I hate the way people hate. It used to be sex sells. Love was a close second. Horror had its season. But now the only genre that charts is hate — hate on the topic du jour, hate on strangers, hate on the successful, hate on anyone who dares to hold a different angle on the same tired conversation.

We hate the weather like it’s a personal insult. We hate data centers as if they’re plotting against us. We hate systems, corporations, institutions, and then — for dessert — we hate each other. Hate has become the default emotional setting, the background radiation of daily life.

The hate economy is thriving. It’s the only market with infinite liquidity. Politics is untenable because hate is the only product left on the shelf. Coexisting is unbearable because hate is easier than nuance. And somewhere along the way, hate became a kind of currency; something you accumulate, invest, diversify. You build a hate‑wealth portfolio that rivals billionaire status, except instead of yachts you get dopamine hits and a sense of moral superiority.

Everyone is rich in resentment now. Hate is the new social capital. The more you have, the louder you get. The louder you get, the more you’re rewarded. And the cycle keeps spinning, because nothing sells faster than outrage, and nothing spreads quicker than contempt.

I don’t hate everything. I hate that everything has been converted into fuel for the hate machine. I hate that we’ve turned emotional bankruptcy into a badge of honor. I hate that the simplest human act — coexistence — now feels like an extreme sport.

And I hate that hate has become the one thing we all agree on.

Haters rise in the morning and hate the fact that they can’t hate before coffee. This irritates them deeply, the biological limitation, the forced pause, the brief window in which they must exist without a target. They resent the coffee maker for needing electricity, resent the electricity for coming from a grid owned by a corporation, resent the corporation for being insensitive to the environment, and resent the environment for requiring sensitivity in the first place.

Then they prepare their coffee anyway and hate every sip. They hate the mug for being chipped. They hate the handle for being too small. They hate the temperature for being wrong in a way that feels personal. They hate the fact that they are drinking something produced by a supply chain that has almost certainly harmed someone, somewhere, somehow, and this thought comforts them, because it gives them more to hate.

Haters check the weather next. They hate the forecast. They hate the sky. They hate the sun for being smug and the clouds for being indecisive. They hate the wind for touching them without consent. They hate the air quality index because it reminds them that breathing is now a political act.

Then comes the commute — a buffet of hate. They hate the road for existing, the traffic for moving, the other drivers for being alive. They hate the speed limit because it’s too slow, and they hate the police for enforcing it, and they hate the government for creating it, and they hate themselves for caring.

At work, haters hate the login screen. They hate the password requirements. They hate the two‑factor authentication because it implies they are not trustworthy. They hate the system outage that happens at the worst possible moment, and they hate the IT department for sending an email that begins with “We apologize for the inconvenience,” because they know no one is actually sorry.

Lunch is a hate‑adjacent event. They hate the menu. They hate the ingredients. They hate the nutritional label for judging them. They hate the price. They hate the person in front of them for ordering slowly. They hate the person behind them for breathing loudly.

By afternoon, haters have accumulated enough emotional capital to feel wealthy. They scroll social media to diversify their portfolio. They hate celebrities for existing. They hate influencers for influencing. They hate experts for knowing things. They hate amateurs for not knowing things. They hate opinions that differ from theirs, and they hate opinions that match theirs because they feel unoriginal.

Evening is where the hate compounds. They hate the news. They hate the anchor’s tone. They hate the headline font. They hate the political party they oppose, and they hate the political party they support, and they hate the fact that politics exists at all.

Before bed, haters perform a final ritual: they hate themselves for not hating enough today. They vow to do better tomorrow.

I know, because I lived behind one for nearly a decade.

Others close so quietly you never hear them; a screen, a feed, a low and ceaseless hum that calls itself connection. I know that one too. I’ve come to think of them as the same sentence spoken in two dialects: the clang and the whisper. The overt and the invisible. And once you’ve heard captivity in both, you can’t stop noticing how much of a life is just the long walk back, toward being present inside your own existence.

Some of you found the harder work: the stories, the essays, a memoir I’m writing one difficult sentence at a time. It can feel like different writers.
