I'd like to say "we seem trapped" but we're literally trapped in a never ending identity battleground between one that insists our future lies in the East (seeking legitimacy and Religious belonging) and another that tells us our worth depends on resembling the West (the quest for modernity too look cooler)

Each side mocks the other for following someone else's path while neither realizes they are searching for validation beyond Algeria itself and the both of them keep looking at Algeria from someone else's center instead of its own.

I don't entirely blame people for this because they were raised within identities shaped long before they had any say in them and they're more like "victims", having spent their lives absorbing narratives from people who had themselves been shaped by the historical forces that defined Algeria for them.

Algeria has spent more than a century being defined by other people's categories such as French colonial project that tried to erase it then by a postcolonial state that Arabized it in the name of religion repeating a much older pattern and nither of these projects cared to ask what Algeria actually was before deciding what it should be.

1. What Is Algerian-ism?

Algerian-ism is about owning our real identity ,It is about standing fully in who we actually are before conquest and colonization
Our foundation is Amazigh, native to this land

while the identities that came later were the result of centuries of political and cultural domination. They are things our ancestors survived not who they were and this isn't "relativism disguised as identity" It's a rejection of the myth that identity has to come from one pure, unchanging origin

And the whole idea of "identity must come from one pure, unchanging origin" is itself borrowed logic and it was never ours, it was the logic of conquest true ownership comes from recognizing what belongs to us and what was imposed on us.

2-arab lens is not the only lens

Algeria’s Arab identity comes with a whole mix of deep lore and blurring it all together is lowkey why everyone gets confused

Historical Context

It started with the Islamic conquests in the 7th–8th centuries, but the real plot twist happened in the 11th century when the Banu Hilal and Banu Sulaym tribes migrated into North Africa. Ibn Khaldun talked about their impact, and he literally compared them to a swarm of locusts.But modern historians like «Mohamed Talbi, Michael Brett, and Elizabeth Fentress» push back on his version of the loreInstead of one massive takeover they say it was more of a slow burn of migration and cultures mixing over time. Even at its strongest, Arabization was more about cultural blending than replacement, and Amazigh people never disappeared they remained the demographic foundation of the country through every layer that came after.

That gradual historical mixing is one thing. What happened after 1962 was something completely different

It was a :political decision

Arab identity wasn't just this fixed, pre-packaged fact the new state inherited and they lowkey canonized it by making it official law (Article 2 of the constitution declares Islam the state religion, and Article 3 declares Arabic the national and official language) unconditionally, since independence

And this political decision wasn't just a random decision out of nowhere!

During the War of Independence, the FLN needed allies, and Nasser’s Egypt was carrying them. Clinging to the Arab League and pushing Arab identity wasn't just “finding their roots” or an emotional return to an old identity it was a strategic move to lock down resources and speedrun building the new state

Even the phrase most often used to prove Algerians are Arab

 "شعب الجزائر مسلمٌ وإلى العروبة ينتسب"  

isn't scripture or constitutional text. It's a line of poetry, written by Abdelhamid Ben Badis in 1937, as a direct response to Ferhat Abbas, who had just published an essay denying that an Algerian nation existed at all and arguing for full assimilation into France.

Ben Badis's line wasn't about bloodlines it was meant to stop France from wiping out their identity.

He literally cites non-Arabs like Salman al-Farisi and Bilal al-Habashi, calling them «Arab by force and by deed »which tells you Arabism back then was about unity, not genetics

And look that gap between symbol and substance didn't just stay theoretical it had real world consequences

In the 70s and 80s, the state rushed the speedrun to Arabize schools and that's because French colonialism wasn't just about land it was about reshaping identity (Missionary campaigns and colonial laws targeted Islam and Arabic as part of a broader strategy to consolidate French rule) and to new leaders pushing Arabic and Islam back into public life felt like a matter of national survival but it didn't have enough qualified Arabic speaking teachers to do it properly so they imported thousands of instructors from Egypt, Iraq, and Syria, many shaped by Muslim Brotherhood and political-Islamist currents, to fill classrooms fast. Meanwhile, the actual economy and the high paying jobs stayed gatekept by the French speaking elite

This created a whole generation that was Arabized in school, unemployed right after, and watching a Francophone class hold all the power. That group locked out and became the exact target audience for a new political-religious wave

This tied Arabness (culture )so closely to Islam that people started treating them like they were the exact same thing And this somehow led to the the black decade

Black Decade

In the 1990s, competing visions of who got to define Algeria turned violently against one another. It's something almost everyone knows about, But few understand what really happened.

Algeria had its own unique form of Islam a balanced Maliki approach that merged over centuries with Sufi zawiyas, the same zawiyas that led the resistance against French colonialism and protected the Qur'an and the Arabic language in the countryside when France tried to erase the spirit of resistance

It was a living, deeply rooted, and resistant faith.

Starting in the late 1970s and through the 1980s, a different Salafi ideology began entering the country through three parallel channels

• Algerians who studied at conservative Hanbali religious universities in the Arab East returned home after 1980, bringing Ibn Taymiyyah's fatwa compendium back with them..

• the government actually invited this in (the president Chadli Bendjedid opened up religious space after taking power in 1979 and imported scholars from the Middle East).

• The teachings of Saudi scholars like Ibn Baz, Ibn Uthaymeen, and al-Albani spread inside Algeria through contact during the Hajj, and through the books and cassette tapes available at the time

It's what we now call Wahhabism.

In its earliest form, it was a purely religious debate ( basically arguing that things like visiting saints tombs or zawiya rituals were bidaa that needed fixing ) and that’s a totally normal conversation that scholars have been debating inside Islam for centuries. But over time, it grew from "let's fix a few practices" into a movement with an answer for everything « clothing, art, how men and women relate to each other, even how a country should be governed. Not reform anymore»

One of the people pulled into this current was a guy named Ali Belhadj. At first, he was just another guy with opinions about which religious practices were real and which ones were borrowed clutter. Nothing special. But the 1980s were falling apart economically, and people were losing trust in the state and the society was genuinely stuck, looking for a way out. Right at that moment, what became known as the Islamic Salvation Front (FIS)showed up with a full package deal that promised economic, political, and religious answers all in one.. but the state cancelled the 1991 election the FIS was about to win, and the country fell into a civil war that lasted ten years (1992–2002) and killed somewhere between 150,000 and 200,000 people.

That same guy we mentioned earlier ended up right at the top of the FIS, going head to head with the state alongside Abassi Madani. Fast forward a decade, and Algeria was counting its dead by the hundreds of thousands almost nobody realized it was happening until it was already too late.

There are other angles to this story but im trying to focus on our identity so I’m keeping everything else out of the frame as much as possible

And through all this, normal people didn't actually fit into either camp and neither side actually represented real Algerians the both were just fighting over who gets total control while the people paid the price just for refusing to pick a side or trying to live a normal life.

That was the battle over the Eastern pole of our identity that fought with laws, elections, and eventually weapons but the West's occupation of the land ended in 1962 but Its occupation of our heads never did.

3. Western centrality

The colonizers left in 1962, but their mindset is literally still rent free in our heads, the laws changed, but the conditioning stayed and nobody is even forcing us anymore No army needed we're out here self policing what counts as success, beauty, or progress based on Western validation, it's giving generational brainwash and people are just passing it down like it's normal thing

You see it literally everywhere

• beauty standards:

(misogyny and colonial brainwash are literally two sides of the same coin here) they hit with a double blow of Eurocentrism Light skin, straight hair, and European traits are pushed as the ultimate ideal for us especially women, while local heritage is dismissed as ancient or uncivilized,

and our music or dance are degraded as backward or pure “تبهديل”.

Misogynistic beauty standards force us to chase a Eurocentric baseline just to be seen as worthy

• consumption habits :where a foreign brand or European product becomes proof of status and automatically gives you clout, even if the quality is trash.

• And you see it in how we define success: a degree from a European uni, a corporate job at a foreign company, or a visa to a Western country is instantly treated as a “real flex”while doing the exact same thing locally is seen as mid or second-rate..

We've internalized brainrot so deeply, even when it comes to what we remember. You can ask anyone or any kid about foreign pop culture, and suddenly it's a competition everyone's out here flexing who knows more lore. But bring up our own history, and nobody cares.

And nothing makes me mad more than someone saying :"Why should I care or do anything for a country that gave me nothing?" as if a nation is supposed to serve you on a silver platter, completely ignoring that you're the one who's supposed to build it. That entitlement is exactly how our own history gets buried likd the Amazigh Spring, our real independence timeline, and the local women who led early resistance. We're taught to validate the West while erasing ourselves.

This piece isn't about shutting ourselves off it's about ripping out the whole idea that we need anyone's approval whether from the East or the West ,we don't need anyone else to tell us who we are.

This is a stop looking around for permission to exist kind of article.

It's time we stood firmly in our own identity real freedom from cultural and linguistic colonialism isn't about cutting ourselves off from the world; it's about knowing where our boundaries are we can stay open to the world without losing ourselves in it

It starts with ending the self imposed fog we've been living in. It's time to take pride in our roots, our dialects, our way of life and to actually learn our mother tongue or tongues not just to preserve them but to share and celebrate them with the rest of the world.

Our history matters.

Our dialects matter.

Our culture matters

Our mother languages matter we have to earn them

live them and share them with the world

Algerian identity is a MINDSET

It's something our ancestors fought to protect now it's up to us to make sure it does !!
