If there is one town every antiques and interiors lover should visit at least once, it is L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue.

Set on the River Sorgue in Provence, this beautiful little town is often described as the antiques capital of Europe—and with very good reason. Behind its pretty waterside cafés, old stone buildings and turning waterwheels lies an extraordinary antiques world made up of hundreds of professional dealers.

There are individual shops, sprawling antiques centres, hidden courtyards, permanent dealer collectives, specialist warehouses and market stalls selling everything from grand French furniture and architectural salvage to paintings, textiles, ceramics, garden antiques and wonderfully decorative pieces.

But L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue can also be surprisingly difficult to navigate.

The antiques are not gathered neatly together in one obvious place. The shops and centres are spread around different parts of town, often tucked behind gateways or hidden inside courtyards. It is very easy to walk past somewhere exceptional without ever realising it is there.

The perfect long weekend in Provence

L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is not somewhere to rush through in an afternoon.

You could spend several days exploring its many antiques villages, centres, collectives and independent dealers—and still feel that you had only scratched the surface.

That is part of its magic.

Imagine arriving on a Thursday or Friday, settling into a little hotel or apartment in town and spending the next few days entirely immersed in French antiques and Provençal life. There are always plenty of choices on Airbnb/Booking.com and other rental sites. Plus in recent years a number of very nice Hotels have opened, along with Chambre d’hotes. As long as you book within the old town with the roads circling around it will be easy to walk everywhere.

You might begin with coffee beside the river before exploring your first cluster of antiques centres. Later, you stop for lunch, then continue into a maze of dealer spaces filled with old portraits, gilded mirrors, linen, lighting, garden urns, tables, chairs and pieces of architectural history.

On Sunday, the town comes alive for its famous weekly market, with food, flowers, local produce, brocante and antiques filling the streets.

This is not simply a shopping trip. It is a complete South of France experience.

Mostly the antiques places are open Thursday/Friday through to Monday lunchtime. Just remember Sunday is the whole town general Provençal market, with some flea market stalls. So antiquing is generally Thursday/Friday/Saturday and last minute purchases Monday!

The Gardens of Villandry

Then came one of the most beautiful places in France.

Château de Villandry.

I’ve seen photographs of these gardens countless times over the years, but standing there in person is something entirely different.

Every view feels like a painting.

What struck me most was how much thought and craftsmanship sits behind something that appears effortless.

Why Flea Markets Still Beat the Internet

Of course, no trip would be complete without hunting for antiques.

People often ask me why I still travel thousands of miles when so much can be bought online.

The answer is simple.

Because the best finds aren’t online.

The best finds are still hidden away.

They’re sitting in barns.

They’re tucked under tables at flea markets.

They’re hanging on walls in villages you’ve never heard of.

They’re waiting to be discovered.

Buying in France isn’t simply shopping.

It’s detective work.

It’s instinct.

It’s experience.

And occasionally it’s pure luck.

Some of the items we discovered on this trip will appear in future videos, some will head into the shop and some may become part of future French Art Club releases.

But every piece starts with the same thing:

Being there.

Chambord & A Day I’ll Never Forget

The final part of our journey took us to Château de Chambord.

If Villandry feels elegant and refined, Chambord feels almost unbelievable.

It’s one of those places that seems too grand to be real.

The scale is extraordinary.

Every angle reveals another tower, another detail, another reminder of the ambition that created it.

Around the château, markets, collectors and dealers gather, creating the perfect combination of history and treasure hunting.

For someone like me, it’s impossible not to feel inspired.

History, antiques, architecture and adventure all in one place.

That’s a very good day.

It has nothing to do with money, speed, or confidence.
It has everything to do with behaviour.

French flea markets, brocantes, and déballages operate on an unwritten code. Learn it, and doors open quietly. Ignore it, and prices rise, conversations close, and the best things never quite reach you.

1. Always Say Bonjour (This Is Not Optional)

Before you ask a price.
Before you touch anything.
Before you even properly look.

You say:

« Bonjour Monsieur »
« Bonjour Madame »

In France, politeness is not decorative — it is structural.

Fail to say bonjour and you don’t just appear rude; you signal that you don’t understand the culture you’re buying from. Prices harden. Warmth evaporates. The exchange shortens.

Say it — calmly, clearly, with eye contact — and everything that follows improves.

If you leave without buying, always add:

« Merci, bonne journée »
Thank you, have a good day

This matters more than any negotiating tactic.

2. Don’t Handle Everything (Aimless Touching Is the Fastest Way to Be Dismissed)

Nothing irritates French sellers more than someone who picks up and puts down every item on the stall with no clear intention of buying.

Especially when:

• you have no idea what anything is

• you haven’t asked the price of anything

• you’re simply filling time with your hands

In French flea market culture, handling is a signal.
It says: I’m interested — not I’m browsing for entertainment.

Randomly lifting objects, testing weight, opening boxes, tapping ceramics, then moving on without a word marks you instantly as someone who doesn’t understand value — or respect.

The correct rhythm is this:

• Look first

• Choose deliberately

• Ask permission

• Handle once, with focus

If nothing speaks to you, that’s fine. Stand back. Observe. Move on politely.

If something does speak to you, your handling should already tell the seller that you’re serious.

A simple acknowledgement helps:

« Je regarde seulement, merci »
I’m just looking, thank you

Or, when you stop handling:

« Je vais réfléchir »
I’m going to think about it

Both preserve goodwill.

Remember:
French sellers would rather you touch nothing than touch everything.

3. Ask One Question, Not Ten

Nothing marks a novice faster than asking the price of everything.

Choose one piece.
Point. Pause. Then ask:

« Vous en voulez combien ? »
How much are you asking?

Silence after the answer is expected.
Thinking is not weakness — it’s credibility.

4. Understand Prix Marchand

If you hear:

« Prix marchand »

You’re being quoted a trade price.

This is not the moment for theatrical bargaining. If you need time, say:

« Je réfléchis » – I’ll think about it
« Je reviens » – I’ll come back

Both keep the relationship intact.

5. Respect C’est vendu

If a dealer says:

« C’est vendu »
It’s sold

That conversation is over.

No counter-offers. No persuasion. No disappointment performed aloud.
French flea markets run on memory and trust.

6. Cash, Calm, Clean Exchange

Have cash ready. Notes, not coins.
No calculators. No commentary. No performance.

A clean exchange says: I know what I’m doing.

7. Use Soft Language, Not Pressure

These phrases open doors quietly:

« C’est intéressant » – That’s interesting
« C’est joli » – It’s lovely
« Je connais » – I’m familiar with this

Avoid:

• “Is it old?”

• “What’s your best price?”

• “I saw one cheaper…”

Those belong elsewhere.

8. Déballage Is Not a Spectator Sport

Déballage — the early unloading before markets officially open — is where much of the best stock changes hands.

It is quiet. Cold. Focused.

No filming. No hovering. No commentary.
Those who belong there already understand why.

9. January Is a Buyer’s Month

Winter markets are not theatrical.
They are honest.

January is when dealers reset stock, rebalance cash, and price realistically. If you understand etiquette, January buying can outperform spring.

Again — the specific January 2026 flea markets, trade fairs, and déballages are shared with paid readers only.

The headlines this week were hard to miss:

Klimt painting from the Lauder collection sells in New York for around $236,000,000

It’s an extraordinary figure. For most of us, it’s so big it almost stops meaning anything. A number on a screen, a gasp in the auction room, a brief flurry of think-pieces – and then we go back to ordinary life where electricity bills and food prices are the numbers that make us wince.

But I’ve found myself turning this sale over in my mind – not just as an art and antiques dealer, but as someone who thinks a lot about what it means to live with art.

So let’s slow it down and look at that number properly.

Scaling the impossible

Take the price of that Klimt and move the decimal point four places to the left:

• $236,000,000 becomes $23,600

Suddenly we’re back in a world we recognise.

At that level, you’re talking about:

• A proper home renovation – a kitchen, a bathroom, new windows, or

• A big, one-off house project you might save up for over several years.

For most ordinary families, £20,000–£25,000 is a major decision. You sit down with a calculator. You make trade-offs.

“If we do the kitchen this year, we won’t go on a big holiday.”
“If we take on that building work, Christmas has to be smaller.”

You feel it in your daily life.

Now imagine you’re not living at our level, but at the Lauder level – the world of Estée Lauder lipstick fortunes and long-established billions.

If you’re worth, say, $10–20 billion, then spending $236 million on a painting is roughly one to two per cent of your net worth. For a household with, say, £300,000 in total assets, that would be like spending somewhere in the region of £3,000–£6,000.

Important? Yes.
Life-altering? No.

It’s not “sell the house and pray.”
It’s not “we’ll be eating beans for the next decade.”

It’s a thoughtful purchase at the top of a portfolio – not “everything we own in one throw of the dice.”

No one is cancelling their Christmas because of this Klimt. No one is cutting back on their New Year holiday. The decision is not between “this painting” and “everything else”. It’s simply between this asset and another asset.

From kitchen table to Klimt

The money behind these paintings began in a very different place: at a kitchen table.

Leonard’s mother, Estée Lauder, started by literally mixing face creams, created by her Hungarian uncle, at home in New York, bottling them up and selling them herself to salon clients and society women. She was the product genius and the storyteller.

Leonard was the strategist. He took his mother’s jars and ideas and turned them into a global beauty empire – pushing into department stores, opening labs, acquiring other brands and eventually taking Estée Lauder public.

That’s the alchemy at the heart of this story:

kitchen-table cosmetics + clever corporate scaling = Klimt money.

The fortune that paid for Klimts is really a double act – his mother’s ideas and graft, and his own talent for turning those ideas into a vast, listed company.

Moving hundreds of millions around

The Lauders understand the dance between art and capital better than most.

Back in 2006, Ronald S. Lauder (Leonard’s younger brother) bought Klimt’s famous portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I – the “Woman in Gold” – for a then-record $135 million. For a moment, it was the most expensive painting in the world.

Just a couple of months later, he quietly raised about $190 million in cash by selling 49% of his interest in a television company he had founded.

On paper, it was a straightforward business move: realising a return on an early media investment, diversifying his portfolio, freeing up capital.

In practice, it’s hard not to see the parallel:

• A nine-figure Klimt goes into the collection.

• A nine-figure media stake gets turned into cash.

When you live at that altitude, hundreds of millions can be shuffled between companies and canvases with the same calm logic most of us apply to moving money from savings to current to cover a building project or a big bill.

The recent New York sale of the Lauder Klimt is another step in the same pattern: money realised here, capital parked there, a masterpiece changing hands like the world’s most beautiful financial instrument.

When one painting equals four years of museums

The asymmetry becomes almost surreal when you set these decisions next to public money.

When Austria wrestled with the question of whether to keep the restituted Klimt paintings – including Adele Bloch-Bauer I – a minister admitted that buying them would have cost around four times the annual budget of Austria’s national museums.

Four years of museum budgets, for five paintings.

So on one side you have a single private collector, able to shift assets and raise hundreds of millions in order to buy artworks that mean a great deal to him and his museum in New York.

On the other side you have an entire country saying: we simply can’t. Not without closing galleries, sacking staff and abandoning their other responsibilities.

Fast-forward to this week’s sale:

• One Klimt portrait from the Lauder collection fetches around $236 million.

• Add the landscape and the meadow and the evening’s Klimt total soars towards $400 million.

Those are numbers that exceed the annual acquisitions budgets of multiple major museums combined.

No one here is breaking the rules. But it does underline just how far apart the private and public art worlds now sit.

Private rooms, not public walls

We like to say that “great art belongs to the world”.

In practice, it belongs to whoever can pay for it – and to whatever rooms they choose to hang it in.

Take the Klimts:

• For decades, the Bloch-Bauer Klimts hung in Vienna’s Belvedere, woven into the city’s story about itself.

• After restitution, they were sold; Adele Bloch-Bauer I became the glittering centrepiece of Ronald Lauder’s Neue Galerie in New York. Accessible, yes – but on his terms, in his museum.

• The Klimt that has just sold for $236 million spent nearly forty years above Leonard Lauder’s dining table, leaving for exhibitions only when it suited.

• Its new owner is anonymous. We don’t yet know whether it will hang in another private home, vanish into a freeport, or eventually surface in a new institution somewhere else in the world.

We also don’t yet know what kind of money story sits behind this new owner.

Rumours in the room range from a Gulf-state cultural authority to an ultra-discreet Asian collector. Perhaps we’ll never hear their origin story – if there even is a romantic one. Not every fortune behind a $236 million painting starts with a woman mixing creams in a New York apartment; some are born from oilfields, balance sheets and sovereign funds, far from any kitchen at all.

What you can buy for £200–£500

Here’s the part that really matters to me.

You don’t need hundreds of millions – or even thousands – to live with original art.

For a few hundred pounds, most people could buy a unique, one-off painting they genuinely love. Not a print run of 5,000. Not a canvas churned out to match a sofa colour, imported by the container-load. A real painting that an artist actually stood in front of and made.

You can hang it in a rented flat or an owned home, above the fireplace or next to the kitchen table, and see it every single day.

Will it ever be worth millions? Almost certainly not.

But could that £200–£500 painting be worth a few thousand one day, as more people turn away from mass-produced décor and start looking for one-of-a-kind pieces with a story? Absolutely. Markets move in strange ways. Tastes shift. Artists are rediscovered all the time.

Personally, I only ever buy paintings I like. That is my only rule.

I want to love what’s on my walls.

I live with these pictures. I walk past them with a mug of tea. I notice a new detail when the autumn light hits a certain way. I enjoy them daily. They are companions, not trophies. If, in twenty years’ time, one of them has quietly crept up in monetary value, that’s a lovely bonus. But the real return has already been paid out – daily – in the pleasure of actually living with art.

Why collecting still matters

In our current world of mass-produced everything – fast furniture, fast fashion, and “art” printed by the container – collecting still matters, perhaps more than ever.

Choosing a unique piece, whether it’s:

• a century-old landscape from a French flea market,

• a mid-century abstract from a local auction, or

• a canvas fresh from a young artist’s studio,

is a quiet act of resistance against the disposable.

Unique items, both old and new, are special. They carry individuality, memory, and that slightly indefinable feeling of presence. They don’t care what the algorithm says is “in” this week. They don’t suddenly look dated because a high-street chain changes its colour palette.

They anchor us.
They make our homes feel like ours.

And that, in the end, is the same magic that underpins a $236 million Klimt and a £250 painting hanging above a rented fireplace: there is only one. One object, one image, one set of brushstrokes in all the world.

The numbers are wildly different. The principle is exactly the same.

Relative money, real joy

So yes – the record sale is shocking.

But it’s also, in the sealed world of multi-billion-dollar fortunes, perfectly rational. For the buyer, $236 million is a serious but manageable decision. For a small European country, it would have been several years of museum budgets. For most of us, it’s an amount of money we will never even see on paper.

Where we do have power, though, is at our own scale.

We can choose to live with things that were made with intention.
We can spend hundreds, not hundreds of millions, on pieces that move us.
We can support living artists, rescue forgotten paintings from anonymity, and build small, personal collections that make our own four walls feel richer, calmer and more completely ours.

A handful of people in the world can bid on Klimts at $236 million.
But millions of people can quietly decide: I’m going to have something original on my wall.

That, to me, is where the real joy – and the real power – of collecting still lies.

The Weekend When the Streets Disappear Under a Sea of Antique Stalls

If you’ve ever dreamed of losing yourself in the ultimate vintage and antique hunt, this is the one. Just bring strong legs, sharp elbows, and — if you’re lucky — a willing family member or two.

There’s one entire weekend each year when an entire city in the north of France transforms.
The cars vanish. The streets are barricaded. And in their place? Mile after mile of stalls — vintage, antique, bric-à-brac, and outright treasures spilling from kerb to kerb.

I mean filled.
Not a polite, evenly spaced “craft fair” kind of filled. This is stall after stall after stall, stacked high, layered deep, and manned by dealers from across France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and beyond. Some have polished mahogany tables and gilt-framed paintings; others tip their finds onto a blanket and let you rummage until your fingers are black with dust.

You can smell it before you see it — the aroma of moules frites and sizzling crêpes mingling with the faint must of old books and waxed furniture

The Year I Couldn’t Move an Inch

One year, the crowds swelled so thick that I found myself completely stationary for over an hour. My trusty flea market trolley was piled precariously with three huge gilt mirrors, some oil paintings, and boxes of random ormolu tie backs and smalls — and there was literally nowhere to go. People were shoulder-to-shoulder, a slow tide of humanity pressing in from every side. Somewhat scary, like a football match crush…
I just stood there, laughing at the absurdity, chatting to the dealers trapped alongside me, and occasionally patting my mirrors as though they were nervous ponies.

It’s not a market for the faint-hearted. If you need personal space, stay home. If you want to see everything, wear shoes that love your feet and plan to be out from dawn until well after dark.

A Family Affair

Over the years, this weekend has been a true family affair. All three of my children have joined me at one time or another, darting ahead to scout the next row of stalls or guarding my haul while I negotiated over a marble-topped commode. Even my mother used to make a weekend of it — walking the boulevards with her own pull along basket in hand, coming back to the hotel laden with vintage linens and French enamel jugs.

Easy to Get To — Hard to Forget

Getting there couldn’t be easier — which is part of its charm. You can load up the car or van and drive straight into the city from Calais in under two hours, perfect for bringing home every last mirror, chair, or crate of enamelware you buy. Or, if you’re travelling light, you can hop on the Eurostar and be strolling those treasure-packed streets in just a few hours from London. However you arrive, the real magic is knowing exactly where to start once you get there — and that’s something I reveal, step-by-step, in September’s Monthly French Flea Market List for my paid subscribers.

August may be peak season for flea markets across France, but September is just as busy. Towns, villages and entire cities come alive with antique and vintage sellers spreading their wares right out onto the streets. In France, thanks to warm summers, damp winters, and the fact that so many antiques are stored in barns, outbuildings, and dusty attics, woodworm is a real threat. Even when buying from reputable dealers, don’t assume the piece has been treated. Many will expect you, as a seasoned buyer, to handle that yourself.

Sometimes dealers have treated items — but I work on the premise that it’s either not been done or hasn’t been done thoroughly enough. That mindset has saved me more than once.

My Golden Rule: Treat Everything

When our van rolls back into Dorset after a French buying trip, every wooden purchase gets treated, no matter how small. My preferred method is a brush-on liquid treatment, which allows me to work the solution deep into the most affected areas.

For wood with no visible holes, a garden sprayer can be effective, coating hidden or awkward spots. After treatment, I leave the items outside under a tarpaulin for 24–48 hours to dry completely before anything goes into my barn workshop.

It feels like a bit of a rigmarole, but this ritual has spared me the heartache (and expense) of finding fresh woodworm activity months later.

The Life Cycle of a Woodworm

Knowing how they live makes it clear why prompt and thorough treatment is essential.

1. Egg Stage – Adult beetles lay eggs in the cracks, crevices, or old flight holes of timber. These are tiny and easily missed.

2. Larva Stage – The woodworm itself is the larva. After hatching, it bores into the timber, tunnelling and feeding for 2–5 years. This is the stage where the damage is done — all hidden inside the wood.

3. Pupa Stage – When ready to mature, the larva creates a chamber near the surface to pupate.

4. Adult Beetle Stage – The adult emerges, leaving behind the telltale round flight holes and fine powder (frass). The cycle then begins again if left untreated.

What to Look Out For Before You Buy

Not all woods are equally vulnerable. Pine is particularly susceptible to woodworm — and much French furniture, especially rustic farmhouse pieces, is made of pine. Oak and other hardwoods are more resistant, but not infallible, so never skip a thorough inspection.

Once a piece is fully treated and dried, the holes can be filled. I like to apply wood filler by hand (wearing a glove), pressing it firmly into each hole, then scraping off the excess with a palette knife.

If numerous holes are visible on a decorative surface, a repaint or refinishing job may be the best way forward — and I always factor that extra work into my purchase negotiations.

And here’s the hard truth: sometimes a piece just isn’t beautiful enough to justify all that extra work. With export costs to England, the USA, and beyond only rising, you must make sure the piece is worth it before you buy. Some things are best left where you found them — still sitting at the French flea market.

Final Thought

Woodworm isn’t something to fear — it’s something to prepare for. In the world of French antiques, diligence and a few extra hours’ work can save both your investment and your sanity. Treat first, restore second, and enjoy your finds for decades to come.

If you’ve ever wandered through a French flea market at 6am, you’ll know it’s a different world.
The mist still clings to the fields, the smell of fresh bread drifts from the boulangerie, and in the half-light you can hear the low thud of van doors sliding open. Somewhere, a dealer is laying out a set of timeworn copper pans; somewhere else, a folding table groans under the weight of mismatched china and the occasional objet d’art that makes your heart race.

Early mornings in France are when antique dealers come alive. It’s not just about beating the crowds — it’s about catching those precious first few minutes when the best pieces emerge from the backs of vans and are snapped up in whispered, lightning-fast transactions. A 19th-century gilt mirror? Gone in under a minute. An oil painting in an untouched frame? You might have ten seconds before another pair of eyes spots it.

But here’s the truth — sometimes, the real buying starts the night before.

When a market is big enough, the vans arrive in the back streets hours before setup, queuing quietly for their booked spaces. My “after dinner stroll” back to the hotel often turns into something far more exciting. In very rural spots, that hotel might just be a mattress in the back of my own van — parked alongside a row of antiques dealers and collectors who’ve done the same.

You pass a trailer and catch a glimpse of a chateau clearance: the side door open, a dealer perched on a folding chair inside, surrounded by armoires, mirrors, and bundles wrapped in dust sheets. This is the hour when French dealers recognise the real buyers. A friendly “Bonsoir” in my best franglais often earns me the ultimate privilege: a proud unveiling of their latest pièce de résistance. The star item they’ll save for the centre of their pitch in the morning — the one they know will turn heads across the whole market.

And this, my friends, is when the Euros do the talking. Cash is most certainly king in France, especially in the shadowy world of night trading.

One such evening, my eyes landed on the glint of gilt through a striped wool blanket — a massive mirror, too tall to stand upright in the van. I could see the carved crown peeking through: shells, flowers, flourishes. The dealer saw my expression change and knew instantly I’d spotted her. He launched into the mirror’s history while my mind raced: who would buy this, what price I could ask, how it compared to the last one I’d seen, whether the glass was original, foxed, intact…

It felt like an eternity, but within a minute, the deal was done. A fistful of euros changed hands, and the mirror was mine — in theory. The Frenchman would keep it in his van until morning. Which left the most nerve-wracking part of the whole night: would he be there when the market opened? Would the mirror survive the night undamaged?

Most times, yes. But not always. And those “not always” moments are unforgettable for all the wrong reasons.

Of course, arriving early — or staying up late — is only half the battle. Knowing which markets are worth the effort, and when to be there, is where the real advantage lies. Over the last 25 years I’ve built a private list of markets, brocantes, and hidden fairs across France that are worth the midnight drive, the dawn wake-up, and the gamble.

For over 25 years, I’ve chased that feeling across France — from windswept northern ports to sunlit Provençal squares, from chaotic city flea markets to dusty barns where time has stood still. Now, I’m opening my notes, my routes, and my best-kept secrets to you.
