There are artists who are celebrated. And there are artists who are necessary.

Robert Davidson is both.

Northwest Coast art is one of the world’s great artistic traditions — bold, symbolic, rooted in a living culture that stretches back thousands of years along the Pacific coastline of British Columbia and Alaska. Robert Davidson is its greatest living practitioner.

Born in Hydaburg, Alaska, of Haida and Tlingit descent, Davidson has spent six decades doing something that goes far beyond making beautiful objects. He has been putting a culture back together — piece by piece, mask by mask, pole by pole.

The art world has noticed.

Collectors from every continent compete for his work. Institutions from New York to Tokyo hold his pieces in permanent collection. And Damien Hirst — one of the most commercially successful artists alive — commissioned a 30-foot totem pole from Robert Davidson, part of a remarkable series of Davidson family commissions that established the Hirst estate as home to some of the most significant Northwest Coast art outside of Canada.

The Artist

Robert Davidson was born in 1946 in Hydaburg, Alaska, into a family where art was not a career choice but a birthright. His grandfather, Charles Edenshaw, is widely considered the greatest Haida artist of the nineteenth century. The lineage was there. The question was whether the culture would survive long enough to pass it on.

It nearly didn’t.

By the time Davidson was growing up, the systematic suppression of Indigenous culture across Canada and the United States had taken a devastating toll. Potlatches — the great ceremonial gatherings at the heart of Northwest Coast culture — had been banned by the Canadian government for over fifty years. The Haida language was dying. Ceremonial objects had been taken, sold, scattered into museums and private collections around the world. The living tradition of Northwest Coast art had been reduced to a flicker.

Davidson made it a flame again.

He began carving as a teenager, largely self-taught, studying the old pieces wherever he could find them — in museums, in photographs, in the few objects that remained in community hands. In 1969, at the age of twenty two, he carved and raised the first totem pole in the village of Masset, Haida Gwaii, in nearly a century. It was not merely an artistic act. It was a declaration. The culture was not dead. It was coming back.

What followed was a career of relentless creative evolution. Davidson never stood still. He absorbed the formal principles of the Haida tradition — the precise grammar of Northwest Coast design, the ovoid forms, the split representations, the sophisticated use of positive and negative space — and then pushed them forward. His work is rooted in tradition and entirely of the present moment simultaneously. That is an extraordinarily difficult thing to achieve. Most artists manage one or the other.

He works across an extraordinary range — sculpture, printmaking, jewellery, painting, mask-making. Each discipline is approached with the same rigour, the same formal intelligence, the same unmistakable hand. A Davidson mask and a Davidson gold bracelet and a Davidson silkscreen print are immediately recognisable as his, even to an untrained eye. That consistency of vision across such different forms is the mark of a truly great artist.

His international reputation has grown steadily for five decades. Collectors from every continent seek his work. Major institutions hold it in permanent collection. And when Damien Hirst — one of the most commercially powerful artists in the world — wanted a totem for his English estate, there was only one person he called.

Davidson is also a teacher and a community builder. He has spent decades mentoring younger Haida artists, understanding that the puzzle he set out to reassemble is not a solo project. It is generational work. The culture that nearly disappeared in his grandfather’s time is now producing a new generation of artists who carry it forward with confidence and pride.

Much of that is because of him.

The Work

His masks are among the most sought-after objects in contemporary Indigenous art. His totem poles stand in public and private collections across North America. His gold and silver jewellery carries the same formal precision as his large-scale carvings — nothing is decorative for its own sake, everything carries meaning.

What makes Davidson’s work so arresting to a collector is precisely this — that every object, regardless of scale or material, operates at the same level of formal intelligence. A small gold ring carries the same visual authority as a forty foot totem pole. The hand is always sovereign. The grammar is always present. And yet nothing feels mechanical or repeated. Every piece is a new conversation with the art.

His masks in particular are in a category of their own. They range from the deeply human to the fiercely supernatural — faces that make you stop, that hold your gaze, that feel inhabited rather than carved. The abalone eyes of his human masks catch the light in a way that is genuinely unsettling. You feel watched. That is intentional. In the Haida tradition a mask is not a representation. It is a presence.

His printmaking and painting bring the same formal rigour to a flat surface — the ovoid forms, the split figures, the precise relationships between positive and negative space — but freed from the constraints of wood they expand, breathe, become almost abstract. To a viewer unfamiliar with Northwest Coast art they read as bold modernist works. To someone who knows the tradition they are deeply, precisely Haida.

And then there is the jewellery. Davidson works in gold and silver with the same hand that carves cedar and argillite. The pieces are small enough to hold in a palm and carry enough visual information to study for an hour. Collectors who own a Davidson bracelet or ring rarely sell it.

He has described his life’s work in one remarkable sentence.

“It has been the art that has brought us back to our roots. I am proud to be one of those people chosen to put the puzzle back together again and move on.”

A Personal Postscript

Over the years my wife and I crossed paths with Robert and his wife several times — at art show openings, at a Sunday farmers market. They were always the same. Gracious, low key, entirely without pretension. Nothing about them announced who he was.

Then came the charity auction.

Davidson had donated one of his drums. My wife decided she would bid on it — a birthday present for me. The bidding started modestly, a few hundred dollars, and crept upward. By $2,000 a new bidder had entered. The price moved in serious increments. It reached $5,100 and stopped.

The drum was ours.

It was brought to our table. And then, out of nowhere, Robert Davidson appeared. He walked directly to my wife, smiled, and said — congratulations, but I’m sorry you ended up paying so much. I wanted to make sure the charity would realize a decent amount.

We all laughed. It was a perfect moment. Entirely him.

A year later we sold the drum for $17,000.

It was a big mistake.

A Final Note

I have followed Davidson’s work for many years. What strikes me every time — in the art, in the man — is the complete absence of ego alongside a total mastery of craft. That combination is rarer than talent itself.

Canada has produced many fine artists.

It has produced very few necessary ones.

Shawn Karpes’ path as an artist is a familiar one on the Northwest Coast - and that familiarity is exactly what makes it worth telling properly. Like generations of Kwakwaka’wakw artists before him, he didn’t arrive at mastery through a single teacher or a single tradition. He built it, layer by layer, from family, from mentors, and from an unglamorous willingness to keep learning long after most people would have called themselves finished.

Karpes’ journey began in the Native art program of the Victoria public school system, where he was introduced to the culture and history of the Kwakwaka’wakw and other West Coast First Nations. From there he studied design, painting, and basic carving under two of the most respected names in the field - Victor Newman and George Hunt Jr. - both of whom are members of his own family. That family connection runs deep: Karpes is a member of the ‘Namgis (Nimpkish) band, descended from the Alfred, Hunt, Scow, and Innis families, with blood ties reaching further still into the Tlingit, Nuu-chah-nulth, and Heiltsuk nations. His late father, Gus - an artist, musician, writer, and outdoorsman - was Dutch, and immigrated to Canada with his family shortly after the Second World War.

His mother played her own quiet, decisive role in shaping his path. Working at Arts of the Raven Gallery in Victoria, she introduced Shawn to a wide circle of First Nations artists whose work moved through the gallery walls. Eventually Karpes went to work there himself, alongside carvers whose names anchor the modern history of Northwest Coast art: Tony Hunt Sr., Tony Hunt Jr., and John Livingston. It was there that he sharpened his skill in mask carving and box design, learning at the shoulder of people who had already spent lifetimes with the wood.

The apprenticeship didn’t stop there. Karpes went on to work alongside renowned Kwakwaka’wakw carvers Beau Dick and Wayne Alfred, and spent two years learning silver and goldsmithing under Fah Ambers - a discipline that demands a different kind of precision than carving, and one that has clearly informed the finer detail work running through his later pieces. For five years, he was part of the carving program at the Royal B.C. Museum, and in 2001 he volunteered on the ITUSTO project, helping restore the world’s tallest freestanding totem pole at Beacon Hill Park in Victoria - hands-on conservation work on a monument that predates most of the artists who’ve since trained in its shadow.

What makes Karpes’ work distinct is the way it holds three things at once: traditional Northwest Coast design language, the natural world, and the supernatural. It’s a combination that requires real fluency in the formline tradition before an artist can bend it - you have to fully know the rules before you can meaningfully depart from them. Karpes himself has spoken to what drives that instinct to push rather than simply repeat: “My favourite part of the process is making something new that I haven’t made before. Even though my artwork is based in tradition, I want it to be innovative, push the boundaries, create unique things.”

That philosophy - rooted in tradition, restless in execution - is precisely what earned him the BC Achievement Foundation’s First Nations Art Award in 2021, an honour that recognizes excellence across the province’s Indigenous art community.

It’s also what sits behind his reputation among peers. Karpes has worked alongside artists across generations and, at times, across nations, and he’s been direct about why that matters to his own growth as a carver: “Good friends influence good art.”

That collaborative instinct extends well beyond the studio. Karpes has become a knowledge keeper for his community, tasked with helping preserve and pass on First Nations rituals, knowledge, and tradition - work he’s often called on for community potlatches and cultural projects. It’s a responsibility he doesn’t treat as separate from his art but as an extension of it: by teaching and giving back, he’s honouring the very people - family and mentors alike - who once opened the same doors for him.

That’s the throughline in Shawn Karpes’ story. Every skill he holds today - the formline, the box design, the goldsmithing, the conservation work on a hundred-year-old totem pole - arrived because someone else was willing to teach him. Now he’s the one holding the door open.

Northwest Coast art is built on lineage. For generations, knowledge has passed from elders and master carvers down to apprentices - a time-honoured system where technique, symbolism, and cultural protocol are handed down hand to hand, often within families, over years.

It’s how the tradition has survived some of the darkest periods of its own suppression. It’s also why a self-taught artist in this world tends to draw a second look.

Raymond Shaw is one of those cases. Born in 1982 in Campbell River, B.C., Shaw is a member of the Wei Wai Kum band of the Ligwilda’xw people, part of the southern Kwakwaka’wakw, whose territory runs along the Vancouver Island coastline between Cape Mudge and Campbell River. He had no formal teacher, no structured apprenticeship. He taught himself by studying museum pieces and books, and by looking closely at the work of the late Willie Seaweed, one of the most significant Kwakwaka’wakw carvers of the last century.

It’s worth saying: self-taught doesn’t mean self-invented. Scholars who’ve studied the field closely have documented that self-taught paths sit alongside apprenticeship and formal art school training as recognized routes into this practice - and that artists who take that route typically build their knowledge the same way Shaw did, through ethnography, museum research, and close study of established masters. That’s the tradition working the way it’s supposed to, even without a single teacher standing over the shoulder.

That said, the self-taught label only means something if the work backs it up, and that’s where decades of handling this art comes in - you learn to check the piece rather than the story. A few things stand out with Shaw’s. His Eagle Transformation mask, carved from red cedar with cedar bark, copper, and twine, opens to reveal a second face inside it. Transformation masks are among the hardest pieces to pull off - the carver has to resolve two complete designs, an outer form and an inner one, hinged so both hold their proportion whether the mask is closed or open. That’s not decorative carving. That’s closer to engineering.

The finish work tells a similar story. On pieces like his Shaman Mask, Shaw has used a finishing knife to leave deliberate texture across the wood, then worked graphite into it to bring that texture forward rather than sand it away. It’s a technique that rewards patience and shows immediately when it’s rushed.

His later work, especially carved alongside Tom Hunt and Gordon Dick, shows that discipline sharpening further. Those are two respected names in this field, and carving beside them isn’t something that happens without the technique to back it up. He’s also stayed connected to the more communal side of the practice - photographed carving a dugout canoe with hand-adzes and crooked knives alongside fellow carver Junior Henderson, using the same tools generations of Kwakwaka’wakw carvers have relied on.

The gallery record backs that up. Shaw’s work has moved through some of the most respected names in the field: Vancouver’s Lattimer Gallery and Coastal Peoples Fine Arts Gallery, Seattle’s Steinbrueck Native Gallery, Douglas Reynolds Gallery in Vancouver - where his Bukwas Mask recently listed at $36,000, his highest recorded price - along with Canada House Gallery and Spirits of the West Coast. These aren’t souvenir shops. They’re the galleries serious collectors watch, the ones that vet an artist’s technique and provenance before they’ll put a name on the wall. Beyond the gallery circuit, his pieces have gone into museum collections in London, Mexico City, and Vancouver, and a standing commission hangs at the Fairmont Waterfront Hotel here in Vancouver. Curators and gallery owners alike are selective by nature, and a self-taught carver earning that kind of reach across multiple continents doesn’t happen without the work doing the talking.

Why it matters: every piece like this is a living thread connecting to a tradition that colonial policy spent a century trying to break. When a Kwakwaka’wakw carver’s transformation mask hangs in a London museum, that’s the culture asserting itself on the world stage, on its own terms.

Originating from the misty islands of Haida Gwaii, its influence, monumental scale, and unparalleled formal sophistication set it apart, making it the benchmark against which much of the region’s artistic excellence is measured.

The Defining Grammar: Mastery of Formline

At the heart of Northwest Coast art is the Formline design system—a complex visual grammar of swelling and tapering lines, ovoids, and U-forms used to depict animals and mythical beings. Haida artists, particularly during the 19th-century classical period, are universally recognized for bringing this system to its fullest, most intricate, and technically perfect expression.

Haida formlines are continuous, flowing, and bold, meticulously defining the figures’ shapes and structures. They exhibit an exquisite balance and symmetry, demonstrating a deep understanding of positive and negative space. Beyond the Formline: Scale, Material, and Color

• Monumental Scale: Haida totem poles are among the most magnificent examples of the entire Northwest Coast tradition. Characterized by their imposing height, deep carving, and controlled, almost austere style, these poles are powerful narratives, genealogical records, and statements of Haida clan identity.

• Unique Medium: Argillite: Found exclusively on Haida Gwaii, argillite is a black, soft slate that Haida carvers transformed into an art form unique to their nation. These intricate miniature poles, pipes, and sculptural figures demonstrate an astonishing level of detail and craftsmanship.

• Traditional Color Palette: Historically, Haida two-dimensional art employed a restrained palette of primarily black and red pigments, contributing to its stark beauty and emphasizing the strength of the formline itself.

Distinguishing Haida from its Neighbors: A Spectrum of Styles

While sharing the broader Northwest Coast aesthetic, other First Nations developed distinct styles that complement rather than diminish Haida’s classical standing.

The Haida style is the classic, monumental, and highly conventionalized aesthetic of the Northern region, characterized by its strict, bold Formlines and unparalleled mastery of ovoids and U-forms, traditionally using only black and red for painting.

In contrast, the Kwakwaka’wakw art of the Central Coast is often more extravagant, striking, and openly sculptural, frequently employing a broader and more vibrant color palette that includes yellow, green, and white, with an emphasis on dramatic masks and ceremonial objects.

Further south, the Coast Salish tradition is often more minimalist and uses a different structural vocabulary; it employs distinct geometric elements like ovals, trigons, and crescents instead of the northern ovoids and U-forms, resulting in a looser, more curvilinear composition.

Even among their northern neighbors, the Haida style can be distinguished: Tlingit and Tsimshian art shares the Formline tradition but often features different proportions or a more intensive approach to filling space with detailed motifs than the typically bolder Haida works.

The Legacy: Master Artists and the Modern Renaissance

The enduring power and influence of Haida art are inextricably linked to its master artists, who pushed the boundaries of the formline tradition and, crucially, played a pivotal role in its modern revival:

The Classical Masters

• Charles Edenshaw (Daaxiigang, c. 1839-1920): Widely considered the greatest classical Haida artist, Edenshaw brought the 19th-century northern style to its ultimate perfection. His work, whether monumental poles, intricate argillite carvings, or delicate engraved silver bracelets, set the definitive standard for technical precision and formal composition.

• John Cross (c. 1801-1890s): An earlier master carver recognized for his foundational contributions to the argillite medium and early totem pole carving.

The Revival Generation

• Bill Reid (Iljuwas, 1920-1998): A towering figure in the 20th-century resurgence of Northwest Coast art, Reid (of Haida ancestry) almost single-handedly revived the classical Haida formline tradition. His monumental sculptures, such as “The Raven and the First Men” and “Spirit of Haida Gwaii,” are globally celebrated and are direct testaments to the enduring power of Haida artistic principles.

  

• Robert Davidson (Guud San Glans, b. 1946): Preeminent artist whose raising of a totem pole in Old Massett in 1969—the first in Haida Gwaii in nearly a century—was a landmark event, reigniting the pole-carving tradition. He continues to innovate, blending traditional knowledge with modernist and abstract compositions.

Contemporary and Emerging Artists

The tradition is thriving today, with artists who are upholding the rigorous standards of their ancestors while innovating in new media:

• Reg Davidson (b. 1954): Robert Davidson’s younger brother, a master carver and printmaker who maintains a strong connection to the traditional Haida aesthetic, creating both monumental poles and intricate silver jewelry.

  

• Christian White (Chiixas, b. 1962): A master argillite carver known for his exceptional detail, flawless execution, and deep understanding of Haida mythology, continuing the argillite tradition that is unique to the Haida Nation.

  

  Corey Bulpitt (Ta’Kiid Aayaa, b. 1978): A younger Haida artist who uses a diverse range of media, from wood and argillite carving to graphic design and even graffiti art, showcasing how the Haida formline can be adapted to contemporary urban expression.

Over a career spanning nearly four decades, he produced bentwood boxes, masks, feast bowls, serigraph prints, and original paintings in oil, acrylic, and watercolor, securing his place in major public and private collections.

Rosso’s multidisciplinary practice and mentorship under leading Northwest Coast masters positioned him as a pivotal figure in British Columbia’s Indigenous art renaissance.

Early Life and Influences

Rosso was born in 1944 in Burns Lake, BC, on the traditional territory of the Carrier Nation, where he absorbed local storytelling traditions and material culture from an early age.

In the late 1960s, he apprenticed under Kwakwaka’wakw master Doug Cranmer, mastering formline design principles that would become central to his aesthetic vocabulary.

A subsequent collaboration in 1987–88 with Haida master Robert Davidson deepened Rosso’s carving techniques, resulting in a three-year apprenticeship that refined his command of coastal motifs.

Rosso’s carvings and prints grace institutions like the UBC Museum of Anthropology and Vancouver International Airport, amplifying Indigenous presence in civic spaces.

He premiered his first solo exhibition at the Douglas Reynolds Gallery in 1999 and remained a champion for emerging Northwest Coast artists through serigraph collaborations and mentorship.

Rande Cook, Kwakwaka’wakw multimedia artist and chief of the ‘Namgis Nation, at work

Dear reader,

I’ve spent forty years looking, collecting art, my favourite, Northwest Coast Art.

Every so often, I see something that is truly outstanding, dazzling and mesmerizing.

Rande Cook’s work fits the description.

WHO TAUGHT HIM TO DO THIS

Before you can appreciate how easily Cook moves between traditional and modern, it helps to know exactly whose hands shaped his. This isn’t an artist who picked up a chisel and found his own way. He apprenticed under master carver John Livingston starting in 2002, studied metalwork under Robert Davidson - one of the most significant Haida artists alive - and learned woodcraft under Calvin Hunt. Beau Dick and Don Yeomans mentored him. Bruce Alfred taught him the traditional engineering of bentwood boxes. That’s about as serious a lineage as exists in Northwest Coast art right now, and Cook didn’t just pass through it - he apprenticed under Livingston for years.

Then he went looking for more, well outside the tradition he’d already mastered. In 2010, he traveled to Italy to study European repousse and chasing metalwork technique under master Valentin Yotkov, then followed up with further study in Yotkov’s New York studio. In 2017, he took an artist residency at Pilchuck Glass School in Washington - the school Dale Chihuly himself helped found - and shortly after, a second residency at the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, learning to translate his traditional forms into glass alongside professional glass-blowing teams.

That’s the answer to how he moves so easily between the traditional formline and something entirely his own: he didn’t arrive at that fluidity by accident or instinct alone. He built it deliberately, mentor by mentor, medium by medium, treating Western glasswork and European metalworking with the same seriousness he brought to Kwakwaka’wakw carving under Livingston.

WHAT STRIKES ME MOST

What strikes me first isn’t any single piece, it’s the scope of the whole practice. Cook moves between the traditional formline his mentors spent decades teaching him and something entirely his own, and he does it without ever looking like he’s choosing one at the expense of the other. That’s rare. Most artists working across that line end up flattening one side to serve the other, tradition reduced to decoration, or innovation reduced to a gimmick layered on top of an old form. Cook doesn’t do either. Watching him move back and forth between the two isn’t just skillful, it’s close to breathtaking, a genuine journey of discovery rather than a technique on display.

I don’t say this lightly: he may be the most important living artist working in this tradition today, precisely because he makes that fluidity look effortless when it’s anything but.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

Cook has said, about as plainly as an artist ever states their own mission, exactly what he’s trying to do:

“It is my intentions to break barriers between Indigenous art and the art of the world by fusing many ideas that will enrich the body of my art form. My hope is that by doing this we as a society can see the beauty in all cultures and embrace the spirit that connects us all in an ever embracing rainbow of colour.”

Read the whole piece with that sentence in mind and everything else about him snaps into focus. This isn’t an artist who happens to work across traditions. Breaking that barrier deliberately, as a stated mission, is the entire point of the practice.

A RECORD THAT BACKS UP THE CLAIM

None of this is a hunch on my part. Cook was featured in Changing Hands: Art Without Reservation 2 at the Museum of Art and Design in New York in 2005 - a major, internationally watched survey of contemporary Indigenous art. His photographic self-portrait Look Mom, I’ve Arrived, depicting him in a hand-carved Kwakwaka’wakw mask walking through Times Square, was acquired by the Portrait Gallery of Canada.

In 2015, the province of British Columbia recognized him with a BC Achievement Award in First Nations Art. That same year and the next, he held the Audain Professorship of Contemporary Art Practice of the Pacific Northwest at the University of Victoria - the first artist from a Vancouver Island nation to hold that position.

His work today sits in galleries and private collections across Canada and the United States, and in institutional and private collections internationally. He’s also chief of the ‘Namgis Nation, a role he’s described as making sure his people are fed in every sense, not just the literal one - the same reciprocity, I’d argue, that shows up formally in his art: something given, something exchanged, nothing extracted without a return.

SEEDS OF TOMORROW

His latest major work makes the case better than I can. Seeds of Tomorrow isn’t one sculpture, it’s four, carved from salvaged red cedar and finished with acrylic paint, abalone, and aluminum. Each piece embodies one of the four elements - Air, Fire, Water, and Earth - not as abstractions, but as living relationships, the way Kwakwaka’wakw knowledge systems have always understood them: land, culture, and ceremony as one continuous fabric, not separate categories.

The origin of the work is almost as telling as the work itself. The first Seed wasn’t planned as part of a series at all - it emerged in response to Cook’s exhibition Culturally Modified: The Relationships That Marked a Place in Time. But that first piece, Cook has said, already carried the seed of the other three inside it. Together, the four sculptures now form what the artist describes as a cycle of becoming: Air breathes life into beginnings. Fire clears space for emergence. Water binds all relations. Earth receives, remembers, and renews. Cedar itself, the Tree of Life in Kwakwaka’wakw tradition, roots all four.

That’s the part I keep coming back to. These aren’t metaphors mounted on a wall for effect. They’re teachings, built to argue - quietly, in wood and abalone rather than words - that Indigenous knowledge isn’t a historical artifact. It’s urgently relevant right now, and it’s asking something specific of anyone standing in front of it: choose relationship over extraction, responsibility over profit, continuity over erasure.

One of the best way to illustrate his fluidity of adapting the old with the modern is in home and gallery settings. Here you can see clearly how the two meld together effortlessly - the art with the modern.

An artist who apprenticed under a master carver for years, studied metalwork in Italy, learned glassblowing at the school Chihuly built, and still calls himself on a mission to fuse it all into “an ever embracing rainbow of colour” isn’t finished. By his own telling, he’s only partway through the work he set out to do.

Calvin Morberg is a name worth learning now, before everyone else catches up.

He’s a traditionally trained wood carver based in Whitehorse, working out of a Tlingit carving tradition that goes back thousands of years. What sets him apart isn’t just the skill, it’s the discipline behind it. Morberg spent years studying the old masters who built the foundations of this art form before he ever considered himself ready to add to it. He’s said his greatest satisfaction isn’t making something new for its own sake, it’s carrying a living tradition forward for the next generation of artists and collectors.

In 2021, he took that discipline further. Morberg apprenticed for a full year under Brian Walker, a respected Yukon elder and one of the region’s most accomplished coppersmiths, to learn copper repoussé, a demanding technique that involves hammering malleable metal from the reverse side to raise a design in relief on the front. It’s slow, exacting work, and it connects directly to something the Tlingit have practiced since before European contact: mining raw copper from Yukon creek deposits and forging it into tools, weapons, and ceremonial copper shields known as tinaa.

The apprenticeship culminated in Morberg’s first solo exhibition, at the Yukon Arts Centre in March 2022, which included a highly detailed copper totem made in collaboration with Walker himself. His current exhibition, *Formline Visions*, is the fuller statement of that year’s work: copper repoussé pieces alongside his wood sculpture, an Eagle Warrior Helmet, three birch masks, and two carved and painted panels, each one blending wood and metal into a single form.

Calvin Morberg is quickly gaining recognition as one of the most compelling emerging voices in Indigenous art today.

His work is a powerful fusion of ancestral knowledge and contemporary expression, rooted deeply in the rich carving traditions of his Tlingit heritage.

My wife and I spent countless Saturdays wandering Toronto’s galleries. One weekend, after choosing a Calder lithograph, we paused. Something tugged at us. Before buying it, we decided to visit Brian Marion, Morrisseau’s assistant, who had advertised Morrisseau paintings in the Toronto Star.

Marion’s apartment was filled with them.

I spent the weekend verifying his legitimacy — a wise move, as the market was already filling with forgeries. Ours were authenticated. They remain among the most meaningful works we’ve ever acquired.

Beyond Wood: A Multidisciplinary Creator

Hello, everyone. Today I want to talk to you about something that has been the great joy of my life — and I suspect, the secret engine of yours too.

For more than forty years, I have been a journalist. And the thing that has kept me at this craft — through every deadline, every difficult story, every moment of doubt — is this: words, when they carry the truth, can change how people see the world. They can bring joy or sorrow. They can inspire or destroy. They can open a door into a life you never knew existed and leave you permanently, gratefully altered.

That is what journalism is for, at its finest. Not to fill column inches. Not to chase the noise. But to discover the stories that help shape how we understand the world — and to tell them in a way that makes people feel something real.

Today, we take you into the world of a man who understood this better than almost anyone who has ever lived. A man who turned a camera and a microphone into the most powerful instruments of wonder the modern age has produced. A man who became 100 years old this week, and whose reflections, discoveries and insights have shaped our world as profoundly as any politician, scientist, or philosopher of his century.

His name, of course, is Sir David Attenborough. And his gift — his extraordinary, singular, irreplaceable gift — was to take us into a world that most of us will never visit. THE RAVEN ALREADY KNEW

David Attenborough at 100 — and what the art of the Northwest Coast has always understood about the world he spent a century trying to show us.

Begin with the Raven. In the oral traditions of the Haida, the Tlingit, the Tsimshian, the Kwakwaka’wakw and the other Nations whose art and stories have shaped the cultural landscape of the Pacific Northwest Coast for thousands of years, the Raven is the great transformer — the trickster and the bringer of light, the creature that moves between worlds, the being that stole the sun from a box and placed it in the sky where it has given light to the world ever since. The Raven is always in motion, always crossing boundaries, always demonstrating the fundamental truth at the centre of Northwest Coast cosmology: that the line between the human and the animal world is not a boundary at all. It is a doorway. And it swings both ways.

This is the knowledge that Northwest Coast art has carried in its forms — in the bold formlines of its carvings, in the transformation masks that open to reveal one creature inside another, in the orca swimming through a totem pole with its dorsal fin carved into the shape of a raven’s head, in the salmon returning to the river of its birth to feed the forest floor with its own body — for at least six thousand years. The human and the animal are kin. They share the world not as owner and tenant, but as members of the same extended family, each with obligations to the other that no treaty, no legislation, and no market can supersede.

David Attenborough, working from within the Western scientific and broadcasting tradition with a BBC camera and a Cambridge degree in geology and zoology, spent a hundred years arriving at the same place. He did not use the language of transformation or kinship. He used the language of evolutionary biology and ecosystem interdependence. But the destination was identical — the understanding that humans are not separate from the living world they inhabit. They are of it. And the consequences of forgetting that truth are existential.

He said it himself, with characteristic economy: “We moved from being a part of nature to being apart from nature.” The Northwest Coast traditions he would have encountered in the waters and forests he filmed in British Columbia, in Alaska, along the Pacific coast he documented across seven decades — those traditions never made that move. They stayed. And their art is the record of that staying.

THE ANIMALS HE FILMED AND WHAT THE ART ALREADY KNEW

Consider the orca. In Blue Planet and Blue Planet II, Attenborough’s camera followed killer whale pods through the cold Pacific waters with a closeness and a reverence that was new to Western broadcasting audiences — showing the orca not as an ocean predator to be feared, but as a creature of extraordinary social complexity, family loyalty, and intelligence. Pod members spend their entire lives together. They raise their calves communally. They mourn their dead. The sequences left audiences in millions of living rooms feeling something they had not quite felt about an animal before — the shock of recognition. Of kinship.

Northwest Coast peoples had understood this for millennia. In the traditions of the Kwakwaka’wakw, it is believed that when a human drowns at sea, the killer whales take them to their underwater villages and transform them into orcas. The souls of ocean hunters, upon death, become the very creatures they once hunted. The orca is the Lord of the Ocean and the guardian of travellers — the protector of those who move away from home, and the force that leads them back when the time comes. Family, community, protection, longevity. The orca in Northwest Coast art embodies exactly the qualities that Attenborough’s cameras, sixty feet underwater in the Pacific, revealed to a global audience as if for the first time.

Consider the salmon. In Attenborough’s documentaries the salmon’s return to its birth river is one of the great recurring dramas of the natural world — the extraordinary navigation across thousands of miles of open ocean, the journey upstream against current and waterfall, the spawning and the death, the body dissolving back into the riverbed to feed the very forest that feeds the next generation. It is a story of cycles, of sacrifice, of the profound interdependence of water, forest, fish, and the animals and peoples that depend on all three. Attenborough has returned to it throughout his career because it contains within it the whole argument he has been making — that everything is connected, that nothing exists in isolation, that the health of one system depends on the health of all the others.

The salmon has been central to Northwest Coast art and cosmology for thousands of years for exactly this reason. It is not merely a food source. It is the connector — the creature that links the ocean to the river to the forest to the land, carrying the richness of the sea into the heart of the continent on its own body. To harm the salmon is to harm the forest. To harm the forest is to harm everything that lives within and beyond it. This is ecological thinking of the most sophisticated kind, encoded not in scientific papers but in visual language, in ceremony, in the oral histories passed from generation to generation across the full length of the Pacific coast.

The salmon as connector, as sacrifice, as the link between ocean and forest. Northwest Coast art understood the ecology of interdependence long before it had a scientific name.

THE TRANSFORMATION MASKS AND THE CAMERA

There is one dimension of Northwest Coast art that speaks with particular directness to Attenborough’s life’s work, and it is the transformation mask. These extraordinary objects — created primarily by Kwakwaka’wakw artists and used in ceremony — open at the pull of a cord to reveal a second face beneath the first. The outer face might be a raven or an eagle or an orca; the inner face is human. Or the outer face is human and within it lives another creature entirely. The mask enacts, in a single gesture, the central cosmological truth of the Northwest Coast traditions: that the human and the animal are not opposite categories. They are the same category, seen from different angles.

Attenborough spent his career doing something structurally identical with a camera. In Life on Earth, in the gorilla sequence filmed in Rwanda in 1979, he sat on a hillside while wild mountain gorillas climbed over him, tugged at his hair, and regarded him with curious dark eyes — and the sequence worked, reached seventy million people and changed conservation history, not because it was dramatic but because it was revelatory. The gorillas looked at him. He looked back. And the audience saw, in that mutual regard, exactly what the transformation mask enacts in ceremony: two faces, one recognition.

He was not separate from the animal world he filmed. He was inside it. The camera was not a window. It was a doorway. And for seventy years, he pulled the cord that opened it.

A LIFE IN MILESTONES

1926 — Born in Isleworth, London.

1952 — Joins BBC Television. The camera as a tool for crossing the boundary between the human and the animal world.

1979 — Life on Earth. The gorilla sequence. Seventy million people see themselves in another creature for the first time.

2001 — The Blue Planet. The orca in the cold Pacific. Family, community, protection — the qualities Northwest Coast art has always carried in the figure of the killer whale.

2006 — Planet Earth. The salmon’s return. The forest and the river and the ocean, understood at last as a single living system.

2019 — Our Planet. The witness statement. The cost of forgetting what Northwest Coast cosmology has always remembered.

2026 — Turns 100. The camera has been laid down many times and always picked up again. The doorway stays open.

WHAT THE ART CARRIES FORWARD

David Attenborough spent a century making the case, with every tool that Western science and broadcasting could put in his hands, for a way of understanding the living world that the peoples of the Northwest Coast have carried in their art, their ceremony, and their oral traditions for six thousand years. The raven transforming into a human. The orca carrying the souls of the drowned into the underwater village. The salmon threading the riches of the ocean back into the heart of the forest. These are not myths in the diminished sense that the word has acquired in the modern era — as things that are not true. They are myths in the original and proper sense: stories that carry a truth too large and too complex and too important to be contained in any single factual statement.

Attenborough understood this, perhaps better than he knew. His greatest sequences — the gorillas, the coral reef, the whale song in the deep ocean, the salmon returning home — worked as television not because they were informative but because they were mythic. They told true stories at the scale of truth. They asked audiences to feel the kinship between human life and all other life, not merely to understand it intellectually, and that feeling was what changed behaviour, changed policy, changed the world.

The art of the Northwest Coast has always worked at that scale. It has always told stories at the size they deserve. And on the hundredth birthday of the man who spent his life trying to do the same thing with a camera, it is worth honouring both traditions in the same breath — and recognising that they were always, at the deepest level, saying the same thing.

The raven already knew. The art already showed it. The camera spent a century catching up.

HE ARRIVED AT THE TRUTH BLACK ARTISTS HAVE ALWAYS KNOWN

David Attenborough at 100 — and a conversation that is long overdue.

There is something that does not get said often enough about

David Attenborough.

It gets said that he was the greatest broadcaster of his

era. That he invented the modern nature documentary. That

he brought the wonders of the natural world into living

rooms across the globe. That he trusted his audience with

the truth, even when the truth was devastating. All of

this is correct.

But here is what rarely gets said: the conclusion that

David Attenborough spent seventy years trying to reach —

through cameras, through science, through the accumulated

evidence of a century of witnessing — is a conclusion that

Black artistic, spiritual and philosophical traditions

arrived at long before a single frame of film was ever

shot.

That humans are not above nature. They are of it. That the

animal world is not a backdrop to human life — it is kin.

That the separation of humanity from the living world is

not progress. It is loss. It is, in Attenborough’s own

words, the central crisis of our time.

“We moved from being a part of nature to being apart

from nature.”

African cosmology has understood this always. The Yoruba

tradition, the Zulu, the Sengwer of Kenya — across the

vast diversity of African spiritual and cultural life,

a thread runs constant: the world is not divided into

the human and the non-human. Everything is animate.

Everything has spirit. The animal, the tree, the river,

the ancestor — all are participants in a single living

conversation.

Black artists in the diaspora carried this understanding

into new worlds and new forms. Langston Hughes found it

in rivers. Zora Neale Hurston found it in the earth and

the folk traditions growing from it. Maya Angelou found

it in the caged bird that knew, instinctively, the meaning

of freedom. The natural world was never decoration in

Black art. It was always the deep structure — the

spiritual architecture beneath everything visible.

Attenborough, working from within the Western scientific

and broadcasting tradition, kept arriving at the same

place. A man with a BBC camera and a Cambridge degree,

spending a century slowly unlearning the assumption that

nature is a resource to be catalogued rather than a

community to be respected.

They were walking toward each other from opposite ends

of a very long road.

Africa — the continent Attenborough returned to throughout his career. The six-part BBC series Africa (2013) brought the continent’s wildlife to audiences worldwide with images of breathtaking intimacy and power.

THE MAN AND HIS JOURNEY

He was born on May 8, 1926, in Isleworth, west London,

the middle son of a university principal. As a small boy

he roamed his family’s university campus in Leicester

collecting fossils, stones, and specimens. An adopted

sister gave him a piece of amber filled with prehistoric

creatures. He held it up to the light. He never recovered

from the wonder of it.

He studied geology and zoology at Cambridge, served in

the Royal Navy, was turned down by BBC Radio without an

interview, and joined the BBC’s fledgling television

service in 1952. By 1954 he was presenting Zoo Quest,

travelling the world filming animals in their natural

habitats — many of them in Africa and the wider Global

South — for the first time on British television.

He became Controller of BBC Two in 1965, launched colour

television in Britain, commissioned groundbreaking content.

Was offered the BBC directorship. Turned it down. Walked

back to the field in 1973 because that was always where

the truth was.

In 1979, Life on Earth changed television. Seventy million

viewers worldwide. A new way of understanding what it

means to share a planet.

Watch this — the sequence that defined a career, and said

more about kinship between species than any lecture ever

could.

AFRICA AND THE LONG RETURN

Throughout his career, Attenborough returned again and

again to Africa — the continent that is home to the

deepest and most ancient human relationship with the

natural world. His 2013 BBC series Africa brought the

continent’s extraordinary wildlife to audiences worldwide

in images of breathtaking intimacy: elephants moving

across burnt grassland at dusk, chimpanzees navigating

ancient forests, the teeming coast of the Cape where

desert meets ocean in a collision of life.

He understood, in the way great storytellers understand

things, that Africa was not simply a location. It was

an argument. An argument that the world before the

rupture — before the long separation of human beings

from the living community around them — was richer,

more various, more beautiful than anything we have

built since.

Black artists have been making that argument in paint,

in music, in literature, in sculpture, in textile and

in ceremony for centuries. The Attenborough documentaries,

for all their extraordinary power, were newcomers to a

conversation that was very old.

What they brought — and this matters — was access. The

BBC’s reach, Netflix’s global platform, the technological

miracle of high-definition film — these tools put that

ancient argument in front of hundreds of millions of

people who had never encountered it before. People who

needed the camera to see what other traditions had always

known how to feel.

That is not a small contribution. But it is worth naming

clearly: the knowledge was not new. Only the audience was.

A LIFE IN MILESTONES

1926 — Born in Isleworth, London.

1952 — Joins BBC Television. A career of witnessing begins.

1954 — Zoo Quest. First journeys to Africa and the

Global South. The camera goes where Western audiences

have never looked.

1979 — Life on Earth. The argument for kinship between

species reaches seventy million people.

2013 — Africa. Six episodes. The continent’s wildlife

in images of extraordinary power and intimacy.

2019 — Our Planet. The witness statement. “The stability

of nature can no longer be taken for granted.”

2026 — Turns 100. Still bearing witness. Still making

the case.

THE CONVERSATION WE SHOULD BE HAVING

David Attenborough spent a century arriving, through

science and storytelling, at a truth that Black and

African traditions encoded in their cosmologies, their

art, their ceremonies, and their relationship with the

land long before Western broadcasting existed.

That convergence deserves more than acknowledgment.

It deserves a genuine conversation — between the

traditions that have always known this truth, and the

broader world that Attenborough’s platform helped to

reach.

Powerful, dramatic, universal, the struggles, tribulations of the black experience – hallmarks of America’s most widely acclaimed black artist Jacob Lawrence.

Lawrence – his abstract, colourful style – appealed to a wide audience.

At age 30 he was heralded as the “foremost Negro artist.”

His artist experience unique – growing up in a black community, taught primarily by black artists, influenced by black people.

At age 12 Lawrence enrolled in a school in Harlem that offered an after school program in arts and crafts.

His talent was recognized immediately by his teachers, his biggest advocate another painter, Charles Alston, who managed to open various doors for Lawrence.

By age 21 Lawrence exhibited 41 of his paintings – part of a show on African American art – at the Baltimore Museum of Art.

From then on Lawrence’s career was on an upward trajectory – receiving endless acclaim and public recognition.

His art mesmerizing, pointed, powerful, relevant and stunning.

Lawrence – his abstract, colourful style – appealed to a wide audience.

His Migration Series documented the Great Migration of more than one million African Americans from the rural South to the industrial North following the outbreak of World War I. The 60-panel series was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in 1941, when Lawrence was just 23, and became the first work of a Black artist acquired by MoMA.

Lawrence’s lifelong commitment to education was evident both in the classroom and in his art. As early as 1941, Lawrence visited public schools with his paintings, talking with students about art and American history. For him, his art functioned as a means of educating people about the past, inspiring them in the present, and providing them hope for the future.

The Jacob and Gwen Lawrence Estate provided resources to support several programs offering unique educational opportunities to aspiring young artists, including the Lawrence Scholars Program which offers twelve promising young people in New York City the opportunity for intensive study and mentoring in the visual arts at Parsons School of Design.

Lawrence always saw himself as a New Yorker but settled into Seattle life, embracing his role as educator and mentor without any ego. He was beloved by students, active in public school visits and involved in the community at large.

The Jacob Lawrence Gallery at the University of Washington continues to honour his legacy through annual residency programs and exhibitions focused on social justice and the Black experience.

Lawrence's works are in the permanent collections of numerous museums including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Northwest Art. His 1947 painting The Builders hangs in the White House.
