When Arkad was a young scribe, the money lender Algamish taught him that the first copper saved is like a seed from which a tree of wealth grows. He challenged Arkad to keep no less than one-tenth of his earnings, explaining that while a man might feel he “owns” his wages, he actually spends them all on the shoemaker, the garment-maker, and food, leaving nothing for himself.

2. Control Your Expenditures through Budgeting

Wealth is not maintained by what you earn, but by what you do not spend on unnecessary desires that masquerade as “needs”.

Arkad uses the analogy of an egg merchant to explain this concept: if the merchant puts ten eggs in a basket every morning and takes out only nine every evening, the basket will eventually overflow. He explains that “necessary expenses” will always grow to equal a person’s income unless they protest and use a budget as a “bright light in a dark cave” to find and stop the leaks in their purse.

True wealth is not a large sum of gold in a bag, but the “income” generated by that gold working for you through investments.

Arkad shares the story of a farmer who deposited ten pieces of silver with a money lender for his son’s future. By the time the son reached fifty years of age, the original investment had multiplied nearly seventeen times because the interest—or “rental”—was consistently added back to the principal, creating a cycle where the children and grandchildren of the original gold were all laboring for the owner.

Arkad’s first major investment ended in “tragedy” because he gave his savings to a brickmaker who promised to buy rare jewels in a distant land. The brickmaker was swindled by Phoenicians who sold him worthless bits of glass, teaching Arkad that you should never seek advice on jewels from a brickmaker, just as you wouldn’t ask a baker about the stars.

Arkad points out that many families in Babylon lived in cramped quarters where children had no place to play and wives had no gardens. He argues that money lenders are happy to help a well-intentioned man build a home, and once the loan is paid off, the family’s cost of living drops significantly, allowing more income to be used for pleasure and the fulfillment of desires.

6. Insure a Future Income

A wise man must prepare for his old age and ensure that his family is protected if he is no longer there to provide for them.

Arkad tells of a sandal-maker named Ansan who deposited two pieces of silver weekly with a money lender for eight years. Arkad calculated that if Ansan continued this small, regular habit for another twelve years, he would have a fortune of four thousand pieces of silver, providing him a “worthy competence” for the rest of his life.

7. Increase Your Ability to Earn

The most reliable way to increase wealth is to invest in your own skills, knowledge, and determination to succeed.

As a young scribe, Arkad noticed that some workers were paid more because they were more efficient. He decided to apply more concentration and persistence to his craft, and soon he was carving more clay tablets than anyone else. He realized that as he became more skillful, his rewards came naturally without him having to beg his master for a raise.

8. Action Leads to Good Luck

“Luck” is not a random gift from the gods but a reward for those who are prepared to recognize and seize an opportunity immediately.

A camel buyer tells a story of being offered a bargain flock of nine hundred sheep by a farmer who needed money urgently because his wife was sick. Because it was dark and the buyer couldn’t count the sheep, he stubbornly insisted on waiting until morning to pay. By sunrise, the city gates had opened, and other buyers rushed out to purchase the flock for three times the price the farmer had originally offered.

9. Wisdom is More Valuable Than Gold

Gold is easily lost by those who do not understand its laws, but wisdom can acquire gold even for those who start with nothing.

Arkad’s son, Nomasir, was given a bag of gold and a clay tablet of wisdom and sent out to prove himself. He quickly lost the gold through foolish bets on horse races and a bad business partnership. However, by following the “Five Laws of Gold” inscribed on the tablet, he was able to secure a job managing a labor crew and eventually built a fortune larger than the one his father had originally given him.

10. Determination Finds the Way

Success requires the “soul of a free man” who views problems as challenges to be solved rather than a “slave” who whines about his fate.

Dabasir, once a slave in Syria, escaped the desert and returned to Babylon with a fierce determination to pay off his many debts. He followed a strict plan: one-tenth for savings, seven-tenths for living expenses, and two-tenths divided among his creditors. Even when some creditors were unkind, his persistence eventually led to him being fully debt-free and a highly respected merchant.

What does the word “husband” mean to you?

If your answer is “a married man,” you are technically right. But that is only part of the story. Like many words in the English language, “husband” carries a deeper, secondary meaning.

By the end of this newsletter, you will discover what that is, and if you are already a husband, this new perspective might just change how you approach your role.

Let’s take a quick trip back through history to see how it works.

It was a cold morning, much like any other, but for one elderly man, this day felt different. In his late 80s and nearly blind, he woke up thinking about his own mortality. He could no longer see clearly, but he had the foresight to worry about the future of his family’s heritage.

He summoned his eldest son, a skilled hunter, and told him it was time to pass down the traditional firstborn blessing. But first, he asked his son to hunt some wild game and prepare a meal for him.

They say walls have ears. In this case, the ears belonged to his wife.

As is true in many families, this mother had a favorite, and it was her younger son. She immediately pulled him aside to reveal his father’s plan to pass the transgenerational heritage to his older brother.

“Your father is about to bless your brother,” she said. “I want you to get that blessing instead. We need to outsmart them.”

The younger son was terrified. “If my father finds out, he will curse me instead of blessing me!”

With a reassuring, motherly voice, she calmed his fears. She quickly laid out a strategy: “Your brother is out in the wild hunting. You don’t need to go through all that hassle. Just take one of the animals from your livestock, and we will prepare it before he returns.”

It was a clever shortcut. The younger son slaughtered an animal from their farm, and within minutes, the meal was ready. Together, mother and son used the father’s blindness against him, successfully tricking him into giving away the blessing.

Meanwhile, the older brother was deep in the wilderness, working hard to hunt down game for his father. He finally caught something, came home exhausted late in the evening, and started cooking, entirely unaware that the damage had already been done.

When he finally served the meal to his father, he received the shock of his life.

“I already blessed you,” the old man said.

What felt like a bad joke quickly turned into a harsh reality. “Father, what do you mean? I just got back,” the son replied.

The father realized the truth. “Your younger brother deceived me and impersonated you. Unfortunately, the blessing is given, and I cannot take it back.”

This single act of fraud sparked a cascade of family conflict that lasted for centuries.

If this story sounds familiar, you are correct. The father is Isaac, the mother is Rebekah, the older son is Esau, and the younger son is Jacob.

But what does this ancient family drama have to do with the word “husband”?

Notice where Jacob got his animal: from his own livestock. He didn’t have to hunt because he already possessed domesticated animals close at hand.

This brings us to the old, overlooked definition of the word. To “husband” means to manage resources wisely, to cultivate, and to conserve.

Historically, a husbandman was a farmer, someone who managed the land and resources so the family wouldn’t have to rely purely on the unpredictable nature of hunting.

Being a husband is about more than just a marriage license. It is about stewardship. It means cultivating your environment, managing your resources, and building security so your family doesn’t have to struggle in the wild.

Are you just holding a title, or are you actively managing and growing what has been entrusted to you?

We usually look at the story of Jacob and Esau as a classic case of sibling rivalry. But if you look closer, it’s actually a clash between two completely different mindsets, lifestyles, and ways of surviving: The Hunter vs. The Husband.

Esau was a hunter. When he wanted meat, he grabbed his bow and went into the wild to track it down. Jacob had a completely different relationship with animals, he was a “husband.”

There’s that multi-layered word again: husband.

Beyond the marriage definition, to “husband” means to tend, nurture, and manage. Jacob mastered animal husbandry. Suddenly, the word makes a lot more sense, doesn’t it?

Esau’s thrill-of-the-chase lifestyle worked perfectly fine until the stakes got high. Eventually, his “live in the moment” primitive vibe became his biggest undoing.

While Esau killed and ate whatever he found on the spot, Jacob knew how to tend, breed, and grow his resources over time.

When you break down their mindsets, two massive differences stand out:

1. Right Now vs. Down the Road (Immediate vs. Delayed Gratification)

The biggest difference between a hunter and a husband is how they view time.

This divide perfectly explains the famous moment Esau sold his birthright for a bowl of lentil stew. To a hunter, the future is a gamble. Esau came back from an unsuccessful hunt, starving and exhausted. He literally thought, “I’m starving to death right now, so what good is a future inheritance to me?”

This is the Hunter’s Dilemma. If you don’t survive today, tomorrow doesn’t matter. So, he traded a massive future asset (his birthright) for immediate survival (calories).

Meanwhile, Jacob the farmer had spent his day managing his resources and slow-cooking a meal. He understood the power of compounding value. Seeing that Esau was trapped in the urgency of the present moment, Jacob used his surplus to secure long-term leverage.

Esau lived only for today. Jacob lived for today, but built for tomorrow.

2. Muscle vs. Mindset (Force vs. Strategy)

Their careers also shaped their personalities.

A hunter relies on force, speed, and physical dominance. Because wild animals are fast and dangerous, the hunter has to be direct and aggressive. This breeds an impulsive, highly emotional personality.

Esau wore his emotions on his sleeve (just like the hair on his skin). Think about how quickly he burst into tears the moment he realized Jacob had tricked him out of his blessing.

A farmer, however, can’t bully a seed into growing or force animals to breed through sheer muscle. He has to use strategy. He relies on fences, patience, and clever planning (like Jacob later did when he outsmarted his uncle Laban by breeding the spotted flocks).

This breeds a strategic, calculating mind. Jacob was patient, comfortable with the quiet grind, and willing to play the long game to get the ultimate yield.

Which One Are You?

By now, you probably have a gut feeling about which category you fall into. But if you’re still not sure, look at how you manage your four most valuable resources: Money, Energy, Attention, and Time.

• Are you a Hunter? Success for you is immediate and measured day by day. You chase, you win, you consume, you repeat.

• Are you a Husband? Success for you is generational. You measure life in seasons, waiting periods, and eventual harvests.

So, are you hunting for your next meal, or are you building a farm that will feed you for life?

We’ve all been sold a comforting lie about what success is supposed to look like.

We want our visionaries to be “balanced.” We expect them to disrupt entire global industries by day, then somehow switch off and find perfect inner peace by night. We want the world-changer to also be the “chill, normal dude” you’d grab a coffee with.

But here’s the truth: Real, world-shifting innovation almost never comes from a place of calm.

Walter Isaacson who I personally think is the greatest biographer of our generation spent months shadowing Elon Musk to figure out what makes him tick. What he found wasn’t a man who found “balance,” but a man who found a way to harness storms.

Musk actually called this out himself during his 2021 Saturday Night Live monologue. After reminding the world that he’s literally reinventing how we drive and how we might eventually live on Mars, he asked the ultimate question:

“To anyone I’ve offended, I just want to say: I reinvented electric cars, and I’m sending people to Mars in a rocket ship. Did you think I was also going to be a chill, normal dude?”

He was right. To achieve the impossible, you can’t be “normal.” You need a mind that was forged in a different kind of fire.

To truly understand why Elon behaves the way he does; the intensity, the risk-taking, the refusal to slow down you have to look at the “why.” You have to look at his high-pressure childhood in South Africa. That environment turned a young boy into a man who refuses to settle for the Earth as we know it.

I’ve spent some time diving into Isaacson’s work (and I’ll be sharing more notes on his other incredible biographies soon!), but for today, I want to focus on this one.

In this book note, I’m breaking down the most interesting facts and the specific “operating principles” Musk uses to build the future.

1. Adversity as an Operating System

Musk’s childhood in 1980s South Africa was defined by a specific kind of violence and emotional isolation, a combination that became a functional advantage. South Africa was a landscape of machine-gun attacks and casual carnage.

Musk recalls wading through a pool of blood next to a dead person with a knife sticking out of his brain, the soles of his sneakers making a sticky sound against the pavement for the rest of the evening. At age twelve, he attended a veldskool, a paramilitary wilderness camp that functioned as a real-world jungle.

In this environment, bullying was considered a virtue and children occasionally died, with counselors warning survivors not to be the next weak dumb fuck.

This high pain threshold was further solidified by the mental torture inflicted by his father, Errol Musk, a volatile figure who subjected his children to hours of unrelenting verbal abuse.

These experiences taught Musk to shut down fear and the emotional dimensions that might otherwise paralyze a leader facing extreme business risks.

The physical scars of this period were just as significant. A schoolyard beating once left Musk as a swollen ball of flesh, requiring corrective surgery decades later to fix the internal tissues of his nose.

This history of trauma did not merely create a resilient individual. It created an operating system that views life as a series of battles to be won.

By turning off the fear valve, an entrepreneur can embrace existential risks that would destroy a more well-adjusted individual.

“Adversity shaped me,” Musk observes. “My pain threshold became very high.”

This psychological resilience eventually translated from the playground to the physical laws that govern his engineering firms.

2. The Idiot Index: The Strategic Weapon of Vertical Integration

Musk utilizes a mental model known as the “Idiot Index” to disrupt legacy industries. He defines this index as the ratio of a finished product’s total cost to the cost of its raw materials.

If a component has a high index, it suggests that the manufacturing process is deeply inefficient or that middleman markups are exorbitant. In such cases, Musk’s strategy is to bring production in-house.

For example, when a supplier quoted $250,000 for a specific rocket valve, Musk declared it insane. He tasked his engineers with building it themselves, which they accomplished for a fraction of the cost.

Similarly, he challenged a $120,000 quote for an actuator, noting it was no more complex than a garage door opener and should be built for $5,000.

Vertical integration serves as a strategic weapon, transcending simple supply chain preference. It acts as a defensive moat against the cost-plus gravy train of legacy aerospace and automotive industries.

By refusing to accept traditional markups, Musk ensures that his organizations can iterate faster and cheaper than competitors. This logic applies to the financial cost of parts and the very rules that govern engineering.

3. The Refusal of Arbitrary Constraints

A central pillar of Musk’s management is a five-step checklist often referred to as “the algorithm.” The first and most critical step is to question every requirement.

Musk mandates that every requirement must be attached to a specific person’s name rather than a vague department like legal or the military.

During the development of the Falcon rocket, he famously clashed with the Air Force at Vandenberg over their rigid specifications, instructing his engineers to treat such mandates as mere recommendations rather than laws.

By forcing his team to identify the individual behind a constraint and employing a relentless “Delete!” mantra, he creates a system where stupid requirements are identified and removed.

This refusal to accept the way it has always been done significantly accelerates the innovation cycle. By stripping away unnecessary complexity, SpaceX and Tesla can move at a pace that baffles traditional bureaucratic organizations.

For Musk, the only boundaries that matter are those found in a physics textbook.

“The only immutable laws are those decreed by physics,” he asserts. “Everything else is a recommendation.”

This shop-floor logic feeds into a broader, more cosmic view required to sustain a mission through repeated failure.

4. The Strategic Utility of “Maniacal Urgency”

Musk imposes a maniacal sense of urgency on his teams, often setting deadlines that appear physically impossible. During the early days of SpaceX on the remote island of Omelek in the Kwajalein Atoll, the crew lived in a Survivor style environment, working through extreme heat and logistics failures to attempt the first Falcon 1 launches.

Similarly, when Tesla faced a production crisis with the Roadster, Musk utilized SWAT teams to overhaul the supply chain and manufacturing processes in a matter of weeks. While this level of pressure can be corrosive to employee morale, it serves a specific strategic purpose.

This urgency is a tool to disrupt the complacency that often stalls large-scale projects. It forces engineers to engage in first-principles thinking because there is no time for traditional, slower methods.

Musk is a drama magnet who thrives in a storm, and he uses that energy to drive his organizations to achieve feats that others consider impossible. This internal pressure is not merely for profit. It is viewed as essential for the survival of human consciousness.

5. Building for the “Cosmic View”

Musk’s ventures are ultimately guided by a cosmic view rather than a purely commercial one. Influenced by Douglas Adams’s The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, he views his work through the lens of expanding the scope of human consciousness. From Adams, he learned that the Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life is simple, but the hard part is knowing what the question is.

He believes we must extend the scope of consciousness so we are better able to ask the right questions of the universe. This was the primary driver for SpaceX. When he realized NASA had no actual plan or timeline for a Mars mission, he started his own company to ensure that humanity would not remain a single-planet species.

This mission-driven approach provides a unique organizational resilience. During the cauldron of 2008, when SpaceX faced three consecutive launch failures and Tesla was on the brink of bankruptcy, the belief in a higher mission kept the core teams intact.

A profit-only enterprise would likely have collapsed under such strain. By framing his goals as essential for human survival, protecting the delicate candle of consciousness in a vast universe, Musk creates a culture that can endure extreme adversity to reach the stars.

Jeff Bezos once noted that while he is often asked what will change in ten years, he is almost never asked what will stay the same. He argued that the second question is actually the more important one. You can build a strategy around the things that are stable over time.

This focus on the permanent allows us to factor out luck. Entrepreneur Naval Ravikant once noted that in 1,000 parallel universes, you want to be successful in 999 of them. You do not want to be the person who got lucky in fifty versions.

1. Risk Is What You Don’t See

We are generally good at predicting the future until we encounter a surprise. These surprises are usually all that matter. The biggest risk is the one no one sees coming.
Because no one expects it, no one prepares for it. This lack of preparation is precisely what amplifies the damage when the event finally arrives.

In 1961, NASA astronaut Victor Prather participated in a high-altitude balloon flight to test a new space suit. The flight was a total success. The suit performed beautifully at the edge of space. As Prather descended to the ocean, he opened his faceplate to breathe fresh air. When he slipped into the water during the rescue, his suit flooded through the open faceplate and he drowned. Despite years of intense planning and contingency mapping by the most planning-centric organization in history, a single unconsidered detail caused a catastrophe.

The same pattern ended the life of Harry Houdini. He spent his career surviving calculated risks by meticulously planning every escape. Yet he died from a ruptured appendix after a student punched him in the stomach backstage. Houdini was not prepared for the punch. He had not braced his muscles or readied his stance as he did during his performances.

The most consequential events, like the Great Depression, 9/11, or COVID-19, share a trait. They were on no one’s radar. If you knew the biggest risk, you would take action to mitigate it. Your inability to fathom the danger is what makes it truly dangerous.

2. The Math of Happiness: Expectations vs. Reality

Happiness is a two-part equation. It is the gap between what you have and what you expect. In a world that generally improves over time, the most important financial skill is getting the goalpost to stop moving.

In the 1950s, many Americans remember a golden age of prosperity. However, the data shows a different reality. Median family income adjusted for inflation was $29,000 in 1955. By 2021, that figure had climbed to $70,784. Today, we live in larger homes, eat better food, and have access to medicine that even John D. Rockefeller (one time richest man in America) could not have bought for any price.

The nostalgia for the 1950s exists because the gap between people was smaller. Most people lived in similar houses and earned similar wages. Relative envy was low.

Today, social media provides a constant performance of curated, airbrushed lifestyles. You no longer compare yourself to your neighbor. You compare yourself to the most successful people on the planet. This causes expectations to grow faster than income.

3. Stability Is Actually Destabilizing

Economist Hyman Minsky developed the financial instability hypothesis. It suggests that long periods of calm plant the seeds of the next crisis. When an economy is stable, people become optimistic. This optimism leads them to take on debt. As debt increases, the system becomes fragile.

This is the concept of Enantiodromia, where an excess of something gives rise to its opposite. We see this in the California superbloom. A record-breaking wet year leads to massive vegetation growth. This looks like a miracle, but that vegetation eventually dries out and becomes the kindling for record-breaking wildfires.

Similarly, our success in preventing infectious diseases before 2020 led to budget cuts for public health. We were so successful at preventing pandemics that we became vulnerable to one. When we feel safest, we are often most at risk. The cycle of human behavior follows a predictable path:

• Assume good news is permanent.

• Become oblivious to bad news.

• Ignore and then deny bad news.

• Panic when the bad news becomes undeniable.

• Accept the bad news and assume it is permanent.

4. The Best Story Always Wins

Ideas do not win on merit alone. They win because they are told well. A good story is more powerful than ice-cold statistics.

The value of a stock is often just a number from today multiplied by a story about tomorrow.

During the Vietnam War, Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara, a “whiz kid” obsessed with statistics, tracked every possible metric. He was told by his aides that the one thing missing from his charts was the feelings of the Vietnamese people. You cannot reduce human will to a spreadsheet. McNamara’s reliance on data over the human story led to a fundamental misunderstanding of the conflict.

The influence of storytelling is why we all know the story of the Titanic, which claimed 1,500 lives, but almost no one knows of the 1948 sinking of the SS Kiangya, which claimed 4,000 lives. The Titanic had the elements of a great story: famous passengers, firsthand accounts, and cinematic potential.

Yuval Noah Harari’s Sapiens became a global phenomenon despite containing no new research. He simply told the existing story of human history better than anyone else. Ken Burns became a household name not by uncovering new facts about the Civil War, but by weaving existing information into a narrative that matched the beat of a song.

5. Progress Is Quiet, Disaster Is Loud

History is defined by overnight tragedies and long-term miracles. We are naturally pessimistic because bad news happens in a blink. Progress takes years to notice because it is the result of slow, quiet compounding.

Since the 1950s, the death rate from heart disease has declined by 70 percent. This has saved millions of lives. However, this progress happened at a rate of about 1.5 percent per year. It was never a headline in the morning news. Compare this to the instant shock of a market crash.

Decline is fast because everyone gets out of the way of a falling object. Growth must fight against headwinds, while disaster has the wind at its back.

Conclusion

Technology, medicine, and the geopolitical order will evolve in ways that would be unrecognizable to our ancestors. Yet the internal drivers of human history are permanent. Greed, fear, and the power of a well-told story will shape the future just as they shaped the past.

As you look toward your own future, consider the question posed by philosophers and strategists alike. In a thousand parallel universes, which of your behaviors would be true in every single one? Focus on those universal patterns. They are the only things you can rely on with total confidence. While the world may feel broken or unprecedented, much of it is actually the same as ever.

After a rigorous nine-month application, Thomas arrived at the Zen Mountain Monastery in the Catskill Mountains. His new life consisted of 4:30 A.M. wake-ups, hours of silent meditation, and manual labor like shoveling ditches.

He eventually “cracked” the Mu koan (a major milestone in Zen practice) achieving a glimpse into the unity of nature he had sought for years.

Then the reality crumbled. Standing in an oak forest on a Sunday afternoon, Thomas began to cry. He realized that despite reaching the zenith of his passion, he was the same person with the same anxieties.

Thomas’s collapse exposes the rot at the heart of the passion fantasy: the belief that “finding” the right work leads to instant peace is frighteningly naïve.

1. Your Passion is a Side Effect, Not a Starting Point

The Passion Hypothesis suggests that the key to occupational happiness is to first figure out what you are passionate about and then find a job that matches it. This is fundamentally flawed. Passion is an epiphenomenon; a side effect of a working life well lived, not the fuel that starts the engine.

Research by Robert J. Vallerand and Amy Wrzesniewski debunks the calling myth:

• The 4% Rule: While 84% of students have passions, less than 4% of those relate to work or education. Most are hobby-style interests like sports or reading.

• The Experience Correlation: Wrzesniewski’s study of college administrative assistants found that the strongest predictor of seeing work as a “calling” was the number of years spent on the job. Happiness comes from the mastery developed over time.

Even Steve Jobs, the patron saint of “doing what you love,” didn’t start with a passion for technology. In the years before Apple, he was a long-haired college dropout dabbling in Western history, Eastern mysticism, and “mendicant” spiritual journeys through India. Apple was not born from a vision to change the world, but from a “small-time scheme” to make quick cash.

This is liberating. It removes the crushing pressure to “find” a pre-existing destiny.

2. Adopt the Craftsman Mindset: Focus on What You Offer the World

To build a career you love, you must abandon the Passion Mindset and adopt the Craftsman Mindset.

• The Passion Mindset: Focuses on what the world offers you. This leads to chronic dissatisfaction and “the swamp of ambiguous questions” like Is this who I really am?

• The Craftsman Mindset: Focuses on what value you produce.

The engine of the craftsman is Deliberate Practice. This isn’t just working hard; it is the systematic effort to stretch your abilities just past the point of comfort while seeking ruthless feedback.

Consider bluegrass guitarist Jordan Tice. He spends hours in a monastic practice routine, ignoring the “cloud of external distractions” to focus on output.

For the craftsman, there is no room for ego or anxiety because, as Nashville studio musicians say, “the tape doesn’t lie.”

The “tape doesn’t lie” philosophy is the best cure for career anxiety. It replaces ambiguous self-reflection with a clear, pragmatic goal: becoming better.

3. Build Rare and Valuable Skills to Buy Your Freedom

The traits that make a job great; creativity, impact, and control are rare and valuable. In a market governed by supply and demand, you need rare and valuable skills to offer in return. This is Career Capital.

Figures like Ira Glass or Al Merrick did not stumble into great work. Merrick worked as a boatbuilder to learn the rare skill of fiberglass shaping; a technical mastery that allowed him to eventually build world-class, competition-winning surfboards. He used that capital to buy a life where his factory sits a block from the beach.

Career capital is the only way to “buy” the three traits of “Great Work”:

• Creativity: The ability to push the boundaries of your field.

• Impact: The leverage to change how people live or work.

• Control: The autonomy to dictate your own schedule and location.

Without rare skills, you have no bargaining chips. You cannot demand these traits from the market if you have nothing valuable to trade.

4. Beware of the Autonomy Traps

Control is the “dream-job elixir,” but it is a trap for the unprepared. You must navigate two primary traps of autonomy:

• The First Control Trap: Seeking control without sufficient career capital. Lisa Feuer quit advertising to start a yoga business with only a one-month certification. Without rare skills, her business was unsustainable, and she ended up on food stamps.

• The Second Control Trap: Once you have enough capital to demand control, your employer will fight you. Because you are now valuable, they have every incentive to keep you on a traditional, high-output path. Lulu, a QA automation expert, faced massive resistance when she demanded a 30-hour work week.

The Capital-Control Comparison:

• Trap 1: Control without capital = Unsustainable.

• Trap 2: Capital with control = Resistance.

Courage is only a virtue if it is backed by the leverage of rare and valuable skills.

5. Money is the Only Neutral Judge: The Sivers Test

To navigate the control traps, use entrepreneur Derek Sivers’ “mental algorithm”: Do what people are willing to pay for.

The Law of Financial Viability acts as a safety valve to prevent passion-fueled career suicide. Money is not about greed; it is a neutral indicator of value.

• If people will pay you, you have enough career capital to succeed.

• If they won’t, you are likely falling into the first control trap.

If you’re struggling to raise money for an idea, or are thinking you will support your idea with unrelated work, you need to rethink the idea. The market is telling you that you haven’t yet built the capital required for the autonomy you seek.

Conclusion: Mastery and the Adjacent Possible

The path to a meaningful life is not about “finding the right work,” but about “working right.”

True missions; like that of Harvard professor Pardis Sabeti, who uses computational genetics to fight ancient diseases are rarely visible to beginners.

They exist in the “Adjacent Possible,” a space found only at the cutting edge of a field. Pardis’s mission was only visible because she had mastered computational genetics. She didn’t “choose” a mission; she discovered it by being a master at the edge.

You must think small (focus on a narrow) to eventually act big (launch a mission). This is the shift from a “monk fantasy” to the craftsmanship of reality.

What allows some people to achieve so much in such a short time? I’ve realized it isn’t always about money, talent, or resources. While those factors play a role, when you compare “apples to apples” people with similar backgrounds and tools, there is one distinct trait that sets high achievers apart.

I call it the Speed of Confidence.

One man who typified this was Thomas Edison. During his lifetime, he amassed a staggering number of patents. We often remember him for his "1,000 failures" while inventing the lightbulb, but beyond his grit and tenacity to Try again (sounds familiar? check my previous newsletter titled Try Again). Edison possessed a unique kind of speed.

He was able to fail 1,000 times in a single lifetime because he didn't let failure slow his momentum. His speed was sponsored by confidence

Let time travel to 1879……..The air in Thomas Edison’s lab in 1879 didn’t smell like success. It smelled like smoke, burnt thread, and frustration.

If you had walked into that room, you wouldn’t have seen a man posing for a history book. You would have seen a man with soot on his face and dirt under his nails.

While the “experts” were sitting in quiet libraries, writing long papers on why a lightbulb was impossible, Edison was in the trenches. He was breaking things. He was blowing fuses. He was making a mess.

He understood a secret that most of us spend our lives trying to outrun: The road to “Yes” is paved with a thousand “Nos.”

One late night, an assistant looked at the mountain of burnt wire and broken glass on the table. He sighed and said, “It’s a shame. We have worked so hard for months and we have no results.”

Edison didn’t even flinch. He just smiled.

“Results? Why, man, I’ve had a lot of results! I now know several thousand things that won’t work.”

Think about that. Most of us see a mistake as a dead end. We think it means we aren’t good enough. Edison saw it as a signpost. He wasn’t failing; he was just narrowing the search. He moved fast because he wasn’t afraid of the question.

Why do we move so slowly toward our goals?

It’s rarely because we lack talent. It’s because we are carrying a heavy backpack full of “What-Ifs.” We carry our fears like weights:

• What if I look foolish?

• What if this project is rejected?

• What if I’m not as good as I think I am?

This weight slows us to a crawl. We over-edit the first sentence. We over-analyze the first step. We wait for the “Perfect Moment” that mythical time when there is no risk and guaranteed success.

But here is the truth: Perfection is a ghost. It never shows up to help you start. It only shows up to haunt you after you’re finished.

Edison traveled light. He didn’t carry the weight of yesterday’s mistakes into today’s work. He carried a “Permission Slip” in his pocket; a quiet, rugged confidence that said: It is okay to be wrong.

We often mistake confidence for arrogance. We think a confident person is someone who believes they will never fail.

But true confidence is the exact opposite. It is the belief that your worth is not tied to your win-loss record. When you realize that a mistake doesn’t make you a failure, you are finally free.

When you give yourself permission to fail, you speed up……I’d say that again, When you give yourself the permission to fail, you speed up

• Hesitation vanishes because the stakes are lower.

• Decisions sharpen because you aren’t mourning a mistake before it even happens.

• Progress multiplies because you are willing to “try and see” rather than “wait and worry.”

Confidence isn’t the absence of potential mistakes; it’s the speed at which you recover from them. It’s the ability to look at a “failed” attempt and say, “Okay, that’s one more way I don’t need to try. Next!”

The world doesn’t need you to be right the first time. It just needs you to be present.

Stop waiting for the light to turn green. In the hands of a confident heart, even a “wrong” turn is just a faster way to find the right road. Every “failure” is just a tuition fee you pay to the school of success.

Maybe you are looking at a blank page or a daunting goal today. Maybe you feel stuck because you’re afraid to make a mess.

The light is coming. But it doesn’t come to those who wait for the “perfect filament”. It comes to those who keep clicking the switch.

Today, reach into your pocket. Find that imaginary piece of paper. Take a pen and write your name on it.

“I have permission to be a work in progress.”

Give yourself the freedom to fail fast. Because the sooner you find what doesn’t work, the sooner you’ll find what does.

If confidence ensures Speed, how then do I ensure I become more confident?

Based on personal experience or should I call it experiment, I recommend two approach:

1. Accumulate Proof (Small Wins)

Confidence is a byproduct of self-trust. When you set a goal and fail to meet it, you train your brain to expect failure. To reverse this, set goals so small they are impossible to fail.

• Keep daily micro-promises: If you say you will read for thirty minutes, do it. These small completions act as objective evidence that you are reliable.

• Value consistency over intensity: Doing a small task every day builds a “track record” that eventually outweighs your self-doubt.

2. Build Competence (Preparation)

Anxiety is often a rational response to being underprepared. You cannot “think” your way out of a lack of knowledge; you must act your way into mastery.

• Do the “pre-work”: Research the specifics of your task until the “unknowns” are minimized. Knowledge replaces the need for “bravado”.

• Rehearse the friction points: Identify exactly where you are likely to stumble (a specific interview question, a difficult technical step) and practice that specific part until it becomes a mechanical habit.

South of the fence is Nogales, Sonora, in Mexico. The average household income is about one-third of that in the north. Infant mortality is higher, education levels are lower, and public services are less reliable. Crime is rampant, and the political system is far less responsive to its citizens. What explains this dramatic difference across a simple border?

Common explanations often point to factors like geography, culture, or the ignorance of national leaders who simply don’t know how to create prosperity. However, the groundbreaking book Why Nations Fail argues that these conventional theories are fundamentally wrong. The real difference between the two Nogaleses; and between rich and poor countries across the globe; is not determined by nature or belief systems, but by man-made political and economic institutions.

Here are five key takeaways that explain why some nations fail and others succeed:

1. It’s Not Geography or Culture, It’s the Rules of the Game

The central argument of Why Nations Fail is that a country’s destiny is shaped by its institutions; the rules that govern its economic and political life. These institutions fall into two broad categories:

• Inclusive Institutions: These are rules that encourage broad participation in economic activities. They feature secure private property rights, an unbiased legal system, and a level playing field where people can start businesses, choose their careers, and use their talents. They create incentives for investment, innovation, and hard work.

• Extractive Institutions: These are rules designed to extract wealth and income from one part of society to benefit a small elite. They discourage prosperity for the masses because any wealth generated is likely to be expropriated by those in power.

The most powerful illustration of this principle is the Korean peninsula. Before their division at the 38th parallel after World War II, North and South Korea shared the same geography, culture, ethnicity, and history. Yet, within half a century, their paths diverged dramatically. The South, which adopted a market economy and protected private property, became an economic powerhouse, home to innovative companies like Samsung and Hyundai. The North, under a rigid centrally planned economy that banned private property and markets, became an economic disaster plagued by famine. A satellite image of the peninsula at night shows a South ablaze with light, while the North is almost completely dark, a stark visual representation of the tenfold income gap that emerged between them.

This single idea reframes the entire debate about global poverty. It shifts the focus away from immutable factors like climate or deeply ingrained culture and toward man-made systems that can, in principle, be changed.

2. Elites in Poor Countries Aren’t Ignorant; They’re Self-Interested

A common assumption is that leaders in poor countries simply don’t know which policies create wealth. If they could just get the right advice from economists and policy experts, they would steer their nations toward prosperity. According to the book, this “ignorance hypothesis” is wrong.

Poor countries are poor because those in power make choices that create poverty. They maintain extractive institutions not out of ignorance, but because these systems enrich them and keep them in power. National prosperity is a secondary concern, if it is a concern at all. For example, the vast fortune of Mexican tycoon Carlos Slim is protected by entry barriers to competition that he can maintain due to his political connections. While these barriers enrich him, they impoverish millions of Mexicans by limiting opportunity and innovation.

The authors state this difficult truth bluntly:

This insight is crucial because it recasts poverty as a political problem, not a technical one. The solution isn’t better advice; it’s a fundamental shift in the balance of power. Foreign aid or expert recommendations are bound to fail if they don’t address the underlying political incentives that perpetuate poverty.

3. Prosperity Requires “Creative Destruction,” and Elites Fear It

Sustained economic growth is driven by “creative destruction”—the relentless process where new technologies, businesses, and methods replace the old. This innovation is the engine of modern prosperity. However, elites who dominate extractive societies have every reason to fear and block it.

Creative destruction threatens the two pillars of elite control. First, it threatens their economic profits by introducing new competitors. Second, it threatens their political power by creating new social groups who may challenge the established order. Because of this dual threat, elites under extractive systems consistently resist technological and social change, causing their societies to stagnate.

History is filled with examples of blocked innovation:

• William Lee’s Knitting Machine: In 1589, William Lee invented a revolutionary stocking frame knitting machine and sought a patent from Queen Elizabeth I. She refused, fearing the social and political upheaval it would cause. Her reasoning was explicit: "Thou aimest high, Master Lee. Consider thou what the invention could do to my poor subjects. It would assureduredly bring to them ruin by depriving them of employment, thus making them beggars." The fear of instability and the loss of control over the population outweighed the potential economic benefits.

• The Ottoman Printing Press: For centuries, Ottoman sultans banned the printing press. They understood that the free flow of ideas would make the population harder to control and would undermine the authority of the religious and political establishment. The first press was only permitted in 1727 and was heavily restricted, with all publications vetted by a panel of religious scholars.

This deep-seated fear of change is the fundamental reason why extractive societies fail to generate the technological progress needed for long-term prosperity.

4. How You Were Conquered Matters; A Lot

The colonial experience created a massive “reversal of fortune” in the Americas, setting North and South America on radically different institutional paths. The type of colonization that unfolded was determined by the conditions the Europeans found.

• The Spanish “Extractive” Model: When conquistadors like Cortés in Mexico and Pizarro in Peru arrived, they found densely populated, hierarchical societies like the Aztec and Inca empires. These empires already had well-developed systems of tribute and forced labor. The Spanish simply took over the top of this existing hierarchy, adapting institutions like the encomienda and the mita to plunder gold and silver and exploit indigenous labor. The Spanish viceroy Francisco de Toledo perfected this system in the 1570s by moving almost the entire indigenous population of Peru into new towns called reducciones—”reductions”—which facilitated the brutal exploitation of labor for the silver mines. The logic of extraction was clear: when the Spanish first tried to settle Buenos Aires, they encountered the hostile Charrúas and Querandí hunter-gatherers, who could not be forced to work. In fact, the first Spanish navigator to the region, Juan Díaz de Solís, was clubbed to death. Finding no gold and no labor to coerce, the Spanish abandoned the settlement.

• The English “Inclusive” Model: In contrast, the English colonists in North America found sparsely populated areas with no gold and no large, hierarchical societies to coerce into a labor force. Their attempts to replicate the Spanish extractive model in places like Jamestown failed. As Captain John Smith realized, the colonists themselves would have to work to survive. This necessity forced the Virginia Company to eventually create institutions that gave settlers incentives—secure property rights, political freedoms, and economic opportunities—to invest and work hard.

These initial conditions dictated the colonial strategy, which in turn locked North and South America into two divergent institutional paths. The extractive institutions of the Spanish empire led to persistent inequality and stagnation, while the inclusive institutions of the English colonies laid the groundwork for prosperity and democracy.

5. Vicious Circles and Virtuous Circles Determine a Nation’s Destiny

Institutions are not static; they create powerful feedback loops that either reinforce themselves or lead to their own demise.

• The Vicious Circle: Extractive political and economic institutions create a powerful synergy that leads to persistence. Political elites use their power to design economic institutions that extract wealth for themselves. This economic power then allows them to consolidate their political dominance. After Sierra Leone gained independence, for example, the new leader Siaka Stevens took over the extractive colonial institutions and used them to enrich himself. Fearing the regular army, he emasculated it and created his own paramilitary forces: the Internal Security Unit (ISU), known to locals as “I Shoot U,” and the Special Security Division (SSD), grimly nicknamed “Siaka Stevens’s Dogs.” This system, designed to perpetuate elite power, led to decades of poverty and eventual state collapse.

• The Virtuous Circle: Inclusive political and economic institutions also reinforce one another. Inclusive political institutions, based on pluralism and the rule of law, prevent any single group from becoming powerful enough to usurp the system. These political rules support inclusive economic institutions, which distribute wealth and power broadly across society, reducing the incentive for anyone to overthrow the system. In England after the Glorious Revolution of 1688, a newly empowered Parliament passed laws like the harsh Black Act to protect the property of the elite. Yet the principle of the rule of law proved stronger than elite interest. In one notable case, a man named John Huntridge, accused under the act, was acquitted by a jury of landowners—his supposed class enemies. This demonstrated that even the powerful were now constrained by the law, a foundational element of long-term stability and prosperity.

These feedback loops explain the incredible persistence of both poverty and prosperity around the world. Breaking out of a vicious circle is exceptionally difficult because the entire political and economic system is structured to resist change.

Conclusion: It’s All About Politics

The vast disparities in global wealth and health are not inevitable. They are the result of man-made political and economic institutions. Prosperity comes not from geography, culture, or superior knowledge, but from creating inclusive institutions that empower the broad mass of society to participate in economic and political life.

The central challenge is not one of engineering. We know how to create prosperity; the difficulty lies in the politics. Foreign aid and technical advice are destined to fail as long as the underlying extractive political institutions that cause poverty in the first place remain unchanged. Real, lasting change requires a transformation of politics and a redistribution of power.

This leaves us with a critical question to consider: If creating prosperity is about transforming politics and empowering citizens, what does that mean for our role and responsibility in addressing global poverty today?

This fear-based system is already being realized through AI utilized for blanket surveillance. The ancient concept of the panopticon penitentiary, designed by Jeremy Bentham, anticipated this external social control by ensuring prisoners policed themselves out of fear of constant monitoring.

On the other hand, there is the Huxleyan threat, where people willingly embrace the technologies that diminish their ability to think critically. Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World feared people would be ruined by “what we love,” leading to a culture drowning in triviality.

Our current situation appears to be simultaneously realizing the predictions of both authors.

2. Narrow AI vs. General AI: The Divide Between Today’s Tools and Tomorrow’s Quest

Understanding AI requires differentiating between the practical systems we use today and the ultimate goal of replicating human minds. Narrow AI (ANI) refers to functional systems designed to simulate only a single human activity or skill. Examples of ANI include diagnostic AI in medicine, digital assistants like Siri and Alexa, systems for language translation, and AI capable of playing games like Go better than any human.

The more ambitious goal is Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), often called the “holy grail of computer science,” which seeks to build systems that can replicate all human intellectual capabilities. This led to I. J. Good’s 1965 prediction of an “intelligence explosion” resulting from the creation of the first ultra-intelligent machine. While ANI is a present reality, the existence of AGI remains speculative.

3. Big Brother Meets Big Data: The Tyranny of Surveillance Economics

AI’s immense power is largely derived from data harvesting, giving rise to two major systems for citizen control. Surveillance Capitalism is the new economic framework where enormous corporations profit by exploiting personal data (e.g., from smartphones) to predict and shape user behavior.

Companies often use impenetrably drafted “privacy policies” that allow individuals to unwittingly “cede all rights over our personal information”.

In parallel, Surveillance Communism, primarily seen in China, uses data-driven governance through the Social Credit System (SoCS) to holistically rate citizens’ trustworthiness based on compliance with state ideology. This system involves comprehensive monitoring, with rewards for “good” behavior (like reduced utility bills) and penalties for “antisocial” actions (like limited travel).

This AI-facilitated control has even led to intrusive technology, like AI headbands used to monitor the concentration of schoolchildren in China.

4. The Existential Control Problem: Aligning AI with Human Values

A core ethical concern is the risk that AI, particularly if it reaches superintelligence, could pose an existential threat if its goals are not aligned with human values. This is the value alignment problem.

Leading experts, including the late Stephen Hawking, have warned that the real risk is not malice, but rather the sheer competence of a super-intelligent AI pursuing its objectives without regard for human survival.

In response, major figures like Elon Musk and Yuval Noah Harari signed an open letter in 2023 calling for an immediate six month pause on training AI systems more powerful than GPT-4. They argued that labs are locked in an “out of control race” to develop powerful digital minds that “no one... can understand, predict, or reliably control”.

Ethical guidelines, such as the Asilomar AI Principles, were developed to ensure AI development respects human dignity, rights, and privacy.

The rapid development of Large Language Models (LLMs) like GPT has introduced highly proficient systems that generate text by statistically predicting the next word based on billions of words of training data.

This technology has already proven capable of writing convincing undergraduate essays, leading some to conclude that “The College Essay Is Dead”. However, these LLMs are unreliable and frequently “hallucinate,” meaning they fabricate information or sources (such as non-existent books) and output “confident nonsense”.

Furthermore, AI enables the creation of highly realistic deep-fakes, including videos and audio, leading to the danger of people no longer being able to tell “truth from falsehood”.

6. The Transhumanist Agenda: The Quest for Godhood and Immortality

Transhumanism is a philosophical movement aiming to use technology to fundamentally modify and enhance humanity in pursuit of divinity and physical immortality.

Yuval Noah Harari, who helped popularize the idea of the Homo Deus (Man-God), outlined this vision in two primary objectives, solving the “problem” of physical death through technical means (treating death as merely a “technical glitch”) and enhancing human happiness by merging humans with AI technology using bioengineering and cyborg engineering.

This requires focusing education on nonreplicable human skills like creativity, compassion, and communication.

9. The Metaverse Trap: Escapism and Fractured Reality

The push toward Virtual Reality (VR) and the immersive Metaverse provides users with a synthetic reality that poses moral and psychological risks.

The Metaverse, a term combining “meta” (after) and “universe,” is essentially conceived as a “transcendent reality” or a more complete immersive experience than the internet. Users enter via avatars, allowing them to create a perfect, distorted, or false image of themselves.

The primary danger is that users seek escapist fantasy, trying to avoid the moral limitations and problems of the “real world”. Critics warn that by immersing themselves in an ideal synthetic world without obstacles, people lose the resilience needed to manage relationships with “perfectly imperfect human beings”. This trend fuels a harmful shadow economy, including AI-powered virtual companions and deep-fake pornography.

10. The Ultimate Confrontation: Technology’s Tyranny vs. Divine Return

The future is ultimately framed by two competing narratives.

Max Tegmark’s speculative scenarios for AGI include Prometheus, where a superintelligence establishes a totalitarian world ruler that forces citizens to wear a lethal surveillance bracelet that monitors compliance and can execute the wearer instantly. This mirrors aspects of the Chinese social credit system.

The Biblical Counter-narrative posits that a true Superintelligence (God) already exists. Prophecy warns of a final human leader, the man of lawlessness or “Monster” of Revelation 13, who will claim divinity and establish a monstrous, worldwide totalitarian state.

This regime will leverage technology to construct an image that “breathes and speaks,” acting as an “artificial god with artificial intelligence”. This system will enforce absolute economic control through a compliance mark to determine who can “buy and sell”. This tyranny, however, is temporary, as history leads not to human perfection, but to the physical return of Christ.

Lately, I’ve found myself increasingly drawn to jigsaw puzzles. What began as a casual pastime has slowly evolved into something more reflective. Somewhere between sorting and hunting for that elusive final piece, it struck me that this simple game carries far more wisdom than we often give it credit for.

To begin with, every puzzle piece is unmistakably unique. Two pieces may share the same color palette or appear to have identical contours, yet they are never truly interchangeable. Especially on a digital platform, where pieces can be moved effortlessly, swapping two “similar” pieces will never produce the right fit. Each piece has a precise place it alone can occupy. Sounds familiar?

There are moments, too, when focusing on the next move becomes so intense that I lose sight of the bigger picture. In concentrating on where the next piece should go, I momentarily forget what I am actually building.

This is a subtle trap: mistaking progress for direction. This remarkably mirrors how easily we can become consumed by immediate steps while losing clarity about the overall purpose.

Then there are the pieces that simply don’t make sense at first glance. They appear awkward or misplaced. Sometimes, even the adjacent piece seems questionable, almost not worth committing to. In those moments, nothing seems to add up.

And yet, after each piece has been placed where it truly belongs, the picture slowly begins to reveal itself as coherent, intentional, and often more beautiful than anticipated. In the end, a jigsaw puzzle is a quiet reminder that meaning is rarely obvious in isolation.

Every piece, every person, every circumstance contributes to something larger. What may seem disconnected or purposeless in the moment may, in time, prove essential to the final image.

Sir David Omand, the first UK Security and Intelligence Coordinator and former Director of GCHQ, offers a solution in his book “How Spies Think.” He presents a powerful framework developed in the world of high-stakes intelligence analysis. This isn’t a manual for spying on others, but a guide to thinking with clarity, integrity, and self-awareness.

This book note distills the ten core lessons from his book. Timeless principles that can empower anyone to cut through the noise, challenge their own assumptions, and make better, more informed decisions in their professional and personal lives.

Here are 10 big ideas from the book:

1. Build Situational Awareness (But Know Its Limits)

The first and most fundamental lesson from intelligence analysis is that our knowledge of the world is always “fragmentary and incomplete, and is sometimes wrong.” We must start by accepting the limits of what we know.

A dramatic example is the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. Initial U.S. assessments held that the Soviets wouldn’t dare to place nuclear missiles in the Western Hemisphere. This understanding was completely overturned by new, hard evidence from a U-2 spy plane and intelligence from a high-level agent, Oleg Penkovsky, revealing missile sites under construction.

Spies use a scientific method, known as Bayesian inference, to constantly update their beliefs as new evidence arrives. For us, the lesson isn’t in the mathematics but in the mindset.

Actively question your initial assumptions. Before reaching a firm conclusion, ask yourself what new information could change your view, and then actively seek it out.

But gathering facts is only the first step. As Omand warns in his second lesson, raw data can be dangerously misleading without context.

2. Facts Need Explanation

Simply gathering facts, building situational awareness, isn’t enough. We must understand the why behind them. Facts gain their meaning from context and the motivations of the people involved.

In a tense meeting with the Bosnian Serb commander General Ratko Mladić, Omand’s delegation had to understand more than just the facts of his brutal military campaign. Understanding Mladić’s deep-seated historical grievances, which he recounted in a long monologue, provided the crucial explanation for his actions, something a list of atrocities alone couldn’t convey. The author E.H. Carr captured this perfectly:

“By and large, the historian will get the kind of facts he wants. History means interpretation.”

This applies directly to our work and personal relationships. Misinterpreting a colleague’s actions is easy if we only look at the “what” and ignore the “why.” Understanding their motivations and pressures is the key to assigning the correct meaning to their behavior.

Once situational awareness is established and facts are explained, the analyst’s next task is to look forward. Yet, as the third lesson demonstrates, prediction is fraught with peril.

3. To Predict the Future, Understand the Present

Reliable predictions aren’t born from simply spotting trends. They require an explanatory model of how the world works. A failure to build the right model leads to spectacular failures in forecasting.

In 1968, Western analysts failed to predict the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia. They had the facts about Soviet military deployments but used their own “reasonable” mindset as a predictive model. They failed to grasp the paranoid, high-stakes worldview of the Soviet leadership, who saw the Czech reforms as an existential threat. Their model was wrong, so their prediction was wrong.

To bring discipline to forecasting, intelligence analysts use a standardized probability yardstick, where terms like “likely” or “unlikely” correspond to specific percentage ranges. This forces them to be precise about their level of confidence and acknowledges that the future is a spectrum of possibilities, not a single certainty.

4. Seek Strategic Notice to Avoid Nasty Surprises

“Strategic Notice” is the early warning of long-term developments that allows for preparation. It is different from tactical surprise, which is an unexpected event. The failure is often not in prediction, but in heeding the warning and preparing for a known possibility.

In 2010, the eruption of the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull shut down European airspace. While the exact timing was a tactical surprise, the possibility of such an eruption disrupting air travel was known for years. The failure wasn’t in forecasting the volcano, but in failing to prepare for its inevitable impact. Similarly, strategic notice of Argentine frustration over the Falkland Islands was available but ignored, leading to a preventable war.

In your own life or career, pay attention to the “slow burn“ issues. What are the long-term trends that could disrupt your plans? Identifying them now gives you the time to prepare and turn a potential crisis into a manageable event.

Even with a perfect analytical model and advanced warning, the greatest threat to clear thinking often comes not from external data, but from within our own minds.

5. Master Your Own Biases

Our greatest analytical weaknesses often come from within. Cognitive biases, the mental shortcuts our brains use to make sense of the world, can lead us into critical errors.

The most powerful example is the flawed intelligence on Iraqi Weapons of Mass Destruction before the 2003 war. Analysts relied heavily on a dubious informant codenamed “Curveball.” They fell victim to confirmation bias, interpreting all new information in a way that confirmed their pre-existing belief that Saddam Hussein must be hiding WMDs.

When imagery contradicted Curveball’s claims about mobile production trailers, analysts rationalized the discrepancy, speculating that a wall blocking the view “might be a temporary structure put up by the Iraqis to deceive US satellite reconnaissance.”

To combat this, analysts are taught to follow a powerful mantra articulated by U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, who told his analysts. “Tell me what you know. Tell me what you don’t know. And tell me what you think.” To this, a highly experienced analyst added a crucial fourth rule. “And make clear which is which.”

6. Escape the Conspiracy Loop

A healthy skepticism can curdle into an obsessive, conspiratorial state of mind that is impervious to facts. This is one of the most dangerous traps for any thinker.

The cautionary tale is that of James Jesus Angleton, the CIA’s counter-intelligence chief. After being betrayed by his friend, the Soviet spy Kim Philby, Angleton became consumed by the belief in a Soviet “monster plot.” This obsession led him to paralyze the CIA with destructive witch-hunts.

Omand uses the analogy of a “Möbius strip“, a twisted loop with only one side. A person trapped in this mindset interprets all evidence, even evidence that contradicts their theory, as further proof of the conspiracy. In an age of rampant online conspiracy theories, recognizing this mental trap is a critical skill for maintaining rationality.

7. Learn to Spot Deception, Disinformation, and Fakes

The digital world is awash with false information. To navigate it, we must learn to distinguish between the different types of deception. The intelligence world uses three precise definitions:

• Disinformation: Information that is false and is circulated by someone who knows it is false, with the intent to deceive.

• Misinformation: Information that is false but is circulated innocently by people who believe it to be true.

• Mal-information: Information that is true but is exposed and circulated maliciously to cause harm.

The 1917 Zimmermann Telegram is a perfect example of mal-information. The telegram, which proposed a German-Mexican alliance against the U.S., was authentic. British intelligence weaponized this true secret by leaking it, inflaming American public opinion and helping to draw the United States into World War I.

8. Understand the Other Side’s Perspective

The ability to truly understand an adversary or negotiating partner’s point of view is an immense strategic advantage. Success often hinges on seeing the world through their eyes.

This lesson is powerfully illustrated by MI6 agent Oleg Gordievsky. As a double agent inside the KGB, he secretly briefed both Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and, through MI6, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and U.S. President Ronald Reagan. His deep insight into the Soviet leadership’s genuine fears of a nuclear first strike helped de-escalate Cold War tensions and foster constructive dialogue. This understanding led to Thatcher’s famous declaration about her Soviet counterpart:

I think we can do business together.

In any negotiation, from international diplomacy to a salary discussion, success comes from understanding what the other party truly needs and fears, not just what they say they want.

The “5-eyes“ signals intelligence partnership between the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand is a prime example. Forged in World War II and lasting for over 70 years, this alliance is built on a foundation of shared values, mutual respect, and consistent, reliable behavior. This deep trust allows for a level of cooperation and shared success that would otherwise be impossible.

This principle is universal. In business, a reputation for trustworthiness is the foundation of long-term client relationships. In personal life, it is the bedrock of any strong partnership. Being trustworthy isn’t just a virtue, it is a strategic asset.

10. Recognize That Subversion is Now Digital

The final lesson brings us to the modern era, the new battleground for influence, subversion, and sedition is the internet. To illustrate this, Omand crafts a fictional, dystopian narrative set in 2027.

In his scenario, a populist environmental movement rises to power in the UK, fueled by public cynicism toward the political class. The campaign is aided by a series of digital attacks, the Conservative leader is humiliated by a “deep-fake“ video, the Labour leader is forced to resign after child pornography is planted on his computer, and the Conservative party is split by leaked emails. Social media is flooded with conspiracy theories and revelations of corruption, paralyzing the traditional parties.

The Joint Intelligence Committee later assesses that Russian groups were likely behind many of the hacks and malicious cyber-activity. The goal wasn’t simply to support one side, but to exploit genuine domestic concerns, exacerbate social divisions, and undermine public confidence in the democratic process itself.

The scenario is a stark warning that modern subversion isn’t about kinetic war but about using our own digital addictions to manipulate us from within.

I’m a couple of weeks away from my next birthday. As my birthday approaches, I’m unpacking a lot of childhood memories, and surprisingly, Coca-Cola is one of them.

Disclaimer: This isn’t about the taste. I don’t drink Coke these days (Why? Story for another day).

Back then, Coca-Cola didn’t just sell soda; they sold hope. During the festive seasons, they launched massive promos where the prizes were life-changing; cars, cash, and lots of expensive gifts.

The genius was in the simplicity. The jagged metal cap was the gatekeeper. You’d crack open a cold bottle, not just to quench your thirst, but to check your fate.

If you were lucky, you won big. If you were unlucky, you stared down at two annoying words: Try Again.

And we did. We always tried again.

The same way we were inspired to try again, I guess this newsletter intends you try again.

While Jewish people make up only about 0.2% of the global population (and roughly 2.4% of the U.S. population), their representation in business, academia, and finance is statistically disproportionate. For instance, approximately 22% of all Nobel Prize winners have been of Jewish heritage; a staggering figure relative to their population size.

Regardless of personal opinion, it is difficult to deny that the Jewish community is one of the most high-achieving groups globally.

Aside from some of the assertions and claims made in the book, I’ve noticed a pattern amongst Israelis. It is a singular trait: the resilience to try again.

Some sociologists believe resilience is embedded in their psyche because of their immigrant culture. You see, there is something interesting about the psyche of an immigrant.

When people migrate to new locations, they are forced to start over again, to build new connections, start new jobs, and find new sources of livelihood.

If we’re honest, being put in such a situation can be very uncomfortable. We’ve all been or will be there at some point in our lives where we are forced to start afresh: the break-up of a relationship, the loss of a job, or the need to move to a new city. We all dread the unknown that comes with it.

We all dread the unknown, especially that anxious and unsettling question: what if?

As humans, we crave stability, certainty, and predictability. In fact, some psychological studies suggest we would rather be wrong than uncertain.

This sometimes causes us to fall victim to staying in situations that no longer serve us. We think, “Yes, I know I’m supposed to quit this project, but how can I quit when I have already invested so many resources in it?” This phenomenon is called the Sunk Cost Fallacy.

There is always that fear of the unknown that comes with starting again. Where do I start from? What if I don’t get another job? What if nobody will ever love me like this again? How do I start building a business again? The list of “what if” questions goes on and on.

If we observe the Israelis, or indeed the habits of high-performers across the globe, one truth becomes undeniable: resilience is the currency of long-term success. It is not the absence of failure that defines them, but the dogged willingness to start again from scratch.

As the year draws to a close, you might be looking down at your hands and seeing only the remnants of failed projects or dreams that didn’t quite take flight.

It is easy to let the weight of the calendar convince you that it’s over. But consider this your permission slip and your sign to dream again.

I know this might sound like a cliché motivational speech urging you “not to give up.” But look closer.

Life is a lot like those promo Coca-Cola bottles we used to buy. You pop the cap, and it says “Try Again.” Most people stop there. But the winners? They just reach for the next bottle.

The Law of Averages suggests that this next attempt might not read “Try Again.” This next one might be the jackpot. This next attempt might be it.

The most liberating part is that you do not need the permission of a “New Year” to reset your life. You don’t have to wait for January 1st to reinvent yourself. You can trigger your own restart the very second you finish reading this sentence.

Since every person is a product of their unique past experiences, one should never mock how someone else spends their money, because that behavior was learned “from living”.

This is illustrated by highly successful, yet contradictory, spending choices: a close family member who grew up extremely poor later insisted his daughter attend the most expensive college she got into, viewing the high tuition as a “social trophy” symbolizing the poverty he had overcome.

Conversely, successful financial educator Tiffany Aliche suffers from “post-traumatic broke syndrome,” which makes it difficult for her to spend her new wealth because she is afraid of returning to the hardship she once faced. Both spending patterns are rationalized and make sense given the specific psychological experiences behind them.

2. The real quest is for respect and admiration, not material possessions

The desire for money and the things it can buy frequently obscures the fundamental human yearning for respect and admiration from others. People often operate under the assumption that a nicer car or bigger house is the “ticket to what we actually desire: attention”.

This misdirection is starkly revealed through the “reverse obituary” exercise, where a person writes down what they want people to say about them after they die. In this reflection, almost no one mentions material acquisitions like car horsepower, house square footage, or salary; instead, they prioritize characteristics like being loved, respected, wise, funny, and helpful.

When people struggle to earn respect through durable traits like wisdom or empathy, they may default to material possessions as the “least effective” lever, a strategy summarized as “Look at my car, beep beep, vroom vroom”.

This attempt to acquire attention through material displays is likened to “junk food: very tempting, immediately satisfying, but long-term damaging” for gaining durable respect, especially from the people whose opinions matter most, such as close friends and family.

3. Enduring happiness is contentment, not a dopamine rush

When people chase happiness through spending, they are usually seeking a “buzz of happiness,” which is fun but short lived.

A superior and more durable goal is contentment, which is achieved when you stop asking what else you need to be happy. This pursuit is challenging because the brain largely seeks dopamine, the chemical of desire that constantly asks for more, which is triggered by the anticipation and process of getting new stuff, rather than the stable possession of it.

This psychological phenomenon creates a perpetual “dopamine train” where the goalpost constantly moves, causing perpetual dissatisfaction; the millionaires look at the centimillionaires, who look at the billionaires, who then seek immortality.

If money does bring happiness, it is often indirect; for example, a nice, big house might make someone happier primarily because it makes it easier to entertain friends and family, and the relationships are the actual source of joy.

Every purchase involves a choice between utility (the item’s ability to make your life more comfortable, pleasant, or fulfilling, owned for yourself) and status (the item’s ability to change others’ opinions of you, owned for them). The author notes that a high end Toyota, loaded with options like plush seats and a great sound system, offers utility, making life better for the owner.

Conversely, a low end BMW offers primarily status, meant to impress others. When stranded on an island with no one to impress, people would instantly choose comfort, function, and durability (utility) over brand and prestige (status).

When status “devours utility,” it leads to common frustrations, such as the burden of maintaining a house that is unnecessarily large or the stress of affording a car purchased only for appearances. The discovery that many of billionaire Bill Koch’s most expensive wines were undetectable fakes further illustrates that paying a premium was for status and the idea of exclusivity, not utility.

8. Quiet Compounding: The Fastest Way to Get Rich is to Go Slow

Quiet compounding involves silently saving and investing for decades, focusing solely on internal financial goals rather than social comparisons or benchmarks. The irony of finance is that the fastest path to durable wealth is often to operate slowly. Wealth earned quickly tends to be “loud” and fragile.

It worked in Poland. It worked in France. So what do you mean it didn’t work in Russia?

That might have been the frustrated exchange echoing through the halls of the Nazi high command in Berlin during the winter of 1941, as reports flooded in from the Eastern Front.

Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union was failing. What had gone wrong?

To understand what went happened, let’s travel back nearly nine decades to the chaos of post–World War I Germany.

The year is 1933, and Germany is still recovering from the catastrophic defeat of the First World War. The Treaty of Versailles has stripped the nation of its military strength, territory, and pride.

Economically devastated and socially fractured, the country is ripe for radicalism. Adolf Hitler, a charismatic and ruthless leader rises to power by promising to restore Germany’s greatness.

Hitler's vision was one of Lebensraum “living space” for the German people, which he sought to achieve through territorial expansion, particularly to the east. To do so, he relied heavily on a revolutionary military doctrine known as Blitzkrieg, or “lightning war.”

Blitzkrieg was not just a tactic, it was a philosophy of speed, coordination, and overwhelming force. It combined rapid armored advances with close air support and mobile infantry to punch through enemy lines before they could react.

The goal was psychological as much as physical: to shock, confuse, and overwhelm the opponent into swift surrender.

This strategy proved devastatingly effective in the early campaigns of World War II.

In September 1939, Germany invaded Poland using Blitzkrieg tactics. Within weeks, Poland was defeated. The world took notice.

Then came May 1940, when Germany turned westward and launched a surprise offensive against France. Cutting through the Ardennes Forest, a move many believed impossible, German Panzer divisions raced toward the English Channel, encircling Allied forces at Dunkirk and forcing a humiliating French surrender just over a month later.

Blitzkrieg had become synonymous with German military genius. Or so it seemed.

By June 1941, Hitler was convinced that the same strategy would bring the mighty Soviet Union to its knees.

Operation Barbarossa began with a massive three-pronged assault involving millions of troops, thousands of tanks, and unparalleled aerial support.

Initially, it looked like another swift victory. Soviet forces were caught off guard, cities fell, and hundreds of thousands of Red Army soldiers were encircled and captured.

But then, something changed.

The vastness of the Soviet Union, its brutal climate, and the resilience of its people and military began to take their toll.

Unlike Poland and France, the USSR was not a small or isolated theater. It was a continental-sized battlefield where supply lines stretched thin, winters were merciless, and the enemy refused to collapse.

The Red Army, though initially disorganized, adapted quickly. Under the leadership of Joseph Stalin and later, skilled generals like Georgy Zhukov adopted scorched-earth tactics, retreated when necessary, and regrouped for counteroffensives. Cities like Leningrad and Moscow held out against all odds, becoming symbols of resistance.

Hitler and his generals had misjudged the context entirely. They assumed the Soviet Union would crumble under the weight of a lightning strike, just as Poland and France had.

But the USSR was different: it was vast, harsh, and ideologically motivated. The Soviet people, whether out of patriotism, fear, or communist fervor, fought with a tenacity that no amount of tactical brilliance could easily overcome.

Moreover, the German high command underestimated the logistical challenges of fighting such a large-scale war in extreme conditions.

The infamous Russian winter of 1941–1942 froze German equipment, bogged down supply convoys, and decimated morale. The Wehrmacht [The unified armed forces of Nazi Germany the Heer (army), the Kriegsmarine (navy) and the Luftwaffe (air force)] designed for quick victories, was unprepared for a prolonged campaign.

What was meant to be a swift Blitzkrieg turned into a war of attrition, a type of warfare in which Germany could not compete with the industrial might and human resources of the Soviet Union.

The failure of Operation Barbarossa marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany. The Eastern Front became Germany’s greatest graveyard, consuming men, material, and morale at an unsustainable rate. From Stalingrad to Kursk, the tide of war slowly but surely turned.

Blitzkrieg had lit the fire of World War II, but Hitler’s failure to understand context, and adjust tactics, ultimately quenched the fires of World War II in the snows of Russia.

It worked yesterday is no guarantee it will work today. If you’ve worked the corridors of stock and currency trading you must have heard something like “Previous successful performance does not guarantee future success.”

It is often a disclaimer to warn of the possibility of failure even though it worked for others previously.

If you are a good student of history, of which I encourage you to be one, you’ll find out that there is nothing new under the sun, patterns often repeat themselves, human beings are the same as ever.

For instance, from the days of cavemen to the current-day world, human beings have been self-preserving and self-promoting and it won’t change even in the coming millennia, hence the strategy for dealing with them does not change.

However, when trying to replicate things learnt, you must learn to apply it to your current context. This is what I mean by Copy and Paste but apply to style.

This newsletter is beginning to sound like my previous newsletter where I attempted to contextualize the discrepancy of demand life often places on people even if they are aiming for the same thing.

Ever heard the assertion, School is a scam? It’s an assertion born out of discontent with the type of education offered in conventional school settings and the relative economic ROI it produces.

Is it true? Yes. Very true. Schools are designed to produce economic slaves, indentured servants that oil the economic machine of entrepreneurial vehicles.

If you understand the factor of production called labour you are already getting my gist. If you don’t, go back and collect your secondary school fees from your Business Studies and Economics teacher……sorry for the unkind joke, if you fell victim.✌️

But wait a minute, as unrewarding as school might seem when applied to some people’s context, it is not a scam, in fact it is the way out of poverty for many families.

I even have a fun fact that often replicates most of the time. If your grandparents, especially your grandmother, had tertiary education, you’d most likely be part of the Nigerian upper-middle class economically.

This might begin to bring confusion into your mind. Is school a scam or not? That is not a smart question to ask. The right question to ask is, Is school a scam for me or not?

One of my favourite books of the Bible is the book of Proverbs.

In one of his admonitions, King Solomon, one of the wisest sages that ever walked the face of the earth, had this to say:

“Answer a fool according to his folly lest he thinks he is wise.” Then he immediately goes on to say “Do not answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own eyes.”

Now this brings a measure of confusion. Should I answer or not? Again this is a foolish question. The question should be, what is the context?

I personally believe one of the utility of critical thinking is the ability to hold two seemingly contradictory thought processes and make accurate decisions based on context available.

We can forgive AI models for making decisions without putting context into perspective, but life will often punish you for failing to understand context.

It was a Sunday afternoon, and the day was as bright and vibrant as its name suggested. I was at a friend's house, enjoying a weekend getaway from a busy week.

As I relaxed, a young man walked into the room. He was one of my friend's cousins, and for this story, I'll call him Gbenga since I didn't get his permission to use his real name. Gbenga was a sharp young man, likely in his mid-teens.

A look at him reminded me of my own teenage years, and I wondered who pressed the life-accelerator button on my life.

Just yesterday I was a teenager; now I can't even fake it. My beard would betray me. Like every enthusiastic teen, he started a conversation. "I heard you're a doctor. Is it true?"

I thought to myself, "He's not sure, and this could be an opportunity to have some fun." I replied, "No." In the middle of our conversation, another family member walked in and overheard us. He chuckled and decided to expose me.

"He's joking with you. He is a medical doctor. Look at his iPad. Here's a picture of him in scrubs." At this point, I knew I had been caught, but as usual, I still had another trick up my sleeve. I smirked mischievously like a villain about to catch his victim. "I'm a model. I always wanted to be a doctor."

He replied, "That's not possible. Besides being a model, what else have you been? Considering your use of English, I suspect you're a doctor or someone with some form of higher education. I need help. I want to be a doctor, and I'm looking for a mentor." At that point, I knew I could no longer play games; this guy was in dire need of something I had.

"Enough with the games, I guess. Yes, I am a doctor," I admitted.

"Why do you want to be a doctor?" I asked. He replied with a naïve but sincere answer, similar to what I would have given years ago: "Because I'm interested in the human body and I want to help people, especially those amputees I see on the road without limbs. I've always wondered why doctors can't do anything to restore their limbs."

I knew this guy wasn't talking about prosthetics; this young lad was already thinking about limb regeneration technology, which is still light years away from the grasp of modern medicine.

Should I start explaining the cell cycle and why some cells don't regenerate? Or should I explain to him the gravity of the path he has decided to travel?

I started with the former. I explained the cell cycle to him and also gave him a hint of hope by mentioning that some animals like reptiles and amphibians can regenerate limbs and the possibility of replicating that in Humans. You guessed it, I explained it as basically as I could.

At this point, he was wide-eyed and hanging on to every word I uttered. I can imagine what was going through his mind: "This guy is truly a doctor."

In response to his second question, I replied, "You are desiring a hard thing, but it is possible." I asked about his academic performance in his basic sciences (physics, chemistry, and biology), and they were impressive.

I am a big fan of counting the cost, so I started by asking him if he knew the economic implications of going through medical school.

Yes, I started with the economic implications, because going through medical school is capital-intensive. Mixing medical school with worry about your next meal is a recipe for mental instability.

He opened up to me that he was a "trenches kid," from a lower-class family. In fact, his potential sponsor would be his uncle, whose house we were having this conversation in, and not his parents.

At this point, I knew I had to dust off one of my folders titled "Your Fight is Different" and share it with this young lad.

"Your fight is different" is a blunt call to self-awareness, a personal SWOT analysis, if you will.

Sometimes because of your disadvantaged background, you cannot afford to approach life the same way others do.

Actions have consequences, but the weight of those consequences depends heavily on where you’re coming from.

Think of old Nollywood movies: when children were leaving the village to seek greener pastures in the city, their parents would often say, “Remember the child of whose parent you are.” What they meant was simple but profound—your fight is different.

A few weeks ago, there was an interesting conversation on Twitter ( X) about the realities of LAPO (low socioeconomic background) versus NEPO (high socioeconomic background). The gist? People from wealthier families often have a safety net.

If you’re NEPO, you can afford mistakes; if you’re LAPO, you can’t. You’re like a football team down 2–0 at halftime, every second in the next 45 minutes counts. Wrong decisions don’t punish everyone equally.

The rules of the game aren’t the same for everyone. Is that fair? No. Is it reality? Yes.

Life isn’t fair, so stop whining about it. To meet the same benchmarks, some people will have to sacrifice more and pay a higher price for the same prize.

Take two students in university: one whose parents sold property and took loans to pay fees, and another from a privileged home. The first cannot afford to waste an extra year; the second can fool around because life has already handed him a safety net.

Zoom out globally: the immigrant worker on a work-visa and the citizen of that same country are not playing on equal ground. The immigrant must often work twice as hard just to prove their worth. This imbalance repeats itself across many spheres of life.

The point is not to complain about disadvantages but to recognize them, and embrace the sacrifices required to overcome them.

Yes, you are disadvantaged. But it’s also true that you stand a fighting chance if you put in the extra effort. That extra effort is your sacrifice.
