It's not a new line from Lavrov. He's been saying versions of it since the first year of the war. What's different is the backdrop it's being said against: a military that's bleeding faster than it can refill itself, an economy absorbing sustained strikes on the fuel infrastructure that keeps that military moving, and, this week, an explosion at an Italian ammunition plant near Rome that manufactures 155mm shells for European partners supplying Ukraine — cause still unconfirmed, no casualties, but a reminder of how tightly this war's supply chains now stretch across the continent whether anyone wants to admit it or not.

Then there's the odd detail that almost didn't make it into my notes: the Trump administration reportedly moved to put tariffs on drone imports in the same stretch of weeks it had agreed to start buying Ukrainian-made drones. He says he didn't know. The petition also claims the same separatist group met with State Department officials three times over nine months, and that he didn't know about that either.

Maybe he genuinely didn't. Ambassadors don't personally vet every app built by supporters back home. But that's almost beside the point. What's landed with this many Canadians isn't a single scandal — it's the accumulation. That's not a comment about weapons shipments. Countries lean on allies for weapons all the time. This is a claim about structural dependency — a nuclear-armed permanent member of the UN Security Council needing troops and missile stock from Pyongyang just to keep fighting. Zelensky said Russia is preparing to receive 30,000 additional North Korean soldiers, on top of ballistic missile launchers already flowing in.

Whether or not you take Kyiv's framing of "first time in Russian history" at face value, the underlying fact isn't contested: North Korean troops have been fighting and dying for Russia since late 2024, and Pyongyang's material support has only grown since. A country that spent decades positioning itself as a global power broker is now the junior partner in its own war supply chain.

There's a quieter data point underneath both stories that ties them together. The same week this was unfolding, Russia's Supreme Court removed Yabloko — the country's only registered, openly pro-peace party — from September's parliamentary elections. A nationalist party filed the case. It won.

You don't usually ban the peace party from the ballot when the war is going well.

Neither side in this conflict is signaling retreat. Ukraine is proving its reach can outrun Russian territory. Russia is proving it can still generate overwhelming force — just increasingly with someone else's soldiers and someone else's factories. Both of those things can be true, and the war can still have no clear end in sight, at the exact same time.

On August 1, Politico reported the Pentagon is walking away from something it built in 2022: leadership of the Security Assistance Group-Ukraine, the Wiesbaden-based command that has coordinated Western weapons deliveries, training, and logistics for the entire war. Command now shifts to another NATO member over the coming year. A Pentagon official called it what it always technically was — "a temporary structure." One Ukrainian official was blunter about what's at risk, warning that no ally can fully replace American satellite intelligence and targeting.

The timing isn't neutral. This is the same week Russia hit Kyiv with 24 ballistic missiles, 4 hypersonic Zircon/Oniks missiles, and 115 drones — and Ukraine intercepted none of them, citing an interceptor shortage. Washington's attention, and its Patriot stockpiles, are increasingly tied up elsewhere: the Iran war.

Europe's Money Isn't New. Where It's Coming From Now Is.

The EU's €90 billion loan isn't a fresh announcement — it was agreed back in December 2025, after EU leaders failed to reach consensus on funding it directly through frozen Russian assets. Belgium, which holds most of the roughly €210 billion in frozen Russian central bank reserves, wouldn't accept the liability alone. So the €90 billion ended up backed by EU borrowing instead, with the plan being that Russia eventually repays it through war reparations. Just over €8 billion of it has been disbursed so far, and the UK signed on to participate in July.

What's actually new is a separate, smaller stream: real proceeds from those frozen Russian assets. On August 3, the European Commission confirmed a fifth tranche — €1.4 billion — generated directly from immobilised Russian central bank funds, following a €3.47 billion defense-window tranche in late July. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was direct about the reasoning: "Russia must pay for the destruction it has caused."

Two Different Funding Lines, One Message

It's tempting to collapse these into one clean story — "Russia's money is now paying for Ukraine's air defense" — but that's only true of the smaller tranche mechanism, not the headline €90 billion figure. The bigger truth is less tidy and more important: Europe has built two separate, ongoing funding channels that don't require a congressional vote in Washington to keep moving.

That matters precisely because of what happened on August 1. The US isn't abandoning Ukraine, but it is stepping back from the operational center of gravity it held for four years, at a moment its own interceptor stocks are stretched thin by a different war. NATO's response wasn't to freeze — it was to reassign the job. The EU's response wasn't to wait — it was to keep the disbursements coming, loan and frozen-asset tranches both.

The spending was more than fifteen times what defeated Levin. The result was different.

What Changed Wasn't the Playbook. It Was the Ground Beneath It.

The establishment lined up hard behind Stevens. Governor Gretchen Whitmer endorsed her. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer effectively endorsed her too, telling Punchbowl News he believed she had "the best chance to win." Outgoing Senator Gary Peters backed her. This wasn't a fringe primary — it was the party's leadership actively working to stop El-Sayed.

He won anyway, powered by Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and the United Auto Workers — and by a base that, according to Michigan reporting, appeared to tune out or reject the advertising onslaught entirely despite being outspent roughly nine to one.

Why This Isn't Really About One Race

Strip away the personalities and what's left is a data point about timing. This primary happened five months into sustained US involvement in the Iran war, with the Gaza death toll long past 73,000 and saturating American news coverage in a way it never did in 2022. AIPAC increased its total spending in Democratic primaries this cycle to over $60 million, up from roughly $40 million two years earlier — nearly doubling down at the exact moment its preferred outcomes started failing.

If El-Sayed wins in November — and Michigan is genuinely competitive — he becomes the first Muslim senator in American history, elected in the same year the United States fought a war against a Muslim-majority nation, funded partly through the same super PAC machinery that just spent a record sum trying to stop him.

The lobby didn't lose because it spent too little. The Law That Wasn't Supposed to Still Work

In February, the Supreme Court struck down the legal mechanism Trump had been using to impose his sweeping "Liberation Day" tariffs. Markets rallied. Governments exhaled. What Jordan's Position Tells You

Jordan's situation deserves more attention than it's receiving.

King Abdullah has spent decades walking one of the most difficult diplomatic lines in the region — maintaining relations with Israel, with the US, with Gulf states, with Palestinian populations that make up a majority of his own country, and with Iran, which he has publicly described as a destabilizing force. That timing is not accidental. Zelensky walked into Washington on July 28 for Lindsey Graham's memorial service and a meeting with Trump. He published this intelligence claim three days earlier. The Defense Secretary's Answer vs The President's

The gap between what Hegseth told the Senate and what Trump told reporters deserves to be examined carefully.

During a Senate hearing on July 21, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth was asked if Russia or China was helping Iran.
