A sunset was beginning to take shape outside my window. The sky was washing itself in soft pinks, growing richer and deeper by the minute, and I immediately reached for my phone.

I snapped a photo and looked down at the screen.

It wasn’t right.

The colors weren’t what I was seeing. The softness wasn’t there. The depth wasn’t there. So I started editing, trying to make the image match reality.

When I looked back up, the pinks had already melted into glowing oranges.

I took another photo.

Again, it didn’t capture what I was seeing.

Several minutes had passed since I’d first walked over to admire the sunset, and somewhere in the middle of trying to make my phone reflect reality, something dawned on me.

I wasn’t actually watching the sunset.

I was watching my screen.

The realization was stark.

A breathtaking sky was unfolding in real time—changing every few seconds, becoming more brilliant with each passing moment—and I was experiencing almost all of it through the tiny rectangle in my hands. In my determination to capture it, I had stopped seeing it.

So I slipped my phone back into my pocket.

For the rest of the sunset, I simply stood there.

I watched the oranges deepen into fiery reds before softening into dusky lavender. The silhouettes of the trees grew darker against the glowing horizon, and the evening seemed to exhale around me. I let myself marvel at something I couldn’t preserve, couldn’t perfect, couldn’t replay exactly as it was.

And it was enough.

Maybe more than enough.

It made me wonder how often we do this with our lives.

How many beautiful moments do we experience primarily through a screen? How many concerts, vacations, celebrations, quiet mornings, blooming flowers, and spectacular skies do we spend trying to capture instead of simply receiving?

There’s a difference between capturing a moment and living one. One allows us to carry a memory forward; the other allows us to inhabit it while it’s here. Both have value, but they aren’t the same experience.

This isn’t an argument against taking pictures.

I love taking photographs. My photo library is filled with little pieces of beauty: interesting clouds, wildflowers on a walk, soaring hawks, meals shared with people I love, and countless ordinary moments I never want to forget. I smile when I scroll back through them, remembering where I’ve been and what caught my attention.

But this experience reminded me that there’s a difference between capturing a moment and chasing one.

A quick photograph can preserve a memory.

An obsession with getting the perfect photograph can quietly steal the memory altogether.

For me, the invitation is simply to become more aware—to notice when I’ve crossed that line. To recognize when I’m no longer experiencing what’s in front of me but am instead caught in trying to force the image on my screen to reconcile with reality.

The last photo I took that evening is lovely.

But the sky went on to become even more extraordinary after I put my phone away.

I have no photographic evidence of those final moments.

No perfectly edited image to show how brilliant it became.

Only the memory.

And somehow, that memory feels lodged a little deeper than any photograph ever could.

Maybe not everything beautiful is meant to be captured.

Maybe some things are meant to be experienced so fully that they become part of us instead.

As the United States marks its 250th Independence Day and fireworks prepare to light the sky, I’ve been thinking about another kind of freedom.

Not the kind won on battlefields, but the kind won slowly, over years, one deliberate choice at a time.

The freedom to stop abandoning ourselves.

The freedom to notice what is truly beautiful.

The freedom to live according to values that make a life feel expansive rather than impressive.

So today, I offer you the declaration I find myself wanting to sign.

A Personal Declaration of Independence

We hold these truths to be self-evident:

That a meaningful life cannot be measured by productivity alone.

That our worth is inherent, requiring no performance, perfection, or permission.

That nature has always known a wiser rhythm than the one we have created for ourselves.

Therefore, we declare our independence from the forces that diminish our humanity.

We declare independence from the belief that rest must be earned.

From calendars so crowded, there is no room left for living and wonder.

From confusing urgency with importance.

From living so quickly that entire seasons pass unnoticed.

We declare independence from impossible standards of beauty.

From the relentless suggestion that a human body should never reveal time, gravity, growth, aging, childbirth, change, or simply being human.

We choose instead to honor our bodies for carrying us through a lifetime rather than existing merely for approval.

We declare independence from the exhausting pursuit of being liked by everyone.

From shrinking to make others comfortable.

From swallowing our truth to preserve someone else’s version of peace.

From measuring our lives against carefully curated fragments of someone else’s.

We declare independence from the scarcity that teaches us another person’s success is our failure.

From the fear that generosity leaves us with less.

We choose encouragement over criticism, abundance over lack, community over competition.

We declare independence from the illusion that bigger is always better.

We reject the belief that extraordinary moments are the only ones worth remembering.

We affirm that a cup of coffee on the porch, sunlight through leaves, fragrant flowers in bloom, laughter around a dinner table, and a long conversation with someone we love are not the background noise of life.

They are life.

We declare independence from treating the Earth as though it exists only for our convenience.

We choose to notice the hawk overhead, the wildflowers pushing through cracked pavement, the textured bark of old trees, the persistence of bees, the patience of rivers.

That caring for what sustains us is more than a responsibility.

It is an act of gratitude.

We declare independence from the belief that compassion is weakness.

We choose kindness toward strangers.

Gentleness toward those we love.

And perhaps most difficult of all, tenderness toward ourselves.

We declare our independence from becoming so distracted by the world's noise that we no longer hear our own lives unfolding.

We choose attention.

Presence.

Wonder.

Curiosity.

Enoughness.

Expansion.

And in witness of these intentions, with no signatures required but our own daily choices, we commit ourselves—not to perfection, but to returning, again and again, to the life that feels most deeply alive.

Nature is wildly diverse — jagged and smooth, veined and polished, weathered and serene. It bears the marks of time, and we find beauty in all of it: the dips, the bumps, the weathering, the asymmetry, the rough and the smooth.

We stand at the edge of a canyon and marvel at the layers carved into stone. We watch transfixed as sunlight dances across the still surface of a lake. We run our hands across the rough bark of an old tree and call it majestic.

We photograph the winding roots of ancient forests, the ripples in sand dunes, the smooth curves of river stones, the veins in leaves, the cracks in desert earth, and the pale, unbroken surface of new snow.

Nature’s beauty is expansive.

Yet when it comes to the human body, that expansiveness suddenly narrows to a tight, unyielding wire.

We begin to treat one version of beauty as the standard and everything else as a deviation from it.

I have found myself thinking about this disconnect.

Why do some qualities of nature stop being beautiful when they appear on us?

The more I thought about it, the stranger it seemed.

A river is beautiful because it curves and bends. A mountain range is beautiful because it is rugged and uneven. A piece of driftwood becomes more captivating because it has been shaped by years of wind and water.

Time leaves its mark on everything we love in nature.

In many cases, the marks are what make it beautiful.

Yet on our own bodies, we are often taught to interpret those same signs differently.

Wrinkles become something to erase.
Stretch marks become something to hide.
Cellulite becomes something to fix.
Spider veins become something to conceal.

The features themselves are not the problem.

The meaning we’ve assigned to them is.

Somewhere along the way, we trade the wild diversity of nature for a beauty standard that asks us to erase the very evidence of life. We absorb the idea that to be beautiful is to be untouched by time, gravity, growth, aging, childbirth, change, or simply being human.

The standard is not merely difficult to achieve.

It is fundamentally at odds with the reality of being alive.

Nothing in nature remains untouched.

Everything changes.
Everything ages.
Everything carries evidence of the life it has lived.

And yet, when those same realities show up on our bodies, we often respond with criticism rather than awe.

Many of us spend years, if not decades, locked in a quiet battle with our reflection, believing that peace will arrive only after we finally fix the next thing.

But what if peace doesn’t come from changing our bodies?

What if it comes from changing the lens through which we see them?

I don’t expect culture to rewrite its beauty standards anytime soon. I can’t wait for wrinkles, stretch marks, or varicose veins to be universally celebrated before deciding I deserve to feel lovely in my own skin.

If I want a different experience of my body, the shift has to begin with me.

And it can begin with paying attention.

I have to notice the moments when my thoughts turn cruel. The automatic criticisms. The familiar narratives. The judgments I’ve repeated so many times they sound like truths.

Awareness is the interruption.

Once I notice the thought, I can question it.

I can replace it with something more truthful and expansive. Maybe that’ll be body appreciation, or even body neutrality. Or maybe simply reminding myself that my worth is never dependent on the smoothness of my skin.

This is why I’ve begun looking for examples in nature that mirror the features I struggle to accept in myself.

I already find breathtaking beauty in the branching pattern of river deltas that resemble veins, or the rippling surface of wind-shaped sand that echoes the dimpling texture I’ve spent years trying to eliminate. I don’t look at the folds of desert canyons or the wrinkles in ancient tree bark and see flaws.

I see a masterpiece.

By intentionally seeking out these parallels, I hope to bridge the gap in my own mind, taking the awe I already feel for the textured earth and channeling it inward, until my reflection stops looking like an object of shame and starts looking like a landscape.

My body follows the same rules as rivers, trees, mountains, and coastlines.

It changes.
It bears marks.
It carries stories.
It records a life.

And maybe rewilding ourselves begins with seeing that truth clearly, not as a problem to fix, but as something that was never broken in the first place.

Something worthy of respect. Something worthy of awe.

I am not separate from nature.

I am part of nature, and it’s time I learned to look at the landscape of my body and see my wild beauty.

I find there’s something incredibly soothing to my nervous system—almost hypnotic—about watching slow living videos.

Of course, I’m aware of the disconnect. Watching someone else live their life isn’t exactly living my own. But perhaps that’s a topic for another day.

I also understand that these videos are curated. They are intentionally filmed to capture beauty, calm, and moments of peace. Yet the fact that they’re curated doesn’t make the message any less true. What interests me is looking beyond the aesthetic and translating the underlying philosophy into practical, everyday life.

The more I’ve reflected on it, the more I’ve come to believe that slow living rests on two important pillars: intentionality and presence. It’s the practice of consciously choosing where to place our attention and seeking experiences that genuinely soothe our nervous systems.

The world is noisy, and it seems to be getting louder by the day.

Technology is perhaps the clearest example of this paradox. It holds extraordinary potential for humanity, connecting us across oceans and placing the world’s knowledge at our fingertips.

Yet for all its benefits, technology has also disrupted the natural rhythms of being human.

Many of us have become passive consumers, outsourcing creativity, reflection, and even our boredom. We keep our nervous systems on high alert through a constant stream of notifications. There is an unspoken expectation that emails, texts, and messages deserve immediate responses. Our smartphones have become objects of compulsion, pulling our attention toward Instagram, TikTok, news, even Substack, and whatever comes next.

We check them endlessly, often without realizing we’re doing it.

This doesn’t feel like healthy behavior. It doesn’t support mental well-being, restorative sleep, or a nervous system that spends enough time in a calm, regulated state. Yet many of us seem either unwilling—or perhaps unable—to step away.

This is where I think slow living has something valuable to offer.

I don’t believe it’s realistic to imagine our days unfolding like a beautifully edited slow living video. Life is often messy, demanding, and unpredictable. But the philosophy itself contains something worth reclaiming in a culture that constantly competes for our attention.

Slow living invites us to choose rather than react.

It asks us to notice rather than scroll.

It reminds us that our lives are happening right now, not after the next notification, the next task, or the next thing demanding our focus.

As I’ve explored this idea, I’ve realized that many of the changes I’ve made over the past few months are, in fact, slow living moments. They are the moments when I intentionally choose where to place my attention. The moments when I pause long enough to absorb the beauty of a sunrise, enjoy a quiet cup of coffee, or appreciate the natural world unfolding around me.

In many ways, I had already become part of this movement before I even realized it.

We don’t need a perfectly curated backdrop to practice presence; slow living is less about an aesthetic to acquire and more about the calm relief of coming back to ourselves, investing deeply in all the small moments our lives already hold.

Right now, a powerhouse of possibility is humming inside your brainstem.

A small bundle of nerves called the reticular activating system (RAS) is always at work, shaping how you experience the world.

This remarkable system acts like a gatekeeper for your attention, filtering the millions of sensory inputs you’re exposed to every second and deciding what reaches conscious awareness. In many ways, it serves as a bridge between your subconscious and conscious minds.

What fascinates me most about the RAS is that it highlights what aligns with your beliefs, expectations, goals, and current focus. It’s constantly scanning your environment and quietly saying:

Notice this.

This matters.

This is relevant to you.

It’s responsible for what’s often called the “new car phenomenon”—when you suddenly start seeing the exact car you want everywhere.

It’s why, after deciding I wanted to see symbols of love, I began finding hearts everywhere. In the greenery around my home. In clouds. Even in the char marks on flatbread.

But the implications go far beyond hearts and cars.

Whether we realize it or not, we tend to find what we’re looking for.

If you hold the belief that most people are rude, selfish, or incompetent, you’ll find no shortage of rude, selfish, and incompetent people. Your RAS will continuously filter those interactions into your awareness because they match the story your brain already expects to be true.

But if you believe people are generally kind, generous, and helpful, you’ll notice evidence of that everywhere, too.

The truth is that all of those realities exist around us every day.

Kindness exists.
Rudeness exists.
Beauty exists.
Hardship exists.
Opportunity exists.
Disappointment exists.

The world contains all of it.

Simply put, your RAS helps determine what gets emphasized.

That’s part of why our beliefs become so self-reinforcing. Our expectations shape what we notice, and what we notice further strengthens our expectations.

We unintentionally create feedback loops that keep confirming the version of reality we already believe. Meanwhile, the moments that contradict those beliefs often barely register. We quite literally stop “seeing” them.

That’s confirmation bias at work, and clearly a part of being human.

Here’s where things get really interesting:

The RAS is highly trainable.

Which means we can intentionally shift what we notice, what we reinforce, and ultimately, the quality of our lived experience.

To me, that’s profound.

Because if your mind is already searching for evidence all day long, why not consciously guide the search?

Why not teach it to notice more beauty?
More possibility.
More softness.
More wonder.
More moments of connection, joy, peace, meaning, and delight.

Training the RAS is surprisingly straightforward. It begins with small acts of intentional attention.

Here are four simple ways to start:

1. Create a focus list

Write down exactly what you’d like your mind to notice more of.

Not vague goals, but specific things: acts of kindness, synchronicities, creative ideas, supportive people, moments of calm, or beauty in ordinary places.

Reading that list each morning helps orient your attention toward what matters most to you.

2. Practice micro-gratitude

Don’t wait for extraordinary moments.

Actively look for tiny joys: a really good cup of coffee, sunlight through the trees, a stranger holding the door, a text that made you smile.

When you search for small moments of goodness, you teach your brain that those moments matter—and your RAS begins bringing more of them into view.

3. Visualize with emotional detail

Spend a few minutes imagining yourself experiencing the kind of life or feeling you want to create.

For me, that’s a life that feels spacious, intentional, serene, and deeply connected to nature.

Engage your senses. Imagine the environment, the emotions, and the atmosphere.

Research suggests that vivid visualization can activate some of the same neural pathways involved in real experience, which helps explain why repetition matters so much. To your RAS, a vividly imagined experience looks a lot like reality—and it starts scanning for matches accordingly.

Over time, your brain begins treating those emotional states as familiar rather than distant. And there’s something incredibly powerful about making a desired future feel familiar.

4. Ask higher-quality questions

Our brains are constantly trying to answer the questions we ask ourselves.

So instead of:

What else is going to go wrong?

Try:

What’s working well right now?
What beauty am I noticing in this space?
How can I bring a little more ease into this moment?
What possibility am I overlooking?
Where is the hidden magic or opportunity in this situation?

Your RAS treats questions like instructions. It immediately begins scanning for matching evidence.

The more I learn about this system, the more I realize that much of my Expansion Project has simply been an intentional retraining of attention.

When I began paying closer attention to my thoughts…

When I intentionally started looking for more beauty, softness, joy, connection, and possibility…

This is the system I was activating.

I am teaching myself what to notice.

I am reshaping long-held beliefs.

Interrupting old confirmation biases.

Creating new patterns of attention.

This is how we begin to build an existence that feels aligned with what we most want to experience.

And maybe that’s one of the most powerful forms of expansion there is.

Because the direction of your life is shaped not only by what exists around you, but by what you repeatedly allow yourself to see.

So maybe the question isn’t simply:

What are you looking for?

Maybe it’s:

What are you training yourself to find?✨

There is something liberating about a conscious pivot.

That moment when you realize what you’ve been doing simply isn’t working anymore.

Maybe you’ve told everyone about this new path, the one you felt so certain about.
Maybe you’ve invested time, energy, pieces of yourself into it.
Maybe you even made it a hill you were willing to die on.

But then something shifts.

The conviction softens.
The certainty loosens.
Life happens, and the path you committed to starts asking something different from you.

It asks you to shift, too.

For me, it started in January 2025.

I took a step toward expansion without even realizing it.

My husband and I joined a gym, and I started lifting.

Over time, the changes became visible. I grew stronger, my body changed, and I felt capable in a whole new way.

What started as an intimidating environment (I was literally using Google Lens to figure out what equipment was called and how to use it) became comfortable. I found my footing, and I took up space.

Then I found bodybuilding—

the specific structure, discipline, and intentional reshaping of your body.

And I was hooked.

This became my thing. The thing I talked about, the thing I shared, the thing I proudly claimed.

And, as it turns out, the place where my pivot now lives.

Over the course of several months, my body went from whispering to shouting.

Strained wrists,
elbow pain,
muscle strains,
and a Baker’s cyst.

And still… I kept going.

I loved lifting heavy.
I loved watching progress stack up.
I loved the feeling of becoming stronger.

So I convinced myself my body would catch up.

But underneath the denial, there was a truth I didn’t want to face:

My body wasn’t asking me to push through.
It was asking me to change direction.

In all honesty, I think a large part of my resistance came from something deeper.

I didn’t want this to become another thing I had announced only to walk away from.

That dreaded question, “How’s it going with ____?”
the one that lands heavier than it should…
I simply didn’t want to answer it again.

In reality, I don’t think anyone genuinely cares whether I’m exercising or not, let alone what kind I’m doing.

But being preoccupied with ourselves is so human—beautifully, frustratingly human.

We build entire emotional narratives around how we imagine other people are perceiving us. And even when you know that intellectually, the cage you built out of other people’s supposed opinions is incredibly hard to unlock. So I adjusted what I could, made small modifications, and kept going.

But over the past few weeks, this process of conscious awareness has shifted how I see things.

I’m realizing I don’t need to wait for something to fall apart to reconsider it.

I don’t need a monumental reason to change direction.

When I make conscious choices—ones that align with and support my current life and the direction I actually want to go—I am steering my own ship.

No matter how long I’ve held onto a project, a dream, or an identity, I can set it down without shame.

My life is not a performance for other people, and there’s something fantastically liberating about that.

That realization alone feels like a pivot.

So for now, I’m stepping away from bodybuilding and heavy lifting. I’m moving toward a more functional way of training, one that supports my joints, my tendons, my longevity.

This time, changing course feels different.
It doesn’t feel like shrinking, or failure, or embarrassment.

It feels expansive.
Because I’m choosing it.
I’m deciding to set something down.
Because I’m paying attention.

Pivoting can bring us back into alignment with ourselves. And there’s immense power in that.

Recently, I did something new.

Something that is by all accounts absolutely ordinary. But at 54, it was a first.

I went to happy hour.

Yes, technically, I’ve sat at a bar before and had a drink. But that’s not what I mean.

I mean, I went to happy hour for happy hour.

To meet a friend.
To catch up.
To join that end-of-day energy I’ve watched other people participate in.

And honestly, I had such a fun evening.

The place buzzed with conversation and movement. Groups of women leaning towards one another and laughing. People still in work clothes, ordering drinks, and decompressing together after the day.

If you weren’t paying attention, you wouldn’t have found anything special.

But to me, it felt uniquely alive.

There was this shared energy humming through the room — people unwinding, connecting, existing together — and I thought about how many times I’ve watched moments like that from the outside.

Not always physically outside.

But internally outside.

Then I felt something familiar happen.

My friend stepped away briefly to take an important phone call.

Almost immediately, an old thought surfaced.

It wasn’t even a clear thought.

More like a reflex.
A conditioned response.
A piece of old mental wiring activated automatically.

The one that subtly suggests I don’t fully belong.
That other people naturally fit into spaces like this.
That social ease, fun, connection — those experiences somehow belong more to others than to me.

But lately, I’ve been paying closer attention to the stories I’ve allowed to run underneath my life. And because of that, I recognized the feeling.

Not truth…

Habit.

Mental noise.

And instead of shrinking into it, I expanded.

I took a breath.
I looked around.
I grounded myself in the moment.
I let the feeling exist without letting it take over the experience.

I ordered a cocktail I’d never tried before: a Paper Plane.

My son Matthew had recommended it to me with one instruction:

“Fun drinks only.”

That made me laugh when he said it.

It made me smile as I sat there at the bar ordering it.

Because that evening was about fun.

It was about allowing myself to participate.
To try something new.
To stop living like enjoyment, novelty, or belonging are beyond my grasp.

And I’m beginning to realize something important:

Expansion is a slow unfolding, happening through moments that seem insignificant. Through experiences that look ordinary from the outside.
Through tiny decisions to stay present rather than sink into old patterns.

What surprises me most is how these small moments seem to build on one another.

One new experience makes the next one feel slightly more possible.
One interrupted limiting thought weakens the next.
One moment of participation becomes evidence that I can belong in the life I’m trying to create.

The shifts are subtle, but they’re accumulating.

Stacking.
Reinforcing one another.
Creating the foundation for the life I’m building.
Through small, everyday moments, and not one massive reinvention.

Lately, I’ve been thinking about how to initiate small shifts in my life. Once I realized that expansion doesn’t have to start big, I began to wonder:

Okay… what will this actually look like?

Not just in theory, but in reality.
In an ordinary, typical day.

Because it’s easy to feel inspired, and then slip right back into autopilot.

I’ve done that more times than I can count.

And even though I’m convinced expansion begins internally, I believe it eventually starts showing up in tangible ways.

So lately, I’ve been trying something simple.

Nothing structured.
No new routine.
No tracker, no checklist, no “30-day transformation.”

Just paying attention.

To what feels good.
To what feels heavy.
To the moments where I limit myself automatically.
To what I actually want before I default to habit.

That’s it.

And somewhere in all that noticing, something rose to the surface and became clear.

I already know how I want my life to feel.

Lush. Soft. Vibrant. Alive.

I want more moments where I savor things a bit longer.
More moments where I romanticize ordinary life.
More moments where I stop rushing past beauty as if it’s something I’ll come back for later.

And once I acknowledged how I want my life to feel, I began to see all the little ways I sometimes hold myself back, standing in my own way of those experiences.

I’ve begun using mindfulness to observe those moments without getting caught up in them. And instead of spiraling into criticism, I label them and see them as information.

‘Oh, that was shrinking,’ — realizing my mood had dipped after scrolling through highly curated Instagram accounts.

‘That was defaulting,’ — after immediately scanning the menu for the cheapest options instead of looking for what appealed to me.

‘That was rushing,’ — realizing I’d eaten an incredible meal my husband made for us in under ten minutes without truly enjoying it.

Awareness alone seems to be slowly changing things. Simply noticing those moments seems to create space for something different. It bridges the gap between autopilot and conscious choice.

It’s a slow unfolding. 
At times, I’m in deep before I even realize what I’m doing, but it’s enough to begin disrupting the patterns.

I’m becoming more likely to linger a little longer in moments that feel beautiful.

Like choosing to stop and breathe in the honeysuckle blooming in my backyard—sweet, soft, and too good to rush past. 

 
I’m choosing things that feel a little softer, a little more nourishing, a little more alive.

I’m letting myself enjoy experiences more fully.

It’s subtle.
But it feels like an encouraging beginning.

I’m learning how to be in my life instead of just moving through it.

I’m finding that expansion doesn’t have to start with doing more.

It can begin with noticing the life already in front of you…

and softly choosing to meet it differently.

After asking myself, “What if I’m just getting started?”, my mind almost immediately did something.

It went big.

Big ideas.
Big plans.

Big changes.

The desire to overhaul EVERYTHING felt almost irresistible.

New wardrobe.
New daily rituals.
New furnishings.
New lifestyle.

New me.

As if expansion only counts when it’s visible—impressive enough for others to notice.

But what if it isn’t like that? 
What if it’s less about what changes on the outside and more about what shifts within?

Our thoughts.
Our perspectives.
Our beliefs.

The stories we tell ourselves about who we are, and about what is and isn’t possible.

An inside job.

One that doesn’t require jetting off to Bali.
At least not right away. 

While I believe there is value in introspection and understanding the roots of some things, I don’t believe we need to go all the way back to understand everything before we can start moving forward.

That we have to dissect every thought, every pattern, every ‘why.’

I imagine many of us are familiar with getting caught in that loop.
Why am I…
Why do I…
Why anything…

But has that endless, inward spiral ever really helped? Not me. Not once.

So what if the first steps are smaller than we realize?

Small shifts in how we talk to ourselves.
In what we choose.
In where we place our attention.

The kind that adds up over time.

Maybe this is where expansion actually begins.

In those tiny, easy-to-overlook moments.

Not in big sweeping changes,
but in the small decisions we make every day.
The ones that slowly reshape how we experience our lives.

I don’t think we need to upend our lives or become someone entirely new.

But we can become more intentional, more aware.

More willing to listen.
More open to what feels good.
More curious about what else might be possible.

It’s not flashy.
But it’s meaningful.

And right now… that feels like enough. (Bali optional 😊)

What small, subtle changes have been nudging at your attention recently?✨

There’s a question that’s been floating around my mind for a while. Several, actually.
They didn’t arrive all at once, but started slowly, sounding something like this:

Is this all there is for me?
Is there more?

Eventually, they turned into:

What if my most expansive years aren’t behind me?
What if they’re still ahead?

What if I’m just getting started?

As these questions settled in, they began to slowly unravel into an uncomfortable realization: instead of really living my life… I was mostly just moving through it.

And here’s the thing: my life is pretty good.

But it has become small.
Uncomfortably so.

Somewhere along the way, I think I started to believe midlife is supposed to narrow.
That the big decisions are already made.
That life settles into place.
That this is just what happens.

Maybe you believe that too.

And yet… here I am.

Wondering.

Dreaming.

I’ve been feeling more curious lately.
More aware.
More open to questioning what I thought I knew about myself.
What I actually want.
What’s still possible.

What if the stories I’ve been telling myself aren’t the only ones I can choose?

This is where The Expansion Project begins.

To try something new, even if it’s small.
To notice beauty in places I might have overlooked before, even in myself.
To say yes to experiences that stretch me.
To care for my body and mind in a way that feels supportive instead of punishing.

This space is where I’ll share that process.

Some of it will be reflections.
Some of it will be things I’m trying in real time.
Some of it might be messy, or uncertain, or still taking shape.

Not as a plan.
Not as a perfectly mapped-out vision.
But as a willingness to explore.

Not all at once.
Just… consistently.

But all of it will be honest.

We don’t have to overhaul our lives overnight.
We don’t have to become entirely new people.

But we can expand.

In small ways.
