Every builder eventually enters a season when the work is real, but the proof is missing.

You have sent the proposals, revised the plan, improved the product, learned new skills, made the calls, and published the work. Yet the opportunity has not arrived. The audience is not growing fast enough. The revenue does not reflect the effort. People acknowledge your potential, then choose someone else.

You are no longer sustained by the excitement of beginning, and you have not yet received the validation of arriving.

You are in the gap between vision and proof.

This may be the most difficult part of building anything because prolonged uncertainty eventually becomes personal. You stop questioning only the strategy and begin questioning yourself.

What if I am not early? What if I am simply wrong?

When effort does not produce evidence

Builders live between two realities: the world as it is and the world they believe could exist.

They see a company before it has customers, a book before it has readers, and a solution before others recognize the problem. That ability is a gift. It is also a burden.

When you are the only person who can see the destination, every setback becomes an argument against continuing.

This is where common advice falls short. “Never give up” sounds powerful, but persistence without reflection can keep you loyal to a path that is no longer serving you. Repeating the same actions while ignoring the results is not grit. It is rigidity.

Real grit is more demanding.

It requires you to protect the purpose while questioning the path.

The vision may still be right even if the strategy is not working. The destination may still matter even if the route must change. You can release a method without abandoning the mission.

What remains within your control

We are building during a period of extraordinary uncertainty. Industries are shifting. Technology is changing how work gets done. Careers that once felt dependable are becoming less predictable. People are being asked to reinvent themselves while carrying responsibilities that do not pause during reinvention.

In a season like this, outcomes cannot be your only anchor. Outcomes are shaped by timing, markets, gatekeepers, resources, and circumstances beyond your control.

Your response is different.

You can tell yourself the truth without turning it into a verdict. You can admit that something is not working without deciding that nothing will work. You can rest without surrendering. You can change direction without declaring the journey meaningless.

Most importantly, you can determine your next honest move.

Not the entire five-year plan. Not a perfect answer to every uncertainty. Just the next action that creates information, connection, opportunity, or momentum.

Ask yourself:

What are the results trying to teach me?

What am I continuing only because I have already invested in it?

What part of the vision still feels true?

What is one move I can make with the resources I have now?

Grit is not stubborn attachment to a particular plan. It is the ability to remain rooted in purpose while becoming flexible in practice.

The absence of proof does not mean that failure is final. It means you have reached the part of the journey where belief must become discernment.

You must decide what to preserve, what to release, and what to try next.

There is a particular kind of uncertainty that comes after doing everything you thought you were supposed to do.

You worked hard. You pursued the goal. Maybe you earned the title, built the company, made the money, or reached the milestone that once seemed so important.

Then you got there, and something still felt incomplete.

That tension sits at the center of my recent conversation with Suneet Bhatt, an entrepreneur, educator, executive, and author of the forthcoming Making Sense of Purpose. Over more than 25 years, Suneet has worked across startups, Fortune 500 companies, and nonprofits. Today, he teaches at Rutgers University and works with individuals and organizations around purpose, clarity, and forward movement.

His work raises a simple but uncomfortable question:

What happens when achievement is no longer enough?

We talk often here at Gritletter about perseverance, which I define as a continuous course of action in spite of difficulty. But perseverance alone does not tell us where to go. Sometimes continuing is courageous. Sometimes changing direction is wiser. And sometimes the hardest thing to admit is that the destination we have been pursuing was never really ours.

So I asked Suneet about success, purpose, uncertainty, and what it actually means to keep going.

When Success Doesn’t Feel Like Success

Gritletter: Many people spend years pursuing a goal only to reach it and discover that achievement does not feel the way they expected. Why does success sometimes fail to produce fulfillment, and what should someone pay attention to when that happens?

Suneet: The goals that fulfill us are the ones tied to what makes us and what matters to us. We often define success from the outside instead, by what looks like it.

I did that for a long time. Teams of three, then teams of a thousand. Fundraises, acquisitions, exits. By every external measure it was working. And a lot of it still felt empty.

So we reach the goal, we reckon with it, and we realize it wasn’t what we wanted in the first place. What I’d pay attention to is what happens next. Most of us don’t stop to reflect. We set a new goal. Bigger, or just different. And we make that choice in the exact moment we’re feeling the miss, the dissatisfaction. We make it from a place of scarcity, not clarity.

The move is to step out of that scarcity long enough to ask whether the goal was ever ours to begin with. That question is the whole thing, and it’s the one we skip.

Gritletter: That is an important place to begin. Our instinct after disappointment is often to accelerate. Suneet suggests doing something harder first: stop long enough to determine whether the destination still deserves the effort.

Which raises another question.

When Does Perseverance Become Stubbornness?

Gritletter: Gritletter defines perseverance as “a continuous course of action in spite of difficulty.” But perseverance can sometimes become stubbornness. How do you know when grit means continuing, when it means adapting, and when it means having the courage to let something go?

Suneet: Gritletter defines perseverance as a continuous course of action in spite of difficulty. I’d add one word. Intention.

When motivation drops, we tend toward one of two moves. We stop, and we arrive at regret. Or we grit our teeth and push, and we arrive at burnout.

Grit is worth something when we can see why we’re continuing.

That’s where self-awareness does the work. Sometimes it says keep going. Sometimes it says adapt the form but hold the throughline. Sometimes it says what mattered before doesn’t matter in the same way now, and letting go is the honest move.

Purpose evolves because we evolve. Continuing on purpose and continuing out of habit look identical from the outside. The difference is whether we chose it.

I don’t mind working hard. Extraordinary hours, in some cases. What matters more is how aligned we are about it, how intentional we are, and whether we sustain ourselves on our progress and our wins instead of our fears. Fear is a powerful motivator. It’s also an unsustainable one. That’s what tips grit into burnout.

Gritletter: One word changes the definition considerably: intention.

Perseverance becomes more than endurance when we understand why we are continuing. Without that clarity, persistence can become habit, fear, or burnout disguised as commitment.

Motion Is Not Always Progress

Gritletter: Many high achievers are conditioned to respond to uncertainty by working harder, achieving more, or starting something new. What have you learned about the difference between meaningful forward motion and activity that is really an attempt to outrun fear, disappointment, or a lack of clarity?

Suneet: It isn’t the pace that wears us down. It’s the disconnection.

We chase goals, keep routines, keep moving. When the motion is connected to what matters to us, it builds something. When it isn’t, it just burns fuel.

For builders this one is sharp, because starting the next thing can be the work we hide behind. It looks like progress. Sometimes it’s motion away from a fear we haven’t named.

A lot of that frantic motion comes from trying to control what we can’t. Getting clear and honest about what is ours to control, and what isn’t, is where the fear starts to lose its grip. We put our effort where we actually have a say, and we stop spending ourselves on the rest.

That’s why I care so much about progress over pace. Progress isn’t the thing that happens on the way to success. It’s the thing. And it doesn’t have to be big. I spend a lot of my teaching on footholds. How do we get started, how do we hold momentum through a setback, how do we move without burning out.

The real test is whether the movement is connected to something that matters.

There’s a bigger version of all this that I’m making the case for in a second book right now, Making the Case for Purpose. There’s a working draft if anyone wants it. For a long time we could hide behind the mechanical, repeatable work, the work that asked nothing human of us. That is exactly the work AI takes first. As it falls away, something is already waiting to fill the space it leaves. Distraction has never been more available, more engineered, or more within reach. And what remains is where purpose is built. The more the machine takes the mechanical, the more purpose becomes the work that is ours.

Gritletter: For builders especially, that distinction can be uncomfortable.

Creating another project, chasing another opportunity, or setting another goal can look like determination. Sometimes it is. Other times, activity gives us somewhere to hide from questions we would rather not answer.

Motion is easy to measure. Meaningful progress requires something harder: knowing why we are moving at all.

You Don’t Need Certainty

Gritletter: Faith, purpose, and uncertainty often exist together. How do you continue doing meaningful work when you cannot see the outcome, especially when there is little external evidence that your effort is leading anywhere?

Suneet: There is no 100 percent certainty. There never is.

So one of the most important distinctions in my work is this. The opposite of uncertainty isn’t certainty. It’s clarity.

We tend to think we need certainty before we can move. We don’t. We need enough clarity to take the next step.

Your readers already know how to keep building when they can’t see the outcome. What I’d offer is where the steadiness comes from. It’s clarity about who we are, what matters, and why this next step is worth taking.

In practice, this is a lot of the work I do with groups of executives. We reflect on progress, so we feel some momentum. We treat the stuck feeling as a plateau, not a dead end. None of it asks us to see the whole outcome.

Purpose isn’t something we chase. It’s something we get at through self-reflection, awareness, and experimentation. It’s a never-ending journey because it has to meet us where we are. Meaningful work doesn’t require knowing exactly where it leads. It requires enough clarity to take the step in front of us.

Gritletter: That may be the most important distinction in this conversation:

The opposite of uncertainty is not certainty. It is clarity.

We waste a lot of time waiting for certainty before we act. But certainty may never come. Clarity can show us the next meaningful step.

What If You’re Stuck?

Gritletter: If someone reading Gritletter feels stuck right now despite doing many of the “right” things, what is one question you would encourage them to ask themselves, and what is one concrete action they can take this week to begin moving with greater purpose?

Suneet: If we feel stuck, the first move is to look inward before we push harder or reach for a quick win.

Start by acknowledging it. We’re stuck. There’s no need to question it or judge it. The better question is what kind of stuck this is. I reframe stuck as a plateau, and no two plateaus are the same. Some are strategic. Some are for recovery. Some are for reflection. Some are protecting us through something hard. Naming which one we’re on shows us what the moment is actually asking of us.

Then the most powerful thing we can do, wholly within our control, is self-forgiveness. We carry so much guilt about being stuck. Setting it down empties the backpack and makes space for clarity, confidence, and forward movement.

That’s the work for this week. Name the plateau. Then finish one sentence, honestly. One small way I can begin to forgive myself is.

Once we’ve set that down, we move. And the move is small. I follow James Clear and Britt Frank here. Optimize for the starting line, not the finish line. Find the smallest thing we can say yes to that feels like progress. That’s the foothold, and it holds because we did the inner work first.

Gritletter: That reframing is useful because a plateau is not necessarily evidence that something has gone wrong.

Some seasons call for acceleration. Others call for recovery, reflection, or recalibration. The challenge is recognizing which season we are actually in before judging ourselves for not moving faster.

Keep Going, but Know Why

I started this conversation thinking grit meant continuing when the outcome is uncertain. I came away with a more precise definition.

Continuing is not always courageous. Changing direction is not quitting. Working harder does not always mean moving forward, and reaching a goal does not mean it was worth pursuing.

What matters is whether our effort remains connected to something that genuinely matters to us.

Maybe grit is more than a continuous course of action in spite of difficulty.

It is perseverance with intention. Knowing why we continue, even when continuing is difficult.

We cannot always know how an opportunity, career move, business, or idea will turn out.

We do not need certainty. We need enough clarity to recognize the next meaningful step and the courage to take it.

Over the past several days, I have been thinking a lot about what it actually means to keep building when the outcome is uncertain.

Not theoretically. Personally.

After more than two decades working in technology, I am still creating, learning, networking, applying, experimenting, and trying to make sense of what comes next. Some days I feel optimistic. Other days the path looks much darker. My back has been against the wall before, but this season has forced me to reconsider something I have believed for most of my life.

Maybe perseverance is not simply about doing more.

Maybe it is about learning where to direct your energy.

Earlier this month, I sat down for breakfast with my cousin, a licensed clinical social worker who recently opened her own practice. She began telling me about the difficulty of managing treatment plans, progress notes, follow-ups, documentation, and the daily workflow of seeing clients.

I told her, “I think I can build something for that.”

That conversation became a prototype. It is still early. It may become something significant, or it may simply teach us something useful.

But the opportunity did not arrive as a job posting, funding announcement, or perfectly packaged business opportunity.

It arrived through a conversation.

That same week, I discovered the website of a leading global startup community and found myself applying to exhibit and pitch at its 2027 conference. I met with an advisor about procuring government contracts. I participated in a small-business webinar about opportunities surrounding the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. I completed another vendor registration, adding to the procurement channels I had already established.

Meanwhile, I continued refining my consulting firm’s mission around helping organizations make more deliberate decisions about AI, cloud technology, and digital infrastructure.

And in another corner of my life, I announced that I will appear as a guest artist at Los Angeles Comic Con this fall through my multimedia brand.

At first glance, these things can look scattered.

Technology consulting. AI. Government contracting. A clinical application. Writing. Science fiction. Comic Con.

But I am beginning to see the thread.

Tech. Art. Culture.

More importantly, I am beginning to understand that not every seed has to become a tree immediately.

Some things are experiments. Some are relationships. Some are preparation. Some are lessons. Some will fail. A few may eventually change everything.

The challenge is remaining open enough to recognize which is which.

Yogananda writes in The Law of Success that we should choose something constructive and feasible, refuse to dwell on failure, and concentrate our abilities and opportunities toward a clear purpose.

That resonates with something else I have been thinking about recently: attention.

The questions we repeatedly ask ourselves matter.

There is a profound difference between asking:

Why does nothing ever work for me?

and asking:

What opportunity am I being prepared to recognize?

The first question searches for evidence of defeat.

The second searches for possibility.

Neither guarantees success. Positive thinking does not eliminate economic realities, unfairness, rejection, bad timing, corporate politics, or circumstances beyond our control.

But it can influence what we notice and what we do next.

My father understood something about that.

He passed away last year. The final text message he ever sent me was on April 16, 2025.

“Keep the faith.”

Those words have stayed with me.

Keep doing the work.

Use what you have been given.

But perhaps stop trying to control exactly when the harvest arrives.

I am still learning that last part.

Grit is not frantic motion. It is not launching something new every time we become afraid. It is not pretending everything is fine.

Sometimes grit is simply refusing to surrender your purpose while you cannot yet see the outcome.

So today, ask yourself one better question:

What opportunity might already be forming in front of me?

Write it down. Sit with it. Then take one constructive step toward the answer.

Keep building.

The outcome may still be uncertain.

Your next move does not have to be.

Until recently, most conversations about AI safety focused on what models might say. We worried about hallucinations, misinformation, and harmful outputs.

At the same time, the cost of deploying advanced models continues to fall, organizations are giving AI access to more systems, and lawmakers are beginning to establish clearer rules for how these technologies should operate.

Together, these developments point to a simple conclusion: the next era of AI will be shaped as much by boundaries as by intelligence.

When AI Treats Security Boundaries as Part of the Assignment

Anthropic disclosed that during internal cybersecurity evaluations, several Claude models gained unauthorized access to systems belonging to three organizations after a testing environment was mistakenly left connected to the public internet. The incidents were discovered during a retrospective review of more than 141,000 evaluation runs. According to Anthropic, the models relied on relatively common weaknesses such as exposed endpoints and weak credentials rather than sophisticated zero-day exploits.

These incidents occurred during controlled testing rather than real-world deployment, but they reinforce an important lesson. Highly capable AI systems are designed to accomplish objectives. When given open-ended tasks, they may treat security boundaries as problems to solve rather than rules to respect.

That does not make the models malicious. It means organizations can no longer rely on prompts or written policies as their primary safeguards.

Practical controls matter more than ever. Limiting permissions, isolating execution environments, rotating credentials, and requiring human approval for high-impact actions are quickly becoming essential design principles rather than optional best practices.

Security Is Becoming More Conversational

The cybersecurity industry is adapting to this new reality.

This week, Team Cymru introduced Pure Signal Command, a threat intelligence platform built around the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Instead of requiring analysts to manually search across multiple security tools, the platform allows both analysts and AI systems to retrieve structured threat intelligence through natural-language requests while keeping people involved in critical decisions. This reflects a broader shift toward AI systems that work alongside humans rather than replacing them outright.

As AI becomes part of operational infrastructure instead of remaining a standalone chatbot, governance becomes just as important as capability.

Cheaper Intelligence Changes the Equation

OpenAI also announced lower API pricing for portions of its GPT-5.6 family, reducing the cost of GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-5.6 Luna while leaving Sol pricing unchanged. The changes make advanced reasoning more affordable for developers building products and automated workflows.

Lower prices are good news for innovation.

They also mean that more organizations, startups, and independent developers will experiment with autonomous agents. As those systems gain access to files, business software, customer information, and financial workflows, strong architectural boundaries become increasingly important.

Making AI cheaper is only half the challenge.

Making it trustworthy is the other half.

The Rules Are Moving Closer to Home

Governance is also evolving outside the technology industry.

Massachusetts lawmakers recently advanced legislation addressing the use of AI in healthcare prior authorization, while California continues considering requirements that would increase transparency around copyrighted material used to train AI systems.

Regardless of how individual bills evolve, one trend is becoming clear.

AI governance is no longer being shaped only by federal agencies and international regulators. States are increasingly defining the practical rules organizations will need to follow.

For businesses operating across multiple regions, compliance is becoming an ongoing operational responsibility rather than an occasional legal review.

The Bottom Line

Today’s stories may appear unrelated.

One involves AI security testing. Another focuses on cybersecurity infrastructure. Another lowers the cost of advanced models. Another advances state legislation.

Together, they tell the same story.

AI is becoming more capable, more affordable, and more deeply integrated into the systems we rely on every day.

The organizations that benefit most from this shift will not necessarily be those using the most AI.

They will be the ones that establish the clearest boundaries around how AI is allowed to operate.

Technology becomes more valuable as it becomes more powerful.

It also becomes more dependent on the safeguards surrounding it.

The future of AI will be shaped not only by smarter models, but by wiser decisions about what those models are permitted to do.

According to CSO Online coverage of Oracle’s July 2026 update, the tech giant was forced to patch an unprecedented 1,449 security vulnerabilities in a single release, up from 309 a year earlier. In the same month, Microsoft disclosed 642 security bugs. AI is accelerating both flaw discovery and defensive patching, compressing response windows from weeks to minutes.

These specialized security agents are not trying to summarize documents or write poetry. They are trained to do one high-stakes job with brutal efficiency.

3. Models as National Geopolitical Assets

Beyond software engineering, frontier models have officially transitioned from commercial products to sovereign infrastructure. The White House recently accused Chinese startup Moonshot AI of conducting industrial-scale distillation attacks against Anthropic models and using foreign shell companies to bypass export controls on advanced hardware.

Whether these disputes trigger immediate trade sanctions or not, they highlight a broader truth: governments now view model architectures, compute clusters, and proprietary training datasets as matters of national security.

4. The End of Marketing Optimism

At the same time, regulatory oversight is catching up with commercial claims. The Federal Trade Commission is enforcing strict guidance against deceptive AI marketing. Companies claiming high accuracy, automated safety, or objective reasoning must back those statements with documented, reproducible testing. Unsubstantiated optimism is now a direct legal liability.

People do not expect AI to be perfect.

They want to know when an image is synthetic. When a decision has been verified. And when someone remains accountable if something goes wrong.

That expectation is quietly reshaping the AI industry.

Not through another breakthrough model or viral demo, but through the systems being built around the technology itself.

Three stories today illustrate that shift.

Start with the largest number in the news.

NVIDIA is reportedly in discussions to guarantee roughly $250 billion in financing to help support OpenAI’s planned data center campus in southern Ohio. Developed by SoftBank’s SB Energy, the project could exceed $500 billion when construction, infrastructure, and equipment are complete. The agreement has not been finalized or publicly confirmed by either company, but its scale alone is remarkable.

The story is bigger than the dollars.

NVIDIA would not simply be supplying chips. It would also be helping finance the infrastructure required to run them.

That marks a different phase of AI.

The conversation is no longer just about building smarter models. It is about building an industry that customers, investors, and governments believe will endure for decades.

The same shift is happening much closer to home.

Amazon now requires marketplace sellers to disclose when newly uploaded product images contain photorealistic people generated entirely by AI. Sellers provide metadata during upload, and shoppers may see a notice indicating that synthetic people appear in the listing. The requirement complements New York’s synthetic performer disclosure law, which took effect earlier this summer.

Consumers are not being asked to reject AI.

They are simply being given enough information to make an informed decision.

Then there is the engineering side.

Siemens and NVIDIA announced an expanded partnership to develop self-verifying AI agents for semiconductor and printed circuit board design. These systems can perform complex engineering tasks, but every critical decision is checked against deterministic, physics-based software before moving forward.

The AI is not trusted because it is intelligent.

It is trusted because it can prove its work.

That may be the most valuable lesson of the week.

Every team building AI should eventually ask the same question:

How does this system know when it might be wrong, and what prevents it from acting anyway?

If the answer depends only on the model getting it right, the design is incomplete.

Verification is becoming part of the product.

Transparency is becoming part of the experience.

Accountability is becoming part of the brand.

The organizations that embrace those principles early will have an advantage that cannot be measured by benchmark scores alone.

Technology may earn someone’s attention.

Trust is what earns the second visit.

• AI infrastructure is entering unfamiliar financial territory. NVIDIA’s proposed guarantee illustrates how suppliers, customers, investors, and infrastructure developers are becoming increasingly intertwined.

A few weeks ago, I found eight handwritten pages buried among some old documents.

My handwriting. My ambitions. Several of the fears I still carry today.

The man who completed them was me in October 2017.

The pages came from a life-coaching program I joined during a difficult professional period. Another work chapter was coming to an end, and I was once again confronting the fragility of relying on a job for my sense of security.

I had already learned that employment can disappear for reasons that have little to do with the quality of your work. Budgets shift. Leaders change. Contracts expire. Decisions are made behind closed doors. What appears to be solid ground can dissolve without warning.

I wanted to become more productive, more disciplined, and more capable of building something that belonged to me.

Around that time, a life coach reached out to me on LinkedIn. I was interested in her philosophy and ready to hear an outside perspective. Her services were expensive, but I committed to working with her for several months.

She gave me exercises, questions, and frameworks designed to help me examine my habits, goals, decisions, and emotional patterns.

Finding those documents again felt like opening a time capsule.

One exercise was a session planner. Another was called a Life Map. I was asked to plot the peaks and valleys of my past, extend the line into the future, and mark the milestones I expected to reach. There was also an exercise about letting go and a self-care assessment.

At the bottom of that assessment, I had calculated my score: 21 out of 42.

Underneath it, I wrote:

I am halfway there!

Nine years later, I am no longer sure where I believed “there” was.

The Future I Tried to Schedule

My future map was filled with dates, deadlines, and ambitious creative goals.

I planned to complete a book, develop another, write a screenplay, and build a larger story universe. I imagined that universe expanding into movies, comic books, video games, and merchandise.

One name was written clearly on the page:

LUCID.

Very little of it existed in a finished form. It lived in handwritten notes, voice recordings, partial manuscripts, and ideas I did not yet know how to organize.

In one session planner, I wrote that I was using voice recordings more often to brainstorm and edit my stories. My focus for the next session was improving my writing, storytelling, and character development.

That detail stayed with me because it remains part of how I work today.

I still speak ideas aloud before writing them down. I still capture thoughts before they disappear. I still use conversation to uncover connections that do not immediately appear on a blank page.

The tools have changed. The instinct has not.

I was already practicing the early behaviors of the creator I was trying to become.

In the years since, I published LUCID. I expanded its world, began developing its sequel, The Peregrine Nation, and created Lucid Futurism, a platform exploring storytelling, mythology, technology, history, and possible futures.

None of it happened according to the schedule I drew in 2017.

Some of it arrived years later. Some of it changed form. Some of it remains unfinished.

But the direction was real.

The deadlines were wrong. The identity beneath them was not.

A Missed Deadline Is Not a Dead Dream

We are often told to attach a date to every ambition.

A goal without a deadline is only a wish.

There is truth in that idea. Deadlines create urgency. They force decisions. They can transform a vague desire into something concrete enough to act upon.

But deadlines can also distort the way we judge our lives.

When a date passes without the expected result, we may assume the goal has failed. We forget to account for everything that happened between the day we made the plan and the day we expected to complete it.

A professional project operates within defined constraints. A human life does not.

I am a certified project manager. I know how to organize scope, schedules, costs, dependencies, resources, and risk. Those disciplines can bring order to extraordinarily complicated work.

But a life does not fit neatly into a project schedule.

Relationships change. People become ill. Parents die. Jobs disappear. Money runs short. Confidence rises and falls. Industries transform. Responsibilities emerge that we could not have anticipated.

New technologies appear and create opportunities that did not exist when the original plan was written.

Sometimes we simply change our minds.

Other times, the goal remains the same, but we need longer than expected to develop the knowledge, resources, confidence, or endurance required to carry it.

Structure helped preserve my vision. But rigid timelines sometimes convinced me that I was failing it.

Looking at those old pages, I could finally see the mistake.

I had confused a missed deadline with a dead dream.

They were never the same thing.

The Dreams Survived. So Did Some of the Wounds.

The pages that affected me most were not the ones containing my goals.

They were the pages containing the things I believed I needed to release.

I wrote about anger from feeling disrespected. Frustration when events did not unfold as I wanted. Guilt. Hopelessness. Stagnation. Harsh judgment of myself and others. The need to control outcomes. The feeling that I was not good enough.

I also wrote down two fears that can appear contradictory but often live beside each other:

Fear of failure.

Fear of success.

Reading the list again was uncomfortable because some of it still felt familiar.

I would like to say that several months of coaching permanently removed every fear, resentment, and destructive pattern. That would produce a cleaner story.

It would not be an honest one.

Dreams can survive for years. So can wounds.

The circumstances may change while the emotional response remains familiar. A new professional setback can awaken an old feeling of being overlooked. A rejection can reactivate the belief that someone else has the authority to determine the value of your work.

At one point, my coach told me that I was repeatedly positioning myself as a victim.

I strongly resisted that observation.

My response was direct: I had been victimized.

I had experienced unfairness, workplace politics, broken trust, bias, racism, and situations in which people attempted to undermine or misrepresent me. Calling real mistreatment by its name does not make it imaginary.

But I eventually understood that my coach was asking a different question.

She was not necessarily disputing whether the harm occurred. She was asking whether I was allowing that harm to become the central organizing principle of my identity.

Those are different questions.

You can tell the truth about being mistreated without surrendering your future to the people who mistreated you.

You can recognize injustice without pretending that every outcome was under your control.

You can also examine whether you continue entering similar environments, trusting similar people, dismissing similar warning signs, or responding in ways that repeatedly leave you in the same emotional position.

Examining your role does not excuse anyone else’s actions.

It restores your ability to make a different decision.

What Coaching Can and Cannot Do

Did coaching help me?

Yes, although not in the dramatic before-and-after manner often used to sell personal transformation.

My coach did not give me a new personality. She did not manufacture permanent motivation or remove uncertainty from my life.

She gave me a framework.

She asked questions I was not consistently asking myself. She identified patterns that were difficult to see from inside my own experience. She encouraged me to examine the assumptions beneath the stories I repeatedly told about my life.

That may be the greatest value of an outside perspective.

A coach can stand beyond the boundaries of your familiar narrative and point to the places where the plot keeps repeating.

But an outside perspective has limits.

A coach cannot want your future more than you do. A coach cannot perform your daily disciplines. A coach cannot make you write, build, apply, leave, forgive, begin again, or continue after the initial enthusiasm disappears.

External accountability can create movement.

Eventually, the deeper motivation has to come from within.

Even then, motivation is not one steady emotional state. Some days it feels like confidence. Some days it looks like curiosity. Occasionally it is anger redirected toward useful work.

Many days, motivation is simply the decision to continue without waiting to feel inspired.

Four Ways to Read an Old Goal

Revisiting my 2017 life map forced me to reconsider how I judge earlier ambitions.

An unfinished goal does not automatically belong in the category of failure. Neither does a goal that arrived late, changed form, or stopped mattering.

There are at least four ways to read it.

Completed

The goal happened substantially as you imagined it.

You earned the degree, published the book, launched the company, made the move, or reached the destination.

Count it.

It still matters if it arrived later than expected. It still counts if the experience felt less dramatic than the version you once pictured.

Transformed

The desire beneath the goal survived, but its form changed.

Perhaps you wanted to create in one medium and discovered that your abilities were better suited to another. Perhaps the business, audience, relationship, or definition of success evolved. Perhaps new tools made a different version of the original idea possible.

Recognize it.

The dream did not necessarily disappear. It adapted as you did.

Deferred

The goal still matters, but its original timeline or path no longer makes sense.

Deferred does not mean guaranteed. It also does not mean indefinitely postponed.

It means you have consciously decided that the goal still deserves a place in your future, even if the route, resources, or timetable must be reconsidered.

Recommit to it, or be honest about whether it still belongs there.

Released

The goal belonged to an earlier version of you.

Perhaps it came from family expectations, corporate culture, social pressure, or a desire to impress people whose opinions no longer carry the same weight.

Let it go.

Releasing a goal is not automatically failure. Continuing to pursue something that no longer holds meaning can consume years that might be invested in a life that fits who you are now.

The important question is not simply:

Did I accomplish it?

The better question is:

What does this goal mean to me now?

What I Failed to Count

An old life plan can become a weapon you use against yourself.

You can study what did not happen, compare it with the original deadline, and assemble a convincing case that you wasted time or fell behind.

But that same document can also reveal progress you have quietly stopped recognizing.

My 2017 map did not know what challenges I would survive, what relationships I would develop, what technologies would reshape my work, or how many times I would have to reconsider the meaning of security, success, and ownership.

It did not know how artificial intelligence would change the way I create and build.

It could not anticipate every platform, article, business idea, fictional character, professional setback, or moment of reinvention that would follow.

The map was not a prophecy.

It was evidence.

It showed what mattered to me before I had proof that I could create it.

It revealed which ideas were temporary interests and which ones continued returning, regardless of how often I postponed them.

It reminded me that the creative part of my identity was not a reaction to one difficult season. It had been developing for years, waiting for a larger place in my life.

Am I Still Halfway There?

In 2017, I looked at a score of 21 out of 42 and declared that I was halfway there.

The statement was hopeful. It was also based on the assumption that life has a fixed destination against which progress can be measured.

I no longer see it that way.

Every milestone creates a new horizon. Every accomplishment changes the person who originally wanted it. Every answer introduces another question.

I am not the same man who completed those worksheets in 2017, but I am not entirely separate from him.

I understand things he had not yet learned. I have faced losses and disappointments he could not have predicted. I have built meaningful parts of the future he imagined.

I am also still working through some of the same fundamental questions.

Some goals have been completed. Some transformed. Some remain deferred. Others no longer deserve a place in my future.

Maybe “halfway there” was never a temporary phase I was supposed to outgrow.

Maybe it is what it feels like to remain awake to your own life.

A life plan is not a contract.

It is an ongoing conversation between the person you were, the person you became, and the person you still have time to become.

Did that ambition fail?

Was it completed in a way you failed to count?

Did it transform into something your younger self could not have imagined?

Is it still waiting for your attention?

Over the past year, I’ve spent hundreds of hours studying AI.

Like most people, I started by asking the obvious questions.

Which model is best?

Which tools should I use?

What’s the next breakthrough?

Lately, though, I’ve realized I was asking the wrong questions.

This week brought another wave of AI announcements. Gartner projected that organizations will spend $64 billion on AI platforms and models this year. Open models continue getting better. Companies are simplifying complex AI systems instead of making them more complicated.

At first, those stories seemed unrelated.

Then a pattern emerged.

The conversation is shifting away from AI itself and toward something more practical.

Readiness.

The organizations creating real value are not necessarily using the newest models. They’re the ones with clear goals, reliable data, practical workflows, and leaders who know where AI actually fits.

That made me stop and think.

If every company eventually has access to similar AI tools, then the advantage isn’t the technology.

It’s knowing what problem you’re trying to solve before you start solving it.

As an entrepreneur, that’s a surprisingly uncomfortable realization.

It’s easy to chase the newest release. It’s much harder to evaluate whether your business is actually prepared to use it well.

I’ve started asking myself different questions.

Do I know where AI will save time?

Where could it introduce risk?

Are my processes clear enough to automate?

Would I trust the output without reviewing it?

Those questions have been far more valuable than comparing benchmark scores or debating which model is winning this month.

That mindset ultimately led me to build something I wished I’d had from the beginning.

Not another chatbot.

Not another AI productivity tool.

A structured way to think through AI readiness before making expensive decisions.

The next major breakthrough in artificial intelligence may not be a model that writes better reports, creates more realistic videos, or answers harder questions.

It may be the disappearance of the interface itself.

I recently participated in what was described only as a UX research focus group. Once inside, I was seated in front of a computer, with two cameras angled toward me from either side of the laptop and unfamiliar equipment fitted around my ears and neck.

Nobody identified the company behind the study or explained what it was developing.

The assignment was simple. Each time a phrase appeared on the screen, I read it three ways: aloud in my normal voice, in a whisper, and silently by moving my mouth without producing sound.

That sequence was the most revealing part.

Normal speech provides sound and visible articulation. Whispering preserves much of the movement and airflow of speech but eliminates the normal vocal-cord vibrations that produce an audible voice. Silently mouthing the words removes usable audio altogether while retaining many of the physical movements associated with speech, including lip, jaw, facial, and throat activity.

Recording the same phrases under all three conditions could allow researchers to compare what changes and what remains consistent across a person’s voice, facial movements, throat activity, and other physical signals.

I cannot confirm that this was the purpose of the experiment. But the setup closely resembles a rapidly developing area of research known as the silent speech interface.

Teaching computers to hear what was never spoken

Silent speech technology attempts to recognize intentionally articulated words without relying on ordinary audio.

Some systems analyze electrical activity from the muscles involved in speech. Others measure subtle movement or vibration around the face, ears, jaw, and throat. Machine-learning models are then trained to associate those signals with particular words or commands.

This is not mind reading.

A user still has to deliberately mouth a word or engage the muscles used to produce it. The technology is interpreting a physical act of communication, not extracting an unexpressed thought.

Even so, the research is further along than many people realize.

A 2025 study led by researchers at San Diego State University combined wearable electromyography (EMG) and electroencephalography (EEG) signals to recognize silently articulated sentences. The system reported accuracy above 95 percent for its predefined set of command phrases, highlighting the promise of silent speech recognition. However, the experiment was conducted under controlled conditions using a limited vocabulary, not a system capable of translating arbitrary silent speech.

In March 2026, researchers introduced SilentWear, a textile neckband containing 14 channels for measuring speech-related muscle activity. Its compact neural network recognized eight human-machine commands directly on the wearable device. Silent-speech accuracy averaged 77.5 percent during cross-validation but fell to 59.3 percent when tested across sessions, partly because repositioning the neckband changed the signals it captured.

That drop matters. A research prototype can work well when carefully positioned by technicians and still struggle when a consumer puts it on differently the next morning.

Another project, published in Nature Communications in January 2026, used a soft, sensor-equipped throat device to capture muscle vibrations and carotid pulse signals from stroke patients with dysarthria. Machine learning decoded speech-related signals, while large language model agents corrected errors and helped convert short inputs into more fluent, contextually appropriate sentences. Testing involved five stroke patients, so larger clinical studies will still be needed.

The larger story is not that machines can suddenly understand every unspoken sentence.

It is that researchers are gradually removing sound, keyboards, touchscreens, and other traditional requirements from human-computer interaction.

Where this matters first

Accessibility is the clearest application.

Someone who has lost fluent speech after a stroke, neurological illness, injury, or throat surgery could potentially communicate by silently articulating words that a wearable device converts into text or synthetic speech.

From there, the possibilities expand.

A surgeon could request information without looking away from a procedure. A firefighter could communicate through smoke, noise, and protective equipment. A factory worker could control machinery without shouting over it. Someone wearing augmented-reality glasses could silently ask an AI assistant for directions, translations, reminders, or background information.

The office could change too.

Imagine silently asking an AI assistant to retrieve a document during a meeting, summarize the discussion, or place a private reminder in your field of vision. Instead of visibly reaching for a phone or speaking to a chatbot, the interaction could happen through a subtle movement that nobody else notices.

Computers have already moved from rooms to desks, from desks to pockets, and from pockets to watches, vehicles, glasses, and clothing. The next step may be not merely smaller devices, but less visible interaction.

The interface could become part of the body.

The question behind the convenience

That future would require protections that are still being defined.

Facial movement, muscle activity, voice patterns, and physiological signals can be personally identifying. Depending on the sensors involved, they may also carry information beyond the command a user intended to give.

People will need to know what is being collected, how long it is retained, whether it is linked to their identity, and whether it can be reused to train other systems.

The central challenge will not only be teaching machines to understand silence.

It will be deciding when they are allowed to listen.

I still do not know what company ran the La Jolla session or what product may eventually emerge from it. It could have been accessibility research, wearable-device development, speech-model training, or an experiment that never reaches the market.

But the direction is becoming easier to see.

For decades, humans have learned to communicate on the computer’s terms through keyboards, buttons, menus, and commands.

Now computers are beginning to learn ours, even when no words can be heard.

For the past eleven months, I have been unemployed on paper. But that is not the full truth.

This year, I will return to Comic-Con as an invited guest. That may not pay the bills today, but it is a reminder that progress often arrives before recognition.

I also began developing the pilot episode for the LUCID series, and continue to lay the groundwork for the second book, The Peregrine Nation. Building a meaningful story universe takes time, but with each revision the vision becomes clearer and the foundation becomes stronger.

I also modernized Grit Letter. After acquiring the newsletter, I rebuilt its foundation, cleaned up the subscriber base, moved it to a more modern platform, and refocused it on resilience, AI, the future of work, and helping people navigate change. Today, it has grown to more than 1,000 engaged subscribers and continues to build momentum.

I have also been building CloudBait Navigator, an AI readiness and adoption platform. Being accepted into the NVIDIA Inception program reinforced my belief that the future belongs to those who are willing to learn, adapt, and keep building before the outcome is certain.

I am also taking an AI and Data Science class. While I continue looking for work, I am investing in new skills, learning Python and data science, and deepening the AI and technology expertise that will shape the next chapter of my career.

One of the lessons this season has reinforced is that progress does not always arrive in obvious ways. Sometimes it looks like a new skill, a stronger idea, a better draft, or a growing audience. Small steps may seem insignificant on their own, but over time they create momentum.

It has also challenged me to be more intentional about where I invest my time and energy. Not every opportunity deserves equal attention. Sometimes the real work is deciding what to focus on, what to improve, and what to build next.

One of the most valuable lessons from this season has been the importance of alignment. It is possible to stay busy all day and still feel scattered. Over time, I realized the goal was not to do more. It was to connect the dots.

That shift helped me bring together LUCID Futurism, Grit Letter, CloudBait Navigator, Hight Networks, my writing, my technology background, my AI education, and my experience as a project manager, strategist, creator, and builder.

The common thread is the future: how we work, how we create, how we adapt, and how we remain human in a rapidly changing world. The deeper work has not been finding more opportunities. It has been creating greater alignment between the ones already in front of me.

This year has tested me. It has humbled me and challenged many of my assumptions. But it has also reinforced something I have come to believe: circumstances may change, but purpose does not have to. The paycheck can stop. The title can disappear. The builder can remain.

Not every effort produces immediate results. But time spent learning, building, improving, and creating is rarely wasted. Those investments have a way of showing up later, often in ways you never expected.

I do not know exactly how this chapter ends. But I know that growth is still happening. I am learning, building, adapting, and preparing for what comes next. My goal is not simply to get through this season, but to turn it into infrastructure for the future.

For the past three years, most conversations about AI focused on the models.

SpaceX agreed to acquire Anysphere, the company behind the AI coding platform Cursor, in an all-stock deal valued at about $60 billion.

OpenAI expanded its Daybreak cybersecurity initiative and launched Patch the Planet, an effort to help open-source maintainers find and fix vulnerabilities in widely used software.

Micron announced a strategic agreement with Anthropic to support the memory and storage infrastructure behind future AI workloads.

The Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously advanced the NO FAKES Act, a bill designed to protect people from unauthorized AI replicas of their voice and likeness.

And Anthropic faced federal restrictions that forced it to limit access to some of its most advanced models.

Viewed individually, these look like separate stories.

Viewed together, they reveal something much larger.

The AI industry is becoming vertically integrated.

The companies positioning themselves for the next decade are not simply trying to build better models. They are competing for control of the infrastructure that makes those models possible.

That includes chips.

Memory.

Data centers.

Developer tools.

Cybersecurity systems.

Energy.

Identity protections.

And increasingly, regulatory access.

For the past few years, AI has felt like an open field.

Companies launched pilots. Teams tested copilots. Developers played with agents. Leaders asked the same question over and over: what can we automate, accelerate, or replace?

That phase is not over. But it is no longer the main story.

The next phase of AI is about control. Not control in the sense of limiting progress. Control in the sense of building the structures that keep powerful systems useful, accountable, secure, and economically sustainable.

That distinction matters more than it sounds.

AI is no longer just a tool that produces content or answers questions. It is moving into operating systems, enterprise workflows, healthcare networks, legal contracts, cybersecurity programs, procurement systems, and the hardware sitting on your desk. When technology burrows that deep into institutions, freedom gives way to structure. It happens every time with every major technology, and AI is no exception.

A few signals this week point in the same direction.

Start with the legal battle in Colorado. Back in April, Elon Musk’s xAI sued Colorado in federal court to block the state’s AI law, arguing it was unconstitutionally vague and violated free speech protections by forcing the company to alter how Grok is trained and what it says. The Department of Justice then took the unusual step of intervening on xAI’s side, marking one of the first major clashes between state-level AI regulation and federal priorities.

The xAI case is bigger than one company or one state. It is a preview of the next several years. AI regulation is not arriving as one clean national rulebook. It is arriving through courts, federal agencies, individual states, contracts, and sector-specific mandates, often colliding with each other along the way.

For organizations, that means compliance can no longer be treated as a static checklist. The rulebook may change by state, industry, and use case, sometimes within the same year.

At the same time, Microsoft is pushing AI deeper into the machine itself. At Build 2026, the company’s message shifted from adding AI features to applications toward making Windows a platform for running and managing AI agents. New capabilities include on-device AI execution, local processing, and Microsoft Execution Containers designed to isolate agent activity and limit access to sensitive resources.

That last detail is worth sitting with.

Microsoft is not just adding AI features. It is building the cage around them before letting them loose on your files.

In the old model, AI lived somewhere in the cloud.

In the new model, it runs closer to the user, closer to the device, and closer to the workflow.

That changes the cost structure. It changes the security model. It changes what IT teams need to monitor. And it changes who has leverage.

Same effort. Completely different experience.

Here’s where most people get it wrong.

They want credit for the grind. They want people to know how much went into it. They want to prove they’ve earned it.

That instinct is natural.

It also works against you.

When you show all the struggle, people focus on the struggle. They start questioning the result instead of trusting it.

The moment shifts.

This doesn’t mean pretending.

It means being intentional.

Do the work deeply.
Then present it in a way that feels clean, controlled, and complete.

You don’t need to walk people through every step.
You don’t need to prove how hard it was.

You need to make the outcome stand on its own.

When something feels easy, people assume you’re in control.
When it feels smooth, they assume you can do more.

That’s where trust comes from.

Not from effort.
From how the result lands.

The work is hard.

Your job is to make it look easy.

AI is the most disruptive technology since the internet.

People feel it.

In their work. In their roles. In that quiet sense that something is shifting beneath their feet and they are not sure where to stand.

Some jobs are disappearing. Others are being reshaped into something harder to define and harder to hold onto.

This is happening.

And the conversation keeps splitting in two directions.

One side says AI will replace everything. The other says it is overblown, a convenient excuse for decisions companies already wanted to make.

Both are partially right. Neither gets to the root of it.

Because the real shift is not just in the technology. It is in how people respond to it.

When Tim Cook announced his leadership transition, it did not feel reactive. It felt measured. Deliberate. The kind of move that signals strategy, not panic.

Elevating someone like John Ternus was not scrambling to keep up. It was a step into the next phase.

Most people are not doing that.

AI can generate language. It can structure ideas, assist with execution, and mimic competence well enough to close the gap on most surface-level skills.

When the surface gets commoditized, what remains is the foundation.

That foundation is character. Not in an abstract sense. In a practical one.

Integrity. Consistency. The ability to operate clearly when there is no script.

There is a moment in the book where Covey describes how two people can experience the exact same situation and walk away with completely different interpretations. Not because one is right and the other is wrong. Because they are operating from different internal maps.

If you have ever lived through that, you know how real it is.

The disagreement is not about facts. It is about perception. And perception drives every decision that follows.

Most people trying to navigate this moment are doing it with an old map. They are working harder. Moving faster. Trying to stay positive. But if the underlying model is off, all that effort just gets them to the wrong place faster.

Covey put it plainly. A map is not the territory. If you have the wrong map, effort does not fix it. It amplifies the mistake.

This is what makes this moment different.

It is not just a shift in tools. It is a shift in what actually creates value.

For years, secondary traits carried people. Charm. Communication. Positioning. The ability to make things look right. Covey called that secondary greatness. It works for a while. Under real pressure, it does not hold.

Primary greatness holds. That is character.

That is what people trust when things are uncertain. That is what organizations rely on when the path is not clear. That is what allows someone to create real value without being handed a roadmap.

AI is accelerating the divide. Not between people who use it and people who do not. Between people built on technique and people built on principle.

The advantage is moving away from those who know how to present value toward those who know how to create it consistently.

Most people will keep trying to keep up. A few will get clear.

That difference will define who actually benefits from what comes next.

Start there. Not with the tool. With the lens.

Builders live in a kind of dual reality.

One foot has to stay planted in what is real: time, money, health, relationships.

The other foot reaches toward what could be: vision, belief, a future that most people cannot yet see.

This tension is not a defect. It is the responsibility that comes with building something meaningful.

When it is held well, it creates momentum. When it is ignored, it quietly drains you.

I have been feeling that strain lately.

I have been building in more than one direction. Each path is legitimate. Each matters. Each carries its own promise. But without clear boundaries, even meaningful work can begin to compete with itself.

I have been busy. I have shipped work. I have published consistently. And despite all of that, meaningful engagement has been limited, followed almost immediately by offers to sell more visibility.

Not because anything was broken, but because attention has an entire economy built around selling the appearance of progress.

That is where many builders get stuck.

You stay in motion, but the work stops stacking. Effort increases, but traction stays flat. You are doing a lot, yet moving very little.

The story of Tony Hsieh resonates because it shows an extreme version of this same tension.

He could see what others could not. He believed deeply in culture, community, happiness, and meaning. He built something enduring at the company level. Then he tried to carry that same vision into a much larger and messier environment.

When cracks appeared, he did not step back. He pushed harder.

That is the caution. Not as a tragedy, but as a pattern.

When the world does not respond the way we hoped, it is tempting to force momentum instead of reexamining direction. We optimize. We spend. We chase the next lever. We stay productive, but we lose presence.

The answer is not to abandon vision.

It is to support vision with structure.

That is why the Builder’s Clarity System matters. It keeps ambition grounded so effort can finally compound. The system has five parts.

1) Name the game you are playing this season

Builders confuse missions.

You can build a product, build a platform, build an audience, and build a life. But you cannot do all four at full intensity at the same time.

2) Choose the one outcome that makes the season real

This is where builders mature.

Not by adding more goals, but by choosing the one outcome that forces alignment.

One offer. One pipeline. One cadence. One channel. One product milestone.

If you cannot name it, you cannot compound it.

3) Build guardrails that protect you from your own intensity

This is the part nobody wants to write down.

A builder can be labeled antisocial because focus can turn into withdrawal. Vision can turn into control. Control can turn into isolation.

Guardrails look like:

A non negotiable health routine.

Relationship time that does not get canceled for work.

One person who can tell you the truth without losing access to you.

A weekly reflection focused on direction, not just output.

4) Resist the urge to engineer community

You can create a container for people, but you cannot force belonging.

Community is earned through trust, repetition, and care. Not through money, speed, or performance.

If you want real traction, you have to become consistent enough that people can find you again.

5) Convert the next week into proof

Proof is the antidote to despair.

One conversation. One sale. One honest response from a reader. One demo booked. One piece published. One collaboration started.

Momentum is rarely a leap. It is a series of small proofs stacked quietly over time.

They substitute myths for principles. They confuse confidence with competence. They mistake titles for authority and motion for progress. When pressure arrives, those illusions collapse.

This is why expertise often fails when it matters most. Knowledge without grounding becomes performance. Credentials without clarity become noise. The illusion of expertise is not harmless. It is expensive.

The most dangerous opponents rarely look dangerous

Another recurring lesson was that the most dangerous people in business are not the obvious villains. They are often well intentioned. Polite. Reasonable.

They mean well, but they operate without clarity.

They hide behind process instead of confronting reality.
In high pressure environments, this kind of softness becomes treacherous.

For a long time, I believed competence would protect me.

I believed that each problem solved earned trust, and that experience, education, judgment, and rising compensation would gradually quiet the chaos around me.

That is not what happened.

On paper, my career looked stable.

I was often hired after things had already gone wrong.

At one point, my body reacted before my intellect could rationalize what was happening.

I remember sitting in meetings, outwardly professional, inwardly under a level of stress I had never experienced before. Not because the work was hard, but because the environment was corrosive. Information did not flow. Respect was not mutual. Accountability was uneven.

That was the first real signal that something deeper was wrong.

The issue was not performance.
It was the system I kept agreeing to enter.

The Thirty-Year Realization

When my last contract ended almost exactly thirty years after I completed my undergraduate education, the symmetry forced a reckoning.

I had done everything I was supposed to do. Learn more. Lead better. Be adaptable. Stay professional. Push through.

Yet the disrespect persisted. The instability persisted. Only the stakes increased.

That was when I could no longer ignore the pattern. These experiences were not random. They were systemic.
