For the past few months, throughout the summer, a small group has been gathering at Heart Marrow Counseling to practice a form called Authentic Movement.

Authentic Movement is a contemplative movement practice first envisioned in the 1950s by Mary Starks Whitehouse, who was both a modern dancer and a dance movement therapist. It was later coined and developed by her students Janet Adler and Joan Chodorow.

I have been practicing and facilitating Authentic Movement throughout my adult life, and regularly since 2015.

It is a form that entails, in its simplest form, one mover and one witness.

The MOVER:

• The mover closes their eyes—or practices a soft focus if closing them feels too vulnerable—and moves for a predetermined amount of time.

• The mover’s only jobs are to move and notice. Maybe 70% movement and 30% witnessing what is happening.

• The mover lets the movement and breath move them, however small or big, slow or fast. There is no right or wrong.

• The mover practices noticing what is happening. What movement is coming? What emotions? What stories? What sensations?

The WITNESS:

• The job of the witness—or what I sometimes call the with-ness—is to hold the container for the mover.

• The witness practices unconditional positive regard for the movements, breath, and sound of the mover. This is, in-and-of-itself, a healing act.

• The witness also does their best to make sure the mover stays safe, since the mover’s eyes are most likely closed.

The PROCESS:

• After the mover moves with the witness witnessing, the mover spends a pre-determined amount of time sharing what happened. In the sessions at Heart Marrow, movers have been practicing staying in the reverie of the movement, speaking as though we are still moving.

• Then the witness relays either what they heard the mover say, or sometimes what they saw, felt, or imagined.

• Then we switch. The mover becomes the witness. The witness becomes the mover. And the process starts again.

• After both people have had a turn in both roles, we gather together as a whole group and talk about what came up, areas of interest, and themes related to the group as a whole.

Authentic Movement can be a deep process. It is for those who are ready to step out of purely mental and intellectual modes of understanding, and allow the body/ies to speak. Oftentimes, what the body has to say surprises, affirms, deepens, softens, and calls forth new ways of seeing oneself and the world.

For this second eclipse of this summer, we find ourselves in the month of Virgo, and in the process of releasing old ways of thinking, especially in terms of the separation of the mind from the body. This full moon eclipse in Virgo, with Mercury—the ruler of Virgo—in a cazimi at the heart of the Sun, and Uranus in Gemini—the other sign that Mercury rules—square to the eclipse, we can expect moments of liberation, surprise, and epiphany in terms of the re-embedding of our minds in our bodies.

In the Body. In the bodies. Within and between bodies.

This can mean that we feel how the split that has been enacted on us—from us—is no longer useful to us—for us, with us. Finally, we see, feel, hear, and sense, that we are whole and that wholes cannot be split. We can practice inclusivity of all of our parts—mind, body, spirit, skin, wind, earth, fire, rainbow. When we do this, systems restore.

This is the final eclipse in Pisces for another 18 or so years. Feel back to September or 2025 and 2024. Look back through pictures. Make sense of it.

In fact, when I looked back at my newsletters from these times, one is named Death to the Old Way of Thinking... surprise!

So here we are again, as astrology is a set of cycles. As our time here on earth in these body-minds is a set of cycles. As we cycle.

The other one, from 2024, is called To the Bottom of the Cave. I encourage you to revisit both of these newsletters as well as this one, for the astrological insight and the poetry.

I love this message about eclipses that came through in one of those newsletters:

When Luna becomes covered by Gaia this time around, we are ending a cycle, and we are finding some sense of personal liberation through re-embedding our minds in our bodies. The Moon is in mutable water, Pisces. Yet the Sun, shining back toward the Moon, interrupted by the Earth body, is with Mercury, asking us to step back into the body, and for the three—Sol, Gaia, Luna—to align for greater understanding of what needs to be shed.

Shedding the idea that our minds tell our bodies what to do. Really this is more of a collaboration. Our minds are not in control. Our bodies are wild.

If we are out of touch with our bodies, and the emotions that are embedded there, and the energetic body that surrounds it all, we cannot access our minds in a holistic way. Instead we twist and turn our minds, manipulating others and ourselves.

When we pay attention to these beautiful, diverse, sensitive, and intelligent body-minds, we can be better in touch with ourselves and others.

Mercury here at the heart of the Virgo Sun asks us to be in service to our bodies, our collective health, and mentorship of, with, and through more-than-human kin such as wild flowers, grasses, stones, wind, and sun. Sense. Hear. Feel.

The square from Uranus in Gemini provides a multitude of ways this might play out. And perhaps we don’t really get it right now, but there is just a feeling of WHOOSH! Something enters our body-minds that is ultimately a shift in understanding.

This eclipse has the North Node in Pisces, so let’s take time to soak up the goodness of love that is unconditional and immeasurable. Let’s soak up what it means to be together and to be loving and kind and generous. The North Node is a place of growth. We can feel all of the wisdom of Pisces’ luxurious spaciousness.

The nervous system is profoundly at play here, so this eclipse will probably feel emotional, uncomfortable, and activating for a lot of us. This may feel challenging, emotional, and too diffuse for some of us, and in this case, lean on the lessons from Virgo—discernment, self-care, and rhythm.

We do not need to take on things that are too much, and we each get to gauge what that means for our own bodyminds.

If it is available, spend some time in nature. Allow nature to regulate your system during this eclipse. Get yourself somewhere calming, even if it is “just” the neighborhood park.

To me, this Solar Eclipse in Leo seems clean—sparkles on a crystal-clear mountain stream. There is a quality of aliveness to it, an aspect of grace and awareness.

The kite formation, with Venus in Libra at its focal point, Uranus and Pluto in a grand air trine, and Neptune in sextile to both, is fortifying. It carries a transformative capacity to connect, harmonize, and relate with balance and empathy to the surprise of this moment. Even amid these confusing times, this air trine feels like a moment of calm attention, pointing us toward relational awareness and resolve.

Leo is fixed fire, and this is a South Node eclipse. The South Node asks us what we are ready to release. Perhaps this is a moment to let go of our fixed ideas about how life should be, or about how we should be, making space for what might become.

Do we have the courage to be whole, a singular strawberry in the crowd of leaves and diverse ripening? To revolve into someone new? To know ourselves and our needs? To reveal only what feels right in this moment—and the next?

Leo is about expression, and this eclipse may illuminate what we actually need in terms of what we express, how we express it, and to whom.

Leo is connected to the Queen of Wands, a card that asks us to be in our unique magic. This is a seat of personal power. Not power over, but power within the pride.

In the Overculture, there are many implicit, not-so-subtle messages about what is appropriate, good, or worthy of expressing. Yet here, as the Moon covers the Sun, our needs eclipse the expectations of the ego. Feeling moves ahead of the need for acceptance.

When everything is changing and moving quickly, and we no longer know where we stand, how do we use discernment to choose what we truly want instead of repeating old patterns that keep us exposed when our deeper instinct is to veil ourselves for a while?

How do you express yourself?

Does your expression feel true and comfortable, or overly exposed—crashy, crunchy, and worn thin?

While we are musing over this, let’s not forget about Cancerian medicine. We just went through a huge Cancerian moment with Mercury in Retrograde, and just because we are in the Sun now does not mean we need to forget about the Moon or the magic of our Cancerian Shell-ter.

How we express ourselves—and the courage to do so—is intertwined with how we are seen by others. And we still have a choice about whose company we keep. Perhaps this Solar Eclipse in Leo reveals who you want beside you.

Eclipses reverberate far beyond the coming month, often unfolding over the next six months. If it feels good, keep a few notes. Then, when the Moon is full in Leo on January 22, look back and notice what has unfolded around these themes.

I am of the opinion that eclipses do not need a whole lot of ceremony. They are such powerful moments that our biggest task is to simply listen to what is coming through.

This Full Moon in Aquarius is inviting some curiosity about the unique feeling of ripeness, satiety, and the practice of authentic knowing.

When have we had enough?

What do we do when we reach that point?

With each passing moment, we are alive to something new. This is queering. This is the brilliance of Aquarian energy—being able to glean the in between spaces of knowledge, life, and the balance between structure and surprise.

I think of Aquarius as snakelike—combing the earth, engaging in the cyclical quality of Saturn; shedding the skin to begin anew in the surprising and unexpected qualities of Uranus. The snake is wise and sometimes alone or even lonely, much like Aquarius. Yet the snake yearns for company and companionship, warmth and co-regulation, a perfect metaphor for this full moon.

And expression, my friends… expression!

The Sun side of the full moon is in Leo, conjunct Jupiter, the planet of expansion, generosity, excess, and faith—asking us to hold our hope and move forward into the glow. Asking us to show up, for real, while the moon sits inside of the Aquarian project of community, innovation, and delphinium dreams of a green future. Conjunct Pluto, we see deep community empowerment, the transformative effort of destruction, and the regenerative compost of death and dying.

Ssssssssssss…

These two, in fire and air, feed each other fuel for a beautiful flame. There is a sense of forward momentum here, and we can jump on the magic carpet ride, if we want to.

All of this is square to Chiron in Taurus, and so we are called to be and receive and enact the teaching of the body. It is not easeful or simple. But it is worthy. Chiron in Taurus wants us to feel the inevitable changes to the body/ies. What is this body? What are we called to teach and learn about this Body?

This full moon is about the practice of asking for community support when we need it. When/if we feel truly disembodied, trusted and beloved community calls us home.

Trusted community is not only humankind. Trusted community can be the trees, the waters, nature in any form—reliable, available, and constant.

As we mind our satiability, our ability to be satiated by life, we slow down to the processes of interaction, co-creation, and technologies that actually serve us. Full Moons are times of release, and we can release the skin that no longer serves. We can re-cognize when we are full, when we need to shift, and what new skin is alive right now, right here.

Will the wind carry my bones down a cold dark river? 
Will I wake up one day in the form of a serpentine stone?
Will the sounds of breathing become more than one poem?

As the New Moon in Cancer approaches, Nicole Feola and I have been busy creating something sweet, tender, and meaningful for you to experience during our collaborative, experiential New Moon ritual. Nicole and I have also collaborated on this newsletter. This newsletter is for you as a general community, and will also be a touchpoint for those who register for the New Moon experiential. New Moon Cancer REGISTRATION

Cancer’s New Moon is a time to receive and enact support, to feel the home around us, to be in the shell and to call for container. It is a time to feel the changing nature of our wholeness. It is a time to come back to the hearth, and celebrate all of the unseen labor it takes to nurture both the self, and the community as a whole.

Something essential happens in the shell, near the hearth. What is gestating?

And which kind of Crab are you?

Are you the hermit crab, one who leaves the shell when it becomes uncomfortable or restrictive? The one who goes to look for a larger, more responsive shell?

Or are you a crab who quietly secretes a tender shell, hidden beneath the old one? A new shell that expands and hardens into a better-fit, when given space?

Either way, change is a constant tide.

This New Moon, we can invite in a growing awareness and appreciation of how we already are, and how we can still, accessibly and instinctually tend to inner and outer cycles, in the humble ways that make both personal and communal Life possible.

Within Cancerian energy, we can choose to view our own unseen, unacknowledged labor as a strategy for self-empowerment, and silence as an action. We can simply shed the shell in our own space and time, without announcing it, or needing to be seen in that process.

There is also a strategy within this new moon of cutting. What needs to be cut out, in order to make the new shell? Perhaps it is simply the words as stated above. Or maybe it is something bigger, a physical or emotional appendage that has grown from years of patterning around nurturance.

The molting process offers one way of imagining this movement. Not as a prescription for how change should happen, but as a living metaphor that the Cancer New Moon invites us to contemplate.

The too-tight fit: Our shell is beginning to constrict, prompting the pre-molt.

The pre-molt: space is being created between our inner body and the outer shell through enzymatic digestion.

The molt: Inner pressure pushes against the outer shell, popping it open like a lid so the inner body can pull itself out of the old structure.

The soft-shell: the crab, now extra-vulnerable and extra-tasty to predators, must find a temporary shelter as the new one calcifies with the minerals of the surrounding sea.

It is both true that our cycles follow a sequential order or arc that we can recognize — and also we can experience ourselves going back and forth in that sequence.

Consider also that much of the work may already be complete. Much enzymatic digestion may have already been long underway, dissolving and “cutting” attachments that once held one’s soft inner body close to a protective outer structure, now outgrown. With Vesta in Aries square this new moon, the current astrology reflects the paradox of accessing stillness in motion, and action through stillness. When we make space for stillness, we are also containing the mental impatience and body’s restlessness that arises – and this may be the pressure that pushes up against the old shell, cracking it open, enabling the beginning of a new cycle. It feels helpful to expect that, with a wild emergence of a soft-shell body, there will be a rush of heightened exposure and a genuine need for other forms of shelter, safety and care from our relationships – human or otherwise – while the new shell hardens. But also, with that sense of vulnerability there’s also a deep breath of relief and of wide-open possibility.

Summertime is a time of receiving (Cancer), expressing (Leo), and releasing (Virgo). Notice this new moon what you are receiving. What is essential to the dissolving and building of this new shell? What chariot will you now lead? What will carry you into the future, from and within the past? What do the tides bring in that is essential nourishment for this new shell?

When things get too big or chaotic, we need a central image to gather around the self. This is the shell. This is Cancerian nurturance.

And perhaps this is also where the metaphor asks something more of us. Even as we recognize the stages of molting, Cancer reminds us that our lived experience of growth is rarely so orderly.

This moment in our astrology may be facilitating a pivot, a turning from the pre-molt to molting stage in this sequence. This New Moon follows close on the heels of Neptune station, bringing forward themes of surrender and release.

And it is also true that these stages are not sequential. We may experience a molting, and then seem to go backward, finding ourselves inside the ‘pre-molt’, the too-tight fit. Under that pressure again.

The non-linearity of it, the forward and backward motion of our growth and maturity that Cancer reveals and teaches, can be disheartening in the parts of us oriented to ever-forward progress.

It can be disheartening to the Aries place in us that goes head-first. The existence of Fire creates the experience of linear time, a Before and an After, as it burns.

Both are subjective states — the feeling of Time continuously passing. Moments passing through us, as we metabolize our life experiences. Us passing through the guts of Time. The ongoing stream of the Now becoming the Past. The Future becoming the Now.

My question for you is:

Instead of this pre-molt stage being just a way-station from Here to There — to our maybe longed-for destination of freedom from old shells and clear steps forward into fresh beginnings –

What can only be learned, known, perceived, fostered and nourished through being-inside-of the pre-molt stage? Through the vulnerable soft-shell stage?

How can we value and bring Presence to each stage as we find ourselves in it?

What perspective does each point in the wave offer, that is essential to the embodiment of Love? That lets you empathize and re-join with others and yourself, after moments of disconnect? That facilitates attunement after mis-attunement? That empowers you to intuitively, instinctively, bravely repair in a way that meets the moment, rather than going through the motions of a repair protocol?

Each developmental stage exists not as a temporal reality to make it to the other side of, to reach some ‘more-evolved’ stage — but as a subjective experience that the Present moment can always drop us into, through these cycles within cycles within cycles, Love spiraling deeper into embodiment.

Astrologer Rhea Wolf calls the Full Moon in Capricorn a time of reckoning. Indeed, this time of year is a logical time of reckoning if we see it from a year-long perspective. We are at the halfway point in our year. We are in a full moon time at the summer solstice. The light is bright, and we are full of what has happened so far in our year. It is a great time to look back.

Etymologically, to reckon means to order or to put or move in a straight line, and this brings to light Capricorn’s relationship to Saturn, Father Time.

During this big time of the Fire Horse and the year of the Wheel of Fortune, how do we remain grounded? How have you remained grounded (or not?) this past six months—during the hurricanes, the fires, and the floods, both literal and metaphorical. It has been no easy task for me.

This particular Full Moon in Capricorn, happening on June 29 @ 4:57 PM, is a doozy. For one, the full moon is sandwiched right in between Mercury stationing retrograde in the morning, and Jupiter’s ingress into Leo in the evening.

Mercury stations retrograde at 26 degrees of Cancer, and travels back to 16 degrees, where it was on June 12, the weekend of that weird Gemini New Moon. Because of the coinciding Mercury retrograde, I think this full moon is asking for some major reflection, both of our travels since June 12, and since January 18, when the moon was new in Capricorn.

Mercury retrograde is about reviewing, reworking, remaining. This is a deepening process. It takes time.

Enter Saturn, Capricorn’s ruler, sometimes named Father Time. Saturn is also called Kronos/Chronos. Chronos represents cyclical time. He carries a scythe for harvest. Time (Chronos/Saturn) was born from Uranus and Gaia, the god of the heavens and the goddess of the earth. Time is a relationship between the spirit and the flesh.

Saturn’s grandson, Kairos/Caerus, is the representative of perfect timing. Kairos time is presence and knowing. Kairos time is the stretching of time.

Kairos time is balance and perception. Chronos time is the ticking clock.

Saturnalia was a festival held in honor of Saturn, where roles were reversed in order to balance out power. This full moon, let’s enact a bit of Saturnalia with these two gods of time—Chronos and Kairos.

Can we enact the stretching of time with our presence?

Inside of this Mercury retrograde, can we review what is important to us in the midst of what is changing?

Can we enact some intentional role-switching to help us gain perspective, care, and presence?

This is not easy, but it can be transformational. The way we practice experiencing time impacts our lives deeply.

The Tarot card associated with Capricorn is the Devil. The Devil is associated with shame, guilt, and the shadow self. When I asked the Devil what they wanted to share about this full moon, they answered with the Karma card, reversed.

Known in most decks as Justice, Karma is all about finding a place of balance and harmony through justice, fairness, and, some say, neutrality. Judges are tasked with being neutral, after all.

But right now, Justice, or Karma, is reversed.

The other big shift—Jupiter’s move into the sign of Leo—marks a significant shift in the ways we expand, understand, and stand up for justice and what is right. Jupiter has been moving through Cancer for about a year, and now it moves into the fixed fire sign of Leo.

Jupiter in Leo asks us to move to the front, to be seen in whatever we do, and to do so brazenly and with courage. With all that is happening in our world, we are needed. Our magic, insight, collaboration, kindness, courage, and hope are needed in this time of confusion and bizarreness.

Mars and Uranus, conjunct, are also squaring the nodes of the moon. We are at a crossroads. We are at a place of karmic choice, as the Karma card suggests.

What will we choose?

It is time to reckon with the possibilities and to take steady and earth-oriented steps toward what we know is right. Time to face the shadow. A moment to stretch time.

A last thing about Capricorn’s signature energy.

Capricorn has a forgotten tail.

Capricorn used to be the Sea Goat and in recent times has turned into a goat. Capricorn is associated with Enki and the Abzu in ancient Sumerian mythology. Enki is the sea-fish, and his homeland is the primordial waters that surround the universe.

If Capricorn does not get to bend time by being in the waters, they lose their magic. We have lost their magic, their ability to be in contact with Kairos, related to Kairos and the subtle, magical time.

This Capricorn Full Moon, make time for magic. Make time to be in the waters, which will stretch time in different ways. Make time to reckon with the possibilities and the space that Mercury retrograde has to offer us.

The times they are a changin’.

We can rely on symbolic & spiritual creative practices like astrology to help us navigate and orient.

The new moon in Gemini offers a moment of curiosity within a larger framework of emerging curiosity and multiplicity. This moon wants to know what truths have been cast out. It wants to know how to find them. This moon wants to discover what freedoms we are yearning for, both collectively and personally. Opposite to Black Moon Lilith in Sagittarius, this moon asks the question:

Gemini’s New Moon is set on knowing that there are multiple truths, innumerable points of view, and yet, she wants to be clear on her own truth, her own point of view. She wants to develop her own philosophy. This is hard to come by right now, with so many untruths parading as truth, with so many lies being masqueraded as candor.

It is cattywampus to say the least, and I know we are all feeling it.

With Venus in Cancer squaring Chiron in Aries at the anaretic degree, this new moon also wants to belong, but there might not be a feeling of belonging. Chiron lingers in Aries for this new moon, but Venus has moved on, to the shining light of Leo, where she basks in vulnerability, strength, and persona. She has chosen herself. Can we chose ourselves too?

In the three days following the exact new moon, Venus goes on to sextile Uranus, trine Neptune, and oppose Pluto. She is asking a lot of questions of the collective:

Can I be seen even if my nervous system is activated?

Can I reveal my personal dream?

Can I be transformed by challenging moments?

Chiron enters Taurus this week, offering some grounding, embodiment, and slowness to the charged atmosphere.

Yet Uranus—newly in Gemini—also squares the nodes of the moon, rippling nervous system shockwaves through the energetic field. We will gain understanding of some sort this week. It is a big move. Our circle for Gemini’s New Moon will include a Tarot reading with the Lovers, who are associated with Gemini, and the Magician, who is associated with Mercury— Gemini’s ruler. I am including some pictures of these archetypes from one of my decks, a new one from the lovely Lindsay Mack, and illustrated by Chelsea Granger.

In our circle, we will be asking questions of these two regarding the movement or Uranus—planet of upheaval, epiphany, and change—from Taurus’ slow, earthy energy into Gemini’s mercurial, relational energy.

GEMINI SEASON NEW MOON CIRCLE

The energy leading up to this weekends’s Full Moon is intensely expansive. With a Mars square Pluto at the beginning of the week, and a Venus square Saturn at the end, this weekend’s bright fullness is a bit daring and glaring.

Uranus is sitting with the Sun in this configuration, freshly anointed in Gemini’s speakeasies, and square to the nodes of the Moon— points of karmic tension and release.

Full Moons are times of ultimate exposure, and with Sagittarius’ brazen and powerfully expansive fires, this one is bounding for a sense of freedom-at-all-costs. Towards the most emblazoned expression of righteousness.

Sagittarius is on a quest for meaning, so let’s be cognizant this Full Moon of our own biases around our meaning-making. With the North Node in Pisces squaring this Full Moon, there is a chance for a leap forward in our consciousness, moving us ever-more-gracefully into the flame of inclusivity. Let us act from our own landscapes of faith, with an openness to being shook, shaken, stirred, and a-quakened by the diversity of expressions around us. Take joy in others. Express your love and appreciation.

The Full Moon is also trine to Vesta, Pallas Athena, and Saturn, all in feisty Aries—ruled by Mars in Taurus. We are assisted in our endeavors of faith by structure, strategy, and devotion. We can make quick decisions, but our growth is slow. Things may happen suddenly, but integration takes time.

Every New and Full Moon is a MOMENT. Take the time you need to understand what happened afterwards. It is a time to be impacted, surely, and when we take our time healing—as is indicated by both Mars in Taurus and Venus in Cancer, flanking the Sun and Moon in semisextile and quincunx—we know ourselves better. And when we know ourselves better, with compassion and steady movement, we get better at being human.

This is not an easy Full Moon, especially with the days leading up to it. It may feel abrupt & disorienting—along with the awakening, expansion, and fiery flagrance. Get in touch with your higher self, the one that knows what to do and when to do it. If there is a party that you really wanted to attend and in the end you want to curl up with a friend or a dog instead, do it. Tend to the spaces and places that are asking for expansion, not the ones the over-culture insists on.

Temperance in the Tarot is associated with Sagittarius. The fullness of Temperance is to know the middle way; to be able to walk the center line; to embody all of ourselves, true wisdom.

When I asked Temperance what it wants us to know this Full Moon, it offered the Knight of Wands. In order to create balance and to know yourself better, do what brings you pleasure. Move with this Full Moon in a way that is right for your own expansion. Bring joy and expansion through your personal expression and willingness to play, be bold, and spontaneous.

NATAL CHART READING

In the last half of April, my sister N1a and I did something big. We opened Heart Marrow Counseling in SE Portland. For me, this was somewhat unexpected. Opening a space was not something I planned to do this year. Yet, when my sister suggested that we do this together, my interest was piqued. She has been a practicing licensed therapist for fifteen years, and has spent a lot of time subletting other peoples’ spaces, so she was ready to create a space of her own… and maybe I was more ready than I thought as well.

We looked at a few spaces which didn’t feel right. And then we found a little spot on Powell and 66th—not the location I would have imagined. N1a texted me to tell me that she had looked at the space and that the energy felt clear and calm above the Kha Moo Thai Restaurant…

So we put in a bid for a lease, and we got it.

Both N1a and I have pretty full schedules. She is a full time therapist and I have my practice as an astrologer, somatic practitioner, and expressive arts counselor, as well as being in graduate school and being a mom to two teens. She had to be out of her other offices by May 1st, so when we got the keys on April 15, we knew it was go-time.

For the last two weekends of April, we pushed HARD. We worked from early in the morning until 6 at night. We made plans with vendors and sellers all over the metro area. We met many different kinds of people.

We have both remarked that plans really FELL into place. We found just the right things to enliven our own spaces, the waiting room, the group room, and the middle office, and even though we worked hard, it felt like the energy was working with us.

Many of you know that I built and ran a neighborhood preschool from 2010-2020. The preschool and eventually toddler house as well, were deeply moved and influenced by the philosophies of the early childhood schools of Reggio Emilia, Italy. Within this philosophy, the learning environment is considered the third teacher, after the main caregivers and the teacher.

As we were developing Heart Marrow Counseling, we felt the environment of the space—the building, the community, the artists and healers from whom we inherited furniture, plants and art, the flowers and trees from around the neighborhood, the walls, the floor, the windows, Mt Tabor, the trees outside—moving us in such a profound way, and I felt the continuation of my life’s path.

Since we opened our doors to clients on May 1, we have received so much loving feedback from clients, colleagues, and friends. The best was a few days ago when one of N1a’s clients said:

I wonder why she feels this way…

Is it the flowers welcoming us from outside the front door?

Is it the original artwork that greets us when we enter the interior waiting room?

Is it the altar that sits next to the tea station?

Is it the rocks and gems and crystals that fill the space?

Is it the warm and inviting group space full of soft and colorful materials to sit on and touch?

Is it us?

It is the beautiful, well-loved plants that we gathered from households across Portland?

Is it the huge amount of history and healing that N1a and I have ignited in our family’s lines?

Is it our accumulative experience in the arts, healing, symbolic language, and meaning-making?

Is it the acknowledgement of conflict between us as a natural part of life?

Is it the acceptance that we hold polarities between us?

Is it the monumental collaboration we are enacting with more-than-human kin?

Is it the underlying philosophy of finding antidotes to white-supremacist culture?

Or is it the community of care we are inside of?

These are questions that will continue to be with me as we move forward into this new adventure. We just signed a lease with our first two subletters, and we are looking for a few more. Welcome to Ferdinand’s New Moon in Taurus. If you missed the Taurus Monthly Marrow, you can access that HERE, and you will then know about Ferdinand. I won’t go too much into it here, but suffice it to say that this new moon might be about embodying the peace and patience we want to see in the world.

While there is an “uh oh!” in the desensitization we are all facing, feeling, and enacting in terms of the bombardment of violation and violence being served to us right now, it occurs to me that there is also a gift. For the bulk of my life, I have lived under the assumption that people are basically good. Right now, I am not so sure. The gift of this is that it makes it crystal clear that I need to choose for myself the path I want to take, and the r/evolution I want to live.

Our lives are a dance between our fate (natal chart) and our free will (progressions and transits and the choices we make therein). So chooses Ferdinand, when being faced with a matador in a bull-fighting ring.

This New Moon in Taurus asks us to mother the earth and our song, to mother so hard that we go underground to bring back Spring. To mother so fiercely that we put down indestructible roots of love and compassion and harmony. To mother so well that our rage turns into stardust, and that stardust turns into the copper stepping stones we will follow to the center of the labyrinth.

We are being asked to actively embody our wounds and be courageous enough to feel them, in service of peace. We have the right to exist as whole and complex people. We have the right to be here in these bodies at this time. So much of the pain of the world is in denial of this reality. Step into the body, step into life. Get real. Spend even just a moment saying “Yep. This is who I am.”

These enactments are what need to happen in order for the mind to change, for us to be able to surprise ourselves. Let’s root down into self-love and trust of our individual and collective process. It has been too long of the oppressor telling us what parts of ourselves we are not allowed to be.

I am offering an embodied processing group in person. It did not fill up enough to start in May, but I am dedicated to this group. It was slated to be on Friday mornings. I am opening up summer enrollment for my Therapeutic Journeys, June-Sept.

Summer brings the heat of fire, and with it, a spiritual awakening in our hearts. This season is related to our soul work, and to the developmental phase of adolescence. Within this time of year, we work with identity. We ask questions such as:

Cancer’s new moon leads this time, and the Chariot in Tarot consciousness. This is a time to question, shed, or reinforce our shell, the home of our soul.

I will be kicking this season’s therapeutic journey off with an online New Moon Ceremony for the Crab and Cancer hosted with my friend and colleague Nicole Feola from Living Moons Astrology. Stay tuned for that info, but save the date of JULY 14 from 5-7 PM.

This Friday, May 8, I will be starting a six-week embodied process group with a small group of local folks, in person. Woo! This is your chance to meet up with others in community and to have a confidential, deep, and safe place to work with what is inside. Perhaps you are feeling:

• in transition or between identities

• creatively blocked or disconnected

• overwhelmed, tender, or uncertain

• aware that something deeper is asking for your attention

Sometimes it is difficult to name what is happening, and we need collaboration from our more-than-human kin to understand.

This is how art operates in our bodies.

Art allows for expression of uncertainty.
Art forms the unknown into the known. 
Art allows space for indecision and confusion.
