I keep getting asked if I ever get writer’s block.

Writer’s block?

I would kill for writer’s block right now.

My problem is the exact opposite. I feel like that enormous guy in Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life — Mr. Creosote — sitting at the table being fed one ridiculous course after another until somebody offers him one final wafer-thin mint.

That’s me with the news right now.

Every morning I open my phone and another insane story gets shoved down my throat. I want to get started right away but then I’d flood your inbox every day and I’m weighing out which stories should I spread out for you. It’s rolling downhill fast.

Wedding influencers.

Buy Now, Pay Later for the electric bill.

YouTube changing the rules once again. Ugh.

Hollywood making television for people who apparently can’t sit through television anymore.

People using spreadsheets to date.

And lately, I keep seeing people asking strangers on GoFundMe to help pay for their divorces.

Please.

No more.

Wafer-thin mint?

Fuck off. I’m full.

Unfortunately, I also can’t stop looking.

So here are a few stories currently bouncing around inside my head.

The Wedding Is Now a Small Business

We’ve already established that weddings have become financially insane.

The average wedding cost $34,200 last year, according to The Knot, and 31% of couples surveyed sought help from family, credit cards or loans. Wedding spending climbed another 8.5% during the first half of 2026.

But America being America, we found a solution.

Monetize the bride.

The Wall Street Journal reports that brides are increasingly turning their weddings into brand-collaboration opportunities. And you don’t necessarily need a million followers. One New Jersey bride started posting wedding-dress videos with around 2,000 TikTok followers, went viral and started landing sponsorships and freebies.

Invitations.

Wedding gowns.

Tuxedos.

Candles.

Bachelorette-party booze.

Bridesmaid swag.

Everything is content now.

Imagine explaining this to your grandparents.

“How did you pay for the wedding?”

“Well, Grandpa, Liquid I.V. covered the bridesmaid bags, Gap sponsored the engagement party and I had to post three Instagram Stories before the father-daughter dance.”

We have finally reached the logical conclusion of the creator economy:

Your wedding has deliverables.

Till death do us part.

Or until the brand contract expires.

We’re Putting the Electric Bill on Klarna

This one is much less funny.

Buy Now, Pay Later used to make some degree of sense to me when people were buying sneakers, electronics or some dumb thing they probably couldn’t afford.

Now people are reportedly turning to BNPL services to cover basic household expenses.

A recent LendingTree survey found that BNPL borrowers are increasingly using these services for necessities, with half saying they wouldn’t otherwise be able to make ends meet.

That’s not fintech innovation.

That’s a flare gun.

We’ve gone from:

Buy this $900 couch in four easy payments!

to:

Would you like to split your electricity into four easy payments?

Pretty soon you’re going to open the refrigerator and Klarna is going to ask whether you’d like to finance the milk.

Welcome to the Punch Yourself In The Face Economy, where you can pay your rent in installments while watching somebody you went to high school with post from Saint-Tropez for the seventh consecutive week.

I continue to have absolutely no idea how anybody has any money.

YouTube Moves the Goalposts

Meanwhile, creators aren’t exactly living in a stable economy either.

YouTube is changing how it counts views while imposing a tougher monetization hurdle for Shorts creators. Under the new setup, Shorts creators face a rolling threshold of 10 million views every 90 days to keep earning revenue. Fall below it, and they can remain in the Partner Program but won’t earn money during that period.

Ten million views.

Every 90 days.

Remember when your parents wanted you to become an accountant?

Maybe they had a point.

The creator economy has essentially recreated corporate America except your boss is an algorithm, HR doesn’t exist and one software update can cut your paycheck.

You don’t get fired anymore.

You simply wake up and discover that the machine has changed its mind about you.

Hollywood Has Discovered That Nobody Has an Attention Span

Then there’s this.

The Ankler reports that six streamers launched short-form feeds within six months, betting that bite-sized clips can lead audiences back toward full-length programming.

We have apparently entered the era of the microdrama.

Short episodes.

Vertical video.

Quick cliffhangers.

Stories designed for people whose attention span has been beaten into submission by TikTok.

Hollywood spent a century perfecting the motion picture.

Then television gave us the hour-long drama.

Then streaming gave us prestige television.

And now we’re working our way back toward:

Ross and Rachel have 90 seconds to decide whether they were on a break.

At this rate, by 2030 The Godfather will be seven TikToks and a sponsored post for DraftKings.

Dating Has Become Microsoft Excel

Dating, naturally, is also going extremely well.

Singles are apparently so burned out that some are using spreadsheets to evaluate their dates.

The Wall Street Journal calls it “love hacking”: people tracking values, behaviors, emotional reactions and compatibility to figure out why their romantic lives keep going off the rails.

Which might be the most 2026 thing I’ve ever heard.

Dating apps were supposed to make finding love easier.

Instead they made everyone so insane that we’re now opening Excel afterward to conduct an audit.

Romance used to be mysterious.

Now apparently it needs conditional formatting.

Nothing says butterflies in your stomach like a pivot table.

And Now We Have Divorce GoFundMes

And this is the one I keep noticing in the wild.

Divorce funds.

People crowdfunding their divorces. I’m seeing a ton of people in Miami on my social feeds asking friends and family to cough up some dough to fund their divorces.

To be clear, this isn’t entirely new, and divorce can be financially devastating. Crowdfunding for legal fees and the costs of rebuilding after a marriage has existed for years. There are real campaigns that have raised thousands toward divorce expenses.

But seeing these appeals alongside everything else happening right now feels perfectly on-brand.

We’ve somehow monetized the entire relationship lifecycle.

Dating: subscription apps.

Engagement: sponsored content.

Wedding: brand partnerships.

Marriage: couples content.

Divorce: GoFundMe.

We’re one startup away from offering Divorce Now, Pay Later.

And the saddest part?

Some VC reading this just opened PowerPoint.

Please Stop Sending Me Stories

This is why I don’t have writer’s block.

I have the opposite problem.

The Punch Yourself In The Face Economy is producing material faster than I can write about it.

Every time I think I’ve found the stupidest possible manifestation of modern American life, another one walks right smack through the door.

People can’t afford utilities, but weddings have sponsors.

People can’t find love, so they’re building spreadsheets.

Creators can get millions of views and still worry about qualifying for a paycheck.

Hollywood is chopping television into smartphone-sized pieces because we’ve apparently lost the ability to watch television.

And when the relationship finally collapses?

There’s a crowdfunding link in the bio.

I used to worry that eventually I’d run out of things to write about.

That fear is gone.

Now I’m Mr. Creosote staring at the waiter as another plate of 2026 insanity arrives at the table.

No.

Please.

I’m stuffed.

Not another bite.

And somewhere in the distance I can already hear the economy whispering:

“But sir... it’s only wafer-thin.”

I was at Penn Station the other day waiting to get on the train to get to New Jersey to see Guns N’ Roses at the Meadowlands (amazing show btw) and as I’m waiting in line I look over to the newsstand and I see that Alix Earle is on the cover of TIME magazine.

I remember when making the cover of TIME meant you were a world leader that had changed history.

Now apparently you need a ring light.

I’m not even hating on Alix Earle. Good for her. I’m mad at civilization for making me understand what a GRWM is.

The creator economy won. We can stop pretending there’s still a battle.

Bay Area renters are dealing with a new bit of landlord innovation: a $200 “work-from-home fee” added to a lease.

Excuse me?

We spent years being told remote work would save us money. No commute. No office. No expensive lunch.

Landlords saw that and said:

We’ll take it from here.

Pretty soon your lease is going to look like a Spirit Airlines checkout page.

People Are Speed Dating for Roommates

Also in the hellscape that we call the Bay Area, renters are now attending speed-roommating events to find someone to split housing costs with.

We’ve officially merged the dating crisis with the housing crisis.

Imagine speed dating except instead of asking, “What are you looking for in a partner?” it’s:

“What’s your credit score and do you leave dishes in the sink?”

Forget chemistry.

We’re looking for someone emotionally stable who can cover half of a $4,800 two-bedroom.

Romance is dead.

Zillow killed it.

You Can Major in Influencing Now

I know that I covered this recently but I just had to bring it up again that Arizona State University has launched a bachelor’s degree in content creation.

Yes.

An influencer degree.

Parents spent generations telling their children:

GO TO COLLEGE.

The kids finally listened and enrolled in what I call Algorithm State University.

I can already see the curriculum.

Freshman year: Ring Light Fundamentals.

Sophomore year: Advanced Thirst Trapping.

Junior year: Brand Deals & Apology Videos.

Senior thesis: Why My Engagement Is Down and How Society Failed Me.

And after four years, $100,000 and 37 credits in Personal Branding, you graduate just in time to discover the algorithm changed yesterday.

Welcome to the future.

That’s Enough Internet for One Week

That’s enough punches to the head for one week.

Before I go, I want to thank everyone for the kind words about my last Substack — the one where I tried to figure out how the economy can supposedly be in the crapper while everyone I know has apparently been on a three-month European vacation. I still don’t have an answer. Everyone is broke, nobody can afford a house, and somehow half of America is drinking an Aperol Spritz in Positano.

Maybe that’s the Punch Yourself in the Face Economy in a nutshell: nothing makes sense, everyone looks rich on Instagram, and the bill eventually shows up.

I have no idea what’s going on with this economy. I’ve given up trying to figure it out.

Here’s how I start every morning, and it’s not healthy. I wake up, grab my phone, and check TikTok and Instagram before my feet hit the floor. I’m not Rocky. I’m not cracking a dozen eggs and running through the streets at sunrise. I need reconnaissance. I need to know what’s going on out there.

Unfortunately, my Bloomberg terminal is Instagram.

And according to Instagram, America is somehow in the middle of a massive affordability crisis and having the best summer in the history of Western civilization. At the same time.

Everyone’s broke. Nobody can afford a house. Rent’s insane. Groceries are a joke. Credit card debt keeps climbing. Everybody knows somebody who just got laid off.

Then I swipe.

Ciao from Capri.

Wait. What? I thought we were in the shit.

Don’t Make a Fool Out of Me

There’s a scene in Casino I keep thinking about. Joe Pesci’s character is dealing with a degenerate gambler named Al. Al’s got a wife and kids, things are bad at home, so Nicky gives him money to get his life together. Al gambles it away. Then instead of just saying so, he makes up some story.

Nicky knows he’s lying. He finally snaps: I know what you did with the money. Stop making a fool out of me.

That’s how I feel looking at this economy. Don’t make a fool out of me. One minute everyone’s tapped out. Then I open Instagram and apparently half the people I know have been living in Europe since Memorial Day.

Did We Invade Europe?

Where is everybody? Rome. Capri. Positano. Lake Como. Mykonos. Ibiza. Saint-Tropez. Mallorca. Every morning I find out someone else has quietly relocated to Southern Europe.

These aren’t vacations anymore, they’re occupations. People left in June and never bought a return ticket. Three days in Rome, four in Capri, a boat to Positano, then Mykonos, then Ibiza, then somehow back in Italy again.

When are you people coming home? At some point you’re not traveling anymore, you just live there. People have been gone so long they’re reviewing grocery stores. “Guys, you have to check out this market outside Florence.” You didn’t find it. It’s your supermarket now.

Someone posts “another magical morning in Tuscany” and all I can think is: another? How many magical mornings have you had at this point? Go answer an email. Your plants are dead. Come home.

I Thought Americans Worked Too Much

That was supposed to be our thing. Europeans get six weeks off, Americans get four days of PTO and a company water bottle. Apparently that arrangement changed, because judging by Instagram everyone now gets 94 vacation days a year.

This is where it stops making sense. Five minutes before someone posts an Aperol Spritz overlooking the Mediterranean, I’m reading about how broke everyone is. Housing crisis. Student loans. Credit cards maxed. Paycheck to paycheck. Retirement is basically a myth now.

Then: buongiorno from Lake Como.

Don’t make a fool out of me. You just told me nobody has money. Why are you in Mykonos?

The American Dream Is Dead. See You in Greece.

Maybe this is just the new version of it. People tell you they’ll never afford a house, and I believe them. Then you ask about their summer plans. Three weeks in Greece.

Nobody can afford a down payment, but everybody can afford Santorini. We’re not building wealth, we’re building an impressive collection of beach club reservations.

Old American Dream: house, car, family, retirement. New one: rent, Uber, situationship, Mykonos.

And honestly, maybe that’s not even irrational. If you’re 30 and a decent house costs $1 million, maybe you just say screw it and go to Italy. If the future’s unaffordable, you spend on the present. Maybe Capri is the new 401(k). I don’t know anymore.

Then the Scroll Gets Dark

This is the part that really gets me. I’ll see a GoFundMe. Someone has cancer, their family needs $50,000 or $75,000, friends are chipping in ten or twenty bucks, people are sharing the link and asking strangers for help. It’s heartbreaking.

Then I swipe. Some girl I met in Miami years ago is on a yacht in Monaco. Champagne in hand. The guy who owns the boat looks like he remembers the invention of electricity. Nobody on that yacht is worried about inflation.

Both of those are sitting right next to each other in my feed. No warning. Cancer treatment: crowdfunded. Champagne on a 200-foot yacht: fully stocked.

Forget CPI. I want the GoFundMe-to-Yacht Ratio. That might tell us more about this country than anything coming out of Washington.

And Then There’s the Hamptons

Not everyone made it to Europe. Some people are suffering domestically. Every Friday, Manhattan empties out like someone called an airstrike. People who spent Monday complaining about grocery prices are holding $28 cocktails in Montauk by Saturday.

Some guy who owes three people money is at Surf Lodge. Someone who posted about the cost of living on Wednesday is standing next to an infinity pool on Saturday. Caption always reads: “much needed.”

Much needed what? Financial ruin? Apparently everyone’s one emergency away from bankruptcy and one group chat away from Montauk.

Maybe Everyone Is Fake Rich

Maybe that’s the real answer. Almost nobody’s actually rich, everybody just looks rich. Social media wrecked our ability to tell the difference.

Twenty years ago, a guy pulling up in a Lamborghini probably had money. Now I assume he had access to one for nine minutes just to film for a motivational video on IG. You see Capri, you don’t see the Chase statement. You see business class, you don’t see the points. You see the villa, you don’t see the group Venmo. You see the yacht, you definitely don’t see the old guy who owns it.

Instagram Stories are basically CNBC for fake rich people. Everybody broadcasts the prosperity, nobody broadcasts the minimum payment.

The trip was booked on points. The villa’s split eight ways. The flight’s on installments. The balance becomes September’s problem.

We’re all watching the highlight reel without seeing the financing behind it.

The Permanent Roman Holiday Economy

That’s what I’m calling it. Everybody feels financially unstable, but nobody wants to miss summer in Europe. Everybody thinks the economy’s a mess, but nobody wants to be the one person still home while everyone else is eating pasta in Positano.

So we go. We spend. We use the points. We split the Airbnb. We open another card. We tell ourselves we’ll figure it out later.

Maybe this is the first economy where looking financially successful became its own monthly expense. And I get it. Social media turned staying home and being responsible into a kind of public humiliation. You’re eating leftovers to save money while someone from your high school posts sunset photos from Ibiza. Eventually you think, fuck it, how much is a flight to Spain?

So, Are We in the Shit?

Still no idea. Maybe we’re fine. Maybe we’re cooked. Maybe both are true at once. That’s what makes this whole thing feel so strange.

One person’s raising $50,000 for medical treatment. Another’s choosing between beach clubs in Mykonos. One person got laid off Tuesday. Another hasn’t seen their apartment since June. And Instagram runs it all together with zero context. Layoff. Yacht. GoFundMe. Positano. Medical debt. Hamptons. Credit card debt. Mykonos. Housing crisis. Ciao from Lake Como.

By 7:30 in the morning I’ve watched the middle class collapse and seven people I vaguely know eat pasta on the Amalfi Coast. Haven’t even had coffee yet.

That’s when I think about Al in Casino again. Just tell me what happened to the money. Tell me we’re broke but spending anyway. Tell me the house felt impossible so you went to Greece instead. Tell me it’s points, tell me it’s debt, tell me fourteen people split the villa, tell me somebody else paid for the yacht.

Just stop telling me everybody’s broke while everybody I know is on a permanent Roman holiday.

Don’t make a fool out of me.

Maybe it’s a recession. Maybe it’s a boom. Maybe it’s something dumber than both: an economy where everybody’s broke, everybody’s spending, and nobody bought a return ticket.

So go ahead. Enjoy Europe. Drink the Spritz. Eat the pasta. Post the yacht. Have your Roman holiday.

But eventually September comes. And sitting quietly in your inbox back home is a credit card statement, waiting patiently.

It already knows what you did with the money.

But let’s be honest—the best horror movies happen during the summer.

Jaws.

Friday the 13th.

I Know What You Did Last Summer.

There’s something about warm weather that makes people ignore common sense (this explains Florida).

Most summer horror movies follow the same formula. A bunch of annoying young people make one terrible decision, and somehow the entire town ends up paying for it.

Sound familiar?

Because that’s basically what happened to summer in 2026.

The monster isn’t hiding in the woods.

It isn’t lurking beneath the water.

It isn’t wearing a hockey mask.

It’s carrying a ring light.

This summer, influencers became the ultimate slasher villain.

Not because they’re evil—but because every place they touch eventually stops feeling like a real place and starts feeling like a content set.

This week alone, two stories perfectly captured what the hell I’m talking about.

At the Jersey Shore, longtime neighborhood bars have become viral destinations after influencers and TikTok creators turned them into must-visit locations. Hours-long lines. Expensive VIP packages. People traveling hundreds of miles just to recreate a video they watched on their phones.

Then, up in Nantucket, a small craft shop made headlines by posting a simple sign:

NO INFLUENCERS.

Think about that.

We’ve reached the point where “No Influencers” has become the hottest marketing campaign of the summer. I remember a time when business owners dropped to their knees to have them visit their establishments.

For years, we’ve been told influencers help small businesses.

And many of them absolutely do.

But there’s another side to the story.

The algorithm doesn’t just discover places.

It consumes them.

Every hidden gem follows the same script.

A creator finds it.

A video goes viral.

Thousands of people show up chasing the exact same experience.

The lines get longer.

The prices go up.

The locals disappear.

Eventually someone hangs a “No Influencers” sign in the window.

It’s the social media equivalent of a horror movie body count.

One by one, the things that made a place special disappear.

We’ve turned authenticity into a subscription service.

People don’t just go on vacation anymore.

They produce vacation content.

The beach isn’t the destination.

The Instagram carousel is.

The bar isn’t where you meet people.

It’s where you film yourself pretending to have fun.

Restaurants now spend more time designing selfie corners than dining rooms.

Hotels advertise “Instagrammable moments” like they’re room amenities.

Beach clubs optimize for drone footage.

Even dive bars have become content factories.

Ironically, the most exclusive places in America today aren’t the ones with velvet ropes.

They’re the ones where nobody is filming.

A quiet neighborhood bar.

A bookstore where no one’s posing.

A beach where people are actually looking at the ocean instead of themselves.

Those places have become the real luxury.

The funniest part of the Nantucket story is that the “No Influencers” sign probably generated more publicity than any influencer campaign ever could.

Scarcity still sells.

Nothing attracts attention faster than refusing attention.

That’s the real horror story.

The algorithm creates demand.

Demand destroys the experience.

Then everyone wonders why the hidden gem doesn’t feel hidden anymore.

Summer didn’t die.

It was optimized.

And once the algorithm optimizes something...

The body count usually starts with the locals.

Fast forward to 2026...

Now they’re helping them fill out financial aid forms so they can major in it.

Arizona State University recently announced a bachelor’s degree in Content Creation.

Meanwhile, the University of Southern California is doubling down with REACH, a creator incubator where students build audiences, network with brands, and learn how to turn themselves into media businesses before they even graduate. Universities aren’t just teaching content anymore—they’re building creator pipelines.

I think they’re all missing a branding opportunity.

They should just rename themselves...

Algorithm State University.

It has a better ring to it.

Because let’s be honest...

This isn’t really about learning how to create content.

It’s about learning how to survive the algorithm.

Imagine getting accepted to Algorithm State University.

Freshman orientation starts with a lecture called:

“Nobody Owes You Reach.”

Organic Reach 101 is the hardest class on campus.

The football team?

The Fighting Thumbnails.

The school motto?

Post or Perish.

The dean doesn’t get fired.

He gets demonetized.

Academic probation is getting shadowbanned.

The bookstore doesn’t sell notebooks anymore.

It sells ring lights, wireless microphones, portable chargers, and oversized hoodies for filming “Day in My Life” videos.

The library has quietly been converted into a podcast studio.

Nobody noticed.

Your freshman seminar is called Personal Branding 101.

Sophomore year introduces Rage Bait Ethics.

Junior year is Advanced Thumbnail Psychology.

Senior year is just surviving the latest algorithm update.

The final exam isn’t a research paper.

It’s maintaining audience retention above 60%.

The valedictorian isn’t the smartest student.

It’s the kid who hit one million followers before graduation.

Career Day features MrBeast, Kai Cenat, and some sophomore making six figures reviewing Costco snacks.

Meanwhile, the accounting majors are nervously refreshing LinkedIn.

The funniest part is that people are going to laugh at these degrees.

They’ll say this isn’t “real education.”

But universities aren’t creating this economy.

They’re finally admitting what everyone else has been pretending not to notice.

The creator economy isn’t some weird side hustle anymore.

It’s an industry.

Brands spend billions on creators.

Hollywood is signing YouTubers.

Streaming platforms are buying creator-led shows.

Some of the biggest media companies in America now spend as much time chasing influencers as they do movie stars.

Every company now expects someone to:

• Shoot vertical video.

• Edit podcasts.

• Design thumbnails.

• Write newsletters.

• Analyze engagement.

• Explain why yesterday’s algorithm update tanked sales.

Whether your job title is marketer, PR executive, journalist, founder, or CEO...

Congratulations.

You’re in content now.

The irony is almost beautiful.

For years universities warned students to get off social media and focus on school.

Now social media is school.

Welcome to Algorithm State University.

The unofficial flagship campus of the Punch Yourself in the Face Economy.

Where your diploma gets framed...

...but your career is still determined by whether strangers decide to watch your video for eight more seconds.

For years, Andrew and Tristan Tate built an empire selling young men a fantasy.

Fast cars.

Private jets.

Luxury watches.

Absolute confidence.

And an endless stream of videos reminding everyone that they had supposedly figured out life while the rest of us were trapped in The Matrix.

Now they’re dealing with a different kind of matrix.

The legal system.

The Tate brothers were arrested in Miami over an extradition request from the United Kingdom, where prosecutors have brought dozens of charges against them, including allegations of rape, human trafficking and other offenses. The brothers deny all allegations. Their legal fight is expected to continue through the courts.

Of all the places for this latest chapter to unfold...

...of course it’s Miami.

Because if there’s one city perfectly suited for the grand finale of the internet’s alpha-male soap opera, it’s the Red Pill Riviera.

Miami has quietly become the unofficial capital of the manosphere.

It’s where crypto prophets, dating coaches, biohackers, motivational screamers, day traders, masculinity influencers, podcast philosophers, and guys selling $5,000 online courses all somehow end up sharing the same steakhouse.

Nobody asks what anybody actually does.

As long as your Instagram has enough Lamborghinis.

The city has become one giant networking event for people whose LinkedIn job title simply reads:

Founder. Investor. Visionary.

Translation:

“Still figuring it out.”

For the better part of five years, Miami has attracted every flavor of internet celebrity looking for lower taxes, fewer rules, better weather, and an audience willing to believe almost anything if it’s delivered confidently enough.

This isn’t a criticism.

It’s simply local culture.

Half the conversations here begin with:

“Bro... hear me out.”

Those are the four most expensive words in South Florida.

The Tate brothers fit this ecosystem almost too perfectly.

Their brand wasn’t really about masculinity.

It was about certainty.

Always be certain.

Never apologize.

Never doubt yourself.

Always have the answer.

Even if the answer changes every podcast.

The funny thing about certainty is that courts tend to ask for evidence instead.

That’s a tougher audience than a YouTube comment section.

Miami has always been America’s greatest reinvention machine.

People move here to become someone else.

The hedge fund guy becomes a content creator.

The content creator becomes a venture capitalist.

The venture capitalist starts a podcast.

The podcast host launches a tequila.

The tequila founder opens a wellness retreat.

The wellness retreat eventually starts accepting crypto.

Circle of life.

But eventually, every city famous for reinvention discovers an inconvenient truth.

Reality has a passport too.

And sometimes it lands at Miami International carrying extradition papers.

The Red Pill Riviera has always been full of larger-than-life characters.

Some become billionaires.

Some become legends.

Some become cautionary tales.

The internet has a habit of confusing the three.

One thing I’ve noticed over the past few years is how many young men confuse virality with credibility.

A guy rents a Bugatti...

films three podcasts...

posts motivational quotes over dramatic music...

and suddenly he’s Aristotle with a blue checkmark.

Social media has turned confidence into a substitute for competence.

The louder someone speaks, the more people assume they must know something.

That’s been one of the defining scams of the algorithm era.

The platform rewards conviction.

Reality rewards being right.

Those aren’t always the same thing.

Miami will survive this story.

It always does.

The yachts will keep floating.

The podcasts will keep recording.

The masterminds will keep masterminding.

The influencers will keep telling everyone they “manifested” success after raising money from family and friends.

And somewhere in Brickell, a guy wearing linen pants is probably pitching another revolutionary men’s self-improvement startup over espresso.

Business as usual.

Because in the Punch Yourself in the Face Economy, every week brings a new guru.

Eventually, some of them discover there’s one subscription nobody wants.

A legal defense fund.

That line has been stuck in my head lately.

Not because social media creators are fleeing with the lottery...

...but because they’re still looking for the winning ticket.

For the better part of a decade, TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook sold millions of people on the same dream:

Quit your job.

Become a creator.

Build your audience.

Monetize your passion.

Be your own boss.

People bought cameras, learned editing, obsessed over algorithms, and spent years creating free entertainment for platforms that are now worth hundreds of billions of dollars.

Some quit stable careers.

Some maxed out credit cards chasing the dream.

Others spent years posting every single day because they believed consistency would eventually pay off.

The lottery was supposed to be the Creator Economy.

Instead, more and more creators are finding out that hitting the jackpot doesn’t necessarily mean getting paid.

Payouts get delayed.

Monetization disappears overnight.

Revenue is frozen.

Appeals go unanswered.

Support tickets vanish into the digital abyss.

Entire businesses can be put on hold with nothing more than an automated email and a vague explanation that “your account is under review.”

Meanwhile, the platforms continue printing money from every scroll, every ad impression, every sponsored post, and every minute creators spend producing content that keeps users glued to their screens.

The content creators are doing the work.

The advertisers are paying the bills.

The platforms are collecting the money.

And somewhere in the middle, the people who actually built the audience are left refreshing their dashboards wondering when—or if—the payment will finally arrive.

Funny how the lottery always seems to pay the house first.

Congratulations to every guidance counselor in America.

Your job just got a whole lot weirder.

There was a time when the dream conversation went something like this:

“I got into Harvard!”

“I got into Stanford!”

“I got into MIT!”

Today?

“Bro... I got accepted to Streamer University.”

And unlike a lot of internet jokes, this one is very real.

Streamer and internet superstar Kai Cenat recently launched Streamer University, a creator boot camp where aspiring streamers, YouTubers, influencers, editors, producers, and content creators can learn directly from some of the biggest personalities on the internet.

The campus has professors.

Students.

Dorm-room vibes.

Guest lectures.

And enough cameras to make a Hollywood studio jealous.

If you’re over forty, this probably sounds like the opening scene of a dystopian movie.

If you’re under twenty-five?

It sounds like the opportunity of a lifetime.

The New Ivy League

Every generation has its dream school.

For Baby Boomers, it was the Ivy League.

For Millennials, it became elite tech schools and prestigious MBA programs.

For Generation Z and Generation Alpha?

The hottest university in America might not be found in a college ranking.

It might be found on Twitch.

Because today’s economy rewards attention almost as much as it rewards education.

Sometimes even more.

You can graduate from an elite university with six figures of student debt and spend months hunting for a job.

Or you can build an audience online and, if everything breaks your way, land sponsorships, advertising revenue, merchandise sales, subscriptions, licensing deals, and your own business before you’re old enough to rent a car.

That’s not fantasy anymore.

That’s a legitimate career path.

The Creator Economy Has Built Its Own Schools

What’s fascinating isn’t that Kai Cenat held a creator event.

It’s that he unintentionally highlighted something much bigger.

The creator economy has become so large that it’s beginning to build its own institutions.

Its own teachers.

Its own career ladder.

Its own version of higher education.

Now they’re attending something that looks suspiciously like freshman orientation.

The internet didn’t just create jobs.

This is exactly the sort of story that reminds me why I started writing about the Punch Yourself in the Face Economy in the first place.

We’re living through one of the strangest economic transitions in modern history.

The old formula looked like this:

School → Degree → Job → Retirement

The new formula often looks like this:

Ring Light → Content → Algorithm → Brand Deals

Neither path guarantees success.

Most creators won’t become millionaires.

Just as most college graduates won’t become CEOs.

But the fact that millions of young people now see content creation as a legitimate profession says everything about how dramatically work has changed.

Attention has become an asset.

Personality has become a business model.

And entertainment has become a career.

So... Is This Crazy?

Maybe.

Every older generation tends to roll its eyes at whatever the younger generation values.

Rock music.

Video games.

Social media.

Now streaming.

But here’s the uncomfortable truth:

Many of the biggest creators today are building businesses that rival traditional media companies.

They’re hiring employees.

Launching products.

Producing television-quality content.

Negotiating multi-million-dollar sponsorships.

Owning intellectual property.

In some cases, they’re becoming the media company.

That’s why Streamer University isn’t just another viral headline.

It’s a sign of where culture—and the economy—are heading.

The dream job for millions of young people is no longer working for a famous company.

It’s becoming the company.

And if that’s where the next generation wants to learn how to build a career, don’t be surprised if the hottest acceptance letter in America isn’t embossed with an Ivy League seal.

Mostly because today is July 1st, which means we’ve officially reached halftime in 2026.

And let’s be honest...

I don’t think Mike Tyson was talking about boxing anymore.

I think he might’ve accidentally predicted the 2020s.

Remember when everyone started this decade with plans?

Five-year plans.

Career plans.

Marriage plans.

Buying-a-house plans.

Retirement plans.

Then the universe cracked its knuckles.

COVID.

Lockdowns.

Stimulus checks.

Meme stocks.

NFTs.

Inflation.

Layoffs.

AI.

Creator millionaires.

Sports gambling everywhere.

Prediction markets.

Housing prices that require a GoFundMe.

And somehow social media found a way to become even weirder.

Every six months reality changes genres.

At this point, I’m not sure we’re living in an economy anymore.

We’re living inside a writers’ room where nobody is allowed to say, “Maybe that’s a little unrealistic.”

The Punch Keeps Coming

The funny thing about Tyson’s quote is that people interpret it the wrong way.

They think it’s about how planning doesn’t matter.

I don’t think that’s what he meant.

Planning absolutely matters.

You just have to expect the punch.

The problem is that most of us spent our twenties and thirties believing life followed a predictable script.

Go to school.

Get a good job.

Save money.

Buy a house.

Retire someday.

Instead...

Your degree became optional.

Your career got disrupted.

Your side hustle became your full-time job.

Your full-time job became your side hustle.

The richest person you know reviews Costco hot dogs on TikTok.

The second richest sells trading cards on Whatnot.

The third has an AI digital pet business that apparently pays better than your employer.

None of this was in the brochure.

Adaptability Is the New Superpower

The people doing well today aren’t necessarily the smartest (trust me).

They’re simply the ones who stopped expecting life to make sense.

They learn new skills.

They pivot.

They build audiences.

They diversify income.

They refuse to let one punch define them.

The plan isn’t to avoid chaos anymore.

The plan is to become the kind of person who can function inside it.

That’s a very different mindset.

Looking Ahead

As we head into the second half of 2026, I hope everyone keeps swinging.

Keep learning.

Keep adapting.

Keep laughing.

And maybe don’t spend six hours a day doomscrolling LinkedIn posts from people who claim they “predicted all of this.”

Nobody predicted this.

One of the more disturbing stories I read recently argued that gambling has become so normalized that middle-school students are discussing parlays, odds, and betting lines.

Not because of Bitcoin.

But because I’ve spent the last decade watching the crypto industry slowly work its way through every corner of society looking for fresh converts.

First it recruited libertarians.

Then venture capitalists.

Then Silicon Valley.

Then Wall Street.

Then celebrities.

Then athletes.

Then politicians.

Now...

It’s apparently making a stop at Sunday service. Mammon mania.

At this pace I’m expecting the next Bitcoin conference to be hosted at the Vatican with Michael Saylor giving the keynote.

If you’ve followed my work for any length of time, you already know my position.

I think Bitcoin itself is one of the most fascinating inventions of the last century.

The problem isn’t the technology.

The problem is that crypto has spent the better part of fifteen years becoming a magnet for every guru, grifter, motivational speaker, influencer, fake billionaire, and guy wearing a blazer over a V-neck who’s ever uttered the phrase...

“Bro... let me explain the future of finance.”

Crypto has produced legitimate innovation.

It has also produced enough scams to keep documentary filmmakers employed until the year 2050.

One thing I’ve learned covering the Punch Yourself in the Face Economy is that every revolutionary technology eventually develops two religions.

The first is built by engineers.

The second is built by marketers.

Guess which one buys the bigger billboard?

The internet has become incredibly efficient at turning hobbies into identities.

You don’t enjoy CrossFit.

You become CrossFit.

You don’t drive a Tesla.

You become Tesla bot.

You don’t own Bitcoin.

You become an unpaid missionary for Bitcoin.

The conversion is complete the moment you begin explaining the Federal Reserve to strangers waiting in line for coffee.

What fascinates me about this story isn’t whether Bitcoin is compatible with Christianity.

That’s a conversation for theologians.

What fascinates me is how every movement eventually starts borrowing credibility from institutions people already trust.

Throw in “ancient wisdom.”

If you’re selling business coaching...

Quote Marcus Aurelius.

If you’re selling AI...

Talk about saving humanity.

If you’re selling Bitcoin...

Apparently we’ve reached the Bible chapter of the marketing plan.

The crypto industry has always loved religious language.

Evangelists.

Believers.

Converts.

The faithful.

Heretics.

Maximalists.

The promised land.

The gospel according to Satoshi.

At this point all we’re missing is someone replacing communion wafers with hardware wallets.

Here’s what always sets off my internal alarm bells.

Whenever an investment stops being discussed like an investment...

...and starts being discussed like a moral obligation...

be careful.

Markets don’t care how righteous you are.

Bitcoin doesn’t know whether you’re a saint.

Ethereum doesn’t care if you attend church.

And your portfolio definitely doesn’t read Scripture before deciding to drop twenty percent on a random Tuesday afternoon.

Maybe I’m just old enough to remember every previous financial miracle.

The dot-com boom.

House flipping.

Subprime mortgages.

NFTs.

SPACs.

Metaverse real estate.

Every single one had people insisting this time was different.

Every single one attracted an army of motivational speakers who somehow always made money regardless of whether their audience did.

Funny how that works.

This isn’t really a story about Christianity.

It’s a story about trust.

Americans trust institutions less than they used to.

So new industries don’t simply compete on products anymore.

They compete for belief.

Belief is stickier than logic.

Communities are more valuable than customers.

Followers are better than investors.

So when I read about Crypto Christians, I didn’t think we’d reached some profound theological breakthrough.

And I don’t think enough people appreciate how significant that is.

What we’re witnessing right now looks a lot less like a few lucky indie hits and a lot more like a changing of the guard.

Over the past month, a former YouTuber and barista made one of the most profitable horror films in modern history.

A 20-year-old YouTube creator directed the biggest movie A24 has ever released.

A YouTuber turned filmmaker generated a theatrical hit by mobilizing his audience like a political movement.

And somewhere, a bunch of Hollywood executives are staring at spreadsheets wondering what the hell just happened.

Welcome to the new wave of Creator Cinema.

For years I’ve written about how the creator economy was changing everything.

Media.

Politics.

Sports.

Marketing.

Education.

Now it’s coming for Hollywood.

And honestly?

It’s about time.

Let’s start with Obsession.

When the movie first appeared, it sounded like one of those feel-good entertainment stories people share for a week before moving on.

Former YouTuber.

Former barista.

Tiny budget.

Indie horror movie.

Good for him.

Then the numbers kept growing.

And growing.

And growing.

Now the movie has reportedly generated more than 330 times its production budget and has become one of the most profitable films released in years.

Not one of the biggest.

One of the most profitable.

That’s an important distinction.

Because Hollywood loves talking about billion-dollar blockbusters.

Nobody talks enough about return on investment.

If you make a movie for less than the price of a celebrity’s annual security detail and it generates hundreds of millions in revenue, that’s not a hit.

That’s a business model.

Then there’s Markiplier.

For years Hollywood treated creators like annoying little cousins making videos in their bedrooms.

Now one of those creators self-financed Iron Lung and turned it into a legitimate theatrical success.

Not because a studio spent $100 million convincing people to care.

Because millions of fans already cared.

And then came Backrooms.

This is the story that really broke my brain.

A24 handed the keys to Kane Parsons, a creator who became famous making surreal horror videos on YouTube while most kids his age were trying to pass high school.

The result?

The biggest opening weekend in A24 history.

Not horror history.

A24 history.

Within weeks the film crossed more than $200 million worldwide and became the highest-grossing movie the studio has ever released.

Think about that for a second.

The studio that built its reputation on independent films, arthouse cinema, and prestige filmmaking now has a $200 million blockbuster directed by a kid who got his start making YouTube videos.

That’s not Hollywood discovering creators.

That’s creators inheriting Hollywood.

And if Hollywood executives needed an even bigger warning sign, the box office scoreboard delivered one.

For decades the industry operated under a simple assumption:

Big intellectual property wins.

Everything else fights for scraps.

Then suddenly a former YouTuber’s horror movie, a creator-driven indie film, and a surreal internet horror phenomenon directed by a 20-year-old YouTuber found themselves competing with — and in some cases outperforming — one of the most powerful entertainment brands in human history.

Star Wars.

The franchise that once represented the gold standard of blockbuster filmmaking suddenly found itself looking over its shoulder at movies that began as YouTube channels, internet communities, and creator passion projects.

That doesn’t mean Star Wars is dead.

It means audience behavior has changed.

People don’t automatically show up because a studio spent hundreds of millions of dollars and slapped a familiar logo on the poster.

They show up because they care.

And increasingly, creators are building that connection long before the movie ever reaches a theater.

For decades Hollywood believed intellectual property was the moat.

Now we’re learning something far more valuable may be community.

And here’s what I think most people are missing.

That’s how desperate independent filmmakers used to be.

He was trying to survive long enough to finish the movie.

The goal wasn’t distribution.

The goal was getting the thing made.

Now look at today’s creators.

Before Curry Barker ever stepped onto a professional film set, he already had an audience.

Before Kane Parsons got the keys to a major studio release, millions of people had already watched his work online.

Before Markiplier made Iron Lung, he had spent years building one of the largest communities on the internet.

The previous generation had to figure out how to finance the movie.

This generation often figures out how to finance themselves first.

They show up with an audience.

They show up with a brand.

They show up with distribution.

They show up with millions of fans.

In many cases, they’re already financially successful before Hollywood even notices they exist.

Robert Rodriguez had to sell his body to science.

These kids monetize YouTube.

Same dream.

Completely different game.

And honestly?

I think Rodriguez would appreciate the irony.

Because the lesson of Rebel Without a Crew wasn’t really about filmmaking.

What’s funny is that I should probably hate this.

I’m old enough to remember the previous version of the entertainment business.

All I ever wanted growing up was a career in show business.

Back then there was really only one path.

You had to know someone (or blow someone).

Or know someone who knew someone.

Or get lucky enough to stumble into the right room.

Maybe they’d help you get an assistant job.

Maybe.

Then you’d spend years fetching coffee, picking people up from airports, making photocopies, carrying dry cleaning, and hoping somebody important accidentally learned your name.

You endured endless verbal abuse from the most insufferable people drunk on power.

You got to meet everybody.

But nobody actually saw you.

You were “the help.”

The major bummer was that while you were busy serving the industry, you weren’t creating.

You weren’t honing your craft.

You were surviving the system.

This new generation didn’t have to do that.

They didn’t need permission from NYU.

They didn’t need permission from UCLA.

They didn’t need permission from Hollywood.

They got to fetch their own coffee and get to work on their own projects.

And while the old guard was protecting the gates, these kids were quietly building entirely new cities outside the walls.

That’s what excites me.

Not the money.

Not the headlines.

The possibility.

Some kid sitting in a bedroom right now with a laptop, an internet connection, and a weird idea has a better shot at building an audience than at any point in entertainment history.

Will most of them fail?

Of course.

That’s how every creative business works.

But for the first time, the path actually exists.

And judging by what’s happening at the box office, audiences are more than willing to follow them.

The next great American filmmaker might not come from Sundance.

They might not come from USC.

They might not come from Hollywood at all.

They might come from YouTube.

Or TikTok.

Or Twitch.

Or some kid in Miami editing horror videos at 2 a.m. while eating Raising Cane’s and ignoring their homework.

That’s the real story here.

The creator economy isn’t disrupting Hollywood anymore.

It’s becoming Hollywood.

The gatekeepers spent decades deciding who got a shot.

Now audiences are making that decision for themselves.

I’ve been trying to figure out why Scott Galloway feels so familiar.

Not because he’s a professor.

Not because he’s on every podcast.

Not because he’s become the unofficial therapist for every thirty-five-year-old guy with a six-figure salary, a Peloton, and mild existential dread.

Not because he’s mostly based in South Florida — the Red Pill Riviera — where the weather is warm, the taxes are low, and apparently the vibes are just right for repackaging internet radicalism as business casual thought leadership.

No.

It’s because Scott Galloway is a culture vulture.

And he’s very, very good at it.

A culture vulture doesn’t create the culture.

I debated writing about him because everyone and their mother was going to rush online today with their TED Talk-length hot takes about “legacy” and “disruption.” But Ted Turner is too important for me to ignore.

The man was responsible for so many things that I genuinely love.

He didn’t just build a media empire.

He stepped into the ring with one.

Long before streaming wars, algorithm battles, and billionaire cage-match fantasies, Turner understood something most executives today are terrified of:

Competition creates culture.

“You can’t beat anyone unless you get in the ring with them.”

That line defined his life.

Ted Turner didn’t believe in quietly coexisting with monopolies. He believed in challenging them head-on — loudly, publicly, and sometimes recklessly.

This is where people miss it.
