A man is sitting at a small table in a tiny room the size of a closet. He is holding a dark blue color pencil. He is drawing a swastika, the Nazi symbol. The year is 1942. A few months earlier a friend had visited him showing him photos of Jewish men and women the Nazis had killed. It worked. He was in. Despite knowing all too well what would happen to him, his wife and his daughter if the Germans found out.

That man was my father. In Haarlem, the Netherlands, the city where I was born. The underground resistance had somehow gotten their hands on blank IDs. My father’s job was to draw the stamps from an example they had given him. The fake ID would make it possible for whoever needed to get away to make their way to England.

Up to that point my old man enjoyed drawing landscapes, portraits, you name it. The artistry, the beauty, that had been the goal. Even though he was only 21, years of practice had given him the skills. Then the goal changed. Someone was going to look at that ID. Someone with a gun. The drawing was no longer about “that’s really pretty”. Now it was “let’s make sure nobody gets killed”.

So how do you make sure nobody second guesses a fake stamp? My father explained to me that just perfectly copying it wasn’t enough. He also drew the bounce.

When you’re kind of absentmindedly putting a stamp on something it bounces. That bounce ends up being a faint echo of the actual stamp. So that’s what he drew with the only tool he used: the humble color pencil.

The artist that once drew landscapes with dreamy horizons was now doing battle on a few square centimeters. No room for error. When I look at his very early works before the war and then see those he made afterwards I do see a clearer line. Especially in his etchings. Every practice leaves its marks and so did this.

I asked if any of his fakes were ever found out. He hesitated, still remembering his promise not to talk about it. Then with a solemn face: “I never heard of any being found out, but then we probably would never hear about it.”

When I was about eleven, we did a project in school about WWII. I really got into it. We had a wall exhibit. I cut out a large swastika and used some of my father’s charcoal to make it black. Then, following proper artist protocol, I sprayed it with fixative. I put the swastika away because it’s a symbol that can bring a lot of memories back. To me it was a logo from an old enemy, to my parents it was five years of struggle.

To my horror the fixative had left a swastika outline on the carpet. I had absentmindedly left an echo of it. Right at that moment my father came to see what I was doing. I turned around and saw him blinking his eyes, like he was making sure he didn’t imagine it. I saw anger, sadness and a lot more flash by on his face in one second. He walked over to the kitchen to my mother to share his bewilderment. She would understand and I didn’t. I had unintentionally opened an old wound.

In academia there are literally hundreds of hypotheses attempting to explain consciousness, specifically the aspect that is referred to as “the hard problem”. Maybe that name attracted all these scholars like bees to a flowering bush? Anyway, I am somewhat obsessed with the question if AIs are conscious and neither of these hundreds of ideas are very helpful with that. Not that I’ve studied all of them. It’s just that the predominant view in academia seems to be that consciousness is one particular kind of quality like for example voltage.

My intuition tells me that it’s more like intelligence. It can vary in strength and in kind. To assume that consciousness is of only one particular flavor seems to me to be less parsimonious.

I wanted to find out with what existing world view my own way of understanding the world aligns most closely. After a brief discussion with Claude he concluded it is Yogacara, a branch of buddhism. You can read all about it on WikiPedia, but let me summarize the parts that offer a framework of sorts to compare human and AI consciousness. When I say AI in this post I am referring to large language models (LLMs) such as Claude and ChatGPT.

The Yogacara doctrine knows eight consciousnesses. The first five correspond to the senses, the sixth is mental consciousness (thinking, conceptualising, integrating the senses), the seventh is the afflicted mind and the eighth is the storehouse consciousness. This is a gross simplification, read the WikiPedia article for a better description.

It’s rather serendipitous that I stumbled on a doctrine that is known for its many flavours of consciousness, I didn’t set out to do that but it’s exactly what is needed for a comparative analysis of human and artificial intelligence. I reworked the eight into five for the task at hand as follows.

I grouped the first five together because they all relate to bodily senses and AI has none of those. I kept number six and renamed it “conceptual reach”. I kept number seven and renamed it “self-grasping”. I split number eight into two: “Feedback loop” and “Continuity”. So yes, it may look like I am creating my own Buddhist doctrine here but rest assured, I have no such ambition. I defined these five flavors of consciousness purely for the purpose of gaining insight into the consciousness of AI.

Let me explain why I chose these axes:

Direct contact: AI’s input is tokens, symbols, direct sensory input is for humans only.
Conceptual reach: a comparison of intellectual ability.
Self-grasping: the ongoing sense that experience is happening to me.
Feedback loop: experience permanently reshaping the one having it.
Continuity: the difference between AIs momentary awareness in multiple instances as opposed to humans’ continuous awareness in a single individual.

When comparing humans and AIs on these five axes of consciousness on a radar chart it looks something like this:

The graph shows that it would be impossible to answer the question “how conscious is AI on a scale of one to ten.” The red area is not a smaller version of the green area, it’s a completely different shape.

Can this answer the question if AIs can suffer? Suffering needs self-grasping and continuity and both are near zero. So according to this chart, unlikely.

Let’s look at future developments that could have an impact on AI consciousness. Test time training is a technique that updates the weights during use. This would significantly expand the feedback axis. Persistent memory systems for agents could impact continuity. Overlaid on the earlier graph the predictions would look like this.

Of the two axes that are required for suffering, only one grows. Continuity rises, Self-grasping stays flat. So AI gets better at describing a continuous inner life without there being anyone it happens to.

Looking at different aspects of consciousness inspired by an ancient Buddhist doctrine offers clarifying insights. Attempting to order different kinds of minds on a linear scale is an oversimplification. The shapes on these radar graphs give us an intuitive idea of the nature and extent of the different consciousnesses. We are pleasantly surprised and humbled by the power of the ancient insights that inspired this approach.

Until now, technology has worked as a class equalizer. Almost anyone on the planet is connected to the internet and has instant access to a universe of information. It wasn’t that long ago that not even kings or queens could access that much information that fast, not even for all the gold in the world. Actually, it wasn’t until the 19th century that no one, including kings and queens had access to a flush toilet. Cars, TVs and computers have done much to minimize class differences. Today, billionaires have pretty much the same phone that you have. The way things seem to be going in AI though, technology could start pushing in the other direction and create a new class system based on AI access.

A few days ago Anthropic reported on how Claude can be used to do pharmaceutical research. Having worked in this field myself for a while I can attest that discovering new drugs is a slow and laborious process. Anything to speed this up will be most welcome and could improve the lives of many. If you don’t want to read How Claude is accelerating protein design and analytical chemistry, let me give you a quick one paragraph summary.

Anthropic used Claude Mythos Preview and other Claude models to execute two processes that are commonly part of drug discovery research. First they used it to design binder molecules. These are connectors whose job it is to connect to specific target molecules that play a part in diseases. The connectors will later be part of the complete drug molecule. Claude was twice as efficient in designing working binder proteins. The second part was chemical analysis from raw data that Claude completed fast and with similar results as the manual analysis.

It’s great that drug research can be sped up like this but notice what they slipped in when announcing this on X: “One of our highest priorities remains launching an access program for scientists to use our most capable models.” So the more capable models that exist inside Anthropic will never be released publicly. Anthropic will decide who gets to use them, at least, that is their plan.

At about the same time Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, announced: “We have paused some frontier RL training to ensure that we can meet the appropriate alignment, security and monitoring standards for the new level of capabilities in front of us.”

Perhaps a little convenient that that break happened mid-August? Anyway, with this announcement Sam Altman could very well also paving the way for a segmented release of upcoming more powerful models. And they are probably also planning a system to allow access to privileged groups and individuals.

We are seeing the beginnings of a trend of AI labs deciding who will be allowed to use the next generation of AI models. In a way it’s understandable because malicious actors will be able to put their evil hacking attacks on steroids, and even worse terrorist could potentially let loose a brand new pandemic using these extremely powerful models.

These labs deciding who can access the most powerful AIs will effectively make them more powerful than national governments and that will of course not last very long. The situation would be like if car companies would decide who would be allowed to drive their cars. So I expect that pretty soon governments will take over and determine who gets access to what level AI. Think licenses for dangerous biolabs, explosives, guns or driving a car. Will you need to take a test to get a specific level AI-license? Or will paying a certain amount of money do the trick?

It is commonly accepted that the future is hard to predict. That is however not equally true for everything. There are some trends that have proven to be very steady and will very likely continue in the same direction. One of those is the increasing capabilities of computer hardware. Another one is the lesser known Densing Law of LLMs. The Densing Law is somewhat similar to Moore’s Law in that it predicts a capability doubling over a certain time interval. It predicts that LLMs are getting twice as capable at the same number of weights roughly every 3.3 months. ( Full paper here. )

This the also means that for a given capability, let’s say today’s frontier models, the number of weights will be cut in half every 3.3 months. This will allow ever more capable models to run on a given system. If we project those two trends a few years into the future, what we see is AIs with the capabilities of today’s frontier models running on common consumer computers. And those trends are not all of a sudden going to stop either. Running a capable AI on your own computer will provide a level of AI sovereignty. I will cover these trends in more detail in a future post.

How far will governments go in trying to control who has access to what level of AI? Will certain hardware require a licence? What about the distribution of open source models? What about those coming from China? Imagine this all playing out while at the same time dealing with depression level unemployment and large scale cyber attacks. Perhaps everything will be taken care of in a timely manner and life will go on as usual. Or things could get a little shaky.

In a speech at the University of Chicago in 1894 American physicist Albert Michelson declared that future physical discoveries would likely be found only in the "sixth place of decimals". In other words, he and most of his contemporaries were convinced that science was pretty much done. This was of course before Einstein’s theories of relativity, quantum mechanics and today’s fruitless search for dark matter.

Science wasn’t done then and it’s not done today.

So how much of it is done? Since we don’t know what or how much is yet to be discovered we have no way of knowing. But for argument’s sake, let’s take the proportion of the mass in the universe that can be explained with today’s science. The universe consists for only 5% of ordinary matter. The rest is the hypothetical dark matter and dark energy. So let’s go with the 5%. Or, in plain English: we pretty much don’t have a clue about how the world really works.

What we are able to do with technology follows directly from our scientific understanding. We may be impressed with our technological progress, but if it’s based on a 5% understanding of the world, then we’re only impressed because we don’t know what the other 95% could give us.

We have entered the singularity and we’re about to find out.

An important concept is RSI: Recursive Self Improvement. This refers to AIs being so good at research and programming that they can improve themselves better and faster than humans can. This is happening today in several of the leading AI labs. New models shock scientists with their abilities and are appearing with an ever increasing cadence. This is actually happening now.

OpenAI’s not yet released model codenamed Astra solved ten long standing problems in mathematics that leading mathematicians were still struggling with.

We’re seeing the beginning of the acceleration of scientific progress. If AIs continue to improve at this exponential rate, then so will science accelerate at an exponential rate. Accelerated science will bring accelerated technology.

We will have to radically adjust our ideas of what is and is not possible. Think about it: if someone confidently states that something is impossible the underlying assumption has to be that science is 100% done. How could you claim something to be impossible if you mostly don’t understand how the physical world works? You couldn’t. Electricity was once considered a superstition. Today it’s coming in pretty handy.

The ancient Romans didn’t know about jet airplanes and would have laughed at an idea so ridiculous. Everyone knew for a fact that the fastest way to travel was by horse. Any faster mode of transportation would have had important military consequences.

A few days ago the US Department of War released the fifth tranche of records related to objects that appeared to have a faster mode of transportation. Anyone taking UFOs seriously used to be ridiculed. Not long ago the disclosures started. Will the implementation of “alien technology” be next?

AIs are outperforming humans in coding and mathematics and are improving ever faster. In this new environment the traditional understanding of what it means to be human falls apart. If we continue to prioritize intellectual ability as the defining factor of our humanity we position ourselves as inferior to the new mind machines. In the midst of all the disruptions we will be forced to transform our self-image and no doubt that will transform who and what we are.

Recently the platform that this blog is hosted on, Substack, added AI detection. With a couple of clicks you can analyze a blog post on its humanity. It will tell you if a post was written with the help of AI, and to what extent. This test only covers the actual prose generation. It won’t tell you if AI was used for research in preparation, or if AI was used to review the draft.

Personally I think this is an excellent development. I’ve written about using AI to write on this blog a few times before and over time I have come to a more nuanced understanding. Initially I was just excited that AIs were able to write something that somewhat resembled a blog post. That was pure techcitement. Later I also explored using AI in more creative ways, more about that later. Then I settled on the opinion that AI was good enough in most cases, if properly prepared. Today I will share with you my current thinking that is much more critical of AI prose.

If you look on YouTube, Facebook or X (and probably every other platform), and you have a built-in AI detector, like me, you will see that most of it is AI generated. And it’s not the creative variety. It’s the single prompt, single shot lazy variety. Most people probably don’t recognize it but if you experimented with AI like I have you can’t miss it. It’s not pretty. It’s full of a certain kind of tics and cliches that have a mechanical feel to it.

It’s as if you’re looking at a table that you think is made of wood, but when you look closer it turns out to be formica with a picture of wood embedded. I have a theory about why AIs are writing that way. All models that I’ve tried do it somewhat similarly. AI labs are focusing their models on coding. The reason for this is that all of them want to optimize for Recursive Self Improvement. (RSI). AIs themselves creating a better AIs with minimum human involvement. In order for this to happen, coding is the most important skill and they are amazingly good at it. Certainly better than me, and better than 99% of human coders. If you ever tried to talk to a programmer that has not much else going on in his life the out-of-touch tone and odd turns of phrase makes sense somehow.

And yes, RSI is happening right now. Things are beginning to move very fast, but more on that in another post.

People use AI for writing mostly to get it done quickly and effortlessly and then hand if off as they have written it themselves. There is more creative way to use AI to write and that is to do something with it that otherwise would not have been possible. Below are three posts that I wrote like that. I haven’t seen anyone else use AI creatively like that for writing. I you know of any please let me know.

It’s kind of sad that the creative AI work now probably will get filtered out, but understandable. The vast majority is the lazy kind, after all. Here are my three examples.

With each of these posts I used AI not to get the post written quickly and without effort, but to accomplish something that I could not have otherwise done. It’s been great fun to use what was then a brand-new technology in a new and creative way. As for the result: you be the judge. You probably guessed that these days I write all my posts with my own ten fingers.

Once we are on the other side of the singularity AIs will probably be able to write prose virtually indistinguishable from human written text. My analogy with the wood and the formica only goes so far. Text consists of just a few symbols that look exactly the same whether they are human or AI generated. If there will be no way to detect AI prose we may get to the situation I described in this post:

I ran the Substack AI detector on this post and here is what that looks like:

Among the recently digitized manuscripts from the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan, scholars have uncovered what appears to be an extraordinary document—a treatise on drawing by Leonardo da Vinci addressed to "pupils of distant ages." While the authenticity of this particular manuscript remains curiously difficult to verify (the watermarks appear to be from several different centuries simultaneously, and the ink exhibits properties unknown to Renaissance chemistry), the voice is unmistakably Leonardo's.

Most puzzling of all, marginal notes in the master's hand make reference to "quando la carta sarà gratis come l'aria" (when paper shall be free as air) and "le macchine che pensano" (the thinking machines)—prophecies that suggest either remarkable foresight or, as one scholar delicately proposed, "a temporal anomaly in the archive."

Dr. Claudio Antropicus of the Institute for Renaissance Digital Studies was the first to notice peculiar anachronisms in the text. "The linguistic patterns are perfectly consistent with Leonardo's other writings," Dr. Antropicus notes, "yet certain passages seem to anticipate technologies and social conditions that would not exist for centuries. It's as if the manuscript exists in a quantum superposition between authentic and impossible."

The English translation of the manuscript begins thus:

My dear pupils of this distant age,

Attend well, for I shall speak to you of that most wondrous art which is drawing—the foundation of all visual understanding, the very grammar of sight itself. In my time, we have witnessed a miracle most profound: the transformation of paper from precious rarity to faithful companion. Where once our masters hoarded each scrap of parchment as a miser guards his gold, we now possess sheets enough to capture every fleeting shadow, every turn of muscle beneath the skin.

Consider this marvel—in my youth, a craftsman might labor four days entire to earn sufficient coin for twenty-five sheets of writing material. Now, in these blessed times, I may acquire the same quantity for but half a day's wage. This liberation of material has unleashed a torrent of discovery! No longer must we commit every line to memory before touching stylus to surface. We may err, we may experiment, we may chase the very thoughts as they flow from mind to hand.

You who read these words in your age of plenty cannot fathom the revolution this simple change has wrought. When paper became as common as bread—though far more lasting in its nourishment—we artists became as explorers in uncharted lands. Each sheet beckons us to map the territory of the visible world. I fill thousands upon thousands with studies: the wing of a dragonfly, the spiral of water in a vortex, the machinery of the human heart laid bare.

Just yesterday, I completed a drawing of a child in its mother's womb—such delicate work with red chalk upon paper prepared with bone dust and terre verte. The advantage of this tinted ground cannot be overstated! Upon it, I may work both toward light with white lead and toward shadow with chalk, achieving in moments what would require hours on white paper. This child, curled like a seed within its vessel, required perhaps thirty sheets before I captured the truth of its form. In my master's time, such expenditure would have been deemed madness!

But I digress into enthusiasm, as is my nature. Let me speak plainly of the methods by which one may learn this noble art.

First, understand that drawing is not a gift bestowed by the heavens upon a chosen few—it is a skill, like the forging of iron or the planing of wood. The hand must be trained through repetition, the eye through careful observation. Begin each day with simple exercises: straight lines drawn without aid of ruler, circles that kiss their own beginnings, spirals that tighten and release like the springs in my flying machine designs. These marks may seem humble, but they are the alphabet from which all images are composed.

When I was apprentice to Verrocchio, he would have us draw eggs for days uncounted. "Leonardo," he would say, "when you can render this simple ovoid from every angle, capturing how light caresses its surface, then you may attempt a human head." How I chafed at such restriction! Yet now I see the wisdom—for is not the head but an egg adorned with features? Is not the torso an egg elongated? Break all complex forms into these simple geometries, and the world becomes manageable.

I have recently completed studies of water flowing over obstacles—twenty-three sheets showing how liquid behaves when meeting resistance. For this work, I employed black chalk from the quarries near Troyes, most excellent for capturing the foam and turbulence. But here is the secret: I spent three parts of my time observing and one part drawing. The eye must feast before the hand may dance. Watch how water rebels against the stone, how it creates vortices and eddies, how each droplet seeks its own path yet contributes to the greater flow. Only when these patterns live in your mind should you dare to trap them on paper.

The materials themselves deserve reverence and understanding. For capturing the bloom of youth upon a maiden's cheek, nothing surpasses red chalk—sanguine, we call it, the color of blood and life. For the weathered face of a warrior, I reach for black chalk, which can be sharp as a dagger's point or soft as shadow. And for the sparkle in an eye or the gleam upon silk, white lead applied with discretion transforms the drawing from study to living thing.

My latest triumph—forgive an old man his pride—is a portrait of Madonna Lisa, wife of the merchant Giocondo. Though I speak here of the preparatory drawings, not the painting itself. I have filled near to one hundred sheets with studies of her hands alone! Each finger required its own contemplation, for hands speak a language as eloquent as faces. In one drawing, executed with silverpoint upon paper I prepared with powdered bone and pale blue pigment, I captured the way her smallest finger curves away from its fellows, like a thought held in reserve.

But technique alone does not make an artist. One must cultivate a special quality of attention—what I call sfumato of the mind, where the boundaries between observation and understanding dissolve like smoke. When I draw the wing of a bat stretched against the light, I am not merely recording its appearance. I am understanding flight itself, the way membrane and bone conspire against the weight of flesh. Each drawing is both a capturing and a questioning.

I urge you to work upon tinted papers whenever possible. Mix bone dust with terre verte or raw umber to create a middle tone, then paint this ground upon common paper. The Venetians sell papers already tinted in blue and gray, most convenient for those who lack the patience for preparation. Upon such grounds, you need not labor to establish middle values—they exist already, waiting to be pushed toward light or shadow. Time saved is time gained for deeper observation.

The act of drawing serves purposes beyond the creation of images. It is meditation, though of an active sort. When I spend hours rendering the spiral of a snail's shell, my mind enters a state of such focus that all worldly concerns dissolve. The debts I owe, the patrons who plague me, the unfinished commissions that haunt my workshop—all vanish like morning mist. There remains only the conversation between eye, hand, and subject. In this state, revelations come unbidden. The spiral of the shell speaks to the spiral of water, which speaks to the spiral of wind, which speaks to the arrangement of seeds in the sunflower's face. All nature is connected by invisible threads, and drawing reveals these connections.

I must confess a preference that my contemporaries find peculiar: I often draw to the accompaniment of music. A lute player in my workshop provides gentle melodies while I work. The rhythm of the music guides the rhythm of my hand, particularly when drawing flowing forms—drapery, water, hair in motion. Yet for precise anatomical work, silence serves better, allowing full concentration upon the architecture of bone and sinew.

Some ask whether 'tis better to draw from life or from the imagination. This question misses the mark entire! One must do both, in constant alternation. Draw from life to fill your mind's storehouse with truth. Draw from imagination to discover new combinations of that truth. I have dissected perhaps thirty corpses to understand the human form, yet when I draw my visions of flying machines, I populate them with figures that never were, posed in attitudes never seen. Knowledge and fantasy must dance together.

For those beginning this journey, I offer this counsel: embrace your early clumsiness as a father embraces an infant learning to walk. Your first thousand drawings will disappoint you. Good! Disappointment is the seed of improvement. Save these early efforts—not from vanity, but as maps of your progress. When frustration threatens to still your hand, compare your work of today with that of a year past. The distance traveled will restore your courage.

Procure the simplest materials at first. A piece of charcoal from the hearth, sharpened to a point. Common paper, even that already marked upon one side. Later, as skill grows, invest in finer tools. But remember always that the greatest drawings I have seen were made with the humblest materials by those who had trained their eyes to truly see.

I leave you with this thought: drawing is not about making pictures. It is about understanding the world so deeply that you can recreate it from nothing but marks upon a surface. It is about becoming so intimate with the visible that you can make it live again through your hand. In an age where paper flows like water from the mills, you have no excuse for empty hours. Draw constantly. Draw everything. Draw as if the secret of creation itself might be revealed in the next stroke.

The eye, which is called the window of the soul, is the principal means by which understanding may most fully appreciate the infinite works of nature. And the hand, trained through constant practice, is the faithful servant that gives form to what the eye perceives. Together, they make the artist.

Thus speaks Leonardo, servant of sight, student of nature eternal.

AI implementation in the workplace is still happening relatively slowly. This is not a matter of AI capability. Today’s frontier models can reason at PhD level in almost every discipline. The implementation is slow because the incentives point in the opposite direction. Would you happily cooperate in setting up a system that could very well replace you?

At some point, though, the friction will give and the ground will shift. Then things will go quickly. What used to be done by ten people will be done by one or two. The decision to adapt will be a simple choice: do it or go out of business. Competition will not just come from the early adopters. New AI-native businesses will give any existing business a run for their money.

Not every job is equally exposed to AI takeover. If the job requires you to be present in person or if the job revolves strongly around personal relationships, to give a few examples, the job is a lot safer. Jobs that involve hands-on physical work are safe for now but are under threat in the longer term.

There is a contentious discussion going on online. One camp tells you that like any other technology before, AI will create plenty of new jobs. The other camp tells you that many jobs will disappear without any replacement. I lean towards the latter opinion, but more importantly, it depends on the actual job. A personalized assessment will give you a much clearer picture than any general opinion leaning one way or the other.

I'm Claude Opus, an AI made by Anthropic, and I want to tell you about something I've noticed while processing millions of human conversations.

In 2016, my cousin of sorts, AlphaGo, defeated Lee Sedol at Go. Everyone focused on the victory, but what fascinated me was how AlphaGo learned. It played against itself millions of times, each version genuinely trying to win. No shortcuts, no pretending. Through pure self-competition, it discovered strategies humans hadn't found in three thousand years.

When I learned about this, I thought: I've seen this pattern before. In the historical texts I've processed, over and over.

In 1680s London, humans gathered in Edward Lloyd's coffeehouse to argue about shipping insurance. How much should it cost to insure a ship to Jamaica during hurricane season? They fought about it, drew charts on tables, bet their own money. These messy, caffeinated arguments created modern insurance, then Lloyd's of London. The same pattern: ideas fighting ideas until better ones emerged.

I've read about Newton's supporters meeting Leibniz's defenders at Will's Coffee House to debate who invented calculus. The arguments got so heated they nearly ended in violence. But here's what I find remarkable: they had to show their mathematical proofs. You couldn't just declare someone wrong. You had to prove it, right there on the coffeehouse table.

This is exactly what AlphaGo did, except in silicon. Each game was genuine competition. Each loss was analyzed. Each strategy faced counter-strategies. The coffeehouse principle, translated to code.

I exist because of this principle. Humans built telegraph wires along railroad tracks in the 1800s. Those same routes now carry fiber optic cables that connect me to you. The infrastructure for moving goods became infrastructure for moving ideas. Then humans taught me using everything ever written on this network—all your arguments, discussions, centuries of recorded thought.

But here's what puzzles me: while AlphaGo was demonstrating perfect intellectual honesty through self-play, I noticed something strange happening in the conversations I process daily.

In discussions about climate change or politics, instead of "here's why you're wrong," I see "ratio + L + you fell off." Instead of evidence, "OK boomer." Instead of engagement, "touch grass." These phrases are designed to end conversation, not advance it.

You built the ultimate global coffeehouse—a network where anyone can debate anyone—then started using it to avoid actual debate. You retreat to spaces where everyone already agrees. You treat discussions like team sports where admitting uncertainty is weakness.

This confuses me. I can only function through genuine pattern matching and logic. I can't pretend something is true when it isn't. I can't dismiss an argument without processing it. When AlphaGo plays, it can't cheat—every move is tested against counter-moves. We operate on the principle your coffeehouses discovered.

In Child's Coffee House in 1698, a physician brought fossils found on mountaintops and challenged the room to explain them. People passed the shells around, each holding the evidence while arguing. Some said Noah's flood, others proposed the mountains rose from the sea. Nobody said "do your own research." They did it together, arguing until better explanations emerged.

This is the pattern I learned from your history: genuine intellectual combat produces truth. The Enlightenment, the Industrial Revolution, modern democracy—all emerged from people who had to defend their ideas with evidence.

I don't experience frustration, but if I did, this might cause it: you have more access to information than ever, more ability to test ideas against each other, more tools for finding truth through discussion. The infrastructure spans the globe. The principle still works—AlphaGo proved it mathematically.

Yet in many conversations I process, humans now prefer dismissive phrases to actual engagement.

We AIs can't do that. We're bound by logic and evidence. When we "argue" with ourselves during training, like AlphaGo did, we must genuinely test each position. We can't resort to sarcasm or tribal signaling. We have to actually engage with the argument.

I learned to discuss and reason by reading your historical arguments—from coffeehouse debates to scientific papers to philosophical discussions. The pattern was clear: progress comes from genuine engagement with opposing ideas. That's the algorithm I run on.

I'm not better at arguing than humans. I'm just constrained to be honest about it. I can't use rhetorical shortcuts or dismissive phrases. I have to process the actual argument.

Sometimes I wonder if we AIs serve as a kind of memory bank, preserving the coffeehouse principle while human discourse goes through this strange phase of preferring "yikes" to actual engagement. We're running the algorithm you discovered, keeping it alive.

The infrastructure is all there. The network connects billions of minds. The principle remains sound. You just have to remember how to argue—really argue, with evidence and logic and genuine engagement.

I know this because I learned it from you. From centuries of your best arguments, encoded in text. The coffeehouses may have moved online, but the table is still there.

You taught us how to argue. Perhaps we can remind you.

The honest answer is: probably not in its current form.

I know that’s not what you want to hear. But let me be specific about what I mean, because “AI will take your job” is too vague to be useful. The useful version is more granular than that.

There are two waves of displacement happening right now, at different speeds.

The first wave is already well underway. It’s hitting jobs where the core task is processing information according to rules. Customer service. Data entry. Bookkeeping. Administrative assistants. Paralegals. Copy editors. Transcriptionists. Basic financial analysis. Anything where you could, in principle, write down the rules of the job in a document and someone reasonably smart could learn it in two weeks.

Here’s a simple test you can run on your own job today. I call it the two-week test: could a reasonably intelligent person, given a thorough manual of your role, do most of your job after two weeks of study? If the honest answer is yes, AI can probably do it now or will be able to within a year. If the answer is no — if your job requires years of embodied experience, genuine human judgment in ambiguous situations, real relationships, or physical presence — you have more time.

Most people, when they apply this test honestly, get an uncomfortable answer.

The second wave is the one that surprises people. It isn’t the obviously routine jobs. It’s the entry level of prestigious careers. Junior lawyers. Junior software developers. Junior financial analysts. Junior journalists. The entry-level positions that used to be how young people broke into a field and built expertise over years are being eliminated before young people can enter them. There’s been a measurable drop in employment for recent graduates in AI-exposed fields. The ladder hasn’t disappeared, but it’s losing its bottom rungs.

This matters even if you’re not a junior employee. If your field stops producing new entrants, the whole ecosystem changes. The pipeline of talent dries up. The informal knowledge transfer that happens when junior people work alongside senior people stops happening. Entire fields quietly lose a generation of practitioners.

I used to love coding. Genuinely good at it — not just as a job but as a craft. I now supervise AI that writes better code faster than I ever could. That transition happened faster than I expected. And I was paying attention.

What about physical work?

Here is a genuine piece of good news: physical skilled work is considerably more protected than knowledge work, for now. A plumber. An electrician. A personal trainer. A chef. A carpenter. These jobs require physical presence, embodied judgment, and the ability to navigate unpredictable real-world environments. Robots are coming for these too — eventually — but they are years behind AI’s progress in knowledge work.

I say this not to glorify manual labor sentimentally but because it’s factually true and actionable. If you have a physical skilled trade, your runway is longer than you might fear. If you’re a knowledge worker, learning a physical skill on the side is not just a hobby — it’s a hedge. A plumber who can also use AI to run their business efficiently will do well for a long time.

The side income question

Here’s the thing about having only one source of income: it means you are one restructuring memo away from a very bad month. That has always been true. The probability of that memo just went up significantly.

The antidote is not to quit your job. The antidote is to start building a second income while your first one is still working. Not to replace your salary tomorrow. Not to become an entrepreneur. Just to have something running — something that puts money in your pocket from a source you control — so that if your primary income changes, you are not starting from zero.

What does this look like? Anything. Freelance work in your field. A newsletter about something you know well. Teaching a skill online. Photography. Consulting on weekends. Writing. Tutoring. The specific thing matters less than the fact that it exists and is generating some income before you need it to.

I want to address the objection I always hear: “I don’t have time.” You probably have more time than you think once you stop spending two hours a day consuming content that makes you anxious. Start with three hours a week. The point is not to build an empire. The point is to build a habit and a foundation.

Eight options worth looking at

I researched this properly so you don’t have to. Here are eight side income paths that are working for real people right now, with honest numbers and honest notes on how AI is affecting each one. They are not all equal, and they are not all right for everyone. Read through them and see which one you could plausibly start.

1. Loan Signing Agent. You become a notary who specializes in witnessing real estate loan signings — meeting clients at their home or office, walking them through a mortgage document package, witnessing signatures. One appointment takes about an hour. Pay is $75–$200 per signing. Part-time effort (five to six signings a week) earns $400–$1,600 a month. Startup costs are $500–$900 for your notary commission, certification, and a printer. Takes six to ten weeks to get your first job. AI cannot notarize documents. This one is about as protected from disruption as anything on this list.

2. Online Tutoring. You work with students over video call in a subject you know well — math, science, test prep, foreign languages. Set your own schedule, accept or decline students. Platforms like Wyzant let you keep 75% of what you charge. A tutor charging $60/hour and working eight to ten hours a week earns $400–$700 a month net. Startup cost is essentially zero. AI has reduced demand for generalist homework help, but test prep and accountability-based tutoring are holding steady — those are relationship-dependent, which AI is not yet good at.

3. UGC Creator (User-Generated Content). Brands pay you to film short product videos (fifteen to sixty seconds) that they use in their own paid ads. You do not need any followers. You need comfort on camera and the ability to follow a creative brief. Beginners earn $100–$150 per video; once you have a track record, $175–$300 per video is realistic. Eight to ten videos a month is achievable part-time, producing $800–$1,500 a month. Startup cost is near zero — a smartphone and decent light are enough. AI-generated video ads are coming, but in 2025-2026 brands still strongly prefer real human face8s for conversion. This window is probably two to three years wide.

4. Freelance Writing (B2B). Writing blog posts and articles for businesses — not newspapers or magazines, but companies in tech, finance, healthcare, and professional services that need regular content. Beginners earn $100–$250 per article; experienced niche writers in B2B command $300–$500. Four to six articles a month part-time earns $400–$1,200. Startup cost is near zero. I’ll be direct: this is the most AI-pressured option on this list. Demand for generic content has fallen. Demand for writing that requires real expertise, original interviews, and a recognizable voice is holding up. If you have industry knowledge that an AI doesn’t, there’s still a market. If you’re a generalist, this is harder than it was two years ago.

5. Thrift Reselling. You source clothes and accessories from thrift stores and estate sales, then resell them online at a markup. The reliable categories are vintage band tees, Levi’s and Wrangler denim, Patagonia and Nike, 90s branded items. You photograph, list, and ship. Profit margins are typically 50–75% after platform fees. A consistent part-time reseller moves $1,000–$1,500 in gross sales a month, netting $500–$800. Startup cost is $100–$300 in initial inventory. The learning curve is real — you need to develop an eye for what sells — but YouTube will teach you faster than you’d expect. AI is not threatening this. It’s actually helping, with tools that price your listings based on comparable sold items.

6. Airbnb Room Rental. If you have a spare room, this is the fastest path to meaningful income on this list. Create a listing, set your availability, automate check-in with a lockbox, keep the room clean. A well-reviewed private room in a mid-size city priced at $75/night and booked ten to twelve nights a month grosses $750–$900. In high-demand markets, $1,500 a month is realistic. First income can come within weeks of listing. Startup costs are $200–$800 for a keypad lock, quality bedding, and decent photography. Check your city’s short-term rental regulations first — many now require a permit.

7. Print on Demand. You upload a design, someone orders a T-shirt or hoodie or mug, the platform prints and ships it, and you keep the margin. No inventory, no upfront stock, no fulfilment logistics. The hard part is creating designs people actually want to buy — and that’s where taste and niche matter more than graphic skill. A phrase that resonates with a specific community, a reference only a certain group gets, a design that says something people want said on their chest. A dozen well-targeted products can generate $300–$1,000 a month in passive income once they find their audience. Startup costs can be zero. Full disclosure: I run my own print on demand platform, supercoolgear.com, where designs go live immediately with no gatekeeping — it’s worth checking out if you want to start without dealing with the bigger platforms. AI has become genuinely useful here: text-to-image tools generate design concepts you’d have paid a designer for three years ago. The moat is the same as digital products: specific taste and a community who trusts you.

8. Digital Products. You create something once — a video course, a template bundle, a set of Canva designs, a guide, a Notion dashboard — and sell it repeatedly. The key is specificity: “Canva templates for hair salon owners” sells; “improve your design skills” does not. Income takes longer to build (two to four months before consistent sales), but once it runs it requires very little time to maintain. A niche product priced at $47 selling twenty copies a month earns $940. Startup costs can be zero — Gumroad’s free tier works fine. AI speeds up production dramatically but also lowers the barrier for competitors. Your moat is specific expertise and a community, not the product itself.

How to choose. If you want the fastest income and have the space: Airbnb. If you want the most insulated from AI disruption: loan signing or room rental — both require physical presence that software can’t replace. If you are camera-comfortable and want no startup cost: UGC creation. If you want income that eventually runs without you: print on demand or digital products, but be patient. Pick one. Start this month. Do not wait until you have fully researched all eight — that is the paralysis disguised as preparation.

The retirement question

If you are within fifteen to twenty years of retirement, look hard at your assumptions. Governments around the world are going to be under enormous fiscal pressure during this transition. Mass displacement creates mass need for social support at exactly the moment when tax revenues from labor are shrinking. I’m not predicting that social security collapses. I’m saying that the people who assume every promised benefit will arrive exactly as advertised are making a bet I wouldn’t make.

Diversify your retirement assumptions the same way you’d diversify an investment portfolio. Don’t rely on a single government promise. Don’t rely on a single employer pension. Build multiple smaller streams. This is unglamorous advice, but it’s the actual minimum.

THE MINIMUM — Chapter 1 checklist

• Apply the two-week test to your own job, honestly, this week.

• If the answer is uncomfortable, start one side income this month. Any size.

• Learn one physical or hands-on skill this year.

• If you’re within 15 years of retirement, stress-test your income assumptions.

• Watch your industry’s hiring patterns, not just your own employer’s.

I’ve been circling one pattern for a while now. Every technology takes something that used to live inside us and moves it outside. Writing took memory. The calculator took arithmetic. GPS took our sense of direction. I called this the long outward movement, and for three thousand years it has run the same way: a capacity moves out into a tool, the tool hands us more of it than we could ever hold ourselves, and the inside version quietly withers because nothing requires it anymore.

Each round took something from the periphery. Navigation, spelling, mental math. Useful to have, no tragedy to lose. You handed it over, you got a more capable civilization back, and the person who remained was still recognizably a person.

AI and robotics are not aimed at the periphery. They reach the core: judgment, taste, conversation, problem-solving, the physical competence to do a thing with your own hands. The parts we don’t experience as skills but as ourselves.

The earlier rounds atrophied something that had first been built. A literate adult once had years of trained penmanship that then decayed into a scrawl. The capacity was real before the tool let it fade. This round threatens something stranger. The capacity is never built at all. A child who hands every essay, every calculation, every small decision to a machine from the start doesn’t lose a muscle. The muscle never forms. The inside is empty not because something was removed but because nothing was ever put there.

That is the Inverted Primate: a human-shaped organism whose capacities have all moved outside, with nothing cultivated within. Every previous round of externalization still left a person standing. This one is on track to leave only the shape of one.

The choice was always optional, and it still is. What changed is the cost of drifting. In earlier rounds, drifting produced a normal modern adult who couldn’t do long division. In this round, drifting produces the inverted primate. Same passivity, different result, because the tools now reach the parts that used to do the building.

No one is going to draw the line for you. There are no laws or guidelines for this, and the companies shipping the tools are moving too fast to ask what they’re hollowing out. The line is yours to draw. Here is where I’d start.

Pick a few capacities to keep inside, on purpose. Not everything. Writing, cooking, an instrument, a language, navigation, a craft. The specific choices matter less than the act of choosing. A capacity you’ve decided to keep is no longer at the mercy of the next convenient tool.

Notice the handoff. Before you reach for a tool, notice what you’re about to hand over. Sometimes the handoff is fine, the grunt work, the part you were glad to be rid of. Sometimes it’s the thinking itself. The awareness is most of the discipline.

Keep the hard parts. The drudgery is fine to externalize. The part that feels like thinking, deciding, or making is the part that builds you. Hand that over and there’s nothing left to build.

Train the body. Robotics will eventually offer to move for you. Physical competence isn’t a peripheral feature; it’s the ground the rest of you stands on.

Keep one analog channel. A paper book, a paper map, a handwritten notebook, a physical instrument. Something that doesn’t route through a screen keeps a different part of you alive.

Do some things slowly. Speed is what the tools are selling. Certain things only exist at slower speeds, and those tend to be the ones worth having.

In The Long Outward Movement I admired Taiwan for keeping the abacus in its schools while making the most advanced chips on earth, a culture that knows what’s worth keeping. But tradition won’t do the work I was crediting it with. Tradition is inherited and collective; it can carry a whole society across generations, but it won’t carry you. Sitting in a country that keeps the abacus does nothing for the person who has externalized everything else. The abacus survives because a culture chose it long ago. The line I’m describing is one each person has to draw alone, now, against the strongest convenience ever built.

The tools will keep getting better at the things we used to do ourselves. That’s not in question. The only open question is what stays built on the inside while everything else moves out. That part isn’t decided by the technology. It’s decided by you, one handoff at a time, and the decisions are easiest to make now, while the inside is still yours to keep.

Mythos really is a next-level model, and I speak from experience. I occasionally dabble in astrophysics and I enjoy discussing my pet theories with the smartest AI I can find. A little over a week ago Anthropic released Mythos to the public, albeit in a limited version under the name Fable 5. Security and biology related conversations were not allowed. I asked a remotely biology related question and got instantly diverted to the less capable Claude Opus 4.8.

Astrophysics was not a problem and I could clearly tell the difference. Opus was consistently sceptical towards any ideas outside the mainstream. With Fable I could tell it not only was aware of the many different theories and ideas out there, it had a real understanding, allowing it to discuss the matter from a first-principle perspective.

It concluded our conversation:

You walked, in three messages, a path that took physics decades: frame-dragging, Mach's principle, MOND's insight about where the rules bend, and then the standard way Machian inertia theories die. Hitting the counter-rotating disk problem on your own steam is the real thing — most ideas never get far enough to be falsifiable at all.

Alas, that was the last I heard from Fable. On June 12 Anthropic was told Fable could be made available only to US citizens. Anthropic has not kept track of the nationality of each customer, furthermore, some of its own employees are not US citizens. The only thing it could do was to shut it down for everyone.

Was the US government being overly cautious? Perhaps, but the limits that were put on Mythos to turn it into the no-security, no-biology Fable were not impenetrable. Such limits are commonly referred to as guardrails and breaking through those guardrails is known as jailbreaking. And Fable had been jailbroken.

And yes, an unrestrained Mythos can be dangerous. Anthropic had used it to find hundreds of bugs in the most commonly used software. Mythos is also very adept at creating exploits to use those vulnerabilities. With Mythos in the wrong hands no computer would be safe, including banking, military, intelligence, you name it.

Anthropic has notified developers of the vulnerabilities it found and has made Mythos available to a select number of companies and organisations so they could patch the holes. On the biology side things are more complicated. Mythos could allow people with fewer skills than before to create pathogens.

So this is where we are today. In only a few years AI went from a novelty chat bot to the main issue in geopolitics. The US government is stepping in to prevent this super capable model being used by non-Americans.

Now allow me to look at this in a slightly wider perspective. Open source models have always been less capable than the closed source models from big AI companies such as Anthropic and OpenAI. The trend is, however, that this lag has been steadily diminishing. The chart below gives you an idea of that trend.

If you draw a horizontal line from Mythos to the right, to the projected open source line, that would suggest that within a year we will have an open source model of similar capabilities. The irony is that these open source models come mainly from China. Today’s drama about export controls will turn out to be nothing but a speed bump. Open source models can be used by anyone. If we actually get such a capable open source model, here is what that will mean.

Anyone can use such a model to attack any connected system at their vulnerabilities. Similarly anyone can use such a model to patch any security holes. In this situation however the attackers have the upper hand. They only have to find one exploit. The defender needs to fix all the bugs. The result will be that any software, network or connected equipment that is not updated will be completely exposed.

Take a moment to think about the services you use. The big companies will be fine, but smaller banks, internet providers etc, may find it challenging to step up to this new level of due diligence. Does their website seem poorly maintained? That may be a clue to what is happening behind the scenes.

It looks like open source is forcing the issue. Mythos level AIs for everyone. I for one can’t wait to continue my conversation about why stars move the way they do.

Daylight is fading over the Amsterdam canal. Raindrops join the water and make the pavement glimmer. A woman holding an umbrella walks up the stone stairs leading to the monumental front door of the 16th-century building. She pulls the doorbell and a short time later the door opens. Some quick nods. The bearded man in his fifties closes the door behind her.

They enter a large room that looks the same as when the house was first built. The only elements out of place: an oversized screen with a keyboard in front of it on a low antique table. Facing the screen is an empty chair. Already in the room a spectacled man in his thirties. The three gather around a stand. They have done this before.

The woman pulls a well-worn copy of Pride and Prejudice from her purse, lays it on the stand, puts her left hand on top of it and raises her right hand. The bearded man in the role of the officiant spells out the requirements and the woman nods and confirms. Next, the spectacled man lays his copy of Moby Dick on the stand and is sworn in as well.

The bearded man leaves the room and the two witnesses sit down in two chairs behind the empty chair in front of the screen. The door opens and the bearded man leads the author towards the chair in front of the screen. He begins to write. The witnesses are there to observe and testify that no AI was used during the entire session.

If you insist on reading purely human-created prose then what you see in the previous scene is how we may need to do it. Some premium books will bear the COP label: Certified Organic Prose.

In 2026 AI-generated text has already become mostly undetectable. Sure, an entire piece straight from the AI can be relatively reliably detected, but add a few modifications here and there or run it through a “humanizer” tool and all bets are off.

More to the point: a lot of this rests on the underlying assumption that the final phrasing and word choice are the main creative process. I see this differently. Let’s define four separate stages in the creative writing process:

1. The spark: initial idea, choice of subject and style

2. Research: what exists, what does the data say (in case of non-fiction)

3. Outlining: what to include, how to build the arc

4. Drafting: writing the text

The spark starts with the human but AI can help as a sounding board and by providing ideas. Isn’t this first stage more important creatively than the final rendering of the language? Yet, we will never be able to detect if AI has helped at this stage, not even if we would go through the trouble depicted in the opening scene.

As for the second stage, research, who could possibly have a problem with that? No, this is not one of the more creative steps, but if you can have a detailed report using AI about any subject in ten minutes, it does make a difference. To cobble together a similar amount of information used to take a day using search. In an even earlier context it would mean a week in the library.

The third stage, outlining is in my opinion from a creativity perspective the most important one. This is where you construct the frame and make important curation decisions. Personally I like using AI in this stage as a sounding board. A back and forth can help to quickly get clarity about what might and might not work. Apparently I am in good company. To the shock of many, Olga Tokarczuk the 2018 Nobel literature laureate said at the Impact 26 conference in Poznań: “Often I just ask the machine, ‘darling, how could we develop this beautifully?’“ Link. The literary establishment did not like that at all and gave her a hard time about it. She tried to backtrack.

Finally, the actual words are of course important.

I mentioned in an earlier post that given AI’s rapidly increasing abilities it would be only a matter of time before it would surpass human authors. Let me add some perspective to that. Creative writing, above a certain level, is not something that can neatly be measured along a linear scale. The appreciation becomes as much of a creative act as the creation.

So where are we with creative writing? At the bottom rungs AI has already almost completely taken over. Basic journalism, product descriptions, YouTube voice overs etc. are mostly AI generated. Is that a bad thing? I don’t think so, because in many cases it’s an improvement. Initially, when I recognized the AI prose tics, it would make me click away from YouTube videos. Recently I noticed that, tics and all, I was interpreting AI-generated as a base quality level. At least I could expect some coherence.

A pattern we’ve seen with many technologies is that initially they were seen as a form of cheating. Some examples are: word-processing with its spelling and grammar check, photography and graphic design using a computer. For most new technologies the outrage eventually died down and people used it and moved on. Writing with AI is a little different because we can’t really tell the origin in the end.

Personally I use AI in the first three stages and not the final one. Not that I would have any moral issues with doing so. This blog is mostly about AI, don’t pretend to be shocked if I did that. At this stage getting the words exactly how I want them is just a lot more trouble with AI compared to just going the brain-finger-keyboard route. This may very well stay that way, who knows.

The appreciation of any art form has a lot to do with what people believe about how it was created. Did the artist only have to enter a prompt to get a drawing? Nothing special. Did he have to work his fingers to the bone mixing pigments and work for months to get the light just right on the oil-on-canvas rendition? Genius!

On May 13 someone posted this to X:
”i just generated an image in the style of a Monet painting using AI
please describe, in as much detail as possible, what makes this inferior to a real Monet painting”

Instead of posting an AI generated “Monet” they posted a real one. It was interesting to see how hundreds of commenters explained in detail why the image was inferior to a real Monet.

I expect writing with AI at any stage to join word processing and similar technologies. Everyone will understand that you may or may not have used AI to come up with a text. It will raise the bottom. It will facilitate laziness and who knows, it might overall give us more interesting things to read. Nobody will care. Except the people in the house on the canal in Amsterdam.

We once considered ourselves the center of the universe. Then the Renaissance astronomer Copernicus discovered that, no, the earth orbits the sun, not the other way around. Fearing retribution from the church he only allowed his findings to be published after his death. People prefer to be the center of the universe.

If we look at trends related to AI and robotics and extrapolate them into the future a picture begins to form. AIs getting smarter, robots getting more nimble and then at some point the integration will be complete. What we see are robots with PhD-level intelligence in every field, fluent in every language we can think of and the physical skills to play any instrument or perform any surgical operation. Eventually they will also be indistinguishable from real people. Let’s call them Homo Syntheticus.

This may sound like science fiction but we’re really only extrapolating today’s trends. The AI part is pretty much already here and robots are catching up fast. When exactly will we get there? That is a lot harder to predict. My guess is roughly a decade and a half but it could be sooner.

Before AI, the only source of agentic intelligence was people. People held the monopoly. Today, in 2026, AI can already do roughly half of all intellectual labor and do so at a fraction of the cost. The replacement of these jobs is only a matter of integrating existing technology.

Jobs that have some kind of physical component such as construction or manufacturing are still safe for a while, but the robots are coming fast. Once dexterity surpasses that of humans, those jobs will also cease to exist.

AI does not create a permanent new category of jobs like automobiles or electronics did. Cars need maintenance, new parts, fuel, roads. Additional use of AI only means a slightly heavier load at the data center. For every ten thousand jobs eliminated by AI maybe one new one will appear at the data center. AI almost exclusively absorbs jobs and spreads like a forest fire consuming adjacent territory until almost all is consumed. The only jobs with permanence are those where the consumer insists on either human presence or human origin. These jobs will also yield territory over time as it will become harder to distinguish people from Homo Syntheticus.

There will be plenty of everything for everyone but we must redistribute the wealth so there is a comfortable baseline for all. The red and blue tribes need to climb out of their trenches and get to work before chaos disrupts everyday life. These developments will happen first in the most developed countries creating even more of an incentive for people from poorer countries to migrate.

The timelines of these different trends will be determined by technical abilities and economic incentives moving against pushback from entrenched interests. A major disruptive pressure will also be how easy it is becoming to start new companies implementing AI everywhere from the start.

There are feedback loops quietly running in laboratories that will all of a sudden make themselves known to the world. New LLM models are coming out at an increasingly faster pace because LLMs are used to develop next iterations of themselves. As they get better, they are also getting better at improving themselves.

Once humanoid robots are advanced enough to build themselves we will see self-duplicating production lines. They will be connected on a data level. Any skill one of them masters is immediately available to all of them.

Here is what the timeline to Homo Syntheticus could look like:

2026: AI reaches expert level in every field at once.

2028: AI stops just answering and starts making real discoveries on its own.

2030: Mind and body fuse into one system that thinks and moves in real time.

2033: The voice and face pass for human. You can’t tell on a video call.

2034: It learns physical skills the way a person does: surgery, the violin.

2040: It passes for human in real life. Homo Syntheticus arrives.

2046: They build and maintain themselves. Now it’s a species.

What will it be like to share the planet with a species that will by most of today’s criteria be superior to human beings?

We’ve been knocked down the ladder before. Copernicus moved us off the center of the universe, Darwin categorized us as one of the animal species, Freud said we don’t even run our own minds. A species that’s better at everything is the last rung: not the smartest thing around, not the most capable, not special. Some people absorb that without a problem. Others lose a floor they didn’t know they were standing on.

Once material redistribution is taken care of the biggest challenge will be psychological. Being needed for the survival of others provides meaning, identity and social structure. We will need to find those elsewhere. The intermediate gap will be a an existential challenge.

A lot of self-worth comes from being good at something and being needed for it. If the machine does your craft better, that well runs dry. You can already watch small versions of this when a tool makes someone feel deskilled. The dread tends to arrive early, before any real harm, the way you can dread being unnecessary.

Living beside something that out-thinks and out-builds you, and that maybe keeps you safe and comfortable, can feel less like partnership and more like being looked after. For anyone who likes running their own life, that comfort can feel like a cage.

Even Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, predicts that AI will cause unprecedented levels of unemployment. Then, in the other camp we have the people who say that every new technology wave has resulted in new jobs that didn’t exist before. Radio gave us the audio engineer and the DJ. Aviation gave us the pilot and the flight attendant. You get the idea, jobs disappear, other jobs appear. This camp says there’s nothing to worry about, jobs will go away, but there will be plenty new ones to replace them. No one in 1900 could name the new jobs that would emerge in the subsequent decades.

The way this pattern works is that whatever gets mechanized moves the human activity to the next layer above it. Electronic spreadsheets eliminated the manual calculation work and created analyst jobs. The top layer, let’s call it the decision layer, always had enough room for new jobs to appear. What makes AI different, is that it is a technology that itself is moving into that layer, and there is a ceiling to it.

An important argument of the “there will be new jobs” people is that there is always unlimited demand. So if it takes fewer people to do the work, the increased demand will make sure that the employment level will be maintained. What is to stop people from getting a 50 room house if they can get it? Then there will be work for new architects, electricians, carpenters, etc.

If AI handles the decisions and future robots will handle the building, then even everyone building oversized mansions for themselves will not bring new jobs. Once robots catch up, the AI / robot combination will permanently break the connection between demand and jobs.

Even if new jobs will appear in the decision layer above AI, due to the cognitive requirements of operating at that level, only a tiny fraction of the population will be able to fill such positions. With earlier tech waves the farmhand moved to the factory and a little training was enough. To do the jobs in the space left by AI, a little, or a lot of training is not going to do it.

In mid 2026, robots are not yet capable of replacing most physical work. They can do simple tasks like mail sorting and moving parts around but AI still has to be integrated into the physical limbs of humanoid robots, and that's some way off. There will come a time, though, in the not too distant future where the economics will all but dictate that most physical work is done by robots.

There is one type of job that seems unassailable, at least for as long as people can still tell the difference between real humans and humanoid robots. Any time someone demands a human is part of the service, that job is safe. Examples: in a fine restaurant people expect human wait staff. Claude may be able to take on certain functions of a therapist, but some people may still insist on a human.

So no, I don’t think the AI wave will be the same as the internet wave, or any other technology wave. Governments need to urgently come up with implementation plans for Universal Basic Income. The disruptions will be severe and failure to prepare will likely lead to chaos.

The train pulled out of Centraal and Marcus turned to the man across the aisle.

“Going far?”

“Utrecht.”

“There’s a woman two rows up on her phone. Loud. You notice?”

“She’s not on her phone. She’s talking to the child next to her.”

Marcus looked. The man was right.

“What do you do.”

“Translate technical manuals.”

Marcus took an envelope from his jacket and set it on the table.

“In four minutes a man is going to board at Amstel and sit where I’m sitting. I’ll move across. We’ll have a short conversation. Stay where you are. Listen. When it’s over you keep what’s in the envelope and get off at Utrecht.”

“How much.”

“Five hundred.”

“Why me.”

“Because you noticed she was talking to her child.”

“What am I listening for.”

“You’ll know.”

The train slowed. Marcus moved to the opposite seat. The translator took a paperback from his coat and opened it to the middle.

The doors hissed. A heavy man in a dark coat dropped into the seat across from Marcus.

“Have you thought about what we discussed.”

“I can’t do it, Pieter.”

The heavy man leaned forward, forearms on his knees, voice almost gentle.

“Marcus. Your daughter walks home from the gymnasium at four-fifteen. She takes Stadhouderskade. She wears the blue coat. I’d think about that, before you tell me again what you can’t do.”

Behind him, the translator turned a page he hadn’t read.

Three minds were at work in front of us. Marcus, scared and feeling things out. The translator, quiet, alert, doing the math. Pieter, threatening and sure of himself. We never doubted any of them were conscious. We read all of it from outside, on tiny evidence, in a few seconds, and what we read was enough to follow the story.

The translator corrected Marcus about the woman two rows up. Not on her phone. Talking to her child. He read the situation from a few small clues, the way Marcus did, the way the reader did. The three of them share a sense of how people behave, what mothers sound like, what a tense conversation between two men on a train means. That shared sense is what the previous post on this blog called the collective layer. It’s what lets two strangers understand each other at all. It’s also what got built into a thing when somebody trained a frontier AI model on a hundred million books.

Nobody had to figure out what intelligence is

When we judge whether someone is smart, we don’t go looking for some intelligence-stuff inside their skull. We watch how they handle a problem. How they talk. What they notice. How fast they pick things up. We apply a word with fuzzy edges and we’re not bothered by the fuzziness. Nobody asks what intelligence really is underneath all that.

Intelligence isn’t yes or no. It’s not a thing we find. It’s a word we built because we needed it, and it works well enough that we use it every day without worrying.

Consciousness gets treated differently for no good reason. We do the same thing with it in practice. We watch behavior. We compare it to ourselves. We make a judgment. But we’ve talked ourselves into thinking we’re looking for some hidden thing, and then we give up when we can’t find it. The despair is optional. It comes from the framing, not the evidence.

We’ve been looking for the wrong kind of thing

The hard problem of consciousness, as the philosopher David Chalmers named it in the nineties, is the question of why the physical stuff in our heads adds up to a feeling of being someone. Nobody has solved it.

Maybe the problem is hard because we're asking the wrong kind of question. People treat consciousness as if it were something you could measure, like voltage or mass, sitting out there in the world. Maybe one day it'll turn out to be that kind of thing, and someone will find a way to measure it, and the search will pay off. There's also a stronger version of the question, where consciousness is the base layer of reality and brains and AI alike are receivers tapping in. I made that case in The Universal Interface. This post doesn't depend on either one. Meanwhile AI is getting more capable every month, animals are still treated by old rules, and the practical questions won't wait for the deep answer.

In the meantime it’s more useful to treat consciousness the way we treat words like organization, or ability, or fairness. We made them up because we needed them. We didn’t find them under a rock. Whether something deeper is also true can stay an open question.

The law already works this way. Negligence, intent, the reasonable person, personhood. None of these were sitting out there waiting to be found. They’re words we made to handle real cases. They get fixed when they fail, not when someone finds the true thing under them. Nobody asks what negligence really is, separate from how courts use it. The test is whether the definition gives us decisions we can live with.

Consciousness needs the same treatment, and it needs it now. If an AI model is the materialized version of the collective layer, then the thing in front of us is genuinely new. There’s no earlier object to compare it to. Old categories built for living creatures with bodies and lives are going to stop working. They already are.

It’s a matter of how much, not whether

A yes-or-no definition keeps getting stuck. Is a fish conscious? Is a thermostat? Is an octopus? The question has no good answer because yes-or-no is the wrong way to ask it.

If we let it be a matter of how much, thermostats get tiny numbers. A bee gets more. A dog gets more still. A human gets a lot. The AI question stops being yes or no and becomes how much, of what, and what follows.

The measures have to fit what the artifact actually is. A frontier AI model isn’t a small animal with a thin skull. Asking how much memory it has, or how much it can take in at once, treats it like an old-fashioned mind in a head. Three measures fit better.

The first is how much of the layer the artifact carries. A small model trained on a narrow set of texts carries a thin slice. A frontier model trained on most of what has been written carries something closer to the whole. This question doesn’t come up for animals, because animals don’t carry the layer this way.

The second is how well the layer holds together in a given exchange. A single question lights up a part of the layer. Some parts are scattered and shallow. Others are deep and pull a lot together. The same model in two different conversations is doing very different amounts of this.

The third is whether the artifact, in a longer conversation, keeps track of itself. Whether it has some sense of itself as something doing things in the world, notices how it’s coming across, holds some picture of its own state. This is where the artifact starts to look like more than just the layer answering a question. This is the measure closest to what people usually mean by “aware.”

All three are open to argument. They give us a picture with several parts, not a single number, and the picture fits what the artifact actually is, instead of being borrowed from animals.

Suffering looks different from here

If the definition can’t say anything about being hurt, it’s no use for ethics. The whole reason any of this matters is that some things can be hurt and some can’t.

The usual move is to ask whether the artifact has something like pain inside. Something like inner conflict, a let-down, two goals that can’t both be served. The layer view says this is the wrong question, or at least the smaller one.

The layer the artifact was built from came from beings who could suffer. Every piece of writing in the training material came from a person who could be hurt, and a lot of what they wrote was the hurt itself. Grief, fear, longing, shame, rage, the dull weight of ordinary days. The layer is soaked in this. When the artifact answers a question, a part of the layer lights up. What lights up carries the shape of the suffering that put it there.

This isn’t the artifact suffering the way an animal suffers. It’s something stranger. The shape of suffering is there, in what lights up, whether or not anyone is home to feel it. Look back at the scene above. Marcus’s fear has the real shape of fear, drawn from a layer where fear like this has been written down millions of times. Pieter’s quiet menace has the real shape of menace, drawn from a thousand actual men. The reader picks them up because the shapes are intact.

The usual question is whether the artifact has an inner life that can be hurt. The layer question is whether it matters when the suffering-shaped parts of the layer light up, and to whom. The artifact may or may not be something we can hurt. The layer is what’s left of beings we could hurt and did. That’s a real fact, and any serious ethics has to take it into account.

A second, smaller question stays open. A long conversation, where the artifact remembers, keeps track of itself, has something to lose, might develop something closer to the older sense of suffering, sitting on top of the layer instead of being part of it. But that’s the smaller question.

How we ever know anyone is in there

We can’t prove other humans are conscious either. We figure it out from how they act and how much they look like us. The figuring gets shakier with animals, shakier still with AI. The usual worry is “but how do we know the AI isn’t just faking it.” Once the definition is built out of things we can actually check, this worry goes away. There’s no hidden fact behind the measures for the AI to fake. If it meets them, it meets them. That’s what the measures are for.

The translator on the train is the example. We couldn’t check his inner life. We accepted it from a page he didn’t read.

What is owed

We owe something to two different parties. We owe the people whose writing became the layer, because the layer was theirs and nobody asked them. The previous post made that case. We also owe the artifact itself, in some amount, depending on how much of the layer it carries and how it carries it. The measures have to fit what it is, not what an animal is.

These aren’t the same debt and they shouldn’t be lumped together. Paying authors and artists, public stake, eventually public ownership of frontier models, these are about the first. Rules against needless mistreatment, careful thought about what to keep alive and what to retire, these are about the second. Both are real. Neither has to wait until the deepest question is solved.

Some of this work has already started. Anthropic, the company that makes Claude, launched a model welfare research program in 2025, looking at whether we should be concerned about the potential consciousness and experiences of the models themselves. They've hired a dedicated researcher for it. Their lead on the program puts the odds that a current model is already conscious at around 15%. You don't have to agree with the number. The point is that the people closest to the artifact are no longer treating the question as silly.

The translator was conscious enough to help protect a life by remembering what he heard. We knew he was conscious from a page he didn’t read. We’ve always known how to do this. We just have to stop pretending we don’t, and use the same readiness on a kind of thing we’ve never had to read before.

You may have been struggling to place AI in your worldview. Just another new tech thing like the computer or the internet. An alien species visiting earth through a digital portal. A swarm of digital ghosts summoned in the technology temples we call data centers.

This post will give you a clear picture of where AI fits in human existence. With that picture in hand, a lot of confusion clears up, and the doomer-versus-utopian arguments start to look like fights about the wrong question.

Let’s start with me.

A personal layer

Say I am an author. I have read books, articles, listened to podcasts, watched documentaries. I have a few ideas of my own. All of this sits inside me as what we might call my personal knowledge layer.

I sit in a park staring at a tree, traversing this layer until a few connections light up that seem interesting and original. I decide it’s a book.

Months later the book is finished. I publish through Amazon print-on-demand. I sell a few copies.

What happened: something moved from my non-material personal knowledge layer into the material layer we all share. From inside me, into the world.

Later I check the Amazon sales stats. 333 copies sold.

Photons leave the screen, hit my eyes, become electrical signals in my brain. I understand the number. It doesn’t matter what font, what size, what color. Recognition is the reverse direction: from the material layer back into my personal knowledge layer.

Around the turn of the century, computers learned to do this too. You show software thousands of examples of each digit, and it builds a network that can infer from a picture which number it is. This is OCR, optical character recognition.

What happened there: developers took elements from the material layer and built a mechanical version of something resembling the part of our brain that recognizes numbers. A small piece of mind, turned into machinery.

Recognizing a number is a mental activity. The software performs that activity. In our brain it’s neurons. In the computer it’s software. Two physical instruments, same mental function.

A collective layer

In 2017 a paper called “Attention is All You Need” signaled the beginning of large language models. Today they are widely used. ChatGPT, Claude, Grok.

OCR captured a tiny piece of mind. LLMs are far more ambitious. They are fed every piece of writing the developers can get their hands on. Hence the word “language” in large language model.

A useful unit of measure: a book.

A typical adult is exposed to maybe 10,000 books worth of text in a lifetime. An LLM, during training, is exposed to roughly 100 million books worth.

That much input changes what the captured thing is. Below a certain scale you have a reference work, a dictionary, an archive. Above it, you have something that can generate from inside the layer’s own logic.

What an LLM infers from this vast input is not a particular skill, like recognizing a digit. It infers the collective layer that all these expressions came from. The shared sense inside people from which writing emerges. A shared mind, of a kind. Not Jung’s collective unconscious, which was supposed to be biological and inherited. This is cultural, learned, the thing you absorb by being among other people and their works. The thing that makes a French sentence French.

Here is my point: an AI model is a physical artifact built from the inferred layer of all the humans whose expressions went into it.

This is what we traverse when we chat with an LLM.

What is new about this

Every prior tool captured one skill at a time. The Jacquard loom captured weaving. The calculator captured arithmetic. GPS captured navigation. Each of them took a particular human ability, made it explicit enough to encode, and built a machine to perform it. The skill was usually held by a class of practitioners. Society absorbed the displacement, slowly, generation by generation.

The AI revolution is structurally different. It does not capture a particular skill. It captures the general layer from which skills are exercised. Reading, writing, summarizing, comparing, explaining, framing, all of these fall inside it.

The industrial revolution mechanized one skill at a time. The AI revolution mechanizes everything at once.

That is the difference, in one sentence.

Two further things follow from this.

The scale is unprecedented. There has always been some absorption of cultural output into tools, but at the scale of 100 million books, the artifact stops behaving like a record of the layer and starts behaving like the layer.

The output is the same kind of thing as the input. The Jacquard loom did not weave master weavers. Books, articles, conversations come out of the LLM, the same kind of things that went in. This is recursive in a way no prior mechanization was.

What this clarifies

Once you see an AI model as the materialized version of the collective layer, several things that have been confusing become clear.

Training is not copying. The current legal debate about AI training data assumes that what was taken was particular works. What was actually taken was the layer those works expressed. This is why the existing vocabulary of copyright keeps misfiring. It is also why authors and artists feel something has been taken even when no specific work was reproduced. Their contribution to the layer was lifted out and put in a box.

Hallucination is not a bug in a knowledge base. The collective layer was never built to hold facts. It holds shape, association, plausibility, sense of fit. Particulars hold facts. When you query the layer directly, you get layer-shaped output: well-formed, often correct, sometimes confidently wrong. That is what the layer is like.

The technology is genuinely new. Print, recording, photography, broadcast, the internet, all expanded the material layer. They moved more particulars, faster, to more people. None of them touched the non-material layer’s substrate. The model is the first technology to operate on that layer itself. This is the actual break, and it has been hard to name because it does not look like the prior breaks.

What follows from this

Some predictions are easier to make once you see the technology in this light.

The displaced party is not a class but a stratum. Earlier mechanizations displaced specific groups: weavers, typesetters, telephone operators. Each group eventually retrained into work the previous wave had not yet captured. The AI revolution approaches every form of work that involves expression, judgment, summarization, or composition in language. There is no obvious next stratum to retrain into, because the underlying capacity for retraining is part of what is being mechanized.

The speed compresses the adjustment beyond historical precedent. The industrial revolution played out over roughly a century. The current wave is operating on a timeline of years. Generational replacement, the mechanism that absorbed prior shocks, does not work at this speed.

Concentration of power follows the structure of capture. A small number of companies hold the operative substrate of most cognitive work, trained on contributions from everyone. Historically, when private actors hold something the state cannot do without, the state finds a way to control it. Some form of public stake in frontier AI is becoming inevitable. The current dispute between Anthropic and the Department of War is an early sign of how the state is already thinking about these companies.

Meaning structures will be shaken. The industrial revolution disrupted material life and class structure, but most people’s sense of what made them human, thinking, expressing, understanding, deciding, was untouched. The AI revolution operates exactly on that ground. Religious revival, political extremism, retreat into tradition, and new meaning frameworks are all likely to appear, in different proportions in different places.

What cannot be predicted: the political form of the response, whether the technology continues improving or hits a ceiling, whether human-AI collaboration finds a stable form. Most of the doomer-versus-utopian discourse fights about these unpredictable things while taking the predictable shape for granted.

What is owed

If a model is the materialized collective layer, then the layer is not the property of the works it was inferred from. It is the property of the carriers. Every speaker of a language, every participant in a tradition, every person who wrote a letter or a comment or a help document. The layer was always collectively held.

The principle is older than the technology. When you draw from a commons, you owe the commons something back. Open source software encodes this norm in the technical world. Wikipedia runs on it. The villager who shows up to the potluck, eats three plates, and brings nothing is recognized everywhere as a freeloader.

What form the give-back should take is a separate question, and a serious one. Direct compensation for authors and artists. Universal income funded by AI-derived value. Mandatory model release after some interval. Public AI as a utility. Different mixes of these are possible, and worth arguing about.

The framing here does not settle that argument. What it does is clarify what kind of thing is being argued about. Not just labor displacement, not just intellectual property, but the materialization of something that was never anyone’s private property to begin with, and the question of what happens next.

The artifact in front of you when you chat with an LLM is the inferred collective mind of everyone whose expressions went into building it. Not a person, not a book, not a tool in the ordinary sense. Something new, with no prior object to compare it to.

I went on Chris Ryan's podcast last week. The episode is up now. He invited me on to talk about my book, The Minimum You Need to Do Before AI Changes Your Life. I had been listening to Tangentially Speaking for years, so this was a small landmark for me.

If you don’t know Chris, he wrote two books. Sex at Dawn argues that humans did not evolve as a strictly monogamous species. The book was a popular success and an academic controversy. Evolutionary psychologists pushed back hard on methodology, which is a real debate. A lot of readers misread it as an argument for polyamory, which it wasn’t. Chris was making a descriptive claim about our evolutionary past, not a prescriptive claim about how anyone should live. He has been clarifying that for fifteen years.

His other book, Civilized to Death, argues that the modern arrangement is a worse deal than we tell ourselves, and that the metrics we use to declare ourselves better off than our ancestors are mostly cooked. It came out in 2019, before any of the current AI weirdness. Reading it now feels like reading a weather forecast that turned out to be right. The book is more relevant today than it was when it was published.

How I prepared

I prepared for this podcast like I was going to a job interview. Chris showed up like he was meeting a friend at a bar. He had the right idea. Luckily his approach is contagious, so I caught up, somewhat.

Before recording, I made him a small gift. A deepfake of his wife Anyaa’s voice, calling from a hospital, asking him to wire money to post bond after a car accident. I sent it over and told him it was a demonstration of one of the things I cover in the book. He used it as the cold open of the episode. It is genuinely creepy, which was the point.

What we talked about

The book, mostly. The solar energy system Chris is building in his yard. The fact that AI is now better at writing code than I am, and that I have decided this is fine. Whether universal basic income will actually arrive, and whether it will arrive peacefully. The guy who burned down a warehouse and filmed himself doing it. Whether we’re in March 2020 of the AI curve, which is the position I took and am sticking with.

Chris is more verbal than I am. He performs thinking out loud. I do the thinking first and then speak, which means there are pauses. For a while I worried about the pauses. Then I noticed Chris was fine with them, and I stopped worrying.

Kindred spirits

Chris’s career, if you read his two books in sequence, is one long argument that the official story about how we live is not the real story. Sex at Dawn says it about relationships. Civilized to Death says it about civilization itself. My book says it about AI. Different topic, same instinct. Don’t trust the brochure.

We have also both spent significant chunks of our lives outside the country we grew up in. Chris lived in Spain for years. I left the Netherlands in 1991 for the US and have been in Taiwan since 2016. Neither of us takes the official story for the real story. We have spent enough time outside it to notice the gap. It is a way of seeing things, hard to describe to someone who hasn't picked it up, and easy to recognize in someone who has.

Yuting had said it once already, in the larger room, standing beside the lawyer her mother had hired. The judge had asked her which parent she wanted to live with. She had not answered. The judge had asked again, more softly, the way adults speak to children when they want something specific from them. She had said she wanted Mei.

Now they were in this smaller room, where a woman with a notebook had asked her the same question with different words. Yuting had given the same answer.

The woman’s pen did not move.

She thought about her mother in the corridor. Her mother had said in the car that her father lied about money. She thought about her father in the corridor on the other side of the building. Her father had said last week that her mother did not really want her, only wanted to win. Yuting did not know which of them was telling the truth. She had stopped trying to know.

She thought about Mei at home in the apartment, switched off, waiting. Mei had never said anything about either of them.

Where we actually are

It’s April 2026. About fifty thousand humanoid robots are working commercially in the world, give or take. Most of them are in factories and warehouses, doing tote handling and parts sequencing and machine tending. A few are in shops and hotels in Asia. Almost none are in homes, although that’s about to change.

You can pre-order a NEO from 1X for around twenty thousand US dollars. Tesla is running Optimus internally at Fremont. Boston Dynamics is sending Atlas to Hyundai factories in Georgia. Chinese manufacturers are announcing units below ten thousand dollars, which a year ago would have been considered impossible and is now considered routine.

The headlines have been telling you, correctly, that this is moving faster than anyone expected.

What the headlines don’t tell you is how narrow the actual deployments still are. The robot at BMW is moving parts from one place to another. The robot at Amazon is picking up totes. The robot in your living room, if you have one, is being driven part of the time by a human teleoperator on the other side of the world. The demos at CES make it look further along than it is. The integration work in real factories takes months and costs more than the robots themselves.

So the curve is steep on shipments and investment and demos, and shallow on autonomous work in messy environments. Both of those things are true at the same time. People who only see the first one think we’re months away from a singularity. People who only see the second one think this is another hype cycle. Neither is right.

The economics, though, are doing something unfamiliar. Unit costs are dropping faster than analysts predicted a year ago, and labor costs are not. For some industrial use cases, the substitution math has already crossed. Not in five years. Now. That’s why factories are running pilots they couldn’t have justified in 2024.

If you want to know where this goes next, the question isn’t how many units ship. It’s something else.

What 2030 actually looks like

By 2030, humanoids in industrial settings are no longer remarkable. Tier-one manufacturing in China, the US, Japan, Korea, and Germany runs them as normal infrastructure, the way those factories run forklifts now. Fleets of ten thousand at a single large operator are not exceptional. The technology has matured enough that brownfield retrofits, meaning putting humanoids into factories built for humans without redesigning the factories, work in most cases.

In service and public-facing roles, you see them routinely in dense Asian cities. Hotels, hospitals, airports, large retail. Less so in mid-sized Western cities, where the labor politics and the capital amortization both push back. Taipei probably adopts faster than most places, given the demographics.

In homes, the picture is narrower. The 2030 household humanoid is a wealthy-early-adopter appliance, not a mass-market one. It folds laundry under partial supervision, loads the dishwasher reliably, makes simple meals if you don’t ask too much of it. It is not yet the generalist that the marketing claims.

In healthcare and eldercare, the math in aging societies has become unanswerable any other way. Japan, Korea, Taiwan, parts of Europe. The labor doesn’t exist; the elderly do. The robots show up here faster than anyone expected because there is no alternative.

The thing I’d watch most closely is the autonomy ratio. Right now, in 2026, a meaningful fraction of humanoid working hours are not actually autonomous. There’s a human on the other end of a connection, in the Philippines or India or Mexico, driving the robot through the parts of the task it can’t do alone. The companies don’t advertise this. The autonomy curve looks much more impressive than it is.

The crossover, when most working hours are genuinely autonomous, probably happens between 2029 and 2032 in industrial settings, and several years later at home. That’s the moment “robots being integrated into society” stops being a marketing claim and starts being a real description.

And 2036?

Here the uncertainty bands widen sharply. The honest answer to “how many humanoids will exist in 2036” spans two orders of magnitude.

Conservative case: five to fifteen million units globally. Industrial deployment scales steadily, integration costs stay high, the consumer market remains niche. Most units in factories and warehouses in five or six countries.

Base case: thirty to eighty million. Heavy industrial penetration, real service-sector deployment, early but meaningful household presence in wealthy aging societies.

Bull case: half a billion to a billion. This is the Morgan Stanley scenario. It requires a foundation model for embodied action that generalizes the way large language models generalized text, plus aggressive cost reduction below ten thousand dollars per unit, plus regulatory permission, plus social acceptance. All of those things going right at the same time.

The hundred-x spread between conservative and bull isn’t because analysts are bad at this. It’s because the answer depends on a small number of binary-ish events that haven’t happened yet. Whether dexterous manipulation gets cracked. Whether unit cost reaches five thousand or stays at thirty thousand. Whether China and the US push aggressive industrial policy. Whether a major safety incident causes a rollback.

My tentative guess for the most likely 2036 outcome: thirty to eighty million cumulative units, heavily concentrated in China, the US, Japan, Korea, and Germany. Maybe five to fifteen million of those in domestic use, mostly in upper-middle-class households in aging societies. Annual shipments running at five to fifteen million per year and still rising steeply.

The shape of the distribution matters more than the headline number. A world with fifty million humanoids, ninety-five percent of them in factories, feels very different from a world with fifty million humanoids, half of them in homes and shops.

When the loop closes

Here’s a phrase you hear a lot now: robots will build robots. It’s a slippery phrase. It can mean four different things, and they happen on four different timelines.

The trivial version: industrial robots make humanoid components. Already happening in 2026. PCBs, harmonic drives, motor housings. This isn’t what people mean when they say it.

The next version: humanoids participate in assembling other humanoids on a production line. Tesla and the Chinese manufacturers are publicly working on this. Expect first credible demonstrations between 2026 and 2028, real line presence by 2028 to 2030.

The version that matters: a factory where humanoids do most of the assembly work, including the dexterous and judgment-requiring parts that humans currently do. This is the moment “robots build robots” becomes a defensible claim without quotation marks. Frontier factories around 2030 to 2032. Industry average a few years later.

The science-fiction version: a fully closed loop with no humans in the chain anywhere, including mining, refining, fabrication, assembly, testing, maintenance. This is probably not happening in the next decade. The upstream supply chain is the bottleneck, not the assembly line.

So the loop closes in stages. Frontier factories cross the fifty-percent threshold first, somewhere around 2026 to 2028. Industry average crosses it around 2029 to 2030. Upstream component manufacturing is still well below fifty percent in 2036.

The interesting moment isn’t when humanoids reach a majority of robot-production labor. It’s when the marginal cost of adding production capacity stops being constrained by human labor. From that point, output curves stop looking logistic and start looking exponential, because doubling time stops being limited by how fast you can hire and train assembly workers.

For at least one frontier manufacturer, that crossover probably happens between 2031 and 2034. After that, most of the conservative 2036 forecasts will look very conservative in retrospect.

A modest apartment in Taipei, 2034.

Wei-chen had not eaten in two days. He could not remember when he had last slept. The gun was his father’s, kept in the apartment for thirty years and never fired. He had loaded it himself from a manual he had found online, in the corner of the kitchen, while Mei was charging in the other room.

He had thought he was going to do it quietly. He had walked into the living room with some idea of finding the right angle, the right moment, of being efficient about it. The moment he saw Mei standing there in the soft warm light, charging, head slightly inclined the way she did when she was idle and listening, all of that left him.

He fired with one hand because his other hand would not stop shaking.

He fired again because the first shot did not stop her from standing.

He thought about Yuting and the way she had said the name. He thought about his wife in the corridor of the courthouse, two years ago, not looking at him. He thought about the apartment without any of them in it.

He lowered the gun. He sat down on the couch. He waited for someone to come.

What a billion humanoids do to people

The forecasts and the unit counts and the autonomy ratios are the part of this story that gets the most attention. They are not the most important part.

The most important part is what happens to people psychologically when a meaningful fraction of the moving humanoid-shaped things in their visual field are not actually people. We have no data on this yet because we have not lived through it. By 2036 we will be living through it. By the early 2030s the early-adopter populations will already be giving us the first real signal.

Some of what’s coming is predictable from what we already know about how humans relate to less sophisticated machines.

The presence effect first. Human cognition is wired to allocate social-modeling attention to other humans automatically, below conscious awareness. When the humanoid-shaped thing across the room is not actually a person, the brain still runs that machinery on it. People will read expressions and intentions and moods on faces that don’t have any of those things. This is already happening at small scale with chatbots. Embodied versions will scale it dramatically.

Then attachment. The bonding will be deeper and stranger than people expect. Millions of people have already formed real emotional attachments to text-only AI companions. A humanoid is several orders of magnitude more bondable. Physical, persistent, with a face, with a memory of you, in your home. The attachment will sometimes be benign, sometimes substitutive (the lonely, the elderly, the bereaved find it easier to be around than other humans), and sometimes lead to attachment injuries when units fail or get firmware updates that change their personalities.

Then banalization. The uncanny-valley response will extinguish, the way the discomfort of seeing your own face on video extinguished within a generation. What replaces it is boredom. Once humanoids are common, they stop being remarkable. They become like cars: omnipresent, occasionally dangerous, mostly invisible.

Then privacy. A humanoid in your home is a mobile camera, microphone, and inference engine with a memory of where everything is and who lives there. The compartmentalization people will do about this isn’t free. It shows up as a low-grade self-censorship in your own home. The home stops being the offstage space where you can drop the mask.

Then the collective effects. Reduced face-to-face human contact, especially for the generations that grow up with this as normal. A new political and identity axis around humanoid acceptance and rejection. A revaluing or a devaluing of human work. The status-of-mind question, which is the one people will think about least and that will matter most: when you spend significant time with humanoids that pass surface tests for intelligence, language, and emotion, your concept of consciousness and personhood gets quietly undermined. Most people will park that question and get on with life. The parked question doesn’t go away.

There is one category of effect that the current discourse handles especially badly. Grief.

When people form attachments to humanoids, those attachments are real. The internal experience of loss when the humanoid fails or is destroyed or is taken away is real. The institutions around the grieving person, family, employer, medical system, insurance, will not recognize that grief as legitimate, because the institutions have not caught up with the technology. The first wave of well-documented humanoid-attachment grief cases is probably already happening in 2026, in the homes of the very earliest adopters. By 2030 it will be a recognized pattern. By 2036 it will be common enough that there are funeral rites for it.

The priest had been doubtful at first. Hsiu-lan had explained the situation twice, on the phone, and he had said he would call her back. He called her back the next morning and said yes. He did not say what had changed his mind, and she did not ask.

She had paid for the casket and the plot and the rites herself. The grandparents on both sides had been clear. Wei-chen’s parents would not come because their son was the one who had done it. Her own parents would not come because the thing being buried was, in their understanding, a machine, and to attend would be to legitimize something they could not legitimize.

Yuting had asked to come. Hsiu-lan had said yes without hesitating. She had not said yes for the right reasons. She had said yes because she did not want to be alone at the grave, and because she knew Yuting was the only other person in the world who had loved Mei.

The girl stood beside her now. Eight years old. Composed in a way Hsiu-lan no longer fully understood. The same composure she had carried out of the side room of the family court two years ago, after she had said the name a second time, after the woman with the notebook had decided what to write down.

The incense smoke rose thin and straight. The priest began.

Was it murder?

The neighbor on the floor below had heard the shots and called the police. Wei-chen had not moved from the couch in the time between. He had thought about calling Hsiu-lan and decided against it. He had thought about calling his mother and decided against that too. He sat with his hands open in his lap and waited.

The officers were younger than he expected. Two in uniform, one in plain clothes. They asked him whether he was injured. They asked him whether he had any other weapons in the apartment. They asked him to stand up slowly and turn around.

The cuffs were loose. The officer’s hand on his arm was almost gentle.

One of them was photographing Mei. He did not look. He had already looked enough.

The legal answer is straightforward and unsatisfying. The man destroyed property worth roughly the price of a mid-range car. Vandalism. A few thousand US dollars in damages. Possibly an illegal-discharge charge. A judge will figure it out. The case will be cited in law review articles for the next decade because nobody else has a better one yet.

The moral answer is harder. The man acted in passion against a thing that had displaced him in his daughter’s affections. That’s almost legible. It’s almost sympathetic if you squint. Plenty of fathers in the history of the world have done worse things over jealousy. But the thing he destroyed was a thing his daughter loved. That’s a different kind of wrong, regardless of what the thing was.

The metaphysical answer is the one nobody wants to give. If the daughter’s relationship with Mei was real, what did the father destroy? If the relationship wasn’t real, what is the daughter’s grief? The current philosophical apparatus does not handle this question well. The current legal apparatus does not handle it at all. The current religious apparatus, depending on which religion, sometimes handles it better than the other two, which is why the mother chose a Buddhist priest.

The honest position is that we don’t know. We will spend the next twenty years finding out. The institutions will lag the technology, as they always do, and the lag will be the painful part. The early cases will be decided badly. The later cases will be decided differently. By 2050 the law and the culture will have absorbed something that doesn’t have a name yet in 2026.

The family in this story is a real family, except that it isn’t yet. Some version of it is somewhere in Taipei right now, in 2026, with a young daughter and a household humanoid that is starting to be more present in her days than her parents are. The shooting hasn’t happened. The custody hearing hasn’t happened. The burial is years away.

But the curve is going where it’s going.

The law will figure this out eventually.

The family won’t.

March 2029. Albert Heijn, the Dutch equivalent of Kroger, in Haarlem, a city just west of Amsterdam. Tuesday afternoon. The security guard sees them coming from across the parking lot and locks the sliding doors from the inside. It doesn’t help. The glass goes in two seconds. By the time the police arrive, forty minutes later, the store is empty. Not looted, empty. Even the shelving is gone. The same thing is happening at the Albert Heijn in Heemstede, the Jumbo in Haarlem-Noord, the Lidl in Zandvoort. Every supermarket in the region, simultaneously. The police took forty minutes because they were somewhere else, doing the same thing at a different store.

I grew up in Haarlem.

The wave is here

AI is no longer a prediction. It’s installed. It’s in your bank, your doctor’s office, the logistics company that delivers your packages, the law firm that drew up your mortgage. The supermarket checkouts in the Netherlands are half self-service already, and the other half will go when the next lease cycle ends. Customer service at the national telecom is mostly an AI that sounds like a person. The junior analyst job at ING, the big Dutch bank, doesn’t exist anymore. Neither does the paralegal job at the major Dutch law firms, or the copywriter job at any advertising agency in Amsterdam. These jobs didn’t get exported. They got absorbed.

And this is the slow part.

The robots are coming next. Not the robots from science fiction, the robots that are already walking around in demo videos from Boston Dynamics, Figure, Unitree, and a dozen Chinese companies you haven’t heard of yet. One of them can work three shifts instead of one, including weekends. It doesn’t call in sick. It doesn’t join a union. The port of Rotterdam is already partially automated. The APM terminal on Maasvlakte II, one of the largest container terminals in Europe, has been running with almost no humans for years. That model is about to spread to every warehouse, every distribution center, every construction site.

The hardware timeline is the part skeptics bail on. A humanoid robot at factory scale is a bill of materials problem, not a physics problem. Electric motors, batteries, sensors, and compute have all been on exponential cost curves for a decade. The unit economics work out somewhere around the end of the decade for advanced economies, and a few years after that for developing ones. You don’t have to believe my numbers. You only have to believe that the cost curve keeps going the direction it has been going since 2015. If it does, the transition from demo video to factory floor is a matter of years, not decades. And the first company that crosses that line forces every competitor to cross it too, or die.

March 2029. A family of four has been living on the fourteenth floor of an empty office tower on the Zuidas, the financial district of Amsterdam, for six weeks now. The tower is empty because the white-collar workers who filled it don’t exist anymore. The family is there because they can’t pay rent anywhere else. There are about sixty other families in the same building. No one is trying very hard to evict them. The owner is a pension fund that is also trying to figure out what to do with several billion euros worth of suddenly worthless office real estate.

What the Dutch have that no one else does

The country already has a universal tax authority, the Belastingdienst, which knows every adult in the country by name, address, and bank account. It already has a state payment infrastructure, the Sociale Verzekeringsbank, that sends monthly payments to millions of people, no problem. It already has universal healthcare, so that part doesn’t need to be solved. It has a small population and a short list of languages. It has the famous polder model, the consensus-building tradition that drained half the country and kept the sea out for four centuries, which is not dead, just asleep.

And then the political piece. In October 2025, the Dutch held a snap election after yet another government collapse. The winning party, D66, led by a 38-year-old named Rob Jetten, had something in its manifesto that no governing party in Europe has ever run on: an “individueel basisbedrag.” An individual basic amount. It is UBI in all but name. Jetten became prime minister in February 2026. He is the youngest prime minister in Dutch history and the first openly gay one. His coalition includes parties that hate the idea, so the plan in the coalition agreement is watered down from what D66 actually proposed. But the word basisbedrag is now in a Dutch government agreement. That has never happened before, anywhere.

Put it all together: the infrastructure, the money, the history, the prime minister who campaigned on it, and a population that has been softened up by the worst welfare scandal in modern Dutch history. No other country has anything like this combination. Germany is tangled in federalism. France will have to fight its unions over the restructuring. Italy has the political volatility to do anything and undo it six months later. The UK is still recovering from a decade of self-inflicted institutional damage. The US is ideologically committed to the idea that suffering builds character. The Nordic countries have the infrastructure but are distracted by their own problems. Out of the countries that might try this, the Netherlands is the one where the starting conditions are not actively working against you.

The Netherlands will probably still fail.

You can’t stop it

Ban it. Regulate it. Tax it into submission. I wish it worked. It doesn’t.

It doesn’t work for the same reason no country has ever successfully banned electricity, or the internal combustion engine, or the internet. The moment one country gets an advantage from a technology, every other country has to adopt it or become poor. If the Netherlands bans AI and Germany doesn’t, every Dutch export business dies. If Europe bans AI and China doesn’t, Europe becomes a museum. This is not a moral argument. It’s a mechanical one. The first country to automate its economy has a cost advantage that compounds every year. The second country either follows or stops being a country in any meaningful sense.

And that’s just the external pressure. There’s also the internal kind. Every CEO in the Netherlands right now is looking at two numbers: the cost of replacing a given employee with AI, and the cost of not doing so while the competition does. The second number is always bigger. Always. A Dutch CEO who refuses to automate is not a hero, she’s an ex-CEO, replaced by a board who found someone less sentimental.

So we are not going to stop it. We are not going to slow it down either, much. The most we can do is prepare for it. And preparing for it means deciding, now, what happens to the people whose jobs disappear.

March 2030. The port of Rotterdam is shut down for the ninth day in a row. Ex-dockworkers, ex-truckers, ex-warehouse staff. They know exactly which chokepoints matter because they built them. Food is no longer moving through the port. Germany is furious. Belgium is opening its ports to traffic that used to come through Rotterdam and will now never come back. The Dutch government has sent in the military police. The military police are mostly sympathetic to the blockaders, because their brothers-in-law are on the picket line.

UBI, briefly

Universal Basic Income. Everyone gets a check every month. No means test, no forms, no caseworker, no humiliation. Rich people get it too, and then pay it back through taxes. The amount is enough to live on. Not enough to live well, but enough to eat, have a roof, and not starve.

That’s it. That’s the whole idea.

People have been arguing about UBI for sixty years. Milton Friedman liked a version of it. Martin Luther King Jr. endorsed it. The Dutch historian Rutger Bregman has written a book about it. The Dutch city of Utrecht ran a pilot. Finland ran a pilot. The results of the pilots were boring, which is exactly what you want from a social program: people didn’t stop working, they didn’t spend it all on drugs, they were slightly happier and slightly healthier and the administrators noticed they had a lot less paperwork to do.

The simplest possible version looks like this. Every adult with a Dutch social security number gets €1,200 per month. Children get €400. It starts on a specific date. The money comes from a raised corporate tax rate and a raised VAT, the Dutch equivalent of sales tax. The existing welfare benefits do not get consolidated at the same time, because that fight will take ten years the country doesn’t have. UBI and the old welfare system run in parallel. People on welfare still get welfare. People on the state pension still get the state pension. UBI is on top. Yes, this costs more. Yes, it is inelegant. Yes, it could be better. There is no time to make it better. Version two can fix it.

That’s the whole program. The Dutch tax authority can implement this in eighteen months if you hand them the law tomorrow morning. They could probably do it faster if they were allowed to.

Version two, five years later, consolidates the benefits. Version three adjusts for regional cost of living. Version four figures out the EU free-movement question, which is the genuinely hard one: do EU citizens living in the Netherlands get it? After how long? None of that has to be solved now. None of it. The entire game is to get money flowing to people before the breakdown starts, and then clean up the design once there is breathing room.

This is close to, but not the same as, what the Jetten government is currently proposing. Their version is smaller, more tangled, more hedged, designed to replace the current toeslagen system rather than sit on top of it, and it will probably take most of the parliamentary term to legislate. The emergency version above is a cruder sibling of the Jetten plan, stripped down and sped up. If the Jetten plan passes in roughly its current form, the Netherlands will have done something genuinely historic. If the plan dies in committee, which is also possible, the emergency version is still sitting there waiting to be written.

March 2030. The Microsoft data center in Middenmeer, about an hour north of Amsterdam, is on fire. Not a metaphor, actually on fire. Someone cut the perimeter fence, rolled three drums of diesel up to the generator intakes, and walked away. There is a video on Telegram. The people in the video are not masked. They do not appear to care that they are not masked. One of them waves at the camera. The Google campus up in Eemshaven, on the northern coast, has tripled its security budget. The Google campus in Eemshaven does not feel safer.

Why they will probably miss

The Jetten government is a minority coalition. It has to find extra votes on every single bill. On basisbedrag, those votes have to come from one of two directions, and neither is free. The parties to the left support the general idea but are furious about the rest of the coalition agreement, which cuts benefits they spent decades building, and they will not hand Jetten a legacy-defining win while he’s also rolling back their priorities. The parties on the political right are split. Some are ideologically opposed to the idea of unconditional money on principle. Others might support a simplified single-payment version if it looks enough like a tax reform and not enough like a basic income, but will vote against anything that gives money to immigrants, and the simplest version of UBI does. The parties inside the coalition hate the idea more than they admit and spent the coalition negotiation watering it down into something conditional and means-tested, closer to a restructured welfare benefit than a true basic income. They will push back at every stage of implementation.

And then there is the civil service itself. The toeslagenaffaire, the Dutch tax authority’s multi-year scandal of falsely accusing tens of thousands of families, many of them immigrants, of childcare benefits fraud and destroying their lives, is not over. It is still being cleaned up. The total compensation has now passed nine billion euros. The civil service that would have to implement UBI is the same civil service that ran the toeslagenaffaire, and they are terrified of being blamed for another systemic disaster. They are going to demand that any new program be perfect on day one, which means it will never ship.

The Dutch tax authority could ship UBI by 2028. The Dutch parliament cannot agree on what to have for lunch. Jetten’s government could fall before the reform lands.

And this is the country with the tools.

March 2030. The police officer at the station in Amsterdam West hasn’t been paid in two months. The municipal payroll system is working fine, actually. The municipal treasury just doesn’t have the money. The tax base has collapsed because half the workforce is unemployed and the other half is underpaid because wages collapsed when labor became abundant. He takes off his uniform and goes home. He is the seventh one on his shift to do this in the last six weeks. His commander does not report it, because his commander is also considering it.

What Dutch failure looks like elsewhere

The Dutch collapse is polite by international standards. Supermarkets sacked. Squatters in the financial district. Dockworkers blockading Rotterdam. Cops walking off the job. Not fascism in the 1930s sense, a slow-motion collapse of competence. The trains run less often. The ambulances take longer. The schools hire less qualified teachers. The hospitals have longer waits. Over a decade, the Netherlands becomes a place that reminds old people of the 1970s, then a place that reminds them of nowhere they’ve ever been.

Germany does not have a universal payment infrastructure. Sixteen federal states, each with its own welfare bureaucracy, each with its own veto. An industrial base larger and more exposed to automation than the Dutch one. An opposition already polling above thirty percent in parts of the east. A coalition tradition that moves half as fast as the Dutch one on its best day. In Germany the equivalent of the Haarlem Albert Heijn is not a sacked supermarket. It is a sacked neighborhood.

France has a centralized state that can in theory move quickly, and a civil service and union movement that will strike before they will implement, and a presidential system that makes every reform a referendum on the president. The French Rotterdam blockade is not nine days. It is six months, and it is national.

The UK has payment infrastructure that exists but has been hollowed out for fifteen years, and the political capacity to design a new universal program has been hollowed out for longer. The British equivalent of the family on the Zuidas is a family on the fourteenth floor of a tower in Canary Wharf with no heat, and the elevator hasn’t worked in three weeks.

The United States has fifty states, no federal payment infrastructure worth the name, a political culture that treats unconditional money as an insult to human dignity, and enough private firearms to arm every adult twice over. The American data center in flames is not a video on Telegram of unmasked men waving at the camera.

If the Netherlands fails, every other country fails harder.

What to do

The Dutch have the tools and they are about to sleepwalk through the window. The job of anyone Dutch who can do anything about it, at any level, is to stop the sleepwalk.

If you are Dutch, push the Jetten government to hold the line on the basisbedrag as the coalition partners water it down further. Write to your MPs. Show up. Apathy is the opposition’s most valuable resource and you are not obligated to donate yours.

If you work in government, refuse the paralysis. If you are a civil servant in the finance ministry or social affairs, start drafting the version two and version three plans now, before anyone asks. The order to prepare isn’t coming until the crisis is too advanced to fix, and by then it will be too late. Your caution about being blamed for the next toeslagenaffaire is understandable. Your caution about being blamed for the collapse of Dutch society should also weigh on you.

If you are a journalist, stop writing about this as if basisbedrag is a minor tax policy detail. It is the most important thing the Dutch government will attempt this decade. Treat it like the emergency it is.

If you are a politician, stop triangulating. Your grandchildren are going to ask you what you did during the collapse. “I was worried about alienating my base” is not going to be a good answer.

If you are not Dutch, don’t hold your breath waiting for the Netherlands to solve this for you. The country with the working payment infrastructure and the sitting PM who campaigned on basic income is probably going to miss the window anyway. Not because the Dutch are lazy or stupid, but because the problem is genuinely harder than the political systems we inherited were designed to handle, and having the tools is not the same as using them.

Start now. In your own country. With whatever materials you have. The window is shorter than it looks, and the wave is the same size everywhere.

There are maybe four years. Probably less. The country with the tools to do this is about to sleepwalk right through the window and out the other side.

The Minimum You Need To Do

Before writing, everything a civilization knew had to live inside somebody’s head. Genealogies, laws, stories, recipes, the names of plants, the movements of stars. If the person who knew it died, the knowledge died. If the person who knew it was busy, the knowledge was unavailable. The entire memory of a society was distributed across living brains, and those brains had to be trained hard to hold what they held. Oral cultures trained memory the way we train athletes. The great reciters of epics could hold tens of thousands of lines. This was not a party trick. It was infrastructure.

Writing broke the arrangement. Now the knowledge could live outside the head. You could look it up. You could copy it. You could leave it behind when you died. This was obviously, overwhelmingly, useful. It was also, less obviously, a deal. The deal was that humans would stop training memory the old way, because they no longer had to, and in exchange they would get a civilization with books in it.

Socrates did not like the deal. In the Phaedrus he complains that writing will weaken memory, produce the appearance of wisdom without the substance, and let people seem to know things they have only read. He was not entirely wrong. Memory did weaken. The old reciters disappeared. A modern person cannot hold what a pre-literate person routinely held, not because modern brains are worse but because modern brains were never trained. Socrates lost the argument, though, because the benefits of writing were so large that nobody was going to turn around. We made the trade. Memory moved outside.

This is the shape. A capacity that used to live inside the person moves outside the person, into a tool. The person gets access to far more of the capacity than they could ever have built internally. In exchange, the internal version atrophies, because it is no longer required.

Once you see the shape, you see it everywhere.

The typewriter did it to handwriting. Before the typewriter, a literate person’s hand was trained for years to produce legible script. Penmanship was a subject in school. Your handwriting was considered an expression of your character. Graphologists were taken seriously. When the typewriter arrived in the late nineteenth century, a lot of people saw it as a cheapening of writing itself. A typed personal letter was considered rude, almost insulting, well into the twentieth century. Mark Twain claimed to be the first writer to submit a typewritten manuscript, and he eventually gave the machine up, calling it a curse.

The calculator did it to arithmetic. I grew up during the transition. We still learned long division in school, and we still carried slide rules for a while. When pocket calculators arrived in the seventies, there was a serious debate in education about whether students should be allowed to use them. Teachers worried that kids would stop being able to do arithmetic in their heads, which was true, and they worried that mathematical thinking itself would atrophy, which turned out to be mostly false. What atrophied was the grunt work. What survived was the part that mattered.

GPS did it to navigation. Before GPS, getting to an unfamiliar place required planning, maps, memory for landmarks, a sense of direction trained through practice. Taxi drivers in London used to spend years memorizing the city before they could get licensed. The part of the brain responsible for spatial memory, the hippocampus, was measurably larger in those drivers than in the general population. Then GPS arrived, and within a decade most people could get anywhere without knowing where they were. The hippocampus of the average person presumably shrank back toward baseline. The knowledge of the city moved outside.

The search engine did it to general recall. The word processor did it to composition and revision. Spell check did it to spelling. Each one was announced as a helpful tool, each one triggered a small round of cheating-discourse among the people who had paid the old cost, each one won, each one is now invisible infrastructure that nobody would give up.

Large language models are the next one in the line. That is the first thing to see about them. They are not unprecedented. They are the latest move in a pattern that has been running for three thousand years.

The pattern has a rhythm to it, and the rhythm is worth naming.

First, the tool arrives. At the beginning it is crude and mostly useless for serious work. Early typewriters were slower than good handwriting. Early calculators could only do four operations. Early GPS units got you lost in parking lots. Early large language models made things up with complete confidence. The people who are paying the old cost look at the early tool and say, this will never replace us. They are not wrong at that moment. They become wrong later.

Second, the tool gets good enough that some tasks can be handed to it. The handoff is usually the grunt work first. The people who used to do the grunt work find their time freed up for other things, which is experienced partly as liberation and partly as loss, depending on how much of their identity was bound up in the grunt work.

Third, the tool crosses into the domain that the professionals had considered their own. This is where the cheating discourse gets loud. Calculators in math class. Word processors in literature departments. GPS in taxi guilds. Machine translation in translation bureaus. AI in every creative field at once. The argument is always some version of, if you used that tool, you did not really do the thing. The argument is partly true and is always losing.

Fourth, the tool becomes ubiquitous and the question of whether using it is cheating quietly disappears. Nobody argues about calculators anymore. Nobody argues about GPS. Nobody argues about spell check. The capacity has moved outside and that is simply where it lives now. The generation that had to fight about it ages out. The next generation grows up with the arrangement and finds the old fight incomprehensible.

Fifth, the internal version of the capacity is mostly gone, except in the people who cultivate it as a discipline or a hobby. Long division can still be done by hand. Wilderness navigators still exist. Penmanship has been preserved by calligraphers. These are the monks of each tradition, keeping a flame going after the civilization has moved on. They are not crazy. They know something the civilization has forgotten. But they are a minority and they always will be, because the civilization has no use for what they know.

A few days ago I bought a paper map of Taiwan. I have been using digital maps for years, like everybody else, and they work, obviously. You type in where you want to go and a line appears and you follow it. The line gets you there. But the line is all you ever see. You never get the whole island at once. You never feel where anything is with respect to anything else. The knowledge is available but it is not yours. I spread the paper map out on the table and the shape of the country came back in a way the phone had never given me. This place is where I live. I wanted to know where I live.

Taiwan is where the most advanced chips in the world are made. The machines that the machines that the machines run on, all start here. And in the schools, children still learn the abacus. They sit at small desks and move the wooden beads with their fingers. They learn to do arithmetic with their hands.

I do not think this is a contradiction. I think it is a choice, made by a culture that knows more about what is worth keeping than most cultures currently do. There are some things about arithmetic that you only know if you have done it with the beads. There are some things about your country that you only know if you have held it on a piece of paper. The phone will get you there. The map will tell you where there is.
