I’ve realised that when I really need to work, I rarely reach for “focus music.”

No ambient soundscapes. No lo-fi beats. No coffee-shop playlists designed to make you answer emails.

I need drums.

UK Garage, 2-step, drum & bass, bassline — music with enough going on that somehow everything else goes quiet.

It’s also a side of my taste I don’t share very often. I’ve loved this world of music for years, from Wookie and Todd Terry to Goldie, Katy B, Chase & Status and the newer energy around people like Sammy Virji. Different eras, different tempos, same propulsion.

There’s something about the shuffle of UKG and the momentum of D&B that puts my brain into a very specific gear. Once the rhythm locks in, I stop checking my phone. I stop bouncing between tabs. Ideas start connecting. Two hours can disappear.

Maybe that’s my version of white noise.

So Vol.15 isn’t really built around a Sunday mood or a particular memory. It’s functional.

Twenty records for getting something done.

Headphones on. Phone down. Lock in.

Growing up, nobody I knew had a creative director.

At least not officially.

There were no decks. No moodboards. Nobody spoke about cultural relevance, community building or seeding strategies. Nobody was tracking engagement or identifying key opinion leaders.

But somebody always knew what was next.

It might have been the taxi driver with the cleanest Quantum and the newest pair of Nikes. The footballer who had access to things you hadn’t seen in the shops yet. The DJ who somehow had the record before everybody else. The dealer whose clothes told you he’d entered an economic universe most people around him couldn’t access.

Or sometimes it was just that one older guy.

Every neighbourhood had one.

He wasn’t famous. He didn’t necessarily have the most money. But if he wore something, you noticed. If he started wearing his jeans differently, three months later everybody was doing it. If he said a shoe was finished, somehow it was finished.

Nobody appointed these people.

They earned the position.

Looking back now, after spending years working in cultural marketing, I realise something:

The hood has always had creative directors.

We just didn’t call them that.

Taste before job titles

We tend to think of creative direction as something belonging to fashion houses, advertising agencies and magazines.

And obviously, there is a professional discipline to it.

A creative director builds worlds. They make decisions about casting, photography, typography, styling, music, environments and storytelling. They take a collection or product and create the context through which we’re supposed to understand it.

But strip away the production budgets and terminology and something more fundamental remains.

Creative direction is partly the ability to make people see something differently.

And people in the streets have been doing that forever.

They don’t necessarily create the object.

They create the context.

The Nike basketball shoe wasn’t designed for a kid on the Cape Flats to wear with jeans.

Someone had to make that translation.

Someone looked at a shoe designed for an American basketball court and effectively said:

Nah.

This is what we’re doing with it.

Then somebody else copied him.

Then somebody else.

Eventually the original meaning of the object became almost irrelevant.

Around us, it meant something else now.

That’s creative direction.

The taxi driver

The taxi driver deserves his own essay, and he’ll get one.

But for now, think about what the taxi represented.

It wasn’t simply transportation.

The taxi was a moving cultural object.

The driver selected the music. He customised the vehicle. He decided how it sat. He chose the wheels. The stickers. The sound system. The clothes he wore while driving it.

Everything communicated something.

And unlike celebrities on television, he was right there.

You could see him every day.

That proximity mattered.

You didn’t need to imagine what success looked like in New York or London. There was a version of it parked at the rank.

The taxi driver wasn’t thinking about brand positioning.

But he understood presentation.

The dealer

This is the uncomfortable one.

But if we’re going to talk seriously about how taste develops in working-class communities, we can’t edit the story until it becomes respectable.

Drug dealers influenced fashion.

That’s not an endorsement of what they did. It’s an acknowledgement of what visible wealth does in communities where access to legitimate wealth has historically been restricted.

The dealer often had something other people didn’t:

Access.

Access to expensive clothes. Cars. Jewellery. Imported sneakers. Nightclubs. Spaces.

And access is one of the most powerful ingredients in aspiration.

The clothes weren’t interesting simply because they were expensive.

They represented entry into another world.

A particular jacket wasn’t just a jacket anymore. It became evidence that there were rooms you could enter, things you could afford and experiences available beyond the immediate boundaries of your neighbourhood.

Long before we spoke about “aspirational marketing”, people understood aspiration perfectly well.

They could see it walking down the road.

The footballer

The footballer represented another kind of possibility.

Talent could move you.

And movement created access.

The local footballer travelled. Met people. Entered different spaces. Sometimes earned money young. Sometimes received product. Sometimes simply saw things before everyone else did.

That information came back home with him.

And again, proximity mattered.

The global superstar existed on television.

The local footballer might be standing next to you at the shop.

That makes aspiration feel different.

You could study the way he wore his tracksuit. What boots he preferred. What sneakers appeared when he wasn’t playing.

He wasn’t just consuming culture.

He was bringing information back into the neighbourhood.

The DJ

The DJ might be the easiest one to understand because the entire profession is built around selection.

The DJ doesn’t need to make the music.

Their value comes from knowing what to play.

More importantly, knowing when to play it.

Selection.

Sequence.

Timing.

Context.

Rejection.

Knowing what doesn’t belong is as important as knowing what does.

That’s taste.

And when enough people trust your taste, your selection starts changing theirs.

A DJ playing a record repeatedly could turn an obscure song into our song.

The music existed already.

The DJ changed its meaning by placing it in the right room, at the right time, in front of the right people.

Again:

Creative direction.

Then there was that one guy

This person interests me most.

Because he complicates the idea that influence requires fame, money or institutional power.

Every neighbourhood had someone who just knew.

The older cousin.

The guy from two roads over.

Your friend’s brother.

He had magazines you’d never seen. Music you’d never heard. Shoes you didn’t know existed.

Sometimes you couldn’t even explain where his information came from.

He simply seemed closer to culture than everybody else.

And if he wore something, it carried weight.

Years later I would learn that sociologists had language for some of this.

Pierre Bourdieu wrote about cultural capital: the knowledge, tastes, behaviours and cultural competencies that can produce social advantage.

What fascinated me when I encountered the idea wasn’t the terminology.

It was how familiar the mechanism felt.

Because money alone never explained who was cool.

We all knew people with money who couldn’t dress.

And we knew people without much money who could make almost anything look right.

The difference was taste.

More specifically, it was taste that other people trusted.

That trust is a form of power.

We eventually professionalised all of it

Years later, the marketing industry would build an entire vocabulary around behaviours I’d already seen growing up.

Seeding.

Influencer marketing.

Community building.

Trend forecasting.

Curation.

Cultural strategy.

Ambassadorship.

Creative direction.

Put the right product on the right person and maybe everybody else will want it.

I know this because it’s part of what I do now.

And when you strip away the dashboards, reach numbers, contracts and campaign reports, there’s a remarkably old question sitting underneath the entire machinery:

Who has enough cultural capital that putting our product on them changes what the product means?

That’s the question.

Not:

Who has the most followers?

Not:

Who gets the most likes?

Not even:

Who can create the best content?

Who can change the meaning of the thing?

Because those are very different forms of influence.

Influence isn’t distribution

One of the mistakes modern marketing makes is treating influence as a media channel.

We look at a person and calculate reach.

500,000 followers.

1.2 million views.

8% engagement.

Useful numbers.

But they tell you how far something might travel.

They don’t necessarily tell you what happens to the object when that person touches it.

Some people distribute culture.

Other people alter it.

The second group has always interested me more.

The guy in the neighbourhood didn’t need 500,000 people watching him.

Sometimes 30 people were enough.

Because they were the right 30 people.

And those 30 told another 30.

Culture moved differently.

Slower perhaps.

But with more friction.

You had to encounter someone. Go somewhere. Know somebody. Hear something. Notice something.

Information travelled through people.

Maybe they weren’t creators

Looking back, I’m not even sure “creator” is the right word for many of these people.

They were translators.

They took things created somewhere else and gave them local meaning.

Basketball shoe became street shoe.

Workwear became fashion.

Luxury became neighbourhood status.

American rap became Cape Town identity.

Football shirts became everyday uniforms.

Objects crossed borders, classes and contexts, and somebody had to show the rest of us what they could mean here.

That’s cultural translation.

And perhaps that’s why so much corporate cultural marketing feels slightly wrong.

Brands are constantly looking for people who can create culture for them.

Culture doesn’t really work like that.

You can’t brief somebody on Tuesday to manufacture cultural significance by Friday.

What you can do is recognise the people who are already translating the world around them.

They’ve always existed.

The platforms change.

The terminology changes.

The clothes change.

The neighbourhood changes.

But somebody is always standing slightly ahead of everyone else, looking at something we’ve all seen and somehow seeing something different.

Then the rest of us catch up.

The street was the classroom

There’s something strange about eventually finding yourself working inside the machinery that puts professional language around all of this.

Today I can sit in a meeting and talk about cultural credibility, seeding strategy, consumer behaviour and influence.

There are frameworks for it.

Budgets.

Reports.

Presentations.

But I didn’t first learn about influence from marketing.

I learned it by watching people.

Watching which guy everybody copied.

Which car made people turn their heads.

Which DJ everybody trusted.

Which footballer brought something new home.

Which pair of sneakers suddenly appeared everywhere.

Which person could wear something completely wrong and somehow make it right.

Years later, I discovered there were theories for some of it.

Eventually, I discovered there were jobs for it too.

But the education came first.

We just didn’t know we were studying.

The street was the classroom.

And the hood had creative directors long before anybody thought to put it on a business card.

Soul, jazz and rap for staying inside, getting the house in order and letting winter move at its own pace.

Basically, music that feels like sunlight coming through the window when it’s cold outside.

The first gold teeth I ever saw weren’t in a rap video.

They were in Athlone.

Every family had someone with them.

An uncle.

A neighbour.

The mechanic who worked on your mother’s Corolla.

The guy serving Gatsbys behind the counter.

Men in their Sunday suits.

Flower sellers in Adderly Street.

Nobody ever explained them.

They simply belonged.

Like koesisters on a Sunday morning.

Plastic covers on the lounge furniture.

Or AF 1s, Suedes and Superstars that somehow outlived every trend.

Some things don’t arrive through marketing.

They arrive through inheritance.

Years later, I found myself looking at photographs of elderly women in Uzbekistan.

Gold teeth.

Not grills.

Not diamonds.

Just gold.

The resemblance was unsettling.

Different continents.

Different religions.

Different histories.

Yet somehow we had arrived at almost exactly the same cultural symbol.

It made me question something I’d spent most of my career believing.

Maybe culture doesn’t spread because one place copies another.

Maybe humans simply keep solving the same emotional problems in similar ways.

The fashion industry loves origin stories.

Every season brings another rediscovery.

Utility jackets.

Workwear.

Western.

Quiet luxury.

Someone always gets credited with inventing something.

Reality is much less glamorous.

Fashion rarely invents.

It edits.

Gold teeth prove it.

Long before hip-hop, Etruscan women wore gold dental work as a symbol of beauty and status.

The Maya embedded jade into their teeth as an act of spirituality and identity.

Across Central Asia, gold smiles became symbols of prosperity and permanence.

On the Cape Flats, they became working-class aspiration and pride.

Houston transformed them into one of hip-hop’s defining symbols.

The object barely changed.

The meaning kept evolving.

That’s the part I can’t stop thinking about.

Not the gold.

The translation.

Hip-hop didn’t invent grills.

It translated an ancient language into a modern dialect.

Suddenly I started seeing this everywhere.

Denim.

Sneakers.

Tracksuits.

Football shirts.

None of them became meaningful because fashion declared them important.

Fashion noticed they were already important.

Which makes me wonder if the industry has misunderstood its own role.

We talk endlessly about trend forecasting.

About being first.

About discovering what’s next.

But what if the most valuable cultural work isn’t prediction?

What if it’s recognition?

Recognizing symbols that have been quietly accumulating meaning for decades before a luxury house decides they’re worthy of a runway.

I’ve spent fifteen years sitting between brands and culture.

One thing I’ve learned is that brands are obsessed with aesthetics because aesthetics are easy to copy.

Meaning isn’t.

Anybody can reproduce the look of gold teeth.

Very few understand what they’re signaling.

Status.

Protection.

Prosperity.

Rebellion.

Belonging.

The symbolism changes depending on where you stand.

The instinct never does.

That’s the difference between cultural marketing and aesthetic marketing.

One asks:

What are people wearing?

The other asks:

Why have humans kept returning to this symbol for thousands of years?

Those are completely different questions.

Only one leads somewhere interesting.

Maybe that’s why so many brands struggle with culture.

They’re searching for originality in places where originality has never existed.

Culture isn’t a catalogue of new ideas.

It’s an archive of old ones.

The best creative directors know this instinctively.

So do the best musicians.

The best designers.

The best filmmakers.

None of them create in a vacuum.

They translate.

I think that’s the real job.

Not to invent culture.

To recognise it before everyone else realises what they’re looking at.

That requires something algorithms can’t measure.

Taste.

Curiosity.

Context.

Humility.

You have to become a student before you become a storyteller.

The future of cultural marketing won’t belong to the brands with the biggest budgets.

It won’t even belong to the brands with the best creative.

It will belong to the brands that stop asking:

What’s next?

And start asking:

What has always been here?

Because somewhere in Uzbekistan, an elderly woman smiles with gold teeth.

Somewhere in Houston, a rapper flashes a grill.

Different stories.

One human instinct.

Maybe that’s what fashion really is.

Not the invention of new symbols.

The translation of old ones.

For me, it’s 3AM in Cape Town between 2003 and 2010.

I was somewhere between 17 and 24 years old, figuring out adulthood one bad decision at a time. Cheap vodka. Cheap brandy. House parties that somehow turned into clubs. Clubs that somehow turned into after parties. An empty wallet on Sunday morning and absolutely no regrets by Tuesday.

This playlist isn’t what was playing inside the club. It’s what played on the drive home.

Tamia. Teedra Moses. Janet Jackson. Pharrell. Jay-Z. Raphael Saadiq. Brandy. Mariah Carey. Lauryn Hill. Songs that somehow sounded better when you were exhausted, slightly drunk and replaying the night’s events in your head.

Who kissed who. Who got rejected. Who danced with who. The friend who disappeared for two hours. The random conversations that felt profound because it was 3AM and everyone was suddenly a philosopher.

Growing up in Cape Town during that period, nightlife was a rite of passage. You met people you’d never otherwise meet. You discovered music before streaming platforms told you what to like. Someone’s older cousin had the good MP3s. Somebody’s car had the best sound system. Somebody always had a burned CD with songs you immediately needed.

Places like Galaxy became part of our cultural education. Not because of what happened inside, but because of the memories we carried home afterwards.

Listening back to these records now, I’ve realised they all have one thing in common. They’re warm. Reflective. The kind of songs that create space for you to quietly process the night before the sun comes up.

3AM in Cape Town is an ode to those drives home. To being young enough to think the night would never end and old enough to know that some of the best parts of growing up happen somewhere between the party and your front door.

I’ve always been fascinated by sampling in hip-hop. The idea that a producer can hear something in a record that everybody else missed and completely transform it into something new. Some of my favourite music exists because someone spent hours digging through dusty crates and asked, “What if?”

This playlist is a small celebration of that.

You’ll find original records sitting alongside the hip-hop songs they inspired. Bobby Caldwell next to Common. Soul records that became Slum Village classics. Japanese city pop rubbing shoulders with Larry June, Mac Miller and Lupe Fiasco.

It’s less of a playlist and more of a conversation between records from different decades, genres and corners of the world.

The rest of the playlist is simply music that feels right for the occasion. Light, warm and unhurried. The musical equivalent of ordering a matcha latte on a Sunday morning and taking absolutely nowhere to be seriously.

I often say that hip-hop taught me about fashion, art and culture long before I knew I was learning anything at all. Sampling might be one of the genre’s greatest gifts. It encourages curiosity. It teaches you that everything comes from somewhere and that good taste is often just knowing where to look.

The assumption is usually that it began with sneakers. Or graffiti. Or hip-hop. Or maybe Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet, the film that completely rearranged the way I looked at clothing, colour and art direction as a kid.

The truth is, it started much earlier than that.

I just didn’t know it.

Growing up on the Cape Flats, fashion wasn’t something we spoke about. We weren’t discussing runway collections over dinner or debating the merits of Japanese pattern cutting. We weren’t collecting magazines from Paris or Milan. Fashion, at least as I understood it then, belonged somewhere else. It belonged to glossy pages and distant cities.

What we did have, though, was people who made clothes.

My grandmother worked at House of Monatic, one of South Africa’s most respected tailoring manufacturers. Long before I understood what Yves Saint Laurent represented, she was part of the workforce producing garments to the exacting standards of one of the world’s great luxury houses.

That fact only landed on me years later.

Not because she ever made a fuss about it.

She didn’t.

To her, it was work.

But with the benefit of hindsight, I realise that what she and thousands of others were doing in Cape Town during the 1980s and 1990s was extraordinary.

For decades, Cape Town quietly became one of Africa’s great garment manufacturing cities. Factories stretched across Salt River, Woodstock, Maitland, Athlone and Epping, employing thousands of machinists, cutters, pressers, pattern makers and tailors whose names would never appear on a label.

They made suits.

Shirts.

Luxury garments.

Clothing destined for department stores and fashion houses across Europe.

Most people buying those garments had no idea they were made at the southern tip of Africa.

Today, we celebrate designers. We celebrate creative directors. We celebrate campaigns and runway shows. But fashion has always depended on another kind of artistry: the invisible precision of the people behind the seams.

Cape Town was full of them.

Entire families worked in clothing factories. Skills were passed from one generation to the next almost like heirlooms. Someone would begin sewing cuffs before learning collars. Another would spend decades perfecting a single construction technique until it became second nature.

Craft wasn’t a trend.

It was a livelihood.

Looking back, I think that’s why I’ve always been drawn to clothing that feels considered. I’ve never been interested in logos for the sake of logos. I’m fascinated by construction. By proportion. By fabric. By the almost invisible decisions that separate something well made from something merely expensive.

Maybe that appreciation wasn’t learned through fashion media at all.

Maybe it was inherited.

When I fell in love with graffiti as a teenager, I thought I was discovering creativity for the first time. Graffiti taught me about composition, typography, colour and identity. Sneakers followed naturally. Then came Japanese design, Belgian fashion, archival garments and the broader world of art and culture.

For years, I treated those moments as separate chapters.

Now I realise they were all connected.

The foundation had already been laid decades earlier by a woman who came home from work without ever imagining that her grandson would one day spend his career talking about culture, style and fashion.

There’s something poetic about that.

Because my entry into fashion wasn’t through a flagship store or a runway invitation.

It was through labour.

Through someone whose hands helped construct garments that carried another person’s name.

As globalisation accelerated through the late 1990s and early 2000s, much of Cape Town’s garment industry disappeared. Production moved offshore. Factories closed. Thousands of highly skilled workers lost not just jobs, but identities built over decades of craftsmanship.

We lost more than manufacturing capacity.

We lost stories.

We lost communities whose relationship with clothing wasn’t aspirational—it was practical, intimate and deeply skilled.

Perhaps that’s why fashion in South Africa often feels disconnected from its own history. We celebrate what we consume more readily than what we produce. We remember the labels but forget the hands that stitched them together.

The older I get, the more I find myself thinking about those hands.

The people whose fingerprints are hidden inside garments hanging in wardrobes around the world.

The machinists who could sew straighter than most designers could sketch.

The pattern makers who understood silhouette before the word became fashionable.

The women and men who quietly built an industry that rarely stopped to celebrate them.

For me, that’s where fashion really begins.

Not on a runway.

Not in Paris.

Not even in a sneaker store.

It begins in a factory in Cape Town, where someone like my grandmother sat behind a sewing machine, helping create luxury long before I knew what luxury meant.

Looking back now, I realise I didn’t grow up around fashion.

I grew up around the people who made it.

The recent BAPE x KidSuper World Cup collection belongs firmly in the second category.

Dropping 48 pairs of shoes is an absurd proposition on paper. Most brands struggle to make one colourway feel meaningful. BAPE and KidSuper somehow found a way to create forty-eight of them, each tied to a different nation, without the project feeling repetitive, forced or purely commercial.

For me, that’s what separates this release from every other football-adjacent drop we’ve seen around the tournament.

It wasn’t just a collection.

It was worldbuilding.

Football Through the Eyes of a Painter

One of the reasons the collaboration works so well is because it feels authentic to both sides.

KidSuper founder Colm Dillane has never hidden his love for football. Whether through his runway shows, creative projects or grassroots initiatives, football has always been part of his creative language. The sport isn’t a trend he’s borrowing from. It’s embedded in the brand’s DNA.

BAPE, meanwhile, has spent decades proving that colour can be a storytelling device. Few brands have built a legacy around loudness quite like BAPE. Camouflage patterns, impossible colour combinations and unapologetic visual excess are part of what made the brand iconic in the first place.

The collection succeeds because neither brand had to compromise.

KidSuper brought the football narrative.

BAPE brought the visual chaos.

The result is a project that feels larger than either brand individually.

Forty-Eight Shoes. Forty-Eight Stories.

The genius of the collection isn’t the number of shoes.

It’s the restraint.

Forty-eight national-inspired colourways could have easily become a merchandising exercise. A checklist of flags translated onto sneakers.

Instead, each pair feels like a small cultural artefact.

The colours aren’t simply references. They’re identifiers. They’re conversation starters. They’re a way for people to locate themselves within the collection.

I found myself scrolling through colourway after colourway looking for the same thing everyone else was looking for:

My team.

My country.

My story.

That’s a powerful instinct to tap into.

My personal top five?

South Africa. Argentina. Uzbekistan. Cabo Verde. Australia.

South Africa felt inevitable. Maybe that’s patriotism talking.

Argentina carries the weight of football history.

Uzbekistan surprised me with how distinctive it felt within the wider collection.

Cabo Verde delivered one of the most beautiful colour combinations in the entire range.

And Australia somehow managed to balance national identity without becoming overly literal.

In a collection of 48 shoes, the fact that people can even debate favourites is a testament to how well executed the project is.

When Collectors Become Collaborators

One detail that shouldn’t get lost in the conversation around this release is the involvement of Dennis Mazur, better known as SneakerDenn.

For years, SneakerDenn has built a reputation as one of the internet’s foremost BAPE STA historians, collectors and storytellers. The kind of person who understands the nuances of the silhouette beyond colourways and resale value. He understands its cultural significance.

That’s why his involvement feels so important.

SneakerDenn contributed to the project’s creative direction and designed six of the final colourways: France, Japan, Sweden, Australia, South Korea and Uruguay.

What I love most about this is what it says about the current state of sneaker culture.

For years we’ve watched brands chase celebrities, athletes and influencers. This project went in a different direction. It elevated someone whose credentials were built through obsession, documentation and genuine love for the product.

SneakerDenn’s involvement feels like a reminder that expertise still matters.

It also adds another layer of authenticity to the collection. Between KidSuper’s lifelong relationship with football, BAPE’s history of fearless design and SneakerDenn’s encyclopedic knowledge of the BAPE STA, the project feels less like a collaboration and more like a summit meeting of people who genuinely care about the culture surrounding the shoe.

When you look at pairs like Australia, Japan or Uruguay, you’re not just seeing country-inspired colourways.

You’re seeing the work of someone who has spent years studying why people fell in love with BAPE STAs in the first place.

In many ways, SneakerDenn’s journey from collector to collaborator might be one of the best stories within the entire project. It proves that in sneaker culture, passion can still open doors that marketing budgets can’t.

The Grandmothers Stole The Show

As much as I love the footwear, my favourite part of the entire campaign wasn’t the sneakers.

It was the casting.

Instead of defaulting to footballers, influencers or celebrities, KidSuper and BAPE used grandmothers representing different nations to model the shoes.

The decision instantly transformed the campaign.

What could have felt like another hype-driven football activation suddenly became human.

Warm.

Personal.

Authentic.

Football is often marketed through elite performance. Speed. Strength. Winning.

This campaign reminded us that football is actually inherited culture.

It’s passed down through generations.

It’s family gatherings.

It’s stories.

It’s identity.

The grandmothers weren’t just models.

They became symbols of national pride, heritage and belonging.

In an industry obsessed with youth, it was refreshing to see age become the hero.

Winning Without Official Sponsorship

Perhaps the most impressive thing about the project is how it navigates the increasingly restrictive ecosystem surrounding global football tournaments.

Major sporting events come with layers of marketing red tape. Official sponsors spend enormous amounts of money securing exclusive rights, making it difficult for brands outside those agreements to participate in the conversation.

Yet BAPE and KidSuper found a loophole.

They didn’t market the tournament.

They marketed culture.

They didn’t sell teams.

They celebrated countries.

They didn’t focus on matches.

They focused on identity.

It’s a subtle but important distinction.

A Distribution Strategy Built For The Internet

What also impressed me was the scale.

Launching forty-eight colourways isn’t simply a design challenge. It’s a distribution challenge.

Every additional SKU introduces complexity. Inventory becomes harder to manage. Demand forecasting becomes less predictable. Regional interest varies dramatically.

Yet that’s exactly what makes the project so compelling.

The collection wasn’t designed for traditional retail logic.

It was designed for internet logic.

The moment the full lineup appeared online, people began sharing, ranking, debating and comparing.

Everyone had a favourite.

Everyone had an opinion.

Everyone had a country.

The collection became content.

And in today’s attention economy, that’s often more valuable than a traditional marketing campaign.

What’s particularly interesting is that the collection was distributed through a combination of KidSuper’s channels, BAPE’s global retail ecosystem and selected regional partners. This allowed the project to maintain exclusivity while still feeling globally accessible.

That balance is incredibly difficult to achieve.

Too limited and the project feels exclusionary.

Too available and it loses its cultural cachet.

BAPE and KidSuper managed to sit in that sweet spot where scarcity fuelled conversation without overshadowing the story itself.

The sheer volume of colourways transformed the release into a social object. It encouraged participation before anyone had even purchased a pair.

The World Cup Sneaker Champions

Every major tournament produces a flood of football-inspired products.

Some are technically better.

Some are more wearable.

Some will probably sell more units.

But very few manage to capture the imagination the way this collection has.

BAPE and KidSuper understood something that many brands still miss.

People don’t fall in love with products.

They fall in love with stories.

By combining football, national identity, generational storytelling, collector expertise, bold design and a distribution model built for online conversation, they created what I believe is the defining sneaker project of the tournament.

Listening back, I realised this playlist says as much about cultural memory as it does about music. Detroit sits alongside Johannesburg. New York shares space with Paris. Neo-soul drifts into underground rap. The result feels less like a playlist and more like a conversation between different Black cultural centres around the world.

If Verona Beach Records has a mission, it’s probably this: collecting source material.

Not nostalgia. Not trends.

Just records that continue to shape the way I think about culture, style, design and storytelling.

Not because it was particularly rare.

Or expensive.

Or even because I still own it.

I remember it because getting it felt almost impossible.

At the time, most international retailers didn’t ship to South Africa. Buying clothes from overseas wasn’t a matter of opening an app and checking out. It required research, patience, and a small amount of luck.

Weeks passed between placing the order and receiving the notification from the Grassy Park Post Office.

When the package finally arrived, I remember holding it for a moment before opening it.

Not because of what was inside.

Because of what it represented.

Access.

To a world that felt impossibly far away.

Today, that feeling is difficult to explain.

An entire generation has grown up with instant access to virtually every brand, every drop, every collaboration, and every corner of culture. But for many of us, streetwear wasn’t just something we consumed.

It was something we chased.

And maybe that’s why my relationship with it has changed so much over the years.

Streetwear Was Never Just About Clothes

Like many people of my generation, I came of age alongside streetwear.

Not the version that now sits comfortably alongside luxury fashion, but the one that felt like a secret language.

The era of message boards, Tumblr dashboards, sneaker forums, blogrolls, and niche online communities.

Back when discovering a brand felt like uncovering buried treasure.

Back when finding a Japanese label, a new sneaker collaboration, or an obscure graphic tee felt like gaining access to information most people didn’t have.

Streetwear wasn’t just something I wore.

It was how I learned about culture.

The clothes were never really the point.

The stories were.

A Supreme box logo wasn’t just a hoodie.

It was New York.

A pair of Nike Dunks wasn’t just a sneaker.

It was skateboarding, music, design, and the internet colliding in a single object.

Every purchase felt like an entry point into a larger world.

And like many young creatives, I wanted access to that world.

I wanted to signal that I understood the references.

That I knew what was happening.

That I belonged.

Chasing Access

Looking back, I realise that much of my relationship with streetwear wasn’t actually about style.

It was about aspiration.

Streetwear gave me a framework for who I wanted to become.

Creative.

Connected.

Culturally literate.

Interesting.

The clothes acted as evidence of an identity that was still under construction.

I don’t think enough people talk about this.

When you’re young, fashion often serves a purpose beyond aesthetics.

It becomes a shortcut.

A way of trying on identities before you’ve fully grown into them.

The brands become proxies for the person you’re trying to become.

And for a while, that’s enough.

Because the journey is exciting.

Every new purchase feels like progress.

Every new reference feels like a level unlocked.

Every new discovery feels like proof that you’re getting closer.

Closer to what exactly, I’m still not entirely sure.

But I remember the feeling.

When Style Stops Doing the Heavy Lifting

These days, my relationship with clothing is different.

Not because I care less.

Because I need less.

That’s an important distinction.

I still appreciate a great collaboration.

I still notice details.

I still enjoy archive imagery, old campaigns, beautifully designed products, and brands with a strong point of view.

I still love fashion.

But I no longer expect it to tell people who I am.

When you’re younger, style often becomes a shortcut to identity.

You wear the thing before you’ve fully become the person.

The clothes help close the gap.

As you get older, that relationship starts to change.

At least it did for me.

These days I find myself drawn to pieces that would have seemed impossibly boring to my younger self.

Good trousers.

A well-cut jacket.

Quality knitwear.

Comfortable shoes.

Clothes that fit into my life rather than become the centre of it.

Not because I’ve become less interested in fashion.

Because I’m more interested in everything else as well.

Health.

Relationships.

Financial stability.

Building a home.

Creating meaningful work.

Things that take years rather than seasons.

Things that don’t arrive in a shipping box.

The Shift From Hype to Substance

There’s an irony in all of this.

For years I thought personal style was something you achieved by acquiring more.

More clothes.

More brands.

More knowledge.

More references.

More everything.

What I’ve come to realise is that personal style often emerges through subtraction.

It’s what remains after the performance ends.

After you’ve stopped dressing for approval.

After you’ve stopped dressing for your peers.

After you’ve stopped dressing for the algorithm.

What’s left is usually much quieter.

And much more honest.

I think that’s part of why so many people feel disconnected from contemporary fashion discourse.

The conversation is still largely focused on what’s new.

Most people, however, eventually become interested in what’s enduring.

The latest drop matters less.

The life you’re building matters more.

Streetwear Was a Gateway, Not a Destination

Streetwear taught an entire generation how to care about culture.

For that, I’ll always be grateful.

It introduced us to design, photography, music, storytelling, branding, and community.

For many of us, it was the gateway drug.

But gateways aren’t destinations.

They’re entry points.

The funny thing is that after spending years chasing access to culture, I eventually realised what I was really looking for wasn’t access at all.

It was identity.

And somewhere along the way, I stopped looking for that identity in the things I bought and started finding it in the life I was building.

Today, I still love clothes.

I still love fashion.

I still love culture.

But I no longer need them to tell me who I am.

And that’s probably the biggest style shift I’ve ever made.

For most of the twentieth century, luxury operated on a relatively simple grammar. Scarcity produced value. Value produced status. Status produced desire. A Rolex told a story about access, about worlds you could or couldn’t enter. The Hermès Birkin worked on the same principle. So did the penthouse, the table at the right restaurant, the season tickets. These were objects that most people simply could not have, and their unavailability was precisely what made them legible as symbols of power and arrival.

Then the internet arrived, and it quietly dismantled the whole architecture.

When the archive opened, recognition stopped being enough

What the internet destroyed, more than anything else, was the map. Before it, fashion knowledge was inseparable from physical proximity to the right city, the right store, the right crowd. The hierarchy was geographical as much as financial. Now a nineteen-year-old in Joburg or Lagos or Seoul can spend an afternoon navigating archive pages, studying the cut of a 1998 Helmut Lang jacket, learning why the original Sambas wore differently from the reissue and emerge from that session with a more calibrated sensory education than someone who spent a decade on Sloane Street. The archive is open. The references are global. The distance between knowing and not-knowing has been abolished.

This should, in theory, have been purely liberating. And in many ways it was. But it produced a secondary effect that nobody quite anticipated: when taste can be researched, the act of research is no longer enough to confer it. Knowing the references doesn’t mean you know what to do with them. Owning the item doesn’t mean you understand its context. The internet gave everyone the vocabulary, but vocabulary without grammar is just noise. What the newly flat landscape of global aesthetic access actually did was expose something that had always been true but was previously easier to disguise: that genuine discernment — the capacity to look at the full picture and choose wisely, restrain deliberately, build something coherent — is a different skill entirely from recognition. And unlike recognition, it doesn’t transfer by download.

Pinterest accelerated this. So did moodboard culture, the archive page economy, the globalisation of aesthetics through algorithmic feeds that deliver the same references to Cape Town and Copenhagen simultaneously. The result is a world where aesthetic synchronisation is the default. Everyone is working from the same source material. The question that separates people is no longer what they’ve seen, it’s what they’ve actually understood.

This is the shift that reshapes what status means. Because in an environment of total visual access, the signal value of a purchase depends almost entirely on context. Wearing something expensive is no longer sufficient evidence of cultural sophistication. You have to wear it correctly. You have to understand why it works. You have to know what you’re not wearing just as clearly as you know what you are. And that kind of knowing isn’t purchasable. It’s cultivated. That’s taste and it has become genuinely scarce in a way that the goods themselves no longer are.

The private language of restraint

What’s interesting about this moment is that the brands which seem to carry the most cultural weight are, almost uniformly, the ones that resist legibility. Loro Piana barely advertises. Its monogram, for most of its history, was barely visible. The cashmere is unmistakably good, but only to someone who already knows. Arc’teryx operates in a similar register, technical, restrained, purposeful, beloved not for spectacle but for the precision of its thinking. These are brands that function as a kind of private language: they communicate only to the people already fluent in the vocabulary.

This private-language quality is what the most culturally attuned labels have always understood, and what the flashier end of luxury has gradually lost purchase on. A logomania wave can manufacture short-term desire, but it also democratises the signal. The moment the logo is the message, the message can be replicated by anyone. Hidden NY and JJJJound built entire cultural ecosystems around the opposite premise, curation so rigorous, so tonally specific, so built around the edit rather than the acquisition, that the real communication wasn’t about any single product. It was about the sensibility behind the choices. The perspective. The restraint. The intelligence of the selection itself.

That’s what taste is. Not aesthetics. Not style, exactly. A perspective that makes choices legible as something more than consumption. A point of view that accumulates into something recognisable and, crucially, impossible to fake through spending alone.

Restraint as the new spectacle

Contemporary media has already begun to map this shift. The cultural resonance of Succession wasn’t accidental it was a show deeply invested in the language of understated wealth, and it became a masterclass in how restraint itself becomes the ultimate marker of arrival. Every deliberately worn cashmere, every absence of logos, every too-quiet interior was making an argument: that the truly powerful don’t need to announce themselves. The Roys dressed the way really old money has always dressed. Their aesthetic confidence came from the assumption that they owed no one a demonstration. The audience read it immediately and correctly and, importantly, they found it more compelling than spectacle.

The appetite for that sensibility has widened. Modern aspiration, particularly among younger people, is no longer primarily about accumulation. It increasingly expresses itself through curation, not just of clothes, but of interiors, playlists, coffee rituals, wellness practices, typography choices, the books left visible on the shelf, the ceramics on the counter. Lifestyle, in the fullest sense of the word, has become the medium. And because lifestyle is lived and not purchased, the cultural capital embedded in a coherent, considered way of moving through the world is resistant to being bought wholesale. It accrues through time, through attention, through the development of genuine discernment.

This is increasingly visible in Cape Town where a younger generation is navigating the intersection of global aesthetic influence and deeply local cultural reference in ways that feel genuinely new. The people who carry the most cultural authority here aren’t necessarily the ones with the biggest budgets. They’re the ones with the sharpest edit. The ones who can hold local and global, archive and contemporary, without forcing the synthesis. That capacity — to curate rather than simply acquire — is the currency that’s actually in short supply.

The self as the final edit

There’s a distinction worth drawing here between wealth signalling and taste signalling, because they’ve come apart in ways that matter. Wealth signalling is, at its core, about broadcasting access. It says: I can afford this. Taste signalling says something different and harder to fabricate. It says: I understand this. I know why this and not that. I’ve thought about the proportion. I’ve considered the reference. I’ve arrived at an opinion through genuine engagement with the material and the opinion expresses something about me that a credit card limit cannot.

The market has absorbed this shift, even if it hasn’t fully articulated it. Community validation has replaced traditional gatekeepers as the mechanism through which cultural capital is conferred. The editors and buyers and stylists who once controlled the grammar of aspiration have been supplemented (sometimes supplanted) by networks of people online who are, collectively, operating with extraordinary sophistication. The crowd is often smarter than the institution. And the crowd is increasingly interested in perspective over price, in restraint over volume, in the coherence behind a choice rather than what it cost.

What this means, practically, is that individuality now derives more from curation than from acquisition. The harder, rarer work is not finding the thing it’s building a relationship with things that over time produces something legible as a self. A consistent point of view. A way of moving through the world that feels earned rather than assembled. That’s what people are actually responding to when someone’s taste registers as authoritative. It’s not the objects. It’s the evidence of long attention. The sense that whoever made these choices has been paying close, honest, personal attention to the world and that the choices reflect something real about who they are.

The internet democratised access in ways that were genuinely profound. The archive is open. The references are available. The distance between Lagos and London, between Grassy Park and the global conversation, has been compressed into a Wi-Fi connection. That flattening was real, and it mattered. But it had a consequence that only becomes visible from inside the new landscape: when access is equal, the only thing that isn’t is how deeply you’ve sat with what you’ve found. How honestly you’ve filtered it through your own experience. How willing you were to reject what didn’t belong and hold onto what did

It rehearsed it.

Before the product was even officially revealed, TikTok edits, AI-generated renderings, fake leaks, speculative thumbnails, reaction videos, and imaginary product mockups had already created a fully formed cultural event. Entire communities emotionally committed to a watch that technically didn’t exist yet.

People queued mentally before they queued physically.

That’s what fascinated me most about the frenzy.

Not the watches.

Not even the collaboration itself.

But the way the internet collectively hallucinated a product into cultural relevance before reality had a chance to catch up.

And in that gap between expectation and reality, the Swatch x AP moment exposed three things very clearly:

1. We are entering a dangerous new era of AI-assisted media illiteracy.

2. Luxury consumers increasingly pursue symbolic proximity to status, not ownership itself.

3. Modern hype culture runs on participation more than products.

The collaboration became less of a watch launch and more of a live case study in internet psychology.

The Internet Manufactured Its Own Reality

The most revealing part of this entire rollout was how little official information existed during peak conversation.

People weren’t responding to the actual product.

They were responding to:

• AI-generated Royal Oak mockups

• speculative TikToks

• clickbait thumbnails

• repost pages

• stitched reactions

• rumor aggregation

• aesthetic assumptions

• and algorithmically amplified fantasy

The internet essentially crowdsourced an imaginary collaboration and emotionally attached itself to it.

That’s significant.

Because five years ago, fake visuals still carried friction.

Today, AI imagery moves at the speed of belief.

The average user no longer evaluates whether something is real. They evaluate whether it feels plausible enough to share.

That’s a massive shift.

Media literacy used to involve identifying misinformation.

Now it involves identifying synthetic cultural reality.

And the Swatch x AP discourse revealed how fragile that distinction has become.

People saw AI-generated Royal Oaks in Bioceramic and immediately accepted them as inevitable because culturally, the idea already made sense.

Swatch had already normalized accessible luxury through the MoonSwatch. Luxury brands already rely on collaborations. Streetwear already taught consumers that exclusivity matters more than utility.

So the internet filled in the blanks.

Reality became secondary to narrative coherence.

That should concern every brand, marketer, and media platform.

Because AI is no longer just generating images.

It’s generating anticipation.

The Era of Status Rehearsal

What fascinated me equally was watching people defend — and attack — a product they never intended to buy in the first place.

That’s when I realized this collaboration exposed something deeper:

We are living in the era of status rehearsal.

People no longer need access to elite luxury. They need access to the performance of elite luxury.

That distinction changes everything.

The Royal Oak has become one of the strongest status symbols in modern culture because it sits at the intersection of:

• wealth

• hip-hop

• athlete culture

• finance culture

• internet flex culture

• and aspirational masculinity

Owning one signals entry into a very specific social mythology.

The Swatch collaboration disrupted that mythology by lowering the symbolic barrier to entry.

And that’s why reactions became so emotional.

Some people celebrated the democratization of luxury. Others felt the cultural value of AP was being diluted.

But both reactions revealed the same underlying truth:

Luxury today is less about craftsmanship than social positioning.

If it were purely about watchmaking, nobody would care this much.

The emotional response came from the perceived collapse of exclusivity.

Because luxury brands don’t just sell products anymore. They sell distance.

And collaborations like this compress that distance.

That’s why the internet treats these launches like cultural elections.

The memes. The outrage. The think pieces. The queue discourse. The resale speculation. The luxury gatekeeping. The TikTok reactions.

That was the product.

And honestly, this is where brands like Swatch are smarter than most luxury houses.

They understand that modern consumers don’t just want ownership. They want participation.

Participation in:

• a moment

• a meme

• a conversation

• an algorithmic event

• a social identity

• a digitally recognized cultural experience

That’s why people lined up for MoonSwatches. It’s why sneaker drops still work. It’s why JJJJound can sell minimalism as aspiration. It’s why Hidden NY transformed taste curation into cultural authority.

Scarcity is no longer just economic.

It’s social.

AI Has Changed Hype Forever

As someone working across fashion, sportstyle, and entertainment culture, I think the industry still underestimates what AI is about to do to consumer perception.

Because AI doesn’t just accelerate misinformation.

It accelerates desire.

And desire moves markets faster than truth.

The Swatch x AP frenzy proved that people are now willing to emotionally invest in entirely speculative realities if those realities align with existing cultural narratives.

That changes how hype gets manufactured.

Historically, brands controlled aspiration through:

• celebrity co-signs

• editorial placement

• scarcity

• retail access

• and media relationships

Now communities can generate hype autonomously.

A few believable renders. A repost page. A stitched TikTok. A fake leak. A Reddit thread.

And suddenly the internet creates consensus before confirmation.

That’s an entirely new power structure.

And frankly, most consumers are not equipped for it.

We are entering a period where media literacy is no longer optional cultural intelligence. It’s survival.

Because AI-generated imagery doesn’t need to fool everyone. It only needs to move fast enough to shape perception before verification arrives.

That’s exactly what happened here.

What This Frenzy Actually Revealed

The Swatch x AP collaboration revealed something bigger than watches.

It revealed that modern luxury culture now operates somewhere between:

• entertainment

• simulation

• aspiration

• identity performance

• and algorithmic storytelling

Consumers increasingly buy symbols before products.

And the internet increasingly rewards participation before understanding.

That combination is extremely powerful.

But also dangerous.

Because when hype becomes detached from reality, brands lose control of narrative ownership.

Communities start building parallel realities around products. And sometimes those imagined realities become culturally stronger than the real thing.

That’s the world fashion, luxury, and entertainment now operate in.

A world where:

• AI creates believable fantasy at scale

• audiences reward speed over accuracy

• status gets rehearsed publicly online

• and cultural relevance is measured through discourse velocity

The Swatch x AP frenzy wasn’t really about watches.

It was a preview.

A preview of what happens when AI, aspiration, and algorithmic culture fully collide.

And honestly?

We’re still very early.

Own the conversation. Own the moment. Own the culture. It became the default ambition and honestly, you can see why. If you’re spending serious money to show up somewhere, you want to feel like it’s yours.

But here’s the problem: culture doesn’t work like real estate. You can’t buy it, fence it off, and put your name on it. And the brands that try the ones that parachute into a movement, a subculture, a moment that was never really about them, almost always end up making it smaller. More diluted. Less interesting than it was before they arrived.

The audience feels it immediately, even if they can’t articulate why. Something that felt alive starts to feel managed.

The better question

Most brands walk into a cultural moment asking: how do we own this?

The ones that actually resonate are asking something different: what’s already alive here, and how do we make it better?

That’s the +1.

Not the headliner. Not the sponsor plastered across every surface. The presence that makes the thing more of what it already is — more resourced, more visible, more possible — without redirecting attention back to itself.

It’s a supporting role. And most brands underestimate how powerful a supporting role can be, because they’re so focused on being the main character.

What this looks like in practice

The +1 isn’t passive. It’s not about shrinking or being invisible. It’s about being genuinely useful to something that was going to happen with or without you.

It means showing up before there’s anything obvious to gain. It means adding — access, platform, resource, energy — without attaching strings that redirect the story. It means trusting that if you make the moment better, people will notice you were there.

The alternative, forcing yourself to the centre, usually just reminds people that brands are brands. And once that thought is in the room, it’s hard to get it out.

Why this is actually harder

The +1 requires something most brand strategy doesn’t leave much room for: restraint.

It means resisting the urge to put your name on everything. It means measuring success by what the culture gained, not just what the brand extracted. It means accepting that some of the best work you do won’t have your logo prominently attached to it and being okay with that, because the people who matter will know.

That’s a harder sell internally than “we owned the moment.” But it’s a truer one.

The cultural ledger

Every time a brand shows up in culture, it’s either depositing or withdrawing.

Withdrawing looks like: taking a moment that meant something to people and turning it into a vehicle for your message. Depositing looks like: making that moment bigger, better, or more accessible than it would have been on its own.

Brands that consistently deposit build something genuinely valuable, a kind of cultural credibility that can’t be bought directly. It has to be earned over time, through the accumulation of moments where you gave more than you took.

The +1 is the posture that makes that possible.

One thing to sit with

Think about the last time a brand genuinely added to something you cared about — a community, a creative scene, a cultural moment — without making it about themselves.

How did it feel? And how did you feel about that brand afterwards?

That’s the feeling this is about. It’s reproducible. It’s a choice.

Most brands just aren’t making it.

I can’t find it anywhere.

No trailer. No clips. No screenshots. No torrent. No DVD. Not even a proper poster. Just fragments—an IMDb page, a paperback tie-in, a few academic references that read more like footnotes than recognition.

The film is Stoney: The One and Only (1984).

And the fact that it’s this hard to find in 2026 should bother us more than it does.

A film that existed and then didn’t

At the most basic level, Stoney is a boxing story.

A township narrative. An underdog arc. A fighter navigating a system shaped by hustlers, promoters, and survival economics. It sits comfortably alongside global 80s tropes Rocky, street-level ambition, physical resilience but grounded in a distinctly South African reality.

But that’s not the interesting part.

The interesting part is how it was made, and where it lived.

Because Stoney wasn’t just a film. It was part of a broader ecosystem:

• tied to a Stoney ginger beer campaign

• released alongside a paperback book

• distributed through non-traditional channels

This wasn’t just storytelling. It was early branded content, long before that term existed. A hybrid of advertising, cinema, and mass-market publishing targeted not at elite audiences, but at everyday South Africans.

And yet, despite all of that it’s gone.

The cast: a missing piece of cultural memory

One of the most overlooked aspects of Stoney is the people in it.

They were part of a generation of performers who:

• built careers across stage and screen during apartheid

• helped shape early Black South African storytelling traditions

• worked in an industry that rarely preserved their output

And that’s where the loss compounds.

When a film like Stoney disappears, it’s not just the story that goes with it, it’s:

• performances

• character interpretations

• accents, gestures, physicality

• the lived texture of a specific moment in South African culture

We talk a lot about preserving films.
But what we’re really preserving is people’s work.

Right now, some of that work is effectively inaccessible.

The visual language we can’t fully access

Even without a surviving print, you can piece together what Stoney must have looked like.

Everything about its context points to a very specific visual grammar:

• High-contrast, stylised lighting typical of 80s cinema

• Boxing iconography — sweat, motion, impact, bodies under pressure

• Township environments used not as backdrop, but as narrative texture

• Fashion of the time — bold colour, sharp silhouettes, aspirational styling

There’s also a strong likelihood of cross-pollination between advertising and cinema:

• compositions that feel like posters

• characters framed with a kind of commercial clarity

• moments designed to be iconic, not just narrative

And then there’s the cinematography.

Films from this parallel ecosystem often leaned into:

• functional but expressive camera work

• handheld or minimally stabilised shots in real environments

• a mix of staged drama and documentary-like immediacy

Not because it was trendy but because it was practical.

Limited resources tend to produce a certain kind of visual honesty.
And that honesty becomes a style.

The problem is we can’t study any of this properly.

We can infer it.
We can approximate it.
But we can’t reference it directly.

And that’s a loss, especially now, when so many South African creatives are trying to define a visual language that feels rooted and original.

The uncomfortable question

How does a feature film disappear?

Not metaphorically. Literally.

How does something that was written, shot, edited, distributed, watched—twice, in my case—end up with no digital trace?

The answer isn’t that it wasn’t important.

It’s that the system responsible for preserving it either didn’t exist or didn’t prioritise it.

South Africa didn’t have one film industry

It had at least two.

On one side, there was the formal industry:

• cinema releases

• government-backed productions

• films that were archived, catalogued, and eventually digitised

On the other, there was something else entirely:

• township screenings

• VHS circulation

• community halls and informal exhibition networks

Stoney belongs to the second category.

A parallel film economy. One that served Black audiences during apartheid, operated outside of mainstream infrastructure, and, crucially, was never properly preserved.

So when we talk about “South African film history,” what we’re often really talking about is what survived, not what existed.

The brand layer nobody talks about

There’s another detail that makes Stoney even more interesting.

It was tied to a commercial brand Stoney ginger beer.

Not as a product placement. As a concept.

Academics have described it as something that “brought the billboard to life.” That’s not just marketing, it’s a different way of thinking about storytelling. One where narrative, identity, and advertising collapse into each other.

Today, we call that:

• branded content

• IP ecosystems

• cross-platform storytelling

In 1984, in South Africa, it was just… Stoney.

And yet, while global brands archive every campaign, every asset, every iteration of their history—this one has effectively vanished from public view.

Why it disappeared

There isn’t a single reason. It’s structural.

• No digitisation pipeline
  Films like this were never converted into digital formats.

• Fragmented ownership
  When a film sits between a production company and a commercial brand, rights get complicated.

• No commercial incentive
  There’s no obvious market for restoring a film nobody can currently access.

• Archival neglect
  Township cinema wasn’t prioritised for preservation.

Put simply: the system moved on, and Stoney didn’t come with it.

Why this matters now

It would be easy to treat this as a niche curiosity. A bit of lost trivia.

But it points to something bigger.

Right now, South African creatives are building:

• new visual languages

• new storytelling formats

• new cultural references

And yet, much of what we’re building is shaped by:

• American cinema

• British media

• global internet culture

Not because we lack our own references.

But because we can’t access them.

You can’t reference what you can’t see.

And films like Stoney sit in that gap—evidence of a creative history that existed, but isn’t available to be built on.

This isn’t about nostalgia

I’m not claiming Stoney was a masterpiece.

I don’t even have enough access to say that with confidence.

That’s the point.

This isn’t about celebrating a film. It’s about questioning how easily a piece of culture can fall out of reach and what that says about the systems we rely on to remember things for us.

Because if one film can disappear like this, how many others already have?

What needs to happen next

If we take this seriously, then there are some obvious next steps:

• Archives need to prioritise digitisation
  Not just preservation, but accessibility.

• Brands need to open their historical vaults
  Especially when they’ve been part of cultural production.

• Creators need to document what they find
  Because informal discovery might be the only way these things resurface.

A film you can’t watch

Right now, Stoney: The One and Only exists in a strange state.

Not lost. Not found. Just… inaccessible.

A film that was seen, but can’t be re-seen.
A piece of culture that exists, but can’t be referenced.

And maybe that’s the real story.

Not just that we made things.

But that we didn’t build the systems to keep them.

And now we’re trying to create a future without a fully visible past.

Early in your career, you’re supposed to feel lost.

That tension you’re feeling between what you like, what you’re good at, and what the market values is the work. Not something to avoid.

Look at Virgil Abloh. He studied engineering, then architecture, then became one of the most influential fashion designers of his generation. At no point was that a “clean” path.

Or Tyler, the Creator who went from chaotic internet outsider to a Grammy-winning artist with a fully realized aesthetic universe.

Neither of them followed a syllabus. They followed curiosity aggressively.

Your job right now is not to be certain. Your job is to explore widely enough that your taste starts to sharpen.

2. Taste Is Your Real Degree

The institutions you’re in will teach you tools. That matters. But tools are table stakes.

What separates you later is taste.

Taste is pattern recognition. It’s knowing why something works not just that it works.

You build taste by:

• Consuming obsessively (fashion archives, music, films, campaigns)

• Deconstructing what you consume

• Recreating it badly

• Then doing it again, slightly better

Ann Demeulemeester didn’t become iconic because she followed trends. She built a world consistently, over decades.

Frank Ocean disappeared for years at a time, only to return with work that redefined the emotional and sonic palette of his genre.

Taste takes time. And time is exactly what you’re trying to rush.

3. Frustration Is Data

When something you make doesn’t match what you see in your head, it’s frustrating.

Good.

That gap between your taste and your execution is where growth lives.

Most people misinterpret this phase. They think:

“I’m not good enough.”

What’s actually happening is:

“My taste is improving faster than my skill.”

That’s a sign you’re moving in the right direction.

The worst place to be is the opposite: where your skills plateau and your taste doesn’t evolve. That’s where mediocrity calcifies.

4. You Don’t Find Your Style. You Accumulate It.

A lot of students are obsessed with “finding their style.”

That’s not how it works.

Style is a residue. It’s what’s left after:

• Your references

• Your influences

• Your constraints

• Your repetitions

…have been filtered through you enough times.

Raf Simons built his language from youth culture, music, and subversion not from trying to “be original.”

Kanye West built entire eras by sampling, recontextualizing, and collaborating.

Originality is often just well-curated influence.

5. Momentum Beats Perfection

A lot of you are waiting to be “ready” before you put work out.

You won’t be.

The people who move fastest in creative industries are not the most talented. They’re the most prolific.

• They ship work

• They learn publicly

• They iterate quickly

Perfection is a delay tactic dressed up as standards.

You’re better off making 50 imperfect things than 3 “perfect” ones.

6. Your Network Is Your Distribution Channel

Talent is not enough. It never has been.

Creative careers are ecosystems:

• Who sees your work

• Who trusts you

• Who brings you into rooms

Start building that now.

Not in a transactional way — but through shared taste, collaboration, and consistency.

The student next to you? That’s not competition. That’s future creative direction, future brand management, future agency leadership.

Your peer group is your first industry. Treat it like one.

7. There Will Be Doubt. It Doesn’t Go Away.

At every level of your career, the doubt just changes shape.

• Early: “Am I good enough?”

• Mid: “Am I relevant?”

• Later: “Am I repeating myself?”

There is no stage where you feel fully secure. The goal is not to eliminate doubt — it’s to build a relationship with it.

Use it as a signal:

• If you’re too comfortable, you’re not pushing

• If you’re constantly overwhelmed, you’re not grounding

You’re looking for tension you can sustain.

8. The Long Game Is the Only Game

The biggest advantage you have right now is time.

Not just time to succeed but time to fail repeatedly without consequence.

Most people waste this by trying to accelerate too quickly:

• Chasing titles instead of skills

• Chasing visibility instead of substance

• Chasing trends instead of voice

The creatives who last 10–20 years are the ones who:

• Stay curious

• Stay adaptable

• Keep rebuilding themselves

If you take one thing from this:

You are not behind. You are early.

But only if you use this phase correctly.

• Experiment more than you think is necessary

• Fail more than feels comfortable

• Pay attention to what you’re drawn to (that’s your signal)

• And most importantly, keep going when it stops feeling fun

And that’s usually right before things start to click.

I’ve spent fifteen years in rooms where culture gets negotiated before it gets released, sneaker design studios, backstage at fashion week, music video treatments at 2 a.m., brand brainstorms where everyone is chasing “what’s next.”

And here’s what I’m increasingly convinced of: in the age of artificial intelligence, taste will be the most valuable currency in culture.

Not access.
Not information.
Not even skill.

Taste.

The Democratization of Execution

When I started in the industry, technical execution was a moat.

You needed photographers who understood lighting ratios. Designers who could draft. Editors who could cut on Avid. Producers who knew the right people. Access to software alone was power.

Now?

Anyone with Wi-Fi and a prompt can generate a campaign visual, a soundtrack, a runway concept, even a speculative sneaker collab in seconds. Tools powered by companies like OpenAI and Midjourney have collapsed the distance between imagination and output.

Execution has been commodified.

And when execution becomes abundant, discernment becomes scarce.

AI Doesn’t Have Taste. It Has Patterns.

Artificial intelligence is extraordinary at synthesizing patterns. It ingests millions of images, silhouettes, references, cultural signals, then predicts what should come next.

But prediction is not taste.

Taste is knowing when not to follow the pattern.

It’s what made Phoebe Philo’s restraint at Céline radical in a maximalist era.
It’s what allowed Virgil Abloh to reference irony without being consumed by it.
It’s what made Hedi Slimane’s silhouette shifts feel polarizing yet inevitable.

AI can remix their archives. It can simulate their aesthetics. It can generate “in the style of.”

But it cannot feel cultural tension. It cannot sense fatigue in a room. It cannot walk into a club in Cape Town or Lagos or London and intuit that the energy has shifted.

Taste lives in that intuition.

From Gatekeepers to Curators

For decades, institutions like Vogue or retailers like Colette operated as cultural gatekeepers. They filtered what deserved visibility.

AI dismantles gatekeeping because volume overwhelms hierarchy. When infinite content can be produced, no single institution can suppress or elevate everything.

So the power shifts.

From gatekeeping → to curating.
From producing → to selecting.

The strategist, the editor, the stylist, the DJ, the brand director, their value increasingly lies in choosing what not to amplify.

In a world of generative abundance, editing becomes authorship.

The Death of Cool-by-Access

In the sneaker industry, exclusivity used to hinge on scarcity, limited drops, backdoor pairs, regional releases. If you could access it, you were inside.

AI erodes that logic. You can now visualize your own grail collaboration without waiting for a brand to approve it. You can render a fantasy campaign that looks indistinguishable from something Nike or Balenciaga might produce.

Scarcity is no longer technical. It’s conceptual.

What will separate the noise is not who can generate the most content, but who can generate something culturally resonant.

That requires context. Memory. Lived experience.

Taste is accumulated exposure plus refined judgment.

The Return of Human Signal

We’re entering a paradoxical moment.

The more artificial content floods the system, the more we will crave signals of human specificity:

• A flawed casting choice that feels intentional.

• A reference so niche it couldn’t have been statistically predicted.

• A risk that doesn’t optimize for engagement metrics.

AI optimizes for probability. Taste often thrives in improbability.

When I think about the future of culture, I don’t imagine a world where designers are replaced. I imagine a world where the real differentiator is the person behind the prompt — their cultural literacy, their editorial restraint, their instinct for timing.

In other words: their taste.

Why This Matters for Luxury’s Audience

Luxury has always been about discernment.

Not price. Not logo. Discernment.

In an AI-driven landscape, luxury brands will not win by being the most technologically advanced. They will win by having the clearest aesthetic conviction.

Consumers, especially digitally native ones, can spot synthetic trend-chasing instantly. They want perspective, not just production.

The next era of influence won’t belong to those who can generate endlessly. It will belong to those who can say:

“This is the one.”

Taste as Strategy

From a marketing perspective, this shift is seismic.

Brands that over-rely on AI to chase micro-trends will dilute their identity. Brands that use AI as a tool — but maintain strong creative direction — will compound cultural equity.

The strategist’s role evolves from campaign manager to cultural editor.

The creative director becomes less about designing every asset and more about protecting the point of view.

The future is not anti-AI. It’s post-novelty.

And when the novelty fades, what remains is judgment.

In the entertainment, sneaker, and fashion industries, I’ve seen waves of disruption — digital photography, social media, e-commerce, influencer marketing. Each time, people panicked about democratization.

But what endured wasn’t access.
It was perspective.

AI will flatten execution.
Taste will create hierarchy.

And in a world where everyone can make something, the rarest skill will be knowing what actually deserves to exist.

At 24, I didn’t know anyone in fashion. I didn’t live near it. I didn’t even understand its internal language yet ateliers, maisons, couture versus ready-to-wear those were just words in captions beneath images that loaded slowly on a shaky internet connection. Fashion, to me, existed as flattened pixels: lookbooks, blogspots, Tumblr archives, a few grainy runway uploads on early YouTube. I didn’t know anyone in the industry. No stylists, no buyers, no photographers. Fashion existed for me through screens, blog archives, low-resolution runway uploads, scattered forum threads dissecting collections I barely understood.

Clothes, in my daily life, had function: identity, status, belonging, masculinity.
Fashion was something else entirely. Remote. Operatic. Untouchable.

I understood clothing as culture, what people wore in the city, how subcultures telegraphed identity, but high fashion felt like mythology. Not aspirational. Not luxurious. Mythological. Something closer to opera than retail.

Then I watched the John Galliano’s Fall/Winter 2009 show.

And it genuinely felt like discovering a portal.

The First Encounter

I didn’t experience it in real time. That’s important.
I encountered it the way many outsiders do, accidentally, late, and alone.

A recommendation spiral: runway videos → backstage → makeup close-ups → still photography. And suddenly the screen wasn’t showing clothes anymore. It was showing narrative architecture.

The models weren’t models. They were spectral figures moving through an invented climate, frost-stiffened silhouettes, veiled faces, pale skin sculpted into something between aristocracy and apparition. The now-famous “frozen Ukrainian bride” theme, Balkan and Slavic folklore refracted through couture discipline wasn’t a reference point for me culturally. But emotionally, I understood it instantly.

This wasn’t fashion trying to look beautiful.

It was fashion trying to be somewhere else entirely.

Why It Hit So Hard

Where I lived, clothing solved practical and social equations: heat, masculinity, affordability, status signaling, belonging.

Even expressive dressing like streetwear, vintage, sportswear remixing still existed inside reality. You wore clothes to go somewhere. To meet someone. To be seen by peers.

Galliano didn’t care about that.

Nothing in that show was designed for the life I understood.

The silhouettes restricted movement. The textures implied cold environments that didn’t exist in my climate. The garments demanded posture rather than comfort. Even the makeup, Pat McGrath’s sculpted pallor, erased individuality instead of enhancing it.

It was the first time I understood fashion as world-building rather than self-expression.

And that distinction permanently altered my taste. I even got it tattooed

The makeup, pale, sculpted, almost drained of human warmth, was crucial.

Until then, I understood beauty in enhancement terms: grooming, polish, presentation. Here, makeup removed personality instead of highlighting it. Faces became porcelain surfaces for narrative projection.

The model stopped being an individual. She became a character inside a constructed mythology.

That was my first understanding of fashion as total image construction, not clothing plus styling, but body, posture, hair, and garment operating as a single authored statement.

Fashion moved closer to cinema than apparel.

The Moment Taste Became Architectural

Before that moment, my relationship to clothing was stylistic. After that moment, it became architectural.

I stopped asking:

“Does this look good?”

I started asking:

“What universe does this belong to?”

Galliano wasn’t concerned with trends, wearability, or even flattering the wearer. It was about contour, shaping the human form into a character inside a narrative.

The waistlines elongated torsos into aristocratic fragility. The layering created protective armor rather than decoration. Textures behaved like climate: fur became atmosphere, lace became frost, chiffon became breath.

I realised avant-garde fashion wasn’t exaggeration for attention.

It was storytelling through geometry.

Why Watching From Outside the Fashion Industry Mattered

I didn’t know critics’ reactions.
I didn’t understand brand heritage.
I wasn’t measuring it against the season’s competitors.

I experienced it purely as visual art entering everyday life through a laptop screen in an urban environment far removed from couture.

And distance sharpened impact.

Without industry context, I wasn’t evaluating success.
I was encountering imagination.

The Awakening

That show didn’t make me want to wear couture.

It made me want authorship.

I started noticing designers who built universes instead of wardrobes. I gravitated toward collections that communicated mood before utility. I became suspicious of clothes that only referenced other clothes.

It taught me fashion’s highest form isn’t dressing people, it’s expanding perception. Streetwear influences culture. Tailoring signals discipline. But avant-garde fashion alters how reality itself can be visualised.

High fashion stopped being expensive clothing. It became a language for constructing alternate realities.

And once you see fashion that way, you can’t unsee it.

Every preference I have now: contour over trend, restraint over decoration, atmosphere over branding traces back to that encounter.

A runway show seen alone, late, accidentally.

Looking Back

At 24, sitting in a city far removed from runways, I wasn’t the intended audience for that collection.

But maybe distance is exactly what allowed the impact.

Without proximity to industry discourse, I experienced it purely as art not brand strategy, not cultural positioning, not commerce.

Just a strange, cold, impossible world arriving through a screen.

That was the moment fashion stopped being about clothing for me.

It became about imagination with a human silhouette as its canvas.

And every taste I’ve developed since every attraction to contour, drama, restraint, and atmosphere traces back to that night I stumbled into winter.

Every love affair ends the same way: quietly at first, then all at once.

Right now, the fashion industry is living through the aftermath of a long relationship, the one between streetwear and luxury. What once felt like mutual admiration has faded into indifference. No scandal. No dramatic split. Just the growing recognition that the model has stopped working.

As a marketer in the fashion and lifestyle space, I’ve helped build brands during streetwear’s ascent into luxury. I’ve positioned hoodies as collectibles, sneakers as investment pieces, and collaborations as cultural milestones. For years, the equation was simple: streetwear delivered relevance; luxury delivered validation.

But validation, when chased too long, becomes dilution.

How Streetwear Lost Its Edge

Streetwear was never defined by price or polish. Its value came from context who wore it, where it came from, and what it signaled culturally. It was local, specific, and deeply tied to real communities.

Luxury operates on a different logic: aspiration, distance, and exclusion.

The streetwear and luxury crossover worked when it felt like an exchange. It failed when it turned into extraction. Once every luxury house released a sneaker and every logo hoodie carried a four-figure price tag, the message broke down. Culture became styling. Rebellion became a seasonal delivery. Identity became inventory.

Consumers didn’t abandon streetwear. They simply stopped believing in it.

The Post-Luxury Streetwear Shift

What we’re seeing now isn’t about trends it’s about posture.

Across the industry, there’s less emphasis on spectacle and more focus on substance. Designers are talking about durability, material honesty, and real-world wear again. Brands are moving away from abstract ideas of “global youth” and grounding themselves in something tangible: sport, workwear, music, geography, or lived experience.

Streetwear culture hasn’t disappeared. It’s just shed luxury as a costume.

Luxury still exists but it’s no longer the destination streetwear is chasing.

Streetwear Is Becoming Functional Again

The future of streetwear is being rebuilt around utility, not status.

That means:

• Clothing designed for everyday use, not just social media

• Timeless silhouettes instead of seasonal gimmicks

• Brands speaking to specific communities, not everyone at once

• Pricing rooted in value, not borrowed prestige

The next generation of successful streetwear brands won’t be defined by how expensive they are, but by how relevant they are to the people who actually wear them.

What This Means for Streetwear Marketing

For marketers, this shift is uncomfortable but necessary.

The old streetwear marketing playbook is losing power. Hype cycles, influencer saturation, and forced collaborations no longer guarantee credibility. Audiences are more literate, more skeptical, and far more patient than before. They can spot manufactured storytelling instantly.

The future of fashion marketing especially in streetwear will be less about creating culture and more about documenting it.

That means:

• Translating real intent instead of inventing narratives

• Using restraint as a brand strategy

• Building depth instead of chasing reach

• Accepting that scale isn’t mandatory for success

Less noise. More signal.

Why Quiet Streetwear Will Win

The most relevant streetwear brands moving forward won’t dominate runways or timelines. They’ll dominate wardrobes. They’ll live in studios, gyms, skateparks, workshops, and daily routines. They’ll be worn hard, not archived.

Streetwear’s original strength was proximity to people, to culture, to everyday life. Luxury introduced distance. That distance is now collapsing.

What replaces it is intimacy.

Streetwear’s Reset, Not Its Decline

This isn’t the end of streetwear. It’s a correction.

By letting go of luxury’s validation, streetwear regains autonomy its regional accents, contradictions, imperfections, and honesty. It becomes harder to mass-produce, but easier to believe in.

The future of streetwear won’t be defined by institutional approval or conglomerate backing. It will be shaped by brands that know exactly who they’re for and are comfortable with who they’re not.

Streetwear isn’t evolving into luxury anymore.
It’s evolving back into itself.

And that’s where its future actually gets interesting.

Paris Fashion Week has always functioned like a cultural seismograph. Not just registering what designers are showing, but revealing what the industry is feeling, often before it knows how to articulate it. After a week moving between brand spaces, runways, and conversations that mattered more than the clothes themselves, one thing felt clear to me as a marketer in the fashion and lifestyle space: the long love affair between luxury, streetwear, and sneakers is over.

Not dramatically. Not bitterly. It ended the way most real relationships do, through exhaustion.

At PUMA’s Suede House, I was struck by how assertive the brand felt. The Suede wasn’t presented as a nostalgia play or a hype resurrection. It stood confidently as a cultural object that has already proven its worth. As someone who works with brands, that confidence is telling. We’re exiting an era where relevance was manufactured weekly. Endurance is back on the balance sheet.

The J. Lal runway reinforced this feeling. What stood out wasn’t trend-chasing or exaggerated references to “the street,” but discipline, structure, repetition, and restraint. It felt less like fashion trying to be culture, and more like fashion returning to its own rules. That separation is important. Luxury is no longer interested in borrowing cool. It’s reasserting authorship.

Later, meeting Salehe Bembury, someone who exists at the intersection of design, performance, and lived experience, clarified the shift even further. Salehe doesn’t represent streetwear entering luxury. He represents practice entering design. His work resonates not because it signals culture, but because it’s grounded in function, movement, and real-world use. That distinction matters in 2026.

And then there was Gallery Dept, where I crossed paths with Roc Marciano. No cameras. No spectacle. Just context. Roc doesn’t perform luxury, and he doesn’t need to. His presence in that space was a reminder that cultural capital no longer asks for validation from fashion, it allows fashion to orbit it.

Why the Love Affair Is Over

For over a decade, luxury needed streetwear for relevance.
Streetwear needed luxury for elevation.
Sneakers became the universal translator between the two.

That triangle worked until it became transactional.

From a marketing standpoint, the model was over-leveraged. Logos replaced ideas. Collaborations replaced craft. Scarcity replaced storytelling. Consumers, especially those who shaped sneaker and street culture long before it was monetised, felt the dilution first.

The audience grew up.

Today, luxury doesn’t want noise. Streetwear doesn’t want permission. Sneakers don’t want to be luxury accessories anymore. Each category is returning to its core function and that’s why the romance had to end.

Sport Has Entered as the New Muse

What’s replaced that relationship is far more interesting: sport.
