At 20, I had just moved to Los Angeles with no plan, only the hope of escaping a life that made me miserable.

I’ve spent the last nine years “figuring it out”. Trying new things, working a bunch of different jobs, falling in and out of love, traveling the world, and meeting all types of people. To see how far I’ve come makes me so proud.

I think of the girl who packed up her RAV4 a month before turning 20 to drive across the country, and I feel so connected to her still. She was brave and honest and so sure of herself. But she was also so lost. I had hit rock bottom so hard that I felt like I had nothing left to lose.

In nine years, I’ve escaped my misery and then some. I’ve found joy, peace, confidence, and a lust for life that I never knew existed.

I spent a lot of my adolescence convinced I wouldn’t live past 21, and here I am at 29 praying I live past 100.

I have an interesting relationship with getting older. As a woman, there are obvious societal pressures to be living a certain way as you approach your thirties, a perceived loss of value, a quote-unquote “ticking clock” I’m supposed to be beating. But if I’m being honest, I don’t really give a shit.

I want to do it all, and I think I can.

I have an unwavering trust now that I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be. I know my value only continues to grow as I become wiser, smarter, and braver.

The most beautiful thing about getting older is that it’s a never-ending process of discovering who you are. I feel strong in my knowledge of who I am at my core, that solidified piece of me that lives in my chest. What I want, on the other hand, is always shifting.

I am an ever-evolving, changing Rubik’s Cube in human form, a river flowing endlessly downstream, molding itself around the rocks and boulders that enter its path. To me, that’s really exciting.

I used to feel stuck because I thought there was one thing I needed to become, and if I didn’t accomplish that, everything would crumble around me. What I’ve learned is that THAT is the suffering. To feel trapped, disconnected from yourself, afraid to take a leap.

So now, at 29, I feel free. I trust that I’m on my own unique journey, and wherever it leads is right. If I can maintain happiness and freedom as I walk along this path, then I am the most successful person in the world.

The goal is to experience. To connect deeply with people. To learn as much as possible. To see the world through as many eyes as I can.

And I am so lucky to be doing just that.

Here’s to the last year of my twenties, and to enjoying the evolution

Change Your Mind Change Your World

My life began to change when I realized that my mind controlled my world, not the other way around.

Hana Terrell

My life began to change when I realized that my mind controlled my world, not the other way around.

Your perspective shapes your reality. Your environment influences your life. And more often than not, your hand is on the lever when it comes to how you feel.

It’s simple, but understanding it doesn’t change everything overnight. Growth isn’t a grand epipha…
