We talk, explore, go on adventures together and start slowly building towards something. When parameters inside of the relationship or dynamic shift, that becomes the moment we are allowed to question whether the relationship still meets what we need.

Why do we stay when something that started on that ground has changed, and now we feel we have to sacrifice more just to keep it?

I think part of the problem is that we remember what we originally said yes to. We remember the person, the connection, what was being built, and the understanding we had when we chose each other. So, when something changes, we do not necessarily look at what is in front of us as something new. We keep seeing it as the same relationship with a problem we need to work through.

That can make moving goalposts surprisingly easy to accept.

One person changes what they need. Maybe their priorities shift. What they want can change, and suddenly you are being asked to live inside a relationship you never actually agreed to. That does not make them wrong for wanting something different. People are allowed to change.

But the other person is allowed to look at those changes and say, I didn’t choose this.

Instead, people often start negotiating against themselves. They give a little here, swallow something there, tell themselves they are being understanding, and try to find another compromise because losing the person feels worse than losing another piece of what they wanted.

That is where compromise can become difficult to recognize.

There is a difference between choosing to give something because the relationship matters to you and giving it because you believe that is now the price of keeping someone. One still has choice inside it. The other begins to feel like an admission fee you have to keep paying just to stay.

And maybe that is why people can remain in something long after they know it no longer fits. They are not only attached to what exists today. They are still trying to get back to what they had.

They give up more, thinking somewhere along the way it will start feeling like it used to. But at some point, you are not fixing what changed. You are chasing something that is already gone.

Loving someone does not mean every change gets a yes. You chose the relationship you had. You still get to decide whether the one in front of you is something you would choose now.

At some point, the harder question may not be how much more you are willing to compromise.

It may be how much of yourself you are willing to give up before admitting this is no longer what you said yes to.

Work With Me

I offer private, confidential, and affordable support offsite. It is realizing they are still willing to take pieces of the present.

They come back just enough to keep something alive. A message. A little attention. A night that feels bigger than it probably should because there is history sitting underneath it.

Then they leave again.

You already know where this goes. That is almost what makes it worse. There is no real confusion about the ending anymore. The confusion is why someone who knows they cannot choose you still feels entitled to keep reaching for you.

Sex can muddy that fast.

Being wanted in that moment can make the difference between desire and being chosen go out the window for a while. You get the heat, the attention, and enough of the person you kept hoping would stay to forget what happens when they leave.

Morning has a way of clearing that up.

There is something brutal about being deeply wanted by someone who has already decided where you do not fit.

Maybe they care or the desire is completely real. None of that changes the empty space afterward.

Eventually, the question stops being whether they will ever give you more.

It becomes how much of yourself you are willing to keep handing over to someone who already knows they are leaving with it.

Work With Me

I offer private, confidential, and affordable support offsite. I am not. I want people in my life. I just make it pretty damn hard for them to get very far in.

Every once in a while, I meet someone I actually would like to get to know better, that is when my head starts doing speed laps. What do they want from me? Should I even open my mouth before I regret not just keeping it shut? I am looking at ways they want to hurt me before I even know who they are.

Closeness is not really the issue. Feeling safe once somebody gets close is.

I have become very good at keeping a certain amount of distance between myself and other people. Most of the time it probably does not even look like distance. I can talk. I can laugh. I can be open about plenty of things. You can know quite a lot about me and still never get anywhere near the parts I actually protect.

That did not happen because I woke up one day and decided people were terrible.

It happened over time.

You finally let somebody get close and then find out they liked the access more than they liked you. Worse is when they tell you they understand why trust is hard, right up until you disagree with them or stop giving them what they came for. Then you get to watch the warmth shut off.

After enough of that, caution starts making a lot of sense.

The strange part is that I can see what it costs me.

There are probably people I have kept at a distance who never intended to hurt me. Opportunities for friendship have likely passed because I was waiting for the catch. At times, I have probably mistaken genuine interest for somebody wanting something from me because life taught me to look for the second motive before trusting the first one.

That can get lonely.

But loneliness has never been the final chapter.

There is also relief in knowing nobody has enough access to do much damage. Nobody gets close enough to disappoint you in the places that matter. You do not have to wonder whether someone is being genuine because you never give them enough of yourself for the answer to become important.

That sounds bleak when I put it into words.

It also feels safe.

And that is the part I think people miss when they tell someone they need to let people in more. The person keeping everybody at a distance knows what they are missing. They may want closeness badly enough that it hurts.

What they may not know is whether the risk is worth taking again.

I still have moments when I think maybe I should be less guarded. Then I remember how many times taking that chance seemed to confirm the exact reason I was guarded in the first place.

I sit with both of those things.

I do not particularly want to spend my life keeping everybody outside. At the same time, I understand why some part of me keeps reaching for the lock.

Isolation may be my enemy, but at least it’s the friend I can trust.

Work With Me

I offer private, confidential, and affordable support offsite. You are there trying to figure each other out in real time, showing up as an actual human being, while somewhere off to the side you are being compared to a version of the past that has already had the rough edges sanded down.

The past gets an unfair advantage because time has already cleaned up a lot of the mess. The arguments, the bad moods, the missed calls, the money stress, all the little things that would have made them harder to live with start fading. You have no such protection. You have to be real.

And that is a hell of a disadvantage.

The past can become cleaner with time. Certain moments get held onto while others slowly lose their edges. What could have been sometimes becomes more powerful than what actually was. Eventually, you are not competing with another human being anymore. You are up against a version that has been protected from reality.

How exactly are you supposed to beat that?

That can mess with your head because nothing may look obviously wrong. You just keep getting this sense that whatever you bring is not quite enough, and eventually you start looking at yourself for the reason. Meanwhile, the real problem may be a comparison nobody ever told you was happening.

But the comparison was never fair.

The person standing in front of us has to be complicated. They have to have flaws, needs, limits, and days when they are difficult to love. Anyone kept safely in the past gets to escape all of that.

Of course, someone who mattered is going to stay with you in some way. Old relationships leave things behind, even after you have moved on.

The trouble starts when the person beside you is expected to compete with someone who no longer has to be real.

Work With Me

I offer private, confidential, and affordable support offsite. Not because I disagreed with someone’s kink, not because I wanted an argument, and certainly not because I think everyone needs to practice BDSM the way I do. What bothered me was the repeated presentation of manipulation, dependency, emotional leverage, and coercive control as some deeper or more advanced form of Dominance.

One writing described taking someone’s abandonment issues and using them to make that person feel safe only under the Dominant’s control. It talked about using the wound, conditioning the fear, teaching the person that panic quiets through obedience, and eventually making that attachment so strong that leaving becomes harder. Another described systematically removing someone’s independence until they could no longer imagine making basic decisions without the Dominant. Yet another person wrote about intentionally withholding attention because rejection and silence can hurt a submissive more than physical punishment.

That is not psychological sophistication. It is manipulation.

Knowing where someone is vulnerable does not make you skilled. It just means you know where they can be hurt. Submission does not make those fears, insecurities, or old wounds yours to play with however you want. If you are taking those things and using them to make someone easier to control, harder to leave, or more dependent on you, that is not some deeper form of Dominance. That is a problem.

You are talking about manipulation.

This is also why I get frustrated with performative conversations about predators and community safety. It is very easy to post that predators are bad, that men should speak up, or that good people need to call out harmful behavior. Those statements cost almost nothing.

Today there was something concrete sitting directly in front of me.

Someone presenting himself as a trainer and guide was publishing material that described using emotional vulnerabilities to increase dependency and control. I said something. Other people started reading it, saw the same problems, and spoke up as well. The comments were deleted, people were blocked, and eventually commenting was restricted.

That is the kind of thing I think we should actually be paying attention to.

Predatory behavior does not always arrive looking sinister. Sometimes it comes wrapped in words like training, ownership, healing, guidance, protection, or advanced Dominance. Sometimes the person sounds confident, experienced, thoughtful, or psychologically informed. That presentation does not make the underlying behavior healthy.

The question should always be what the behavior is actually doing.

Look at what is actually happening to the person. Are they able to make their own choices, and leave if they decide they had enough? Or have they become more dependent on your approval?

That difference matters.

And this matters because newer people are reading these writings. People with real emotional vulnerabilities are reading them too. Some will assume that because something is described as “training” or “Total Power Exchange,” it must be an accepted part of BDSM.

It isn’t.

If the way you gain control is by abusing someone’s emotional wounds to make them dependent on you, or keep them in line, you can dress it up however you like. It is still manipulation.

That is not deeper Dominance.

That is coercion.

And sometimes, it is predatory behavior.

Work With Me

I offer private, confidential, and affordable support offsite. The one who holds their ground, keeps going, takes the hit and carries on as though nothing really touched them. There is something about that kind of person we admire.

But I am not sure remaining unchanged is the same thing as being strong.

Life shapes us. People affect us. Loss alters us. Sometimes what happened leaves us more cautious than we used to be. At some point, we stop handing out trust so easily. Then we have to face that what we kept excusing was taking more from us than we wanted to see. Then life hits you from the other side and shows you that gripping too hard can wear you down just as badly.

None of that means we broke.

I think there is a difference between being able to stand your ground and becoming so fixed that anything capable of moving you feels like a threat.

There are things I believed ten years ago that I do not believe anymore. There are people I would have tolerated then who would not make it very far into my life now. There are also things I once thought I could never forgive, understand, or accept that look very different to me today.

That is not weakness. That is what living does.

Sometimes strength is knowing where you cannot bend because doing so would mean betraying something important inside yourself. Other times it is realizing that you have been holding your position long after the reason for holding it disappeared.

The difficult part is knowing which one you are doing.

Maybe resilience was never about coming through everything untouched. Maybe that was an impossible standard we created because being affected can feel too much like admitting something got to us.

Of course it got to us.

Some things should.

Being shaped by what happened to you does not mean it defeated you.

Sometimes the change is the proof that it didn’t.

Work With Me

I offer private, confidential, and affordable support offsite. Maybe eventually it does. But there can be a lot to grieve before you ever get there.

In a D/s relationship, you may not only lose the person. You can lose the rituals, the structure, the language between you, the role you inhabited, and a part of yourself that only existed inside that particular dynamic. Even when you know something could not continue, those things do not suddenly stop mattering.

And I think that reaches beyond kink.

When you have spent enough time building a life around someone, taking yourself back also means dismantling parts of the life you built with them. Some of those parts may have hurt you. Others may have been deeply meaningful. Usually, it is not as clean as deciding which was which.

Getting yourself back can be the right thing and still feel like losing something.

Taking yourself back can feel less like freedom and more like standing in what is left after something mattered and failed.

You can still ache for parts of it and know damn well you would lose yourself if you went back.

Work With Me

I offer private, confidential, and affordable support offsite. More patient. Less complicated. You start shaving pieces off yourself because perhaps this version will finally be the one they can love properly. Eventually you are doing so much work to earn their approval that you barely notice how much of yourself has been dragged into the bargain.

And they still might not give it to you.

That is where things can get ugly. After enough rejection, distance, or indifference, the question slowly changes. It stops being about what they are capable of giving and starts becoming something much more personal.

What is wrong with me?

Another person not loving you the way you hoped does not answer that question.

Our brains are very good at appointing certain people as judges without ever asking whether they deserved the job. Their attention becomes evidence. Their affection starts carrying far more weight than it should. Approval feels like the final ruling on whether we are good enough.

Then you finally get some of it and discover the relief does not last very long.

Now there is something else to worry about. They could change their mind. They might see something in you they do not like. The version of you they accepted may need to be maintained indefinitely, because losing their approval would seem to confirm every ugly thing you feared before you had it.

What was supposed to make you feel secure becomes another thing you are terrified of losing.

Of course, being liked matters. Getting rejected by someone you really wanted something from can mess with you. You start wondering what they saw in you that made them decide you were not worth choosing.

The trouble begins when their choice becomes your evidence.

Someone can misunderstand you without defining you. They can decide you are not what they want and still be wrong about what you are worth. A person can walk out of your life without somehow taking the valuable parts of you with them.

There are people who have spent half their lives auditioning for one person who was never going to clap.

Eventually there is a harder question than how to finally win them over.

How much longer are you willing to stay on that stage?

Work With Me

I offer private, confidential, and affordable support offsite. Before long, you are the one they look toward when things start going sideways. Something breaks and somehow you are already halfway through fixing it. After enough years of that, being capable stops being something you do and starts becoming part of who you think you are.

That can get messy.

Eventually there will be something you cannot fix. You may not know the answer, or you are exhausted and simply have nothing left in the tank. Someone else may even be perfectly capable of handling it without you.

And that can feel awful.

Not because the problem is particularly important, but because standing there with nothing useful to contribute can leave you wondering what your role is now.

Competence can become a comfortable hiding place. If you are always the one carrying the toolbox, nobody gets much chance to notice what happens when your hands are empty. Solving the problem, organizing the mess, and keeping things moving becomes normal. Sitting back while someone else handles it feels almost unnatural.

There is also a nasty little bargain hiding in there. Being capable gets rewarded. People start trusting you and depending on you because they know you will come through.

So why would you ever put the toolbox down?

Because eventually capable can turn into trapped.

Before long, you are picking things up before anyone asks. Rest starts feeling lazy because there is obviously something you could be doing. Handing it over is irritating when you already know you could sort it yourself. Then you have to sit there and watch somebody else do it their way, which can drive you nuts.

The harder lesson is letting some things stay out of your hands. Somebody else may need the chance to work it out. A problem can sit there for a minute without becoming yours. Having no answer does not suddenly make you less valuable.

Being capable was never the problem.

Believing you always have to be is.

Work With Me

I offer private, confidential, and affordable support offsite. The details really do not matter. My computer updated, something broke, and suddenly I could not access the account where most of my work and daily life sits. Eight hours later I was still dealing with Microsoft and getting nowhere. Anger was my first reaction, but truthfully it was fear. Being trapped hits me hard. I could not fix the problem, and all I felt was no control. The worst part is knowing somebody else could help, and all I can do is wait.

And I know where that comes from. My control issues did not appear because I woke up one day and decided I wanted everything done my way. Control became important because there were times in my life when not having it meant I was stuck. I could not leave. I could not change what was happening. I had to wait for somebody else to decide what happened next.

It stays with you.

Years later, you can have a good life. You can know exactly where your trauma comes from. You can have done a tremendous amount of work on yourself and still have something completely ordinary hit the exact wrong place. That was yesterday for me. The computer was the problem, but being powerless was what set me off.

I think people misunderstand this part of trauma when they tell somebody to stop being so controlling or just learn to let things go. What looks like control from the outside may actually be somebody making damn sure they never feel that powerless again. That can show up as planning ahead, keeping things separate, making sure there is another option, or needing a way to solve the problem without depending completely on somebody else.

Most days that probably just looks like independence. Then something takes that away and suddenly the fear underneath it shows itself. Yesterday mine showed itself as anger. A lot of anger. And even knowing exactly what was happening did not magically make it stop.

Knowing what triggers it, does not mean I suddenly stop reacting to it. Yesterday I knew what was happening and I was still angry as hell inside. The fear did not disappear just because I could name it. I just finally saw what was sitting underneath all of it.

The Difference Between Guilt and Responsibility...

Guilt can hit the minute you stop doing what everyone around you had learned to count on.

Chris | Enhanced Mind

Guilt can hit the minute you stop doing what everyone around you had learned to count on. You finally say no, and somehow you are the one sitting there feeling like you have done something awful. Then your mind starts in on you, because that is what it knows how to do. Selfish. Cold. Difficult. Anything that puts you back in the wrong.

That does not mean you did anything wrong.

A lot of people have spent years taking responsibility for other people’s moods. Someone is angry, so they fix it. Someone pulls away, so they chase. Tension shows up and they start apologizing before they even know what they are apologizing for. After a while, guilt becomes the leash. Nobody has to pull very hard because you already know what happens when they are unhappy.

Responsibility is different. There has to be something there. You made a promise and broke it. You caused harm. You avoided something that was yours to handle. Fine. Own it. Deal with it.

But another person being upset because you finally said no is not automatically yours.

That is where this gets ugly, because people who benefited from your silence are not always going to clap when you find your voice. The person who liked you agreeable may suddenly call you selfish. Someone who counted on you folding may start acting like you have become cruel. They may even believe it.

And you may believe them too.

That is the part people do not talk about. Boundaries do not always feel strong. A boundary can leave you feeling off for days. The other person acts hurt, angry, or disappointed, and before long you are thinking about apologizing just to make it stop. Going back starts to look easier, even when you already know exactly what going back costs you. Not because it was healthy. Because at least you knew how to survive it.

Not repair. Not honesty. Just the old version of you back in place, carrying what they never planned to pick up.

So yes, you may feel guilty.

The harder thing to face is whether you actually did something wrong, or whether the relationship only worked because you kept making yourself smaller.

Work With Me
I offer private, confidential, and affordable support offsite. I look at how missing information turns into certainty, how labels replace the individual, and why context can matter without excusing harmful behavior.

What would change if we asked for the missing context before deciding we already knew the whole story?

YouTube
Amazon Music
iHeartRadio

The only show of its kind, with more than 140k downloads!

👉 Follow me on Instagram: @enhancedmind_official

🌟 Don’t forget to hit follow and leave a 5-star rating on Spotify to help others discover the valuable insights shared!
