In other words, when not everything is perfectly curated, it yields a result that is surprisingly better (more interesting, richer, unexpected) than if every last thing is thoughtfully, actively chosen.

In the TV show, he designed a restaurant, and the owner insisted on using these dark wood bar stools that were a very different vibe than his mood board. At first, Jeffrey was like, these are hideous. But the owner (who was otherwise hands-off with the design) could not be swayed. On the day of the install, the refined, light, airy concept came to physical fruition, layer by layer. And when the bar stools were placed, they wound up being the thing that brought the room together. They gave the space soul and made it feel like it had been there a long time.

I’ve always remembered this concept, and I keep thinking about it. How leaving things to chance, being open minded, and allowing (rather than actively choosing) can unlock incredible outcomes, not only in design, but in relationships, career, and other areas of your life. I experienced this for the first time by accident fairly recently.

Let me explain.

Wow!

And she didn’t apologize or make excuses when she told me. She owned it. As I listened to her confidently, pragmatically list out how she spends her time on a typical day, I was amazed. And impressed. I learned that she values time with family above everything, and (having spent years building a business that affords her the option), she now chooses to spend time with her kids and partner.

I always think about this: the way you spend your days is the way you spend your life.

Prioritizing what you value in your everyday life is such a simple concept, and yet surprisingly hard to put into practice.

It took me decades to admit that for me, an ideal typical day includes things like puttering around the house and garden, researching and designing things, and working on creative projects. That is most certainly not the life of a CEO, someone working a 9-5, or anyone with a remotely traditional work setup.

But it’s 2026, and one of the greatest things of living right now is that it’s easier than ever to custom tailor a career (and life).

Over the past twenty odd years, I’ve gone through various phases of allowing the freedom I desire and fighting it. Now, I’m fully embracing a quiet life.

These are the things I’ve intentionally designed into (and out of) my work life.

I ordered a bunch of clothes and shoes, and below I’m trying it all on.

My opinions on almost everything changed when I looked at the footage. I was so much more critical when I looked in the mirror in real time. And I find the same to be true with interiors. I think much more clearly when I look at a picture than when I’m standing in the room trying to figure it out.

Fit, to me, is probably the most important criteria for clothes. I like things to look intentional. Fit does most of the that heavy lifting and I think extremely well fitting clothing is the key to simple outfits that look complete… pieces that stand on their own and don’t need to be styled. I’ve always been a very item focused shopper.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen women trying on things they don’t want or that don’t work. And that is a huge part of building a great wardrobe. Arguably the biggest part of it, at least for me. The two things that have led me in the past to build a great wardrobe were:

1. Putting in the effort to try tons of things on

2. Having the discipline to send back things that aren’t great

So here is me doing just that.

Tldr: I bought a bunch of clothes, and they’re all linked below.

Yes, my current wardrobe is miniscule. And yes, I’ve learned that I love having very few things - I’m thinking (as of now) that I would like to keep my wardrobe quite edited. But not in a neutral capsule wardrobe way. Pretty much the opposite. I want to swap my neutral basics (that honestly aren’t that great) for colorful, fun ones that also happen to be practical and functional.

So, how will I accomplish this?

The same process I used when I built a really great wardrobe years ago in LA: curate options online, try them on at home, see how everything works together, send back what doesn’t fit, and repeat until I have clothes I love that make sense for my lifestyle. Basically, I have to do a lot of trial and error and be ruthless about sending things back.

I ordered quite a few pieces for my first round of try-ons. I’ll show you when they arrive, but some of these are on sale or low stock, so here’s my shopping list:

Colorful crewnecks

I got this t-shirt in red and blue. Some of my favorite tees of all time are from Zara. The ones like this in thick cotton last years and years. I bought medium, so they’re somewhat fitted but not pulling or tight. A more put-together, refined look (also got some fun oversized tees further down).

Nondescript, old school sneakers

I like the simple white sneakers people wore in the 60’s. I wish Keds and other brands would recreate the vintage versions, so I was very happy to see these at COS.

Jeans

Most of what I’m shopping for is colorful and textured, but I also need basics like jeans. And I think this is an area where I will benefit from being open-minded. I’m going to try some different cuts and lengths. As long as it looks timeless and classic, I’m open. I’d love to find jeans that aren’t super tight. Excited to put these on.

Red suede shoes

Ok, these might be hideous. Or they could be great. I think I will love them or hate them. Instantly. I have to see them in person to know.

I prefer shoes that do not have a contrasting sole. I want the sole and the rest of the shoe to blend together and look streamlined.

And, as I shared in my wardrobe video, I think suede shoes add SO much to an outfit. That’s why when I owned Marais, most of the shoes were suede. I miss Marais btw. I mean, I don’t want to operate a business, but I miss the shoes! If anyone wants to take it over / relaunch it, lmk.

Something pink

Pink is maybe my favorite color to wear.

Like the red suede shes, this could be a great layering outfit-making piece; or it could be a disaster. Either way, I will show you next week.

White jeans, not too tight

These look promising. One of the easiest ways for me to feel like my outfit is special is to simply not wear any blue denim or black pieces.

When an outfit is all white and/or colored items, it just looks very fresh and out of the ordinary to me.

Textured sweater

Love the color, texture, and neckline. I got a large.

Jewelry - a first!

I almost never wear jewelry, but I think something like this set of bracelets would really jazz up simple t-shirt and jeans outfits. Dainty jewelry isn’t for me - if I’m going to wear something I’d like it to feel substantial.

I do have a tennis necklace, which is kind of a life saver item when I need to dress up a look. So classic and timeless and can be worn with literally anything.

A short trench

I like a hip length jacket. A long one gets in the way and drags when I’m getting into the car, picking up after my dog, etc etc. And a cropped one isn’t warm and doesn’t feel countryside appropriate? Not sure if that is landing, but it makes sense to me. For my everyday go-to jackets, I prefer hip length.

This olive shade will also tone down bright colors.

Oversized, colorful tees

These are such fun colors and add volume and softness to a look. And such a different vibe than the short sleeved tees I got.

I love the pants they’re wearing - they’re mens. I would have ordered them but they weren’t available in Europe. These are a similar vibe.

Maybe you’ve had kids or your body is a different shape or you’ve moved to a different climate or transitioned your career. Maybe all of those things?

1. For me (and I think most people), style is developed through trial and error. I wasn’t born with a defined sense of style. I found it simply by iterating.

2. I’ve done this before. Not just for myself, but for my mom.

As I write this, I’m sitting on the borrowed sofa in our living room, a huge chocolate brown sectional. It’s a piece I wouldn’t ever consider buying, but honestly it’s fine. Like the other rooms in our home, most of the furniture in our living room is temporary. We’ll eventually get our own sofa and swap our borrowed coffee table for a cozy ottoman (I’d like to make one).

We’ll add a pair of arm chairs in the blank space across from the sofa.

We’ll find a way to store the vacuum and household miscellany piled up and in clear view under the staircase.

We’ll get roman shades or curtains on the windows and a thick wool rug on the floor (hopefully an old one). We’ll paint the room a color that will soak up the soft, lovely light. My instinct is to stray from the warm white (Farrow and Ball Pointing?) I envision in most other rooms in our house.

Long story short, we have a lot to do in this room (and all of the others). And since moving in, it’s been hard to feel at home in a house where very little of the furniture is ours and where I’ve been constantly brainstorming how to pull the space together. It’s taken up a lot of unproductive mental capacity; I think a lot of us can fall into the trap of obsessing without making much progress. Whether over interiors, clothing, or another area of our lives.

But over the past week, I’ve made a big mental shift. Our house suddenly feels like a home. And although I did get a few small, impactful things (throw pillows for the sofa, a bench in our garden), I think the shift comes from something else.

Years ago, when 70k people followed my personal Instagram, I decided to stop posting pictures of myself on the internet.

I went cold turkey, because I’d hit a wall. I was way off track (you’ll see why), and I suppose removing my image from the internet was my way of attempting to cleanse my palette.

She makes her home 1% better every day by doing small projects like power washing a planter, painting something - even just a door, or styling a book shelf.

Some of the before and afters are very satisfying, while others (like weeding a planting bed) are simply tasks that have to happen to make way for more exciting future transformations (like planting the actual plants). But the momentum of doing little projects one by one builds up into huge progress, even in a week - let alone a year.

I just love the idea of making something 1% better each day. You could apply it to anything. I’ve been sharing her Instagram with clients that are launching products or companies.

We’ve lived in our house for a little over two months now, and in an effort to get some momentum going, I’m giving her method a shot. Not every day, but consistently.

Here are my first three projects:

1. Set up a little greenhouse

This is the best 80 bucks I’ve ever spent.

For me, this is the perfect starter greenhouse to get my gardener bearings. There is space to grow all of the herbs and salad greens we eat, have a very small cutting garden, and grow a few special veggies that are hard to buy here. Oh, and start some seeds to plant in the garden too.

I’m going for long, healthy, shiny hair like this:

I kept having to cut my hair at shoulder length, because I was getting breakage and split ends. Now my hair is much healthier.

Taking this biotin supplement made a visible difference in my hair health within a few weeks. I don’t think it matters which brand you get as long as it’s good quality and a similar dose.

I use hair product that both penetrates the hair shaft and seals it
When my hair kept breaking off, I stopped using curl cream and other hair products and decided to test out individual ingredients to figure out which ones actually make a difference for me. I found that most of the ingredients in my store bought hair products didn’t actually penetrate the hair shaft and improve my hair’s health - they just coated the hair and made it look better.

After quite a bit of trial and error I am using the following. There is zero product build up, no white cast if you brush your hair, and my hair is much, much healthier.

Step 1: scalp moisture: 1 pump Hyaluronic B5 in my palm and use my finger tips to apply it directly to my scalp in areas where I used to get dermatitis - crown and hair line.

Step 2: hair serum: 1 pump Hyaluronic B5, 2-3 drops jojoba oil, 3 drops sunflower seed oil: I mix them in my palm and then apply to the bottom few inches of my hair, then use what’s left on mid lengths. I now make a batch of this in a little glass bottle, so I can just put about 2 droppers and don’t need to pull out all three ingredients. I am also going to try Squalene oil, but haven’t gotten it yet.

Step 3: flaxseed hair gel (recipe below): I apply about 2 tsp to my hair ends - as much as they can hold, and whatever’s left on mid lengths with a tiny bit up to the roots.

Everyone says flaxseed gel only lasts for about a week and that you have to refrigerate it. I found it lasts for more than a month and I don’t see any evidence that it spoils or stops working if it isn’t refrigerated. So I generally make a batch once a month. Any more than that would feel too high maintenance for me.

How to make flaxseed hair gel
Makes enough for like 5 applications - a good amount for a first try:
- Boil 1.5 cups water - add a sprig of rosemary for hair growth
- Add 3 Tbsp flaxseeds
- Turn heat to med-low for about 5 minutes until the water becomes a gel texture
- Strain flax seeds using a metal seive
- Let cool and then transfer to a bottle you can squeeze it out of

Tip 1: Apply product for the results you want - not the hair texture you have
Mara posted this brilliant reel showing exactly how I approach hair product. I do not scrunch product into my curly hair. I smooth it through like so, because I have more than enough volume and am more interested in making it smooth and shiny and relaxed (as opposed to emphasizing / amping up the curls).

Tip 2: How wet your hair is when you apply product makes a big difference
This is a big point of discussion and debate within the curly hair community. I do the opposite of what everyone recommends, which is to apply product to sopping wet hair. This makes sense, because it keeps your curl intact (full wetness is what refreshes a curl’s shape). But I found that if I do that, most of the product winds up dripping off my hair.

What I do: After washing my hair, I get out of the shower, finger comb my hair, and squeeze the water out of it. I let it air dry a little so it’s maybe 5% - 10% dry (put on lotion and do stuff while you’re waiting). Then I apply product. I spray a little water around my face and ends of hair after the product is in. Just enough to allow the curls to reshape. I use this white spray bottle.

Dry
I air dry my hair most days, but use a diffuser when I need it to dry faster. I’ve found that it works best to only diffuse the top half of my hair - the roots are what take the longest to dry, and I don’t want to dry out my fragile hair tips. I don’t move my hair at all while I’m diffusing it - like, I don’t lift up sections to get under it. You could even pin your hair in the shape you want while you do this. I just move the diffuser around my scalp on the lowest wind setting and either medium or low heat.

Yes I brush my curly hair
In the evening, I brush my hair with this beautiful hair brush that I’ve had for ten years and think it is completely worth the investment. A boar bristle brush like this stimulates your scalp and improves hair health by moving oils down into hair lengths and tips. My hair gets ratty and gross on the second and third day if I don’t brush it.

Reviving second day hair:
I usually finger comb my hair and apply 1 dropper of my homemade serum (or about half of what I use after showering) to the tips. If my hair looks really bad, I’ll spritz it with this water bottle. Sometimes just the hair around my face.

I’ll have to share a separate issue about how I healed my dermatitis-ish scalp issues, but for now, suffice to say that washing my hair more often was one of the most effective remedies. I try not to go more than 2 days between washes now, and wash it every other day when I can muster the strength.

I know how tricky curly/wavy hair is, and I so feel for you if you are trying to figure out how to wear your natural texture. I think a lot of this comes down to experimentation - and you have to just try things. We are all different. And I am still figuring it out bit by bit. This is my top kitchen essential. Maybe my top home essential. Truly nothing improves my experience cooking more - and speeds up prep a ton.

I do pretty much all of my kitchen prep with this 8” chef’s knife. Comes in black, birch, and white.

The only other knives I use when I’m cooking are a pairing knife and a bread knife. I highly recommend buying 1-3 high quality knives.

Alternatively, if you’re not feeling the Staub or Le Creuset level price tag, I think this is the best deal for a set, $189 for all of the above. I’d trust the quality.

THE PERFECT HEATHER GREY SWEATSHIRT

An absolute essential in any wardrobe. I wear mine constantly.

GEMSTONES AND VELVET

A velvet envelope clutch encrusted with gem stones. I couldn’t love it more. I promise this is insanely versatile. The green is so dark, it reads as black - but gives a richness to your outfit’s color palette.

TINY VASES

Whenever I bring a bouquet of flowers home, I reserve a couple of stems to put in a little vase by the sink or on my nightstand. These little bud vases would be the absolute perfect vessel for them - their narrow opening make a single stem look beautiful. I’d use a set (or two) on the dining table with candles, so pretty. I like small, low flowers on the table.

WARDROBE WORKHORSE

To me, a perfect barn coat has a torso slightly longer than the sleeves. It has a textured, tonal collar (too much contrast makes it harder to style). It’s made of a heavy, durable material that holds its shape and reads as structured. This one checks every box. Also comes in tan and red.

THE NEW OLAPLEX

After one use, my hair is noticeably shinier, healthier, has more defined curls, and I lost way less hair in the shower.

Here’s how you use it: once a week, spray it onto your hair, wait ten minutes (or as long as overnight), shampoo and style your hair as usual.

I have been looking for a way to make my hair shinier, and this is it. I’m also going to try their shampoo and conditioner, which I’ll report on after I’ve used them. I introduce one new product at a time, so that if there are good results, I know where they came from.

Nothing could improve the color, texture, or silhouette of this sweater.

90’S GWYNETH VIBES

We all know this shade of green.

Great price for such an elevated piece from a chic brand. Btw, their sale section is worth a perusal.

ON-THE-GO PERFUME

This beautiful, luxuriously heavy little object is only slightly larger than a quarter. I love the idea of getting a solid perfume for travel or to keep in your bag. But truthbetold I have been wearing it daily. It smells so fresh and lovely. And even though it’s solid, I can still dab a little on my hair, which I always want to smell good.

YOUR FALL INVESTMENT PIECE

The suppleness of this leather. It looks so soft! The dainty collar and oversized buttons are perfect twists that make the classic silhouette modern and special. This is a forever piece. Let me know if you get it.

One of my favorite interior designers, Ilse Crawford, is adamant that a bare minimum of 15% of a home’s square footage should be dedicated to storage.

15 percent!

Wow, that’s way more than I would have thought. Our new house has one teeny tiny closet. Literally, that’s it. And, as you’ll see, I have some ideas for remedying that stat immediately. And making our home beautiful and functional in the process.

This is Ilse Crawford’s loft in London. How fun. Guess how much it would cost to build the bookcases in the frame?

Based on some quick, light research, I’d say under $200 including paint. What?! I have been living in the dark, and in case you have been too I am here to enlighten us.

Last week, I watched a Youtube video about building custom bookshelves that completely changed how I’m thinking about interior design.

The video in question showed me (or did it trick me? We shall see) that it is indeed doable and dare I say more affordable to build custom storage than it is to buy it. The materials will probably cost less than buying components from IKEA. Like, you can build an entire floor to ceiling wall of bookshelves for a little over a hundred bucks. Who knew!

I’ve gathered references for custom building simple, beautiful storage in our entry (practical solutions for the inevitable pile up of coats and shoes), bedroom closet, books (I need to see books everywhere - books are like art), and more.

Entry

The easiest and lowest cost opportunity to create storage is in our little boot room. To get my bearings, I first saved images of entries I’m drawn to - without regard to functionality.

Most of the images were of entries much larger than what we are working with. But what I like about them I think can still be incorporated: A small number of items (makes the room feel both inviting and finished while feeling airy and uncluttered), oversized pieces, some greenery, a console table, a lamp, a piece of art.

I love a piece of art that covers an entire wall. Even a textile hung without the frame can have just as much impact (and at a much lower cost). Or, buy a vintage frame at a charity shop or flea market. You can find huge ones for a great deal and simply replace the art inside. I am keeping my eye out for big ones.

Since our boot room is small, and the door and windows make two of the walls unbuildable, I don’t think the layout will allow us to actually build a closet with doors.

Instead, I’m thinking of throwing up peg rails, which are probably more functional anyway. Less fussy.

And a bench underneath, so shoes are tucked away. Realistically, shoes will pile up, and if they have a roof over them - so to speak - they look much better to me.

I like that these shelf brackets create cubby-like sections for hanging coats.

In my childhood home in Telluride, we had literal cubbies like this. With four kids in our family, it kept things in order. Everyone knew where to drop their things off when they came into the house and could easily find them when we were going out.
