As if the precious, ancient trees were inviting me to see their majesty and splendor - whispering of all the secret, glorious life sustained within.

Logically, I thought the rainforest was in imminent peril, from human ignorance and greed - as mass deforestation was already in progress, and being actively documented. Along with Climate Change warnings! 

So in 1994, after celebrating Brazil winning the World Cup and having saved up enough money from a weekend job, matched by money from my mum, off I went... 

A few months and five internal flights across Brazil... So many beautiful views, sights, sounds, people and vibrations! 

At 21 - I was in Love with Life and everything the joyous adventure of Our World had to offer.

Amongst the long list, Sao Paolo, Belo Horizonte, Salvador de Bahia - Parati - Recife, Natal - Iguaçu - Fortaleza, Manaus... new places, new adventures, new experiences.

Flying into Manaus, into the complete heat and humidity of the jungle - ALL your senses heighten and you become Truly ALIVE.

Staying on a floating Eco Lodge, I recall a boat ride to observe the marvel and powerful force of nature.

The cooler water of the Rio Branco, with silicates giving it a milky hue, and the warmer, organic matter heavy, darker water of the Rio Negro - distinctly running alongside each other, until finally merging and becoming the mighty Amazon River.

Trekking through the forest, learning about the flora and fauna, absorbing the spirit of my surroundings was sheer bliss. As if in a harmonious dream, I smiled constantly, slept like a baby and lived in a swimsuit.

Delighted to hear the dawn chorus of the howler monkeys, see the magical boto (river dolphin), go caiman sighting at night, eat mouth watering jungle fruits, try piranha for the first time - and of course swing from lianas, amongst the trees. 

Wowed by the power of nature being nature, entertained by impressive thunder storms and calmly absorbing the living, breathing, all encompassing forest.

Mother natures embrace and medicine for the Deep Soul. Feeling naturally - instinctively home, in a wild place I had never been before. Strangely, only with hindsight - considering or questioning how that was even possible!

A decade later, I visited my Love, Brazil again... for Carnival 2004, becoming lost and found in the chaos and mayhem! 

Some things had changed - vegetarians were now much better catered for lol... some things were worse, as the classic, loving ritual of caipirinha preparation had, in many places like my beloved rainforest - been brutally exploited.

The spectacular, spectacular of the Sambodromo - truly beyond your wildest imagination, an amazing, seemingly never-ending, fantasy parade of beauty, joy and dynamic, creative brilliance! 

A total vibration of rainbow eye candy, booms and samba drum rhythms for hours - until your cheeks hurt from smiling, your hands hurt from applauding - and your mind overflows in what seems a beautiful hallucination.

A unique, impressive and unforgettable musical, dance extravaganza! 

My Brazilian love affair continues, as soon I will return to celebrate with good friends, and once again be enchanted by the place, and it's people - always full of passion, life and vivacious energy!

They were responsible for holding the annual Asian Sports Festivals, leading to Anti-racist campaigns and setting-up the Peoples Defence Committee and People of Bedford Against Racism. My dad, along with his comrades, were already veterans of local and national level anti-racist struggles.

They gave the people of Luton critical support in their opposition to the racist National Front. In the 1980s, Balbir helped set-up Bedford Unemployed Workers Centre, Bedford Race Equality Council and Bedford Advice Forum whilst also voluntarily holding free, twice-weekly, general welfare/benefits advice sessions. Social-Justice activism and community work were part and parcel of the everyday struggle.

On a typical day, he would be sorting out problems of at least half a dozen people if not more. He was a tireless organiser with a wise demeanour and always tuned-in to the needs of others. He truly belonged to the people – serving the people, which he taught to others by example.

For a couple of decades, he was the Assistant General Secretary in the Indian Workers Association (GB). He led the fight against racism in the UK, supporting the struggle of the Dalit and Adivasi people in India and forging common ground with Indian women.

Most weekends were taken-up with protest, demonstrations and marches – in solidarity with the disenfranchised and impoverished working class. Whether for the Miners Strike, Anti-Apartheid Movement, Job Cuts, Welfare Rights and others under the notorious Thatcher government. At home, there were banners and a megaphone, kept on top of the unit in the front room.

By now, many had started referring to him affectionately as Bob. I guess as Balbir was difficult to pronounce. Bob worked full-time at the Citizens Advice Bureau in Walthamstow, London. Then some years later, at Luton Law Centre specialising in immigration. Which meant a lot of time spent at various detentions/immigration removal centres.

Growing up, I remember the house was always busy, and the phone was always ringing. People needing help and advice. To be clear, all this local and wider community work my father did was free. No doubt increasing the number of people reaching out for help.

He also played a major role in the establishment of the Bharati Dalit Mukti Alliance, a first in the UK. It united Indian people of all backgrounds against caste atrocities towards the Dalits in India. This came from his deep-seated political belief that went back to the struggle of the Indian people for their fundamental human rights.

Balbir Dutt passed away in 2010 leaving a legacy of steadfast compassion and dedication, to serve and support, poor and oppressed people. To his last days, he was never far away from fighting casteism; he was advising activists, and had a hand in the inclusion of caste in the Single Equalities Bill.

He was truly beloved, an inspiration and light to many. A Quiet Revolutionary.
