Her name is Germania. She is 25 years old. About two hours earlier, she had finished an overnight shift at a fast food chain. She had gone home, but that morning there had been no time to sleep before leaving again.

She says she cannot wait to get on the bus, because there she can close her eyes.

That morning, the bus is the only place left for her to rest.

I did not go looking for her. The algorithms brought her, and I let them carry me through America.

We usually speak about algorithms with suspicion. Yet sometimes YouTube seems to understand what I need to see, hear and know.

Most of what it brings me is beautiful.

It shows me so many of you supporting Ukraine, so overwhelmingly, and it is hard to describe what that does for a person at night in this city.

It connects me to your country, and it is one reason I have become so interested in everything I can learn about you.

And it is easy from here to think of America as the dreamland. Opportunity, skyscrapers, New York and California, the most advanced economy on Earth…

All of that can hide the people who never entered the chain of prosperity.

Then those same algorithms made my life cross three lives in the United States, and they decided to bring me two documentaries (here and here) that kept me awake until late in the morning.

Larry, 52, works at Disney World. He earns 228 dollars a week, and 149 of them goes to a motel room.

Somebody asks whether he is proud of his name tag. He says yes, and he means it.

I have thought a lot about that little name tag. Larry had managed a large customer service department before. The job disappeared, and eventually his house disappeared too.

Now he worked at one of the most famous places on the planet and went home to a motel room with his family, the only place he can afford to live.

Then there was Terry. He was 42 years old and had been living for two years in another motel with six children.

Before the motel, he had managed sales in the car business. His family had owned a boat, and he remembered playing golf at a country club in another state.

Terry said that when the market collapsed, the illusion of security and stability went with it.

I understood him immediately.

And Germania kept working nights in fast food, mornings serving coffee, three children waiting in another motel room.

She paid about three quarters of what she earned for that room, and she could see her children for four hours a day.

They are never in the headlines.

They are remembered when politicians need their vote, and sometimes not even then, because even their address may be uncertain. Anyway, when your mind is consumed by rent, food, work and where your children will sleep, there is definitely very little space left to be a voter at all.

Before 2022, when Ukraine appeared in your newspapers, it came with one label.

The poorest country in Europe.

You may remember that.

It was arguable, and it was not far from the truth either.

So this is not a competition of suffering.

But I have known what it is to reach the end of the month with almost nothing left. I have worked in fast food too, and I know the arithmetic you do with your eyes in the aisle before the checkout.

You look at the basket, you know how much money remains, and some of it must go back to the shelf.

Watching them, I recognised a part of my own life before the documentaries had even finished.

Our worst fear is the morning our suffering becomes ordinary enough that the looking stops.

Which is what happened to Germania, Larry and Terry.

America is the most visible country on earth, and still, inside all that visibility, lives like these can become almost impossible to see.

I have kept thinking about that contradiction.

Your presidents are known everywhere. Your elections are watched everywhere. We know your billionaires, your companies, your universities and your cities.

And a few miles from Disney World, children were learning that a motel room could be home.

Somewhere else, a father was sleeping in a tent before getting up to look for work.

For a brief moment somebody pointed a camera at them.

Then the camera left.

You write to me about fear for your country, and the fear is correct.

A democracy can start failing its people long before it takes their vote. It begins when a family struggles in plain sight until the struggle becomes ordinary, and eventually they are taught that being overlooked was their own failure.

When I write from Ukraine about what deserves to survive, lives like yours are inside that argument too.

These documentaries were filmed more than a decade ago, and I cannot stop thinking about it.

Germania gave herself six years. Six years until she imagined a house, a better job, her children grown and happy. More than her six years have passed.

So Germania, I hope you made it.

I hope you got the house.

I hope there came a morning when you woke up in your own bed and there was no bus waiting to carry you from one job to another.

Larry, I hope you got out of that motel and you kept the pride you had when you showed that name tag to the camera, because your dignity in that small moment I will remember for a long time.

Terry, you said you would never be safe from losing everything again, and I hope the years proved you wrong.

And Joe, Chelsea, Tom, Amber, Daniel.

I saw you too. Your children, your cars and the tents.

I saw the applications being filled out and the mornings beginning before sunrise, and the people who had lost nearly every form of certainty and still got up the following morning.

You will probably never know that, more than a decade later, somebody in Kyiv watched those old images and wondered what became of you, but I want these words to exist anyway.

I saw you from Ukraine.

And wherever this decade carried each of you, I hope you did not lose hope along the way.

I hope the years were gentler than the days I watched.

Most of all, I hope you kept believing that the life you were fighting for was still possible.

From a country still fighting for its future, I know what it can cost to keep believing in one.

And I understand why you have to protect it.

I only remember what it does to me now.

I hear a man singing about the day his country’s music died. About a place he loved turning into a place he no longer recognized, or a loss that did not need to be explained because the people who lived inside it already knew.

He did not have to footnote the grief.

I am writing this from a country being bombed by another country that wants us erased. As I tell you almost to exhaustion, I wake up in a place where missiles have become part of the weather, where the sky can interrupt both your coffee and your attempt to remain normal at the same time.

Ukraine is not dying, that is what I kept telling myself.

We are resisting because we have no other choice, and somewhere along the way the world began to see courage in us. Before we realized it, we became a story of pride and inspiration, one that people far from here placed on posters and profile pictures.

So why did this American song keep finding me here?

Can music save your mortal soul?

I was hearing my own fear inside it, the fear that a country can survive and still begin to lose the part of itself that makes it home.

A country can be alive and still be in danger of losing its music.

Exhaustion can take it away.

It comes from the small humiliations of survival and from the anger that grows when the war lasts too long, even as people far away write to us and remind us that they have not forgotten.

The loss I hear in that song unfolded so gradually that people could argue about whether it was happening at all.

Ukraine is brave, yes. But we are also tired people in apartments with cracked windows. We misunderstand each other, lose patience, wake up heavy, and still have to continue.

The war did not turn us into saints. It revealed what was already inside us, then went to work changing it.

You are not at war in America, but you know something about waking up in a place that no longer answers to its own name.

You know what it is to watch cruelty performed in public and hear it called strength.

This is when the proud story usually leaves out. The border is only one place where a country is saved.

The rest happens in places no drone can photograph.

In the kitchen after a bad night.

In the moment you could become cruel, and you do not.

I think this is where a country either keeps its music or loses it.

An army holds a border. The life behind it depends on people who are already tired, and nobody can order them to preserve it.

They carry it in memory and in the decision to protect the last of their humanity when things around them makes that decision look foolish.

I hear a man returning to the place where music once lived, only to discover that the music wouldn’t play.

A country that is losing itself from within.

I am writing from a country fighting with everything it has to keep its own.

And I no longer think that song belongs only to America in 1971.

It is asking whether the music is gone.

Or whether some of us are still carrying it.

My American friends, you may barely know that a World Cup is happening right now in your own country.

Football, the one you call soccer, was never really your sport. But what is unfolding there as I write you has no precedent, and you should know about it.

Your national team is playing well, the morale is high. Then your striker, Folarin Balogun, who is a great player by the way, received a red card in the last match.

A red card in football means the player is expelled from the game immediately and banned from the next one. The ban is automatic, and it is one of the untouchable rules of the sport.

That next match starts in a few hours, against Belgium.

And you may find it hard to believe what I will tell you next.

Donald Trump called the president of FIFA, the organization that runs world football, and personally asked for the case to be reviewed.

And surprise, FIFA suspended the ban.

Balogun can now play.

Understand what just happened. A head of state picked up the phone and changed the rules of the biggest sport competition on Earth for his own team.

Even Europe’s football body called the decision incomprehensible, Belgium’s federation said it was astonished. And Trump thanked FIFA publicly for “reversing a great injustice.”

This is the man that already told us he wants to be a king.

Kings do not ask like ordinary people. Kings reach into everything, sport included, just to prove their fingers fit everywhere.

Many of us in Ukraine watch these matches late at night and early in the morning, sometimes while drones are attacking our cities. These games lend us a few hours away from the war, and we cheer for the nations that stand with us.”

America was always first on my list.

The match starts at 3 AM in Kyiv, and I will be awake, as usual. But tonight, for the first time in many years, I will not cheer for the USA.

It hurts me deeply, and I am really sorry for that.

Those players earned their place with honor, but the team now carries his fingerprints, and I cannot stand behind anything this man touches. He has poured too much suffering over people in America and far beyond it.

So tonight I cheer for Belgium, who is a friend of Ukraine anyway.

And if Belgium wins, it will carry a small message across the ocean:

The wheel of justice still turns for everyone.

Even for the man who wants to be king.

About two months ago, the messages started to arrive.

They were not the usual ones. I am used to Russia defenders and to people telling me Ukraine will lose. These were specific.

They told me I had crossed a line by writing about the United States, and that I was being watched. That I had no right to speak about a country where I do not vote, do not live, do not belong…

They told me what “could happen” to me if I kept writing here. Honestly, I did not take it seriously, people who can really do something rarely announce it first.

I knew the language and I knew the posture. Men far from danger, trying to sound dangerous.

But one of them mentioned they had “a way” to shut me down from the internet.

I wish I could write that I laughed and kept going as if nothing had happened. It would make a better story, but it would not be true.

I stopped because the threat touched the one place I am most afraid to lose:

How would I survive a situation where my voice was taken from me?

For a long time now, writing is how I remain a person inside the pressure of this war. If someone could take that away, what would be left?

I carried that question for weeks like a stone in my pocket.

And then the answer became a little embarrassing, because it was so clear all the time and I took weeks to realize.

I have spent almost four years writing from a country at war. I have written about men walking toward fire because someone had to go. About people returning to work after funerals, about cities the world had already prepared to mourn but are still standing on the map.

Every word of it came from inside the country where it happened, and I was going to stop because of strangers throwing threats online from somewhere safe?

No.

The Freedom Line does not have the word love in its name. My other journal does. This place was born from something different.

It is my letter to my friends in the United States. It is Ukraine reaching across the ocean with the only thing we can give from experience, which is how people keep standing when the ground is taken from them.

When the government of the United States moves closer to the country trying to erase Ukraine, that is not American internal politics anymore. It reaches my street and everything around me.

So yes, I will write about it.

I write as Ukrainian, and that is the only credential I need.

The same forces that want Ukraine erased want Americans too tired to resist and too ashamed to trust their own decency.

Putin in Moscow, his admirers in Washington.

Your fight against authoritarianism and our fight against invasion belong to the same line across two continents.

That is the line this journal is named for.

The place where freedom is defended by people who do not accept to be told it has already been lost.

The threats made me afraid at first, then they reminded me why this place has to exist.

The line was shaken. I will not pretend it wasn’t.

But I am writing to you again here.

Which means it held.

The man who wants to be a king, who I once promised I wouldn’t name again, called the protests a joke.

He also said he is not a fascist.

As if anyone who is would ever say that.

Fascism is not something a person admits.

We have enough history to know that.

It is ugly and violent.

It destroys everything it touches.

No one stands in front of a nation and says, “Yes, I’m a fascist, let’s make it official.”

They deny and laugh.

They turn it into a joke.

And when you react, they say you misunderstood.

Then you are told you are too emotional, too sensitive, and that was never meant that way.

There is a word for that:

Manipulation.

You are listening to the language of abuse.

And when it comes from a man in power, it becomes a nation being pushed into accepting what should never be accepted.

People who have the right to name what they see and the responsibility to do it.

Because avoiding the word changes nothing.

It only pushes the moment closer.

You are already feeling it.

That is why you are in the streets today.

Nobody goes to a protest for comfort.

You go because something in you would not let you stay home.

You don’t accept this as normal and understand what is happening.

This is about power.

About a man who places himself above the people, then laughs when you notice.

About turning everything into performance so nothing can be held accountable.

About pushing the line, again and again, to see how far it can go.

This is how every tragedy begins.

Tragedies don’t come with a declaration.

They come with ridicule.

With a crown worn “as a joke.”

You are not wrong to take this seriously.

You are early.

And history has shown what happens to those who ignore moments like this.

In my side of the world, I recognize this.

The language, the behavior.

The pattern.

And I know where it leads.

That is why what you are doing is important today.

Coming together reminds you that you are not alone.

That you are many.

That you still have power.

People who refuse to be reduced.

People who refuse to be spoken down to.

To accept what they know is wrong.

You are not a joke.

You are the line.

And from a country that learned this through pain, I remind you:

This is where history turns.

And you are standing inside it.

Wet coats by the door. Coffee slightly burned.

Minus ten outside, I had escaped the cold and found refuge.

The television was glowing with men’s figure skating from the Olympics. The screen brighter than that gray Kyiv afternoon.

For three minutes, the world looked stable.

An American skater stepped into the rink.

Behind me, a chair scraped.

“I’m not cheering for them”, a man said.

“The United States is a colonial power. Look at Trump. Look at the far right. That’s who they are.”

“Fascism in suits. That’s America”, the other added.

I didn’t expect to feel protective, but I did.

You know that moment when something inside you decides before your mind does?

I could feel my pulse in my throat.

I turned around and said:

“You couldn’t say anything more lazy than that.”

They looked at me, surprised more than angry. They were not expecting a war between tables.

“America is not one man and it’s not one party”, I said

They began listing headlines. ICE raids. Extremism. Authoritarian drift…

I let them speak, then I leaned forward and said:

“Let me remind you that both of us were born in the Soviet Union. Do you remember what it felt like when the world treated us as the system? When they saw Moscow and never us?

Silence.

We grew up inside a machine that spoke in our name. We know what it means to be mistaken for a regime you never chose.

And yes, America is in trouble.

I read the essays. I see Americans writing about due process being treated like a suggestion. About laws bending. About communities afraid. About neighbors forming lines to protect each other.

I remember parks cancelling celebrations because people are afraid to show up to the birthday of the country they live in.

That is a country fighting for itself.

“If not for the United States, we might not be sitting here arguing. We might be forced to speak Russian under occupation, or not speaking at all.”

One of them replied, “The American people aren’t here fighting with us.”

I looked at him and thought of you.

Of all the emails, the comments, the messages that begin with “I’m just an ordinary American but…”

The teacher in Ohio,

The veteran in Texas.

The woman in Minneapolis who keeps a Ukrainian flag in her window so her community remember what is at stake.

You fight in your own way.

I know you are exhausted. I read it in your letters.

You argue about your Constitution the way we argue about our survival.

You call your representatives. You push back when power stretches too far. You refuse to let Ukraine disappear from your conversations.

Public pressure in your country keeps aid alive. Keeps sanctions in place. Keeps our name present in rooms where decisions are made.

Without that pressure, we would be weaker. Possibly broken.

So when the American skater landed his jump, I clapped.

I clapped because when they said, “That’s America,” something rose in me.

I clapped for a country that is wrestling with itself instead of surrendering. For citizens who love their nation enough to argue about its soul.

If you are reading this from the United States, know that when someone here reduces you to your worst politicians, I will stand up.

Generations of Ukrainians know what it means to be mistaken for a system that ruled over them.

War tries to shrink everything. Identities, alliances.

Gratitude.

I will not let it shrink this.

You have stood up for us.

I will stand up for you.

Me, Viktor, watching from Ukraine.

That puts me in the same uncomfortable sentence as Donald Trump, because he said the same thing.

For a second, I was worried about what kind of person I was becoming, but soon the distance appeared.

Because while he was enraged, I was completely overwhelmed. While he despised, I felt represented.

While he complained, I cried.

And this time, my friends, it was my turn to cry.

Something that began in California last night crossed oceans and continents and landed straight inside me.

I must confess that I do not understand American football. I have watched the Super Bowl a few times and still do not know why the clock behaves the way it does. The moves, the points. The endless pauses...

I admit that I watch for the halftime show. And this year, halftime did something historic.

It was the first time I heard about Bad Bunny. I honestly imagined a rabbit, so you can get my level of ignorance.

Then he walked onto the field and sang entirely in Spanish.

I have always found Spanish melodic and beautiful. I am a longtime fan of Enrique Iglesias and always thought his songs sounded better in Spanish anyway.

But this was different.

I did not understand what Bad Bunny was saying, yet it was immediately clear that something historic was happening.

That man was making the strongest possible political statement in the most American event imaginable, without slogans, without shouting, without asking permission.

Watching this from Ukraine was visceral.

A man from a Caribbean island, singing in a language I do not understand, represented me as if he were my compatriot. Not as a foreigner or someone passing by.

As a human being.

And representing millions of Americans too. The ones who reject hate and stupidity. The ones who know their country is bigger than anger.

Standing there, in the heart of America, he showed something essential.

Your country is not that circumstantial “person” in the White House.

The United States of America is more than diversity. It is a nation that celebrates it, and understands that this is a fundamental value for any country that wants to be great.

A country built by people who arrived and keep arriving from everywhere and stayed. Across centuries. Immigrants and their children.

A nation that does not need to be great again, because it never stopped being.

Bad Bunny standing there, refusing to bend or translate himself, was an act of courage that only a truly great nation can contain.

Anyone only need fourteen minutes to see that.

When power says, “I do not understand you,” what it really means is, “I cannot control you.”

In my powerless case, I simply could not control my tears.

And I understood something important:

You are in good company.

Dear Donald,

Considering you personally stopped “eight wars,” plus several bonus wars that existed only in your head, I am honored to reply to a man clearly working on a scale the rest of us cannot see.

You explain that because a peace prize committee failed to recognize your greatness, you are now liberated from the inconvenience of thinking about peace at all. Let me tell you, Donald, now that you have earned the rare distinction of being the most disliked men on the planet, peace should probably matter to you more than anyone else.

When people stop liking you, it is usually a good idea to stop making new enemies.

You claim Denmark cannot protect its land from Russia and China. We heard a very similar sentence about Ukraine, spoken in Russian and with even more confidence. As you know, that did not go as planned.

You ask why countries have a right to their land. You question documents, borders, history. You prefer boats. That is adorable. Let me help you with your own logic: we had Vikings and their boats on the Dnipro river about ten centuries ago. They were part of the social fabric of this land.

You may find this surprising, but Sweden and Norway are not claiming Ukraine today. They are not asking for maps or demanding territory. Instead, they are among our strongest partners, and they are openly embarrassed by how you are behaving right now.

You say you have done “more for NATO than any other person.” That suggests you still see yourself as a person. As a Ukrainian, I am trained to look for hope in the smallest signs, but I am just not sure yet if this one is hopeful or deeply alarming.

But you definitely did something historic, Donald. You united people. You clarified that you should never be trusted. NATO does owe you something, just not what you think:

No one else has managed to unite Europe and people everywhere, including inside your own country, simply by existing the way you do.

One of these is that you have the impression that you are competing for attention.

Ukraine is only one of many wars, I know that. But at some point, every other conflict in the world starts to feel like a “rival.”

It is not because we stopped caring, but the knowledge that memory is oxygen.

My country survives because the world still remembers that we exist. Because people all over the world keep saying our name.

So I write from a place where forgetting is deadly.

Every life lost in any war is urgent. Every one. Yet when you live under bombs, your instinct is to guard the light that remains on you.

And then Greenland happened.

It seemed so distant. Arctic maps, north pole, something almost abstract.

But when I listened to the words of the president of the United States, I felt the danger before I understood the words

I had heard that language before.

When that man talks about taking Greenland, he does not talk about people.

He talks about control, power, assets.

He talks as if consent were optional and sovereignty a technical detail.

That is how invasions begin.

It is exactly how Vladimir Putin spoke about Ukraine.

Security, destiny, strategic need.

The same cynical voice explaining why someone else’s home should no longer belong to them.

The same certainty that power creates permission.

In that moment, Greenland stopped being far away.

Greenland became Ukraine.

We may be so far away in the map, but the colonial logic does not change with latitude.

This broken logic only needs appettite and confidence.

It needs a sick leader who sees the world as a board and countries as pieces.

Someone who mistakes strength for entitlement.

I live inside its consequences that follows this thinking.

Maps turn into targets, agreements become jokes.

A lawless world returning one speech at a time until it eventually becomes another “new normal”

This is not about choosing which suffering matters more, but to recognize the same disease when it appears again.

Refusing to pretend it is anything else.

From a country that was told it did not really belong to itself, I am saying this clearly:

Leave Greenland alone.

Believe me, I know where this road goes.

I did not expect to write this word from an invaded country and feel it land so close to home.

Two months passed since my last article here in this journal The Freedom Line. Some asked if I had abandoned, but I had not.

I was taking some considerations because I was receiving threats. Messages telling me to stay out of American domestic matters. Strange messages telling me to be “careful.”

After four years writing about war, I am past the point of being frightened by words.

I read them and thought something very simple:

What threat is bigger than Russia?

I write from a place where missiles decide the rhythm of days. Where fear has already failed as a tool of control.

If intimidation worked, Ukraine would have disappeared long ago. Trolls and random “warnings” do not scare me.

What scares me is silence when an evil pattern becomes clear.

And Minneapolis made that pattern impossible to ignore.

A woman shot. Federal forces acting above the law. Language twisted until killing becomes protection and protest becomes terrorism. More agents sent, no truth offered.

This is not disorder, my friends.

This is method. Design.

Every authoritarian system follows the same path. Unidentified units appear with hidden faces and unmarked cars. Oversight is removed, immunity is granted, cruelty is renamed as safety…

Those who act above the law are protected, and who dare to exist in the way are criminalized.

I know this script. It is familiar to every generation of Ukrainians.

Renee Nicole Good reminded me of people in Kharkiv, Kyiv, Dnipro. Places where ordinary people were told they were a danger simply by existing.

Over these four years of war, Minnesota has been present in my life in a very real way.

People from all over the North Star State, Minneapolis, St. Paul, Duluth, wrote to me so many times, telling me that Ukraine inspired them.

Duluth, where Bob Dylan was born, was an added honor to me at a time when we are needing so much the answers that are still blowing in the wind…

Everywhere, you said that our resistance in Ukraine gave you strength.

Now it’s you that are inspiring us.

Minneapolis and Sevastopol, in our stolen Crimea, share the same latitude, forty five north. But what truly links us today is resistance, not geography.

I still remember a message I received last year. A kind reader from Minnesota wrote to me from her hospital bed while going through cancer treatment. She told me that reading one of my articles made her remember she was still alive.

In her words, not just breathing, but alive.

I did not know how to answer her then, I still do not. But I know that message became part of this line.

It was proof that this was never only about a distant war on another continent, but a place where life crossed borders and reached people who were hurting.

Here and there. There and here.

That is why what I am seeing now in the United States is so personal to me.

I am shocked by how fast things are deteriorating in America. Scenes we never thought we would witness on American soil are now real.

Armed intimidation, fear used openly as policy. And there has not even been one full year of this government.

The man leading your country is now using the same methods as the man invading mine.

This is not exaggeration.

We have learned that cruelty advances only when people decide to lie down.

I stand with Minneapolis. I stand with Renee.

Just as you have stood with Ukraine.

Minneapolis is Kyiv.

The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, in the distant but never forgotten year of 1918, the nations signed the armistice that effectively ended the First World War.

From that “silence” came Armistice Day, and later, Veterans Day.

A day not to glorify war, but to remember what it costs to end one.

That same breath of peace still echoes here in Ukraine.

It moves through our streets when the sirens fall silent for a few hours.

Because every generation must learn that peace is never inherited but defended by those brave enough to believe in it.

I see that lesson every day in this country.

Being volunteers carrying food or soldiers sharing bread, they remind me that freedom is not a word but a daily act.

One of the things that pleases me most about connecting with people around the world through this journal is learning about your national holidays and the meanings behind them.

They say so much more about your country, your people, than those unfortunate ones who sometimes occupy the palaces…

So much more, in fact, that I almost forget there’s a man called Donald in your capital.

Veterans Day is one of the most beautiful among them because for me it seems a day that holds both love and sorrow in the same memory.

A day that remembers the cost of being human enough to fight for peace.

Many of you who read me here are veterans yourselves, from every corner of the United States of America and beyond.

You send stories that feel so much like letters from home.

I’ve heard so many times from sons and daughters of veterans who are no longer with us, who tell me their fathers or grandfathers would be surely be standing with Ukraine if they were alive today.

And I believe that.

The strength that built America’s peace still beats in the hearts of those who refuse to give up on ours.

When I read your letters, I hear the same heartbeat.

The same belief that what unites us is not language or distance, but the will to protect our most basic values of civilization and justice.

War begins with men who mistake power for purpose, but peace endures because people like you still believe in dignity.

That’s what gives meaning to all of this.

To every American veteran, and every family who carries their legacy, thank you.

May the courage of your veterans light our nights here, until peace breathes again over both our skies.

The United States of America.

A nation that was born to escape a king.

A country that was built on defiance and inspired the whole world for that, is remembering how to use it.

This Saturday is not another protest.

We can hear the echo of that first rebellion, when some farmers and dreamers who once looked across the ocean at a crown stood up and said, “no more.”

They were fighting an empire, yes, but that was not the whole point: They were fighting the idea that some lives were born to obey.

The king of that time called them traitors, but history recognized in them the beginning of freedom.

And now, you, the descendants of those same “rebels,” will walk the same streets again.

This time without muskets, in peace, but with the most powerful of all weapons:

This time will not be against a foreign monarch, but against the disease of power that forgets its place

A sickness that can rise anywhere, across the ocean or right at home.

No Kings.

That’s not a slogan.

It’s a promise that outlived every throne that tried to silence it.

This weekend, America isn’t only protesting.

It’s remembering.

Remembering that power is a loan, not a birthright.

That governments serve, or they fall.

That the Declaration was never written in past tense.

In Ukraine, we watch your preparations this week with a mix of excitement and anxiety, and we can feel it building.

Teachers, nurses, veterans, parents, people who never thought of themselves as activists are printing signs, learning de-escalation rules, charging their phones, packing water…

That moment when fear stops being private and turns collective, when people stop asking “What if?” and begin saying “Enough.”

We have lived under the invasion ordered by a man who called himself eternal.

And we’ve learned something that cannot be unlearned:

Not as guests in your story, but as witnesses who understand what it costs to stay human.

This is about drawing a line that no crown can cross.

The sound of a nation remembering itself.

Portland, Oregon. A city that is always remembered when we talk about a place that lives for the love of peace and for the respect of everyone who thinks differently or feels different in some way.

For all accounts, the city is calm. Communities are strong, and people take care of each other. There’s nothing more than the usual big city problems you would find anywhere in the world.

I always notice so many kind comments from Portland and Oregon whenever the subject is Ukraine, and many of my readers proudly tell me they are from there.

So this is also a personal matter to me, and here goes some observations from a real warzone.

For everyone in America, and especially for my friends in Portland.

This is the usual script of the authoritarians: exaggerate chaos, paint peaceful protest as violence. Calling your own people prisoners in their homes, then roll in soldiers to allegedly “save” them.

I know this script too well. Ukrainians have seen it for generations. Soldiers used as props to spread fear, propaganda machines working overtime to convince the world of some bullshit.

That’s never “protection.” That’s control.

That is an experiment of control that will be extended to many other places where the political environment resembles the one in Portland.

Portland isn’t random. It’s a city that stood for Ukraine when we needed voices, and this is certainly one more reason why this is probably also personal to that orange monster.

(I am trying to stay away from writing his name, sorry if it seems rude).

And now he sends two hundred troops to frighten and to train the military against their own citizens.

That is dystopian.

That is what authoritarianism looks like when it stops pretending.

I was born in the Soviet Union. I know what it means when leaders lie about your streets to justify force. When reality is turned upside down to make neighbors look like enemies.

Freedom is always taken like this, it starts with words and ends with boots.

That monster knows very well that Portland is a place of people who stand, and that he will find resistance at every single step.

That’s what matters: people standing anyway.

Friends from Portland, this is what Ukrainians feel every day. Propaganda telling us we don’t exist. Soldiers sent to scare us into staying small.

But fear doesn’t end the story. Someone shows up.

Then another.

Courage spreads.

This is the same fight. One line of freedom, stretched from our streets to yours.

No one will ever steal our right to be ourselves.

Our right to be happy.

Our right to live in a place where we respect each other.

Think about that for a bit. He is in your country, walking the same streets and breathing the same air. And he is not there to take a walk in Central Park or Times Square.

He is carrying a country on his back, with eyes that haven’t rested in years.

Just like millions of eyes in his country.

I don’t know if he will leave New York City, but imagine if he walked into your town today, what would you do?

Would you stand and clap politely, or would you let yourself feel that the fight of this man doesn’t stop at Ukraine’s borders?

Volodymyr does not visit the United Nations as another politician seeking applause. He’s a man who traded ordinary life for the chance that we might still have one.

He comes to remind you that freedom is not something you inherit, it is something you defend, even when the enemy in question is much bigger than you and has nuclear weapons.

Politics has always been a dirty game, everyone knows that. But once in a while, someone makes it something more.

It happens when a man decides that every comfort and every ordinary day can be sacrificed if it means his people will still exist tomorrow.

That is what courage looks like. That is the definition of leadership.

And then there is Trump.

He now says: “Zelenskyy is brave. Ukraine is putting up one hell of a fight.”

It sounds respectful, what a miracle.

But what do words really mean from a man who a few weeks ago was giving red carpets to Putin?

Someone who sees our blood as something he could bargain with?

His praise costs nothing. His respect is paper.

But the picture stays: a man who came out of war, facing another who drowned himself in shame. Who once tried to sell us cheap.

Tell me, who looks like the leader?

Zelenskyy is in your country now.

And whether you like it or not, he has a question to ask.

A question for you, the people. Not for authorities or other politicians.

Forget the talk of diplomacy or Nobel Prizes. Forget the ceremonies.

He is waiting at your door to ask you only one thing:

What side are you on?

You know who I am talking about. What happened in Utah.

These last couple of days I read quite a lot about him, his voice, his statements. But I will not share my opinion about him because the point is not him.

The point is that people are being shot because of their political opinions, and I am terrified to see the dangerous climate of dissent unfolding in front of you, my friends in America.

It was someone from the right, yesterday someone from the left, and now we have that dangerous blame game again:

The right blames the left for not being sensible to the murdered, the left blames the right for the right of not blaming someone with such radical positions, people on the left are blaming others on the left for not mourning the man of the right while others on the left blaming those who do mourn him…

If this is not the perfect storm, I don’t know what it is.

No one understands anyone. But do you understand how close you are to the cliff?

It doesn’t matter if the dead man wore your colors or theirs, only that someone decided a speech was worth a life.

One more life stolen under the spotlight, and you will not even remember what democracy felt like someday.

You know from where I’m writing this.

This is a country that knows what happens when bullets replace arguments.

It’s been like that here for centuries. Always like that. A continent of people killing each other.

And America is exactly the idea that another world is possible.

Because in this continent, with rare exceptions, history has been nothing but people killing each other for power, for land, for the illusion of control.

In this side of the Atlantic, my friends, life was so cheap it didn’t even need a market. We were disposable assets of kings and landlords. But America, since the beginning, with all the problems and challenges, America was founded on a different idea.

Forget freedom as you might think. I am talking about the most basic possible freedom which is to live.

The freedom of having a life.

The most basic freedom in life, well, it’s precisely life.

And this is something that has been denied to Europeans since the first tribes gathered. We are trying so hard to revert it in the last decades, and as you may see here in Ukraine, we are failing miserably.

We will probably never manage to make that happen. But you in America, you were founded on the promise that life has a value.

On the promise that everyone has the right to live because nothing is more valuable than a human life.

You don’t need someone from this broken continent to tell you that you have something special to protect.

You are something special just because you are the United States of America.

You exist because of a promise.

Even with all possible imperfections, I’m trying to be realist, that promise is still what makes you great: that people are not worth by what they have but by what they are.

I’m here to remember you some people are trying to use the assassination to polarize your society and justify violence against everyone who doesn’t agree with the group in power.

This soil I am stepping in has seen it too many times, don’t let it happen with you.

You are only strong if you are united, otherwise you would be called by another name.

We need you united because we need you existing, and without you, this continent will be back in the usual chaos of history.

The chaos where the masses of which I belong to will return to the cheapest shelves of the market of souls.

The “political ball” is on their side, after all, there’s an assassination on the table.

But if you don’t share his ideas, please don’t fall for provocations. Please don’t let your emotions dictate actions that could be mistakenly taken and, worse, used by the evil marketers of politics waiting for chaos to justify their dirty hands on society.

We all know which side likes to handle violence as a strategy of domination. Even if they say the contrary.

Please don’t let nothing steal your ability to negotiate, your ability to stay united in a common goal. Your ability to manage your emotions and stay clear of unreasonable thoughts.

It’s not the time to gain new enemies or to engage in new arguments.

Emotions are the battlefield they are trying to drag you to.

Do not step onto it.

Because the world is watching you, America.

Ukraine is watching you with anxiety.

And the world needs you strong and united more than ever.

What to write about September 11 that was not written in the last 24 years?

That night, Ukraine was still sleeping. It was the first hours of the day and when I woke up at 6 in the morning the towers were already gone.

But this is not another text about feelings and poetry like I do in my other journal. This is The Freedom Line, where we are going deep on how practical is the friendship between nations that choose democracy as their priority.

We are not here only to remember, but to plan, to fight, to understand.

And from Ukraine, my friends, my mission here is to remind you that the War on Terror was never concluded.

The same terrorism that targeted New York City 24 years ago is the one targeting this country today. Today and in the last thousand and hundreds more days. And like then, threatening the entire free world just as in that not-so-distant beginning of the century.

I mentioned that this is a place to be practical, so let’s proceed.

Do you remember what happened the following day? On September 12, 2001, NATO invoked Article 5 of its treaty for the first time in history. It declared that an attack on one was an attack on all.

America’s wound became everyone’s cause.

Please, someone with courage in Brussels, Washington, anywhere, please stop the arguments about whether Ukraine should be admitted or not.

Treat us as if we already are.

In Ukraine it is already September 12, so if you don’t want to make that in honor of 9/11, make that as a tribute to the anniversary of the “invocation” of the article.

Everyone knows that we have already proven that we can be a full member of NATO. Just as the world united around America then, Ukraine asks the world, the free world, to really unite around us now.

NATO must remember what it really means to be a shield.

If you are part of the NATO staff, then at least answer this: two nights ago, Russia sent drones into the territory of Poland. Polish territory. NATO territory. Fighter jets scrambled. Explosions lit the night. Article 4 has been invoked, or there were talks about it.

I don’t remember the difference between Article 4 and 5, but I’m not here to tell what’s written in treaties. I’m here to remind you that the greatest sponsor of terrorism in our current times is a state, a full member of the United Nations, and with working embassies in your capitals.

You remember where you were on that September 11. I do too. But none of us remember anymore which morning began with the missiles in Kyiv, which night ended with the fire in Odesa, when Bucha’s graves were opened, when Kharkiv burned…

Enough. My practical statement is done.

Unless this alliance remembers what it means to stand as one, that will be your tomorrow too.

In Moscow, they are not only planning it.

They are already promising it.

There was a time when I was really worried about what people would think, a single negative comment was enough to break my day and sometimes more. These days are over. I am here to express whatever comes to my mind and whatever I judge can be important for society.

This Freedom Line is not only a journal where I talk about freedom as a “civilizational matter,” but my own personal freedom to share my points and my dreams without the fear of the cowards online.

I know some will blame me for interfering in the business of another country. There will be accusations of me not knowing the reality of the United States and that I should step there and pay taxes to express an opinion. But I absolutely don’t need to be American to be horrified by tragedies when people kill innocent children, for the precise same reason you don’t need to be Ukrainian to feel what we feel in this hell of invasion that seems it will never stop.

I don’t need to understand your laws, your history, I don’t need to be a father, I just need to find the rest of humanity that happens to be inside me, to feel my liver and my guts smashed, all touched by outrage.

Because I am not speaking from your Constitution. I am speaking from mass graves. From shelters where families hide.

From schools that no longer stand after missiles.

My question to you, friends in America:

Are your schools still standing?

I am sorry to inform you but your schools are not standing anymore either.

At the moment you lose your educational institutions to the fear of a mass shooter anywhere at any time, and at the moment you lose so many of your children to these tragedies, you don’t have schools anymore.

You have lost the greatest sanctuary of society, the foundation of your civilization, the place where the future and hope are built together and combined into the same thing.

At each tragedy like that this week, there’s no other way to put it, you are losing your nation.

And I cannot admit that.

Let me say that clearly: I cannot accept that a nation where so much generosity is directed towards my nation, so much solidarity, so much support, so many tears, would lose the idea of its nation just because some people there are obsessed with a Second Amendment or whatever relates to freedom of self-defense.

Freedom of carrying guns. Can’t you see the obvious?

Your freedom to carry guns is literally killing the most fundamental freedom of all, which is being alive.

I know that many of you see the obvious logic that the freedom of having assault rifles as civilian defense is the reason for most of these tragedies. There’s no naivety here: it’s also obvious that I know it, as I have been more than 3 years writing to you here and even though distant we are connected on many opinions and beliefs.

But what’s not obvious is someone needing to come from Ukraine to say to you that you need to do something urgently to change your laws about weapons.

I am writing this on a keyboard full of characters that are not part of my native alphabet and no one in my family ever understood it, and I am writing that exclusively because I had a school to learn them (and a very special teacher that made me fall in love with English and also with her, but that’s another story).

I am writing this from a country where carrying a rifle was never a choice but a matter of survival, where no one ever had the luxury of seeing weapons as symbols.

You are reading someone living in a country invaded by an atomic power telling you that weapons are not defense, but death.

I hate every single moment when I had to touch a rifle in my life. And may I tell you the reason for that? Because every time you are touching a weapon like that, you are not defending yourself, you are making yourself ready to kill someone.

Ready to kill.

Every time you carry a gun you are ready to take the life of someone.

And that is only acceptable if there’s someone trying to negate the existence of your country and negate your culture, your language, committing widespread and declared genocide against your own nation.

With those failed project of people called Russians, we don’t have channels of dialogue. We need to be ready to kill because this side of the world has been converted into a jungle where those who don’t kill are killed.

No one will ever convince me that urban violence must ensure you the right of having an AR-15 or whatever mass-killing machine to prevent your petty crime.

No one could ever find it normal to live in a society where your neighbor, or the stranger sitting beside you in a restaurant, might be carrying a lethal weapon and might use it against you in a moment of confusion or in a mistaken projection of threat.

I am sorry, but that is so outrageous.

My suggestion to you is to leave the guns to the Police. Imperfect as they are, at least they restrict access, at least they make these mass shootings harder to repeat.

Please try to restrict them or at least remove the easy access. Try it for five years. After those years, bring me your statistics. If nothing changes, go back to your Second Amendment.

Or wait for the Russians to invade some of your peninsulas or the eastern part of your territory, in this case I would remove my suggestion.

But for now, try it. For your children, not for me or you.

A part of each one of us dies with every tragedy like that, but it must be for our children.

Because they are dying in full, not in part.

Next week Minneapolis will already be old news.

And somewhere else will be news again, unfortunately.

But the part of us still alive must decide that repeating headlines mean we are choosing death over change.

Would you bury every shirt, every scarf, every memory of the color red, just to avoid being mistaken for one of them?

That is what they want.

Trump and his hats.

Like the Soviets and their flags.

The monsters of history, wrapping themselves in red until good people start to run from it.

But look closer.

Look at your hands. Imagine what’s under your skin.

Feel your pulse.

You are red.

Inside, all of us are.

Ukraine. America. Every land, every faith.

Every origin.

No matter your ethnicity, your citizenship status, your income, how you look.

We meet in the same color.

Do you see how obscene it is to let them take it?

To let red, the color that pulses in you when you hold your child, when you run, when you’re afraid, when you’re in love, be reduced to the uniform of those liars?

The precise thing that makes us human, be worn like a mask by people who forgotten their own humanity?

If we let them own red, we let our enemies own life.

And never forget that red is also in the maple leaf of Canada, a country that has stood firmly for freedom, and for that very reason is also threatened by the same “red wave” of history.

That one with its horrible red hats as symbols in the other side of their border.

When I see the red of the Canadian flag, I see honor and generosity.

I see proof that this color can carry dignity across centuries.

Remember that every time when you feel tempted to see red only as a stain of shame.

Red is also the price of resistance, the proof we are alive.

Ukraine does not have red on the flag, but it is here too.

But not on banners or slogans.

Red is the color we see on the floor after a blast. The one which stains the bandages in the shelters.

Red is what mixes with dust when we pull someone out of the rubble.

That is red, and it was never theirs.

Red does not need to be seen in a flag to be there.

Red is yours.

It is mine. It is every life still beating.

Red is Vermont during the autumn.

Red is Washington State during spring.

Red is New York City every time a day choses to say goodbye with a particular spectacle.

The tyrants can try to hide themselves in a color, but they will never own it.

Because red does not belong to political parties or ideologies.

Red belongs to the living.

And we are still here.

Every detail in politics is intentional. Nothing in diplomacy is ever casual. And here, the absurdity is not between the lines, but shouting at us.

“Trump 2028.”
“Trump is Right.”
“Four More Years.”

All of it in plain defiance of the Constitution. All of it staged as if the presidency were a mall kiosk, as if the institutions were just another item for sale.

He was communicating the guests he considers himself above the laws, above the justice, above his own people.

He is the kidnapper who brings the hostage to his arsenal to show his weapons and his open willingness to use them.

The “Gulf of America” cap was there, showing that he also considers himself above geography, above history, above the maps.

It was a deliberate insult staged in plain view.

He was showing how little regard he has for President Zelenskyy, who is losing people because of a geography “interpretation” from another sick man, but in Russia

Little regard for the European leaders, who represent peoples that endured mass destruction for generations in the name of these hallucinations of power.

It was never a demonstration of hospitality.

But don’t take it for granted, my American friends. A man who despises his closest allies like that is the same man who despises every one of you who didn’t vote for him, who will never support him.

That you already know for sure. You don’t need someone from Ukraine to tell you that, absolutely not.

I only call your attention here for two reasons.

First, because I see my president in that photo. He was forced to endure this grotesque scene and I can’t even imagine what he was thinking, but in some way I was in that creepy room with him. He was representing me. His disgust is also my disgust.

While I could never have a tiny fraction of his courage or patience, ironically I am freer than him to say it openly:

Second, because you, my American friends, need to resist. Don’t ever let this absurdity be tolerated, be normalized.

One of their tactics is to win by exhaustion, by your exhaustion.

One day this man will go. But if you don’t resist the normalization of this circus, his absurdities won’t leave with him.

They will remain. They will become precedent.

They will be inherited by others, by heirs who wear his hats long after he is gone.

The biggest danger is not Trump, but his legacy of stripped dignity.

America will survive Trump.

But it cannot survive becoming him.

Alaska.

The Last Frontier, as your license plates say.

A land that lived in my dreams, so far, so isolated, known to me mostly by its storms, its wilderness, its bears.

A place that had the good fortune to escape Russia long ago.

A place where I never thought history would come knocking like this.

But yesterday, history came.

Without the beauty of your northern lights, but with the ugliness of two men who carry death in their shadows.

Trump and Putin.

On your soil.

But Alaska did not bow.

Ukraine saw your warmth, your character, your spirit.

People who live at the edge of the world, but know exactly what side of history they stand on.

Your flag in blue and yellow is not an accident. It mirrors the colors of Ukraine, and it is a reminder of the light and the sky that cannot be erased.

I almost confused that your nickname was the North Star State, but a quick search showed it already belonged to beautiful Minnesota.

The Last Frontier… absolutely!

At least for learning something new, that disaster of yesterday was worth it.

The only Russian flag I saw in Alaska was the one Trump put behind him, to ornament his shame with a dictator.

It was not yours. Never yours.

For decades, so many people called you a red state, but yesterday you showed the world your true colors.

You showed that even in a state once counted for Trump, the people themselves are not defined by a vote.

They are defined by dignity.

By courage.

By knowing freedom is not for sale, not for trade.

Not for spectacle.

To my friends in Alaska: You are the frontier of decency.

You are the frontier of honor.

And the world will remember it.
