Hello there! Back to school week was far from the crispy fall moment of my dreams. I’m not an idiot of course I knew it’d be hot. But we’re in a serious heatwave. Not just uncomfortable. It feels dangerous. Even my mom, a Charleston native who grew up without air conditioning, warns me this is an ominous new level.

It’s so lazy to talk about the weather. I apologize! It’s like asking “so what do you do?!” at a cocktail party. Let’s move on.

Some things bringing me joy lately. (Also a less-than-original substack topic, but it’s popular for a reason).

At work I’ve been cranking on some ‘deep work’ projects. My ‘Chief Creative Officer’ seat is nice and warm. Long, uninterrupted thinking sessions to ideate creative decks, strategy briefings, design + color stories to share with my teams. My background soundtrack is Swimming Paul. Despite attending Vanderbilt and living it up as an expat in Shanghai for six years, I’ve never done coke but I imagine that his music creates a similar feeling to when the drug hits your brain and you’re just so happy and you wanna dance or run laps around the park. I suck at running so that statement is a real endorsement. I love that moment when caffeine + buzzy EDM beats + and a juicy work flow state all syncopate. I’m wiggling at my desk! Untz untz untz!

After learning about taste-washing (listen; read) and witnessing the ever-quickening daily advances of AI, I’m rethinking my personal relationship with Claude. We’re not gonna break-up; the tool is still helpful as a work thought partner sometimes. But I no longer want to invite Claude to the intimate dinner party that is my Substack. I’ve decided that typos and run-on sentences are less offensive than bland, inhuman AI writing. You can smell it from a mile way. I’m also no longer welcoming a robot to help me brainstorm my other earthly, human “get to” joys like planning a 5 year old birthday party, a vacation in Maine or what to cook my kids for supper.

On a lighter note I finally found the perfect shamps and condish - thanks to the unanimous “ROZ!” response to the query I sent to a bunch of chic friends with stellar coiffs. Three months in and I just love it. The formula - plus a drop of this Crown Affair oil - is perfect for my fellow air-dry girlies out there. I’m never paying for a blowout again. Who programmed us to think that “appropriate dressing = blowout?” I always feel my best with slightly messy, air-dryed hair.

Scuppernongs (muscadine grapes) are finally in season. I eat the skin. Thank you to my favorite local CSA! Highly recommend.

I bought myself these very special (soon to sell out) loafers for my birthday. My hot, stylish, smart cousin and dear friend Louisa Ballou told me “you like texture when you dress”. Ding, lightbulb moment. It was such an unlock. Now I look for texture when I shop and dress. Perhaps that also explains my aforementioned distaste for blowouts.

We moved out of our house to start our renovation! I am psyched. Would you like me to share more about this process? LMK.

I took advantage of floor coverings, expansive empty rooms, and a quiet ACed house to spend most of my Sunday painting. Over the last five years, I’ve been teaching myself to paint by studying and replicating the style of my favorite artist, Helen Frankenthaler. I adore her soak-stain colorfield style, and it’s been a humbling experience to say the least. The more I try, the more I develop my own technique. I’d love to have more time and space to keep going. One day!

Last but not least I celebrated my 39th birthday. My husband offered to organize something for me but it’s just been so chaotic that I said no and I was good to let this b-day slide by. But then at the last minute I thought, what the hell, I deserve a celebration.

At first I felt super sheepish planning and inviting my own friends to my birthday dinner, but it ended up being the best night. Lots of laughs, some deep soulful convos, and martinis of course.

Our damn iPhones make it too easy to let those opportunities - big or small - for real connection slip by. A birthday text instead of a hug. A ‘hope u feel better soon!!!’ text instead of dropping off flowers. A phone date instead of a lunch date. I want to strive to be more physically present with my friends this fall. Life is short. Let’s tell - and show - our people we love them! Not just over text!

I’ve been journaling a lot, undertaking some TBM workshops. What my soul has been (screaming at me) is to slow the fuck down. I’m realizing I am a whole lot happier when I embrace that my living is made by running a jewelry business and designing jewelry. And leave the frequent posting to the professionals who make their living from being public figures. But then again it IS fun to write about life and share every now and then. So I’m giving myself permission to just share when it feels FUN. Like the extra sprinkles on top; not a part of my weekly work to-do list. And it feels fun today. So hiiii!

Speaking of my day job, HART is doing so great! I am really proud of what we’re building and how we’re building it. Intentionally. Building our teams. Connecting with our customers and their communities. Craft designs that you’ll want to wear again and again. Not mass-producing tons of high-profit soulless garbage that will end up in a landfill.

Our Nantucket store is thriving - I keep getting lovely texts from friends who visit.

Not that we are officially friends, but Nell Diamond, the founder of Hill House, wrote me and Curry a nice congratulatory email about how good the store looks and how excited she is about our collab (launching 7/30!!!).

Actually Nantucket is where the seed of the HART x Hill House collab was planted. After seeing dozens of women in HHH dresses and HART jewels last summer, it dawned on me that we must, must turn their iconic patterns into our best-selling cords. I particularly love the large mermaid medallion, inspired by the weathervane on top of their Hamptons store.

The pinnacle of summer so far was our family trip up north. My husband and I are in a goldilocks age of family travel, the kind where you start asking, where is “our spot,” the place we return every year to build memories and community? This summer we found a strong contender in Rhode Island. I love the idea of deepening a connection to one place - tradition, friends, community. The more you return, the more you can just ‘be there’ without the pressure of seeing everything and doing all the things.

My vacation was incredibly lowkey. But extremely nice and special in the deliciously rustic kind of way. Our rental was at the end of a pot-holed dirt road flanked by blackberry bushes and stone walls.

Underestimating the chill of a northern summer, I spent a lot of time in this perfect $88 striped cotton Breton shirt I stole from my husband. I also wore that crap out of this Doen jacket and vintage jeans.

Everything was tres casual. No makeup besides this brick-red lipstick (THE BEST), hardly any jewelry besides my favorite lapis chain, simple homemade dinners, chill outfits, early bedtimes, idle watercoloring, and… a Sierra Nevada brewskie or two every night at happy hour.

My kids are finally at the age where they can splash in the water and climb on rocks for hours, and I don’t need to worry they are going to die or get seriously injured. I kept forgetting they don’t need me at the beach, so I’d forget to pack a book or my watercolors. So I ended up just staring at the horizon, glossy-eyed, watching them play.

I spent hours staring at the horizon, hazy-minded with a vague consciousness. Learning to ‘watch the thinker’ as Eckhart Tolle tells me to do. Seriously. That’s probably my core memory of summer. I also collected a lot of rocks. My husband and I would chat and doze on towels as the girls would occasionally sprint up to us to show a magnificent shell, like little sandpipers, and dash away.

I am back home now for a work sprint, and kicking off our home renovation! I am heading to Dallas at the end of August to launch our new store there (in Knox!). It opens August 29th. It just feels right. I enjoy my visits to Dallas – the Mexican food! The vivacious Texan ladies and their style! The genuine hospitality! Texas, you rock. I can’t wait show you the store. We hired Javier Burkle - who designed Miron Crosby’s stores - to design it.

My friends remark on how “busy” I am. “HART is blowing up! You’re so busy!” A mentor once told me that “busy” is not a good thing to strive to be. She said “being busy is inelegant.” An accomplished philanthropist, multi-board member, art collector — she wasn’t suggesting I recline on a chaise. But I get her point, and try to avoid the word. There’s a sense of mindlessness and victim-energy to it, like being swept away.

When Tory Burch - whom I admire greatly - told Emma Grede on her Aspire podcast, “I haven’t had lunch in 21 years.” My gut reaction was, “Fuck. I don’t want to be like that.”

So what am I, if not busy? Stimulated. Grateful. Learning. Introspective. My dance card is full. My cup runneth over. And yes, a little haggard, perhaps. Six work trips in seven weeks will do that.

That demands ninja-level accuracy in packing. More importantly — what NOT to pack. As in, just going ahead and freaking investing in a vanity case of beauty stuff that I permanently keep in my suitcase. (Oh, and duplicate charging cables... no more crawling under my dresser to unplug my phone charger.) Why are the easiest solutions so hard to execute sometimes?

So what’s in my bag? Worthy of buying double — here we go!

• Completely obsessed with this new-to-me tanning gel, Loving Tan. You apply, rinse off after 10 minutes (!!!), and it develops while you go on with your day. The color is superb, very natural. I bought this travel-size $30 kit to try out, and quickly bought the full size.

• I’m officially a Crown Affair devotee. I’m almost out of this repair serum, which healed my deepest peroxide wounds. The dry shampoo smells gorgeous and can’t be beat. The latest? The Radiance Hair Oil is a true magic potion for all the air-dry girlies out there. It enhances my natural wave while adding tons of shine and softness. My hair looks GOOOOOOD for a couple of days, which I extend with Dry Shampoo. This travel bundle is a great intro to the brand if you’re curious.

• I’m still trying to get into my skincare groove. I’ve noticed a *remarkable* change in my skin texture with Sonsie Skin repair cream and serum. No clue what’s in it. But it’s real nice! And Pamela approves.

• I like minimal makeup when I travel. Merit complexion stick, this RMS ‘Glow Quad’ with Luminizer highlighter and Lip2Cheek (HART20 for 20% off!), and this cheap mascara.

• I haven’t changed my fave sunscreen or face wash in six years. This one is cheap, sudsy, squeaky clean without over-drying. I double cleanse.

It’s funny. I’ve never been a committed beauty devotee until recently. This whole second travel vanity case situation made me realize I care more now because I’m getting older and require more cosmetic support than before. This past year I’ve noticed some breakdown in my skin texture and elasticity. My hair is thinning, too. In the grande scheme of things, I’m not panicking. How lucky am I that I am healthy, alive and I GET TO age?

Enough about my sagging skin. Very cool things are happening at work. A collab here, an event there. I’ve been reflecting on how many of these moments are flowers from tiny seeds planted long ago - a conversation, a run-in, a past sponsorship. It’s easy for an outsider to see our collabs as just “happening” — but in reality they’re the result of hundreds of micro-connections, like a string of Christmas lights, over almost a decade. One can’t underestimate how much of a brand “success” comes from time in the market. Compound interest and resilience.

I jetted up to NYC to see our new permanent flagship store at 395 Bleecker Street, opening June 6th. While there, I filmed a segment at the store with Sheer Luxe’s editor in chief, Charlotte Collins. Home again, then back up north to the idyllic, rolling-hill burbs of NYC for a trunk show with The Stax, alongside two brands I admire greatly: With Nothing Underneath and Carolina Irving and Daughters.

It was our first trunk show with the chic moms of Bedford/Greenwich/New Canaan. Many of them have already invested in solid gold charm jewelry (think: Foundrae, Marlo Laz) — so we got to be the fun, eclectic, colorful part of their wardrobe. Permission to play. They loved our teeny gemstone strands, enamel bezel earrings, and baguette tennis necklace, and made some joyous charm jewelry too. Loaded-up bracelets, long necklaces. Maximalist, playful, cheerful-chic.

I whizzed back down south for our love fest with Freda Salvador. I’ve long admired their thoughtful approach. We share a lot of values: integrity, quality, flexibility. I’m always nervous to host other brands — you never know how the turnout will be. But it was great. Buzzy. Vibrant. Full house. Full hearts.

A highlight was a team dinner with Megan Wilkinson Papay, their soulful designer and founder, where we connected over the importance of protecting our creativity. Her metaphor: a company can treat a creative director / founder (or any team member, really) like an oil drill , tapping them dry. You’ve gotta keep finding the source, refilling the well.

And with that, I am looking forward to another slow summer. A gentler pace, refilling my well. I’m working on my family’s and personal summer bucket lists, which I plan to pin to the fridge. More of a optional wish list than a guilt-inducing agenda. Edisto tomatoes, family surf sessions, sunset sails, zinnia bouquets, balmy evening walks. I am here for it.

I’m still very much into the famed jazz pianist, Oscar Peterson. This album of his Duke Ellington covers is the soundtrack to my lazy Saturday mornings - doors open to the garden, making french toast and banana pancakes, with the dogs at my feet.

Clearly I’m feeling better since my last post. I attribute it to an intro call with an executive coach to address my burnout. It’s funny how even talking to someone, without even doing actual therapy, and taking the first steps of getting help can relieve a huge mental burden. I believe I am in what Lacey Phillips of To Be Magnetic calls “the magic dark.”

Now that I’m in a better mood: some shameless work plugs and highlights. I am a longtime reader and fan of The Perfect, so I pretty much squealed when I read: they’re “snapping up one of Hart’s wonderful GOLD-FILLED CHAINS (a great tarnish-resistant alternative to plated or solid gold).”

I’m flying up to NYC next week to meet the founder and editor-in-chief of British fashion media giant, SheerLuxe. Huge fan! More NYC buzz — Blake Lively spent 45 minutes in our store, where she designed several necklaces for herself and bought gemstones as gifts. I hope she gets papp-ed in one! Fingers crossed she’ll become a fan like Gigi Hadid did and wear her jewelry often. Plus, now we’re one degree closer to manifesting Taylor Swift in a necklace!

Soon we’re doing an event with The Stax in Connecticut in mid-May with one of my design idols, Carolina Irving, and With Nothing Underneath.

And we’re on a high after three days in Nashville for a super buzzy partnership with Shopbop. A family friend mega-generously let 5 HART ladies take over her manse in Belle Meade. We call it “Camp Betsy.” I wanna be like Betsy when I grow up: despite the house being full of precious antiques, fine art, and delicate objects, she’s always letting people stay over. Last night we finished the evening with a pajama pizza party, petting her plump extroverted cat Pierre, who’d please a Disney casting director. I am not really a cat person. But Pierre, oui.

Nashville is the next stop on Shopbop’s national tour of IRL activations. So far we’ve partnered with them in Dallas and Charleston, but this is our biggest date yet: they converted 75% of our store on 12 South into their own pop-up boutique. It’s mind-boggling. The buildout, which they reuse in different cities across the country, is beautifully executed.

Each day, different brands like The Great, Hunter Belle, and Levi’s are doing special customer-facing brand activations at the store and hosting parties in the city. Throughout the weekend, they’ve invited their top customers and influencers to the store. It’s quite buzzy. Needless to say, it’s great national exposure for us and our sweet little jewel box.

While their Bezos budget sure doesn’t hurt, the magic of the activation comes from the team, who executes each detail with thoughtfulness, accuracy, and kindness. It’s a strong indicator of a good brand when most of their leadership has been there 10+ years. I’ve found a new friend in their Senior Fashion Director, Caroline Maguire (10 years), with plans to grab a matcha when I’m in NYC next week.

I also got some quality time with Hunter Belle, Gen Souer (of Pencil Paper Co), and Mallory Ervin. Kudos to my team for making it happen. I’m at the point now where I just get to show up, talk to people, learn, and check in with the store team. A huge luxury. We celebrated with margaritas at Bar Taco and a little shopping on 12 South.

I could practice more self-restraint. I couldn’t help but get these Elisa Johnson glasses. They’re pure cosplay. No actual utility. Nada. I am actually not* dreading the day when my trusty ol’ eyeballs begin to atrophy and my vanity will finally be justified by the utility of those cool reading glasses that GP always wears. My DMs are full of approvals. And also for these sparkly $99 Steve Madden flats I keep getting compliments on.

Something else I need to work on: stop making assumptions. I have been listening to The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. The third agreement is “don’t make assumptions.” It is our nature to make assumptions hundreds of times a day, and often we’re wrong, because we assume others’ actions reflect our inner world, or we assume reasons for situations, for others’ behavior, etc. Ever since I had that lightbulb moment, I catch myself making assumptions. Either they’re likely wrong, or completely irrelevant to my life. I make judgments. It’s exhausting: I quickly see how much of my energy is put toward fruitlessly assessing things outside of my control.

I’m looking forward to a weekend of no plans. My girls, now 6 and 4.5, are just the best ages right now. I consider this age sacred and want to soak up every minute: maybe I’ll get my hair wet. I have five more work trips in six weeks (NYC, Connecticut, back to NYC again, Dallas, and Nantucket, all before June 24!).

Until I’m full throttle with my business coach, she recommended I read Reboot by Jerry Colonna, the “CEO Whisperer.” His approach blends woo-woo “radical self-reflection” with honest practicality, my favorite flavor of self-help. He’s a regular on biz podcasts: so far I’ve enjoyed his conversations like this one with Tim Ferriss.

We also lost our nanny. Replacing her has been a big emotional and logistical hurdle. Every mom knows that reliable childcare is a major source of mental stability. We’re just now regaining our footing at home. Meanwhile at the office, work is in turbo-speed, white-knuckle mode. Lots of growth (three new store leases!), creative sprints (three massive photoshoots in three months), major national brand collaborations (big, big, big), and internal changes (new hires, restructuring). All good stuff! But hot dayum!

At parties and playgrounds, I hear myself sounding grouchy and ungrateful. Yesterday I had a phone date with a dear friend, a powerful tech exec with three young children, chatting about the challenges (and benefits) of work travel. She said, “I can’t complain because I put myself here. These are my choices and I wouldn’t have it any other way.” I found myself thinking: yes, three cheers for positivity, but if we don’t allow ourselves to complain, to wallow a bit, to feel our feelings... then what? Perseverance is a virtue I have in spades. But I think I’ve tipped into territory that’s ultimately unproductive.

As a leader of my company, I feel guilty complaining. That I should only show strength, and keep any negative feelings to myself. But the older (and wiser, hopefully!) I get, the more I’m allowing myself to feel the shit out of my feelings and let others know how I’m doing. So, hello hi, I’m in it right now!

And that’s okay. This too shall pass. The fact that I wanted to sit down and write today is a good sign. I think I’m starting to see the light!

Frankly, it’s been hard to act sparkly and prioritize my usual brand tenets of hedonism, gratitude, style, and sparkly things because my heart has been elsewhere. This past month I’ve poured a lot of energy into an important cause: advocating for pedestrian safety in Charleston. My sister Gervais Del Porto is spearheading a petition, backed by dozens of local moms and community members, urging the City of Charleston to create a recurring budget line item dedicated to pedestrian safety. It has 2,100 signatures as of this morning. Let me explain.

Our movement began on March 26th, when a longtime family friend, grandmother, kindergarten teacher, cancer survivor, and beloved community member, Annelise Simmons, was struck in a crosswalk by a pickup truck and killed at 8am at Broad and King Streets. Days after Annelise, another pedestrian was killed in Mt. Pleasant. Weeks prior, two young parents were struck in a Meeting Street crosswalk near the Dewberry Hotel.

When my downtown mom friend group heard about Annelise’s death, many of us were shocked but not surprised. Anyone who lives or walks downtown knows Charleston is terrifying as a pedestrian. Drivers run stop signs and red lights, and fly through crosswalks, often distracted by their phones. It is lawless. Many parents do not let their children walk to school.

Charleston is sold as a charming, walkable city. But a dirty secret is out of the bag. Charleston is ranked the 9th deadliest city in the nation for pedestrian safety. Between 2018 and 2024, there were 1,800 pedestrian accidents and 150+ deaths. Despite this, the city has little consistent funding for even the most basic infrastructure, from repainting faded crosswalks to retiming signals. Our city prioritizes cars and rampant development over the wellbeing of its residents, children, and visitors.

Next time you’re downtown, look around. You can’t unsee this gross neglect. To me, the deteriorated infrastructure signals to drivers that pedestrians don’t matter. This experience has changed me - hopefully for the better. I’m trying not to harden into crotchety local screaming at dudes in pick-up trucks to slow down.

The city is responding. The core organizing group of moms has a meeting with the mayor coming up. My Kindgergarten daughter asked if she can come with a handmade sign: “Please make our streets safer.” Wish us luck. I am proud of our coalition of moms and greater community!

Another proud moment: we opened a store in Nantucket. Not a pop-up. An actual store, open for at least a couple of years. We are so excited to put roots down in this special community. We have an exciting collaboration coming out to celebrate.

And more pride stems from two new ‘in store only’ activations that speak to our craft, quality, and quirk! In this age of endless scrolling and dupes, I am craving high-quality, in person store experiences that feels more like crafting with friends than shopping.

Our famous shell bar has returned to CHS and ACK stores. I picture it like making a super chic, special version of your favorite summer camp jewelry. We’ve spent months curating an elevated edit — semi-precious gemstone fish, pearls, natural shells, mother-of-pearl pendants. All super special. Design something totally unique for yourself. It’s fun and funky! Get weird.

Also, I’m so pleased my ‘funky gemstone’ necklaces have been a hit! Each one is unique, like a little craft project. A delicate strand of lapis and turquoise anchored by an eclectic mix of semiprecious gemstone gumballs and rondels, handblown Murano beads, and gold beads. For the anti-algorithmic dresser. Which one will choose you?

These $99 shoes are just the neutral-yet-punchy counterpoint I need to funk-ify my summer sundresses. Sold out for months, they’re back. 10/10 recommend. Sparkly, bare and comfy, too.

Also I’m influencer-adjacent now, which means I get free stuff! Fun perk. Don’t worry, I only tout things I actually use and love. My latest discovery is Sonesie, Pamela Anderson’s vegan skincare line. I recently met her CEO Kailey, who is not only a smart megababe biznass lady but also a hardcore skincare formulation scientist. She’s off harvesting skin-boosting kale in Alaska right now. No joke. This barrier repair creme is wildly good. My skin drank it up. I also slathered if over my husband’s post-sailing-regatta face and I swear he looked healed in the morning.

Most of us have HPV. And some of us have the gnarly strands that cause head and neck cancer and cervical cancer, which sadly took one of my best friends in 2021. I thought I would bounce back in a few days, but 20 days later I’m still not fully recovered. Overall, I am extremely grateful this surgery was more of a temporary inconvenience, and yet another reminder to never take my health and strength for granted.

Convalescence was no joke. I thought I would bounce back within a few days, but this operation really did me in. Physically, I was zapped (and bummed I can’t workout or lift anything for another month). And the anesthesia gave me a temporary lobotomy. My executive and creative functioning are just now coming back online. A glimmer!

I hardcore convalesced in bed, trying my damndest not to let my brain rot in the deep, dark black hole of social media. I thought about how people convalesced before iPhones. Frida Kahlo painting masterpieces in her full body cast. While I fell short of that, I did read Gisèle Pelicot’s memoir, the accompanying New Yorker bio, and her daughter’s memoir (someone get me a gold star sticker!). I’d slip on my Rothy’s clogs (never thought I would say that) to putz out to my piazza and read in the sunshine under an antique quilt. I spent a lot of time planning my spring garden, reading, observing sun patterns, and making plant lists.

I also somehow did a lot of work. I planned with my team our massive three day photoshoot we pulled off last week. We are also designing a collection with a major influencer to launch this fall. She has impeccable taste and is pushing me and my team to execute at an even higher level than usual. I recently listened to an interview with Kelly Wearstler, one of my business and design heroes. She mentioned the word “curiosity” probably 100 times. I want to keep pushing, to stay curious, to be at the front of the wave, not the back white water. I believe this influencer shares that same ethos.

My brand also had a huge event with Shopbop, who took over Charleston last week. One night, Shopbop hosted an influencer event at my store, which was a pinch me moment for sure. It took every ounce of my energy to get my tired post-surgery ass out of bed, put on real clothes and makeup, and do my founder song and dance. But it was worth it, and fun to leave the house after a week.

These women have incredible influence - my time with them creates infinitely more impact than an old school desk side with a Vogue market editor. They are the new fashion editors, their feeds and Substacks the new major magazines. Chelsea Handegan shared her unique, insightful perspective about the Amazon-backed takeover in Charleston. I suggest you read it. Her last line triggered me (in a good way): “Substance over scale.”

I feel like every entrepreneur has a nagging question that never escapes them on their journey. For me, it’s always: How do we scale without losing the magic? How do we get bigger but keep things feeling small, special, and weird? Is bigger even better? I constantly address this with my team.

How do I balance “substance over scale” when it comes to AI? After three years, one of our beloved marketing team members flew the nest to NYC. She handled our copywriting, with my oversight and training. Given how much content we churn out (we are just as much a content business as a jewelry business, it feels like), copy is a big time suck. My leadership team and I are talking about AI systems. Instead of hiring a new person, we invest in several AI systems to be managed by multiple people. Specifically, training Claude to be our in-house copywriter. Let’s see if Claude has the chops. Can it achieve substance (a personal voice, warmth, realness) in support of scale so that I, the founder, can spend my time on Substack, growth strategy, design, and not spend 15 hours a week writing brand copy? We shall see.

I’m going to Miami at the end of the month. The scars are not cute, so I’ll be rocking one-pieces despite my best bikini bod efforts. Are we still on the Hunza G train? I probably need to branch out. If you want a sicko distraction from everyday life, then I recommend the aforementioned memoir by Gisele Pelicot. I had a lively discussion with my dear friend Sarah Moriarty, the head of Charleston’s Literary Festival, about Gisele’s commitment to moving on from her trauma, and not wallowing, and how that was negatively perceived by some. Fascinating read.

We hosted the cult-fave, fast-growing (40 stores globally!) Spanish footwear brand Flabelus in Charleston. Their founder Beatriz, my sister Curry, and I kicked things off with a cozy dinner at Leon’s, followed by a buzzy brand activation at the studio of my dear friend — and talented painter/best hugger in town — . Then an intimate founders dinner at The Dunlin, the new Auberge resort designed by Amanda Lindroth.

Our two-day Flabelus-founder-fete left me feeling JAZZED. I learned a lot (AI ‘brains’, pop-up strategy for the UAE, scheming a Mexico City trunk show / retreat…).

After a 6am workout and carpool, I hopped on a plane to New York. My third trip in three months, which I love.

My visit was mainly to meet with Rebecca Minkoff and record her podcast, Superwomen. We met for martinis and showed her my designs. It was heaven. Look at her HART necklace stack! Girlfriend knows how to mix her metals.

I’m honored to be a guest on Rebecca’s show. She is a true powerhouse and also generous of spirit. The recording flew by. We could have gabbed for hours. My episode airs in about a month.

My Minkoff martini was followed by dinner (and one more ‘tini) with my cousin, Louisa Ballou, at the buzzy and timeless Cafe Chelsea inside The Hotel Chelsea. Ten out of ten. No wonder it’s on this list.

Now, my small victory!

I refused to lug a heavy winter coat on this trip. Being cold is NOT chic, I know. But I hate the schlep of it all. So instead I warmed from the inside out: Uniqlo HeatTech underneath along with, crucially, knee-high wool socks (inspired by this video). Cozy to my core, I was liberated from my coat and rocked my favorite vintage leather jacket instead. Highly recommend.

I stayed at The Marlton, my favorite hotel for work trips. I immediately unpack and tidy upon arrival.

On the vanity: a longtime favorite 32” long-link chain styled as a lariat, plus a vintage locket. I love mixing old charms with my new designs - the juxtaposing effect is fresh and vibrant (and 100% unique). If you have vintage charms or lockets, bring them to one of our stores or events. We’ll happily add it to one of our chains for some mixed magic…!

It was a quick 24-hour trip, so I edited my beauty bag down to the essentials. Like Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk foundation, Charlotte Tilbury brow wand, and my friend Jenna’s skincare Line (her Balance Oil, not pictured, is non-negotiable). All of my faves are linked here.

When it comes to fashion, I rarely buy things brand-new at full price. But I will invest in good basics. I wore my friend perfect blue shirt for the podcast because I wanted to feel relaxed, fresh, and timeless. Mission accomplished. Fact: Gwyneth Paltrow is also a big fan of this shirt. Yes I am aware that I mention GP in every single Substack.

Even rarer for me than full price is fast fashion. But I popped into & Other Stories and was seduced by these superb quality, 100% merino wool sweaters in both peach and grey. They’re slightly sexy in a very understated way. Size down — mine stretched out a little. $118 but 20% off right now!

Most of my jeans are slightly loose, vintage Levi’s. I wanted a ‘sexy jean’ so I stopped by my favorite local boutique, Nette (go if you haven’t), and found my new tush-enhancing faves: for sexy, try Agolde Lana jeans here, here or here. My new favorite fashion follow is Alison Loehnis. The former Net-a-Porter President oozes her exquisite taste in such delightful, practical, soothing content. I adore her ‘My Take’ series. She behooves us to “always, always wear a necklace.” Couldn’t agree more!!

Winter has sunk its cold, grey teeth in and refuses to release its bite. The extent to which cold zaps my mood is… impressive. Winter Harty is antisocial, not especially creative or stylish, grumpy, lazy (the amount of booked-but-unattended workout classes is shameful). While I understand the healer’s argument to embrace the seasonal slowing down (trees shedding leaves, etc.), but a tree I am not, so I still feel compelled to try to burn through the overcast with a little internal sunshine. These are a few ways I’m channeling early spring fever and wanderlust.

By this point in winter, I always start to itch — for color, for warmth, for somewhere else. I find myself reaching for things that sparkle a little, play music from farther south, and hint at the season I want to be in, even if I’m not there yet.

Satisfying my Wanderlust
Nothing like quickly expiring Delta One upgrades (direct from ATL!) and a very supportive husband to inspire a 47-hour jaunt to Marrakech. I landed at 7am, dropped my bags at Riad Mena, linked up with my local guide, and was immediately up to my eyeballs in zellige tiles, brass fittings, and Berber textiles. Outside: a kaleidoscope. Inside: quiet reflection. I enjoyed nearly every minute alone with my book and journal (okay, and some ‘gramming, I’m no saint). I can’t wait to return to this impressive country. Tangier is next.

Buena Vista Social Club
I love how music immediately raises - and fine tunes - the vibe of my home. I’m officially maxed out on wintery jazz. I recently hosted girlfriends for game night (Boggle!) and they happily Boggled to this delightful album, a Hagerty family favorite. The guitar teleports me somewhere farther south and back to my childhood, to my mom’s summer parties in her Alhambra-inspired garden, the sound of people lingering and laughing in the loggia.

Colorful Pants!
I have a soft spot for Etro. The maximalist Italian house’s prints toe the delicate, amusing line between tacky retiree… and Keith and Patti Richards in Turks + Caicos. I also enjoy how borderline Etro’s pieces make the basic Southern belles at the yacht club nervous. Is Hart tacky, or is she a fucking sartorial snowflake? What an absolute sicko I am! Anyway, these ikat pants are certified cool and are a welcome break from the jeans-and-sweater rut. Old, via TRR, per usual.

Summer Wear-Testing
I’m currently wear-testing 2026 versions of our now-iconic in-store summer shell bar — where you can DIY a summery, funky, one-of-a-kind necklace with pearls, shells, gemstone fish, odd beads. It’s imperfect, joyful and exactly what I want to wear now, not just in May when it officially hits our stores. I’d happily wear this quirky necklace all winter with a chunky sweater.

Until then: our vibrant new enamel bezel collection of earrings, charms, and cords are scratching the itch for color. The chartreuse earrings almost have a waitlist!

Nantucket Store Design
We’re opening a permanent store in Nantucket this spring. The task of moodboarding my vision (to brief our interior designer) immediately dethroned the most pertinent items on my to-do list. It was fun to inhabit that headspace — summer in Nantucket, oh boy! A pinch-me moment for my job. My final brief: “The store should feel like the Nantucket home of a jet-setting, bohemian cool girl who hasn’t quite abandoned her preppy, traditional roots hammered home by her genteel grandmother. Not the stuffy, overly proper home of a well-bred, uptight heiress, it’s where she hosts barefoot, full moon lobster bakes… The overall mood is vibrant and layered, yet restrained and considered. A balance of East Coast classicism and worldly bohemia — polished, but always a little undone.”

Add a Palm

My favorite cheap domestic goddess hack that channels spring/summer is to snip the biggest palm you can find. I leave heavy duty shears in my car so I’m ready to harvest at moment’s notice from our office parking lot or my sister’s or mom’s garden. Instant tropical vibes. Last a few weeks, too!

Spring Shoes with Socks
My heavy winter boots remain unworn thus far. This season, I refuse to be weighed down by some black hunk of rubber lug sole. I want to feel spring in my Raynaud’s toes, damnit! So I’ve been cozying up spring shoes — fisherman sandals, Mary Janes, ballets - with colorful socks. I suggest you try this styling hack if your climate allows. Ugh fashion’s ivory tower is signaling Mary Janes are on the way out. I don’t care! I just bought this pair from the fast-growing Spanish brand Flabelus. Proud to say we are about to do some big brand events with them in Charleston, including an Auberge dinner with their chic founder, Beatriz! I can’t wait to meet her.

Spring Garden Planting
I’m planning my next round of garden plantings — asking myself, what would Loutrell Briggs do? (The great Charleston landscape designer of the 1930s.) Traditional and native downstairs. Upstairs, citrus and olive for my solar-blasted second floor piazza. I’m enjoying the research immensely. Pinterest is helpful, but I’ve gone full analog — a dedicated notebook for sketches, notes, printouts. The domestic arts demand real thought and effort, which deserve hardcopy documentation. One day, I hope my girls discover this journal when I’m dead and get inspired for their own homes - a charming and comforting vision, however morbid. I think about the quality of my post-mortem detritus quite a bit…!

Bad Bunny is my choice kitchen-clean up soundtrack. I have so much more respect and appreciation for his artistry after listening to this episode of Switched on Pop, one of my favorite podcasts, which breaks down how songs are made and gives a general nerding-out on pop songwriting and music theory. Highly recommend it before his upcoming Super Bowl performance to get a deeper understanding of his music! Ayyyyyy

To reclaim the flush of my youth, I’m particularly drawn to reds. Orange-reds to be exact. The color doesn’t just brighten my lips; it enlivens my entire face. One, the wash of color has an overall skin-brightening (and distracting) effect. It also creates contrast with my green eyes.

On Application. I apply these lippies the same way every time. I dab lipstick directly in the middle of my lips and use my fingers to smudge the pigment outward for a blur effect. I never apply heavily from the tube. It’s all about the blurred, just-heavily-made-out-with-a-crush look. I smoosh the color slightly over the edge of my lip for a lip-liner effect. The leftover color on my finger? Rose Marie Swift (see below!) taught me to dab it into cheeks (not too low - never below the nostril) and even onto my eyelids.

RMS / Lip2Cheek / Beloved
I love this product so much I designed a lipstick locket so I could reapply as much as I damn well please - rouge en route! (See more of our fabulous fall collaboration here). GOOP just featured the locket in their V-Day gift guide (eek!). Beloved is super buildable and just easy. I also leave a pot in my car. It’s a go-to travel item for me. For: everyday, travel, weekender bag.

Merit / Signature Lightweight Lipstick / Court
On our last photoshoot we used a terracotta red on our model, which inspired me to switch it up. I am madly in love with this color, a departure from my usual reds. Very flattering, easy to apply, a big winner. I want to try more Merit. Big fan. For: everyday, date night, office.

Gucci Westman / Lip Suede Matte Lipstick / Le Rouge
The absolute perfect shade of tomato-red. My god, it’s so good. It feels like it was made for a Cameron Diaz red carpet moment. Super pigmented, a little goes a long way. I apply hardly any. Downside is that demands some focus and a mirror. And feels a little dry - but it looks Gucci recently reformulated it with moisturizing hyaluronic acid. For: cocktail party, special event.

Violette / Bisou Balm / Bonbon Coquelicot
What this lipstick lacks in staying power, it makes up for in ease and moisture. It’s a fool-proof tinted balm. For: A coffee run, before a workout class, playground.

Charlotte Tilbury / Lip Cheat / Pink Venus
Technically a lip liner, not a stick, but I use it for all-over color. Absolutely perfect 10/10 for a full, peachy pout. Super natural. Not too drying. Makes my lips look plumpppp (p.s. I never got filler! I chickened out!). For: everyday, office.

P.S. I HART THIS:
For evening bags, I mostly prefer vintage. They add so much anti-algorithmic character to an outfit. I’ve long loved silver mesh bags from the 1910s–30s. Distinct, vintage yet thoroughly modern. Think art deco flappers meets rocker chain mail with a hint of Paco Rabanne.

Giving eclectic cool girl / Mary-Kate Olsen energy, they are abundant and affordable on Etsy. Search ‘metal mesh bag’ or ‘Whiting & Davis.’ I loved reading this history of this legendary American bag brand. News to me: the iconic Elsa Schiaparelli collaborated with the brand in the 1930s (here’s one). If Elsa approved of this timeless material, clearly we’re onto something.

Many can only fit a lipstick, an ID and a credit card. No phone. No problem. Lately I’ve been loving leaving my phone in the car (or asking my husband to carry his) during nights out. For my next event, I’d love to tote this gem with just a lipstick inside. Being digitally unburdened is chic!

Speaker in My Bathroom: Sonos is finicky as a filly. I loathe starting my morning by thumb-wrestling with this twitchy f*ckin app. So I got a Bluetooth speaker for my bathroom to listen to BBC classical music (a la Soho House). The Marshall Action III speaker was inspired by a stay at The Douglas Hotel in Savannah. I also love turning on soothing tunes when my girls are in the tub. A little Bossa Nova Barbie tubby time…

Eucalyptus in My Shower: While we’re in my bathroom… I buy sprays of eucalyptus from Trader Joe’s to tie to beneath my shower head. Not quite an Aman spa, but it feels fancy. And fragrant AF.

Crossfade Playback Setting on Spotify: I am a music nut, always listening to something. I deplore that awkward gap of silence (especially when hosting friends) between songs. The “crossfade” playback setting in Spotify creates a continuous stream of music. Choose an overlap between 1–12 seconds. Google it!

Wearing Sneakers Around the House: If I know I’m going to be on my feet for more than 15 minutes, I lace up some geriatric-cool New Balance 990s. Charvet slippers are undeniably chicer, but I need more support. This move saves my back, makes housework more comfortable, and mitigates my paranoia of developing plantar fasciitis.

Being Intentional About Colorful Socks: Socks were always a styling afterthought until last year. Neutral or unnoticed. But I’ve embraced socks as an outfit punctuation point (mostly !!!). “Her Socks” by Le Bon Shoppe are inexpensive, don’t slip, and come in bangin’ colors. A big unlock!

Half Decaf Coffee: I love, love, love coffee. An ex-boyfriend of mine gave up caffeine for a summer, and because I was lost and delusional, I decided I should too. It was probably mostly due to our poor relationship, but I got depressed without daily caffeine. I immediately came to my senses, dumped him, and returned to my beloved coffee. Problem is I want to drink loads of it. So I have a pretty Le Creuset jar in which I concoct a mix of half decaf, half regular (Whole Foods brand). ++ heavy cream, always! By the way, Gwyneth Paltrow also swears by heavy cream. The effect reminds me of bulletproof coffee (remember that?). Oh so satisfying.

Weaning Off Melatonin: There was a period where I was taking 5–10 mg three nights a week. Until I heard on a podcast (can’t recall which one) that most people are way-overdosing on melatonin, and that 1–2 mg is more than sufficient. I drastically reduced my intake, and now I hardly use it anymore. Reading on Kindle lulls me to sleep (see next!).

Paperwhite Kindle: My love grows stronger each year for this simple little black and white device (plus the Libby app!). I always read at least 30 minutes before bed (no bedside phone allowed! no 'm’am). But the main benefit: I almost always have to pee around 2 a.m. I usually read for 20–30 minutes once I snuggle back in bed. No reading light needed, leaving my sleeping husband undisturbed.

Considered Dog Collars: I never really cared about the aesthetic of my dogs’ collars. I usually cheaped out and settled for some boring nylon blend from Petco. I recently upgraded my pooches with these western concho belt inspired collars. They look so handsome!

A Dedicated Candle Drawer: Pure luxury is opening the top drawer of the sideboard in my dining room, revealing neat rows of yummy scented candles (Candlefish, Diptyque) ready for the taking. I buy them in bulk. The luxurious abundance of it all makes me ridiculously happy.

I am so proud of our recent photoshoot for an exciting new collection dropping at the end of the month at HART. The model, the styling, the makeup, the jewels, the team work. It all came together so magically and I am chomping at the bit to share the finished images. Here’s a preview from that very happy shoot day at my house last week!

This is when I naturally slip into reflection mode. When dreaming feels useful. I laser focus on gratitude and channel that abundance mindset into the year ahead.

Let’s level-set first. Because talk about ‘manifesting’ can feel so self-involved, indulgent. If I have my health, a safe roof over my head, my kids tucked safely in bed, I have won the lottery. The rest is frosting. But let’s have some fun, shall we, and rub that metaphorical genie bottle?

I start looking back at the year with softness and peeking ahead with curiosity. What do I want to call in? Community. Friendship. Beauty. And just as important, how do I want to feel? Generous. Connected. Loved. Strong. Grounded.

To me, manifestation is about getting clear on what I want and why I want it, reprogramming my self-talk, taking aligned action each day, and then letting go and trusting the universe to do its work. Here are some tools and resources that have helped me along the way.

Getting clear on the what I want and the why I want it
Learning the spiritual mechanics of the universe, or how Lacy Phillips sees it, changed my life. This leads me to To Be Magnetic, Lacy’s (virtual) platform that I’ve followed for eight years. It changed the way I understand manifestation energetics. We manifest from taking aligned action rooted in our authentic self worth. Dip your toe into the woo-woo depths with this TBM podcast episode.

For the past two years, I’ve reflected on my ‘Authentic Code’, filtering an honest look - ‘peeling back the onion layers’ - at my deepest needs and desires through soul reflection, childhood wounds, and external programming.

I ask myself, what do I really, truly want… and why do I want it? From soulful essentials to the superficial shit… do I want that kickass wardrobe because of pain, shame, or childhood programming? Or because it’s how my deepest inner knowing wants to express her truest self?

I manifest a goal when the desire comes from the often-hidden, honest part of myself - and do the reprogramming work so that I feel truly deserving of it.

And why not dream as big as possible? The universe isn’t on a budget. I designed my Flying Pig pendant and charm to encapsulate this optimism.

Pen to paper: assess the last year and make lists for what’s next

The act of writing your list is powerful. Like sending repeated bat signals - pew pew pew! - to the universe to co-create with you.

Sometimes it’s hard to just attack a blank page with a list of your wildest dreams. For those craving some structure, I recommend a Wheel of Life template (google it!), which is divided into eight segments including career, travel, family, and more. Fun fact: HART has our own branded Wheel of Life in our stores to inspire customers to do some soul searching before picking out a charm that corresponds with what they want to call in.

I spend about 60-90 minutes reflecting on what went well and where I was lacking (with ease and gratitude - no point in beating myself up). Then I redo the wheel for the upcoming year based on those insights.

This list isn’t a set it and forget it Ronco rotisserie roaster, people! An ongoing, interactive process, the more I revisit it, the more powerful my manifestation becomes. And let’s face it, I’m more likely to reengage long-term if it’s pretty! So I take the effort to create a yummy, sensorial altar-like set-up. A nice journal (XL Moleskin), expensive candles, a clean desk, sunbeams.

Add visuals to your list

Visualization of your goals is key. When creating your vision board, don’t limit yourself to that old stack of magazines. The full spectrum of your dream life likely isn’t hiding in the March 2024 issue of Architectural Digest.

Get specific. And get to Pinterest and Instagram. I take screengrabs from accounts of my “expanders”: TBM’s term for inspirational people whose lives I want to emulate in some capacity (a successful entrepreneurial mom, an artist). I print them out, collage them by category (work, community, family, etc). I rewrite my wish list with pen and watercolor around them - a colorful send off to the universe. Extra step: I also use Canva to create digital visionboards for my laptop and iPhone screensavers.

Trusting the universe and letting go
Trust that what isn’t for you isn’t going to go by you. This is hard for me, because I’m human. Controlling. Impatient. Greedy at times. This fault inspired my Let Go talisman - a wearable reminder to release the fear mentality.

Helpful charms aside, this is where my spiritual library comes in handy, snapping me back into an abundance mindset when I’m white knuckling fear or need. Like how a religious person returns to their Bible in tough times, I return to these resources when I need a reminder to let go:

1. Letting Go meditation by Donna D’Cruz. nine minutes of bliss.
   

2. The Seven Laws of Spiritual Success by Deepak Chopra always snaps me back into trust and abundance mindset.

3. Eckhart Tolle’s book A New Earth, about operating from soul versus ego. He unpacks it in this podcast series with Oprah.

4. The Secret, a little cheesy I know, but Rhonda Byrne really did round up the best digestible humdingers about the Law of Attraction.

5. The Artist’s Way, which I revisit again and again. It changed my perspective on what being creative really means, and the spiritual importance of nourishing our inner child artist. The morning pages exercise alone is life changing. Why is it so hard to stick with habits that make us feel so good?

Calm your nervous system, empty your brain

While audiobooks and podcasts, even ones about manifesting and spirituality, are productive and wonderful, I’ve learned I need an empty brain and zero input to call in new things.

I’m not a sit on a pillow in silence kind of gal. Finishing a five day silent meditation retreat at the Southern Dharma Center in North Carolina was impactful but also really challenging and honestly, oh so painfully boring, for me. Maybe you’d dig it?

Meditation these days looks more like lying on my porch sofa in a sunbeam and listening to a binaural beat track on loop. Taking my dogs on long walks without my phone. Watering my plants. Driving with zero input - not even music. Just being alone with my thoughts and letting the subconscious percolate to the surface.

Take aligned action each day

I find this step absolutely magical. It’s astounding how, when you take even a baby step in the direction of your dreams, an invisible helping hand appears. Or gives you a little encouraging pat on the bottom. Synchronicity, man. So COOL!

Conversely, if you’re working toward a goal and receiving negative feedback, that’s a gift too. It’s just emotional data. The key is to keep going, keep trying, and be receptive to the fact that your list may not manifest exactly how you pictured it.

I am DEEPLY suspicious of viral beauty products, but I finally caved and bought Rhode’s glazing milk. And I am glowing!

Unlike many of my chic, talented hot mom friends who attend regularly, I don’t do the Dance (Sweat) series. I am simply not coordinated. The whole time I feel like I’m miserably failing at a cheerleading tryout with the veteran varsity squad hitting all their marks in front of me while I’m spinning in circles like a big dork. I prefer The Sculpt series. Just me and my mat.

It feels so good to sweat and move to fun music. I try to block out the misery of my burning buns by daydreaming about work projects. Today the creative gods blessed me with a couple of new pendant ideas. I also was thinking about this Substack and rushed home to type and sketch.

I feel guilty that I am not writing more often. But, be honest, do you even miss me? There’s so much good content out there. It’s hard to keep up. All the business playbooks say for founders to post, post, post! But sometimes I feel like I’m shouting into an abyss. On a recent walk with my buddy Raven Roxanne, we debated - “Is it better to post quality over quantity on Substack?” Raven adamantly stomped her sneaker - “Quality!” I agree. Assuming this feels like quality content to y’all…

It’s party season in Charleston. Fuck, when is it not, actually? Partying is our city’s favorite pastime, the cornerstone of our culture. Unbridled hedonism, and also being “like, really, really pretty”. I know that is hyperbole, but it sometimes does feel like Charleston’s only contribution to the GDP is being a beautiful backdrop for Instagram content. The Sorelle-effect is spreading - our favorite dusty old dives are all getting glow-ups and impossible Resy waitlists. Real estate prices have confirmed its spot as firmly planted in the echelon of mega-rich people playgrounds (not full-time residents) like Jackson Hole, Palm Beach, Aspen, etc. I digress.

Back to parties. You know you’re approaching 40 when you eagerly get your face shot up with toxins ahead of the holiday circuit. My genetics have me facing a problem that no super serum can solve – the dreaded sag. So I visited Skin Pharm, where Carlyn loaded me up with Dysport. For lift, we jabbed my hairline. We nuked my elevens. And also my neck! One morning a little waddle appeared - a concerning development for a vain Leo who takes a LOT of necklace selfies. We shot up my jawline and my neck and I must say it has helped! Highly recommend some neck botox.

This week I have an appointment for filler. I am on the fence. Should I get just a little bit? Does Gwyneth Paltrow do filler? I just wanna look like her; not a MAGA fembot. After many passes through TSA and seeing Kristi Noem on the screen warning us about border security, I’m starting to feel less inclined to do filler. Don’t say you don’t know what I’m talking about.

Let’s move to the neck-down, shall we? My first draft of this email had me dreaming up holiday outfit ideas for y’all. Finding commissionable links to new dresses, shoes, etc. But I couldn’t muster the energy and honestly I’m not inspired to shop for new things and I don’t want to share stuff I wouldn’t actually wear. So I’ve pillaged my closet instead and hopefully will inspire you to do the same.

Last weekend’s party circuit was definitely not black tie but I thought, why the hell not. When my lovely hostess friend texted me “go bonkers,” I took it as an invitation to rock this fantastic beaded dress I got at The Church Mouse in Palm Beach for $45. No regrets. I styled them with these awesome heart earrings. I forgot how much I love them!

Here I am playing with color and texture. Slinky vintage silk against Guest & Residence fuzzy cashmere. The little woven bag is from a market in Mexico. Margaux demi ballets. Yummy patent version here.

A yellow dress! The color feels fitting year-round. And blondes look good in yellow. Especially with a smudge of a red lip. Do you like my abominable snowman jacket? Long dresses + flats feel chic.

I like to keep people guessing. Throw a chic LBD off balance by embracing a dorky sock-heel combo in cheesy Christmas colors.

I love a black leather mini with fishnet tights. I paired it with a vintage 80s sequin top. But this could also look nice with a simple knit on top. The Anine Bing boots are kinda bitchy looking, so comfortable and worth the price. Here and here.

Not new. But I’ve recently whipped up Allison Roman’s famous chickpea stew and dayummmm it is so delish, nourishing, and easy. I hadn’t cooked it in a couple of years. A friend recently had her second baby so I brought it to her and it was a big hit. I love Allison’s recent campaign with Margaux shoes. It’d be a dream to see her in my jewelry. Manifesting it!

Also, Laura Cannell’s beautiful, haunting album Brightly Shone the Moon. I listened to the entire thing while gazing out an airplane window and got teary-eyed.

Consider me very jolly. I want to do ALL. THE. THINGS. The crafts, the parties, the wrapping, the caroling! Before holiday stress and inevitable hangovers hit and my inner introvert gets anxious, my brain is blissfully merry and bright. Life is the best party we’ll ever be invited to. So let’s polish the good silver!

Sure, this might be work procrastination in disguise. But mostly it’s gratitude manifested as nesting, crafting, and merrymaking. I also feel an almost primal urge to create holiday magic for my daughters, ages 5 and 4. Not by showering them with more new stuff, but by slowing down, celebrating what we already have, and literally dressing it up. To show them that hedonism is lovely, yes, but best when it’s not measured in buying only shiny and new (although we do love that sometimes!).

This year my girls will help me set a pretty table, polish the silver, string a dried-orange garland, plant bulbs, scrub wax off candelabras, and take cozy walks to hand-deliver thank-you notes with our pups in tow. (“By hand” is the supreme chicest, isn’t it.)

Why do we deck the halls, after all? To celebrate our homes and the friends and family who dance, cry, and laugh inside them.

Here’s how I’m summoning joy this season through craft, vintage, and nostalgia:

Punch it up

A pedestal crystal punch bowl is perfectly kitsch and just feels really good right now. I’ll invite some friends over for a midweek tipple of spiked eggnog and Christmas jazz. But the OTT bowl begs for me to throw a proper punch-only party. No civilized wine allowed, no no! My guests will get absolutely smashed. I also bought a giant antique silver punch bowl to use as an ice bucket for champagne on Christmas Eve. eBay is a treasure trove for affordable second-hand ones that just need a good polishing.

DIY Kiddo Wrapping Paper

What started as a desperate swing for toddler entertainment over a long Christmas break has become a sweet family tradition. Kid art is not just sweet — it’s chic. I arm my daughters with paint and let them go wild on a wide roll of butcher paper. Counterbalance the chaos by splurging on nice velvet ribbon — who doesn’t love a velvet ribbon (plus, it can be re-used). This year I’m reigning in the madness a bit with a limited palette of subdued ring three colors and geometric stamps.

Eclectic Tabletop

I love an eclectic table, partly because I positively bombed my wedding registry and I don’t own 12 matching anything. Damn it! Regret that. Moving on. A printed tablecloth can quickly transform that brown, boring off-duty dining table into a beacon of joy. For a dinner party, I lean into the mishmash with colored glass, bamboo flatware, vibrant candles, and mismatched plates. Back to eBay, where I scored a sprawling Italian pink weave and a couple vintage Ralph Lauren florals and plaids. Quirky, chintzy and happy! Who cares if it all doesn’t match perfectly?

Hanging Ornaments from the Chandelier

I love hanging bulb ornaments from my chandelier. The glass bulbs are from Candlefish in Charleston. I like them because of the odd mix of sizes and that the metallic colors are decidedly not Christmassy – pink, turquoise, cobalt, gunmetal. P.S. shameless plug for my fish and horseshoe ornaments! They are solid brass, heirloom quality! And are so cool, I included a brass ring so they can live on as bag charms or key rings after the holidays.

Hand-Painted Wooden Nutcrackers

Since I have neither the patience nor digit coordination to needlepoint stockings, over the years I have painted a wooden nutcracker for my family members. Each one has little details - dates, nicknames, symbols, zodiacs - that represent the family member. I took inspiration from antique Swedish marriage chests. I must say they are quite charming and my greatest hope is that my girls will fight over them when I’m dead.

Paper Chains and Other DIY Crafts

Last year I made paper chains with my girls. Incredibly festive and fun. Plus, easy clean-up (no glue, sequin or glitter aftermath). This year we’ll make even more to drape up our front stairway. The key is to - not shockingly - hunt for really good paper with quality colors. Get thee to your local art store! Another tradition I’m also bringing back: my ornament-decorating party with girlfriends. Wooden ornaments from Michael’s get gussied up with glitter, paint, glue, crystals. Nothing fancy, but very sentimental.

P.S. I Hart This

The brandy (or bourbon) dog barrel is my best holiday party trick of all time. My dog Bluebell loves his (he’s a big newfy, he can handle the load). At parties he is swarmed with tipsy selfies, head pats and bear hugs. Sorry when he sheds on your tuxedo. But so worth it. May I suggest these also make great gifts for any fellow big dog lovers out there.

Maybe this makes me uncool but I quite immensely indulge in Christmas music. A few years ago I made this playlist, christened Santa Baby. I keep adding to it throughout the season. Recent additions include twinkly reveries from Oscar Peterson’s Christmas album.

The landlords said we could have the space, but we had to open quickly — in less than three weeks — which meant our team had about literal days to design, plan, and pull everything together. I’m honestly so proud of how it turned out. A million tiny decisions went into this little spot. Huge thanks to our team, especially Bee, for helping bring it all to life.

If you’d asked me a few years ago whether I could concept, design, build out, and open a store in a matter of days, I would have said absolutely not. But we didn’t want to invest in an interior designer for such a short-term lease, so we decided to leap. And leap we did. I had to step in as designer, which forced me to buck up and trust myself. The old Hart would’ve drowned in self-doubt and imposter syndrome, questioning her taste and abilities. But the older I get, the less I care and the more I trust my eye.

I also learned to lean into the scrappiness. Not everything has to look like Soho House (lurv!). We put so much pressure on ourselves to look like an investor-backed brand with endless resources, but in reality we are still very scrappy. And we did it. We pulled it off.

This pop-up has been a real lesson for me in trusting my taste and embracing the quirks instead of apologizing for them. So what if it’s not perfectly polished like the jewel box of a big-budget brand? It’s charming. It’s a little weird. It’s perfectly imperfect. We poured our sweat and hearts into it. It feels like us. It feels like HART.

Layout
Because the space is so small, Bee, Curry and I spent a lot of time mapping out the floor plan. As in, crawling on our hands and knees, taping the dirty ass floor. We expect to be rip-roaring busy over the holidays, so two distinct custom jewelry stations were essential. Fortunately, we already had the central bar table, and our contractor was kind enough to build the custom cash wrap / bar for us. My Product Manager, Kat, worked tirelessly in her free time to sew the skirting fabric I found on Etsy.

Color Scheme
I knew I wanted a jewel-box feel: transporting, enveloping, and memorable, but still calming. The answer? Color drench of a dusty blue, with pops of ochre and marigold for warmth. After five paint samples and a frantic, 30-minute deadline before the painters arrived (a real nail-biter), we landed on Wedgewood Gray.

The far corner of the space had an ugly barn door and shiplap walls, which felt discordant with my cozy vision for the store. The back corner begged for some inviting warmth, color and texture, so I draped the wall with these pleated linen marigold curtains. I intend to hang a piece of art over them, but haven’t found it yet.

Moodboard
Collage moodboards are signatures in our stores, which I have learned to construct myself in my backyard. After years of trial and error, I’ve finally mastered how to build them with glue, nails, .5” birch-finish plywood, cork, batting, and simple ticking fabric.

I cover each one with vintage photos, pages torn from books, post-it notes, editorial images, vintage textiles, and original artwork. Collage is the core of our brand identity — embracing the mix match, the high and the low, the old and the new, the fancy and the quirky. Like a charm necklace or bracelet, the finished result is an entirely unique story made of disparate parts.

Art and Decor
I wanted the space to feel like stepping into a cabinet of curiosities, filled with intriguing art and objects that make you want to linger a little longer and discover what inspires the brand. We didn’t have a huge budget to source fine art and antique objects. So I happily spent a few afternoons in thrift stores and good ole’ Habitat for Humanity hunting for quirky paintings, hardback design books and funky trays, vases, and boxes.

I didn’t want the artwork to be only cut from the same oddball handmade vintage cloth. In need of cool, modern contrast, I pillaged oversized coffee table books for slick photography to frame in simple, cheap frames from Michaels. You’ll see portraits of our muses like Jimi Hendrix and The Rolling Stones. And prints from Andy Warhol and Helen Frankenthaler.

Painting
It has become a bit of a tradition that I paint a large-scale piece for each of our stores. This one measures 5 by 4 feet and was inspired by the palettes and movement of Lee Krasner and Elaine De Kooning. I’m a bit self-conscious about my painting. I’m fully aware there’s ample room for improvement (still learning over here!). But screw it, I’m having fun and it feels nice to have this piece of my heart and soul hanging in the store, even if the composition isn’t perfect!

Lighting
I find lighting to be hard!! But do I love a sconce. Specifically, a pair of sconces. They’re so satisfying and proper. The symmetry says “Look how put-together I am!” but without being snooty. These cordless sconces by Pooky are a low-budget’s bestie since they don’t require hard-wiring. I was also drawn to the wonderfully odd proportions of the Nickey Kehoe woven ‘bonnet’ pendant, which hangs over the cash wrap.

I planted my paperwhite bulbs last week. This sweet little DIY is giving Nancy Meyers holiday energy, which who doesn’t need right about now? If I can do it with my girls, you can do it. Instagram has buckets of tutorials like this. I also loved Alexander’s guide (he is so scrumptious AND helpful and I want to be his bestie!!). Don’t forget the vodka!!!

When the reliable black or brown flat feels boring, I reach for happy, metallic flat like these, which have been tap-dancing on my cerebellum for quite some time. Murano glassware melts my brain!! Maybe I can put my ashes in a custom urn? To up my drinky-drink game, I’ve started collecting the Large Gotos by Laguna B. These heirlooms by Alex Eagle are also collector-worthy and have been on my mind since visiting her cool store in London.

Massive Vintage Earrings

You’ve got to leave the house in 10 minutes and have nothing to wear. Your date is tapping their foot. Fuck it, time to throw on that same black slip dress and roomy vintage Armani blazer from the same party last week. But you can re-energize this trusted base layer with a big-a$$ earring. Preferably by Christian Lacroix and YSL. 1st Dibs is a real treasure trove. Again, I would also love dressing down these earrings with a crewneck sweater and timeless denim.

Comme Si Socks

A punchy colored sock goes a long way. A cherry red sock is like the bat signal to other fashion girlies, and it looks especially cheery with blue denim and brown loafers. A light blue sock sings with patent black loafers. Comme Si is definitely the top shelf choice. But I’m also happy with this red and this Cinderella blue trouser sock by J. Crew.

Oyster roast season is upon us, which means a sea of sameness of hunter green Barbour jackets. They’re classic for a reason, but this golden yellow Barn Jacket ($270) is a welcome beam of sunshine. I adore the color - looks great on blondes esp with a smudge of red lip color - and cozy plaid lining. Be the coolest mom at drop off or the dog park.

It’s been a minute since I’ve shared some fashion thoughts. Today’s letter outlines a few styling musings circulating in my head—and in my digital carts. So let’s get to it, shall we?

A Pop of Leopard

I didn’t own any leopard until a couple of weeks ago. For some reason, my gateway drug to leopard was not “a little pop”—the suggested microdose by many fashion editors. Instead, I went full ham thanks to this vintage trench I scored in Los Angeles. It’s featherlight and a little fancy. Now I’m hooked. This canvas Ganni coat is incessantly meowing at me—the canvas and corduroy beef up the casual ruggedness I want for playground playdates, dog walks, and oyster roasts.

The Long Knotted Gemstone Necklace

There is something very fresh, fun, and easy about the long knotted gemstone necklace this fall. Throw the strand over a dress, a knit, or a simple tee to instantly raise your vibe. We just launched our collaboration with THE Grace Atwood (eeek!!!). Grace is just the coolest and kindest and I am so very proud to collab with her. Her necklace is a modular system composed of one 16” strand of hand-knotted gum balls of malachite and one 16” strand of tiger’s eye. Wear them individually, clasp them together to wear long, or double-wrap them at collar length.

Vintage Armani Blazers

Instead of giving Zara $250 for a landfill-bound blazer, may I suggest perusing TRR for exceptionally made, long-lasting blazers by Armani for under $100? It is likely unwise to share my “Saved Search” terms, but given that I already have eight vintage Armani blazers, I don’t think my closet will suffer.

Tip: they run small. I only search for Large or XL. The men’s section is also great for larger blazers to throw over your shoulders (mini dress + heels!) at a cocktail party.

Loafers

I wear my Freda Salvador loafers several times a week. Besides comfort, the loafer lends a mannish quality that juxtaposes swimmingly with more feminine tops or silky slip dresses. The chunky loafer also serves as a modesty anchor that counterbalances short hemlines. (I do love a mini dress.)

The Carrie Bradshaw Grey Mini Dress

While a mini dress seems counterintuitive for fall, hear me out: it looks smashing with a chunky loafer (see above) and a long trench. My white whale mini dress is this Carrie Bradshaw one. It can easily be styled up or down (loafer vs. heel, trench vs. evening blazer). I often wear this Ref dress in grey—and may also get the “mole” colorway. I’m also tempted by this Norma Kamali terry number.

The Navy Crew Neck Sweater

I am a devoted disciple of the fashion Tao of Alexa Chung, who once told Vogue, “Every time I travel without a navy blue cashmere crewneck, I regret it.” Amen, sister. After enjoying the shit out of this lightweight cashmere navy crewneck for the last 8 months, this ribbed cardigan version feels both classic and sexy (I’d wear it with only the middle buttons).

I’m on the waitlist for this structured cashmere cardigan (very Jenni Kayne / Khaite) in navy—one of those pieces that somehow annoys me to purchase but I know I’ll wear constantly. What’s up with that?

SKIMS Underthings

Also filed under “things I don’t like buying, but end up wearing all the time”: bras and undies. While I am usually skeptical of celebrity-backed brands, I am a big SKIMS fan because their product is super legit. I’m slowly replacing every bra/undie in my drawer with this bra and this pair of undies, which are unequivocally the bomb. The comfort and support are both a solid 10, yet they also feel sexy. But maybe that’s the Kim Kardashian halo—they are super high-waisted undies, after all. This boyfriend longsleeve tee and boxer short are so yummy, I wore them out in public (covered by a chic trench). Oh, and I also got their Soft Lounge Pajamas in Heather Grey.

More daily protein, my lazy girl way: I recently stocked my HQ office shelves with easy things. First, Truvani vanilla protein powder - to shake up with sugar free vanilla almond milk. And also Bare Bones broth in convenient packets. Just add hot water.

If you ever meet me in the flesh, I can be a little awkward. But if you ask me about business, strategy, or mindfulness, I can get in the groove. No martini as social lubricant needed. Since I love talking about this stuff, I thought I’d share some thoughts with you here.

In my last Substack, I shared three tenets—little guiding lights. One of my favorite parts of being an entrepreneur is that each day is different. A business is a classroom. I learn something new every single day. For better or worse, just when I think I can chill on a plateau for a minute, another hill pops up on the horizon, forcing me to buck up and keep going.

Sharpen the Saw

In The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, there’s a parable about a man trying to cut down a tree with a dull saw. The blade keeps getting duller, making the work harder and harder. A passerby suggests, “Why don’t you take a break and sharpen your saw? You’ll cut faster.” The exasperated man snaps back, “I don’t have time for that!”—and keeps sawing in vain.

“Sharpen the saw” has become my shorthand for “just do the damn thing already.” More specifically: invest the time and energy in whatever will ultimately make your job easier or enable you to be more effective. Don’t waste time on shortcuts or B squad bullshit.

What this looks like in real life: While our last CPA firm wasn’t broken, we went through the arduous process of vetting and hiring a new CPA because we knew it would pay dividends—mentally and financially. Another example: investing a few hours into tutorials on how to use AI for your role at work. (Admittedly, this one keeps falling to the bottom of my weekly to-do list!)

Your Brain is Meant to Create, Not to Carry

Sometimes I’ll get a flash of utter brilliance—or at least I think it’s pretty spiffy. My first thought: “Oh, that’s such a good idea, I’ll definitely remember it!” And poof! After I put my girls to bed, the thought has vanished. My ingenious idea—sucked into a black hole—never to be seen again.

No wonder. Your brain is meant to create, not to carry. Although moms seem to effortlessly carry a superhuman mental load, it’s incredibly taxing and stress-inducing. So I write things down. Writing things down literally feels like lifting a physical weight off my shoulders—releasing the invisible burden of trying to remember everything.

My system is simple: the Notes app on my iPhone. I categorize different Notes by topic—new design ideas, marketing strategies, birthday gifts, mantras, books, etc. I even pin them to the top so they’re always handy.

When Hiring, Prioritize Character over Skillset

Of course, certain roles—like accounting or design—demand specific expertise. But in general, I don’t care how talented you are; the biggest predictor for success at HART is character. Curiosity, drive, diligence, kindness, proactiveness.

The industry is constantly changing—new rules, trends, business models, tariffs, algorithms, you name it. The top trait we look for is being “figure-it-out oriented.” Because so much of running a business is simply figuring stuff out.

This is also a great interview question: “Tell me about a time you had to teach yourself something new for work.”

I’ve been listening to a lot of Jeff Buckley lately in anticipation of the new documentary on this extraordinary musician. His debut album, Grace (1994), is widely regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time and often appears on “Top 100” lists. Tragically, Buckley died in 1997—before completing his second album, Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk, which was released posthumously.

As I was writing this series, I realized that a few of them came from The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. I didn’t notice until now how much this book left an impression on me—two decades after reading it in college. I often refer to these mantras in business, but of course they can be applied to just about any facet of life.

Begin with the End in Mind
Don’t ask me about Excel or Physics 101, but one of my superpowers is synthesis. My brain naturally wants to zoom out, take in a lot of information, and connect the dots. Therefore, “Begin with the End in Mind” is fairly easy for me—but sometimes, when my anxiety is in overdrive or there’s a lot going on across my multiple roles (design, brand, marketing—which is often), it’s helpful to stop, pause, and remember the WHYs. Why and how does this ladder up to our brand goal or campaign objective?

At HART, we always kick off meetings with: “What is the purpose of this meeting?” It’s a simple but effective way to make sure everyone is aligned and avoid tangents. I also like to have every deck start with a GOAL slide: what are we trying to achieve here? Company-wide, we constantly remind employees of our bigger-picture vision. It’s funny—I used to think those posters in corporate offices showcasing goals and values were cheesy as hell. But now, I get it. I want a “Begin with the End in Mind” poster in our main conference room.

Be More Prepared Than You Think You Need to Be
Successful people naturally cross their Ts and dot their Is. How else are they rising above average? Not by being passive or doing the bare minimum. I’ve learned this lesson the hard way—I cannot trust myself to do great work on the fly.

My best results come when I’m prepared for every opportunity—good or bad. That means doing my homework. Before meeting someone for the first time, casual or formal, I Google them (in a professional way, not stalker way). I scope out their Instagram and LinkedIn. If it’s a potential brand collab, I study every bit of the brand's website and marketing (and founder bio) before our kick-off call. Research leads to connections, angles, and strategies that may not have otherwise come up.

It sounds obvious, but it surprises me how often people assume “they got it” and skip the homework. My theory: we now have instant access to infinite information on our phones, so people assume they know enough and can “wing it” — like their iPhone is an external brain cloud of data, ready to stream data at any moment.

Other ways this comes to life: prep for photoshoots (I plan every detail - mocking layouts in advance), and packing for work trips— curating feel-good, climate-appropriate outfits in advance is a must.

Being prepared leads to competence which leads to authentic confidence, which leads me to my next tenant.

(Authentic) Confidence is Key

This may sound a bit dick-ish, but the truth is that the vast majority of people enjoy being led (compassionately), being told what to do, and feeling like they’re in good hands with someone capable and kind. That’s why we’re drawn to confidence. Being on the receiving end of confidence lets you relax—you can let someone else drive.

That said, confidence does not equal competence, and there are plenty of talented bullshitters out there making bank. I see you, Madame Supplement Influencer!

Unfortunately, most people (myself included) don’t become truly confident until they’ve had some success. The success-confidence ratio is a fucked-up chicken-or-egg cycle that you have to break by faking it ‘til you make it—bit by bit. I’ve built up confidence over time by double-downing on what I’m naturally good at and recognizing my wins. For example, I think I’m a decent writer and enjoy doing it—hence Substack. I feel way more confident here than vlogging on YouTube or whatever.

I often think about this as a parent: one of my top duties as a mom is to nurture my girls’ confidence by finding out what they’re good at and supporting them to pursue to those things. And, of course, also sprinkling in some healthy doses of character-building experiences :)

Confidence isn’t really about what you already know. It’s trusting yourself to figure things out. That’s 99% of being an entrepreneur or business owner. Interestingly, that trait - the confidence in yourself to figure things out - is exactly what propels entrepreneurs to confidently wade into markets and territories that intimidate others. No risk, no reward.

One practical note: my oldest sister, Gervais Hagerty, is a writer, radio show host, and public speaking coach. I recently hired her to help me prepare (see above, no. 2!!!) for podcast interviews and public speaking. One big lesson I learned from her was to steer the conversation (not in a shady, evasive way!) so I can talk about the things I’m most confident about. When I talk about the things I truly know, it shows—and it draws people in.

I should probably branch out, but my go-to book genre is: enrapturing memoir about a horrific survival saga… preferably in a wild or extreme climate. Maybe I’ll write a Substack about my favorites, which will certainly include what I’m reading now: Papillon, the memoir of Henri Charrière, who in the 1930s was sentenced to life in a penal colony in French Guiana and spent years attempting daring escapes until he finally won his freedom. The true story (and very colorful… I’m a little skeptical in parts) reads like a fever dream.

First, may I briefly blab about some big HART updates: we’re opening a new store (a six-month residency —stay tuned!), launching a major product collaboration with RMS Beauty, a splashy collab with our friend Grace Atwood, and gearing up for fresh product drops (I’m very proud of these new designs). Next week I’m flying to Los Angeles to record a podcast with Whitney Port and style a brand photoshoot. Then I’ll head west again for an event with Sézane in San Francisco. I’m probably forgetting ten other things, but you get the picture.

While fall is clearly go-go-go, the turn of the season always makes me pause and reflect on what I want to call in for the rest of the year (and beyond). Where your intention flows, your energy goes. Here’s what’s been on my mind lately—along with the intentions behind them.

Friendship

Long-lasting, true friendship is deeply important to me. The older I get, the more I revere the friends I have. I first heard this quote in middle school: “A friend to all is a friend to none.” For some reason lately, my subconscious has gripped onto it tightly. Perhaps because I just finished Elyce Arons’ memoir about building Kate Spade (highly recommend). Beyond the brand-building lessons, what struck me most was her tight friend group—thick as thieves since college and their early 20s in New York.

Surface relationships—a quick walk here, a coffee date there—don’t fill my cup like they used to. I’m craving more quality time with my ‘expander’ friends: the ones who push me to dream bigger, have soulful convos, literally go places I’ve never been, and belly laugh a lot. My personal litmus test: “Pay attention to who you’re with when you feel your best.” I am committed to prioritizing my time with those people. Fewer, deeper.

Wardrobe

I am holding off on any fall shopping until the weather gets cooler and I’m forced to turnover my closet. Closet reorganization is an essential step in planning an intentional fall shopping list, because it forces me to assess inventory. With the new season, I like to make a moodboard. Next, I will really study it with my journal. I observe and write down the common threads – a patent loafer, a lace dress, distressed denim. What have you. I do the same with outfits. I take note of the necessary ingredients for certain outfit formulas. Then I take inventory of my closet - what am I missing from my closet in order to recreate that look? Do I have something similar? I will write down what’s missing. Which then becomes my shopping list, based on intentional wardrobe-expanding needs, not capricious dopamine hits that may get worn a few times. This approach has been a shopping gamechanger.

House Design

This November marks a year in our new house. I’m proud of our restraint (i.e. resisting my sometimes maniacal urge to impulsively nest). Instead of rushing into “capital D” decorating, we made a few simple cosmetic updates—mainly painting everything white-ish to chill out the space in order to let us live (and assess our needs in) a more neutral state. We basically plunked down our old furniture in similar layouts as our former house (see my living room below). But now, I feel ready to really design—with some professional help. Decorating is so damn expensive. I want to do things right. This week we’re meeting with an incredibly talented local interior designer to see where it leads. More on that soon!

Garden

My heart is full from the creativity and grounding that comes with gardening. I’m grateful to live in a historic home (c. 1840) shaded by our soulful old oak tree. We’ve made some progress, but there’s more to do. The Charleston Preservation Society asked to include our home on the fall garden tour, and I jumped at it— not only is it a lovely thing to be asked to do, but selfishly, nothing motivates me to get shit done like an external deadline.

To honor the history of the home and our neighborhood, I’ve been studying the iconic work of Charleston landscape designer Loutrel Briggs (1893-1977), taking notes on his layouts and favorite plants, many of which are native (i.e. harder for me to screw up!). I’m about to begin a second round of planting: tea olives, camellias, dogwoods, azaleas, and gardenias along the perimeter. Classic Charleston flora, rooted in Loutrell’s legacy… we just won’t tell him about the astro turf, rest his soul (I freaking LOVE my turf. No regrets there.)

P.S. I Hart This

The Pee-wee Herman documentary touched me deeply. I finished it a huge newfound respect for Paul Reubens’ commitment to his art. I won’t spoil the ending, but the last few minutes left me reflecting on the emotional pain of being socially ostracized, misunderstood or “cancelled.” It’s a sad truth: our culture has a sick kink for tearing successful people down. Paul carried a lot of internal, unresolved pain until literally his dying day. To end on a lighter note, the doc is overall supremely funny, heart-warming and entertaining. Give it a whirl. LMK if you cry like I did.

Wheels up! I am frantically packing up the kiddos, my husband, and a very heavy trunk of jewels for my first trip to Nantucket. I’ll be on the island all of next week (July 13–20) for a custom jewelry residency at the lovely local boutique, For Now. Please leave any island recommendations below!

Since HART has grown, it’s been literal years since I’ve done a solo trunk show (watch what I’m packing here!). The inspiration? I felt the urge to slow down, be a little scrappy, and connect with our community the old-school way. I love doing trunk shows, but as the business has grown, I’ve been pulled away from these events—and I’m excited to dive back in with my jewelry pliers and make custom jewelry (on the spot!) for y’all. I always learn so much from talking to clients: getting feedback, design or marketing inspiration, making new friends. Please tell your friends! I can’t wait to meet the Nantucket community.

Books:
I’ve nearly finished All Fours (woah…). Next on my Kindle queue are two fashion memoirs: We Just Might Make It After All: My Best Friendship with Kate Spade by Elyce Arons, and Graydon Carter’s memoir, When the Going Was Good.

Playlists:
Zippy, happy, classic tunes that make me feel like I’m in a Nancy Meyers film. Conveniently, there are plenty of Nancy Meyers playlists to cheat your way into this sensation (here and here). Also, my other hero Ina Garten—her memoir is a must!—shared this fun playlist that she and her besties listen to in her Mini Cooper convertible while driving around the Hamptons.

Outfit inspiration:
I have a bad habit of wanting to frantically shop before a trip. It’s like, the moment I download my boarding pass, I suddenly detest my entire wardrobe and feel like I have nothing to wear. Which of course is ridiculous. For this trip, I want to keep it simple—this isn’t a true vacation. Each day, I’m going straight from work mode to mom mode, with (hopefully) some beer and a lobster roll thrown in there somewhere.

I’m packing great neutral backdrops for lots of jewelry — white, stripes, navy, tailoring, a grey sweatshirt, denim. Hardly groundbreaking... The basics, given a fresh twist with a little styling (scarves, bandanas, belts and stacks of jewelry, of course). Tip: to help organize packing and effortlessly get dressed each morning, I create a Pinterest board with outfit inspiration. Highly recommend!

Can’t forget to pack:
I am utterly devoted to my Melissa Wood Health workouts. They just work—keep it tight, keep it right. I’m devoting two pounds of precious cargo allotment to my Bala bands so I can squeeze in some short workouts on the hydrangea-bordered deck of our rental house before I have to jet off to work. My favorites are the Standing Series.

For the girls:
These tutu swimsuits by Hunza G are so stinking cute. They bring me (and my girls) a lot of joy. My littlest keeps getting a wedgie.
