There are two ways to be recognized for your work.

People can know it — they admire what you made, the finished thing. Or they can see it — they recognize what it actually took out of you to make it well. Most of us get plenty of the first and almost none of the second, and we feel that gap even on the days we can’t name it.

I felt it sharply last month. Someone told me my work was great. I said thanks, smiled, moved on with my day like a normal, well-adjusted adult — and something quietly closed behind my eyes anyway.

I recognized that exact motion sitting across from Cat for this Field Note.

What she told me — about a teacher who saw her at eight years old, decades before anyone started calling her work great — is the audio story below. It’s one of the clearest examples I’ve come across of what being seen actually looks like, and what the rest of us settle for instead.

I walked away wanting to ask everyone I know the same question, and I’m asking you too, wherever you’re reading this.

If a name came to mind, go act on it. Tell them what you’re building. If nobody came to mind, that’s just data worth sitting with.

Being known by a lot of people and being seen by even one are two completely different kinds of full. I’ll take the second any day, even though my entire business model runs on the first.

I’m still figuring out mine, for the record. Someone introduces me before a talk and calls me a photographer, and I let it stand, every time, because photographer is the word nobody argues with. The truer word is heavier — a body of work, a title I’d actually have to defend instead of carrying it around like a laminated badge. Haven’t said it out loud yet. Give me time?

I understand why she says it. You want them to wash their hands. You want them to sit through circle time without dismantling it. But somewhere between preschool and adulthood, the teacher got replaced. A boss. A culture. A voice inside your own head that still has her exact rhythm.

And most of us never stopped following the rule. We just forgot it was ever a rule. We started calling it the truth.

That’s what this episode is about. Not the productivity systems, not the five-year plans, not the calendar. The belief installed underneath all of it, before anyone was old enough to question it: obligation comes before desire, duty comes before self, and you earn your presence before you’re allowed to have one.

I trace where that comes from. I talk about records, and what happens to a life when the parts that made you never get written down. I tell you about a 24 year old named Lydia Lee, and the line she said that I have not stopped carrying since: the question was never whether I belonged. The question was whose permission I was going to ask.

And I get into Ram Dass, and the idea that we are all G-d in drag. Which sounds like a bit until you watch it happen in a Field Note session for the fiftieth time. Someone stops performing. Something older than the performance comes through.

At the end, I ask you to write yourself a permission slip. People have cried doing this. People have laughed like they got away with something. What they got away with was themselves.

The forgetting doesn’t have to be permanent. Somebody has to keep the record of the walk.

Her father carried $15,000 in cash across the country because the banks wouldn’t hold it for him.

He was a Pullman porter. He spotted a block in the South Bronx from a train window and decided that was where his American dream would live.

His daughter grew up on that block. Left. Came back. Found the community she’d been looking for two blocks from her parents’ house.

And the building her father used to look up at from the train? She and her husband James spent years transforming it — a 1908 rail station, abandoned, reclaimed — into a space where the South Bronx gets to feel like exactly what it is.

That question has been rattling around in my head ever since. I’ve spent most of my life at the intersection of art and business, watching the business side decide the vision. Majora reminded me that the picture comes first. Before the argument. Before the room fills up with people who need convincing.

I was eighteen, walking through Chinatown in Philadelphia with a Nikon FM2, a roll of black and white film and absolutely no idea what I was doing. I had been asking people if I could photograph them for hours and everyone had said no — not meanly, just efficiently, the way people move through a city when they have somewhere to be and a stranger with a camera is not on the itinerary.

Then I saw him.

Phillies cap, bright white hair, the kind of face that carries everything it’s been through. I stopped. Something told me to stop. I asked if I could take his picture.

He looked at me like I had three heads. “You want to photograph me?” “But why?”

I said: you have beautiful eyes.

I don’t think anyone had told him that before. He went still for a second, then shrugged — that particular shrug that means fine, okay, I’ll allow it — and said: oh, alright.

His whole face changed. He let me in. I got the shot.

I have been chasing that moment ever since. The instinct that fired before I could justify it, and I did it anyway. Admittedly, walking up to strangers and saying something true about them is a wild thing to do. It still is.

The problem is the container

I have always been this way. Something crosses my path — a sentence in a podcast, a quote in a book, a phrase someone says in conversation — and something in me goes: that. Save that. I don’t know why. I just know it matters.

The problem has never been the instinct, but rather, what happens to it next.

For years, it went into my camera roll. A screenshot between a photo of my daughters and a blurry receipt I needed for taxes. It went into notes apps I never opened, documents I created with good intentions and abandoned by Tuesday, voice memos I recorded while walking and never transcribed. The gut reaction was real, but the infrastructure kept failing it.

Then one of my best friends, — who has since become a Field Note subject, but that’s a story for later — pulled me into Sublime for a project we were working on together. is the kind of person who finds the right tool before anyone else knows it exists. I made my own account not long after. Something about it felt different from everything else I’d tried. The design, the way it looked and moved, the feeling that saving something here was an act of care rather than an act of filing.

I’d been using Sublime as a place to hold whatever my ADHD brain had decided mattered that day, which is a lot of things, often unrelated, always urgent in the moment. What kept me coming back was the lack of friction — no elaborate tagging system, no folders I’d have to build and then abandon. Save the thing, find it later, let the connections surface when they’re ready.

Then I found out about Podcast Magic — the tool where you email a screenshot and it becomes a card in your library. I assumed it was too good to be true. It is absolutely not. The clip is just there, waiting, clean and findable, without the rabbit hole of tracking down the episode, scrubbing to the timestamp, copying the transcript into some document I’ll never open again. One email. Done.

For the first time, the container matched the instinct.

Field Notes is the same instinct

In March of 2025 I started a practice called Field Notes from the Work (and the Wild). The methodology is simple on the surface: I sit with someone for one to three hours in the place they feel most like themselves, photograph them, and create a narrative piece that distills the conversation into its essence. I call them Spoken Records. Fifty Field Notes in, the most consistent thing I’ve found is that the interesting part is never the outcome. The launch, the title, the exit, never matter. Instead, what came before it, the seeds, the failed attempts, the permission someone finally gave themselves — that’s the human record. The writer who hadn’t picked up a pen in fifteen years. The keynote speaker who lost his voice. That’s what I’m after.

The whole practice runs on the same gut instinct. Something says this person has a story that isn’t being told. Then I show up.

Here is what the process actually looks like from the inside.

I identify a subject — always through word of mouth. We block two hours. The prompt I give them is simple: where do you feel most like yourself? That’s where we meet. Someone’s music studio, their garden, a park bench in Tompkins Square where pigeons keep interrupting, a home office with the door locked against the rest of the house. What matters is that they chose it.

When I arrive, I bring my camera — a Nikon D780 with a 50mm and a 35mm lens — and a rough set of questions. No artificial lighting, ever. What’s there is what I use. Both of us are going to have to trust something we can’t fully name yet. I ask them the question — when do you feel most like yourself — and I let the answer go wherever it needs to go. An hour in, we’re somewhere neither of us expected. I’m photographing throughout, not posed shots but conversational portraits, catching the moment someone stops thinking about what to say and just says it.

After the session I go home with a recording that runs anywhere from an hour to three, and I start what I think of as the homework. The photos first, because reliving the session through images is how I find the emotional spine of the story. Then the transcript, where I pull threads and look for the one-liner that becomes the thesis of the whole piece. Then I start writing the Spoken Record — the five to ten minute narrative that becomes the audio heart of each Field Note.

This is where the gut instinct and Sublime meet.

Nikita’s piece is called Life Is the Curriculum. When I sat down to write her story, I opened Sublime and found a Ram Dass quote I’d saved months earlier, tucked in my Ram Dass Lectures collection. Ram Dass had been pressing his teacher Emmanuel with a question a lot of us carry: why is life so painful, so messy, so confusing? Emmanuel didn’t spiritualize the struggle away. He said, simply: life is the curriculum. Aren’t you going to take it?

I had saved that quote on a morning walk without knowing what it was for. Something told me to save it. When I opened Nikita’s transcript — her story about the space she holds between words, the inhale before the exhale, the way she moves through difficulty without collapsing under it — that quote became the spine of the entire piece. The title came from it. The practice that closes the piece came from it. The whole frame of Nikita’s story came from a fragment I’d saved months earlier without knowing why.

That is the thing most tools can’t hold. The noticing that preceded the knowing.

I also use Cosmos for finding visual and philosophical context — Ursula K. Le Guin, Octavia Butler, adrienne maree brown end up in a lot of my Field Notes, because I want to share reverence for the work that has informed this work. But Sublime is where the raw material lives. The Ram Dass lectures, podcast clips, the Field Notes inspiration collection. And then, because my brain works the way it works, there is also “Patriarchy” and “Colonization 2.0” sitting right alongside everything else. The mind pulls toward what it needs.

I’ve also uploaded every published Field Note as an individual card in Sublime. Each piece lives there now, findable, shareable, able to surface in someone else’s search when they’re looking for something adjacent. Making the collection public is a deliberate choice — the raw materials of the practice, visible alongside the finished work.

Field Notes and Sublime share the same quality: taking something seriously before the world has a reason to. Both honor the parts of the process that the output makes invisible. The fragment, the noticing. The thing saved before it knows what it is.

That instinct started long before Field Notes. It started with a camera.

Photography as energetic exchange

I had been given a camera at six years old. By high school I was shooting weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs, prom photos, yearbook portraits, anything anyone would pay me to photograph. I went to art school, studied composition and the history of the medium, and somewhere in the middle of it realized that none of that was why I picked up a camera.

I picked it up because it was a reason to be in rooms I had no other business being in. To sit with people long enough to see something true about them.

That freshman year in Wilmington, DE, meant construction workers, sanitation workers, the overlooked economy doing the work that keeps everything running. People the city walked past without seeing. I knew what it felt like to be unseen, and something about turning the camera toward people who rarely had it pointed at them felt necessary in a way I couldn’t articulate yet.

What I’m really asking for, every time, is permission. Someone deciding they are worth being seen — that’s what the image holds when it’s working.

When I started Field Notes, I knew the photography wasn’t about aesthetics. It was about creating the environment where someone could actually be in the photo — where the hours of conversation had built enough trust that the camera just caught what was already there. The best compliment I receive, regularly, is that people feel like they’re actually in their Field Notes portraits. That’s what happens when someone has decided, even for a moment, that they are worth being seen.

Photography is light — and what the camera records during those hours together, the attention, the trust, the threads pulled taut between two people genuinely present with each other, is what stays in the image long after the conversation ends.

The archive before the archive

For a long time, I measured the success of my work by how it looked on the outside. At my last company we went viral constantly. It felt like proof of something. When I started Field Notes I expected the same feedback loop. What I got instead was near-silence on the surface and something entirely different underneath. Very few comments, very few likes, and then consistently — emails, DMs, text messages from people describing how a specific piece had changed how they move through the world.

That gap between what gets measured and what actually happens is the gap Field Notes was built to document. Vanity metrics capture the official record. The human record shows up in your inbox at 11PM from a stranger who has listened three times.

Sublime holds the same kind of evidence. The Ram Dass quote that became Nikita’s story. The lecture clip saved on a walk in October that showed up in a Field Note published in March. The portrait cards accumulating in a public library, findable by someone who doesn’t know yet why they needed to find them.

We are living through the most documented moment in human history. The official record has never been more accessible. And underneath all of it, the same thing keeps getting left out — the thinking that preceded the thought, the grappling that produced the certainty, the noticing that preceded the knowing.

I started with man with beautiful eyes in Chinatown who let a stranger with a camera slow down long enough to see them. I’m still doing that. One conversation at a time, one fragment saved before it knows what it is, one person deciding they are worth being seen.

That’s what Sublime is, for me — breadcrumbs left for the version of me who will, six months from now, understand why I saved what I did. The archive before the archive.

The Moment I Understood What I Was Doing

I was a freshman in college, walking through Philadelphia, when I saw a man sitting on top of an electrical box.

His eyes stopped me.

I had a camera I was still learning to use and a semester of street photography that had been keeping me together while I fell apart in private. I was struggling with depression for the first time in my life — calling my mom from my dorm room sobbing, finally asking for help. And somehow, in the middle of all of that, I kept going outside and walking toward strangers.

I walked up to him and said hello. He wasn’t sure of me. He told me he was a veteran. I stuck out my hand.

I’m 5’2”. I’ve always been an athlete. My handshake is firm in a way that tends to catch people off guard. I don’t know if it was the grip or just the gesture, but something shifted in his face. A recalibration. He shook back. We talked. I asked if I could take his photo. He said yes.

That was the moment I understood what I was actually doing — and it had everything to do with people.

The difference between being looked at and being seen lives in whether you extend your hand. Whether you make contact before you make a request. Whether you are willing to be surprised by who shows up when you do.

I have been building a practice around that difference for fifteen years. Field Notes from the Work and the Wild is what it became.

Every session begins with one question: When do you feel most like yourself? The body answers before the words catch up. From that conversation — two, sometimes three hours inside it — three things emerge: a portrait, a Spoken Record told in my voice from the subject’s life, and a Frame that holds them together. A record that a person existed beyond what they produced, held complexity beyond what they performed, and mattered before anyone was watching.

Fifty sessions. Thirty-six Field Notes published. Two TED talks. A living archive growing since March 2025.

The first patron found me before I thought to ask. And what happened next is why I am writing this today.

How Field Notes Got Its First Patrons

It was October 2025. I was covered in thirty years of someone else’s dust.

We had just moved into our new place in the Bronx. Walls half-primed. Everything mid-becoming. My phone buzzed with an email from a woman named Juhi.

We had met for coffee three weeks earlier. Two women with squiggly careers, sitting across from each other at a table in Midtown, recognizing the invisible labor in each other before we even got to Field Notes. By the time I walked her through the work she already understood it. She had been living the thesis her entire career. She just hadn’t had words for it yet. Now she was writing to say she wanted to be a patron. She sent me money the next day — a decision that the work deserved to exist.

A few months later, the 5x5 Collective came in together. Then more than twenty people contributed what they could to a GoFundMe — some gave twenty dollars, some gave two hundred. Twenty people became paid Substack subscribers. None of them were asked to give a specific amount. All of them made the same decision: this matters, I want it to keep going, here is what I have.

That is a year of people deciding what deserves to exist. And it sits inside a much longer history of who gets to make that decision.

Patronage has belonged to the wealthy for most of recorded history. The Medicis funded Michelangelo. Robber barons built the concert halls. Foundation boards with their naming rights and their galas decided which archives survived and which ones vanished. The people with the most resources determined what the culture kept. Everyone else showed up to consume what had already been decided for them.

Field Notes is a practice built on the conviction that the choosing belongs to all of us.

Every session, every portrait, every Spoken Record is a decision to keep something the official story skips. The invisible labor. The permission moment. The human economy running beneath the one that gets measured. The NEA is being gutted. The Institute of Museum and Library Services — the agency that funds community archives, oral histories, and local memory projects across every state — was zeroed out. The Smithsonian is under pressure. The record of this moment is being actively shaped by people with the resources and the motive to shape it a certain way.

The record will look like them — unless we build something else.

What Field Notes Is Actually Building

Ursula K. Le Guin had a theory about tools. She said the first important human tool was the bag — something to carry things in. To gather, hold, bring home. Before the tool that forces energy outward, we made the tool that brings energy home.

A resume is a spear. Linear, pointed, built around a single outcome. It records what you produced and leaves everything else on the ground.

Field Notes is a bag. It holds what the resume drops: the years of preparation, the moments of permission, the invisible labor behind every visible result. Everything that made you who you are before anyone was watching.

This archive is that vessel. It carries the lineage of Studs Terkel, the WPA Federal Writers’ Project, and StoryCorps forward — at the exact moment that lineage is most urgent.

Your investment funds the archive itself. The body of work accumulating into something that will outlast this moment. The sessions that continue, the Spoken Records that get made, the portraits that go on the wall. The practitioners who will eventually carry this methodology into communities, organizations, and cities I will never personally reach. The institution Field Notes is becoming — one that exists beyond any single person’s labor, holds the human record with permanence, and grows for the next twenty years at minimum.

Beyond September: a Field School that trains practitioners to hold this methodology in new rooms. An annual gathering where everyone who has ever been part of the ecosystem comes home. A Human Record that becomes the documentary evidence of what it actually meant to be a person doing work in this time in history — the full record, complex and plural, kept the way Le Guin kept her carrier bag.

I gave back-to-back TEDx talks in February with a two-month-old at home. I came offstage knowing the work was real. I came home and kept going. That is what it means to decide that the human record matters enough to build it without waiting for permission or a paycheck. Someone has to do this work. If the people building the archive are only the ones with the most resources, we already know what gets kept. I am writing this on my birthday asking you to be part of what we keep instead.

Hi there,

Somewhere along the way you became the person who holds everything together, and everyone got so used to it that they forgot to check whether you were still in there.

You’re still in there. This is where I go looking.

Field Notes is a documentary practice. I sit with a person for two or three hours, camera up the whole time, and I ask about the stuff no one asks about. I skip the highlight reel and go straight for the permission moment nobody witnessed. The fear that shows up right before the thing that matters and then quietly never gets mentioned again. The parts of you that vanish inside competence and caregiving and being responsible, one reasonable decision at a time, until you look up and can’t find them.

Then I make you something out of it. Proof.

Each Field Note braids three things: portraits made while we talk, a Spoken Record — two or three hours of listening distilled into a five-to-ten-minute audio piece in my voice — and a written Frame that cracks open the work underneath the work.

Some of them are about other people. All of them are, somehow, about you. That’s the point.

Fifty-plus sessions in, across founders and artists and organizers and people carrying rooms so heavy they’ve forgotten what their arms feel like empty, the same thing keeps happening. Someone looks at the portrait before they hear a single word of the story, and they get it right. Every time. The image carries who you are before language shows up to explain it.

That’s the whole thesis.

The world keeps what you made. Field Notes keeps who you are.

More About Lindsey

I got my first camera at six and I have not put it down since. In art school I was walking through Chinatown asking strangers to let me photograph them — the ones the city had already decided to stop seeing. We looked at each other like it mattered, because it did. A man named Steve, who had almost nothing, handed me his watch. I still have it. I think about him all the time.

The right gesture of recognition unlocks a person. I learned that at six, holding a camera I could barely lift, and I’ve been chasing it ever since.

I’ve done this from a lot of angles — photographer, tour manager, founder, strategist — always looking for the thing sliding out of frame. Who someone actually is, underneath everything they’ve had to produce to be allowed in the room.

Fifteen years behind the scenes: hauling gear through venues on tour, building a coworking space for artists in Rhode Island, working as a community strategist across Los Angeles, London, New York, and Chicago, telling cities they were thinking about culture wrong.

I know exactly what it is to be the steady one. The person everyone calls. The one who makes it run. I was extremely good at it. I was also disappearing inside it, and almost nobody noticed, because the work looked fine.

I make this thing because I need it too. I’ve spent years handing other people the evidence that they exist, and I’m still learning to let someone hand it to me. That ache is the engine. I’m not going to pretend otherwise.

Two TEDx talks. A seat on Aperture’s Connect Council. Support from the Citizens NYC Neighborhood Grant and The Field. A house in the Bronx with my wife, my daughters, and a dog named Dino who contributes nothing and means everything.

You can build something that scales and still lose the thread.

Chris Fischer knows. He’s led product and engineering at nine startups, helped take companies public, and raised millions. He’s built teams that moved fast, shipped fast, and sometimes broke apart just as fast.
