of mouth, which I’m so so thankful for. If you’re looking for a remote position I would focus on marketing//social media marketing or being a (virtual) personal assistant. LinkedIn & Glassdoor are a few of the best resources for these types of jobs, besides word of mouth.

Ok! I’ve got to run! We’re heading to my parents house for the weekend to celebrate Easter & I have an hour to pack, get ready & pick up Papi from school.

Let’s get started!

As a quick refresher, I’m sharing all of my loves for the week! A few fashion finds mixed with a bunch of randoms! Ok- let’s go!

I had dinner with my one of my gf’s last night, Livy. She’s my oldest friend in Atlanta. When I first moved here, I went to Bloomingdales and bought a top from AllSaints where she was the manager at the time. When she was checking me out, she asked for my address and come to find out, we lived in the same complex! We giggled about it & went on about our days. A few weeks later, I’m driving into my building while she happens to be driving out, we both come around the corner at the same time and she almost hits my car (which is so hysterical because on Thursday night omw to dinner she pulls out in front of me without even knowing it hahaha)! We both stop and started laughing when we recognized one another. We’ve been inseparable since! We used to live one floor apart and 99% of my early Atlanta memories involve Livy. We even worked together at one point & would get drunk off sangria’s at CPK in the mall on our lunch hour. Everyone deserves a Livy! She is gold.

A PASSION 4 FASHION

I wore this stunnninnnggggg velvet skirt from Renggli with this J.Crew sweater & these heels from Jimmy Choo that are bananas. My Theresa graciously sent me these as a gift and I’m so grateful!

I ordered this dress a few days ago & I’ve found myself checking the delivery status because I’m so excited to wear it. You should see the back! As it pertains to Summer, 90% of what I buy depends on whether or not it has an interesting back or not.

I want these socks so bad. Like- how cute with a pair of shorty shorts, a Summer sweater, these sock and loafers. I live near a Kule store & I think I’m going to stop by today. I should get them right???

My favorite places to (online) shop are Fwrd, The Frankie Shop & probs Zara right now. Fwrd being my go to because they just have so much cool shit. Speaking off, should I buy this? With a white tank and cool sandals.

NON FASHION RELATED LOVE LOVE LOVES

I’m listening to this book right now, “None of This is True” and it’s excellent! I haven’t been this into a book in a while. I’m a little over half way through and every chance I have a spare 5 seconds I put it on because I’m dying to know more of Josie & Alex’s story. In short, Alex is a successful podcaster with somewhat of a picture perfect life. She meets Josie, whose life is much more complex. Alex has Josie on her podcast while Josie unfolds all of the complexities of her life but now we don’t know if Josie is actually coo coo or is her husband, Walter the villain! I have to find out!

You know how I told you last week my new found passion for Class Pass & I can’t help myself but to try every workout in this city! On Thursday, I tried Pvolve. OK- I have thoughts! I loved the vibe of the studio first off, it was very aesthetically pleasing & the lighting was exactly what you want for a workout. Everyone was so friendly (which doesn’t always happen) but the workout itself was. . . odd? It’s kind of like a mix between mat pilates & your mom’s workout class she takes at the Y every Tuesday. I’m certainly not convinced this is what Jennifer Anniston does to stay in shape! There were parts of it that were slightly more difficult than others but my over arching opinion is it was pretty chill. The mat with the numbers is how the instructor directs your form basically. i.e “Left leg on 1 and right on 3”. Idk what I thought it would be more complex than that but no, pretty straightforward. I would still tell you to try it but it’s not something I would make part of my normal routine.

Lisa writes: “I’m wanting to start dating again after divorce and it’s so scary out there. Any advice?”

Dating after divorce is one of the scariest things I’ve ever done. Putting yourself out there to become vulnerable again is not for the faint of heart so congratulations on doing so! My first piece of advice is to take it slow. I was telling this to a friend recently, there needs to be space between your divorce and a new relationship. You need time to heal. That could be a few months or a few years depending on where you’re at but I think that step is important. Secondly, be bold about it! If you see a man you want to talk to, go talk to him! Men love when women are confident- I promise he won’t think you’re weird for doing so! You have to put yourself out there to meet new people. Dating apps, going out with friends more, joining a softball or tennis league or even grabbing dinner alone and sitting at the bar. Be open to new conversations and friendships. My last piece of advice is recognize why your marriage failed and write it down on paper. A few bullet points or sentences as to why it didn’t workout and be aware of those when starting a new relationship. We will often get right back into the same situation we worked so hard to get out of because it’s familiar. If you see one red flag or something feels off, don’t ignore it. Move on swiftly and confidently. Trust your gut & know the universe has the person for you.

Alright! I gotta run! Papi is with his dad this weekend so I’m checking as many things off my list as possible. About to go to my favorite place (Home Goods) and then I signed up for a solidcore class (a certified class pass whore!). Yay weekend!

MY VOW TO YOU

I promise to meet you in your inbox once per week on Fridays. It’s the happiest day of the week in my humble opinion so that’s why I chose that day! I’m putting this paragraph at the top because it’s not lost on me that most of you are here for this & who am I to deprive you of your own desires! I haven’t shopped in what felt like ages so it was fun to make a few online purchases! Does anyone ever really shop in January/February? ewww

This shirt makes me gig every time I see it! I bought it to wear as a swimsuit coverup because HOW FUN IS THAT !

I bought this cutie little tee because it reminds me of my dad & how silly it is that I am from Alabama with deep Southern roots. I once did one of those DNA test & the results make me laugh every time I think of it. In short, it said, girl you are WHITE that’s it. Like, we can’t find a tie to any place other than Alabama, we’re so sorry. Why did 23 & me insist on burning me like that??? My biggest upset in life is that I’m not ethnically diverse. That’s also why I would never date a white guy (no offense)! I have to add some color to this lineage. I take this role very seriously!

THE THREE LOVES BREAKFAST

It’s the ultimate breakfast experience! I like to start my day with something yummy but also reasonably healthy because it makes me feel good. I also love consistency with my food. I like to eat the same things everyday during the week. Also, everyone should find an egg lady near you. I have an egg lady (whom is lovingly saved in my phone as egg lady) where I purchase fresh eggs, homemade bread (seen here!) and honey from and it’s a highlight of my day everyday. Love you egg lady!

THE THREE LOVES EXPERIENCE

It’s no surprise to anyone that I love moving my body but I am a downright dirty ass ho for a group fitness class. My god the joy it brings me! So recently, I joined class pass (not sponsored btw!!!) and I’m way too into it. It’s all I talk about now & how late am I to the party which is v chic though may I add. It’s most certainly not the most cost effective way to fitness but I love that I can try new classes every week. So far I’ve tried, Barry’s (4 stars), Two local HIIT Classes (3 stars), SolidCore (5 stars), Hot Pilates at Sweat Ext (5 stars) and next week I’m signed up to try Pvolve which is apparently has something to do with Jennifer Anniston and dancing?? Idk nor do I care but I’m excited! I’ll let you know how it goes!

ULTIMATE THREE LOVES

Lastly, UGH being a mother is just the most fun, greatest thing I could ever experience in my life. Five is such a fun age! I’ve been planning all of his little Summer camps he will be attending and I’m so excited for him! I’ve spent WAY too much time planning each week making sure we hit all of the camps I know he will love and all of the ones I know will be good for him! He’s a shy guy so some will be stretching him outside of his comfort zone but stretching is good! I never went to Summer camp as a kid, me & my siblings stayed at home and played outside for hours on end. I want him to have that experience too one day but for now, we’re taking the lady gaga approach. Camp, Camp, another camp, No sleep!

EMMY’S ADVICE COLUMN

I’m often asked for advice when it comes to divorce and relationships for the obvious reasons (I got divorced a little over 2 years ago for those who are new). I feel so honored that anyone would come to me and ask for advice on this because I know how deeply painful and vulnerable it is to be in this spot. I had this saying during the first few months of divorce that helped me so much. I stole it from my favorite book & thought about it daily. “Attack the day before it attacks you.” Meaning, get up and out of bed with a plan, especially on the days your child might be at the other parents house for the day/weekend if that’s your situation or even if you are in the beginning/hard stages of divorce. I made a plan every day to get myself out of bed, move my body, see friends, call my mom or sister, go for long walks and do something I love. It’s not to say that staying busy and avoiding the pain is the answer because there are times you need to allow your body to grieve. I’m talking about making space for both of these things! Journaling helped a ton along with seeing a counselor whom now I want to kiss on the mouth because I love her so much. Routine & consistency will get you out of a dark spot if you allow it too- I promise!
