This leads Reacher on the search to uncover what he’s stumbled upon and how to stop it.

Outer Banks (Netflix)

I’m sad this is the final season of this treasure-hunting teenage drama. I will miss The Pogues. If you want to see the show that birthed some of today’s brightest stars like Madeline Cline and Drew Starkey this is where to see them effervescent and seeking revenge.

Novak Djokovic: The Wolf in Winter (Amazon)

A sports doc that’s really about unresolved trauma. If you have no idea who Novak Djokovic is: he’s a tennis superstar who grew up in a war zone, whose family sacrificed everything so he could go on to win 24 Grand Slam titles, the most in men’s history, and an Olympic gold medal. And yet, this man does not get the respect of other great tennis champions like Rafa and Federer. Yes, he’s got a chip on his shoulder. So would you if you were this good and no one ever gave you your flowers.

But what happens when you’ve conquered every title, when you’ve won every medal, but you’re still playing? And what does it mean to be truly free? I haven’t stopped thinking about what it means to strive for something you want desperately and how that wanting can become its own kind of prison. Whether anger is fuel for greatness or just a cage you built for yourself. What it actually means to heal. You don’t have to be an athlete to ask yourself what you’re living for, what you’re trying to prove, and when is enough enough.

I’m using the end of summer as an excuse to go through the New York Times mystery and thriller recommendations. There is something specifically satisfying about reading a murder mystery while lying somewhere pleasant.

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn was #1. I love this book. If you haven’t read it, do yourself a favor. The twist is still one of the greatest.

Welcome to the Obsessions edition of Extremely Helpful where we look at all the things we’ve been obsessed with this summer.

If this newsletter has a mission statement it is that there are good things out there. I keep reading that people don’t read anymore, tv is dead, movies are dying, and we have collectively lost the ability to pay attention. This newsletter is here to say that there are books worth reading, shows worth watching, movies worth leaving the house for, brilliant people making things on youtube, hilarious people on TikTok, delicious things to eat, and things capable of making you so happy they consume your entire personality.

Sometimes the fun is simply in participating. Reading every book nominated for a prize, finding the perfect bird feeder, making homemade pasta, spending a year cross stitching album covers for a quilt that may or may not get assembled. And that’s what I hope this newsletter celebrates. The making. The doing. The watching. And the joy of talking about it.

Earlier this summer I asked what you were obsessed with, and what a fascinating group of people you turned out to be. I love it here.

I have a rant about how I think billion dollar corporations asking people to self finance high production content is a pyramid scheme but I’ll save that for now and instead tell you that Shane Gillis is charming on this show and that if you bailed in season 1 you might want to check back in because it’s grown into a tight ensemble comedy.

My Brilliant Career (Netflix)

Rural Australia, the 1900s. Sybylla wants to be a writer, but every other person in her life needs her to get married. But, like an Aussie Pride and Prejudice, she falls in love despite herself.

Ultimate Girls Trip (Peacock)

The OGs of every Real Housewife franchise travel across America to visit all the cities, and all the characters, that have created a 20 year, 2000 episode juggernaut.

Lanterns (HBOMax)

And speaking of frenemies on a road trip: I did not know one single thing about Green Lantern going in and you don’t need to to enjoy this (inter-galactic) buddy cop investigation set in Nebraska that starts on Sunday.

One Hundred Years of Solitude S2 (Netflix)

A cursed family, magical realism, a literal banana republic, and other disasters large and small.

My Life with the Walter Boys S3 (Netflix)

Here’s what you missed: Jackie’s parents die, she moves from NY to a ranch and falls into a love triangle with the titular brothers. This season: street racing, rodeo, love triangle, community center that needs money, and decisions that need to be made.

Hard Knocks: Seattle Seahawks (Netflix)

This show has been on for over 20 years so you’re forgiven for forgetting how groundbreaking and compelling it is. This very likable and diva-free Seattle Seahawks team, coming off a Super Bowl win, will remind you what a machine a team has to be to win.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (Paramount+)

The most straightforward Star Trek-y of all the new Trek offshoots. Episodic, optimistic, and all the things you want from a show like this.

STILL WATCHING

Married at First Sight We’re coming up on decision day though TBH I thought they were all going to break up at the last couples counseling session. FYI Shawn is promoting a new book about finding love but also apologizing for his “wifely duties” comment. Please, someone tell Adam and Mecca that they need to go to The Hoffman Process. They are repeating their parents’ patterns. And Courtney, girl, if you were any more self-sabotaging you’d be Rhaenyra from House of the Dragon.

Lioness I love thinking about how little Nicole Kidman had to shoot while still appearing in every episode, mostly on the phone. What do we think? A couple of days? A week?

Monsters of God We’ve met chimp people, and tiger people, but I think reptile people may be the a breed all of their own.

Ted Lasso You really can’t help but like the guy.

Late Fame Willem Dafoe is a forgotten poet who gets rediscovered by a group of young artists including Greta Lee.

STREAMING

Maddie’s Secret John Early plays a wellness influencer whose life is much less healthy than what she portrays online. Kate Berlant, Kristen Johnston, and Vanessa Bayer are all in it so the cast alone is worth the $9 to stream this.

Don’t Say Good Luck (Netflix) Sunny Sandler, Adam’s daughter, lands the lead in the school musical just as her Mother’s cancer returns. It’s sweet. You’ll cry.

Girls like Girls (Peacock) Hayley Kiyoko built an entire Intellectual property universe. She turned her 2015 viral hit song into a book, and then into this movie.

The Invite, Minions and Monsters, and Jackass are all VOD. It’ll be a few more weeks before they’re on streaming.

It’s #BamaRush season however our time with this glorious trend may be over. The girls that are serious about rushing a good house are not documenting their experience this year. The ones that are posting are mostly out-of-towners using this to try and build a following. The sororities see them as “not in it for the right reasons” so we probably won’t be seeing any more Kylans. It was fun while it lasted. (Once again Town and Country with the scoop on college life.)

One could say these out of towners are LARPing as southern sorority girls. This article says All of Gen Z is LARP-ing, which means Live Action Role Playing, or as previous generations would called them: fake. posers, phonies, or wannabes.

I buy a COS cashmere sweater every year. For the past 3 years I’ve gotten the oversized Men’s one that fits like The Row Ophelia. This year I got this one that looks like The Row Pato Cashmere Sweater. If you prefer color there’s this blue cardigan which looks great with some washed black jeans. But if you haven’t heard purple is the *the* color this fall. Not for me, due to my unfortunate coloring, but for those of you who do have contrast. This time, a fictionalized Bret and his rich, unsupervised friends are going into senior year in 1981, there’s a serial killer on the loose, a mysterious hot new student arrives and they all start sleeping with, lying to, and suspecting one another.

It’s Less Than Zero, plus a serial killer ala American Psycho, plus a cult. Produced by fellow king of excess, Ryan Murphy.

As with all Ryan Murphy shows, everyone is very good-looking, there are nepo babies, in this case Cindy Crawford’s daughter and Richard Gere’s son, and the costumes, art direction, hair and makeup are all evocative and incredible. I can’t tell if Debbie is wearing current-season Saint Laurent or actual vintage lingerie, but I want all of it.

Monsters of God (HBOMax)

I’m kind of obsessed with Eric Goode. In addition to directing this, and Tiger King, and Chimp Crazy he is also a co-owner of The Bowery hotel, the Waverly Inn, and the El Roblar in Ojai. He’s admitted on camera to engaging with animal smugglers but founded the Turtle Conservancy, And before all that he was an artist and co-owner of the legendary club Area. What a life.

This time he enters the secretive world of reptile smuggling where every person seems to have had at least 3 lives and a decades long vendetta. Josh Safdie is a Producer and Slash contributed original music and I wouldn’t be surprised if you told me they were both exotic animal guys too.

The Challenge: Cutthroat

I have been watching this show since The Real World existed, and I still love it. The cast is essentially a living history of reality television. If you have never watched, contestants from across the reality television universe compete in elaborate physical challenges while forming alliances, hooking up, screaming at one another and carrying grudges from seasons that aired during the Obama administration. It has the strategy of Survivor, the physical competition of American Gladiators and the emotional maturity of a high school cafeteria. I love it there.

The Bombing of Pan Am 103 (Netflix)

Peacock had a version of this last year and now it’s Netflix’s turn. This version focuses on the investigation and the friction between the FBI and Scottish authorities as they painstakingly put the plane back together looking for clues. But you also learn about the people of Lockerbie and how this tragedy affected the town.

Married At First Sight

I need the menswear enthusiasts who read this to weigh in here. What is this look? Is this a trend or is Adam a singular specimen? A few things to note: he is not on vacation, he is in Seattle. He loves ripping it on his jet ski, he plays pickleball 5 days a week, 3 hours a day, loves “pushing himself to the limit” and won’t drink anymore because of inflammation. Is this a Pacific Northwest thing or is it nationwide?

On the occasion of The Shards, let me recommend this juicy podcast on the lore of literary brat pack Bret Easton Ellis, Donna Tartt (The Secret History) and Jonathan Lethem (Motherless Brooklyn) who all went to Bennington College at the same time.

It’s got sex, drugs, jealousy, gossip, and the real people who inspired Rules of Attraction, and The Secret History, and god knows how many other literary characters. Donna Tartt reportedly threatened legal action over it!

The movie is about a family that suddenly finds itself trapped inside a house which sounds scary but perhaps less scary than spending 3 days in August trapped in a glass box above Sunset Blvd.

72 Hours (Netflix)

If you don’t want a scary movie this is a movie about a Bachelor Party that gets tangled up in a criminal operation. Marcelo Hernandez is so naturally charming he practically steals this movie right out from under Kevin Hart.

Tony The pivotal summer Anthony Bourdain spent in Provincetown where he fell in love with food, restaurants, and the chaotic characters that inhabit them.

One Night Only Imagine if Gilead, from The Handmaid’s Tale, was a RomCom. Or The Purge: Sex Edition. Once you get past the premise of the government only allowing one night where single people can have sex, and make the choice to ask no further questions about it, this is cute, and funny, and stars 2 incredibly beautiful people you can’t take your eyes off of: Monica Barbaro and Mr. Dua Lipa, Callum Turner. And sometimes that is enough.

The Idaho Murders. A College Nightmare (Netflix)

There are no new revelations but it does tell you more about the victims and their lives, and it is pretty timely given the accused murderer asked to withdraw his guilty plea this week.

House of Stassi (Hulu)

This show is well made and has a knowing sense of humor about itself, like Stassi herself does. I like all the meta stuff about how she got this show, her complicated feelings about Vanderpump Rules, or how convenient it seems to rekindle a friendship with VPR Alumni, Katie Maloney, in order for her to do the show. Stassi is undeniably a star, always has been. The Mormon Wives, the Nader sisters, Alex Cooper, and Morgan Stewart all make appearances. Like Stassi says: “Synergy loves a Pinot Grigio”

Real Housewives of London (Peacock)

This is not the powerhouse debut that Salt Lake City or Rhode Island were, and I miss the cutting commentary of Ladies of London, but these women have wealth and access to a world we haven’t seen yet.

My Grandfather Charles Manson (Paramount+)

An aspiring, young filmmaker finds out through DNA that her biological Grandfather was Charles Manson so she tracks down all she can starting from his childhood to find out who he was and what genetic legacy she might be facing—and how much of Manson was biological vs. how much was created through a life of trauma growing up in the system. Along the way she starts seeing her own father differently as the parallels pile up. Her interview with the photographer for the Beach Boys is so slimy it’s shocking.

Toxic Love Story (Netflix)

The latest Netflix viral doc. I don’t want to tell you what happens, just that it starts with a US Marshall, his soon to be wife, and his ex-girlfriend stalking them but I think you have to experience all the twists and turns for yourself. It’s a ride.

It occurs to me that many of us are with family and in need of programming to watch with parents, in-laws, and chosen and biological extended families of all types. And good news: mid summer programming is perfect for that!

Shark Week (Discovery/HBOMax)

You can turn on pretty much anything in discovery right now but let me recommend Jurassic Sharks about giant, ancient sharks.

King of the Hill (Hulu)

This show holds up. It’s funny and sweet and it’s nice to spend time with these characters again. Hank gets scammed by an ai chatbot, Bobby tries cooking on camera, and Peggy is going through menopause. It’s been renewed through 2028 already so you can space these out. I feel like comedy is not always served by the binge model.

Nations Dumbest (Fox/Hulu)

Celebrities go ‘back to school” and compete in themed challenges across different subjects in an attempt not to be named Nation’s Dumbest. You know those people who are desperate to be seen as the smartest in the room but then are hoisted by their own petards? That is Andrew Yang, billionaire and ex-presidential candidate. If you like the challenge parts of Big Brother this is for you.

Love at First Sight Begging you to watch this show and talk to me about it. One of the men has “swim socks” he wore on vacation in Mexico and to the water park. To be clear, I don’t mean a neoprene or nylon water sock, I mean a white nike cotton calf sock. Every one of his sartorial choices are so egregious the therapists call him out on it.

In related news: Love is Blind is casting in NY and that season cannot come fast enough.

NextGen NYC I feel like people aren’t appreciating Brooks’ jokes because he’s so deadpan.

House of the Dragon So many terrible royal children in this show. Unrelated, Prince George, the future King of England, is now a teenager. I hope he gets a dragon.

Cape Fear (Apple) Amy Adams vs Juliette Lewis vs Javier Bardem what an embarrassment of riches, of accents, of people doing the absolute most. I can’t wait until next summer’s entry in Apple’s hot sweaty 90’s thriller canon. I’m guessing it will be Presumed Innocent Season 2?

The Ultimatum (Netflix) The way these people weaponize therapy speak. What a bunch.

The Valley All I want from the reunion is to see what Kristen/Luke/Zach have to say about their unwavering support of Danny, the drunken menace. My favorite part so far is the clip where Danny says “even Seth Rogan” defended him, and then Seth Rogan commenting on the clip: “For the record, I think Danny acts COMPLETELY inappropriately!”

🎬 MOVIES WORTH SEEING

You don’t need me to tell you that Spiderman: Brand New Day is all that matters this weekend. Hilariously, after all the embargoes and secrecy the movie was spoiled by a red carpet interview of the streamer Valkyrie asking a mundane question to musician Steve Lacy.

The Dink (Apple) Ostensibly this is about an ex-tennis pro who is forced to play pickleball but it’s really about finding your tribe, and redemption. Another great choice to watch with parents.

Ella Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas” surpassed Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” and Mariah Carey’s “We Belong Together” for most weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 among nonholiday songs by women. Not Salad Salads

Not being able to eat salad has never made me want to eat more salad. Here are some non-lettuce based crowd pleasers.

Panzanella: I can’t stop making this after having a delicious version at a benefit for the Hollywood Food Coalition made with fresh tomatoes from Sunrise Organic Farms. Everyone loves it. Here’s a version with grilled corn.

Chick Pea and Spinach Salad with Cumin Dressing: a recipe I saw on a Food Network rerun in a rental cabin in Big Bear called “The Moose is Loose” and have been making ever since.

The Gap reissued its classic 90s fragrances I credit Heaven with my first falling in love with scents, and learning I loved Bergamot. Dream made me realize I liked vanilla. Grass made me realize things could smell like colors and has always smelled like green. I don’t think I had that feeling again until I smelled DS & Durga Debaser which smells like cut green stems to me.

For the non fragrance obsessed, Bergamot is a very popular note in scents. It’s a weird looking citrus fruit that is too bitter to eat but its oil creates a sharp, refreshing fragrance. It’s what turns black tea into the soft orange-y floral flavor of Earl Grey tea.

I’ve been chasing those bergamot and vanilla top notes since those first Gap fragrance days. These are the summer scents I’ve been rotating between:

Portofino 97 This smell is addictive. It smells like crisp sheets on an Italian vacation by the sea.

Dries van Noten Silk Malaquais A beautiful bottle that smells like tart berries, and roses, and silk what I imagine summers in Sweden smell like. Like what Midsommer smelled like before the cult started killing people. This is a big one among fashionable men on TikTok.

Celine Parade I get so many compliments on this. It smells bright, and French, and elegant.

Le Labo Bergamot 22 My most worn, most loved, most rebought fragrance

Byredo Bal D’Afrique This unfortunately only lasts about 2 hours on me but it does smell lovely.

✅ EXTREMELY HELPFUL TIP OF THE WEEK

What to do if you get sunburnt:

• Take a cool shower or if you can’t, use a cool compress for 10-15 minutes. Don’t ice it.

• If you have black tea, brew 3-4 tea bags, cool it and apply a cool tea compress or take a lukewarm bath and drop some tea bags in there. The tannins will help with inflammation and will make you less red.

• While your skin is damp, apply aloe, or fragrance free moisturizer with aloe or soy. Once the burn stops feeling hot, slather on Cicaplast Baume. Apply moisturizer every few hours or when it starts to feel tight.

• Take ibuprofen. If its itchy, take an anti-histamine

• Drink tons of water. Stay out of the sun.

• You should start feeling and looking better within a few hours but it’ll take about 2-3 days to go away completely.

The World Cup final is on the 19th, and these 2 people will be playing each other.

If you don’t have anyone to watch with, Trevor Noah and his friends are providing a live second-screen experience, which is probably better than sitting alone and pretending you understand stoppage time and offsides.

Married at First Sight S20 (Peacock)

With Love Island over, I’m asking everyone to head directly to this arranged-marriage experiment. People looking for their perfect match marry a stranger selected for them by experts, then attempt to build a domestic life with someone whose last name they learned moments before the ceremony. I’m on record saying the Australian version is my favorite, and they’ve imported some of those Aussie twists, so I’m heaps excited. This is made by the same company behind Love Is Blind and The Ultimatum, and it’s the first season produced for Peacock rather than Lifetime, which means there is every reason to expect more mess.

The Real Wolf of a Wall Street (Netflix)

This is the story we saw in the movie, now told by Jordan Belfort’s wife, the brokers who worked for him, and the people who were betrayed by him. The thing about devils, psychopaths and con men is that, by almost every account, they’re incredibly charming. Nobody hands over their life savings to someone who’s bad at conversation.

Big Brother (CBS/Paramount)

Imagine Love Island without the mandate to hook up, Survivor without the deprivation and The Traitors without the murder mystery. Big Brother helped create the blueprint for all three. It has the surveillance atmosphere of 1984 or Soviet Russia, but camp! There’s already been a velociraptor, and a volcano, and some seasons there’s a robot named Zingbot whose sole purpose is to roast the contestants, which is more than the KGB ever managed. There’s also an extremely passionate fan community waiting to become your next source of online discourse. Survivor fans also get Rick Devens and Dee this season.

I’ve seen a sudden influx of explainers and beginner’s guides for the show using much the same language, which means people are being paid to post. Remember: your feed is fake. But ratings were reportedly up, so it’s working, and Love Island viewers appear to be giving it a chance. We’ll see how they respond to corny games without the dry jumping and mouth noises.

The pro move is watching the 24/7 live feeds, or more realistically, following the fans who recap everything that happens outside the edited episodes. The season has only just started, so you still have time to surrender the rest of your summer.

Young Farts Trailer Parts (Amazon)

This has the spirit of early-2000s MTV shows like Jackass, Rob & Big and Wildboyz. It’s an unscripted, Duck Dynasty-style family occu-soap about two brothers who own a trailer-parts business and make social content, along with the rest of their family, who work at the shop when they aren’t running a haunted house. Ostensibly, they salvage old RVs for parts. Mostly, they seem to f*ck around and blow things up. It’s executive produced by Jacob Tierney from Shoresy and Heated Rivalry, which explains why everyone seems ridiculous but also lovable.

The Ultimatum (Netflix)

Couples at a crossroads are separated because one person wants to get married and the other one does not. They then date the other couples, move in together for a “trial marriage,” and ultimately decide whether to marry their original partner or break up forever. This season has some genuine weirdos with a lot to unpack, and the trial marriages appear to be doing exactly what trial marriages are designed to do: expose several new and much worse problems.

Project Runway (Freeform/Hulu)
OK, hear me out, because this may get too inside baseball.

Fashion competition shows are about taste and execution, and these designers need either more money for materials, more time to make the clothes, or preferably both. This is why Drag Race queens bring expensive custom garments from home. The televised sewing challenges couldn’t compete with professionally made costumes that had taken weeks to construct. But more time to sew means more shoot days. More shoot days make the show more expensive. More expensive shows need more viewers. So, essentially, we get the clothes we deserve. To summarize: more people need to watch Project Runway so the designers can receive the resources required to produce actual runway-level garments. I do, however, like the overall Drag Race-ification of this reboot.

The Man Will Burn (HBOMax)

This documentary crew had unprecedented access to the Burning Man project for 5 years. There’s only been one episode so maybe they’ll get deeper later but so far we hear about some of the interesting builds, how it started, and how it made the decision whether or not to have Burning Man in 2021, really annoying Elon Musk’s brother in the process.

5 Star Weekend (Peacock)

Jennifer Garner plays a recently widowed food influencer who invites four of her closest friends to Nantucket for the weekend. Each woman arrives quietly dealing with her own crisis, everyone has a secret, and naturally all of it collides before they can finish the crudités. There’s also enough beautiful food footage to make you think you should bake something and invite your own friends over, which could be dangerous depending on how many secrets they’re carrying or how bad you are at baking.

Ride or Die (Amazon)

Two best friends believe they know everything about each other until one discovers the other is secretly an international assassin. The non-assassin is an MP’s wife who’s terrible at parking but very good at vintage shopping, which is the role I was born to play. When a hit goes wrong, they end up on the run together, and the whole thing is a very fun watch.

All American (CW/Netflix)

Warner Bros. invited me to the premiere of the final season after hearing me talk about how much I love this show about two rival Los Angeles high-school football teams and their dreams of playing Division I football. Before the screening, showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll said that her own son’s athletic journey had inspired many of the stories in the series, and that this fall he will head off to play Division I basketball. After eight seasons of writing about young people believing they could do something difficult and then putting in the work to make it happen, her own family had lived a version of that story. Maybe the best thing a show can do isn’t entertain you. Maybe the best thing a show can do is make you believe in dreams. And this show does.

Hawk (Netflix)

Will Ferrell plays Hawk, a professional golfer who lip-syncs “The Thong Song.” Molly Shannon plays his ex-wife, and the movie was co-written by Harper Steele, who you may remember from the documentary Will & Harper. I should warn you that the theme song will not leave your brain. I’ve been singing it all day replacing it with lyrics about my dog.

Hot Ones: Extra Hot (Netflix)
Will Ferrell manages to keep answering questions even while you can see his internal organs begging him to stop. Pitch: a talk show featuring tainted lettuce. Answer the question or take another bite of salad. Disclose your secrets or face explosive diarrhea. Live Más.

Lucky (Apple)

Anya Taylor-Joy plays a nepo-baby thief who botches a multimillion-dollar job and ends up on the run from Annette Bening, the mob and the FBI. Sometimes the most useful thing inherited wealth can buy is a good escape jacket.

Dark Winds S4 (Netflix)

I recommended this when it was hiding on AMC+, but now it’s on Netflix, so there’s no excuse. It follows Navajo reservation police solving crimes in the 1970s, with a little mysticism, a little mystery and a little George R.R. Martin magic. This season deals with ghost sickness, the belief that a lingering spirit can attach itself to the living. It’s a haunting metaphor for grief and guilt, and one of the reasons this show always feels interested in something larger than simply solving the case.

Little House in the Prairie (Netflix)

This adaptation complicates the original television series by including the Osage people whose prairie land the Ingalls family and other settlers were occupying illegally. The old show turned Pa into a near-perfect hero. In the books, he’s much closer to an optimistic screw-up who repeatedly leads his family into situations without anything resembling a complete plan. This version walks the line between the two. If you’ve read Yesteryear, it’s worth remembering that this is essentially the era of trad-wife life the character was fantasizing about. I would have lasted approximately ten minutes.

FINALES

In The City Not enough has been said about the side effects of the fibermaxxing trend. Thankfully our reality workhorse Kyle is here to shed light on literally ripping your *sshole open from taking too much fiber. Excited for the reunion. Sad it’s in the clubhouse.

Star City This show is good. Who knew it would end up being a love story?

Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed Stephen King loves it.

STILL WATCHING

House of The Dragon Why do so many royal castles have pest control problems? Remember in The Crown when the mouse ran across the room in Buckingham Palace?

Cape Fear This dumbass family continues to walk directly into Javier Bardem’s traps and make one catastrophic mistake after another. If several drowned skunks appeared in my swimming pool, the house would already be listed on Zillow.

Silo So perhaps the silo isn’t a post-apocalyptic shelter designed to preserve humanity. Perhaps it’s an elaborate experiment in social control, memory alteration and seeing how long Common can continue sounding like he’s from Chicago after the end of civilization.

Love Island UK Despite injuring myself while watching this on the treadmill I love the way this version of the show is playing out.

NextGen NYC Streetwear! Crypto! Prediction markets! Lambos! Skincare routines! Influencer led CPG brands! Not knowing any cultural references! They’re playing all the Gen Z hits.

RHOC Shannon doing anything is just pure physical comedy.

RHOA These women give the best lines in the franchise: “New levels, new devils,” “Can you imagine being drained of all of your bad bitch minerals”

Below Deck Med (Peacock/Bravo) The second stew is genuinely excellent at tablescapes and games. Spin-off idea: Below Deck: Joe Bradley. Joe Bradley is the captain. Joe Bradley from Southern Hospitality runs the interior. Every deckhand and stew is also, somehow, named Joe Bradley.

Side note: Have you noticed that every aftershow has now been renamed a “podcast”? They don’t even need to pretend anymore with the podcast microphones. We’ve officially dropped the idea that podcasts are an audio format.

One last television note: much has been written about the Emmy snubs, including Industry and Task, but I haven’t heard enough about this surprise: With Love, Meghan, my favorite royal cooking-and-crafting show, was nominated for Outstanding Lifestyle Program at the Daytime Emmys. She will face off with the Wizard of Paws.

I still have dehydrated citrus I made after watching it. Every time I put a slice into iced tea or use one to add some extra gift-wrapping pizazz, I think of this show. Which may be the truest measure of lifestyle television: did it successfully alter your actual lifestyle?

The Odyssey Honestly, this is the only thing that matters. We have officially entered The Odyssey weekend, so go see it on the biggest screen you can find and let Hollywood remind you what all that money is for.

The Invite Written by Rashida Jones, and directed by Olivia Wilde with Seth Rogan, Penelope Cruz and Edward Norton. It’s really, really funny and the conversations they have will have you talking long after the movie is over. Esther Perel was a consultant so be prepared to rethink your relationships. I don’t want to tell you too much, just go.

Heartstopper Forever (Netflix)

A romantic special for everyone who isn’t ready to say goodbye yet. Sometimes you don’t need another season. You just need two hours to make sure everybody is going to be OK.

Bang My Box (HBOMax)

Robin Byrd was an innovator of New York public-access television, a sex educator, an AIDS activist, and ahead of the curve on both curtain bangs and white nails. Now, at 70, she looks back on her legacy, begins the process of archiving decades of shows, and cares for her husband of 50 years. Sarah Jessica Parker is an executive producer, which makes perfect sense because this is also a story about New York, sex, reinvention and a woman who created her own version of television before anyone knew what to call it.

So Debbie decides to finally take her own advice, and things get very, very dark. It’s from the author of The Housemaid, and reminder that Freida’s day job is being a brain scientist. Meanwhile, I’m late on this newsletter.

Nebraska by Monica Datta

One of the fun things about working in Hollywood is that you come into contact with all sorts of people, and there are these random stretches of downtime when everyone is waiting for something and you end up talking about books, or sports, or random things. Someone on set recommended this to me during one of those moments, and they were so right. A woman is released from prison and vanishes before her family can even pick her up, and that’s only the beginning. And there’s a good pay-off at the end. This is going to be on a lot of year end Best of lists.

NON FICTION

Sex Diaries by Alyssa Shelasky

Alyssa Shelasky has spent years editing New York magazine’s anonymous sex diaries, which means she has probably read more about what people are actually doing in their relationships than most therapists. This book pulls back the curtain on the column and the people behind it, using their stories to look at sex, marriage, loneliness, secrecy, desire, and the enormous gap between how people present their lives and what is really going on inside them. Essentially, it’s cultural anthropology with gossip.

Dogs, Boys, and Other Things I’ve Cried About by Isabel Klee
Isabel Klee is the woman behind @SimonSits, the Instagram/TikTok account where she fosters hard-case rescue dogs and posts their transformations, which has grown to over 2 million followers. She became a genuine internet phenomenon fostering Tiki, a dog so shut down by trauma he wouldn’t engage with anyone, and watching him slowly come back to life became an internet obsession. Her memoir follows her twenties in New York, a series of not-quite-right boyfriends, and the dogs who got her through all of it. It debuted at number one on the New York Times bestseller list and is already being developed for television, so read it now and you can later explain that you knew about it before it became Sex and the City, but with rescue dogs. In all honesty, I still think about Tiki.

If you’ve been feeling vaguely unsettled by AI but haven’t been able to articulate why, listen to this. Journalist Evan Ratliff cloned his own voice, let it answer his phone, talk to his friends and coworkers, and slowly started outsourcing pieces of his own life to a computer. It starts out feeling like a fun experiment and ends up asking some genuinely unnerving questions about identity, trust, and what happens when technology gets just a little too good at pretending to be us.

This is the Legally Blonde prequel EP’d by Reese Witherspoon. It’s clear Amazon is tripling down on YA content and this is exactly that: pink, fluffy, melts like cotton candy in the Seattle rain–which is where Elle Woods has been transplanted to after her father botched a nose job on a celebrity

Worst Neighbor Ever (Netflix)

Neighbors on HBO was about petty, funny, disputes and passive aggression. This is neighbors who kill.

Abandoned (Disney+)

In 1984, three children were abandoned at a French train station. Decades later they set out to discover who they are, who their parents were, and why they were left behind. Their search leads them to a network of amateur investigators and a mystery that may involve international criminals. It probably could have lost an episode or two, but I was invested in the cranky brother.

Silo S3 (Apple)

This season we finally get the answer to the question the show’s been asking from the beginning: What happened to destroy the world and why was the silo built in the first place? But first she has to do one thing: remember.

The Other Bennet Sister (BritBox)

I’m bringing this back up because I know nobody watched it the first time I mentioned it because it’s on Britbox. But maybe this is the weekend to dig into ye’ old brit box and find all the magic inside. Like this show, Blue Lights, and In the Line of Duty. They’re all SO GOOD.

Villain teen and Javier Bardem are getting scarier every episode. He’s cruel and out for suffering, and she’s just rabid.

The look of this show is making me fear that my carefully curated capsule wardrobe is actually depressing.

I feel bad for all the dragons. And Helena. They just want to have chickens and eat sheep and not get involved in dumb human drama over a big uncomfortable metal chair.

Real Housewives of Atlanta

These women could not be funnier, and now they’re in Scotland with the one Black Scot they found on Tik Tok.

Below Deck

This flavor of drunk man is the worst because they just won’t. stop. talking.

Love Island USA

Trinity is a star. She and Bryce will win this season. The producers’ only job now is making the foregone conclusion feel less foregone. “Still you rise, I guess” was the funniest line of tv all week.

Love Island UK

Movie Night and Casa Amor take an old concept (Temptation Island bonfires where couples watched their partners hook up in the other villa) and rebrands it as just one dramatic twist within a larger show full of twists–like a Russian nesting doll of dating show tropes—and that’s why we love Love Island.

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come (Hulu)

Moments after surviving the first movie, Grace is not getting away that easy. Now four more Satan worshipping families want a piece of her.

How to Make a Killing (Netflix)

Glen Powell is infinitely watchable as he kills his way through a list of relatives to get to his trust fund.

Enola Holmes 3 (Netflix)

I have never seen one of these movies before. Luckily this one opens with a helpful recap of everything you need to know. Enola is Sherlock Holmes’ little sister and a detective in her own right, and in this installment her brother, played by Superman’s Henry Cavill, goes missing the morning of her wedding

But if you want an unhinged holiday weekend, Netflix added Gone Girl and all four Hunger Games. Catch up before the next Hunger Games prequel comes out this fall.

It Could Have Been Her by Lisa Jewell

If your algorithm has suddenly become nothing but women saying, “I stayed up until 3 a.m. because of this book,” this is why. The latest Book Tok obsession, a woman finds a stray dog, tracks down its owner, and ends up back in a house she barely escaped 25 years ago. Lisa Jewell remains one of the best in the business at making ordinary suburban life feel deeply, deeply unsafe. (Before you ask: nothing bad happens to the dog.)

🎧 PODCASTS WORTH HEARING

Money Trauma
Start with the episode featuring Iris Brilliant, a wealth redistribution coach who used to be rich herself and rethought everything after her brother died young. Yes, it’s a financial podcast but It deals with the actual psychology of why we hoard, spend, and panic about money, and treats rich people and broke people with the same curiosity instead of picking a villain.

📱RABBIT HOLES

THE meme of the week was the pointing WNBA player Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark got hit with a technical foul following an altercation with Phoenix Mercury’s DeWanna Bonner. Fever teammate, Sophie Cunningham, walked over to ask the ref why Bonner hadn’t also gotten a technical, and started pointing at her mid-argument. Bonner snapped, “Don’t you point at me!”, which of course meant Cunningham didn’t stop, silently pointing at her for a full 22 seconds while trailing her around the court. And it’s a small, small world: Cunningham co-hosts a podcast, Show Me Something, with West Wilson, aka Summer House villain. They went to high school together. The world is folding in on itself.

TIK TALK

My favorite new show is TikToks from the high schoolers going to Vogue Summer School. The first session had about 400 students and 100 of them were kicked out. Lock your focus by tapping and holding the screen until “AE/AF Lock” appears at the top, so your camera stops trying to refocus on the dark sky or smoke.

Star City (Apple)

A movie I think about a fair amount is The Lives of Others, the 2006 movie about a member of the Stasi spying on a couple in East Berlin. This show reminds me of that movie even though it’s a spin off of For All Mankind, an alternate history of the space race told from the POV of the Soviet Union. You don’t need to have watched one second of that show though. You just need to like tension, secrecy, and a faded Soviet color palette.

The American Experiment (PBS)

In case you don’t know what to get America for her 250th birthday, Tom Hanks has made a documentary about the founding of the country with historians and politicians and Vice Presidents and all sorts of different voices. It’s perfect if you want the condensed version of Ken Burns’ The American Revolution on PBS. The finale is basically the non-musical version of the Alexander Hamilton story. You forget how poetic historians can be: “History is interred in the shallowest of graves.” Gorgeous.

Life, Larry, and the Pursuit of Unhappiness (HBOMax)

The Obamas took a different approach to America’s 250th birthday. They inserted Larry David into crucial moments in American history. It’s somehow comforting to know that Larry David would have found the Founding Fathers extremely annoying.

The Season (Hulu)

It’s White Lotus meets Crazy Rich Asians meets Below Deck. A young woman arrives in Hong Kong to work for a mega-rich family and enters a yacht-based ecosystem of affairs, broken hearts, deceit, and people who own boats too large to have morals. Anchors aweigh!

Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 (Netflix)

Obviously if you liked the animated show you’ve seen this already, along with 21 million other people already. For the uninitiated: the Last Airbender and his friends from the Water Tribe head into the Earth Kingdom to stop the Fire Nation. It’s geopolitics for elements with good action.

Wild Cherry (Paramount+)

Posh British mothers go on the attack after a teenage girl disappears, a streamer moves into the neighborhood, and they discover what their entrepreneurial daughters have been posting online

STILL WATCHING

Cape Fear Our villain teen is playing all the DeNiro Cape Fear greatest hits from finger in mouth to laughing in the movies. I hope we get to see her hanging under a car.

RHORI Reunion Part 1 was explosive, hall of fame worthy. This is what a reunion should be. Even Dave Portnoy is talking about how great this show is (compared to the Summer House reunion) and I salute him for making enough content for “Tea by the Sea” to make his ocean front beach house a business expense.

Chris and Martina: The Final Set (Netflix)

Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova look back on 50 years of rivalry, friendship, estrangement, reconciliation, and helping each other through cancer. It’s a sports documentary, a friendship documentary, and proof that your greatest rival may also be the only person who fully understands what your life cost you. Between this and the nun story above, it’s a big week for women who love/hate each other.

Little Brother (Netflix)

John Cena is a tightly wound real-estate magnate whose carefully constructed life is detonated when his chaotic former Little Brother mentee, played by Eric André, suddenly reappears. Dumb in a good way.

The Welcome Table (Netflix)

Since half the world is currently sitting beneath a heat dome, perhaps spend some time with the people for whom climate change is already the plot, not the forecast. This documentary tells the incredibly sad stories of people around the world whose homes, communities, and lives have been devastated by fires, floods, hurricanes, and rising temperatures. A sobering statistic: 1 out of every 3 people on the planet will lose their homes due to climate change

In Theaters

Jackass: Best and Last

Twenty-five years of friendship, concussions, and men discovering new ways to injure their genitals, assembled into one final goodbye. It is somehow disgusting and moving, which is also the entire Jackass legacy. I saw this this morning as the last thing I needed to do before writing this and I’m still thinking about these guys, the physical and other costs of being them, and how they were essentially the first star creators. Before youtube even existed they were making home movies and their “following” of skaters were sharing the videos on VHS via mail. VHS! MAIL! I guess it’s no surprise that one of the stunts in this movie is themed to a colonoscopy. Time comes for us all, even if you’re strapped to a big red rocket.

The Invite

Olivia Wilde and Seth Rogen play a married couple who invite their sexually adventurous neighbors, Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton, over for dinner. It begins with wine and ends with everyone saying the types of things a couples therapist would specifically instruct you to save for the session.

Foundling
In 1987, a newborn baby was discovered beside a remote country road in England. She was adopted, her biological mother was never found, and a girl who lived nearby never forgot the story. Almost 40 years later, that girl is now a journalist and goes looking for the baby, Jess, to help her uncover what really happened.

It begins as a genealogy mystery and develops into the kind of story where you will say, “No. Absolutely not,” aloud while driving.

📚BOOKS WORTH READING

The Bewitching by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

A reader recommended this and they were right. The story moves across three timelines: 1998, where Minerva is a graduate student in New England researching an obscure female horror writer from the 1930s; 1908, following Minerva’s grandmother Alba in rural Mexico; and 1934, from the perspective of that horror writer, Beatrice, who witnessed a mysterious disappearance at a women’s university. The witchcraft draws on Mexican folklore rather than the usual New England witch mythology, which makes it something different. It’s a national bestseller and a Bram Stoker Award finalist.

East of Eden by John Steinbeck

Netflix announced a seven-episode limited series written by Zoe Kazan, with Florence Pugh playing the antihero Cathy Ames. The book is close to 700 pages, which means now is exactly the right time to start.

It’s a retelling of Cain and Abel set across two California families in the Salinas Valley, from the Civil War to World War I, with twin brothers Cal and Aron mirroring that biblical rivalry: one complex and rebellious, one idealistic and pure. At the center of all of it is Cathy Ames, one of the great villains in American literature. She shoots her husband and abandons both sons before they’re old enough to know her, and returns to running a brothel. This adaptation centers the story on Cathy in a way the original film didn’t.

The Zoe Kazan connection is worth knowing: her grandfather Elia Kazan directed the 1955 film adaptation, which was the movie that made James Dean a star. The actress who played Cathy in that version won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for it.

It will make you think about loyalty, evil, family, and the inheritance of damage in ways you will not expect. Steinbeck considered it his most ambitious work. He was right.

2. Tap and hold a blank space on the screen until your apps start jiggling (edit mode).

As we make our way through summer, there will be less to recommend week to week, but I will always find you something. In the meantime, I read that people who spend two hours outdoors a week are healthier. That’s 17 minutes a day. You don’t have to frolic in a forest but go outside. Take a walk after dinner. Leave your phone at home. Commune with the world.

Then come back inside and watch television.

America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders (Netflix)
It has all the competition of sports, all the drama of a reality show, all the stakes of a talent competition. This season also has some real unexpected needledrop songs from The Chicks to Jesus Christ Superstar.

I Will Find You (Netflix)
Sam Worthington plays a man who spent five years in prison for killing his son, only for his ex-sister-in-law, played by Britt Lower from Severance, to show up with a photo that suggests the son may still be alive. It gets straight into it from the first minute, which I appreciate. No one has time for a slow-burn missing child conspiracy.

House of the Dragon Season 3 (HBOMax)
Back Sunday. I have not watched any of this season yet but I feel confident recommending it because the infamous “Dance of the Dragons” that happens this season was essentially spoiled in Game of Thrones when Joffrey takes his tour of the dragon skulls. By the way, in that same scene, he spoils what happens to Egg from Knight of the Seven Kingdoms when he grows up. I am cursed to retain useless information to the direct detriment of information relevant to my actual life. Don’t watch that link if you don’t want to know.

The Agency Season 2 (Paramount+)
Back for Season 2, and all 10 episodes drop Sunday. If you have not started this yet, now is a good time to catch up. Michael Fassbender, Jeffrey Wright, Jodie Turner-Smith, Katherine Waterston, Richard Gere, international espionage, emotional withholding, well-fitting clothes.

Next Gen NYC Season 2 (Bravo/Peacock)
The children of Bravo celebrities are back in New York City, where they will bravely attempt to build careers, maintain friendships, and start fights in restaurants.

The Bear (Hulu) Season 4

Stress, sandwiches, grief, yelling, Chicago, Jamie Lee Curtis, perfect needle drops, men in white T-shirts, and people saying “chef.” Still great.

Teach You a Lesson (Netflix)
A Korean drama about a government bureau that sends unconventional inspectors into schools where teacher authority has completely collapsed. They are authorized to use physical intervention and very unorthodox methods to restore order. It sounds unhinged and it is, slightly, but the action is good. If you liked Taxi Driver (the Korean one), same energy.

Grantchester Season 11. Final Season (PBS)
Eleven seasons in, Grantchester remains one of television’s great soft mysteries: murder, longing, bicycles, handsome vicars, emotionally repressed detectives, and the kind of English village where everyone looks like they own one good cardigan and three secrets.

Love It Or List It (HGTV/HBOMax+)
The perfect background show. Homeowners are visited by two experts, one presents a renovation plan for their current house, one shows them what they could buy and move to instead. Then they decide. It is simple. It is addictive. It has been on for fifteen seasons because the premise is undefeatable.

NOW, DOCS

All week people have been asking about Maternal Instinct (Netflix), which I recommended last week and which is now #1. Watch it. And while you’re at it watch The Crash.

Big Girls Wanted: Escaping Pearadise (HBOMax)
No gruesome murder. Just a creepy man possibly running a cult of plus-size women. There’s a good hot mic moment at the end.

Cape Fear (Apple TV+)
I love that Apple has decided to give us one of these 90s thriller reboots every summer. Last summer was Presumed Innocent, now Cape Fear. I hope they do Primal Fear next. Or Fatal Attraction. Anyway, there’s a great surprise cameo.

Love Island USA (Peacock)
The best thing coming out of this season are the Corbin impressions. Can I get a kiss?

Love Island UK (Hulu)
Meanwhile, over in UK Love Island, Jasmine might dismantle the entire system from inside the villa. Can the show survive her? I don’t know but I need to find out.

The toys aren’t just fighting to be played with this time, they’re fighting for the concept of physical play itself. Bonnie has received a smart tablet named Lilypad, and Woody, Buzz, Jessie and the rest of the gang have to go head to head with it. It’s a Pixar movie about the attention economy, which sounds like a lot, but Pixar has always done this, made something for the kids on the surface and for adults underneath. You’re going to cry.

Voicemails for Isabelle (Netflix)

A completely word-of-mouth phenomenon that has been building for years and is now everywhere. An eight-volume series set in 1883 London, following the incorrigible Emma M. This is the book equivalent of a show you discover and consume in one weekend and then tell everyone you know about.

Stoner by John Williams
You know who has genuinely good book recommendations and gets almost no credit for it? Comedian Anthony Jeselnik. He’s been doing weekly book recs under #NewBookTuesday for years and recently launched a more formal monthly book club specifically to get more people (and more men) reading fiction. His current pick is Stoner, which he calls his most consistently successful recommendation of all time and possibly the Great American Novel. Not no.

THE WORLD CUP The US and Mexico are both officially advancing. Merlin the good luck duck and the dressed-up Baby Jesus delivered.

I cannot stop watching the content around this tournament. Lawrence, Kansas embracing Team Algeria. St. Louis welcoming Team Bosnia. This Bosnian song about disillusionment with the American dream has become a World Cup banger. Scots taking over Boston and trying out the viral cop slide. European minds being blown by football stadiums. The entire Azteca stadium in Mexico singing a Nigerian song. I cry watching these every single day.

Now let’s talk World Cup fashion, because we have to. The French team has a French designer handbag collection that could win a cup on its own. The team from Congo arrived wearing matching leopard like fashion warriors. The Haitian team, who you may remember had incredible Olympic uniforms, delivered again. And Team Spain in head-to-toe in Loewe. Fabulous.

F1 As I’ve mentioned here before, I love the show Drive to Survive so I’ve come to love F1. Lewis Hamilton won the Spanish Grand Prix for Ferrari, ending a 686-day victory drought and claiming his first win in Ferrari red. At 41, it makes him the oldest Grand Prix winner since Jack Brabham in 1970. During his rough first season with Ferrari, Hamilton admitted he began wondering “maybe it is true that when you get to a certain point, you lose it.” He has not lost it.

TENNIS Serena and Venus Williams will play doubles at Wimbledon.

Dynamic pricing is real and it is being used on you. Everywhere.

If you haven’t heard: prices now change depending on who you are, where you are, and how many times you’ve searched for something. It is likely cheaper to buy airline tickets or groceries from another country, or a public library computer than from your home, even in incognito mode.

And according to a 2025 study which analyzed prices across 40 retailers every four hours for over a month, the least expensive day to shop online is Tuesday. The most expensive is Friday, with Saturday close behind. Retailers drop prices at the start of the week when demand is low and raise them as the weekend approaches.

So, in summary, shop on Tuesday. If you open Uber, open Lyft too, they’ll drop their prices. Ideally, shop from a public computer, or use a VPN, or hide somehow.

Also: This may be obvious to some of you, but I had no idea until recently that you can reach out to your local congressional representative to help you navigate government agencies. After five years of me trying to sort out a 2021 tax return that never arrived, their office solved it in a little over a month. Your representative isn’t just a name on a yard sign you see only in election season. They have contact forms on their websites. Use them!

My 2 favorite recent watches are ending the same week. This is the real horror.

Summer House

In the final part of the reunion we learned we’re getting a surprise Part 4 featuring one-on-one sit-downs. Why? My guess: because the cast is supposed to start filming again and the vibes are currently radioactive. Summer House traditionally begins with July 4th weekend. If everyone walks into that house feeling the way they felt at the reunion, there won’t be a season. There will be a hostage situation.

So, now the show has to perform emergency surgery. Somebody has to apologize. Somebody has to cry. Somebody has to begin a redemption arc. And because television is built on the backs of a few reliable workhorses, Kyle and Lindsay have once again been called into service because of Amanda and West’s pitiful, pilled-out performance on the reunion.

And while we’re here, let me offer what may be the coldest take in television commentary. I have known Wests. A West is someone who falls in love with unavailable people without realizing that the unavailability is the attraction. The yearning becomes the relationship. The secrecy becomes the chemistry. The obstacle becomes proof that it’s real.

Because wanting someone feels so powerful, they mistake the wanting for love. Then the minute that person becomes available, “the magic disappears”. Not because the other person changed. Because the obstacle was what made the relationship. The relationship wasn’t built on compatibility. It was built on pursuit.

Meanwhile someone has blown up a relationship, a marriage, or an entire life based on feelings that were only sustainable at a distance. Watch out for Wests. They’re everywhere.

One of the ideas from Atomic Habits is habit stacking, pairing something you enjoy with something you don’t. Instead of relying on willpower, you make the reward and the habit happen at the same time.

Love Island is perfect for this because it’s on six nights a week.

This summer, make yourself one rule: You can only watch Love Island while walking. Treadmill. Walking pad. Neighborhood walk. Whatever.

A typical episode is about 13 thousand steps. By the end of the season you’ll have logged thousands of steps without really thinking about it.

You’ll be healthier. You’ll understand all the memes. And you’ll have strong opinions about people you’ve never met.

If Love Island isn’t your thing, use Dateline. Or Survivor. Or Real Housewives. Or whatever show you love that has a million episodes.

The point isn’t Love Island. The point is outsourcing your self-discipline to television.

If you’ve read Say Nothing or Empire of Pain you already know you are buying this. If you haven’t, the short version is that Keefe is one of the best nonfiction writers working and this is his new book. It follows the mysterious 2019 death of nineteen-year-old Zac Brettler, who jumped from a balcony into the Thames in the middle of the night and the investigation that revealed he had been living a secret life posing as the son of a Russian oligarch inside London’s dirty-money underworld. A family portrait and a thriller and an indictment of an entire city, all at once. Currently number one on many charts and #2 on Amazon’s Best Books of the Year so far.

Ooh guess what? That Tom Hanks WW2 doc series I mentioned last week is also a podcast. Nothing says summer like a 20 part war documentary.

One of my favorite things is learning how things work. Restaurants. Television shows. Theme parks. Political campaigns. Why Costco is laid out the way it is. Switched on Pop does that, but for music. Every episode breaks down the hidden choices behind the songs you can’t stop listening to. Why a chorus works. Why a melody gets stuck in your head. The New York Knicks came back from 29 points down to beat the San Antonio Spurs 107-106 on Wednesday night, completing the largest comeback in NBA Finals history and moving to within one win of their first championship since 1973. OG Anunoby tipped in the miss of Jalen Brunson’s long three-pointer with 1.2 seconds remaining. They can win it all on Saturday in San Antonio.

🎵 MUSIC NOTES

There is no sound if the 2020s yet A fascinating article has been making the rounds arguing that there is no defining sound of the 2020s. Not yet, anyway. The theory is that streaming, algorithms, TikTok, endless niche communities, and infinite choice have fractured music into a thousand micro-scenes instead of creating one dominant cultural sound. Think about it.

The 50s had rock and roll.
The 60s had Motown and psychedelic rock.
The 70s had disco.
The 80s had synth-pop.
The 90s had grunge.
The 2000s had indie sleaze and hip-hop.
The 2010s had EDM drops, trap beats, and whatever was happening to Mumford & Sons.

But if someone asked you what the 2020s sound like? I don't know that there is an answer. Maybe it's because we're all listening to different things. Maybe it's because culture moves too fast now. Either way, it’s an interesting question.

In 1992 a woman was stabbed to death in front of her 2 year old son. Netflix released both a documentary and a scripted adaptation examining the crime, and the disastrous police investigation that followed before the real killer was finally identified over a decade later.

The hot vampire from Interview with the Vampire becomes a rock star. Imagine Jim Morrison with immortality, better cheekbones, and significantly more emotional damage.

Not new, but new to Hulu. Nicola Walker, who is in all my favorite British shows, plays a divorce lawyer at her family’s firm who is simultaneously going through her own divorce. Deeply my thing.

I don’t know how I missed this when it came out in 2021 but this show created and starring Stephen Coletti from Laguna Beach and One Tree Hill is about 2 washed up hunks formerly of a CW-like Vampire show and their lives now, years after the show ended.

Widow’s Bay is so good. A cursed New England island, a horror-comedy tone that actually works, Matthew Rhys as a mayor who is trying his best and failing constantly. Two episodes left. We should all be watching and we should all be talking about it.

Summer House Reunion & In the City The editors did excellent work this week juxtaposing what Amanda was saying on camera during filming versus once the West allegations came out. Bravo is known for having an exacting notes process and executives who take things very seriously, and you can tell. Bravo shows are, across the board, the best in class at this. It is not an accident.

RHORI In unsurprising news, Liz, who we watch this week act like she is Scarface, might be a real life drug kingpin. She and Dino were essentially running the plot of Ozark. She fronted the money for tons of cocaine and they split the profits. All while her husband was gone for months at a time “deep sea fishing.”

Brett Goldstein, forever Roy Kent to me, plays a lawyer working for Jennifer Lopez’s powerful CEO. Betty Gilpin plays the assistant who immediately realizes what’s happening, while Tony Hale gets stuck as the HR executive tasked with cleaning up the mess. It’s funny and cute.

Hoppers (Disney)

An animal-loving college student transfers her mind into a robotic beaver to communicate with animals. Is this a kids movie? Yes. Am I still recommending it? Also yes.

Serena Williams is coming back to tennis.

You have to love Maja Chwalińska. The Polish player had to win three qualifying matches just to get into the French Open draw, made it all the way to the women’s final (tomorrow, 9 a.m., TNT/Max), and has been openly worried about paying her hotel bill because she was not planning to still be in Paris. Tournaments don’t pay out until it’s over, so a Polish sponsor has stepped in. She is playing in a Grand Slam final and stressing about her hotel bill. Most relatable thing to ever happen in professional sports.

NBA

The New York Knicks are in the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999. The Spurs are full of young players like Victor Wembanyama, the 7’4’’ French 22 year old and the Knicks are…not that. Game 3 at Madison Square Garden is happening Monday.

The greatest subplot of this entire run is watching Knicks fan culture ascend to its deserved level of cultural dominance in real time. These people are unhinged in the best possible way.

Case in point: Elmo posted on X wishing both teams “fun” before Game 1, and Knicks fans descended on his mentions like he had personally betrayed the city. “These streets ain’t Sesame,” one person wrote. “This isn’t the time for sportsmanship, Elmo.” Wendy’s replied “NOT NOW ELMO.” The Spurs then posted a photo of an Elmo plush toy in a Spurs shirt. Elmo subsequently issued a correction: “KNICKS that last message! Elmo didn’t mean to SPUR you on!” This is the greatest sports story of the year.

The Carolina Hurricanes overcame a two-goal deficit to beat the Vegas Golden Knights in overtime, tying the Stanley Cup Finals at 1-1. Game 3 is Saturday @8

But the Stanley Pup is also happening. Each NHL team has a dog for rescue and they all vaguely look like they were hockey players who were magically transformed into dogs

Technically not a sport, but we have a new National Spelling Bee champion. Fourteen-year-old Shrey Parikh from Rancho Cucamonga, California won after a 90-second lightning-round spell-off tiebreaker in which he correctly spelled 32 words to his opponent’s 25, a new record. A key ingredient to summer is having a properly stocked beverage pantry. Don’t be caught unaware when 4.45pm hits and you only have a lukewarm LaCroix to open.

Rose all Day: You actually need a variety of Rose to fully embrace summer vibes. Everyone thinks the palest of the Provencals are the way to go, and they’re classic for a reason: BUT, there’s something so sexy about a darker, rustic rose with barbeque and burgers. Venture outside of the south of France, as every region has a nice rose for you. I love this one from the Basque country of Spain.

Lean and Green Whites should fill racks in your fridge. Get a vinho verde from Spain or Portugal for the best zip, or a frosty high altitude Pinot Bianco. Basically, if you can’t physically be on the coast, drink wine from A coast. Any coast really! The seaside of Italy, Greece or anywhere will do. If you’d rather be hiking in the Alps, get a great bottle of mountain wine from the Alto Adige or Switzerland (they’ve gotten really good in recent years!).

It’s ubiquitous for a reason: Sancerre. Almost any Sancerre can scratch the itch of wishing you were sitting at a bistro table in a small town in the south of France. And you pay a premium for the name, but there is something special about this site in the Loire with limestone and flint soils that gives the wines a nice backbone. It’s light, it’s lithe, it’s chic.

If you must red, chill it down and drink it out of a water glass. Don’t overthink it. I keep this on hand and always get raves.

3 Minute Summer Cocktails: You can’t solely rely on wine to achieve peak vibes. Summers are for shandys, so keep a wheat beer and lemonade on hand. Throw a dash of Angostura bitters on top and you are elevated. I also love a White Vermouth over ice with a splash of soda water and an olive. Something I’m bringing back this summer is the wine spritz. Take a basic nice wine, add a big ice cube (**) and some sparkling water and you can start drinking at noon.

The friends (Fey, Will Forte, Colman Domingo, Kerri Kenney-Silver) are still going on vacation together, even in the aftermath of losing Steve Carrell. Expect laughs. Expect tears. Expect both at the same time.

Deli Boys S2 (Hulu)

I am once again asking you to watch Deli Boys. It’s about two deeply unqualified brothers who discover their father was secretly running a criminal empire and now have to take over. Think The Sopranos if everyone involved was wildly underprepared. Season 2 has Fred Armisen, Andrew Rannells and Kumail Nanjiani. What’s not to like?

The Yogurt Shop Murders (HBOMax)

The documentary from last summer covered the 1991 murders of four teenage girls at an Austin yogurt shop. Four men were convicted, their convictions overturned, and just this week those men were awarded $35 million from the city of Austin. But something else crazy happened, 4 months after the original episodes aired, DNA linked the case to a known serial killer so they came back and made a new episode walking through how it was solved.

The Boroughs (Netflix)

If you liked Stranger Things but wished the kids were septuagenarians. Alfred Molina moves into a retirement community in the New Mexico desert where he was supposed to live with his recently deceased wife. He falls in with a group of neighbors like Bill Pullman, Geena Davis, and Alfre Woodard and everything is lovely until the creepy monsters start stealing people’s lifeforce. Produced by the Duffer Brothers. Creature effects by ILM. Giant heart.

Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed (Apple)

Apple TV loves suburban people in danger. This is a divorced woman trying to win back custody of her kid who gets embroiled in a sex/murder/blackmail scheme. Luckily she works as a fact checker (does this job even exist anymore?) so she launches her own investigation

Spider-Noir (Prime Video)

Nicolas Cage plays a middle-aged Spider-Man operating as a hardboiled detective in 1930s Manhattan, and you can watch the whole thing in either black and white or a heightened Technicolor color mode. It’s fun in the way that Dick Tracy and The Rocketeer were fun, which is a vibe I did not know I was missing.

Calabasas Confidential (Netflix)

Imagine Laguna Beach, but everyone has a content strategy. If you’ve ever had the experience of going back to your childhood home and regressing to an earlier, worse version of yourself, or have wondered what it’s like to grow up a rich kid in LA, this is for you. You can kind of see them getting their sea legs and looking to their producers, but Dylan is a reality show unicorn. A hot, rich kid cowboy f*ckboy. One thing these kids get right: if I lived like this I wouldn’t leave my parents house in Calabasas either. For you Bravo watchers, there is a Brandi Glanville moment where she talks to her son and his friend about how she knew he wasn’t a virgin anymore and Larsa’s son talking about how her being in the spotlight and dating affects him.

A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder (Netflix)

The based-on-a-novel series about a teen true-crime obsessive who can’t stop inserting herself into active murder investigations is back. The first season was a lot of fun, this one picks right up.

As everyone has heard by now, Survivor’s live finale included an on-air flub from Jeff Probst that gave away a big spoiler. And THIS IS WHY I will use this moment to once again pitch the Television Academy, via this newsletter and by any other means available to me, that the hosting Emmy categories need to be split into LIVE and TAPED. They’re just different jobs. Live hosting is HARD and requires you to be an air traffic controller, while taped hosting is about personality, and how you impact the overall vibe of the show. 🎬 MOVIES WORTH SEEING

Obsession

This is the movie everyone is talking about. A lonely guy uses a supernatural toy to make his childhood crush fall in love with him. Things go badly. Then worse. Then much, much worse. On paper, it sounds like a goofy horror premise. In practice, it’s one of the smartest horror movies I’ve seen in years. Beneath all the blood and screaming, it’s really about entitlement, obsession, and the difference between wanting someone and wanting to possess them. It’s currently the best-reviewed wide-release movie of the year and has already made $82 million at the box office.

Backrooms

For those of us who didn’t spend the pandemic watching internet horror videos, The Backrooms started with a single image posted online in 2019. It showed an empty office space with yellow walls, stained carpet, fluorescent lighting, and the overwhelming feeling that something was wrong. The caption suggested that if you accidentally “noclip” out of reality, like a video game character passing through a wall, you end up here: an endless maze of abandoned rooms stretching for hundreds of millions of square miles.

The internet then did what the internet does best and turned one creepy image into an entire mythology. People created maps, monsters, levels, rules, survival guides, and thousands of videos expanding the lore. Some levels look like abandoned malls. Others resemble infinite hotel hallways, empty schools, office buildings, suburban neighborhoods, arcades, swimming pools, or airports. Every area feels familiar enough to recognize but wrong enough to make your skin crawl.

Part of why it works is that almost everyone has experienced a Backrooms moment in real life. Walking through a deserted office on a weekend. Getting lost in the hallway of a hotel. Finding yourself alone in a mall after closing. Being in a place designed for people and suddenly realizing there aren’t any. It’s a very specific kind of existential dread.

They say every generation gets the horror movie it deserves. Apparently, for Gen Z it’s about being trapped forever in a depressing office building.

STREAMING

Office Romance (Netflix)

Brett Goldstein, Roy from Ted Lasso, wrote this movie specifically for Jennifer Lopez and said if she wouldn’t do it, it wouldn’t happen. That’s more romantic than most romantic comedies. Thankfully, the movie is charming too. Jennifer Lopez plays a high-powered executive who falls for a colleague played by Goldstein. If you like old-school movie star rom-coms, this delivers exactly what you want.

The Crash( Netflix)

3 young people crash into a wall at high speed. 2 die, and the driver lives. Was it a horrible accident or did she do it on purpose? I have to admit I decided she did it 2 minutes in but this has caused a lot of chatter online.

Send Help (Hulu)

Imagine if Rachel McAdams got stranded on an island with her terrible boss. Part survival thriller, part workplace revenge fantasy. So fun.

The AI Doc (Peacock)

This documentary sits in a fascinating place somewhere between a warning label and a recruitment video. And now, a tip for anyone who has ever wanted to sell a reality or unscripted TV show. Based on my DMs, that is a lot of you. Here’s a shortcut that isn’t “self-finance, post, and hope it goes viral.”

Universal Television has a lab where you can submit ideas directly. No agent required. No industry experience required. If you think you and your friends could be the next Mormon Wives, your family are the next McBees, or you have an original concept for a game show or the next Survivor, this is your window.

Real talk though: you will not get a “created by” credit, because those basically don’t exist in unscripted unless it’s a foreign format or grandfathered in like Simon Cowell. Universal will own it completely, produce it, and make all the real money. You could spend a year on it and it may never go anywhere. These are the very real and very sh*tty possibilities.

That said, by end of summer you could have a show in development at a major studio. By next year, your first EP credit and a new career in television. Submissions close June 14th. Good luck!

The Yellowstone sequel everybody is going to watch so you may as well do it too. Beth and Rip pack up their demons and their adopted son Carter and start over in South Texas, where they immediately make a powerful enemy: Annette Bening, a multi-generation rival rancher who runs her children like a corporation and has a lot of turquoise. Beth spends a lot of time in flannels and on horseback but when she digs a pair of Louboutins out of a packing box to go sell steaks to Dallas restaurants, it’s like a retired superhero getting back into her suit. Ed Harris is also here as a Vietnam vet veterinarian

Rivals S2 (Hulu)

British period drama set in the 1980s Cotswolds, where a media mogul and an ex-Olympian are locked in a war for control of a regional TV franchise. The sex, the shoulder pads, and the specific pleasure of watching extremely attractive people behave extremely badly in the extremely beautiful countryside is everything.

Off Campus (Amazon)

Hockey’s horny pop culture era continues. A music student/gym janitor/nerd catches a glimpse of a hockey jock in the shower, agrees to help him pass a class, and in return he’ll make the band guy fall in love with her. This is not new, but for those who prefer their romance with emotional devastation. Andrea Riseborough and Domhnall Gleeson play two people who spend fifteen years repeatedly finding and losing each other. It starts with home video footage of a Boxing Day party in early ‘90s California, and then Tom Hanks walks in, then Steve Martin, then Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara, and suddenly you understand that Martin Short has been the warm center of a very specific and very talented universe for a very long time. It’s a story about love, loss, and survival. Between the ages of 12 and 20, Short lost his father, his mother, and his brother. In February, after the documentary was finished, his daughter Katherine died by suicide at 42. He chose to release it anyway. His mantra: “98 percent of it is failure; nothing works and then something works.” Watch it.

The World Cup is coming but tickets are not selling.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off June 11, spread across 16 host cities in the US, Canada, and Mexico. It is the biggest tournament in the history of the sport. And unless you have significant disposable income, you probably can’t go. Four tickets to the final were listed at $2.3 million each. Lower deck seats for the same match were offered at around $200,000. Group stage tickets currently range from $380 to $4,105, with the US opening game against Paraguay in Los Angeles going for $4,105 a seat. FIFA planned to sell tickets for as low as $60, but most tickets below the $1,000 mark have become extremely scarce.

Here is what makes this actually sad and not just expensive: soccer is the one sport on earth that truly belongs to everyone. It requires nothing. A ball, a patch of ground, and you’re in. Every four years the whole world stops and watches together regardless of language or country or income. That is the thing. That is the whole point. And this summer it comes to North America and most of the world can’t afford to be in the room.

Don’t know what to watch? Don’t want to scroll through garbage? Netflix debuted a new vertical feed (it’s the middle icon on the bottom of your mobile app) and it’s just fun little clips from shows and upcoming trailers. It does double duty: helps you find things to watch, and you can just press to add something to your watchlist. It gives you something to watch while you wait for your Uber that doesn’t send you down a social media doom scroll.

Speaking of vertical feeds, we have our first ever micro-drama recommendation. Issa Rae made a 27-part series for TikTok called Screen Time where two couples are hijacked by a mysterious figure who hacks into their TV and devices and threatens to expose all their secrets unless they come clean first. It is exactly as addictive as that sounds.

The Bear (Hulu) A surprise bonus episode called Gary, and written by Cousin Richie and Mikey, just dropped out of nowhere and ends on a cliffhanger. Season 5 doesn’t start until June 25th, which is extremely rude.

Widow’s Bay (Apple TV) This is like if Stephen King stories were written in the Parks and Rec universe. I always love Neil Casey, who plays the creepy innkeeper, but the whole cast are also comedy all stars–but creepy?

The Roast of Kevin Hart (Netflix) This is live on Sunday. Get ready to hear more short jokes than you thought were possible in this space and time.

Lord of the Flies (Netflix) Visually stunning, told in four parts, each from a different character’s POV. If you never had to read this in school: schoolboys stranded on an island after a plane crash, serves as a parable for society as the boys descend into savagery. Sucks to your asmar.

The Other Bennet Sister (BritBox) The Pride and Prejudice sister nobody ever talks about finally gets her moment. Mary Bennet, the bookish, overlooked middle one, is the main character now. Jane got Mr. Bingley. Lizzie got Mr. Darcy. Mary gets a whole show. Good for her.

The House of the Spirits (Amazon) I love Latin American literature for its tradition of sprawling family sagas, political unrest, and magical realism, and this adaptation of Isabel Allende’s massive bestseller has all of it.

The Dark Wizard (HBO) A narcissistic solo free climber, BASE jumper, and adventure junkie predictably goes bananas. The music and the way his journals are animated are pretty perfect for the story. Though all I could think about the entire time was “alpine divorce.” Ultimately, his downfall was his ego and being threatened by Alex Honnold, the guy from Free Solo who just climbed a Taipei skyscraper live on Netflix. A cautionary tale for Peter Pans.

MIA (Peacock) Ozark creator Bill Dubuque is back with a series about a grieving orphan’s vengeful journey into the Miami drug scene. If you liked Ozark for the vibe but want more humidity, this is for you.

Legends (Netflix) Based on a true story: a new show dives into the secret operation that took down the UK’s rampant drug scene in the 1990s. Undercover cops, chaos, questionable decisions all around. Very British. Very good.

The Cult of Nature Boy (Hulu) A sex cult that started innocently enough with organic food, clean living, and spirituality. Some of this cult leader’s evil “innovations” include making female members fight on Instagram Live, and posting revenge porn to followers. The pipeline from wellness to sex cult is common but truly never boring.

Worst Ex Ever (Netflix) This is season two, and the first episode is about the “Deadpool Killer” Wade Wilson who already had a standalone doc on Paramount. The second episode is about a 90 Day Fiancé alum.

RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars (Paramount+) You know what it is.

Should I Marry a Murderer (Netflix) The title says it all. The answer should also be that simple and therefore happen in one episode, but she’s a compelling storyteller. She blew up her life as a doctor for this man.

IF YOU CAN ONLY WATCH ONE

Big Mistakes (Netflix) I feel like not enough people watched this before Beef came through and took up all the attention, but it’s really funny and fun.

STILL WATCHING

Hacks (HBO) I’m going to be so sad when this is over in three weeks.

RHORI (Bravo) Where do I even start? Alicia is my favorite person on television right now. She’s like Rose from the Golden Girls and Teresa from RHONJ with a creepy doll collection and a love of crackers. Meanwhile off-air, Brian, the cheating husband of Rulla, is suing his mistress for breaking their NDA and posting about the affair.

Summer House (Bravo) These last few episodes were clearly re-edited to give us more breadcrumbs on the Amanda and West situation. They are tough to watch, both of them keep talking about how much they “care” about Ciara. Did you hear the leaked audio from the reunion? Part 1 makes it clear West is just going to let Amanda take the beating. Part 3 makes it clear that Amanda secretly hates Ciara. Meanwhile, everything else in Summer House world is kicking off. Ciara did her first interview with Glamour, was then announced as a contestant on the next season of Dancing with the Stars. West and Amanda made out at a Yankees game, which hurt Kyle Cooke, and then West defended his relationship on his podcast. Kyle is reportedly also mad that West didn’t defend Amanda enough at the reunion but he’s out on the street making out with former Real Housewife Meghan King Edmonds, so who even knows. And if West’s life weren’t bad enough, his nudes leaked and then his cousin was arrested for murdering their step-grandmother. It’s dark.

FINALES

Rooster and The Comeback both end this Sunday, May 10. The Comeback is the series finale. Valerie Cherish takes her final bow after 21 years. You should probably be there for that.

You don’t need me to tell you The Devil Wears Prada 2 is out. Meryl. Anne. Emily Blunt. Stanley Tucci. It’s not as savage as the original but audiences don’t seem to care. That’s all.

The Sheep Detectives

A shepherd reads detective novels to his sheep every night, assuming they can’t possibly understand. When he’s murdered, the sheep realize they might actually know exactly what to do. Hugh Jackman, Emma Thompson, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Patrick Stewart, Brett Goldstein, Bella Ramsey, and Nicholas Braun all in one movie. Written by Craig Mazin (Chernobyl, The Last of Us). I cried.

STREAMING

Wuthering Heights (HBO Max) Finally streaming. If you want an explainer on the book before you watch it, I wrote one here.

Apex (Netflix) Charlize Theron gets hunted through the Australian wilderness by Taron Egerton playing an unhinged psycho.

Remarkably Bright Creatures (Netflix) Sally Field stars as a lonely widow who works nights at a small-town aquarium and forms an unlikely bond with a giant octopus. Based on the bestselling novel that was in every beach bag for two years running. It’s not designed to blow your mind. It’s designed to make you cry in a comforting way, and on that front it delivers completely. Mother’s Day weekend is the correct time to watch this.

Amélie It’s the 26th anniversary of the charming French movie that made baby bangs a thing and launched a thousand Pinterest boards. Watch it for the French, the color palette, and the entire personality of early internet aesthetics before anyone called it that. It holds up completely.

🎤 MUSIC NOTES

GENER8ION & Yung Lean “Storm” The internet has been losing its mind over this seven-and-a-half minute music video and I completely understand why. Swedish rapper Yung Lean plays a private school bully wreaking havoc at an all-boys boarding school. No teachers, no rules, just dares, drugs, and escalating chaos. That’s part one. Part two is an epic dance sequence on the school steps that you will not be able to stop watching. The choreography by Damien Jalet starting at 4:19 is genuinely transcendent. Directed by Romain Gavras, who is responsible for some other fun music videos like Justice’s “Stress,”and M.I.A.’s “Bad Girls”. Watch it. Then watch it again.

The New York Times published its list of the 30 Greatest Living American Songwriters The list includes Taylor Swift, Jay-Z, Bad Bunny, Dolly Parton, Carole King, Stevie Wonder, Kendrick Lamar, Missy Elliott, Lana Del Rey, Bruce Springsteen, Fiona Apple, and Young Thug, which caused its own separate internet incident. They did video interviews with them and whether you agree with every pick or not, it’s worth the rabbit hole.

🎧 PODCASTS WORTH HEARING

I found a TikTok account dedicated entirely to ranking the greatest podcast episodes of all time, which is exactly the kind of niche internet scholarship I support.

She helpfully made a Spotify playlist compiling all the episodes

Her top pick so far is Reply All’s legendary episode “The Case of the Missing Hit,” which genuinely might be one of the most entertaining podcast episodes ever made.A listener remembers a song from the late ’90s but cannot find any evidence that it ever existed. No recording. No lyrics online. Nothing. So the hosts begin this increasingly absurd investigation involving music producers, old radio knowledge, and deep dives into forgotten pop culture history.

What starts as a goofy mystery somehow becomes weirdly emotional and incredibly suspenseful. It has the pacing of a heist movie and the emotional payoff of finding an old photo album in your parents’ attic. If you’ve never heard it, listen immediately.

It also reminded me of Heavyweight, which remains one of the best podcasts ever made. The host, Jonathan Goldstein, essentially helps people revisit unresolved moments from their pasts: old friendships, misunderstandings, regrets, mysteries, embarrassments. Then he attempts to gently untangle them with humor and emotional intelligence.

Every episode somehow manages to be hilarious, deeply human, and slightly devastating. Which was the magic trick of that entire era of podcasting.

There really was a golden age of podcasts around 2014–2019. Back then podcasts felt stranger, more handcrafted, and weirdly intimate. People were experimenting with storytelling in ways radio never really allowed. I miss when they sounded like someone calling you at midnight saying, “Okay wait, I have to tell you this story.”

In honor of Mother’s Day, some of my favorite books about moms and motherhood. A range of vibes here. Some will make you want to call your mother. Some will make you want to go to therapy. Some will make you want to do both simultaneously.

FICTION

All the Other Mothers Hate Me (Sarah Harman) A former pop star, now a broke single mom in London, has to prove her son didn’t make his school bully disappear. Described as “ruefully funny and mildly disturbing” by Oprah Daily, which is exactly the kind of review that made me read something immediately.

White Oleander (Janet Fitch) A girl moves through the foster care system after her mother goes to prison for murder. The mother is magnetic and monstrous and the book is stunning. One of those novels that rewires something in your brain.

Sharp Objects (Gillian Flynn) A reporter goes home to investigate a murder and her mother is the most disturbing character in a book full of disturbing characters. Gillian Flynn understands something about mothers and daughters that most people are afraid to write.

The Joy Luck Club (Amy Tan) Four Chinese immigrant mothers and their American-born daughters, told in alternating voices across generations. About what gets lost in translation between parents and children, literally and emotionally. It will make you want to call your mother and also understand her in a way you never have before. A classic for a reason.

Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood (Rebecca Wells) A daughter tries to understand her complicated, chaotic, deeply Southern mother through the stories of her mother’s lifelong friendships. It is messy and funny and deeply felt and it will make you want to call someone.

Where’d You Go, Bernadette (Maria Semple) A brilliant, agoraphobic, deeply eccentric mother disappears, and her teenage daughter goes looking for her. Told entirely through documents, emails, and transcripts. Hilarious and then unexpectedly moving.

On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous (Ocean Vuong) A letter from a son to his mother, who cannot read. About immigration, addiction, beauty, and what we inherit from the people who raised us. It reads like poetry and will stay with you for a long time.

Beloved (Toni Morrison) An escaped slave is violently haunted by the ghost of the baby who died before she could even give her a name..

The Lost Daughter (Elena Ferrante) A woman on vacation becomes obsessed with a young mother and her daughter and slowly unravels something dark about herself. Ferrante writes motherhood in a way that is deeply uncomfortable and completely impossible to put down.

Room (Emma Donoghue) A mother and her five-year-old son live in an 11-by-11-foot room. That’s all I’ll say. Read it.

NONFICTION

I’ll Show Myself Out (Jessi Klein) Essays about motherhood, middle age, and the general absurdity of being a woman navigating both at the same time. Extremely funny.

Born a Crime (Trevor Noah) About growing up mixed-race in apartheid South Africa, but really it’s a love letter to his mother, who is one of the most extraordinary people you will ever encounter in a book. Also get the audiobook. Also read by the author. Also perfect.

Crying in H Mart (Michelle Zauner) A daughter grieves her Korean mother through food. If you have not read this yet, I genuinely don’t know what you’re waiting for.

I’m Glad My Mom Died (Jennette McCurdy) Get the audiobook, read by Jennette herself, which is the only correct way to experience it. One of the most talked-about memoirs of the last few years and every bit as good as you’ve heard.

Fair Play (Eve Rodsky) The one to give the partner in your life who thinks they’re doing their fair share of the invisible labor. A system for dividing domestic work that actually makes sense. Practical and quietly radical.

📱 RABBIT HOLES

RIP Ask Jeeves. The search engine that launched in 1996 and was honestly a proto-AI chatbot before AI chatbots existed. You could just ask it a question in plain English, which was insane at the time. It officially shut down May 1st after 30 years. Their farewell statement said “Jeeves’ spirit endures,” which is the saddest thing I have read this week. He was a real one.

Did you take the New York Times How Cultured Are You quiz? Not to brag but I got editor level. The culture it tests is extremely specific and also somewhat old, which I say as someone who apparently has it.

NASA has a tool that lets you search your name in satellite imagery and find it somewhere on Earth. This is mine.

Those rainbow clouds you’ve been seeing in your feeds are not AI. They’re real, they’re called iridescent clouds, and they’re caused by light diffracting through tiny water droplets or ice crystals at just the right angle. Here’s more on why they’re suddenly everywhere.

TIK TALK

Hallelujah trend started when Justin Bieber (beautifully) performed “Everything Hallelujah” at Coachella and TikTok built a whole format around it within 24 hours. The trend is simply: list things you love in life and put “hallelujah” after each one. Sweet treat hallelujah. Nine hours of sleep hallelujah. The White House did a version. Lewis Capaldi listed fajitas and Love on the Spectrum. It is the most wholesome thing the internet has done in years and I am choosing to focus on it.

My Top 5 Horror Movies trend is the evil twin. People list their five most personally terrifying experiences except none of them are movies. They’re things like “accidentally waving back at someone who wasn’t waving at you” and “checking your bank account after you convinced yourself you deserved something.” Accurate. Devastating.

Speedrunning Scientology is exactly what it sounds like. Teens are filming themselves running into Scientology buildings to see how far they can get before being escorted out, and it has spread from Hollywood Boulevard all the way to New York and Vancouver, where 300 people showed up. The Hollywood location has since removed its door handles.

A travel influencer named Jake Rosmarin booked what was supposed to be a polar cruise from Argentina to Antarctica and is now quarantined on a ship off the coast of Cape Verde because of the hantavirus outbreak that has killed three people. He posted a tearful video from the deck. The internet responded with memes. At least eight people have the virus. The ship is currently heading to Spain.

If you’re scared to get a colonoscopy, don’t be. The actual procedure was painless, easy, and honestly kind of relaxing. Best nap I’ve had in months.

The prep, however, is where the Lord tests you. They give you what appears to be a small aquarium full of laxatives and tell you to “stay hydrated” as if you’ll be doing anything besides sprinting between your couch and the bathroom for six straight hours.

Do not make plans. Do not “just pop out for a quick errand.” You are effectively entering a committed relationship with your toilet for the evening.

But truly: get screened. It can save your life, and modern medicine has made the actual procedure shockingly easy.

Funny AF Kevin Hart found up and coming comedians, put them in actual comedy clubs in LA, New York, and Chicago, and let Keegan-Michael Key, Kumail Nanjiani, Chelsea Handler, and Nikki Glaser tell them the truth about their sets. The winner gets their own Netflix special. What makes it genuinely great is that it treats stand-up like the craft it actually is, you’ll come out of it understanding timing, crowd work, and structure in a way you didn’t before. Also it’s just really funny.

Unchosen If you want a fictional companion piece to the cult content, and if you like Harlan Coben style shows, you’ll like this show where a fundamentalist woman ends up helping an ex-convict. Are there any cult leaders that aren’t sex pests?

If you like romances and young adult shows this isn’t normally the season for those so we have to look overseas. There are 2 cute ones:

18th Rose A Filipino coming-of-age story set in the 2000s. Cute, nostalgic, and exactly the vibe for when you want something warm.

And

Sold Out on You A Korean Rom-Com about a QVC style host and a mushroom farmer. While it may feel like the jobs on these Korean shows are madlibs, this works.

HULU/Disney+

The Testaments The follow up to The Handmaids Tale. Chase Infiniti, the daughter in One Battle after Another, stars, scary Aunt Lydia is back, and we have a new mysterious girl. Like the book, the episodes are each from their different POVs, and like the book, there’s good secrets and twists coming up.

Running Wild with Bear Grylls Watch the Matthew McConaughey episode if only for the Woody Harrelson story. You will not be disappointed.

Rock the Block Other than House Hunters, and Love It or List It, I think this is my favorite home Reno show. HGTV pros compete against each other to add value to identical houses. I like seeing how they each interpret the same spaces.

HBOMax

Half Man Remember Baby Reindeer? Well, this is the new show from Richard Gad and it is INTENSE. This one’s about a decades long toxic friendship between 2 men.

Euphoria It’s back, it’s chaotic. Rue is giving Big Lebowski energy and it’s looking like Cassie and Nate’s wedding will be the big finale event that brings them all together and the only time they will all be at the same place–just like a Real Housewives season.

Rooster Steve Carell plays a famous author whose complicated relationship with his daughter lands him on a college campus where she’s in the middle of a divorce. Bill Lawrence, the Ted Lasso and Scrubs guy, created it, which tells you everything about the tone. It was the most watched comedy premiere on HBO in over a decade and it’s already been picked up for season 2 so it’s a safe investment of your time.

Hacks Deborah Vance and Hannah are two of the best characters on television, full stop. If you haven’t started yet, go back to season one this weekend and thank me later.

The Comeback This show continues to break my heart and make me laugh, from a writer’s meltdown about not wanting to train an ai to replace them, to a beautiful send off for a hairstylist and, on a meta level, to the Warner Brothers lot where this was shot, and which will turn into some kind of amusement park if the Paramount/Warner deal goes through. I will miss this lot even though I was once banned for getting too many parking tickets on my golf cart. Not to be confused with the time I crashed my cart into a fence on the Universal lot because the brakes gave out. What I’m saying is I’m not a great driver, but there is no better portrait of what Hollywood feels like right now than The Comeback.

Summer House At this point it is mandatory viewing for the cultural zeitgeist, as tough as it is to watch the Amanda and West situation unfold in real time with Ciara right there. You will be talking about this with strangers.

RHORI These Rhode Island women are all accidentally hilarious. Bratz doll collections in the living room, casually talking about running over a woman, pink jeeps, pizza chips, fig newtons as fruit. They’re just delightful.

RHOBH Reunion I know Dorit has been an absolute nightmare of a human, but remember when Sutton was going through a divorce and was a real see you next Tuesday? Or when Erika was going through hers and acting like a Bond villain? I hate to say it, but we have to let Dorit act out and be terrible too. It’s only fair.

Ladies of London I dare you to find another show where one of the cast lives in the largest house in the country, has a safari, and still wears crop tops.

LOL: UK Comedians try not to laugh for six hours while doing everything in their power to make each other crack. A joy of slow tv.

Jury Duty: Company Retreat This season is not getting as much attention as the first but the main guy, Anthony, is a dear heart and this season pulls off something genuinely difficult. The last episode where they show Anthony how they pulled it all off is worth the whole season because all the actors pulling off this stunt genuinely fell in love with him.

The Boys If you’ve come this far on this violent Superhero satire, you may as well see how they all die? Live?

Deadloch Australian murder mystery but make it a comedy.

AMC

Oh AMC, you don’t get enough credit for your excellent programming. I’m on record stumping for Dark Winds and Interview with a Vampire but now there’s a new show to recommend.

The Audacity A self-appointed “inventor of the future” tech CEO and the self-serving psychologist he’s blackmailing into white collar crime get engulfed in a scandal sparked by the exploitation of personal data. It’s one of those shows that may end up predicting the future like The Simpsons.

From S4 A nightmarish town in the middle of nowhere that traps everyone who enters. No way in, no way out, and terrifying nocturnal creatures in the surrounding forest. If that’s not enough to make you watch it, Stephen King likes it. It’s already been picked up for a 5th and final season.

APPLE

Your Friends and Neighbors Jon Hamm plays a recently divorced hedge fund guy who starts robbing his wealthy neighbors to maintain his lifestyle, and new wrinkle, now he’s being blackmailed by James Marsden.

Margo’s Got Money Issues I genuinely love Nick Offerman as a human and in anything he does so I was obviously going to appreciate this show about a young woman who gets pregnant by her college professor, starts an OnlyFans to pay her bills, and ends up going viral with some unexpected help from Nick, her pro-wrestler father. It’s funny and sweet.

PARAMOUNT

Survivor 50 Something happened this week that hasn’t ever happened in 50 seasons. This show is still surprising us after all these years.

Marty Supreme (Hulu)

Finally streaming. If you missed it in theaters or just didn’t feel like leaving your house, now is your moment. Josh Safdie directs Timothée Chalamet as a 1950s ping pong hustler with a dream nobody takes seriously. Gwyneth Paltrow, Tyler the Creator, Mr. Wonderful, and Fran Drescher are all somehow in this. It’s chaotic and grimy and worth every second. Timmy’s giving big swing, big personality.

No Other Choice (Hulu)

Park Chan-wook, the man behind Oldboy and one of my favorite movies, The Handmaiden, made a movie about a laid-off factory worker who decides the most logical solution to his job search is to start murdering his competition. It is hilarious and terrifying, sometimes in the same scene. Inexplicably snubbed by the Oscars but still so worth it.

Outcome (Apple)

Jonah Hill wrote and directed a Hollywood satire where Keanu Reeves plays a beloved movie star being blackmailed. Cameron Diaz is his best friend. Martin Scorsese plays himself. Keanu playing a version of Keanu is extremely my thing and I will not apologize for that.

Roommates (Netflix)

Adam Sandler produces, his daughter stars, and the whole thing is a cameo-stuffed comedy about a freshman college roommate situation that goes spectacularly sideways.

We Have A Real-Life Hannah Montana Situation. The bestselling author of The Housemaid series (and like 100 other books) revealed she is actually a 45-year-old brain doctor who kept her identity secret so the fame wouldn’t interfere with her medical career. Casual. Imagine writing thrillers as your side hustle while casually saving lives?

The books everyone is talking about this week are:

Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke

Natalie is a tradwife influencer with millions of followers, a picture-perfect farmhouse, a handsome husband, and six beautiful children. Yes, there are nannies and producers hidden behind all of it and her husband is the heir to a political dynasty, but the content is immaculate. Then she wakes up in 1855 as an actual pioneer wife on an actual farm with no camera crew, no industrial-grade appliances, and no way out. The book spends the rest of its time asking whether what she’s living is a hoax, a twisted reality show, or something much darker. I haven’t finished it yet but Roxane Gay says the ending is completely off the rails, which is the only blurb I need. Anne Hathaway is already attached to produce and star in the adaptation.

Famesick by Lena Dunham

Seven years in the making, and Lena did not hold back. The memoir covers her rise from Girls at 25 to the decade that nearly broke her through illness, addiction, opioids, rehab…and she names names the whole way through. Adam Driver allegedly hurled a chair at her trailer wall and then never spoke to her again once the show wrapped. Her former best friend and Girls producer Jenni Konner told her she wasn’t funny anymore once she got thin. And then there’s Jack Antonoff: she came home from a bone density test to find an unnamed teen pop star (Lorde) weeping on their couch in his lap. And yes, she did reach out to the person who wrote the infamous powerpoint. She does write warmly about Taylor Swift, who she says she wrote the whole book to, specifically Evermore. It’s messy and raw and compulsively readable in the way that only Lena Dunham can pull off. Already a #1 NYT Bestseller.

This is the time of year when the broadcast shows start wrapping up and the Emmy bait shows start dropping.

Love on the Spectrum (Netflix)

There’s a scene where they all start singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow and I swear it made everything feel okay for a few minutes. This show continues to be the antidote to literally everything. It’s sincere without being saccharine, funny without trying or making fun of anyone.

Your Friends and Neighbors S2 (Apple)

Season 2 is back and doubling down on what worked. Jon Hamm continues his quiet spiral through rich suburbia, stealing from the same people he still has to see at dinner. It’s glossy, tense, and has that specific tone where everyone is pretending things are fine while absolutely nothing is fine. This season introduces James Marsden who I’m assuming will be Jon Hamm’s new nemesis.

The Count Of Monte Christo (PBS)

Despite many people in my life telling me to read this when I was young, I resisted and you know what? They were right. This is the epic revenge thriller. This version has Sam Claflin and Jeremy Irons in the story of a man falsely imprisoned on his wedding day by his jealous friends. He then spends 15 years plotting his revenge until he re-emerges as a rich Count, then meticulously ruins the lives of his enemies. Very satisfying.

Real Housewives of Rhode Island (Bravo/Peacock)

This may be the most promising new Housewives show since Salt Lake City. The energy is very early Jersey, with a cast that actually know each other in real life. Which is the whole ballgame.

XO Kitty S3 (Netflix)

Did you like The Summer I Turned Pretty? To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before? Then complete the Jenny Han cinematic universe. This last season was light, chaotic, and incredibly watchable.

Love Overboard (Hulu)

As evidenced by the cancelling of The Bachelorette, the biggest challenge of modern reality TV is casting. There was a pre-social media golden age of MTV afternoon programming where people said insane things on camera and simply went back to their lives. No brand deals, no media training, just vibes. This show feels like a return to that.

Bella is refreshingly honest without tipping into something darker, and David openly saying he loves plastic and his body type is “enhancements” before betraying his partner for a BBL baddie is the kind of behavior that used to be standard issue on reality TV. Messy, impulsive, zero long-term thinking. It’s not aspirational, and that’s why it works.

STILL WATCHING

Summer House

There is no bigger pop culture news right now than Amanda and West and the absolute betrayal of Ciara. This is the only story that matters. Jen Shah gave a full post-prison interview and it barely registered. Kyle gave a street interview with his leash reactive dogs and said the funniest thing about this situation: “Carl is a mess” The reunion tapes the 15th but the only way for them to get out of this mess is for Amanda and West to say they’re in love and get married. Anything short of that and the world will continue to hate them.

Meanwhile, the soft-swinging cinematic universe continues expanding. Chase, Miranda’s ex, and Taylor’s soft swinging partner, is now making out with Jessi. Jessi sent Miranda apology flowers, and now Chase is circling Bronwyn from RHOSLC. We are fully in crossover territory. This is the Mormon multiverse.

Survivor 50

But apparently, according to science, butt muscles are the key to longevity so whether you want to train for a long life or Survivor 51 keep squatting.

The Drama

I’m hoping you haven’t been spoiled by the twist of this movie yet. DON’T GOOGLE IT. If you somehow missed the barrage of press by 2 of the best in the promo tour game, Robert Pattinson and Zendaya are an engaged couple who, like in Something Bad is Going To Happen, are a week out from the wedding when things implode. This is definitely not a rom com, despite the marketing.

Untold: The Death and Life of Lamar Odom

Khloe Kardashian, Lamar, his ex, and his kids are all very honest in this tale where one the biggest tragedies is apparently being on The Clippers. Honestly though, thank god Khloe was there.

Crime 101 (Amazon)

I love seeing movies that actually take place in LA. It gives me hope for the future—even though technically this is not a very hopeful movie since it’s about Chris Hemsworth as a jewel thief and Mark Ruffalo as the detective chasing him. Think Heat.

Merrily We Roll Along (Netflix)

If you like musicals, Sondheim, and theater lore this is merrily rolling right at ya. This play was an infamous flop about college friends and their lives 20 years on told in reverse. But, despite its inauspicious start, it is every theater person’s favorite. This isn’t like Wicked though, this is a recording of a live theater performance.

The Testament of Ann Lee (Hulu)

Directed by one of the co-writers of The Brutalist, this is genuinely unlike any movie I’ve ever seen. Amanda Seyfried plays the leader of the Shakers, an offshoot of the Quakers that shake and dance and sing. It’s a musical(?) but all the singing and dancing are hymns and worship. It follows her from childhood, to religious revelation, to leader of the group, to coming to the US to spread the word, to the building of the Shaker way of life. Shakers invented the clothespin, circular saw, flat broom, washing machine, seed packets, metal pens, condensed milk, and the Shaker style of furniture with its famous tapered legs and dovetail joints — so maybe they were on to something. Spoiler alert for history: the Shaker style may be all that is left of them because when your principal tenet is celibacy you eventually run out of members.

Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen (Netflix)

The Duffer Brothers, of Stranger Things fame, executive produced this, and if you like horror movies like It Follows and Drag Me to Hell and think marriage is a death trap, this is for you. It uses a family curse to explore themes of dread, personal sacrifice, and the loss of self in toxic relationships. Is it cold feet? Or the visceral feeling that this is inevitable and will kill you. I will warn you: the sound design is genuinely terrifying.

JURY DUTY Presents: Company Retreat (Amazon)

This is straight up The Office with one normal person plopped in, but it works because the commitment level is so high. The scenarios escalate in a way that feels both ridiculous and uncomfortably plausible if you’ve ever been trapped at a corporate offsite. It’s lighter than the original Jury Duty, but still has that same tone.

Love Overboard (Hulu)

A group of singles on a yacht, bad decisions, and the kind of romantic chaos that only happens when no one can leave. The format has a genuinely good hook: couples get to live the high life on the upper deck while everyone else has to work the yacht like they’re on Below Deck, scrubbing floors and serving the people they’re also trying to date. And when you get eliminated, you walk the plank. Literally. It moves fast, it knows exactly what it is, and it doesn’t pretend to be anything deeper. Sometimes that’s exactly what the doctor ordered.
