Sara Jacobs has some thoughts on AI and how today’s breakthroughs can be wrangled to ensure our rights are still protected.

She’s introducing legislation that will codify how federal agencies can leverage existing laws when AI—and not a human—breaks them.

That’s been a sticking point for many law enforcement officials mainly because AI isn’t a person, but increasingly could make decisions like one, and those decisions could have serious consequences for many of us. One such example: if an algorithm for a rental screening company downgraded a qualified applicant from majority-Black or Hispanic zip codes, that may be in violation of the Fair Housing Act. (Jacobs’ bill would allow HUD to require landlords to test screening tools for discriminatory patterns before using them.)

While that’s just one use case, her bill also addresses how to protect Americans when an Al agent or platform discriminates against people in housing, health care, employment, criminal justice, and so on.

Jacobs is also introducing consumer privacy protections like finally closing the data broker loophole as the House takes up FISA reauthorization next week.

Sign Ups to Find Out Social Double in One Day.

This week, American Power co-host Matt Randolph (aka Mr. Global) encouraged his followers to join the app. He knows what we all do: That now is the time to divest from the big social networks because our attention is their oxygen.

What we saw the next day was truly inspiring. Find Out Social’s audience DOUBLED in a day.

Wow.

Unlike MAGA-pilled billionaires, we don’t want to build a social network just to appeal to advertisers or a shrinking user base.

Nope.

We want to create a purpose-driven online community that:

Doesn’t suppress links. If you include a link in a post, your followers will actually see it (the big social apps automatically downgrade posts with third-party links).

Has a zero-tolerance policy for threats of violence, hate speech or anything illegal. We are a “one strike and you’re out” platform when it comes to that nonsense.

Encourages conversations instead of rage or click bait. It’s beyond time that adults could once again have productive conversations about…whatever you want to talk about.

Breaks out feeds for specific topics. Our app has sections for everything most people are interested in like sports, food, culture, and more.

Is interested in the needs and wants of our community. If you see something that isn’t working or you have an idea for something you want to see? Unlike a billionaire, we actually care.

Uses open-source tools instead of a walled garden. We used well-established tools to build our app for the open social web (something called Mastodon) instead of private, proprietary, clunky technology so NO BILLIONAIRE CAN TOUCH US.

We hope you’ll all take some time to see that this isn’t just hype. Because Paxton, who has been impeached by the Republican Super Majority in the Texas state legislature for embezzlement, busted for an extramarital affair and is generally hated by Cornyn voters and his fellow Texas Republicans, this creates an excellent opportunity for State Rep. James Talarico (D-TX) to finally flip Texas Blue. The last time Texas Democrats came close to flipping this seat was in 2018 when U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) narrowly defeated Rep. Beto O'Rourke (D-TX) by 2.6%.

On this episode, we'll make the case for why someone like Paxton is worse than Cruz. Talarico's ability to communicate effectively with religious Christian voters, coupled with Hispanic and Latino voters turning on Trump in large numbers, makes this a must watch race that could help the Democrats win the U.S. Senate this year.

We'll also discuss why conviction is the best weapon for Democrats to counter Republican messaging when pitching massive changes like universal health care. We also enjoyed watching Chelsea Handler and Pete Davidson destroy Tony Hinchcliffe at the Netflix Roast of Kevin Hart. We also crack down on corporations using investments in AI data centers to justify mass layoffs but those investments haven't been paying off. Also, we'll highlight how the tech billionaires like Marc Andreessen, Peter Thiel and Elon Musk want cheaper workers while J.D. Vance and Stephen Miller want more white workers.

This Substack is reader-supported. Part of the so-called Tennessee Three, Pearson was famously forced to run for reelection after state GOP House leadership stripped him of his House seat (yep) when he and two of his fellow lawmakers stood up for gun rights advocates on the Tennessee House floor in 2023.

This month, the Tennessee legislature once again ripped voting rights away from Black districts, part of the overhaul of state maps in light of the SCOTUS gutting what was left of the Voting Rights Act. During the vote, he and his brother were detained by state troopers.

Once again, Pearson’s image became synonymous with resistance overnight.

No stranger to fighting, Pearson had already declared a House candidacy for a majority-Black Memphis district. He’s still running to represent the completely redrawn district, determined to retain power for Memphis constituents who are now in danger of being completely overtaken by GOP rule.

As protests (rightly!) roiled the South this weekend, it was the perfect time to sit down with him to have a wide ranging discussion about how we can create and forge a new era for civil rights.

This Substack is reader-supported. Kelly for quite literally doing his job. Kelly is again facing a round of—let’s be generous and call them—“investigations” from batshit crazy Hegseth.

This time, Hegseth is all wound up about Kelly’s comments about weapons stockpiles, comments that came directly from—fuck, you can’t make any of this shit up—Hegseth.

Yep.

Kelly is open and candid about how Hegseth’s attacks against him are truly an attack on all veterans, and how courts have been consistently ruling in his (Kelly’s) favor.

Have You Joined Find Out Social Yet?

Some of us are old enough to remember the web before the social media companies (and Big Tech) sliced it all up. Sure, you had to use a little bit of imagination to find your tribe. But before Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter: That’s exactly what we all did.

It was…fun.

It wasn’t bought and run by billionaires.

It was driven by user experiences that fueled a range of interests, discussions, and definitely didn’t include AI.

The web needs to return to its very human roots if it’s going to work for all of us again. It’s why we launched Find Out Social.

Download Find Out Social: Apple

Download Find Out Social: Google Play

The big social networks aren’t interested in protecting democracy. But you already know that or you wouldn’t be here. We hope you’ll take part in what is becoming a huge movement to build a future web that looks a little bit like what it used to be in the past.

In solidarity,

The Find Out Team

This Substack is reader-supported.
