We’ve lived in the same neighborhood since I was a kid, but I didn’t really know him at all. I’m not even sure that, since I moved back to San Diego as an adult, I’d ever bumped into him, let alone spoken to him. My relationship with Chris was that I used to carpool to school with his stepdaughter. That was it. That was the entire relationship. Had it not been for a stroke of luck and the power of play, our relationship would have never grown into something more.

But then, some years back, while watching a “high” level pickleball match over the holidays, our relationship changed.

Some context: I had been playing a lot of backgammon that year, and my dad always mentioned that his neighbor Chris was apparently a good player. But my dad thinks his friends are great at a lot of games and sports that they are, in fact, not.

One day over the holidays, he mentioned he was going to play pickleball with his best friend Mike against Chris’s stepson and nephew, and that I should come watch some “really high level play” - remember the poor talent assessment I mentioned. Convinced that watching would be entertaining not because of the talent but in spite of it, I decided to go check it out. When I arrived, there was one other person watching, an older guy that I didn’t really recognize. But I figured: who else would be spending their holiday watching this except Chris? I walked over and confirmed it. Then I said the only thing I actually knew about him.

“Heard you like to play backgammon.”

“Yes,” he said. “Do you?”

“Yeah.”

Then he asked me, “Want to play right now?”

“Yeah.”

We walked back to my house, grabbed a board, opened a bottle of wine, and played. He whooped me. Soundly. It wasn’t close. And by the end of it, he’d agreed to become my backgammon sensei.

That first game turned into a rhythm. We started rotating houses - during the day he’d come to mine and we’d play under the canopy of a palm tree in the yard; at night I’d go to his and we’d play at his living room table. He taught me the actual strategy of the game - the ideal opening moves, how to play a back game, how to use the doubling cube, even pointing out my mistakes as I made them. I was learning a ton. I was also losing a lot. We always played for just a little money to keep it interesting, and for the first year that meant Chris eagerly took my cash. Now, he’d always provide the wine, which cost more than the money we gambled, so I considered it a reasonable ROI on the time (whatever I’ve got to tell myself to not feel defeated.)

Eventually I started to improve, aka I started finding my groove. Every once in a while, the student would even become the teacher, if only for a brief but satisfying two-game run. The good news for me is that the gap is closing. The bad news is there’s still a definitive ability gap. Don’t tell Chris I said that.

We were having so much fun playing against each other, and pretty quickly backgammon stopped being the whole story. We started messing around with Russian variations of backgammon. Then chess. With made-up rules on made-up boards. Then we got into pickleball, and here it’s worth saying that I actually knew one other thing about Chris before I ever met him, because we happen to share a physical therapist, who used to tell me, unprompted, how impressed he was with how well Chris moved for his age. Turns out that was accurate. The guy is agile.

At some point my brother joined in. I taught him backgammon, but he decided he wanted to skip straight to the sensei’s sensei, so now the three of us play chouette-style - three-player backgammon - and it’s become one of my favorite ways to spend a Saturday afternoon. And the joy kept going. Our relationship, and the ways we played, continued growing from there.

Chris started coming to our Friendly Futures events, the beginning days of our social architecture office where we hosted “playdates for all ages” to R&D our craft. We would test out new games we designed and experiment with how to get adults to play and make new friends. Many of the attendees were in their 20s and 30s. Chris held it down for baby boomers. And specifically he really held it down at the Water Balloon Olympics - this guy was made for water balloon dodgeball. Maybe there’s a common thread between it and backgammon that I have yet to learn (probably a more advanced lesson than I’m ready for.)

And then there were the games we invented ourselves, usually out of whatever toys his grandkids had left lying around the house. I like the target games, or basketball hoops, or anything with objects to throw - they’ve suited me well. Nothing like an old-school cover, where the made-up game would serve as a final double-or-nothing event for the evening. It was a convenient way for me to make back the money I’d just lost to him at backgammon. LFG!

What the game was actually for

Somewhere in the middle of all this, without either of us deciding to, we became friends. We were busy spending time together playing, so it made it easy, almost effortless, to learn more about each other. And that exchange, especially with someone at a different point in life than me, has been incredibly meaningful and insightful.

Let’s start with the funny stuff: like how to break up with his girlfriend after high school, he just decided he’d move to France - a lot harder to communicate across continents back then. Or the first-hand anecdotes I’ve heard about the sixties - now that’s a wild decade! And of course, hearing him talk about playing his friends in backgammon, like how everyone knows his one buddy is particularly hesitant to accept the doubling cube - so feel free to bluff.

And then there’s the wisdom. Just this week he was telling me how rewarding it is to be a grandfather, and how much gratitude he has for the present moment at this stage of his life. Or the power of forgiveness, and the reminder that everyone is on their own journey. And maybe my favorite: the value he places on finding joy in the everyday, usually accentuated with a glass (or two) of wine. He’s not a bad business mentor either. All those conversations, a byproduct of playing a game, added up, and with them, a genuine friendship formed.

Chris knows my brother now. He’s spent real time with my friends, and I’ve spent real time with his. He invites me to his birthday parties; I invite him to mine. I’ve even watched Chargers games (those traitors!!) with him because it’s fun hanging out. We really became buddies.

And all of this is thanks to playing. We would never have otherwise spent time with each other had it not been for a silly twenty-inch-wide board with a bunch of triangles on it. But that board, and the rules and little rituals that came with it, turned out to be a powerful social hack. It gave us a built-in excuse to sit down together in the first place. And then it kept being the excuse - we’d start with backgammon and end up talking about everything else, or we’d wander off into some other game entirely. It was basically the scaffolding our whole friendship got built on.

Because friendships are ultimately a byproduct of proximity and repetition. But adult life just doesn’t hand you many built-in reasons for either anymore. That’s why I’m such an advocate for play. It didn’t just start our friendship. It also kept generating new ways for it to grow. A rectangle board with triangles was the reason two neighbors fifty years apart became friends - isn’t that wild?!

Chris and I are playing backgammon this afternoon. He will probably win.

That was never really the point.

I was in Nashville for work and had a quick 30 minutes for lunch before I needed to get to the airport. A quick Google search suggested a nearby restaurant called Monell’s, with a 4.8 star rating from over 7000 reviews. Plus, I hadn’t had any fried chicken on my visit, so I thought alright, let’s celebrate the end of the week with something yummy.

I started walking over, passing through a commercial corridor and into what felt like a residential street. There, a historic home with a plaque that said “circa 1880” was Monell’s, with that captivating sign. I was like huh, where am I?

So I walked inside and the host took me to a table with 8 other people already seated. I put my backpack on the seat between me and a random woman, trying to be polite and give her some space, but the host told me no, please sit immediately next to her. Again, I was like huh, where am I?

Next, this woman introduced herself to me, with a distinctly southern accent, and started passing me food. Fried okra, biscuits, stuff I had never heard of, and she was teaching me how to pair it together to make it as tasty as possible. Again, I was like huh, really now, where am I?

I learned the lady next to me was there with her mom and 3 daughters (shout out to 3 generations eating together), the folks at the end of the table were an amateur MMA fighter and his girlfriend celebrating her birthday, and then about 10 minutes later a family from San Diego coincidentally joined, and now the table was at 100% capacity.

What a serendipitous experience. All I wanted was some quick fried chicken before my flight home - a curious choice, I know - but instead I experienced a relic from a previous era where the idea of dining with strangers wasn’t strange at all. It was a true “family style” dining experience, except I was there with zero of my family members or friends. But we spent time together at the table with a not-so-different level of comfort as if they were my friends. Pretty cool.

Truthfully, the food was fine. But with full respect to 7000 reviewers, it wasn’t the fried chicken that made this place special. It was everything else. Most notably, it was the engineered intimacy, starting with sitting with strangers at the same table, sharing food, and filtering even into cultural touch points like no phones allowed. What made this place special was the human connection, because the culture was clear: come here to eat (pretty) good food, together.

Now, as I’m flying home, looking over the Mississippi River, I’m reflecting on my unique afternoon. And I have a few takeaways that Monell’s taught me on social isolation and human connection (and for another day - how people in Nashville complain too much about traffic, it’s not that bad, go to LA).

The first takeaway is I feel a little sad that this lunch felt so novel. Even I, someone who talks to strangers for a living, felt a weird flicker of discomfort when the host told me to scoot closer. Me! The guy who built a career around this stuff! That says a lot about how thoroughly we’ve engineered isolation into everyday life. Just think about the direction of the food industry: ghost kitchens. Uber Eats. Takeout eaten at home while watching Netflix. We optimized for convenience and accidentally engineered isolation. Now people are craving the opposite. We’re social animals who somehow are building too many places that make being social feel scary. And it took me a legitimate moment to shift into this alternative dining experience.

The second takeaway is how excited I felt that this restaurant, with its mediocre food, is so celebrated. Monell’s has been doing this for 30 years and they are absolutely crushing it. A line out the door on a random Friday at 2pm. People are starving for more authentic connection - literally and figuratively. And I don’t think that’s a coincidence. Digital fatigue is real. Loneliness is real. And people are getting fed up. You can see the response everywhere: community-focused real estate, hospitality brands built around belonging, citizen-led clubs, third place movements, nonprofits dedicated to social wellness. The longing is there and the world is catching up to it.

My third takeaway might be a little controversial (perhaps less so than my coastal palate saying their fried chicken was mid) and it’s that food is an amazing connector. Every culture has its own twists and turns, everyone eats, which makes it one of the few truly universal human experiences. Food is an incredible social technology because everyone understands it. But I still think play might be the most effortless connector we have.

Debby and I bonded over the food and her educating me on turnip greens and corn pudding, and it was fun. But conversation still required work. We were all confined to our seats. It was a little restrained. Had we had a game at the table on the other hand, it could have really loosened up the conversation and helped us learn more about each other and deepen our relationships. And on top of that, have more fun together!

So while I think play is ultimately the best connector, food is undeniably still fantastic, and wow was it serendipitous for me to stumble into this restaurant. The meal made me feel sad that we’ve abandoned so many forms of communal life over the past century. But experiences like this also make me optimistic. People are clearly hungry for connection again, which invigorates me to continue creating more opportunities to bring people together and get people playing with friends. But for right now, the thing I’m most stoked about is getting back to San Diego and having a fish burrito - I’m over fried chicken.

It starts at Rosehill Purveyors, my local coffee shop in Encinitas, CA. I walk in, order a cappuccino - the type of milk is always a game time decision - and Adam the owner consistently delivers my favorite coffee. Talia, my girlfriend, orders her favorite Matcha latte and deliberates intensely about getting a “sweet treat” before we inevitably get a gluten free muffin (it was a foregone conclusion from the start). Lily, our dog, introduces herself to every person she sees. She’s the real friendly inspiration :)

Right next to Rosehill is the Cardiff Rail Trail: a path running alongside a rail corridor through Cardiff and Encinitas. Wildflowers blooming, the Pacific glinting, and Mt. Soledad shimmering to the south - it’s a truly spectacular place to be. We step onto the trail, coffees in hand, Lily already pulling toward something fascinating in the bushes. Most of the time we’re surrounded by other people on a similar wavelength - couples walking dogs, families pushing strollers, surfers heading toward the beach, friends catching up on a slow morning stroll.

It’s one of the best community spaces around here.

But for all its beauty, something is missing and leaves me wanting more.

A Trail Full of Strangers

The trail is full of people, but wow it’s really not easy to make new friends there. People are just moving through, keeping to themselves or to whoever they came with. There’s almost no reason to stop, linger, or meet anyone. The few benches that exist feel like afterthoughts - on the west side of the trail, so they either face the trail with their back to the ocean (inexcusable) or face the ocean with their back to everyone walking by (scenic, but also odd).

The signage, the one place a trail gets to actually speak to its visitors, is a list of boring rules. No parking. Max speed 8 MPH. Do not block trail. The message, intentional or not: behave yourself and keep moving.

The funniest thing is that since the trail is relatively short, you’re almost guaranteed to see everyone twice. Not only are you likely returning to where you parked or live, but so is everyone else. You’d think this built-in second chance would make people more likely to connect. Apparently not. Saying hi feels bold. Eye contact is iffy. Sure, the super gregarious person who isn’t afraid of social rejection can make a new friend here (been there, done that) but for most people it never happens. Ever.

The Cardiff Rail Trail is a place I genuinely love. And it could be so much friendlier.

Beautiful ≠ Friendly

This gap - between a pleasant place and a friendly one - is far too common today.

It’s not unique to Cardiff. It’s so many trails, parks, or neighborhoods with gorgeous amenities and a quiet social emptiness underneath. We’ve gotten very good at designing beautiful outdoor spaces. But our social norms and lives are very different today than they used to be, and public space design hasn’t caught up. Most public spaces in 2026 just aren’t particularly friendly.

So we redesigned this one to try something new.

The Redesign

We pulled on three strategic levers to create a friendly infrastructure for the Cardiff Trail: new gathering spaces, new programming, and a new cultural layer that changes how people are encouraged to relate to each other.

The first intervention is a new community gathering node at the southern end, near Rosehill. We carved out a small destination space off the path - a place to stop, not just pass through. At its heart is a community rock garden, where hand-painted rocks double as both co-created art and game pieces. Mancala is laid into the ground, Hopscotch too. A backgammon table anchors one edge, and all of these use the rocks as the equipment for play.

The rocks belong to the garden and are pleasant to look at, but they’re also an invitation to contribute. Imagine neighbors painting rocks together, adding to the garden over time - each one a small piece of local art that also happens to be a functional game piece. The garden grows with the community. Friendly infrastructure, hiding in plain sight.

The second intervention is further north - a terraced stage and amphitheater that doubles as an outdoor fitness area. There’s a pull-up bar, parallel bars, fitness benches, and stall bars. And there is a place for small performances and collective gatherings. Crucially, the terraced area is east of the trail, so for the first time, people sitting here can both look at the beautiful Pacific Ocean AND interact with the people walking by. Talk about low hanging fruit!

The same space hosts two unique, local twists on bocce that you can only play here at the Cardiff Trail. It’s great for all ages, and even better with all ages - the kind of game where a seven-year-old and a seventy-year-old are genuinely equal competitors. We’d love to see a Cardiff Rail Trail Bocce League grow out of this, branded to Cardiff, owned by the community. Imagine knowing the names of the people you play with every Sunday morning despite the fact everyone is at completely different stages of life. This Cardiff Bocce could be a great connector!

The Cherry on Top: Rules That Create Belonging

Here’s the thing about rules: we usually think of them as constraints. Don’t do this. Stay out of there. Keep moving.

But rules can do something else entirely. The right rules - playful, specific, human - lower the activation energy for connection. They give strangers a shared context, a reason to engage, permission to be friendly without it feeling strange. Rules don’t just constrain a place. They create its culture.

So we redesigned the signage.

The existing Cardiff Rail Trail sign is a standard municipal rules board. Useful, probably necessary, and completely lifeless. Our version keeps the practical stuff, but adds a social layer in the form of a game.

“Make a friend today. If you see someone with a dog - ask what their dog would say if it could talk. Someone with a coffee - ask how many cups deep they are. Someone in yoga clothes - ask their favorite studio.”

Six triggers. Six conversation starters. Suddenly the trail isn’t just a place to walk - it’s a place to play. The rules don’t constrain the experience. They create it. This is what we mean when we say culture is a design problem. You can’t mandate friendliness. But you can design the conditions where it happens naturally.

Every Trail Can Feel Like This

The Cardiff Rail Trail is one trail. But there are thousands like it - from common neighborhood trails to the High Line - all over the country. Most of them are beautiful. Very few of them are particularly friendly.

That’s not a natural law. It’s a design choice. And it can be unmade.

The interventions we’ve designed here - gathering spaces, intergenerational programming, rules as invitations - are replicable anywhere. The specific games change. The signage adapts to local culture. But the principle holds: if you design for connection, connection happens.

And to the City of Encinitas, we’d love to talk. The Cardiff Rail Trail is your trail. These ideas are yours to pilot. Let’s make it the friendliest trail in California, and a model for every city that wants to follow.

Places We Love, Made Friendlier — Vol. 1

The Shot

Sammy set the perfect down screen, and as I came up the court Santana sent me a perfectly timed pass right in stride. Balanced, feet underneath, I put up a prayer. The ball left my hands and I knew. Clean release, money arc. Boom! GAME OVER.

Our team had just won a massive third place showdown in what most people would categorize as a very low-level, low-stakes community basketball tournament. Mostly 30-somethings, a couple of teenagers with their annoyingly springy knees, all of us packed into a gym on a Saturday morning. (I'll admit, I'm starting to feel like the old guy at these things. But I also get my butt kicked by plenty of people much older than me in plenty of sports and games, so honestly, maybe being that old guy is to my advantage. THIRD PLACE, LFG.)

It was a genuinely great morning. Good competition, good energy, one of those events that actually delivers on its promise of fun. I left happy.

Somewhere on the drive home it hit me: I’d met some new people, but I hadn’t made a single real new connection. I couldn’t tell you a thing about any of them, other than that one guy who calls fouls way too frequently. You know the type.

The organizer’s stated goal for the event was community building. I don’t doubt that for a second. I know the organizer and he’s a great person who is genuinely interested in bringing people together. Our world needs more people like him. But there’s a big difference between hosting an event because you care about community and designing an event that actually produces it.

The Tournament

The setup was straightforward: two side-by-side indoor courts, a bracket, and a cash prize for the winners. Teams were formed in advance and showed up ready to compete. There was good music, good energy, and surprisingly even a few spectators (this is a low-level community tournament, not the And1 Mixtape Tour).

On paper, and in practice, it was fun. The basketball was ~good. People cheered. There were moments of genuine excitement. Three hours flew by. If you asked anyone there to rate the event, I’d guess most would give it high marks.

But “fun” and “community-building” are not the same output. And this event, despite the organizer’s best intentions, was designed almost perfectly to produce the first and not the second.

The Gap Between Intent and Design

Here’s what I kept coming back to on the drive home: the organizer wasn’t wrong to use basketball as a vehicle for community. Ball is indeed life. And play is genuinely one of the most powerful tools we have for creating human connection. There’s research going back decades showing that shared physical activity breaks down social barriers faster than almost any other intervention. The instinct was right.

The problem wasn’t values. It was design. The event was structured in ways that, however unintentionally, actively worked against the goal of connection. And once I started breaking it down, the three failure points were pretty clear.

Design Failure #1: The Space Scattered People

The two courts were set up side by side, which was fine for the games themselves. But the surrounding space, the large perimeter where people went between games, had no intentional structure. No focal point. No reason to congregate in one place.

So people distributed themselves away from the people they didn’t know: teams clustered in their own corners, friends sat together along separate walls, strangers kept a comfortable buffer from other strangers. The space, which could have been a zone for mixing, became a zone for self-segregation. Not because anyone was unfriendly. Just because the space gave them no reason to be together.

Space design matters enormously for social behavior. Where you put the water, the shade, the food, the seating, these aren’t logistical decisions, they’re social decisions. The layout of a space is a silent set of instructions for how people should relate to each other.

Design Failure #2: The Program Had No Connective Tissue

Even with the right activity, people still need a framework that gives them permission and opportunity to engage each other. The program here didn’t provide that. The time before the tournament, the breaks during it, and the time after it were all missed opportunities for connection.

There wasn’t a light intro moment for people to get originally acquainted. The breaks between games were short, just long enough to catch your breath, not long enough to start a real conversation with someone you didn’t already know. And when the final game ended, the event ended. No celebration. No collective moment to close the loop. People just drifted to their cars.

New friendships need time and a reason. The program gave people neither. The schedule was optimized for basketball efficiency, not for the slower, messier work of human connection.

Design Failure #3: Incentives Rewarded Competition, Not Connection

This one runs deepest. There was a cash prize. Teams signed up together, which meant everyone already had their in-group before the event started. The entire structure of the tournament, the bracket, the prize, the pre-formed teams, framed every other player as an opponent to beat, not a new friend to meet.

Competition isn’t inherently bad for community building. Shared competition can actually create strong bonds, and, is super duper fun! But when winning is the primary incentive and teams are self-selected, people’s energy goes inward to their group rather than outward to the broader gathering. The social gravity of the event pulled people together within their existing circles and kept them apart from everyone else.

Culture is the hardest design lever to pull because it’s invisible. But it’s also the most powerful. The narrative of an event, what it’s for, what success looks like, what’s being rewarded, shapes behavior just like the physical setup or program elements.

A Design Problem Has a Design Solution

None of this is a critique of the organizer’s intentions. This is the point I want to sit with for a moment, because it matters: the failure here wasn’t a values failure. The organizer cared about community. That care was real.

But caring about community and knowing how to design for it are two different things. Community doesn’t just happen because people are in the same place doing the same activity. It has to be structured. Invited. Made easy. The good news is that if it’s a design problem, it has design solutions. Here’s how I’d rebuild the same tournament with community as the actual north star.

Fix #1: Create a Center of Gravity

Instead of letting people distribute themselves across the perimeter, design one central rest station that everyone has a reason to use. Put the water cooler there. Put the snacks there. Make it the only place to refuel.

Here’s an addition that might sound small but is actually significant: have everyone drop their phone in a shared basket at that central station. Not as a rule for its own sake, but because phones are the enemy of incidental conversation. When your hands are free and your attention isn’t being pulled to a screen, you look around. You make eye contact. You say something. The phone basket creates the conditions for spontaneous interaction that the open perimeter couldn’t.

The design principle here is simple: you can’t make people talk to each other, but you can put them in the same place and make it the most likely outcome.

Fix #2: Build Connective Tissue Into the Schedule

Start with a collective warm-up. Not a lecture, not an icebreaker in the cringe sense, just a shared physical ritual that says: we are a group now, not just individuals who showed up at the same place. Five minutes of something everyone does together signals that this gathering has a shared identity. Always a fan of a classic rock paper scissors tournament. (Still waiting for my moment to win one.)

Extend the breaks between games. Give people fifteen minutes instead of five. Conversation needs time to breathe, the kind of time where you get past “good game” and into something real.

Keep eliminated players engaged with a twist on the bracket: when a team loses, its players join the winning team going forward. This keeps everyone in the game longer, creates forced mixing across teams, and gives people a new “in-group” to identify with as the day progresses. It also turns a loss from a reason to disengage into a reason to keep playing.

End with a real celebration. Not just a trophy handoff and an awkward dispersal. A closing moment that the whole group experiences together. A shared meal, a post-game gathering, something with enough time and energy that the friendships that started forming during the day have a chance to cement.

Fix #3: Redesign the Incentives

This is the hardest fix and the most important one. The goal is to change the narrative of the event from “beat your opponents” to “meet your neighbors.”

One structural way to do it: run the first half of the tournament with the teams people signed up with, and the second half with teams that are randomly reshuffled. This accomplishes something that all the icebreaker exercises in the world can’t. It removes the social burden of having to introduce yourself to a stranger. Instead, you walk up and say “hey, I think we’re on the same team now” and suddenly you have a reason to talk, a shared mission, and a legitimate starting point.

The real insight here is about the hardest part of forming any new relationship: the leap from complete stranger to someone you actually know. That gap, that moment where you have to manufacture a reason to talk to someone you’ve never met, is where most potential friendships die before they ever have a chance to start. The social tension is just high enough that most people don’t bother. But with design, you can remove that barrier entirely. Put two people on the same team and suddenly they have a shared mission, a reason to strategize, a legitimate excuse to say “hey, I’m Ryan, what’s your name.” The introduction writes itself.

Let me be clear: competition can absolutely stay. I still want all the smoke. I’m not here to turn a basketball tournament into a trust fall exercise. But let’s make it friendly competition, the kind where you go hard during the game and then dap up your opponent after it. The kind where, at the end of the day, you’re grateful you have a community to gather with at all. Change what gets celebrated and you subtly shift what people’s energy goes toward.

Community Events Need to Be Designed to Create Community

I still had a great time at the event. And I’m still stoked I had the game-winning shot to secure third place for my boys and bring me one step closer to achieving my NBA dream. But I wish I’d made more friends that day. And it’s a powerful illustration of how proximity doesn’t mean community.

A crowded elevator is full of proximity. So is an airport terminal. Neither one guarantees connection. What creates connection is intention, the deliberate design of space, program, and culture toward a specific human outcome.

The tournament wanted to be a community event, and credit to the organizer for caring enough to try. With a few thoughtful changes, it could have created much more community. We don’t have to hope people randomly become friends. We can design for it. And specifically, we can design play in particular ways to be perhaps the most powerful way to bring people together. When we do, my game winner will feel just as good, and this time I’ll know the names of the people I start talking smack to. Excited for the next community basketball tournament!

It’s a nice place for kids to play, to experience joy, to run around with friends, and to learn how to be with other people. We don’t debate whether playgrounds are necessary. We just build them. Cities, schools, and neighborhoods invest in them because we understand something intuitively: play is good for kids, and playing together helps kids thrive.

Then something strange happens.

As we grow up, play quietly fades from everyday life. Right around the time making friends becomes harder, play becomes harder to find. And I wish it were just the most frustrating game of hide-and-seek. The sad truth is that we decided to not take play seriously for adults, and as a result we rarely design neighborhoods that make it easy for adults to play with friends.

This is the playground paradox. We intentionally design places for kids to play because we know play helps them socialize and thrive. But just as connection becomes more difficult in adulthood, we largely stop designing for play altogether, and it’s time to start asking why.

The consequences of that decision are showing up everywhere, overlooking financial value, health, wellness, and joy hiding in plain sight. It’s as if the real work now is a new game of hide-and-seek: noticing the playful wellness potential all around us, and finally bringing it into the light.

Playgrounds work because they materialize a shared value in the built environment. They don’t just support physical movement; they support social life for kids. They make joy visible and acceptable. They normalize interacting with strangers. They lower social friction by design. No invitation is required. No skill threshold needs to be met. You don’t need to explain why you’re there.

Playgrounds are some of our most successful informal third spaces. They create low-pressure environments where kids can make friends naturally and caregivers can coexist in the background. Despite the rise of screens, parents instinctively know that digital interaction can’t replace real, embodied social play. We build playgrounds because we understand that learning how to get along with others happens in shared physical space.

In other words, playgrounds aren’t frivolous. They are powerful tools for nurturing joy and social health. And we treat them as essential civic infrastructure.

So what happens when we grow up?

Adult play doesn’t disappear entirely, but it becomes much harder to stumble into and, over time, less social and less fun. We still have fitness classes and hobbies. We can go for runs, sign up for art classes, or join leagues - I love my Wednesday night basketball games. But most of these options ask a lot of us, and in the process often strip away the lightness that makes play feel like play.

They require planning. They require commitment. They often require skill or fitting into a specific age group. As a result, many communities offer very few casual, nearby, low-barrier ways for adults to play together.

When play becomes inconvenient, it quietly drops out of everyday life. Socializing then shifts toward unhealthy habits or digital “hang outs,” and we’re left wondering why so many people feel unhappy and disconnected.

The strange leap is this: we clearly understand the social and emotional value of play for kids, yet we largely abandon that same logic for adults.

That abandonment matters, because adults desperately need play too. And the data now makes that impossible to ignore.

We are living through a widely acknowledged loneliness epidemic. Ironically, long-term research, including the Harvard Study of Adult Development, shows that strong relationships are the single most important factor in long-term health and happiness. Not income. Not status. Not productivity. Relationships.

Yet, modern wellness culture has become obsessed with optimizing the individual. Tech companies invite us to track steps, monitor sleep, and count calories - valuable, but insufficient. Social health, the thing that research consistently shows matters most, is often treated as secondary or assumed to take care of itself.

Play is one of the most natural, proven ways to strengthen relationships. And yet we perceive play as if it’s something you age out of, at the exact moment connection becomes hardest. This isn’t just unfortunate. It has real consequences for our mental, physical, and collective health.

The built environment plays a larger role in this than we often admit.

Cities don’t just reflect culture; they shape behavior. They tell us, subtly but constantly, what is normal and what is not. For most adults, our environments do not suggest that playing together is part of everyday life. With a few exceptions, we don’t build places that invite it.

There are signs of change. Pickleball courts have exploded in popularity, not because the game is perfect, but because it offers a low-barrier, social way to play together (side note - happy to accept any challengers). Playful public art and placemaking projects are starting to introduce joy and interaction into shared spaces. Offices and apartment buildings are experimenting with rooftop courts, game rooms, and communal amenities that are ~playful.

These are important signals. But we are still in the early stages of understanding how powerful shared play can be as social infrastructure, and how intentionally it can be designed to bring people together.

If we want adults to play more, we have to build places that make play feel easy, normal, and inviting.

There is also a broader opportunity hiding in plain sight.

Our demographics are shifting. Populations are aging, and people are living longer. At the same time, birth rates are declining. We need environments that support older adults with purpose, joy, and connection, while also creating welcoming places for families and children.

Play is one of the few activities that naturally bridges generations. It creates shared experiences across age, ability, and background. The most powerful play isn’t age-specific. It’s shared. Ask my 75 year old neighbor (and backgammon sensei) Chris - he became one of my best buddies because we regularly play together. There is a growing need to create moments where older and younger people can connect, and thoughtfully designed playful interactions are one of the most promising ways to do that.

Playgrounds are great. They do exactly what we ask them to do. The paradox is that they create precisely the kind of joy, connection, and social health we need more of as adults, yet we’ve treated those benefits as something we grow out of.

Play is one of the most underutilized drivers of wellness we have. It sits at the intersection of health, social connection, and the built environment, with enormous potential hiding in plain sight. Pickleball doesn’t need to be the only option where I can play with my grandma, and playgrounds don’t have to be the default place where we design for play.

We can imagine new kinds of third spaces, powered by play, that make IRL connection feel easy and natural across generations. We already know how powerful play can be. The real question is whether we’re willing to take it seriously beyond childhood.

A simple basketball court in the middle of a city can become a meeting ground for strangers, just like a soccer ball in a public plaza can turn passersby into teammates. Play isn’t just about competition - it’s a medium for connection.

Over the years, I’ve had the chance to document and experience unique play spaces around the world. I’ve also met incredible people along the way. Here’s what I’ve learned.

Play Creates Instant Social Connection

I’ve seen it happen firsthand - people who have never met before become teammates in minutes through a shared game.

In Vilnius, Lithuania, I met a lawyer named J while playing pickup basketball on a bright-orange-hooped court in the middle of the city. I played the best game of my life. J now refers to my brother and me as “San Diego’s Steph Curry.” Unfortunately, I played so well that now I’m hesitant to go back - I don’t want to disappoint J when my shooting inevitably returns to earth. But hey, still made a friend and had a fun time!

In Nicoya, Costa Rica after our flight was rerouted, we found ourselves at a tiny airstrip with a basketball court across the street. My brother, a friend, and I jumped into a game with local teenagers. Before long, a full crowd had gathered to watch - just because we decided to play. It was an awesome cultural exchange. I loved the art on the court, and the teenagers loved picking on my defensive limitations. Didn’t quite get the same result as in Lithuania, but I’d gladly go back and challenge them again!

In Jaipur, India, a slackline in a park became an unexpected social hub. I set it up just for fun, but before long, strangers were coming over to try it out, talk, and laugh together. What started as a casual activity turned into a moment of connection among people who might never have spoken otherwise.

Each of these moments started with a simple game, but they led to conversations, friendships, and new perspectives.

Sports Courts Are Great, But They’re Not Enough

Public sports spaces, like basketball courts, soccer fields, and skate parks, are amazing for those who play those sports and can yield incredible social benefits. But what about everyone else?

• Not everyone plays sports. Traditional courts serve a specific group, but many people don’t feel confident joining in.

• Sports can be age- and ability-segregated. Most pickup games happen between people with similar skill levels, leaving out younger kids, older adults, and those with different physical abilities.

• Competition isn’t for everyone. Some people just want to play for fun, socialize, or be creative, without the pressure of winning or losing.

This is where neighborhood games complement sports courts. They don’t replace them - but they fill in the gaps and provide opportunities for:

• People of all ages and abilities to play together

• Casual, low-pressure interaction without the need for experience or skill

• New kinds of games that invite social connection, not just competition

We need to expand play beyond traditional sports so that everyone has a way to engage.

Expanding Play Beyond Traditional Sports

Seeing how organic yet structured play can create social bonds made me realize:

• What if we designed public games that weren’t tied to skill or athleticism?

• What if we created spaces where a 10-year-old, a 40-year-old, and a 70-year-old could all play together?

• What if play wasn’t just an afterthought, but a core part of how we design public space?

Neighborhood games build on these ideas, creating spaces that invite structured yet open-ended play - where people have a reason to engage but can interact in their own way.

Because the best public spaces aren’t just beautiful. They give people a reason to talk, laugh, and connect.

But in the middle of it all, there was a small basketball court.

One day, I found myself on that court playing a game of horse with one of my young patients. In that moment, the hospital disappeared. He wasn’t just a patient, and I wasn’t just a doctor, we were simply two people enjoying a game. The energy shifted. He smiled, I smiled. The walls of the hospital didn’t feel so rigid anymore.

This short game of basketball stuck with me, not just because it was fun, but because it fundamentally changed how I thought about play, trust, and connection.

Play Builds Trust in a Way Words Can’t

In medicine, trust between a doctor and patient is essential. But trust isn’t built just through explanations and reassurances, it’s built through shared experiences.

• That basketball game gave us a new way to connect. Instead of just being the doctor who checked his vitals, I became someone who laughed, played, and competed alongside him.

• Play can level the playing field. No white coat, no patient gown, just two people enjoying a moment together.

That trust carried over into his care. When it was time for his next treatment, I noticed he was more at ease. He knew I wasn’t just there to administer medication, I was someone who saw him beyond his diagnosis.

Play Resonates Across Generations

In that moment, our age difference didn’t matter.

• A shared game allowed us to connect in a way that transcended life stages, backgrounds, and experiences.

• The same simple act of shooting a basketball was just as meaningful to him as it was to me.

• The best public games invite different generations to play together, because shared joy isn’t age-restricted.

More Places Need a Spirit of Play

That basketball court was a rare bright spot in a hospital setting. It made me realize:

• So many spaces could benefit from play, yet so few are designed to include it.

• Public spaces, workplaces, schools, and even hospitals should embrace play as a way to build connection, trust, and joy.

• Play isn’t a luxury, it’s a fundamental part of human interaction.

Why This Inspired Me to Design Neighborhood Games

That experience shaped how I think about play as a tool for connection.

Now, my work in designing neighborhood games is driven by the same realization I had on that hospital court:

• Play should be accessible to all ages. It’s not just for kids, it’s for everyone.

• Play sparks joy in unexpected places. Whether in a hospital, a plaza, or a public square, a game can transform the feel of a space.

• Play builds trust and community. Shared experiences create deeper relationships, whether between doctors and patients, neighbors, or strangers in a park.

So many places fail to embrace the spirit of play. Let’s change that.

Here’s the key: While every playful intervention adds value, the more intentional and ambitious you are, the greater the placemaking impact.

1. Start Small - Host a Game Night (Do This Today!)

Sometimes, the fastest way to activate a space is just to show people how to use it in a playful way.

• Host a public game night (or morning!) Bring out chess, backgammon, cornhole, or giant Jenga - something simple and social.

• Facilitate friendly competition. Organize a community trivia night, a pop-up table tennis tournament, or even a silly relay race.

• Make it easy for people to join. No one wants to crash a game if they don’t know the rules - set up a playful sign saying, “New players welcome!”

Why It Works: Play is contagious. Once people see others engaging in a space, they’re more likely to return and play themselves.

2. Low-Lift Design Tweaks - Invite Play With Minimal Effort

You don’t need a full redesign to make a space more playful - small interventions can create big impact.

• Paint a game directly onto pavement. Hopscotch, four-square, maze patterns - anything that invites movement.

• Swap boring benches for playful seating. Hammocks, porch swings, or clustered seating can invite more social interaction than standard benches.

• Add a simple public play tool. Install a ping-pong table, a community chess board, or a slackline - something that makes people pause and engage.

Why It Works: Low-cost, simple tweaks can quickly invite opportunities to play or used as a tool to discover what kinds of play resonate with your community.

3. Mid-Term Activation - Encourage Play Over Time

If you’re ready to go beyond one-off interventions, start creating consistent opportunities for play.

• Create a pop-up play zone. A small, dedicated space with movable play elements (giant blocks, open-ended art materials, or balance beams).

• Rotate play-focused public art. Install interactive sculptures that change over time, so people keep coming back.

• Turn an underused space into a seasonal play hub. A plaza, empty storefront, or even a parking lot can become a temporary social playground.

Why It Works: The more consistently people see play happening in a space, the more they begin to expect it.

4. Permanent Integration - Design Play Into Everyday Life

To truly embed play into public space, it needs to be designed into the fabric of a place.

• Playful wayfinding. Replace dull signs with interactive, humorous, or movement-based elements.

• Blended play + utility. A stairway that doubles as a mini racetrack, a bus stop that invites swinging, or a pedestrian path with built-in challenges.

• Multifunctional gathering spots. Plazas that incorporate built-in games, seating, and open-ended play elements as part of the landscape.

Why It Works: These elements aren’t just about fun; they create destinations where people want to gather, linger, and connect.

5. Next-Level Play - Neighborhood Games That Define a Place

While all the previous steps help nudge people toward play, the most powerful interventions are those that create an entirely new way to engage with public space.

• Neighborhood games are large-scale, site-specific experiences custom-designed for a place.

• They give people a reason to interact. Unlike passive seating or vague “playful” spaces, these games actively bring people together.

• They turn play into a cultural anchor. A well-designed game doesn’t just entertain, it becomes part of a place’s identity.

Example: IndiGolf is a neighborhood game that blends strategy, movement, and social interaction, creating a truly unique gathering space.

Why It Works: Unlike temporary activations, neighborhood games define a place long-term, giving communities a shared, multigenerational experience that lasts.

Putting It All Together - Your Playful Public Space Roadmap

When I look at my week, so many of my best social interactions happen through play. Whether it’s a structured game, a spontaneous competition, or a shared creative activity, play is essential to how I connect with people.

Here’s a snapshot of some of the play in my life:

🏓 Ping pong battles with my dad, brother, and uncle. For two decades, we’ve argued over who’s best (it’s me), and every game fuels at least three more dinner-table debates.

🐕 Fetch and tag at the park. My mom, our dog Lily, and a rotating cast of neighborhood pups and their owners meet up every morning. My favorite part? When my mom and I are sprinting for our lives, trying to dodge Lily mid-zoomies.

🛹 Skateboarding in parking lots with my girlfriend. We both suck, but hyping each other up (and laughing at slow-motion wipeouts) makes it so much fun.

🎲 Backgammon with my 74-year-old neighbor Chris. He’s my backgammon mentor, and after years of getting destroyed, I think the student might finally be surpassing the teacher. Tonight’s the night.

🏀 Wednesday night hoops. A bunch of 30-somethings still trying to prove we got it. And we do. Particularly me, I still think I’m heading to the NBA. But the ritual of competing, laughing, and running it back week after week is priceless.

🏆 Cornhole, sprints, and slacklining with two 14-year-olds. My brother and I teach middle school fitness on Wednesdays before we hoop, and competition instead of drills makes it fun for all of us. Letting them win isn’t an option, but every once in a while they find a way.

🥒 Pickleball with everyone. It’s what all the cool kids are doing. I’m low-key dominant; my buddy Justin can’t ever beat me and I love it.

🎨 Ceramic date nights. A different kind of play, getting messy, experimenting, and creating something together.

🌊 Surfing at my local break. It’s technically a solo activity, but morning lineups are one of the best ways to build friendships.

🎉 Community events where the Friendly Futures team tests out our new games. Nothing beats seeing people light up when they discover a new game and start playing together. Although I keep losing the games I design (which is certainly not my intention) I’m optimistic that’ll change and try to comfort myself by saying at least we are encouraging people to play. And it kinda works; but Yoshi’s team’s win streak is coming to an end very soon I assure you.

Play Is How I Stay Connected

When I think about the relationships I value most, so many of them have been strengthened through play.

✔ It keeps friendships fresh. Instead of just grabbing dinner or catching up over drinks, play creates shared experiences that make time together more dynamic.
✔ It bridges generations. My neighbor is 74. The kids we challenge to cornhole are 14. Play makes age irrelevant.
✔ It creates new relationships. Some of my best friendships started through recurring games, pickup sports, or casual competitions.

This isn’t just me - it’s human nature. Play lowers social barriers, sparks joy, and brings people together in ways other interactions don’t.

Unfortunately, many of us have been tricked into thinking play is immature or irrelevant to our individual and collective well-being. I feel incredibly lucky that my family has always valued play, so for me, playing with people across generations has always felt normal, and I want to bring that joy to more people.

Why Neighborhood Games Matter

Even though there are already so many ways to play, our shared spaces are still missing something.

❌ Most play is age-segregated. It’s rare to find games that naturally bring kids, parents, and grandparents together.
❌ Adults don’t have enough playful spaces. Unless you’re in a sports league or a structured activity, there’s little in public spaces that truly invites play.
❌ Place matters. Universal games are awesome, but there is something meaningful about a game that belongs to a place to inspire community belonging and membership: call it home court advantage.

This is exactly why I do what I do.

We need more public games that are:
✔ Designed for all ages
✔ Social-first
✔ Integrated into everyday places

Neighborhood games fill the gaps, bringing more opportunities for spontaneous, multigenerational, and joyful play to our shared spaces. I feel incredibly grateful to be pioneering this approach to placemaking, and I’m so excited to bring more of this joy to more people and communities.

But now, it’s time to turn insight into action.

So What’s the Solution?

Public spaces should be:

That’s why we design neighborhood games - play installations that help people naturally interact, meet, and build relationships.

Most of the time, we exist near strangers rather than engage with them.

🤝 We sit next to someone on a bench, but never talk.
☕ We order coffee from the same cafe, but never acknowledge each other.
🚲 We pass the same neighbors every morning, but never introduce ourselves.

The Missing Ingredient? Serendipity.

Serendipity is the magic of unexpected encounters.

It’s the reason two strangers strike up a conversation at a park.
It’s what makes a casual passerby stop and join an impromptu game.
It’s how friendships, ideas, and community ties begin.

The Problem with Most Public Spaces

• Sidewalks, plazas, and parks are built for passing through, not for lingering and engaging.

• A sculpture or fountain looks nice but doesn’t invite participation.
