Most executives treat AI tools as answer machines. Ask a question, get a response, move on. That approach works for quick tasks, but it fails at the one thing leadership actually needs from AI: building real understanding fast enough to make good decisions under pressure.

Claude offers four distinct ways to learn a topic, and each one solves a different problem. Knowing which one to use, and when, is a small decision with a large return.

Build a learning skill

A skill is a saved set of instructions Claude reads every time you ask about a topic. You define your rules once, inside Customize, then Skills. Click the plus button, select Create skill, describe the topic and how you want Claude to teach it to you, and Claude builds the skill for you to save and activate.

From that point forward, every conversation on that topic follows your rules automatically. No repeating context. No starting from zero. For executives managing multiple ongoing learning threads, this is the difference between rebuilding context weekly and compounding it.

Turn on learning mode

Learning mode changes how Claude responds. Instead of handing you the answer, it asks questions and guides you toward it yourself. Go to Customize, then Skills, click the plus button, browse skills, search for Learning, and install it. Open any chat and ask your question from there.

This matters because information received is not the same as understanding earned. Learning mode forces the second one, which is the only kind that survives contact with a real business decision.

Build a study project

A Claude Project is a private workspace that retains everything you upload to it. Go to claude.ai/projects, click New Project, name it after the topic, and upload your best sources, PDFs, articles, notes, book chapters. Every conversation inside that project draws from your curated material rather than general knowledge.

This is the closest equivalent to building your own internal knowledge base with an analyst who never forgets what you gave them. Add better sources as you find them, and the project gets sharper with use.

Run the Feynman loop

The Feynman technique is one of the most reliable ways to learn anything at depth. You explain a concept in simple terms. Claude identifies the gaps. You try again. You repeat until it holds up.

Tell Claude you are going to explain a topic and ask it to act as if it knows nothing, flagging any gaps in your explanation. Explain the concept in your own words, as simply as you can. Claude will point out what is missing or unclear. Keep going until you can explain it with no gaps left.

If you cannot explain something simply, you do not understand it yet. That is not a criticism, it is the entire value of the exercise, and it is the fastest way to find out where your grasp of a subject is weaker than you assumed.

Six prompts worth saving

Plan my learning: ask Claude to build a full session plan covering the twenty percent of concepts behind eighty percent of the results, with a review question at the end of each session.

Quiz me: after studying a topic, ask for ten questions that increase in difficulty, with feedback after each answer.

Break it into levels: ask Claude to split the topic into five levels from beginner to advanced, with one clear goal per level.

Find my gaps: ask Claude to pose five questions that would expose what you do not actually know yet.

Summarize it simply: ask for a plain language summary, free of jargon, clear enough that a curious twelve year old could explain it to someone else.

Build me a cheat sheet: ask for a one page reference with key concepts, common mistakes, and the three things to remember above everything else.

The strategic point

None of these methods are about using AI more. They are about using it with intention. In my work applying the IA Decision Framework with executive teams, the organizations that get real value from AI are rarely the ones with the most tools. They are the ones whose leaders took the time to actually understand what they were deciding on, not just delegate the thinking away.

Choose the method that matches the gap you are trying to close. Skills for recurring context. Learning mode for genuine comprehension. Projects for depth built on your own sources. The Feynman loop for the moments when you need to know, without doubt, that you understand something well enough to defend the decision built on it.

Most companies talk about AI governance as if the main challenge were writing a policy.

It is not.

The real challenge is making responsible AI usable inside daily work. A policy that nobody understands, nobody follows, and nobody operationalizes does not reduce risk. It only creates the illusion of control.

Effective AI guardrails need four layers.

1. Governance

This is where ownership becomes clear.

Who is responsible for AI decisions?
What types of AI use are allowed?
How much risk is the company willing to accept?
When is human approval required?

Without governance, AI adoption becomes fragmented. Different teams make different decisions, risk tolerance becomes subjective, and accountability disappears when something goes wrong.

Governance defines the rules of the game.

2. Operating Model

This is where strategy becomes practical.

It is not enough to say that employees can or cannot use AI. Companies need to clarify which tools are approved, which teams are trained, how support works, and who is accountable for each part of the AI workflow.

This is where many organizations fail. They create the policy, publish the document, and assume adoption will happen naturally.

It will not.

Guardrails only work when people know how to apply them.

3. Process

This is where AI enters the real workflow.

When should an AI output be reviewed by a human?
What issues must be escalated?

Your environment dictates your efficiency. Don’t start from scratch every time you open a session.

• The CLAUDE.md File: Initialize this once. Claude reads this file every session and follows the foundational rules you set inside it. It’s your baseline context.

• Automate with Shortcuts: Use /commands to save repetitive tasks. Explain a complex task once, map it to a shortcut, and trigger it instantly moving forward.

• Context is King: Link Claude directly to your workspace (Notion, Slack, etc.) so it can read and act inside those environments natively.

• Switch Modalities: Use /skills to explicitly shift Claude into specialist modes—whether you need a reviewer, a planner, or a writer.
