The local Joy Cinema runs a program called “Weird Wednesdays,” a special screening series dedicated to oddities, midnight movies, and cult classics like Ed Wood’s Glen or Glenda. To me, though, Weird Wednesdays is less about mere camp and more about cinema that feels truly eccentric by modern standards. Having worked in animation for over thirty years, I’ve developed a keen eye for visual oddities, a perspective first shaped back in Aspen where my friends’ moms founded the Aspen Film fest. Growing up around that festival exposed me early on to indie trailblazers like Bill Plympton and his kinetic short Your Face, Joan Gratz’s clay-painted masterpiece Creation, and Joanna Priestley’s haunting Voices. Looking through that seasoned independent lens, there is one modern animated feature I feel compelled to bring into the light: Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson’s Anomalisa. It has some of the creep of Jan Svankmajer’s Lunch Food but a bit more commercial. Their are two art friends that I would like to see this film with and hear their responses. Folks in Portland know Scot Campbell as Extream-O the Clown and Ex-PNCA graduate John Madden both have the kind of laughs that are contagious and would probably elevate audience response.

I was fortunate enough to catch its premiere at the Palm Theater during the Telluride Film Festival, and it was immediately obvious that this picture is destined for cult status. The hallmark of a true cult film is often a profound, serious core delivered through a delightfully off-kilter design, and Anomalisa fits that bill precisely. At its heart, the movie is a haunting exploration of existential loneliness and acute psychological detachment, specifically, the Fregoli delusion. If you don’t catch on within the first four minutes that almost every voice in the protagonist’s world is being spoken by the exact same actor, this movie simply isn’t going to be for you. It lays its cards on the table early and demands that you lean into its unsettling, singular wavelength.

What makes the film so visually arresting is how it embraces its uncanny aesthetic. The puppets look almost human, yet they are deliberately distorted just enough to remind you that you are watching an animated illusion. Rather than hiding the seams of the physical stop-motion process, the directors leave the replacement faceplates fully visible, creating a delicate horizontal line across each character’s brow and a mesmerizing, subtle flicker between facial expressions. The movement carries the surreal, hypnotic weight of Jim Blashfield’s iconic cutout work on Paul Simon’s Boy in the Bubble or the video for Suspicious Circumstances, blended with the fluid realism of Bakshi’s American Pop. The characters move with such haunting precision that you have to laugh at the sheer absurdity of watching these tiny, beautifully flawed figures navigate a painfully ordinary world.

Subconsciously, I think that juxtaposition is the entire point: it forces us to laugh at ourselves while the relentless chaos of existence comes barreling at us. We each inhabit our own private echo chamber, viewing reality through a deeply personal lens, shaped by whatever baggage and unique perspectives we bring to the table. When you remember that this story springs from the mind of Charlie Kaufman, the very man who penned Being John Malkovich and wrote himself into Adaptation, you know you are stepping into a narrative landscape where the strange is standard currency.

As someone preparing to launch a Kickstarter project of my own, it was also immensely gratifying to spot the backer credits at the end, recognizing that Anomalisa made history as one of the very first crowd-funded, studio-released animated features.

Although it didn’t walk away with the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, Anomalisa will go down in history as a true cult classic. It is a film that ultimately says far more about the people who are too guarded to laugh at their own human frailties than those who are free enough to acknowledge just how absurd life can be. And that, as I see it from my seat in the theater, is the quiet brilliance of cinema.

There is a dark, foul stench wafting out of the Department of Justice, a sulfuric reek of high-level legal overreach that ought to make every honest citizen in this country grab their pitchforks. Down in the marble corridors of power, Todd Blanche and his bureaucrat brigade are playing a dangerous, highly speculative game of political football with settled law. Ghislaine Maxwell was tried, convicted, and sentenced to twenty long years in a federal cage by a jury of her peers and a sworn officer of the court. That is supposed to be the end of the line, the final, iron-clad verdict of a civilization bound by the rule of law. But now, we are forced to watch top-ranking federal officials march down to prison cells for private, backroom closed-door summits, treating a convicted child sex trafficker like a protected state asset rather than a caged predator who helped tear innocent lives to shreds.

Make no mistake: no DOJ hack, no matter how much executive juice they claim to squeeze, has the constitutional authority to bypass, undermine, or rewrite settled judicial verdicts. The Department of Justice is meant to be an enforcement arm, not an appellate court of ultimate backroom favors, and certainly not a personal favor bank for the wealthy and connected. When political appointees start cutting back-channel deals, dangling comfortable prison camp transfers, and whispering about administrative leniency to an inmate who actively aided in the systematic abuse of young women, they aren’t just overreaching, they are driving a monster truck right over the front steps of the Supreme Court. It is an absolute, unmitigated assault on the integrity of our judicial system.

This is precisely where Congress needs to quit its grandstanding, stop writing polite letters, and drag the DOJ into a federal courtroom. It is time for Capitol Hill to sue Todd Blanche and the Justice Department for blatant executive overreach and breach of duty. The legislative branch was built specifically to check the arrogant hallucinations of an out-of-control executive apparatus. If Congress refuses to draw a line in the sand right here, then the entire concept of equal justice under the law is nothing more than a cruel joke we tell ourselves to sleep at night. Lady Justice is standing out on the street, blindfold ripped off, scale broken, while political power brokers barter away the hard-won justice owed to surviving victims.

We desperately need our legal system to stand for something solid before the whole house of cards collapses under the weight of its own cynicism. The constituent victims who dragged themselves through the living hell of that trial to secure a guilty verdict deserve a government that defends them, not a Justice Department that entertains the delusions of their abusers. Congress must take a stand, grab the legal reins, and force the executive branch back into its constitutional cage. If the law doesn’t apply equally to the monstrous elite, then it doesn’t apply to anyone, and that is a wild, lawless territory where none of us want to live.

When the machinery of state power begins to run amok, the worst thing a citizen can do is sit quietly on the sidelines nursing a silent rage, you have to make yourself an absolute, persistent nuisance to the people who hold the levers of power. Pick up the phone, write the letters, and hound your congressional representatives until their staff knows your name by heart, demanding that they exercise real legislative oversight, subpoena the closed-door transcripts, and cut off funding to executive overreach. Support the independent investigative journalists and advocacy organizations who are relentlessly dragging these dark room dealings into the daylight, and use every town hall, digital platform, and local ballot to remind these elected politicians that their jobs depend on protecting constituent victims rather than shielding the connected elite. The legal system only degenerates into a private club for the powerful when the public loses its appetite for a fight; so stay loud, demand total transparency, and never let them forget who they actually work for.

Thompson, operating on a level of magnificent, unpredictable chaos that proved life is far too absurd to ever be taken seriously.

Years later, down in the old, rainy artist days of Portland, the weather might have been gray, but the local comedy landscape was painted in absolute technicolor. You couldn’t walk down the street without bumping into pop icons who completely defied the ordinary. There was the legendary Darcelle, wrapping the city in sequins, razor-sharp wit, and unparalleled glamour, proving that a good laugh is best served with a side of rhinestone audacity. You had Tom Peterson, beaming out of every television screen with a wake-up haircut and a deadpan, friendly charm that was so uniquely unpolished it became an instant local joke. Growing up in Aspen, I learned that the measure of success was never just what you built, it was what you gave back. I watched people like John Denver use their success to create conversations that reached beyond music, bringing together dreamers, conservationists, business leaders, and neighbors through the Windstar Foundation. People like Ted Turner understood that the land beneath our feet wasn’t simply an asset on a balance sheet. It was part of a promise to future generations. They invested in wildlife migration, open spaces, and communities because they believed prosperity carried with it a responsibility to protect what made America worth loving.

Today, I find myself wondering if this is another one of those moments when true leadership is being called upon. Strong companies don’t just answer to shareholders, they earn the trust of the employees and customers who often turn out to be the very same people. Lasting businesses understand that healthy communities create healthy markets, and that investing in people is not charity; it’s good stewardship. The choices made by today’s business leaders will help determine whether they leave behind stronger communities or deeper divisions. Looking back on my own life, I realize how fortunate I was to grow up surrounded by voices that challenged people to think differently. Maybe that’s why I found myself drawn to the Flaming Justice project. Creativity has always been one of the great bridges between generations. Just as Stranger Things reminds audiences what made the storytelling of the 1980s so timeless, I believe today’s artists, filmmakers, musicians, and writers have an opportunity to create stories that connect grandparents with grandchildren and neighbors with strangers. We need fewer walls and more campfires. We need songs, films, books, and conversations that remind us we belong to one another before we belong to any political tribe. Sometimes a story can accomplish what an argument never could.

When I look back at everything that has grown from Growing Up Aspen – Adventures of the Unsupervised, I keep coming back to one simple lesson: if you stay curious, stay hopeful, and keep your eyes open, life has a remarkable way of revealing the next path. Aspen taught me that because the world came to our little mountain town, bringing extraordinary people with extraordinary ideas. My hope is that more people with the means to make a difference, whether business leaders, artists, philanthropists, or everyday citizens, choose to lift others up instead of pulling them apart. America has always found its greatest strength when generous hearts, creative minds, and determined communities come together in service of something larger than themselves.

Some movies arrive as entertainment. Others arrive as conversations with the moment in which we live. Disclosure Day feels like the latter. Watching it through the eyes of an old Aspen mall rat, I couldn’t help but place it within a long tradition of films that ask us to look beyond what we think we know. Aspen’s ISIS Theater was where I first saw Close Encounters of the Third Kind, which invited audiences to wonder whether we were alone in the universe. Then came E.T., which reminded us that fear of the unknown is often overcome through empathy and connection. Now comes Disclosure Day, a film that asks not only what we believe, but how we react when our assumptions about the world are challenged.

The movie’s connections to my own life appeared in unexpected ways. Wyatt Russell stars in the film, and Aspen’s small-town web of connections immediately came to mind. One of my schoolmates spent several summers nannying for Kurt and Goldie. When my father stepped away from his advisory role at the Aspen Community School, Goldie Hawn stepped in. That’s Aspen for you, a place where world-famous actors, local kids, ski bums, entrepreneurs, and dreamers often occupy the same orbit. The town has always been a crossroads where seemingly unrelated lives intersect in ways that only make sense years later. Wyatt did a great job at a new play on Richard Dreyfuss’s Close Encounters in Steven Spielberg’s new film Disclosure Day.

Films also have a curious way of attaching themselves to our personal memories. I’ve long admired Colin Firth, and I still remember the premier screening of The King’s Speech at the Telluride Film Festival in The Palm Theater. The memory has nothing to do with this film itself, yet the two remain permanently linked in my mind. Movies become landmarks in our lives, tied to moments, friendships, and experiences that extend far beyond the screen. They remind us that storytelling is never just about what happens to the characters, it is also about what happens to us while we are watching.

Watching Disclosure Day, I was reminded of how every generation creates stories to explain uncertainty. Sometimes those stories take the form of science fiction. Sometimes they take the form of satire. I’ve often joked that Hollywood executives may have borrowed a little inspiration from people I knew growing up. Creating unforgettable characters like Spicoli of Fast Times at Ridgemont High, from their winter or summer vacations in Aspen.

What makes Disclosure Day resonate today is not simply its subject matter but its underlying question: how do communities respond when confronted with uncertainty? Whether the challenge is technological change, political division, environmental pressures, or new ideas that disrupt old assumptions, survival depends less on having all the answers and more on maintaining our ability to work together. The film serves as a reminder that communities are built on trust, curiosity, and shared purpose. In the months and years ahead, those qualities may prove far more valuable than certainty itself. Like the best science fiction, Disclosure Day is ultimately not about the future. It is about who we are right now and who we choose to become together.
