i’ve had almost 200 calls since joining NACHC on May 18, two and a half months ago. the same five hesitations come up almost every time. here’s what’s actually true about each one.

01. the market is too small

“community health centers aren’t really our focus.”

1,512 community health centers. 17,000+ locations. 52 million patients, that’s 1 in 7 americans. roughly $60 billion a year. it’s not a small market. it’s an underserved one, underserved by vendors, not by demand.

02. conferences never pay off

“we spent a fortune on a booth and got nothing.”

a cold booth in a loud hall rarely pays off, and that was never the point. the companies that win here show up more than once and get introduced before they ever walk in. warm beats a booth every time. that’s why you need to be at our four conferences, Community Health Conference & Expo (CHI), Policy & Issues Forum (P&I), Workforce Conference (formerly FOM/IT), and Partner Conference, not for the booth itself, but for the repetition and the introductions that happen around it.

03. we’ll break in on our own

“we have a strong sales team. we’ll just do it ourselves.”

maybe you will. but this market moves on trust and referral, not cold email. one health center’s yes is what brings the next one. the fastest way in isn’t a bigger send list, it’s a credible introduction, and that’s the one thing your team can’t manufacture from the outside.

04. it’s pay to play

“a logo on a page won’t do anything for us.”

you’re right, and i wouldn’t sell you a logo. the value is being put in front of the people who actually buy, by name, again and again, plus the warm introductions that follow. that’s access. access is not a listing.

05. we don’t qualify yet

“we don’t have health center clients yet, so it’s too early.”

you don’t need a full roster to start. there are real on-ramps, pilots and accelerator paths, to earn your first references. every partner i work with started at zero here. the ones who made it simply started.

none of these are really about money. they’re about not being shown a clear way in. that’s the whole job, showing good healthcare companies a real path to the people community health centers serve.

The best person on my call last month loved everything I said.

She also couldn’t buy a thing.

Halfway through, the quiet line came: “I don’t get to give the final approval on who we partner with.”

Marketing weighs in. The COO weighs in. Cost versus value gets argued in a room I’m not in.

Here is the lesson I keep relearning in a relationship-driven market: the person in front of you is rarely the whole decision. Your job is not to win the call. It is to map the room.

I have watched this cost real deals. One vendor already served hundreds of clients in my space and wanted more. Great fit, warm champion, easy call. Then that champion told me he couldn’t sign anything. The deal went quiet in a committee I never met.

Another time, a founder and I had a strong conversation, and a week later she handed me to a colleague and stepped out. If I had treated her as the buyer, I would have kept selling the wrong person while the actual decision moved down the hall.

Let's talk

A third: the person on the call was genuinely interested, but the real relationship with their company already sat with a different team member I hadn’t met. The warmth in front of me was real. It just wasn’t where the yes lived.

Here is why this matters for you. You can run a flawless call and still stall out. In markets built on trust and committees, the deal does not die because your pitch was weak. It dies in a room you were never invited to, because you sold the one enthusiastic person and assumed they could carry it.

What it looks like when you get this right versus wrong is night and day.

The seller who maps the room asks, early and plainly, “besides you, who else needs to be comfortable with this, and what would they need to see?” Then they build the case for those people, not just the person on the screen. They hand their champion the words and the proof to sell it internally when they are not in the room.

The seller who does not map the room delivers a beautiful pitch, gets a warm “this is great,” and then waits. And waits. They mistake a nod for a decision, and they never find out who actually had to sign off until the deal is already cold.

The common mistake is simple: we confuse enthusiasm with authority. The most excited person on the call feels like the buyer. Usually they are the coach, not the closer. That is good news, a coach can walk you into the room, but only if you ask them to.

So here is your move this week.

On your next three calls, before you hang up, ask one question: “Besides you, who else needs to be comfortable with this, and what would they need to see to say yes?” Then write the answer down. That short list is your real map. If the person cannot answer it, you have just learned the most important thing about the deal, that even your champion does not know how their own company buys.

An enthusiastic contact is a start, not a close.

Map the room before you map the deal.

Three weeks into my new role at National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) , I have had 57 calls.

Here is what I learned.

Volume reveals patterns that one-off conversations hide

On a call you get the unfiltered version. What someone is actually struggling with. What they tried that did not work. What their budget situation really looks like. What their CEO will and will not approve.

After 57 of those conversations in rapid succession, patterns emerge that you simply cannot see any other way.

The biggest one: most companies do not have a clear answer to the question “what problem do you solve for a community health center in one sentence?”

Not because their product is bad. Because they have been inside their own company for so long that what seems obvious to them is completely invisible to everyone else.

What the best companies had in common

I talked to founders building medication-adherence devices, AI scribes, maternal health equity platforms, receivables-financing tools, vision-care technology, patient-engagement software, behavioral health apps, and more.

The ones that stood out had three things in common.

They knew their patient. Not their user. Their patient. They could describe exactly who was being underserved and why, and they had usually lived close to that problem themselves.

A founder building a medication adherence device told me about a family member coming home from a heart attack with a bag full of prescriptions and nobody to explain them. That was why he built what he built. That kind of origin story does not come from a market research report. It comes from living close to the problem.

They had proof. Not a pitch deck slide that said validated. A real health center that had tried the product and could say what happened. CHCs talk to each other constantly. Word of mouth travels fast in a network of 1,512 health centers. One validated client is worth more than a hundred cold outreach emails.

They were honest about where they were. The founders who said “we have three clients and we are trying to get to twenty” moved faster in the conversation than the ones who oversold. CHC-facing organizations can smell overclaiming from a mile away.

What surprised me most

The calls I expected to be dead ends were often the most interesting.

A solo consultant with 30 years in the FQHC space offered two warm introductions before we finished the call. A trade association representing 600 medical device companies wants to route their members into our programs. A startup in Y Combinator is ready to invest $60,000 in three CHC pilots before they have a single health center client because they understand that is how you earn the right to scale here.

The pipeline is everywhere. The question is whether you are paying attention.

What I tell every founder who asks how to break into this market

CHCs serve 52 million patients. 1 in 7 Americans. They operate on negative two percent margins and they buy through trusted channels. Cold outreach almost never works.

What works is showing up with something real. A validated product. A clear ROI case. A genuine understanding of the population they serve. And the patience to build trust before you ask for a contract.

The companies that are winning in this space did not get there by selling harder. They got there by understanding better.

For the past few years, I volunteered with HIMSS Northern California Chapter, helping plan events, support speakers, and bring people together around healthcare innovation. It taught me a lot and introduced me to people who genuinely care about improving care in our region.

Attending the California Healthcare Innovation Conference this time had a different meaning for me. I was there in my new role with NACHC Select, representing community health centers and the partners who support them. It felt like a natural next step - like everything I’ve been learning and doing these last few years finally connected.

One of the highlights for me was getting a chance to meet Marc Mar-Yohana and Amith Viswanathan and take a photo together. Marc is the President of the HIMSS Northern California Chapter, and Amith serves as President‑Elect and a Board Member - and I’ve been seeing both of them at almost every HIMSS Northern California event over the past few years. I can tell you from experience: they genuinely care about this organization and the people they serve.

What Stood Out

Whole‑person care is becoming real. People are building programs around housing, food, behavioral health, and social support - not just talking about them.

Data sharing is improving. I saw real examples of clinics, counties, and community partners exchanging data in ways that actually help patients.

AI is becoming useful. Tools that reduce documentation, support interpretation, and help care teams work smarter are finally here.

Workforce support is the priority. Everyone agrees: if we don’t support the people doing the work, nothing else matters.

My Take: Why Wearables Matter

One thing I kept thinking about is how much wearable devices - like the Oura Ring, Garmin, Fitbit, Apple Watch - can help us move toward better care.

Not because they’re trendy. Because they give us real‑life data:

• Sleep

• Stress

• Movement

• Recovery

• Heart rate patterns

These things shape health more than most people realize.

I use these devices myself, and they’ve helped me understand my own habits and stress levels. It made me think about how powerful this could be for patients - especially those in CHCs who may not always have consistent access to care.

Wearables can help CHCs:

• Catch issues earlier

• Support chronic disease management

• Improve behavioral health insights

• Personalize care without adding workload

It’s simple: you can’t improve what you don’t measure.

This Memorial Day carries a weight I never imagined I would carry. Today is also my father’s 49th birthday, a day that should have been a celebration of his life. Instead, it has become a day of remembrance, reflection, and purpose.

I moved to the United States in 2022 to build a life with my wife, Suzie, after two years of long‑distance relationships. The timing happened to be just before the war began in Ukraine, and like many families, mine was deeply affected by it.

On April 20, 2025, Easter morning, I lost my father to the war in Ukraine. He was on a mission, heading toward a frontline position, when a drone dropped a bomb on him. His last words, passed on to me by the comrade who was with him, were simple and devastating: “They shot me.” That comrade was killed a few days later.

My father chose to serve. He was not drafted. When the full‑scale invasion began, he was in Poland and could have stayed there safely. Instead, he returned to Ukraine because, as he told me, “I go so that you don’t have to.” He served for nearly three years with courage, conviction, and love for his family. He believed there is no greater act of love than giving your life for others.

His body still has not been brought home, even a year later, and we do not know if it ever will be. Recently, I had the chance to be in Poland and speak with my uncle, who was with my father on that mission. The stories he shared will stay with me for the rest of my life. I have no choice but to be proud.

I believe the men and women who gave their lives have a special place in heaven because they lived by the example of our Savior and showed love through sacrifice.

Today, I honor that love. I honor the sacrifice he made so that others could live. I honor the values he lived by: courage, responsibility, and devotion to family.

To my father, who gave everything. To my uncle, who survived the same mission and is now recovering. To every soldier who fights not because they want war, but because they want peace - THANK YOU!

This Memorial Day, may we remember that freedom is never free. Real heroes are often overlooked by the systems they served, but never by the hearts they protected.

For the last 1,404 days, I’ve run 3 km every single day - enough distance to “reach” New York from Sacramento. Along the way, I would have passed Salt Lake City, Denver, Omaha, Chicago, and almost Boston. My next goal is even bigger: to “run” all the way from Sacramento, US to Lviv, Ukraine - 9,800 km. I’m 3,780 km in, with 6,020 km to go, finishing around summer 2031.

Just like that long road, some chapters become more than work. They become places where you grow, find your people, and build something that stays with you. For me, that was the last four years at inVerita.

When I joined, I was still figuring out my life in America. I didn’t expect this company to become the place that helped me take my first real steps here - from settling into a new country to building a career I’m proud of.

Along the way, I met people whose generosity shaped my story - from helping me get my first car to supporting my family during the war. And of course, the roadshows, long drives, late‑night strategy talks, and all the laughs that turned work into friendship.

I’m especially grateful to the people who stood closest through this journey - Orest Hudziy, whose generosity and mentorship changed more than just my career; Zoryan Hudziy, whose support and leadership encouraged my colleagues and me during our calls with the CEO; our Discovery Team - Igor Aliluiko, Larysa Z., Ivan Poddubchenko, Stas Lukiv, and Eugen Shestopalov - who consistently turned ideas into clarity; and our Account Manager, Victoria Khorolska, who took exceptional care of all my clients.

And I’m still buzzing.

Three days. 40,000+ people. Thousands of conversations about AI, interoperability, cybersecurity, and digital transformation in healthcare.

But here’s what I keep coming back to:

It’s not the keynotes. It’s not the exhibition floor. It’s the conversations that happen AFTER the sessions - over bad conference coffee, in hallway discussions, at 9 PM networking events.

It’s the “what if we tried this” moments that turn into multi-year partnerships.

That’s the real value of these events. The connections. The energy. The shared belief that healthcare can be better.

HIMSS delivered this year.

And honestly? I got to experience it in a way I didn’t expect.

After several intense days at HIMSS26 in Las Vegas, today marked my final day at the conference.

Like every HIMSS, this week was filled with conversations about AI in healthcare, interoperability, cybersecurity, and the future of digital health platforms. But beyond the technologies and sessions, what stood out the most were the people and relationships behind the innovation.

Morning: AI moving from hype to real deployment

Many of the discussions this year focused on a clear shift: AI is no longer just a concept being explored in healthcare. It is moving into real clinical workflows.

Across sessions and conversations, three themes appeared again and again:

• AI as a clinical and operational co-pilot

• Interoperability enabling real data liquidity

• Cybersecurity becoming a core healthcare capability

One insight that resonated with me was that successful AI adoption requires redesigning workflows, not simply adding a new tool. Technology alone will not solve problems without governance, quality data, and strong clinical alignment.

Conversations on the floor

A large part of my time was spent in meetings and conversations across the exhibit floor.

What I noticed this year is that buyers are asking more practical questions:

How will this integrate into our current systems?

How quickly will it create real value?

What measurable ROI will we see within 12–24 months?

This shift toward real outcomes rather than buzzwords is a very positive signal for the digital health ecosystem.

The power of relationships

For me personally, HIMSS is always about people.

This year I had the chance to reconnect with many professionals I had previously only known through LinkedIn and finally meet several of them in person.

One of the highlights was recording a podcast with Dr. Laura Purdy, MD, MBA , a client of ours at inVerita. Hearing her openly talk about the importance of trust in vendor relationships was incredibly meaningful.

In healthcare technology especially, organizations are looking for partners they can rely on without constant micromanagement.

That idea of trust and long-term collaboration came up again and again in conversations throughout the week.

What I’m taking home

After four days at HIMSS, a few ideas stand out:

• AI adoption will depend on strong governance and real workflow integration

• Interoperability and cybersecurity are foundational for digital health innovation

• The industry is moving toward measurable outcomes instead of hype

But most importantly:

Healthcare innovation still moves forward through relationships and trust.

Day 1 at HIMSS was special for me for many reasons.

One of the best parts of the day was reconnecting in person with several people I had previously only known through LinkedIn. It reminded me that real business is still built through real relationships. Online conversations are important, but meeting face to face brings a completely different level of connection, trust, and energy.

A major highlight for me was finally meeting Laura Purdy, MD, MBA in person. Laura is a client of ours at inVerita, and it was honestly one of the most meaningful moments of the day.

From our very first call, there was a strong match. Our discovery team immediately connected with her vision, and I still remember their excited faces after that first conversation. Recently, we officially started working together on her project, and during the podcast we recorded at HIMSS, I told Laura that the day we started that project was one of the greatest days of my life:)

What made the interview especially meaningful was hearing Laura speak so openly about her experience working with our team. She talked about how hard it is for founders to find a vendor they can actually trust, and how many companies overpromise and underdeliver. She shared that one of the things that stood out to her from the beginning was that our outreach felt personal, thoughtful, and real. Later, once we started working together, she saw that our team followed through consistently, stayed transparent, communicated clearly, and kept delivering exactly what was discussed.

She also spoke about something that matters deeply to me: trust.

In business development, my goal is never to pressure people. My goal is to build trust before any service is sold. I believe people want to work with teams they can rely on, teams they do not need to micromanage, and teams that care about the outcome as much as they do. Hearing Laura confirm that in front of the camera meant a lot to me because it reflects the kind of company Inverita is building.

I was also proud that the conversation highlighted the values behind our work. Laura described inVerita as a value-driven company, and that alignment is exactly why our partnership works. We are not just building software. We are building solutions with people who care deeply about what they do.

Another part of the interview that stayed with me was Laura’s willingness to be a real advocate for our team. She said clearly that she would be happy to refer us to others and share her experience. Now you know who to ask about how we perform 🙂

After the interview, I went to the HIMSS networking reception, where I continued meeting new people across healthcare, digital health, IT, and innovation. Some conversations were casual, some strategic, and some may become future opportunities. What stood out again and again was that people are looking for something real: trustworthy partners, practical solutions, and meaningful relationships.

That was my biggest takeaway from Day 1:

people still do business with people they trust.

HIMSS started with reconnections, a powerful in-person meeting with an amazing client, a meaningful interview, and new conversations at the evening reception. A very strong start, and I’m grateful for it.

These systems:

• Capture the patient visit in real time

• Structure notes automatically

• Reduce documentation burden

• Allow clinicians to focus on the patient instead of the keyboard

What is becoming even more interesting is the next layer.

AI is not just transcribing. It is analyzing those conversations and generating feedback. It can highlight gaps, suggest follow-ups, flag potential risk factors, and surface relevant context. The physician remains in control, but the AI becomes an assistant that augments judgment.

This is not replacement. This is cognitive support.

3. AI-Enabled Hospital Rooms Are Drawing Crowds

Live demos of AI-assisted patient rooms are moving beyond concept slides. The focus is on workflow optimization, documentation support, and patient monitoring in real time.

4. Rural Health Is Gaining Momentum

Federal initiatives are accelerating discussions around scalable infrastructure for rural systems. The opportunity is massive, but execution remains complex.

5. EHR Integration Is Still the Bottleneck

AI is exciting. Integration is hard. Every serious founder here is eventually pulled into the same conversation: interoperability.

6. The Workforce Question Dominates Every Panel

Nurses made their position clear: AI cannot replace them.

It’s my 4th Thanksgiving in the USA, and there are so many things to be grateful for every single day. I’m thankful for my beautiful wife Suzanna Kovalchuk who supports me through everything, my amazing clients who motivate me with their commitment, and my hardworking colleagues who bring passion to every project.

Every year, I keep a personal tradition of making the Thanksgiving turkey myself. I learned the recipe from Gordon Ramsay, and it quickly became something I look forward to. And thanks to Dave Ramsey lessons on saving and managing money wisely, I can plan ahead and buy as many turkeys as I want without stress. It’s a fun reminder that good habits, whether financial, personal, or health-related, really do add up.

Thanksgiving can get busy, but even a short 15–20 minute run or walk in the morning can reset your energy and mindset. A quick warm-up, a few run-walk intervals, and a light stretch is all you need to feel ready for the day. Speaking of habits, this year I completed my 1,176-day “3 km Every Day Forrest Gump Challenge.”🍾 And honestly, your support helped keep me going. Thank you.

What a week it has been. From October 19–22 2025, at the heart of Las Vegas, the HLTH USA conference brought together over 12,000 healthcare innovators, executives, investors, payers, providers, and tech disruptors under one roof.

This gathering reminded me that to truly fly with the eagles, you must elevate your environment, your network, and your mindset - and this event did just that.

The Big Picture

HLTH USA 2025 was more than a conference - it was a launchpad for meaningful partnerships and innovation across the healthcare ecosystem. With 400+ speakers, 900+ exhibitors, curated 1:1 matchmaking, and deep focus on AI, digital health, biotech, and value-based care, this year’s edition positioned itself as the place where the biggest moves get made.

For me personally, it underscored how critical it is to surround yourself with the right people - those who are building, scaling, investing, disrupting - and how essential it is to bring your own unique value to the table.

My Highlights

Art & Inspiration

One of the most memorable moments for me wasn’t a panel or a pitch - it was a conversation in an art gallery with a fellow attendee, where we dug into the deeper meaning of art, and reflected on how great painters truly work to craft something extraordinary. It was humbling to witness, and it reminded me that the same dedication, the same craftsmanship and patience that go into art also go into building meaningful companies and platforms.

Running with the Community

Early one morning I laced up my shoes and went for a run with a few fellow HLTH participants. Sometimes those less-formal moments breed the strongest connections.

After‐Party Vibes

And yes - there was an amazing after-party. A chance to unwind, celebrate the week’s wins, make new friends, and reflect on serendipitous meetings. It’s this kind of environment - the one where business meets camaraderie - that really underscores the value of gathering in person.

What’s Next?

The question now is: “What’s next?” How do we take the momentum of HLTH and convert it into tangible business outcomes, partnerships, product launches, fundraising, go-to-market acceleration?

As someone who has now attended HLTH and VIVE seven times, I’d love to share a few personal tips on how to make the post-conference period truly count:

• Follow up immediately with the people you met - the 1:1 meetings, casual chats, gallery conversations. Turn warm handshakes into real collaboration.

• Leverage the network you built during the run and at the party: informal connections often lead to formal deals.

• Plan for HLTH 2026, but don’t wait - use these next few months as a sprint zone: product iteration, investor outreach, business model refinement, partnership formation.
