As I write, the only sounds I hear are cars passing by outside and the whirr of my AC switching off. It is the last few weeks of summer, and my husband has taken my son to play outside, so that I may have an hour of dedicated time to write.

When I have moments like this to myself, I always begin with the same question: what feels alive? What’s tap-tap-tapping at my internal closet of curio and wonder? Much as it always is, today the answer is fragrance.

I’ve long been a lover of scent and the way it can alchemize mind, body, and mood. With its ever-growing popularity—which sounds bizarre to write, like “toast being chic”—I’ve begun to look at my stockpiles of perfumes a bit differently. My collection has grown considerably. Some bottles feel like an extension of my DNA; others fall a bit flat. But that’s the thing about fragrance, isn’t it? It has body and texture; there are dimensions nestled within a single bottle. The poetry of fragrance is that you get to decide which elixirs you feel in your bones; the ones you wear like a distinct color in your aura.

Lately, I’m less interested in what smells “good” and more fascinated in what a fragrance can do. I used to choose a scent of the day predominantly based on smell—straightforward and not altogether wrong. But lately, I’ve been asking more of my bottles.

Like a dance with your partner or a conversation with your psyche, now before reaching for a particular bottle, I first pose a different question altogether: How do I want to feel today?

I’ve started thinking of fragrance less as something you spray and more as a sort of invocation: a way of calling something deeper forth.

Perhaps I want to feel closer to the version of myself who lives in the home of my dreams (a pursuit we are actively working toward). So I consider: what does she wear? Can I borrow notes from that fantasy to ground into my reality, here and now? Does scent have the power to bridge timelines in that way? I certainly believe it does.

Or perhaps I want more clarity and discernment throughout my day. What notes elicit such sentiments? What compositions play out like a clearing of the fog? Of course, clarity and discernment can be found in plenty of other places. Maybe for you it’s a religious or spiritual practice, time spent in solitude, a walk outside, a page in your journal. But why not look to a place that’s sometimes overlooked—a place like scent—to deepen your practice even further?

These are the questions living within me as I write in my free hour of silence; the ones that beg for enough attention to sprout somewhere beyond my own mind.

So today, I share with you four fragrances I’ve been reaching for when I want to feel something. They are deeply specific to me. Xinú’s Aguamadera
For when I want to feel: Small in the face of exploration and wonder

At times, feeling something within fragrance is an act of memory. Scent has the power to transport us places, to collapse the space between here and somewhere else. With Aguamadera, I am engulfed once again by the hot concrete of Mexico City, stepping onto lush private terraces with workshops of fragrant wonder tucked just beyond patio doors. This is what it’s like to visit Xinú. My husband and I got engaged in Mexico City, and because of that, this fragrance will, in part, forever remind me of the desert plants, vibrant rooftops, and intoxicating contrasts of this rich and historic place.

I wear Aguamadera when I want to feel steeped in something bigger than myself—the brilliance of a culture beyond my own, the thrill of adventuring within the walls of a far-off place. There is an unmistakable green quality to the fragrance, but it’s met with a breathy lightness: the whoosh of brisk air breaking through the heat as a taxi rushes by. It’s elemental, like stone, but layered with the same dry woods and verdant unfolding I imagine from a place so magically abigarrada like Mexico City.

All of Xinú’s fragrances are special, and very unique to the country from which they were born, but Aguamadera was my first introduction to the house. And because scent and memory have a particular way of entwining themselves, it will forever hold a special place within my heart.

Frédéric Malle’s Musc Ravageur
For when I want to feel: Close to my own humanness and sexuality

I like to publicly proclaim that I am not typically a gourmand girl, and yet, Musc Ravageur is always the exception. For me, so many of Frédéric Malle’s fragrances feel baroque, haunting in a way that only master perfumers with deep reverence for the craft could create.

I almost always wear this fragrance at night, when I want to feel as though I’m slinking throughout the halls of some grand place by candlelight. It’s sultry in a way my husband always notices. There is a fierce dance of tension within its composition, which is perhaps why it always seems to awaken something deep and primal in me. I notice the spice immediately, likely the cinnamon and clove, but as it settles, an undeniable warmth is also present.

To me, Musc Ravageur is the enigma and allure of initial attraction—meeting someone’s eye across the room, the palpable chemistry draped in the air, all the fantasies you conjure about what could be—and everything unfolding in a moment’s notice. As you wear it, what remains is a skin-like glow of having experienced that charge, even if only in a flash.

Musc Ravageur is sexy, there is no way around it. I feel it almost instantaneously as I spray it. But more than sex itself, it smells like the delectable tension of possibility—the moment before anything has happened, and everything still could. And for that reason alone, it has earned its spot in this list.

Grandiflora’s Saskia
For when I want to feel: Anchored in all that it requires to build a beautiful life
Floral - Green - Aquatic

I can viscerally feel the warmth radiating from this fragrance. It’s hot in a way that really does smell like being inside a greenhouse—humid, verdant, pulsating. I feel there is a specific point it is trying to make: beautiful things need warmth to grow.

It reminds me that where there are flowers, there are also many hands that have tended the soil; bugs that have pollinated the air; moisture and heat. All these conditions may not look particularly beautiful on paper, but are exactly what is required for worthwhile things to bloom.

Saskia helps me feel present in my reality, even when that reality hard. It reminds me of warm, beautiful, natural things, and that so often, their beauty exists not in spite of what is sticky, difficult, or hard to swallow, but because they were given such conditions to grow through it.

Vyrao’s The Sixth
For when I want to feel: Connected to the quieter parts of myself

Vyrao is a fragrance house already doing the work we are circling today, for it lives at the intersection of scent and that which you cannot see. I have long been a fan of this house for that reason alone, but to me, The Sixth feels like a beautiful introduction as you can layer it with anything else in the range, as well as anything already living in your collection.

Vyrao describes The Sixth as a fragrance designed to amplify positivity, balance the nervous system, and dispel negativity, but the herbs within its composition feel more sacred. I reach for it when I want to invite grounding and clarity in my day.

The Sixth feels meditative, like an all-knowing guide accompanying you through some sacred journey. It’s otherworldly in the sense that it doesn’t smell quite like anything you’ve encountered before. It’s ethereal, atmospheric, almost illuminating. There is a beautiful balance between the ritualistic smoke and resin and the zing of citrus and fruit, but it’s as if you notice the relationship between them only if you’e still enough to look for it. I like to think that’s how most journeys inward begin.

I reach for The Sixth as a compliment to almost anything else in my fragrance wardrobe because, much like the unique and universal dance between its ingredients, it reminds me to look again…to get quiet enough to hear the whisper of my own True North.

Some ideas push forth like a geyser from the bent hose of your mind; others emerge only after months of unrelenting silence.

I spent the better part of a year fantasizing about how to reemerge in this space, or if I even could. It’s been over 14 months since my last newsletter, and much of that time has been spent trying to piece together who I am now. Perhaps that is the question we spend our entire lives spiraling toward—the answer changing a bit each time we go in.

Ever since I was a little girl, I have dreamed of what I would offer the world. It’s why this newsletter is called Light House in the first place. What do I cast into the darkness? What signal of my own stretches toward those with eyes to see?

Since our last correspondence, I have become a mother, perhaps the title I hold with deepest reverence. I’ve witnessed my body stretch, soften, and reshape, and discovered that the grace we offer ourselves grows in direct proportion to our willingness to surrender. I create from a deeper place. I won’t pretend the harsh critique of a faceless handle online no longer stings, but I care less. My life is fuller, messier, and exponentially more tender. I love it more than ever.

One of the unexpected threads in my work that people are connecting to lately has been my journaling ecosystem. It’s a trend, but I don’t believe journaling is the point. I like to think we’re all craving something much more sacred: a way to notice, capture, and preserve.

Paying attention—to patterns, dreams, symbols, subtle shifts in people—has always been how I make sense of myself and the world. And the more I reflect on why this type of content resonates with people, the more I think it’s because an ecosystem is a vessel for preserving not only life, but your relationship to it. It’s proof that your inner world and the things that move you deserve an archive. We’re all aching for a place to gather the moments, ideas, and objects that shape who we are. It's why we write novels, paint canvases, frame photographs, press flowers, and tell stories around a dinner table. We are forever trying to hand life back to itself.

And the truly remarkable thing? You can build an ecosystem around anything. I notice through scent and donated items on thrift store shelves. Through incense and an expensive box of colored pencils. Through dreams scribbled before the sun comes up and the well of perfume samples at my bedside. I notice by kissing the tops of my son’s toes. He knows he matters by the way I whisper, “Yes, baby?” even if there is no question attached. Our lives become richer through what we repeatedly recognize, tending to those things with such attention until that awareness becomes care.

I don’t think I quite realized, but all this time, I have been practicing this act of noticing, capturing, and preserving before I even had language for what to call it. Below I am listing some of what makes up my current ecosystem—journaling, film photography, and beyond. I share what supports my practice, not to persuade you to buy what I own, but in the hope it might spark something new within you.

Capture: “How do I make sure beautiful things won’t disappear?”

This is where I gather what I don't want to lose—thoughts before they flee, dreams before they’re lost to the routine of the day, ordinary moments before they become memory. It’s a reminder that if something beautiful finds you, there can always be a place for it to be held.

On the Page

• Palisky Leather Journal Covers: I, like many individuals, went back and forth between a Louise Carmen and a Paper Republic leather journal cover. In the end, I couldn’t justify the price of the LC, so I went with a small, woman-owned business that offered the same customization options as Louise Carmen for a fraction of the cost. Both the black and the blue (shade: lagoon) are from her, and I love them so much.

• Midori Lined Notebook: This is where most of my mornings begin. I prefer the MD notebooks for their luxurious paper feel. They also lay flat, which is a big plus when journaling. I use these for my morning pages (adopted from The Artist’s Way years ago).

• Hobonichi Cousin: A new-to-me Japanese planner I love because it uses Tomoe River Paper (cult-following paper that is thin, but compatible with fountain pens) and is sectioned into yearly, monthly, weekly, and daily spreads. I have been using it for tracking my habits, spotlighting highlights of the day, earmarking good days alongside hard ones, organizing my day-to-day schedule, and memory keeping. I’m happy to do a more in-depth view on how I use it, but you can find many (better) resources online.

• Stalogy A5 Notebook: This is where I keep my yearly birthday aura photographs I started about five years ago with Tertiary Sight. It’s become a tradition that is very special to me.

• Moleskine Classic Hard Cover Notebook: I love using this as a loose carry-all for content ideas and more. The red color reminds me of a dream symbol of mine I reference often called “The Red Beast.”

• Tomoe River Paper Notebook: Another Japanese notebook I am using as a personal anthology journal collecting books, quotes, films, and ideas that move me in this season. This is a concept I adopted from Ali.

• Montblanc Meisterstuck Fountain Pen: My daily driver, the only pen I use when journaling. It’s a pretty penny, but I love having a “signature pen.” You can hear more about how I thrifted it here. When I am not using it, I also love the Twisbi Eco (medium nib) for a great entry-level fountain pen—so buttery and smooth.

• Micron Pens: A tried-and-true I’ve been using since my days in design school, I love these for my Hobonchi Cousin, especially in .45mm (05); they’re the perfect consistency and don’t bleed.

• For highlighting, dotting, and more, a few of my favorites include the Zig Clean Dot Markers, Zebra Midliners, and Pilot Parallel Calligraphy Pens.

On Film

• Nikon F3: I have recently picked up my favorite film camera again and love honing the craft by photographing my family. I also have an Olympus Stylus Zoom 70 for a point-and-shoot film option.

• Nikon 35mm f/2 Lens: On that note, I also swapped my 50mm lens for this one and have been loving a different way of seeing. You can find both the camera and the lens from reliable sellers on eBay.

• Film Stocks: I currently have Portra 800 loaded into my Nikon F3, and Kodak Ultramax 400 loaded into my Olympus Stylus Zoom 70. Other film stocks I love include Kodak Gold 200 and, of course, the ever-beloved Kodak Portra 400. If you’re curious, I also get my film developed and scan at Boutique Film Lab here in Nashville, Tenn.

Alchemize: “Where do ideas speak to one another?”

This is where words, imagery, and symbols begin cross-pollinating, where I cull from different experiences and points of view in an attempt to create a worldview all my own.

• My Dream Work: My grandmother used to tell me, “Young men will prophesize, and old men will dream dreams.” Dreams have always been an important way I understand my inner world. Through years of dream analysis on my own, with my therapist, and in dream circles, I have developed a personal dictionary for the symbols through which my psyche speaks. Other references I like to use are a dream notebook (a Leuchtturm sketchbook), The Book of Symbols, and various other cards and useful tools.

• Midori 1 Page, 1 Day Codex Notebook: I call this my “learning notebook”—where I capture anything that piques my interest, be it diving deeper into our family’s Gene Keys, Human Design or astrology charts, writing personal essays, and more.

• Books: Like so many others, I love referencing a library of books—both fiction and non-fiction—to help my ideas and inspiration bloom. I’ve created an entire list of my top books for spirituality and personal development here. As for my current fiction pick, I am reading Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver.

• Podcasts: The same is true of podcasts. You can find those I love for spirituality and personal development here, but lately I have been loving On Being.

• Mother’s Wisdom Deck: I use a lot of different decks for my symbol and dream work (a lot of which you can find in my Amazon storefront), but I recently thrifted this one and have been loving it. The illustrations are beautiful and its descriptions always feel incredibly thoughtful. I don’t believe the deck is still in production, but the authors have published a new offering called The Wild & Sacred Feminine and it has a lot of crossover with the Mother’s Wisdom deck.

Adorn: “What care can I express through beauty?”

Beauty has always been one of my primary pillars. Whether a charm on my journal, a chrome anklet, or a beautifully crafted object I use every day.

• Thrifted Charms: If you saw my thrifted jewelry bag video, you’ll know I collect a lot of charms for a variety of uses—phone cases, journal covers, and hopefully one day to create a phone case in the style of Memor. Having a collection of found objects I find beautiful helps everything in my ecosystem feel personalized.

• Penco Clips: On the note of adornment for one’s journal, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the cult-favorite clampy clips (which I have in gold and brown) that are great for keeping books of all varieties flat. They’re also very cute.

• Fragrance: If you’ve been following this newsletter for a while, you’ll know that scent is one of the ways I most love adorning. Well, I had a baby. And despite being thrown into the ring of first-time parenthood, I have managed to glean small moments for what I love—testing products, playing with makeup—while uncovering new things I enjoy too. Negative Underwear Whipped Henley + Trackpant: Another small way I’ve been feeling put-together postpartum is with matching sets. When I’m not in my Eberjey pajamas, this duo from Negative Underwear is super chic and easy to nurse in.

Doll 10 Pink Power Brightening Treatment Powder: I hadn’t heard of this brand, but received the opportunity to try a few of their products and I have to say: I am so impressed. These were the opening lines that drew me into a recent TikTok, and then even further down a rabbit hole, all about home fragrance. If you’ve touched any corner of #fragrancetok, you’ll know perfume is having its (well-deserved) moment. Of course, individuals have been creating and luxuriating in the space for centuries. One corner that’s perhaps less spoken of is the world of home scents, a sub-genre I happen to be very passionate about.

Let’s explore the diverse world of smells by navigating incense, room sprays, candles and more with the shared goal of uncovering how our homes smell, and perhaps, how we can make them smell even better. I’ll divulge what I’m loving in my space, if you share with me what’s in yours. Let’s begin!

Essential Oils
For a more natural option, I love diffusing and using various essential oils. The result is always very calming and spa-like. A few essentials we always turn to include:

Vitruvi Stone ($123) + Move Diffuser ($199): We use these diffusers exclusively in our home because of how beautiful (and also effective) they are. We love to pair it with the Golden Premium Diffuser Blend ($28), which smells like sunshine with a bit of peppermint and ginger to uplift. Truly a magical combination!

Creating “custom blends” based on Aesop fragrances: This was a trick I learned from that original TikTok I mentioned early. We have Petigrain ($10), Bergamot ($14), and Vetiver ($12) oils we purchased from Whole Foods to smell like their Reverence line. It’s a trick that really works!

L’avant Fresh Linen Laundry Oil ($24): Almost all of our laundry detergent is unscented, but we like to use this oil on our wool dryer balls to add a little something extra.

Incense
I know the smoky fragrance isn’t for everyone, but I happen to love burning incense. Something about it feels sacred and nostalgic.

Tennen: I prefer Japanese incense and this brand houses some of my favorite varietals. I love their assortment packs ($34) because all of the scents are lovely and this allows you to try a few different flavors from the line.

Elemense: Another Japanese incense brand I love. We have Tetsukon ($35) which is a beautiful blend of bergamot, violet, and cedarwood, but I’ve also smelled Kiyobi ($35) and it is equally lovely.

Zenbunni: If you want powerful incense, Zenbunni’s Holy Smoke ($30) will fill your entire home. While all incense has a somewhat spiritual smell to it, this one is particularly strong and can be used for clearing energy in the space. It feels like being in the foothills of some all-natural California town, and I love it.

Papier D’Armenie: These are beautiful, affordable burning papers I ordered off Amazon ($10). They smell a little “grandma’s home” in the package, but burn in a really lovely way, so don’t knock them! We have “Traditional” and “Rose”.

Ponsont: Slightly more expensive, but an altogether lovely option for burning papers. I love all of their fragrances, but especially Rosa Rossa ($24).

Astier De Villatte: Bougie and beautiful, that’s what I’ll say. If you need a great gift, this is your fighter. I love Opéra (€50) and Porte des Lilas (€50) for something more floral.

Copal: A few years ago, Sam and I stayed at Be Tulum, and they would burn this ceremonially throughout the day, mostly to keep the mosquitos at bay. But I learned to love the smell and now purchase the resin ($5) to burn occasionally at home.

Morning Star: If you need a lovely budget-friendly option, this is the one. I love the green tea scent ($15).

Palo Santo ($20): One of my favorite smells of all time. I use this more ceremonially to clear energy around my body. As always, be sure you’re conscious of sustainable harvesting practices with both this and white sage.

White Sage ($12): Similar to Palo Santo, I’ll use this to clear the energy in my home. I’ve grown to love the scent, although my husband does not. If you’re sensitive, I also received a great spray version from one of my close girlfriends.

Room & Linen Sprays
Perfume Guns by Frederic Malle ($215): These are pricey, but so worth it. One of my favorite fragrances for my home is Jurassic Flower, but I think it may be discontinued!

Dans Mon Lit by Frederic Malle ($155): This is the lightest and lovliest linen spray.

Figuier Room Spray ($80): Diptyque has beautiful room sprays that make great gifts. The most popular is Baies, but I love Figuier for a super fresh option.

Candles

It’s August and I won’t lie: I’m ready for autumn. But while I’m already breaking the boots out of closet hibernation, one habit of mine that was born this past summer and will be a mainstay as the cooler months make their grand entrance is my body care routine.

I took my body care more seriously after a long stint of neglecting it. Once cracks started to form, I knew it was time to flip the script. Since then, I have been diligently dry-brushing, exfoliating, and moisturizing. I must admit: the results show. Below is a step-by-step look into my routine, in case you were in need of a switch-up to your own, no matter the season. Fair warning: it’s extensive. As a friendly reminder, you don’t need to incorporate every step and product. Many times, I have the privilege of getting various items sent to me to try and share the ones I love most. As always, pick and choose what piques your interest and might feel right for you.

Step 1: Body Wash / I believe skin maintenance begins in the shower. I love a variety of different body washes for their scent, but the one I’ve been gravitating toward most recently is this hyaluronic option. It’s fragrance-free, so I can mix a bit of it with any of my scented options and know this adds an extra layer of hydration. It also lathers so beautifully.

Step 2: Dry-Brushing / I know a lot of people dry-brush before they get into the shower, but I like to do it after as a pre-step to my serums and lotions. Plus, I think it feels so nice right after the steam of a hot shower. I recently received the UBeauty Body Brush and it is so good! The bristles are thicker than other options on the market and the handle more sturdy, so it really allows for great exfoliation and grip. It also looks incredibly chic on your vanity!

Step 3: Chemical Exfoliation / This is a newer step in my routine. I’m not sure what took me so long because I love chemical exfoliation for my face. It’s light and effective, and provides the added layer of exfoliation I love. What more could I ask for? Step 4: Serum / I have a number of different body serums and have to admit, they’re one of my favorite steps in this routine. While I have many that I have tried and adored, there are two I think are really worth mentioning: UBeauty’s Super Body Hydrator and Omorovicza’s The Body Serum. They’re both pricey, so if you were to only choose one, I’d say go for UBeauty. It is truly unlike any product I’ve tried. Step 5: Body Lotion / After serum, I like to be extra and top it off with lotion, which helps to really seal in every product we’ve layered on previously. For pure moisturizing purposes, I’ll reach for Naturium’s Bio-Lipid Restoring Body Lotion. It’s so hydrating without being thick, so it melts seamlessly into the skin. Step 6: Body Oil / To add extra hydration and shine and really seal the deal, I like my final step to be a body oil. My favorite for the past year or so is Osea’s Undaria Algae Body Oil. There is no added fragrance, but the smell is so heavenly. What’s more the product is so incredibly moisturizing without feeling sticky. If I want something more for the fragrance and an actual shimmer, I’ll reach for Nuxe’s Shimmering Body Oil.

As a part of the 75 Hard Challenge I’m doing for aspiring content creators, I have been pinning daily. One thing I’ve noticed about myself, which if it wasn’t apparent before is really apparent now, is that I live for good denim. Preferably vintage because it’s timeless; it’s classic; it’s good for the environment. And nothing will ever quite beat sourcing a pair of vintage denim that fits you like a glove, the pair that everyone asks you where you bought because it looks that good on you.

A lot of vintage curators will tell you that you need to know your measurements and go directly to eBay, to which I’d say they’re right. You should know your measurements. But when I was starting my vintage denim collecting journey, eBay felt akin to the Wild West. I didn’t know where to start and if I did, sifting through the pages and pages of various sellers felt daunting. If you can relate and you’re willing to shell out a couple hundred dollars for your perfect pair (which is comparable to a new pair of good denim) , I have just the places for you.

I was recently chatting with a friend about our shared love of fragrance. She’s newer to the game and astutely remarked, “One thing I didn’t expect was the price tag!” So fair. While it’s fun to build a robust fragrance collection, it can also be wildly expensive depending on the brands, concentration, and bottles you’re eyeing. That’s why I think it’s both smart (and strategic) to build a diverse collection based on an ever-expanding knowledge of what’s currently on the market, your personal needs, and of course, budget. For me, this means opting for a dupe from time to time.

I know “dupe” culture has come under quite a bit of scrutiny lately. There are arguments that the existence of a “dupe” takes away from the artistry and originality of the creators in which said dupe is attempting to replicate. But the truth of the matter is that there are different expectations, values, and budgets out there, and I believe there should be an option for everyone, regardless income or socioeconomic status. If you love something, but can’t afford it, you should still be able to achieve a similar effect at a lower cost, given the knowledge of what you’re purchasing and deciding if it’s right for you. That’s where the dupe comes into play! There will be those who only want the original and those who want a more affordable option, and that’s what makes fragrance individual to every person collecting.

1. Maison Louis Marie No. 4 Bois de Balincourt, $94 (50 ml): When you consider that purchasing this option cuts the original price down more than half, it is well worth it. I own both No. 4 and Santal 33, and these two smell nearly identical (with Le Labo’s variation perhaps being slightly woodier, but imperceptibly so to most noses). The staying power on both variations is really good too. I love so many of the offerings from Masion Louis Marie.

2. Dossier Woody Sandalwood, $49 (50 ml): I’ve tried a number of the “inspired by” fragrances from Dossier over the years and can confidently say they get the job done nearly 90% of the time. The longevity isn’t nearly as lasting, so you won’t get that power behind the fragrance that you would with the original, but $29 - $49, you can’t go wrong.

3. Salt & Stone Santal & Vetiver Body Fragrance Mist, $45 (100 ml): Of all the options, this one is by far the most bang for your buck. I love the packaging, but don’t say I didn’t warn you about the longevity. If I were to choose between this and Dossier’s, I would choose Salt & Stone’s version for value + branding alone. I also love their Saffron & Cedar Candle, which funny enough, reminds me of a blend of Baccarat Rouge and Le Labo’s Another 13.

Maison Francis Kurkdijan Baccarat Rouge 540, $325 (2.4 oz)

Notes: Saffron, Jasmine, Amberwood, Ambergris, Fir Resin, Cedar

1. Dime Beauty Dans Le Bois, $52 (1.7 oz): Dime’s take on Baccarat is slightly sweeter and lighter overall because let’s face it: nothing beats the staying power of Baccarat Rouge 540. But this is a great (clean!) option to give you the same effect. I love to use this one as hair perfume.

2. Alt. Crystal No. 23, $49 (2 oz.): Alt. Fragrances get close to their originator, but don’t always hit the mark. That said, this one is pretty good! I find it to be a bit oily and the packaging needs to be reworked, but I can confidently say it is sisters with the original Baccarat Rouge. I haven’t tried it personally, but if you were to decide between this and Dossier’s Ambery Saffron ($49, 50 ml), I’d perhaps go with the later.

3. Orientica Amber Rouge, $69 (2.7 oz.): TikTok raves about this Baccarat dupe, although I haven’t tried it myself. Baccarat loyalists claim it’s the closest they’ve come to the original and the performance goes head-to-head with MFK’s version.

Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt, $118 (50 ml)

Notes: Sea Salt, Sage, Grapefruit, Ambrette, Seaweed

1. Dossier Woody Sage, $29 (50 ml): Now this fragrance was a request by a friend, so I can’t speak personally to how close this is to the original! But after extensive online research, the Dossier option appears to be the one others believe to be the closest (with longer staying power too!)

2. Fine’ry Before the Rainbow, $30 (60 ml): This variation is overall a bit sweeter than Jo Malone’s original, but a great option to sniff if you’re browsing the aisles at Target and wanting to find a more affordable alternative. I say get this one in addition to your original Wood Sage & Sea Salt, so you can swap each in and out and make the OG last longer.

3. Alt Fragrance Driftwood, $29 (60 ml): Again, I can’t speak to the exact likeness of this option, but find any of the Alt. Fragrances to be a good option for when you don’t want to splurge on the real deal.

1. Dr. Diamond’s Metacine InstaFacial Collection Emulsion: A pretty penny, but worth every single cent. I wake up looking more youthful, glowy, and even. The first expensive skincare item I’ve tried in a while that actually works.

2. Escentric Molecules Molecule 01: Rediscovering a forever favorite. For a while, Molecule 01 got pushed to the side in favor of newer, more enchanting skin scents, but to be completely honest? There’s very little that can stand up to the original. I love it so much, I want to drench myself in it sometimes.

3. Presumed Innocent on Apple TV+: This show reminds me why we actually do love Jake Gyllenhal despite what all the T-Swift fans have to say. I was captivated from the very first episode, and true crime, whodunnit shows are not my typical go-to. I have a theory the wife did it, but I guess we’ll find out soon enough as there is only (1!) episode left at the time I write this.

4. U Beauty The Super Body Hydrator: This moisturizer is unlike any product I’ve tried. It has the most lovely, light and milky consistency, but is so indescribably nourishing. I’ve been using it as a base layer in my skincare routine (although it’d be stunning on its own) and have dramatically decreased the amount of products I’m using because of it. It makes my skin so hydrated.

5. Patrick Ta Major Volume Plumping Lipgloss: Another rediscovery. The truth is that there are a lot of lipglosses on the market these days. While there are a few I do absolutely love (read: Refy, Summer Fridays, etc.), there are few that compare to the gloss and pout of Patrick Ta’s. I love the color 2 CCs, and find myself re-reaching for it more and more.

6. Cold Frothing Matcha: Not only does this make your matcha morning routine so much easier, it’s also delicious! I recently shared my summer matcha routine here. I’ve been especially loving Táche for the cold froth portion!

7. Nourishing Skin + Wellness: If you’re in the Nashville/Franklin area, you need to visit Kari at Nourishing Skin + Wellness. She is a holistic esthetician that specializes in tissue health and lymphatic drainage. I was lucky enough to receive a facial from her earlier this month and it was one of the most relaxing and, well, nourishing experiences I’ve ever had!

8. Refinery Fragrances + Perfumery: On the topic of Nashville-based spots, you need to check out is Refinery, Music City’s first perfumery carrying niche and specialty lines. I have been saying we need something like this for so long, and we finally have it. The owners are absolute dolls and their selection is so good (and growing!). A must-visit if you’re local to Nashville. They carry so many fragrances I’ve mentioned in this newsletter including Molecule 01, BDK’s Citrus Riviera, and more, so definitely stop in and give them a sniff IRL.

9. Naturium Bio-Lipid Restoring Body Lotion: This lightweight moisturizer has been the secondary companion to my U-Beauty Hydrator and is the perfect amount of hydration without leaving the skin feeling greasy. What’s more, it’s only $15 and you can pick it up at your local Target.

10. Leesa Reserve Hybrid Mattress: Sam and I desperately needed a new mattress after using the one I’ve owned since moving to Nashville ten years ago. When Leesa agreed to partner with us, we were over the moon! We have the Leesa Reserve Hybrid, and both Sam and I are obsessed with it. Sam wanted something firm and I wanted something plush, and I really do feel it’s that perfect in-between. 12. Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Extra Strength Peel Pads: A tried-and-true, these keep my complexion clear and bright. What more could you dream of?

13. Redken Acidic Bonding Line: If you’re a fan of Olaplex, but craving something a bit lighter, I think you’ll love this! I use the shampoo, liquid bonding mask, and leave-in and my hair feels nourished, soft, and looks so incredibly healthy. This also smells just like Anthropologie’s Volcano candle.

But sometimes I look at the collection of things I’ve amassed and think to myself, “Is it actually worth it?” The more I pondered this question with various objects that at the time felt like a must-have lying either unused or unappreciated around my home, the more I realized I can’t be the only one pondering.

The Internet, with its cavernous multitudes of “expert articles” and Reddit threads, has a tendency to make us want consumer goods without any regard for more practical decision-making factors such as price, practicality, and function. While I love to add a bit of charm and glamor to my every day, I also pride myself on being a very composed shopper. As in, I don’t slap my credit card on the reader or enter it into the checkout field without first being ultra-strategic about how long I’ve wanted it, how replenished my funds feel, and how impacted I am by my emotions at the time. I suppose being an avid thrifter will do this to you.

Today I figured we’d explore some of the most talked about items the World Wide Web has declared are essential and see, well, if they’re actually worth it. I imagine there is a laundry list of others we could add to the discussion, so drop a comment below and let me know what you want us to dissect next.

❌ The Mason Pearson Brush, $275

I know we’ve all heard of the British-born brush prestigious publications, stylists, and influencers alike will tell you that you need. Boar bristles + nylon tufts are what set it apart from the rest of the brushes on the market, and I’ll admit! It is a great hairbrush. Never mind the brand is asking you pay nearly $300 (prices range for various sizes, of course)! Mason Pearson boasts longstanding tradition and quality that rivals any of its competitors. To which I say: it’s just not true. I have come across countless dupes that are all a fraction of the price (some as affordable as $10) and give the same impressive results. Some of the front runners include: Crown Affair ($74) and Ion ($10! Which is the one I own and can confirm that aside from perhaps some minor density discrepancies, looks and feels the exact same). If you want to have the Mason Pearson logo for your cute flat-lays and Instagram posts, by all means, add it to your collection! You won’t be disappointed. But if it’s the quality and functionality of the hair brush you’re after, I’d encourage you to look for alternatives elsewhere.

✅ Aesop Resurrection Hand Wash, $41

I remember when this hand soap first climbed the ranks in popularity. My mother thought I was crazy for wanting to replace her beloved Bath & Body Works she’d amass during BOGO promotions with anything with a price tag north of $10. Like so many of these items, when we’re purchasing them, we’re not just purchasing the product itself. We’re purchasing a curated design eye, an aesthetic, a lifestyle. Admittedly, I love the Aesop hand wash (and any of its adjacent varietals, think: Byredo, Le Labo, and the like) and truly believe it makes the perfect gift because who actually wants to buy expensive hand soap for themselves? Therefore, I do actually think it’s worth it, but not for repeat consumption. My advice? Treat yourself or a friend to a set of your choice of wash + balm. When the time comes to replace it, find a great “dupe” for the product inside like the one from Element Brooklyn and keep the same, sleek bottle. You get to maintain the vibes, while keeping those gorgeous bottles out of landfills. Win-win.

✅ Diptyque (or any luxury) Candle, $74

In a similar spirit as the hand wash above, Diptyque candles (again and any of their adjacent varietals, think: Byredo, Cire Trudon, Astier de Villatte, etc.) have also graced coffee tables and kitchen counters in many a chic home, and my sentiments about them are very much the same. If you appreciate the ambiance of lighting a luxury candle—the scent and aesthetic it brings to a space—these are 100% worth it. If you are trying to reduce waste and costs, look to refilling your votives once the wick has been lit for the last time. You get to keep the vibes, without worrying about lighting your money on fire. For this, I again turn to Element Brooklyn. The “In Bloom” Candle refill retails for $16.50 and is a near exact dupe for Diptyque’s Baies.

✅ Diptyque Do Son Hair Mist, $72

Surprisingly, this is one item on the list I am all for, and not just this particular one—hair perfume in general. It sounds ridiculous, but when fragrances can reach upwards of $300-$400 dollars or more, sometimes it’s nice to invite the same fragrance you love into your collection at a fraction of the cost. And who doesn’t want their hair to smell intoxicatingly good? You get the same look and feel of if you were to purchase the brand’s perfume bottle, but without breaking the bank (completely). If that still feels out of your budget, there are so many great “dupe” sites, think: Dossier, Alt Fragrances, Fine’ry, etc. that have similar fragrance compositions to all your favorites, but with a much less powerful projection and stay power. These could also be used as hair perfume, although you won’t get the chic bottle. So pick your poison!

❌ A Diamond Tennis Necklace, $3000+

Truth be told: I don’t know the actual cost of a tennis necklace, well because, I’ve never purchased one. But I would suspect the going rate is quite high. I might not be the target demographic for a purchase of this caliber, but my thought process is: why spend this much money on something there are so many more affordable (sure, not diamond, but still!) options that offer the same look and minor variations nearly imperceptible to the human eye? I love the look of a tennis necklace, but sometimes they can be hard to style. Why not just scoop a good white sapphire option instead? I love Aurate’s version, but have heard nothing but great things about both D’Orsay and Mejuri’s as well.

✅ Chanel Hand Cream, $62

This really extends to any luxury hand cream (not night cream, however, because that’s a completely different discussion). Here’s what I’ll say: if you’re an avid hand cream user, as in, “I need hand cream because my hands are perpetually dry and I want them to feel moisturized and renewed”, this is probably not the hand cream for you. But if you are looking for something chic to add to your purse or bedside table that is a good product with a heavenly smell, then this is your girl. This is another item I love to gift to friends because it feels luxury without feeling like you have to take out a personal loan to purchase it. In hindsight, I’m finding that the smaller luxury purchases, for me at least, feel a bit more worth it because they allow you to invite the sentiment of luxury into your home, and that in and of itself is a mood booster at least, a tool for manifesting even greater luxury and wealth into your life at best.

For the past few weeks, I have been collecting samples and making my way through copious amounts of fragrances, some marketed for summertime, others that fall into the categories of what I like to smell like in warmer months: mostly tantalizing florals, crisp citruses, and even a woodsy variation (you know I love a woody scent!) that chameleons on different skin types and environments depending on the occasion. The common thread that unites them all? Each is ideal, in its own way, for consideration in your own collection of summer fragrances. Let’s begin, shall we?

Saskia, Grandiflora, $220 (50ml): From the moment I first got my hands on this fragrance, I knew it was special. A photorealistic scent meant to transport you to a master floral designer’s shop in Sydney, there is a warmth and depth to Saskia that propels it into a category all its own. It’s as if the creator, Christophe Laudamiel, sought to capture the most beautiful flowers one could source (think: ylang-ylang, gardenia, violet) at their most lush, ripe moment—in peak sunshine of a decadent green house just before picking. Saskia smells feminine, beautiful, but also self-contained and intentional. If you’re a floral fan, I think you will adore this. Best for: Romantic date nights with your lover

Nitesurf Neroli, Régimes des Fleurs, $240 (75ml): If I could bottle the essence of an impeccably written summertime fantasy, it would be Nitesurf Neroli from Régimes des Fleurs. While there is no question this fragrance is sweet from the outset (neroli will do that to you), there is also an aquatic (dare I say briny) note underneath that makes the composition feel much chicer than your typical summertime floral. Nitesurf Neroli is enigmatic: saccharine, but lived-in and salty. Inviting, but perhaps a touch nuanced for just anyone to adore. The more the fragrance sits on the skin, the more it feels like it is a living part of you, as though the story it tells was perhaps written for you all along. I personally love it and think it should be on every cool girl’s vanity exclusively from the months of June to August, until the sun sets over the last good beach day, and autumn makes us nostalgic for days we took the coast for granted. Best for: Impromptu getaways to the sea, where your only companions are a notebook, your own wistful thoughts, and the alluring promise of romance

Smiley Face Garden, Dedcool, $90 (1.7 oz): Of the fragrances on the list, this one feels the most green, almost earthy. While you most certainly pick up hints of floral (rose and neroli namely), there is a generous dose of cedar and amber that anchors the base and balances the composition for a very clean, approachable feel. While some perfumes can feel very niche, a large majority of individuals might enjoy Smiley Face Garden. It’s a fragrance that dips its toes in something seasonally expected, but knows all too well that in its heart of hearts, it is a beautiful, ambery musk to enjoy year-round. It’s light, lovely, and damn near universal. Best for: Everyday wear, when you want to swap out your usual musk for something with a bit more summertime allure

Ilio, Diptyque, $180 (3.4 oz): Ilio feels like Italian summer, like Call Me By Your Name, like the possibility of falling in love on a trip to the Mediterranean with your parents. It’s refreshing, easy, and a ever so romantic, with familiar ingredients like iris and bergamot coupled with a few exotic curveballs such as prickly pear, making it altogether watery and perfect for the coast. While a lot of the floral fragrances on the list lean sweet, this one is much more verdant and refreshing. The sillage and staying power isn’t the best, but I think that only adds to the intrigue. Don’t you want to be spritzing yourself with a lush fragrance all summer long? What if someone enchanting comes a long and gets a whiff? Best for: Crystallizing that European vacation to memory

First, it must be said that I feel this in my bones. As someone who prefers to fill her wardrobe with timeless and versatile pieces, I am always on the hunt for amazing tees. And while I love to thrift a good portion of my wardrobe, or source secondhand, I find good tees are so much less of a headache to buy new. So this request felt particularly serendipitous, as I too, have been on the search for perfect tees of all variations and sizes—a lifelong hunt, in my opinion! I figure what better subject to discuss this week than that of the perfect white tee(s). Side note: I love receiving requests like these! Because this newsletter has the potential to be miles long, I am going to start with a few basic versions I am on the hunt for: oversized, boyfriend, and baby. I’ll include options I own in these categories, as well as other variations I’ve heard great things about. This should offer a wide selection in style and price to fit any budget, taste, etc. Let’s begin!

Oversized

A newer-to-my-personal-wardrobe category, I’ve seen so many options for boxy tees pop up from The Row (although who in their right mind would pay $620 for a t-shirt?!) all the way to H&M. This style always feels very Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen to me. It makes a statement, but also exudes an effortless, nonchalant quality too. You want the fit to be oversized, but not so intense it swallows you whole. It’s a delicate balance, but there are a few brands I think get it right.

I own both the Elwood option (which my husband and I share, so I have it in size “large”) and the Pistola Denim option (which I have in size “small”). I say both are worth the money. The Elwood has that thin, vintage feel everyone loves these days, whereas you can definitely tell why the Pistola has such a price increase because of how thick the material is. While I love both, I will say the Pistola version has a slit in the back. Something to keep in mind as you weigh style options and what you’ll be wearing the shirts for.

Boyfriend

1. Cotton Crew Neck T-Shirt, $10, Uniqlo, 2. Organic Cotton Vintage Shrunken T-Shirt, $25, Gap, 3. The Margo, $68, LESET, 4. Adine Shrunken Tee, $88, AGOLDE, 5. Molly Tee, $95, La Ligne, 6. Classic Tee, $110, Hanes x RE/DONE

It was really the Hanes x RE/DONE tee that first made me fall in love with this fit. Not too tight, not too loose, but a t-shirt variation that exists somewhere in the perfect middle. I love throwing on a pair of vintage Levi’s and a boyfriend tee for that effortless feel. Because we’re currently in the thick of summer, I’d pair with my favorite Havaianas flip-flops and some silver bangles and call the outfit good to go!

Of these options, I own the two most expensive (both in size “small”). They’re pricey, don’t get me wrong, but worth every penny. Of the two, I find myself reaching for the Hanes x RE/DONE option most often, as it’s the perfect lightweight feel and I adore the fit. But the Molly tee from La Ligne is ideal for dressing up.

Baby

1. Ashlyn T-Shirt, $18, John Galt/Brandy Melville, 2. The Cropped Baby Tee, $40, Dairy Boy, 3. Bellevue Tee, $48, Gil Rodriguez, 4. The Baby Tee, $56, Cou Cou Intimates, 5. While some styles listed (like the Dairy Boy variation) bridge the gap between “boyfriend” and “baby”, each option has that petite fit reminiscent of the 90s I feel adequately categorizes it as “baby”. I personally love a baby tee when paired with oversized denim or your favorite pair of sweats...something oversized on the bottom to give the look balance. While I haven’t tried all the variations except the John Galt/Brandy version (which I know is a controversial pick at best), I love that some of the other tees listed like Gil Rodriguez and Cou Cou are more stylish and size-inclusive.

I’ve said this once and I’m sure I’ll say it again: there’s something irreplaceable about being able to walk into a local store, find a myriad of items you adore, and not have to worry about the price tag. While I understand this is a privilege and not everyone’s approach/relationship to secondhand shopping, to be able to thrift is to truly open up a world of possibilities for your wardrobe, home decor, and more.

In recent years, my love for thrifting has grown strong. It took some time, but with a bit of practice and a lot of insight from fellow appreciators of the craft, I’ve developed quite a few tips and tricks of the trade. I am here to declare you can find really amazing things while thrifting. In fact, I’ve discovered: designer bags and shoes, perfect-fitting vintage Levi’s, unique coffee table books, invaluable art pieces and so much more. All you need is a bit of patience and a commitment to keep going back. I guarantee you’ll find items you will love and cherish for years to come.

It’s important to note that my definition of thrifting might be quite different than yours, dear reader. In my opinion, there are definitely tiers. And while there is no denying you can score great deals and amazing pieces at pre-curated vintage stores and your local Buffalo exchange, for the sake of this newsletter, I will be speaking strictly about the Goodwills and local mom-and-pop shops that really allow you to get your hands dirty and treasure hunt…one step up from true and relentless digging at a bin.

I don’t think one’s personal newsletter should have to come with a disclaimer, but it should be stated that these are the tips I’ve found most helpful on own my journey. Like anything in life, this experience will be different for you depending on where you live, what you like, and so many other factors. Try to keep an open mind! 1. Understand Thrifting is a Time Commitment

You really can’t go into a thrift store for 20 minutes with expectations for finding something spectacular. Sometimes the stars align and it happens, but most of the time you’re going to need to reconcile with the fact that finding special items takes time. Part of the satisfaction of the process is that it’s a treasure hunt! Every time I visit the thrift, I expect to spend at least two hours pouring through every single item on every single rack. If I don’t have enough time to allot that day I’ll pour through every single item on specific racks that lure me in. Either way, this is an art that takes time, so go into any thrift trip with aligned expectations!

2. Know What To Look For (& Seek Low-Hanging Fruit)

While I don’t believe you can ever go into a thrift experience expecting to find anything in particular (rather one should allow inspiration to spark and the thrift gods to lead them), I do think it’s helpful to know what items are low-hanging fruit and which categories you’ll have an easier time finding the good stuff. For me, this is always shoes, bags, jewelry, home decor, and men’s button-downs. While you won’t always find great items in these categories, I always start here to see if something piques my interest. If I find something good, it motivates me to keep digging in harder-to-find categories. My approach is this: look at the style of the item first (do you like it? Is it something you would wear?), then inspect condition next (is it in good shape? Any holes? Any leather rot?), next comes a peek at the label (Is it truly vintage? Is it a good brand?), and if you’re a snob like me look at material (100% silk? 100% cashmere? A great a versatile blend of synthetics?). Sometimes you’ll hit gold on of the above! Knowing where and what to look for definitely makes your thrifting experiences more enjoyable. The more you go in your local city, the more you’ll pick up these tricks of the trade.

3. Check the Go-Back Racks

Often times, thrift stores will have return racks by the dressing rooms. This should be one of the first stops in case anyone has already found some goodies, but opted not to purchase them. It takes out a lot of the guesswork, and I’ve found some truly great pieces that perhaps weren’t *quite right* for someone else. Often times, thrift stores will also bring other racks of new items to be put out onto the floor. These are always great places to start too, as they’re typically all new-to-you and laid out in a mini section before being wedged in with the rest.

4. Play to Your Local Thrift Stores’ Strong Suits

It’s no secret that some thrifts are better than others, so it’s good to do your research (both digitally and for yourself) on what stores are hubs for the good stuff, as well as which excel in certain categories. TikTok is a great resource for finding “good thrifts” in your city. If you’re local to Nashville, some of my favorite thrift stores include: Southern Thrift, Music City Thrift, Thrift Smart, and Graceworks. But I almost always prefer the Southern Thrift on Metroplex Dr. to the one on Charlotte, and almost exclusively visit Music City Thrift for their men’s section. Thrift Smart can be great too, although a little pricey at times. While Graceworks is a bit of a drive, it’s usually worth it because they have an entire section of “nicer items” and I’ve found tons of designer there.

5. Go Thrifting A LOT

In the world of instant gratification we live, we crave immediate results. But like I mentioned in tip #1, thrifting is a commitment. The secondhand world is one-of-a-kind, and it’s always shifting and changing. To really stay on top of it and score good items routinely, you’ll want to go as often as you can. For me, this looks like a couple of times a week if I can swing it, but figure out a schedule that works for you and your schedule.

There’s a plethora of other rabbits in my hat when it comes to thrifting, but I want to give us a chance to expand on the list and grow as a community. 1. Nemat Amber Oil, $21 (9/10): This should come as no surprise, I speak of this little powerhouse in just about every fragrance video I produce. I go through this stuff like water. I use it as a base for all my other fragrances nearly every day. The only time I don’t is when I’m swapping it out for another recent favorite—its sister product—sandalwood oil.

2. Ósea Undaria Algae Body Butter, $56 (8/10): I received a travel pack of Ósea products for my birthday and was absolutely blown away by everything inside—the body oil, body balm, and this body butter. Not only is the smell heavenly, but the product is so moisturizing without leaving your skin too slippery. It’s one of the rare products that I envision myself repurchasing again and again. For what it’s worth, I’m nearly out of the other two products too. Time for a restock of the entire line!

3. Necessaire The Body Serum, $45 (5/10): I love Necessaire for its packaging and simple approach, but I have to admit: I’ve tried a lot of body serums in recent months and this one simply did not hold a candle to some of the others. It feels so light that I question if it’s doing anything for my skin at all. It’s fragrance-free, which is an intentional choice, but I can’t help but wonder if it just adds to the blasé feel of the entire product? It’s just pretty average, in my opinion.

4. Clinique Take the Day Off Cleansing Oil, $37 (7/10): I love to try a cleansing balm/oil, but I will say that this is one of the few that I will return to and seek if I’m out. What can I say? It’s a good product. Does it blow me away? I mean, how much can you be blown away by a cleansing balm? That said, I think this has the perfect amount of slip to remove stubborn eye makeup without pulling at your skin, and does a great job removing your makeup.

   

5. Able Green Cedar Perfume, $180 (8.5/10): Admittedly, both Sam and I used this up because we both loved it so much. If you are a fan of Le Labo’s Santal 33 or Super Cedar by Byredo, you will adore this. Bonus points because it is a clean, non-toxic brand. We would certainly repurchase this. It’s the perfect, unisex woody scent. The longevity is a bit weak, but I overlook it because I love the fragrance so much.

6. Innersense Quiet Calm Curl Control, $28 (9/10): This should be a non-negotiable for all wavy/curly girls. It adds the perfect amount of moisture, without weighing the hair down, plus it has great ingredients. I use this as leave-in while I’m still in the shower and my hair is sopping wet to help form curl clumps. When I get out of the shower, I’ll still add gel or mousse, but I like to believe this is is a big reason why my curls continue to look so healthy.

7. Good Molecules Discoloration Correcting Body Treatment, $15 (8/10): I went through this QUICK. I love the texture! It penetrates deep into the layers of the skin, so you can really feel it working. I have also noticed a much more even appearance to my skin tone overall. It’s also super affordable and can picked up at your local Ulta. I’ll definitely be repurchasing as a part of my routine body care routine.

8. Tatcha Dewy Skin Cream, $72 (10/10): Admittedly, this is my husband’s empty and review, but I figured it was good to include in case you were looking for something for yourself or your partner. Sam said, and I quote, “This is the best skin cream I’ve ever tried. It makes me feel like a perfectly dewy goddess.” lol

   

9. True Botanicals Phyto Retinol Anti-Aging Body Lotion, $68 (7/10): There haven’t been many products from the True Botanicals line I haven’t enjoyed, but this one really is top tier. If you know me, you know I’m super scent motivated, so not only did I really love the scent of this, I also found it to give the perfect level of moisture. Verdict is out on if the retinol component actually works, but even if it’s giving my skin a youthful appearance because of the placebo effect, I’ll take it.

10. Arbonne RE9 Advanced Retexturizing Serum In Lotion, $56 (9/10): It might be a mouthful to say, but I really love this product. It’s lightweight, so it sinks into the skin nicely. It also smells wonderful and has tons of amazing ingredients like AHA as well. It’s the one Arbonne product (along with their Genius pads) I continuously ask my mother in law (who has her own Arbonne business) to gift me during the holidays.

11. Sunduk Jeju Cleansing Balm, $25 (6.5/10): This was a gift from my sister-in-law and I really did enjoy it! The packaging is designed to grind the product up and out, so it is a much more sanitary option as far as cleansing balms are concerned. I found the product inside to work well too! Plus, you can’t beat a $25 price tag. I think the Clinique option has a slight edge over this one, but I would recommend both.

12. Elf Camo Color Corrector in “Peach”, $4 (8.5/10): I have already repurchased this product twice, I love it that much. I honestly didn’t really know what a color corrector was for, but once I started using them correctly, I couldn’t live without them. This one helps with brightness. I use it before my concealer to really brighten my undereye area.

There was a time not that long ago (dare I say last week) when I would arrive at the blinking cursor of this open-ended space and write from a place of desperation. Truthfully, it’s where a majority of my writing has been born, from the sheer exhaust of working every other solution so thin I didn’t know what else to do but write. It’s why Light House exists at all; I needed a space to process the often all-encompassing big-ness of everything I felt. Many times this has proven helpful for me, cathartic even. Sometimes it has been fruitful for you too. One thing is for certain: it has always been honest.

Life is circuitous. It does not exist in a quantifiable binary of this or that. The magic of existence is that it is, in fact, multiplicitous. And when a season ends, one can almost always expect it to return with a slightly different hue later on. Winter eventually makes way for warmer days. A speck of light appears amongst what was once imagined as a mass of never-ending, inky darkness. And in due time, the intense pressure of struggle releases to an ocean of clarity and ease. It’s all necessary to create a life rich and worth living. We keep receiving opportunities, both difficult and expansive, to become more ourselves.

Today as I arrived at the blinking cursor of this open-ended space, what might have once felt like desperation has shape-shifted yet again into something resembling hopefulness. It feels like years (dare I say five or six) since I’ve been able to look onto the agenda of my day with any sort of levity, instead of this feeling I can only describe as a solution to hunt down. I’ve been known to take an acutely diagnostic approach to life’s big questions: How can I learn to love myself? Even though I’d been predisposed to search for flaws. What if I’m ordinary? Despite wanting so badly to be special. What the fuck am I doing? No footnote, I just circled back to this one a lot. I have always known my mind to be clever. It makes sense then that I needed plenty of space for contemplation before arriving to some kinder enclave for my spirt and soul to rest. I never anticipated it would take five or six years to find. I never imagined each day could feel like such a slog.

Now that I’m on the other side of so many of the questions (or perhaps nestled further into the center seems more appropriate), I feel like an old crone who has traversed countless peaks and valleys, having luckily collected an abundance of insight to share. That’s the thing about pain, it often carries with it a nugget of value too, a charm distinctly one’s own earned from a particular style of fight. In the glow of this new and hopeful place I’ve arrived, not in spite of the desperation but because of it, I am able to see so much of what caused the questions to form in the first place. And as much as I hate to admit it, a lot was my own doing. That’s the thing about a sharp mind: sometimes the cleverness is misdirected and it begins to eat away at you internally. You can become your own worst enemy, as they say, but perhaps that’s just another chance to remember it’s not all of who you are.

What feels important is this: eventually I came to discover that in the midst of a really difficult season, while trying to conjure the “right” answers to questions—solutions where I might appear successful or pleasant, safe within the confines of societal rules—I was giving all my power away. I alone, with this clever mind of mine, continued to uphold judgements and narratives that weren’t even my own. And the most diabolic part is that I actually thought I had a handle on my situation that way. I ached so badly for certain things (a piece of art that would distinguish me amongst the rest, the ability to say with certainty that no one was upset with me, peace from the turmoil of my family, a following) and feared losing what I cherished most (the partnership I had fostered over the last sixteen years, the fragile sense of safety I had found for myself, a glint of love and fortitude that finally began to surface) that the only thing I could ever concentrate on was making sure I could maintain some sort of equilibrium between the desperation of trying to keep what I’d acquired and the hope for a future where I could possibly want for more.

By way of this fraught and one-note juggling act, I was keeping myself too small to realize (or even admit to) the scariest, yet most extraordinary dreams I had that I wouldn’t allow myself to become a bigger, more dynamic version of who I was always meant to be. I don’t wish to disparage the tactics we turn toward in times of desperation because so often they’re merely a means of survival. All I can hope to do is paint using slightly different strokes to offer a fuller picture of what and how life can be. At some point, I realized I had to let go of my need for control and finite answers to buoy the illusion of stability, so that I could invite in the myriad other sensations, insights, and versions of self life had waiting for me. I had to get present (instead of living in the past or future), embrace the season I was in (even if it was a season of hardship and not knowing), and reclaim what was rightfully mine: my life (the place where all my power existed).

I’d like to tell you there is some secret formula to fast-track to a lighter and more ease-filled place, but the truth is that I did not come to these conclusions on my own. Part of the sacred multiplicity of life, I believe, is that it follows a Divine undercurrent. We exist in the flow, and we play our part. But playing that part means believing that while you may feel bored or anxious, depressed or unsure, there also exists some sacred, more intelligent, and altogether benevolent presence constantly pulling you toward your wider evolution: a-ha moments, new waves of people, different challenges to bring about a new type of change. A presence that brings you closer to the full spectrum of human life. I say all of this to remind you, that if you’re presently in a season that feels closer to desperation, where every day feels like a slog, remember hope is there too, and that your power remains constant through it all, even if you can’t quite see that yet.

Life may ebb and flow, but the spirit of who you are and what you are capable of remains unchanged. You are not defined by a hallmark in your career or how many people care about what you have to say. One day you can feel desperate and alone and five or six years later, you might finally arrive to a place of hopefulness too. The never-ending inky darkness will subside and you’ll feel warmth and light and ease again. I hope it doesn’t take you as long as it did for me to open up to the potential of who you already are. I hope in the end you choose power, life, and this everlasting chance to become more yourself.

I’m back from a little hiatus! I wish I had a better excuse, but to be completely transparent, I just needed a bit of a breather. Now that I’ve taken some much-needed R&R, I’m feeling more inspired than ever. So it’s fitting to emerge back into this space with a classic: TT’s Top Three.

I’ve been fortunate enough to try so many fun things I have genuinely loved the past couple of months, so I’m excited to share them all. Let’s get into the favorites!

1. Frank Green Stainless Steel Water Bottle in “chrome” with “chocolate” accessories: I saw this water bottle on TikTok and knew I needed to have it. I don’t know about you guys, but I feel mildly embarrassed carrying around my Stanley with the mania that has been ensuing (if you love your Stanley, do you for real!) This just feels like a chic alternative. I never knew I could love a water bottle more. The straw system is perfect and I’m a big fan of the stainless steel.

2. Element Brooklyn In Full Bloom Candle Refill: Another TikTok discovery (going to be infinitely less cool if they actually ban this app), Element creates the best candle and soap refills inspired by all your favorite designer fragrances, and the price is unbeatable. The “In Full Bloom” refill smells just like Diptyque’s Baies. I’ve also tried “Reading Room” which is in the style of Bibliothéque by Byredo. I have so many old Diptyque and Byredo candle vessels sitting around our home, and the Element refills fit perfectly inside of them, plus smell almost identical. Of all the items on the list, this might just be the very top of TT’s Top Three.

3. Omorovicza Body Serum: This summer, I’m prioritizing body care. When I say my legs had literal cracks on them after a long winter, I wish I were kidding. Thus, my post-shower routine has been extensive (I broke it down in detail on YouTube). I’ve been using a number of different body serums, but this one is luxe. The smell is gorgeous and I love knowing that it has the proprietary Healing Concentrate Omorovicza is known for.

4. Good Molecules Discoloration Body Cream: If you’re looking for something more cost-effective, I love the thickness of this discoloration body cream. It makes your skin so soft and I really do feel it’s evening out my complexion. The smell is whatever, so I’ll usually mix it with this True Botanicals Retinol Body Lotion, which I also love.

5. Dry-brushing: On the topic of body care, I’ve recently been back into dry-brushing. Aside from the lymphatic benefits, I love how exfoliating it is. It feels amazing and I just find it offers that extra “oomph” to help the layers of body products I’m using penetrate my skin even deeper. I don’t remember where I got my dry brush, but there are tons of great options on Amazon.

6. Jenny Bird Bangles: I have been a fan of Jenny Bird since college. A couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to attend a community dinner in Nashville with Jenny herself, and it was truly so special. What I loved most about the event was getting bracelets styled by Jenny. The three words I would use to describe her are artistic, warm, and chic. I’ve been wearing either my gold (Dane bangles and one Gia bangle) or silver (two Gia Mega bangles) stack every day since the event. They’re my new favorite everyday style staple. I didn't know I could love a set of bracelets so much.

7. Kiss New Naturals Lashes: It’s no secret the girlies have been cutting strip lashes in half to get a more natural effect for ages, but finally the brands have caught on to what the girlies want. I love how natural these lashes are; they’re my new go-to when I want to add a bit more drama to an evening makeup look.

8. Hit Me Hard & Soft by Billie Eilish: Admittedly, I loved Billie Eilish when she first emerged onto the music scene, but didn’t pay a whole lot of attention to her last album. My sister is a diehard Billie fan, so when Hit Me Hard & Soft was released, she prompted me to listen. I’m so glad she did! I love Billie’s voice and the idea that she creates music with her brother, who is equally as talented. The songs are really beautiful and I just think it’s well-done. “Birds of a Feather” has been the only song playing throughout my house for the last week.

9. Challengers: I am obsessed with this movie. The acting, the direction, the style, the complex characters. I love knowing that it’s written by Justin Kuritzkes who is partners with Celine Song who wrote and directed Past Lives which I also adored. What is seemingly a story about throuples and tennis, but is so much more, has me completely enthralled with the question: “What makes art impactful?” If you’ve seen it, leave a comment or DM me. 10. Elemense Incense: I stumbled across this incense at a Kado pop-up in New York last weekend at Colbo on Orchard St. I knew instantly it was special. I love how long it lasts and that the fragrances feel more than just smoky. You can tell each was intentionally crafted with care. My favorites are Tetsukon and Sekishin.

11. Innersense I Create Definition Styling Foam: I posted recently that since using Innersense, my hair is the healthiest it’s ever looked. I genuinely adore each product I own by Innersense, but for me the star is this “I Create Definition” styling foam. A little goes a long way, and it has a good amount of definition and hold without weighing your hair down. It’s confirmed what I have always suspected might be true: I’m a mousse girl.

12. Sandalwood Oil: You know my love for Nemat’s Amber Oil runs deep. In New York while at a small health food market near Chelsea, I discovered Sandalwood oil by the same brand. It’s been so lovely when mixing with my Molecule 04, and really helps my fragrance pack that woody punch I love.

13. PAVOI workout set: While I don’t want to speak too soon, this is arguably one of the best workout sets I’ve ever purchased from Amazon, or perhaps just in general. The fit is incredible, the fabric rivals that of Lululemon’s Align, but with added strength and support. I opted for the Low Support Bra with the Buttery Soft Leggings and I love them. Note: I recommend sizing down for a bit of added support.

14. CurrentBody Red Light Mask: After using my red light mask for a few months, the results are officially in: I love it. I have been wearing it almost once a night every night in tandem with a new skincare routine from the Acne Specialists of Nashville and attribute the combination to the clearing of my skin, this time, perhaps for good.

15. Citrus Riviera by BDK Parfums: In New York, I had the absolute pleasure of visiting the Scent Bar by Lucky Scent. Not to be cheesy, but it’s been a long-time dream of mine. I love following their TikTok, and seeing the employees IRL was like seeing my own version of a celebrity. The experience was even better than I could have anticipated. At one point, I nervously asked the gentleman who was helping me, “Am I making any sense?” (a question I also often ask my therapist which showcases my strong desire to ensure my intentions are clear), to which he replies, “Of course. We’re having a conversation.” And that’s all I needed to know. I left obsessed with four fragrances, but this spritz of European summer was the forerunner for the warmer days ahead, with L’Humaniste Extreme as a close second. I highly recommend picking up samples of each!

16. This dance: The way German Timothée Chalamet in the back dances scratches an itch in my brain I can’t explain.

I have to admit: when I wrote that letter on “5 Niche Perfume Brands I Really Want to Try”, I already had a bit of a bias. Don’t get me wrong, I love a household name when it comes to fragrance. Chanel No. 5 and Coco Mademoiselle are classics for a reason. But niche houses have always held a special place in my heart. It’s no secret it continues to be a growing category, so much so, that even the once niche houses aren’t so niche anymore. As much as we all want to smell undeniably intoxicating, there’s something particularly tantilizing about smelling ✨unlike everyone else✨. There’s a specific type of chill that comes over your body when it discovers a fragrance you can’t just scoop at your local Sephora. There’s time put into the curation, effort, and sampling that goes into adding the perfect one.

The five houses I recommended in my previous letter were admittedly a few I already had a sneaking suspicion I might love due to all of the buzz and excitement I’d been hearing from the peanut gallery on TikTok and the rest of the Internet. When I finally got my hands on a few bottles to experience IRL, I must admit I was surprised, and perhaps not in the ways you may have expected. Let’s dive into the reviews.

Régime des Fleurs

Rating: 4/5 (★★★★☆)

EDPs I Sampled: Little Flower, Là-Bas, Falling Trees, Tears, Rock River Melody

Full-size Product I Added to My Collection: Tears, $240 (75ml)

Standout Qualities: Spot-on, almost photorealistic qualities of the vignettes each fragrance attempts to capture; packaging that elicits art on your shelves; wearable scents that are supremely special, but also universally loved.

I have to admit I’ve had a virtual crush on Régimes des Fleurs every since Rebecca from Nashville’s own The Green Ray announced she was carrying the line (Music City is starving for fragrance). At first glance, you have to wonder if it’s just another pretty face. With luxurious glass bottles that look like handheld pieces of art with round tops and delicate, crest-like labels, there’s no denying Régimes des Fleurs is beautiful. Upon deeper investigation, however, one uncovers the line is founded by unquestionably stylish Alia Raza, with fragrances created in collaboration with giants of the craft such as Dominique Ropion and icons like Chloe Sevigny. Suddenly what seemed too good to be true begins to coalesce with other elements of the brand in a beautiful dance of thoughtful choices, and you realize you may have just stumbled across a true masterpiece of our time.

I mean it when I say I loved every fragrance I sampled from Régimes des Fleurs, which is why I think it’s perfect for niche lovers, but universal enough to be widely adored too. In the end, I opted to add a full-size bottle of one of the line’s bestsellers, Tears, because I was so curious how one might capture and bottle the essence of sadness—the heartache, catharsis, and nostalgia. But if there’s one thing about RDF I’ve learned, it’s not to doubt the intentionality behind what they do. The brand did, in fact, manage to create a very sad scent, and somehow also have it wear very beautifully. This epitomizes the core of the brand to a tee as told in their own words: disruptive and iconoclastic. If you have friends who love fragrance, any EDP from the line would make such a thoughtful and elevated gift. The price point is certainly on the more luxurious end, even for niche and especially for the amount of product you receive, so I would recommend the discovery set before you make any firm commitments. My only complaint is that I wish the fragrances lasted longer.

Snif

Rating: 2/5 (★★☆☆☆)

Products I Sampled: Golden Ticket, Off The Grid (candle), Sweet Ash (candle)

Price Point: $65 (30ml fragrance), $46 (8.5 oz candle)

Standout Qualities: A try-before-you-buy system that isn’t without kinks, but makes it easier to test scents before you commit; friendly price point for accessibility into the world of niche; a modern, trend-forward brand looking to shake up the industry

Snif was another house I found myself excited to try due to all of the excellent reviews on TikTok. I should have known an app catered heavily to a younger following would produce a lot of hype around a trendier brand. Don’t get me wrong: I like Snif. And I think the brand does a lot of things right, especially for a newer company entering a category with so much longstanding historic tradition. But when placed against some of the other houses in this review, I can’t quite say it had everything I personally look for when it comes to a standout niche fragrance house.

Let’s start with what I like: The branding is well-done. It’s minimalistic, but curated and reminds me of the younger, Gen Z sister of some of the other houses on the list. I also think it’s priced correctly. It’s not as wallet-friendly as something like Fine’ry, but I also think the quality of the product is more elevated. Snif also has a great try-before-you-buy system, where they include smaller samples in your order to burn and wear before committing. Thus, you only pay for what you keep. Of everything I tested, I really did enjoy the candles, especially Off The Grid, and think they’re a good bang for your buck. I also think the younger demographic in your life would think Snif is really cool. The brand is innovative, but I don’t think it’s catered toward the more sophisticated fragrance lovers of the world. To me, both the brand and the scents it produces feel a bit more entry-level when put up against some of these other houses and mavens in the industry.

Fine’ry

Rating: 2/5 (★★☆☆☆)

EDPs I Sampled: I’m A Musk, Not Another Cherry, Sweet On The Outside, Without A Trace

Standout Qualities: Price per milliliter is unmatched; Lands pretty closely to the fragrances it’s trying to emulate; convenience

I, as much as anyone else, recognize the world of niche fragrance can get wildly expensive. Therefore I’m always interested in “dupes” or options that smell like their more expensive counterparts for a fraction of the cost. I may have high standards, but I can also be practical. That’s precisely why Fine’ry piqued my interest in the first place. While other brands might try to conceal their motives, Fine’ry almost blatantly declares, “We’re trying to give you a more affordable option of all those expensive fragrances you love!” And if that’s what you’re looking for, I think they do a good job.

To give you a tangible example, Another 13 is one of my favorite fragrances from the house Le Labo. But when it came time to restock this mainstay in my collection, I gritted my teeth looking at the $230 price tag in comparison to the $30 one offered for .32oz more product by Fine’ry. So I succumbed and popped into my nearest Target to buy the clearly cheaper option. Much to my surprise: it’s dangerously close. Not exact, which I speak to a lot in other videos on the Internet, but close enough to justify saving $200. Will I still restock Another 13? Absolutely; it’s that special and while the two are similar, they are not the same. As I bide my time, Fine’ry makes it easy to “get the feel” of some popular fragrances for a fraction of the cost (although not as easy as one might think because like so many other popular items on TikTok, the Internet has caught wind and the aisles often look ravaged by doomsday-preppers in the wake of an apocalypse). The staying power and sillage are almost non-existent, but that might just be a conversation for another day.

Of all the houses I spoke to in my previous letter, Maison Crivelli may just be the one I was most intrigued by. Partly because I was introduced to the brand by a fragrance reviewer I trust and respect that stated Iris Malikhân smelled like “generational wealth”, but perhaps even more so because while the brand hasn’t been around long (having been founded in 2018 by Thibaud Crivelli), its roots are in the sensorial experience and have an appreciation for the energy of fragrance. Crivelli understands that perfume isn’t just about smell, but all the other senses too. And it’s really apparent when you see products in their roster modeled after the scent the Milky Way and shooting stars, or a walking safari.

Maison Crivelli is special. I knew it from the moment I first raised Iris Malikhân to my nose. Iris, which can sometimes feel powdery and dated, is inviting and surprisingly almost vegetal at first sniff. When paired with vanilla and leather, the story is enigmatic and intoxicating. Each fragrance I sampled from the line was so thoughtful, and there’s something about this house that gives you the firm body-knowing that no detail was spared (perhaps because they concoct each of their creations without a time limit). What’s more, each scent lasts all evening and into the next day, giving that wow-factor I think we all crave in our collection.

Over the past few years of attempting to return my truest version of self, one topic that has floated to the forefront of conversation (between me, myself, and I) has been my style. While I was struggling to regain a sense of autonomy over big life lessons like personal boundaries and career decisions, what I wore every day surprisingly became more and more intuitive. I guess when you’re dealing with such rigid (albeit perceived) social rules, what you wear every day can often become your only sense of foundation and freedom, at least it was for me.

And because tapping into my authentic style came more easily than other forms of self-expression, I’ve been able to witness firsthand so much of the bona fide fabric that makes up my style (pun intended). The most obvious component being the fact that I love a good staple / basic. There’s something about having all the foundational elements covered in the most spot-on way that makes getting dressed so fluid, not to mention timeless. I can’t help but feel the undeniable buzz reading “100% cotton” on a garment tag or seeing a crisp white tee hanging in-store. It’s a very specific kind of high.

For all of you who also experience this particular excitement, I’ve compiled a list of what I believe to be five tried-and-true closet staples to make any outfit chic n’ easy, along with five simple outfits I’ve loved putting together because of I had said staple pieces in my wardrobe. 1. A Good (Likely White) Tee

A good tee is something I wear nearly every day. There’s something about getting the proportions just right that tickles a specific part of your brain. Wear it on its own with classic denim, under a sweater for additional warmth, or dress it up for an effortless date-night look (which is what I did here!) Some of my favorites are from Brandy Melville (although annoyingly not size inclusive), COS, Michael Stars, and most recently La Ligne. I’ve been thinking about doing a perfect white tee letter cataloging the best of the best when it comes to fit, crop, and more. Let me know if this is something you’d want to see!

2. Good Denim

I definitely mean jeans. I personally don’t think anything comes close to a great pair of vintage Levi’s (preferably 501, 505, or 550s), but there are some styles (like these Ayla’s by Citizens of Humanity) that come really close. If you’re searching for vintage outside of your local thrift, I love eBay and Jeaniu Shop. Subrink Heyink has a great newsletter on vintage jeans (part 1 and part 2). I also think included in this category should be a great denim button-down or jacket. The one I’m wearing in the photo is from Ami sourced from my husband’s closet, but you can find tons of great options at various price points. I really like this option from AGOLDE too!

3. A Good Blazer

I will always be a fan of any varietal of good jacket, but there’s something about a great blazer that is timeless for a reason. I should mention that a lot of these closet staples can be thrifted or sourced secondhand with a bit of patience, as was the case with the blazer in the photo (Did you see I’m also sporting #1 and #2, along with another closet staple not on this list, but absolutely worth mentioning: good loafers?) I really think blazers and their fit are up to your preference, but I always think Zara (I know, I know) and COS do a good job at creating good silhouettes at a good price point. There’s also everyone’s favorite the Frankie Shop, although I think it’s a bit overpriced. But really guys, check your local thrifts! They’re crawling with blazers that are made from great, long-lasting materials.

4. A Good Button-Down

I wear a button-up with truly everything and in every way you could possibly imagine: as a swimsuit cover-up, as an added layer of warmth, on it’s own, you name it. And I say having a good option in your wardrobe is a MUST! I sound like a broken record at this point, but thrift these from the men’s section (I like the Brook’s Brothers brand). They have the best fits and can usually be found for $7 or less. If you’re absolutely keen on buying new, buy from the men’s section and check the labels for synthetic materials. I like to turn to COS because they have blazers made with 100% organic cotton. But Uniqlo (super wallet-friendly) and Mango have great options as well. If you’re wondering about what color to buy, I get the most wear out of my white and light-blue striped button-downs. Random side-bar: To anyone that asks where I get my gold jewelry like my horseshoe necklace, this is the place: New Top Jewelry in New York. They have a What’s App number and will also ship things directly to you if you ask.

5. A Good Breezy Bottom

Okay, this one’s a bit of a hot take, but as the temperatures rise, there is nothing like an easy staple bottom to make getting dressed breezy and fun! We all know I love this dress-made-skirt I wore to the absolute ground last summer. There are tons of other (actual skirt) options on the internet, including this one from Uniqlo that looks nearly identical! I saw one at Aritzia recently that also looked close. But let’s not count linen (or other breezy pants) out! The ones in this image are thrifted, but from L.L. Bean and still sold in similar styles today. I also have a pair from H&M (sold out, but they have tons of similar styles) without pockets that I absolutely adore!

It’s that time again! Arguably my favorite series: Tt’s Top Three, where I share everything I’ve loved from the previous month. This feels like such a nod to the YouTube videos of the twenty-teens, but I think there’s a reason people keep sharing favorites. I know I personally want to see what others are loving. So alas! I keep sharing. This month feels particularly exciting because I’ve tried so many things I genuinely love and adore. And while I definitely share more than three items, only the best of the best make the list. I’ll try to keep it as brief as I can. Let’s get into it.

1. Silver Spiral Earrings: I love these earrings. You love these earrings. I received the tip from Courtney Grow, whose style and taste I admire tremendously, and haven’t looked back.

2. Je Suis Le Plus Grand M.A. by D’Orsay: It’s an exciting day when I get to add new fragrances to my collection, for if the cheap thrill of thrifting and vintage shoes and handbags are my most steady addictions, fragrance was always my first love. It’s no secret I love a skin scent. I wear one as a base every single day and usually layer other fun things on top. Je Suis Le Plus Grand M.A. by D’Orsay is what I wish I smelled like naturally. It’s everything I love in a fragrance: it’s a little woody mixed with aldehydes for a fresh wear, but the iris and violet make it sparkle with the carefree abandon of beginning to fall in love.

3. Iris Malikhan by Maison Crivelli: My other favorite fragrance for the month lives on the other end of the spectrum. Where M.A. is an everyday wear, I described Iris Malikhan in a recent YouTube video as the precise moment in-between laying in the sun all day on a European vacation and getting ready for a romantic evening dinner, a kiss on the backside of your shoulder. It opens slightly earthy, but softens to buttery iris and orris and feels enigmatic and leathery when it dries. It’s warm, mysterious, and oh so lovely.

4. This particular video of the CDK Company’s performance to “Somebody That I Used to Know”: I have a little TikTok folder called “Videos I Like” reserved specifically for content that gives me this certain type of feeling. I equate it to when you’re a kid and you become full-blown obsessed with a song or a person or a movie, and it slowly begins to morph into your personality. That is this performance for me. The entire performance is definitely worth a watch, but the passion that Sir Sweater Vest delivers carries the entire thing for me. Of course I found out later that CDK Company choreographed Troye Sivan’s latest music videos for Rush and Got Me Started.

5. La Ligne Nina Pant: This isn’t a style I typically go for, but something about these pants feels put together while being effortless at the same time. They’re a bit of an investment, but you’ll always want to keep in your closet. You can see how I styled them here.

6. Coconut Water Matcha Lattes: I saw Rachael Kirkconnell make her matcha latte this way, and I have never looked back.

7. Osea Algae Body Oil: When polling Instagram for your favorite products recently, someone mentioned the Osea Algae Body Oil, and I absolutely get it! The smell. The hydration. It’s next level. I also really love the Anti-Aging Body Balm and Algae Body Butter.

8. Eternal Sunshine by Ariana Grande: I feel like I’ve talked about this album ad nauseam, but it’s because it’s so good. It’s everything I want from Ariana and more: raw honesty, beautiful storytelling, wrapped in catchy, beautiful melodies. I’m ready for her to announce her tour!

9. Sunday Riley Auto Correct Eye Cream: I’ve been on the hunt for an eye cream that’s hydrating, but not too rich for the daytime. When I put this on I saw a visible difference in the brightness and evenness of my under-eye area, so much so that I had to do a double-take. Plus, it’s the perfect consistency!

10. Move with Nicole At-Home Pilates Videos: Since training for a half-marathon, I’ve been looking for more convenient solutions to work in the kind of strength-training that promotes long, lean muscles. I gave FORM by Sami Clarke a try, but it didn’t feel worth the price for me. I was doing some research and so many people recommended the free library of at-home pilates videos from Move With Nicole. I’ve tried a few now and they are all so good!

A few weeks back, I opened up the floor on both Instagram and Substack to get your opinions on the best of the best when it comes to all things beauty devices, treatments, and more—essentially anything to enhance your routine. While the participation wasn’t as hot as I would’ve preferred (at this point, I’m practically begging for you to pipe in for future letters), those of you who did respond (thank you! ily!) were passionate about your takes, and together, we’ve gathered some really great intel. Let’s dive in!

Beauty Devices

Red Light LED Masks: When polling the group, most said they didn’t own two of the most buzzed about products on the market, the first being a red-light LED mask. However, of those that said they owned the device, 70% declared it was an essential. Experts say red light therapy can be a helpful preventative skincare tool, with claims that regular 10-15 minute sessions help boost collagen, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, improve tissue repair, even your skin texture and tone, dilate your blood vessels to increase circulation, and more. Something to note: You want the wavelength of your device to be at least 630 nanometers for an effective treatment. For this category, I opted to go with the brand that had the most votes: CurrentBody ($380). It has a wavelength of 633 nanometers and comes highly reviewed! I will report back with an in-depth review along with before and afters in an upcoming follow-up letter, but for now both Sam and I are loving adding it to our routine.

Microcurrent Devices: The other tool I’ve been really curious about is a microcurrent device. While the red light masks offer more long-term effects, microcurrent devices are said to give more immediate results to firm the skin, de-puff, contour the face, decrease wrinkles and more. Of those who owned a microcurrent device, again a little over 69% said it’s worth it! What’s more, a resounding number of you said you preferred ZIIP Beauty over something like a NuFace because it has both microcurrent and nanocurrent waves, which are supposed to penetrate the skin deeper to produce more collagen and elastin, offering longer term results. I’ve also decided to give this a try after so many of you recommended it and will follow up with a more extensive review.

Laser Hair Removal: Another treatment that was mentioned time and time again is laser hair removal, with many of you saying it is worth every penny and you cannot live without it. While the treatments can be costly, more and more options have become available on the market. I recently watched this TikTok of a creator who had great laser hair removal results with a $90 device (currently on sale for $70!) at home. I cannot speak personally to the efficacy (yet!) or safety (important!) of such a device, but I am giving it a try and will report back.

Beauty Treatments

Botox: Almost every person who responded said Botox is 100% worth it. I can’t help but agree. I get ~26 units of botox once a quarter and I feel it makes a world of difference! My skin appears smoother, firmer, and dare I say clearer? Those who routinely get botox or other cosmetic injections like Dysport and also have micorcurrent devices do warn to be wary, however, as microcurrent devices may reverse some of the effects. Best to check with your licensed estheticians before diving into any and all of these devices and treatments.

Lasers: Another resounding “yes!” from the group was lasers. The most popular being: BBL and Moxie, with an honorable mention for Genesis. Overall, lasers are supposed to be effective for a myriad of skin concerns including, but not limited to: treating hyperpigmentation, acne (and acne scars), brightening and evening the complexion, fine lines and wrinkles, rosacea, improving signs of aging over time and more. I’ve personally done a few BBL laser sessions in the past, and loved my results (at first!) One time the practitioner went a little too intense and actually burned my skin. I had scabs for weeks! So while I love lasers and it sounds as though they could be a great addition to your routine, I would definitely enlist the work of a practitioner you trust and ask lots of questions before deciding to indulge in any of these treatments, especially if you have a deeper complexion like I do.

Microneedling: Another full-send from the group was microneedling, which uses thin needles the puncture the top layer of the skin. This is supposed to help expedite your skin’s healing process, so you produce more collagen and elastin. I did three rounds of microneedling last year with Complexion here in Nashville and absolutely loved it! I look back on photos and I definitely feel the most clear, bright, and even I have in years.

Other Honorable Mentions: Upper Blethoplasty, which I’ve heard is one of the most underrated cosmetic procedures. I am also curious about Sculptra, but a few of you said not to give it a go!

The long and short of this letter is that there are a myriad of options when it comes to beauty treatments and devices on the market. What you decide to add to your routine (or not!) is 100% up to you and what feels most aligned for your lifestyle, ethos, and budget. I’m here to promote going with what intuitively feels right, but hopefully, this letter has offered a bit more clarity on what others are loving and incorporating into their routines, so you can make an even more informed decision.
