1Hijo mío, presta atención a mi sabiduría,

Inclina tu oído a mi prudencia,

2Para que guardes la discreción

Y tus labios conserven el conocimiento.

3Porque los labios de la extraña destilan miel,

Y su lengua es más suave que el aceite;

4Pero al final es amarga como el ajenjo,

Aguda como espada de dos filos.

5Sus pies descienden a la muerte,

Sus pasos solo logran el Seol.

6No considera la senda de la vida;

Sus senderos son inestables, y no lo sabe.

7¶Ahora pues, hijos míos, escúchenme,

Advertencias al fiador y al perezoso

15Por tanto, su desgracia vendrá de repente;

Al instante será quebrantado, y no habrá remedio.

Las siete abominaciones

16¶Seis cosas hay que el Señor odia,

Y siete son abominación para Él:

17Ojos soberbios, lengua mentirosa,

Manos que derraman sangre inocente,

18Un corazón que trama planes perversos,

Pies que corren rápidamente hacia el mal,

19Un testigo falso que dice mentiras,

Y el que siembra discordia entre hermanos.

Advertencia contra el adulterio

20¶Hijo mío, guarda el mandamiento de tu padre

Y no abandones la enseñanza de tu madre;

21Átalos de continuo en tu corazón,

Enlázalos a tu cuello.

22Cuando andes, te guiarán;

Cuando duermas, velarán por ti;

Al despertarte, hablarán contigo.

Superioridad del don de profecía

1Procuren alcanzar el amor; pero también deseen ardientemente los dones espirituales, sobre todo que profeticen. 2Porque el que habla en lenguas no habla a los hombres, sino a Dios, pues nadie lo entiende, sino que en su espíritu habla misterios. 3Pero el que profetiza habla a los hombres para edificación, exhortación y consolación.

4El que habla en lenguas, a sí mismo se edifica, pero el que profetiza edifica a la iglesia. 5Yo quisiera que todos hablaran en lenguas, pero aún más, que profetizaran. Porque el que profetiza es superior al que habla en lenguas, a menos de que las interprete para que la iglesia reciba edificación.

6Ahora bien, hermanos, si yo voy a ustedes hablando en lenguas, ¿de qué provecho les seré a menos de que les hable por medio de revelación, o de conocimiento, o de profecía, o de enseñanza? 7Aun las cosas inanimadas, como la flauta o el arpa, al producir un sonido, si no dan con distinción los sonidos, ¿cómo se sabrá lo que se toca en la flauta o en el arpa? 8Porque si la trompeta da un sonido incierto, ¿quién se preparará para la batalla?

9Así también ustedes, a menos de que con la boca pronuncien palabras inteligibles, ¿cómo se sabrá lo que dicen? Pues hablarán al aire. 10Hay, quizás, muchas variedades de idiomas en el mundo, y ninguno carece de significado. 11Pues si yo no sé el significado de las palabras, seré para el que habla un extranjero, y el que habla será un extranjero para mí.

Today the Proverbs address the perennial temptations that confront every generation. May this reading be helpful in safeguarding our minds and marriages as we seek to live by God’s holy commandments in a world that forcefully rebels against them. In the New Testament we read of Paul’s corrective regarding the degeneration of the worship services in Corinth. The abuse of the gift of “languages” (i.e., tongues) in the Corinthian setting should be obvious as we compare it to what we saw in the three occurrences in the book of Acts. Warning Against Adultery

1 My son, be attentive to my wisdom;
incline your ear to my understanding,
2 that you may keep discretion,
and your lips may guard knowledge.
3 For the lips of a forbidden [1] woman drip honey,
and her speech [2] is smoother than oil,
4 but in the end she is bitter as wormwood,
sharp as a two-edged sword.
5 Her feet go down to death;
her steps follow the path to [3] Sheol;
6 she does not ponder the path of life;
her ways wander, and she does not know it.

7 And now, O sons, listen to me,
and do not depart from the words of my mouth.
8 Keep your way far from her,
and do not go near the door of her house,
9 lest you give your honor to others
and your years to the merciless,
10 lest strangers take their fill of your strength,
and your labors go to the house of a foreigner,
11 and at the end of your life you groan,
when your flesh and body are consumed,
12 and you say, “How I hated discipline,
and my heart despised reproof!
13 I did not listen to the voice of my teachers
or incline my ear to my instructors.
14 I am at the brink of utter ruin
in the assembled congregation.”

15 Drink water from your own cistern,
flowing water from your own well.
16 Should your springs be scattered abroad,
streams of water in the streets?
17 Let them be for yourself alone,
and not for strangers with you.

and rejoice in the wife of your youth,
19 a lovely deer, a graceful doe.
Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight;
be intoxicated [4] always in her love.
20 Why should you be intoxicated, my son, with a forbidden woman

Practical Warnings

1 My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor,
have given your pledge for a stranger,
2 if you are snared in the words of your mouth,
caught in the words of your mouth,
3 then do this, my son, and save yourself,
for you have come into the hand of your neighbor:
go, hasten, [7] and plead urgently with your neighbor.
4 Give your eyes no sleep
and your eyelids no slumber;
5 save yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, [8]
like a bird from the hand of the fowler.

6 Go to the ant, O sluggard;
consider her ways, and be wise.
7 Without having any chief,
officer, or ruler,
8 she prepares her bread in summer
and gathers her food in harvest.
9 How long will you lie there, O sluggard?
When will you arise from your sleep?
10 A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to rest,
11 and poverty will come upon you like a robber,
and want like an armed man.

12 A worthless person, a wicked man,
goes about with crooked speech,
13 winks with his eyes, signals [9] with his feet,
points with his finger,
14 with perverted heart devises evil,
continually sowing discord;
15 therefore calamity will come upon him suddenly;
in a moment he will be broken beyond healing.

16 There are six things that the Lord hates,
seven that are an abomination to him:
17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue,
and hands that shed innocent blood,
18 a heart that devises wicked plans,
feet that make haste to run to evil,
19 a false witness who breathes out lies,
and one who sows discord among brothers.

Warnings Against Adultery

20 My son, keep your father’s commandment,
and forsake not your mother’s teaching.
21 Bind them on your heart always;
tie them around your neck.
22 When you walk, they [10] will lead you;
when you lie down, they will watch over you;
and when you awake, they will talk with you.
23 For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light,
and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life,
24 to preserve you from the evil woman, [11]
from the smooth tongue of the adulteress. [12]
25 Do not desire her beauty in your heart,
and do not let her capture you with her eyelashes;
26 for the price of a prostitute is only a loaf of bread, [13]
but a married woman [14] hunts down a precious life.
27 Can a man carry fire next to his chest
and his clothes not be burned?
28 Or can one walk on hot coals
and his feet not be scorched?
29 So is he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife;
none who touches her will go unpunished.
30 People do not despise a thief if he steals
to satisfy his appetite when he is hungry,
31 but if he is caught, he will pay sevenfold;
he will give all the goods of his house.
32 He who commits adultery lacks sense;
he who does it destroys himself.
33 He will get wounds and dishonor,
and his disgrace will not be wiped away.
34 For jealousy makes a man furious,
and he will not spare when he takes revenge.
35 He will accept no compensation;
he will refuse though you multiply gifts.

Prophecy and Tongues

14:1 Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. 2 For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. 3 On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation. 4 The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church. 5 Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up.

6 Now, brothers, [15] if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching? 7 If even lifeless instruments, such as the flute or the harp, do not give distinct notes, how will anyone know what is played? 8 And if the bugle gives an indistinct sound, who will get ready for battle? 9 So with yourselves, if with your tongue you utter speech that is not intelligible, how will anyone know what is said? For you will be speaking into the air. 10 There are doubtless many different languages in the world, and none is without meaning, 11 but if I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be a foreigner to the speaker and the speaker a foreigner to me. 12 So with yourselves, since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church.

13 Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful. 15 What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also; I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will sing with my mind also. 16 Otherwise, if you give thanks with your spirit, how can anyone in the position of an outsider [16] say “Amen” to your thanksgiving when he does not know what you are saying? 17 For you may be giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not being built up. 18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 19 Nevertheless, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue.

20 Brothers, do not be children in your thinking. Be infants in evil, but in your thinking be mature.

Excelencia del amor

1Si yo hablara lenguas humanas y angélicas, pero no tengo amor, he llegado a ser como metal que resuena o címbalo que retiñe. 2Y si tuviera el don de profecía, y entendiera todos los misterios y todo conocimiento, y si tuviera toda la fe como para trasladar montañas, pero no tengo amor, nada soy. 3Y si diera todos mis bienes para dar de comer a los pobres, y si entregara mi cuerpo para ser quemado, pero no tengo amor, de nada me aprovecha.

4El amor es paciente, es bondadoso. Pero si hay dones de profecía, se acabarán; si hay lenguas, cesarán; si hay conocimiento, se acabará. 9Porque en parte conocemos, y en parte profetizamos; 10pero cuando venga lo perfecto, lo incompleto se acabará. 11Cuando yo era niño, hablaba como niño, pensaba como niño, razonaba como niño; pero cuando llegué a ser hombre, dejé las cosas de niño.

12Porque ahora vemos por un espejo, veladamente, pero entonces veremos cara a cara. Ahora conozco en parte, pero entonces conoceré plenamente, como he sido conocido. 13Y ahora permanecen la fe, la esperanza, el amor: estos tres; pero el mayor de ellos es el amor.

It is important for parents to observe that much of the book of Proverbs is framed as the dispensing of wisdom to the next generation. May this motivate all of us to take an interest in educating and equipping the next generation in the principles and precepts of God’s truth. In 1 Corinthians 13 we read the heart of Paul’s corrective to the Corinthians, reminding them that the endowment of abilities to people in the church is not for self-promotion or self-advancement, but for the good of others. Trust in the Lord with All Your Heart

^yMy son, do not forget my teaching,

^zbut let your heart keep my commandments,

² for ^alength of days and years of life

and ^bpeace they will add to you.

³ Let not ^csteadfast love and ^dfaithfulness forsake you;

^ebind them around your neck;

^fwrite them on the tablet of your heart.

⁴ So you will ^gfind favor and ^hgood success¹

in the sight of God and man.

^{5 i}Trust in the LORD with all your heart,

and ^jdo not lean on your own understanding.

⁶ In all your ways ^kacknowledge him,

and he ^lwill make straight your paths.

^{7 m}Be not wise in your own eyes;

ⁿfear the LORD, and turn away from evil.

⁸ It will be ^ohealing to your flesh²

and ^prefreshment³ to your bones.

Blessed Is the One Who Finds Wisdom

^{14 v}for the gain from her is better than gain from silver

and her profit better than ^wgold.

¹⁵ She is more precious than ^xjewels,

and ^ynothing you desire can compare with her.

^{16 z}Long life is in her right hand;

in her left hand are ^ariches and honor.

and all her paths are peace.

and do not choose any of his ways,

^{33 a}The LORD’s curse is on the house of the wicked,

but he ^bblesses the dwelling of the righteous.

³⁴ Toward the ^cscorners he ^dis scornful,

^ebut to the humble he gives favor.⁶

³⁵ The wise will inherit honor,

but fools get⁷ disgrace.

A Father’s Wise Instruction

^fHear, O sons, a father’s instruction,

and be attentive, that you may ^ggain¹ insight,

² for I give you good ^hprecepts;

do not forsake my teaching.

³ When I was a son with my father,

ⁱtender, ^jthe only one in the sight of my mother,

⁴ he ^ktaught me and said to me,

^l“Let your heart hold fast my words;

^mkeep my commandments, and live.

^{5 n}Get wisdom; get ^ginsight;

do not forget, and do not turn away from the words of my mouth.

⁶ Do not forsake her, and she will keep you;

^olove her, and she will guard you.

^{7 p}The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom,

and whatever you get, get ^ginsight.

⁸ Prize her highly, and she will exalt you;

she will ^qhonor you ^rif you embrace her.

⁹ She will place on your head ^sa graceful garland;

The Way of Love

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. ² And if I have ^aprophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, ^bso as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. ^{3 c}If I give away all I have, and ^dif I deliver up my body to be burned,¹but have not love, I gain nothing.

^{4 e}Love is patient and ^fkind; love ^gdoes not envy or boast; it ^his not arrogant ⁵ or rude. It ⁱdoes not insist on its own way; it ^jis not irritable or resentful;^{2 6} it ^kdoes not rejoice at wrongdoing, but ^lrejoices with the truth. ^{7 m}Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, ^eendures all things.

⁸ Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. ⁹ For ⁿwe know in part and we prophesy in part, ¹⁰ but ^owhen the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. ¹¹ When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. ¹² For ^pnow we see in a mirror dimly, but ^qthen face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as ^rI have been fully known.

¹³ So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

La sabiduría protege del mal

The Beginning of Knowledge

^aThe proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel:

² To know wisdom and instruction,

to understand words of insight,

³ to receive instruction in wise dealing,

in ^brighteousness, justice, and equity;

⁴ to give prudence to ^cthe simple,

knowledge and ^ddiscretion to the youth—

⁵ Let the wise hear and ^eincrease in learning,

and the one who understands obtain guidance,

⁶ to understand a proverb and a saying,

^fthe words of the wise and their ^griddles.

^{7 h}The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge;

fools despise wisdom and instruction.

The Enticement of Sinners

^{8 i}Hear, my son, your father’s instruction,

and forsake not your mother’s teaching,

⁹ for they are ^ja graceful garland for your head

and ^kpendants for your neck.

¹⁰ My son, if sinners ^lentice you,

do not consent.

¹¹ If they say, “Come with us, ^mlet us lie in wait for blood;

ⁿlet us ambush the innocent without reason;

The Call of Wisdom

^{20 y}Wisdom cries aloud in the street,

in the markets she raises her voice;

²¹ at the head of the noisy streets she cries out;

at ^zthe entrance of the city gates she speaks:

²² “How long, O ^asimple ones, will you love being simple?

How long will ^bscoffers delight in their scoffing

and fools ^chate knowledge?

²³ If you turn at my reproof,¹

behold, I will ^dpour out my spirit to you;

I will make my words known to you.

^{24 e}Because I have called and ^fyou refused to listen,

have ^gstretched out my hand and no one has heeded,

²⁵ because you have ^hignored all my counsel

and ⁱwould have none of my reproof,

²⁶ I also ^jwill laugh at your calamity;

I will mock when ^kterror strikes you,

²⁷ when terror strikes you like ^la storm

and your calamity comes like a whirlwind,

when distress and anguish come upon you.

The Value of Wisdom

^uMy son, ^vif you receive my words

and treasure up my commandments with you,

² making your ear attentive to wisdom

and inclining your heart to understanding;

³ yes, if you call out for insight

and raise your voice ^wfor understanding,

⁴ if you seek it like ^xsilver

and search for it as for ^yhidden treasures,

⁵ then ^zyou will understand the fear of the LORD

and find the knowledge of God.

⁶ For ^athe LORD gives wisdom;

from his mouth come knowledge and understanding;

⁷ he stores up sound wisdom for the upright;

he is ^ba shield to those who ^cwalk in integrity,

⁸ guarding the paths of justice

and ^dwatching over the way of his ^esaints.

^{9 f}Then you will understand ^grighteousness and justice

and equity, every good path;

¹⁰ for wisdom will come into your heart,

and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul;

^{11 h}discretion will ⁱwatch over you,

understanding will guard you,

¹² delivering you from the way of evil,

from men of perverted speech,

¹³ who forsake the paths of uprightness

to ^jwalk in the ways of darkness,

¹⁴ who ^krejoice in doing evil

¹⁶ So ^pyou will be delivered from the forbidden¹ woman,

and forgets ^tthe covenant of her God;

and her paths to the departed;³

¹⁹ none who go to her come back,

nor do they regain the paths of life.

²⁰ So you will walk in the way of the good

and keep to the paths of the righteous.

²¹ For the upright ^vwill inhabit the land,

and those with integrity will remain in it,

²² but the wicked will be ^wcut off from the land,

and the treacherous will be ^xrooted out of it.

Spiritual Gifts

Now ^mconcerning¹ spiritual gifts,² brothers,³ I do not want you to be uninformed. ² You know that ⁿwhen you were pagans ^oyou were led astray to ^pmute idols, however you were led. ³ Therefore I want you to understand that ^qno one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is ^raccursed!” and ^sno one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.

⁴ Now ^tthere are varieties of gifts, but ^uthe same Spirit; ⁵ and ^vthere are varieties of service, but ^uthe same Lord; ⁶ and there are varieties of activities, but it is ^uthe same God who empowers them all in everyone. ^{7 w}To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. ⁸ For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of ^xwisdom, and to another the utterance of ^yknowledge according to the same Spirit, ⁹ to another ^zfaith by the same Spirit, to another ^agifts of healing by the one Spirit, ¹⁰ to another ^bthe working of miracles, to another ^cprophecy, to another ^dthe ability to distinguish between spirits, to another ^evarious kinds of tongues, to another ^fthe interpretation of tongues. ¹¹ All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, ^gwho apportions to each one individually ^has he wills.

One Body with Many Members

¹² For just as ⁱthe body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, ^jso it is with Christ. ¹³ For ^kin one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—^lJews or Greeks, slaves⁴ or free—and ^mall were made to drink of one Spirit.

¹⁴ For the body does not consist of one member but of many. ¹⁵ If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. ¹⁶ And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. ¹⁷ If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? ¹⁸ But as it is, ⁿGod arranged the members in the body, each one of them, ^oas he chose. ¹⁹ If all were a single member, where would the body be? ²⁰ As it is, there are many parts,⁵ yet one body.

²¹ The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” ²² On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, ²³ and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty, ²⁴ which our more presentable parts do not require. But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, ²⁵ that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. ²⁶ If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, ^pall rejoice together.

I trust that as I prayed at the outset of this year’s reading through the Psalms, that your prayerful reading has enriched your spirit and enhanced your worship of our great God. In our New Testament reading we revisit important instructions on our participation in the Lord’s Supper. The Corinthian Christians had made a festive potluck out of this solemn memorial meal. While that may not be our problem, there is still much to learn from this passage about the proper mindset in participating in this important remembrance of the Lord’s death.

The Lord’s Supper

¹⁷ But in the following instructions I do not commend you, because when you come together it is not for the better but for the worse. ¹⁸ For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, ^rI hear that there are divisions among you. And I believe it in part,^{5 19} for ^sthere must be factions among you in order ^tthat those who are genuine among you may be recognized. ²⁰ When you come together, it is not the Lord’s supper that you eat. ²¹ For in eating, each one goes ahead with his own meal. One goes hungry, ^uanother gets drunk. ²² What! Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise ^vthe church of God and ^whumiliate those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I commend you in this? No, I will not.

²³ For ^xI received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that ^ythe Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, ²⁴ and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for⁶ you. Do this in remembrance of me.”^{7 25} In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. 1 I will extol you, my God and King,
and bless your name forever and ever.

and praise your name forever and ever.
3 Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised,
and his greatness is unsearchable.

4 One generation shall commend your works to another,

5 On the glorious splendor of your majesty,

Head Coverings

2 Now I commend you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions even as I delivered them to you. 3 But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife [8] is her husband, and the head of Christ is God. 4 Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head, 5 but every wife [9] who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, since it is the same as if her head were shaven. 6 For if a wife will not cover her head, then she should cut her hair short. But since it is disgraceful for a wife to cut off her hair or shave her head, let her cover her head. 7 For a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God, but woman is the glory of man. 8 For man was not made from woman, but woman from man. 9 Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. 10 That is why a wife ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. Pastor’s Note:

David spent a lot of time running for his life, hiding in caves, and trusting in God for his safety. We often picture David as a great king of Israel ensconced in his palace in Jerusalem, but much of his life was lived in the deserts, on the run as a hunted man. Psalm 142 is a good reminder that godly people in the middle of God’s will are not always living comfortable lives of prosperity and surplus – not even the godly kings who were said to be men “after God’s own heart.” I pray your reading of 1 Corinthians 10:14-33 is energizing.

Today we read what may have been sung as an antiphonal song, with one group of singers answering the other. Imagine the power of this kind of refrain sounding out from God’s people—“for his steadfast love endures forever.” After yesterday’s call in 1 Corinthians 8 to lay down our rights, Paul testifies to the way he modeled this kind of sacrifice in his missionary work among the Corinthians. We should remember how important a good role model is, not only to look to them, but also to be one in our everyday lives.

³ This is my defense to those who would examine me. ^{4 o}Do we not have the right to eat and drink? ^{5 p}Do we not have the right to take along a believing wife,¹ as do the other apostles and ^qthe brothers of the Lord and ^rCephas? ⁶ Or is it only Barnabas and I who have no right to refrain from working for a living? ^{7 s}Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? ^tWho plants a vineyard without eating any of its fruit? Cuidado con la libertad

Today we read a great set of psalms that I trust will challenge and edify each of us. May God’s living and active word get down to the place of our thoughts and convictions. Much like Romans 14, today’s reading of 1 Corinthians 8 should be taken from the historic and specific concerns of first century Asia Minor and be applied to the many “disputed issues” we are forced to grapple with in the twenty-first century. Our Christian testimony and our love for our brothers and sisters in Christ should govern our “freedoms” and drive us to lay down our “rights” because we have learned to sacrificially love others.

Remember, O LORD, in David’s favor,

all the hardships he endured,

how he swore to the LORD

and vowed to the Mighty One of Jacob,

“I will not enter my house

I will not give sleep to my eyes

or slumber to my eyelids,

until I find a place for the LORD,

a dwelling place for the Mighty One of Jacob.”

Behold, we heard of it in Ephrathah;

we found it in the fields of Jaar.

“Let us go to his dwelling place;

let us worship at his footstool!”

Arise, O LORD, and go to your resting place,

Food Offered to Idols

Now concerning^{1 m}food offered to idols: we know that ⁿ“all of us possess knowledge.” This “knowledge” ^opuffs up, ^pbut love builds up. ^{2 q}If anyone imagines that he knows something, ^rhe does not yet know as he ought to know. ³ But if anyone loves God, ^she is known by God.²

⁴ Therefore, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that ^t“an idol has no real existence,” and that ^u“there is no God but one.” ⁵ For although there may be ^vso-called gods in heaven or on earth—as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”— ⁶ yet ^wfor us there is one God, the Father, ^xfrom whom are all things and for whom we exist, and ^yone Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and ^zthrough whom we exist.

⁷ However, not all possess this knowledge. But some, ^athrough former association with idols, eat food as really offered to an idol, and ^btheir conscience, being weak, is defiled. ^{8 c}Food will not commend us to God. We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do. ⁹ But take care ^dthat this right of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block ^eto the weak. ¹⁰ For if anyone sees you who have knowledge eating³ in an idol’s temple, will he not be encouraged,⁴ if his conscience is weak, to eat food offered to idols? ¹¹ And so by your knowledge this weak person is ^fdestroyed, the brother for whom Christ died. ¹² Thus, sinning against your brothers⁵and ^gwounding their conscience when it is weak, ^hyou sin against Christ. ¹³ Therefore, ⁱif food makes my brother stumble, I will never eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble.

Sobre casarse o no casarse

25En cuanto a las vírgenes no tengo mandamiento del Señor, pero doy mi opinión como el que habiendo recibido la misericordia del Señor es digno de confianza. 26Creo, pues, que esto es bueno en vista de la presente aflicción; es decir, que es bueno que el hombre se quede como está. 27¿Estás unido a mujer? No procures separarte. ¿Estás libre de mujer? No busques mujer. 28Y si te casas, no has pecado; y si una virgen se casa, no ha pecado. Sin embargo, ellos tendrán problemas en esta vida, y yo quiero evitárselos.

³⁶ If anyone thinks that he is not behaving properly toward his betrothed,¹⁰ if his¹¹ passions are strong, and it has to be, let him do as he wishes: let them marry—it is no sin. ³⁷ But whoever is firmly established in his heart, being under no necessity but having his desire under control, and has determined this in his heart, to keep her as his betrothed, he will do well. ³⁸ So then he who marries his betrothed ^hdoes well, and he who refrains from marriage will do even better.

^{39 i}A wife is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to be married to whom she wishes, only ^jin the Lord. ⁴⁰ Yet ^kin my judgment she is happier if she remains as she is. And I think ^lthat I too have the Spirit of God.

1En cuanto a las cosas de que me escribieron, bueno es para el hombre no tocar mujer. 2No obstante, por razón de las inmoralidades, que cada uno tenga su propia mujer, y cada una tenga su propio marido. 3Que el marido cumpla su deber para con su mujer, e igualmente la mujer lo cumpla con el marido. 4La mujer no tiene autoridad sobre su propio cuerpo, sino el marido. Y asimismo el marido no tiene autoridad sobre su propio cuerpo, sino la mujer.

5No se priven el uno del otro, excepto de común acuerdo y por cierto tiempo, para dedicarse a la oración. Principles for Marriage

7:1 Now concerning the matters about which you wrote: “It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.” 2 But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. 3 The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. 4 For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. 5 Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.

Live as You Are Called

Today we begin reading the “psalms of ascents,” which were likely the songs sung by Israel during their annual pilgrimages to Jerusalem. These obedient worshippers sacrificed a lot of time, money, and effort to do what God asked them to do each year. May these songs remind us to sing, worship, and honestly pour out our hearts to God as we engage in the spiritual disciplines required of us in the church age. In 1 Corinthians 6 we are called to a kind of maturity in practice and doctrine that is so often lacking in Christians today.

Lawsuits Against Believers

And if the world is to be judged by you, are you incompetent to try trivial cases? ³ Do you not know that we are to judge angels? How much more, then, matters pertaining to this life! ⁴ So if you have such cases, ^twhy do you lay them before those who have no standing in the church? ^{5 u}I say this to your shame. Flee Sexual Immorality

^{12 c}“All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything. ^{13 d}“Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food”—and God will destroy both one ^eand the other. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but ^ffor the Lord, and ^gthe Lord for the body. ¹⁴ And ^hGod raised the Lord and ⁱwill also raise us up ^jby his power. ¹⁵ Do you not know that ^kyour bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! ¹⁶ Or do you not know that he who is joined⁴ to a prostitute becomes one body with her? Y de Tus juicios tengo miedo.

121¶He practicado el juicio y la justicia;

No me abandones a mis opresores.

122Sé fiador de Tu siervo para bien;

Que no me opriman los soberbios.

123Desfallecen mis ojos por Tu salvación

Y por la promesa de Tu justicia.

124Haz con Tu siervo según Tu misericordia

Y enséñame Tus estatutos.

125Yo soy Tu siervo, dame entendimiento

Para que conozca Tus testimonios.

126Es tiempo de que actúe el Señor,

Porque han quebrantado Tu ley.

127Por tanto, amo Tus mandamientos

Más que el oro, sí, más que el oro fino.

128Por tanto, estimo rectos todos Tus preceptos acerca de todas las cosas,

Y aborrezco todo camino de mentira.

Vivifícame, Señor, conforme a Tu misericordia.

160La suma de Tu palabra es verdad,

Y eterna cada una de Tus justas ordenanzas.

Inmoralidad en la iglesia de Corinto

1En efecto, se oye que entre ustedes hay inmoralidad, y una inmoralidad tal como no existe ni siquiera entre los gentiles, al extremo de que alguien tiene la mujer de su padre. 2¡Y ustedes se han vuelto arrogantes en lugar de haberse entristecido, para que el que de entre ustedes ha cometido esta acción fuera expulsado de en medio de ustedes!

3Pues yo, por mi parte, aunque ausente en cuerpo pero presente en espíritu, como si estuviera presente, ya he juzgado al que cometió tal acción. 4En el nombre de nuestro Señor Jesús, cuando estén reunidos, y yo con ustedes en espíritu, con el poder de nuestro Señor Jesús, 5entreguen a ese tal a Satanás para la destrucción de su carne, a fin de que su espíritu sea salvo en el día del Señor Jesús.

6La jactancia de ustedes no es buena. ¿No saben que un poco de levadura fermenta toda la masa? 7Limpien la levadura vieja para que sean masa nueva, así como lo son en realidad sin levadura. Porque aun Cristo, nuestra Pascua, ha sido sacrificado. 8Por tanto, celebremos la fiesta no con la levadura vieja, ni con la levadura de malicia y maldad, sino con panes sin levadura de sinceridad y de verdad.

9En mi carta les escribí que no anduvieran en compañía de personas inmorales. 10No me refería a la gente inmoral de este mundo, o a los codiciosos y estafadores, o a los idólatras, porque entonces tendrían ustedes que salirse del mundo. 11Sino que en efecto les escribí que no anduvieran en compañía de ninguno que, llamándose hermano, es una persona inmoral, o avaro, o idólatra, o difamador, o borracho, o estafador. Con esa persona, ni siquiera coman.

12Pues ¿por qué he de juzgar yo a los de afuera? ¿No juzgan ustedes a los que están dentro de la iglesia? 13Pero Dios juzga a los que están fuera. Expulsen al malvado de entre ustedes.

As we finish reading Psalm 119 today, we begin with the classic verse that God’s word is to be “a lamp to our feet and a light to our path.” May it be so today as we take what we read and ask that God would help us to make the proper applications of it throughout the day. In 1 Corinthians 5 we see problems in Corinth that are as relevant as today’s Christian bloggers. Let us never follow this erroneous pattern of letting our doctrine of grace become something that lures us to revel in our sins or in the magnanimity of our acceptance of the sins of others.
