It was a simple (and not very well done!) illustration. A woman and a large stone, in six different settings. In the first she is lying underneath it. Then she is dragging it behind her on ropes. Then examining it with a magnifying glass. Then sitting beside it reading. Then leaning over it hugging it. And in the last one she has a chisel and she is carving a face out of it.

Suffered. Carried. Analysed. Learned from. Accepted. Transformed.

Many people saw themselves in it immediately the same way I did, which is the whole reason I shared it. Most of us are walking round with a stone and but don’t really have a way to explain what we are doing with it.

I have been thinking about it, and I have come to see that the description is really good. It’s not quite accurate though. There’s a bit missing.

Six pictures, ending with the woman as a sculptor. Read it once and you get the idea that these are steps, and that you climb them, and that this is the process you should travel in.

That is not exactly how it went for me and from most of the comments, it hasn’t gone that way for others either.

You can be in several of the stages all at once. I have sat down at my desk in the morning perfectly accepting of something and been crushed by the same thing by the afternoon. I have understood something completely, in the analytical sense, for years, whilst still actually lying underneath it.

Understanding is not a stage you pass through on your way to peace. You can know exactly why something happened, be able to explain it to another person, but still not be able to sleep.

Carrying

If I had to choose one that took me the longest to get through, it would probably be carrying.

Not even the dramatic version. But rather the version where you attached the ropes so competently that nobody (not even you) can see that you are dragging anything at all.

I carried what happened in my childhood. I carried the years inside a religion that told me what to think, and I carried leaving it, which cost me my mother and my brother, who no longer speak to me. And for a long time I carried the marriage, or rather I carried the parts of it that were not right, telling myself for years that this was simply what a long marriage morphed into.

That is the thing about carrying. It doesn’t feel like a stage you’re in. It feels like reality.

You are not in denial. You have decided, without even thinking about it, that this is just how life is. You tell yourself that other people are carrying something similar and simply not mentioning it either.

I was so good at it. Years of practice. If you had asked me at any point I would have told you I was fine, and I would not even have been lying. I had to convince myself that it was the truth to be able to to keep walking.

The problem with carrying is that it works. That is why people stay there. It is not a failure state, it is a functioning one. The only thing wrong with it is the cost, which by the way, you don’t notice because it happens gradually.

Acceptance

Everything before acceptance I could do while still fighting. Suffering, carrying, analysing, even learning. All of those can be done even while a part of you knows that it should not have happened.

Acceptance meant putting the argument down.

I do want to make a point here about acceptance. It is definitely not approval. It is definitely not deciding that what happened was acceptable, or that everyone did their best, or that it was all for a purpose.

It’s more like this: It happened. It is not going to unhappen.

The version of my life where it did not happen is not available and no amount of me being right about it will make it available.

That took many years. And I couldn’t move forward until I got to that stage, which is why I would put acceptance at the centre of that picture rather than near the end. It all hinges on that. Everything before it is management and it makes everything after it possible.

Transformation

It is a beautiful idea and I get why it is the last image. But.. it could be interpreted to mean that the worst thing that happened to you can become the thing you are known for. For some people that is exactly true. It is true of parts of my own life. I write about rebuilding because I had to rebuild, and I would not be doing what I do otherwise.

But to see it as an ending it puts pressure on someone that I don’t think they necessarily have to carry.

Because it implies that the job isn’t finished until you have made something out of it. That the stone owes you a return. That if you are not producing meaning from the worst thing that has happened to you, you are still somewhere back in the middle images, behind.

Not everything can be used. Some things are not raw material.

There are parts of my life that have made me useful to other people, and I am grateful for that. And there are also parts that have given me nothing at all, that I have examined and found no lesson, and that I have simply had to let go and walk away from.

If I were drawing that picture, the last panel would not be a sculptor.

It would be a woman walking away, and the stone still on the ground where she left it.

Letting Go

Letting go is a harder thing to illustrate. There is nothing to look at. No product, no evidence, nothing to hold up.

It is also unsatisfying in a way our culture struggles with. We very much want the redemption ending. We want the thing to have been worth it.

A woman who says I thought about this for years and got nothing from it and eventually left it behind is not a story anybody puts on a poster.

But it really is the more honest ending, the most useful.

The difference between the two is this: Transforming something means you are still holding it. You have changed its shape, and it is now useful, and it is still in your hands. Letting go means you are not holding it at all.

Both are fine. What is not fine is thinking that only one of them is important.

And You Go Backwards

The other thing the picture can’t show is that none of this is permanent. Or linear.

I still get knocked back. For a long time it was dates, and music, which is the worst of them because often it’s unplanned, unexpected, in a shop or a car.

Now it tends to be something on television. A father and daughter having a moment I never had, and did not know I minded about until it was in front of me. Or a family in a restaurant, all of them there, close and easy with each other, and the recognition that mine is not like that. Not the one I came from and not the one I built and lost.

That can take me from something like peace to something a lot sadder in seconds.

It used to bother me, because I looked at it as going back, that I wasn’t doing things right. I don’t see it that way now. It is not a relapse and it is not a return to the beginning. It is grief doing what grief does, which is to come and go rather than to end.

The difference is not that it stopped happening. The difference is how I deal with the thoughts. It used to bring me down for days, sometimes longer. Now I acknowledge it, allow myself to feel any feeling that arises and accept it. Then let it go.

Final Musings

The picture is worth looking at. It gave a lot of people, including me, a way of describing something they had not been able to name, and that is not nothing.

I would just take the sequence, the ladder, out of it.

You are not climbing. You are moving around inside those six states, sometimes several at once, going forwards and backwards for years. The direction is not the point.

Also you are not obliged to make anything out of what happened to you.

If you can, and you want to, that is a fine thing to do. If you cannot, or the thing simply doesn’t contain anything worth having, then you are allowed to set it down in the road and keep walking, and that’s just as important too.

That is the image I’d put on the end.

Eating. Sleeping. Concentrating. Getting through a day without thinking about what happened. Your mind may keep returning to the same conversations and questions while another part of you is simply exhausted by it all.

Instead, we’ll make the world smaller for a while: this breath, this moment, this day.

Because sometimes healing after a breakup begins with something much simpler than moving on.

Sometimes it begins with taking care of yourself while your heart catches up with everything that has changed.

1. What feels hardest about the loss right now? Not what I think should be hardest, but what actually is?

2. What am I missing besides the person themselves, the routines, plans, companionship, security, identity or future I imagined?

3. What questions am I repeatedly trying to answer that I may need to put down, just for today?

4. What am I expecting from myself right now that I wouldn’t expect from someone I loved who was going through the same heartbreak?

5. What is one small thing I can do to take care of myself today, without worrying about tomorrow?

I sat down on a large smooth rock with my journal on my knees, which is what I do most mornings wherever I happen to be. He took his shoes off and walked down to the waterline.

I looked up.

Something in me went very still. My arms and legs prickled with goosebumps.

About three years ago, when my life was in pieces, I sat down and wrote a description of the life I wanted. Present tense, as though it had already happened, which is how I was told to do it. It felt a bit silly, but I was willing to try anything.

I don’t remember everything I wrote.

But I do remember describing a man walking along a beach beside me. Tall. Close cropped beard. A white linen shirt.

I hadn’t thought about that exercise I did in years. It wasn’t just writing it down, it involved recording me reading it and listening to it every day too. I remember being able to see this man clearly in my mind, to imagine my life with him.

And then there he was, in front of me, at the edge of the sea, wearing the shirt. No wonder I got goosebumps.

I sat on that rock just watching him walk down the beach. Almost crying, with the amazement of it. Doing the math. Working out how long he had been in my life. Realising we had walked on a beach together before, lots of times, and I had never made the connection.

I had been living inside a page I wrote when I had nothing, and I had not noticed.

That is the part I keep thinking about. Not just that it came true. That it came true and I was too busy living in it to notice.

There is an older one, and it matters in a different way. It was from when my marriage was ending, in an apartment in Thailand where I was ill with the stress of it, feeling more desperate than I’ve ever felt. I held a picture in my head. Sitting at home in France in front of my log fire with a glass of wine, feeling calm. That was the whole thing. No revenge, no rescue, no big fancy house. Just a fire and the absence of that tightness in my chest.

I have now done that. Lit the fire late October, poured the wine, sat down.

I’d done it many times before it hit me. This is exactly the thing I asked for when I could not see a way out.

Nobody warns you that arriving is this quiet. You brace yourself for a moment, a door you walk through, some clear line between before and after. OK, now I can heal and start again. What you actually get is an ordinary evening that you do not register as the answer to anything, because by the time it turns up you have stopped checking.

I think that is why many readers write to me saying they are still waiting, it hasn’t happened, when in reality they have already got there. They asked for something three years ago, received it, adapted to it, but didn’t really see it for what it was, and are now measuring their life against a standard that has moved.

We get used to our own progress at an alarming speed. We forget.

So this is what I would advise, and it takes about 15-20 minutes.

Write down what you want your ordinary day to look like. Not just big achievements and goals. The Tuesday, the Wednesday, the Saturday. What you can see out of the window, whether the house is quiet, who is in it, how your chest feels at four in the afternoon.

Tip - Handwrite it in the present tense as if you are living it now

Be specific about the details, even the small ones, this is the important part. General things are easy to write and hard to recognise later. Calm is general. A log fire and a glass of wine is specific enough to spot when it arrives. A tall man is general. A white linen shirt and a close cropped beard is not.

Date it. Read it each day or if you want to make it more powerful, listen to a recording of it. A few times every day. This part is vital. Without daily repetition, it doesn’t work.

If you have ever done something like this before, go and find it. Look in the old journals, the notes on your phone, the back of the diary from the year everything went wrong. Read what you asked for when you had nothing.

You may be surprised by what you have already received and not really noticed.

If you are struggling to start, you can use these questions to help you:

Where are you when you wake up, and what is the first thing you see?

Be exact. The colour of the walls, what is on the bedside table, which direction the light comes from. Not the house you think you should want. The room you actually want to open your eyes in.

What does your body feel like getting out of that bed?

This is the health question, asked in a way you can answer. Does your back hurt? Are you rested? Do you get up easily or do you sit on the edge for a minute first? Describe the body you want to be living in rather than the weight you want to be.

What are you doing at eleven in the morning, and who is paying you for it?

Eleven is the working hour. Say what is in front of you, whether you chose it, and whether the money side of it is settled enough that you are not thinking about money whilst you do it. That last part is the honest version of the finances question.

Who is in the house, and who is not?

Uncomfortable and the most useful. Say who is there, what they are doing, whether they are speaking to you. Then say who is not there, because who you leave out is information.

What does your chest feel like at four in the afternoon?

Four o’clock is the honest hour. Too late to be running on the morning, too early to be finished. Describe what is happening in your body then, and notice whether you can picture it at all.

What can you hear?

Sound is the detail almost nobody writes down and the one that dates a life most precisely. If the answer is silence, say what kind. There is a silence that is peaceful and a silence that means you are alone in a house you did not choose.

3. How has my grief been showing up lately, emotionally, physically or in the small moments of everyday life?

4. What expectations have I placed on myself about how I “should” be coping, and what would it feel like to release one of them?

5. What would being especially gentle with myself look like today, not forever, just today?

I questioned my relationship with the most amazing man I’ve ever known, not because I wasn’t happy, or because I doubted how I felt. Quite the opposite. I realised that someone had become part of my everyday life, and for a fleeting moment, that worried me. Not because I was afraid of loving again, but because I’d finally built a life I loved.

It’s a strange thing to admit.

After heartbreak, we assume the biggest hurdle will be trusting another person. We’re told we’ll be scared of commitment, frightened of getting hurt again, reluctant to let anyone close and that it will be impossible to fully trust again. Of course there’s some truth in that. But that’s not what surprised me most.

What surprised me was how fiercely protective I’d become of the life I’d rebuilt.

For years, my life revolved around someone else. Like many couples who spend decades together, we made decisions, planned the future and built routines as a team. I definitely don’t regret that, it was just how our life worked.

Until, it didn’t.

What came next wasn’t just heartbreak. It was years of putting myself back together, learning what made me happy, discovering that I loved quiet, slow mornings with a cup of tea and my journal, writing my thoughts down before the day properly begins, then spending at least an hour practicing yoga and meditating. Or walking through the forest when I need to clear my head, cooking just because I enjoy it, finding peace in my own company.

Somewhere along the way, something had shifted. I stopped waiting for my old life to return. I fell in love with the one I was living.

When you’ve worked hard to create a peaceful life, letting someone into it can feel surprisingly vulnerable. Not because they’re asking you to give anything up, but because you suddenly realise how much you have to lose: your quiet, your routines, your independence, the little rituals that helped you become yourself again.

I wondered if that hesitation meant I wasn’t ready, or that I was still carrying old fears, or that my heart hadn’t healed as much as I’d thought.

But the more I thought about it, the more I realised what it was. I wasn’t protecting myself from love. I was protecting the woman I’d become. I think that’s a huge difference.

I’ve realised that love in midlife asks different questions. When we’re younger, we often wonder, “Will they choose me?” Later in life, another question joins it: “Can I stay myself if they do?”

I don’t think that’s cynicism. I think it’s wisdom, we’ve learnt that love should never require us to disappear.

The irony is that the very things we’re trying to protect are often the things another person falls in love with in the first place: your kindness, your independence, your passions, the way you’ve rebuilt your life, your resilience. Why would healthy love ask you to leave those behind?

These days, I don’t believe the goal is to love the way I did in my twenties. Back then, I probably would have rearranged my whole life without thinking twice. Now, I want something different: a relationship where two whole people walk beside each other, each with our own interests, our own friendships, our own quiet moments. Where love adds to our lives rather than replacing them, and coming together never means losing ourselves.

Maybe that’s one of the unexpected gifts of finding love later in life. We stop looking for someone to complete us. Instead, we hope to find someone who appreciates the life we’ve already built and wants to become part of it.

I don’t think I’d have understood that at thirty.

Back then I’d have taken it as a sign that something was missing. That I wasn’t in deep enough, or brave enough, or in love enough to let go of everything and start again.

Now I know what it actually is. It’s the sound of a woman who has somewhere to come home to, and has no intention of giving it up.

That isn’t fear. That’s just knowing what things cost.

It’s about the part that comes after surviving.

There’s a great deal written about the leaving. The crisis, the ending, the moment it all falls apart. Far less about the year that follows, when you’re technically fine, when everyone has stopped asking how you are, and you’re quietly working out what you actually want and how to decide anything at all without checking it with someone first.

That was the part I found with the least advice. So that’s the part I write about.

I’m 57. My marriage of 34 years ended in betrayal, and before that I left a faith and a community that cost me most of my friends and most of my family. I came out the other side, which I wasn’t really sure I would do.

What surprised me was how ordinary the rebuilding turned out to be. Not easy, just not very dramatic.

Booking the car in for a service, which I had never once done in my life. Choosing new windows for the house and paying for them myself.

Standing in the quiet after the fitter had driven away, looking at what I’d sorted out on my own, and feeling something close to pride for the first time in years.

Nobody tells you that’s what it looks like. They tell you about the big moments. Mine arrived on ordinary afternoons and I nearly missed them.

I always thought I was good at relationships.

I could sense when someone’s mood had changed before they said a word. I knew when to stay quiet, when to soften an opinion and when to put my own feelings aside because somebody else seemed to need more from me.

I was understanding, accommodating, loyal, even when loyalty cost me far more than I admitted.

I believed this was what loving someone looked like. And it took the end of my marriage for me to see how often I had confused love with making myself easier to live with.

I had spent years learning to read other people whilst losing touch with myself. What did I need? What did I want? What was I tired of pretending didn’t hurt? Those questions became surprisingly difficult to answer.

I had become so used to considering everyone else first that my own feelings seemed inconvenient. I could justify somebody else’s behaviour for hours, yet struggle to give myself permission to say, ‘This isn’t working for me’. I didn’t realise how much of myself I had silenced.

I worried about being too emotional or too ambitious. I didn’t want to outshine my husband or create discomfort by taking up more space. So over many years, I held things back, asked for less, and accepted emotional loneliness because I thought a lasting relationship required sacrifice.

By the time my marriage ended, I was exhausted. The betrayal was painful, of course. But one of the hardest things to face was how lonely I realised I’d been for years. I had been keeping the peace in a relationship where I no longer felt completely present.

When keeping the peace costs you yourself

Self-abandonment doesn’t always look dramatic. Sometimes it looks like saying, ‘It’s fine’, when it isn’t. It can be agreeing because you don’t have the energy for the reaction your honest answer might cause, apologising for having a need, or accepting an explanation that leaves you confused because asking another question feels too risky.

You tell yourself you’re choosing your battles, being mature, trying to make the relationship work. And sometimes you are, relationships need patience and compromise. But compromise becomes something else when it’s the same person making the sacrifice all the time.

I used to think endurance proved the depth of my love. My body was telling me otherwise: anxiety I couldn’t explain away, tension I’d learnt to live with, a constant tiredness that came from carrying too much of the emotional responsibility.

I kept ignoring those feelings because acknowledging them would have required me to face what I definitely wasn’t ready to face. The relationship didn’t feel safe for all of me, only the agreeable version, the woman who could cope, the version who didn’t ask for too much.

Why choosing yourself can feel frightening

When you’ve learnt that love depends on being agreeable, choosing yourself can feel dangerous, scary. You worry that a boundary will push someone away, that you’ll be described as selfish, difficult or changed.

And perhaps you have. Perhaps you’re tired of swallowing words to keep other people comfortable, or beginning to notice how much energy it takes to be liked by people who only seem happy with you when you agree with them.

The first boundaries I set didn’t make me feel strong. They made me feel guilty. I would replay conversations afterwards, wondering whether I had been unreasonable, wanting to explain myself more clearly, soften what I’d said, or rush back in and make everything comfortable again.

That discomfort didn’t mean the boundary was wrong. It meant I was doing something unfamiliar.

For most of my life, I had used other people’s reactions to decide whether I was allowed to trust myself. If they were upset, I assumed I had done something wrong. Learning to pause changed that.

Before agreeing, apologising or rushing to fix something, I began asking myself what I actually wanted, what I would say if I wasn’t afraid of disappointing anyone, whether I was about to abandon myself just to avoid an uncomfortable conversation.

At first, the answers were faint. But the more often I listened, the clearer they became.

The small choices that helped me trust myself again

There wasn’t one brave decision that changed everything. My self-trust returned through ordinary moments: saying no to things I didn’t want to do, no longer giving long explanations for simple boundaries (or in some cases, no explanation at all), paying attention when I felt drained after spending time with someone, telling the truth sooner, before resentment had months or years to build.

Some people didn’t like it. That was painful, especially when I cared about them. But their disappointment no longer automatically meant I had made the wrong choice. This was a very difficult lesson for me to learn: somebody can be unhappy with your decision and your decision can still be right for you.

As I became more honest, my relationships began to change. Some grew closer because there was finally room for the real me. Others became more distant because the relationship had depended on me staying in my old role. Both outcomes taught me something: a relationship that can only survive whilst you remain silent isn’t offering the kind of connection you think you’re protecting.

Learning what healthy love feels like

When I began dating again later in life, I had different questions. I paid attention to whether somebody’s actions matched their words, noticed how I felt after spending time with them, and looked for the freedom to be myself without constantly monitoring their mood.

This changed what I found attractive. I had once mistaken emotional uncertainty for chemistry, waiting for a message, trying to interpret mixed signals, wondering where I stood could create a powerful pull. But that pull wasn’t usually love. More often it was anxiety asking me to earn reassurance.

The relationship I have now feels different. There’s definite attraction, but safety alongside it, consistency, and room for honest conversation. I don’t have to make myself smaller to protect it.

For the first time, I understand how much energy becomes available when you’re no longer using it to work out whether you’re loved.

Calm can feel unfamiliar when you’ve spent years associating love with emotional uncertainty. You may even wonder whether something is missing. Give yourself time, you may simply be experiencing affection without the fear you once believed had to accompany it.

A gentle relationship reset

If any of this feels familiar, you don’t need to examine your entire relationship history tonight. Just start with one honest observation.

Notice how your body feels around people - Pay attention to what happens before your mind starts explaining it away. Do your shoulders tighten when a particular person enters the room? Do you feel tired after every conversation? Can you speak freely, or are you continually editing yourself?

Your body won’t make every decision for you. But it can point towards something your mind has been working hard to dismiss.

Practise shorter answer - A boundary doesn’t need a courtroom defence. Try, ‘I can’t do that’, or, ‘That doesn’t work for me’. You may feel tempted to add several paragraphs, pause before you do. A respectful answer is enough, even when the other person would prefer a different one.

Watch what happens repeatedly - A loving apology matters. Changed behaviour matters more. Look at the pattern across time: do words and actions agree, can concerns be discussed, is responsibility shared? One beautiful conversation can’t repair a pattern that continues unchanged.

Find one place where you’re trying to earn love - Perhaps you’re always the one making contact or fixing the problem. Maybe you’re giving far more than you can afford because you fear what will happen if you stop. Ask yourself what you believe you have to do to remain loved, then ask whether the relationship allows you to be valued when you’re tired, quiet, unavailable or in need of support yourself.

Make room for your own life - Keep something that belongs only to you, your writing, a friendship, a walk you enjoy, an hour when you don’t have to consider anybody else’s needs. The more connected you are to your own life, the easier it becomes to recognise a relationship that asks you to leave too much of it behind.

Tell one small truth sooner - You don’t have to begin with the most difficult conversation. Say, ‘That hurt me’. Admit, ‘I don’t agree’. Ask for what you need before you’ve persuaded yourself it doesn’t matter. Each small truth teaches you that honesty doesn’t have to mean abandonment.

I don’t judge the woman I used to be for staying quiet. She had learnt that belonging could be withdrawn. She believed being good, useful and easy to love would keep her safe. Those habits helped her survive experiences she didn’t yet know how to leave.

But eventually, the same habits that once protected me began keeping me trapped. I couldn’t build honest relationships whilst hiding my honest self, and I couldn’t wait for somebody else to give me permission to matter.

My life began to change each time I stayed present with myself during an uncomfortable moment, resisted the urge to take back a boundary, and believed what I felt without needing somebody else to agree.

I was still me. But I was finally present in my own life.

And that’s what returning to yourself can look like: you stop disappearing to keep the connection, and you let love meet the person who is actually there.

What was right.

What was wrong.

At the time, I didn’t question it. Why would I? When you’re raised in a world where the rules are already written, you don’t spend much time wondering who wrote them.

You simply learn to follow them.

Then I got married.

We talked about everything. We made decisions together. We weighed up the pros and cons, discussed finances, planned holidays, talked through problems and imagined future together.

I don’t think there was anything unusual about that.

It’s what good partnerships do.

But now I can also see that it meant I moved from one way of making decisions straight into another.

First, I lived by a set of rules that had largely been decided for me.

Then I lived a life where almost every decision was shared.

It wasn’t until I found myself alone, for the first time, in my 50s, that I realised something that blew my mind once I noticed it.

I had very little experience of asking myself one simple question.

What do I think?

Not what should I think.

Not what would make other people happy.

Not what someone wiser, older or more experienced might choose.

Simply…

What do I think?

That question sounds so ordinary.

Yet it felt very unfamiliar.

When you’ve spent years believing the right answer exists somewhere outside yourself, it’s very hard to trust that your own thoughts might be enough.

After my marriage ended, I suddenly became the person making every decision.

Some were big and important.

Some weren’t.

What colour should I paint the walls in the guest room?

What should I buy in the supermarket?

Should I write this book?

Should I take this opportunity?

What kind of life do I actually want to create?

None of those decisions came with a rulebook.

There wasn’t a checklist.

The hardest one was, no one to discuss things with over dinner.

For the first time in my life, I realised that answers weren’t waiting to be discussed and discovered.

They were waiting to be chosen. By me!

And that was both rather scary and wonderfully liberating.

I’d spent so many years believing confidence came from knowing the right answer.

Instead, I discovered something much more important.

Confidence often begins when we give ourselves permission to ask the question we may have avoided for years.

Things didn’t magically change overnight once I’d realised this.

Learning to think for yourself isn’t something you decide to do one afternoon and that’s it, changed life. It’s something you practise. All the time.

For me, it wasn’t the big decisions that changed everything. It was the small ones.

Choosing a book because I wanted to read it.

Decorating my home because it made me feel peaceful, not because it matched someone else’s idea of good taste.

Buying clothes that I liked, without considering what anyone else may think.

Writing the articles I felt called to write, rather than the ones I thought people expected from me.

Slowly, I realised I wasn’t really learning how to make decisions.

I was learning how to trust myself.

If you’ve spent years living by other people’s rules, or always making decisions with someone else, your own voice can feel surprisingly unfamiliar.

You may even mistake that unfamiliar feeling for a sign that you’re making the wrong choice.

But they’re not the same thing.

Sometimes, what feels uncomfortable isn’t wrong.

It’s simply new.

Your mind has spent years looking outside itself for certainty. It makes sense that turning inwards would feel uncertain at first.

The important thing is not to wait until you feel completely confident.

Confidence rarely comes before the decision.

It comes afterwards.

It grows every time you make a choice, live with it, learn from it and realise that you survived. That you made a good choice.

You begin to discover that making a mistake doesn’t mean you can’t trust yourself. It just means you’re human.

If this is something you’re struggling with, don’t start with the biggest decision in your life.

Start with today’s.

Before you ask anyone else what they think, pause for a moment and ask yourself first.

Not because you’ll always have the perfect answer.

But because your own thoughts deserve to be heard.

The more often you listen to them, the easier they become to recognise.

Of course, I still value the opinions of people I love.

I still ask for advice.

I still appreciate a different perspective.

But there’s one important difference.

Their voices no longer replace my own.

I don’t think the greatest thing I learned after leaving my old life behind was how to make better decisions.

It was discovering that I was allowed to make them.

That I didn’t need permission to choose the direction of my own life.

That there wasn’t always one perfect answer waiting to be found.

Sometimes there was simply a choice.

And I was free to make it.

After years of following other people’s maps, there is something absolutely wonderful about picking up the pen and beginning to draw your own.

It may feel unfamiliar at first. Scary.

But it might also be the beginning of finally becoming the author of your own life.

I was making a cup of tea one morning, looking out of the kitchen window at the garden. Nothing unusual. The birds were making more noise than usual, the kettle had just boiled, and I remember thinking I should water the herbs later before the day became too warm.

Then, almost out of nowhere, a thought arrived.

I love my life.

Not I survived.

Not I’m getting through it.

Not I’m coping.

I genuinely loved the life I was living.

It caught me completely by surprise because there had been a time when I couldn’t imagine ever thinking those words again.

A few years earlier, my future had disappeared almost overnight.

For a long time afterwards, I thought healing meant finding my way back to the life I’d lost.

Back to the certainty.

Back to the plans.

Back to the person I used to be.

Without realising it, I’d spent months, perhaps years, looking over my shoulder.

Then that ordinary Tuesday morning arrived.

Nothing dramatic had changed.

But I had.

I wasn’t waiting anymore.

Not waiting for an apology.

Not waiting to feel like my old self again.

Not waiting for life to become what I’d imagined all those years before.

Somewhere along the way, I’d quietly started living instead.

I’ve been thinking about that a lot recently because I wonder how often we imagine healing as a destination.

We picture ourselves arriving there one day, finally free of sadness, finally certain, finally whole.

What if that’s not how it works?

What if healing isn’t an arrival at all?

What if it’s simply the gradual process of becoming interested in the life that’s unfolding instead of the one that never did?

Looking back, I don’t think there was one thing that changed me.

It was hundreds of tiny things.

Morning walks through the forest.

Books that challenged my thinking.

Writing pages that nobody else would ever read.

Meditation.

Conversations with good friends.

Growing herbs in the garden.

Learning to enjoy my own company.

None of them felt remarkable on their own.

Together, they quietly built a different life.

And perhaps that’s the part we don’t talk about enough.

Healing doesn’t usually announce itself.

It slips into ordinary moments.

You laugh without forcing it.

You make plans because you want to, not because you’re trying to distract yourself.

You notice you’re thinking about tomorrow more than yesterday.

You stop measuring your life against the one you thought you’d have.

One of my favourite quotes says:

“Healing is learning to belong to a life that no longer looks like the one you left.”

I don’t know who first wrote those words, but they stopped me in my tracks the first time I read them.

Because that’s exactly what it felt like.

Not getting my old life back.

Not replacing it.

Belonging to this one.

These days, I still have moments when memories appear unexpectedly.

A song.

A photograph.

An anniversary.

They still matter.

They always will.

But they no longer make me question whether I’m moving forwards.

They’re simply reminders of where I’ve been.

Not instructions about where I have to stay.

If you’re in the middle of a season that feels unfamiliar, perhaps this will encourage you.

You don’t have to force yourself to love the life you’re living today.

You don’t have to pretend everything is fine.

You certainly don’t have to rush your grief.

But don’t be surprised if, one ordinary morning, while making a cup of tea or walking the dog or hanging washing on the line, you suddenly realise something has shifted.

Not because life became perfect.

Because you’ve slowly become at home in it.

A Little Something I’ve Been Working On

This article touches on many of the themes that inspired my book, Quote Therapy.

Over the past year, I’ve completely rewritten and expanded the original 2024 edition. Because I’ve come to understand it very differently.

A few days ago, I found myself sitting outside with my morning cup of tea, watching the light slowly reach the vines beyond the garden. It was one of those quiet moments that seem almost too ordinary to notice, yet somehow become the moments you remember.

I wasn’t asking for anything.

I wasn’t hoping something would happen.

I wasn’t trying to persuade anyone to change my circumstances.

Instead, I was simply sitting with a feeling of gratitude for the life I’m slowly creating.

And it struck me.

This is still a kind of prayer.

It’s just not the kind I grew up with.

For much of my life, prayer meant asking.

Asking for guidance.

Asking for strength.

Asking for protection.

Asking for things to work out.

There was comfort in that, and I’m grateful for the role it played in my life at the time. But somewhere over the past few years, my understanding began to shift.

I stopped looking outside myself quite so much.

I became fascinated by what was happening within.

That was when I first came across the idea of scientific prayer.

The phrase immediately caught my attention because it sounded like a contradiction. Prayer felt deeply spiritual. Science felt analytical. I couldn’t imagine the two belonging in the same sentence.

The idea comes largely from the work of Joseph Murphy, whose books explore the relationship between our conscious and subconscious minds. Whether or not you agree with all of his conclusions, one particular thought stayed with me long after I’d finished reading.

He wrote:

“Contrary to what many people think, it is not the thing that is believed in that brings an answer to a person’s prayer. Prayers are answered when the individual’s subconscious mind responds to the mental picture or thought in his or her mind.”

I found that idea incredibly thought-provoking.

Not because I suddenly believed every desire would magically appear if I thought about it enough.

But because it made me ask a different question.

What if the most important part of prayer isn’t what we’re asking for?

What if it’s the thoughts and feelings we’re rehearsing every single day?

The more I thought about it, the more I realised how often I’d prayed from a place of fear.

Please let this work.

Please don’t let everything fall apart.

Please let things get better.

Looking back, those prayers weren’t really filled with hope.

They were filled with anxiety.

My attention wasn’t on the life I wanted to create.

It was on the life I was desperately trying to avoid.

That doesn’t mean those prayers were wrong. They came from a place of deep pain, and I have enormous compassion for the version of me who prayed them.

But over time, something changed.

What this looks like on an ordinary morning

Without really planning it, my mornings began to look different.

It takes about ten minutes now. Some days five. I’m not precious about it.

The first thing is that I don’t touch my phone. That one rule does more work than everything else put together, because the moment I look at a screen, someone else has chosen what I’m thinking about.

I make tea and I sit down. Usually outside if the weather allows, at the table looking towards the vines.

Then I sit still for a few minutes. Sometimes I meditate properly. Sometimes I just breathe and watch the light move.

After that I picture the day. Not the details, because I’ve no idea what the day will contain and neither have you. Just the feeling I want to be carrying through it.

Peace.

Clarity.

Confidence.

Gratitude.

And then one more thing, which I think is the part that actually matters. I imagine getting to the end of the day and feeling proud of how I handled it, whatever it turned out to be. Not proud that everything went well. Proud of who I was whilst it happened.

That’s it. There’s no script and nothing to recite.

When fear gets there first

Most mornings it does, at least to begin with.

You sit down with your tea and before you’ve taken a sip your mind has already gone to the letter you’re dreading, or the conversation you didn’t handle very well, or the taxes you have to figure out.

For a long time I thought that meant I was doing it wrong.

I don’t fight it now. I notice what’s arrived, I name it, and I let it be there. Then I go back to the feeling I was reaching for.

Sometimes I have to do that four or five times in ten minutes. That’s not failure, that’s the practice. Every time you come back, you’re rehearsing the return, and the return is the skill.

The thing I’d say to anyone starting is this. Don’t judge it by how the ten minutes feels. Judge it by how you speak to yourself at four in the afternoon when something goes wrong. That’s where it shows up.

I noticed something surprising after a few weeks of this.

I wasn’t forcing life to change.

I was changing the atmosphere inside my own mind.

Whether you call that scientific prayer, meditation, intention, visualisation or simply mindful awareness doesn’t really matter to me anymore.

The label isn’t what changed my life.

The practice did.

One of the reasons this idea resonates with me is because it doesn’t require us to deny reality.

It’s easy to misunderstand concepts like scientific prayer and assume they’re asking us to pretend everything is wonderful when it clearly isn’t.

That hasn’t been my experience.

When my marriage ended, I couldn’t simply think positive thoughts and expect the pain to disappear.

When my family relationships changed, I couldn’t repeat affirmations and erase the grief.

Life still asked difficult things of me.

Scientific prayer, as I’ve come to understand it, isn’t about pretending difficult experiences don’t exist.

It’s about choosing which thoughts you repeatedly water.

Every day, our minds are rehearsing something.

Fear.

Scarcity.

Hope.

Possibility.

Resentment.

Gratitude.

We become remarkably fluent in whatever we practise most often.

That doesn’t mean difficult thoughts never appear.

Of course they do.

It just means we don’t have to invite them to stay for tea.

I often think about how much our inner conversations shape the way we experience the outer world.

If I spend every morning telling myself nothing ever works out, my brain becomes incredibly efficient at finding evidence to support that belief.

If I begin each day reminding myself that opportunities exist, that I can cope with uncertainty, that life has surprised me before in beautiful ways, I start noticing different things.

Perhaps that’s what changed most for me.

I stopped seeing prayer as asking something external to rescue me.

I began seeing it as gently aligning myself with the person I wanted to become.

The more peaceful I became within myself, the more peaceful my life began to feel.

Not because every problem disappeared.

But because I met those problems differently.

And isn’t that true of so many things?

We often wait for our circumstances to change before believing we’ll feel better.

Sometimes it works the other way around.

Sometimes the quiet work we do within ourselves changes the way we walk through the very same circumstances.

Whether you believe in God, the Universe, the wisdom of your subconscious mind, or simply the extraordinary capacity of the human brain to learn and adapt, I don’t think the invitation is all that different.

Pay attention to what you are rehearsing every day.

Notice the stories you tell yourself.

Become aware of the feelings you return to most often.

Because those quiet moments, repeated day after day, have a remarkable way of shaping the person we’re becoming.

Life has seasons that don’t always look productive from the outside. Seasons where you’re learning, healing, waiting, or quietly becoming someone new. They can feel frustrating because there’s so little to show for them.

Yet nature reminds us that the most important growth often happens beneath the surface.

Roots grow long before branches reach the light.

This shorter meditation is an invitation to slow down, release the pressure to have everything figured out, and trust that something meaningful may already be unfolding within you, even if you can’t see it yet.

When Life Feels Stuck Meditation

Sometimes the quietest seasons become the ones that change us the most.

1.

Where in my life does it feel as though nothing is happening right now?

How would it change my perspective if I believed something was quietly unfolding beneath the surface?

2.

Looking back, can I think of a time when a period of waiting eventually made sense?

What was happening within me during that season that I couldn’t see at the time?

3.

If my life followed the wisdom of nature rather than my own deadlines, what season might I be in right now?

Winter, spring, summer, or autumn? Why?

4.

What roots might I be growing today?

Think about qualities such as patience, courage, self-trust, compassion, or resilience. Which ones are quietly strengthening?

5.

What is one gentle step I can take today, even if I can’t yet see the bigger picture?

Remember, progress isn’t always dramatic. Sometimes it’s simply choosing not to give up.

Before I’d even got out of bed, my mind had already started its familiar routine.

What needs fixing?

What have I forgotten?

What if today is as hard as yesterday?

I don’t think I realised I was doing it. It was simply how my brain had learned to wake up after everything I’d been through.

Then, somewhere along the way, something almost imperceptible changed.

One morning I was making a cup of tea when I noticed the sunlight catching the kitchen table. It wasn’t spectacular. Just ordinary autumn light. The sort of thing I’d walked past thousands of times without seeing.

And my first thought wasn’t about everything that was wrong.

It was, That’s beautiful.

It surprised me.

Not because sunlight had suddenly become more beautiful, but because I’d become the sort of person who noticed it.

I sometimes think healing announces itself like this.

Not with grand breakthroughs.

Not with dramatic moments where everything suddenly makes sense.

But in tiny shifts that almost pass unnoticed.

You realise you’ve laughed without forcing it.

You find yourself making plans for next month.

A song reminds you of joy instead of loss.

You catch yourself looking up at the trees instead of down at the pavement.

Life hasn’t become perfect.

You’ve simply started seeing more of it.

Looking back, I don’t think those moments arrived by accident. They were the result of hundreds of small choices that never felt particularly important at the time.

A walk.

A page in my journal.

Ten quiet minutes meditating.

A good book.

Writing down something I appreciated before the day gathered pace.

None of them changed my life on their own.

Together, they slowly changed what I noticed.

And perhaps that’s one of the gentlest ways life changes us.

Not because our circumstances suddenly become different.

But because our attention does.

There was a moment a few days ago that caught me completely off guard.

I was reading an article by another writer. She described offering someone an easy way out of plans because she sensed they didn’t really want to come.

I smiled at first.

Then I stopped.

Because I realised I had done exactly the same thing with one of my daughters only days earlier.

Not because she’d asked.

Not because she’d said no.

Simply because somewhere inside me, I was already trying to make things easier for someone else.

Again.

It wasn’t a dramatic moment.

Nobody was upset.

Nothing bad happened.

But it made me wonder how many of our old patterns survive long after we think we’ve healed.

Sometimes healing isn’t discovering something completely new.

Sometimes it’s simply noticing an old habit quietly walking back into the room.

For years I thought healing meant becoming a different person.

More confident.
More assertive.
Someone who never doubted herself again.

Now I don’t think that’s true.

I think healing looks much smaller than that.

It’s catching yourself before you automatically apologise.

It’s noticing when you’re trying to manage someone else’s comfort before your own.

It’s recognising that familiar urge to make yourself smaller, and choosing something different instead.

Not perfectly.

Just a little differently than last time.

Those tiny moments don’t usually feel important.

But I think they’re where our lives slowly begin to change.

What if it’s already finding its way to you?

Write them down without dismissing them or trying to explain them away.

How did it affect the decision you made or the direction you took?

3. What question am I currently seeking guidance on?

Instead of trying to solve it immediately, write about what it would feel like to remain open and curious.

4. How does intuition usually speak to me?

Through feelings, images, ideas, physical sensations, dreams, conversations, or something else?

5. What would change if I trusted myself a little more?

Where in my life am I waiting for certainty when trust might be enough for the next step?

These last three weeks, I’ve written about the difference between chemistry and compatibility, the quiet ways we abandon ourselves in relationships, and what happens when we finally begin choosing ourselves again.

And I think all of those conversations naturally lead here.

Because eventually, after enough healing and self-reflection, something begins to shift in the way we move through the world.

We become calmer.
More grounded.
Less desperate for reassurance.
Less willing to shrink ourselves for approval.

And people feel it.

Not because we are trying to appear attractive.
But because there is something deeply compelling about someone who is genuinely connected to themselves.

I think magnetism is one of the most misunderstood things when it comes to relationships.

We’re often taught that being magnetic means:
being more confident,
more beautiful,
more successful,
more charismatic,
more mysterious.

But honestly, some of the most magnetic people I’ve ever met were not the loudest people in the room.

They were simply at ease with themselves.

They weren’t performing.
They weren’t shape-shifting to fit whoever they were with.
They weren’t desperately trying to be liked.

There was just a steadiness to them.

And after everything I’ve experienced in relationships over the years, I’ve come to believe that this kind of groundedness is what people are truly responding to.

Not perfection.
Not endless confidence.

Alignment.

For much of my life, I thought attraction came from being chosen.

So I worked very hard to be lovable.

I became agreeable.
Supportive.
Understanding.
Emotionally accommodating.

I tried not to ask for too much.
I tried not to make anyone uncomfortable.
I tried to become whatever version of myself felt safest inside the relationship.

But there’s a quiet exhaustion that comes from constantly managing yourself for other people’s approval.

Because deep down, your body knows when you are performing instead of simply existing as yourself.

And eventually, after years of self-abandonment, I reached a point where I no longer wanted to live that way.

I didn’t want relationships that required me to minimise myself in order to maintain them.

I didn’t want to constantly analyse whether I was lovable enough.
Pleasant enough.
Easy enough.

I wanted honesty.
Mutuality.
Emotional safety.
Peace.

And strangely, the moment I stopped trying so hard to earn love, my entire energy changed.

Not overnight.
Not dramatically.

But steadily.

I became less anxious in relationships.
Less reactive.
Less obsessed with external validation.

I stopped chasing people who gave mixed signals.
I stopped trying to convince emotionally unavailable people to meet me halfway.
I stopped over-explaining my boundaries, hoping they would finally feel acceptable.

And what replaced all of that effort was something much quieter,

Self-trust.

I think this is what many people are actually sensing when they describe someone as “magnetic.”

It’s the feeling of being around someone who no longer needs to betray themselves to be loved.

Someone whose words, boundaries, values, and choices all match.

That kind of congruence creates an incredible sense of calm.

Because people can feel authenticity.

And authenticity is deeply attractive.

One of the biggest lessons I learned dating again later in life was that the healthiest relationships often feel very different from the emotionally chaotic ones we romanticise when we are younger.

Healthy love is not constant uncertainty.
It is not emotional confusion.
It is not wondering where you stand all the time.

Healthy love feels safe enough for you to relax.

And I know that can sound almost disappointing when we’ve been conditioned to associate love with intensity and longing.

But peace is underrated.

There is something profoundly beautiful about being with someone who allows your nervous system to settle instead of constantly activating it.

Someone who communicates clearly.
Someone whose affection is consistent.
Someone who does not make you earn basic emotional security.

And perhaps most importantly, someone around whom you do not need to abandon yourself.

I think another thing that changes when you genuinely begin loving yourself is that you stop treating attention as validation.

This was a huge shift for me.

Because attention and love are not the same thing.

Someone can desire you and still not value you properly.
Someone can want access to you without being emotionally capable of meeting you deeply.

And once you understand that, your standards begin to change naturally.

You stop asking:
“How do I keep this person interested?”

And begin asking:
“Does this relationship actually feel aligned with the life I want to build?”

That question changes everything.

Because truly magnetic people are usually not obsessing over how to attract others.

They are focused on building lives that feel peaceful, meaningful, honest, and emotionally aligned.

They are connected to themselves.

And from that grounded place, healthier relationships become possible.

Not perfect relationships.
Not fantasy relationships.

Just relationships where both people are allowed to fully exist.

I think that’s what many of us are actually searching for underneath all the chasing and longing.

Not intensity.

Belonging.

The kind that does not require performance.

The kind that allows you to exhale.

A Small Practice For This Week

Notice where you are still trying to earn love, approval, or validation through performance.

• Are you over-giving to feel valued?

• Are you chasing reassurance instead of listening to your intuition?

• Are you shrinking parts of yourself to feel more acceptable?

• Are you trying to “win” emotionally unavailable people over?

Then gently ask yourself:

What would change if I believed I was already worthy of healthy love?

Sometimes magnetism is not something we create.

Sometimes it is simply what emerges when we stop abandoning ourselves, stop performing for approval, and finally allow ourselves to exist fully and honestly as we are.

Last week, I wrote about the quiet ways many of us disappear inside relationships.

The over-accommodating.
The softening of boundaries.
The habit of saying yes when we mean no.
The exhausting pressure of trying to remain lovable at all times.

And judging by the messages I received afterwards, so many people recognised themselves in it immediately.

Because self-abandonment rarely looks dramatic from the outside.

Most of the time it looks like:
being understanding,
being patient,
being easy-going,
being “good.”

Until one day you realise you no longer know where you end and everyone else begins.

I think for a long time, I believed choosing myself meant becoming selfish.

And after spending decades prioritising other people’s comfort, approval, and emotional needs, the idea of fully honouring myself felt deeply unfamiliar.

Even frightening.

Because if your nervous system has learned that love depends on being accommodating, then self-honouring can initially feel dangerous.

You worry:
Will people still love me if I stop over-giving?
Will I lose relationships if I become more honest?
Will people think I’ve changed?

But the truth is, you have changed.

Or perhaps more accurately, you are finally returning to yourself.

For me, this shift didn’t happen overnight.

It happened slowly after my marriage ended.

There was grief, of course.
A huge amount of rebuilding.
And moments where I questioned everything I thought I understood about love, relationships, and even myself.

But somewhere within all of that, something else quietly began happening too.

I started listening to myself again.

Not the version of me trying to keep everyone happy.
Not the version constantly scanning for approval.
Not the version trying to earn love through self-sacrifice.

The real me.

The one whose feelings mattered too.

And I think this is one of the most important things we can learn after years of self-abandonment.

Choosing yourself is not about becoming less loving.

It’s about no longer excluding yourself from your own compassion.

For years, I gave understanding to everyone except myself.

I could empathise endlessly with other people’s pain, limitations, and struggles while dismissing my own needs entirely.

And I see this pattern so often in people who are deeply caring.

They become experts at understanding others while becoming strangers to themselves.

But eventually, something begins to shift.

You start noticing how exhausted you feel after constantly overextending yourself emotionally.
You notice how heavy relationships feel when you are always the one carrying the emotional weight.
You notice how much energy is spent trying to maintain connections that require you to shrink.

And slowly, you begin making different choices.

Small ones at first.

You stop chasing people who give mixed signals.
You stop explaining your boundaries repeatedly in the hope they will finally be accepted.
You stop trying to convince people to value you properly.

And perhaps most importantly, you stop seeing your needs as an inconvenience.

I think one of the most surprising things about learning to choose yourself is that life becomes calmer.

Not emptier.
Not lonelier.
Calmer.

Your nervous system stops living in constant hypervigilance.

You stop obsessing over whether someone likes you enough.
You stop overanalysing every interaction.
You stop feeling responsible for fixing everyone else’s emotions.

Because your sense of worth is no longer entirely dependent on external reassurance.

And this changes your relationships in ways that are difficult to explain until you experience it yourself.

When you truly value yourself, you become harder to manipulate.
Harder to guilt.
Harder to emotionally neglect.

Not because you become cold.
But because you stop accepting less than genuine care.

I noticed this shift very strongly when I began dating again later in life.

For the first time, I wasn’t looking for someone to complete me or validate my worth. I had already spent years rebuilding a relationship with myself.

And that changes the energy you bring into relationships completely.

You stop entering connections from desperation or fear.
You stop seeing love as something scarce that must be held onto at all costs.

Instead, relationships become something you choose consciously rather than something you cling to for emotional survival.

Ironically, I think this is also what makes people more attractive.

Not in a performative “high-value” sort of way.

But because grounded people feel safe to be around.

There is something deeply calming about someone who -
knows who they are,
honours their feelings,
communicates honestly,
and no longer abandons themselves for approval.

People can feel the difference.

And I’ve seen this not only in romantic relationships, but in friendships too.

When you genuinely begin valuing yourself, your entire life starts reorganising around that energy.

You attract healthier dynamics because you stop participating in unhealthy ones.

You stop trying to prove your worth.
You stop chasing emotionally unavailable people.
You stop tolerating relationships that drain you.

And what replaces all of that is something far more peaceful -

Self-trust.

Not perfection.
Not constant confidence.

Just a quiet inner knowing that you no longer need to betray yourself to be loved.

I think this is the lesson I wish I had learned much earlier in life.

Love should feel like expansion, not exhaustion.

It should allow you to become more fully yourself, not less.

And choosing yourself does not mean closing your heart.

If anything, it allows you to love more honestly because you are no longer loving from fear, performance, or depletion.

You are loving from wholeness.

A Small Practice For This Week

Take a quiet moment and ask yourself:

• Where in my life am I still accepting less than I truly want?

• What do I keep hoping someone else will change?

• Where am I waiting for external validation instead of giving myself permission?

Then ask yourself one more question:

What would choosing myself look like here? (I’d love to know the answer?)

Not dramatically.
Not perfectly.

Just honestly.

Sometimes the biggest life changes begin with the smallest acts of self-honouring repeated consistently over time.

Something small and mean that appeared in people who weren’t, kind enough, or forgiving enough, or grown-up enough to let things go.

So when I felt it, I was ashamed of it.

I’d tell myself I was being petty. That other people had it worse. That a good wife wouldn’t keep count.

And I’d push it back down. Ignore it.

What you’re actually grieving

When I finally sat with it properly, after my marriage ended and there was nobody left to keep the peace with, I could see what was underneath.

I was grieving the parts of myself I’d slowly stopped expressing. The opinions I’d learnt to soften. The ambitions I’d played down because I didn’t want to take up too much room.

I was grieving needs I’d talked myself out of. Not big ones. The need to be asked how my day had been. The need for someone to notice I was struggling before I had to announce it.

And I was grieving something harder to articulate, which was all the years I’d spent waiting for emotional safety to arrive. Being patient enough, understanding enough, easy enough, in the belief that eventually it would turn up.

That’s not bitterness. That’s loss.

The trouble is that grief and resentment feel completely different from the inside. Grief feels sad. Resentment feels hard and hot and slightly ashamed of itself, which is why it’s so easy to dismiss.

But they’re the same thing just wearing different clothes.

Why it builds so quietly

Nobody resents a single incident. You resent a pattern.

It builds in the gap between what you felt and what you said. Every time that gap opens and doesn’t close, a small amount of it collects.

Say nothing once and it’s nothing. Say nothing for ten years and you have a weight you can’t put down and can’t explain, because no individual moment was ever bad enough to raise.

That’s what makes it so difficult to talk about. When you finally do, you’re not describing an event. You’re describing an build up, and the other person hears you complaining about the washing up.

I remember trying to explain how I felt and hearing myself sound unreasonable. Because the thing I was actually upset about had happened a thousand times in very small pieces, and no single piece would survive being held up on its own.

What it’s telling you

Here’s the part that took me longest, and it’s the reason I’d never want to get rid of my resentment entirely.

Resentment is information.

It tells you precisely where you’ve been abandoning yourself, and it’s remarkably accurate. It doesn’t collect around the compromises you made freely. It collects around the ones you made because you were afraid of what would happen if you didn’t.

So when I feel it now, I try not to argue with it. I ask what it’s pointing at.

What did I want to say and didn’t? What did I agree to when everything in me was saying no? What have I been carrying that I never agreed to carry?

The answers are usually uncomfortable and usually obvious the moment I stop avoiding them.

One thing worth knowing

Resentment doesn’t mean the relationship is over.

It means something true hasn’t been said yet.

Sometimes saying it changes everything and you find your way back to each other. Sometimes saying it reveals that the relationship only worked whilst you stayed quiet, which is painful but is also, eventually, useful to know.

Either way, the resentment isn’t the problem. It’s the smoke.

And if you’re feeling it right now, I’d only say this. You’re not being ungenerous. You’re not keeping score.

Something has been going unsaid for a long time, and some part of you has been keeping careful track of the cost.

That part deserves listening to, not shaming.

One of the biggest relationship lessons I’ve learned, especially after rebuilding my life and dating again later in life, is that anxiety and connection are not the same thing.

For years, I confused emotional intensity with love.

If someone made me overthink, crave reassurance, or feel emotionally consumed, I assumed the connection must be powerful.

But often, what I was actually experiencing was nervous system activation.

And I think many of us do this without realising it.

Especially if we grew up believing love had to be earned, worked for, or emotionally survived.

So if you’ve ever found yourself obsessing over someone who gives mixed signals, this is for you.

Here are a few signs that what you’re feeling may not actually be connection at all.

1. You feel anxious more often than peaceful

This was one of the biggest clues for me, although I ignored it for years.

Real connection can absolutely include excitement and vulnerability, but it should not leave you living in constant emotional uncertainty.

If you are:

• constantly checking your phone

• overanalysing messages

• needing reassurance

• feeling emotionally destabilised

• struggling to relax

your nervous system may be responding to inconsistency rather than genuine emotional safety.

Healthy love usually feels calmer than people expect.

2. You become hyper-focused on tiny changes in behaviour

When someone becomes emotionally important to us, of course we notice things.

But anxiety-based attachment creates hypervigilance.

You notice:

• slower replies

• different tone

• emotional distance

• small changes in energy

And your brain immediately starts trying to interpret what it means.

I know this pattern deeply.

It’s exhausting.

And often it comes from fearing that love can disappear suddenly if we are not “good enough.”

3. You feel like you are trying to win someone over

This is such an important one.

Sometimes what we call chemistry is actually the emotional high of trying to finally be chosen by someone emotionally unavailable.

If you constantly feel like you are:

• proving your worth

• trying harder

• over-giving

• earning affection

• waiting for consistency

pause and ask yourself honestly -

Would this relationship still feel exciting if it already felt secure?

That question can reveal a lot.

4. Your body feels tense rather than settled

Our bodies often know long before our minds do.

I ignored my body for years.

The anxiety.
The emotional exhaustion.
The tension I carried constantly in certain relationships.

Now, one of the first things I ask myself around people is
How does my body feel here?

Not:
How attracted am I?

But:
Do I feel emotionally safe enough to relax?

That question changed everything for me.

5. You are more connected to the fantasy than the reality

Anxiety-based attraction often thrives in uncertainty.

You imagine:

• potential

• future versions of the relationship

• who the person could become

• what it might turn into

while ignoring how the relationship actually feels in the present moment.

Healthy relationships usually require far less emotional decoding.

You do not constantly have to guess where you stand.

A Small Shift That Helped Me

One of the simplest but most life-changing things I started doing was slowing down emotionally instead of getting swept away immediately by chemistry.

I stopped asking:
“Do they like me?”

And started asking:
“How do I feel around them?”

Do I feel calm?
Can I be myself?
Do I leave interactions feeling grounded or emotionally depleted?

The more I learned to value peace over emotional intensity, the healthier my relationships became.

Not just romantically though. In every area of life.

Because there is a huge difference between someone activating your wounds and someone genuinely meeting you emotionally.

And once you experience emotionally safe connection, you begin realising how exhausting anxiety-based attraction actually was.
