Another interview ! Welcome !!

It’s been too long since the last one, but this one feels very timely. At least for me personally, as I need reminding (big time) of the simple daily tools that make all the difference wellness-wise. Don’t judge me, I’ve been living the life in New Zealand for a year, and the cumulative effects of a fairly generous consumption of wine (and beer) has resulted in a somewhat poorer complexion. But no regrets, ha.

In general, though, I’m far more interested in the people who keep wellness simple. Give me someone with 2 or 3 top-tier weekly habits over another miracle powder from the painfully saturated wellness market any day. I think Carys really embodies that way of living.

Without further ado, let me introduce you to Carys Dedenhardt, who is an all-around wellness practitioner. A holistic nutritionist, regenerative lifestyle practitioner, health coach and whatnot. Carys is someone who understands how the gut-skin connection works and how imbalances in the body can impact inflammation, complexion and overall wellbeing etc. And look at her. She glows. Which makes her exactly the type of person whose wellness secrets I want to know. Spoiler: we both love sauna and Activist mānuka honey.

Her life is also objectively very, very cool. Carys splits her time between Copenhagen, my favourite city on earth, and Mexico City.

How did you arrive at what you’re doing?

Growing up I was always doing something with my hands, pottery, drawing, playing outside, helping my mom in the kitchen and then eventually cooking my own recipes. And then into my adolescence I got interested in fashion, actually making clothes, and continued in school going more in that direction. But somewhere along the way my curiosity about the body, living healthier and focusing on my own digestive issues took over and that led me to holistic nutrition. From there everything else branched out naturally: breathwork, regenerative living, natural cycles, interior spaces, making objects.

Looking back it all makes sense. The hands-on making, the love of beauty and craft, the food curiosity, and somehow it all coheres into something that feels very much mine.

What does your (real not ideal) day-to-day look like in practice when it comes to food and wellness?

Real version?

Some days it’s scrambled eggs and leftover white rice with whatever’s in the fridge. I keep things stocked (things like bone broth, bee pollen, matcha, eggs, lemons, coconut milk, ground beef in the freezer, rice, etc ) so even on a low-effort day I’m not starting from zero. I try not to moralize food. I am often rushing so on those days, I eat simply. The consistency for me is less about hitting some perfect protocol and more about having good foundations so the baseline is already decent without thinking too hard about it.

What’s something you do consistently that you think actually makes a difference long term?

Sleep!

My wind-down routine is non-negotiable, I go offline, use my red light device, shower, do my skincare, put on brown noise or a fan, read, and then sleep with an eye mask and earplugs. I really believe that how you sleep shapes everything else, your skin, your mood, your digestion, your capacity to show up.

It’s the thing I protect most fiercely.

You often speak about the gut–skin connection. What are you focusing on most at the moment?

Right now I’m focusing on consistency over intensity, supporting the gut with fermented foods, bone broth, hydration and foods I know that I digest well and work well for me. I think people oscillate between doing a lot and doing nothing, and what actually moves the needle is somewhere in the middle: showing up daily with the basics.

Your top five wellness products?

1. My red light device: I use it almost every evening, or whenever a specific part of my body needs some attention.

2. Activist Manuka products (internally and topically): immunity support, a breakfast and snack staple, skin healing. The whole line is perfect.

3. Sauna / my sauna blanket: I will always love an at-home sweat. The sleep after is unreal.

4. Matcha everyday: ceremonial & organic only :)

5. Bee pollen: a permanent fridge fixture. I love bee products in general and this one earns its place on taste alone, but the benefits (immune support, protein, enzymes) make it a true staple.

Is there something you do for your health that might seem unexpected but works for you?

Scent as a nervous system tool.

I travel with incense and essential oils everywhere. Bodha, Basium oils, Armenian papers, Peace in the Wild sprays. It sounds indulgent but scent is one of the fastest ways to shift your state. I use it intentionally to signal transitions: morning, wind-down, focus. It’s become a beautiful anchor for me.

If money wasn’t a factor, what would you invest in for your health?

More at-home tools for sure, a full sauna being the top of the list. I try to get into the infrared (find me 2-5 times a week in my sauna blanket) or traditional sauna weekly and I feel the difference so clearly so I really want one in my home. I would also love to have a full home water filtration system. Beyond that, probably more time in nature and access to more regeneratively grown food. These investments I think matter most at a foundational level.

What is your least healthy habit?

Probably not drinking enough plain water. I drink so much tea and broth and matcha that I sometimes get to the end of the day and realise I haven’t had much actual water.

When I am based in Mexico City I also love a (low sugar) mezcalita. ;) or in Copenhagen a glass of natural wine in the sun. Some might argue both of these habits are part of a balanced and healthy life though.

Is there a treatment or practice you keep coming back to, no matter what?

Breathwork.

It’s the one thing I’ve come back to again and again regardless of where I am or what I have access to. You can do it anywhere, it costs nothing, and the effect is immediate. I constantly find myself returning to it as a personal practice to support my nervous system and also gain clarity.

What are the key beauty products in your routine? Morning and night.

Morning is pretty minimal, I keep it simple so I’m not overwhelming my routine first thing. Tongue scrape, oil pull with coconut oil and Living Libations happy gum drops, splash of cold water, usually just a mist then a moisturising cream (sometimes I apply Saltyface for a little glow). + daily matcha and lots of Activist manuka which i think both count as skincare from the inside.

Night is where I invest more: red light, a proper double cleanse including Best Skin Ever, I ALWAYS shower before bed so post shower I moisturise with body oil (Rudolphcare, Activist, Ara’kai, or almond oil with essential oils added) and then other key skincare products are lots of Rudolph Care skincare at the moment (a Danish brand I am loving), Activist face oil, Aurea, and hands moisturized with necessaire before sleep.

Do you notice a direct link between what you eat and how your skin behaves?

100%. It’s one of the clearest feedback loops I have. Sugar and alcohol show up on my skin within days, think dullness, congestion, puffiness. When I’m eating simply: good proteins, fats, lots of fresh seasonal produce from the farmer’s market, bone broth, my skin is visibly calmer. It’s one of the reasons I take the gut–skin connection so seriously.

What are you drawn to right now in terms of pieces or brands? Top three products on your radar?

I’m always keeping an eye on what’s coming out of the clean beauty space & and natural living space. I’ve always been quite intentional about the objects I use every day feeling beautiful, there’s something about using and viewing (fewer) high quality objects created from all natural materials at home that feels very grounding.

Brands / pieces I am loving:

• Monks deodorant, all 3 scents are 10/10

• Matcha + matcha accessories (and other japanese ceramics). I love AM Matcha.

• Living Libations: everything they make

Could you share your top hidden Mexico City and Copenhagen recs ?!! Thanks.

• In Mexico City: book in at one of the Barragán spaces. It will rearrange something in you. Beyond that, find a good market (el 100 on Sundays), book some Mexican restaurants and walk as much as possible stopping anywhere that inspires you.

• Copenhagen: visit in the summer so that you can lay in a park in the sun, perhaps with a picnic? A bottle of table ferments kombucha or natural wine? Bike around in the sun, the feeling is unparalleled.

In other news… it feels odd to write about fashion when here the mountains are covered in snow and it was crisp when I got out of bed today, utterly gorgeous though. So funny we are shifting into winter, while the rest of the world, meaning where my friends live, is not.

If I’m honest, a part of me is missing the city life that gives that urge to dress up, feel inspired, do tons of people-watching while having a glass of wine. It’s difficult in a town of 20k people, which I love, but I have also been here for a long time now and a little trip to Aussie would not hurt. Maybe soon… !!!

Happy Easter!

I am going to take it very easy and listen to Lykke Li’s new songs on repeat.

I was originally planning a surf trip (I categorically never say no to surfing), but I’ve had so much on my plate (very exciting though!!) during the last two weeks that I’m going to stay at home instead of driving four hours one way, ehhh. So I booked a sauna sesh and I’m planning on doing some trail running, if the weather allows (looking so bad right now).

Anyhow, the point of this newsletter is my current beauty/skincare wish list: what I need (must repurchase), want, and have discovered recently.

To give you some context, I am a skincare person. Full stop. I am obsessed with whatever is good and want to try everything. But I’m not that into makeup. Something I was recently reminded of when I had to update my makeup for the first time in 11 months, lol. It’s bad. I can easily go about my day without any beauty enhancements. I’m also super loyal when it comes to products, so it actually feels kind of exciting to be interested in something new.

I just got the Westman Atelier contour stick and blush, both are amazing. The colors and textures are so good.

Auteur definite activator serum. I’d love to try everything from this brand, I’ve only been hearing good things. Even tempted to try the retinol, but the price point is very, very steep.

Fara Homidi lip plumping oil, lip compact & eye compact. FH just launched at Mecca, and I’m trying to avoid entering that webstore. Fortunately for my wallet, there’s no physical store where I currently live, ha. I’ve been wanting to try this brand for ages. Such good branding, and apparently the pigments perform really well.

Supernatural cream cleanser. Emma Lewisham is my fave skincare brand when it comes to the price to quality ratio, and I love every product I’ve had and currently use. They just launched a new cleanser, which is supposed to be miraculously good. Kind of works like a serum as well. Curious. I’m all for innovation.

Koh Gen Do maifansi moisture foundation is one I’d like to try. I love this one from Chanel (B20 & BD21), and recently tried Westman Atelier complexion drops (shade III), which looked really good on my skin.

When it comes to foundation, I want to see my skin, so it should blend and enhance, nothing more. I don’t wear foundation daily, but still, Maifanshi is a cult. Ordering online is the issue, the shade has to be exact, and I prefer a golden undertone, but I’m currently more tanned than usual.

Monastery cleansing oil is another cleanser on my radar. I love an oil cleanser because I do face massage a lot, but you never really know which ones work, the glide has to be very specific. I take my time with it, which is why I massage with a cleanser that is not too harsh or active. Another Melanie-approved product. Definitely curious about this one, as it’s a bit of a cult.

BR masque vivant. Need to restock. My skin can feel the absence…

U Beauty lip compact. Lots of lip products, but I’ve been suffering from very dry lips in New Zealand (the dry air in the South?!), so I’m just doing some vital research. Also, for more low-key days, this is the lip balm I want/need.

LYMA laser. Well, if money wasn’t an issue. I can think of a lot of things I’d spend over 2.5k on before a red light laser… but yeah. Another super interesting one right here.

Lesse ritual serum. Here comes a confession. I’ve never really had a vitamin c serum, which you’re meant to use in the mornings. This one tops my wish list, but I’m also trying not to overload my routine and mess up my skin barrier. Also want this SPF !!

Lilis body peel. All hail Korean skincare. This is one of the best-kept secrets in fashion and beauty inner circles.

Eye pencil so good for when I need it. The texture is unreal.

Chanel le lift. I just told someone I always use whatever’s left of my face serum on my hands. I mean, there’s always some residue, and it bloody works. But I’d love to try this one too… and I still love my Aesop, Sans Ceuticals etc.

My original idea was to write about the fashion weeks, my fave looks, collections and all that, like I used to when I was working for magazines. But, I often find that writing in that way is a bit… I don’t know, it kind of misses what I actually like, which is really the whole point of this Substack, just things that feel more considered, a bit more edited (not edited… blogging circa 2004, lol), and that actually resonate with me.

And, I often find myself drawn to individual pieces within a collection, rather than the full looks or the overarching styling narrative. With that said, once in a full moon there’s a collection I would love to wear as such in its entirety, think of old Celine, The Row… But usually, things get way better at the re-sees (seeing the collections after the shows), particularly because you can really see and feel the individual pieces and place them within your own context. You start thinking about how you’d personalise them, almost like shopping for yourself, ha.

So now, a minute after fashion week, which I followed from about as far away as possible, down in Wānaka to be exact, here are 7 things I’m into right now, including a few from fashion weeks:

1. Prada Fall 2026. The show had a super interesting concept. Miuccia and Raf used just 15 models, each moving through four layered looks, closer to how women actually get dressed. And then there was my muse, Julia Nobis, and that scarf. That hair. All of it. Loved it.

2. This couch, or whatever set it is, the colour… gives the feel of European spring.

3. Eye cream on my radar. Heard only good things from insider friends, everyone uses it. I’ll admit… I haven’t had one (eye cream) since high school, so, SOS. Now at the top of the cart.. for a reference read here and here !!

4. It’s been too long since my sweet ex-colleague Columbine has posted, when she does, it’s golden. Love the satin Margiela flats.

5. Lots sheer references.. The Row, Prada. For instance.

6. A solid Yohji Yamamoto set from 2000. It’s perfect. Available at Dotshop, of course.

7. My girl Cyndle (and someone I interviewed twice for my blog back in the Styleby days) has been featured on the new Unconditional Substack. Such a good interview!! Go read it and give the Substack a follow.

I’m excited about this one as it moves me slightly beyond my usual fashion orbit. Over the past year I’ve spent more time outdoors than ever, surfing, hiking and everything in between, which has meant investing in some new gear. New Zealand does independent outdoor stores well, and Heatwave in Wānaka stands out.

Run by Alice and Fionn, Heatwave is an independent outdoor lifestyle store and community project based in the Southern Alps of New Zealand. They focus on hiking, biking and running, but what they’ve built goes beyond product, with grassroots events, morning run clubs and an open, genuinely welcoming atmosphere.

And everything they stock looks so good while remaining fully functional. Brands include Norda, Hikerkind and QUOC, among others.

Thank you, Alice, for taking the time to reply. I’m currently on my way back to Wānaka and very excited to get back there.

What’s the concept behind Heatwave, and how did your respective backgrounds shape it?

I think Heatwave slowly built itself up in our subconscious for a while. We definitely felt like we were missing access to the kit we knew and loved having been in London for so long and when we started thinking about bringing it in we knew we didn’t want to own a ‘shop’ we wanted it to be a place where everyone felt welcome to pop in and have a chat, to plan missions and to be able to meet like minded people. I’m so grateful we’ve been able to do it because not a day goes by where we’re not stoked about the interactions we’ve had with new people.

Fionn grew up in London and from a young age was immersed in skate and graffiti culture, he also grew up in the hardcore punk scene which has a big sub culture for endurance sports. The shop name actually comes from a hardcore punk album (not a weather system). A lot of what Fionn does and I think you can see it in Heatwave, is influenced by this up bringing. I grew up in NZ so was always in the outdoors, like most kiwis. I went on to work in footwear design in London, seeing the good an the bad of the industry, I like to focus on materials, and manufacturing. I think the combination of our upbringings in vastly different scenes, our love of the outdoors and our professional backgrounds really did compliment each other when we were building this and continue to do so. We’ve also learnt a lot from each other in the process so it feels like Heatwave has come into it’s own now and we’re watching it grow!

Looking back, what was the hardest part of getting the business off the ground?

There has definitely been a lot of tough moments and we’ve done a lot of learning the hard way. I do think one of the hardest parts was finding a home for Heatwave. We had been working hard to start it for a long time but being in tiny Wānaka, it’s quite hard to find a space. We decided to still commit and started as an online retailer for 6 months, after that we moved into a co-working space in town on weekends (General Service). Every Friday night we would bring in all our stock, put up temporary walls, hang clothing rails from the rafters and transform the space in to our own little shop, all to pack it up again on Sunday nights. We did this for a whole year before we finally found our full time space. As much as it was super hard work it was such a cool opportunity to allow us to spend time in the community rather than behind out screens and it got us to where we are today.

How do you choose the brands you stock? What makes something feel right for Heatwave?

We don’t necessarily have a set criteria and we certainly have some pieces that you won’t expect to see in an outdoors focussed store (like a chef brand from London). But we’re absolute suckers for good people, innovation and brands that are constantly evolving and trying new things. We have a few hard no’s at Heatwave, such as we won’t stock waterproof products that use PFA’s. We only bring in kit that we’re confident to back and stands up to our ethos of buy well and buy less. If we wouldn’t use it ourselves, it won’t find it’s way into the shop.

How much do performance and personal style influence both what you stock and what you wear, and would that balance, or your personal style, change if you were based somewhere more urban, like London?

They influence it massively and we’ve been super lucky to find brands that combine the two seamlessly. I can honestly say I don’t think our personal style or what we stock would change massively if we were back in London. We love the functionality of what we stock and the way it can all transition so smoothly into an urban environment. I think we’ve found our sweet spot!

You’ve now got your own Heatwave pieces (which I love). How did that come about, and what’s the ethos behind them?

We always wanted to have a couple of our own bits in the store and we’re always looking to add more eventually. They’re a nice way or expressing Heatwave’s personality more literally which is super fun. Some of our pieces have been my Mum’s artwork which I am obsessed with! Another has been done by a Graffiti artist in Bogotá who works with a lot of hardcore punk bands which is right up Fionn’s alley. And others have been bits we’ve made by hand ourselves. I’ve always really enjoyed making things so it’s been so fun to be able to do that as a part of work. I suppose the ethos behind it then, is just to allow us a small space to experiment and have a bit of fun with the brand. I’m so glad you love them!

What’s on rotation for you at Heatwave right now? What are you actually wearing?

Oh dear, that’s a slippery slope, I could go on for days! Shoe rotation for both of us is Norda and Bedrock for sure, got to be comfortable when we’re standing all day. You’ll almost always find me in a Gramicci Talecut skirt or a Hikerkind Skort, they are my absolute go to and such a good wardrobe staple you can dress them up with a big blouse or down with a baggy tee. Fionn will usually be in Gramicci shorts and a big tee. If Arsenal is doing well the football jersey will come out. But overall we keep it pretty casual in store.

The store feels like more than a shop, part gear space and part community space. How important is community to what you’re building?

I love this because that’s exactly what we’re going for! We knew we wanted to create a hub for people to hang out in, chat about their next adventure and meet like minded people. Having a mixture of gear from run to bike, hike, climb and more means that we get a really fun crew of people through the door.

Community is at the absolute core of what we do and we wouldn’t want it any other way. We love hosting events, run clubs, rides and what ever else we can find the time to do. As long as we are creating a welcoming space and helping people spend more time outside, we’ll call it a job well done!

What’s been the most rewarding community moment so far?

There have been so many it’s hard to pick! I think overall the pure joy we get to see when someone comes in to share their outdoor experiences like a new PB, a bucket list hike or anything along those lines is just so exciting.

If I had to pick a specific moment though; we spent 6 months training about 40 people to run their first half or full marathon and the moment we were all standing together again after everyone had crossed the finish line at Queenstown Marathon was beyond rewarding. Just seeing people achieve their goals and make so many friends along the way was epic!

The in-store vibe also feels very intentional. How did you approach the look and feel of the space?

I’m not sure how to explain this one. I think I just had an idea in my head of colours and textures I knew I wanted to use and convinced Fionn to roll with it! We definitely wanted a very open space and one that was relatively modular so we could keep having fun with merchandising and move things around to host events. There was certainly a lot of masking taping fake fit outs on the walls when we first got the keys!

When you’re not working, how do you each like to spend time outdoors?

Fionn is a super keen runner so a majority of his free time is spent running, both road and trail. When we’re closed on a Tuesday he’ll easily spend hours out in the hills. I love slower activities like hiking and climbing (although I’m really enjoying my riding at the moment). What ever I do I’m always drawn to doing it with friends.

What are your personal non-negotiables when it comes to outdoor gear?

For both of us it would be performance and durability. We don’t want to use anything that hinders our outdoor experiences or that we have to be replacing all the time. Things that are thoughtfully designed and built for purpose are key for us.

Do you each have a wellness ritual or practice that helps keep you grounded?

Fionn really does find this in his running. It’s time we he gets to completely zone out which is well deserved! I love to be in my little studio making shoes. It’s not a zone out activity but I just love the making process and all the problem solving that comes along with it. We also both love to do a bit of gardening, we’ve just planted dour first feijoas so wish us luck!

What’s on the cards for Heatwave in the coming year?

Ooh, that’s a tough one. We’re admittedly terrible planners! We’d love to get back into hosting races now that we’re a bit more settled into the new space and using the space for community events too. We hosted a really great talk with Quoc (founder of Quoc shoes) last week and have a movie premiere coming up which we’re super excited about. Anything that gets people buzzing on being outside.

We’d love to add some more bits to the Heatwave collection, maybe pop over to visit some of our brands. There is so much to do!

To close, do you have a few favourite or slightly under-the-radar Wānaka spots you’d be happy to share?

I would love to share! For a great local breakfast spot check out The Good Spot, great coffee, delicious food and amazing staff. For lunch or dinner Mowgli is amazing. It’s maybe not under the radar but it’s quite new to town and is seriously good!

I feel like Wānaka is pretty well discovered but if you’re here and feeling overwhelmed by crowds, I find taking a book and finding a quiet spot along the river is the perfect escape. xx

This time, I’m chatting with Frances Shoemack who is the founder of Abel, a New Zealand–based natural (and disruptive) fragrance house.

I have to admit something. I hadn’t come across Abel until June, when I stayed at Sherwood and spotted their scents on the shelf. After a ski party, I dabbed a little on my wrist, thought nothing of it… and then walked back to my room after a thousand compliments thinking, wait… why do I smell this good. Turns out it was The Apartment. I’ve been obsessed ever since.

And with the brand’s recent relaunch, I really wanted to get Frances on here. Abel’s natural approach just clicks with me. I like to know exactly what I’m putting on my face, on my body, and on my plate, right down to the wine in my glass, and their whole ingredient philosophy feels right.

Career & Abel

What originally inspired you to start Abel?

Abel really began as a personal need. I had always loved scent, but when I went looking for a fragrance that felt modern, elevated and aligned with my values, nothing existed. The category was so dominated by petrochemical ingredients and an outdated idea of luxury. I felt compelled to create an alternative. I wanted something rooted in nature but backed by science, contemporary in feel yet deeply connected to the raw materials. That was the spark and it still guides us today.

You have a background in wine. How does that training influence the way you approach fragrance?

Winemaking taught me to work with my senses in a very disciplined yet intuitive way. You learn to understand how raw materials evolve, how to build structure and tension, how something should feel as much as how it should smell or taste. It also taught me patience and respect for nature’s complexity. All of that shapes how I work with our perfumers Isaac and Fanny. We’re constantly building, reworking, refining, just as you would with a wine.

Looking back, what’s been the most impactful moment in your career so far?

The moment the industry started saying “yes” instead of “it can’t be done.” For years we were told high performing natural fragrance wasn’t possible. Then biotech innovations began opening up the palette, and suddenly we could create natural molecules with real precision and longevity. That shift changed everything. Our latest formulations are 37 percent more concentrated, longer lasting and still 100 percent natural. To prove the impossible wrong in such a tangible way has been hugely meaningful.

And congratulations on the relaunch. It looks incredible. How has stepping into this new chapter felt?

It feels like the culmination of everything we’ve been building towards. We reworked every formula from scratch, redesigned every packaging component, rebuilt our supply chain for lower impact and pushed performance further than ever. What surprised me is how grounded it feels. It is a big evolution, but it feels completely true to who we are. The scents have more depth, more longevity, more clarity, yet they still feel unmistakably Abel.

Beauty

Can you share three skincare products you genuinely rely on?

I keep things very simple and love the plethora of local New Zealand brands doing incredible work.

• This gorgeous everyday moisturiser from Maryse has been my companion on my most recent travels. It has genuinely kept my skin beautifully hydrated and calm, which is not a small thing given how hard long haul travel and constant changing of seasons can be on skin.

• Raaie’s tinted sunscreen is another fave. I take a pretty light touch approach to make up and this is the perfect amount of cover up tint and sun protection all in one.

• The activator 7 oil from Sans Ceuticals is on heavy rotation. We have a sauna at home and my skin and hair are naturally dry so I lather this on my body and even hair and face sometimes post sauna.

Could you walk me through your current evening skincare routine?

In the evenings I always double cleanse if I have been wearing SPF or makeup. Then I use either a hydrating serum or something mildly exfoliating, depending on how my skin feels that day. I finish with a nourishing moisturiser or face oil. I don’t use many steps. It is more about the few things I use consistently.

What’s the most unconventional or “crazy” thing you’ve tried in the name of beauty?

I don’t know if it’s crazy (I’m pretty chill about these things), but we have a cold plunge at home and at the end of every plunge I splash my face 5 times with the freezing (4C) cold water, which always makes me light headed and tingly but I’m sure it’s good for my skin!

Your top three makeup products at the moment?

I’m very light touch on a make up front and have a few items I use / wear every day!

• I love Alephs range of multi-liners, and use the Umber shade for my brows, eyes and occasionally even lips!

• The Violette Fr bisou balm, I have the Mon Cheri and it’s always in my handbag, for a touch up lip that makes me feel a little more put together always (somewhere between a balm, a stain and a lipstick).

• When I was in the US earlier this year I asked a make up artist friend for her top recommendation for a clean mascara and she suggested the Chantecaille, I had no idea how expensive it was until I got to the check out. But, I’ve been using it now since about February (haha probably shouldn’t admit that) and it never smudges (has always been a tough one with clean mascara formula) or cakes, so cost per wear is quite ok at this point!

Wellness

Any supplements you really love?

I really do prefer to get my supplements from my diet. That said, I regularly take magnesium and zinc, vitamin D drops in the winter and this Activist immunity elixir is always in my carry on, I’m convinced it stops me getting sick while traveling!

Do you have a wellness ritual or practice that keeps you grounded?

I would love to be more regular in my rituals, but life has been very hectic this year! That said, I have a bunch of rituals on rotation that are all key for keeping me grounded:

• Getting into nature for a walk, ideally with at least one family member and our dog Sherlock.

• Yoga, these days normally just a half hour practice on the mat at home.

• Sauna, cold plunge and chats with my husband.

• Sleep!!

If you could book any beauty or wellness treatment tomorrow, what would you choose?
A long, restorative facial with an excellent massage. The kind that feels both indulgent and deeply restorative.

Sartorial & Life

Can you share three items from your current sartorial wish list?

• I’m due a new pair of brogues, I’ve had my current pair of Tabi’s for many years and several re-soles and they’re just getting a little worse for wear. They’ll be a hard one to replace, so I’m taking my time waiting for the perfect pair.

• I adore a great two piece suit, it makes everything easy, especially while travelling. I haven’t purchased a new one in many years so am on the look out for the next one - I’ll know it when I see it.

• The perfect summer coverup / kaftan situation. My summer wardrobe is typically very lean and I have it in my head that there’s one perfect cover up that will basically fulfil all my summer wardrobe requirements from beach to BBQ to evening. Suspect I’ll be searching for awhile!

What’s the last thing you bought that felt completely “you”?

I treated myself to a beautiful Jil Sander handbag for my birthday this year. I spent a lot of time deciding exactly what would work for my lifestyle and something that I would have for many years (and age well). I can be a little hard on bags (throwing them around, I’m always going full speed!), so am really trying with this one to look after it while at the same time, trusting that it will age gracefully - the beauty of good quality leather.

Do you have a travel scent you always bring with you? And what’s your everyday go to?

I always travel with several! However, I love Pause while life is in flux, i.e. on the plane, I’ll spray it on my eye pillow and before I go to bed in random hotel rooms. My go-to scents at the moment (and it does switch!) is Laundry Day for daytime, it’s just such a joyous beautiful scent that never fails to lift my spirits. And The Apartment in the evening or when I want something a little more elegant and atmospheric - I feel very chic when I wear The Apartment!

What place in New Zealand feels like a reset button for you?

My family has a very isolated bach at Ohau in the middle of the South Island. I don’t get there often (it’s not the most convenient destination from Wellington!), but it’s the place my body and heart feel most at peace. Perhaps it’s the fact I’ve been going there for so long, the high altitude, negative ions, crisp air, or just just the vast isolated expanse.

And finally, do you have a few Wellington spots you love that still feel a little under the radar?

I think Welly’s whole vibe is under the radar / low key! But a few of my faves;

• Rita right beside our Abel Fabriek in Aro Valley is the most beautiful intimate seasonal restaurant for a treat evening

• Puffin wine bar (central) and Margot (Newtown) are fave spots for a wine

• Our family love an evening of pizza and live music at Moon bar

• Gramercy for a Friday morning croissant

Edit: upon posting this I’ve actually been off-the-grid travelling for a couple of days!

Hey gals!

Let’s start with a little catch-up. It always feels funny writing these because, for someone with an online presence, I actually live a very private existence. My current wet dream is to not exist online at all… and yet, somehow Substack feels like the nicest place to share small discoveries and inspiration. So here we are.

I just set up my little surfboard and spent a few days in Dunedin chasing waves. It was great. Hard. Humbling. But so, so good! I’m going down in board size, so it’s a freaking challenge..

Also, I’m just wrapping up at my current job and planning to travel until New Year’s. Life after that is a bit of a blur, but I was recently asked to turn my thesis into a research paper, so that will be one anchor point (and please, do not let them lure me into a doctorate!). Otherwise it’s going to be lots of time on the road, in the water, and up in the mountains. Honestly, I’m pretty stoked. I worked hard for this chapter.

I’ve actually already left Central Otago, but while I’m on the road it feels nicer and safer to post with a bit of a lag…

I should also mention that I am OBSESSED with The Beast In Me (currently midway through episode 6). Claire Danes is immaculate. The writing, the music.. it all gives me full-body chills. I’m not very good with thrillers, so I barely slept last night, but it is so damn good !!

The Black Friday List & Thoughts —-

I never really want to tell anyone how to shop, but I do want to share how I’m navigating this whole Black Friday chaos. My own circles aren’t that frantic, so I sometimes forget how intense it gets elsewhere, even though my inbox has exploded!

I mostly buy out of need, especially this year, since I’m travelling, working a little on the side, and definitely not in a treat-yourself phase money-wise. It’s a choice. I would still pick up the occasional beautiful piece (something from The Row), but very rarely. Probably not again until next year, but I’ve built a pretty solid collection already, lol. I’ve got three pairs of their shoes in my backpack (which weighed 14 kg when I left).

However, my rule is simple: if something is genuinely expensive and you’ll use it constantly, then a discount is actually worth it.

When it comes to skincare, the only things I’d even consider are the LYMA laser or the Light Salon Boost LED mask. Westman Atelier is also doing their only sale of the year, and I actually need a bronzer. It’s the first makeup product I’ve needed to buy since I left, so this is it.

Dotshop also does their only sale of the year right now, so it’s kind of the moment, if you’ve been eyeing on something. Would love to to get this one!

ACTIVIST has a lovely private sale on right now (you need to subscribe, I think). I adore their Manuka honey… been a regular user for a long time.

And if you surf like me, maybe this is the time to pick up some gear. I just got a new board bag for the roadies ahead.

Otherwise, the one thing I always do is renew my online Pilates subscriptions for the new year. It is all about supporting my health and small businesses. No chaos, no guilt. My go-tos are Fluidform and Bay Studios. Much love. I’m not even sure, if they’re doing anything special this year, but it’s been my little tradition regardless.

Ricari Studios are honestly one of my great loves, and they’re doing 20 percent off right now. If you’re in NYC and craving that sculpted, light-as-air feeling, this is your sign. I’m pretty sure their first product drop is the compression socks, which I’m weirdly excited about. That us because I used to wear a pair when I was on my feet all day, and they genuinely make such a difference.

And, apparently, this corner of the industry does it best. Tsu Lange Yor is donating 15 percent of sales to The Midwest Princess Project, which supports LGBTQ+ youth. So good !!!!

Thought of the Week

New Zealand has already given me a full farmer’s tan: my arms and face are so bronzed, and the rest of my body definitely isn’t.

For a minute there, I was like, girl….. you cannot write about this because you come from fashion (and usually the more luxury end of it, lol). But I hate that kind of boxing-in, because I believe that all aspects of life can look good. And that doesn’t have to mean expensive. And often the outdoorsy stuff is the sexiest.

Right now I live in a place where the backyard is basically the playground. I’ve been spending an absurd amount of time outside. First skiing, then hiking, and hopefully (I cannot stress this enough) surfing again soon. Gone through a lot of SPF, let me tell you. I just tried a tester of this one, loved it instantly, and it’s next on my list.

Unfortunately, my activity levels have taken a hit again (two rounds of antibiotics in two months… fun), but I don’t really feel like dwelling on that. I’m finally starting to feel okay again, though the last leg of the ski season was a bit of a struggle.

I’d actually like to get back into running again (like more than once in a full moon). Hopefully, after months of health stuff, I can finally do that. These would be my ideal runners…

I kicked off my hiking season with Rob Roy Glacier over the weekend with a friend. It was a nice 3.5-hour warm-up, and my body was like, ok, you haven’t done this in a while, but it was so nice and so worth it! I also started breaking in a new pair of hiking shoes. Always such a delightful experience (RIP my feet).

So next up is a mix of my ideal gear and a few things I actually own.

But the most important thing is that whatever you’ve got works for you. Just get out there and do your thing, as that matters more than having the flashiest gear and no idea or skills :)

Apparel

Lara has such a bomb look below, and yes I did the research. She’s wearing Arc’teryx (at least the shoes and backpack). The jacket is great, though I’m not 100 percent sure where it’s from, but Satisfy does similar windbreakers. Love this one. Also, I really love this backpack.

When it comes to base layers, I’m a hardcore Mons Royale fan. It’s a local label from Wanaka with a big heart.

I’m currently all Patagonia on the top layer. I got a waterproof jacket (which I cannot find online) and these pants from a couple of years ago, and they still do the job perfectly. Also, I live in an alpine climate (for now), so I kind of have to be slightly more prepared.

Other pieces on my radar? Well, I just ordered this one (got it and love it!!) And this shirt shirt is good. And I am obsessed with these shorts. What a cute brand btw… they use hemp to make the clothing.

Hiking shoes

My old ones were Merrell boots. I got them in San Francisco about a month before hiking the Inca Trail, my very first hike over ten years ago. They lasted all the way until this year. This time around my main requirement was switching from a boot to ankle height. Just a personal preference. Kind of love the ones Lara’s wearing though… and my forever-fave shoes (worn nonstop for five years) would’ve done the job too. They were from the Cecilie Bahnsen x Matches collab (the shoes in the last pic here).

By thewway, Cecilie Bahnsen just dropped the chicest collection with North, their second collab. So good.

I ended up getting another pair of Merrell shoes mostly because they’d served me so well, and I actually needed something waterproof (and didn’t want to splurge). But now I’m rethinking the whole waterproof thing and kind of just want Lara’s shoes. Clearly I’ve been influenced, hah.

Love these ones too! And these.. Roa is such a nice brand. And what a great collab, but not waterproof. Now that I think about it, I completely messed up the whole shoe game, but it’s fine. Life’s not that serious.

And for the record: Vibram is the only sole I approve of.

Sunglasses

I’m super into District Vision in this department. Love these sunnies from them, such good technical style. Goodlids do nice ones too, you know.

Hydration

Super important. Nalgene is a good one, love this one too. And that Satisfy vest? A total dream.

Gear

Well I want everything, the best tent apparently, cute cutlery, maybe a sleeping bag? And this is very vital. I met two good friends of mine on the Milford Track back in 2023. The girls had wine with them, and I had a small whisky bottle, haha. Instant friends. They used these to carry the wine. Slightly crazy, but that’s the game.

I have to say I got that Gnuhr shirt from Coffee Outdoors and damn, they do branding so well. Sorry about the photo quality, but a handwritten note and a cup of coffee? How nice is that. If everyone did branding this good… take notes.

I was planning to post another entry instead of this one, but I wasn’t happy with it and wanted to make it longer. So much for keeping it cool and casual, like blogging in 2006, but I’m already overthinking. But I’ll forgive myself; it’s been a long week. Last weekend I even managed to book my local Rosewood Matakauri spa offer for the wrong date and ended up double-paying for it. Classic me. I hadn’t had a massage or any kind of treatment in months, maybe even a year, so I was pretty stoked, lol. They have a Finnish sauna (major!! like an actual sauna from Finland where I’m from), three pools and a bar. I was okey for those four hours.

Anyhow, I’m trying not to overthink this one. Just an entry I put together in two hours and after two glasses of sauv blanc. It’s a small list of images and things that have been resonating with me lately.

Also nice to see Elin Kling post something she’s actually wearing (do it more often girl!). I suppose if there’s one item to have this season, it’s a skinny red scarf, preferably from The Row, but I’m sure a second-hand one would do just fine hehe.

I also need some camping gear (believe it or not, I’m into that sort of thing too) and would love to get the Satisfy shirt and these socks. Actually, I just ordered them…

I’ve been eyeing this tent too (shoutout to this store, they have the craziest selection) I also need new hiking boots since my old ones are done, so any suggestions?

I wanted to share these two dream pieces. This Prada leather jacket is probably more suitable for the season in Europe, but still so good. I’m especially into these Thistles sunnies. New sunglasses are high on my wish list right now, as I only have one pair with me at the moment.

I’ve been working pretty hard over the past couple of months, so there’s more fun stuff and travel ahead for me soon, and I couldn’t be more excited (but that has meant a lot of money saving again). It’s not easy rooting yourself in a new country, especially when it’s not through uni or somewhere you naturally meet people. But it’s all good, good wine, good views, and a bit of faith that it’ll all come together.

Apologies for the slightly late entry, but I hope the content more than makes up for it!

A little over a month ago (or maybe two?) I mentioned that I’d love to start interviewing people who really resonate with me. People with an actual point of view in today’s oversaturated content era. Just like I used to do back in my Styleby days, pre-Covid.

And I am finally on it!

First up is Emily Morello, journalist and beauty editor at RUSSH magazine, and the genius behind my current favorite Substack, The Rich Crème. I must admit, even though I have been reading the magazine for years, I only started following Emily more recently. But now I’m kind of obsessed. Her Substack is so good. It feels personal, like chatting with your best friend (the one with all the access) about everything beauty. Sensational really is the word. It’s the sharpest, most honest, fun space for beauty discovery right now.

And my top read? Cult products beauty industry people actually use, a beauty routine that cures hungover, and an everything guide to sunscreen. Thank me later…

I also love highlighting people from this part of the world who deserve way more recognition. Emily absolutely ticks that box.

Career

Why did you start your Substack?

I was an avid reader on the platform, but felt like there wasn’t a lot of beauty content (at least, the type of content I wanted to read). It took me months to get over the anxiety of starting something new, but I decided to just go slow and see what resonated.

I’m also a writer, so I love long form… And it’s refreshing to self-publish without KPIs or data driving every decision you make. There is absolutely a place for that, but having complete editorial control is so much fun. There was probably a little bit of Instagram fatigue there, too…

I’ve had some great traction thus far, very excited to see where it goes.

How do you decide what to share there? Is it instinctive or deliberate?

A mix… I mostly pull posts together based on instinct, or a real happening in my life. It might be triggered by a conversation or a DM. I do have many drafts though, as well as interviews, profiles... So some of it is planned in advance.

But now that the platform is growing and I’m showing up for paid subscribers, I’m thinking I might need to treat it like more of a tiny media company than a fun newsletter… We’ll see.

What has been your most impactful career moment?

I’ve had a few! One of the greatest things about my job and the democracy of beauty is that I’ve met so many of my heroes. I’ve had dinner with them, interviewed them. Sometimes I can’t believe the access or that I’m in the same room as these people… I’m also really proud of the work I’ve done at RUSSH magazine (I’m the beauty editor there). We launched a dedicated beauty issue in partnership with CHANEL last year. The final product was incredible.

Regarding Substack, I just landed my first advertising partner. I’ve turned down a few previous offers because I am extremely protective of my readership (to the point where I was losing money on it until recently… ha ha). I would go out and buy things just because I wanted to write about them, or sacrifice other paid work because I needed the time to put a post together. Fortunately, now it’s profitable! But the brand I worked with – Eighth Day – is a brand I deeply admire, to the point where I thought it was a mistake when they reached out. Small in the scheme of things but it’s validated all the time and effort I’m putting into the platform.

Beauty

Can you share three skincare products you can’t live without at the moment?

Currently very into the iS Clinical Active Serum (for some reason my twenty-something acne is back), and my beloved Avene Cicalfate for perioral dermatitis. I’m back on eye cream, too. Cosmedix is hands down the best I’ve tried. 99% of eye cream does nothing for me. The Cosmedix Opti Crystal Serum is expensive but actually works.

Any makeup or skincare discoveries that have actually lived up to the hype?

I think the viral Biodance masks are legitimate. They seal all your skincare in, and leave you looking super plump. If you can manage sleeping in it, you’ll look like newborn when you wket up. I think LED light is the real deal, too. You just need to be consistent with it…

I’m a diehard Rationale fan, too. It’s a cult Australian skincare brand. I can probably count on two hands the brands that have visibly changed my skin and this is one of them.

Is there a recent brand you’ve discovered and loved?

Reome! I’m only just getting into it, but I have really high hopes. The founder is incredibly invested in quality and efficacy (an ex beauty editor!). I met her and was so impressed I literally ripped open the skincare in the taxi home from our interview. I think she’s the real deal.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve done in the name of beauty?

Hmm, I am actually so low-touch, to the point where I think I should do more – ha. I don’t do lasers, needling, no injectables… Maybe buccal massage in my mouth? Or acupuncture for my thin hair line? I love lymphatic massage too which is kind of uncomfortable but 100/10 for digestion.

I actually did a week-long health retreat in Bangkok back in January. It was more for wellness than beauty but it changed my life (RakXa for anyone curious). I did Thai medicine, reiki, Chinese medicine, had my scalp oiled, my stomach set on fire, I meditated, I cold plunged, I did Tai Chi, electromagnetic therapy on tight shoulders… it was fucking incredible. I desperately want to go back.

We’re in our early 30s. What are your thoughts on Botox?

We are! Honestly I feel like I’m in a weird headspace with it. I’ve had Botox twice in my jaw for teeth grinding a few years back, and that’s it. Right now I don’t want it, or feel like I need it. I kind of just want to age as I am.

I’m a little bit nervous about all the long-term effects of anti-wrinkle, filler and all of that. But then I have an off day where I feel bad about myself and start Googling under-eye filler. Never say never, but for now I am just not interested enough to book an appointment.

I also have trypanophobia so I think that has prevented me from trialling anything invasive (lol).

Wellness

Do you have a wellness ritual that keeps you grounded?

I’m pretty committed to wellness these days. I don’t check social media until after 8 a.m. (I’d stretch it longer if I could but I often need to be across news for work, ha ha). Every morning I tongue scrape or oil pull – I picked up this habit at the retreat and cannot imagine my life without it now. I also practice yoga a few times a week. If I can do these things, that’s pretty good.

If you could book on beauty/wellness treatment tomorrow, what would it be?

Hmm, maybe a massage at Venustus. Or an infrared sauna… or an appointment with my Osteopath, lol. 30-something back problems are no joke.

Sartorial

Can you share two items from your current sartorial wish list?

Oh man, so many. I’m spending all my money on my house right now so clothes have taken a back seat. Probably this navy P Johnson suit, or I really want a piece of jewellery with a coloured stone, I think green? Specifically, something from Olivia Bond. This tourmaline pendant would be nice.

What’s the last thing you bought that felt truly “you”?

Hmm, another white t-shirt from Bassike? That is so boring, but mine was well and truly due for an upgrade. I am such a plain dresser. Aside from jewellery, I don’t do anything loud or ornate.

I’ve had a bit of writer’s block during the past few days - it happens. I don’t post unless I’m happy with it, and that’s probably why I’ve turned down most paid collaborations over the years. Content has to come first.

What I did

I’ve been skiing!

Super stoked to get back up the mountain again on my days off. I was sick for so long that I’ve had to hold off on skiing, but I’m finally feeling better.

I also went to this infrared sauna place twice last week. It helps with pretty much everything: toxins, inflammation, skin, existential dread... and it's time off screens, which is essential. I’ve been going to a place called Align because they do happy hour sessions for 29 dollars (that is New Zealand dollars, which converts to approx. 15 euros). My wallet sends its regards.

And I managed to sneak in a reformer class while a friend was in town teaching and I felt very virtuous afterwards.

A new merino balaclava for skiing from a Mons Royale sale (the colour is mauve, which I think is from last season, but dark olive looks nice too). Mainly to protect my face, as the sun can be pretty harsh.

I also got these cute little 2kg hand weights because I love doing pilates at home. Not entirely sure where I’ll stash the extra weight when I move to the next place, but oh well. I’m already using them most days and feeling very pleased with myself, lol.

What I was listening to

Discovered Ben Morgan not long ago and his music’s perfect in the background with a little candle and some wine.

What I Saw

I went to see the Lord of the Rings Extended Edition marathon (12 hours and 46 minutes with two short breaks) at the movies. The theatre was lovely, with reclining seats and all. I treated myself to a bit of pinot noir and a margarita or two, had the best time, and maybe felt it the next day. I’ve seen the films a thousand times and read all the books, but here are a few relevant notes anyway:

• Both Éowyn and Legolas wear the best colour combos ever, which is the combination of light blue and brown.

• I’ve always loved the jewellery in these films. Éowyn’s golden necklace with blue diamonds is as good as it gets and I’d happily wear an elven circlet all day, every day. Wētā really nailed it. Such an interesting place to visit, by the way.

On that note, one of the things I love about these films is how the clothes actually look worn. They’re not just beautifully designed, as they’re textured, lived-in, and crafted with real care and accuracy to the books. You can see the detail (embossed tree motifs and elvish runes woven into fabrics.. )

So many newer fantasy or historical productions dress their characters in costumes that look almost plastic or too clean, too colourful, too new to feel believable. Is it the social media era’s obsession with perfection bleeding into everything? Because honestly, it doesn’t translate on screen, big or small, and it just feels off.

Some great finds in that colour pairing include these pants, a knit, a shirt, a t-shit and a bag. These pants are great too, and this striped Miu Miu tee is a classic example.

I’m definitely into suited pants right now… just realised.

Weekly discoveries

This week’s discoveries come from the worlds of beauty and wellness:

• The new Mecca in Melbourne looks like beauty heaven and more piccies here. Mecca is the best beauty store in this part of the world (or maybe in the world?!) as it carries the best brands. I used to advise my European friends who work in beauty to follow them.

• While we’re at it, Ricari Studios have a new London location. The best lymphatic drainage!!!

Apologies for the late arrival of this week’s entry. I’ve been out of action with a cold for six or seven days. It sucked. The mountains looked beautiful, and I could not do a thing.

The good news is that I got a job! Now I can start making more future plans!!!!

Skin Rant

Gosh… I’ve been dealing with some psoriasis or eczema flare-ups on my neck and body for two months or so. And now, my facial skin has started reacting to products I’ve used for years - formulas that once helped clear my acne and gave me the most consistent skin I’ve ever had. So, what gives?

I’m starting to suspect it might be the combination of a face oil with a hint of vitamin A and P50V - something I hadn’t thought twice about until Reddit sent me into a mild spiral. Then again, it could just as easily be stress from moving countries, a change in climate (even though I’m used to winter), a different diet, more wine than usual (unfortunately), or hormones doing what they do. Aging, I guess?

Anyway, fuck! My current research team consists of ChatGPT, Reddit, and casual Googling, because there’s no facialist nearby. For the next few weeks, I’m keeping it simple: just Bioderma cleansers, Augustinus Bader Rich Cream, and SPF. Also, might have to take more lukewarm showers… Once my barrier feels somewhat recovered, I’ll slowly reintroduce a serum or two, but nothing too strong anytime soon, and definitely not all at once.

I’ve heard from a few people that their skin freaked out after moving here, and that it eventually settles… apparently within a year. We’ll see. But yeah, it sucks.

Recs & Discoveries

While I was lying in bed sick - in true Samantha Jones style - I did stumble upon a few things I want to share:

• You’ll want to read this. Just saying… the point is, I’m not going to summarise it for you.

• A truly stunning spa, with a second location set to open in Sydney before summer, apparently.

• The Saks Potts book is high on my list. That era was a standout for style. My backpack is currently carrying at least four pieces from them.

• This is going to be my hot girl summer, as I’ll probably have to be more gut-health conscious now that my skin is a mess. Looks yummy!

• Late on board with this one, but Phoebe Philo is opening her brand’s first store in London.

• Dream job for anyone in LA! I’ve been a subscriber, and Daphne has such a thoughtful approach to all things wellness.

Fly These Straight Into My Closet

Anyway, while in bed, I ended up organising my photos and came across a bunch of pieces from previous seasons that I still love and find inspiring. Here’s a list of things I’d gladly welcome into my closet. However, before we get to the major recs: I’ve used a couple of different sources to track down sold-out pieces over the years. The two I’d recommend are Gab Waller (an industry legend at this point) and Sourcewhere. Both take requests, and while it can get pricey, that really depends on what you’re buying.

1. This Céline blouse from circa 2017, worn by Pernille. I’ve seen a few around lately on Vestiaire, Sourcewhere etc… it’s a classic!

2. This dress is another major Céline number from 2017 (Philo’s peak era), and it’s currently available on Dotshop. Click!

3. Speaking of dresses - I love this one from Bottega Veneta 2023, so a bit more recent. And naturally, no entry without Julia Nobis.

4. I’m still lusting after these Miu Miu x New Balance trainers. They’ve been massively popular, and usually anything that takes off on TikTok gives me the ick, but not these.

5. The Chloé banana top from 2004 (also by Phoebe) is such an iconic piece! Available here.

6. Saks Potts are responsible for numerous great coats. This trench from a couple of seasons ago still haunts me. I’ve seen a few on Vestiaire recently.

7. That’s an old collage from the pre-Covid era, and I still love it. Or more like, I still love all the pieces. RIP Ven Store - they made the best cashmere sets. The pants are from The Row, and the shoes… Cecilie Bahnsen. I actually have them and have been wearing them almost every day for five years, and now they’re falling apart. My favourite pair ever. Can they please remake them?

8. And the last piece? The Sophie Bille Brahe tennis bracelet. <3

This is, if I am counting correctly, the fourth time Julia Nobis has ended up as the cover image for one of my entries. Well deserved, honestly. She is my dream girl! And the other reason is probably that she often stars in The Row’s campaigns, which are undeniably me… or at least, what I try to be.

On another note, from now on, I have decided to place some of future my posts partly behind a paywall.

Now, I know that it might seem bold given I am not exactly boasting thousands of subscribers. But the truth is, these entries take time, thought, and a good dose of love to create. And having come from a background writing for some of the most respected magazines, I have learned the importance of valuing that work. Also, I have got lots of things planned. Remember when I interviewed Jo Ellison or Claire Thomson-Jonville for my blog when I was working at Styleby? (It still feels surreal that it even happened.) Maybe something along those lines and occasional outfits could even appear.

So, if you have been enjoying the content and want to keep reading it all while supporting this project, I would love if you would consider a paid subscription. With that in mind, I am planning to post weekly entries from now on with a little more intent. <3

Anyhow, this is THE list. The things that haunt me and keep me up at 2am and would perfect my wardrobe and skincare routine…

The List

1. The Row Spring 2026 is good - as always. I think the photography is particularly good this time around. I want to put my hair up like that - kind of put together, kind of loose and unbothered. The jewellery is impeccable. I assume some of it might be vintage and out of reach price-wise, lol. Also they have got some good trousers right now. I am always looking for a new pair and I feel like I have none atm (apart from one pair from The Row in my backpack for special occasions). These are damn good .. and sold out.. shit!!

2. I am pretty brand loyal when it comes to skincare. Once something works, I stick with it (you would know P50 and Emma Lewisham). That said, my neck’s been acting up lately, which might be due to the weather or the heating (it is winter in NZ), and I have had a few eczema flare-ups. The skin on my face is fine, though, and my barrier seems solid, just need to figure out the neck situation. Still, I love a new discovery!! Lately, everyone (in fashion) seems to be talking about Skin Design London... I love a good overnight cream for extra hydration, so definitely curious about this one!

3. The LYMA laser !! I feel like everyone has got his beauty toy, at least, according to my Instagram feed. Super luxurious, fun, and apparently very effective. I have only got my NuFace mimi with me right now.. but one can only dream right? I am such a sucker for beauty toys. I want them all. If Jonna Czech and Phoebe Tonkin approve, so should I. Also what a great skin Phoebe’s got! Gives me motivation.

4. This Miu Miu swimsuit. It is the kind piece you should were as part of an outfit - maybe with those The Row pants I mentioned earlier and a nice blouse. Unbothered and not giving a fuck vibes are key here. And an open back is always sexy.

5. The same outfit would, of course, need the Phoebe Philo small GIG bag. Suede is my preference for all the reasons that are not practical. It is the first bag I have been semi seriously thinking of buying in a long while. Actually, if I had that much extra, I most likely would. Do not be surprised, if I do…

6. I love this dress my ex-colleague Columbine is wearing. I actually do not know where it is from.. but I shall add it to my wish list. Love the shoes as well.

7. The most likely purchase (after the overnight cream) are these Phoebe Philo sunnies. I prefer the more delicate frames over the other style. I used to own the famous Edge sunglasses from the Cèline era, but I lost them and never really recovered. These would be perfect for the New Zealand summer, and I find that this style is very flattering.

8. Also, something you have seen or heard mentioned here before. I love The Row’s Dune flip flops. Ridiculously expensive… but no one does them better. How annoying. I think they are also sold out, but there some sourcing wizards out there you can always rely on. However, these are not bad alternatives.

9. I am still constantly thinking about this Miu Miu fleece. Kind of last season… but it haunts me. It would be so perfect for travelling and playing it low-key, as I do not encounter so many opportunities to wear fancy stuff - not that I normally do either, lol. No link.. because I think it is sold out. Here is a grey one.

10. Sophie Bille Brahe Etoile Afrique necklace. It has been on my wish list for years. I was supposed to buy it for myself as a graduation gift, but I really needed a buffer since I decided to move to NZ. There was one on Vestiare but is was sold recently. However, you can always request a SBB piece from their previous collections, as they make bespoke jewellery or that is what they have told me.

11. Last but not least, The Row’s Nesson shirt or any good checked shirt, as worn here by Lara (who has become my latest style obsession).

Sorry not sorry, this is not the cheapest edition, but it is a brutally honest one. As you can also note, this post repeats a lot of pieces already seen on my Substack. I am actually someone who likes very few things….

Anyhow.

Consider this a loosely curated list of things I have done, places I have liked, and brands I have recently discovered (where have they been all my life?!!). Everything has been filtered through the lens of someone who is, tragically, still between jobs - so yes, budget-friendly but still cute.

North Island:

Raglan has always a such special place. There are lots of good beaches and breaks around. I always go there to visit friends. I had the nicest food (scallops were so damn good) at Ulo’s kitchen.

I also love Piha beach but I have not been there yet on this trip. It is a very different vibe.

In Auckland my fave spot is Hana, which I have already written about. I went to both of their locations for contrast therapy.

Simon James is another nice spot in Auckland. They have actually got two stores and they carry brands like Sophie Buhai, Tekla, Thistle Nyc, etc.

I used to love Orphans Kitchen (rip, gone but not forgotten). The space has since been taken over by another spot that’s doing pretty great things with crudo and natural wine. So all is not lost.

Celeste is another restaurant I love, which has also sadly closed their doors.

OTTO is great. Not super pricey and great for sharing.

I also like Lilian.

Honey Sundays is great for coffee.

Some brands:

If you know me, you know Emma Lewisham. I have been using their products for three years or so. Still madly in love. My faves are the Vitale Elixir, Skin Reset Serum and Supernatural Face Cream (though I have been using Augustinus Bader now (not money conscious let me tell you!))

Activist Manuka might be the highest quality mānuka honey I have ever come across. With mānuka, potency really matters, as you want it to be potent enough to actually do something. I have got their face mask (which you can also eat. lol) and I just ordered their cute limited edition pouch and they added an extra jar as a gift <3

Mother Made is another brand/supplement I have been liking. Their relax supplement is the only one I am taking right now with the addition of magnesium, because I am kind of travelling and I cannot carry much with me.

I came across sans(ceuticals) at Hana and it was love at first sight. Highlights so far have been their hair wash and body+hair+face oil. Such a great price-quality ratio.

The Gut Co do supplements as well and so far I have been liking their Cleanse formula. Though, now that I think about it, I think this is an Aussie brand.. sorry. I have also been using magnesium from Cymbiotika (and matcha), but it is an US based brand.

Two Islands make good electrolytes!

South Island:

I stayed in Sherwood during the first week and spent way too much money (I also had a car, which is so convenient in this part of the world), but it is nice place and the restaurant is good! It has a lovely community vibe and I have been back for drinks since.

I have been doing refomer pilates here at reform. I prefer more classical pilates, but this one builds strength nicely.

Besboke Kitchen is my fave lunch spot (the soup is insane!!).

Kamana has stunning views, Arrowtown is gorgeous (there are some nice boutiques that sell Sophie Bille Brahe, Ganni, Khaite etc.), and the Onsen has also got the view.

I would also like to do a spa trip to Rosewood. Remains to be seen.

Also, I always love a trip to Glenorchy or anywhere near there. It is such a nice drive and the backcountry is stunning. Wanaka is also more low-key and local than Queenstown, and I mean that in a nice way, even though I love both.

I am pretty sure I forgot something or a lot of things, but I will list them later. And there some thing that I gatekeep to be honest. Sorry for that. I have got this amazing google maps list, which I have built with friends and it is for friends only.
