You don’t have to agree with each other to talk about what matters and you don’t have to be a political expert to make a difference.

Labor Day is one of those three-day weekends when we get to slow down.

Maybe you’re firing up the grill, heading to the beach, or simply enjoying an extra day off of work.

And honestly? We all need that break.

But Labor Day is not just the unofficial end of summer, it’s about working people and what they care about.

The people who build our communities, teach our children, grow our food, and keep our country moving.

And many of the things those people care about like wages, healthcare, housing, education, and the cost of living are shaped by decisions made by elected officials.

Start With What People Actually Care About

Political conversations often go sideways when we start with political parties instead of people. Instead, start with everyday life.

Ask:

• How are you doing with the cost of groceries?

• How are gas prices affecting you?

• Is housing getting harder to afford?

You may discover that someone who votes differently from you is worried about many of the same things. You may simply disagree about how to solve them.

That’s okay. That’s democracy.

Listen. No. Really Listen.

One of the most powerful things you can do in a political conversation is also one of the hardest:

To listen.

Not pretending to listen while preparing your rebuttal or scrolling through your mental list of why they’re wrong. Listen to understand.

If someone says something you disagree with, try asking a follow up question. Or simply say, “tell me more.”

You’re not trying to change their mind. You’re simply trying to understand their POV.

Talk About the Issues That Matter to You

Labor Day gives us a natural opening to talk about issues affecting working people.

Maybe you care about wages or you’re worried about healthcare costs. Maybe you’re concerned about education or you’re wondering whether if your kids will ever be able to afford a house.

Whatever it is, talk about it.

Invite Someone to Participate

If you care about an issue, don’t keep that passion to yourself. Talk about it and tell someone why it matters to you.

Then ask what matters to them and invite them to do something about it. That could mean:

• Registering to vote.

• Researching a ballot measure.

• Attending a candidate forum.

The goal isn’t to recruit someone to your side, it is to get more people involved.

Make It Personal

One of the easiest ways to encourage someone to participate is to explain why you participate.

Maybe you want your community to be more affordable or you are concerned about healthcare or the future of public education. Tell them why then ask:

“What matters most to you?”

Turning a political argument into a conversation.

Don’t Forget the Young People at the Cookout

If there’s a young voter sitting at your table, don’t lecture them.

Ask them questions. “What issues matter to you?” “Do you know what’s going to be on your ballot?” “Have you figured out how you’re going to vote?”

If they have questions, help them find reliable information. Show them how to check their registration, find their sample ballot, research candidates and ballot measures, and understand their voting options.

Then let them make their own decisions. We’re not trying to tell them who to vote for but to give them resources to decide for themselves and who understand that their voice matters.

Turn a Conversation Into an Invitation

The best civic conversation doesn't necessarily end with, "did I convince you?" but with "Want to look into it together?"

Invite someone to research a candidate, read a bill or attend a town hall. Remember, you’re not telling someone what to believe. You’re inviting them to participate.

This Labor Day, enjoy your three-day weekend.

But if you care about an issue, don’t just complain about it. Talk about it. Learn about it. And invite someone to join you in doing something about it.

Because democracy isn’t something we watch from the sidelines. It’s something we do together.

This is a setback, not the end of the fight.

If the Supreme Court decision made you angry, worried, or wondering whether there's any point in fighting back, take a deep breath.

This is not the end of the story.

On August 24, the Supreme Court gave the Trump administration an interim victory in its fight to implement parts of its executive order concerning mail-in voting. But the Court did not rule that the executive order is constitutional. It did not settle the broader legal battle. And another federal court order continues to block at least part of the administration’s plan.

That distinction matters.

The headlines may say Trump “won.”

But a procedural victory is not the same thing as a final victory.

The fight continues.

And that means voters should stay informed, stay engaged, and most importantly, not give up.

So, What Actually Happened?

Executive Order 14399 in March, directing federal agencies to pursue significant changes involving federal elections and mail ballots.

Several states and other organizations challenged the order in court, arguing that the president does not have the authority to impose any changes to election administration through an executive order.

A federal judge in Massachusetts blocked key provisions of the order from being implemented for the November election.

The Trump administration demanded that the Supreme Court intervene.

On August 24, the Supreme Court, by a 6–3 vote, put that particular injunction on hold. That allows the administration to move forward with certain steps while the litigation continues.

That is a real setback but it is important to understand what the Court didn’t do.

The Supreme Court Did NOT Declare the Executive Order Constitutional

This is probably the most important thing for voters to understand.

The Supreme Court did not issue a final ruling saying:

“The president has the constitutional authority to change these election rules.”

Instead, the majority focused on the procedural posture of the case and whether the states had demonstrated the kind of sufficiently imminent injury necessary to justify the injunction at that point in the litigation.

In other words:

The Court opened one door. It did not decide where the entire legal road ends.

The underlying constitutional questions remain.

And There's Another Important Detail

Today’s ruling did not wipe away every court order blocking the administration’s election plans.

A separate ruling by the same Massachusetts judge continues to prohibit the Postal Service from implementing at least one provision of the executive order nationwide.

That means the legal landscape is still complicated and it may change again.

There are still lawsuits.

There are still court orders.

There are still constitutional questions.

And there are still opportunities for those challenges to be heard.

What Is Trump's Executive Order Trying to Change?

The Executive Order directs federal agencies to pursue changes involving federal election administration.

Among other things, it directs:

• The Department of Homeland Security to create state citizenship lists.

• The Justice Department to prioritize investigations and prosecutions involving the distribution of federal ballots to people deemed ineligible.

• The Postal Service to pursue new rules involving mail-ballot procedures, including ballot-envelope requirements and tracking mechanisms.

The order itself is an internal directive to executive-branch agencies. It does not simply rewrite every state’s election law overnight.

That distinction is important because much of election administration remains governed by state law and by Congress’s constitutional authority over federal elections.

Why Is This a Constitutional Fight?

At the heart of the dispute is a basic question about American democracy:

Who gets to decide how federal elections are conducted?

The Constitution gives states an important role in administering congressional elections while also giving Congress authority to alter those rules.

The challengers argue that the president cannot impose new election requirements through an executive order.

The administration argues that the federal government has authority to take certain actions concerning federal elections and election integrity.

That creates a significant separation-of-powers question involving:

• The president

• Congress

• State governments

• Federal agencies

• The courts

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, joined by other dissenting justices, argued that the Constitution does not give the president independent authority to make these kinds of changes to election administration.

But again, the majority did not resolve that constitutional question.

Why Does the Timing Matter?

Because we’re running out of time.

The midterm election is 70 days away.

States are already preparing ballots, training election workers, communicating with voters, and establishing procedures for processing mail ballots.

And in many states, mail voting isn’t some obscure alternative.

In 2024, about 30% of American voters cast their ballots by mail. In California, the figure was more than 80%.

That means changes to mail voting aren’t theoretical.

They could affect millions of people.

The elderly.

People with disabilities.

Military and overseas voters.

Rural voters.

College students.

People who work long or unpredictable hours.

Parents who can’t easily get to a polling place.

For many Americans, voting by mail isn’t about convenience.

It’s how they vote.

What Does This Mean for You?

Today’s decision does not mean you suddenly can’t vote by mail.

Don’t assume your state’s voting rules have changed because of today’s headlines.

Your state and local election officials remain the best source of information about how you can vote.

Instead:

Check your registration.

Make sure your voter registration information is current.

Know your state’s rules.

Check your state’s official election website for information about mail voting, deadlines, ballot requests, and ballot return procedures.

Watch for official notices.

If the rules affecting your state change, election officials should provide information about what voters need to do.

Make a voting plan.

Know whether you’ll vote by mail, vote early, or vote in person.

And don’t wait until the last minute.

Don't Let This Decision Convince You That Nothing You Do Matters

It’s easy to look at a Supreme Court decision and think:

“What difference does my voice make?”

Please don’t.

The people we elect to Congress will help determine whether election laws are changed, challenged, funded, investigated, or protected.

The people we elect at the state level help administer elections.

The people we elect to the presidency appoint judges and executive officials.

And citizens have the right to organize, speak out, volunteer, vote, challenge government actions in court, and demand accountability.

Democracy has never been about winning every battle.

It’s about continuing to participate after you lose one.

The Guardrails Bottom Line

Trump received an interim victory today. But don’t mistake an interim victory for the end of the fight.

The Supreme Court did not declare Executive Order 14399 constitutional.

The Court did not give the president unlimited authority over election administration.

The Court did not eliminate every legal challenge to the administration’s plans.

And at least one separate court order continues to block part of the administration’s mail-ballot plan.

So what should voters do?

Don’t panic.

Don’t assume.

Don’t disengage.

Verify.

Make your voting plan. Follow official information from your state and local election officials. Pay attention to what happens next in the courts and in Congress.

What Would It Mean to End ICE—and What Would Come Next?

Few words in America’s immigration debate generate as much emotion as “abolish ICE.” Just yesterday, Hakeem Jeffries refused to commit to abolishing ICE, which has sparked heated debate.

For some, “abolish ICE“represents a demand to end a system that has caused unnecessary suffering, separated families, and failed to provide adequate protections for people in government custody.

For others, abolishing ICE raises a very different question:

If ICE disappeared tomorrow, who would enforce immigration laws?

And what would happen to the federal investigations targeting crimes like human trafficking, drug smuggling, and transnational organized crime?

These are difficult questions, and they deserve more than just slogans.

This conversation has become even more urgent as immigration detention has expanded under the Trump administration. According to the Government Accountability Office, ICE’s average daily detained population increased 71%, from 39,314 people on January 20, 2025, to 67,204 on April 1, 2026.

Behind all those numbers are human beings. Parents anxiously waiting to hear from children. People separated from spouses. Children separated from parents, and many trying to understand a legal system that is not familiar to them. Families wondering whether the person they love will ever come home.

What Is ICE?

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement was created in 2003 as part of the post-9/11 restructuring of federal agencies.

ICE is not the same agency as Border Patrol.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is primarily responsible for border security and inspections at ports of entry.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) handles immigration benefits and applications, including naturalization and certain immigration petitions.

ICE primarily operates inside the United States.

And it actually has two very different missions.

1. Homeland Security Investigations

Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) investigates serious transnational crimes, including:

• Human trafficking

• Drug smuggling

• Money laundering

• Cybercrime

• Child exploitation

• Intellectual property crimes

• Transnational organized crime

2. Enforcement and Removal Operations

Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) handles interior immigration enforcement, including:

• Arresting people subject to immigration enforcement

• Detaining people during immigration proceedings

• Carrying out removals

• Managing detention and alternatives-to-detention programs

(This is the part of ICE that most Americans think about when they hear the agency’s name.)

Why Do Many Americans Want ICE Abolished?

For many abolition supporters, this is about what is happening to people inside the system.

They point to immigration detention without due process, conditions inside facilities, use of government power, access to legal representation, and the impact enforcement can have on families and communities.

Immigration Detention

Immigration proceedings are generally civil rather than criminal.

Critics argue that people involved in civil immigration proceedings should not routinely experience incarceration-like conditions, particularly when alternatives to detention may be available.

And for the person sitting behind a detention-center door, the distinction between “civil detention” and “criminal incarceration” can feel very theoretical.

They’re still separated from their families.

They’re still unable to freely leave.

They’re still waiting for someone else to decide what happens next.

Conditions of Confinement

This is where government oversight becomes particularly important.

A June 2026 GAO investigation into Camp East Montana, ICE’s largest detention facility at the time, found serious problems with planning and oversight. The facility opened without meeting some key detention standards, including perimeter security cameras, outdoor recreation space, and space for attorney and family visitation. GAO also identified gaps in medical services, unsanitary conditions, and other safety concerns.

GAO also found that ICE’s average daily detained population had increased dramatically.

These aren’t just numbers on a government spreadsheet.

They represent people living inside those facilities.

People who need medical care.

People who need to speak with their lawyers.

People who need to see their families.

People who deserve to be treated with respect regardless of how their immigration case ultimately ends.

In other words, oversight matters.

A government agency exercising extraordinary power over people’s lives should be held to an extraordinary standard of accountability.

What Would Happen If Congress Abolished ICE?

Abolishing a federal agency wouldn’t make immigration law disappear.

Congress would have to answer some very practical and very human questions.

What Happens to ICE Employees?

Would employees:

• Transfer to another agency?

• Move to a newly created immigration agency?

• Continue working in criminal investigations?

• Be reassigned to other federal positions?

• Lose their jobs?

What Happens to People Currently Detained?

This may be one of the most important questions.

If ICE disappeared, what would happen to the people currently being held?

Would they be released?

Would they be transferred?

Would alternatives to detention become the norm?

Would another agency take responsibility for detention?

Abolishing an agency does not automatically resolve the legal cases of the people in its custody.

Those people would still need answers.

What Happens to Deportation Cases?

Existing immigration cases would not simply vanish.

People with pending cases would still need a legal process.

People with final removal orders would still require a government agency to determine how those orders are carried out.

Congress would need to establish who has that responsibility.

What Happens to Detention Facilities?

The government would also have to deal with:

• Federal facilities

• Private contracts

• State and local detention agreements

• Medical providers

• Transportation

• Food services

• Facility employees

• Existing contracts and obligations

This is why “abolish ICE” is not the end of the conversation.

It’s the beginning of a much larger one.

What About Homeland Security Investigations?

HSI investigates crimes that do not disappear simply because ICE does.

Human trafficking will still exist.

Drug trafficking will still exist.

Child exploitation will still exist.

Cybercrime will still exist.

Transnational organized crime will still exist.

If Congress abolishes ICE, it would need to decide where those investigative responsibilities go.

They could remain together in a new agency.

They could be transferred to another federal law-enforcement agency.

Or Congress could divide the responsibilities among multiple agencies.

Abolishing an agency doesn’t mean abolishing the problems that agency was created to address.

Could ICE Be Reformed Instead?

Maybe.

Congress could restructure the agency while fundamentally changing how immigration enforcement works.

Possible reforms could include:

Reduce Reliance on Detention

Expand alternatives to detention and reserve detention for circumstances where it is genuinely necessary.

Strengthen Standards

Require enforceable standards for:

• Medical care

• Mental-health care

• Food

• Sanitation

• Safety

• Legal access

• Family visitation

• Grievance procedures

Increase Independent Oversight

Inspections shouldn’t simply identify problems after people have already been placed in a facility.

Oversight should help prevent those problems from happening in the first place.

GAO specifically recommended that ICE develop controls ensuring new facilities are properly inspected and meet applicable detention standards before housing detained people.

Improve Transparency

Americans should be able to understand:

• Who is being arrested?

• Why people are being detained

• How long people remain in custody

• Where people are being held

• How often force is used

• Deaths in custody

• Complaints

• Inspection findings

• Disciplinary actions

Transparency isn’t an obstacle to enforcement.

It is how the public knows whether enforcement is being done responsibly.

What Can We Do?

You don’t have to be an immigration attorney or policy expert to participate in this conversation.

You can:

• Learn.
  Read independent oversight findings. Look beyond political talking points.

• Ask questions.
  Contact your senators and representative. Ask what they believe immigration enforcement should look like and what safeguards should protect people in government custody.

• Pay attention to Congress.
  Watch immigration legislation, appropriations, oversight hearings, investigations, and votes.

• Listen to people affected by the system.
  Policy discussions should be centered around the people they affect, remembering that they have families, fears, hopes, and futures.

• Vote.
  Immigration policy is ultimately shaped by the people we elect to make and oversee our laws.

The Bottom Line

Whether you believe ICE should be abolished or dramatically reformed, one principle should not be controversial: America can insist that people in government custody are treated with dignity.

The question isn’t whether ICE should exist.

The deeper question is what kind of immigration enforcement we are willing to accept in our name.

Because behind every arrest, every detention number, every deportation order, and every government policy is a person.

Every time you ask ChatGPT a question, stream a movie, save a photo to the cloud, or use an AI tool, thousands of computers go to work in buildings you’ve probably never seen.

Those buildings are called data centers.

They’re quickly becoming one of the most important, and least understood, pieces of modern infrastructure.

Communities across America are being asked to welcome these facilities with promises of jobs, tax revenue, and economic growth.

But residents are also asking important questions.

Will there be enough water?

Will the electric grid handle the demand?

Who pays for new infrastructure?

And what happens if today’s “one project” becomes twenty?

This isn’t an argument for or against data centers.

It’s about making sure communities have the information they need before making decisions that could shape their future for decades.

What Exactly Is a Data Center?

Imagine a warehouse.

Now imagine that instead of storing boxes, it’s filled wall-to-wall with thousands of computers running 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Those computers power much of the internet.

They store your family photos.

They process online banking transactions.

They help businesses operate.

Increasingly, they’re also powering artificial intelligence.

Inside a typical data center are:

• Thousands of computer servers

• Massive storage systems

• High-speed networking equipment

• Backup generators

• Security systems

• Cooling equipment

All of those computers create one unavoidable problem:

Heat.

Just like when your laptop gets warm after heavy use, imagine thousands of powerful computers running nonstop.

Without cooling, they would quickly overheat.

Why Does AI Change Everything?

Data centers have existed for decades.

Artificial intelligence is changing the scale.

Training AI models requires enormous computing power.

That means more servers.

More servers create more heat.

More heat requires more cooling.

More cooling often means more electricity, and sometimes much more water.

That’s why technology companies are investing billions of dollars in building new facilities across the country.

Why Do Data Centers Use Water?

Here’s something many people don’t realize.

Data centers don’t use water because computers need water.

They use water because computers generate heat.

Think of the radiator in your car.

Its job isn’t to make the engine run.

Its job is to keep the engine from overheating.

Many data centers work the same way.

Some cooling systems use water that evaporates into the air.

Others continuously circulate the same water through a closed system.

New AI facilities are increasingly using liquid cooling because today’s AI chips generate far more heat than traditional computer servers.

Why Should You Care?

Most Americans will never step inside a data center.

But nearly everyone could feel their impact.

A new facility might mean:

• Increased demand for local water

• New power lines

• Electrical grid upgrades

• Construction traffic

• Continuous noise from cooling systems

• More tax revenue

• New jobs

The question isn’t whether data centers are good or bad.

The question is whether your community understands the tradeoffs before deciding.

It’s Not Just About One Data Center

One of the biggest mistakes communities can make is evaluating each project in isolation.

One facility may have little impact.

Five facilities could dramatically increase demand for water and electricity.

That’s why residents should ask not only:

“How much water will this project use?”

but also:

“What happens if ten more are approved?”

Growth rarely happens one building at a time.

The Most Important Question

Perhaps the most important thing to understand is this:

The same data center could be perfectly appropriate in one community and completely inappropriate in another.

A region with abundant water, existing electrical infrastructure, and industrial land may barely notice its impact.

A drought-prone community with aging infrastructure could face a very different future.

Location matters.

Planning matters.

Transparency matters.

Before Your Community Decides…

Every resident deserves answers to some basic questions.

Not because data centers are inherently bad.

But because good decisions require good information.

Ask:

• How much water will it use?

• Where will that water come from?

• What happens during a drought?

• Who pays for new power lines?

• Will my utility bills increase?

• How many permanent jobs will be created?

• What tax incentives are being offered?

• Has an independent environmental review been completed?

• How will nearby neighborhoods be affected?

• What happens if actual water or electricity use exceeds projections?

If those questions can’t be answered clearly, communities have every reason to ask for more information before moving forward.

The Bottom Line

Artificial intelligence is here and growing.

That change requires physical infrastructure; buildings, electricity, water, roads, and land.

Data centers are becoming as essential to the 21st century as highways and power plants were to the 20th.

The question isn’t whether they’ll be built.

The question is whether they’re built thoughtfully, transparently, and in partnership with the communities that will live near them.

Because the decisions made today won’t just shape technology.

They’ll shape neighborhoods, natural resources, utility bills, and the quality of life for generations to come.

Following the Money

Every election season, Americans are bombarded with campaign ads, text messages, glossy mailers, social media videos, and fundraising appeals. It can feel overwhelming, and looks expensive.

Have you ever wondered who is paying for all of it?

Campaign money doesn’t just keep candidates’ lights on. It shapes which voices are amplified, which issues dominate the conversation, and which candidates have the resources to reach millions of voters.

Following the money isn’t about assuming corruption or questioning every donation. It’s about understanding who is investing in a campaign, why they may be doing so, and how you can separate facts from political messaging.

An informed voter doesn’t just ask “Who am I voting for?”

They also ask, “Who is helping pay to get them elected?”

Why Campaign Money Matters

Money doesn’t cast ballots; people do.

But money influences nearly everything that happens before Election Day.

Campaigns use fundraising to buy television and digital advertising, hire staff, organize volunteers, conduct polling, send text messages, purchase voter data, and reach communities through events and outreach.

The campaign with the biggest budget doesn’t always win.

But it almost always has a louder microphone.

That makes campaign finance one of the most important, and most overlooked, parts of American democracy.

Where Campaign Money Comes From

Campaign money comes from millions of Americans, but not all dollars carry the same influence.

Political Parties

National, state, and local political parties also raise money to support candidates through campaign activities, voter outreach, and organizational efforts.

Individual Contributions

Most campaign money comes from individual Americans.

Some donors contribute small amounts, $10, $25, or $100, while others give the maximum amount allowed by law.

Many campaigns emphasize the number of individual donors they have because it can demonstrate broad public support.

Political Action Committees (PACs)

Political Action Committees, or PACs, are organizations that raise and spend money to support or oppose candidates.

PACs may represent businesses, labor organizations, trade associations, or groups organized around particular issues.

Federal law places limits on how much PACs can contribute directly to federal candidates.

Super PACs

Super PACs operate differently.

Following the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission (2010), Super PACs may raise and spend unlimited amounts of money to advocate for or against candidates, provided they do not legally coordinate their spending with a candidate’s campaign.

Because of this, Super PACs have become major participants in federal elections.

Why Out-of-State Contributions Receive Attention

One question voters increasingly ask is not simply how much money a campaign raises, but where that money comes from.

Federal law allows Americans to support candidates anywhere in the country.

Some races become national because they could determine control of Congress, the White House, or key policy priorities.

As a result, candidates often receive millions of dollars from people who cannot vote for them.

Some view those donations as evidence that a candidate inspires support beyond their district or state.

Others worry that candidates may become more responsive to national donors than to the communities they hope to represent.

Campaign finance records don’t tell voters what to think.

They simply give citizens the information needed to ask thoughtful questions.

Following the Money Yourself

One of democracy's greatest strengths is that much of this information is public.

You don’t have to rely on campaign advertisements or social media claims.

You can examine the same financial records journalists, watchdog organizations, and researchers use.

That transparency is one of the most powerful tools voters have.

Useful resources include:

• The Federal Election Commission (FEC), which publishes reports filed by federal campaigns.

• OpenSecrets, which summarizes campaign finance data and independent expenditures.

• State campaign finance databases for gubernatorial, legislative, and many local races.

These resources allow voters to see:

• Who contributed to a campaign.

• How much money was raised.

• How campaign funds were spent.

• Which outside groups are spending money on a race.

Transparency gives citizens the opportunity to evaluate information for themselves.

Understanding Independent Spending

Not every political advertisement comes from a candidate.

You may see commercials, mailers, or online advertisements paid for by organizations that are not officially connected to a campaign.

These are often funded through independent expenditures.

Federal law requires political advertisements to include a disclaimer identifying who paid for them.

Taking a few seconds to read those disclaimers can provide valuable context about the message you are seeing.

Questions Every Voter Should Ask

Campaign finance reports rarely provide simple answers.

Instead, they help voters ask better questions:

For example:

• Who are this candidate’s largest donors?

• Is support coming primarily from local voters or national contributors?

• Are outside organizations spending heavily on the race?

• Does the campaign’s spending reflect its priorities?

• Are campaign messages consistent with the candidate’s voting record and public statements?

Good questions lead to better decisions.

What You Can Do

You don't need to be a campaign finance expert to become a more informed citizen.

A few minutes spent reviewing campaign finance information can provide insights that thousands of political advertisements never will.

• Look up campaign finance reports before sharing fundraising claims online.

• Read political advertisements critically and note who paid for them.

• Compare candidates using multiple sources of information, not just campaign messaging.

• Attend candidate forums or debates and ask questions about issues that matter to your community.

• Encourage friends and family to verify political claims using official sources.

An informed electorate is one of democracy’s strongest safeguards.

Transparency Strengthens Democracy

Campaign finance will always be part of American elections.

People disagree about how much money should be allowed in politics and whether current laws strike the right balance between free speech and political influence.

Those debates will continue.

What should not be controversial is transparency.

When campaign finances are public, voters, not politicians, donors, or pundits, can examine the facts for themselves.

Transparency doesn’t tell Americans what to believe.

It gives them the information they need to decide.

The Bottom Line

Campaign money can amplify a message.

It can buy advertisements.

It can hire consultants.

It can flood your mailbox and dominate your social media feed.

But it cannot cast a ballot.

Only informed citizens can do that.

Following the money isn’t about becoming cynical. It’s about becoming curious.

It’s about asking better questions, looking beyond campaign slogans, and recognizing that democracy works best when voters understand not only what candidates are saying—but who is helping finance the message.

The strongest democracies aren’t built by the biggest donors.

Every life has value. Every family deserves dignity. And every government action should be measured not only by whether it follows the law, but by whether it protects our shared humanity.

Recent fatal encounters involving ICE have left families grieving and communities searching for answers. Reports that some of those who died were not even the original targets of enforcement make these tragedies even harder to comprehend.

Accountability is not anti-law enforcement. Transparency is not anti-security. Asking what went wrong, and how to prevent it from happening again, is how we honor those who were lost and ensure that power is exercised responsibly.

Behind every immigration case is a human being, a family, and a community forever changed. We owe them more than silence.

Beyond ICE immigration policy. It’s about people.

It’s about parents separated from their children. It’s about individuals waiting in detention, uncertain of what tomorrow will bring. It’s about people with medical conditions wondering if they’ll receive the care they need, attorneys struggling to reach their clients, and families left searching for answers.

Former detainees, attorneys, medical professionals, inspectors, and advocacy organizations have raised concerns about conditions inside detention facilities, from access to healthcare and legal representation to overcrowding, prolonged detention, sanitation, and transparency. ICE disputes these allegations and says its facilities meet federal standards.

Reasonable people can disagree about immigration policy. But no matter where we stand, we should all agree on one principle: every person deserves to be treated with dignity, humanity, and respect while in government custody.

The true measure of a nation isn’t only how it enforces its laws, it’s how it treats the people whose lives those laws touch, especially when they are at their most vulnerable.

Why Accountability Matters

Accountability matters because the decisions made by immigration officers can change the course of a person's life in an instant.

A knock on the door can separate a family. A decision in the field can determine whether someone receives medical care, sees an attorney, or has the opportunity to make their case before a judge. With that kind of power comes an even greater responsibility to act fairly, transparently, and humanely.

As Americans, we should never be afraid to ask difficult questions:

• Are enforcement actions reaching the people they’re intended to?

• Are officers following the law and established procedures?

• Are people in government custody being treated with dignity?

• Are complaints investigated independently and fairly?

• Are families given honest information when their loved ones are taken into custody?

These aren't partisan questions.

Accountability doesn't weaken the rule of law, it strengthens it. A nation committed to justice can enforce its laws while also protecting the humanity and constitutional rights of every person. We should expect nothing less from those who exercise the power of the government in our name.

What Americans Can Do

Democracy isn't something that happens only on Election Day. It's something we practice every day by paying attention, asking questions, and holding those in power accountable.

If immigration policy matters to you, there are meaningful ways to make your voice heard:

• Learn how your elected officials vote on immigration laws, funding, and oversight.

• Contact your representatives and senators to share your concerns and ask where they stand.

• Stay informed and make your voice heard about how immigration enforcement is affecting your own community.

• Seek out facts, listen to the experiences of those directly impacted, and have conversations rooted in empathy rather than fear.

No matter where we stand on immigration policy, we should all agree that government power deserves oversight. Transparency builds trust. Accountability protects everyone. And treating every person with dignity reflects the values we strive to uphold as a nation.

The strength of a democracy isn’t measured by how much power it has. It’s measured by how responsibly that power is exercised, and by citizens who care enough to make sure it is.

Todd Blanche's confirmation hearing to become U.S. Attorney General is highly controversial because of his close personal and professional ties to Donald Trump, whose defense he previously led. Critics, including thousands of former Justice Department officials and the New York City Bar Association, argue these loyalties compromise his independence.

From Federal Prosecutor to Trump’s Defense Attorney

Blanche began his legal career as a federal prosecutor in the Southern District of New York (SDNY), one of the nation’s most prestigious U.S. Attorney’s Offices. During his tenure, he prosecuted a range of complex financial crimes and developed a reputation as an experienced white-collar litigator.

After leaving government service, Blanche entered private practice, representing corporate executives and individuals facing federal investigations.

In 2023, he left a prominent law firm to join Donald Trump’s legal team. Blanche represented Trump in several major criminal cases, including the New York hush-money prosecution and matters brought by Special Counsel Jack Smith. Those cases made him one of Trump’s closest legal advisers during one of the most legally challenging periods of Trump’s political career.

Following Trump’s return to office, Blanche was appointed Deputy Attorney General, making him the second-highest-ranking official in the Department of Justice.

On July 4, 1776, fifty-six delegates signed a document that changed the course of history.

The Declaration of Independence proclaimed that governments derive “their just powers from the consent of the governed” and declared that “all men are created equal.”

Those words have inspired freedom movements around the world for 250 years and we should always remember that extraordinary legacy.

But we should also remember an important truth.

The promise that "all men are created equal" did not extend to everyone living in America in 1776.

Enslaved people remained in bondage.

Women could not vote.

Many Indigenous peoples were denied recognition of their sovereignty and rights.

Indentured servants and many poor Americans had little political power.

The ideals expressed in the Declaration were revolutionary. Their execution, however, is incomplete.

The Story of America Is the Story of Expanding Freedom

The history of the United States is not simply the story of one founding moment. It is the story of generations of Americans working to bring the nation’s founding ideals closer to reality.

Over the past 250 years, Americans have expanded who participates in our democracy and who enjoys its protections.

The abolition of slavery ended one of the nation’s greatest injustices.

The Reconstruction Amendments established citizenship, equal protection, and voting protections in the Constitution.

Women fought for, and won, the right to vote.

The Civil Rights Movement challenged legalized segregation and led to landmark legislation, including the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

The voting age was lowered to 18, recognizing that those old enough to serve their country should also have a voice in choosing its leaders.

While recent reforms have significantly expanded voting access for millions of Americans through improved language assistance, better support for voters with disabilities, and modernized election administration, these hard-won rights are currently under attack. We must actively defend these protections and work to dismantle any barriers to the ballot box to ensure a truly accessible democracy.

The Founders Didn't Promise Perfection

The Constitution begins with a remarkable phrase:

“...in Order to form a more perfect Union...”

Notice what it doesn’t say.

It doesn’t promise a perfect union.

It promises a more perfect one.

That distinction matters.

The framers understood that democracy would never be finished. They created a system that could evolve through amendments, legislation, public debate, and civic participation.

Our democracy has endured because Americans have repeatedly challenged it to live up to its highest ideals.

What Does a More Perfect Union Look Like in 2026?

The challenges facing our democracy are different than they were in 1776.

Today, building a more perfect union may mean:

• Encouraging greater participation in elections.

• Helping first-time voters understand the process.

• Strengthening civic education.

• Respecting the peaceful transfer of power.

• Holding elected officials accountable.

• Having difficult conversations with respect instead of contempt.

• Finding common ground while accepting that disagreement is part of democracy.

These aren’t partisan goals.

They are democratic ones.

The Responsibility Belongs to All of Us

Democracy is often described as something we inherit.

But it is really something we are custodians of.

Not only by elected officials.

Not only by judges.

Not only by journalists.

But by ordinary citizens.

Every time someone registers to vote.

Every time a neighbor volunteers as a poll worker.

Every time a citizen attends a town council meeting.

Every time someone takes the time to understand an issue before casting a ballot.

The strength of our democracy depends not just on our institutions, but on our participation.

This weekend, we celebrated.

Celebrated 250 years of remarkable progress.

Celebrated the freedoms generations of Americans fought to secure.

Celebrated the institutions that have endured through moments of crisis and change.

Celebrated the millions of ordinary Americans who have helped move this country closer to its ideals.

Now we, get back to work.

Help someone register to vote.

Learn how a bill becomes law.

Attend a local government meeting.

Read beyond the headlines.

Listen to someone with a different perspective.

Volunteer in your community.

Vote in every election; not just presidential ones.

The work of democracy is not reserved for elected officials. It belongs to all of us.

Looking to the Next 250 Years

The America we celebrate now is stronger, more inclusive, and more representative than the nation that declared its independence in 1776.

That progress did not happen by accident.

It happened because generation after generation refused to accept that the nation’s highest ideals should belong to only a few.

Now it is our turn.

The question facing Americans on this 250th Independence Day is not whether our democracy is perfect.

It never has been.

The question is whether we are willing to continue the work of making it more perfect.

This weekend we celebrated how far we have come.

Now we begin the work of building a more perfect union for the next 250 years.

For 250 years, Americans have celebrated Independence Day with fireworks, parades, backyard barbecues, and family gatherings.

This year is different.

The United States marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, a milestone that invites us not only to celebrate our nation’s founding, but also to reflect on what it means to be a citizen today.

The Declaration begins with a powerful idea: government derives its legitimacy from the consent of the governed.

Today, one of the primary ways Americans give that consent is through voting.

Control of the U.S. Senate may come down to just a handful of states in 2026.

While 100 senators represent the entire country, only a small number of races are likely to determine which party holds the majority. According to election analysts and political observers, nine states are emerging as the most competitive battlegrounds in the fight for Senate control.

The exact outcome remains uncertain. Political conditions can change quickly, and many races are still months away. But one thing is already clear:

The road to a Senate majority runs through a relatively small group of states where turnout, voter engagement, and grassroots organizing could make the difference.

Democracy grows one voter at a time

Every election cycle, campaigns spend millions of dollars trying to persuade voters.

But one of the most effective ways to strengthen democracy doesn’t require television ads, consultants, or massive fundraising.

It requires conversations.

The truth is simple:

Most Americans know someone who is eligible to vote but isn’t registered, rarely participates, or believes their vote doesn’t matter.

If turnout shapes democracy, then helping even a handful of people become voters can have a meaningful impact.

The good news is that recruiting new voters is not complicated.

It starts with understanding why people don’t vote in the first place.

Why people don't vote

Many nonvoters are not apathetic.

Research consistently shows that people stay home for a variety of reasons:

• They are not registered.

• They don’t know when elections occur.

• They feel overwhelmed by politics.

• They believe their vote won’t matter.

• They don’t know enough about the candidates.

• They face logistical barriers such as transportation, work schedules, or childcare.

The solution is rarely a single conversation.

The solution is helping people overcome these barriers one step at a time.

Step 1: Start with people you already know

On May 1, known globally as International Workers’ Day, Americans will take to the streets to demand labor rights, immigrant protections, and broader social justice.

Organizers behind May Day Strong are calling for nationwide protests, walkouts, and economic disruption, with thousands of events planned across the country.

This isn’t just another protest day.

It’s a test of civic participation and like any test, preparation determines the outcome.

Before May Day: Preparation is power

The most effective protests don’t start in the streets. They start with planning.

Know your rights

• You have a First Amendment right to protest peacefully

• You can march, chant, hold signs, and record police in public spaces

• But protests must remain nonviolent and cannot block emergency services or traffic without permits

Make a plan

• Choose your location and understand the route

• Identify exits and safe meeting points

• Tell someone where you’ll be and when you’ll return

Don’t go alone

• Use a buddy system; safety increases in pairs or groups

Bring the right supplies

• Water, snacks, medications

• Comfortable clothing and shoes

• Phone (charged) + backup battery

• Emergency contact written down (not just in your phone)

Preparation isn’t paranoia; it’s sustainability.

Movements last when people are able to show up again tomorrow.

Once you’re there, your role is simple but critical:

The strength of a protest is not just numbers; it’s coordination.

After May Day: The movement continues

What happens after a protest matters just as much as the protest itself.

Take care of your body and mind

• Hydrate, eat, and rest

• Treat any injuries or exposure to irritants

• Decompress, protests can be physically and emotionally draining

Document what happened

• Write down details if there were issues with law enforcement

• Save photos, videos, and witness accounts

Stay engaged

• Share what you learned

• Support organizations leading the work

• Prepare for the next action

May Day is not the end goal.

It’s part of a longer strategy.

The most important truth is this:

The illusion of “after”

Wars don’t end when ceasefires are signed.

They end if they ever truly do when the economic, political, and social aftershocks fade. And for the United States, the Iran war is already creating ripple effects that will outlast the battlefield.

The most dangerous assumption Americans can make right now is this:

That once the conflict ends, life will return to normal.

It won’t.

The first shock is already here.

The Iran war triggered one of the largest oil supply disruptions in modern history, with up to 20% of global oil flows at risk due to instability in the Strait of Hormuz.

That shock has immediate effects, higher gas prices, rising costs, but the deeper problem is persistence:

• Oil price spikes feed into long-term inflation expectations

• Businesses raise prices not just for today, but for anticipated instability

• The Federal Reserve faces prolonged pressure to keep interest rates higher for longer

Even if oil supply stabilizes, economists warn the inflationary impact can linger well beyond the conflict itself.

And we are already seeing the consequences:

• Inflation pressures rising again

• Growth forecasts weakening

• Global momentum slowing

Americans will keep paying — long after headlines fade

The costs of war don’t stop when bombs stop.

They shift.

• Military spending has surged to billions per week, redirecting resources away from domestic needs

• Total costs are projected in the hundreds of billions

• That spending adds pressure to deficits, debt, and long-term fiscal stability

History is clear on this point:

War spending doesn’t disappear, it becomes future taxes, reduced services, or both.

At the same time:

• Higher energy prices reduce household purchasing power

• Businesses face higher costs, slowing hiring and investment

• The risk of recession rises as uncertainty spreads

Even a “short” war can leave a long economic shadow.

And once systems shift toward militarization, they are hard to reverse.

Why Hungary matters

For more than a decade, Viktor Orbán has provided a clear case study in how democratic systems can be reshaped from within.

He didn’t dismantle democracy overnight.
He rewired it gradually; reshaping courts, media, election rules, and civil society until opposition forces became structurally weaker.

But Hungary is not just a story of democratic erosion.

It is also a story of resistance, adaptation, hard-earned lessons that resulted in Péter Magyar’s victory.

For Americans concerned about democratic backsliding, Hungary offers a roadmap: what works, what fails, and what cannot be undone once it’s set in motion.

Lesson 1: Fragmentation is fatal

For years, Hungary’s opposition parties:

• Ran separate candidates

• Fought each other more than the ruling party

• Split the vote in critical races

The result?

Orbán’s party, Fidesz, maintained power even without majority public support.

By the time opposition groups unified in 2022, the system had already been reshaped:

• Electoral maps favored incumbents
