A city built around a grave

Hierapolis—the same city where St. Papias once served as bishop in the early 2nd century—had long claimed to hold something extraordinary: the resting place of the Apostle Philip, martyred there around AD 80. According to the Acts of Philip, a 4th-century non-canonical text, St. Philip was crucified upside down under the persecution of Emperor Domitian, unwilling, like St. Peter before him, to be crucified in the same manner as his Lord.

For nearly 2,000 years, this claim survived only in tradition and in the shape of the city itself. Pilgrims built a hilltop complex around the site—a 4th- or 5th-century basilica known as the “Church of the Sepulchre,” an octagonal martyrium, which is a church, chapel, or shrine built over the tomb of a Christian martyr or at a site sacred to a key event in the faith. An inscription in the ancient necropolis references a church dedicated to St. Philip. What no one had found was the tomb itself.

That all changed when Francesco D’Andria, an archaeologist from the University of Salento who had directed the Hierapolis excavation mission since 2000, uncovered a first-century tomb standing at the very center of that basilica—precisely where centuries of pilgrimage architecture had been built up around it, as though generations of builders knew exactly what they were protecting.

What the Italian archaeologist found—and what he didn’t find

The tomb was empty.

That’s not a disappointment, but instead part of the story. According to tradition, St. Philip’s relics didn’t stay in Hierapolis. At some point, they were carried north to Constantinople. They were likely moved, as so many relics were during this period, to protect them from the waves of invasion and instability battering the edges of the Christian world.

Then, in the 6th century, the bones were moved again. Pope Pelagius I (AD 556–561) had the relics of St. Philip and the Apostle James the Less brought from Constantinople to Rome. He began construction of a basilica to house them—the basilica apostolorum Philippi et Iacobi—completed under Pope John III and consecrated in AD 565. Today, it’s known as the Basilica dei Santi XII Apostoli, the Church of the Twelve Apostles, and the relics traditionally attributed to the two apostles still rest in its crypt.

They were rediscovered once more in 1873, when excavations beneath the church’s main altar unearthed the remains—a shinbone and mummified foot tissue attributed to St. Philip, a femur attributed to St. James—and repositioned them in the confessio, where they remain today.

The Bones Didn’t All Stay Together

The relics’ journey didn’t end there. Not everything made it to Rome, and not everything stayed put once it arrived.

Later testimony indicates a portion of St. Philip’s relics remained behind in Constantinople even after the 6th century translation. When Constantinople fell to the Fourth Crusade in AD 1204, a fragment of Philip’s skull—reportedly bearing four imperial seals, including those of Theodosius the Great and Heraclius—made its way to Cyprus, arriving at the village of Arsos on July 31, 1204, a date still kept as a local feast day.

Another fragment of the saint’s skull surfaced at Reading Abbey in England by the early 13th century, apparently among the relics brought west from Constantinople after the 4th Crusade, and was given to the abbey by King John. Winchester Cathedral also once possessed a relic identified as a foot of St. Philip. That relic survived the Reformation and eventually made its way to the great relic collection of Philip II of Spain at El Escorial. Intriguingly, the remains attributed to Philip in Rome include portions of a tibia and foot—so the existence of a second purported foot relic is not, by itself, anatomically impossible.

Does the Evidence Actually Hold Up?

Here the story takes an interesting turn...

In 2021, a team of researchers subjected the relics and associated altar materials in Rome to scientific analysis, including radiocarbon dating, thermoluminescence dating, and chemical testing. The results were mixed. Materials associated with the altar—an oil residue and a ceramic shard—produced dates consistent with the 6th-century period in which tradition says the relics were brought to Rome.

The femur attributed to James the Less, however, did not hold up. Radiocarbon dating placed it between AD 214 and 340—centuries after James would have died in the first century. Whatever that bone is, it cannot be the Apostle James…if the tests are to be believed.

The remains attributed to St. Philip did not produce the same kind of definitive negative result. The study therefore does not amount to a wholesale debunking of the Philip relics. But it does introduce a genuine, peer-reviewed complication into a relic tradition that had stood largely unexamined for more than 1,000 years.

Whose tomb is it then?

And then there’s the deeper question, the one that predates the Rome relics by centuries: was the man buried at Hierapolis even St. Philip the Apostle?

The ancient sources are actually more emphatic on this point than you might expect. Eusebius of Caesarea, writing his Ecclesiastical History around AD 325, preserves a letter from Polycrates, bishop of Ephesus, written around AD 190. Polycrates states plainly that Philip, “one of the twelve apostles,” sleeps in Hierapolis alongside two of his daughters, with another daughter buried at Ephesus. Eusebius cites the tradition again in Book III.31 and later, in Book III.39, adds that Papias—bishop of Hierapolis and a contemporary of Philip’s daughters—said that he had personally heard from them the story of a man being raised from the dead.

So the tradition, as inherited, is explicit: this is the Apostle, not merely an evangelist who shared his name.

And yet modern scholars remain unconvinced the ancients got this right. The Acts of the Apostles (21:8–9) separately describes a different Philip—one of the seven deacons appointed in Acts 6, commonly called Philip the Evangelist—whose four prophesying daughters lived with him in Caesarea, not Hierapolis. Eusebius himself was aware of this second Philip and drew a distinction between the two men in his text. But the two traditions bear a suspicious resemblance: both Philips had multiple prophetically gifted daughters; both are remembered in connection with virginity and prophecy; and the neat, tidy distinction Eusebius draws may reflect later harmonizing of two originally separate, locally confused memories, rather than settled 1st-century fact.

In other words: the confusion isn’t a modern invention projected backward onto the ancients. It’s a live possibility even within the ancient testimony itself, preserved by writers who were already working to sort out two overlapping stories a century after the fact.

Why This Matters

It would be easy to treat all of this as a loose end—an archaeological discovery that raises as many questions as it answers, a relic tradition complicated by modern science, a saint’s identity debated by scholars for over a century. But that’s exactly what makes it worth telling.

Start with what we know for sure: the tomb at Hierapolis is physical, dateable, and real. It’s a genuine 1st-century burial that an ancient Christian community built an entire pilgrimage complex around, convinced it held an apostle. What’s not solid is which apostle. Whether the man commemorated there was Philip the Apostle, Philip the Evangelist, or the product of a conflation of the two traditions takes us straight into how oral tradition, local devotion, and competing claims to apostolic connection got woven together in the earliest centuries of the Church. It’s the same tangled inheritance St. Papias himself was trying to sort through when he went looking for the words of men who had known the Apostles…before those words disappeared for good.

Here’s the bottom line: Christians don’t need every relic to be authentic for the faith to be true. What we need is honesty about which claims rest on solid ground and which don’t—and the willingness to let a bone be wrong, if it’s wrong, without letting that shake the far larger structure of the historical case for Christ and the apostles. Truth doesn’t need us to protect it from evidence. It survives evidence.

That femur in Rome didn’t. Neither, it turns out, does certainty about the tomb in Hierapolis.

St. Vincent of Lérins wrote those words in his Commonitorium around AD 434, as we discussed in Part I, and the line gets deployed constantly as a straight head-count. If enough Christians in enough places believed something, it’s orthodox. If they didn’t, it isn’t. Simple majority rule.

But that’s not what the canon says. And St. Vincent had a very specific reason for not writing it that way.

Note - for clarity, orthodox [lower case o] means adhering to traditional, accepted, and classically established beliefs and customs. It does not refer to the Orthodox Church [upper case O].

What happens when the whole church gets it wrong?

Chapter 2 of St. Vincent’s work gives you the famous formula and defines its three legs plainly. Universality means confessing the one faith the whole Church across the world confesses; antiquity means never departing from what the fathers held; consent means holding, within antiquity itself, to what was agreed on by “all, or at the least of almost all priests and doctors” (Commonitorium 2, trans. C.A. Heurtley).

But St. Vincent immediately anticipates the obvious problem, and he states it as a direct question in chapter 3:

“What then will a Catholic Christian do, if a small portion of the Church have cut itself off from the communion of the universal faith?”

And then the harder version of the same question:

“What, if some novel contagion seek to infect not merely an insignificant portion of the Church, but the whole?”

That second question is the one that matters more. What happens when universality itself fails, when the corruption isn’t a fringe group, but the mainstream?

He wasn’t asking hypothetically. He was writing with a specific, recent precedent in view.

Why St. Vincent built in a fail-safe

For most of the 4th century, the episcopate, aka the bishops, and a majority of priests did not hold the line on the full divinity of Jesus Christ. After the Council of Nicaea in AD 325 condemned Arius, the political tide turned. Under Roman Emperor Constantius II, Arian and semi-Arian formulas were pushed through synod after synod—Sirmium, Rimini, Seleucia—and the majority of bishops in both East and West signed on to one compromise creed or another.

St. Jerome, writing about the aftermath of Rimini in 359 AD, summed it up in a line that has eclipsed nearly everything else he wrote (Dialogus contra Luciferianos 19):

“The whole world groaned and marveled to find itself Arian.”

It’s one of the most quietly devastating lines in patristic literature, because of what actually happened at Rimini. The emperor Constantius II wanted unity, so he pressured hundreds of Western bishops—orthodox men, not heretics—into signing a deliberately vague creed that dropped the word homoousios (the term nailing down that Christ is of the same essence as the Father, hammered out at Nicaea). No one thought they were abandoning Nicene theology. They thought they were signing a compromise to get the emperor off their backs and go home.

Then they got home and realized what they’d actually signed.

That’s the groan. It wasn’t a theological conversion, it was bishops waking up to discover they’d been maneuvered into heresy by a clever politician, one ambiguous clause at a time. St. Jerome’s line is basically the patristic version of “We didn’t read the fine print, and now we are the fine print.”

This is the context St. Athanasius of Alexandria was operating in when he spent years in exile, deposed, condemned, and functionally alone among the hierarchy in refusing to sign. It’s where Athanasius contra mundum comes from—Athanasius against the world—because for a good stretch of the 4th century, the world, meaning the visible institutional consensus, was on the wrong side.

St. Vincent did not live through this. He was writing in AD 434, roughly 75 years after Rimini, but close enough that the memory of a corrupted mainstream was still institutional knowledge. He inherited the history rather than witnessing it, the same way he inherited Nicaea and the whole settled case against Arius. He wrote his Chapter 3 because he needed the canon to survive the one scenario that had already broken it in the near past.

The orthodox formula with tiebreakers

Here is what chapter 3 lays out in answer to his own question, and it’s not a head-count. It is a ranked procedure with tiebreakers. His answer to the small-scale case comes first (Commonitorium 3):

“Prefer the soundness of the whole body to the unsoundness of a pestilent and corrupt member.”

Cut off from the whole, a minority loses, no matter how sincere. But for the large-scale case—the “novel contagion” that infects “not an insignificant portion... but the whole”—Vincent gives a different answer:

“It will be his care to cleave to antiquity, which at this day cannot possibly be seduced by any fraud of novelty”

Then he sets up a ranking system for every Christian to use to determine what is orthodox, or right belief:

1. Prefer antiquity to present consensus. If the wider Church has drifted, go back to what was believed before the drift—not what most people currently say.

2. Failing a clear antiquity opinion, appeal to a general council. St. Vincent’s own words:

   “…prefer the decrees, if such there be, of an ancient General Council to the rashness and ignorance of a few.”

3. Failing that, appeal to the consentient masters.

   “Collate and consult and interrogate the opinions of the ancients,” teachers across different times and places who nonetheless agree “not by one or two of these only, but by all.”

That is the actual machinery for determining what is orthodox. “What has been believed everywhere, always, and by all” is the ordinary-conditions test. Chapter 3 is what you run when ordinary conditions have failed, which is precisely the condition the Christian Church had just lived through with the Arian Controversy.

How Rome found the back door

Chapter 3 is the fallback nobody quotes because the majority failed. Chapter 23 is the passage that got misquoted because the majority succeeded. And it’s where the canon’s most consequential afterlife begins.

In chapter 23, St. Vincent turns to a different problem: not corruption, but growth. Doctrine develops. The Church today understands things more completely than the Church of the Apostles did. St. Vincent’s answer is that this is not only permitted, but expected, provided it happens:

“…within the same dogma, the same meaning, the same judgment”—in eodem scilicet dogmate, eodem sensu, eademque sententia.

Four Latin words doing the load-bearing work of an entire theory: growth is fine, as long as it stays in the same sense.

St. Vincent meant this as a constraint.

Development has to remain recognizably the same thing, not a new thing wearing the old thing’s name.

Rome inverted the emphasis. That exact phrase—eodem sensu eademque sententia—is what Pius IX invoked in Ineffabilis Deus (1854) to define the Immaculate Conception, and what Vatican I built into the dogmatic constitution Dei Filius (1870) as the standing rule for how doctrine may legitimately develop, including papal infallibility defined at that same council.

Neither of these late Roman Catholic dogma declarations pass St. Vincent’s canon in any plain sense: nobody can point to a bishop teaching the Immaculate Conception as defined doctrine in, say, the 3rd century, believed everywhere, always, and by all. So the argument shifted ground. It wasn’t “this was always taught.” It was “this was always implicit, and stating it now is growth eodem sensu—the same sense, just fuller.”

That is a coherent theological move. It’s also the one place where Vincent’s own text supplies the tool for getting around Vincent’s own headline rule. The canon says: show me it was always believed. Chapter 23 says: or show me it grew in the same sense from something that was. The second door is far easier to walk through, and it was Rome, not the East, that built a doctrinal architecture on it.

The man who exploited the loophole

Vatican I wasn’t the first to walk through that door. John Henry Newman got there first, and he didn’t just cite the loophole—he built an entire theology out of it, and it took him with it.

Newman spent the first half of his life as one of the most prominent men in the Church of England, leading the Oxford Movement from 1833 in an effort to recover the ancient Church’s fullness without leaving Anglicanism. The whole project assumed you could have both. And Newman had used the plain-sense Vincentian canon himself, the Anglican and Protestant polemicist’s favorite weapon against Rome: show me the Immaculate Conception, purgatory, or papal supremacy taught everywhere, always, and by everyone in the early Church, and if you can’t, it isn’t Apostolic.

Then he tried to run the test rigorously, hit chapter 23, and it stopped doing what he needed it to do. If doctrine can legitimately grow while staying “in the same sense,” then a Marian dogma or a fully articulated papacy absent from the 2nd-century record doesn’t disqualify it. It just means the seed hadn’t grown yet. So he built that argument into a book: An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine, worked case by case through history to show Rome’s later dogmas as organic growth from Apostolic seed rather than invention.

He didn’t finish it as an Anglican. Newman was still mid-manuscript, still checking proofs, when the logic of his own book overtook him before he could decide anything at leisure. The postscript to the first edition, dated October 6, 1845, says it plainly:

“Since the above was written, the Author has joined the Catholic Church.”

He asked Catholic authorities to review the parts he’d written before his conversion; they told him to let the book stand exactly as written, on the grounds that it would land harder read as the author had actually thought his way through it, Protestant premises and all, up to the point where they gave out.

Newman was received into the Catholic Church that October, ordained a Catholic priest not long after, founded the first English Oratory of St. Philip Neri in Birmingham in 1847, and was made a cardinal by Leo XIII in 1879. He revised the Essay once more in 1878—33 years after the conversion it triggered—tightening the argument, but keeping the same hinge.

Why This Matters

Quote chapter 2 alone and the Vincentian canon becomes a majority-rule slogan St. Vincent never intended. Quote it without chapter 3 and you lose the one tool he gave the Church for the moment the majority itself goes wrong. Quote it without chapter 23 and you miss the seam Rome later worked open.

That third piece is worth heavy contemplation. St. Vincent wrote eodem sensu as a leash on doctrine, not a launching pad. Growth had to stay recognizably the same thing. What Rome did with that phrase—first informally, then formally at Vatican I—was use it to justify defining dogmas that chapter 2 could never have passed on its own terms. Nobody can produce a 3rd-century bishop teaching the Immaculate Conception as settled doctrine. So the argument stopped being “this was always taught” and became “this was always latent, and defining it now is growth in the same sense.”

That’s not continuity. That’s the canon’s own language repurposed to license exactly the kind of novelty it was built to rule out.

Newman is the proof of how far that repurposing can carry someone. He ran the plain-sense test against Rome as a convinced Anglican, expecting it to keep excluding what it had always excluded. Instead he found the door chapter 23 leaves open, walked through it, and didn’t stop until he was a Roman Catholic cardinal. The four words didn’t just describe Rome’s method after the fact, they gave one of the sharpest minds of the century a reason to think his way there.

St. Vincent handed the Church a real safeguard against this sort of novelty. He also, without meaning to, handed Rome the exact vocabulary it needed to sell novelty as tradition. Read the canon in isolation and you’ll miss both halves of that story.

That’s strange enough on its own. It gets stranger when you consider who St. Augustine of Hippo was: a man who’d died only four years before St. Vincent picked up his pen to write his famous Commonitorium, and who was, by that point, the dominant theological mind in the entire Latin West. He was a bishop whose writings on grace had already settled two major controversies and were, at that very moment, the subject of open unrest among the monks of St. Vincent’s own Gaul. Leaving a figure like that off a list of trustworthy teachers isn’t like forgetting a minor bishop. It’s like writing a history of 20th-century physics and never once saying “Einstein.”

Further, St. Vincent wasn’t shy about naming names elsewhere. In AD 434, this Gallic monk sat down to compose the most famous test for orthodox Christianity ever devised — quod ubique, quod semper, quod ab omnibus creditum est:

“…that which has been believed everywhere, always, by all.”

And along the way he named and denounced heretic after heretic: Nestorius, Pelagius, Photinus, Apollinaris, Julian of Eclanum, each one called out “with horror,” each one walked through chapter by chapter.

But when St. Vincent lists the great teachers of the Church—the men who had faithfully defended and handed down the Gospel—St. Augustine simply isn’t there.

Not condemned. Not praised. Not mentioned at all.

So I went looking for why…

The backstory: Gaul vs. Hippo

To understand why, we have to go back six years, to AD 428. That’s when Prosper of Aquitaine, a layman and one of St. Augustine’s most devoted disciples, wrote directly to him with a warning. The monks and clergy of southern Gaul, Prosper reported, were deeply unsettled by his teaching on grace and predestination. Specifically: the idea that God’s grace comes to the elect first, prior to and apart from any human response, was landing in Gaul as something close to fatalism.

If grace precedes and determines everything, the Gallic monks asked, what’s left of human effort? What’s left of asceticism, of striving, of the will itself?

Received tradition from the Early Church taught that grace is first met by the human being reaching toward God: asking, seeking, knocking, per the Gospel’s own language. Grace doesn’t override that movement. It quite literally answers it.

What St. Vincent actually wrote

Six years after Prosper’s letter, St. Vincent sat down to write the Commonitorium, ostensibly a general handbook for differentiating heresy from orthodoxy. He never mentions the predestination controversy directly. He never names St. Augustine. But the entire architecture of the work—the insistence that true doctrine is what the whole Church has always held, not what one brilliant theologian has newly worked out—reads as a quiet, devastating rebuttal aimed at exactly the kind of theological innovation St. Augustine’s Gallic critics thought predestination represented.

And in Chapter 26, St. Vincent gets about as close to naming his target as he ever does. Without saying the name Augustine, he describes it as heresy to teach of:

“…a certain great and special and altogether personal grace of God, which is given to a certain predestined elect, without any labor, without any effort, without any industry, even though they neither ask, nor seek, nor knock.”

Take a hard look at that last clause again. “Neither ask, nor seek, nor knock.” It’s directly from Christ’s own words in the Sermon on the Mount in St. Matthew 7:7:

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.”

St. Vincent is making a pointed argument: if grace comes to the elect unilaterally, with no asking, seeking, or knocking required or even possible, then Christ’s own instructions to His disciples become decorative.

This is the closest the Commonitorium ever comes to a direct hit, and yet it’s still anonymous. Compare that to how St. Vincent handles Pelagius, Nestorius, Photinus, and Apollinaris elsewhere in the same treatise. Conversely, St. Augustine gets no name, no chapter, no formal condemnation, just this one unattributed jab. Draw your own conclusions about whether that’s caution, or simply respect. Perhaps it’s both.

St. Vincent’s canon and how St. Augustine’s doctrine fails it

The whole argument only works because St. Vincent had already laid out his test two dozen chapters earlier, in the line that made him famous:

“We must hold that faith which has been believed everywhere, always, by all... This rule we shall observe if we follow universality, antiquity, consent.”

Predestination as St. Augustine taught it, in St. Vincent’s implicit judgment, cleared none of the three bars. Not universality—Gaul was in open revolt against it, and St. Vincent tells us so. Not antiquity—nowhere in his list of trustworthy teachers does he cite anyone teaching it before St. Augustine. Not consent—the very fact that Prosper had to write a formal defense of it proves it wasn’t yet the settled mind of the wider Church.

Meanwhile, St. Vincent builds toward this by leaning hard on a single verse, 1 Timothy 6:20, which he treats almost as his thesis statement:

“O Timothy, keep the deposit, avoiding profane novelties of words.”

His gloss on “the deposit” tells you exactly how he’s framing the whole controversy:

“That which has been entrusted to you, not that which you have yourself devised: a matter not of wit, but of learning; not of private adoption, but of public tradition.”

Whatever St. Vincent thought of St. Augustine’s genius—and there’s no evidence he thought little of it—his objection was structural: even a brilliant theologian’s own reasoning, however persuasive, is not the deposit. It’s devised, not received.

And St. Vincent has a category ready-made for exactly this situation: brilliant, sincere, orthodox-seeming teachers who nonetheless introduce something new. In Chapter 20, describing what a “true Catholic” does when confronted with an unfamiliar teaching from a respected source, he writes:

“Whatsoever new and unheard-of doctrine he shall find to have been furtively introduced by some one or another, besides that of all, or contrary to that of all the saints, this, he will understand, does not pertain to religion, but is permitted as a trial.”

Permitted as a trial. That word choice is significant. St. Vincent isn’t accusing St. Augustine of bad faith. His framework, borrowed straight from Deuteronomy 13, on false prophets who nonetheless perform real signs, is that God allows even faithful, gifted teachers to occasionally introduce error, specifically to test whether the rest of the Church will cling to the man or to the received faith. It’s a strikingly generous way to accuse someone of a “profane novelty” while still leaving room to call him a saint.

The lost document objecting to St. Augustine’s doctrine

There’s more direct evidence than the Commonitorium alone. A separate document survives, or rather, doesn’t survive directly, but is known to us. It's called the Objectiones Vincentianae: 16 inferences drawn from St. Augustine's own writings on predestination, framed sharply enough that Prosper of Aquitaine felt obliged to write a full formal rebuttal, the Responsiones ad Capitula Objectionum Vincentianarum. The objections themselves are lost. We only know their content through Prosper’s answers. But their author’s name is right there in the title Prosper gave them: Vincentianae.

Scholars still debate whether this is our Vincent, the monk of Lérins, or possibly another man of the same name. It’s not an airtight case. But the timing, the geography, and the theological content all point the same direction: toward the same monastery, the same decade, the same fight.

St. Vincent wasn’t the lone voice

The Gallic monks weren’t inventing a new position out of thin air—they were standing on a much older consensus, and it’s worth hearing that in the Church Fathers’ own words.

St. Cyril of Jerusalem, writing his Catechetical Lectures, circa AD 350, decades before St. Augustine’s mature writings on grace:

“The soul is self-governed: and though the devil can suggest, he has not the power to compel against the will.”

St. John Chrysostom, preaching on 1 Timothy in the AD 390s, took direct aim at exactly the kind of teaching St. Vincent would later reject. He says St. Paul:

“…guarded against that error of the unbelievers which takes away free will.”

St. Athanasius the Great, in his Life of St. Antony, put the human will's role in plain terms:

“Wherefore virtue hath need at our hands of willingness alone, since it is in us and is formed from us... For it is not far from us, nor is it without ourselves, but it is within us, and is easy if only we are willing.”

Grace and human cooperation, or what would come to be called synergy, work together. Neither cancels the other out.

St. Faustus of Riez, who succeeded Vincent as abbot of Lérins and picked up the same fight after him, stated the Gallic position about as plainly as it can be stated:

“Whosoever is lost is lost by his own fault; yet, he could have obtained salvation through grace had he cooperated with it.”

That’s not a rejection of grace. It’s a rejection of grace without cooperation, which is precisely St. Vincent’s point in Chapter 26.

Is there patristic support for St. Augustine’s position on predestination?

Fairness requires admitting the vocabulary of predestination didn’t start with St. Augustine. Two pre-Augustinian Latin writers, Marius Victorinus and Ambrosiaster, both used the word praedestinare in their commentaries on St. Paul’s epistles well before St. Augustine picked it up. So he wasn’t inventing a term out of nowhere. St. Paul’s own language in Romans 8 and Ephesians 1 had already given Latin commentators reason to use it.

But here’s where it gets interesting: the two men who used the word first didn’t mean what St. Augustine meant by it.

What St. Augustine actually cited — and what he did with it

The one genuine pre-Augustinian citation St. Augustine leans on is St. Cyprian of Carthage (d. AD 258). In On the Predestination of the Saints, Book I, chapter 3, St. Augustine writes:

“It was not thus that that pious and humble teacher thought, I speak of the most blessed Cyprian, when he said that we must boast in nothing, since nothing is our own. And in order to show this, he appealed to the apostle as a witness, where he said, ‘For what hast thou that thou hast not received?’”

That’s a line from Cyprian’s Testimonies, and St. Augustine is quoting it accurately. A few chapters later, in Book II, chapter 35, he sums up his own case:

“This is therefore the predestination which we faithfully and humbly preach.”

Between the two, notice what Cyprian’s actual words say: nothing we have is our own; all is gift. That’s a claim about the priority of grace, something every Church Father before and after St. Augustine affirmed. It’s not, on its own, a claim about a fixed elect chosen unilaterally without any human asking, seeking, or knocking—which is the specific, narrower claim St. Vincent rejected. St. Augustine is reading his mature doctrine of predestination back into a sentence about the priority of grace, a much older and much less controversial idea. Every side of this argument, Gaul included, agreed grace comes first. The fight was over what happens next.

St. Ambrose: St. Augustine’s bishop

Here’s a line from St. Ambrose, and it doesn’t support the Augustinian reading. It supports St. Vincent’s. In his Exposition of the Christian Faith, Book V, chapter 83, commenting on Romans 8:29, St. Ambrose writes:

“Whom He did foreknow, He also did predestinate. He did not predestinate them before He knew them, but He did predestinate the reward of those whose merits He foreknew.”

That’s about as clean a statement of the foreknowledge-of-merit reading as you’ll find anywhere in the Fathers, Latin or Greek. St. Ambrose, St. Augustine’s own bishop, the man who baptized him, read Romans 8:29 to mean God’s predestination follows from and responds to what He foreknows a person will do, not the reverse. Medieval scholastics knew this text was awkward for the Augustinian tradition; Thomas Aquinas quotes this very line from St. Ambrose as an objection he has to work to answer in Summa Theologiae I, Q.23, Art. 5.

Ambrosiaster: the strongest witness against St. Augustine

Ambrosiaster, the anonymous 4th-century Roman commentator whose real name we’ve lost, hence the label “pseudo-Ambrose,” wrote a full commentary on Romans decades before St. Augustine’s mature anti-Pelagian works. On Romans 9:11–16, he uses some form of the word “foreknowledge” 15 times, hammering the point that Jacob and Esau were chosen and rejected based on God foreseeing their free, autonomous future actions, not on a bare, unconditioned decree:

“Paul proclaims God's foreknowledge in these matters, because nothing else can happen other than what God knows will happen. For through his knowledge of what each of them will be in the future, he said: 'This one will be worthy... and the one who will be older will be unworthy.' He chose one and rejected the other as a result of his foreknowledge... he condemns no one before they should sin, and he crowns no one before they should conquer.”

Here’s the part that matters most for the Gaul-versus-Hippo story: this wasn’t a fringe reading Prosper and the Gallic monks cooked up under pressure. Prosper of Aquitaine, St. Augustine’s loyal defender, the man who carried word of the Gallic unrest to Hippo in AD 428, admitted in that very letter that the received, pre-existing consensus among earlier interpreters of Scripture was that predestination meant God’s foreknowledge of freely chosen human action. Prosper wasn’t reporting a novelty invented by St. Augustine’s opponents. He was reporting that St. Augustine’s opponents were holding the position everyone used to hold, and that St. Augustine’s doctrine was the new one.

Origen: an earlier and more complicated witness

Push back nearly two centuries and you find Origen (d. c. AD 253) already framing predestination as God’s foreknowledge of each rational creature’s merits. This needs a caveat: Origen tied that foreknowledge to his idiosyncratic and later-condemned doctrine of the soul’s pre-existence, the idea that souls earned their present station through choices made before this life. The Fifth Ecumenical Council (Constantinople II, AD 553) anathematized that specific teaching. So Origen is real evidence that “predestination equals foreknowledge of freely chosen merit” predates St. Augustine by two centuries, but Origen is not a clean witness to lean the whole case on.

Bottom Line

The word predestination is older than St. Augustine—Victorinus and Ambrosiaster both used it before him. But the specific doctrine St. Vincent was rejecting in Chapter 26—grace given to a fixed elect, unilaterally, with no real place for human asking, seeking, or knocking—doesn’t have the pedigree St. Augustine’s later defenders claimed for it. Run the actual sources and the pre-Augustinian consensus is not divided or ambiguous on the narrow point St. Vincent was arguing.

St. Cyprian’s words address the priority of grace, not the mechanics of election, and don’t reach the specific claim in dispute. St. Ambrose states the foreknowledge-of-merit position outright. Ambrosiaster states it at even greater length and with more force, and Prosper of Aquitaine, St. Augustine’s own courier, concedes it was the standing interpretation before the saint wrote a word on the subject. Origen had already been saying something similar a full two centuries earlier, tangled up with a different, condemned doctrine, but pointing the same direction.

On the narrower and sharper point—not “does grace come first,” which nobody disputed, but “is grace given to an unconditioned, fixed elect with no place for human response”—the pre-Augustinian record supports Saints Vincent, Cyril, Chrysostom, Athanasius, and Ambrose, not the saint from Hippo.

Why This Matters

It’s tempting, from this distance, to file this away as a technical squabble between two dead theologians about a doctrine many modern Christians have never carefully contemplated. But consider what’s actually happening here: a monk, writing from inside the same Church that St. Augustine belonged to, looked at his teaching on grace, a teaching that would go on to shape the entire trajectory of Western theology of both Catholics and Protestants alike, and measured it against the teachings of the Early Church as articulated in his canon:

Believed everywhere. Always. By all.

And it failed.

All of this doesn’t mean St. Vincent thought St. Augustine was a heretic in the Pelagian sense, or any other sense for that matter—he clearly didn’t; the Commonitorium rejects Pelagius with real force. But because a doctrine that was landing, even among faithful ascetic monks, as something close to fatalism looked to St. Vincent like exactly the kind of “profane novelty” his whole treatise was written to guard against.

One man cannot create doctrine that the whole Christian Church must accept.

Two years later, the English scholar Samuel Prideaux Tregelles was allowed into the same reading room to look at the same manuscript, under conditions that read less like scholarship and more like a prisoner visitation. He was searched before he was permitted to open it. His pen, ink, and paper were confiscated at the door. Two priests sat with him the entire time, keeping him in conversation in Latin, and if he lingered too long over a single passage, the book was taken out of his hands. In his own words, they would not let him open it:

“…without searching my pockets, and depriving me of pen, ink, and paper; and at the same time two prelati kept me in constant conversation in Latin, and if I looked at a passage too long, they would snatch the book out of my hand.”

This is Codex Vaticanus, designated B, or 03, in the standard numbering of New Testament manuscripts. But unlike Codex Sinaiticus, it was never lost in a monastery, never mistaken for scrap, never scraped down and written over like Codex Ephraemi Rescriptus (see Part III). Instead, it sat in the Vatican Library, catalogued and known, for 400 years before anyone outside Rome got a serious look at what was actually written on its pages.

This isn’t a story about erasure. It’s a story about a door that stayed shut for centuries, on purpose, by people who understood exactly what they were guarding.

What is Codex Vaticanus

Palaeographers date Codex Vaticanus to the first half of the 4th century AD, most commonly to somewhere around AD 300–330, which would make it slightly older than Codex Sinaiticus, which is its only real rival for the title of oldest surviving complete Greek Bible. Together they are the two earliest manuscripts in existence that contain both the Septuagint Old Testament and the New Testament bound as a single book, in the language the earliest Christians actually read and wrote.

Tischendorf originally proposed that three different scribes worked on the manuscript. Later palaeographical work, particularly by T.C. Skeat, narrowed that to two: one scribe (A) working alongside a second (B) on the Old Testament, with scribe B going on to copy the entire New Testament alone. The text is laid out in a distinctive three-column format per page, in a clean, unadorned uncial hand, without the illumination or decoration later medieval Bibles are known for.

It is, by design, a working text rather than a display piece.

How Did Vaticanus Get to Rome?

Its origin is genuinely uncertain.

F.J.A. Hort argued for Rome. Others, including Rendel Harris and J. Armitage Robinson, argued for Asia Minor. The more common scholarly opinion today favors Egypt, and Skeat himself later suggested Caesarea as an alternative. Robinson noticed something suggestive: both Vaticanus and Sinaiticus share an unusual, specific system of chapter divisions in the margins of Acts, one otherwise found only in two Latin Vulgate manuscripts, Codex Amiatinus (AD 700) and Codex Fuldensis (AD 546).

That shared oddity has led some scholars to wonder whether the two codices sat together in the same ancient library before going their separate ways—one destined for a monastery on Mount Sinai, the other for Rome.

However it arrived, Vaticanus came to Italy sometime around or after the Council of Florence (see The Man Who Wouldn’t Sign), possibly out of Constantinople, and it appears in the Vatican Library’s earliest surviving catalogue in 1475. How, exactly, remains unrecorded.

That said, the leading suspect for how Vaticanus made the crossing is via one Cardinal Basil Bessarion, the Greek scholar who arrived in Italy for the Council of Florence and never left. Paleographer T. C. Skeat went a step further and proposed a specific courier: John Chortasmenos, a patriarchal notary in Constantinople who had been Bessarion’s own mentor. Skeat’s case rests on a small but telling detail—a minuscule supplement bound into Vaticanus is written in a hand that closely resembles one of Bessarion’s own manuscripts, suggesting the two books passed through the same hands at the same time.

Independent of the Bessarion question, there’s physical evidence the codex spent time in Constantinople itself. Vatican paleographer Paul Canart, who spent decades cataloguing the library’s Greek manuscripts, examined the decorative initials added to Vaticanus sometime in the Middle Ages and found them stylistically consistent with Constantinopolitan decoration typical of the 10th century.

They were crude enough that Canart judged they were more likely added in the 11th or 12th century by someone imitating the style rather than an original craftsman. Either way, the initials place the book in an Eastern Roman workshop tradition centuries before Florence, quietly corroborating the very route Skeat and the Bessarion theory require: not Rome or Alexandria in the medieval period, but Constantinople.

A Different Kind of Damage

Codex Ephraemi was scraped down and overwritten to make room for something else entirely. But Codex Vaticanus suffered a stranger fate: sometime in the 10th or 11th century, someone took a pen and simply traced over the fading original uncial letters, page by page, to keep the text legible as the ink aged. It preserved the words. It also obscured the original hand almost entirely, and to this day scholars have to work around a later corrector’s retracing to reconstruct what the fourth-century scribes actually wrote, letter by letter, in the handful of places the retracing hand skipped or got wrong.

The manuscript is also not complete. In the Old Testament, Genesis 1:1 through 46:28 are missing, along with a stretch of the Psalms and a short passage in 2 Samuel lost to a torn page. In the New Testament, the text runs continuously through the Gospels, Acts, the General Epistles, and the Pauline Epistles, and then simply stops partway through Hebrews 9:14. Everything after that—the remainder of Hebrews, the Pastoral Epistles, Philemon, and the entire Book of Revelation—is gone from the original hand, if it was ever there at all.

A 15th-century scribe eventually filled the gap with a supplement, cataloged separately as minuscule 1957, so that later readers would at least have a complete book in hand. Whether Revelation was ever part of the original 4th-century codex at all is something scholars still argue about; the evidence simply isn’t there to settle it.

The Long Argument Over Access

The Vatican’s caution about Codex Vaticanus wasn’t paranoia without a track record. Scholars had understood its importance since at least the 16th century, when it was used, without full publication, as a check against the printed Greek text everyone else was working from. But actually seeing the manuscript, page by page, was another matter.

Tischendorf’s six hours in 1843 came only after months of waiting. Tregelles, in 1845, wasn’t even permitted to copy a single word. The thaw that followed was gradual rather than sudden: in 1860, the English clergyman John William Burgon was permitted to examine the codex for an hour and a half—barely more generous than Tregelles 15 years earlier, but a small sign the door was easing open. Tischendorf tried again decades later and was allowed to copy roughly 20 pages before that permission, too, was revoked.

Renewed appeals eventually won him 14 days of three hours each, which he used to produce, in 1867, the fullest edition of the manuscript that had yet appeared—though it still rested on the flawed groundwork of Cardinal Angelo Mai’s earlier printed edition (1857, corrected in 1859), since Mai had beaten every other scholar to a full transcription decades before, but his edition was riddled with errors.

It would be easy to read this as obstruction for its own sake. But it’s worth remembering that the Vatican was also the institution that eventually funded and published the manuscript’s first typographical edition in 1868, and then, decades later, in 1889–1890, its first complete photographic facsimile, making the full text freely available to scholars everywhere for the first time. It was a decision that did more for New Testament textual criticism than any single scholar’s stolen afternoon in a reading room ever could.

What the Margins Are Quietly Saying

Two small details in the manuscript reward close attention. Scattered through the New Testament, mostly in the margins, are what scholars for years called “umlauts”—pairs of dots, now more precisely termed distigmai, with nearly 800 instances in the manuscript. For decades nobody knew what they meant. In 1995, while studying the manuscript’s handling of 1 Corinthians 14:34–35, the passage about women keeping silence in the churches, the scholar Philip Payne proposed that these dots were left by an early corrector to flag places where he knew of a different reading in another manuscript—in that instance, aligning with the Western textual tradition’s relocation of those verses to follow 1 Corinthians 14:40.

If Payne is right, Codex Vaticanus isn’t just a witness to one text; it’s a 4th-century record of scribes already aware that the text existed in more than one form, and choosing, dot by dot, to mark the uncertainty rather than silently resolve it.

The second detail is smaller, more human, and on closer inspection, less flattering to the note-writer than it first appears. Beside Hebrews 1:3, on page 1512, a marginal hand left a note in Greek: ἀμαθέστατε καὶ κακέ, ἄφες τὸν παλαιόν, μὴ μεταποίει—“Fool and knave, leave the old reading and do not change it!” The obvious reading is a scribe scolding a corrector across the centuries for tampering with sacred text. But the correction being scolded was, by every other measure available to textual critics, the right one: the original scribe had written Φανερων (“manifests”), a later corrector fixed it to Φέρων (“bears,” or “upholds”), matching every other surviving witness including Papyrus 46.

Codex Sinaiticus reads the same way. The furious note-writer, in other words, wasn’t defending the truth against corruption; he was defending an error against a correction, out of what looks like pure attachment to the text he’d grown used to. It’s a rare, unguarded glimpse of one scribe scolding another, in the margin of a page neither of them could have imagined would still be read 1,600 years later. And it’s a quiet reminder that zeal for “the old reading” isn’t the same thing as zeal for the true one.

Why This Matters

Codex Ephraemi’s story is about carelessness. A Bible triaged away by people who didn’t know or didn’t care what they were writing over. Codex Vaticanus has the opposite problem. Here the Church knew precisely what she had. She kept it, catalogued it, and for centuries decided that keeping it safe meant keeping it closed.

Both choices come from the same place: parchment is not self-preserving, and every generation has to decide, actively, what stewardship of Scripture actually requires. Sometimes that means guarding a manuscript so closely that a scholar’s pockets get searched before he’s allowed to open it. But the manuscript survived either way. What it cost, in both cases, was time. Centuries passed during which the wider Church did not yet have full access to one of the oldest and most complete witnesses to her own Scriptures.

Underneath those ancient sermons was one of the oldest and most important Greek Bibles in existence.

This is the story of Codex Ephraemi Rescriptus. And unlike Codex Sinaiticus (see Part I), or Syriac Sinaiticus (see Part II), this isn’t a story about discovery. It’s a story about erasure, and about what the Church loses when it treats her own witnesses carelessly.

What “Rescriptus” Actually Means

Codex Ephraemi Rescriptus (siglum C, or 04 in the Gregory-Aland system) is a 5th-century Greek manuscript containing both Old and New Testament text. It belongs to the same rarified company as Codex Vaticanus, Codex Alexandrinus, and Codex Sinaiticus—the four great uncial codices of the Greek Bible. If you’ve ever opened a critical apparatus at the bottom of a modern Greek New Testament and seen the letter C cited as a witness, this is the manuscript to which it’s pointing.

But somewhere around the 12th century, someone in the Eastern Roman world made a decision that makes all lovers of old books cringe: they took this Bible, scraped the ink off its parchment pages, and reused them to copy out 38 Greek translations of the treatises of St. Ephraem the Syrian.

St. Ephraem was not some obscure monk whose name history happened to attach to a scraped Bible. He was a deacon of Nisibis and later Edessa, reposed by AD 373, and by the time this palimpsest was made in the 12th century, he had already been venerated for many centuries as one of the great poet-theologians of the Early Church.

He’s the man the Eastern Roman tradition called “the Harp of the Spirit” for his hymns on the Nativity, on Paradise, and against heresies. His works were still being actively copied, translated into Greek from his native Syriac, and read in monastic communities 800 after his death. That’s the context that matters here: the 12th-century scribe wasn’t reaching for filler. He was reaching for a Father whose reputation, at that moment, outweighed the reputation of an old, worn Bible sitting in a scriptorium. For reference, a scriptorium was a room in medieval European monasteries where monks and scribes hand-copied, decorated, and preserved manuscripts.

Parchment was very expensive and vellum doesn’t grow on trees. It literally comes from calfskin, and a full Bible could require the hides of an entire herd. When an old book became inconvenient, damaged, or simply less useful than a text someone wanted more urgently, the pragmatic medieval solution was to wash it, scrape it, and write over it. Manuscripts recycled this way are called palimpsests, from the Greek for “scraped again.”

Codex Ephraemi is, by consensus, the single most important biblical palimpsest that survives.

But the erasure is never total. Ink soaks into fiber. Even after washing, faint ghost-traces of the original biblical text remained underneath the new writing. The original writing is still legible if you have the patience of a saint and access to strong enough light.

What Actually Survives, and What Doesn’t

It’s worth being precise about what this manuscript is, because “One of the four great uncials” makes it sound more complete than it is. Of the four, Ephraemi is by far the most damaged. Only 209 leaves survive—145 from the New Testament, 64 from the Old—out of what would originally have been a complete two-Testament Bible running to several hundred more leaves than that.

On the New Testament side, the losses are uneven in an interesting way. Every New Testament book is represented in what survives except two: 2 Thessalonians and 2 John. Nobody knows whether those two books were deliberately left out of the original 5th-century codex or simply didn’t survive the centuries of handling before the palimpsesting even began. The Old Testament fared far worse. Of the entire Septuagint (LXX), only six books have any leaves surviving at all: Job, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs, Wisdom of Solomon, and Ecclesiasticus (Sirach). Genesis, Exodus, the Psalms, the Prophets are all gone, if they were ever there.

There’s also a quieter piece of evidence buried in the gaps themselves. The two leaves that would have contained John 7:3–8:34 are missing entirely, but scholars have been able to count the lines on the surrounding pages and calculate how much text the manuscript’s format required per leaf. The math doesn’t leave room for the Pericope Adulterae—the account of the woman taken in adultery in John 7:53–8:11—to have fit on the missing pages alongside everything else that had to be there.

That’s not proof the passage was absent from Ephraemi originally, but it’s a real textual argument, and it’s the same passage whose absence or presence is debated across several early witnesses. By contrast, the longer ending of Mark, 16:9–20, is present and intact on folio 148r, so no ambiguity there.

For clarity, a folio is a single leaf (sheet) of a manuscript or book, counted as one physical unit even though it has two sides—a front (recto) and a back (verso). So folio 148r means it’s the recto (front) side of the 148th leaf.

Why Does the Erasure Matter Theologically

It’s tempting to read this story and feel a kind of righteous horror at the 12th century scribe who scraped a Bible to make room for sermons, as if this were a uniquely medieval act of carelessness toward Scripture. But let’s be careful here. The scribe almost certainly thought he was preserving something valuable too: the words of a canonized Father of the Church, copied at real expense onto materials that were themselves already sacred. He wasn’t discarding the holy to make room for the profane. He was choosing between two things he considered holy, and Scripture happened to lose that particular round.

That’s the uncomfortable lesson underneath the parchment. The Church has never had unlimited resources to preserve everything she values, and every generation makes triage decisions about what gets copied, bound, scraped down, and reused. Codex Ephraemi survived not because anyone especially protected it as Scripture, but because a text considered important enough to preserve happened to be written on the back of one.

A Journey With No Rescue Scene

Here’s what makes Ephraemi’s story different from Tischendorf pulling Sinaiticus out of a wastebasket at St. Catherine’s Monastery: this manuscript was never lost. It has an almost boringly continuous paper trail.

Its origin is uncertain, though Egypt is the leading candidate for where it was originally copied, somewhere around AD 425–450. Wherever it started, it eventually made its way into the Eastern Roman world, and it was still there when Constantinople fell to the Ottomans in 1453—an event that scattered Greek manuscripts westward as eastern scholars fled with whatever they could carry. Ephraemi went with them, landing in Florence, where it came into the possession of Niccolò Ridolfi, Cardinal of Florence, until his death in 1550.

From there it was purchased, probably by the Italian military leader Piero Strozzi, on behalf of Catherine de’ Medici—who brought the manuscript to France as part of her dowry when she married the future King Henry II. From the Bourbon royal library, it eventually settled into what is now the Bibliothèque nationale de France, where it remains today. It was rebound in 1602, which indicates the manuscript was being maintained and handled as a valued object, centuries before anyone there apparently thought to check what was under the visible text.

Let’s read that timeline again. This Bible crossed from Egypt into the Eastern Roman Empire, then into Renaissance Florence, then into the French royal court, then into the National Library of France. And at every single step along the way, it was quietly filed as a book of sermons. Nobody along that chain thought to ask what was underneath the ink.

Someone Finally Looked Closer

The first person to notice something was off was Pierre Allix, a French Protestant pastor, who spotted traces of older writing beneath the visible text. That tip eventually reached scholars like Bernard de Montfaucon and Jean Boivin, who confirmed there was a buried biblical text worth pursuing.

The first serious attempt to actually read it belongs to Johann Jakob Wettstein, who in 1716 undertook a full collation of the New Testament portion for the English classicist Richard Bentley. According to Bentley’s own correspondence, the work was punishing—it took Wettstein roughly two hours to read a single page, and Bentley paid him 50 pounds for the labor, a considerable sum in the period. Wettstein used what he’d found in his own 1751–1752 Greek New Testament, but a full, complete reading of both Testaments still eluded scholarship for another century.

That fell to Constantin von Tischendorf, working entirely by eye and by chemical reagent between 1840 and 1843, publishing his New Testament edition in 1843 and the Old Testament portion in 1845—a full 15 years before he would make his name at St. Catherine’s Monastery. If you’ve read my piece on Sinaiticus, this is the same relentless palaeographer, doing the same brutal work, a decade and a half earlier and on a manuscript that never needed “discovering” in the first place, only reading. Regardless of his personal ethics, Tischendorf was a beast of a historian and palaeographer.

Of the 209 leaves that survive, roughly 60% of the New Testament text has been successfully recovered. Tischendorf’s eye-only method wasn’t perfect; Robert W. Lyon published a list of corrections to Tischendorf’s readings in 1959, and even modern ultraviolet and multispectral imaging still can’t recover everything the scraping destroyed. Some of what this Bible once said is simply gone, permanently, and no technology will bring it back.

The Recovery Isn’t Finished

That last point deserves an update, because the work on this manuscript didn’t stop with Tischendorf, and it isn’t merely historical. Researchers at the Kirchliche Hochschule Wuppertal have produced multispectral images of Codex C, re-photographing the leaves under different light bands to pull up ink traces that neither Tischendorf’s chemical reagents, nor ordinary photography can reach. Combined with the high-resolution digitizations the Bibliothèque nationale de France has made freely available through its Gallica platform, scholars have been going back through Tischendorf’s 180-year-old readings line by line—and finding places where he was simply wrong, misled by faint or overlapping ink he had no way to separate. This is not a closed case. A manuscript that was misfiled for three centuries and then read by eye and acid for another is now, slowly, being read again by light.

We are the beneficiaries of centuries of exactly this kind of triage. Decisions made by scribes and cardinals and queens who had no idea a 5th century Bible was riding along, silently, underneath the object they actually valued. Perhaps that’s its own kind of providence. The text didn’t survive because the Church guarded it as precious. It survived because something else got recycled onto its back, and 300 years later, a Protestant pastor with sharp eyes noticed the ghost of older ink and couldn’t let it go.

In the winter of 1892, two middle-aged Scottish widows rode into the Sinai desert with 11 Bedouin helpers, a Syrian Christian guide named Hanna, photographic equipment, and a tip from a Cambridge orientalist about a dark closet nobody had properly searched.

They had no university degrees and no institutional sponsor. No promissory note from a foreign government.

What they had was 12 languages they could speak between them, a working knowledge of Syriac—a dialect of the Aramaic that Jesus spoke—and an unshakeable conviction that God had put evidence for His Church in the desert, and that someone needed to go get it.

Who Were These Women?

Agnes and Margaret Smith were born in 1843 in Irvine, Scotland. Identical twins, their mother died within weeks of their birth. Their father, John Smith, was a lawyer and an amateur linguist with an unusual theory about daughters: they deserved an education.

He backed it up with a promise. He would take them to any country whose language they learned.

The twins took this seriously. French, German, Spanish, Italian—each one earned a journey. By the time John Smith died in 1866, leaving them a substantial inheritance, his daughters were fluent in the languages of nearly half of Europe, deeply read, and very independent.

They moved to London. Then to Cambridge, where Agnes met and married Samuel Lewis, a university librarian at Corpus Christi College. Through him they found their way into the scholarly world of biblical languages and ancient manuscripts. It was a world that received them with the polite condescension reserved for women who clearly knew too much.

Both husbands died fairly early after marriage. Agnes’s within four years. Margaret’s within three. By 1891, both were widowed, and they settled together in Cambridge. They began looking for something to do with their grief and their gifts.

Agnes began studying Syriac. And importantly for our story, both sisters learned to operate a camera and develop photographic plates.

What They Were Looking For

The Codex Sinaiticus had answered a very important question: the 4th-century Greek New Testament matched the historical Christian tradition. But scholars knew that the Greek manuscripts were all within the same textual family—the Alexandrian tradition, representing the Western and Egyptian Churches.

But what about the Eastern Church?

The earliest Christian communities in Syria, Mesopotamia, and Persia had read the Gospels in Syriac, a dialect of Aramaic, the language Christ and His Apostles almost certainly spoke in daily life. If a very early Syriac Gospel translation survived, it would be a witness to a completely different transmission line, independent of the Greek manuscripts, reaching back toward the Aramaic-speaking fountainhead of the Faith.

Scholars knew such a text might exist and they had been looking for it for decades.

James Rendel Harris, a Cambridge orientalist who had already visited St. Catherine’s Monastery, gave Agnes and Margaret a specific tip before they departed. He told them that there was a dark closet beneath the archbishop’s room containing two chests of Syriac manuscripts that he hadn’t been able to examine properly on his visit.

And someone needed to take a close look at what was in those chests.

The Monastery That Remembered Tischendorf

St. Catherine’s Monastery at the foot of Mount Sinai is one of the oldest continuously inhabited Christian monasteries on earth. It was built by order of the Emperor Justinian in the 6th century, at the site where Moses encountered the burning bush, at the foot of the mountain where God gave the Law.

It is also, as of 1844, a monastery with a complicated relationship with Western scholars who arrive claiming to be friends of the manuscripts.

Why? Theft is the answer.

Tischendorf (see Part I) had left with 347 leaves of their greatest treasure and a receipt that was never honored. The monks at St. Catherine’s were not naive, and they had every reason to be suspicious of European academics turning up with cameras and credential letters.

So when the sisters and their entourage arrived, Agnes got through the door for one reason: she spoke Modern Greek. She had learned it on the twins’ 1883 trip to Athens, the beginning of what would become, in the Wikipedia entry’s phrasing:

“…a lifelong affectionate relationship with Greek Orthodoxy, especially the monks in office at Saint Catherine’s Monastery.”

She could speak with the Fathers. She could read their letters. She had visited before. She was not another German scholar with a promissory note.

So they trusted her and that trust is what made everything that followed possible.

The Closet

After a week of travel by camel from Cairo, which was no small thing for two women in their late 40s, camping in tents in the Sinai winter, Agnes and Margaret arrived at the monastery and requested access to the library.

The monastery’s librarian, Father Galaktion, directed them to a dark, neglected closet containing two chests stacked with discarded volumes. It was full of manuscripts that hadn’t been properly catalogued. And pages that hadn’t been turned in generations.

Agnes began to work through the pile.

She noticed a dirty volume with its leaves largely stuck together. The outer text was in Syriac; it was a collection of lives of women saints and martyrs. Valuable, perhaps, but not what she was looking for. Then she took a closer look.

It was a palimpsest.

A palimpsest is a parchment that’s been recycled. Ancient vellum was expensive, so when a manuscript outlived its perceived usefulness, the text could be scraped or washed off and the parchment reused. The old writing was gone…mostly. Traces of ink remained in the fibers. Ghost text, visible if you knew what you were looking for and knew how to read it.

Agnes knew Syriac. She could read the ghost.

Beneath the lives of the women saints, she found column headings in a different, older hand. She could make out “Of Matthew” and “Of Luke.”

She was holding a Syriac Gospel that had been hidden under a medieval hagiography for over 1,000 years!

What She Found

The lives of women saints written over the undertext had been copied in AD 698. That dated the overwriting. The Gospel underneath, Agnes reasoned, had to be older still. Significantly older, since no one would recycle a manuscript still in active liturgical use. The undertext was in Estrangela script, one of the oldest forms of written Syriac, which placed the manuscript’s copying in the 4th or 5th century. But the translation it preserved—the Syriac rendering of the Greek Gospels that the scribe had copied from—reached back further still, into the 2nd century, very close to the beginning of the Church.

What she had found is the oldest extant copy of the Gospels in any language.

Not the oldest Greek copy—that was Tischendorf’s Codex Sinaiticus. The oldest copy in any language. A 4th-century Syriac manuscript preserving a translation tradition that predated the Greek manuscripts Tischendorf had found.

The twins couldn’t be certain of what they had. But they were certain enough. They used nearly all of their photographic film on the palimpsest, page by careful page, and rode their camels back to Cairo.

Cambridge Receives the News Poorly

Back in England, Agnes and Margaret brought their photographs to the Cambridge scholars they knew through their late husbands’ academic connections. They were, predictably, ignored.

Two middle-aged Presbyterian widows from Scotland, without degrees, with photographs of what they claimed was the most significant manuscript find since Tischendorf. The Cambridge set was not immediately moved.

Until someone looked at the photographs properly.

Then suddenly everyone was very interested…and very busy positioning themselves to be part of what came next. A team of world-class scholars was rapidly assembled: Professors Robert Bensly, Francis Crawford Burkitt, and Rendel Harris, joined by Agnes and Margaret as the people who had, inconveniently, actually found the text. They would return to St. Catherine’s in 1893 to transcribe the manuscript in full.

The academic politics were bitter. Bensly and Burkitt resented the presence of Harris, who had only been invited because Agnes insisted on it. The professors worked in the freezing cold, quarreling with one another over credit and method. Agnes and Margaret, who actually knew Syriac, helped with the transcription. Margaret catalogued other manuscripts, a task the archbishop assigned to the twins, recognizing their competence and their Greek.

But there was another problem. The undertext of a palimpsest, by definition, had been scraped and overwritten. In places it had faded past legibility. No amount of scholarly expertise could read what wasn’t visible.

Agnes had bought a chemical reagent, the kind used in the British Museum to recover faded text. Over the objections of Bensly, the hesitations of Harris, and her own considerable doubts, she applied it to one of the leaves.

The ghost text came alive.

The oldest Gospel in any language became readable because a Scottish widow trusted her training, ignored the call for her to be careful, and put the reagent on the page.

The Academy’s Long Memory

When the 1893 expedition returned from Sinai, the newspapers were thrilled. The twin adventuresses, the unlikely manuscript hunters, the women who had beaten the professors to the greatest find in a generation, were public figures overnight.

The Cambridge academy was less enthusiastic.

The twins were soon largely forgotten figures, often unfairly portrayed as no more than eccentric women who had accidentally stumbled onto something valuable. The scholars who transcribed the manuscript got the publication credits. The professors who had initially ignored the photographs wrote the authoritative papers.

Agnes wrote her own account: How the Codex Was Found: A Narrative of Two Visits to Sinai from Mrs. Lewis’s Journals, 1892–1893. It is exactly what it says it is—a primary source record, in her own voice, of what actually happened.

The universities caught up eventually. Though Cambridge never granted them degrees, they received honorary degrees from the universities of Halle, Heidelberg, Dublin, and St. Andrews, and both were honored with the Triennial gold medal of the Royal Asiatic Society—the blue riband of oriental research—in 1915.

Margaret died in 1920. Agnes in 1926. They are buried in different cities, alongside husbands who had each died within a few years of marrying them.

The Significance of the Syriac Sinaiticus

The Syriac Sinaiticus is the formal name given to Agnes’s palimpsest. It did not disprove the New Testament. It confirmed that the Biblical tradition was consistent.

In its essential witness, the four Gospels in Syriac match the four Gospels in Greek. The narrative is the same. Christ is the same. The Faith is the same.

But it adds something important. In several places, the Syriac Sinaiticus preserves readings that appear closer to what early Church Fathers quoted from memory than to the later standardized Greek manuscripts. It represents an independent transmission line. Indeed a second witness traveling through a different language and a different geography, arriving at the same destination.

The discovery was made at St. Catherine’s Monastery, which is Greek Orthodox. That monastery has continuously operated since the 6th century, custodian of the burning bush, keeper of manuscripts through the rise of Islam, the Crusades, the Ottoman centuries, and the modern era. The manuscript had been sitting in their library the whole time, hidden under a saint’s life, waiting for someone who knew enough Syriac to read the ghost text beneath.

The monks had not lost it; they had kept it. It was the Western scholars, arriving with their credentials and their certainty about what they were looking for, who had walked past it repeatedly. The man who found the Codex Sinaiticus—the celebrated Tischendorf, the hero of biblical scholarship—had been in that same building, in those same rooms, and had not discovered it.

It took two women who had learned an ancient language and had a burning passion to find the truth.

Why This Matters

Agnes and Margaret understood something the Victorian academy, in its confidence, kept missing: the manuscripts weren’t trophies. They were witnesses to the Ancient Church.

Tischendorf took the manuscript. Agnes and Margaret did something different: they photographed it, brought the photographs home, and then returned with a team to copy it properly, leaving the Syriac Sinaiticus at St. Catherine’s, where it remains to this today.

The twins used their inheritance to fund Westminster College in Cambridge, endowing the training of Presbyterian ministers long after their deaths. They published dozens of scholarly volumes, made nine trips to Egypt and Sinai, and catalogued manuscripts that hadn’t been opened in centuries.

Agnes’s discovery of the Syriac Sinaiticus was the most important manuscript find since Tischendorf found the Codex Sinaiticus in 1859. The twins’ work cataloging the Arabic and Syriac manuscripts at Saint Catherine’s Monastery was incalculable.

When the newspapers came looking for the story, the Cambridge professors were ready to take credit. But Agnes had written it down first.

The best biography of the twins is Janet Soskice’s The Sisters of Sinai: How Two Lady Adventurers Discovered the Hidden Gospels (2009). Agnes’s own account, How the Codex Was Found, was published in 1893 and is available through Cambridge Library Collection. The Syriac Sinaiticus remains at St. Catherine’s Monastery, which—unlike the British Library—never had to buy back what was always theirs. You can watch a video on this here.

His name was Constantin von Tischendorf. He was brilliant, ambitious, devout, and—depending on whom you ask—possibly a thief.

This is his story.

But it’s not only his story because the same monastery, the same dusty library, and the same questions that drove him there would draw two other searchers 48 years later. Searchers that nobody expected. But we’ll get to them in part II.

The Crisis That Sent Him to St. Catherine’s

To understand why von Tischendorf mattered, you have to understand what was happening in German universities in the 1830s and 40s.

Ferdinand Christian Baur, a theologian at the University of Tübingen, had developed what became known as the Tübingen School. Applying Hegel’s philosophy of history to the New Testament, Baur argued that most of the New Testament had been composed in the 2nd century—generations after the Apostles—as a kind of theological compromise document between warring Jewish-Christian and Gentile-Christian factions. The Gospels, in his reading, weren’t eyewitness accounts or early traditions. They were late, tendentious, and largely invented.

Baur’s teaching was characterized by its anti-supernaturalistic attitude to history, tendency criticism in the interpretation of biblical writings, and the use of idealist philosophy. The aim of his circle was, in the words of critics, to explain the origin of Christianity by natural causes alone.

This was not merely an academic dispute. It was an attack on the historical credibility of the faith itself. Tischendorf’s response was not to write counter-arguments. To his credit, it was to go find the actual manuscripts.

His reasoning was simple: if the New Testament had been composed late, corrupted, and embellished over centuries, the oldest surviving manuscripts would show the corruption. But if the oldest texts matched the later ones, if the early witnesses agreed with the tradition, then Baur’s theory collapsed against physical evidence.

A committed Lutheran scholar deeply devoted to uncovering the most ancient forms of the Biblical text, Tischendorf maintained a conservative approach to textual criticism. He was not looking for problems. He was looking for proof.

He was 29 years old when he first set out on his ancient adventure.

The Trash Basket Story

In 1844, Tischendorf journeyed to the Monastery of St. Catherine at Mount Sinai, one of the oldest continuously functioning Christian monasteries in the world, founded in the 6th century under the orders of Emperor and St. Justinian I. The monastery contained a vast library of ancient texts, including Greek, Syriac, Arabic, and Coptic manuscripts, preserved in part due to the monastery’s isolation in the Sinai desert.

He had traveled there on camel back from Cairo. The monastery sat at the foot of the mountain where Moses received the Law. It had been sheltering monks—and their manuscripts—for 13 centuries.

What happened next, Tischendorf later described in his own words. He claimed that he noticed some leaves of parchment in what was designated as rubbish to be burned in the ovens of the monastery. He looked closer and what he saw stopped him cold. Constantin von Tischendorf, Codex Sinaiticus: The Ancient Biblical Manuscript (London: British Museum, 1866):

"In visiting the library of the monastery, in the month of May, 1844, I perceived in the middle of the great hall a large and wide basket full of old parchments; and the librarian, who was a man of information, told me that two heaps of papers like this, mouldered by time, had been already committed to the flames. What was my surprise to find amid this heap of papers a considerable number of sheets of a copy of the Old Testament in Greek, which seemed to me to be one of the most ancient that I had ever seen."

The leaves of a 4th-century Greek Bible; the oldest he had ever seen! The script, the vellum quality, the textual form: everything pointed to a manuscript of staggering antiquity. He was holding pages that had been written while the Council of Nicaea was within living memory.

He convinced them to allow him to take 43 sheets. But his lively satisfaction had aroused the monks’ suspicions as to the value of the manuscript, and he could not get them to yield up possession of the remainder.

He took what he could. He published the 43 leaves back in Leipzig, naming the find after his royal patron. He told almost no one where he had found them, listing the source only as “a monastery in the Orient.” Then he went back…twice.

Three Visits, One Obsession

In 1853, he only found one small scrap of this codex, apparently serving as a bookmark. The rest was gone or hidden. He left empty-handed.

By 1859, he had secured something better than academic prestige: the patronage of Tsar Alexander II of Russia. On February 4, 1859, a monk revealed the remaining sheets of Codex Sinaiticus to Tischendorf. This time Tischendorf was careful to contain his delight, but he did request permission to borrow the manuscript in order to make an identical copy.

What he had found, in full, was extraordinary. The manuscript originally contained the complete Greek Bible, both the Old Testament and the New Testament, as well as at least two early Christian writings later considered not to belong to the New Testament canon, namely the Epistle of Barnabas and the Shepherd of Hermas. Today, portions of the Old Testament have been lost, but the whole of the New Testament has been preserved, and Codex Sinaiticus provides the only complete copy of the Greek New Testament that pre-dates the 9th century.

This was what Tischendorf had spent 15 years chasing across deserts and monastery libraries. This was the answer to Baur. Its unearthing provided access to a Greek text approximately 700 years earlier than anything Erasmus or the King James translators had worked from. And it agreed, in its essential witness, with the tradition.

Later Tischendorf wrote that when he first saw the full codex that February evening, he was so overcome he could not sleep. He spent the night transcribing it.

What the Codex Sinaiticus Contains

The Codex Sinaiticus is not a simple document. It is a time capsule from the 4th-century Church, and what it includes tells you something important about how the Early Church thought about Scripture.

The books of the New Testament are arranged in this order: the four Gospels, the epistles of Paul (Hebrews follows 2 Thessalonians), the Acts of the Apostles, the General Epistles, and the Book of Revelation. So far, so familiar.

But then it keeps going. The Epistle of Barnabas is positioned at the end of the New Testament, following the Book of Revelation. For several centuries, the epistle was categorized among the “antilegomena”—the disputed writings. While some early Christians regarded it as Sacred Scripture, others excluded it. Eusebius of Caesarea classified it with excluded texts.

After Barnabas comes part of the Shepherd of Hermas—a lengthy early Christian apocalyptic text, widely read and in some communities venerated.

What this tells us is that in the mid-4th century, when the Codex was copied, the Christian canon was beginning to solidify, but there were still clearly differences of opinion on what was Scripture and what wasn’t. The scribe who copied Sinaiticus apparently included Barnabas and Hermas in his canon. Eusebius didn’t. The later councils didn’t.

This is a feature, not a bug. The Codex Sinaiticus is a snapshot of the living tradition discerning its own boundaries, which is precisely what the Orthodox Church has always said the canonical process looked like. Not a council voting books in and out by decree, but the Church’s consensus emerging over time, guided by the Holy Spirit.

The manuscript confirms the tradition even where it illuminates its development.

The Question That Won’t Go Away

And then comes the part that still bothers people. Especially people with icons.

After further travels in the Middle East, Tischendorf returned to Cairo and signed a receipt for the loan of the 347 leaves. In the receipt, Tischendorf stated that the purpose of the loan was to enable him to take the manuscript to Saint Petersburg and there compare his earlier transcription with the original, and he promised to return the Codex to the Monastery intact as soon as it was requested.

He never returned it.

Tischendorf claimed that the manuscript was gifted to him by the head of the monastery. The monastery later claimed, and still claims to this day, that he stole it from them. And if you visit St. Catherine’s today, there is a placard in the monastery that says exactly that.

The truth is genuinely complicated. Russian scholars contend that recently published documents, including a deed of gift dated November 13/25 and November 18/30 OS/NS, 1869 and signed by Archbishop Kallistratos and the monks of the monastery, amount to proof that the manuscript was obtained legally. But critics note that the monastery was without an archbishop when Tischendorf originally removed the manuscript in September 1859, so that even though the intention may have been legitimate, the authority to make such a gift was absent.

And then there is the trash basket story itself. The leaves were in suspiciously good condition for something found in a rubbish basket. A monk of Sinai who spoke to a scholar in 1863 stated that according to the monastery’s own librarian, the whole of Codex Sinaiticus had been in the library for many years and was marked in the ancient catalogues. A manuscript in the official catalogue does not end up in the kindling basket.

The most likely reading: Tischendorf was genuinely motivated by love of the text and defense of the faith. He was also a man of his era, operating in a world where European scholars removing manuscripts from Eastern monasteries was common practice, not scandal. He may have embellished the rescue narrative to justify what he already intended to do. He may have convinced himself that the Tsar’s guardianship was better for the manuscript than the monks’—and in the chaos of 19th-century Ottoman territories, he may even have been right.

Legendary Leipzig scholar Constantine Tischendorf died surrounded by controversy at the relatively young age of 59. The Codex passed from the Tsar’s library to the Soviet government, which sold it to the British Museum in 1933 for £100,000. It sits in the British Library today, on permanent display, digitized and freely available online.

St. Catherine’s still wants it back.

The Story Isn’t Over

Tischendorf answered the Tübingen skeptics. He put physical evidence on the table. He proved that the New Testament text the Church had always read was not a late invention—that 4th-century manuscripts agreed, in their essential witness, with what Christians had always believed.

He also left the monastery at Mount Sinai with something that wasn’t entirely his to take and left behind monks who would remember that for generations.

He left behind something else, too. A library. A dark closet. Chests of manuscripts no one had thought to examine. A story not yet finished.

Forty-eight years later, two women on camels would arrive at the same gates.

They were not scholars. Not credentialed, not sponsored by any Tsar. They were Scottish Presbyterian widows who had taught themselves more than a dozen languages because their father had promised them a trip to every country whose language they learned.

And they were about to find something Tischendorf missed.

You have probably never heard of the City of Hierapolis.

Hierapolis is one of those places where early Christian history seems to concentrate. According to the later tradition preserved in the Acts of Philip, this is where the Apostle Philip was martyred around AD 80—crucified upside down, refusing, like St. Peter before him, to be crucified in the same manner as Christ. It’s where St. Papias of Hierapolis—one of the earliest Christian writers, a man who had personally known those who had known the Apostles—served as bishop in the early 2nd century. And it’s where, according to Early Church tradition, the Apostle John spent his final years nearby in Ephesus, dying peacefully in old age after completing his Gospel and his Revelation.

Three different men, three different fates—a violent martyrdom, a quiet episcopal life spent gathering fading memories, and a long natural life closing out the Apostolic age—all converging on the same corner of Asia Minor within a single lifetime of each other.

Today Hierapolis is an archaeological site in southwestern Turkey. Its ancient Christian basilica is a ruin. Its bishop’s throne has not been occupied in centuries.

Meantime, the city of Ephesus—where St. Paul preached, where St. John the Evangelist wrote, where the Third Ecumenical Council met in AD 431 to confirm that the Virgin Mary is rightly called Theotokos, Mother of God—is now Selçuk, Turkey. The great Basilica of St. John, built by the Emperor Justinian over the Apostle’s tomb, is an open-air ruin. The site of the Council is a field.

And the city of Antioch—where the disciples were first called Christians (Acts 11:26), where Peter served as bishop before Rome, where the great St. John Chrysostom was born—is now Antakya, Turkey. Its ancient Christian community, one of the oldest on earth, was nearly destroyed by the 2023 earthquake.

The Christianity you inherited was not born in Geneva. It was not born in Rome. It was born in Asia Minor, in Syria, in North Africa—in cities that are now, almost without exception, either ruins, mosques, or Muslim-majority population centers where the Christian presence has been reduced to a remnant or erased entirely.

This did not happen by accident. And it did not happen all at once.

It happened the way St. Gregory Palamas watched it happen: city by city, church by church, bell by bell, across the span of a century that most Western Christians have never thought about, because no one ever told them it mattered.

The Geography of Early Christianity

Open your New Testament and pay attention to the geography.

St. Paul’s letters are addressed to Christian communities in Rome, Corinth, Galatia, Ephesus, Philippi, Colossae, and Thessalonica. All except Rome were located in what is now Turkey or Greece. The seven churches of Revelation—Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea—are all in western Anatolia, modern Turkey.

The great Ecumenical Councils that defined Christian doctrine met in Nicaea (AD 325 and 787), Constantinople (AD 381, 553, 680), and Ephesus (AD 431). Not one of the seven Ecumenical Councils met in the Latin West.

The theologians who shaped Christian thought—St. Ignatius of Antioch, St. Polycarp of Smyrna, St. Irenaeus of Lyon (born in Smyrna), St. John Chrysostom of Antioch, St. Basil of Caesarea, St. Gregory of Nyssa, St. Gregory the Theologian of Nazianzus, St. Cyril of Alexandria—came overwhelmingly from the eastern Mediterranean world.

The Christianity of the first millennium was not a Western religion that later spread eastward. It was an Eastern religion that later spread westward. Its heartland, its intellectual centers, its apostolic sees, its councils, its martyrs—the vast majority were in what is now Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, and Greece.

By the time Martin Luther nailed his theses to the door in Wittenberg in 1517, that entire world was either gone or going. The Reformation took place in a Western Europe that had been almost completely severed from the living Eastern tradition for over a century.

Luther did not have meaningful access to the writings of St. Gregory Palamas or to a living community capable of interpreting the hesychast tradition for him. He did not have access to the hesychast tradition, the theology of divine energies, the Eastern understanding of theosis, of human participation in the divine nature. That tradition was alive and being refined right up until the Ottoman conquest swallowed the world that carried it.

The Ecumenical Councils

Nicaea. In AD 325, Emperor Constantine convened the First Ecumenical Council in this city on the shores of Lake Ascania in northwestern Anatolia. Three hundred eighteen bishops gathered—most of them from the East, many of them bearing the physical scars of the Diocletian persecution. They condemned Arianism, which taught that the Son was a created being subordinate to the Father, and they produced the original form of the Nicene Creed: the statement that the Son is 'of one essence with the Father,' or in Greek, homoousion tō Patri.

Nicaea fell to the Ottomans in AD 1331. The church traditionally associated with the Seventh Ecumenical Council is now a mosque.

Nicomedia. The imperial capital of Emperor Diocletian, where the Great Persecution began on February 23, AD 303, on the feast of St. Polycarp. That’s when soldiers tore down the church and burned the Holy Scriptures. It’s where countless Christians were martyred rather than offer incense to the pagan gods. And it’s where the Church proved it could bleed and survive.

Nicomedia fell to the Ottomans in AD 1337. Today it is İzmit. Its martyrs are forgotten outside the Orthodox calendar.

Ephesus. Where St. Paul spent three years preaching. Where John brought the Virgin Mary after the Crucifixion, according to tradition. Where the Third Ecumenical Council met in AD 431 and confirmed the title Theotokos against Nestorius, who wanted to restrict Mary’s title to “Mother of Christ”—a distinction that sounds subtle until you understand that the whole question was whether the One born of Mary was truly God incarnate or merely a man in whom God dwelled.

Ephesus fell to Turkish forces around AD 1304 and later passed under Ottoman rule. It is now a magnificent archaeological site visited by millions of tourists every year.

Constantinople. New Rome. The city Constantine built as the Christian capital of the empire, where the Second, Fifth, and Sixth Ecumenical Councils met, where Hagia Sophia stood for nearly 1,000 years as the greatest church in all of Christendom—its dome designed to evoke the vault of heaven, its liturgy described by the envoys of Prince Vladimir of Kiev as so beautiful that they could not tell whether they were on earth or in heaven.

Constantinople fell on May 29, 1453. Sultan Mehmed II rode his horse through the doors of Hagia Sophia. By Friday prayers, it was a mosque. The last Eastern Roman Emperor, Constantine XI Palaiologos, died fighting on the walls. His body was never found.

What the Bells Said

Return for a moment to that line from the Ottoman chronicler describing what Suleiman did at Gallipoli in AD 1354:

“Where there were bells, Suleiman broke them up and cast them into fires. Thus, in place of bells there were now muezzins.”

This is not merely a description of liturgical substitution. It is a description of civilizational replacement. It was deliberate, systematic, and theologically motivated.

The bells of an Eastern Roman city called the faithful to prayer, marked the hours, rang for feasts, tolled for the dead. They were the acoustic signature of a Christian civilization. Their destruction was not incidental to the Ottoman conquest. It was integral to it. In their place came the adhan—the call to prayer from the minaret—reshaping not just the soundscape, but the spiritual identity of the city itself.

St. Gregory Palamas heard this happening in real time. He had spent his life at Mount Athos, where the monastic bell calls monks to the divine liturgy in the darkness before dawn. He knew what the bells meant and he knew what their silence meant.

As noted in Part I, when St. Gregory wrote that the Ottomans believed God approved of what they were doing, he was not expressing outrage at military defeat. He was identifying something more precise: a theological system in which the erasure of Christian civilization was not a side effect of conquest, but its purpose. The conversion of churches was not pragmatic. It was sacramental: a declaration that the God of the Christians had been defeated by the God of the conquerors.

This is why the destruction matters beyond the political and military history. It was not simply that Christians lost territory; it was that the places where the faith had been defined, defended, and lived for over a millennium were systematically reconsecrated to a different faith. And the memory of what had been there was, in many cases, buried so deeply that many Western Christians today have no idea it ever existed.

The Severance

Here is the consequence that most directly affects Christians, no matter your specific tradition.

The Christian East did not vanish. Orthodoxy endured, including in Russia, which was never conquered by the Ottomans, and even within Ottoman-held territory itself, where the Ecumenical Patriarchate continued to function in Constantinople under the millet system, a legal status that gave Christians a recognized, if constrained, place within the empire. What collapsed was not Orthodoxy’s existence. It was the West’s living contact with it.

Before 1453, the Eastern Roman Empire had been a state Western Europe engaged with as a peer through correspondence, negotiation, and scholarly exchange. That world reached its clearest expression at the Council of Florence in 1439, where Eastern Roman delegates brought Greek theology and learning directly into dialogue with the Latin West.

After Constantinople fell, what remained east of the old frontier was no longer positioned to be in that kind of conversation. The Patriarchate survived, but as an impoverished institution operating under a non-Christian government, with the material and diplomatic capacity that had once let the Greek-speaking East engage the West as an equal now gone.

Russia, meanwhile, was consolidating its own Orthodox identity. Moscow would be raised to a Patriarchate in its own right in 1589. But it stood entirely outside the diplomatic, academic, and linguistic orbit of Western Europe. There was no channel connecting Wittenberg or Geneva to Moscow any more than there was one connecting them to a Constantinople under Ottoman rule.

What did travel west in these years was not living theology but classical inheritance—fleeing Eastern Roman scholars like Bessarion and Gemistos Plethon carried Greek manuscripts and philosophy into Renaissance Italy, fueling humanism. Nobody carried hesychasm to Wittenberg.

This is the tradition Luther, Calvin, and Zwingli had no living access to: the hesychast tradition, the theology of divine energies, the Eastern understanding of theosis, human participation in the divine nature. That tradition was not new; it was ancient. But in the 14th century, it needed a defender. When Barlaam of Calabria, who was trained in Western scholastic method, challenged the hesychasts and dismissed their claim to experience the uncreated light of Tabor, St. Gregory did not invent a new theology to answer him. He articulated, with new precision, what the Church had always believed: that God truly makes Himself known to those who seek Him, not merely in symbol or metaphor, but in reality. His victory at the Council of 1351 was not the birth of something new. It was the ancient faith, tested by controversy, standing firm. It was a landmark in a continuity that stretched back to the Apostles and forward, uninterrupted, in the East, even as the West lost its access to it.

The Reformation happened in the 1510s and 1520s, some 60 years after the fall of Constantinople. The Reformers were responding to real corruptions in the Western Church. But they were doing so without access to the Eastern alternative, not because it no longer existed, but because the channels that might have carried it to them had closed. They knew Roman Catholicism, and they rejected it. They did not know, or rather could not know, in any living way, what a church that had never gone through Rome’s particular distortions looked like: a church that had never needed to invent theosis, because it had never stopped teaching it.

This is not to say the Reformation was simply a mistake that better access to St. Gregory Palamas would have prevented. History is not that clean. But it is to say that the theological options available to Luther, Calvin, and Zwingli were artificially narrowed by a catastrophe they had not caused and did not fully understand—a catastrophe of severed contact, not of disappearance.

The Christian East was not simply a regional expression of a universal faith. It was the original expression of the faith, carried forward with less interruption than the West. When the fall of Constantinople cut the channels connecting East and West, it did not erase the Christian East.

It significantly amputated the West’s access to it.

Why St. Gregory Palamas Still Matters

The Orthodox Church has not forgotten St. Gregory. Every year, on the second Sunday of Great Lent—the Sunday following the Triumph of Orthodoxy, when the restoration of icons is celebrated—his feast is observed. He is commemorated there deliberately: first we celebrate what we believe, then the man who most powerfully defended our ability to experience what we believe.

His theology of divine energies—the insistence that God genuinely reaches toward the human person, that the light the disciples saw on Mount Tabor at the Transfiguration was real and uncreated and available to those who pursue holiness—remains one of the most distinctive and most neglected contributions of Eastern Christianity to the universal theological conversation.

For Protestant and Evangelical readers, it addresses something the Western tradition has often struggled to articulate: not just forgiveness of sins, not just legal justification, but genuine transformation. The human person is changed, illumined, and drawn into the life of God—not merely metaphorically or legally.

That is what St. Gregory had defended before his captivity—and what he continued to embody while being held by the Ottomans, while watching the bells being melted down around him.

The Bells Are Still Silent

Hagia Sophia—the Great Church, the liturgical and theological center of Eastern Christendom for nearly a millennium—was converted to a museum by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in 1935. For 85 years, it stood as neutral ground, visited by Christians, Muslims, and secular tourists alike, belonging to no one’s active worship. In 2020, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan reconverted it to a mosque. Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, whose seat is still in Constantinople, and who leads a community of a few thousand Christians in a city of 15 million, issued a statement of grief. The world noted it briefly and moved on.

Chora Church followed the same path. The Church of St. Savior in Chora—Constantinople’s other great surviving repository of Eastern Roman art, its mosaics and frescoes telling the complete life of the Virgin Mary—ranks among the finest to survive from the late Eastern Roman period, and had been a museum since 1958. In May 2024, it too was formally reconverted and reopened as a mosque, its most sacred images now curtained off during prayer times. I stood inside it ten days after it was turned back into a mosque. Thank God the Turks didn’t cover all those beautiful mosaics like the Ottomans did after the city fell.

Note that before you even reach the nave, the dome has already made its case: 16 kings of the House of David ring the Theotokos, her ancestry laid out in gold as the hinge of salvation history.

The bells of Constantinople have been silent since 1453.

St. Gregory died in 1359, 94 years before the city fell. He did not live to see the final erasure, but he saw the trajectory from inside the prison where his captors explained to him, with complete sincerity, that God approved.

St. Gregory Palamas reposed in the Lord on November 14, 1359. His feast is celebrated on November 14; for churches following the old calendar, that date currently falls on November 27 of the civil calendar. His feast is celebrated on that date each year, and again on the Second Sunday of Great Lent. Memory eternal.

They were men who had bled for what they believed during the terrible Diocletian persecution (AD 303 - 313). These scarred bishops produced the Nicene Creed, a codification of what the Church had always believed, and one that every major branch of Christianity—Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant—still recites today.

That city was Nicaea.

Today it’s called İznik. The church where those bishops gathered now lies partially submerged in Lake Iznik, its ancient walls open to the sky, its foundations swallowed by water. The city's most prominent standing church was converted to a mosque centuries ago, then reconverted to a functioning mosque in 2011 for the first time since the 1930s.

Thirty miles to the west is Nicomedia, where Diocletian launched the Great Persecution two decades before the First Ecumenical Council—burning Scriptures, tearing down churches, torturing, maiming, and sending Christians to the mines. The Romans who persecuted the faithful eventually became Christians. The Ottomans who came a thousand years later converted the churches to mosques. Today Nicomedia is called İzmit, and its Christian history is functionally invisible.

Further south, the city of Smyrna—where St. Polycarp was martyred in AD 155, where one of the Seven Churches of Revelation stood—is now İzmir, Turkey’s third-largest city. No functioning church marks the spot where Polycarp burned.

In the span of a single generation in the mid-14th century, the cities that helped shape the Christian faith were conquered and remade into the Ottoman image. And one of the greatest theologians in Orthodox Christian history watched it happen—from Mount Athos, from his church in Thessaloniki, and even from inside an Ottoman prison.

He is St. Gregory Palamas. What he saw and what he wrote, the Western Church largely never knew, and still doesn’t.

The Monk Who Became an Archbishop

St. Gregory was born in Constantinople in AD 1296 to a noble family with close ties to the imperial court. His father died young, and the Emperor Andronikos II personally supervised St. Gregory’s education. By any measure, he was on track for a career at the highest levels of Eastern Roman public life.

But then he walked away from all of it.

At 20, he left Constantinople for Mount Athos—the monastic peninsula in northern Greece that remains, to this day, the spiritual heart of Orthodox monasticism. He became a hesychast: a monk dedicated to stillness, prayer, and the direct experience of God through contemplative practice. He would spend 20 years there, interrupted only briefly when Ottoman raids forced the monks to evacuate.

Even if you’ve never heard of St. Gregory Palamas, you may have heard of the controversy that made him famous.

The Hesychast Controversy

In the 1330s, a Calabrian monk named Barlaam arrived in Constantinople and began attacking the hesychast monks of Mount Athos. Their claim that through prayer they could directly experience the uncreated light of God, the same light the disciples witnessed at the Transfiguration was, Barlaam argued, theologically incoherent. God is utterly transcendent, unknowable, beyond all experience. To claim otherwise was to fall into heresy.

St. Gregory answered him with one of the most consequential theological arguments in Christian history. God’s essence, St. Gregory Palamas wrote, is indeed beyond all human knowing. But God also genuinely acts in the world. He illumines, He sanctifies, He deifies. These acts are not creatures. They are God Himself reaching toward us: real, uncreated, divine energies through which human beings can genuinely participate in the divine nature. As Palamas writes in The Triads, III.ii.7:

“God is entirely present in each of the divine energies… although it is clear that He transcends all of them”

This is not a contradiction. It is the mystery of a God who is both utterly beyond us and genuinely present to us.

The Church agreed. At the Council of Constantinople in 1351, Palamite theology was confirmed as Orthodox doctrine, and Barlaam was condemned. And St. Gregory was eventually appointed Archbishop of Thessaloniki.

He was not a minor regional figure. He was one of the defining theologians of Eastern Christianity, a man the Orthodox Church would eventually glorify as a saint and commemorate on the second Sunday of Great Lent, ranking his feast alongside that of St. John Chrysostom and the other great fathers of the Church.

The World He Watched Disappear

To understand what St. Gregory witnessed in his lifetime, you need to understand how fast the Eastern Roman world was collapsing around him.

In the early 1300s, a minor Turkish warlord named Osman Bey controlled a small territory in the westernmost corner of Anatolia. But his ambitions were anything but modest. As he lay dying in 1323, his reported last words to his son Orhan were to:

“…propagate Islam by your arms.”

Orhan obliged.

Eastern Roman cities fell in rapid succession. Smyrna in 1329. Nicaea in 1331. Nicomedia in 1337. By 1340, the whole of northwestern Anatolia was under Ottoman control. An eyewitness described the Ottomans as:

“…separated from Constantinople by a channel of three or four miles.”

One by one the cities that helped shape the Christian faith were disappearing.

In 1354 came the moment that changed everything. Orhan’s son Suleiman crossed the Dardanelles and seized the abandoned fortress town of Gallipoli, establishing the first Ottoman foothold in Europe. An Ottoman chronicler recorded what followed without apology (Sword and Scimitar, Da Capo Press, 2018):

“Where there were churches he destroyed them or converted them to mosques. Where there were bells, Suleiman broke them up and cast them into fires. Thus, in place of bells there were now muezzins.”

Gallipoli became, as a later Ottoman commander boasted (Ibid):

“…the Muslim throat that gulps down every Christian nation, that chokes and destroys the Christians.”

The same year Suleiman crossed the Dardanelles and the bells of Gallipoli were cast into fire, St. Gregory was traveling by sea, likely headed to Constantinople on Church business. That’s when Ottoman forces intercepted and seized his vessel. The Archbishop of Thessaloniki was taken to Bursa, the Ottoman capital, a city that had itself been Christian until Orhan took it in 1326. He would remain a prisoner for approximately one year.

Inside the Sultan’s Prison

What St. Gregory encountered in captivity was not what a lesser man might have expected.

He was not thrown into a dungeon and ignored. The Ottomans recognized him as a significant figure: the Archbishop of Thessaloniki, a man of obvious learning and theological sophistication. He was brought before Orhan himself, engaged Muslim scholars in formal theological dialogue, and debated the son of the Sultan.

What he recorded afterward was not the testimony of a man who had glimpsed his enemies from a distance and drawn easy conclusions. It was the account of someone who had sat with them, argued with them, and listened to them. And he came away with a clear-eyed verdict on what drove them. In his Letter to the Church of Thessaloniki, Section VI.1, written from captivity, c. 1354–1355, St. Gregory writes:

“They live by the bow, the sword, and debauchery, revelling in acts of enslavement, murder, pillage, abduction, licentiousness, adultery and unnatural lust.”

That alone might sound like the words of a bitter captive. What follows is something different (Ibid):

“And not only do they do such things, but – what madness! – they think they are pleasing God by them. This is what I myself think about them, now that I have come to a more accurate knowledge of their ways.”

St. Gregory was not describing cruelty for cruelty’s sake. He was making a more precise and more unsettling observation: these were men entirely convinced that what they were doing was holy. The destruction of churches, the melting of bells, the enslavement of Christian populations—none of it registered as crime in their own understanding. It was worship.

This matters because St. Gregory was not a polemicist writing from safety. He was one of the most theologically rigorous minds of his generation, speaking from direct personal encounter. He was a man who engaged his captors in serious conversation and came away without illusions.

The Dialogues and the Ottoman Refusal to Pursue Truth

The theological exchanges St. Gregory conducted in captivity are remarkable documents. He was brought before a group of Muslim scholars—Chionai, as the sources call them, likely Jewish converts to Islam serving as intermediaries—and the conversation was real. He pressed them on Christ. They pressed him on the Trinity. He argued that reason itself points toward the divinity of the Word.

But the dialogues were not all he did. As his captors moved him through towns across Ottoman-controlled Asia Minor, St. Gregory encountered the Christian communities that had only recently been conquered. These were people now living under Islamic rule in cities that had been Christian for 1,000 years. He used every opportunity to encourage them. The Archbishop of Thessaloniki, prisoner of the Sultan, moving under Ottoman escort through the ruins of the Apostolic world, still functioning as a pastor to the remnant left behind.

At one point, debating with Ismail, the son of Orhan, St. Gregory proposed something his captors found startling: that both sides should agree to follow wherever reason and honest inquiry led, regardless of the outcome. His Muslim interlocutors declined. The Prophet’s word was sufficient, they told him. Further inquiry was not the point—a pattern that has proved remarkably durable across the centuries.

St. Gregory recorded this not with contempt, but with genuine sorrow. He’d hoped for a real conversation. What he found instead was a closed system—not closed out of stupidity, but out of settled conviction that the revelation was complete and the question already answered.

These dialogues survive as some of the earliest sustained Christian-Muslim theological exchanges we possess, written not by a crusader, but by a captive archbishop trying to bear witness to Christ from inside a prison.

In 1355, St. Gregory was ransomed and released, returned to Thessaloniki, and reposed in the year of our Lord 1357. He was 61 years old. He had spent his life defending the direct Christian experience of God, and watching, especially in his final years, the world that produced that theology disappear.

What Was Lost

Nicaea was gone. Nicomedia was gone. The churches of Smyrna were gone. The ancient Christian communities of Anatolia—the soil from which the early councils, the early martyrs, and the early theology of the Church had grown—absorbed into an empire that cast their bells into fire and replaced their liturgies with the call to prayer.

By the time St. Gregory Palamas reposed, Constantinople was effectively surrounded. It would fall 96 years later in 1453. Hagia Sophia—the Church of Holy Wisdom, the greatest church in Christendom for nearly 1,000 years—would become a mosque before the generation that had known St. Gregory had entirely passed away.

Many Western Christians have no category for St. Gregory’s story. They inherited their faith through Rome, through the Reformation, through the great Western tradition. They know the catacombs. They know the cathedrals of Western Europe. But Nicaea is a ruin many have never thought about, and have no idea what was lost when it fell.

They didn’t destroy it out of malice, nor because they were heretics. They did it because parchment was valuable, the book was old, and the material could be reused.

At some point, the manuscript was re-inked to preserve fading text. Later, when it was dismantled, some of its pages were reused as binding material in other volumes.

The manuscript was Codex—formally known as GA 015—one of the oldest surviving Greek copies of the Pauline Epistles in existence. And just like that, 42 of its pages vanished into history.

Until a few months ago…

What Is Codex H?

Before we get to the recovery, you need to understand what was lost, because this isn’t just any manuscript.

Codex H is a 6th-century Greek parchment codex containing the Letters of St. Paul. Written roughly 400-500 years after the saint was martyred, it’s one of the oldest and most significant textual witnesses to the Pauline corpus that we possess.

But what makes Codex H truly remarkable isn’t just the text of Paul’s letters. It’s what surrounds them.

Codex H is one of the earliest known manuscripts to contain the Euthalian Apparatus, which is a sophisticated paratextual framework built around the epistles. Think of it as an ancient study Bible system: chapter lists, prefaces, cross-references, historical notes, and reader aids designed to help early Christians navigate St. Paul’s writings.

Here’s why that matters. Modern Bibles divide Paul’s letters by chapter and verse—a system invented in the Middle Ages. But the Euthalian Apparatus shows us something older and stranger: how the early Church actually organized and read these same texts. The chapter divisions recovered from Codex H differ drastically from anything in your Bible today.

The manuscript did not merely preserve St. Paul’s words. It also preserved annotations, prayers, poems, corrections, and reader aids that show how early Christians encountered the text.

And they almost disappeared forever into a book binding.

The Scattered Pieces

After the Great Lavra monks dismantled the codex, the surviving fragments did what scattered things do: they drifted.

Over the following centuries, pieces of Codex H turned up in libraries across Europe. Today, fragments sit in collections in Italy, Greece, Russia, Ukraine, and France. No one institution holds more than scraps. The Brotherhood of the Megisti Lavra—the direct successors of the monks who dismantled it—holds eight folios. Eight. Out of what was once a complete manuscript.

For centuries, scholars knew Codex H mattered. They catalogued the surviving fragments. They compared them to other manuscripts. But 42 pages simply had no known physical location. They had been used as binding material, pressed between wooden covers, and forgotten.

The Ghost Text

This is where the story gets remarkable.

The physical pages of Codex H are still gone. They do not exist as standalone objects. What Professor Garrick Allen and his team at the University of Glasgow recovered were digital reconstructions of the text those pages contained—and the method by which they did it is genuinely extraordinary.

Here is the key observation the team made: at some point before the monks repurposed the manuscript, they had re-inked it. And re-inking leaves traces.

When freshly applied ink is pressed against an adjacent page, it transfers—not perfectly, but enough to leave a faint mirror image on the facing leaf. The chemistry of the new ink had caused what Allen’s team called “offset damage”: ghost impressions of text from pages that no longer physically exist, pressed into the surfaces of pages that do.

New Testament scholar Dr. Daniel Wallace, who followed the discovery closely, put it plainly:

“We don’t actually have 42 new pages. What we have is the residue of ink left over from those 42 pages that was pressed against the following page.”

Working with the Early Manuscripts Electronic Library, the team deployed multispectral imaging—photographing each surviving page under multiple wavelengths of light, from ultraviolet to infrared. Under those wavelengths, the ghost impressions came alive. As Allen described it, they were:

“…effectively retrieving multiple pages of information from every single physical page.”

Radiocarbon dating in Paris confirmed the 6th-century origin of the parchment. The full digital edition was announced on April 24, 2026, and is freely available at codexh.arts.gla.ac.uk.

The physical pages are still lost. But their words have returned.

What Did They Find?

The recovered pages don’t contain new letters from Paul. They do not overturn anything in the canon. They do not produce theological surprises. What they reveal is something arguably more interesting to anyone who cares about early Christianity: how the Church actually read Paul.

Here is what the recovered material shows us:

1. The earliest known chapter lists for Paul’s Letters. These pre-date our modern chapter divisions by centuries. And they’re organized completely different. The Early Church didn’t read Paul exactly the way we do. They divided and emphasized different sections, grouped themes differently, and navigated the text through a system we’ve largely lost.

2. Evidence of active readership. The manuscript preserves approximately 100 annotations and corrections from 6th-century scribes and readers—comparisons, corrections, notes in the margins. Real people wrestling with these same texts as moderns do.

3. The Euthalian Apparatus in its earliest surviving form. This organizational framework—one of the most important tools early Christians used to read the New Testament—is now better documented than at any previous point in modern scholarship.

Why This Matters to You

Here is the thing modern Christianity often forgets: the Bible did not arrive in your hands pre-organized.

The chapter-and-verse system familiar to every Protestant and Catholic was invented by Stephen Langton, Archbishop of Canterbury, around AD 1205—roughly the same time the Great Lavra monks were tearing apart Codex H. The verse numbering was added by a French printer named Robert Estienne in AD 1551.

The early Church read Paul without any of that scaffolding. They used systems like the Euthalian Apparatus instead; systems that are now only partially understood, and which Codex H helps illuminate.

When you hear someone say “the Bible has always looked like this,” Codex H is a useful corrective. It hasn’t. The words are ancient. The organization is medieval. And the distance between those two things is something Christians should reckon with honestly.

There is also something deeply moving about the monks of Mount Athos themselves—both the ones who dismantled the manuscript and the ones who, eight centuries later, granted modern researchers access to their eight surviving folios. The Great Lavra Monastery, founded in AD 963, still stands. The Brotherhood continues. They handed over the fragments of a book their predecessors destroyed so that scholars could try to bring it back.

That’s the Church in time: breaking things and preserving things and sometimes, by grace, recovering what was once lost.

Why This Matters for the Manuscript Tradition

Skeptics sometimes argue that the New Testament text has been corrupted over centuries of copying; that we can’t trust what we have. Discoveries like Codex H prove this thinking wrong.

Every time scholars recover an early manuscript or a lost portion of an early manuscript, what they consistently find is that the text of St. Paul’s Letters is remarkably stable. The recovered pages of Codex H contain known passages of St. Paul, not alternative versions or contradictory readings that overturn everything. The variation is in organization and annotation, not in the substance of what St. Paul wrote.

The Early Church was not hiding a different St. Paul. She was reading the same one you have in your Bible today.

A Living Tradition

St. Paul wrote to real communities in Corinth, Galatia, Rome, Ephesus, and elsewhere around the Roman Empire, and those letters were immediately recognized as authoritative. They were copied, annotated, organized, re-inked, torn apart, scattered across five countries, and eventually recovered by multispectral imaging in Glasgow, Scotland, in 2026.

And they still say the same thing they said in the 6th century. From the section Concerning Love, as a reader of Codex H would have encountered it (1 Cor. 13:4-13, NKJV):

Περὶ τῆς ἀγάπης (Concerning Love)

Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away... For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known. And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

This is how St. Paul’s words reached a 6th-century monk on Mount Athos. Not verse 4. Not chapter 13. Just: Concerning Love.

Eight hundred years in a book binding didn’t change a word.

It’s the Book of Enoch.

St. Jude Elevates Enoch

Open your Bible to the book of St. Jude. Near the end of this one-chapter Epistle something very interesting appears (Jude 14-15, NKJV):

“Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, ‘Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.’”

Note that St. Jude in his Epistle identifies Enoch—a man the Bible says never died—as “the seventh from Adam,” and presents his words as prophecy.

Those words come from a specific book: 1 Enoch, chapter 1, verse 9. It was a book that was common among early Christians, but then for most of Christian history, in the East and the West, it disappeared.

Who Was Enoch?

The Biblical record of Enoch is brief and somewhat mysterious. Genesis 5 gives us his genealogy and one of the most mysterious exits in all of Scripture (Genesis 5:24, NKJV):

“And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.”

No death and thus, no burial. He simply was not. The writer of Hebrews recalls this moment (Hebrews 11:5, NKJV):

“By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, ‘and was not found, because God had taken him’; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God.”

What Is the Book of Enoch, aka I Enoch?

The Book of Enoch is not a single unified composition. It is a collection of five distinct sections, likely compiled over several centuries, with the oldest portions dating to at least the 3rd century BC. Modern scholarship received dramatic confirmation of its antiquity when fragments of 1 Enoch written in Aramaic were discovered among the Dead Sea Scrolls at Qumran in 1947—preserved alongside texts that eventually entered the Hebrew canon. Whatever 1 Enoch was, it was not a late forgery. It was being copied and read by Jewish communities in the centuries immediately before Christ.

Its five major sections cover:

• The Book of the Watchers (chapters 1–36): The story of the angelic beings who fell, the account of Genesis 6 told in expanded form, and Enoch’s heavenly journey.

• The Book of the Similitudes (chapters 37–71): Enoch’s parables and visions of divine judgment.

• The Book of Astronomical Writings (chapters 72–82): Solar, lunar, and astronomical revelations given to Enoch.

• The Book of Dream Visions (chapters 83–90): Two dream visions, including a symbolic history of Israel.

• The Epistle of Enoch (chapters 91–108): Ethical instructions, woes against the wicked, and final exhortations.

What the Early Church Said About Enoch

The earliest Christian writers did not treat the Book of Enoch as a curiosity or even heretical. They engaged with it, some with enthusiasm, some with careful qualification, but none with the blank ignorance that characterizes most of modern Christianity today.

Tertullian of Carthage (c. AD 160–225). Tertullian was among the most prolific and influential Latin writers of the Early Church, and one of the first to develop Christian theological vocabulary in Latin. He explicitly defended the Book of Enoch, even while acknowledging that some Christians rejected it because it was not received in the Jewish canon. He argued that Enoch prophesied concerning Christ and that Christians should not reject what “pertains to us” simply because the Jews had rejected it. Tertullian says in On the Apparel of Women, Book 1, Chapter 3 (Ante-Nicene Fathers, Vol. 4):

“But since Enoch in the same Scripture has preached likewise concerning the Lord, nothing at all must be rejected by us which pertains to us; and we read that ‘every Scripture suitable for edification is divinely inspired.’ By the Jews it may now seem to have been rejected for that very reason, just like all the other portions nearly which tell of Christ. Nor, of course, is this fact wonderful, that they did not receive some Scriptures which spake of Him whom even in person, speaking in their presence, they were not to receive.”

St. Clement of Alexandria (c. AD 150–215). St. Clement, writing at the end of the 2nd century and beginning of the 3rd, also preserves Enochic tradition. In the Excerpts of Theodotus, a collection associated with the Alexandrian school, he refers directly to Enoch’s account of the fallen angels (Casey translation, 1934):

“And already Enoch had said, that the angels who transgressed taught men astronomy and divination, and the rest of the arts.”

That is the world of The Book of Enoch: the Watchers descend, transgress, and teach mankind forbidden arts.

St. Clement returns to the same tradition in the Stromata, noting that certain angels, “having sunk into pleasures,” revealed hidden knowledge to women. Whether one calls this Scripture in the later canonical sense or authoritative prophetic tradition, St. Clement’s use is matter-of-fact. Enoch was not treated as a fringe curiosity, but as part of the inherited explanatory world of early Christian theology.

Origen of Alexandria (c. AD 184–253). Origen, one of the most prolific scholars of the early Church period, also knew and engaged the Enochic tradition. But Origen is especially useful because he shows that the status of Enoch was already debated within the Church. He does not simply dismiss the book. Nor does he cite it without qualification. Instead, he adds a careful caveat. In his Commentary on John, while discussing Jared and the descent of the “sons of God,” Origen writes in Book 6 (Ante-Nicene Fathers, Vol. 9):

“For Jared was born to Maleleel, as it is written in the Book of Enoch—if any one cares to accept that book as sacred—in the days when the sons of God came down to the daughters of men.”

That parenthetical phrase is important: “if any one cares to accept that book as sacred.” Origen knew that Enoch’s authority was disputed. Yet the fact remains that he still cites it as a known textual witness to the story of the fallen angels. This is not the posture of a Church that had never heard of Enoch, nor of one that treated it merely as pagan fantasy. It is the posture of a careful scholar engaging a text that, while contested, still carried real interpretive weight in early Christian thought.

How the Book Was Preserved

While the Book of Enoch never made it into the canon of the universal Church, the Ethiopian Orthodox Church—one of the oldest Christian communities—never excluded 1 Enoch from its canon. The Ethiopian Bible contains 81 books. First Enoch is among them. It has been read, copied, chanted, and preached in Ethiopian circles for nearly two millennia without interruption.

This is an ancient church tracing its origins to the Apostolic era, with a liturgical tradition older than most of Western Christianity’s institutional memory. When the Apostle Philip encountered the Ethiopian eunuch on the road to Gaza he was meeting a representative of a civilization that would become one of the earliest Christian nations on earth (Acts 8:27, NKJV):

“…a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace the queen of the Ethiopians.”

That church kept 1 Enoch.

That fact does not settle the canonical question for anyone outside the Ethiopian tradition. But it does complicate any argument that the exclusion of 1 Enoch was obvious, universal, or inevitable.

Why It Disappeared for Most of Christianity

The disappearance of 1 Enoch from most of Christianity was not the result of a single council vote or a formal declaration of exclusion. It was a gradual process, driven by several converging pressures, and it unfolded over multiple centuries.

• Association with Gnosticism. By the second and third centuries, the elaborate angelology and esoteric knowledge-transmission narratives of 1 Enoch were being actively mined by Gnostic movements to support their own theological systems. Enoch is not a Gnostic text. But it was being used by Gnostics. In the fierce orthodox response to Gnosticism, texts circulating in those circles came under heightened suspicion.

• The skepticism of St. Jerome (c. AD 347–420), translator of the Latin Vulgate and the most influential Biblical scholar of late antiquity in the West, expressed doubts about Enoch’s authenticity. He did not formally condemn it. He also did not call a council to exclude it. He simply doubted it.

• The hardening of canon boundaries. The fourth and fifth centuries brought intense pressure to define Scripture with precision. In that environment, texts without clear apostolic authorship and without universal liturgical reception faced an increasingly high bar, a bar I Enoch could not clear.

Thus the book vanished almost entirely from European Christianity. By the medieval period, the complete text of 1 Enoch had effectively disappeared. Copies had stopped being made. The book that Jude quoted, that Tertullian defended, that Clement cited, that Origen named while adding his careful caveat…that book was gone.

The Man Who Brought Enoch Back

Then in 1768, a Scottish explorer named James Bruce of Kinnaird set out from London on one of the most ambitious journeys of the 18th century. His stated goal was to find the source of the Blue Nile. He was 37 years old, stood six feet four inches tall with red hair, spoke thirteen languages, and possessed the kind of self-confidence that borders on arrogance—a quality that would serve him in the Ethiopian highlands and destroy him in the London drawing rooms he returned to.

He had not arrived in Ethiopia unprepared. Years earlier, while studying ancient manuscripts at the Escurial library in Spain, he had taught himself Arabic and Ge’ez, the ancient liturgical language of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. That decision would prove providential.

He reached Ethiopia and found the source of the Blue Nile at Lake Tana. And somewhere in the ancient city of Gondar, between 1770 and 1771, he acquired something that would prove more significant to Christian history than any geographical discovery: complete manuscripts of 1 Enoch, preserved in Ge’ez. He returned to Europe in 1773 carrying four copies.

On his way home he stopped in Rome and secured an audience with Pope Clement XIV. At that meeting, Bruce explained to the Pope that he was carrying the book of Enoch, the very book quoted by Jude in the New Testament. The Pope questioned him at length about his travels, honored him with gifts of gold and silver medals, and received one of the Enoch manuscripts for the papal library. It eventually made its way to the Vatican Library where it remains today.

Bruce gave a second manuscript to the King of France. It went to the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris. Two more landed in Britain.

When Bruce published his account of the journey called Travels to Discover the Source of the Nile, in five volumes, in 1790, he was met with widespread disbelief. His descriptions of Ethiopia were so far outside European experience that critics accused him of fabricating the entire adventure. He was mocked and ridiculed in London society. He died in 1794 after falling down a staircase at his family home at Kinnaird, having never fully recovered his reputation.

Thankfully, he was vindicated posthumously. Later explorers confirmed his geographical discoveries. David Livingstone, the most celebrated explorer of the following century, reportedly said of Bruce:

“He was a greater traveller than any of us.”

That’s high praise coming from a man of Livingstone’s stature. And the manuscripts Bruce carried out of Gondar proved to be exactly what he said they were: the complete text of 1 Enoch.

In 1906, R.H. Charles produced the first full modern critical English edition. And just like that, for the first time in over a millennium, the text of the Book of Enoch was available to any reader who wanted it.

Why This Matters

This piece is not intended to argue that 1 Enoch should be in your Bible. That’s a question for another day and another conversation. This is simply about what the historical record shows us about the Book of Enoch and why it matters.

The New Testament quotes 1 Enoch by name and presents its words as prophecy. Early Christian writers—Tertullian, St. Clement, and Origen—read it, cited it, and engaged with it seriously. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church never stopped treating it as Scripture. And the complete text disappeared from most of Christianity not because a council condemned it, but because copies stopped being made, Gnostics exploited it, and St. Jerome doubted it.

It’s also important to note what the Book of Enoch reveals about how the Bible was compiled. Canon formation was messier, more contested, and more human than most Christians have been taught. The idea that the Biblical canon was always obvious, always self-evident, always universally agreed upon does not survive contact with the historical record. Enoch being quoted in Jude and then excluded from most canons is not an embarrassment to be explained away. It is a data point that invites honest reflection on how the Church received, evaluated, and sometimes lost parts of its own inheritance.

It deserves, at a minimum, to be read.

Then he found something.

The manuscript was an 11th century Greek codex, copied by a monk named Leon who signed and dated his work at the end: Tuesday, 11 June AD 1056 (Julian Calendar):

“Leon the scribe and sinner."

Inside it were several early Christian texts, including letters of St. Clement of Rome, letters of St. Ignatius of Antioch, and something else. Something Bryennios recognized by name but had never seen. Something that Eusebius of Caesarea had referenced in the 4th century. Something that St. Athanasius of Alexandria had mentioned in a list of books edifying for new Christians. Something that Church Fathers across the centuries had alluded to, cited from, and assumed existed, but that no one in living memory had actually read in full.

The complete text of the Didache. The Teaching of the Twelve Apostles.

Lost for roughly 1,500 years. Sitting in a monastery library in Constantinople.

How It Became Lost

The Didache was not destroyed. It was not burned by persecutors or buried by enemies. It simply fell out of circulation. As the Church grew and the canon of Scripture was formalized, shorter instructional texts like the Didache became less essential to copy and distribute. Copying manuscripts was expensive and labor-intensive. Each generation copied what it needed. In the West, the Didache stopped being copied almost entirely. In the East, it fared somewhat better—Leon's 11th century manuscript is proof that Eastern Roman monks still considered it worth preserving—but it had long since disappeared from active theological use. What the East kept was not the text. It was the practice the text described.

But it was not forgotten entirely.

The Church Fathers kept referencing it. Origen mentioned it. Eusebius catalogued it as a text known to the Early Church. Athanasius, writing his famous Easter letter of AD 367 in which he listed the books of the New Testament canon, included the Didache in a secondary list of texts useful for instructing new Christians—books that weren’t Scripture, but were worth reading. He knew it existed, but it’s unclear if he ever read it. The complete text was already effectively lost in his lifetime.

So for the next 1,500 years, Western scholars knew the Didache the way you might know a famous book you’ve never read—by reputation, by quotation, by the references others made to it. Some suspected it was a legend. Others assumed that what survived in fragments was all there was.

Then Bryennios found Leon the monk’s careful 11th century copy sitting in a library in Constantinople.

What It Is

The Didache, which is a Greek word that means “teaching”, opens with what it calls the Two Ways: the way of life and the way of death. This is moral instruction for new converts, drawn from the teaching of Christ and the Jewish wisdom tradition. It is direct and practical. It reads less like theology and more like a rule book handed to someone on their first day of being a Christian.

What follows is a document of remarkable range for its size.

Baptism. The Didache gives one of the oldest descriptions of Christian baptism outside the New Testament. Flowing water is preferred—cold, if possible—but the document is pragmatic: still water is acceptable, and pouring is permitted if immersion isn’t possible. Both the candidate and the baptizer are expected to fast beforehand. This flexibility, this willingness to accommodate real-world conditions without abandoning the substance of the practice, tells you something about how the Early Church actually operated. Note - the document may have been written as early as AD 50, which would mean most Christians were converts, so it doesn’t address infant baptism.

Prayer. The Didache quotes the Lord’s Prayer in full, in a form nearly identical to Matthew 6, including the doxology:

“For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.”

It instructs Christians to pray it three times daily. Morning, midday, and evening. This is the earliest non-biblical evidence we have for structured daily prayer built around the Lord’s Prayer, and it maps directly onto the Eastern Orthodox practice of the Hours that has continued unbroken to the present day.

Fasting. Chapter 8 instructs Christians to fast on Wednesdays and Fridays every week. The Wednesday fast commemorates the betrayal of Christ by Judas. The Friday fast commemorates the crucifixion. And not just during Lent. Every week, as an ordinary rhythm of Christian life; as normal as Sunday worship. The text frames it as a distinction from Jewish fasting, which was practiced on Mondays and Thursdays:

“Do not keep your fasts with the hypocrites, for they fast on Mondays and Thursdays. You, though, should fast on Wednesdays and Fridays.”

The Eucharist. The Didache contains some of the oldest Eucharistic prayers we have outside Scripture. They are spare and beautiful—Jewish table blessings adapted for Christian worship, feeling like a bridge between the Last Supper and the developed liturgies that would come later. Reading them alongside a modern Orthodox liturgy, the family resemblance is unmistakable.

Discerning false prophets. This section is unexpectedly practical and, frankly, entertaining. The Didache is concerned with traveling teachers and prophets who move between communities and need to be welcomed, but also evaluated. The tests it proposes are direct: any prophet who asks for money is a false prophet. Any prophet who orders a meal “in the Spirit” and then eats it himself is also a false prophet. Any prophet who stays more than two days is overstaying his welcome. The Early Church was generous, but not naive.

Church leadership. The document closes its practical section with instructions on electing bishops and deacons and a warning not to despise them in favor of the more glamorous traveling prophets. Local, stable leadership matters. The Didache knew this when the ink was barely dry on the New Testament.

The whole document takes 20 minutes to read. Its author is unknown. Its precise date is disputed—estimates range from AD 50 to AD 120, with a growing consensus toward the earlier end of that range for the reason specified. It likely predates some of the New Testament epistles. It describes a Church that is clearly Jewish in its roots, Greek in its language, and recognizably Christian in its theology and practice.

The Oversight That’s Like a Movie

Here is the detail that makes the story read like a Hollywood script.

When Metropolitan Bryennios found the codex in 1873, he recognized immediately that it contained significant material and began working through it. In 1875—two years after finding it—he published the letters of St. Clement contained within it. He had opened the codex, read it carefully enough to identify and publish multiple documents from it, and sent his work out to the scholarly world.

But he had not noticed the Didache.

The document that Eusebius had referenced, that Athanasius had listed, that Church Fathers across centuries had cited—was sitting in the same codex he had just partially published. He went back to the manuscript. He found it. He published it in 1883.

Ten years after he first held it in his hands. Two years after he had already published its companion texts.

When the first English translation reached New York bookstores on 20 March 1884, 5,000 copies sold in a single day.

Five thousand copies. In one day. Of a sixteen-chapter church manual written in the 1st century.

The Victorian scholarly world understood immediately what had been found: a document from within living memory of the Apostles, describing in plain practical terms how the earliest Christians organized their worship, their sacraments, their fasting, and their prayer. Not a theological treatise. Not a letter addressing a specific controversy. A manual. The kind of document you hand to someone starting a new church and say: here is how we do things.

The Codex That Kept It

The manuscript Bryennios found—the Codex Hierosolymitanus, now preserved in Jerusalem as Hierosolymitanus 54—is itself a remarkable object. Leon the monk finished copying it in June of AD 1056, at a moment of relative stability before the catastrophes of the next several hundred years. It was just two years after the Great Schism would formally divide East and West (but well before the effect was fully felt), it was before the Crusaders would sack Constantinople in 1204, and before the Ottomans would finally take the city in 1453.

Leon didn’t know he was preserving the only complete copy of one of the most important early Christian documents ever written. He was simply doing his job. Monks copied manuscripts. This was one of the manuscripts worth copying.

The Didache survived because an Orthodox monk thought it was worth his time, and because the library that held his copy survived the centuries intact. It survived in the East. It was found by an Orthodox bishop. It was published to a Western world that had forgotten it existed.

Where to Read It

The original codex is held today in Jerusalem at the Greek Patriarchate, catalogued as Hierosolymitanus 54. It has been there since 1887, four years after Bryennios published the Didache, when the manuscript was transferred from Constantinople to Jerusalem for safekeeping. Leon the monk’s 11th century handwriting is still legible…but I can’t find a picture of it.

A few weeks ago, the guide cited Jeremiah 25:30-31: God roaring from on high like someone treading grapes, bringing His indictment against all nations. Vivid, thunderous, the kind of divine judgement that gives you chills and helps you understand what Jonah wanted to happen at Nineveh. And why he was so disappointed when it didn’t.

My wife mentioned to me that she couldn’t find the passage in her Orthodox Study Bible, so I was intrigued and looked it up in mine.

Jeremiah 25 ends at verse 20. The verses simply weren't there.

Her study guide wasn’t wrong. And my Bible isn’t defective. Nobody misremembered anything. What that missing verse reference cracked open—over breakfast, something we had known, but hadn’t fully explored—is one of the most important and most overlooked fault lines in all of Scripture: the difference between the Masoretic Text and the Septuagint. And Jeremiah is ground zero.

Two Bibles, One Prophet

Your Bible—whether it’s an ESV, NIV, NASB, NKJV, KJV, or the one that’s been sitting in your nightstand since confirmation—is most likely translated from the Masoretic Text (MT). That’s the Hebrew Old Testament standardized by Jewish scholars called the Masoretes around the 9th and 10th centuries AD. It’s the default foundation for virtually every Protestant and Catholic Bible in print.

The Orthodox Church uses something different: the Septuagint (LXX), the ancient Greek translation of the Hebrew Scriptures made in Alexandria beginning around the 3rd century BC. This is the Bible the Apostles quoted. It’s the Bible St. Paul was working from when he drops Old Testament citations in his letters. Scholars have confirmed that the vast majority of New Testament quotations from the Old Testament follow the LXX, not the MT.

For most books of the Bible, the two are close enough that you’d barely notice the difference. Jeremiah is another matter entirely.

The Most Extreme Case in the Old Testament

The Septuagint version of Jeremiah is roughly one-eighth shorter than the version in your Bible. That’s approximately 2,700 fewer words. Entire passages you grew up reading simply don’t appear in it.

But it’s not just length. The chapters are in a completely different order.

In your Bible, the so-called Oracles Against the Nations—God’s judgments on Egypt, Babylon, Philistia, Moab, and others—appear at the very end of the book, chapters 46 through 51. In the Septuagint, those same oracles are placed in the middle of chapter 25, right after verse 20. Everything that follows gets reshuffled and renumbered.

That’s why Jeremiah 25:30-31 in most Catholic and Protestant Bibles becomes Jeremiah 32:17-18 in the Orthodox Bible. Same words. Completely different address.

But Isn’t the Hebrew Original the Real One?

That’s the natural assumption, and it’s worth taking seriously. The natural thought is that the MT is the original authoritative Hebrew text and the Septuagint is a Greek translation that drifted away at some point in history. The shorter, differently-ordered version must be the corrupted one. Right?

Here’s where the story gets genuinely surprising.

In the 1940s and 50s, scholars discovered the Dead Sea Scrolls in the caves at Qumran—including ancient Hebrew manuscripts of Jeremiah that predate the Masoretic standardization by roughly a thousand years. One of those manuscripts, known as 4QJer^b, follows the shorter, differently-ordered arrangement found in the Septuagint—not the longer version in your Bible.

The LXX translators weren’t paraphrasing. They weren’t taking liberties. They were faithfully translating a different, older Hebrew edition of Jeremiah that was already in circulation alongside the longer version. Both existed in Hebrew. Both were considered authoritative by the Jewish communities that preserved them.

The MT isn’t the “real” Jeremiah with the Septuagint as a flawed copy. They are two distinct ancient textual traditions, both with genuine manuscript support.

Why the Church Went With the Septuagint

This wasn’t a random choice. The Septuagint was already the dominant Scripture of the Greek-speaking world by the time the Apostles began preaching. It was the text the Early Church was born into, the foundation the Fathers built their theology on, and the Old Testament underlying the councils and creeds.

St. Augustine—not an obscure figure—defended it directly. In his words in The City of God, 18.43:

“The same Spirit who was in the prophets when they spoke these things was also in the seventy men when they translated them”

He wasn’t treating the Septuagint as a translation of Scripture. He was treating it as Scripture.

St. Jerome famously preferred the Hebrew texts, which is why his Latin Vulgate leaned toward what would later become the MT tradition. But even he acknowledged the Septuagint’s deep authority in the Church and its ancient roots. His position was a minority among the Fathers.

Why This Matters

If you’ve never heard any of this, you’re not alone. Most of modern Evangelical Christianity operates on the quiet assumption that the Masoretic Text is simply “the Old Testament”. Full stop. The conversation about which Hebrew tradition sits behind it, and why the Church the Apostles built used a different one, rarely comes up in Sunday school.

But it’s worth thinking about for a while. The next time you quote a verse and an Orthodox Christian can’t find it in his Bible, that’s not an error to explain away. It’s an opening to have a deeper discussion.

Behind that mismatched verse reference is an entire history of how Scripture was received, preserved, and passed down. It’s a history in which the oldest Hebrew manuscripts we’ve found actually support the tradition the Orthodox Church has been using all along.

Jeremiah 25:30-31 isn't missing from the Orthodox Bible. It's just got a different address. And the story of why is a very interesting chapter in Christian history.

Most people who grew up in church know the fish. It’s on bumper stickers. It’s stamped on business cards. It hangs on the back of minivans next to the soccer decals.

Many Christians know that the fish symbol is one of the oldest surviving markers of Christian identity in the world. It wasn’t chosen because early Christians liked fishing, although they probably did. It was chosen because the Greek word for fish contains a complete confession of faith. And of course Christ tells Simon (Peter), Andrew, James and John that they will become fishers of men (Matt. 4:19).

A Word That’s Also a Creed

The Greek word for fish is Ichthys (ΙΧΘΥΣ). Early Christians recognized that its five letters formed an acrostic: Iēsous Christos Theou Hyios Sōtēr—Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior.

It’s a compressed creedal statement touching on the name of Jesus, His identity as the anointed Messiah, His divine nature, and His saving work on the cross. In a single word, the ordinary word for fish, an early Christian could confess the entire center of the faith. Hidden in plain sight, in a word any Greek-speaking person in the Roman Empire would recognize.

Early Christian writer Tertullian, c. AD 200, offers one of the first explicit references to fish symbolism in a Christian context. In his treatise On Baptism (De Baptismo, 1), he writes:

“But we, little fishes, after the image of our ΙΧΘΥΣ, Jesus Christ, are born in the water, nor have we safety in any other way than by permanently abiding in water.”

By the time Tertullian writes this, the symbolism is already well established. He doesn’t explain the acrostic as if his readers are hearing it for the first time. He assumes they know it. St. Augustine, writing more than two centuries later in The City of God (18.23), spells out the acrostic in full—suggesting it had long since become standard catechetical material.

“This sibyl of Erythræ certainly wrote some things concerning Christ which are quite manifest... Flaccianus, a very famous man, who was also a proconsul, a man of most ready eloquence and much learning, when we were speaking about Christ, produced a Greek manuscript, saying that it was the prophecies of the Erythræan sibyl, in which he pointed out a certain passage which had the initial letters of the lines so arranged that these words could be read in them: Ἰησοῦς Χριστὸς Θεοῦ υἱὸς σωτήρ, which means, Jesus Christ the Son of God, the Saviour.”

And then, on the acrostic itself:

“If you join the initial letters of these five Greek words, Ἰησοῦς Χριστὸς Θεοῦ υἱὸς σωτήρ, which mean, Jesus Christ the Son of God, the Saviour, they will make the word ἰχθύς, that is, fish—in which word Christ is mystically understood.”

Where It Appears

The Ichthys is found in abundance across the Roman catacombs, which are among the richest surviving archives of early Christian visual culture. At the Catacomb of Callixtus and others, the fish appears on epitaphs and funerary inscriptions, frequently paired with an anchor or combined with a loaf of bread and a chalice. That pairing is not accidental.

A fish alongside bread—a pairing that appears repeatedly in the catacomb frescoes of Rome—immediately evoked the feeding of the five thousand, a miracle early Christians read as a prefigurement of the Eucharist. The symbol thus worked on multiple levels simultaneously: a confession of who Jesus is, an allusion to His miracles, and when paired with bread a visual shorthand for the sacramental life of the community.

The fish also appears on some of the earliest surviving Christian household objects—lamps, signet rings, and small bone carvings—suggesting it was not confined to funerary contexts or formal liturgical settings. St. Clement of Alexandria, writing around AD 200 in his Paedagogus (The Instructor, 3.11), even recommended that Christians use fish imagery on their personal seals and signet rings:

“And let our seals be either a dove, or a fish, or a ship scudding before the wind… and if there be one fishing, he will remember the apostle, and the children drawn out of the water.”

This is a practical pastoral recommendation, not a theoretical suggestion. Christians were already using the fish as a personal mark of identity, and St. Clement is encouraging and framing it theologically.

The Legend of the Two Arcs…that likely never happened

A story that circulates widely in sermons, devotional books, and popular Christian media holds that the Ichthys functioned as a covert recognition signal between believers under persecution: one Christian would draw a single arc in the dirt, and a stranger, if also a Christian, would complete the fish by drawing the second arc. A silent exchange. A mutual confession requiring no words and leaving no permanent trace.

It is a striking image. And it almost certainly never happened.

No early Christian writer mentions this practice. Not Tertullian. Not St. Clement. Not Origen. Not St. Ignatius. Not St. Justin Martyr. Given how extensively these writers documented Christian worship, practice, and even the minor details of daily life, their silence is significant. The specific choreography of the two-arc greeting has no traceable source in ancient Christianity.

Its earliest written form appears to be a Christianity Today article in which the editor presents it not as documented history, but as received tradition—a significant distinction that subsequent retellings quietly dropped. The legend’s emergence tracks precisely with the symbol’s modern revival, which itself has a dateable origin. In May 1973, members of the University of Queensland Evangelical Union used the Ichthys symbol at the Aquarius Rock Festival in Nimbin, Australia, as part of a Christian witnessing presence. The bumper sticker followed almost immediately. From Australia the symbol spread through evangelical student networks across Asia and then the world…and the demand for a dramatic origin story spread with it.

So a symbol that had faded from popular use after St. Constantine—its secretive function rendered obsolete by the legalization of Christianity—is revived by Australian university students in 1973, becomes a bumper sticker, and within a generation is being presented in sermons and devotionals as evidence of a clandestine Apostolic practice that no early Christian writer ever thought to mention. That’s not how ancient practices get passed down. It’s how folklore gets manufactured. (As an aside, you can guess what I think of Christianity Today…)

That doesn’t mean the fish carried no element of insider recognition. It almost certainly functioned, in certain contexts, as a mark more legible to believers than to outsiders. But there is a difference between a community using a symbol that those inside will recognize and those outside may not, and a formal covert greeting ritual of the kind the legend describes. The evidence supports the former, not the latter.

The legend tells us something real and not just about the ancient​​​​​​​​​​​s​​​​​.

Some are in marriages that feel like they’re falling apart. Some are already on the other side of divorce, trying to figure out what happened and why God would allow this to happen to them. We know from His Word and from Holy Tradition that God hates divorce—but nobody ever explained to these men why, or what the Church has actually believed about marriage for 2,000 years.

That’s what this piece is about. Not a lecture or a condemnation. Just the tradition, which turns out to be far richer and more healing than you may imagine.

Martin Luther Did Something That Seemed Small at the Time

In 1520, Luther published The Babylonian Captivity of the Church—a full-scale assault on the Catholic sacramental system. Among other things, he argued that marriage is not a sacrament. It is, in his words, “a worldly matter.”

That may sound like a theological footnote. It wasn’t. It was a demolition charge placed at the foundation of everything the Church had understood about marriage for 15 centuries before Luther.

When you demote marriage from a mystery—from something God does and cannot be fully understood by man—to a worldly arrangement between two people, you know what happens next: human arrangements can be dissolved. Courts and lawyers can manage it. The state becomes the arbiter of what God has joined together.

Every Protestant denomination that followed—Reformed, Baptist, Methodist, Evangelical—inherited this demotion. Some fought it harder than others. But the sacramental foundation was gone, and without it, the tradition ultimately couldn’t hold.

The divorce rate among American Evangelicals, for what it’s worth, is essentially indistinguishable from the general population. That’s not a coincidence. That’s the downstream consequence of a theological error made 500 years ago.

What the Early Church Called Marriage

The word the ancient Church used for marriage was mysterion—mystery. The same word they used for baptism and the Eucharist. St. Paul uses it in Ephesians 5:32, writing about the union of husband and wife: “This mystery is great — and I am speaking about Christ and the Church.”

The Fathers took St. Paul seriously. They understood marriage not as a legal contract, not as a social arrangement, but as an icon—a living image of the relationship between Christ and His Church. The husband images Christ. The wife images the Church. The union between them participates in a divine reality that existed before they did.

St. Augustine, writing in AD 401 in De bono conjugali (On the Good of Marriage), identified three irreducible goods in Christian marriage: fides (fidelity), proles (children), and sacramentum—the sacramental bond. He wrote:

“These all are goods, on account of which marriage is a good: offspring, fidelity, the sacrament.”

For St. Augustine, the sacramentum is the bond itself—not just the ceremony, but the permanent spiritual reality that the ceremony initiates. Something that cannot be undone by paperwork.

St. Ignatius of Antioch—who was an apostle of St. John—writing around 107 AD, already understood marriage as something that belongs to the Church, not to the state. In his Letter to Polycarp he says:

“It becomes both men and women who marry to form their union with the approval of the bishop, that their marriage may be according to God, and not after their own lust.”

Not after their own lust. According to God. The bishop involved. This is not a worldly matter.

An important translation note - the Greek mysterion becomes the Latin sacramentum in St. Jerome's Vulgate. St. Jerome didn't invent a new concept — he translated mysterion with the closest Latin equivalent that carried the same weight: a sacred, binding, outward sign of a hidden spiritual reality. When St. Augustine writes sacramentum in De bono coniugali, he's working in the same semantic world as St. Paul writing mysterion in Ephesians 5.

St. John Chrysostom on What You Owe Your Wife

St. John Chrysostom, Archbishop of Constantinople and one of the greatest preachers in all of Christian history, preached an entire sermon series on Ephesians. When he hit chapter 5, he didn’t soften it. Writing around 390 AD, he addressed Christian husbands directly (Homily 20 on Ephesians):

“Wouldest thou that thy wife should obey thee as the Church doth Christ? Have care for her then, as Christ also had care for the Church. Yea, even if it shall be needful for thee to give thy life for her, yea, and to be cut into pieces ten thousand times, yea, and to endure and undergo any suffering whatever — refuse it not.”

Cut into pieces 10,000 times. That’s classic Chrysostom. He’s not interested in niceness. He’s interested in the truth of what Christian marriage actually demands of a man.

But notice what he’s also doing: he’s not commanding your wife to submit to someone who hasn’t earned it by cruciform love. He’s admonishing you to lay down your life. That’s not the posture of a man looking for an exit. That’s the posture of a man on a cross.

St. John Chrysostom also described the Christian home as a little church—a domestic ekklesia, where husband and wife are not just companions, but fellow pilgrims on the road to God. Your marriage isn’t a side project of your spiritual life. It is your spiritual life. God works through husbands and wives to save each other.

The Crowns Are Also Crowns of Martyrdom

Here’s something almost no one in the Protestant world knows: in the Orthodox wedding service, the couple is crowned.

Not metaphorically. Literally. The priest places wreaths or crowns on the heads of the bride and groom and sings:

“O Lord our God, crown them with glory and honor.”

The crowns recall kings and queens, but they also recall martyrs. In the Early Church, martyrs were crowned. The word martyr means one who bears witness and by being crowned at the altar, the couple is making a witness. They are saying this is the way of the cross. We are taking it together, and we will follow it wherever it leads.

That reframes what suffering in marriage actually means. If your marriage is hard, and all marriages are hard eventually, the tradition doesn’t offer you a quick exit and a therapist. It offers you the theology of the cross. The suffering you endure in fidelity, in patience, in sacrificial love, is not meaningless. It is participation in the death of Christ, which leads eventually to paradise.

That’s not cruelty. That’s the deepest healing available. It gives the suffering a name and a direction.

What the Early Church Fathers Said About Divorce

The Fathers weren’t naive. They knew marriages could become catastrophic. They allowed for separation in cases of adultery or danger. But they were also very clear that the bond itself—the mystical union initiated by the sacrament—is not dissolved by human decision.

St. Basil the Great, in his canonical letters to Amphilochius (Letter 188, Letter 199, and Letter 217, c. 374 AD), worked through dozens of pastoral scenarios involving marriage, separation, and remarriage with remarkable care and specificity. He is not a rigorist throwing stones from a distance. He is a bishop doing the hard work of shepherding real people in real situations.

Note: these letters were formally received by the Council of Chalcedon as canons of the Church—so they carry conciliar authority, not just Basil's personal opinion.

But read those letters carefully and one thing is consistent throughout: the Church’s authority over the marriage bond is categorically different from the state’s. Civil separation is one thing. What God has joined is another question entirely—and it is the bishop’s question, not the magistrate’s.

This is not Luther’s “worldly matter.” This is a bishop in AD 374 treating marriage as something that belongs, fundamentally, to the life of the Church.

The Shepherd of Hermas, one of the earliest non-canonical Christian texts (c. AD 140), addressed adultery and divorce: a husband might put away an adulterous wife—but he was to remain unmarried, available for her repentance, not move on. Because the bond remained.

Yet the question of remarriage is more complex, and the Fathers debated it with real pastoral seriousness. St. Augustine’s position in the West is firm: the bond persists while both spouses live, and remarriage is not permitted. The Eastern tradition, including St. Basil, is more pastoral—permitting remarriage in limited circumstances as a concession to human weakness, not an endorsement of it. East and West never fully agreed on this question, and the honest scholar will tell you as much.

But here is what they did agree on: neither tradition ever arrived at anything resembling the easy remarriage culture of modern Evangelicalism. The Fathers—all of them—treated the dissolution of a marriage and the formation of a new one as a serious matter requiring serious discernment by the Church. Not a box to check with your pastor. Not a legal process to hand off to the state. A pastoral crisis, handled by bishops and priests, measured against the weight of what God had joined.

Why This Matters

I’m not writing this to beat men while they’re down. The men I’ve talked to are already in pain. They don’t need more shame. They need truth that is actually capable of healing them.

Here’s what I want them to hear: the modern church gave you a diminished vision of marriage, and that diminished vision is part of why you’re suffering the way you are. When marriage is just a contract between two people who love each other, it fails the moment the love feels insufficient. Contracts get broken.

But when marriage is a mystery—when it participates in the union of Christ and the Church—it has a weight that holds even when the feelings don’t. The suffering inside it can be redemptive rather than just destructive. The faithfulness you maintain in the dark is not stupidity. It is the life of the cross.

The Fathers knew something we’ve forgotten. Marriage is not primarily about your happiness. It is about your salvation—and your spouse’s. It is a path of theosis, of transformation into the likeness of God, walked with another broken human being.

That’s harder than anything the modern church ever promised you. And it’s also far more true.
