Yes, kind of.

That’s the honest answer, and also the smallest possible one.

Two weeks ago I was in La Grande Motte, on the French coast, for the first time in years. My family spent summers there when I was a kid. Salt on everything. Pyramids on the skyline you stopped noticing after a while.

I went back at fifty-six. It undid me a little.

Jean Balladur built that town out of a stretch of marshland — mosquitoes, mudflats, nothing else — starting in 1965. Thirty years of his life. He shaped it as truncated pyramids, borrowed straight from Teotihuacan, because he believed a building could carry meaning before it ever sheltered anyone.

He wasn’t alone in that belief. Le Corbusier was doing the same thing in Chandigarh, out of nothing but a conviction and a system of proportions he’d invented himself. Lucio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer were doing it in Brasília, laying a capital into empty savanna in the shape of a bird. Three men. Three cities that didn’t exist until someone decided they should.

None of them built from what was already there. They built from a story. Most people watching at the time called it a utopia.

Standing in La Grande Motte, I recognized something I couldn’t have named as a kid: a building is never just a building. It organizes how people gather, trade, learn, work, believe in something. Architecture has always spoken in symbol and ritual, whether anyone in the room admits it or not. That’s the lens FieldWork runs on.

FieldWork will never be a city. But there’s no reason not to build it with the same intentions — inclusive, open, green, alive — just at the scale of a quarterly and the people who make it with us.

Here’s how it actually works.

First, the newspaper. A record of makers, told through the place that shaped them. Issue one, In Living Process, opened with Marcel Breuer’s houses hiding in the Connecticut woods, then followed Ian Ingersoll’s furniture shop, Charlie Dumais’s ceramics studio, and Belden House, an 1888 mansion pulled back into use with the signatures of its original carpenters still inside the walls. Share the story first.

Then, the trading post. A market — this time in Cornwall — where the story on the page becomes something you can stand in front of. It’s brief on purpose. It’s the handshake between the page and the object.

Then, the object. This time: AWO, Architectural Wearable Objects, made with Mena Henry and his team at PROPTOGROUP. Twelve pieces, brass and silver, each one hand-twisted, no two alike. It tracks nothing. Updates nothing. It is the opposite of everything a wearable is supposed to do in 2026 — on purpose.

Share the story. Trade the goods. Make the object. Then start again.

It’s not so different from what Balladur or Corbusier or Costa and Niemeyer were doing. Start with a conviction, not a site plan. Trust that if it’s built with care, people find their own reasons to gather there.

They built cities. We’re building a cycle small enough to fit on a market table, running on the same fuel: a story, told well, becomes a place worth showing up to.

So next time someone asks what FieldWork is, I have the whole answer now, not just the yes.

In 1831, a young Frenchman named Alexis de Tocqueville landed in America and started moving. Nine months. Steamboats, stagecoaches, horseback. He had come to study prisons. He ended up studying everything. The book he wrote, Democracy in America, is still how the country reads itself.

People call it the first American road trip. I like that. The foreigner arrives, looks hard, keeps moving, writes it down.

I made my own version. Paris, Amsterdam, London, New York. Then the road trip stopped, in the northwest corner of Connecticut, and it has not started again. I stayed. I married here. I photograph here. I publish a small newspaper here. This July 4, America turns 250, and I hold two passports and one address.

This week, everyone with a platform is giving a speech about America. What it means. Where it went wrong. Where it might still go. FieldWork will not be giving that speech. It is not what we do. We work at ground level — a greenhouse in early spring, a stone wall moved by frost, a pair of hands on work trousers. Process, not commentary.

But Tocqueville is worth remembering this weekend, and not for the big chapters. What impressed him most was small. The township. The habit of neighbors organizing themselves — a road to fix, a school to run, a hall to fill. He thought American democracy lived there, in rooms, among people who knew each other’s names. Not in speeches.

That, I understand. That, I can photograph.

Being an editor in a country you were not born in is a strange responsibility. Desired, felt, and a little feared. But there is a long line of Frenchmen who looked at America from one step outside and told it something true. I work at a much smaller scale — one region, one market, one issue at a time. The looking is the same. Maybe the looking is the belonging.

Tocqueville kept moving and went home. I stopped moving and was home. Two hundred and fifty years in, that still seems like the most American story there is: you arrive from somewhere else, you pay attention, and the place becomes yours.

These three images were made during the reporting. A tunnel greenhouse in early spring, the crops barely visible through condensation and wire — a world of growing that most people drive past without seeing. A stone wall in a Connecticut field, built by hand during and after the Revolution by people whose names nobody thought to write down, still standing, still being rearranged by frost every spring. A studio shelf in NY — thirty years of accumulated material, wax pieces that function as both tool and journal, nothing discarded, everything in conversation with everything else.

None of these are extraordinary places. That is the point.

The farmer, the wall-builder, the artist — they are not doing something remarkable in the way the word usually gets used. They are doing something consistent. Something patient. Something that requires showing up on a Tuesday when nobody is watching, because the field needs clearing or the palette needs heat or the frost has moved the stones again and the wall needs tending.

FieldWork exists because we find this kind of story genuinely useful. Not inspiring in the motivational sense — useful in the way a good meal is useful, or a long walk, or a conversation that doesn’t resolve into a conclusion. It steadies something. It reminds you that most of what matters gets made slowly, by hand, in ordinary time.

No credential that makes the stone wall more or less beautiful. The people in this issue are your neighbors — farmers, artists, ecologists, keepers of land. Their work is already around you, if you know where to look.

This is what we want to build here, in this space: not a following, but a community of people who find this kind of story as necessary as we do. People who want to make things, learn things, pass things on. People who believe, as we do, that paying attention to the ordinary is one of the most quietly radical acts available to us.

The image was captured in the town square of Lamu Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the oldest continuously inhabited Swahili settlement in East Africa. What drew me to this location wasn’t its historical designation or architectural significance, but something more fundamental: the way people still use this space to simply be with one another.

Connection, as a theme, can feel abstract until you watch it unfold in real time. In these images, the square becomes a stage where countless small acts of human engagement play out simultaneously. A vendor arranges goods under faded umbrellas. Men gather around makeshift tables, engaged in conversation or games. A woman in a pink hijab crosses the frame, perhaps heading home or meeting someone. A yellow bicycle waits. Storefronts with corrugated metal roofs frame scenes of commerce and rest. None of these moments was orchestrated—they simply existed in the same place, at the same time, creating a tapestry of interdependence.

What strikes me most about these scenes is how natural the connection happens when space allows for it. The square serves no single purpose; it’s simultaneously a marketplace, a meeting place, a thoroughfare, and a living room. This flexibility invites people to linger, to pause, to engage. The man seated alone at his table isn’t isolated—he’s part of a larger ecosystem of presence. The merchant under the umbrella isn’t just selling; she’s maintaining a post in the community’s daily rhythm.

I see the “many” connections we might easily overlook if we moved too quickly through the frame. The architectural layers—colonial-era buildings, traditional Swahili structures, improvised shelters—tell stories of adaptation and resilience across centuries. The variety of activities occurring simultaneously speaks to economic interdependence: one person’s livelihood depends on another’s presence, which depends on the square itself remaining accessible.

But there’s something more profound here that relates to our contemporary moment. We live in an age obsessed with connection, yet increasingly disconnected from physical place. We can reach anyone, anywhere, instantly—yet we’re losing the art of simply sharing space. Lamu’s town square offers an alternative model: connection as a byproduct of proximity, of shared infrastructure, of showing up in the same place regularly enough that relationships form organically.

The square hasn’t always served the community equally—it carries complicated histories of power and displacement. Yet these images capture something essential about human resilience: given space to gather, communities will rebuild the connections that sustain them. The vibrancy here isn’t manufactured or nostalgic—it’s evidence of people choosing, daily, to maintain the social fabric through small, ordinary interactions that accumulate into a community.

These photographs ask viewers to consider what makes connection possible. It’s not just technology or intention—it’s space, time, and the willingness to show up where others show up. Every hand cart, every conversation under an umbrella, every person crossing the square contributes to an infrastructure of belonging that’s as vital as water or electricity. The connections don’t need to be created—they need to be noticed, valued, and protected.

These photographs capture a single moment in Lamu’s centuries-long story, but they speak to something timeless: our fundamental need to gather, to see and be seen, to participate in the mundane miracle of shared existence. In a world that often feels fragmented, the square reminds us that connection isn’t something we’ve lost—it’s something we choose to create, every day, through the simple act of being present with others.

Fieldwork began as a newspaper for makers. Something you hold, fold, or leave open on a table. A refusal of the endless feed in favor of the kind of attention that only happens when you slow down.

The first issue was launched in October 2025. We called it “In Living Process”, and we grounded it in northwest Connecticut—a place where Marcel Breuer once brought bold modernism to rural tradition, where Victorian revival architecture sits alongside mid-century glass and stone.

We documented Charlie Dumais creating tactile ceramic lighting in a former carriage factory. Ian Ingersoll building Shaker-inspired furniture with 85 percent history and 15 percent intuition. Belden House, a restored 1888 mansion turned boutique hotel, where craftsmen’s signatures from the original builders emerged during renovation—hidden gifts inside the walls.

The through-line wasn’t nostalgia. It was Process. The intelligence that lives in hands, tools, and materials. The thousands of small decisions that transform an idea into form. Work that takes time. People who build with intention. Communities where making still matters.

Howard’s Bookstore sits on Main Street in Torrington, Connecticut, in a building that’s been many things. For decades, it was a shoe store. Before that, other businesses cycled through, each leaving its own mark on the bones of the place.

On August 19, 1955, the Naugatuck River flooded downtown Torrington. Water rose through Main Street, devastating ground-floor businesses. Howard’s was among them. The recovery has been slow, deliberate—shelves rebuilt, inventory salvaged, the work of starting over visible in every carefully placed stack of books.

The current owner, John Noelke, bought the building knowing its history. He kept the name. He kept the bones. And upstairs, in the rooms most people don’t see, he kept the ghosts of what came before.

I knocked because I wanted to see what was upstairs. That’s not entirely true. I wanted to see, but I also didn’t know if I’d be allowed. There’s always that gap between curiosity and permission.

Upstairs is a radio station that no longer broadcasts. Bowling lanes for practice. A drum set no one’s playing. Saddles from Texas, because John used to live there. What matters is that someone built a life in these rooms, then another person did, and now they’re quiet but not empty.

The light came through the windows in that mid-afternoon way that makes everything feel like a set. I thought: You could shoot a music video here. Or a fashion series.

John Noelke didn’t have to say yes. But he did, and because of that, I spent twenty minutes in rooms with saddles and drums and the memory of a radio station, imagining what could happen there. That’s fieldwork.
