People will say that at the end of the day it’s only a game and this is part and parcel of being a football player. Then why do we feel sad when some players depart from the football club we support? After a very long time, Gabriel Martinelli leaving Arsenal Football Club is feeling like a personal loss and making me very emotional. The last time I felt this said about an Arsenal player leaving was when Aaron Ramsey left the club in July 2019.

I have been conscious of becoming emotionally attached to managers and players ever since Arsène left, because I realize that everyone is just a different story in this huge book that is The Arsenal. Everyone joins and writes their own story, and every story has a beginning and an end, but it is the level of impact that story has on you as a supporter that causes us to become more attached to some players more than others. So, what was so different about a skinny teenager who had come from Brazil’s fourth division Ituano to Arsenal Football Club that I really wanted to write this heartfelt tribute?

When Martinelli joined Arsenal, we as a football club were not in a good place. We were labelled as a “banter” club and ridiculed both on and off the pitch. There wasn’t anything to be excited about week in week out, but then in the 2019 Carabao Cup game Nottingham Forest, this skinny teenager scored two sensational goals and announced himself in some ways. At the time, I didn’t realize it, but Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka were the bright sparks in what was if you recollect a bleak phase in the history of Arsenal Football Club.

Then Arsenal decided to take a punt on Mikel Arteta and, with his arrival, marked Martinelli’s upward trajectory as one of Arsenal’s leading attackers. If we really think about it, Martinelli, Smith Rowe and Saka were not just promising young players rising through the ranks, they became a symbol of hope during what was as Arteta would say the most difficult phase of his managerial career at Arsenal. They provided both Arteta and us fans with something to believe in, and I feel that they were a major factor in Arteta being able to save and continue his managerial career at Arsenal.

I remember Arteta used to call Martinelli “Baby Suarez” and Jürgen Klopp called him the “talent of the century.” That makes me feel like Martinelli maybe didn’t live up to his potential, but in some ways, he lived up to that promise as he progressed from playing football in Brazil’s fourth division to becoming a Premier League Champion. But for me, it’s not just about what he achieved on the football pitch but also what kind of human being he is off it. Of course, this is not my personal assessment of Gabriel Martinelli, but from the way everyone around him talks about him, the things he says in interviews and the way he has conducted himself during his time at Arsenal, makes him sound like one of the nicest guys you could probably meet.

Then there are his actions, which speak much more than words ever could. The best example I can think is amidst the high of celebrating our Premier League title win, Martinelli, after giving an interview with Ian Wright, who was working with Sky, wanted to take a photograph with the legend himself and decided to put his Premier League medal around Ian Wright’s neck. It may seem like a very small gesture, but it tells me a lot about the kind of human Martinelli is. Moreover, here’s his statement after winning the Premier League, which in itself felt like a goodbye.

I don’t think I need to explain anything further because he is a genuinely good human being.

In my opinion, Steve Round (ex-Arsenal assistant coach) has best summed up Gabriel Martinelli in Arsenal’s All or Nothing Amazon documentary back in 2022: “He is a great kid, trains everyday like it’s his last day on earth. He’s a diamond, he really is.” That is exactly how Gabriel Martinelli will be remembered by the vast majority of Arsenal fans. He is a player who joined us during a difficult period and grew along with the club to help us get to where we belong and finally won the Premier League title defending the Arsenal badge.

It’s going to be difficult to digest that Gabriel Martinelli’s story at Arsenal comes to an end, but his time at the club will always be remembered fondly. I do hope that we find a way to give him a proper sendoff (something similar to what Club Brugge planned for Tzolis) because he deserves it. Thank you and farewell, Little Gabi — you will always be Arsenal’s diamond.

It’s been a weirdly short summer from a footballing standpoint, but it feels good to see the Premier League champions back in action. At first glance, the lineup hardly looked like a pre-season XI. Then you remember Arsenal are still without 12 senior players who remain on their post-season break. That, more than anything, is a reflection of how deep this squad has become. We look ready to compete again.

It’s going to be a big season for Max Dowman. It almost feels ridiculous saying that because he’s only 16 years old. He got a taste of first-team football last season, but I’m expecting him to play a much bigger role this year because, if you’re good enough, you’re old enough. Of course, he needs to be managed carefully, and there’s nobody better placed to do that than Mikel Arteta. Once again, though, Dowman was at the heart of everything good Arsenal did. He produced a brilliant through ball for Kai Havertz to open the scoring before getting his own reward in the second half, driving a shot from outside the box into the bottom corner. Watching his development is going to be one of the most exciting storylines of the season.

Kai Havertz, who opened the scoring with a composed finish, looked fit, sharp and fresh. It’s vital that he has a strong pre-season after the injury setbacks, he’s had over the last 18 months. He remains one of Arsenal’s most misunderstood players, but a fully fit Havertz gives this attack a completely different dimension. Winning Player of the Match is hopefully the perfect way to kick-start what could be a very good season for him.

The Myles Lewis-Skelly midfield redemption arc continues. With Declan Rice and Martín Zubimendi still on holiday, Lewis-Skelly started at the base of midfield and dictated play with some lovely line-breaking passes. It was a real feel-good performance. He’s going to be much more involved in midfield this season, and while this feels like the year for him to cement that role, it’s also worth remembering he’s still only 19. There’s no need to rush his development.

It wouldn’t be pre-season without trying to identify the next academy player capable of breaking into the first-team squad. After Dowman, Marli Salmon is probably next in line. At 16, he’s still incredibly young for a defender, but he already looks composed and comfortable. He has all the attributes to be leading Arsenal’s back line sooner rather than later. Then there was Ife Abraham, who also caught my eye when he came on in midfield. He looked assured in possession, shielded the ball well and played with a maturity beyond his years. There were moments where he reminded me of a young Thomas Partey.

Another reason pre-season is so enjoyable is getting our first proper look at the new signings, and Christos Tzolis certainly made a strong first impression. It’s far too early to draw comparisons, but there’s something about the way he carries himself that reminded me of Alexis Sánchez. The way he cut inside before unleashing his shot certainly brought back memories. It was brilliant to see him mark his debut with a goal. Illan Meslier also came on in the second half and made a couple of really good saves. Considering he’s currently viewed as the third-choice goalkeeper, I think he’s too good for that role. Even if Kepa were to leave in the future, Arsenal would still be in a very healthy position between the posts.

Finally, we got to see Gabriel Jesus, Reiss Nelson and Fabio Vieira. Jesus got himself on the scoresheet, but for all three players, this feels like a crossroads. Vieira has never quite managed to establish himself, Reiss continues to shine in pre-season without carrying that form into the campaign, and with Jesus, it feels like we’ve watched this film too many times to convince ourselves that this time will be different. Sometimes, for both player and club, it’s simply time to move on.

To wrap things up, it was good to have Arteta’s press conferences back. He spoke well about Ethan Nwaneri’s development and what the team needs to improve ahead of the new season. But I couldn’t help noticing that little grin when he was asked whether Arsenal were signing Vinicius Junior. Maybe it means nothing, maybe it means everything.

They say the top of one mountain is the bottom of the next. It is a simple thought, but the longer I experience life, the more I realize how true it is. We human beings are forever chasing destinations and often believe that happiness exists somewhere in the future. We convince ourselves that once we arrive at a certain place, once we achieve a certain goal, once we reach a certain summit, everything will finally make sense. But life has a funny way of teaching us otherwise. Every summit eventually reveals another horizon, and every destination becomes a new beginning. The moment you reach the top of one mountain, you realize you are standing at the foot of another. Perhaps that is the very reason for me why football resonates so deeply with life. It mirrors the same endless pursuit as there is no final destination in football. There is only the next game, the next season, the next challenge, and the next dream.

When Kai Havertz struck the ball into the roof of the net in the sixth minute of the Champions League Final, it genuinely felt like Arsenal were beginning to scale the next mountain. The game definitely wasn’t won as PSG were not going to simply roll over, but that moment represented the years of rebuilding, patience and setbacks. For years, we had heard that Arsenal weren’t ready, and that Mikel Arteta wasn’t good enough and his project had a ceiling. Yet there we were, six minutes into the biggest game in club football, leading against probably the best team in the world and looking every bit like we belonged on that stage. For a brief moment, I could almost see the summit in the distance.

Football, like life itself, rarely follows the beautiful script we create in our heads. From the moment we took the lead, it became an excruciating affair. For one reason or another, we never truly managed to impose ourselves on the ball in the way we would have liked. The game became less about expressing ourselves and more about enduring. It became a test of organization and resilience. Arsenal had to suffer and suffer they did. Yet there is something profoundly beautiful about suffering in pursuit of something meaningful. Modern football often celebrates brilliance and beauty above all else, but every great achievement requires an ability to withstand discomfort. Every great team has moments where they cannot control the game and must instead control themselves. Arsenal spent much of that first half doing exactly that.

But momentum, for me, is one of football’s greatest truths. No matter how well things are going, it eventually shifts. No team controls every moment forever and PSG found their opening and capitalized on a solitary lapse in concentration down our right-hand side. The penalty was awarded and converted, and suddenly the landscape of the game changed. The mountain became steeper and the summit that had looked visible moments earlier disappeared back into the clouds. What followed was a cagey and tense affair, where every touch felt significant, and every mistake felt catastrophic. It was all square after 90 minutes, and we went into extra time feeling that Arsenal could perhaps have shown a little more bravery. There were moments where we should have taken greater control, trusted ourselves more in possession, and pushed a little harder to seize the occasion. But it’s easy for me to sit in my comfort zone and say this. It is easy to demand courage when your own legs aren’t carrying the physical and emotional weight of an entire season.

As the game drifted towards penalties, it felt like that was a fair outcome. Penalties have always fascinated me because they expose one of life’s most uncomfortable truths. We like to believe that effort and outcome move together. We like to believe that if we sacrifice and suffer enough, we will eventually receive what we deserve. But life doesn’t always work that way. Sometimes you do everything right and still lose. Sometimes the margins simply don’t fall in your favor. A penalty shootout is football’s purest expression of that reality. They didn’t win the Champions League, but they proved that they belong at the very elite level. For years Arsenal were spectators at Europe’s highest table. We watched others compete for the biggest prizes whilst wondering when our turn would come again. That feeling is completely gone, and this team arrives at the elite stage expecting to compete. There is an enormous difference between those two mindsets, and it is perhaps the greatest achievement of Arteta’s reign.

That was why the parade the following day felt so significant. The default assumption suggests that supporters celebrate trophies. Yet what unfolded at the parade felt like something deeper than that. It felt like a celebration of connection, belief and shared purpose. The smiles, the songs and the emotions weren’t born because Arsenal won silverware. They were born from recognizing how far this club has come along. Fans see a team they can identify with and that reflects the values we admire. Sometimes football’s greatest gift is not the trophies it delivers but the sense of belonging it creates, and Arsenal have given that feeling back to their fans.

Perhaps that is why this defeat feels so different from 2006. When Arsenal lost the Champions League Final in Paris, it felt like the end of something beautiful. It felt like the closing chapter of a great team and the beginning of a difficult transition. There was sadness because everybody sensed that a door was closing. This doesn’t feel like the end of an era, it feels like the dawn of one. The pain of the defeat shall remain, and the disappointment will linger for some time, but underneath it all exists something far more important: belief.

The top of one mountain is indeed the bottom of the next. And Arsenal may have fallen short of the summit this time, but what matters most is that they have reached a place where the next climb is visible. The dream remains alive and the journey continues. The lessons have been learned and for the first time in a very long time, it feels like everybody connected to this football club can see the same horizon stretching out in front of them. Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal are here to stay and build something special.

Trying to put these last ten days into words is probably the hardest article I have had to write since I decided to write consistently about The Arsenal. There is almost too much to say, but some moments in life feel bigger than words themselves. You live them first and only later try to understand them. This past week was one of those moments. For years, we spoke about dreams, possibilities and what Arsenal could become under Mikel Arteta. We spoke about title races, near misses and what ifs. We spoke about the promised land as if it were some distant place on the horizon that we could see but never quite reach. Then suddenly, after all these years, we finally arrived.

Our final home game of the season kickstarted a week that no Arsenal fan will ever forget. A 1-0 win, a set-piece goal and a VAR call in Arsenal’s favor. It must have been a painful hate watch for rival fans. The result meant all eyes immediately turned towards Manchester City and their trip to Bournemouth. Every Arsenal fan probably tuned in because there was a chance that something beautiful could happen. Football has a fun way of turning grown adults into believers. Rational thought leaves the room and suddenly ninety minutes of football somewhere else in the country becomes the most important thing in the world. Kroupi Jr. broke the deadlock and what followed should probably go down as a generational hate watch, as the kids call it. City still kept pushing and Haaland gave a scare in injury time which itself felt like twenty-two years, but then the full-time whistle blew.

I celebrated with my little boy and just hugged him as tears rolled down my face. He turns three in August and doesn’t even fully understand what Arsenal means to me yet. At that moment, he reached up and wiped away my tears. Just instinctively like it was the most natural thing in the world. Football gives us these moments and life gives them meaning. Years from now I will probably forget parts of that Bournemouth game. I will forget certain details of the title race. I will forget specific scorelines and league tables, but I will never forget my son wiping tears from my face as Arsenal became Champions of England.

What followed on Tuesday night was proof that football is about far more than trophies. Nearly one hundred thousand people gathered outside the Emirates. Arsenal fans traveled from every corner of London and beyond because they wanted to experience the moment together. It was indeed a party on the streets of North London. Then came the videos of Saka, Rice, Timber and Eze turning up in the early hours walking around the Emirates and sharing some moments to celebrate with the fans. That is what football is supposed to be, with just people sharing a moment that none of them will ever forget.

Somewhere during all of this, something happened that means more to me than I can properly explain. My wife fell in love with The Arsenal. She hugged me and simply said, “We won.” Not Arsenal but we! Football fans spend years trying to explain why this matters so much and most of the time we fail miserably. It sounds irrational because it is irrational. Yet every once in a while, someone understands without needing an explanation. My wife saying “we won” was one of those moments. So to all the partners of Arsenal fans, thank you. You’ve lived through the chaos, the hope, the collapses, the belief, and somehow, you’re still here. You’ve listened to conversations you never asked for. You’ve learned player names you never intended to remember. You’ve sat through mood swings determined by events completely outside your control. This Premier League Title win belongs to you as well.

The next few days became a blur with all the celebration photos, videos and fan reactions. I honestly felt like injecting every single Arsenal celebration photo and video directly into my veins. I wanted every moment and every memory. The funny thing about happiness is that when it finally arrives after a long wait, you become terrified of missing even a second of it. Even the smallest moments suddenly feel precious. Somewhere in the middle of all that, this story became my first tattoo to mark Arsenal’s 14th Premier League title. Which is why the coronation at Selhurst Park felt so fitting. The place where Arsenal’s first title challenge under Arteta truly began became the place where his team finally lifted the trophy. Everything about the celebration felt perfect. Josh and Stan Kroenke brought out the trophy. Emmanuel Nmecha, a participant in Arsenal's community football program for people with learning difficulties (“North London United”), which is run by Arsenal in the Community, handed the medals to every player. The fans sang every player’s chant as they walked out one by one. Arteta came out first and was just smiling like a proud dad as every player stepped forward. Then Martin Ødegaard looked at the trophy with that smile before producing an audacious trophy lift that felt uniquely Arsenal.

The scenes were immaculate, and the celebrations were beautiful. For me though, one moment stood above all others. Martin Ødegaard bringing Arteta forward and making sure he lifted the trophy. Mikel Arteta actually made it happen and nobody deserves this title more than him. When he first arrived, having belief was difficult because years of disappointment had conditioned us to lower expectations. Hope became something to manage rather than embrace. Yet Arteta never seemed interested in our limitations. He spoke openly about competing with the very best when most of us were still trying to convince ourselves that we belonged in the conversation. He saw a version of Arsenal long before the rest of us could. Looking back now, that might be the most impressive thing about him. Leadership is often described as getting people to follow you. I think true leadership is figuring out tomorrow when everyone else is trapped in today.

Now that everything has finally sunk in, I keep coming back to the title of this piece —The Promised Land. I feel that arriving at the destination teaches you that the destination was never the whole point. The journey changed us long before we got there. And now that we have finally reached the top of one mountain, it’s actually the bottom of the next, which is the Champions League final against PSG. The promised land, it turns out, is not where the story ends. It’s where the next chapter begins.

What a last two weeks it has been as an Arsenal fan. And maybe that sentence alone does not even do justice to what this has actually felt like. Because supporting Arsenal in moments like this is not simply watching football matches. It is an emotional investment at the highest possible level. It is memory fighting against possibility. It is constantly trying to convince yourself that this time might finally be different while your footballing scars whisper otherwise.

In my last article, I mentioned that we had nullified the momentum after that brilliant win against Fulham. That felt important because momentum at this stage of a title race is psychological territory. It is about who is carrying belief and who is carrying pressure. And for the first time in a long while, it genuinely felt like Manchester City were the ones being forced to respond to Arsenal. So, all we could really do was sit back and wait.

I watched that game for 55 minutes and felt this was a job well done for Manchester City. I tune back in half an hour later and find out it’s City who are a goal down. I was shocked and surprised at the same time. Then Doku scored late to equalize, which obviously gave a sense of frustration because for a brief moment it looked like the footballing gods were preparing something even sweeter for Arsenal fans. But a draw still meant the title race swung back into Arsenal’s hands.

The strange thing about being in the title race at this stage of the season is that you stop celebrating moments fully. Every emotion immediately gets redirected into permutations and “what next?” Because we as fans often talk about pressure as if it only exists for players. But supporters carry it too, albeit differently. We take league tables personally and replay moments in our heads that players themselves probably forget about five minutes later.

Then came the Champions League semi-final second leg. Honestly, I do not think I have ever seen the Emirates atmosphere feel like that before. Even before kickoff, there was this feeling in the air that something important was about to happen. The scenes around the stadium when the team bus arrived felt bigger than football. Thousands of people gathered not because they were told to, not because it was choreographed, but because they desperately wanted to push this team over the line themselves. Fans always want to feel useful during moments like this. And for the first time in a while, Arsenal supporters genuinely felt connected to the team emotionally, spiritually and culturally in a way that went beyond results.

The atmosphere did not feel manufactured. It felt organic and with that atmosphere came Bukayo Saka’s goal at the stroke of halftime to put us ahead in the tie. And honestly, who else could it have been? There is something poetic about Saka delivering in moments like this because he represents everything Arsenal fans want this club to become again — Joyful. The second half became a test of nerve, suffering and emotional endurance. Big saves and last-ditch defending. Long enough for people to grow up hearing stories about European nights they were too young to remember. That is why nights like this matter so much, because football memories become emotional landmarks in people’s lives. You remember where you were, who you were with, what you felt, what you screamed and what you believed. And Arsenal gave the fans one of those nights.

This Arsenal side has reached a point where emotional celebrations barely last 48 hours before reality drags you back in because the title race was waiting, and West Ham away suddenly felt enormous. Probably the trickiest fixture remaining. A relegation-fighting side at home. The exact type of game Arsenal teams of the past have stumbled. The exact type of afternoon designed to awaken old fears. And maybe that is the exhausting thing about supporting Arsenal during a title race against Manchester City. Perfection does not feel like ambition anymore, it feels like a requirement.

We actually started the game well enough, but Ben White’s injury disrupted the structure badly. Some of the issues that followed were self-inflicted because of the changes Arteta made. Slowly, you could feel control slipping away, and Arsenal fans know that feeling intimately. You can almost sense panic before it fully arrives. Then Martin Ødegaard came on and from his very first touch, it genuinely felt like he was operating on a different frequency to everyone else on the pitch. Ødegaard influenced the emotional rhythm of the game and the game suddenly began moving to his tempo rather than West Ham’s chaos.

But before any of that mattered, David Raya produced what might genuinely become one of the defining saves of the season or maybe even the era, because title races are won through moments of brilliance. And football history is often decided by tiny margins that people forget until years later — fingertip save, deflection, delayed run, whistle. Seconds after, Raya’s spectacular save came Arsenal’s goal, completely orchestrated by Ødegaard before Trossard applied the finish.

Then came injury time and with it came every Arsenal trauma imaginable. West Ham scored from a corner in the dying moments, and honestly, it felt like watching a horror film whose ending you already know. Arsenal fans have seen versions of that goal too many times over the years. The emotional collapse and the late concession. The feeling of everything slipping away at the exact moment you begin to believe.

What followed during the VAR check was probably one of the most psychologically exhausting three-minute periods I have experienced watching football. My brain went everywhere at once.

Now there are only two league games remaining and Arsenal are within touching distance. That phrase sounds simple, but every Arsenal fan understands the emotional weight attached to it because this club has spent years existing between promise and collapse.

This Arsenal side feels different and looks like a team learning how to live with expectation rather than fear it. Perhaps that is why this run feels so emotionally overwhelming, because for the first time in a very long time, Arsenal fans are not simply dreaming. We believe that 22 years of wait is going to finally come to an end.

I have serious issues with the way football discourse works these days. We no longer analyze teams; we just reduce them into a single lazy adjective. In Arsenal’s case, that word has been “boring.” I get that it’s convenient and loud, but it’s completely devoid of context. People claiming that this team has lost its soul are forgetting that it has and, more importantly, the manager has lived through something. Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal isn’t an ideological project frozen in time. This win felt like that. If Arsenal are to lift multiple trophies this season, nights like this— imperfect and frustrating but psychologically freeing — will matter far more than we realize right now. Before we win big, we must first break the curse that tells us we never will.

There are moments in a title race that simply sit there, quietly, asking more questions. The 0-0 against Liverpool at the Emirates was one of those moments. I can live with the result because a 0-0 against Liverpool is not catastrophic. Football is not arithmetic; points don’t always tell the emotional truth of a performance.

But what I can’t reconcile is our second half performance, especially when the first half made it clear that Liverpool were there for the taking. That second half performance felt uncomfortably familiar. Wolves came rushing back into my mind because of the behaviour. Out of possession, we were passive, safe and almost apologetic. Every single player looked like they wanted the game to pass through them rather than be shaped by them.

The Wolves game was meant to be a wake up call. This felt like the alarm going off again, louder this time, and us still hesitating to get out of bed. That’s the part that lingers — not the missed chances, but the withdrawal. The sense that, instead of leaning into the opportunity, we retreated from it, as if the weight of what was at stake became heavier the closer we got to it.

Liverpool versus Arsenal used to be end to end, high scoring, frantic games where control was abandoned and emotion took over. This season, however, these fixtures have felt like chess played in slow motion. We were almost afraid of the consequence, and maybe that tells us more than we want to admit. Because when you’re trying to win a league title after 22 years of waiting, control can become a crutch. Safety can start to feel like progress, and moments that demand bravery can instead expose doubt.

This is where mentality is questioned by the game itself. Every time an opportunity isn’t seized, questions emerge about the manager, about the players, and about whether this group truly believes (deep down) that it is allowed to finish the story, that it can act with freedom when history starts whispering reminders of past failures.

I have made up my mind that winning our first league title is going to be a struggle. It demands that we push hardest not when things are going well, but when we stumble, when doubt creeps in, when the safety of “not losing” tempts us away from the risk of “going for it.” That’s the mental block, and mental blocks don’t dissolve through reassurance; they dissolve through action.

This was an opportunity missed, and opportunities — both in football and in life — are indifferent. They don’t care how prepared you think you are. They don’t wait until you feel comfortable. They arrive when they arrive, and if you don’t grab them with both hands, they have a habit of returning later in less forgiving forms.

At this moment in time, the result isn’t disastrous. A six‑point lead, which was only two weeks ago, still gives us control, margin and belief. But control without conviction is fragile. What matters now is not the table, but the response; not the narratives, but the behaviour. Doors to promised lands don’t reward patience alone. They break down only when you push with enough force, enough belief, enough refusal to hide.

This Arsenal team is close, painfully close. And closeness is dangerous because it tempts you into thinking that arrival is inevitable. It isn’t, though, and it has to be taken. That is the question this Arsenal side will need to answer in due time.
