Three weeks ago, in Mecca, on August 7, 2026, three Muslim countries signed what Western media has quietly acknowledged is one of the most significant security agreements of the 21st century. Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan formalized a trilateral joint defense pact using NATO-style Article 5 language. Any attack on any one of them will be treated as an attack on all three. Turkey has the second-largest military in NATO. Pakistan is nuclear-armed. Saudi Arabia holds the world’s largest easily accessible oil reserves and is the world’s largest crude oil exporter. The joint statement made clear the pact is “open for other regional countries to join.”

Western media coverage of the pact has ranged from muted to actively concerned. Analysts have used words like “concerning,” “destabilizing,” “new bloc,” and “escalatory.” The framing has consistently treated the pact as a potential threat that responsible people should be worried about.

That framing is the trick. And the whole reason this piece exists is to show you exactly how the trick works, why the pact was signed, what it actually is, and why Muslim collective defense is not aggression. It is the reasonable response of any sovereign nation looking at 20 years of Western attacks with impunity and asking the most rational question a state can ask: who is going to protect us if we do not protect ourselves?

Let me show you where the dots come from.

What the Pact Actually Is

The trilateral defense agreement signed in Mecca on August 7, 2026, is the expansion of an earlier bilateral pact. On September 17, 2025, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif signed the Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement at Al-Yamamah Palace in Riyadh. That original pact contained the core commitment: any aggression against either country would be treated as aggression against both. The two countries had cooperated militarily for decades, with Pakistan stationing forces in Saudi Arabia during the Iran-Iraq War and the First Gulf War. But this was the first time the arrangement was formalized as an Article 5-style collective defense commitment.

Eleven months later, in Mecca, Turkey joined. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, MBS, and Sharif signed the expanded trilateral pact in a ceremony that was covered in the Islamic world with historic weight and in the Western press with cautious framing. The joint statement declared the pact’s official rationale was “to strengthen collective deterrence against any act of aggression” and further provide “for the enhancement of all aspects of defence cooperation among the three states.” The statement also explicitly noted that the agreement is open for other regional countries to join.

Turkish and Saudi officials, speaking on background to reduce diplomatic friction, made three clarifications. First, that the pact was “purely defensive in nature.” Second, that it is “not against any specific actor.” Third, that it does not represent an effort to establish a military axis or a sectarian bloc, and is not linked to any nuclear ambitions or arms race.

Every one of those clarifications is technically true and simultaneously understating what the pact actually is. Because when you add a nuclear-armed state (Pakistan) and a NATO military heavyweight (Turkey) to the wealthiest Arab state and structure the arrangement as Article 5 collective defense, you have functionally created a Muslim NATO. Whether or not that language is used in the formal documents, the structural reality is that the three signatories have created a security architecture that operates outside the American-led security order that has governed the region for 80 years, and they have made it possible for other Muslim states to join.

Iran has already publicly commented, with mixed signals. Iranian parliament members have criticized the specific pact for not including Tehran and have argued that a “paper agreement with Turkey and Pakistan will not bring Saudi Arabia security” any more than dependence on Washington did. But the Iranian position is not opposed to Muslim collective defense in principle. It is opposed to a specific version that excludes Iran. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps has for months been publicly calling for Gulf and Muslim states to unite against the pattern of Western aggression targeting Muslim countries and Islam broadly. This pact is a partial version of what Iran has been advocating, minus Iranian membership. The trajectory is clear even if the current alignment is not complete.

That is what the pact is. Now let’s talk about why it happened.

The Trigger: Israel Bombed Qatar

You cannot understand this pact without understanding what happened on September 9, 2025.

On that Tuesday afternoon, the Israel Defense Forces conducted an airstrike in the Leqtaifiya district of Doha, the capital of Qatar. The target was the political leadership of Hamas, meeting in a Qatari government residential complex. The Hamas leaders present were negotiators. They had gathered specifically to discuss their response to a ceasefire proposal put forward by the United States. Present in the meeting were Khalil al-Hayya, Zaher Jabarin, Muhammad Ismail Darwish, and Khaled Mashal. All four were involved in active mediation of a US-backed peace process.

Israel launched missiles into a US-allied Gulf state to kill the negotiators of a US-proposed ceasefire.

Six people were killed, including a Qatari security officer. The Hamas leadership survived. But the target was struck. The message was delivered. Qatar’s Foreign Ministry called the attack a “cowardly assault” and a “blatant violation of international law.” The UN Secretary-General condemned it as a “flagrant violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Qatar.” An emergency session of the UN Security Council was convened.

Here is what makes the Doha attack the geopolitical turning point that made the mutual defense pact inevitable. Qatar is not just a US ally. Qatar hosts Al Udeid Air Base, the largest United States military base in the entire Middle East region. American troops are stationed there. American aircraft are based there. Al Udeid has been used as a staging ground for US operations across the region for over 20 years. When Israel bombed Doha, it was not just attacking a Gulf state. It was attacking the country that hosts the American military presence that is supposed to guarantee Gulf security.

What did the United States do? The White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the administration’s “unfortunate incident” framing but noted that “eliminating Hamas” was a “worthy goal,” and did not condemn Israel. Trump spoke to Netanyahu and reportedly “assured [the Qataris] that such a thing will not happen again on their soil.” That was the American response. Not a suspension of aid. Not a public rebuke. Not consequences of any kind. A phone call to Netanyahu and a verbal assurance to Qatar that “it will not happen again.”

Every Gulf capital watched this exchange. Every Gulf capital drew the same conclusion. If Israel could bomb Doha, on the soil of the country that hosts the largest US military base in the region, targeting negotiators of a US-mediated peace process, and the US response was a phone call and a verbal assurance, then no Gulf state was safe. The American security guarantee was empty. The umbrella did not exist. The rules-based international order that Western media insists on invoking applied to every country in the world except the one that had just launched the strike.

Eight days after Israel bombed Doha, Saudi Arabia signed the mutual defense pact with nuclear-armed Pakistan.

Eight days.

That is the timeline. That is the causation. Anyone who tries to describe the Saudi-Pakistan pact without mentioning the Doha attack is deliberately hiding what actually happened.

The Nuclear Umbrella Nobody Wants to Name

Now let’s talk about the part of this pact that Western analysts are being careful not to say out loud.

Pakistan is a nuclear-armed state. It has been since 1998. Pakistan developed its nuclear program in the 1980s and 1990s largely with reported financial support from Saudi Arabia, in the aftermath of India’s nuclear tests and the shifting security environment of the Cold War endgame. Multiple analysts, and at least one Pakistani diplomat on record, have suggested for over 20 years that Saudi Arabia could be brought under Pakistan’s nuclear umbrella if the security situation required it.

The Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement all but confirms it.

When Saudi Arabia signs an Article 5 collective defense pact with a nuclear-armed state, saying “aggression against one is aggression against both,” the plain reading of the text is that Pakistan’s nuclear deterrent now covers Saudi Arabia. If Saudi Arabia is attacked, Pakistan is obligated by treaty to respond as if it had been attacked itself. Pakistan possesses nuclear weapons. Pakistan therefore has the option, formally now, of using them in response to any attack on Saudi Arabia. This is what nuclear extended deterrence means. It is what the US provides to NATO members and to Japan and South Korea. It is what the Saudi-Pakistan pact appears to provide, without either country wanting to spell it out in undiplomatic language.

Read the historical significance of this carefully. Saudi Arabia is now the first Arab state protected by a nuclear deterrent that is not American and not Israeli. In the 80 years since World War II, every major Arab and Muslim state has been forced to choose between operating under the American security umbrella, or being labeled a rogue state and subjected to sanctions, isolation, and periodic bombing. There was no third option. Nuclear weapons in the region belonged to Israel and, functionally, to the American forces stationed at Al Udeid, Diego Garcia, and the fleet in the Fifth Fleet area of operations.

The Saudi-Pakistan pact created a third option. It quietly, formally, and structurally introduced a nuclear-backed security arrangement in the Muslim world that operates outside American control. The addition of Turkey extends the conventional-forces heft of the arrangement, but the underlying transformation was the September 2025 agreement. Turkey’s addition normalized it. Made it a bloc rather than a bilateral relationship. Made it expandable.

Iran is watching this with mixed feelings. Egypt is being courted. Indonesia has been mentioned in some analyses. Malaysia. Bangladesh. Kazakhstan. Uzbekistan. There is now a structural template for how a Muslim-majority nation can enter a collective defense arrangement without applying for NATO membership, without accepting American security terms, and without permanent exposure to US or Israeli aggression.

That is what changed on September 17, 2025, and expanded on August 7, 2026. That is why Western media is describing the pact with such caution. They understand what it is. They are just choosing not to say it clearly.

The Reframe: When the Bully Loses Its Shield

Now here is where the whole Western framing collapses.

Western analysts and Western media are covering the pact in the register of threat. Concerning. Destabilizing. New bloc. Escalatory. The framing consistently treats Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan as the actors introducing instability, and treats the previous arrangement (American hegemony) as the baseline of stability.

Look at that framing plainly. The last 20 years of Middle Eastern history included the American invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, the destruction of Libya, the support for the Saudi war in Yemen that produced the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, the ongoing US military presence in Syria, the Israeli assault on Lebanon in 2024, the Israeli destruction of Gaza that has killed over 60,000 Palestinians and displaced millions, the Israeli assassinations across five Muslim capitals (Beirut, Damascus, Sana’a, Tehran, and now Doha), the US-Israeli air campaign against Iran across multiple months of 2026, and the American strikes on Iranian territory as recently as three days ago. That is the “baseline of stability” the American-led security order has provided.

The response to countries deciding to protect themselves against that pattern is being described as “destabilizing.”

This is the Language of Empire operating in real time. When Western military action produces devastation, that is called stability, order, or counter-terrorism. When Muslim states organize to prevent themselves from being the next target of that devastation, that is called destabilizing, concerning, or escalatory. Same actions when the West does them become legitimate. The exact opposite actions when Muslim states do them become threats.

Here is the plain-language reframe. When a nuclear-armed bully has been attacking every country in a region with impunity for 20 years, defense is not aggression. Defense is survival. The mutual defense pact is not the introduction of instability. It is the response to instability that the American-led order has been imposing on the region for two decades. If the United States and Israel did not want a Muslim NATO to exist, they should not have spent 20 years teaching every Gulf state and every Muslim capital that the American security guarantee is worthless and that international law only applies to countries the West wants to punish.

Saudi Arabia did not build a nuclear-backed alliance because Saudi Arabia is aggressive. Saudi Arabia built it because Israel bombed the ally of an ally and the US did nothing about it. That is the operative sentence. Everything else in the framing is decoration.

Ask yourself the simplest possible question. If you were the leader of Qatar or Saudi Arabia or Turkey, and you had just watched Israel launch missiles into Doha targeting negotiators of a US-mediated ceasefire, on the soil of the country that hosts the largest US military base in your region, and the American response was a phone call, what would you do? Would you accept that the American security guarantee was still credible? Or would you start looking for allies who could actually protect you? Every serious answer to that question leads to the same conclusion. The Saudi-Pakistan-Turkey pact is not aggression. It is what any rational government would do in that position. The only reason it is being framed as a threat is that Western media serves an empire that has become accustomed to attacking without consequences.

That impunity is what is ending. And the empire is not framing this collapse honestly, so the empire’s media is describing the end of impunity as if it were the beginning of danger.

Connecting to the Bigger Picture

This pact does not exist in isolation. It is the largest single piece of a much broader realignment that I have been documenting across every piece of this year’s arc.

The West Africa piece I wrote showed the Alliance of Sahel States (Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger) seceding from the French colonial architecture that had governed West Africa since the 1960s. They kicked out French troops. They withdrew from ECOWAS. They created a 15,000-troop unified military force. They are building a common currency to escape the CFA franc. They aligned with Russia, China, Iran, and Turkey. That was the West African version of the same movement.

The Iran piece I wrote showed Iranian President Pezeshkian on his way to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit calling for restraint while the American president posted AI bombing videos on Truth Social. The SCO summit that Pezeshkian attended included Russia, China, India, Pakistan, and the Central Asian states. That is nearly half the world’s population meeting in a multilateral framework that operates entirely outside American influence.

Nigeria’s January 2025 accession to BRICS as a partner country brought Africa’s largest oil producer into the bloc most actively challenging the petrodollar. Iran’s negotiation of yuan-denominated tolls at the Strait of Hormuz. Saudi Arabia joining the mBridge central bank digital currency platform. The Alliance of Sahel States planning a common currency. Every one of these developments is a piece of the same shift.

Now add the Saudi-Turkey-Pakistan mutual defense pact to that picture. What you see is a global reordering happening across multiple continents simultaneously. In West Africa, sovereignty being reclaimed from French colonial architecture. In the Gulf, security being reclaimed from American hegemony. In Central Asia, multilateral frameworks being built through SCO. In Latin America, ongoing anti-imperial alignment across Venezuela, Cuba, Bolivia, Nicaragua, and increasingly Colombia. In the finance system, de-dollarization moving faster every quarter. And through all of it, BRICS expanding, adding partners, gaining members, growing.

The world is realigning around the collapse of the American security and financial order. That order was built in 1944 at Bretton Woods, in 1945 at the UN founding, in 1948 with the creation of Israel, in 1949 with NATO, in 1974 with the petrodollar arrangement. That whole architecture has been showing structural stress for years and is now visibly cracking. Every major move in 2025 and 2026 is another piece of the shift. The mutual defense pact signed in Mecca three weeks ago is not the biggest single move in the shift. It is one of them. But it may be the most consequential single move for Muslim-majority countries in half a century.

And the American state, in its current configuration, is not responding to this shift as a mature power would. It is not renegotiating its role, or accepting a multipolar reality, or adjusting its expectations. It is escalating rhetoric, escalating strikes, posting AI bombing videos on Truth Social, threatening secondary sanctions, and slapping travel bans on the very countries organizing to protect themselves. Every escalation is another confirmation to the rest of the world that the shift they have been building is necessary. The American reaction is providing the case for the pact more effectively than any Islamic diplomat ever could.

He is a Haitian man in Columbus, Ohio, who walked out of an ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations field office in Cincinnati on August 2, 2026, overcome with emotion, with an electronic monitor fitted to his left ankle. He had committed no crime. He had legal status three weeks earlier. He was one of hundreds of Haitians summoned to check-ins in Springfield, Ohio, in the days following the July 27 termination of Temporary Protected Status. Dozens of them walked out fitted with the same devices. The Springfield community leader Vilès Dorsainvil called what was happening to them “modern-day shackling.”

He is right. And what makes this piece necessary is that the country doing the shackling owes those Haitians a debt so old, so specific, and so morally undeniable that the ankle monitor turns from a policy detail into a historical accusation.

This is a piece about that debt. About what Haiti actually is and why it has been made to suffer for 220 years. About what the United States has done to Haiti, directly and through its colonial ally, since the 1800s. About what is happening right now to Haitian people on American soil. And about why the framework I have been building across every piece of this arc, the Language of Empire, the colonial playbook of Western capital, applies just as precisely to what is happening in Springfield, Ohio as it does to what is happening in West Africa or Iran.

Let me show you where the dots come from.

The Country That Broke Slavery

You cannot understand what is happening to Haitians in America today without understanding what Haiti actually is. Because Haiti is not just another poor Caribbean nation. Haiti is the country that broke slavery, and the world has been punishing them for it for 220 years.

In 1791, the enslaved people of the French colony of Saint-Domingue, at the time the wealthiest colony in the Americas, producing more sugar than all the British Caribbean combined, launched the largest and most successful slave revolt in modern history. For twelve years they fought the French, the British, and the Spanish. They defeated Napoleon’s army. And on January 1, 1804, they declared independence and named their new nation Haiti, becoming the first free Black republic in the Western Hemisphere and the second independent nation in the Americas after the United States.

Think about what that meant for the powers of the world. Every slaveholding nation, including the United States, had built its wealth on the premise that enslaved Black people could not and would not free themselves. Haiti disproved that premise in the most public possible way. The revolution was the ultimate refutation of the ideological foundation of slavery. And the response of the “enlightened” Western powers, including the young United States, was not to celebrate the extension of the “life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness” they claimed to believe in. It was to punish Haiti for daring to prove that Black self-liberation was possible.

The United States refused to recognize Haiti for 58 years, from 1804 until 1862, deep into the Civil War. Thomas Jefferson, who had written that all men are created equal, feared Haiti as a “cannibal republic” and worked to isolate it economically. Congress passed embargoes explicitly designed to strangle the young nation. European powers followed suit. The country that broke slavery was blockaded, isolated, and starved of trade for six decades by the very “democracies” that claimed to believe in the ideals Haiti had made real.

That was the first extraction. The economic isolation and diplomatic exclusion that prevented Haiti from developing its economy on its own terms.

The second extraction was much more direct.

The Debt That Impoverished a Nation for 122 Years

In 1825, twenty-one years after Haitian independence, France sent a fleet of warships to Port-au-Prince. Fourteen warships. Loaded with cannons pointed at the city. The message was clear. Either Haiti agreed to pay France “reparations” for the property France had lost in the revolution, meaning the enslaved people who had freed themselves, or France would invade, re-conquer the island, and re-enslave the population.

Haiti agreed to pay.

The initial sum demanded was 150 million gold francs. To put that in perspective, it was ten times what the United States had paid France for the entire Louisiana Territory in 1803, an area that encompassed 15 modern American states. Haiti was being asked to pay ten times the value of a third of the North American continent, as compensation to France for the crime of ending slavery on its own soil.

Haiti could not pay. Haiti did not have that kind of money. So Haiti was forced to take out loans from French banks, at compounded interest, to pay France for its own liberation. This became known as the “double debt.” Haiti was paying France directly, and Haiti was paying French banks to service the loans it had taken to pay France. The debt was renegotiated down to 90 million francs in 1838, but the underlying structure remained the same. Haiti was making payments for 122 years.

Haiti finished paying that debt in 1947.

Read that sentence again. The debt for freeing themselves from slavery, imposed in 1825, was not paid off until 1947. Six generations of Haitian people were born, lived, and died under the weight of a debt owed to the slavers their ancestors had defeated. By modern estimates, when you account for the compounded interest and the opportunity cost of what those payments could have funded, the total extraction from Haiti to France exceeded 21 billion dollars in today’s currency.

That is the single most important fact about Haitian poverty. Not culture. Not corruption. Not political instability. Extraction. When you hear anyone say Haiti is poor because Haitians can’t govern themselves, you are hearing a lie designed to hide the transfer of 21 billion dollars from Haiti to France over the course of six generations. Every school not built, every hospital not equipped, every road not paved, every irrigation system not developed, every industry not funded, from 1825 to 1947, was foreclosed by the payments being sent to the descendants of the slavers.

The other Caribbean nations that also emerged from slavery, but through gradual British emancipation rather than through revolutionary self-liberation, were not made to pay for their freedom. Only Haiti was. Only the nation that had proved slavery could be defeated. Because the point of the double debt was never really about the money. The point was to make sure that the world’s first free Black republic remained an example of failure, so that no other enslaved population would look at Haiti and see what was possible.

That was the plan. It worked. And the mechanism that made it work is the reason Haiti is where it is today.

The American Occupation and What Came After

If the French extraction was the foundational wound, the American intervention was the wound that never allowed it to heal.

From 1915 to 1934, the United States militarily occupied Haiti. Nineteen years. The occupation was carried out by the United States Marine Corps, initially justified on the grounds of protecting American business interests, particularly the National City Bank of New York, which held significant investments in Haiti and was concerned about political instability. The Marines seized Haiti’s central bank reserves. They took over the customs houses. They rewrote the Haitian constitution, in a version drafted by Franklin Delano Roosevelt when he was Assistant Secretary of the Navy, to allow foreign ownership of Haitian land, which had been constitutionally prohibited since independence precisely to prevent the recolonization Haitians had fought to escape.

The Marines instituted a forced labor system called the corvée, which required Haitian peasants to work on road-building projects without pay. This system was so brutal that Haitians described it as re-enslavement. Historical estimates place the number of Haitians killed during the occupation at over 15,000. The Marines faced armed Haitian resistance from a movement called the Cacos, whose leader Charlemagne Péralte was killed by American forces in 1919. His body was photographed by the Marines in a pose deliberately meant to evoke Christ’s crucifixion, and the photograph was distributed as propaganda to demoralize the resistance. That is the level of contempt with which the United States occupied and controlled Haiti during those nineteen years.

The occupation ended in 1934, but American control did not. The United States continued to manage Haiti’s finances, its military, and its political life through indirect means for decades afterward. When François “Papa Doc” Duvalier came to power in 1957 and established a brutal dictatorship, the United States backed him because he was anti-communist. When his son Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier continued the dictatorship after his father’s death in 1971, the United States kept backing him for the same reason. The Duvaliers stole between 500 million and 900 million dollars from the Haitian treasury during their thirty years in power, funneling much of it through American and European banks that were happy to hold the money.

When the Duvaliers were finally overthrown in 1986 and Haiti attempted to build a democracy, the United States continued to intervene in Haitian political life. Jean-Bertrand Aristide, a liberation theology priest who won Haiti’s first democratic election in 1990 on a platform of protecting the poor, was overthrown by a US-supported military coup in 1991, restored by American intervention in 1994 under conditions that required him to implement neoliberal economic reforms, and then removed again in 2004 in a coup that Aristide himself has publicly said was orchestrated by the United States and France. Aristide was flown into exile on a US government plane. He has said he was kidnapped.

Throughout this same period, the United States imposed neoliberal reforms on Haiti through the IMF and World Bank that devastated the Haitian economy. The most consequential was the destruction of Haitian rice farming. Haiti had been self-sufficient in rice production for its own population. In the 1980s and 1990s, US-backed policies forced Haiti to eliminate its tariffs on imported rice, allowing heavily subsidized American rice to flood the Haitian market. Haitian rice farmers, unable to compete with subsidized American producers, were driven out of business. Haiti became dependent on imported American rice, and the rural population that had been growing food was pushed into cities, particularly Port-au-Prince, where they lived in slums with no economic base. Former President Bill Clinton publicly apologized for this policy in 2010, saying “it may have been good for some of my farmers in Arkansas, but it has not worked. It was a mistake.” The apology did nothing to reverse the damage.

And now, right now, today, the guns arming the gangs terrorizing Haiti are trafficked from Florida gun shops. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigations have documented the pipeline. American-manufactured firearms, purchased legally in Florida and Georgia, smuggled into Haiti through informal networks, sold to the gangs that now control large portions of Port-au-Prince. The gangs did not appear from nowhere. They are armed by American weapons, funded by an economy destabilized by American policy, filling a power vacuum created by American political interference.

Every condition the United States State Department currently cites to describe Haiti as unstable, dangerous, or ungovernable is a condition the United States helped create. The instability is not Haiti’s failure. It is the accumulated damage of two centuries of extraction, occupation, coup installation, economic sabotage, and weapons trafficking, by the very country that is now using that instability as the pretext to strip legal protection from Haitians on American soil.

What Just Happened

On June 25, 2026, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled 6 to 3 that the administration could terminate Temporary Protected Status for approximately 350,000 Haitians living in the United States. Justice Samuel Alito wrote the majority opinion. In the ruling, the majority explicitly addressed the fact that President Trump had a long record of documented racist statements about Haiti and Haitians, including calling Haiti a “shithole country” during a 2018 Oval Office meeting and falsely claiming during the 2024 campaign that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio were “eating the dogs” and “eating the cats” of their neighbors. The majority concluded that these statements were “likely not enough” to prove that the termination of TPS was motivated by racial discrimination.

The termination officially took effect on July 27, 2026.

Two days later, in Springfield, Ohio, ICE began summoning Haitian residents to check-ins at the Cincinnati field office. Dozens of them walked out fitted with electronic ankle monitors. Springfield is home to approximately 15,000 Haitian immigrants, one of the largest concentrations of Haitians outside of Florida. The ankle monitor rollout is happening there, and it does not appear to be happening at similar scale in Boston, Miami, Chicago, or New York, which also have large Haitian populations. This is not a coincidence. Springfield was the exact town Trump personally targeted during the 2024 campaign with the “eating pets” lie. Public targeting followed by targeted enforcement infrastructure is not standard immigration policy. It is retaliation dressed in the vocabulary of enforcement.

The ankle monitors themselves are worth understanding for what they represent. In the standard ICE alternatives-to-detention program, monitoring has historically been done through wrist devices or check-in phone apps. Ankle monitors have traditionally been used for people with criminal records, missed court appearances, or existing deportation orders. These Haitians in Springfield have none of those things. They committed no crime. They had legal status three weeks earlier. Their legal status expired because the Supreme Court allowed the administration to terminate the TPS designation that had protected them since the earthquake of 2010. And now they are being fitted with the electronic devices that immigration enforcement has typically reserved for people with actual criminal history.

Vilès Dorsainvil, the Springfield-based community leader whose Haitian Community Help and Support Center has been supporting the affected families, told reporters that the devices “evoke the painful history of shackles worn during slavery.” He called it “modern-day shackling.” That is not a metaphor. That is a receipt. A Black community leader describing what the American state is doing to Black immigrants in Springfield, Ohio in the year 2026 as shackling, and no honest reader can say his framing is wrong. The visual is the visual. The intent is legible. And the historical resonance is unmistakable.

Meanwhile, the country these people would be deported to is a country the United States State Department itself classifies as Level 4, Do Not Travel, its highest possible travel advisory level, citing kidnapping, crime, civil unrest, terrorist activity, and poor healthcare. This is the position the American state is holding: Haiti is too dangerous for Americans to visit, but it is safe enough to deport Haitians to. That contradiction is not an error. It is a policy. Haitians are being sent back to a country that the United States acknowledges cannot guarantee their safety, precisely because the goal of the policy is not their safety. The goal is their removal.

The Colonial Debt Ledger

Now put all of this together and look at what the ledger actually shows.

France extracted the equivalent of 21 billion dollars from Haiti over 122 years, punishing Haiti for the crime of freeing itself from slavery. The United States isolated Haiti diplomatically for the first 58 years of its independence, made it impossible for the young nation to establish itself in the international economy. The United States militarily occupied Haiti for 19 years, killed over 15,000 Haitians, rewrote the constitution to enable foreign ownership, and instituted forced labor. The United States backed the Duvalier dictatorships for 30 years while they stole nearly a billion dollars from the Haitian treasury. The United States coup-installed and coup-removed democratically elected leaders. The United States destroyed Haitian rice farming through subsidized dumping. The United States is right now the source of the weapons arming the gangs that terrorize Port-au-Prince.

Two hundred and twenty years of extraction, intervention, and destabilization. That is the ledger.

Now, the United States is fitting electronic monitors on the ankles of the descendants of the people who freed themselves from slavery, preparing to deport them back to the country the United States helped make uninhabitable.

The moral case is not complicated. As the colonizer, and as the brother of the original colonizer, the United States owes Haitian people protective status. Not as charity. Not as generosity. Not as a favor. As a fraction of what has been extracted. As a partial acknowledgment of a debt so large that it cannot ever be fully paid but must at least be recognized. Temporary Protected Status was never enough. It was a legal minimum. It was the smallest possible gesture toward the reality that Haitians should not be sent back to conditions the United States is complicit in creating. And instead of expanding it to reflect the actual moral situation, the American state is terminating it. Stripping the legal minimum. Shackling the people it was meant to protect.

This is the debt America won’t pay. This is what a colonizing power looks like when it refuses to acknowledge what it owes. Not paying reparations. Not offering repair. Not even honoring the minimum legal protection that acknowledges the target country is unsafe. Actively rescinding the minimum. Actively fitting the monitors. Actively preparing the deportations.

Doing all of it while calling it “immigration enforcement,” “border security,” and “restoring the rule of law.” The Language of Empire, running domestically. Same operating manual as everything else in this arc. Different territory.

Yesterday, August 30, 2026, the United States bombed another Iranian island. It was the first major military strike in over a month. The “pause” that had been sold as diplomacy, that had been rebranded as an economic pressure campaign, that had been renamed Operation Economic Outcast just seven days ago, is over. The bombs are back.

Watch what happened in the next 24 hours, because it exposed the whole play. Not through analysis. Not through commentary. Through the plain, side-by-side behavior of two heads of state responding to the same escalation on the same day. Every word each of them said, every action each of them took, made the underlying reality visible in a way that decades of coverage have failed to.

The Iranian president was on his way to a diplomatic summit calling for restraint. The American president was on social media posting AI-generated videos of an Iranian oil terminal being blown up.

That is not commentary. That is the receipt.

This piece is about what those two behaviors reveal, why the Language of Empire framework I’ve been building predicts exactly this kind of exposure, and why the last week of American foreign policy has done more to expose the incoherence of the American project than a decade of investigative journalism combined.

Let me show you where the dots come from.

What Happened on Larak Island

The facts as reported. On the evening of August 30, US Central Command struck two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz. Larak is small, strategically located near the port of Bandar Abbas, overlooking the shipping lanes at the mouth of the Persian Gulf. CENTCOM described the operation as “limited, precise action against IRGC minelaying forces posing an imminent threat.” A US official told Al Jazeera Arabic that the launchers were preparing to fire rockets carrying naval mines into the Strait. In CENTCOM’s framing, this was defensive. Protecting civilian mariners. Protecting commercial shipping. Protecting the free flow of global commerce.

Iran responded within hours. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched dozens of explosive drones at Al Menhad Air Base in the United Arab Emirates, which houses US military helicopters and personnel. Iranian forces also launched ballistic missiles at two US military bases in Jordan. Jordan’s armed forces intercepted eight of the incoming missiles. The Iranian military stated that the retaliation was in response to the killing of IRGC members and civilians in the Larak strike.

That is the sequence. US strike, then Iranian response. The retaliation was proportional to the provocation. It targeted US military infrastructure, not civilian centers. And Iran publicly named the attack as retaliation, tying it directly to what had just been done to its own territory.

This is the fifth time this year we have seen this cycle. March strikes on Kharg Island. April strikes and countermeasures. May responses. July strikes. And now late August. Each cycle follows the same pattern. The United States escalates first, publicly and often accompanied by presidential rhetoric threatening more. Iran responds proportionally, targeting military rather than civilian assets. Then the cycle either pauses or intensifies depending on what the United States chooses to do next.

That pattern matters because it directly contradicts the vocabulary the American state uses to describe the conflict. “Aggression” is applied to the response. “Defense” is applied to the initial strike. But the sequence itself, in every cycle, has been American strikes followed by Iranian responses. If you actually look at the timeline instead of the vocabulary, the pattern of who is escalating is clear.

What the Iranian President Said

Now watch what Pezeshkian said in his first comments after the strike. He was on his way to Kyrgyzstan for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit, a meeting of leaders from Russia, China, Iran, India, Pakistan, and Central Asian states. Speaking to Iranian state media before he departed, he said:

“We do not seek war, that has been our message to the world.”

He added that Iran “will never remain silent in the face of any aggression and will respond decisively.” He acknowledged that Iran was prepared to defend itself. But the framing he chose was unmistakable. Diplomatic first. Restraint acknowledged as the goal. Response reserved for actual aggression. Warning issued before force applied.

He also stated publicly that a wider war would be devastating for the world and the global economy. That is not the language of a state that wants escalation. That is the language of a head of state who is trying to prevent escalation, thinking beyond his own borders to the consequences for global markets, global trade, and other countries that would be affected.

This is a man who was almost assassinated by Israel in June 2025. According to Iranian officials and Fars News, Israel struck a building in western Tehran where Pezeshkian was attending a closed-door meeting of the Supreme National Security Council with the country’s judiciary chief and parliament speaker. Six missiles were used, modeled after Israel’s 2024 assassination of Hassan Nasrallah. Pezeshkian was injured in the leg. He escaped through a pre-installed emergency hatch. Other officials sustained minor injuries. The strike killed several senior Iranian figures earlier in the same 12-day war, including the IRGC commander and armed forces chief.

Two months later, a man who barely survived a targeted assassination attempt by an American ally is publicly saying his country does not seek war. That is not weakness. That is not fear. That is a head of state making the decision that leadership requires him to make: to keep the door open to de-escalation even when everything in him would justify closing it.

Now compare that to what the American president was doing on the same day.

What the American President Did

Within hours of the strike and Iran’s response, Donald Trump posted an AI-generated video on Truth Social depicting explosions at Kharg Island, Iran’s main oil export hub, the terminal that ships 90% of Iran’s oil exports and represents the single most important piece of Iranian civilian energy infrastructure.

He then told Fox News’ Trey Yingst by phone: “We’re going to hit them hard.”

In another Truth Social post he called Iran “a failed nation” whose “leadership is in total disarray and incapable of properly representing the country.”

Set the language aside for a moment and look at just the behavior. The head of the country that struck first, the country whose military just fired on foreign soil and killed people, is posting AI-generated bombing videos on social media. He is threatening additional strikes. He is calling the country he just attacked “a failed nation” whose leadership is “in disarray.”

That is not the language of a head of state managing a crisis. That is not diplomacy. That is not deterrence in any coherent sense. That is a wounded ego processing frustration in public, using the machinery of state as an audience for personal grievance.

And here is the deepest problem. There is no strategic through-line. Seven days before the Larak strike, on August 24, 2026, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent held a press conference to announce what he called Iran’s “Economic D-Day.” Operation Economic Outcast. Nearly 60 corporations, individuals, and vessels sanctioned in a single day. Bessent called it “the single greatest financial offensive ever marshaled against an adversary.” The framing was clear: this was the strategy. Economic strangulation. No need for kinetic action. Wait as long as it takes.

Seven days later, we are back to bombs.

If Operation Economic Outcast was really the strategy, why did it need to be supplemented with military strikes seven days after its launch? If the sanctions were going to break Iran, why did the United States feel the need to escalate militarily before the ink was even dry on the sanctions list? The answer is uncomfortable but simple. There is no strategy. There is only reaction. The economic pressure hasn’t produced the concessions the administration wanted, so it added military pressure. The military pressure hasn’t produced them either, so it added rhetoric. The rhetoric hasn’t produced them either, so it escalated to AI-generated bombing videos on Truth Social. Every layer is louder than the last because the underlying situation isn’t improving.

This is what an incoherent superpower looks like. Not weakness in the classical sense. But an inability to sustain a coherent policy through more than one news cycle, an inability to define what victory would even mean, an inability to admit that the previous week’s grand announcement has already collapsed.

The Mirror

Now put the two behaviors side by side. Same day. Same escalation.

The Iranian president: on his way to a multilateral diplomatic summit. Publicly stating that Iran does not seek war. Warning against wider conflict. Framing the global economic consequences. Reserving military response only for continued aggression.

The American president: on Truth Social posting AI bombing videos. Telling Fox News “we’re going to hit them hard.” Calling the other country a “failed nation” and its leaders “in disarray.”

Now recall what the vocabulary of the last 46 years has said about these two countries. Iran is the “terrorist regime.” Iran is “unstable.” Iran is “aggressive.” Iran “cannot be trusted with diplomacy.” Iran “wants war.” Every reason given for four decades of hostility, sanctions, assassinations, and cyberattacks against Iran has rested on the premise that Iran is the destabilizing party and the United States is the responsible steward of regional and global peace.

Look at the mirror.

Which one of these two heads of state behaved like a terror state yesterday? Which one behaved like a stable, mature power? Which one wanted war? Which one was trying to prevent it? Which one used the machinery of the state to threaten annihilation of civilian infrastructure? Which one called for restraint?

Every accusation the empire has made against Iran for 46 years is a projection. That is not opinion. That is the empirical record of yesterday’s news cycle, visible to anyone who reads both statements side by side without the filter of American media framing.

This is why I have been building the Language of Empire framework across every piece of this arc. The vocabulary is designed to prevent this side-by-side comparison from being noticed. When American media covers Iran, it uses one register: “terror sponsor,” “regime,” “aggressive,” “destabilizing.” When it covers American action against Iran, it uses another register: “defense,” “protection of shipping,” “measured response,” “counter-terrorism.” Same actions when Iran does them are described as threats. Same actions when the United States does them are described as legitimate. The vocabulary is doing the ideological work that the raw facts cannot support.

Yesterday’s news cycle broke through that vocabulary because the raw behavior was too vivid to spin. A president posting AI bombing videos while calling another country “failed” is a specific kind of visible instability that no adjective can rehabilitate. A president calling for restraint on his way to a diplomatic summit while his country was under fire is a specific kind of visible leadership that no adjective can obscure.

Every accusation is a confession. Every insult the empire hurls at its enemies is a description of something the empire itself is doing. When American media calls Iran “a failed nation,” look at who is failing to sustain a coherent foreign policy through consecutive weeks. When they call Iran “aggressive,” look at who struck first in every cycle this year. When they call Iran “terroristic,” look at who is threatening to obliterate an oil terminal that supplies 90% of another country’s civilian energy exports. When they call the Iranian leadership “in disarray,” look at who is running a foreign policy that changes strategic direction every seven days.

The vocabulary was never a description of reality. It was a mirror held up in the wrong direction. Yesterday, the mirror turned around.

Why This Is Happening Now

The reason the incoherence is becoming visible now is that the American project is genuinely overextended in a way it has not been in the modern era. Understanding this doesn’t require conspiracy or partisan analysis. It requires only looking at where the American state has committed itself in the last two years.

There is the ongoing conflict with Iran. There is continued financial and military support for Israel’s operations. There is the ongoing war in Ukraine, which requires American munitions, financial commitments, and intelligence sharing. There is the trade war with China, which has escalated repeatedly in the last year. There is the increasingly militarized posture in the Indo-Pacific, with new base agreements in the Philippines and expanded operations in the South China Sea. There is the developing situation in West Africa I covered last week, with special forces deployment in Nigeria and travel bans on the Alliance of Sahel States. There is the domestic enforcement infrastructure being deployed against migrant communities. There is the retraction of soft-power institutions, from USAID to the State Department’s public diplomacy arms.

Every one of these commitments requires resources. Munitions, personnel, financial reserves, diplomatic capacity, intelligence bandwidth. The American state has expanded its commitments faster than it has expanded its capacity to sustain them. General Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, privately warned the White House last month that air-defense interceptor stockpiles in Central Command were running dangerously low. That was the reason the Iran military campaign had paused. The pause was not diplomacy. It was a munitions shortage.

Seven days ago, the administration announced Operation Economic Outcast as a way to keep pressure on Iran without needing to fire more missiles. It was a plausible pivot on paper. But sanctions strategies work over quarters and years, not days, and they require patience the administration does not have. So the pressure to be seen “doing something” led to Sunday’s strike on Larak Island. Which led to Iran’s response. Which led to Trump’s Truth Social videos. Which will now require another response. Which will consume more of the munitions the joint chiefs already said were running short.

This is what strategic overextension looks like in real time. Not a movie collapse. A slow, visible incoherence, where every choice creates a problem the next choice has to react to, and each reaction depletes the resources needed to sustain the response.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the map, the countries the American empire has been trying to isolate are meeting in Kyrgyzstan. The Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit that Pezeshkian attended yesterday brought together Russia, China, Iran, India, Pakistan, and the Central Asian states. That bloc represents nearly half the world’s population and a growing share of global economic output. And while the American president was posting AI bombing videos, the SCO leaders were building the trade relationships, currency mechanisms, and security cooperation that will outlast the incoherence they were watching from Washington.

The world is choosing sides. Yesterday’s news cycle made clear which side has been behaving like adults and which side has been performing rage for a domestic audience while the strategic ground shifts beneath its feet.

The Colonial Playbook, Exposed

This is what I meant when I said the Language of Empire is not just a rhetorical framework. It is the operating manual by which colonial and neocolonial powers have justified their extractions and interventions for centuries. The vocabulary that describes the extraction as aid, the invasion as protection, the sanctions as discipline, and the target country’s response as aggression, was refined over 200 years to accomplish one thing: make Western action legitimate no matter what the West actually does, and delegitimize non-Western resistance no matter how proportionate it is.

Yesterday’s news cycle broke that vocabulary because the raw behavior was too visible to reframe. When the president of the United States posts AI bombing videos while calling the country he just struck “failed” and “in disarray,” even the most sophisticated language of empire cannot fully absorb the image. The projection becomes visible. The mirror turns around.

This is why the empire’s response to being exposed is always to escalate the rhetoric. When the vocabulary starts failing, the empire doesn’t reconsider. It doubles down. More AI videos. Louder threats. More names for the target country. More news cycles trying to overwhelm the moment of exposure with fresh outrage. The hope is that if the noise is loud enough, the mirror will stop working, and audiences will forget the moment when they saw what was actually happening.

The Language of Empire is the Western capital’s colonial playbook. Every extraction across the Global South for centuries has been justified with the same script. “We are civilizing.” “We are protecting.” “We are stabilizing.” “We are bringing order.” Meanwhile the actual behavior on the ground has been extraction, violence, coup installation, and economic strangulation. Yesterday’s news cycle is the same playbook being run on Iran, with the same script and the same reality gap between what the West says it is doing and what it is actually doing.

The framework predicts exactly what we saw. That is why the framework matters. Once you see the pattern, every escalation, every insult, every accusation the empire makes against its enemies becomes readable as a projection of what the empire itself is doing.

Somebody said on Al Jazeera this morning that we should “study” other parts of Africa with low crime to see what makes them different from Nigeria. Just study them, they said. Compare and see what’s causing the difference.

Baby, we don’t need to study it. Just look at the map.

Every resource-rich African nation is in one of three conditions. They have lost their sovereignty and now operate as Western clients in everything but formal name. Or they are in acute poverty and their people are suffering under structural adjustment. Or, if they resist too directly, they get the Sudan situation. Complete collapse. Blood in the streets. Millions displaced.

Congo. Sudan. South Sudan. Libya. Sierra Leone. Liberia. Angola. Chad. Equatorial Guinea. Nigeria. The academic literature has a name for this pattern. They call it the “resource curse.” That framing is polite. It is also the whole trick, because “curse” makes it sound like bad luck or a natural affliction rather than what it actually is. It is colonialism. They just changed the vocabulary. It is the word the empire spent 60 years trying to bury with words like “development,” “aid,” “reform,” and “partnership,” precisely because it names what’s happening truthfully. Not colonialism from a distant past that we have moved beyond, but colonialism still running, refined into a modern operating system, dressed up in new vocabulary. The flags came down in the 1960s. The extraction never stopped. The vocabulary got softer. The mechanisms got smarter. But the arrangement is the same one European powers set up when they carved the continent up at the Berlin Conference in 1884, and the people who benefit are the descendants of the same institutions that benefited then.

This piece is going to lay out what’s actually happening on that map, right now, in real time. What’s being done to Nigeria. What the Sahel Alliance is doing about it next door. And how the vocabulary Western media uses to describe both is doing the exact opposite of what it claims. It is not describing events. It is choosing which side of the map deserves protection and which side deserves demonization.

Let me show you where the dots come from.

The Three Conditions of Resource-Rich Africa

Before we look at Nigeria and the Sahel specifically, you have to see the larger pattern. Because if you can’t see the pattern, you can’t see what’s being done right now.

Academics call it the resource curse. Look at the “Big Five” African oil exporters they identify: Algeria, Angola, Libya, Nigeria, Sudan. Every one of them has either endured civil war, foreign invasion, structural adjustment programs that impoverished their populations, or all three. Look at the mineral-rich countries. The Democratic Republic of Congo, sitting on the world’s largest reserves of cobalt (the metal every smartphone, laptop, and electric vehicle depends on) and enormous coltan, tantalum, and gold deposits, has been in nearly continuous war for thirty years. Sierra Leone’s civil war was funded by blood diamonds. Sudan’s civil war and eventual split into Sudan and South Sudan was fundamentally about oil-rich territory. South Sudan today has 100 kilometers of paved road for its entire country while sitting on massive oil reserves. Libya, once the wealthiest per-capita nation in Africa under Gaddafi, has been in collapse since NATO destroyed the government in 2011, right after Gaddafi announced a plan for a gold-backed pan-African currency to compete with the CFA franc and the dollar.

The pattern is so consistent that even mainstream academic journals now describe it in blunt terms. One recent article in a scholarly journal put it this way: from the cobalt fields of the DRC to the oil basins of Sudan and Nigeria to the gold belts of Burkina Faso and Mali, “the pattern is disturbingly consistent. Resource wealth has too often functioned not as a ladder to development but as a trapdoor.” The author goes further: “the curse is not mystical, accidental, or cultural. It is structural, legal, political, and geopolitical.”

Say that last sentence again. It is structural, legal, political, and geopolitical.

That is academic language for: this was built. On purpose. By people. Through mechanisms that continue to operate today. That is the definition of a colonial system. When you strip away the polite framing, “resource curse” and “colonialism” are describing the same thing. One is the term the academy uses to make it publishable. The other is the term the empire spent 60 years trying to bury because it names the arrangement truthfully; and what those mechanisms produce, over and over, is one of three conditions. Captured sovereignty. Manufactured poverty. Or engineered collapse.

Nations that resist the first outcome get the second. Nations that resist the second get the third. That is the choice architecture the empire has constructed for resource-rich Africa. And this is important: when the pundits on Al Jazeera or the analysts on CNN say we should “study” why some parts of Africa have less crime or less instability than others, what they are really doing is pretending the pattern is a mystery. They ask the question in a way that treats each nation as a separate puzzle with a separate answer, when the actual answer is the same everywhere the map is worth extracting from. The question is designed to prevent the pattern from being seen.

We are going to see it.

What Is Happening to Nigeria Right Now

Nigeria is Africa’s biggest oil producer and its most populous nation. It is also the case study currently unfolding of what happens when a country with the natural leverage to break free is instead being pulled deeper into the neocolonial arrangement in real time.

Start with the geopolitical setup. In January 2025, Nigeria formally became a BRICS partner country. That is a significant move. BRICS, which now includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran, the UAE, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Saudi Arabia, is the bloc most actively challenging the petrodollar. Indian refiners are settling Russian crude purchases in Chinese yuan and UAE dirhams. Iran is charging yuan-denominated transit tolls at the Strait of Hormuz. Saudi Arabia joined mBridge, the cross-border central bank digital currency platform designed to bypass the dollar. Nigeria joining BRICS as a partner meant that Africa’s largest oil producer was formally aligning with the bloc trying to de-dollarize global oil trade. Nigeria also renewed a $2 billion currency swap arrangement with China. President Trump publicly threatened to sanction any BRICS member that abandoned the dollar as reserve currency.

That is the context. That is the leverage. Now watch what has happened since.

President Bola Tinubu, since taking office in 2023, has implemented reforms recommended by the International Monetary Fund. He removed the fuel subsidy that had protected Nigerian consumers from oil price shocks. He devalued the naira. He liberalized the currency exchange regime. The reforms won praise from investors and international economists. Al Jazeera, in its coverage from just last week, quoted analysts saying the reforms had “improved macroeconomic stability.”

Now watch what those same reforms did to the Nigerian people. Food prices exploded. Transport costs rose. Purchasing power collapsed. As of mid-2026, Nigerians are in the worst cost-of-living crisis in a generation. One Nigerian, a barrister named Oladipo Kazeem-Adebowale, put it simply to reporters: “This government has failed woefully. People are really suffering in the country now.” Another, Ajani Lola, called it “untold hardship.” This is the human face of “macroeconomic stability.” The IMF praises the numbers on the spreadsheet. The people cutting protein from their families’ meals live the actual policy.

Meanwhile, the oil sector itself is being restructured in a direction that should tell you everything about who the reforms are actually for. In April 2025, Tinubu sacked the entire board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation. He replaced the group CEO with Bayo Ojulari, whose previous position was Managing Director of SNEPCO, the deepwater subsidiary of Shell in the UK. That is not a Nigerian oil executive brought back to reform the industry from a Nigerian perspective. That is a former executive of a British oil major installed to run Nigeria’s national oil company. In March 2026, Tinubu launched the Presidential Petroleum Reform and Value Optimisation Taskforce. Its chair, Fola Adeola, is co-founder of Guaranty Trust Bank, one of Nigeria’s largest banks.

The reform architecture is built by and for the same international finance and oil interests that have extracted from Nigeria for six decades. Nigerian production, meanwhile, has collapsed. The country averaged 1.46 million barrels per day in 2025, some 500,000 below its own budget target, generating a revenue shortfall exceeding $6.8 billion in the first eight months of the year alone.

Then, the security intervention. On December 25, 2025, US forces launched airstrikes on Islamic State militants in northwest Nigeria. The Christmas Day framing was explicit. Trump publicly described it as protecting Christians. On May 15, 2026, a joint US-Nigerian operation deployed SEAL Team Six into Lake Chad Basin territory. Airstrikes and special forces raids continued for days. Senior ISWAP commander Abu-Bilal al-Minuki was killed. On July 3, 2026, US Africa Command announced it had withdrawn most personnel. It kept “intelligence assets in the region to continue to aid Nigeria.” Meaning surveillance. Meaning permanent infrastructure. Meaning a foothold.

Now, this week, in late August 2026, Al Jazeera is airing coverage of the ongoing kidnapping and banditry crisis in northwestern Nigeria. Fatalities in Zamfara are up 11.1% year-on-year despite the US operation. And the pundits are now suggesting that further international help, from the UK, from the US, might be needed. The neocolonial script writes itself. Every step of the escalation is presented as a response to a crisis, when the crisis is what the escalation was designed to enable.

That is Nigeria right now. A country that tried to reposition itself geopolitically, that is being pulled back into the Western orbit through economic pressure, security intervention, and personnel appointments, all narrated in the vocabulary of reform, cooperation, and aid.

Now look next door.

What the Sahel Alliance Is Doing Next Door

Because right on Nigeria’s northern border, something very different is happening. And it is the contrast between the two that reveals what is being done.

Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger are three former French colonies. Between 2020 and 2023, all three experienced military coups. The coups specifically overthrew governments that had been aligned with France and had failed to defeat the jihadist insurgencies operating in the Sahel. In September 2023, the three countries signed the Charter of Liptako-Gourma, establishing the Alliance of Sahel States, known by its French acronym AES. Its foundational principle: any attack on the sovereignty of one member is an attack on all, requiring mutual defense.

Then they went further. In January 2024, they jointly announced their withdrawal from ECOWAS, the West African economic community that had threatened military intervention to restore civilian rule in Niger. The withdrawal became official in January 2025. In March 2025, Mali formally withdrew from the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie, the French-speaking countries’ organization. Burkina Faso and Niger followed. They kicked out French troops. They brought in Russian military and security cooperation instead. They created a joint military force initially at 5,000 personnel, then increased to 15,000. In April 2026, that unified force carried out coordinated airstrikes across national borders in response to jihadist attacks. They are planning a common currency to escape the CFA franc, which had been pegged to the French treasury and represented one of the most durable financial mechanisms of French neocolonial control on the continent. They have deepened bilateral ties with Russia, China, Iran, and Turkey.

Read that list of actions again slowly. They are seceding from the colonial financial and military architecture in real time. And I say colonial deliberately, because that is what the arrangement they are breaking from actually is. The CFA franc pegged to the French treasury. French troops stationed in their countries. French corporations controlling their gold and uranium. French vetoes over their monetary policy through the Bank of France. That is not “neo” anything. That is straight colonialism, kept alive on life support past the formal independence dates, and the Sahel states have now unplugged the machines. In the space of five years, three of the poorest countries in Africa have executed one of the most systematic decolonization efforts the continent has seen since the 1960s independence movements.

What is Western media calling this? Instability. Concerning militarization. Authoritarianism. Coups. Juntas. In December 2025, the Trump administration announced an expanded travel ban targeting AES nations, taking effect January 1, 2026. The AES states responded with reciprocal travel restrictions on US citizens. Read that again. In December 2025 Trump launched airstrikes in Nigeria to protect Christians and called it counter-terrorism cooperation. In the same month he expanded a travel ban on the AES nations and called them a national security threat. Same region. Opposite framings. Determined not by what the governments are doing but by which financial architecture they are aligning with.

The AES states are not perfect. They are military governments. They face genuine jihadist violence. Their common currency plan and their unified force face real financial and logistical challenges. Nobody is claiming they have solved the problems of governance and security in the Sahel. What they are doing is refusing the terms of the neocolonial arrangement and building alternative institutions, at a scale and speed that has terrified the Western powers that considered West Africa their exclusive sphere.

That is what the empire cannot allow to succeed. Because if the AES model works, it becomes a template. And a template for pan-African sovereign realignment away from the West is precisely the outcome the entire postcolonial financial architecture was built to prevent.

The Seam Is Where They Meet

Now here is the observation that pulls the whole picture together, because this is where the argument becomes something more than commentary on foreign policy.

Look at the map. Not a political map. A regional map, showing borders and terrain.

Nigeria’s northern border runs directly against Niger. Which is in AES. Boko Haram, Islamic State West Africa Province, and various affiliated jihadist groups operate across all of these borders. They have for years. The Lake Chad Basin, where SEAL Team Six was deployed in May 2026, sits at the crossroads of Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon. It is the exact geographic point where Western-aligned Nigeria meets Russia-and-China-aligned Niger. Where the BRICS-flirting oil giant meets the fully-seceded Sahel Alliance.

The US special forces deployment did not go anywhere else. It went to the seam.

That is not a counterterrorism strategy. That is imperial infrastructure. The empire putting boots on the ground at the exact frontier where its African assets are draining away, under the vocabulary of counterterrorism because “counterterrorism” is the one framing that no American media outlet will question. The July 2026 withdrawal that kept “intelligence assets in the region” was not a drawdown. It was a transition from acute military presence to permanent surveillance presence at the geopolitically critical border between two Africas.

If you doubt this framing, ask yourself a simple question. If the goal was truly to defeat Boko Haram and ISWAP, why did the US wait until Nigeria became a BRICS partner to intervene? Why was the operation deployed to the northern border specifically, when jihadist activity has been documented across the country for over a decade? Why did the withdrawal leave intelligence assets specifically at that border? The answers become clear the moment you stop pretending the intervention was about the stated purpose.

This is exactly the same play the empire has run on every resource-rich African nation for sixty years. It ran it on Congo under Mobutu, keeping a compliant dictator in power for three decades because the cobalt and copper had to keep flowing. It ran it on Nigeria in the 1960s during the Biafran war, when the West sided with the federal government against the Igbo secession that would have taken control of the Niger Delta oil. It ran it on Libya in 2011, destroying Gaddafi’s government when he moved to launch the gold-backed pan-African currency. It ran it on Sudan, where oil-rich territory was central to every phase of the civil war. It is running it now on Nigeria and the Sahel simultaneously. The play is the same. The vocabulary is the same. The extraction is the same.

Same Actions, Different Language

Which brings us to what I have been calling the language of empire, and why the vocabulary matters as much as the actions.

When Western-aligned governments impose IMF-mandated austerity that removes fuel subsidies, devalues currency, and drives millions into poverty, that language calls it “reform.” When AES states reject those terms and build alternative institutions, that language calls it “instability.”

When the US deploys SEAL Team Six into a country’s northern border and keeps a permanent intelligence presence, that language calls it “counterterrorism cooperation.” When Russia sends security forces to a country at that country’s request, that language calls it “occupation” and “malign influence.”

When an ex-Shell UK executive is installed to run Nigeria’s national oil company, that language calls it “expertise” and “professional management.” When AES nationalizes gold and uranium mines that had been controlled by French companies, that language calls it “expropriation.”

When military governments align with Western powers, that language calls them “transitional governments.” When military governments align with Russia and China, that language calls them “juntas.”

When Israel bombs Gaza, that language calls it “self-defense.” When Iran responds to being bombed, that language calls it “aggression.”

Same actions. Different words. Every single time.

That is what the language of empire is. It is a vocabulary system designed to protect one side of the geopolitical map and demonize the other, regardless of what is actually happening on the ground. It is why the Al Jazeera pundit could sit there this morning and ask, in apparent good faith, why we don’t “study” the parts of Africa with less crime, as though the answer isn’t sitting right there on the map. The vocabulary is designed to make you not see the pattern. That is its function. That is its use.

When you learn to read past the vocabulary and look at the actions themselves, the map becomes readable. The pattern becomes obvious. And what you see is not a series of tragedies in unrelated countries. You see a system, with an operating manual, running the same play in different places.

The Petrodollar Is Fighting for Its Life

The reason all of this is escalating right now, in 2026, is that the petrodollar system is under the most credible stress test it has faced since it was built in 1974.

Iran is charging yuan-denominated tolls at the Strait of Hormuz. Indian refiners are settling Russian crude in yuan and dirhams. The BRICS bloc now represents 45% of the world’s population and over 35% of global GDP by purchasing power parity. Saudi Arabia joined the mBridge digital currency platform. The AES states are building a common currency. Nigeria joined BRICS as a partner. Even Kenya is signaling interest. The system that has underwritten American financial hegemony for half a century is being systematically dismantled by countries that have decided the arrangement no longer serves them.

Nigeria matters specifically because Nigeria is Africa’s largest oil producer. If Nigeria fully aligns with BRICS and starts settling oil in non-dollar currencies, the collapse accelerates dramatically. Nigeria is the swing vote. And the swing vote is why the pressure is being brought to bear right now. IMF reforms to keep the country dependent on dollar-denominated debt. Ex-Shell executive to keep the oil industry integrated with Western majors. Special forces at the northern border to physically prevent the Sahel-style realignment from spreading south. Al Jazeera coverage that frames Nigerian suffering as a domestic corruption problem rather than a structural extraction problem.

The petrodollar is fighting for its life in West Africa. That is why the intervention is happening now. That is why the vocabulary is so aggressive. That is why the “help” is arriving at the exact moment the target is trying to walk away.

And here is what makes this the most important geopolitical story in the world right now, and the one that Western media is most systematically failing to cover: if the empire loses West Africa, it loses the petrodollar. If it loses the petrodollar, it loses the mechanism by which American financial hegemony has funded seventy years of empire. Every other project the American state is running, from the Iran conflict I covered last week to the Israel defense contracts I covered the week before to the Palantir contracts and the Flock surveillance infrastructure I have been covering for months, all of it is downstream of the petrodollar. The petrodollar is the load-bearing wall of American empire.

And it is cracking. In West Africa. Right now.

What This Is Really Evidence Of

I close with the same standard I have held across every piece in this arc. I am not writing to convince anyone. The work is to reveal.

What the map reveals, once you learn to read it past the vocabulary of empire, is that resource-rich Africa is not suffering from a curse. It is being colonized. Still. Right now. The formal colonial era ended in the 1960s, and the extraction never stopped. It just changed clothes. The occupying armies became “counter-terrorism partnerships.” The colonial administrators became “IMF technical advisors.” The chartered companies became “multinational corporations with local subsidiaries.” The tribute payments became “debt service.” The colonial governor became a compliant national president backed by Western intelligence agencies. The mechanism has been refined for six decades, but the arrangement is the same one European powers set up in the 19th century, and the effect on the ground is identical: captured sovereignty, manufactured poverty, or engineered collapse for every resource-rich African nation.

West Africa in 2026 is the frontline of that design. Nigeria is being pulled deeper into the captured-sovereignty condition. The Sahel Alliance is attempting to break the pattern altogether. The empire’s military and financial infrastructure is being repositioned to prevent that break from succeeding. And the vocabulary being deployed to narrate all of this to Western audiences is doing exactly the job it was designed to do: making the pattern invisible while the extraction continues.

Every piece I have written for months, on the stages of capitalism, on the Declaration of Independence, on anti-boycott laws, on the Iran conflict, and now on West Africa, converges on the same underlying truth. What we call our economic and political systems in the West are not what they claim to be. They are extraction machines with elaborate vocabularies. The extraction machines protect the returns of a small class of capital owners, and the vocabularies are designed to prevent the rest of us from seeing what is being taken.

The pattern is now fully legible. What each of us does with the seeing is between us and our own conscience. But you cannot say anymore that you don’t know what is happening. The map is right there. Study it.

Yesterday, on August 24, 2026, the Treasury Secretary of the United States stood at a podium and announced what he called “Iran’s Economic D-Day.”

Scott Bessent named it Operation Economic Outcast. He called it “the single greatest financial offensive ever marshaled against an adversary.” He announced sanctions on nearly 60 corporations, individuals, and vessels in one day. He said Donald Trump was personally calling world leaders and telling them to stop trading with Iran, and that not even China, Iran’s largest trading partner, would be exempt from secondary sanctions if they refused to comply. The Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth was standing right there beside him, saying Iran will have “no choice” but to return to nuclear negotiations, and that kinetic strikes are still on the table if needed.

The framing was strength. Total isolation of an adversary. The largest economic offensive in history.

Read past the framing, and it’s a confession.

This is not what an administration does when its strategy is working. This is what an administration does when the military war has stalled, when the pillar of the original strategy has cracked, and when they need to keep the audience convinced they’re still winning by doubling down on the other pillar, the one that hasn’t worked in 46 years and isn’t going to start working now. And while they do it, ordinary Americans are footing the bill in inflation, in gas prices, in delayed interest rate cuts, in every corner of the economy where the largest oil supply disruption in the history of the global oil market is showing up.

Let me show you where the dots come from.

The Military War Stalled, and They Won’t Say It

For months, the United States and Israel have been running a joint military campaign against Iran. Twelve days of strikes. Multiple rounds. And what does the receipt actually show?

Iran didn’t fold. The Iranian government is still standing. The Iranian people are hardening around their government, not turning against it, because when a foreign power bombs your country, you don’t run into the arms of the foreign power. You dig in. Every intelligence and diplomatic assessment agrees on this: Iran believes any concession they make now won’t produce economic relief anyway, so they have no reason to concede.

More importantly, and this is the receipt that reveals everything, the military campaign paused not for diplomacy but for munitions. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Dan Caine, privately warned the White House that US weapons stockpiles in Central Command were running dangerously low, especially air-defense interceptors. This was reported by Axios sourcing at the end of July. Trump himself said publicly that he was pausing the bombing to give diplomacy a chance. What he did not say is that his own top general had told him the American arsenal couldn’t sustain the pace.

That’s what stalled the military war. Not restraint. Not victory. Stockpile depletion.

And here’s what makes it worse: the depletion isn’t a mystery. The United States has been sustaining two major theaters simultaneously, the Iran conflict and continuing operations in the Red Sea against the Houthis. The Navy has fired over 400 Standard Missiles and Tomahawks in Red Sea and Persian Gulf operations since early 2026. Raytheon produces roughly 125 SM-6 missiles per year. You don’t have to be a Pentagon planner to see that the math doesn’t hold. Every missile fired in one theater is a missile unavailable for the other. Every month the operations continue, the arsenal thins.

But you cannot admit that to the American public. You cannot say “we ran out of missiles.” So instead, you pivot to the economic front and claim it as a strategic choice, not a forced retreat. You call it Iran’s D-Day. You call it the greatest financial offensive in history. You make the pivot sound like escalation when it’s actually the containment strategy of an administration that just discovered the military strategy has a floor.

That’s what Operation Economic Outcast is. It’s the containment plan of an administration whose military plan has been quietly walked back by its own generals.

The Sanctions Strategy Has Been Failing for 46 Years

Now let’s talk about the economic war, the pillar they’re doubling down on.

Iran has been under some form of US sanctions since 1979. Forty-six years. Nearly half a century of the same tool being sharpened, expanded, and reapplied, cycle after cycle. Every administration since Carter has added to the stack. Every one has promised that this next round of sanctions would be the one that broke the regime.

Not one of them has been right.

What the sanctions have done is generate acute suffering for ordinary Iranian people. The receipts on this are current and brutal. As of the most recent Iranian government data, consumer prices rose 87.9% in July 2026 compared to a year earlier, with food and beverage inflation alone jumping more than 128%. The International Monetary Fund now projects Iran’s 2026 inflation at 68.9%, the highest figure since 1979, which is the year the sanctions started. Iran’s GDP is expected to shrink by 5.4% in 2026, down from a pre-conflict projection of 1.1% growth. The Iranian currency, the rial, has been in free fall.

A taxi driver named Ahmad Karimi told the Associated Press what this actually feels like on the ground: “We’re cutting out fruit, we’re cutting out protein, we’ve given up leisure, we even work on weekends.” That is the human face of 46 years of sanctions policy. Working people cutting protein from their families’ diets to survive a strategy their government didn’t design.

But the government isn’t collapsing. And this is the part every serious analyst agrees on. Not in any of the previous sanctions cycles. Not in this one. Iran has spent decades building structural resilience, a shadow banking system that operates outside the SWIFT dollar network, oil workarounds that get product to buyers through unregistered vessels and reflagging, alternative trading partnerships with China, Russia, India, and every other country the United States has alienated. Iran was prepared for this, because the American strategy has been telegraphed since 1979.

Even the American Enterprise Institute, which is not a soft or pro-Iran think tank, published analysis in July concluding that Tehran is nowhere near capitulation. The Institute for the Study of War came to the same conclusion. Iranian officials themselves have said publicly that they believe any concession they make will not produce economic relief, because the sanctions structure will continue no matter what they agree to. If your adversary is convinced concession buys nothing, concession is not a rational choice for them.

That is the strategy the United States just doubled down on. A strategy that has been failing continuously for 46 years, against an adversary that has been preparing for it for 46 years, that even the hawkish American think tanks admit is not working.

Which brings us to the part that matters most to the people reading this piece.

You Are Paying for This Too

Here is what nobody in the coverage of Operation Economic Outcast is centering, and it’s the part that should be in every headline.

The strategy is not just failing to break Iran. It is actively generating enormous costs for the American economy, costs the American public pays for while the same asset managers I’ve been tracking through this whole series make their portfolios more valuable off the fallout.

Start with oil. The International Energy Agency called the 2026 Iran conflict “the largest supply disruption in the history of the global oil market.” Brent crude oil hit $92 a barrel this week. In the most adverse Oxford Economics scenario, which is the scenario we’re currently living in, Iranian oil exports cease, global oil supply drops 4%, and Brent settles closer to $90 per barrel through the end of 2026. That is what we’re actually seeing.

Now watch what that does to your life. Oxford Economics projects that US inflation could rise to 4.5% as a direct result of the sustained oil price shock, enough to delay every interest rate cut the Federal Reserve was planning. The Dallas Fed published an even more precise analysis modeling the impact of the 2026 Iran conflict on US inflation and inflation expectations, treating the oil price shock as “a plausibly exogenous shock to the U.S. economy.” That’s economist language for: this is not the market working itself out. This is a policy choice imposing costs on American consumers.

What does that mean at your kitchen table? It means gas prices stay high. It means the price of every good that has to be shipped stays elevated because transportation costs are up. It means the food you buy costs more because agriculture runs on fossil fuel inputs. It means your rent stays high because commercial property owners pass their utility and transport cost increases through. It means your credit card interest stays elevated because the Fed can’t cut rates while inflation is being pushed up by the oil shock. It means every part of your budget that has been tightening for months is tightening more, not because the economy is naturally struggling but because a foreign policy strategy that isn’t even working is imposing costs on you personally.

The costs aren’t accidental. They aren’t unforeseen. They aren’t “the price of freedom.” They are the direct result of an administration that decided to pursue a policy that harms its own population in service of a strategy that doesn’t achieve its stated objectives.

And the people who do benefit? You already know who they are.

The Captured System’s Perfect Bet

BlackRock. Vanguard. State Street.

These are the same three asset managers I’ve been mapping across every piece of this series, the ones underneath the anti-boycott laws, the ones underneath the Israel defense contracts, the ones underneath the fossil fuel lobby that pushed anti-ESG laws through Republican state legislatures. And they are the exact same three that hold the largest institutional positions in every US defense contractor and every US oil company.

The military conflict, however stalled, continues to justify enormous defense spending. Every missile fired, every one that needs replacement, every new contract for air-defense interceptors flows into Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, Boeing, Northrop Grumman, companies in which these three asset managers hold controlling institutional positions. Vanguard alone owns roughly $10 billion of Lockheed Martin. BlackRock is the third-largest institutional investor. The economic pivot to sanctions doesn’t end the defense spending. It justifies keeping it elevated, because the “kinetic strikes still on the table” framing means the arsenal has to be replenished.

Now watch what happens with oil. When Iranian supply is squeezed out of global markets, oil prices go up. Higher oil prices directly benefit the American oil companies, ExxonMobil, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, in which these same three asset managers hold the largest institutional positions. The United States is now the largest LNG exporter on the planet, and the fossil fuel giants profit enormously from the supply disruption their government is engineering. Chevron’s earnings, Exxon’s earnings, every LNG exporter’s earnings, these all get better while ordinary Americans pay more at the pump.

And when the Federal Reserve is prevented from cutting interest rates because of the oil-driven inflation, the banks that hold consumer debt continue to collect at elevated interest rates for longer than they otherwise would have. Guess who holds the largest institutional positions in the biggest US banks, JPMorgan, Bank of America, Citigroup, Wells Fargo? The same three asset managers.

This is the captured system’s perfect bet. A strategy that doesn’t need to succeed to be profitable. A strategy that could fail against Iran indefinitely and still produce steady, elevated returns for the specific class of institutional owners whose interests the American political system now serves. Every month the war drags on, every month the sanctions fail to break the target, every month the oil prices stay elevated. That’s another month of enhanced returns for BlackRock, Vanguard, and State Street across defense, energy, and finance. And every month, the American consumer eats the cost.

That is why nobody in power is willing to admit that the strategy isn’t working. Because to the people making the actual decisions, not the elected officials but the asset owners who fund them, the strategy is working. Just not for the country. Not for the American people. Not for the Iranian people. For them.

This is what a captured republic looks like in real time, executing a policy that harms almost everyone involved while quietly generating exactly the returns the captors need.

The Boston Tea Party was a boycott.

Read that sentence again, because everything about what’s happening in this country right now runs through it. The founding act of the American Revolution. The one every schoolchild is taught to celebrate, the one reenacted every year in Boston Harbor, was a boycott. Colonists refused to buy the taxed tea. When the crown tried to force it on them anyway, they dumped it in the water. That was the spark. Not a vote. Not a courtroom filing. A boycott, escalated into direct action, that led to the Declaration of Independence three years later.

Two hundred and fifty years later, the country founded by that boycott has made the boycott illegal.

Not through some obvious act of tyranny. Not by outlawing speech outright. Through a much quieter mechanism, contract conditioning, pension fund mandates, and state coercion. That produces the same result while pretending nothing has changed. And when you look at who the boycott bans protect, and who profits from the protection, the picture that emerges is the clearest possible evidence that this is no longer a republic.

It’s a captured system, protecting the interests of the people who bought it.

Let me show you where the dots come from.

What the Laws Actually Do

There are two major types of anti-boycott laws on the books in the United States right now, and both use the same mechanism to work around the First Amendment.

The first type is anti-BDS laws, laws punishing the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions movement against Israel. As of the most recent count, more than 37 states have passed some form of anti-BDS legislation, and they now apply to over 250 million US citizens. The second type is anti-ESG laws, laws punishing companies and pension funds that divest from fossil fuels, firearms, or other “contested industries.” Texas SB 13 is the flagship. Nearly as many states have anti-ESG rules as have anti-BDS laws.

Both types work the same way. They can’t ban boycotts directly. That would be too obviously unconstitutional. So instead, they use contract conditioning. If you want a state contract, as a teacher, a lawyer, a journalist, a contractor, a speech pathologist, even a high school debate judge, you have to sign a pledge certifying that you don’t participate in the disfavored boycott. Refuse to sign, and you lose the contract. Lose the job. Lose the livelihood.

The Arkansas Times case is the one that made it plain. In 2018, a small alternative newspaper in Little Rock was told by the University of Arkansas that it had to sign a certification promising not to boycott Israel in order to renew its advertising contracts. The paper wasn’t boycotting anything. It refused to sign on principle. The ACLU sued. The Eighth Circuit ruled that the First Amendment doesn’t protect the right to boycott, and the Supreme Court declined to review the ruling. In Arkansas today, refusing to pledge that you don’t boycott Israel is grounds to lose your state business.

That is not a vibrant republic. That is a McCarthy-era loyalty oath dressed in 21st-century language. In the 1950s, government employees were forced to swear they weren’t members of the Communist Party or engaged in “subversive” advocacy. The courts eventually struck those oaths down as unconstitutional coercion. The state cannot force you to choose between your livelihood and your political beliefs. The anti-BDS pledges do exactly the same thing, and they’ve been rolled out across the country in the last decade with barely any coverage.

Multiple federal courts have ruled these laws violate the First Amendment. In February 2026, a Trump-appointed federal judge, Alan Albright, struck down Texas SB 13 on both First and Fourteenth Amendment grounds. Federal courts in Kansas and Arizona have also blocked anti-boycott laws. Thirteen of the country’s most prominent constitutional scholars, including former deans of Yale Law School, the University of Chicago Law School, and UC Berkeley Law, filed a brief calling this “an easy First Amendment case.” The ACLU has active cases in multiple states.

But the Eighth Circuit went the other way in Arkansas. The Supreme Court declined to weigh in. So we have a circuit split, and the constitutional right to boycott now depends on which state you happen to be standing in.

Follow the Money: The Same Three Asset Managers

Here is where the story stops being about one country’s foreign policy and starts being about who actually runs this system. Because when you trace the ownership underneath both types of anti-boycott laws, you find the exact same three entities.

BlackRock. Vanguard. State Street.

These are the three largest asset managers in the world. Together they hold controlling or near-controlling stakes in almost every major publicly-traded American corporation. BlackRock alone manages $10.5 trillion in assets. Vanguard is close behind. They are not household names for most Americans, but they own controlling pieces of the companies whose names are household names, Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet, ExxonMobil, Chevron, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Palantir. In a very literal sense, these three asset managers are the American economy.

Now watch what they own on both lanes of the anti-boycott capture.

On the Israel lane: A UN report released in July 2025 identified BlackRock and Vanguard as the main institutional investors behind the corporations most directly enabling the assault on Gaza. BlackRock is the second-largest institutional investor in Palantir (8.6%), Microsoft (7.8%), Amazon (6.6%), Alphabet (6.6%), and IBM (8.6%), the companies providing data and computing infrastructure to Israel’s military. It’s the third-largest investor in Lockheed Martin (7.2%) and Caterpillar (7.5%). Vanguard is the largest institutional investor in Caterpillar (9.8%), Chevron (8.9%), and Palantir (9.1%), and the second-largest in Lockheed Martin (9.2%) and Israel defense contractor Elbit Systems. Vanguard alone owns $10 billion of Lockheed Martin, the company that makes the F-35 fighters dropping bombs on Gaza. And Vanguard invested $546 million directly in Israel government treasury bonds issued in 2024 and 2025 to fund military spending that ballooned from 4.2% to 8.3% of Israel’s GDP. Over 90 US state and municipal pension funds have invested more than $3 billion in Israel bonds. Your teachers’ retirement fund is probably one of them.

On the fossil fuel lane: These same three asset managers hold the largest institutional positions in ExxonMobil, Chevron, and every major American oil and gas company. The United States is now the largest LNG exporter on the planet, a position that generates enormous revenue for the fossil fuel giants and directly boosts American GDP. When university endowments and pension funds began divesting from fossil fuels for climate reasons in the 2010s, they were pulling money out of positions held by these asset managers. That divestment threatened the returns of the underlying investments. The industry response was not to change. The response was to lobby state legislatures, particularly in fossil fuel states like Texas, to make divestment illegal. Texas SB 13 came out of that lobbying push. So did the anti-ESG laws in dozens of other states.

Two lanes. Same three asset managers. Same disease.

This is the pattern I’ve been mapping across the Dots Connected series. Consolidation → Control → Extraction. The consolidation is the concentration of ownership in a handful of asset managers. The control is the capture of the political process through Super PACs, revolving-door appointments, and lobbying at every level of government. The extraction is the ongoing transfer of wealth, through contracts, subsidies, tax breaks, and war spending, into the corporations these asset managers control. The anti-boycott laws are what happens when the Extraction layer needs to be protected against the last remaining nonviolent tool ordinary people have to disrupt it.

That’s why both types of anti-boycott laws exist. They aren’t about principle. They aren’t about foreign policy or energy policy in any sincere sense. They exist to make sure the ownership stays where it is, regardless of what the American people decide they want.

Why the Boycott Specifically

To see why the boycott is the tool being targeted, you have to understand what makes it structurally different from every other form of political action.

Voting can be captured. Both parties compete for the same Super PAC funding, which means both parties tend to converge on the positions that the money wants. A voter who wants a different foreign policy toward Israel, for example, will find that neither major party’s platform reflects that preference, because AIPAC and pro-Israel PACs pour money into races on both sides, ensuring that whoever wins is aligned with the money.

Courts can be captured. Judicial appointments run through the same political process that’s already been bought. Even when courts rule against the captured position, as multiple federal courts have on anti-BDS laws, the rulings can be ignored, appealed, or worked around through amendment. Arizona’s anti-boycott law was struck down by a federal judge in 2019. The legislature just amended it to apply to slightly larger contracts and refiled. The Supreme Court declined to review the Arkansas case, letting the pro-anti-boycott ruling stand.

Media can be captured. Ownership of every major American media outlet traces back to a small number of holding companies. And you already know where this ends. The asset managers with the largest institutional positions in those holding companies are BlackRock, Vanguard, and State Street. That’s why the coverage of these laws is so thin. The people who own the media are the same people who benefit from the boycotts being illegal.

The boycott bypasses all of that.

A boycott doesn’t need a party to run on it. It doesn’t need a court to permit it. It doesn’t need media to cover it, though media coverage helps. It works through millions of individual, simultaneous decisions to withdraw economic support from a target. Every person who stops buying a product. Every institution that divests from a stock. Every pension fund that pulls its money. Every university that refuses a contract. Each of those decisions is small on its own, but in aggregate, they can move markets, sink stock prices, and force behavioral change at scale.

That’s why the BDS movement is treated as an existential threat by every institution that benefits from the current arrangement. It doesn’t matter how few people join it in any single year. The mechanism is a threat, because it works in a way the captured political system cannot stop through the normal channels. Same with fossil fuel divestment. Same with any boycott targeting extraction industries. The boycott is the one democratic tool that cannot be bought off by the money it’s targeting.

Which is exactly why the money’s captured legislatures are working, state by state, to criminalize it.

The Founders Would Recognize This

Here is the part where the American story becomes almost unbearable to hold.

The Declaration of Independence, which I broke down in a previous piece, lists 27 grievances against King George III. One of them, near the top of the list, is that he had “imposed Taxes on us without our Consent.” The Boston Tea Party had happened three years earlier as the practical answer to that grievance. Colonists refused to buy the taxed tea; when the crown tried to force it, they dumped it. That was the founding act.

Two hundred and fifty years later, the country founded on that principle uses its state governments to force citizens to sign pledges that they don’t participate in boycotts of foreign governments and domestic industries. It ties their jobs and contracts to those pledges. It ignores federal court rulings that these laws violate the Constitution the government swore to defend.

If the founders looked at this arrangement, a distant, unaccountable financial power (BlackRock, Vanguard, State Street) capturing the government through PACs and revolving-door appointments, using state power to punish ordinary people for exercising the exact same tool the Revolution was founded on, they would recognize it instantly. They fought a war against it.

Here is what they wrote as the answer, one more time:

That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government.

The word is alter. And history shows the alter door works. The New Deal generation didn’t dismantle the country. They reclaimed it, through organizing, boycotts, strikes, and mass political action that forced the powerful to accept guardrails they’d never willingly consent to. The most successful moments of American reform have always been driven by the same tool the founders used. Every generation that has meaningfully improved this country has boycotted something. Every one.

The people who wrote and passed anti-boycott laws know this history. They passed the laws precisely because they know it. They understand that the boycott is the tool that works, the one lever ordinary people can pull that reaches the pockets of the powerful directly, without needing permission from any captured institution.

That’s why they’re making it illegal.

What This Is Really Evidence Of

I’m not writing this to convince anyone. I said in the last piece that the work is not to convince. The work is to reveal. And what the anti-boycott laws reveal is the clearest possible evidence of the argument I’ve been building for months now.

This is no longer a republic in any meaningful sense of the word. It is a captured system, protecting the specific corporate and financial interests that captured it, using state power to criminalize the last nonviolent tool ordinary people have to withdraw consent. The Declaration of Independence is now a document that celebrates a tactic the government makes you sign away your right to use.

That is the whole argument in one sentence. Every stage of the capitalism series pointed at this. The Declaration piece pointed at this. And now the anti-boycott laws are the receipt, the concrete legal proof, that the pattern is not theoretical. It is written into law across most of this country.

Which brings us back where we started. To the Boston Tea Party. To the founders who understood that a captured government cannot be reformed from within the channels the captors control. To the Montgomery Bus Boycott. To the boycott of apartheid South Africa. To every liberation movement that has ever succeeded in this country and every one that is trying to succeed right now.

They knew what the boycott was. They knew why it works. And they knew that a system that criminalizes it is telling on itself, announcing, in the plainest possible language, that it can no longer defend its own legitimacy through the normal democratic channels and must resort to force.

The most patriotic thing you can do this year is boycott whatever you believe deserves to be boycotted. Not because it’s easy. Not because you’re guaranteed to win. But because the founders wrote that right into the founding of this country, and every generation that has reclaimed a piece of the American promise has done it by exercising that right against the interests that tried to deny them.

Every week it looks like a new headline. Tariffs on Canada. A missile shortage in the Middle East. A blockade choking Cuba. Mass graves in Darfur. Millions displaced in eastern Congo. A ceasefire in Gaza that keeps killing people anyway. Scroll past them fast enough and they read like six unrelated fires.

They are not six fires. They are one house burning from the same match.

The arsenal is empty and they know it

Nearly six months into the war with Iran, the United States has burned through the stockpiles it was supposed to be able to fight two wars with at once. The Patriot interceptor inventory fell from roughly 2,330 before the war to somewhere between 759 and 827 now, a drop of at least 65 percent. The Army has used up virtually all of its surface to surface precision missiles. The Pentagon gave defense contractors 21 days to submit faster production plans, a timeline that admits the crisis it publicly denies.

Trump has spent months insisting the stockpiles are fine, calling reporting on the shortage a “manufactured story” and threatening to hunt down the people leaking the numbers. Former CIA Director Leon Panetta called the depletion “poor planning,” and pointed out the United States is running low on premier weapons at the exact moment Russia, China, and a Taiwan contingency all remain live threats. That is not strength. That is a country that walked into a war it underestimated, refused outside counsel, and is now discovering the bill.

Allies did not walk away. They were pushed

A superpower that needs friends does not usually threaten the ones it has left. This year the US threatened 100 percent tariffs on Canada over Ottawa’s trade posture toward China, pursued Greenland aggressively enough to push NATO to what reporting called a breaking point before backing down, and rattled European allies with tariff threats tied to that same Greenland push. The dollar responded exactly the way you would expect trust to respond: it fell to its weakest level against the euro in more than four years. Gold, the asset people buy when they no longer trust a currency’s stability, surged past five thousand dollars an ounce for the first time.

Economists at the Cato Institute have laid out the mechanism plainly. A trade war that isolates the US from global goods markets erodes the very thing that gives the dollar its safe haven status. If tariffs and retaliation stay elevated long enough, the euro could replace the dollar as the world’s anchor currency. That is not a hypothetical for the next generation. That is a live conversation happening now, because the country burned the trust that backed its currency the same way it burned the stockpile that backed its military threats.

The same hand doing the pressuring

None of this stayed contained to trade and munitions. The same posture, force first, consultation later, shows up wherever the US is applying pressure right now.

Cuba is living through what the International Crisis Group calls its most acute humanitarian crisis in decades, driven by a US oil blockade that started after the January raid that captured Venezuela’s Maduro. Venezuela stopped shipping oil to Cuba. Mexico stopped shipping oil to Cuba under threat of US tariffs. Cuba produces less than half the fuel it needs. The blackouts are not incidental, they are the intended outcome of a pressure campaign, and Trump has floated Cuba as the next place he could “have the honor of taking.”

Sudan is entering its third year of civil war with more than 12 million people displaced and 25 million, half the country, facing severe hunger. The Danish Refugee Council projects 2.1 million more will be forced from their homes by the end of this year alone.

Displacement numbers are the easy ones to get. Death tolls are not, and that gap is its own story. The war-tracking group ACLED has documented roughly 56,000 to 58,000 conflict fatalities, a number built from confirmed, reportable incidents. Nearly everyone who studies this war, including the US special envoy to Sudan in congressional testimony, says the real figure is far higher once you count people who died from starvation, collapsed hospitals, cut-off insulin and HIV medication, and disease outbreaks like cholera, on top of those killed outright. Those estimates run from 150,000 up to 400,000. Researchers at Yale’s Humanitarian Research Lab have said they cannot responsibly give a single number because there is no way to do body counts across most of the country right now.

El Fasher is the clearest example of how wide that gap gets. When the RSF seized the city in October 2025 after an 18 month siege, satellite analysis from Yale alone put the dead in that one city between 30,000 and 60,000. The UN’s human rights office has confirmed 6,000 killings there and called that confirmed number “undoubtedly significantly higher,” citing mass graves and blood visible in the streets from orbit. A UN investigator told German broadcaster DW the atrocities carry the hallmarks of genocide. So no, it is not tens of thousands total. At minimum it is tens of thousands confirmed, with credible estimates running into the hundreds of thousands, because nobody has been able to count the bodies.

The DRC is the clearest version of the pattern you’re describing, and it deserves its own paragraph. Clashes between the Rwanda-backed M23 and Congolese forces have pushed internal displacement past 7 million people, while an Ebola outbreak has now killed more than 1,850 people, worsened by insecurity blocking humanitarian access. At the same time, the DRC sits on roughly four-fifths of the world’s cobalt and a massive share of the coltan that goes into every phone and laptop on the planet. An estimated 25,000 to 40,000 children work those mines, some as young as six, digging cobalt and coltan by hand for a global battery and electronics supply chain that never sees their faces. Landslides at mines like Rubaya, which M23 controls, have killed dozens of children in a single collapse.

In December 2025, while that same M23 crisis was still active, the US brokered a “peace deal” between the DRC and Rwanda and signed its own Strategic Partnership Agreement granting American companies preferential access to Congolese copper, cobalt, lithium, and tantalum. Congolese lawyers and human rights defenders have since filed a constitutional challenge, arguing the deal was never put to their own parliament. US firms have already closed acquisitions under it. The fighting has not stopped. Rwanda’s military was sanctioned by the US in March for continuing to back the same militia occupying the mineral-rich territory the agreement covers. That is the mechanism laid bare: a crisis becomes the doorway, and whoever brokers the “peace” walks out with the extraction rights while the people standing on top of the wealth stay the poorest and most worked people on the continent.

In Gaza, the ceasefire announced in October 2025 has not stopped the killing. More than 1,250 Palestinians have been killed since that ceasefire began, with July marking the highest monthly death toll of the year. UN experts have condemned the “sharp deterioration” of an already catastrophic situation. Roughly 82 percent of structures in Gaza are damaged or destroyed. A ceasefire that keeps producing bodies is not a ceasefire. It is erasure on a slower clock.

Decades-long treaty allies have spent the last several months getting publicly threatened, economically punished, and dismissed by the Trump administration for not fully committing to the war with Iran. Meanwhile, the one country actively conducting military operations throughout this entire conflict faces none of that same pressure. That contrast says everything about what this relationship actually is.

The UK Gets Burned for Saying No

When the US wanted NATO allies to help with strikes against Iran, the UK initially declined a request to use British military bases for offensive operations. Prime Minister Keir Starmer later granted limited use of UK bases for what was described as “defensive” strikes, but the initial refusal created a real rift.

Trump’s response was public and direct. During a White House meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Trump called the UK’s conduct “very, very uncooperative” and “shocking.” He separately told reporters he wasn’t happy with the UK either.

It escalated further. When the UK later considered sending genuine military support, two Royal Navy aircraft carriers, after Iran began striking other countries in the region, Trump rejected the offer outright. He posted on Truth Social that the US didn’t need “people that join Wars after we’ve already won,” and added a pointed warning: “we will remember.”

Spain Gets Threatened Financially

Spain also declined to let the US use its bases. Trump’s response went beyond public criticism. He said he had instructed Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to suspend “all dealings” with Spain over the decision, an economic threat directed at a NATO ally over a war Spain didn’t start and wasn’t obligated to join.

NATO as a Whole Gets Dismissed

The pattern held across the alliance. Trump said most NATO members had declined to join the operation against Iran, criticized the alliance directly, and said the US didn’t need their support. He held a private meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and, afterward, posted that NATO “wasn’t there when the US needed them” and wouldn’t be there if Washington needed them again. Reports at the time noted Trump had floated the idea of the US leaving the alliance entirely.

Compare that to Germany, which wasn’t asked to send troops and stayed largely uninvolved. Trump praised Germany’s conduct as “great” in the same meeting where he criticized the UK and Spain, showing the standard being applied isn’t about principle. It’s about compliance.

Everyone thinks they know what communism is. Most of what they know is the version their government needed them to be afraid of. Before you can see how that fear got used as a weapon, you have to separate the actual theory from what got built in its name.

What Marx Actually Described

Strip it down to the core claim. Under capitalism, the people who own the factories, the land, and the capital extract surplus value from the people who do the labor. That creates permanent class conflict. Marx’s proposed end state was a classless, stateless society, production owned in common, run for what people need instead of what generates profit for a small ownership class at the top. No permanent ruling party. No standing state apparatus lording over the workers it claims to represent. Socialism, in his framework, was only the transitional stage on the way there, not the destination itself.

That is the theory. Read plainly, it is not that different in spirit from what movements across history have wanted, people controlling the fruits of their own labor instead of watching it get extracted by someone above them.

What Actually Got Built

Now look at every large-scale attempt to build it. The Soviet Union. Maoist China. Cuba. In every case, a single party seized control of the state, explicitly framed as temporary, explicitly framed as acting on behalf of the workers until the state could wither away and hand control back to the people directly. Lenin said this himself, that party control was a transitional necessity.

That transition never ended anywhere it was tried. Not once, not in over a century of attempts. What actually persisted in each case was one party controlling production and distribution, deciding who ate and who didn’t, who could speak and who couldn’t, and calling that arrangement “the people,” when the people themselves had no more control over their conditions than they’d had under the system it replaced.

This is worth sitting with. A theory built entirely around dismantling concentrated power kept producing concentrated power instead, every single time it was attempted at scale.

This Critique Didn’t Come From The West

Here’s what almost never makes it into how this gets taught. The sharpest early critique of this pattern didn’t come from Cold War Washington. It came from inside the revolution itself, while it was still happening.

In March 1921, sailors at the Kronstadt naval base outside Petrograd, the same sailors Trotsky himself had once called “the pride and glory of the revolution,” rose up against the Bolshevik government they had helped install. Their demands were things like free elections, free speech for workers and peasants, and an end to one-party rule over economic life. The Bolshevik government crushed the uprising by force, with thousands of casualties on both sides.

The anarchists Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman, both of whom had initially supported the revolution, watched this happen and said plainly that it wasn’t a tragic necessity, it was the Party demonstrating it would use violence against any voice that wasn’t its own, even fellow revolutionaries. Lenin himself later called Kronstadt “the flash which lit up reality better than anything else,” a rare moment of honesty about what the uprising had actually exposed.

That is the origin of the argument that a small group seizing all the guns and all the grain “temporarily,” in the name of the people, has no built-in mechanism that forces it to ever let go. It’s not a talking point invented by a think tank decades later. It’s a warning that came from people who were there, watching it happen in real time, from inside the political left itself.

The Part That’s Actually About Us

Here’s where this connects back to everything I’ve traced in previous pieces about the language of empire. The United States and its allies have never actually cared whether a government was genuinely collectivized, genuinely run by workers, or just claimed to be. What determined the label was always one thing: whether that government still let Western capital extract from it.

Guatemala, 1954. Jacobo Árbenz was democratically elected and passed a modest land reform law, redistributing uncultivated land, much of it owned by the American-owned United Fruit Company, to landless peasants. The CIA ran Operation PBSUCCESS, jammed Guatemalan radio, and installed Carlos Castillo Armas, whose rule triggered a civil war lasting decades and ended in genocide against Indigenous Maya communities. Árbenz’s land reform affected roughly one percent of Guatemala’s landowners. He was not building a Soviet client state. He was redistributing unused farmland.

Iran, 1953. Mohammad Mossadegh was democratically elected and nationalized Iran’s oil industry, which had been controlled by the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, the British-owned predecessor to BP, for decades, with Iran receiving only a fraction of the profits from its own oil. Britain and the CIA ran Operation Ajax, using paid agitators and propaganda to engineer his overthrow, and reinstalled the Shah, whose secret police became one of the most feared instruments of repression in the region. Documents declassified decades later confirm the coup was about oil, not about stopping communism, even though “communist threat” was the public justification at the time.

Chile, 1973. Salvador Allende was democratically elected on a platform of nationalizing Chile’s copper industry and expanding social programs. Nixon ordered the CIA to, in his own words, “make the economy scream.” On September 11, 1973, General Augusto Pinochet seized power in a coup with documented U.S. backing, and the years that followed saw thousands of Chileans tortured, killed, or disappeared, under a government that was itself brutally authoritarian, just not resource-sovereign.

None of these three governments were run by “the workers” the way Marxist theory describes. They were democratically elected leaders trying to keep more of their own country’s resources inside their own country. That didn’t matter. The label got applied the moment they stopped letting outside capital take what it wanted, and once the label stuck, the coup, the torture, and the puppet government that followed all got filed under “stopping communism” instead of what it actually was.

The Same Play, Running Today

This is the throughline. The ideology was never actually the target. Resource sovereignty was the target, and the ideology was just whichever word did the job of making the intervention sound necessary to a domestic audience back home. Sovereignty movements today get called communist, authoritarian, unstable, whatever label fits the news cycle, regardless of what’s actually happening on the ground, for the exact same reason Árbenz, Mossadegh, and Allende got called communist threats when none of them were building anything close to what Marx actually described.

The failure of 20th century communism as it was actually practiced is real, and it deserves honest reckoning, not denial. But that failure and the West’s reflexive labeling of any resource-sovereign government as a “communist threat” are two separate stories that got fused into one convenient narrative. Untangling them is the whole point of this piece.

There is a specific kind of language that shows up right before a country loses control of its own resources. It comes from think tanks, State Department briefings, and Sunday morning news panels. It sounds careful, neutral, even compassionate. And once you learn to hear what it actually means, you cannot unhear it.

The Dictionary

“Authoritarian regime” means a government that controls its own resources rather than letting Western capital extract them.

“Failed state” means a nation that has been destabilized for decades, whose eventual collapse is then cited as proof that its people cannot govern themselves.

“Humanitarian intervention” means regime change with a press release. Look at Cuba. Decades of sanctions and isolation, dressed up as concern for the Cuban people while it starves them instead.

“Responsibility to protect” is the legal doctrine invented to make the previous line sound like international law instead of what it is.

“Rules-based international order” means a system in which the rules apply to everyone except the powers who wrote them.

“Democracy promotion” means installing governments friendly to Western capital.

“Stability” means preserving the extraction arrangement.

“Reform” means privatizing what used to belong to the people.

“State sponsor of terrorism” often means a country that refuses to host American military bases or refuses to sell its oil in dollars.

“International community” usually means the United States and a handful of its closest allies, speaking on behalf of a planet that never authorized them to.

“Sanctions” mean economic warfare against civilians, with the famine and disease counted as features, not accidents.

You do not have to take my word for any of it. The receipts are in the documents the empire wrote about itself.

Four Centuries, One Operation

In 1550, in the Spanish city of Valladolid, a scholar named Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda stood before the Spanish crown and argued that conquest of Indigenous peoples in the Americas was not just permitted but a moral obligation, that some people were naturally suited to be ruled by others. A Dominican friar named Bartolomé de las Casas argued the opposite side. The crown never issued a formal ruling. Sepúlveda’s reasoning is exactly what conquistadors and settlers kept using anyway.

In 1825, France sent fourteen warships carrying more than five hundred cannons to the coast of Haiti, the first nation in the world founded by a successful slave revolt. France’s offer was simple. Pay 150 million francs, more than triple Haiti’s entire national budget, to compensate former slaveholders for the “property” they had lost when Haiti freed itself, or face war. Haiti paid. It took until 1947, over a century, and the final decades of that debt were bought up by American banks. France did not repeal the ordinance until 2016, and to date has paid no reparations.

In 1960, the same year seventeen African nations declared independence, the U.S. Naval Institute published an essay by William H. Hessler titled, without irony, “Africa: The Blessings of Colonialism.” It argued that colonization had brought railroads, sanitation, and civilization to Africa, and that independence was arriving too soon for Africans to handle it responsibly.

This year, a sitting U.S. president described a minerals agreement with Ukraine by saying, “we can go in there at any time we want to take pretty much whatever we want.” No think tank language. No diplomatic cover. Just the quiet part, said out loud, because by now saying it plainly costs nothing.

Four different centuries. Four different vocabularies. The same operation running underneath all of them.

What Happens To The Countries That Try To Opt Out

In 2011, the United Nations ranked 187 countries by Human Development Index. Libya, under Gaddafi, ranked 64th, the highest of any country in Africa. Free healthcare. Free education. Oil wealth that actually reached ordinary people, with a literacy rate above 88 percent and life expectancy nearing 75 years. In that same 2011 report, the Democratic Republic of the Congo ranked dead last, 187 out of 187, despite sitting on the cobalt and coltan that power half the world’s phones today.

NATO intervention removed Gaddafi later that same year. Libya fractured. By 2017, CNN journalists had gone undercover and filmed men being sold at auction outside Tripoli for as little as four hundred dollars, “does anybody need a digger, he’ll dig,” while a UN Secretary-General called the footage horrifying enough to possibly constitute crimes against humanity. That intervention happened under a Democratic administration. That is when it became unmistakably clear to me that this was never a left versus right issue. It has always been the same bird, wearing two different colored feathers, taking turns holding the knife. What happened to Libya breaks my heart every time I sit with it, a nation that had actually built something for its people, dismantled in a matter of months and left to a fate that still has not recovered.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo, sitting on some of the most valuable mineral wealth on the planet, remains one of the poorest and least stable nations on Earth, propped up by extraction arrangements tracing back to colonial rule and never meaningfully interrupted since.

This month, a United Nations human rights panel condemned a fresh round of U.S. sanctions against Cuba as an attempt to force change on a sovereign state “through threats and coercion,” warning the country risks becoming what they called a “silent Gaza.” Children are reportedly dying because doctors cannot access basic medicine, a direct, documented result of decades of embargo tightened further this year.

Watch What They Call The One Who Says No

Right now, in Burkina Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traoré is doing the exact thing every empire manual warns against. He nationalized gold mines that had been majority foreign-owned. He banned the export of raw, unrefined gold. He is building the country’s first gold refinery so Burkina Faso stops shipping away its own wealth for someone else to profit on. He expelled French troops and the French central bank’s presence, and is working with Mali and Niger toward a shared gold-backed currency to replace the CFA franc, a currency system that has required these nations to deposit half their reserves in the French treasury since 1945, independence in name only.

In December 2025, Traoré announced Burkina Faso had achieved full food self-sufficiency, a nation once dependent on imports and aid now feeding itself through domestic mechanization and subsidy programs. The country is now funding a 64 billion dollar national development plan for 2026 through 2030, entirely with domestic resources, no Western loans attached. An eight lane, 332 kilometer highway is being built the same way.

What he has delivered to his own people in three years is more than what any Western hand ever left behind after a century of extraction. Every time a Western hand touched that region, it took, it exploited, and it left nothing behind but suffering. Now watch closely at what they call him for building instead of extracting.

I will say plainly what I said the last time I wrote about him. The material record is genuinely rare and worth naming loudly. Whether his internal governance ultimately serves the same liberation his economic policy is pointed toward is a live question, one the people of Burkina Faso are better positioned to answer than any outside commentary, mine included. What is not in question is the pattern this entire piece has traced across five centuries: every government that has tried to hold onto its own resources instead of letting outside capital extract them has been called something. Savage. Authoritarian. A failed state. A threat to stability. The word changes. The target does not.

I do not want their so-called democracy, the version exported at gunpoint by nations that do not practice it honestly back home. I want the version where people actually get to build their own government, in their own way, and decide for themselves what words come next, once we finally leave their table.

Texas just passed a law that makes possessing four grams of THC concentrate, less than the weight of a few paperclips, a third-degree felony. Two to ten years in prison. That number sat with me for weeks before I could write about it, because once I put it next to another number, the whole thing stopped looking like a drug policy and started looking like something else entirely.

The Numbers Nobody Wants Side By Side

A THC concentrate charge in Texas, one to four grams, carries two to ten years. Under one gram is still a state jail felony, 180 days to two years. This applies to oil, wax, vape cartridges, and edibles specifically, treated far more harshly under Texas law than dry flower, which stays a misdemeanor under two ounces.

Now look at federal sentencing data for child sexual abuse material. Possession only, no prior offense, no distribution, no production, averages under five years. Fifty-five months. That sits in the same neighborhood as a Texas THC felony, sometimes shorter.

I want to be precise here because precision is what protects an argument like this one. Contact offenses against children and CSAM production or distribution carry much longer sentences, some over twenty years. This is specifically about simple possession, the charge that actually applies to most people caught with this material on a device. That charge, for the most severe kind of harm a person can do, sits next to a THC vape cartridge on the sentencing chart.

Who Gets Built A Pipeline

Texas and Florida prisons have been running low on occupancy. That is not a rumor, that is bed count data I pulled when I did the piece on the prison system months ago. A new felony category with a low weight threshold is a new and steady stream of bodies into a system that needed bodies.

Black people are arrested for marijuana possession at nearly four times the rate of white people nationally, despite using at comparable rates. In Texas specifically, a 2022 analysis of arrests from 2017 to 2019 found Black people made up over 30 percent of possession arrests while being under 13 percent of the state’s population. That gap does not happen by accident. It happens because the system knows exactly who walks through which door.

This is not new architecture. This is the same architecture built the moment slavery was formally abolished, when the Thirteenth Amendment left an exception for punishment of a crime, and states responded with Black Codes, vagrancy laws, and convict leasing. The convict leasing system rented out incarcerated Black labor to plantations, railroads, and mines, and it thrived for decades after emancipation because the law made it legal to criminalize poverty and Blackness specifically. That system was never fully dismantled. It adapted.

The swing is the mechanism. Notice how wide these sentencing ranges run: two to ten years for THC concentrate, two to twenty for CSAM production, months to over a decade for the same statute depending on who’s sitting in the chair. That’s not sloppy lawmaking. A wide range means a judge or prosecutor can hand down the low end for someone who reminds them of themselves and the high end for someone who doesn’t. The law doesn’t have to say “charge Black defendants at the top of the range” out loud. It just has to leave the door open wide enough for discretion to do that work quietly, case by case, without ever showing up as a written policy anyone can point to.

The Files They Released And The Charges They Didn’t File

Millions of pages of Epstein files have been released. Over 3.5 million pages, thousands of videos, thousands of images. A network of powerful, wealthy men documented across schedules, emails, and flight logs.

Two people have ever been criminally charged in the United States in connection with this. Epstein, who died before trial. Maxwell, serving twenty years.

The Department of Justice conducted what it called an exhaustive review and stated there was no evidence of an incriminating client list and no grounds for further prosecution. That conclusion has been publicly reaffirmed this year.

Meanwhile, at least nine separate investigations have opened in eight other countries plus the EU’s anti-fraud unit, off the exact same documents. The country where the crimes happened, holding the actual case files, has produced zero new prosecutions.

One of the buried documents is a 2007 draft indictment that would have charged not just Epstein but three of his staff who allegedly helped run the operation. That indictment was shelved. Epstein was not federally charged until over a decade later, in 2019.

If this had been a drug trafficking ring, everyone in that operation gets charged. The driver, the person answering the phone, the person managing the books. Prosecutors know how to build that case. They drafted it in 2007. They just never filed it.

South Korea has been a US treaty ally since 1953. The whole point of that alliance was protection from North Korea, a nuclear-armed, authoritarian neighbor. That’s the deal. That’s what it was built on.

This week, the deal got exposed for what it actually is.

The Announcement

On Sunday, August 16, 2026, President Trump ordered Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to “substantially reduce” the joint US-South Korea military exercises known as Ulchi Freedom Shield, set to begin the following day. Trump made the announcement on Truth Social, citing two reasons: cost, and his “very good relationship” with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

He also noted that South Korea had declined to help the US “denuclearize” Iran, and described North Korea as “unthreatening and respectful” during his presidency.

Read that again. The joint exercises meant to defend South Korea from North Korea are being cut back because South Korea wouldn’t help the US with an unrelated war against Iran, while the actual nuclear-armed adversary gets called “unthreatening.”

The Alliance Was Already Being Stripped for Parts

This didn’t come out of nowhere. The US already removed its own nuclear weapons from South Korean soil back in 1991, leaving Seoul dependent on an extended “nuclear umbrella” promise rather than weapons actually stationed on the ground.

Then, during the escalation with Iran earlier this year, the US began pulling its own military hardware out of South Korea, not to protect its ally, but to resupply its own war effort. Officials confirmed the Army moved parts of the THAAD anti-missile system out of South Korea to the Middle East, and South Korean sources confirmed Patriot air defense systems were also prepared for redeployment. Over a thousand guided munitions were withdrawn from Korea before the Iran war began.

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung confirmed all of it publicly, and said something that should stop you: “We oppose the withdrawal of some US air defence weapons used for our country’s military needs, but it is also a harsh reality that we cannot completely impose our opinion.”

That’s not a partnership. That’s an ally getting stripped for parts, then blamed when it won’t sign on for more.

The Nuclear Excuse Doesn’t Hold Up

The stated justification for confronting Iran has always centered on nuclear weapons. But look at what’s actually documented.

Iran’s Supreme Leader has maintained a fatwa, a religious ruling, declaring nuclear weapons “absolutely haram,” meaning forbidden under Islamic law. Iranian officials first invoked this at an IAEA meeting back in 2005, and have repeated it consistently since. Iran’s government has maintained that its nuclear program is for domestic energy, not weapons.

Iran was also one of the original 62 signatories to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty when it went into effect in 1970, and remained a member through this entire conflict, subject to international inspections under that framework.

The Land Before 1917

Pull up a map of the region from before 1948 and you won’t find Israel on it. What you’ll find is Palestine, and for centuries before that, it was Ottoman territory where Muslim and Christian Arabs lived side by side.

The earliest usable numbers come from the Ottoman census of 1871-72. Excluding Bedouin populations, who Ottoman census-takers routinely left out, the total population of Palestine was recorded at 381,954. Of that number, roughly 85 percent were Muslim, 11 percent Christian, and about 4 percent Jewish. That’s the demographic reality of the land for generations before anyone drew new borders on it: an overwhelming Arab majority, Muslim and Christian communities coexisting on the same land.

The First Official Count

When the British took over administration of Palestine after World War I, they conducted the first modern census in 1922. The results: 757,182 people total. Broken down, that’s 590,890 Muslims, 73,024 Christians, and 83,794 Jews. Combined, Muslim and Christian Arabs made up roughly 88 percent of the population. Jews made up about 11 percent.

This is the baseline. This is what the land looked like the moment the British Mandate began, the moment the door opened for what would become mass Jewish immigration into Palestine.

The Shift

By the second British census in 1931, the total population had grown to 1,035,821. Here’s the number that matters: the Jewish population had grown by 108 percent in just nine years. That’s not natural population growth, births outpacing deaths in a settled community. That’s immigration, concentrated and rapid, arriving in less than a decade.

By March 1947, on the eve of the war that would create the state of Israel, the non-Jewish population, again, almost entirely Muslim and Christian Arab, stood at 1,319,434. Jewish immigration had continued to accelerate through the 1930s and 1940s, driven by Zionist organizing and by Jewish refugees fleeing persecution in Europe. Arabs were still the clear majority of the population on the land. But the demographic balance that had held for centuries had been fundamentally altered in roughly 30 years, not through gradual coexistence, but through a sustained, externally organized immigration project layered on top of an existing, rooted population.

Before Any of This: The Land

Pull up a map from before 1948 and Israel isn’t on it. For centuries, the land was Palestine, home to Muslim and Christian Arabs living side by side. The Ottoman census of 1871-72 recorded the population at roughly 382,000, about 85 percent Muslim, 11 percent Christian, and 4 percent Jewish.

In 1948, roughly 700,000 Palestinians were displaced in what’s known as the Nakba. A demographic reality that had held for centuries was reshaped within a single generation. This is the part of the story that gets skipped when the narrative starts in 1948, or worse, starts on October 7, 2023. The land had a population, a majority population, long before any of what follows was set into motion.

The Buildup

Before October 7, 2023, there’s over a decade of paper trail showing Israel didn’t just tolerate Hamas’s rise in Gaza, it actively enabled it.

Between 2007 and 2014, Qatari funding reached Hamas largely without international oversight. After Israel’s 2014 war on Gaza, a new system funneled roughly $30 million a month into the Strip, officially for fuel, welfare payments, and government salaries. A leaked 2018 letter shows Netanyahu personally pressing Qatar’s leadership to keep sending Hamas major cash infusions. By some accounts, monthly payments hit around $35 million at peak, delivered in suitcases rather than formal banking channels.

Netanyahu didn’t hide the reasoning. Speaking to his own Likud party in March 2019, he said that whoever opposes a Palestinian state should support sending money into Gaza. His logic: keeping Hamas in control of Gaza and the Palestinian Authority separately in control of the West Bank meant Palestinians stayed politically divided, which meant a unified push for statehood stayed off the table. A former Mossad official overseeing counterterrorism financing until 2016 later said plainly that this was Israel’s policy to “buy quiet” while weakening Fatah and blocking negotiations.

This is the part your government would rather you forget when the conversation turns to October 7: the group blamed for the attack was, for over a decade, a group Israeli policy helped keep funded and in power.

The Justification That Never Ends

After October 7, the funding stopped and the war began. But something else started too: the permanent postponement.

Since the ceasefire took effect in October 2025, Netanyahu has repeatedly said Israel will not rebuild Gaza and will not fully withdraw until Hamas disarms. His own finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich, put it bluntly: the military “cannot withdraw even a millimetre” until Hamas is completely dismantled and demobilized. Israel currently maintains military control over roughly 70 percent of the Gaza Strip even under the ceasefire framework.

Here’s the problem with that bar. Analysts who track this closely are now saying out loud what Palestinians have said for two years. Mairav Zonszein of the International Crisis Group told Al Jazeera that Netanyahu has been “reliant upon Hamas throughout the war,” using it as an excuse not to negotiate or plan for what comes after. Even Netanyahu himself has acknowledged Gaza “no longer poses a military threat,” citing the deaths of Hamas’s top leadership and Israel’s control of most of the territory, yet in the same breath insists Hamas “rule” still has to be fully dismantled before anything changes.

The goalposts move by design. First it was the hostages. Then disarmament. Then “genuine” disarmament, a standard flexible enough that it may never be satisfied. As one policy analysis put it, if Israel gets to unilaterally decide what counts as an ongoing threat while keeping troops on the ground and continuing strikes during a so-called ceasefire, the line between ceasefire and continued war disappears entirely.

The Comment

On August 12, 2025, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sat down with i24 News. Mid-interview, host Sharon Gal handed him an amulet depicting what Gal called “a map of the Promised Land,” a visual of “Greater Israel.” Gal asked Netanyahu if he felt connected to that vision.

Netanyahu’s answer wasn’t a dodge. He said he felt “very” connected to it, describing himself as being on a “historic and spiritual mission.” The “Greater Israel” vision he endorsed on camera doesn’t stop at the West Bank and Gaza. It reaches into parts of Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon, territory that belongs to sovereign Arab states.

This wasn’t a fringe commentator or a backbench minister. This was the sitting prime minister of Israel, on Israeli television, agreeing on the record with a map that erases the borders of four neighboring countries.

The reaction came fast. Arab governments, including Iraq, condemned the remarks as a direct provocation to regional sovereignty. Palestinian politician Mustafa Barghouti said the comments amounted to a declared mission to violate international law and annex Arab territory. Hamas called it proof of the “danger this entity poses to all countries and peoples of the region.”

The Timeline

August 12, 2025: Netanyahu publicly embraces the Greater Israel vision on i24 News.

November 17, 2025: The UN Security Council adopts Resolution 2803, formally mandating the ISF. Buried in the resolution’s own text is the structure that should stop anyone from calling this an independent peacekeeping body: the ISF “will work with Israel and Egypt to help secure border areas,” and Israel gets a direct hand in preventing what crosses into Gaza.

July 26, 2026: Israel’s security cabinet formally approves ISF deployment, roughly eleven months after the Greater Israel remarks, with one hard condition attached: the force operates “in full coordination with” the Israeli military.
