Daily reading: 2 Samuel 18

“To save such a sinner as I am! He shall never hear the last of it!” These words, spoken by a penitent sailor, capture the heart of true Christian worship—eternal, grateful praise. What some say in bitterness, he said in awe. This exclamation is deeply scriptural: I will praise Your name forever and ever (Psalm 145:2).

When grace truly grips the heart, praise becomes unending. The more we understand the depth of our sin, the more amazed we are by the depth of Christ’s mercy. Forgiveness isn’t just a past event—it’s a living reality that fuels continual thanksgiving. The sailor’s words echo the very song of heaven, where redeemed sinners sing, “Worthy is the Lamb!” with no end in sight. Let your life today be a chorus of that praise. He has saved you. Let Him never hear the last of it. He is worthy.

One hundred is a significant number—a century in cricket, Abraham’s age when Isaac was born, and the number of soldiers under a Roman centurion. Jesus met two centurions. One came to Him in Capernaum pleading for his paralyzed servant. Though a hardened soldier, he showed deep compassion and remarkable faith. Believing Jesus could heal with just a word, he amazed even Jesus who said, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. The second centurion likely seemed even harder—overseeing Jesus’ crucifixion. At first indifferent, he witnessed Jesus’ love, mercy and grace—even under unimaginable suffering. He saw Jesus care for others, forgive His killers and offer paradise to a dying thief. Watching Jesus die, the centurion’s heart changed. He declared, Surely he was the Son of God! Even the toughest are transformed when they truly encounter Jesus. Faith can be born in the most unlikely hearts. Praise God for such grace.

Does it matter what you’re called? In many cases, yes. Just ask someone whose name is often misspelt—Clare or Claire, Stephen or Steven, Graham or Graeme. In the Bible names carried deep meaning. Some were changed by God, others were given before birth. Achan means trouble—and he caused it. David means beloved—and he was beloved by God. Hannah means favour—and she received God’s favour with a child. Abram became Abraham—father of many—because God promised to make his descendants as countless as the stars. Sarai became Sarah—noblewoman—and at 90, she gave birth to Isaac, showing that nothing is impossible with God. Two names were divinely chosen before birth: John the Baptist and Jesus. John means “God is gracious,” fitting for the one who prepared the way for the Messiah. Jesus, or Yeshua, means “God saves.” He came to save us from our sins. He is the Saviour. The question is—is He your Saviour?

“Things can only get better,” sang D:Ream and for a time it became the unofficial anthem of a UK political party—a hopeful sentiment, but whether the promised change ever happened is open to debate. Yet the Bible shows that God’s people often faced despair, only to witness God’s power turn things around. In Egypt the Israelites were ruthlessly oppressed, their lives made bitter under Pharaoh. Yet God raised up Moses to lead them to freedom. Later in Babylonian exile, the Jews wept by foreign rivers, grieving their ruined temple and homeland. But in time God moved King Cyrus to allow them to return home. The pattern is clear: even in the darkest times, God is not absent. He sees, He cares and He acts. For Christians today Jesus has promised, I will come back and take you to be with me (John 14:3). For those who trust in Him, the future is not uncertain gloom—it’s certainly glorious! Things truly will get better. Eternally better.

How good is your memory? You might not remember what you had for lunch last Saturday or family stories others can recall vividly. Yet you’ll probably remember the things you wish you could forget—embarrassing, painful, shameful moments that linger far too long. Some people, weighed down by such memories, long for forgiveness but believe their sins are too great for God to pardon. They’re wrong. God’s memory is perfect—He sees and knows all. But the Bible says something astonishing: I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more. Though He cannot forget, He chooses not to remember the sins of those who come to Him in faith. Why? Because Jesus bore our punishment on the cross. God doesn’t punish the same sin twice. When we turn to Christ, God says, in effect, “What sins?” They are blotted out, gone. Nothing you’ve done is beyond His forgiveness. How amazing is His mercy.

Today’s culture celebrates fame—social media is packed with ‘celebrities’ and ‘wannabees,’ all seeking adoration. The desire to be admired, even worshipped, is nothing new. The Stone Roses sang, “I Wanna Be Adored,” echoing an ancient pride that began before time, when Satan, once a glorious guardian angel, sought to exalt himself above God (Ezekiel 28:12–17). His pride led to his downfall—and he now works to spread that same self-exalting spirit. In contrast stands Jesus, God the Son, who had every right to be adored, yet humbled Himself: Though he was in the form of God, [He] made himself nothing ... becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross (Philippians 2:6–8). He came not to be served, but to serve and to save. Don’t seek worldly fame. Follow the one who became a worm and not a man (Psalm 22:6) so that we might live. Live for Jesus, not a celebrity.

The folk singer Roger Whittaker was known for his remarkable whistling, but did you realise the Bible says God whistles too? In our text God is summoning nations like Assyria to carry out His purposes (see also Isaiah 7:18-20). This isn’t a gentle tune—it’s the commanding whistle of a sovereign God who directs history. Empires rise and fall, yet behind it all is God, ruling over kings and armies. When Judah turned from God, He used Assyria to humble them—not out of cruelty, but to turn their hearts back. God still acts today, sometimes through hard circumstances, to get our attention. He wants us to face our sin and turn to Him. The clearest picture of this is Calvary, where Jesus bore our sin. There we see both God’s judgment and His mercy. If you wonder whether God is involved in the world—listen closely. He is whistling still.

Most people dislike rubbish and dirt—whether it’s trash piling up on the street or the feeling of being unwashed. But without God, sin has left us spiritually filthy. Our hands are stained by injustice and our minds tainted by impure thoughts. We long to be clean but can’t wash away sin ourselves. God says, All our righteous acts are like filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6). Even our best efforts fall short. But God loves us and has made a way to cleanse us. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us (2 Corinthians 5:21). Scarlet and crimson are meant to be immovable dyes that won’t ever wash out. They’re a good metaphor for the sin that clings to us and makes us dirty, but God washes away all our sin and makes us perfectly clean when we trust in Jesus and acknowledge that He died for us.

In a world obsessed with appearances, many hide behind masks, pretending to be someone they’re not – like the Pharisees in our text. Social media overflows with curated lives—happy, perfect, admired. But beneath the surface, countless people carry pain, guilt and shame, trying to escape realities they’d rather forget. We long for cleansing, but nothing we do can remove the stain of sin. Jesus offers a different way. He never had to pretend. He was sinless yet chose to take our sin upon Himself. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us (2 Corinthians 5:21). On the cross He bore our guilt, crying out, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? (Mark 15:34). He was forsaken so we could be accepted. Through faith in Him, we’re cleansed and free—no longer condemned (Romans 8:1). In Jesus, we find real peace and a love that sees us fully and embraces us completely. You don’t need to pretend anymore!

Daily reading: 2 Samuel 9

Pet dogs may turn up their noses at healthy kibble, preferring tastier treats—yet what they reject is exactly what nourishes them. Israel once did the same. In the wilderness, God provided manna—bread from heaven—yet they grumbled saying, We detest this miserable food! (Numbers 21:5). They forgot it was a daily gift from God, given freely until they reached the Promised Land. Their rejection points to a deeper truth. The manna was a symbol of Christ. Jesus said, I am the bread of life … the true bread from heaven that gives life to the world (John 6:33). Like Israel, we can grow bored with spiritual things and look elsewhere for satisfaction. But only Jesus can meet every need—physical, emotional and spiritual. Where do you turn for sustenance? Open a Bible, read the Gospels and taste and see that the LORD is good (Psalm 34:8). He alone satisfies.

The famous quote “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely” was written in a letter by Lord Acton, a 19th-century English historian and moralist. He also said: “Great men are almost always bad men.” Take Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, who built a golden image and demanded worship—until God humbled him. After losing his sanity, he acknowledged God’s sovereignty: those who walk in pride he is able to humble (Daniel 4:37). Manasseh, king of Judah, committed terrible evil, even sacrificing his sons. But in exile and distress, he repented—and God restored him. Power changed these men for the worse, until God changed them. Don’t we long today for a ruler who governs in truth? That ruler is Jesus. He will return and reign in righteousness: nation shall not lift up sword against nation (Isaiah 2:4). Until then, we are invited to follow Him now, the all-powerful but incorruptible One.

Things happen in life, like COVID-19, that we can’t get our heads around —no one knows what’s happening or how it happened. But nothing is surprising or confusing to God. He is omniscient—all-knowing. From His eternal vantage point, God sees everything: past, present and future. That’s why biblical prophecy is so accurate—He plans history with purpose. Centuries before Jesus was born, God said a virgin would give birth (Isaiah 7:14), and that He’d be born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2), live in Egypt (Hosea 11:1), and suffer greatly (Isaiah 53). All of it came true. Why? Because God not only knew but ordained it—so that His Son would bear our punishment. Jesus knew what awaited Him and still chose the cross—for us. That’s love. The God who never says, “I didn’t see that coming” planned salvation from the beginning. You can trust Him with your past, present and future. Nothing is hidden from Him. Nothing is beyond His reach.

Many people chase bucket lists—skydiving, world travel, thrills—trying to squeeze the most out of life before it ends. Why? Often it’s from dissatisfaction or fear that death is the end of everything. But for Christians, this mindset is tragic. The Bible says, He has also set eternity in the human heart (Ecclesiastes 3:11). God has wired us to long for more, not to fear the end. Eternity is real—and glorious—for those who know Jesus. Scripture promises: God will dwell with them … He will wipe every tear from their eyes … There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain (Revelation 21:3–4). Far from being the end, death is the entry to ‘forever joy’ with God. Jesus died to secure this eternity for us. You don’t need to rush to live it all now. If you belong to Christ, the best is yet to come—and it lasts forever.

Daily reading: 2 Samuel 5

Three young men—Hananiah, Azariah and Mishael—were pressured to conform in a foreign land. Ordered to bow to a golden image or face death in a fiery furnace, they stood firm. Their courage came from deep trust in God’s sovereignty—whether He rescued them or not. Faith like that doesn’t demand certain outcomes; it rests in God’s sovereign will. Christians believe death isn’t their doom but a doorway. As Paul wrote: Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? (1 Corinthians 15:55). For believers, death is being ‘called home’—to a place of eternal peace with Jesus, where there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain (Revelation 21:4). Trust God fully—He is able, and His purposes are good, now and forever.

Daily reading: 2 Samuel 4

God’s anger is not like human anger—impulsive or unjust—but is His righteous response to sin. Scripture tells us, God is a righteous judge, and a God who feels indignation every day (Psalm 7:11). His wrath is stirred by rebellion, injustice and the suppression of truth (Romans 1:18). Yet God is also merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love (Psalm 103:8). He does not delight in judgment but offers grace through His Son. At the cross, Jesus bore the full weight of God’s wrath—not because He deserved it, but because we did. The LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all (Isaiah 53:6). God’s anger toward sin was satisfied in Christ, so that all who believe might be spared. It is a sobering truth—but also a comforting one.

Daily reading: 2 Samuel 3

We all have pet hates—small annoyances that get under our skin. An example might be people who leave shopping trolleys unattended while they wander off to shop, or inaccurate use of the word ‘literally!’ But God’s ‘hate’ is far more serious. Scripture tells us God hates sin because of the destruction it brings. Sin isn’t just wrongdoing—it’s rebellion. Like Japanese Knotweed, it spreads, disrupts and destroys. From Eden to today, sin has affected every human and the whole of creation. Natural disasters, disease and death all trace back to sin’s root. We can’t live sinlessly or avoid its penalty. But there is One who could and did. Jesus, the sinless Son of God, took our punishment on Himself. The God we rebelled against is the same God who bore the consequence for us. Trust in Him. From spiritual death comes new life—life forever with the God who saves.

Daily reading: 2 Samuel 2

His father’s belt was normally used to hold up his work trousers, but one day it became a symbol of discipline when a son, his brother and a friend turned a bed into a trampoline. Though it was never used, the threat was enough to scare them. It was the only time that the son saw his father angry. Similarly, Jesus only faced His Father’s wrath once—though He didn’t deserve it. At His baptism and at the Transfiguration, God declared, This is my Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased. Yet, on the cross, Jesus cried, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why would a loving Father pour out wrath on His perfect Son? Because Jesus willingly took our place. Isaiah 53:5 says, He was pierced for our transgressions … and by His wounds we are healed. Jesus bore God’s anger so we could receive His peace. The Son whom God loves died for you. Will you respond in faith?

Daily reading: 2 Samuel 1

Jesus’ first miracle at Cana was more than an act of kindness—it was a sign revealing His divine identity. John writes, This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee ... and His disciples believed in Him (John 2:11). This doesn’t imply the disciples had no faith before—many had followed John the Baptist, who pointed to the coming Messiah—but their faith was still developing. Like them, our faith must grow over time. Even Jesus’ closest followers were sometimes rebuked for their “little faith,” reminding us that faith can rise and fall. Paul commended the Roman believers for their strong faith (Romans 1:8), and Abraham’s faith grew as he trusted God’s promises. At Cana, Jesus also manifested His glory, demonstrating divine power as Creator by instantly producing wine—something only God could do. This miracle confirmed His identity and invited deeper faith in all who witnessed it.

Daily reading: John 21

Who doesn’t love weddings? The wedding at Cana is a beautiful reminder that Jesus approved of and even blessed such occasions. Likely a family event, Mary had some responsibility there. Though Jesus hadn’t yet performed a miracle, Mary’s faith—shaped by 30 years of living with Him—led her to tell Him about the wine shortage, a serious issue in Jewish culture. Jesus’ reply, Woman, what does this have to do with me? may sound harsh, but it wasn’t disrespectful: He used the same word tenderly from the cross. His comment, My hour has not yet come, pointed to divine timing. Yet He acted. Mary trusted Him completely, telling the servants, Do whatever He tells you. Jesus then turned water into wine—over 100 gallons—demonstrating His abundant provision. This miracle, like others, shows us the fullness of God: full nets, full baskets, full mercy. Overflowing and rich, His blessings are never scarce!

Daily reading: John 20

Jesus was well known in Nazareth, having lived there nearly 30 years as a kind, honest carpenter and a regular worshipper at the synagogue. One Sabbath He read from Isaiah, declaring, The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me … and then said, Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing (Luke 4:16–21). By applying this prophecy to Himself, He exposed their unbelief. Though they knew Him well, the people were outraged and tried to kill Him by driving Him out to the edge of a cliff (Luke 4:28–30). Jesus, however, responded not with anger but with calm acceptance. He saw rejection as part of His Father’s plan and continued to treat others with love and compassion. Unlike the disciples who later wanted to call down fire on a rejecting village, Jesus showed restraint. His example teaches us to handle rejection with grace, trusting that some trials are part of God’s greater purpose.
