How It Found Me

Like many people, I found Gracie Abrams through the Taylor Swift universe.

I had touched on some of her music before seeing her open for the Eras Tour in Nashville in 2023, but that performance changed something for me. I left wanting to know more, went home, and dove straight into her catalog.

I have loved her ever since. So when Daughter from Hell arrived, I queued it up on Spotify the day it dropped. I also have tickets to see her on this album’s tour in February 2027, which means I now have several months to become completely normal about these songs.

That process is not going well.

Tracks on Repeat

“Daughter from Hell”

The title track took me completely by surprise.

Based on the title, I expected a song about rebellion, dysfunction, or being the troubled daughter in the family. Instead, Abrams gives us something far more tender and devastating: a daughter looking at her mother and beginning to understand her as a person.

Perhaps one of the saddest parts of growing up is the moment when we stop seeing our parents only as our parents. We begin to recognize that they had fears, failures, ambitions, regrets, and entire inner lives long before we were there to witness them.

The song keeps reaching toward a huge emotional release and then pulling itself back. That restraint makes it hit even harder.

“Hit the Wall”

Admittedly, I’ve had some time with this one as it was pre-released ahead of the album. But, this one captures the restless, almost panicked energy that Abrams does so well.

The song builds and builds as though it is preparing to break wide open. Then, just when you expect the full release, it retreats. It leaves the emotion unresolved which is frustrating in just the right way.

Sometimes there is no cathartic explosion.

“Men Like You”

First: “Men Like You” is not about a man. Which was something I did not see coming.

It is one of the songs that best represents the album’s larger shift in perspective. On earlier records, Abrams was often positioned as the person whose heart had been broken. Here, she is more willing to admit that she may have been the villain in someone else’s version of events.

That does not make her unsympathetic. It makes her more interesting.

My Notes

Daughter from Hell is an album about unrest.

This is not the clean, polished kind where an artist identifies the problem, traces it neatly to its source, and delivers a beautifully crafted conclusion before the final chorus. This unrest stays messy.

Assertions are made and then left hanging. Thoughts appear before they are fully formed. Abrams’s voice jitters, springs forward, and pulls back, often communicating more than the lyrics would if you simply read them on the page.

We definitely live in a pop landscape that often rewards precision & perfect lyrics. Abrams can do that, but on this album, she frequently chooses something less neat. Her writing feels stream-of-consciousness. Not careless, exactly, but emotionally unfinished.

She sounds like someone trying to understand what she feels while she is still feeling it. The songs do not arrive from the other side of the experience, carrying lessons and closure. They exist inside the moment before any of that has been decided. This is an album about a hundred small realizations that your life is no longer the same, even though you have not yet determined how you feel about the change.

The title track is its emotional center for me because it widens that reckoning beyond romance. It is about reaching the age when you begin to recognize your parents’ humanity and realizing that you have inherited more from them than a last name or the shape of your face.

Elsewhere, the album lives in the strange territory between self-awareness and actual change. There are moments when the writing may be too vague or the metaphors too crowded. Sometimes I wanted her to hold one thought still long enough for me to see it clearly.

But perhaps clarity is not the goal.

The emotional experience of Daughter from Hell is the feeling of thoughts arriving too quickly, colliding before they can be resolved. The production mirrors that instability: songs swell toward catharsis, hesitate at the edge, and then deny us the release we expected.

How Quickly I’m Losing Aux Privileges

For anyone who has never had to negotiate control of the car stereo, “aux privileges” are the unofficial right to decide what everyone else has to listen to.

They are granted carefully. They can also be revoked.

So, for For the Record, I am rating albums by how quickly my music choices become a problem for the people trapped in a car with me:

One song only — I found the track. The album can stay where it is.

Who Wrote It

Caro Claire Burke, a writer and features director at Katie Couric Media, makes her fiction debut with Yesteryear.

And what a debut it is!

Burke takes one of the internet’s most carefully curated fantasies of the beautiful, obedient, self-sufficient “traditional wife” and asks the fairly obvious question that fantasy tends to avoid:

What would happen if a woman who built her life around romanticizing the past actually had to live there?

How I Read It

I read the hardcover—the old-fashioned way, which feels especially appropriate for a book about a woman who discovers that the old-fashioned way may not be all it’s cracked up to be.

This one hooked me quickly. The chapters are fast-paced, the tension keeps building, and nearly every time I thought I understood what kind of book I was reading. . .no, I did not.

In a (Spoiler-Free) Nutshell

Natalie Heller Mills has built a massive online following by performing an idealized version of traditional American womanhood. The “trad wife” if you will.

She cooks from scratch. She keeps a beautiful home. She raises her children away from modern distractions. She presents marriage, motherhood, faith, and domesticity as the path back to a simpler and more meaningful life.

Then Natalie wakes up in 1855.

She has no idea how she got there, whether the world around her is real, or whether she has been trapped inside an elaborate hoax. What she does know is that life in the past bears very little resemblance to the soft-focus version she has been selling to millions of followers.

That is all you get because the less you know going into this one, the better!

What I Scribbled in the Margins

I loved this book.

The premise alone would have been enough to get my attention. A trad wife influencer forced to confront the actual historical conditions she has spent years romanticizing? Yes, please, because I am already following that storyline on TikTok (IYKYK).

But Yesteryear is much more than that.

What made the book work for me was the way the story continued to reveal itself. It has the pacing of a thriller, but Burke does not rely on speed alone. She keeps introducing new questions, shifting what Natalie (and the reader) believes, and revealing that the story may be larger and stranger than it first appears.

Every time I thought I had figured out down what road the book was heading, it jerked the wheel.

Natalie is also not written to be loved. I absolutely abhorred her. She is vain, calculating, selfish, and frequently frustrating. She has built an entire brand around (misguided) certainty: certainty about womanhood, motherhood, marriage, faith, and what other women are doing wrong.

Then she lands in a world where her certainty is worth very little.

I appreciated that Burke did not make Natalie more palatable simply because she is the protagonist. The book allows her to be selfish, hypocritical, frightened, intelligent, and occasionally sympathetic (and sometimes within the same chapter).

Buried underneath the suspense is a sharp examination of performance - especially by the perception of others. Natalie performs womanhood for an audience. She performs domestic bliss for the camera. She performs humility while building a profitable personal brand. Even her rejection of modern life depends on extremely modern technology, commerce, and visibility.

The irony is almost too delicious to take.

But the book also asks a more uncomfortable question: how much of womanhood, in any era, involves performing the version of ourselves that keeps us safest, most admired, or most useful to other people?

That is where Yesteryear becomes more than a perceived jab at the trad wife trend. It is interested in tradition, fame, faith, power, and the stories women are taught to tell about the lives they have chosen.

The pacing kept me turning pages, but the twists were not there merely to shock. Each one changed the way I understood something that had come before it. That is my favorite kind of twist: not one that simply jumps from behind a door, but one that makes you mentally return to earlier chapters and reconsider what you thought you knew.

This is also a difficult book to discuss without giving away what makes it fun.

So I will say only this: as you read this, do not become too comfortable with your first explanation. Or your second.

Best Paired With

Something made from scratch, a very modern glass of wine, and the growing realization that nostalgia is much more pleasant when you have indoor plumbing.

Read This If

You liked the feminist unease of The Grace Year, the reality-bending suspense of The Last House on Needless Street, the historical disarray of The Ministry of Time, or the glossy performance and simmering rage of The Push.

How Strongly I’m Making This Your Problem

Buying You a Copy

I am not merely suggesting this one. I need you to read it so we can discuss it.

Please finish it before calling me, though.

I cannot be trusted not to spoil it.

Those days are OVER.

Somewhere between entering my forties and my first mammogram, I became a person with standards. Don’t get me wrong - not about anything genuinely important. I remain capable of uncertainty in my career, my future, and the general dumpster fire state of this country.

But, give me a drink with no ice or a subpar writing utensil and I become completely unhinged. I have become wildly serious about the smallest of things. And - honestly? I am not totally mad about it.

Perhaps this is what happens when you have lived long enough to discover that life already comes with plenty of unavoidable discomfort. At some point, you stop voluntarily accepting the preventable kind.

Which brings me to bread.

BREAD

Bread should have a good crust.

I do not mean a crust that merely exists. I mean the kind that crackles when you cut into it and leaves evidence all over the counter. A proper loaf should make a small mess. Crumbs should scatter. The knife should have to work a little. There should be an audible crunch that makes everyone nearby briefly reconsider whatever sad bread they have been settling for.

This is partly because I have spent enough time caring for a sourdough starter that I now feel entitled to opinions previously reserved for professional bakers and elderly European men.

I can no longer look at a loaf as simply bread. I see fermentation. Structure. Crumb. Potential. I have, regrettably, become someone who might say, “It tastes good, but I think it was slightly under-proofed.”

Spoiler alert: no one asked.

ICE

A drink is only as good as its ice.

I’m sorry. It’s true. Especially when you live in Satan’s seventh circle of hell, otherwise known as the American South from May through October.

I do not want three cloudy cubes floating sadly at the top of a glass. I want enough ice that the drink remains cold until I am finished with it, even if I forget about it for 45 minutes because I started doing something else.

Certain drinks need crushed ice. Others need a sturdy cube. Iced tea requires a full glass. Not half a glass. Not a polite scoop. A glass packed to the top. The cup should sweat. The straw should be cold. There should still be ice rattling around when the drink is gone.

This is not being picky. It is infrastructure.

PENS

Pens are not interchangeable. The brand matters. The color matters. The ink flow matters. Do not give me a cheap BIC pen and expect me not to scream.

Some pens glide. Some scratch. Some make your handwriting look briefly respectable. A good pen should make me believe I might finally become organized. It should suggest that perhaps this meeting will be productive. Perhaps these notes will make sense later. Perhaps I am one properly weighted writing instrument away from controlling my life.

A bad pen can ruin an entire meeting. I have had genuine emotional reactions to losing one of my signature blue TUL pens. I know this sounds dramatic, but I have written with the cheap promotional ballpoints.

I have seen things.

THE RIGHT COFFEE MUG

Coffee tastes better from the correct mug.

Not the most expensive mug. Not necessarily the prettiest one.

The correct one.

It must hold enough coffee without being so large that the final dregs go cold. The handle must feel right. The rim cannot be too thick. It should have enough weight to suggest comfort but not so much that lifting it flares up my tennis elbow.

The shape matters, too. Some mugs are cozy. Others feel strangely corporate. Some seem suited for rainy mornings and books. Others feel like they belong in a conference room beneath fluorescent lighting.

Everyone has a correct mug. They also have several incorrect mugs they refuse to throw away because they were gifts, souvenirs, or seemed like a good idea at TJ Maxx..

SALT

There is table salt, and then there is finishing salt.

This is how they get you.

At first, you think salt is salt. Then someone gives you a little dish of flaky sea salt, and suddenly you are sprinkling it over cookies, tomatoes, eggs, and anything else that holds still long enough.

You begin to understand texture.

You start pinching salt between your fingers instead of shaking it from a container like a commoner. Soon you are standing in the grocery aisle considering several kinds of salt and wondering who, exactly, you have become.

I have crossed over. I am not proud, but dinner is better.

CALENDAR ALERTS

A calendar alert should arrive early enough to be helpful but not so early that I dismiss it and immediately forget the event exists.

This balance has proven to be very difficult.

A notification two days ahead feels irrelevant. A notification ten minutes ahead feels accusatory. I need a reminder to remind me that the first reminder was serious. Possibly another reminder to tell me when to leave. Ideally, one more to warn me that I am now late despite all previous intervention.

Apparently, adulthood is just a series of notifications we keep swiping away until panic becomes an effective scheduling tool. And yet, I keep adding them.

There is still a part of me that believes the correct combination of calendar alerts will someday transform me into a person who arrives early, carries everything she needs, and never says, “I knew there was something today.”

Hope springs eternal.

NECESSARY BEVERAGES

I am rarely without at least three beverages.

One is for hydration. One is caffeine-based. And one is the fun drink, which could be anything from iced tea to a crispy Dr Pepper. Before I leave the house, I do a mental head count.

Water? Present.

Coffee? Present.

Fun drink? Present.

It does not matter whether I am driving six hours or going to the pharmacy. Apparently, every outing now requires a small beverage entourage.

Hydration has become luggage. Do I always finish all three?

Absolutely not.

But I like to know my options are with me.

MY NOTES APP

I have notes for groceries, books, post ideas, quotes, gift ideas, things I need to remember, and several mysterious entries that now mean absolutely nothing to me.

One note simply says, “Ask about the blue one.”

I do not know what the blue one is. Who am I asking?

Another contains a jumble of numbers that is clearly a passcode of some kind that will be urgently needed in the future, but I cannot tell you now what it’s for. Still, I continue adding notes because I remain convinced that Future Me is organized, attentive, and deeply grateful for Present Me’s vague clues.

She is not.

Future Me is usually standing in a grocery aisle staring at a note that says “the good kind” with no indication of what product I was referring to.

But the Notes app remains a place of optimism. Every entry says: this thought matters. I will return to it. I will know what I meant.

Sometimes I do.

And sometimes I am haunted forever by the blue one.

LIGHTING

Overhead lighting has become an act of aggression.

I do not want to sit beneath a ceiling fixture bright enough to expose every speck of dust in the room. I want lamps. Warm lamps. Small lamps tucked into corners. Candles, when appropriate.

I have developed a deep belief that most rooms look better in dim light.

Mess disappears into the shadows. Everyone becomes slightly more attractive.

There is a reason restaurants, hotel lobbies, and people with peaceful homes understand the power of a lamp. Overhead lighting says, “We need to get something done.” A lamp says, “You have done enough.”

At this point, I consider the big light an emergency measure. If it is on, someone should be looking for a lost earring, cleaning up broken glass, or preparing for surgery.

THE RIGHT TOTE BAG

I am a Boat and Tote girl.

I do not want a tote that merely carries things. I want one that can absorb the full administrative burden of my life.

Remember the three beverages? They all need to fit. So do my wallet, charger, notebook, sunglasses, emergency snack, miscellaneous receipts, and at least one item I have been meaning to deal with for three weeks.

It also needs enough structure that I am not elbow-deep in canvas every time I need my keys. I refuse to conduct an outright scavenger hunt just to find a pen.

But practicality is only half the assignment.

I also want to sling it over my shoulder and feel like Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy on the Cape. . . minimal, elegant, possibly on my way to buy hydrangeas.

The more probable reality is that I am carrying some kind of drink vessel, two charging cords, and a pharmacy receipt long enough to qualify as a novella.

Still, the bag is doing its best.

Maybe this is not high maintenance.

Maybe it is simply the natural result of spending enough years learning what works for you and deciding you no longer have to pretend everything else is just as good.

I do not need perfection.

I need a pen that does not skip, enough ice to survive a Mississippi summer, a mug that feels right in my hand, and bread with a crust worth cleaning off the counter.

Life is difficult enough without bad lighting, weak coffee, and containers missing their lids.

At this point, I am not asking for luxury.

I am asking for standards.

The Calamity Club

Who Wrote It

Kathryn Stockett, the Mississippi-born author of The Help, is back with her second novel after seventeen years!

That is quite a long time to wait between books, but apparently she was not sitting around doing nothing. She was busy creating Birdie, Charlie, Meg, and the peculiar collection of women who make up The Calamity Club. The novel marks Stockett’s return to the complicated, funny, underestimated Southern women she writes so vividly.

How I Read It

I started with the hardcover. And, friend, it was not happening. Because she is thick and I was a bit overwhelmed at that time.

I tried. I picked it up, put it down, and picked it up again. I wanted to like it. The ingredients were all there: Mississippi, complicated women, historical fiction, and the promise of a certain amount of trouble. But for whatever reason, I could not find my way into it.

Then I downloaded the audiobook from Hoopla. Cue the angel choir.

Suddenly, the characters stepped off the page and began talking directly to me. And, boy, was I entertained! Narrators Jenna Lamia and January LaVoy gave the women such distinct humor, rhythm, and personality that the entire book opened up.

In a (Spoiler Free) Nutshell

Set in Mississippi during the Great Depression, The Calamity Club follows three very different women whose difficult circumstances bring them together.

There is Birdie, an unmarried woman trying to survive an increasingly desperate situation; Charlie, who arrives carrying a past she would rather leave behind; and Meg, an 11 year old orphan who has already been deemed “unadoptable.”

Their lives collide, and what begins as necessity alliance slowly becomes an unlikely family among women who have been underestimated, discarded, or denied control over their own destinies.

What I Scribbled in the Margins

When I tell you I was pulled into this audiobook, I definitely mean I was enchanted by the first 5 minutes. The plot is engaging, the setting is vivid, and the history behind it is both fascinating and horrifying. But the characters are what made the book for me.

A perhaps unpopular confession before I go any further: I was never a big fan of The Help.

There were parts of the book (and movie) that gave me the ick. Even when I could recognize what worked about it, I never fully settled into the way the story handled race, voice, and whose perspective was ultimately centered.

So I came to The Calamity Club with some hesitation. This book did not give me that same feeling.

That does not mean it is beyond criticism, or that every historical issue is handled perfectly. But the characters felt more fully human to me, and the story did not leave me with the same uneasy sense that someone else’s pain had been shaped primarily for another character’s growth. I was able to relax into the book, enjoy these women, and trust the story in a way I never quite could with The Help.

That being said - these women are funny, but not in a polished, clever way like the author spent days perfecting the perfecting every comeback. They are funny in the way only real Southern women can be when circumstances have become so absurd that your only options are to laugh, cuss, or start scheming. Maybe a little of all three.

Birdie, Charlie, and Meg are complicated, stubborn, resourceful, exasperating, and completely themselves. They make poor decisions. They misunderstand one another. They say things they should probably keep to themselves. They also possess the particular kind of courage that develops when the world has already decided you are powerless.

The book deals with serious subjects, everything from poverty, institutional cruelty, women’s autonomy, eugenics, and the ways vulnerable people can be abused by those who claim to know what is best for them. But, these women are never reduced to the terrible things that are happening around them. They continually remain capable of surprising themselves and those around them.

I am not exaggerating when I say I think of this book all the time. This is not a story about perfect, polite women overcoming adversity through flawless moral character. It is about a collection of women who find one another in the middle of chaos and decide (wisely? questionably?) that they might as well do something about it. I absolutely loved spending time with these characters.

I initially struggled to connect with the book on the page (which truly could have been more about me than the book itself), the audiobook turned it into one of those stories I kept finding reasons to continue. One more chapter while driving. One more while doing something around the house. One more because I needed to know what these women were about to get into next.

My official hot take: the audiobook may be the definitive way to experience this one, especially if the page count (656!!) isn’t something you can tackle right now.

The Part(s) I Underlined

There are several lines that made me laugh, but I want this space to hold a couple I am still thinking about long after I finished the book:

“All I’m asking for is a decent view, some hard candies, and something to damn read. Is that too much to ask for in life?”

“I have been told I tend to overthink things. Well I have known enough people to underthink things and could stand to put a little more thought in their decisions.”

Best Paired With

A front porch, a cold iced tea (preferably in a Mason jar), and the kind of afternoon that can accommodate several bad ideas.

Read This If

You like the fierce female friendships of Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, the found family of The Secret Life of Bees, the unruly Southern women of Joshilyn Jackson or you’ve cozied up with a book by Fannie Flagg.

My Rating System: How Strongly I’m Making This Your Problem

Stars have never told me quite enough. A 4 star book might be perfectly pleasant, or it might be a book I have already recommended to 12 different people and worked into numerous unrelated conversations.

So, for my reviews, I am rating books by the level of inconvenience I intend to cause everyone around me:

And I wish I could tell you that my absence was a part of some spectacular creative sabbatical or a fabulous vacation. Maybe I stepped away to immerse myself in a books or that I plunged myself into work for awhile.

It was not. Life just simply got loud.

Then, it got complicated.

Then, it got a little scary.

Somewhere in the middle of trying to keep up with everything happening around me, writing became one of those things that I kept meaning to do when I had more time, more energy, or something I felt needed to be said.

Well, you know how that goes. You miss a week. Then, the next thing you now, it’s been a month. Once enough time passes, the more you tend to believe that you need to come back with an explanation or something profound. Some kind of Grand Re-Entry Essay. Polished. Meaningful.

That’s not what this is.

I am still processing parts of the last few months. I am still deciding which stories are mine to tell, only mine to carry, or never see the light of day. I do not have a grand conclusion. I am not coming out of a difficult chapter as some completely transformed woman who bounces out of bed at 3am, drinks enough water, and never has road rage.

BUT - I have learned a few things in the meantime.

First, I learned that rest is not wasted time. (I know. Revolutionary, right?)

I have spent years treating rest as something to be earned when everything was done. All the emails answered. Every problem solved. No one needed anything from me. This, as it turns out, is an excellent way to NEVER get any rest.

Because, even when I did stop, I was rarely resting. I was recovering just enough to resume the grind. There is a big difference there. Real rest is not always picture-perfect. It can sometimes mean ‘rotting’ on a couch in the middle of the day when your system has had enough. It can also mean getting in bed early, without doing the dishes while leaving your text messages on read.

This has been a difficult lesson for me to learn. I, as many of us, are accustomed to making rest justify itself. If we ‘earn’ it, that will make it better or more fulfilling. It will make us work better, think more clearly, or be more productive if we know we truly earned the rest we are taking.

But, maybe just being tired is reason enough.

The second big lesson I’ve learned in this space is that fear changes your priorities. It quiets things that you thought were important and it amplifies things you were ignoring.

When life feels uncertain, a surprising number of things reveal themselves as deeply unimportant. Emails don’t feel as urgent. Plans can easily be changed. People being ‘disappointed’ in you feels . . .survivable. You are less impressed by ‘being busy’ and become more aware of who you’re surrounding yourself with. You start to notice things you didn’t before. You crave uneventful days. You forget your phone. . .on purpose.

Fear also reminds you that you can’t protect your people from everything. No matter how hard you try.

for the record: I do not particularly care for this lesson.

I would much prefer that my love and support act as a force field around my people. That if I care deeply enough, worry thoroughly enough, and anticipate every possible problem, everyone I love will remain safe and whole. But, that’s not the way it works. And when something occurs that makes you painfully and heartbreakingly aware of that - it’s jarring.

Don’t get me wrong. I am not suddenly a person that treasures every single moment. I still get frustrated by people that stop in the middle of a walkway, holding up foot traffic. I still get angry when my family doesn’t put things away where they belong. I curse. . . a lot. Perspective has not made me a saint.

However, it has made me more conscious of the life I have underneath all the noise. It’s made me question how much of myself I want to keep giving to things that do not deserve it. It makes me strive to leave space to rest when I need it, change my mind when it’s necessary, and to be present without everything needing to be a lesson or a plan.

So that’s why I am writing today. Not because I’ve gotten to the other side of something or processed everything I am feeling. Because it’s something I missed. I missed the strange comfort of gathering all the loose pieces and shards in my mind and arranging them into something fun or though provoking or engaging. No grand re-entry. No promise of consistency or organization.

There are some things in life you can ignore and they will go away.

A passing idea.

A version of yourself that sounds nice in theory but never really takes hold.

A curiosity that burns bright for a week and then flickers away just as fast.

Some things are meant to be fleeting that never find a place to reside in your bones. But, then there are the other things - the ones that do not leave you alone. They find a place in your brain and dig in their claws. They come at you in different voices, through different people, at different times. They show up in conversations you did not plan to have and questions you did not mean to entertain. They return when you have already explained to yourself, quite reasonably, why now is just not the time. . . or this is just not your path.

Then, it pops up again.

Lately, I have been thinking about what it means when the same possibility keeps finding you before you feel ready to consider it. What it means when life, or circumstance, or the people around you, keep placing the same question in your hands, and you still cannot quite imagine it as a real possibility for yourself because the timing feels wrong, self-doubt is loud, or the whole thing still feels too hard to reach.

At times like these, it would be easier if the answer arrived with a promise of certainty. We’d all appreciate it if the next step came with a detailed spreadsheet, a guarantee, or maybe just a little note from the universe confirming that no humiliation, risk, or unforeseen consequences would be involved. I would like to formally state that I am extremely open to that kind of guidance should it ever become available.

But, as we know, most real decisions do not arrive that way. Most of the time, what arrives first is the repetition. Another nudge, one more phone call, another person bringing up in conversation with a side eye to make sure you’re paying attention. Over and over. . . until you want to scream into the void: “Ok, I get it.”

However, this is where things get complicated (at least for me), because repetition is not the same thing as clarity. This is the point where you have to really look at the reason behind the repeat. Sometimes a thing keeps coming back because it is unresolved. Sometimes it returns because it is a wound that just hasn’t healed. Sometimes it lingers because fear is obsessive and latches on like a tick in the summer. It’s important to recognize that not every repeated thought is a wise one, not every open door is yours, and not every invitation deserves your RSVP.

BUT . . . . some of them do deserve to be taken seriously.

Here’s where I (and maybe most of us) resist. It’s not because we are incapable of discernment, but because when you take something seriously - it becomes real. You start getting that flutter of excitement. That twinge of hope that sounds a lot like, “Could this be for me?” The minute you stop dismissing it, you enter the reality of what this might ask of you. You have to face the risk and admit your fears. It becomes dangerous.

It forces you to confront how often you have mistaken uncertainty for a stop sign. And I think a lot of us do this. We confuse hesitation with wisdom. We let self-doubt masquerade as our “voice of reason”. We call our reluctance “discernment” when sometimes it is just fear.

I know this move. I could teach a MasterClass in it.

It is one thing to reject something because it is wrong for you. That is knowing your own life well enough not to be tricked into the wrong future or path. It is another thing entirely to keep resisting something because you are not sure you can hold the weight of what comes with it.

That is a harder truth. The question goes from, “Do I want this?” to, “What exactly am I waiting for before I allow myself to take this seriously?”

An easier answer?

A guarantee of success?

Immunity from criticism?

A promise that every old mistake will stay buried and every vulnerable part of your life will remain untouched?

We know better than to expect that kind of certainty, particularly from the decisions that actually matter.

I keep hoping the answer will become easier before it becomes necessary. But that is not how things work. Some decisions do not get easier first. They just get clearer (and more demanding) in their persistence. They keep returning until it becomes harder to dismiss them than to admit they matter.

The fear is still there. The risks are still real. It doesn’t mean that every pattern is a path. It only means there may come a point when the repetition itself has earned your attention.

Don’t get it twisted. Part of you already knows what you want. What you do not know yet is whether you are ready for everything that answer might require.

This truly is the most honest place to begin though. A place where just the quiet observation that something keeps showing up might be enough to wonder whether it’s asking something of you that you’re uniquely suited for.

There is a strange kind of hope in that - the refusal to keep treating your own life like it is happening to someone else and the courage to realize that when something keeps knocking at your door, it may not be a coincidence.

Some things really are passing thoughts. They fade when ignored because they were never meant to take root. But some things keep returning because they belong to the shape of your life before they belong in your comfort zone.

I do not think the question is whether you are completely sure. I think the question is whether you are willing to admit that uncertainty is not always a no. Sometimes it is just what it feels like to stand near a life that might ask more of you than you planned to give.

It is called the SHIELD Act (which stands for “Safeguard Honest Integrity in Elections for Lasting Democracy”), and Governor Tate Reeves signed it into law on April 1, 2026. It takes effect on July 1, 2026. You can read the full bill as passed here.

Supporters say the law is about election integrity. The actual function is paperwork.

At its core, the SHIELD Act creates a new system for checking citizenship when someone registers to vote and requires annual checks of Mississippi’s voter rolls against a federal immigration database called SAVE (Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements database). If a voter is flagged and cannot quickly produce the right documents, their registration can be pushed into pending status or eventually rejected.

That is the clean version.

The more accurate version is this: the law does not openly say certain people should have a harder time voting. It just creates a process that predictably falls hardest on people whose lives are not neatly reflected in old government records.

Who does that most likely impact? Mississippi lawmakers’ favorite punching bags: women, LGBTQ+ people, naturalized citizens, poor people, rural people, elderly people, and anyone who has ever discovered that “just get the paperwork” is the kind of sentence only said by someone who has never had to chase down a missing document across three offices, two counties, and one workday they could not afford to miss.

What the SHIELD Act actually does

The language of the bill is constructed so you won’t read between the lines. But, here is the plain-language version:

When someone submits a voter registration application in Mississippi, their information is first compared against Department of Public Safety driver’s license and identification records. If that information suggests the applicant may not be a citizen (or if the applicant does not provide a driver’s license number and the system cannot retrieve one through DPS) the registrar must then run the applicant’s information through the federal SAVE database. (What’s that?)

If either database indicates the applicant may not be a citizen, the registrar sends notice by first-class mail and may also contact the person by phone or email. The applicant then has 30 days to provide proof of citizenship. The law lists acceptable proof as a birth certificate, passport, naturalization documentation, or other citizenship proof recognized under federal immigration law.

If the person provides the documents, they can be registered. If they do not, they are marked “pending.” A voter in pending status may cast an affidavit ballot, but that ballot will count only if the voter provides the required documents within five days after casting it. If the person never resolves the issue, the registration can ultimately be marked “rejected.”

The law also requires the Mississippi Secretary of State to conduct an annual statewide comparison of the voter rolls against the SAVE database no later than 180 days before a regularly scheduled federal general election. Potential matches are then sent to local officials, who begin the same notice-and-documentation process. The bill says a voter cannot be removed solely on a SAVE match, and no SAVE-based removal may happen within 90 days of a federal election.

How Did We Get Here

The bill cleared its final legislative hurdle on March 24, 2026, when the Mississippi Senate voted 33–18 to concur with the House version and send it to the governor. Mississippi Today reported that supporters said the measure would boost confidence in election results, while critics said it would suppress some eligible citizens’ votes.

The vote count makes clear that this bill split sharply along party lines. But the deeper issue is not whether citizenship matters for voting; that is already settled. It is whether the state can impose a new documentation barrier without showing a problem large enough to justify it.

Supporters of the law say it is a common sense citizenship verification measure designed to reassure the public that only citizens are voting. Governor Reeves called it “another win for election integrity,” and the law’s legislative supporters have tossed around isolated cases as justification for these broad checks.

Mississippi has not uncovered widespread noncitizen voting. There is simply no evidence that noncitizens are voting in large numbers in Mississippi. Instead, backers argue that even one instance can damage public confidence in elections. Sen. Jeremy England (one of the bill’s sponsors) put it plainly: even one case, he argued, throws election integrity “into doubt.”

Take a pause and let that settle: This law does not respond to a proven pattern of fraudulent voting. It is feeding a politics built on suspicion, not evidence.

The law is framed around noncitizens, and in practice, that means naturalized citizens and immigrant communities are the first people placed under suspicion without proof of a real problem. However, that is never where a system like this ends. Once voting rights are tied more tightly to paperwork and government discretion, the burden ripples out to other communities whose lives and records do not fit neatly inside that system.

Mississippi Women: Pay Attention

The easiest way to understand who is most burdened by a law like this is to ask a very simple question: Whose documents are most likely not to match?

There are a few obvious answers here. For women, though, the answer is immediate.

Women who changed their names after marriage. Women who changed them back after divorce. Women who use one version of a name socially and another legally. Women whose identification documents and birth records do not line up perfectly because of . . . well. . .life.

An estimated 647,000 Mississippi women whose last names do not match their birth certificates. They also pointed out that only about 20% of Mississippians have a passport, the lowest rate in the country.

And that is before you even get to the cost.

Birth certificates are not free. Replacing missing identification is not free. Transportation is not free. Taking time off work is not free. Standing in one line to get the paper that allows you to stand in another line to protect a constitutional right is not free.

This is a poll tax with better branding. It swaps the old blunt force for bureaucracy, but the function is familiar: make voting more expensive, more time-consuming, and more dependent on paperwork that not everyone has at the ready. Women are an obvious example. They are not the only ones.

LGBTQ+ Community: Pay Attention

The same logic aligns with LGBTQ+ voters, especially transgender voters and others who have legally changed their names.

When the state builds a voting system that depends on names matching across databases and underlying citizenship records, the people most likely to get jammed up are the people whose documents do not all update at the same speed or in the same way. National reporting on the federal SAVE America Act has already flagged that people with name changes due to marriage, divorce, or gender transition face heightened risk of documentation problems under proof-of-citizenship systems. While the federal SAVE America Act contains an explicit provision requiring states to create a process for handling name discrepancies, Mississippi’s SHIELD Act does not include that same explicit name/mismatch fix in the bill text that went to the governor.

This matters.

When lawmakers know a mismatch problem exists and still write a law that leaves people to navigate it through a vague process, the burden does not disappear. It just gets handed to the county clerks and voters to sort out on the back end. Because this is where voting rights are often weakened now: in small bureaucratic moments, where a mismatch becomes a barrier.

MS SHIELD & SAVE America Act: A Comparison

The SHIELD Act did not just pop into the heads of the Mississippi lawmakers. They are not that creative. It is part of a larger national push.

The federal SAVE America Act would require documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections and would also require states to use SAVE and other data sources to identify and remove noncitizens from voter rolls. Mississippi’s SHIELD Act mirrors that same burden-shifting logic, even if the details are not identical.

Mississippi is also not acting alone. Florida, Mississippi, South Dakota, and Utah have enacted proof-of-citizenship-related laws this year. In Florida, civil rights groups challenged the new law almost immediately. Kansas offers an even starker warning: a prior proof-of-citizenship law there blocked more than 31,000 eligible U.S. citizens before federal courts declared it unconstitutional. This playbook is literally being passed around the country.

A lot of these laws rely on the public hearing the word “database” and assuming that means certainty. It does not.

The Brennan Center has warned that SAVE was designed primarily for verifying eligibility for government benefits, not as a citizenship verification tool for election administration. It is not complete, and using it on a large scale for election purposes raises the risk of mistakes that can disenfranchise eligible voters. This is crucial to understand. Once a state starts using imperfect database matching as the gatekeeper to voting scrutiny, the mistakes are inevitable. They impact real people.

For its part, Mississippi is already operating in an election administration environment where aggressive tools are being used even when accuracy is questionable at best. Earlier this year, the Secretary of State’s office used unverified credit data from Experian to check voter addresses statewide, and reported errors wrongly made some voters inactive. Almost 50,000 registered voters had been made inactive in Mississippi due to address conflicts after the rollout of that system.

Modern-day voter suppression doesn’t announce itself. It shows up as a faulty database, a cumbersome verification process, and a manufactured narrative perpetuating non-existent problems. In 2026, it’s showing up as the SHIELD Act in Mississippi.

The Bottom Line

The SHIELD Act is now law. It takes effect on July 1. While it is being sold as a measure to protect elections, its real purpose is to make some eligible voters carry more of the burden of proving they deserve to participate.

For now, the most important thing voters can do is not wait until November to figure out whether this law could affect them. If your name has changed, if you do not have a passport, if you were born outside the United States and became a citizen later, or if your official records do not all match, now is the time to check your voter registration, make sure your information is current, and start gathering any documents you may need. That means confirming how your name appears on your registration, locating a birth certificate, passport, or naturalization papers if you have them, and making a plan early if replacing records would take time or money.

Laws like this thrive on delay, confusion, and last-minute panic. The best protection, at least for now, is to get ahead of it before the state has a chance to turn paperwork into disenfranchisement.

MISSISSIPPI RESOURCES FOR THOSE THAT MAY BE IMPACTED

• Mississippi Secretary of State / YallVote.ms: This is the best first stop to check voter registration status, update registration information, and get basic election guidance.

• Your county Circuit Clerk’s office: In Mississippi, Circuit Clerks handle voter registration locally, and they are also the office that can issue a free Mississippi Voter ID card to registered voters who need one.

• Your municipal clerk’s office: This is another local place where you can register to vote or ask local election administration questions.

• Mississippi State Department of Health, Vital Records: This is the office to contact for birth certificates, corrections to records, and replacement copies. Mississippi’s Vital Records office offers ordering options by mail, phone, online, and in person. Currently, it lists birth certificates as costing $17 for the first copy with a $6 fee for additional copies.

• Mississippi Department of Public Safety / Driver Service Bureau: This office is useful if the issue is a driver’s license, state ID, address update, duplicate license, or ID mismatch. DPS’ website lists statewide service locations and online self-service options.

There was a time in my life when a good weekend meant plans, people, and a reason to wear something cute that might hurt a little. Or a lot.

I liked being out. I liked the general feeling of being where things were happening. A Saturday well spent might have involved brunch, a nice dinner at a table full of friends, and maybe something vaguely fun but exhausting.

And now?

Old Greta would die if she could see me now.

I have officially entered my grandma era.

Not in a casual, ironic way. I mean a full-blown lifestyle conversion. The hobbies were only the gateway drug. What started innocently with a sourdough starter and reading glasses has expanded into an entire worldview built around comfort, practical pleasures, and a deeply held belief that there is nothing I need to be doing outside my home after 8 p.m.

Yes, hobbies are part of the evolution. Needlepoint. Sourdough starter and baking. Watercolor. Gardening. I realize this list makes me sound like I should own a candy dish and have very strong opinions about hydrangeas. That’s fair. But the bigger shift is not just what I do. It is how I now want to live.

For starters, I am never without a snack, a hard candy, or tissues in my massive Mary Poppins bag. I do not even know when this happened. One day I was a normal woman carrying a purse, and the next, I was prepared to emotionally and logistically support a small group of people through a mild crisis. Need a mint? Tissue? Granola bar? Lint roller? I’ve got you. Now, I am on the hunt for a porch goose, and the confirmation of shipment on my L.L. Bean boat & tote was met with the same excitement I used to have when someone screamed “SHOTS!”

I mean. . . .who am I?

Then there are the shoes.

There was once a time when the question was whether a shoe completed the outfit. That is no longer the question. The question now is whether the shoe respects my sensitive arches. Sensible shoes are elite status.

I said what I said.

If a shoe is cute but asks too much of me physically, emotionally, or spiritually, it can stay at the store. I have no interest in suffering for fashion when there are supportive, reasonable options available to me. The older I get, the more I understand that true style is looking put together while still being able to feel your toes.

And home? Home is better than most places.

I do not know how else to explain this except to say that the peace is simply too good. Fresh bread I made myself. Comfy house shoes. A warm throw blanket always within arm’s reach. One lamp on. A cup of tea. Maybe a BritBox show playing in the background while I work on my latest needlepoint project. Maybe just the deeply satisfying act of puttering around my own house with no one asking me for anything.

Nothing sounds better than puttering. I freaking love to putter.

That sentence alone should qualify me for some sort of honorary AARP membership.

My ideal Saturday used to involve heavy lifting at the gym or a class where I’d sweat through my clothes, bottomless mimosas, a slate of beauty appointments, and the real possibility of a night that turned into 2 am and Waffle House. Now, my ideal Saturday starts with coffee and a book. Maybe a little journaling with my favorite book of prompts. A thrift store run so I can hunt for one of the increasingly specific items on my ever-growing list of “vintage things I must own.” [a real title of a real note kept in my Notes App] Then blanket on the couch, tea in hand, earbuds in, audiobook playing while I work on my needlepoint like a woman who has absolutely found her lane.

And let me tell you: this lifestyle is gentle. It is calm. It believes in arch support.

Thrift stores, in particular, have become one of the clearest signs that the transformation is complete. I do not approach a thrift store casually. I approach it with purpose. I am not just browsing. I am foraging, practically feral. Somewhere in there could be the exact little thing I didn’t know I needed but will now feel was destined for me all along. The fervor with which I pursued a trinket shelf — which I now proudly own — can only be compared to the energy I once brought to planning a full-blown, drinks-galore Saturday night. And the vintage Fenton hobnail milk glass piece I found last weekend? Please. I’m exercising tremendous restraint by not making it the subject of its own essay (see the middle picture below).

This is what passes for excitement in my life now, and frankly, I am HERE for it.

Needlepoint remains the funniest (and most recent) part of this whole evolution, mostly because of how seriously and quickly I have made this my entire personality. I used to want a social life. I now want a smutty audiobook and the latest Penny Linn drop. I will rearrange my schedule for stitching time. I will build an evening around it. I will talk about the local needlepoint shop’s latest trunk show or a new canvas release with enough enthusiasm to suggest I am still, in some form, chasing a social thrill. It just turns out my idea of a “thrill” now involves embroidery scissors and a witty needleminder.

There is nothing I need to be doing outside my house after 8 p.m. Nothing. Crowds make me overwhelmed. More than one glass of wine will put me out of commission for three to five business days. Networking is for the youngbloods. I have done my time. I no longer need to stand in a loud room making strained conversation when I could be at home in my slippers, eating fresh bread and homemade butter while disassociating over my latest stitching project and yet another viewing of Colin Firth’s Mr. Darcy.

This is what younger me could never have understood. She thought fun had to look a certain way. She would look at me now: digging through thrift store shelves, carrying emergency snacks and dissolvable fiber packets, choosing footwear based on orthopedic values, heading to bed at 9 p.m. with genuine excitement, and she would say, “You spent Saturday doing what???????”

And I would say: yes. Exactly. I spent Saturday doing what I wanted.

That is the whole game now.

That is what makes the grandma era so unexpectedly powerful. It is not about giving up. It is about finally becoming honest about what feels good, what is worth my energy, and about the fact that peace, once you really find it, starts looking a whole lot hotter than being booked and busy for no reason.

I’m not even sure there is a line I’m unwilling to cross anymore. I used to think the muumuu and the hard candy were the edge of the cliff. Now? My more “seasoned” friends may have had the right idea on all of it. I’m willing to keep testing the theory. I’m one house dress and a butterscotch candy away from full acceptance of my current lot in life. I’m not ruling anything out at this point.

It is just what happens when you stop needing your life to look fun from the outside and start caring a lot more that it feels good from the inside. And if that means I now measure the success of an evening by the softness of my blanket, the supportiveness of my shoes, and whether I got to piddle around my house in peace, then so be it.

Not healthcare. Not public health. Not maternal care. Drug trafficking.

That is what Mississippi lawmakers have done with House Bill 1613, a bill whose title is about aggravated drug trafficking but whose House-passed text was amended to “restrict the sale of abortion-inducing drugs.” The bill defines those drugs inside the trafficking statute, makes prescribing or dispensing them with the intent to terminate a pregnancy a crime, and imposes a penalty of one to ten years in prison. It also specifically authorizes the attorney general to bring civil actions tied to those alleged violations.

If that sounds absolutely bonkers to you. . . it should.

This is not the language of a state trying to make thoughtful policy. It is the language of a state that cannot leave women alone. A state that already has a near-total abortion ban looked around and decided the problem was that pregnancy had not yet been criminalized enough. So now we get this: reproductive care dragged into the statutory universe of trafficking, prison, injunctions, and civil penalties, all dressed up as morality. Give me a break.

The thing that makes this bill so vicious is not just the cruelty. It is the recklessness.

Because the medications at issue are not some one-purpose boogeyman invented for campaign mailers. Misoprostol is frequently used in obstetrics and gynecology for miscarriage management, induction of labor, cervical ripening, and treatment of postpartum hemorrhage. The combination of mifepristone and misoprostol has been shown to be more effective for miscarriage management and is the protocol recommended by ACOG. In other words, Mississippi lawmakers are not merely posturing around abortion. They are messing with medications used in ordinary, urgent, and sometimes life-saving reproductive care.

That is the part I cannot get past. In a rational world, the fact that a medication is used in miscarriage care and postpartum emergencies would make lawmakers tread lightly and with careful consideration. In Mississippi, apparently, it just makes them louder.

To be fair, the sponsor told Mississippi Today she does not want to restrict access to these drugs when they are medically necessary, including during miscarriage.

Well, that’s just great. . . and also beside the point.

Laws are not enforced according to the tidiest version of a sponsor’s intentions. They are enforced according to text, fear, politics, and the risk calculations of people who know they may be the ones left explaining themselves later. Mississippi Today reports that experts warned the bill could have far-reaching consequences because lawmakers’ intent has very little bearing on how laws are enforced in practice.

This is how damage gets done in states like Mississippi. Not always through the dramatic moment lawmakers imagine when they pound a podium and pat themselves on the back for “defending life”. It happens through hesitation and confusion. Through one more unnecessary medical delay, one more legal question, one more layer draped over a medical decision that should have been left to a woman and her doctor.

That is what Mississippi never seems willing to admit: when you drag healthcare into criminal law, the fear does not stay neatly confined to the exact circumstance you claim to target. It has far-reaching effects. It teaches providers to second-guess themselves and institutions to overcorrect. Restrictions on these medications can jeopardize effective miscarriage management and can also result in treatment delays in emergencies such as hemorrhage during labor and delivery.

And for what?

Not even, apparently, for a law that is likely to do the grand thing its supporters suggest it will. Legal experts say the proposal will “almost certainly” have no impact on out-of-state providers because shield laws in 22 states and Washington, D.C., protect providers, patients, and helpers from certain out-of-state investigations, lawsuits, and prosecutions. So once again, the likely result is not some triumphant end to abortion medication. It is Mississippi making in-state care more dangerous and more chaotic while pretending it has solved something.

Which, honestly, feels like the whole story of this state’s approach to women.

Mississippi has spent years demonstrating performative righteousness while women suffer the consequences. The bans. The restrictions. The threats. The cruelty. All the while, supporters and “pro-life” mouthpieces expect us not to notice that the practical outcome is always the same: less care, more fear, and a government far too interested in treating women’s bodies like an afterthought.

Mississippi is not content to outlaw abortion. It wants the spectacle of enforcement and the satisfaction of punishment. It wants the splashy headline and the sense that it has once again put women back in their place. That is why a drug-trafficking bill can become a pregnancy bill without anybody involved seeming especially embarrassed by the insanity of that notion.

But, let’s be honest, Mississippi does not excel in self-awareness.

This is not protection.
This is not reverence for life.
This is not moral clarity.

It is control dressed up in statutory language. It does not inspire respect. It inspires disgust.

A state that responds to pregnancy with trafficking language, prison time, and civil penalties is not honoring life. A state that makes doctors more fearful of prescribing medications used in miscarriage care is not protecting women. A state that keeps aligning healthcare with punishment is not acting in the best interest of its citizens. It is acting exactly like what it is: more interested in domination than care, and more comfortable with women suffering than women choosing.

Mississippi keeps asking women to trust that lawmakers know the difference between morality and control. Meanwhile, lawmakers keep proving they do not even know the difference between care and contraband.

And, frankly, that should scare the shit out of everyone.

UPDATE (APRIL 1, 2026): Since this piece was first drafted, Mississippi lawmakers have passed House Bill 1613 and sent it to Gov. Tate Reeves. According to Mississippi Today, the bill passed the House 76-38 and the Senate 37-15, which means this is no longer just another ugly proposal floated during the session. It is now one signature away from becoming law. And that signature belongs to Gov. Tate Reeves.

What was already a reckless attempt to drag reproductive healthcare into the language of trafficking and punishment has now cleared the Legislature, despite continued warnings that the bill’s vagueness could chill miscarriage care, postpartum treatment, and other non-abortion medical uses of these medications.

As usual, the people most likely to carry the fear and fallout will not be the lawmakers congratulating themselves for their values. It will be ordinary Mississippians — especially poor women — left to absorb the consequences.

Maybe it’s the water tower looming over Main Street, the same way it always has. Whatever it is, I feel it before I’ve even parked the car. The gravel under my tires, the view out the windshield, the quiet recognition of a place that has known every version of me. Before I have hugged anybody, before I have set down my bag, before I have decided what we’re doing for supper or who I need to visit while I’m in town, there is that first rush of relief. It is snuggling up on the couch because I “haven’t been home in forever”, even if it has only been a couple of weeks (according to my niece and nephew). It is porch nights and slow mornings overlooking the country and cow pastures. It is laughter around the dinner table and crickets in the evening. It is the landmarks that pull me straight back to high school, to the freer version of myself who had not yet learned just how loud and messy life could get. It is also the strange comfort of noticing what has changed and what has stayed exactly the same.

In my regular life, everything asks something of me.

My work asks. My phone asks. My calendar asks. My responsibilities ask. Even the things and people I love can begin to ask. There are decisions to make, people to care for, deadlines to meet, and seasons where the noise in my own head gets so loud I can barely hear myself think.

Sometimes your spirit doesn’t need calm. Sometimes it needs to watch grown women behave badly in a way that makes your own problems feel smaller, and your choices feel admirable. Housewives is what I reach for when I need distraction and I’m feeling full-on “rage against the machine,” because nothing cuts through existential dread like rich people arguing about manners at a dinner party they scheduled for cameras.

But, I’m here to tell you the “woo” can work and it’s my (maybe controversial) take that you need a little bit of it in your life. The woo is as simple as basic human systems maintenance, but it just needs better branding.

Look, I get it. If you grew up around the kind of mentality that believes feelings should be swallowed down with your sweet tea and handled later (translation: never), then “sitting quietly with your emotions” sounds like the worst possible thing ever.

But, adulthood news flash: sometimes you can’t outwork your stress. You can’t out-achieve your way out of grief, trauma, or whatever else makes you grind your teeth together. You can only “be strong” so much before your body starts keeping score. (Great book, by the way)

The ‘Woo’ Isn’t the Problem - It’s the Vibe.

Let’s admit it. It’s Al Gore’s Internet that did the damage here. There is an entire aesthetic built around softly lit coping mechanisms and expensive salts & potions. There’s a whole section at Barnes and Noble with books alleging to fix your life. You can pay almost anyone a hefty sum to do almost anything to you and your body in the name of health & wellness.

I’m not here to knock it.

I love a good stress candle. I’ve purchased more than my share of cute journals and books. A spa day is truly my Super Bowl. But, if these “tools” make you feel like you have to be calm, wealthy, thin, and/or wearing all-white linen whilst humming and chanting to access your peace. . .then, yeah, you’re going to hate it, and you’re probably not going to do it.

Here’s my pitch:

Yoga does not have to be a spiritual pretzel twist done in a 250-degree sauna. It can simply be stretching while paying attention to your body on the floor of your bedroom.

Meditation doesn’t have to be emptying your mind while sitting criss-cross applesauce in a room that smells like sage. It’s noticing what’s already there in the quiet moments between Zoom calls.

Journaling does not have to be a performative “Dear Diary” moment in an expensive Louis Carmen notebook. It’s processing without the collateral damage in a notebook you picked up at the Dollar General.

Your ‘woo’ can be simple, messy, and fit in your life/budget/schedule. Because your body is keeping a meticulous record of every held breath, jaw clench, late-night doom-scroll, mini-breakdown in the car, stomach issue. . . . you get it. Stress is not only an emotion. It’s physiology. It’s hormones. It’s tension patterns. It’s insomnia. It’s your shoulders taking up residence somewhere near your ears. And if you don’t find a way for your body to get rid of what it’s holding, it will improvise.

I’ve recently lived through a run of hard moments that stacked up fast, and I watched it spill into my body, my health, and my mental space. That’s the thing about carrying too much for too long: it catches up to you and often at the worst possible time.

“But I Don’t Have Time for This”

Yep. You’re busy. But, I bet you don’t have time for a massive medical crisis or a complete and utter breakdown simply because you wouldn’t carve out an hour of the ‘woo’. No one has time to become a monk, but it’s easier than you think to make some time for yourself. Here’s how I fit my ‘woo’ in amid the chaos:

(1) The Two-Minute Breath Reset: No incense needed. Just two minutes of box breathing. And I mean a full two minutes. None of this “that felt like two minutes” BS. I set an actual time.

Do not sleep on breath work and the healing powers of a good inhale/exhale moment. When you’re out in the world, and everything feels heavy or too loud, it’s an underrated superpower to step aside, take a breath, reset, and keep moving. I was not a believer until this kept a pretty severe panic attack from escalating. Now I try to use it before things get wild.

(2) Unhinged Journaling: I have had some form of a journaling practice since I was 14. I love to write and have filled notebooks to stock a small library. Most of them still live in my Mama’s storage shed. But, I have a pattern: when I’m really stressed or going through it, journaling is usually the first thing to drop off my routine.

Not this time.

In this hard season, I wrote with the intensity of an overly caffeinated squirrel. I was petty. I was messy. I cried. I used my pen to call people out. I cursed. . . A LOT. And honestly? It was the most cleansing journaling I have ever done. I leaned all the way in, and it was exactly what I needed because it didn’t just help me vent; it shed light in dark places when I needed it most.

On the days when life feels heavy and you cannot add one more item to your to-do list, give yourself an extra 5-10 minutes before you get out of bed to intentionally move your body - stretch, twist, roll your shoulders, whatever feels good and is available to you. Arguably, you’re in the most comfortable place you’ll be all day. You might as well use it to remind your body that it’s not stuck.

(4) Meditation Cheat Codes: This was the ‘woo’ tool that I could never buy into. Try to make my mind slow down and quiet my anxiety? Without medication? Not happening.

But enough people I trust recommended it, so I had to find a way to at least try. Here’s what I know about me: make it feel like work, and I’m out; make it feel fun/luxurious/ creative/doable, and I’m all in.

That’s how I landed on something called the 100 Breaths Technique. It’s exactly what it sounds like: get comfy, close your eyes, take 100 breaths, and count every single one. The point is simple—your brain gets so busy counting that it has less room to spiral. It’s not revolutionary. It’s just effective.

I try to do it in the morning, on my couch, before my family, my dogs, and the rest of the world start demanding my time. It’s a small pocket of quiet I can actually keep.

The Real Reason People Hate the ‘Woo’

People do not dislike the ‘woo’ and its tools because it’s fake or overpriced. It’s because it can oftentimes be a mirror. If journaling helps, then you can’t pretend you don’t have feelings. If breath work helps, then you can’t keep calling anxiety “just stress”. If meditation helps, then you might have to admit that your mind is loud for a reason.

The ‘woo’ asks you to be present, and presence isn’t always easy or pretty. It can be brutally honest.

You don’t have to scurry out to buy crystals and incense (unless that’s part of your journey). You don’t have to “manifest” anything except maybe a nap. But, you do need a few short and sweet practices that bring you back to yourself and allow your brain and body to calm itself - even for a few minutes.

Call it woo if you want. I call it basic maintenance for a body that’s been running on caffeine, cortisol, and willpower.

And if two minutes of breathing keeps me from spiraling in the Kroger parking lot, then hand me my moon water and mind your business.

This wasn’t because I ran out of words or things to say. It’s because life got very heavy. It was one hard season on top of another. It was the kind of stretch where, despite how much you want to keep showing up and pushing forward, your body feels weighed down, and you can’t catch your breath. There are seasons in your life where you’re not just tired or overwhelmed; you are just constantly bracing for impact. You’re choosing what you can carry publicly and what you have to carry privately. It’s the absolute worst.

Something happened in my professional life that started as an honest mistake during a chaotic time. A mistake I took accountability for. A mistake that I immediately tried to correct and amend. I worked to make it right and did what you are supposed to do when you are responsible for an error. What came next wasn’t about accountability. It was an escalation in a system where power has the final word. Intention and evidence do not always matter as much as the narrative.

This isn’t me coming with excuses. I’m not trying to rewrite reality or dodge consequences. But I am also not going to pretend that what subsequently happened was proportionate or rooted in facts. There were personal losses I didn’t talk about. Stressors that were happening put my body in “fight or flight” mode. Even worse, there was a brutal lesson in loyalty by learning who stayed supportive when things got complicated, who disappeared overnight when life got messy, and who’ll share your troubles freely on social media without the whole story.

I started questioning the work I’ve loved and been good at for 15 years. This wasn’t because I suddenly lost my skill or my passion, but because when you take a hit, it messes with your sense of reality and your confidence. It makes you rethink everything you thought you knew about yourself. It makes you feel like you have to earn back what you already earned. Additionally, it shakes your trust in the fairness of structures and a system you’ve respected and realize that the process doesn’t always work the way it should.

I wish I could report that I’ve handled it all gracefully.

I didn’t.

I went quiet and turned inward (things that are against my very nature) because I didn’t think I deserved my outlets and small joys anymore. But in the real way: my heart full for people who checked on me without needing an explanation because they could tell something didn’t sound right about the situation. For the moments of steadiness returning, and the light I was sure was dimming, finding its way back. For the blessing of a healthy, happy family, because for a while, that wasn’t guaranteed.

So, I’m picking my life back up. Not to argue details, not to convince anyone of anything, and not to negotiate narratives. I’ve learned in the worst possible way that people who know me know me, and the rest can believe whatever they want. Because I can be accountable and still be treated unfairly. I can make a mistake and still deserve respect and dignity. I can be hurt and still refuse to be defined by someone else’s version of events (no matter their position). I am returning to what’s real: my work ethic, my faith in my own ability, my people, and my voice. From book club discussions to horror movie marathons, it was the kind of month that reminded me that routine can still be comforting and still give you a jump scare now and then.

What I Read

One of my favorite things to do in October is reread some of my favorite spooky books. This month, I reread The Haunting of Hill House while rewatching Mike Flanagan’s Netflix adaptation. The combination of Shirley Jackson’s psychological terror and Flanagan’s slow-burn grief hits every time.

For a quick thrill, The Surrogate Mother by Frieda McFadden scratched the itch. McFadden is always good for a palate cleanser read between heavier selections. I’m finishing out the month reading Bluebeard’s Castle by Anna Biller upon the recommendation of this term’s Lit Girl syllabus.

Not everything was haunted, though. My book club read Hood Feminism this month, and it was the kind of sharp nonfiction that truly runs you through all the emotions.

So yes, October was filled with horror. But for me, that’s not a theme; that’s a lifestyle - ha!

What I Watched

I went into The Substance without much context and came out… still processing. It’s one of those films that leaves you staring at the screen, wondering what exactly you just experienced. I genuinely don’t know what I think about it yet, but maybe that’s the point.

We started Welcome to Derry, HBO’s prequel series to Stephen King’s It. The pilot was excellent. It was moody, nostalgic, and perfectly unsettling. It feels like a return to form for horror television, and I’m already invested. The first episode is out and the next one will debut on Halloween.

Finally, my viewing lineup always includes at least one true-crime or social documentary, and this month it was The Perfect Neighbor on Netflix. The film unpacks the 2023 shooting death of Ajike “AJ” Owens in Ocala, Florida, who was killed by her neighbor, Susan Lorincz, after a long-simmering dispute. It’s a devastating look at how fear, prejudice, and self-defense laws collide in modern America. It was heartbreaking, but worth the watch. And if you’re hesitant about the time commitment, it’s just a single-part documentary.

What I Listened To

If October had a soundtrack, it was pure female power.

Thanks to my planned curriculum, I spent quite a bit of time this month with the autumn queen herself—Stevie Nicks. I focused mostly on her early work with Fleetwood Mac, but I’ll be continuing my deep dive through her solo catalog through the end of the year.

If you know me, you know this was a big music month. Two of my favorite artists both dropped new albums, and they did not miss.

In early October, Taylor Swift reminded us all what it means to be dramatic and deliberate with Life of a Showgirl. If you haven’t heard the 4 track opening run of “The Fate of Ophelia”, “Elizabeth Taylor”, “Opalite” and “Father Figure”, you are missing out. But, the whole album is a vibe.

To end the month, Brandi Carlisle released her new album Returning to Myself and all I can say is that it’s a spiritual experience from start to finish. I’ve had “Human”, “Church & State” and “No One Knows Us” on repeat.

It was a month of powerhouse women and unapologetic artistry and I am not mad about it.

But, music wasn’t the only thing in my ears this month. I discovered a new podcast that I have put into the rotation. I discovered More than A Muse in the Swiftie community as we were awaiting TLOAS to drop. I first found it through the Swiftie community while everyone was counting down to Life of a Showgirl. It’s a woman-centered, woman-driven show that celebrates creativity, influence, and legacy—the voices history tends to sideline.

The hosts cover everything from Season of the Witch: From Myth to Modern Feminism to deep dives into Dusty Springfield, Edith Head, and Judy Garland. With more than 250 episodes, there’s plenty to binge, especially on long drives or during Sunday resets.

What I Cooked and Ate

Ina Garten was the centerpiece of my kitchen curriculum this month. There’s something so grounding about rewatching old Barefoot Contessa while flipping through her cookbooks, sticky notes in hand. So far, I’ve cooked my way through several of her classics, with the most popular being her legendary Parmesan Chicken.

We took it a step further and turned that chicken into sandwiches with my homemade sourdough to make a Chicken Parmesan sandwich that could rival any restaurant, if I do say so myself.

I also found a great video on TikTok featuring Elizabeth Heiskell and her “redneck ragu”. I served it over fettuccini and it was a big hit! I kept coming back to it for leftovers/lunch. It will be a regular in the Martin household.

But I didn’t spend all my time in the kitchen. This month, I finally made it out to Hen & Egg, a new restaurant in downtown Jackson from local culinary genius Chef Nick Wallace. I cannot rave about this spot enough.

We went for brunch on our first visit. My husband and I both ordered the “Which Came First?” Chicken and Egg Sandwich (pictured below), but I couldn’t resist sneaking bites of the Black-Eyed Pea & Chicken Gumbo. . . and immediately ordered a bowl to go. We also split the Peach Cobbler Cinnamon Roll, and it was one of those melt-in-your-mouth, eyes-roll-back-in-your-head situations.

Five stars, no notes, and yes, I’ve already gone back for lunch with friends.

October Moments

October came with a mix of magic, music, and a little madness in between. McNeil and I kicked off October by celebrating Taylor’s Life of a Showgirl album release at the sing-along movie event, complete with the debut of her Fate of Ophelia music video. It was glitter, chaos, and pure joy in equal measure.

There was a slow Sunday at the Mississippi State Fair, where I ate something unnecessarily fried (as is tradition), claimed my free biscuit, and read my book in the beer garden while the kids tackled the rides—again, as is tradition.

The Mississippi Democratic Party hosted an event that reminded me why community matters. Former Senator Doug Jones joined us and spoke with the kind of grounded optimism that feels rare these days. It was a much-needed night of good words, good company, and a little renewed faith in the work ahead.

I made a trip to Tishomingo County to deliver my annual Halloween “boo box” to my niece and nephew which I’m convinced is my best work yet. We made sure to take in all the local Halloween decorations along the way.

There’s something about New Orleans in October that feels charmed. Maybe it’s the Halloween energy pulsing through every corner, or maybe it’s simply the rare stretch of weather that doesn’t feel like a sauna. I tagged along on a work trip with Drew, turned it into a mid-month getaway, and filled it with everything New Orleans does best—good food (Vessel and Cochon did not disappoint), a little haunting, and a lot of joy.

I closed out the month on a high note by speaking on a panel at the Women’s Foundation of Mississippi’s Thrive at Work event about intergenerational workplaces. I capped it off by touring my law school alma mater, newly renovated and a wonderful part of downtown Jackson.

October always teaches me the same lesson: life’s magic lives in the mix. Routine and surprise. Quiet mornings and loud nights. Horror movies and Sunday fairs. It’s never just one thing; it’s all of it, somehow working together. As the season turns, I’m keeping that rhythm: cozy chaos and all.

It’s not because of a new horror movie or creepy costume, but because of the country we’re living in. The monsters aren’t on the screen; they’re sitting behind microphones, drawing maps, and drafting laws.

The monsters come out early these days, and I’m not talking about the kind made of bedsheets and bad lighting. These are the kind with microphones, PAC money, and a knack for manufacturing panic. The fear this year feels amplified, fed by uncertainty, misinformation, and a flock of politicians more committed to keeping people afraid than keeping them fed, housed, or safe.

Every election season, it seems, the country turns into a haunted house built on fear. Politicians rattle chains about immigration, crime, “wokeness,” or whatever new specter polls well that week. They jump out from the dark, shouting about what’s coming to get us, and then, **POOF** they promise to protect us from the very nightmare they just invented.

It’s a performance so old we can recite the script by heart. It works because fear always does.

Fear as Political Currency

Fear operates like a drug. It heightens alertness, simplifies choices, and drives people toward those who claim they can bring them to safety. Authoritarian systems, in particular, thrive on it: the more anxious and uncertain people feel, the more willing they are to trade autonomy for order.

Fear and anger have measurable effects on democratic participation. They narrow focus, heighten loyalty, and encourage voters to favor showmanship over cooperative governance. When citizens believe the world is spinning out of control, they don’t want nuance; they want someone who will “fix it,” fast.

That dynamic isn’t limited to any one party, but it’s been sharpened to a fine point by those who’ve learned how to weaponize uncertainty. At a time when many people feel overwhelmed by headlines about government shutdowns, collapsing safety nets, and policy shifts, fear feels like common sense. It’s grounding, in a twisted way, it’s better to be angry than to feel helpless.

The formula is simple: make people afraid, then sell yourself as the only one who can make the fear stop. That’s not politics. That’s emotional blackmail.

A Haunted History

The politics of fear isn’t new. Throughout American history, fear has been a common instrument for consolidating power when the truth was too complicated or inconvenient to sell. Every era has its chosen monsters: “outsiders,” “agitators,” “radicals,” “criminals.” The pattern holds across time and geography. The names change, but the message doesn’t: they are coming for you.

During the Cold War, it was communists. During Reconstruction and the Civil Rights Movement, it was “outside agitators.” After 9/11, it was Muslims and immigrants. Now it’s drag queens, teachers, or whoever’s handy to stand in for the moral collapse of civilization. Fear doesn’t require evidence; just a good spin.

In the South, we know this playbook too well. Our politics has long relied on myths of threat and invasion: from Reconstruction-era white terror campaigns to modern laws designed to “protect” elections that aren’t actually under attack. In Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama, appeals to fear have justified everything from voter suppression to book bans to social service cuts. You can almost set your watch by it: when progress starts inching forward, someone shows up to remind us what might be lost if we let it keep moving.

The Machinery of Panic + Fear

Media, campaign consultants, and digital platforms all profit when voters are afraid. Outrage keeps people scrolling, sharing, donating, and tuning in. The algorithms that run our newsfeeds aren’t neutral. They’ve learned that fear sells faster than hope, because it feels more urgent.

Fear unravels complexity. It leaves no room for ambiguity, for the kind of slow, cooperative work democracy requires. That’s why it’s so effective. A population overwhelmed by emotion can’t stop to ask, “Is this true?” or “Who benefits from this panic?” It just reacts.

There’s a grim efficiency to that cycle. A leader stokes anxiety about a perceived threat. The public internalizes that anxiety, often shaped by repeated exposure. Then, in the fog of fear, policies get passed that hurt the very people being “protected.”

Keep the people afraid, and they’ll mistake control for safety.

Here’s the hard part: there is plenty to be afraid of. The fear isn’t entirely made up or misplaced. The fear feels real because, right now, it is.

It’s reasonable to fear a government that teeters on shutdown every few months, or an economy that leaves working families exhausted and insecure. It’s rational to worry about the dismantling of social safety nets and the rise of leaders who view compassion as weakness. It’s understandable to dread the growing sense that no one is steering this ship and that democracy has become a shouting match instead of a shared goal.

Those fears are legitimate. But they don’t justify turning on one another.

When fear is redirected away from the real problems, it becomes self-sustaining. It isolates people instead of organizing them. It’s the key advantage of fear as a strategy. Make people so busy living in fear and bickering amongst themselves that we forget to demand better from those in charge.

When Fear Replaces Vision

The most frightening thing about fear-based politics isn’t its volume. It’s the lack of originality, progress, and problem-solving skills.

It has no plan for the future. It creates unity through suspicion, not solidarity. It tells us to survive, not to thrive. Over time, it corrodes much more than institutions; it completely breaks down imagination. When we stop believing that something better is possible, we start accepting cruelty, decline, and indifference as inevitable.

The research is clear: democracies decline not only when authoritarian leaders rise, but when ordinary citizens stop believing truth matters. Fear accelerates decay. It’s easier to demonize opponents than to understand them, easier to panic than to participate.

The Antidote to Fear

Maybe the antidote to fear-based politics isn’t to suppress fear, but to redirect it toward something useful. To use it to be afraid for each other, not of each other, and turn that energy into vigilance instead of vengeance.

But that’s not glamorous and asks more of us than just leaning into fear. It means reading the full article instead of the headline. It means asking who truly benefits when you’re angry and scared, not just lashing out at the other side. It means switching up your news sources to give yourself perspective. It means listening before assuming the worst and choosing curiosity over certainty. These small acts of discernment won’t trend on social media, but they rebuild the civic muscles fear has atrophied.

The harder task is maintaining relationships with people we deeply disagree with. Division is the point, after all. We can’t assume everyone is working from the same set of information—but the only chance we have to combat fear together is to keep talking. Keep showing up. Keep countering panic with patience, logic, and rationality.

Fear has always been the cheapest kind of power—and the hardest habit to quit. It plays on our most primal instincts and feeds our darkest suspicions. It’s an easy emotion to grip when the world feels uncertain, but that doesn’t make it healthy—or productive.

Democracy depends on a different kind of faith: that people can disagree and still share a future. Facts have to matter more than feelings, even when feelings are loud. Every generation has to decide what to do with its monsters. Ours aren’t hiding in the dark corners—they’re out in the open, running for office.

The scariest part isn’t that they keep coming back.
It’s that we keep letting them.

They were the same keys her mother and grandmother had used to fill this small country church with music whenever the doors were open. Cicadas sounded a symphony outside. She knew that the heavy humidity would follow her all the way home.

She checked her quilted bag for her binder that held the prayer list, the shut-ins, the Sunday school schedule. Almost a manual for how this church runs. She reached for her own hymnal on the bench, worn and stuffed with notes. Under it, a folded slip of copier paper. In pencil, shaky but careful:

Amazing Grace — Harold D. Miller

No instructions. No please. Requests weren’t unusual, but not like this. Harold was a quiet, steady presence. He owned the plumbing company, offered his services, albeit begrudgingly, to the sick and elderly of the community for no charge. He wasn’t the sort to make a personal ask. And he wasn’t on any list that would have inspired someone else to do it for him.

She glanced through the sanctuary into the vestibule and out the glass doors into the Mississippi heat. Plenty of time. Evelyn knew the hymnal like the alphabet. She flipped to Amazing Grace (though she could play it in her sleep) and let memory carry her: verse one as written, the middle verse with a little gospel lean in the left hand, verse three in the high octave that she didn’t get to use much. A little practice before she fulfilled the request next Sunday.

Afterward, she closed the piano and walked the two blocks home to Laurel Street. She had just poured tea and plated two pecan cookies when her neighbor, Maybelle, shuffled across the grass.

“Evelyn? You hear? Harold Miller keeled over. Out in his yard just about an hour ago. Gone before the ambulance came.”

Before Evelyn could speak, Maybelle added, “Found out last month he had cancer. Doctor said six months. Maybe—Lord willing—this was a mercy.”

Evelyn said the right thing. “Dear Lord.” She promised prayers and pimento cheese for his wife and took it over in the morning. She gave a passing thought to how Harold wouldn’t hear Amazing Grace next Sunday.

The thought didn’t linger because Evelyn had things to do.

Helen was setting blue hydrangeas in a tall vase when Evelyn arrived on Thursday. As always, Evelyn set the quilted bag beside the bench and pulled out her hymnal. A folded white piece of paper lay on the seat.

“Helen, you leave a request?” she asked, unfolding it.

Helen shook her head. “Not me.”

It Is Well with My Soul — Janice Cobb

Janice was the church’s matriarch. If the doors were open, she sat second pew, left side. She left her Bible in the corner of that pew to save her the trouble of carrying it from her house. She chaired every committee and ran the potlucks like a drill sergeant until a stroke six months ago put her firmly on the shut-in list. Now, Pastor Avery visited her at home at least once a week; her name had become a permanent fixture on the prayer list. People whispered they missed her sweet potato casserole and her hugs.

Evelyn assumed the request came from Janice during the pastor’s last visit. She flipped to page 230 and played two steady verses while Helen clipped stems. An easy Sunday. She marked it and planned to include it early, reminding the pastor to announce it in Janice’s honor.

Sunday arrived with its usual flurry of activity. Evelyn arrived at the church early to work the soft pedal so it wouldn’t squeal. Helen’s hydrangeas glowed a soft blue against the white cloth on the table in front of the pulpit. Pastor Avery checked his mic three times and brushed off invisible lint.

In the vestibule, hands pressed into hands, shock whispered under all the kindness. Evelyn did what women like her do: promised deviled eggs and a lemon pound cake, squeezed shoulders, told stories with tears caught in the corner of her eyes. At home, she baked the cake and wrapped it in wax paper so the glaze wouldn’t lift. Maybelle called to ask about a drop-off schedule for the Cobbs. Evelyn drew lines and names on a legal pad until the week was filled with the care and comfort that Elder Creek provided its people when tragedy struck.

Tuesday came and the hydrangeas had given up. Helen swapped zinnias from her yard, loud and cheerful. “We need a lift in spirits,” she murmured. But, small towns are predictable in their resiliency. So, on Sundays, the church vestibule thrummed as it usually did. One day, Maybelle whispered that the baby that had been lost had a name now, “Grace,” as if naming the little soul could mend the silence its family now endured. Another Sunday, Carol from the post office pressed a recipe for funeral potatoes into Evelyn’s palm and offered to handle condolence cards if Evelyn took over casserole scheduling for the most recent community loss.

On Sunday, after the town had buried yet another of its own, Evelyn went back to the piano bench to gather her things. She no longer stayed after service to play the old hymns. Walking down Laurel Street, an ambitious breeze moved the trees even though it had no hope of cooling off the afternoon heat. As she approached her house, the front windows fogged at the corners, ensuring her the air conditioner inside was putting in the work. She went straight to the kitchen, set her bag down, and put the kettle on for tea to calm her nerves.

That would have to do. Her little ‘nip of whiskey’ was a habit she’d laid to rest years back.

She pulled the slip out of the binder in her bag and pressed it into her palm until the paper warmed.

“It’s a hymn,” she said to herself. “It’s only a hymn.”

Outside, down by Elder Creek, a train leaned on its horn. The sound slid through the slats of her blinds and echoed through the quiet kitchen. She needed something to do with her shaky hands. She made herself pick up the pencil from beside the phone. She wrote the week’s list of shut-ins in her loopy handwriting; beside each name was the casserole she intended to make or assign to another lady of the church. But when the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to rehear the case this fall, this case became something larger. Beneath the drawn lines and color-coded sections now sits a question about power, history, and memory: does this country still believe in the promise of equal representation, or has that ideal transformed into rhetoric?

The justices aren’t simply reviewing boundaries. They’re weighing whether the Voting Rights Act still has force behind its words and shields those that it was built to protect.

How We Got Here

For decades, Louisiana has been one of those states where population and power have not quite aligned. 1/3 of Louisianians are Black, but that reality has rarely shown up on the state’s political map. For most of modern history, only one of Louisiana’s 6 congressional districts has given Black voters a meaningful chance to elect a candidate who represents them.

After the 2022 midterms, a federal court finally called it what it was: a violation of the Voting Rights Act’s ban on racial vote dilution. In Robinson v. Ardoin, a 3-judge panel found that Louisiana’s map denied Black voters an equal opportunity to participate in the political process and ordered the legislature to draw a second majority-Black district. When the state resisted, the court’s ruling stood on appeal, and lawmakers were told to fix it.

So, in 2024, they passed legislation, adding a second majority-Black district that, for the first time, reflected the state’s population. It should’ve been the end of the fight. But, that would have been too easy.

Instead, a new set of plaintiffs (white voters from the district) sued again, claiming the legislature’s fix went too far. Their argument flipped the script: they said the very act of drawing a district that acknowledged race violated the Constitution’s Equal Protection Clause. In March 2025, a divided district court agreed, striking down the new map as a “racial gerrymander.” The state appealed, and the Supreme Court took the case, renaming it Louisiana v. Callais.

Then, in June, something extraordinary happened. The Court ordered the case to be reargued. This is a rare move that tended to signal the justices wanted to claw into something bigger. It became clear that this wasn’t just about Louisiana’s lines. It was about whether the very remedies Congress designed to confront racial inequality can endure in a nation that keeps declaring itself past the need for them.

So, What Happened?

This week, Janai Nelson, President and Director-Counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, came before the U.S. Supreme Court to defend Louisiana’s new congressional map. Her argument was simple and historic: that the 2024 map wasn’t a racial gerrymander; it was a long-overdue correction to one.

Inside the marble courtroom, the questioning started fast and sharp. The justices pushed at the same old fault lines that have haunted voting rights law for half a century: How long can race be used to remedy discrimination? When does acknowledgment become preference? And who gets to decide when a nation has “moved on”?

Justice Alito seemed to lead the skeptics, pressing on an explanation of whether any race-conscious map could ever satisfy the Constitution. Justice Thomas stayed quiet for much of the morning but leaned toward the idea that race-based considerations had “run their course.” Justice Barrett probed for a limiting principle, essentially asking how courts could know when the need for Section 2 remedies ends.

But the Court’s liberal wing came armed with history and a touch of sass. Justice Jackson reminded her colleagues that “colorblindness” was never part of the original promise of equality; the Reconstruction Amendments were drafted precisely because race had been used to exclude. Justice Kagan pushed the state’s challengers on how a map drawn under court order to fix a VRA violation could somehow become unconstitutional for doing exactly what the law required.

But in the end, the Court seemingly reframed the fight entirely: asking whether drawing a majority-Black district to comply with the Voting Rights Act could itself violate the Constitution.

It’s the kind of question that sounds abstract until you see what hangs on the answer.

Because if the answer is yes, then nearly every successful Voting Rights Act remedy from Alabama’s in Allen v. Milligan to Mississippi’s in Branch v. Smith could suddenly be on shaky ground.

What’s At Stake

This case isn’t just about Louisiana. It’s about whether the Voting Rights Act still has the power for which it was intended: to make sure the right to vote means more than just showing up at the polls.

Over the last decade, the VRA has been slowly, but steadily chipped away. First by Shelby County, then by Brnovich, leaving us with Section 2. This section allows voters to challenge maps and systems that weaken their voice and their vote. It’s one of the few tools that stand between communities of color and total political erasure. This last shred of advocacy is now at risk.

States and courts alike would be barred from considering race when repairing discriminatory maps, no matter how blatant the harm. Section 2 would essentially become a law that bans discrimination in theory but forbids anyone from naming it in practice.

The effects wouldn’t stop at Louisiana’s borders. They’d run straight through the South to the places where racially polarized voting still defines who holds power. It would mean fewer majority-Black or Latino districts, fewer candidates who come from the communities they represent, and more maps that look fair on paper while silencing people in real life.

In my reading, the best quote I found that can sum up what’s truly at stake is that “Callais is about more than maps—it’s about the future of a multiracial democracy.”

Why You Should Care

Maps decide power long before a single ballot is cast. This case could decide whether our democracy is willing to see race as part of its truth or keep pretending history no longer matters.

If the Court calls Louisiana’s fix unconstitutional, every legislature in the country will take note. States will hesitate before repairing any map that silences Black voters, knowing that even an attempt to comply with civil rights law could be turned against them. The Voting Rights Act now risks being weakened by the false belief that the fight for fair representation is finished.

District lines matter. They decide who gets to lead, and whether leadership truly reflects the people it serves. When the decision comes down, it will say something about the nation we’ve become and the one we’re still trying to be.

This fight didn’t begin in a courtroom. It began on a bridge in Selma, when ordinary people faced tear gas and batons for daring to claim what was already theirs: the right to vote. Their march carried them from the Edmund Pettus Bridge to Washington, where Congress passed the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

The VRA was born from blood and persistence. It took nearly a century after the 15th Amendment for the federal government to enforce what it had already promised. It took Reconstruction’s stolen rights, the terror of Jim Crow, the courage of Fannie Lou Hamer, and the prayers and bruises of those who refused to stand down, but instead stood on business.

And yet, 60 years later, we are watching that same law hollowed out piece by piece. Shelby County stripped away federal oversight. Brnovich made it harder to challenge discrimination. Now, Louisiana v. Callais threatens to undo what’s left by redefining the very act of protecting Black voters as a constitutional wrong.

That’s not just legal theory. It’s historical amnesia. It asks us to forget why the Voting Rights Act was needed in the first place.

The Court’s decision will say more than who gets a district. It will say whether this country still remembers its promises, and whether the march that began in Selma ever really ended. This was never just about Louisiana. It’s about whether the right to vote and equitable representation still belong to everyone.

In the South, hospitality isn’t a performance; it’s a reflex. You show up with a pie, a story, or just your tired self, and someone finds you a plate. The conversation winds through laughter, gossip, grief, and grace. It’s a kind of welcome that carries memory in it, a promise whispered through generations: there’s enough for everyone.

Lately, I’ve been thinking about how radical that promise really is in this world obsessed with borders between nations, neighbors, and even families, and how making room for someone else has become a quiet act of defiance. Hospitality, the real kind, is resistance to a culture that profits from our disconnection. It’s not politeness; it’s protest. It’s saying: I refuse to believe the lie that there’s not enough to go around.

Hospitality as Resistance?

Southerners know how to feed people. It’s an impulse to fill plates, to press leftovers into hands, to send someone home with a Tupperware of something warm. We don’t just cook; we care in the language of cast iron and hand-me-down recipes. There’s an intimacy in it, a quiet declaration: you belong here.

But somewhere along the way, that “radical” spirit of welcome started to shrink both here in the South and across our country. We’ve built fences where porches used to be. We argue about borders while forgetting that our grandmothers taught us to open the door before someone could knock. Watching ICE tear apart families, I can’t help but think: the South once prided itself on hospitality, yet we’ve forgotten how revolutionary it is to feed the stranger.

This is what hospitality really is. It isn’t about entertaining; it’s about extending. It’s the act of saying, “You belong here,” even when it’s easier, cheaper, or safer to close the door. The older I get, the more I see that hospitality has never been neutral. It’s a redistribution of what the world tries to withhold: warmth, dignity, belonging. It says, “I will share what I have, and I trust that it will be enough.” Sometimes that’s food. Sometimes it’s time. Sometimes it’s simply presence.

Radical welcome doesn’t ask whether someone deserves a seat. It asks whether you can live with the discomfort of sharing what you’d rather keep and still choose to do it anyway.

The Radical South We Could Be

Generosity as activism isn’t flashy. It rarely makes headlines or hashtags. It’s the grandmother sending food home in Tupperware after a funeral. The neighbor who leaves cold water on the porch for postal workers. The organizer who makes sure there’s a snack table at the voter registration drive. These small acts insist that community is built by hand, not policy alone.

We talk a lot about resistance in big terms (protests, lawsuits, campaigns) and those matter deeply. But hospitality is resistance, too. Every time you make someone feel seen in a system built to erase them, you’re disrupting the myth of scarcity. You’re saying, we are not competition; we are connected.

To host in the South is to declare abundance in the face of a history that tried to starve so many out. It’s a lineage of women and men who fed neighbors through hard times, who showed up with casseroles and cornbread when grief hollowed the room. That legacy isn’t quaint; it’s political. Feeding each other has always been how people survive injustice.

But, as many other Southern historical concepts, Southern hospitality isn’t as pure as the postcards make it seem. The concept itself grew out of contradiction: biblical ideals of neighborly love grafted onto a plantation economy built on stolen labor. Wealthy white planters used “hospitality” to describe their civility and generosity, even as the people serving the food had no freedom of their own.

Black Southerners transformed that same tradition into something real, something healing. They turned service into resistance, care into survival, and welcome into witness. The strength and resilience of Black women and men during and after that era redefined hospitality. The potluck, the Sunday spread, the funeral casserole all became sacred rituals of reclamation.

That’s the part worth saving. The South has long used hospitality as a kind of PR campaign, a way to charm outsiders into forgetting its wounds. But beneath the branding, there’s still a blueprint worth following. At its best, Southern hospitality is not about politeness; it’s about presence. It’s about gathering in a fractured world and saying, there is still room here, and there is still enough.

I’ve seen glimpses of that truth in real time: a church van hauling food and supplies to a flooded town, a front porch meal shared with someone who just got out of the hospital, a voter drive where the first table set up wasn’t for sign-in sheets but for snacks. That’s what the South still has to teach the rest of this country. Generosity and belonging can coexist with truth-telling, and welcome doesn’t erase the past but repairs what it broke.

Pass the Potatoes with a Side of Grace

Real hospitality was never about perfect tables; it was about shared ones. The ones with mismatched plates and folding chairs pulled in from the porch. The ones where someone brought store-bought rolls because life got busy and no one cared. True welcome is messy, sometimes inconvenient, and often uncomfortable. It asks us to move beyond transaction to give and receive without keeping score.

What we bring to the table, in the end, isn’t just food or comfort. It’s belief. Belief that there’s still enough to go around. That when we open our doors, our hands, our hearts, the world softens a little.

Hospitality and generosity could repair what politics keeps breaking. They build cooperation where suspicion festers. They strengthen community bonds and catch those most at risk of falling through: refugees, immigrants, the lonely, the sick, the newly grieving. When we welcome strangers, when we extend not just material help but genuine belonging, we remind ourselves of something America keeps forgetting: that compassion is infrastructure. It holds us together when everything else falls apart.

It’s easy to label that kind of generosity as naïve, to call it “radical” as though care is subversive. But it isn’t radical; it’s human. It’s the quiet courage of choosing kindness in a time that rewards cruelty. It’s the South at its best: stubbornly warm, feeding whoever shows up, trusting that love stretches.

The work ahead of us isn’t to shout each other down, but to set one more place.

Explaining why you said no.

Somewhere along the way, many of us learned that peace has to be proven and that if we don’t explain ourselves, we’ll be mistaken for selfish, ungrateful, or unkind.

I know this exhaustion well. I’m the eldest daughter. Natural born project manager, caretaker, professional plate-spinner. Anxiety is my constant background noise, and responsibility is the water I swim in. Achievement has always been my love language, and Type A doesn’t even begin to cover it. I like control. I like plans. I like things done right. But all that excellence comes with a cost.

Like most eldest daughters, I’ve mastered the art of saying yes, and when I finally manage to say no, I feel compelled to explain it six different ways. BUt, here’s what I am slowly learning in this season of life: freedom often begins where the explanations end.

Why Boundaries Feel So Hard

From the time we’re little, many of us are taught to cushion truth in context. We learn to smile while declining, to pad “no” with soft words, to make our boundaries palatable to others. This is especially true for women. Silence can feel dangerous, and clarity can feel cruel.

I am sure I am preaching to the choir when I paint the picture of being overwhelmed, stretched thin, just barely holding it together. The idea of setting a boundary feels impossible, like pulling a block from a Jenga tower. What if everything collapses? What if your career, relationship, insert-important-thing-here suffers? Boundaries can feel like this magical concept that only successfully happens in romantic comedies.

The truth is, boundaries are hard to set and harder to keep. They don’t fix things overnight. But, as someone who spends a lot of time (and dollars) on self-care, it is the most healthy and sustainable form of self-care you can give yourself. Sure, a bubble bath and a spa day are super nice and relaxing, but real self-care comes in the consistent, values-driven boundaries that protects your peace, extends your self-compassion, and reclaims your power.

Boundaries come at a cost. Saying no and setting limits are usually things that disappoint someone or fail to meet their expectations. That’s the price of honesty. You might feel guilt; others might show frustration or hurt. Setting a boundary also means you have to be ready to be uncomfortable until it becomes your new normal. Patience helps. Let others scramble to fill the gaps; you’ve done your share of scrambling before. If you manage others, they may be used to you solving their problems, but don’t rush back in to rescue. Coach instead. The cost is temporary. The payoff is long-term peace.

The Practice of Holding the Line

Learning not to explain yourself is its own quiet rebellion. Your first few attempts feel unnatural, like standing on stage with the microphone cut off. You send a short reply (“No, I won’t be able to”) and then you have to sit with it, that constant nag to provide more explanation for your assumed failure.

This is where the practice begins: noticing the urge to justify, and choosing restraint instead. You begin reserving explanations for the few who’ve earned them, the people who meet your boundaries with curiosity instead of defensiveness. Sometimes, you’ll still want to clarify, not out of guilt but care. That’s okay. The point isn’t to become hard; it’s to become discerning. Clarity isn’t cruelty. Silence can be a boundary too.

Boundaries are simply limits we identify for ourselves and apply through our actions or communication. They help us feel secure and steady, showing others how we wish to be treated. They are the quiet architecture of healthy relationships, the scaffolding that keeps connections from collapsing under imbalance.

Still, few of us were taught how to build that structure. Maybe you grew up in a home where saying yes was the safest option, or raised to equate goodness with availability and “no” feels like a betrayal. Boundaries are not walls. They’re doors with handles on your side. When you begin closing them with intention, life starts to feel more breathable, less performative.

As you practice, grounding your boundaries in your values makes them easier to hold. Values act like an internal compass, reminding you what actually matters when others’ expectations start to pull. Without that self-knowledge, it’s too easy to mistake someone else’s comfort for your responsibility. Taking time to identify what steadies you turns boundaries from reaction into alignment.

Over time, you start to see that boundaries aren’t about controlling others—they’re about clarifying yourself. They shift as you do. Some will tighten, some will soften. There will be mistakes, moments when you overcorrect, and times when you revert to old habits. But even in the mess, something steadier and healthier forms.

A life that fits you better.

Relationships that feel cleaner, less crowded.

A sense that you can finally trust your own no as much as your yes.

What Happens When You Stop Explaining
