A city devoted to hideous practices now stood at the precipice of its demise. The span of God’s divine forbearance had run its course and the time had come for Israel to bring down not only a city, but the scourge of a godless system.

The spiritual forces of evil were hiding in the shadows beyond the vault of human visibility, opposing God and His purposes. Jericho was the battlefield Israel could see. But Scripture reveals a spiritual opposition that operates beyond what human eyes can perceive—an enemy ever seeking to exploit the vulnerabilities of God’s people.

Israel’s army marches.

Seven times around the walls.

Trumpets sound.

Jericho falls.

Every last breath devoted to the unclean is destroyed as a city burns before them. Joshua’s fame spreads. The people rejoice.

Ai is scouted out—a town of few. Joshua sends 3,000. Thirty-six are killed. Devastated and bewildered, the commander tears his clothes and cries out,

“Alas, Sovereign Lord, why did you ever bring this people across the Jordan to deliver us into the hands of the Amorites to destroy us?”

Why indeed! The idea that God would bring overwhelming victory over a formidable opponent like Jericho, only to bring this humiliating defeat, was beyond belief—until God revealed the catalyst.

The addereth of a king imported from the powerful Kingdom of Shinar—a kingdom established in pride, founded on the defiant self-exaltation against the holy God of all—lay there among the ruins. This intricately embroidered tapestry in gold and silk threads—it was the modern equivalent of haute couture found only in Milan or Paris.1,2,3

One man, driven by lust, stood mesmerized. Never had he seen such glorious beauty. Did he wrap the mantle around his shoulders, sensing the power that once embodied this masterpiece of human wealth?

Sunlight flashed off the gold and silver bars further down. His eyes fixated as he imagined the wealth and power these items promised.

Captivated and trapped by his own desires. Would it be a stretch to think the same enemy who whispered to Eve in a garden long ago might have whispered here, diminishing the command, minimizing the offense?

“It’s just a coat. It’s just a little gold. No one will ever know, and it doesn’t hurt anyone.”

Quickly snatching the coat, he wrapped the gold and silver and rushed back to his tent. Unseen. Beneath the dirt, he buried a counterfeit crown. Confident he was safe. Hidden behind the darkness of his own greed.

Last week, we talked about preparation. This week, we are looking at who we are preparing to go to war against. Paul tells us,

“Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”
—Ephesians 6:11-12

War demands we understand our enemy. Paul understood this firsthand. He had repeated exposure to the Roman fighting force. Paul’s observations could have become the tactical backdrop to this part of his letter.

Becoming an elite fighting force didn’t just depend upon physical training, but upon patient gathering of information about the enemy. Historically, the Romans obsessively scrutinized everything they could learn about their enemies.4,5 They developed specialized reconnaissance units called Exploratores and Speculatores.

The Exploratores were scouts that mapped the terrain, located ambush sites and probed enemy lines to find precise vulnerabilities.6

Speculatores acted as undercover spies who blended into local populations and cities—gathering intelligence, questioning deserters, and learning the psychological state of the enemy king or general. No stone was left unturned.7

Paul lifts the veil on how the devil operates when he speaks of his schemes.

As a “general” of his own army, our enemy’s tactics look terrifyingly similar to those of the Romans.

The Greek word for scheme (methodeia) speaks of scheming, craftiness, and calculated or deceptive strategy. The picture this word paints for us is that of a strategic blueprint.8 In essence, he studies our habits, scouts our heart’s terrain, probes us for vulnerabilities in hopes of wiping us out. This is the enemy we are fighting against.

1 Peter 5:8 tells us to,

“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”

He is tactical, he is relentless, and he is determined.

Recognizing this, Paul instructs us on how to stand our ground. We are not fighting flesh and blood; we are fighting something much more sinister.

That brings us to Paul’s description of who this enemy is. He describes them as “rulers, authorities, powers of this dark world, and spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Scholars disagree about whether these terms are talking about distinct ranks. I am not going to spend time making claims about a spiritual hierarchy that is not clearly established in Scripture.

What is fascinating, though, is what Paul is revealing. He exposes the fact that we are up against an organized, fearsome and non-human opposition.

Notice how Paul uses the word “against” four times when listing our opposition. He says our struggle is

… against rulers,

… against authorities,

… against powers of this dark world,

… against spiritual forces of evil.

Why is he laying it out this way? It seems he is almost stacking the enemy right before our eyes. He is clarifying the intensity of the fight in front of us and then tells us how to stand against him.

“Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.”

First, Paul tells us to put on the full armor of God. Not just one or two pieces, but every piece. We can’t win a battle with just a helmet and a pair of good shoes. We must be fully equipped for when the day of evil comes. And when it does, it’s the armor that gives us the ability to stand and not crumble beneath it.

Then Paul speaks of standing. This word is the kind of posture a soldier takes on the battlefield where he refuses to yield ground, where he refuses to retreat. He stands, immovable.

I love how Paul ends this verse. He tacks on the phrase “and after having done everything, to stand.” The picture here is one of a soldier, after having executed every defensive maneuver, fought through every wave of attack, and done everything required of a soldier in battle, he is still standing. The battle is over, the smoke has cleared, and there he is. Standing.

Paul is not giving us a watered down version of some cartoon character. Instead, he is giving us the sobering reminder of who we are fighting. But, he doesn’t leave us there. He shows us how we can stand against him victoriously.

By putting on the full armor of God.

The day had been busier than normal with many coming in and out to hear Paul preach. As the sun set and the last few stragglers closed the door behind them, we can picture Paul sitting down. He could hear the freight wagons by now, their iron-rimmed wooden wheels thundering over the stone pavers outside his cenaculum. Voices echoed as cart drivers yelled at the oxen stuck on the road. Whips cracked. Oxen snorted as they pulled on the thick leather and timber yokes.

Nighttime had its own rhythm and chorus.

This was his home—for now.

Paul had been working on his letter. He was nearly done, but one last thought was churning over in his mind. It isn’t hard to imagine how living shackled to Roman soldiers month after month would spark his curiosity.

Who was this soldier?

What kind of battles had he witnessed?

How much blood had he shed?

Those thoughts lingered until he began to settle on the man’s armor.

He understood the intimidation these soldiers projected. It wasn’t only their unyielding power—their armor was the sharp punctuation of that power. As this trained soldier stood up to walk, the abrasive bite of the iron hobnails scraped across the terracotta tile, echoing sharply across the plaster walls. From his belt, the heavy brass plates and weighted metal terminals jangled into a harsh metallic clatter. Paul would have easily recognized how an enemy combatant would shrink back from the threat that sounded at each footstep.

Perhaps in a moment like this, Paul found the final truth he wanted to convey to the churches. God had brought a vision of battle in the spiritual realm, and the entirety of this soldier’s presence was the picture.

Having lived his entire life under Roman rule, along with his extensive travels throughout the empire, Paul was well acquainted with the rigorous conditioning these soldiers endured. Perhaps his observations became God’s avenue of revelation.

Soldiers in training endured intense tests of physical strength. No man on day one could become the soldier who marched 20 miles in full gear carrying 60 pounds of equipment. A raw recruit would be incapable of wielding wooden swords and shields weighing twice as much as those carried into battle.1 They were conditioned long before they ever stepped onto a real battlefield. That conditioning would have caught Paul’s attention. Imagine Paul turning from the window to his scribe, declaring, “Write this down.”

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.”

Most overlook this verse and jump straight ahead to putting on “the full armor of God,” eager for the battle. But in doing so, we become the recruit on day one faltering as we try to carry extreme loads for miles or wield heavy weighted swords we have no capacity to wield. Paul understood this truth. What does he say here?

“Finally!”

Everything Paul had written culminated in this one place. After all the teaching about who we are in Christ, how the church is one body, and how we walk in unity, now we were ready—finally.

“Be strong!”

This word (endynamousthe) is a command, but it is a passive imperative. In other words, Paul isn’t saying, “Get some strength!” No! He is telling us to “be strengthened” as opposed to “strengthen yourself!” He wants us to be continually filled with power. The imperative may be passive, but the conditioning is not. Paul is instructing us to open ourselves up daily to be strengthened by Him, which is underscored by the remaining part of the command:

“… in the Lord and in His mighty power.”

This is not human strength we’re talking about. It is a strength that flows through abiding in Christ, our Source. This contrasts directly with the temptation of self-effort, because our default inclination is to rely upon our own power. But the true soldier of Christ learns to surrender self-reliance and lean entirely on Christ. This is the dividing line between a young Christian just stepping into the training room and the one conditioned to carry weights that defy reality.

Paul likely observed another critical layer in their preparation: these men underwent intense psychological conditioning as well. The drills taught them how to react in real time by exposing them to deafening shouting, crashing weapons, and chaotic dust clouds. These training drills were so rigorous that “disorder could not break their regularity, fear could not frighten them out of it, and labor could not exhaust them.”2

It is no accident that “Fear not” is one of the most frequent commands in the entire Bible. God wants us to know how to stand against fear. He commands us again and again:

“Fear not …”

This is not a suggestion—it is a tactical command. But obeying it takes training. It takes meditation. It takes prayer. It takes deep trust in God, grounded in what is tagged onto the end of those commands:

“… for I am with you” (Isaiah 41:10);

“… for I have redeemed you” (Isaiah 43:1);

“… for the Lord your God goes with you” (Deuteronomy 31:6).

Part of our core conditioning must include learning how to disarm fear before the battle begins.

But, the psychological training went even beyond conquering fear. These soldiers were drilled to believe in their unit’s absolute invincibility over any opponent. They were drilled to see themselves as part of an unstoppable, professional machine that no enemy could withstand.3

Now, as believers, we don’t take that to mean that our boast is in our own strength. What we must understand and believe beyond all else is that Christ has won complete victory over all the power of the enemy. Our minds must be so fully renewed that we are convinced nothing stands outside the realm of Christ’s achievement. We don’t have to freeze or become paralyzed in the face of an attack, because we know how the story ends. Colossians 2:15 tells us:

“And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.”

Finally, Paul would have understood this crucial reality: The unit was everything. Individual heroism had no place in a Roman legion; their effectiveness relied on absolute cohesion. A legionary’s shield was not used merely to protect himself; Roman infantry depended upon men standing together in close formation. When standing side by side, their curved scuta formed a moving wall of iron and wood. To step out of formation or abandon your post exposed not only yourself, but the brother standing at your side.4

What a sobering picture of how God calls His church to stand: not as isolated heroes fighting lonely battles, but as a conditioned unit standing shoulder-to-shoulder against the enemy forces.

Practically speaking, what does this look like for us today?

• It looks like daily repetition: Building spiritual muscle memory through daily Scripture meditation is imperative so that when the storms rage, you intuitively engage God’s promises, not terror.

• It looks like mental discipline: This means taking captive any fearful and intrusive thoughts through prayer. Dedicated prayer becomes the avenue through which we shut down the lies of the enemy, tear down strongholds, and cast down arguments.

• It looks like showing up in community: Refusing to be a “solo soldier” by actively reaching out to your brothers and sisters in Christ keeps us safe when the storms arrive.

Paul didn’t just write about spiritual discipline—he lived it. He understood what it meant to be spiritually prepared. He practiced daily, intentional discipline. Look at what he had written to the church in Corinth.

“Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.” (1 Corinthians 9:26–27)

Does Paul tell us to put on the full armor of God? Yes! He wants us to take up every piece, but first we must submit to the disciplines of daily training. The armor is waiting for us. Christ already won the battle. But the question remains—are we letting Him condition our hearts to stand?

There have been times in my life where sadness or anger, self-pity or bitterness had anchored my heart in deep, dark waters. Times when I was taken by surprise by the way someone treated me or spoke to me. It hurts to be the object of someone’s careless words and actions.

But, how does God call us to respond?

Something my husband always says when we’re counseling others is, “Your response is your responsibility.” That is so true. We must be responsible with our reactions. Pain is real! It can cause us to stagger, especially if the pain has been inflicted by someone we love.

Hebrews 12:15 tells us,
“See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no ‘root of bitterness’ springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled.”

This verse is pointing to an unhealed hurt, resentment, rebellion, or a turning away from God’s grace. Note how the author calls it a “root.” Roots grow underground where we can’t see them, but soon enough it becomes the very plant that trips up and defiles many.

The two Greek words used here for trouble (enochleo) and defiled (miaino) work together to build a picture of how bitterness works.

• Trouble means a crowd, chaotic throng, or tumultuous mob. In the Christian setting, it creates agitation within peaceful settings, stirring up drama, and breaking down relationships.

• Defile in the Greek (miaino) means to stain, dye, or color with a different tint. In a metaphorical sense, it speaks of becoming morally contaminated.

Bitterness is not something that stays self-contained; rather, it becomes a contagion that infects everyone it touches. The trouble shows up practically in gossip or factions. Soon, a community becomes divided, relationships are fractured, and peace is exchanged for arguments. These very things become the moral contaminants that defile and can utterly rupture a church.

What I find so interesting here is where this command lands in the chapter. Hebrews 12 opens with the metaphor of a race. We are encouraged to throw off the sin that so easily besets us. Another very interesting Greek word steps in here: euperistatos. This word is found nowhere else in the Bible. In ancient Greek races, an opponent wouldn’t be fixed simply on running their own race. They would be looking for an opportunity to actively try to cross into your lane, box you in, and thwart you in every direction. So, when the author used this particular word, he wasn’t speaking of some small mistake, but of tactical, encircling traps designed to box you in, trip you up, and cut off your spiritual momentum.

This is exactly where the trap is sprung. When someone hurts or disappoints us, the enemy acts as that opposing runner. He tries to cross into our lane, weaponize our pain, and plant a hidden “root of bitterness” while we are reeling. He wants us to believe that holding onto resentment is our only defense. But how we respond in that exact moment determines whether we get tripped by the trap, or step into the Father’s training ground.

In the very next verses, the author shifts our focus to God’s ultimate counter-strategy:

“Endure hardship as discipline.”

The pain that comes through relationships is not the discipline the author is talking about. He is speaking about our responses. God wants to discipline us to respond with peace and righteousness. That is hard when you’ve been hurt. It requires a surrendering of your rights. Response is not wrong. Retaliation is.

When we retaliate, we become exactly like the opponent who tripped us up in the first place. But when we surrender our rights and choose God’s grace, we disrupt the enemy’s trap. We stop the infection before it starts, turning a tactical obstacle into the peaceful fruit of righteousness.

Reflection Questions

1. Identifying the Weight: What raw hurt, disappointment, or careless word are you currently tempted to wallow in today?

2. Recognizing the Trap: In what ways is the enemy trying to use that specific pain as an encircling trap to box you in or cut off your spiritual momentum?

3. Tracking the Contagion: Is your response to that hurt threatening to spill over into gossip, drama, or fractures in your relationships or church community?

4. Submitting to the Coach: How can you step out of retaliation today, choose God’s grace, and allow the Father to train you toward a response of peace?

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses,
let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles.
And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,
fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith …
Endure hardship as discipline;
God is treating you as his children.
For what children are not disciplined by their father? …
No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful.
Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace
for those who have been trained by it …
Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy;
without holiness no one will see the Lord.
See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God
and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.”

lest by any means, after I have preached to others,

When I was 40, I started strength training regularly. It became an obsession. I watched my body change and the closer I came to “perfection,” the more obsessed I became with pushing myself.

I literally beat my body into subjection.

The word in the Greek (hypopiazo) means:

“to make a slave and to treat as a slave with severity, subject to stern and rigid discipline.”

My body became my slave. I sought out the toughest trainers and worked the hardest. Trainers loved me because I would do what most wouldn’t. I ate perfectly and I trained with extreme intensity. After about a year and a half I had whittled down to about 12% body fat and was shredded. I even studied to become a personal trainer.

I stayed in that shape for a few years, but then something happened.

One Christmas, I gave myself permission to indulge. I felt I deserved it. After all, I hadn’t indulged in probably three years. What harm could come from enjoying Christmas dinner and dessert for one day?

But that day turned to a week then into a month. Soon, I had lost all control and the willpower to reign it back in.

Why?

Because I was trying with all my willpower to be something I thought I wanted. But, somewhere deep down, I had gotten to the point where willpower had run its course. I still wanted the results, but I was too tired and worn out to keep doing the work.

The Vanity Trap

Here’s the rub. I know many people who “beat their bodies into subjection” for years. They do it because they want to be healthy. They do it because they know building muscle can sustain them over the years.

Why did I do it?

Aesthetics. It’s the truth. I didn’t love the health aspect of it. I wasn’t addicted to the fact that if I kept my body in shape, if I ate well, it would serve me through the years. Nope. I did it because I liked how I looked.

That motivation is what separated me from the those who lived the lifestyle.

I realized my fitness journey failed because I was worshiping the temple instead of the God who built it.

And if we aren’t careful, we bring that exact same willpower-first performance mindset into our faith.

Running on Empty

Like Paul, we may try and discipline our bodies to keep them under control, but somewhere along the line, we get caught off guard by a temptation. Or we give into laziness, and suddenly we’re not praying or reading the Bible.

What happened?

We want the results of a strong Christian walk, but we are exhausted from trying to manufacture the work.

The difference between my fitness story and Paul’s ministry is that Paul submitted to the Spirit. We can only exercise so much willpower before our human efforts eventually crumble. Willpower alone may keep us on track for a while—especially in the beginning when adrenaline is at its peak. We’re seeing change. We’re excited. Others are noticing something in us.

I loved building my body in the beginning because I would look in the mirror and see those changes happening. People noticed. My coaches were impressed. It felt amazing!

But, as time goes on, the adrenaline wanes. Soon, we’re barely chugging along because the gas tank is on empty. When the initial changes become normal and everyone moves on to the next big thing, we have to decide if we have what it takes within our own strength to keep going.

I lost the fire. And as Christians, we can lose the fire too. Without the Holy Spirit to keep us filled up, we have nothing to push us through in those moments.

Self-Effort vs. Spirit-Led Discipline

Yielding to the Holy Spirit rather than upon our own strength is not easy. It takes deep humility to admit that we cannot live a godly life on our own. Paul warns us in Galatians that we must walk in the Spirit so that we don’t fulfill the lust of the flesh.

In my own story, my obsession with aesthetics was a desire of the flesh. I was trying to attain a level of perfection powered entirely by my own ego.

So, here’s the question: When Paul says, “I discipline my body and keep it under control,” isn’t that just self-effort?

No—because there is a world of difference between worshipping the body and subjugating it.

• Self-effort uses human willpower to build up the self.

• Spirit-led discipline uses God-given grace to tear down self-reliance.

Paul didn’t beat his body to earn a trophy or impress trainers; he disciplined his physical appetites so his body wouldn’t hijack his spiritual mission.

Self-effort says, “Look at what my strength built.”

Spirit-led discipline says, “I surrender my body as an instrument for God’s glory, powered by His Spirit.”

Performance takes precedence when we rely on ourselves. Reliance takes precedence when we yield to Him.

What it Means to be “Disqualified”

Notice what Paul says. He said, “… lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.”

This is hugely important. His reason for discipline was that he didn’t want to be disqualified while preaching to others.

That word, disqualified in the Greek (adokimos) speaks of being tested and found unfit, useless or disqualified.

• In metallurgy: It referred to a coin or metal that was tested and found to be impure, a counterfeit, or flawed. It would then be set aside as useless for trading.

• In the ancient games: It referred to the athlete who either cheated, failed to train according to the rules, or stepped out of bounds during the race. That athlete was declared to be adokimos—disqualified from receiving a reward or trophy.

In my fitness journey, I was terrified of being disqualified as well. To me, being “disqualified” meant gaining fat or disappointing my trainer. Beating my body was tied to a core belief that my value was tethered to my performance.

Carrying that mindset into our faith turns grace into a spiritual treadmill. Our thought process leans on white-knuckled effort toward godliness just to maintain God’s favor.

The lie that blinded me was thinking that self-effort disciplines the body for God. The truth is: Self-effort disciplines the body to protect our pride; Spirit-led discipline yields the body to protect our integrity.

Paul wasn’t trying to earn his qualification through sheer willpower—he understood that he was not competent in himself to claim anything for himself. His competence was found solely in God (2 Corinthians 3:5).

Why did Paul discipline his body? He didn’t want his physical desires to sabotage the Gospel message he was called to preach.

When you run on willpower, a single slip up feels like total disqualification. But when you walk in the Spirit, stumbles aren’t the end of the race—they are simply reminders to stop running in our own strength and start leaning on His.

"The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him;
though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand.”
—Psalm 37:23-24

Moses felt his body beginning to give out as he laid the final piece of heavy jagged limestone over his sister’s burial mound. His hands were raw, caked over with chalky dust. Just hours ago, women from the camp had carried small clay jars filled with their last bit of water to cleanse her body. Before lowering her into the ground, he looked one last time at her linen-wrapped face—the woman who had whisked him out from among the Nile reeds. Because of her, he lived. Because of her, he knew his mother.

The sound of weeping could still be heard across the white canyon walls as He gathered up the picks and wooden spades to bring back to camp.

Returning to his tent, he felt the weight hit him: burying Miriam left him ceremonially unclean for seven days. He not only felt the ripping away of his sister, he felt the devastating separation from the sanctuary where he longed to seek God’s comfort. Dimming the lamp in his tent, Moses laid his exhausted body down upon layers of sheepskin, but sleep fled from his eyes. The maniacal cackling of hyenas and frantic, yipping wails of jackals shrilled through the canyons. Pulling his cloak up over his aching body, he prayed the stones would insulate his sister from their insatiable hunger.

Morning’s blistering heat scorched Moses as he stepped outside his tent. His tongue was like sand in his mouth. Cracked skin had covered his hands and lips. A desperate mob had already crowded around his doorway as the heat radiated off their unwashed, sweat-soaked wool garments. The smell of sour sweat and sheep manure hung in the air.

The men were thrusting heavy wooden shepherd’s crooks into the air, their bloodshot eyes just as sleep-deprived and thirsty as his own. Women held their limp, quiet babies, screaming for water, while the men were yelling, pointing to their livestock as they collapsed across the dusty floor.

“Why did you bring us out of Egypt to die in this evil place?”1

Moses tried to interject, but his raspy, dry voice couldn’t compete with the deafening, rhythmic surge of noise bouncing off the limestone bluffs of Kadesh. Grieving, hollowed out, and feeling the uncleanness that covered him after touching death, his eighty-year-old body stood there shaking before a people utterly indifferent to his pain. Terrifying thirst had rewritten their story—he was no longer their grieving leader, but a man who dragged them out to die beside Miriam.

Desperate, Moses and Aaron fled to the Tent of Meeting where they fell on their faces before the Lord. The glory of the Lord appeared, giving them a clear command: take the staff, assemble the congregation, and speak to the rock at Meribah, telling it to bring forth water.2

Once the camp was assembled and they were standing before the rock, the dam broke. Grief, exhaustion, and provocation boiled over into sudden rage.

“Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?”3

Moses turned with fury and struck the rock—twice. Water gushed out, but God was grieved. Moses was barred from entering the promised land.

“Because you did not believe in me, to uphold me as holy in the eyes of the people of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land that I have given them.”4

Numbers 20 shows a man lashing out with his voice and staff. But Psalm 106:32-33 exposes what was happening beneath the surface.

“… they provoked his spirit, and he spoke rashly with his lips.”

As we round out our series on the Fruit of the Spirit, we arrive at the final fruit—self-control. In the Greek (enkrateia), it means “dominion within” or “self mastery.” This is not white-knuckled emotional restraint, but Spirit-enabled self-mastery that aligns our impulses with God’s will.

Proverbs 25:28 warns, “A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.”

Proverbs helps to carry over the imagery of our series where self-control represents the stone wall (ma’tsar in Hebrew) built around a vineyard to guard the tender fruit from wild beasts and the little foxes that would spoil it.5

Moses’ wall of self-control broke that day at Meribah under the weight of grief and mob pressure. He stepped outside Spirit-led restraint, misrepresenting God as harsh and erratic rather than merciful and faithful.

Meribah was not the first time God used Moses to bring forth water from a rock. In Exodus 17 at Horeb, God told Moses to strike the rock. But, here at Meribah, Moses was told only to speak to it. We see from Scripture that the Rock was Christ.6 He needed only to be struck (crucified) once for all time.7 From His pierced side flowed the water of life.8 By striking the rock a second time, Moses fractured the prophetic picture of the gospel.

As I step into the season of pain and frustration in my own marriage, I remember how the emotional walls (ma’tsar) meant to protect our hearts had been severely breached. Just like the crowd at Moses’ tent, we stood there waving our staves at each other, shouting and “striking” each other with harsh words and accusations rather than speaking in gentleness and peace. We had poisoned the wells of our hearts, replacing refreshing grace with the bitter dust of our own wrath. Worse yet, we were misrepresenting Christ to one another.

But, as we have seen over the last weeks, the Holy Spirit had begun His deep work in us:

• God had rooted and grounded us in His love.

• Joy helped us see the sun beyond the dirt to the joy set before us.

• Peace bound us to the Prince of Peace as we dropped our need for control.

• Longsuffering helped us grow through the dirt to get to the other side as we exercised the long nose of patience.

• Kindness aerated the soil so grace could move.

• Goodness exposed the manure, turning it into the very fertilizer that brought truth back to our relationship.

• Faithfulness helped us withstand the storms by producing that flexible reaction wood.

• Gentleness brought our “power” under Spirit-led control as we allowed God to prune away those sucker shoots of frantic, self-protective overgrowths.

• And, finally, self-control was rebuilt as a wall of protection.

When self-control is exercised in moments of marital tension, you become a conduit of living water. You allow the Holy Spirit to pour refreshing, life-giving grace directly into your spouse’s dry, parched soul. Gentleness replaces harshness. Grace replaces judgment. Humility replaces pride.

And notice how Paul ends his teaching. He declares, “Against such there is no law.”9 Why? Because law demands human effort that leads to failure or death, but the Spirit produces life. As His fruit matures within us—from love and joy all the way to self-control—grace begins to flow naturally. This doesn’t mean we will be perfect or never lose our temper. It simply means we have surrendered our hearts to the Faithful Farmer, trusting Him to cultivate—and prune—a vineyard that yields life.

Who Is Your Enemy?

A seemingly contradictory message between the Old and New Testament is dismantled as Dinah Dye reveals the truth behind the message. Moses warned Israel to drive out the idols of the Canaanite nations. Jesus, on the other hand, commands us to love our enemies while protecting the threat to our heart. The core threat has always been spiritual corruption—the “Trojan horse” idols of pride, bitterness, and compromise that slip past our guard. Today, we shift our perspective away from fighting the political, social, or personal adversaries of flesh and blood without while guarding the gates of our own souls from the evil seeking to distort God’s image within.

The Lion’s Den Did Not Get the Last Word

FAITHFUL RECOVERY

A powerful reflection on Daniel’s relentless faith despite the threat of a den of lions and Christ’s silent surrender before the cross, reveals how complete obedience in hostile situations paves the way for God’s ultimate deliverance.

Jesus called us the “salt of the earth.” Notice that in the metaphor, Jesus doesn’t call us to become salt, but that we are salt. As such, salt doesn’t try to become sugar just to please the table—it simply preserves and stays faithful to its purpose. The essay reminds us that we can rest in Christ’s settled approval of who we are. Therefore, we can set aside the energy we might otherwise expend defending ourselves or trying to reshape our identities to satisfy the critics. Instead, she challenges us to allow His voice to remain the loudest narrative in our lives.

Who Are You Without the Suit?

An engaging, deeply relatable reflection inspired by the popular Spider-Man and Scripture to challenge how our self-worth becomes entangled with and tied to our productivity, titles, and accomplishments—inviting us to work from our identity in Christ rather than striving to earn one.

His connection to that identity came before any miracle was done or act of ministry was performed. He lived from His identity rather than for an identity. Instead, we are able to stand confidently in the identity God has given us.

I filled the growing void with anything that could medicate the pain—alcohol, drugs, and the hollow company of faceless people.

I remember the day I confronted the hard, dusty floor of my cave.

The high was wearing off as I pulled into the driveway. I sat there for a minute as the engine turned off. A smell of smoke and regret hung in the air. My eyes focused on this stupid button that I had hanging from the vent. It was a button I’d had for as long as I could remember. Maybe I let it stay there as some kind of reminder. I honestly don’t know. Rust was beginning to eat away at the edges, and the words were beginning to fade.

“I LOVE JESUS!”

The words were pulsating in my head in a steady rhythm that matched my heartbeat. I thought about the weekends I could barely remember and the drug-induced insanity that mortified me in that moment. Out of nowhere, a dam broke. I grabbed that rusted old button as tears started to form. I wasn’t angry. I was just so sad. I did love Him! I prayed the kind of deep, guttural prayer that had no words. How long I sat there, I couldn’t say. But I know I was exhausted.

As I opened the car door—the door of my cave, I felt so light. I felt seen. God had met me! I walked up the long, stony driveway to the house. The air felt cool against my face. It was time to leave this place and find my way back home. Home to a place where innocence sat with a little Bible story booklet, her tiny voice praying for God to save her. That night, God answered her prayer. But there was still more work to be done.

What I felt that night was release for the first time in a long time. It was real, and it was potent, so potent that I went to work the next day and quit my job. I felt a new person had entered the room. The strength of that moment was palpable, and that’s what can be strangely deceptive. It’s true that everything in me felt fresh the day I left that cave. But beneath the surface, deep grooves still lived. They still lingered. Our autopilots may hide for a bit, but if we don’t directly deal with them, they will find a way to drive again.

In moments of deep spiritual experience, there is a sense that you’ve taken flight. At some point, though, we land back on the craggy mountains of conflict. “I thought I killed that thing!” The grooves are still there. Autopilot comes back online.

PHASE: A temporary state or behavioral pattern in a person's life.

I immediately thought of what we say about our kids and the various stages they go through.

“Oh, it’s just a phase!”

The “goth” phase (IYKYK), the anger phase, rebellious phase and on and on it goes.

As I began to reflect upon the phases of my daughter’s adolescence, I started to recognize that maybe they weren’t phases. Maybe they were layers.

Layers of pain.

Layers of fear.

Layers of sadness.

In the middle of my children’s young lives, my husband and I were going through our own phase. 

That phase held our focus.

It held our full attention.

It kept us pre-occupied.

The pain we were grappling with made it difficult to see past the moment.

We lost sight of what was happening in the lives of our children.

Their pain was too much. “It’s just a phase.”

Their struggles were too much. “Oh, it’s just a phase.”

What were we saying? 

They’ll figure it out.

They’ll grow out of it.

It’s just what kids do. 

We anesthetized their pain because we couldn’t anesthetize our own.

The sad reality was that my oldest wasn’t going through a phase.  She was crying out for help.  She was searching for a safe place to land and finding none.

Even as I write this, my heart breaks.

Pain had a way of keeping us from seeing beyond ourselves. And sadly as parents, we don’t have the luxury of caring solely for ourselves. There are little humans watching us, needing us, learning life from us. But …

What do you do when your adult life is falling apart? 

How do you keep your children’s from falling apart?

First, honesty!  Kids know!  They can sense when things are not right. They feel it in their bones and it can be so scary. Telling them, “Nothing’s wrong!” is not the answer. But telling them, “Mommy and daddy are working through some things, but we are going to be alright” will help them understand that conflict happens. It doesn’t mean everything is broken.

Second, learn to say, “I’m sorry.” This is big.  If an argument has erupted in front of them, acknowledge it.  Then apologize for scaring them. 

Did you raise your voices with each other?

Say unkind words to each other?

Don’t only apologize to your spouse, but apologize to your children for speaking in an unkind way to their father or mother.  Let them know that is not acceptable and you are praying for God to help you with self-control.

Lastly, if things have reached an impasse between you and your spouse, seek out Godly counsel. Bring your children as well.  Maybe not to every session, but give them the same space you’ve given each other to work through their own pain.

My husband and I learned these lessons after much damage was done.  We did bring our children with us to counseling and have been able to work through a lot. But, something I have realized is this. 

God is the healer of the broken hearted and He will bind up our wounds. 

But, not every story will have a happy ending especially the longer pain has lingered.

Things said cannot be unsaid. 

What was done cannot be undone.

Consequences do take their course.

But, we all have choices. 

Choices to forgive.

Choices to love.

Choices to get help.

Choices to lean on God.

I thank God that He has done an amazing work of restoration in our family. 

Is it perfect? No. 

Are we all “pain free?”  No. 

But, we are walking our journey with eyes set on Him, the author and finisher of our faith. And one thing I am sure of is this …

He who began a good work will complete it (Philippians 1:6). 

And that is not a phase!

He and his men had been at it for hours through the bone-chilling cold that had seeped into their knuckles and joints. It was the same thick cold that was slowly enveloping his heart.

Only days earlier, this same man who swore he would die for Jesus sat in the courtyard after His capture.

The fire.

The servant girl.

Three denials - each one more adamant than the previous.

The crow of a rooster.

Peter — Rock. Jesus gave him that name. Some rock. This rock had been catapulting down the side of a mountain of guilt now for several agonizing days. Peter had seen Him a couple of times, but words were never exchanged. What else was left for him but to do what he knew — fish. This was familiar.

The pungent stench of old seaweed and damp wood hovered above them. He walked gingerly across the slick deck, saturated with the morning dew and dotted with slimy, empty scaling baskets. Every hour, the heavy twine dripped uselessly in the bilge.

Looking out to the shoreline, it was lost in the ghostly mist swallowing the horizon. Standing there exhausted with his men, all they could hear was the rhythmic slapping of water against the weather-beaten wood. Everything in him felt as stagnant as the slop of flax laying on the torn up timber.

Rays of sun began peaking across the horizon dispelling the mist. Peter looked out. The silhouette of a man was walking towards them on the beach. He yelled out, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”

“No!” they shouted back, voices flat with exhaustion.

“Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.”

It was an absurd directive to a crew of professional fishermen who had dragged the depths all night. Yet, something in the stranger’s voice carried an odd weight. They cast the net. Suddenly, the timber groaned under the weight of a thrashing surge of life.

Peter froze. The raw flax slipped through his bleeding fingers. He had lived this exact moment before. Three years ago, on this same lake, an empty night had been answered by a bursting net.

The stranger wasn’t a stranger.

In an instant, Peter was in the water, scrambling toward the shore. But as his feet hit the wet sand and he approached the warmth of a charcoal fire, a sense of hesitancy most likely gripped him.

What would He say?

Why was He here?

There he sat — the risen King. Jesus possessed all authority in heaven and on earth. He had conquered death itself. He held the ultimate moral leverage, the absolute right to demand an accounting. He had every right to look at Peter—the man who had cursed his name to save his own skin—and demand a defense. He could have crushed Peter with a single, righteous sentence.

Instead, Jesus cooked him breakfast.

He sat with him.

Spoke with him.

Reached across to bridge the gap.

Power Under Control

In Galatians 5, when the Apostle Paul lists gentleness as a fruit of the Spirit, he uses the Greek word prautēs.

In the ancient world, this word was used to describe a wild stallion that had been thoroughly trained by a master. The horse had not lost its speed, its fierce spirit, or its immense physical strength; rather, its massive power had been brought under total submission to the rider’s will.

It was power under control.

Jesus on that beach is the ultimate portrait of prautēs. He possessed infinite power, yet He chose to hold it back. He didn’t use His leverage to humiliate Peter or to force a groveling apology.

Instead, He used a familiar miracle to gently whisper: “Hey, it’s me. Remember your friend? Remember who we are to each other?”

By setting the exact same stage as their first meeting, and building a charcoal fire to heal the memory of the fire where Peter denied Him, Jesus met Peter’s raw, shattered soul with absolute tenderness. He didn’t break a bruised reed. He didn’t extinguish a smoldering wick. He restrained His power to execute judgment so He could use His power to restore.

Setting Down the Leverage

There we sat, trying to unravel years of brokenness and pain. For so long we had become experts at holding “leverage.” It’s the kind of leverage that relies on a catalog of past failures. We knew each other for so long and understood the triggers. We were privy to each other’s deepest insecurities. It would be easy to use what we knew — the perfect, devastating comebacks that could cut each other down to the ground in a second. In any given argument, we held the “blades.”

When the Holy Spirit began the work of healing us, the hardest part wasn’t learning how to apologize; it was learning the restraint of prautēs.

It was the moment I realized that even when I was “right” in an argument—even when I held the moral leverage to prove my case and make him feel the weight of his mistakes—I had to actively choose to lay the blade down.

Gentleness in a healing marriage is looking at the person who has hurt you, recognizing how incredibly fragile they are under their defenses, and choosing to hold back your power to crush them.

It is the Holy Spirit steadying your hand and whispering to your angry heart: “Put down the blade. Sit with them instead.”

We had to stop using our history as weapons. We had to stand on the shore of our own wreckage, look at each other through the raw exhaustion of our survival, and let the gentleness of God recreate our first connection. We had to remind each other: “Hey, it’s me. Remember your friend?”

It takes massive, rugged strength to be that soft. But it is the only way a shattered heart ever feels safe enough to crawl back to the table.

This is the gentle maintenance of the vine we’ve been growing over these last few weeks. In a vineyard, vines produce what are called “sucker shoots.” These are fast-growing wild leaves that drain the vine’s energy away from producing actual fruit. They may look lush and green, but they are parasitic to the harvest.

In a healing relationship, our defensive reactions — the passive-aggressiveness, the emotional walls, the sudden outbursts — are like sucker shoots. They are wild energy born out of our survival instincts. Gentleness is the process of allowing God to prune away those frantic, self-protective overgrowths so that the energy of the marriage can finally go toward bearing actual fruit.

A Moment for the Soil

True gentleness (prautēs) isn’t weakness; it is the ultimate expression of spiritual power. It is the conscious decision to restrain your right to hurt back.

If you are standing on a raw, vulnerable shore in your relationship today, look at what you are holding in your hands:

• Where are you holding “leverage”? Are you keeping a mental record of offenses to use as weapons the next time things get heated? What would it look like to consciously lay that blade down?

• How can you offer a bridge of remembrance? Instead of demanding a defense or pushing for a forced apology, how can you extend a quiet, familiar grace that whispers, “Remember who we are to each other”?

• Where is the Holy Spirit asking you to be soft? Is there a “bruised reed” in your life right now that needs your restraint rather than your righteousness?

Standing there on the banks of the Red Sea, Moses gazed with awe at the crushing wall of deep, teal water. From behind him, he could hear the thundering vibrations of chariots racing through the choking, sandy dust. Thoughts raced through his mind as the voices of his people rose above the deafening thunder of the waves.

In that breathless, terrifying margin, the air grew thick with tension as salt spray drenched his beard. Yet, he stood firm, remembering all that God had done up to this point. Miracle after miracle had led them here. God would not abandon them now.

The Cry of the Trapped

Accusation rose among the people as they stood cowering beneath the powerful rippling of the east wind. Many stood in the cold, brine-heavy water, fearful and doubtful they would survive.

“Because there were no graves in Egypt, have you taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you so dealt with us, to bring us up out of Egypt? Is this not the word that we told you in Egypt, saying, ‘Let us alone that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than that we should die in the wilderness.” —Exodus 14:11-12

Where would they to go? They were trapped between the sea and the towering, jagged cliffs that rose like twisted fingers behind them. The sound of majestic Egyptian warhorses frantically neighing grew nearer. Close to 250,000 Egyptian soldiers were bearing down upon them.

In those agonizing moments, Moses drew in his breath, allowing the smell of marine salt and churning silt to fill his nostrils. A fierce desert breeze whipped the coarse fabric of his garments as he turned toward the people.

“Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see again no more forever. The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.” —Exodus 14:13-14

The Churning Abyss

The mighty pillar of cloud that led them now fell behind them, serving as a dark shroud before the eyes of the Egyptians. It stood as a protective wall between the two camps.

Moses stretched out his hand over that unrelenting sea and watched as the Lord sent a strong east wind throughout the night. This was a furious wall of air driving relentlessly through the dark.

The Israelites began their trek between the torrent of water on both sides. They entered a terrifying funhouse full of giant acoustic mirrors, where the shrieks of a hurricane-force wind and the deep, thundering rumbles of a displaced ocean bounced across them.

Women held their children with desperation as they fought against the elements with sheer willpower. Sandals slipped from side to side on wet silt, often sinking into pockets of deep mud.

Terrified livestock were driven forward by the men, blinded by the stinging salt pelting their faces. Grit flew across their bodies like whips as they pulled their cloaks tightly around them.

The Break of Dawn

Hours passed before they reached the other side. Bodies collapsed with exhaustion as their feet finally felt the sudden, stable sandy ground beneath them. Sobs of release could be heard across the embankment. The terrifying acoustic echo was replaced by a heavy, breathless hush.

As the last foot safely landed on shore, the wind instantly severed, causing the immense physical tension holding the ocean at bay to snap.

Millions of gallons of suspended ocean exploded downward with the force of a massive, synchronized tsunami. As it fell to the earth, the colliding walls of water sent an earth-shaking shockwave through the bedrock beneath their feet. Wooden chariots, horses, and armored men were tossed violently, churning within a whirlpool of white foam and dark silt.

Soon, the water calmed into a choppy sea. The debris of a broken empire washed upon the surf.

Moses finally lowered his trembling limbs. His face, raw from the stinging sand, looked through tears at the rhythmic, ordinary lap against the shore. His beard was matted with dried sea brine, and his throat was parched from shouting over the gale-force winds.

He fell to his knees.

A spirit of awe and deep, reverent fear washed over him. There before him floated the remnants and proof of the faithful, absolute power of the Almighty God he served.

Growing Through the Storm

Faith stands in the in-between of complete onslaught and terror and says, “Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord.”

The dirt we have been discussing over these last weeks in our series on the Fruit of the Spirit was the training ground where we learned to trust God. It was there in the darkness where the nutrients of the soil soaked deep into the roots of the tree. We connected to the peace of God and learned kindness while confronting the things that we needed to.

This week, we have broken ground and stand as a tree whipped by the winds of uncertainty. Trees have a remarkable ability to develop what is called reaction wood or stress wood. Wind forces the tree to produce specialized cells that make the trunk and its roots wider, denser, and more flexible.

I know the weight of those winds intimately. There was a time when my marriage felt completely trapped—facing an insurmountable sea of hurt in front of us, with years of pain bearing down from behind. It looked like a total dead end.

But in that terrifying in-between, when everything in me wanted to snap, God called us to stand still and see His salvation. He didn’t just patch things up; He used that brutal storm to force us to grow reaction wood. He built a structural density into our relationship that wasn’t there before, binding our roots together in a way that only a miracle could.

Without the storm, the root system will never tightly bind itself to the deep earth. But, when the storms come and you face the winds of adversity, our faith doesn’t just give us what we need to survive. The storm is what causes faith to lock its fingers even deeper into the bedrock.

Faith becomes that holy stubbornness that refuses to snap. It is the realization that we do not survive the storm by our own strength, but by the density of our grip on the One who holds us.

Like the Israelites standing on the shore that day, we can stand tall—battered, yet unbroken—because our roots are locked into an immovable Rock.

An Invitation to Stand Still

Where do you find yourself today? Are you standing on the edge of your own Red Sea, listening to the rumbling chariots of anxiety, broken relationships, or impossible circumstances closing in from behind?

If you feel like your faith is about to snap under the pressure, I want to invite you to do the hardest thing possible in the middle of a storm: stand still.

Let go of the need to fix the unfixable in your own strength. Drop your weight onto the Rock that cannot be moved, and watch how He begins to weave “reaction wood” into your life. The wind is howling right now, but the Lord is fighting for you. Take a deep breath, hold your peace, and get ready to see His salvation.

As I’ve been putting the finishing touches on my upcoming memoir, When the Son Breaks Through, I’ve been reflecting on how easily we drift into old patterns without even realizing we’re doing it. We like to think we are entirely in control of our adult choices, but our hearts carry hidden maps drawn long ago.

Today, I wanted to share a very personal piece of that story with you. This is an excerpt from a chapter where I look at the unexpected ways our childhood experiences carve deep paths—or “grooves”—into who we become.

The carving of these grooves isn’t abstract. They happen in real moments of pain—moments that leave a permanent mark, as they did for David ... and for me.

Somewhere around the age of 15, David was called upon to play music for a tormented King Saul. He began loading up his donkey with supplies and gifts for the King. His mind must have been spinning with thoughts of what he was about to face. The road to Saul’s palace stretched ahead of him, and somewhere deep in his chest, something tightened.

Up to this moment, most of David’s days were spent in the open field, connecting to God through worship and song under the vast open sky. Courage grounded in faith had sustained him as he faced both lion and bear. But what David was about to encounter would test his courage in ways he could never have imagined …

I remember a tightening in my own chest as our eighth-grade class gathered for our end-of-year trip to the Garden State Arts Center. I couldn’t tell you what we went to see, but I remember exactly what I had on. My grandmother had given me my first ever designer shirt by Diane von Furstenberg for my birthday. It was a soft pink cotton tee, initialed at the top right shoulder with DVF. My feet were tucked into a new pair of espadrilles tied up to meet the hem of a black floral prairie skirt. I felt so pretty that day, which made what happened next all the more tragic …

Arriving at the entrance of the palace, nervous excitement reverberated through his chest as David took in the vastness of the fortress standing in front of him. Once inside, he pulled his harp close as the cool air wrapped around him. Looking back, he watched as the last rays of sunlight receded behind the doors closing behind him. His eyes adjusted to the dim chamber. Lamps flickered in the small niches in the walls, casting restless shadows across the stone. David felt his heart beat a bit faster as he tried to see through the musty air.

Saul’s men approached David and started walking ahead of him. The quiet of the citadel was broken only by the “Slap! Slap! Slap!” of his sandals upon the hard stone floor. A hand nudged him forward. As he stepped into Saul’s throne room, a sense of astonishment overcame him as his eyes fell upon the once mighty king.

Crouched down next to his throne, he was muttering indiscernibly as his hands gestured wildly through the air. As soon as David took a seat, Saul shot a look his way, eyes red and narrowed. Standing up, he inched closer, trying to get a better look at David. “Play!” David’s fingers danced across the strings as his voice broke through the heavy atmosphere. Within minutes, a gentle peace draped over Saul as he settled back into his chair. He looked again at David and smiled. Something about David had captured Saul’s heart in that moment …

There were about 20 of us there that day, gathered around eating lunch after the show. A gentle breeze blew through the sun-drenched patio as we all sat sharing stories and giggling as only 14-year-old girls would do. I stuck close to my friend. I felt my heart beat a little faster as two boys from another school came over to talk with us. I said very little. I was painfully shy back then and a late bloomer. I had barely spoken to a boy, never mind having a boyfriend. But my friend chattered on. The attention made me feel alive in a way that surprised me. One of the boys asked if we’d like to take a walk. I was reluctant to go, but my friend assured me there was nothing to worry about, so I agreed.

We strolled together through the field towards an area of trees where my friend drifted off with one boy, leaving me with the other. Anxiety rose on the inside of me as he grabbed my hand. I heard my friend laughing as she disappeared among the trees. I looked back at this boy I was following, wishing we could just go back with the others. Within minutes, the trees opened up to a small lake. Not sure what to do, I took my cue from him as we sat down on the grass. I don’t remember if we had a conversation or not. I just remember wishing I were anywhere but there …

After that first day, Saul deeply loved David—until he didn’t. Saul had David come and live in the palace as one of his officers. David fought valiantly for Saul, winning every battle. It wasn’t long before Saul’s heart shifted. Jealousy took hold of Saul, and his love turned cold. One day, a tormenting spirit rushed upon Saul until madness overtook him.

David came in as he always had, to sing and play for him. But when he opened his eyes, instead of Saul sitting at peace in his right mind, the raging king rose with spear in hand and hurled it toward David. The breeze of it brushed across his cheek as he ducked out of the way. The courage that had carried him against lion, bear, and giant now faltered. The threat he now faced was of a different nature. Here, David was no longer the hunter but the hunted.

Life struck its first groove upon the pavement of David’s young heart …

Before I knew it, I was laid out on the ground as this boy, whose name I never knew, fell upon me. Like a deer caught in a trap, I was afraid to move. My senses came alive. I could hear the sound of the water quietly slapping back and forth. My ears tuned into the birds singing in the trees. I closed my eyes and endured. Everything went still. I couldn’t grasp what was happening. It was all so confusing, and I was afraid … so afraid.

Suddenly, “Laura!”

I heard my name. My eyes shot open. The boy jumped up.

Again, “Laura!”

It was my friend. I don’t remember getting to my feet, but as soon as I did, I ran. There she was. She grabbed my hand and yelled, “We have to go! They’re going to leave!” I ran as fast as I could down a hill, twisting my ankle as my espadrille turned beneath my foot, the ties around my ankle pulling downward. Once on the bus, tears streamed down my face. I couldn’t put into words what had just happened. I looked down—dirt was spread across my pink shirt.

Life had struck its first groove upon the pavement of my young heart.

Grooves like these are rarely noticed when they first appear. They are carved without notice in moments of fear, confusion, rejection, or pain—moments we endure and move past, believing life simply goes on. Yet the heart remembers. Over time, those grooves deepen, shaping how we see the world, how we respond to love, how we protect ourselves, and what we begin to desire.

David could not have known that day in Saul’s palace how deeply the road of his heart would one day be worn. The young shepherd who once stood fearlessly before lions and giants would eventually face battles of a different kind—battles not in open fields, but within the hidden chambers of his own heart.

And like David, most of us do not realize the direction our hearts are traveling until one day we stop, look around, and ask the same unsettling question:

How did I get here?
