Had a happy mail day with a yarn delivery, and just had to cast on some pumpkin hats!

This week I have been enjoying re-listening to Ashes of Betrayal, book 18 of my favorite detective series of all time: The DCI Harry Grimm series by David J. Gatward.

In this installment, Harry and the team are grieving the loss of a close friend and another who moved away. At the same time, Harry and Grace are house-hunting for a home together!

When a thoroughly charred body is found in the ashes of a burned down warehouse belonging to a coffee business, Harry and the team are soon busy searching not only for a killer but also for the missing coffee business owner. A second charred body found after a building fire in Scotland is later linked to this case, and Harry finds himself managing a case involving two different countries with limited manpower and resources…

I did manage to get the shawl off the needles last weekend, and wrapped up the finishing this week.

Really having mixed feelings about being finished with this project. It’s an accomplishment, but I also miss it already!

A couple of years in the making, with various smaller knitting projects coming and going, this brioche and two-color garter stitch shawl has been a constant for me through some big life changes.

I absolutely love knitting this pattern, relaxing into the flow between managing multiple technical brioche lace charts per row and the simple relaxation of the two-color garter stitch sections. And I can’t get enough of the yarn, the rich sunrise colors, the merino and cashmere fibers, the softness and warmth of it.

Yes, I’m feeling good about finishing this shawl, and looking forward to giving it to my niece… And yes, I’m also sure I’ll be casting on another one at some point, perhaps even soon…! 🧶🥰

2| Nature…

Just look at those creamy clouds rolling up over the mountain tops like foaming waves…! Definitely swooning!

3| The Pets…

Welcome to mid-to-late-summer morning coffee + knitting hangouts with Sunny and Tango - the keeping cool version!

It has been so hot and humid, even early in the morning lately, that my two intrepid explorers have been mostly focused on keeping cool.

Insider’s note: Sunny loves a good chew, she is quite a power chewer and her bone is the only item she sometimes feels possessive of. Tango, in true younger sibling fashion, enjoys teasing her over it! As you can see, he was getting ready to hop down off his perch and go stir up some shenanigans…!

4| Funny…

This is so true for me! I can usually feel the stress uncoiling and falling away as I knit. Such bliss! It’s probably one of the reasons why I sometimes “just one more row” myself into midnight knitting when I should be sleeping!

5| What I’m reading while knitting …

This week I have been deep in the middle of re-listening to Silent Ruin, book 14 of my favorite detective series of all time: The DCI Harry Grimm series by David J. Gatward.

In this story, Harry and the team unravel disturbing reports from a confused elderly gentleman who was terrified in a castle ruin late at night and uncover a dastardly murder-kidnapping/blackmail scheme!

At first all is utter chaos and confusion as seemingly unrelated and confounding events encroach from all quarters. But finally all the pieces start to come together through the instinctive and persistent investigations of Harry and his gifted team…!

Okay, this weekend is THE weekend for finishing this shawl, I swear!

There is literally only one more full [brioche] row to do and then the bind off!

Finishing involves weaving in just a couple of ends and then blocking. Surely I can do this in one weekend?! We’ll see…

This week I took a break and picked Claire’s Braintree Shawl back up. I do love the slightly different look of the brioche textured edging on the right side vs the wrong side…

Finished my 40 rows of stockinette and ready to add the pocket stitches!

This pattern has you add additional stitches where the pockets will go, and then keep them on hold as you finish the body of the sweater. Then you go back and knit on the pockets! So genius!
