Hidden beneath the streets of Midtown, Tomi Jazz feels like the kind of place you’d accidentally stumble into while wandering through Tokyo after dark.

The underground jazz kissaten-inspired space combines live music, dim lighting, and Japanese comfort food in a way that feels effortlessly authentic. While the performances draw the crowds, the menu is equally worth the visit. Think crispy katsu sandwiches, Japanese-style pasta, curry rice, and small plates perfect for sharing.

And yes, there’s almost always a line.

We wait close to an hour each time we dine here, and somehow it still feels worth it every single time. Tomi Jazz doesn’t take reservations, so expect to queue up, on weekdays AND weekends. But once you’re inside, listening to live jazz while digging into some of the best Japanese comfort food in the city, you’ll understand why so many people are willing to wait.

Order: Shrimp Croquette, Champon Noodles, Fried Oysters, and the Honey Toast with Matcha Ice Cream for dessert (a must!)

Why it feels like Japan: The atmosphere. From the tucked-away entrance to the live jazz soundtrack, it captures the magic of discovering a hidden basement spot in Tokyo.

Okatte Tanto

Known for its homestyle Japanese cooking and regional specialties, this Midtown East favorite serves dishes that go beyond the usual sushi and ramen lineup. The menu highlights comforting flavors and traditional recipes that are often harder to find outside Japan.

The food feels like the kind of meal you’d stumble upon while exploring Japan’s quieter neighborhoods, where the focus is less on trends and more on tradition.

It’s the kind of place that reminds you that some of the best Japanese meals aren’t elaborate, they’re simply made with care and packed with flavor.

Oh Taisho (Yakitori Taisho)

If you’ve ever spent a night hopping between izakayas in Japan, Oh Taisho feels instantly familiar.

Tucked along St. Marks Place, this longtime East Village favorite captures the lively, no-frills energy of the yakitori spots you’ll find throughout Tokyo. The menu is packed with charcoal-grilled skewers, Japanese beer, sake, and comforting small plates that make it easy to settle in and stay awhile.

What makes Oh Taisho special is that it doesn’t try too hard, it simply feels authentic. From the bustling atmosphere to the smoky aroma coming from the grill, it’s the kind of place that reminds us of squeezing into a tiny izakaya after a long day of exploring Japan.

If you’ve spent time in Japan during the colder months, there’s a good chance you’ve gathered around a steaming hot pot with friends after a long day of exploring. That’s exactly the feeling Kimura brings to New York City.

Located in the heart of the East Village, Kimura specializes in traditional Japanese hot pots like motsunabe, shabu-shabu, sukiyaki, and mizutaki, alongside yakitori, sushi, and classic izakaya dishes.

What we love most is that Kimura showcases a side of Japanese cuisine many travelers don’t discover until they venture beyond the major tourist attractions. It’s authentic, comforting, and feels like a hidden gem despite being right in the middle of Manhattan.
