A veces siento que quizá no amo suficiente:
me cuesta dar abrazos,
acompañar a alguien en su dolor
o incluso alegrarme por sus victorias.
Pero normalmente, a mi manera, intento estar presente.

Algunos días me siento culpable
por pensar que quizá no me sienten cercano,
pero siempre me esfuerzo por sonreír
y ayudar a quien lo necesite,

Sometimes I feel like I don’t love enough:
I find it hard to give hugs,
to be there for someone in their pain,
or even to celebrate their victories.
But usually, in my own way, I try to be present.

Some days I feel guilty
for wondering if they feel me distant,
but I always try my best to smile
and help whoever needs it,
even if I don’t get anything in return.

You may never get the sweet words you’d like,
but I’ll always talk to God about you
whenever you ask me to.

At other times I have found myself
asking God for forgiveness
for not knowing how to love as others would like,
but then He shows me that my effort has value:
that each person I prayed for, listened to, served,
did not need my words to experience love.

Perhaps it’s simply that we don’t all love the same way,
we don’t all speak the same language;
for some of us it’s just a little harder.

But I think questioning if we truly love
is a good sign:
it means we’re trying to love.
That’s what Paul wrote to the Corinthians:

The other day, while I was sleeping, something happened that had never happened to me before. Basically, I dreamt a Bible verse. It wasn’t a psychedelic vision or anything like that. Just three words that resonated in my heart, and for some reason, I knew that when I woke up in the morning, I had to write about them:

Faith, hope, and love.

So, in the middle of the night, I woke up. I didn’t get up to write, but I grabbed my phone and recorded a 13-second voice note, which would later become this post. So I hope you find it interesting.

In the Bible, specifically in the book of James, it says this:

“So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless.” (James 2:17 NLT)

This book is believed to be the first, or one of the first, to be written in the New Testament.1 And this verse in particular catches my attention because it shows what faith meant to the early church. In it, James doesn’t give a definition of what faith is in essence. Rather, he is more concerned with expressing the fruit it should produce in the members of the church.

Then, in the book of Hebrews, which according to tradition was written after James,2 the author presents us with an approximation to the definition of what faith is:

“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” (Hebrews 11:1 NIV)

After giving us that brief definition, the book shows us a series of examples of people whose lives were marked by their extraordinary faith.

In broad terms, it says: by faith, Abel offered a sacrifice; by faith, Noah built the ark; by faith, Abraham walked to the promised land; by faith, Moses’ parents hid him when he was born; by faith, Rahab helped the Israelite spies escape, etc. (Hebrews 11:1-40).

My point is that, as in James, each of those examples of faith the Bible gives us is marked by an action. This suggests that faith itself is expressed as an action, not as a statement.

A.W. Tozer wrote:

“The Bible makes no attempt to define faith… faith is not defined philosophically, but functionally. It states what faith is in operation, not what it is in essence. It assumes the presence of faith and shows what it produces, not precisely what it is.”3

Now, faith is one of the so-called theological virtues. This term refers to three virtues that have God as their origin, motive, and end:

Faith, hope, and love.

Unlike human virtues, which can be developed through effort and reason, theological virtues are infused by God into the soul of the believer and guide the entire Christian life towards Him. They are the foundation of our relationship with God.

The apostle Paul presents them in 1 Corinthians 13:

“Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love.” (1 Corinthians 13:13 NLT)

What strikes me most is that the Bible doesn’t offer a definition for hope, much less one for love. Not even one as brief as the definition given for faith.

So, if faith is defined in terms of what it should produce in the life of the believer, the question that arises is:

And what about hope and love? What should these two virtues produce?

The Greek word for hope that Paul uses in 1 Corinthians 13 is “elpis” (ἐλπίς), which comes from the primitive “élpo,” meaning to wait eagerly, usually with pleasure, expectation, and confidence.4

In other words, hope in the life of a believer is not expressed through optimism, nor is it the same as faith, although they are related. While faith is the certainty of what is not seen in the present, hope looks toward the future, toward what has not yet been fulfilled. And this active waiting is evidenced in the life of the believer through perseverance.

Hope manifests itself as perseverance in the midst of uncertainty, suffering, and pain.

Similarly, just as James did regarding faith, in Romans 5 Paul describes hope in the same way, in terms of what it produces, not what it is in essence. He says:

“Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.” (Romans 5:3-5 NIV)

And here a connection emerges between these three virtues that takes us back to what Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 13. Faith and hope are not anchored in a vacuum. Both are grounded in a third virtue that is deeper than they are and that sustains them: love. And not just any kind of love, but the love that comes from God.

Without God’s love as its foundation, hope would ultimately amount to nothing more than enduring for the sake of enduring, with empty expectations. Likewise, without God’s love, faith would be merely religion, moral striving, and empty works too.

Paul himself says it in verse 2:

“If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.” (1 Corinthians 13:2 NIV)

And right after writing those words, he repeats the pattern: he describes love. Not in essence, but in function. In verses 4-7 he wrote:

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” (1 Corinthians 13:4-7 NIV)

Again, there is no definition. Rather, there is a description of what love looks like when it manifests itself in the life of a believer.

Then a new question arises:

Why doesn’t the Bible define these three profound virtues in their essence?

Perhaps the reason is that it’s impossible.

To define love, faith, or hope in essence would be to try to define God himself, and that is beyond our capacity.

Furthermore, a philosophical description doesn’t transform lives. What transforms the believer is not understanding what they are but living them. Because these three are not concepts or statements; they are expressions of a living relationship with God.

El otro día, mientras dormía, me sucedió algo que nunca antes me había pasado. Básicamente, soñé con un versículo de la Biblia. No fue una visión psicodélica ni nada por el estilo. Simplemente tres palabras que resonaban en mi corazón y que, por alguna razón, sabía que cuando despertara en la mañana tenía que escribir sobre ellas:

Fe, esperanza y amor.

Así que, en medio de la noche, desperté. No me levanté a escribir, pero tomé mi celular y grabé una nota de voz de 13 segundos con lo que posteriormente se convertiría en este post. Así que espero que te parezca interesante.

En la Biblia, específicamente en el libro de Santiago, dice así:

“Como pueden ver, la fe por sí sola no es suficiente. A menos que produzca buenas acciones, está muerta y es inútil.” (Santiago 2:17 NTV)

Este libro se cree que fue el primero, o uno de los primeros, en ser escrito del Nuevo Testamento.1 Y este versículo en específico me llama la atención, porque en él se muestra lo que la fe significaba para la iglesia primitiva. En él, Jacobo, su escritor, no da una definición de lo que la fe es en esencia. Sino que se preocupa más por expresar el fruto que ella debería producir en los miembros de la iglesia.

Luego, en el libro de Hebreos, que según la tradición fue escrito posterior a Santiago,2 el autor nos presenta una aproximación a la definición de lo que la fe es:

“Ahora bien, la fe es tener confianza en lo que esperamos, es tener certeza de lo que no vemos.” (Hebreos 11:1 NVI)

Después de darnos esa pequeña definición, el libro nos muestra una serie de ejemplos de personas cuyas vidas fueron marcadas por su extraordinaria fe.

A grandes rasgos, dice: por fe, Abel ofreció un sacrificio; por fe, Noé construyó el arca; por fe, Abraham caminó hasta la tierra prometida; por fe, los padres de Moisés lo escondieron cuando nació; por fe, Rahab ayudó a los espías israelitas a escapar, etc. (Hebreos 11:1-40).

Mi punto es que, al igual que en Santiago, cada uno de esos ejemplos de fe que nos da la Biblia está marcado por una acción. Lo que nos da a entender que la fe en sí misma se expresa como una acción, no como una declaración.

A.W. Tozer escribió:

“La Biblia no hace ningún esfuerzo en definir la fe… la fe no es definida filosóficamente, sino en manera funcional. Se afirma lo que la fe es en operación, no lo que es en esencia. Se asume la presencia de la fe, y muestra lo que ella produce, no precisamente lo que ella es.”

Ahora, la fe es una de las llamadas virtudes teologales. Este término se refiere a tres virtudes que tienen a Dios como origen, motivo y fin:

La fe, la esperanza y el amor.

A diferencia de las virtudes humanas, que pueden desarrollarse con el esfuerzo y la razón, las virtudes teologales son infundidas por Dios en el alma del creyente y orientan toda la vida cristiana hacia Él. Son, en ese sentido, el fundamento de nuestra relación con Dios.

El apóstol Pablo las presenta en 1 Corintios 13:

“Tres cosas durarán para siempre: la fe, la esperanza y el amor; y la mayor de las tres es el amor.” (1 Corintios 13:13 NTV)

Lo que a mí me llama poderosamente la atención es que en la Biblia no encontramos una definición para la esperanza y mucho menos una para el amor. Ni siquiera una tan breve como la que se nos da para la fe.

Así que, si la fe se nos define en función de lo que debe producir en la vida del creyente, la pregunta que surge es:

¿Y qué pasa con la esperanza y el amor? ¿Qué deberían producir estas dos virtudes?

La palabra griega para esperanza que Pablo utiliza en 1 Corintios 13 es “elpis” (ἐλπίς), que proviene del primitivo “élpo,” que significa esperar con anhelo, por lo general con placer, expectación y confianza.3

En otras palabras, la esperanza en la vida del creyente no se muestra a través del optimismo, ni es lo mismo que la fe, aunque están relacionadas. Mientras la fe es la certeza de lo que no se ve en el presente, la esperanza mira hacia el futuro, hacia lo que aún no se ha cumplido. Y esa espera activa se evidencia en la vida del creyente mediante la perseverancia.

La esperanza se manifiesta como perseverancia en medio de la incertidumbre, del sufrimiento y del dolor.

También, al igual que lo hizo Jacobo en el libro de Santiago con respecto a la fe, en Romanos 5 Pablo nos describe la esperanza de la misma forma, en función de lo que produce, no de lo que es en esencia. Él dice:

“Y no solo en esto, sino también en nuestros sufrimientos, porque sabemos que el sufrimiento produce perseverancia; la perseverancia, entereza de carácter; la entereza de carácter, esperanza. Y esta esperanza no nos defrauda, porque Dios ha derramado su amor en nuestro corazón por el Espíritu Santo que nos ha dado.” (Romanos 5:3-5 NVI)

Y aquí aparece una conexión entre estas tres virtudes que nos lleva de regreso a lo que Pablo escribió en 1 Corintios 13. La fe y la esperanza no están ancladas en el vacío. Ambas están fundamentadas en una tercera virtud que es más profunda que ellas y que las sostiene: el amor. Y no cualquier tipo de amor, sino el que proviene de Dios.

Sin el amor de Dios como fundamento, la esperanza terminaría siendo solo resistir por resistir, con expectativas vacías. De igual manera, sin el amor de Dios, la fe sería solo religión, esfuerzo moral, obras también vacías.

Pablo mismo lo dice en el vv.2:

“Si tengo el don de profecía y entiendo todos los misterios y poseo todo conocimiento, y si tengo una fe que logra trasladar montañas, pero me falta el amor, no soy nada.” (1 Corintios 13:2 NVI)

Y justo después de escribir esas palabras, él repite el patrón: describe el amor. Pero no en esencia, sino en función. En los versículos del 4-7 escribió:

“El amor es paciente, es bondadoso. El amor no es envidioso ni presumido ni orgulloso. No se comporta con rudeza, no es egoísta, no se enoja fácilmente, no guarda rencor. El amor no se deleita en la maldad, sino que se regocija con la verdad. Todo lo disculpa, todo lo cree, todo lo espera, todo lo soporta.” (1 Corintios 13:4-7 NVI)

De nuevo, no hay una definición. Sino una descripción de cómo se ve el amor cuando se manifiesta en la vida del creyente.

Entonces surge una nueva pregunta:

¿Por qué la Biblia no define estas tres virtudes tan trascendentes en esencia?

Quizá la razón es porque no se puede.

Definir el amor, la fe o la esperanza en esencia sería intentar definir a Dios mismo, y eso está más allá de nuestra capacidad.

Además, una descripción filosófica no transforma vidas. Lo que transforma al creyente no es entender qué son, sino vivirlas. Porque las tres no son conceptos ni declaraciones, son expresiones de una relación viva con Dios.

What language does God speak?

I suppose each of us thinks He speaks to us in our own language. But what about when we’re in heaven? Will there be a new language? Perhaps the one spoken on earth before humankind attempted to reach heaven.

Why did God confuse tongues? Was it really so bad that all of humanity could communicate?

For the past few weeks at my church, we’ve been studying the Major Prophets: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel. Something that struck me while we were analyzing them was discovering that, during the time of the Babylonian exile, the Jewish people “lost” their language. Actually, they didn’t lose it entirely; it wasn’t as if they forgot it, but Hebrew ceased to be their everyday language and was replaced by Aramaic, the language of the Babylonians. 1

And this was a detail that did not go unnoticed by me.

A few months ago, I had the opportunity to participate in a conference entitled “The Language of the Heart.” There, a missionary family shared their experience working in Papua New Guinea translating the Bible into local languages. This country is considered the most linguistically diverse territory in the world, with more than 800 recognized languages. Given that there are approximately 7,000 living languages ​​in the world, Papua New Guinea is home to more than 10% of the world’s languages. 2

And in many of those languages, they do not have access to the Bible.

When God confused the languages ​​of the world, did He know this would happen? Did He know there would be people who would never have access to His Word?

Yes, He knew it. But it was necessary.

When God confused languages ​​at Babel, it was in response to humanity’s sin. When the Jews were forced to communicate in another language during the exile, it too was a consequence of a history marked by sin.

Sin separates us from God. And God is the Word.

I’m not saying that the fact that 800 languages ​​exist in Papua New Guinea is a consequence of their sin. But the diversity of languages ​​in the world is the strongest and most evident proof of our separation from God, as a consequence of our sin.

That is why at Pentecost, the Holy Spirit also manifested himself through language. Because Christ, through his redemptive sacrifice, came to eliminate the separation between us and God. The Word dwelt among us to draw us closer to him.

At Babel, man tried to reach God. But that’s not how it works.

God reached us.

He dwelt among us in the person of Christ, and now lives in us in the person of the Holy Spirit.

And even though we speak different languages, the Holy Spirit makes Christ’s message understandable to people of all tongues. Because God speaks to us in the language of our hearts.

So, perhaps we don’t know what language we will speak in heaven. The Bible doesn’t say. But what we do know is that there will be people from every nation, tribe, people and language before the throne. People who were once separated by borders, cultures, and languages, worshipping the same God together.

Perhaps that is the true language of heaven. Not a new or ancient tongue, but hearts finally reconciled with God and with one another.

¿En qué idioma habla Dios?

Supongo que cada uno de nosotros piensa que Él nos habla en nuestro propio idioma. Pero, ¿y cuando estemos en el cielo? ¿Existirá un idioma nuevo? Quizá el que se hablaba en la tierra antes de que el ser humano intentara alcanzar el cielo.

¿Por qué Dios confundió los idiomas? ¿Realmente era tan malo que toda la humanidad se pudiera comunicar?

Las últimas semanas en mi iglesia hemos estado estudiando a los Profetas Mayores: Isaías, Jeremías, Ezequiel y Daniel. Algo que me llamó la atención mientras los analizábamos fue descubrir que, durante la época del exilio en Babilonia, el pueblo judío “perdió” su idioma. En realidad, no lo perdió del todo; no fue como que lo olvidaron, pero el hebreo dejó de ser su idioma de uso diario y fue reemplazado por el arameo, el idioma de los babilonios. 1

Y este fue un detalle que para mí no pasó desapercibido.

Hace unos meses, tuve la oportunidad de participar en una conferencia titulada “El idioma del corazón.” En ella, una familia de misioneros compartió su experiencia trabajando en Papúa Nueva Guinea en la traducción de la Biblia a sus idiomas locales. Este país es considerado el territorio más diverso lingüísticamente del mundo, con más de 800 lenguas reconocidas. Tomando en cuenta que en el mundo existen aproximadamente 7,000 lenguas vivas, en Papúa Nueva Guinea se concentra más del 10% de los idiomas del mundo. 2

Y en muchos de esos idiomas, no tienen acceso a la Biblia.

Cuando Dios confundió los idiomas del mundo, ¿sabría que esto pasaría? ¿Sabría que habría personas que nunca tendrían acceso a Su Palabra?

Sí, lo sabía. Pero era necesario.

Cuando Dios confundió las lenguas en Babel, fue como respuesta al pecado de la humanidad. Cuando los judíos fueron obligados a comunicarse en otro idioma durante el exilio, también fue consecuencia de una historia marcada por el pecado.

El pecado nos separa de Dios. Y Dios es la Palabra.

No estoy diciendo que la razón por la que en Papúa Nueva Guinea existan 800 idiomas sea una consecuencia de su pecado. Pero la diversidad de lenguas en el mundo es la evidencia más fuerte y evidente de nuestra separación de Dios, como consecuencia de nuestro pecado.

Por eso en Pentecostés, el Espíritu Santo se manifestó también a través del lenguaje. Porque Cristo, mediante su sacrificio redentor, vino a eliminar la separación que hay entre nosotros y Dios. La Palabra habitó entre nosotros para acercarnos a Él.

En Babel, el hombre intentó alcanzar a Dios. Pero así no funciona.

Dios nos alcanzó a nosotros.

Habitó entre nosotros en la persona de Cristo, y ahora vive en nosotros en la persona del Espíritu Santo.

Y aunque hablemos idiomas distintos, el Espíritu Santo hace que el mensaje de Cristo sea comprensible para personas de todas las lenguas. Porque Dios nos habla en el idioma de nuestro corazón.

Entonces, quizá no sabemos qué idioma hablaremos en el cielo. La Biblia no lo dice. Pero lo que sí sabemos es que habrá personas de toda nación, tribu, pueblo y lengua delante del trono. Personas que alguna vez estuvieron separadas por fronteras, culturas e idiomas, adorando juntas al mismo Dios.

Quizá ese sea el verdadero idioma del cielo. No una lengua nueva ni antigua, sino corazones finalmente reconciliados con Dios y unos con otros.

Sin destroyed
what He once dreamed.

Death came
and separated us.

And like a lamb,

La semana pasada en mi iglesia tuvimos un grupo misionero de jóvenes de Estados Unidos que vinieron a realizar algunas actividades con nuestros jóvenes. Yo participé como parte de la organización y uno de los traductores.

Amo trabajar con grupos misioneros, principalmente porque cuando era más joven Dios usó a algunos de ellos para acercarme a Él cuando yo ni siquiera sabía cómo hacerlo.

Por experiencia propia he visto cómo Dios usa a misioneros alrededor del mundo para impactar iglesias, comunidades e incluso generaciones enteras. Por eso doy gracias a Dios por ellos.

Pero hoy, después de haber servido yo mismo como misionero, mi perspectiva sobre ellos cambió. Ya no tengo expectativas de recibir alguna bendición espiritual, más bien mi oración cambió hacia:

¿Cómo puedo ser yo ahora de bendición para ellos?

Así que esa era mi oración para con este grupo de chicos. De hecho, el último día, después de que terminamos con las actividades que se tenían planeadas, los misioneros se quedaron a compartir con los jóvenes de la iglesia durante la noche. En ese momento uno de ellos, un chico de 17 años, se acercó a mí y comenzamos a conversar.

Cuando estaba hablando con ese joven, le pregunté sobre su vida, su familia, hacía cuánto tiempo había conocido al Señor, cómo se sentía en Costa Rica, sus expectativas del futuro, y le hice una de mis preguntas favoritas para hacerle a misioneros.

¿Qué pasará al siguiente día?

En un principio él no entendió a qué me refería.

Lo que yo le estaba preguntando era: ¿cuáles eran sus expectativas cuando volviera a casa? ¿Qué pasaría con su vida después de que la emoción y la adrenalina del viaje misionero se acabara? ¿Qué seguía? ¿Simplemente esperar hasta el próximo viaje?

Lo he visto muchas veces: jóvenes que por emoción toman la oportunidad de ir en un viaje misionero, pero que vuelven a casa, vuelven a su vida normal y lo siguiente que sabes sobre ellos es que se alejaron de Dios. Así que quería asegurarme de que estos chicos tuvieran claro que para ellos era solo el comienzo.

El joven simplemente respondió:

“No sé, no había pensado en eso, simplemente creo que será lindo volver a casa.”

A lo que yo le dije:

“Será un martes cualquiera. Y eso está bien…”

Muchas veces, después de una experiencia espiritual intensa, la vida se puede sentir pesada.

Ya no está la emoción de estar en otro país, ni la prisa de aprovechar el tiempo lo más que se pueda, ya no está la curiosidad de conocer muchas personas nuevas cada día. Tampoco está el devocional grupal cada mañana, ni los diez servicios diferentes a los que asistes en una semana, tampoco las decenas o cientos de niños con los que puedes jugar durante las actividades.

Y aunque esto puede ser un alivio, porque vuelves a tus comodidades, la vida espiritual no se puede resumir a un evento o a una semana. Pero, cuando no entendemos eso, puede parecer que sí lo es. Y es por eso que la vida se puede sentir pesada.

Muchas veces necesitamos la emoción y la adrenalina para sentir que Dios haciendo algo. Sin embargo, tenemos que entender que después de que el campamento se acaba, después de que el congreso o la conferencia termina, después de que vuelves del viaje misionero al otro lado del mundo, vivirás un martes cualquiera y eso está bien, porque Dios también está allí.

En la Biblia, no se menciona prácticamente nada de lo que Jesús hizo los treinta años antes de iniciar su ministerio, solo sabemos un par de cosas.

La primera la encontramos en Lucas 2:52, en donde se menciona a Jesús cuando aún era un niño, y dice lo siguiente:

“Jesús crecía en sabiduría y en estatura, y en el favor de Dios y de toda la gente.” (Lucas 2:52 NTV)

Aquí vemos que Jesús era un niño común, viviendo una vida ordinaria, en una familia promedio, pero aun así honró a Dios a través de esa vida y el favor de Dios estaba con él.

La segunda cosa que sabemos sobre él es que tenía una profesión, en Marcos 6:3 dice:

“Y se burlaban: ‘Es un simple carpintero, hijo de María y hermano de Santiago, José, Judas y Simón. Y sus hermanas viven aquí mismo entre nosotros.’ ...” (Marcos 6:3 NTV)

Aquí, el Evangelio nos muestra que Jesús era un hombre común, con una profesión común. Y eso agradaba a Dios.

Porque Jesús era igual de espiritual cuando trabajaba como carpintero que cuando murió en la cruz por nuestros pecados.

Para Dios, los treinta años antes de que Jesús comenzara su ministerio no fueron un desperdicio. Jesús glorificó al Padre mientras era un niño y adolescente que obedecía a José y María, mientras aprendía un oficio, mientras estudiaba Su Palabra en la sinagoga, mientras comía, mientras descansaba…

Porque una vida ordinaria también puede glorificar a Dios.

El apóstol Pablo escribió:

“Trabajen de buena gana en todo lo que hagan, como si fuera para el Señor y no para la gente.” (Colosenses 3:23 NTV)

Eso se lo escribió, entre otras personas, a esclavos. Porque aun viviendo una vida como esclavos, obedeciendo a sus amos, esas personas podían vivir una vida que glorificara a Dios.

Sé que todos soñamos con hacer cosas extraordinarias para Dios. Y, a veces, pensamos que para servirlo bien deberíamos hacer grandes obras. Pero quizá Dios prefiere que le honremos cada día de nuestras vidas ordinarias, y no solamente durante un evento extraordinario una vez al año.

Así que esto fue lo que compartí con aquel joven:

“Será un martes cualquiera. Y eso está bien, porque Dios también estará allí.”

Last week, a group of young missionaries from the United States visited my church to do some activities with our youth. I participated as part of the organization and as one of the translators.

I love working with missionary groups, mainly because when I was younger God used some of them to help me get closer to him when I didn’t even know how to do it.

From personal experience, I’ve seen how God uses missionaries around the world to impact churches, communities, and even entire generations. That’s why I thank God for them.

But today, having served as a missionary myself, my perspective on them has changed. I no longer expect to receive any spiritual blessing; rather, my prayer has shifted to:

How can I be a blessing to them?

So that was my prayer for this group of teens. In fact, on the last day, after we finished the planned activities, the missionaries stayed to spend the evening with the youth from the church. At that time, one of them, a 17-year-old boy, approached me and we started talking.

When I was talking to that kid, I asked him about his life, his family, how long he had known the Lord, how he felt in Costa Rica, his expectations for the future, and I asked him one of my favorite questions to ask missionaries.

What will happen the next day?

At first he didn’t understand what I meant.

What I was asking him was what his expectations were when he returned home. What would happen to his life after the excitement and adrenaline of the mission trip ended? What was next? Just waiting until the next trip?

I’ve seen it many times: young people who, out of excitement, take the opportunity to go on a mission trip, but they come home, return to their normal lives, and the next thing you know, they’ve drifted away from God. So I wanted to make sure they understood that for them, this was just the beginning.

The boy simply replied:

“I don’t know, I hadn’t thought about that, I just think it will be nice to go home.”

To which I replied:

“It’ll be just another Tuesday. And that’s okay…”

Often, after an intense spiritual experience, life can feel heavy.

The excitement of being in another country is gone, as is the urgency to make the most of our time. The curiosity of meeting many new people each day is also gone. The group devotions each morning are gone, as are the ten different services you attend each week, and the dozens or hundreds of children you can play with during activities.

And while this can be a relief, because you return to your comfort zone, the spiritual life cannot be reduced to a single event or a week. But when you don’t understand that, it can seem that way. That’s why life can feel so heavy.

We often need excitement and adrenaline to feel God is at work. However, we must understand that after camp ends, after the conference concludes, after you return from a mission trip to the other side of the world, you’ll experience an ordinary Tuesday, and that’s okay, because God is there too.

The Bible makes virtually no mention of what Jesus did in the thirty years before he began his ministry; we only know a few things.

The first one we find in Luke 2:52, where Jesus is mentioned when he was still a child, and it says the following:

“Jesus grew in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and all the people.” (Luke 2:52 NLT)

Here we see that Jesus was an ordinary child, living an ordinary life, in an average family, but he still honored God through that life and God’s favor was with him.

The second thing we know about him is that he had a profession, in Mark 6:3 it says:

“Then they scoffed, ‘He’s just a carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon. And his sisters live right here among us.’” (Mark 6:3 NLT)

Here, the Gospel shows us that Jesus was an ordinary man, with an ordinary profession. And that pleased God.

Because Jesus was just as spiritual when he worked as a carpenter as when he died on the cross for our sins.

For God, the thirty years before Jesus began his ministry were not wasted. Jesus glorified the Father while he was a child and teenager obeying Joseph and Mary, while learning a trade, while studying His Word in the synagogue, while eating, while resting…

Because an ordinary life can also glorify God.

The apostle Paul wrote:

“Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.” (Colossians 3:23 NLT)

He wrote that, among others, to slaves. Because even living a life as slaves, obeying their masters, those people could live a life that glorified God.

I know we all dream of doing extraordinary things for God. And sometimes we think that to serve him well we should perform great deeds. But perhaps God prefers that we honor him every day of our ordinary lives, and not just during an extraordinary event once a year.

So this is what I shared with that young man:

“It will be just another Tuesday. And that’s okay, because God will be there too.”

In 2017, I accepted one of the biggest challenges of my life: becoming a youth pastor at my local church. That meant so much to me. I was 21 years old, had no formal training, and was also studying for my university degree in another city, two hours away.

So, my life became really busy. During the week I studied, and on weekends and days off I served with the youth at church.

At first I volunteered, but after a couple of years I started receiving a salary from the church. With this came many more responsibilities and tasks, which meant I needed to dedicate more time to them. So I had to make some decisions, one of which was to take my university studies at a more relaxed pace.

God was asking me for a sacrifice, and apparently, that was my time.

At university, I studied Chemical Engineering, a difficult degree that, at least in my country, Costa Rica, takes six years to complete, provided you don’t fall behind in any subjects. In my case, it took me about ten years to finish.

While I was studying, I suffered the loss of my younger brother, an accident that injured my hand and caused me some problems and debt, and because of my work as a youth pastor, I wasn’t able to take all the courses I needed to each semester. Not to mention the pandemic in 2020, which caused some labs and practical courses to be delayed as well.

But honestly, I was fine with that. Although I was clearly under pressure, I always understood that there are more important things than a title, and serving God was my priority.

In 2022, my church pastor, who was a missionary, decided to return to his home country. This led to some leadership changes, one of which was my becoming the co-pastor. So, I was no longer just the youth pastor; I now had many more responsibilities with the congregation.

I held both positions as long as I could, but in September 2023 I finally resigned from youth ministry to focus on my other responsibilities and to be able to, someday, finish my degree.

Although I was presented with many opportunities to enter seminary, I never felt it was the Lord’s direction. I was certain it was his will that I complete my studies, as I longed to do (I already wrote about this in: First thing).

In 2024, I finally finished.

So I believed that God would give me the desires of my heart. His Word says:

“Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalms 37:4 NIV)

Since finishing my studies, I’ve been looking for job opportunities. I’ve sent out hundreds of applications, of which only a few have led to interviews, and those few have resulted in rejections.

So the question that came to my mind, probably a lie from the enemy, was:

What if the desires of my heart have never been the desires of God’s heart?

What if my desires don’t actually please him?

Many of these things I’ve already covered in other essays. But, in short, I resigned from my position as co-pastor, spent a few months planting a church in another country, returned to Costa Rica, and since then, I’ve been attending a new church. However, I still haven’t found a job in my field.

A few weeks ago, I was at a Bible study at my current church, and the pastor used his son as an example to illustrate his point. He shared that his son had been given a great job opportunity. The pastor added that his son was a young man who had sacrificed a lot to finish his degree and that even after moving to another city, he remained faithful for a while, coming to the church to serve with the youth group.

The point is that, in the end, the pastor used these words, which are found in 1 Samuel, as the conclusion of the teaching:

“… But now the Lord declares: ‘Far be it from me! Those who honor me I will honor, but those who despise me will be disdained.” (1 Samuel 2:30b NIV)

God honors those who honor him.

I remember that day clearly. Anyone who has gone through a long job search will understand how exhausting, frustrating, and burdensome some days can feel. And that was definitely one of those days for me. So, that night I left that church wondering:

Could it be that all the years and sacrifices I made to serve the Lord never truly honored him, and that’s why He doesn’t honor me?

It wasn’t a matter of comparing it to what the pastor said about his son; it was a question that arose from frustration, from the expectations I had about God.

However, this past Sunday the pastor used that same verse again during the sermon. And this time I didn’t take it personally, but I couldn’t help but think about how harsh those words can be.

God honors those who honor him.

Yes, they are absolutely true, but many times they are used in a way that, rather than encouraging people, ends up being words of judgment.

Because if God honors those who honor him, but I feel that He does not honor me, then it means that my life does not honor him either.

Thus a new question was born:

What kind of life truly honors God?

Serving in church, tithing, reading the Bible, praying, fasting… if I’m not “good” or “faithful” or “disciplined” at doing these things, then am I not honoring God? And if I am doing them and God doesn’t bless me in the way I expect or desire, then am I not honoring God either?

If I have tried to honor God, why do I feel that He does not honor me?

I believe that spiritual dissatisfaction is one of the most subtle and powerful lies the enemy uses to hinder our relationship with God.

So my intention is to explain what it means that God honors those who honor him, from the context in which it was written.

First of all, the Hebrew word for honor used in 1 Samuel 2:30 is כָּבַד (kabád), which means: to feel weight, i.e. in a bad sense (burdensome, severe, obtuse) or in a good sense (numerous, rich, honorable); causatio to make heavier (in the same two senses).1

In other words, honoring God with our lives means giving him the weight He deserves over them.

Second, in 1 Samuel 2:29, literally just a few lines before the verse we are talking about, God, through the prophet, says the following to the priest Eli, to whom he is addressing himself:

“Why do you scorn my sacrifice and offering that I prescribed for my dwelling? Why do you honor your sons more than me by fattening yourselves on the choice parts of every offering made by my people Israel?” (1 Samuel 2:29 NIV)

Let me explain what was happening:

Eli was the high priest and, at that time, the judge over Israel. His sons, Hophni and Phinehas, also served as priests in the tabernacle, but the Bible describes them as men who “did not know the Lord.” They stole the offerings that the people brought to God, taking for themselves the best portions of the sacrifices before they were presented to him. Furthermore, they committed sexual immorality with the women who served at the entrance to the tabernacle.

Eli knew all this and rebuked them, but his words never became actions. As a father and as high priest, he had the authority to stop them, but he chose not to. Deep down, he chose the honor of his sons over the honor of God. And it is in this context that God says to him, “Why do you honor your sons more than me?”

In other words, God was saying to Eli, “Why do your sons have more weight in your heart than I do?”

If honoring means giving weight, God’s promise in 1 Samuel 2:30 is not just “God blesses those who obey or serve him,” it is something much deeper:

The promise really is: God gives weight to those who give weight to him.

In Matthew 10:37-38 Jesus says:

“Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me.” (Matthew 10:37-38 NIV)

Jesus is telling us that He should have more weight in our hearts than anything else. That when the scales have to tip, they should tip toward him. That’s what Eli couldn’t do. His sons weighed more than God in his heart. And that’s exactly what God doesn’t want to happen to us.

So, going back to where I started.

When I left that church, feeling struck by the pastor’s words, “God honors those who honor him,” the question I asked myself wasn’t the right one. I wondered if I had honored God enough. If I had served enough, sacrificed enough, been faithful enough.

The right question I should have asked myself at that moment is:

What weighs more in my heart?

Because honoring God isn’t a list of religious activities. It’s not about how many times I went to church, how much I gave, or how much I prayed. It’s a matter of weight. Does my career weigh more than God? Does my need for financial security weigh more than his will? Does my desire for pleasure or comfort weigh more? Do my expectations of how He should bless me weigh more than his way of doing so?

And perhaps the greatest honor God can give us doesn’t always resemble what we expect, because God’s honor doesn’t work like the world’s honor.

The greatest honor God can bestow upon someone is to become more like Christ.

En 2017 acepté uno de los retos más importantes en mi vida: ser pastor de jóvenes en mi iglesia local. Eso significó muchas cosas en mi vida. Tenía 21 años, no tenía ningún tipo de preparación y, además, estaba cursando mi carrera universitaria en otra ciudad, a dos horas de distancia.

Así que, mi vida se volvió realmente ocupada. Entre semana estudiaba y los fines de semana y días libres servía con los jóvenes de la iglesia.

Al principio servía de forma voluntaria, pero después de un par de años comencé a recibir un salario por parte de la iglesia. Con este venían muchas más responsabilidades y tareas, lo que implicaba que necesitara disponer de más tiempo para llevarlas a cabo. Así que tuve que tomar decisiones, una de ellas fue tomarme la universidad con un poco más de calma.

Dios me estaba pidiendo un sacrificio, y al parecer, ese era mi tiempo.

En la universidad, estudié Ingeniería Química, una carrera difícil que, al menos en mi país, Costa Rica, toma seis años para graduarse, siempre y cuando no te retrases con ninguna materia. En mi caso, me tomó diez años terminarla, más o menos.

Mientras estudiaba sufrí el fallecimiento de mi hermano menor, un accidente en mi mano que me trajo algunos problemas y una deuda, además de que, debido a mi trabajo como pastor de jóvenes, no llevaba todos los cursos que debía cada semestre. Sin contar que tuvimos una pandemia en 2020, lo que provocó que algunos laboratorios y cursos prácticos se retrasaran también.

Pero honestamente, yo estaba bien con eso. Aunque claramente tenía presión, siempre entendí que hay cosas más importantes que un título, y servir a Dios era mi prioridad.

En 2022, el pastor de mi iglesia, que era misionero, decidió volver a su país. Esto generó algunos cambios en el liderazgo, uno de ellos fue que yo me convirtiera en el co-pastor de la iglesia. Así que, ya no era solo el pastor de jóvenes, ahora tenía muchas más responsabilidades con la congregación.

Sostuve ambos puestos tanto como pude, pero en septiembre del 2023 finalmente renuncié al ministerio de jóvenes, para enfocarme en mis otras responsabilidades y poder, algún día, terminar mi carrera.

Aunque muchas veces se me presentó la oportunidad de entrar a un seminario, nunca sentí que fuera la dirección del Señor. Estaba seguro de que era su voluntad que concluyera con mis estudios, como yo lo anhelaba (ya escribí sobre esto en: Lo primero).

En 2024, finalmente terminé.

Entonces, creí que Dios me daría los deseos de mi corazón. Su Palabra dice:

“Deléitate en el Señor y él te concederá los deseos de tu corazón.” (Salmo 37:4 NVI)

Desde que terminé mis estudios he estado buscando oportunidades de trabajo. He enviado cientos de solicitudes, de las cuales solamente unas pocas se han convertido en entrevistas, que se han convertido en rechazos.

Entonces, la pregunta que vino a mi mente, probablemente una mentira del enemigo, fue:

¿Y si los deseos de mi corazón nunca han sido los del corazón de Dios?

¿Y si realmente mis deseos no le deleitan?

Hay muchas de estas cosas que ya las he contado en otros ensayos. Pero, en resumen, renuncié a mi posición de co-pastor, me fui por unos meses a plantar una iglesia en otro país, regresé a Costa Rica, y desde entonces, me he estado congregando en una nueva iglesia. Sin embargo, sigo sin conseguir empleo en algo relacionado con mi carrera.

Hace unas semanas, estaba en un estudio bíblico en la iglesia a la que asisto ahora y el pastor utilizó a su hijo como ejemplo de la enseñanza que estaba dando. Básicamente, él compartió que le habían dado una gran oportunidad laborar. El pastor añadió que su hijo era un joven que había sacrificado muchas cosas por poder terminar su carrera y que incluso después de mudarse a otra ciudad, él por un tiempo siguió siendo fiel viniendo hasta donde está la iglesia para servir con el grupo de jóvenes.

El punto es que, al final, el pastor utilizó estas palabras, que se encuentran en 1 de Samuel, como conclusión de la enseñanza:

“Por lo tanto —dice el Señor, Dios de Israel—‘... Yo honro a los que me honran y humillo a los que me desprecian.’” (1 Samuel 2:30b NVI)

Dios honra a quienes le honran.

Recuerdo ese día claramente. Todos aquellos que han pasado por un proceso largo de búsqueda de empleo entenderán lo agotadores, frustrantes y pesados que algunos días pueden sentirse. Y justo ese fue uno de esos días para mí. Así que, esa noche salí de esa iglesia preguntándome:

¿Será que todos los años y sacrificios que hice por servir al Señor nunca lo honraron realmente, y por eso Él no me honra a mí?

No era un tema de comparación con lo que contó el pastor sobre su hijo; era una pregunta que nacía desde la frustración, desde las expectativas que yo tenía sobre Dios.

Sin embargo, este domingo anterior el pastor volvió a utilizar ese mismo versículo durante la enseñanza. Y esta vez no me lo tomé personal, pero no pude dejar de pensar en lo duras que pueden ser esas palabras.

Dios honra a quienes lo honran.

Porque sí, son totalmente ciertas, pero muchas veces se usan de una forma en la que más que animar a las personas, terminan siendo palabras de juicio.

Porque si Dios honra a quienes le honran, pero yo siento que a mí no me honra, entonces, significa que mi vida tampoco lo honra a Él.

Así nació una nueva pregunta:

¿Qué tipo de vida es la que realmente honra a Dios?

Servir en la iglesia, dar el diezmo, leer la Biblia, orar, ayunar… si no soy tan “bueno” o “fiel” o “disciplinado” haciendo esas cosas, entonces, ¿no estoy honrando a Dios? Y si sí lo hago y Dios no me bendice de la forma en que yo espero o deseo que me bendiga, entonces, ¿tampoco estoy honrando a Dios?

Si he intentado honrar a Dios, ¿por qué siento que Él no me honra a mí?

Creo que esa insatisfacción espiritual es una de las mentiras más sutiles y poderosas que utiliza el enemigo para estorbar nuestra relación con Dios.

Así que mi intención es explicar qué significa que Dios honra a quienes le honran, desde el contexto en que fue escrito.

Primero que todo, la palabra hebrea para honra utilizada en 1 Samuel 2:30 es כָּבַד (kabád), que significa: sentir peso, i.e. en sentido malo (cargoso, severo, obtuso) o en sentido bueno (numeroso, rico, honorable); causatio hacer más pesado (en los mismos dos sentidos).1

Es decir, honrar a Dios con nuestra vida significa darle el peso que Él merece sobre ella.

Segundo, en 1 Samuel 2:29, literalmente solo unos renglones antes del versículo del que estamos hablando, Dios, a través del profeta le dice lo siguiente al sacerdote Elí, hacia quien se está dirigiendo:

“¿Por qué, pues, tratan ustedes con tanto desprecio los sacrificios y las ofrendas que yo he ordenado traer a mi santuario? ¿Por qué honras a tus hijos más que a mí, y los engordas con lo mejor de todas las ofrendas de mi pueblo Israel?” (1 Samuel 2:29 NVI)

Permíteme explicar lo que estaba pasando:

Elí era el sumo sacerdote y, en ese momento, el Juez sobre Israel. Sus hijos, Ofni y Finees, también servían como sacerdotes en el tabernáculo, pero la Biblia los describe como hombres que “no conocían al Señor.” Robaban las ofrendas que el pueblo llevaba a Dios, tomando para ellos la mejor parte de los sacrificios antes de que fueran presentados ante Él. Además, cometían inmoralidad sexual con las mujeres que servían a la entrada del tabernáculo.

Elí sabía todo esto y los reprendió, pero sus palabras nunca se convirtieron en acciones. Como padre y como sumo sacerdote tenía la autoridad para detenerlos, pero eligió no hacerlo. En el fondo, eligió el honor de sus hijos por encima del honor de Dios. Y es en ese contexto que Dios le dice: “¿Por qué honras a tus hijos más que a mí?”

Es decir, Dios estaba diciéndole a Elí: “¿Por qué tus hijos tienen más peso en tu corazón que yo?”

Si honrar significa dar peso, la promesa de Dios en 1 Samuel 2:30 no es solo “Dios bendice a los que le obedecen o le sirven,” es algo mucho más profundo:

La promesa realmente es: Dios da peso a quienes le dan peso a Él.

En Mateo 10:37-38 Jesús dice:

“El que quiere a su padre o a su madre más que a mí no es digno de mí; el que quiere a su hijo o a su hija más que a mí no es digno de mí; y el que no toma su cruz y me sigue no es digno de mí.” (Mateo 10:37-38 NVI)

Jesús nos está diciendo que Él debe tener más peso en nuestro corazón que cualquier otra cosa. Que cuando la balanza tenga que inclinarse, se incline hacia Él. Eso es lo que Elí no pudo hacer. Sus hijos pesaban más que Dios en su corazón. Y eso es exactamente lo que Dios no quiere que nos pase a nosotros.

Entonces, volviendo a donde comencé.

Cuando salí de aquella iglesia sintiéndome golpeado por las palabras del pastor, “Dios honra a quienes le honran,” la pregunta que me hice no fue la correcta. Me pregunté si yo había honrado suficiente a Dios. Si había servido suficiente, sacrificado suficiente, sido suficientemente fiel.

La pregunta correcta que debí haberme hecho en ese momento es:

¿Qué tiene más peso en mi corazón?

Porque honrar a Dios no es una lista de actividades religiosas. No es cuántas veces fui a la iglesia, cuánto di, cuánto oré. Es una cuestión de peso. ¿Pesa más mi carrera que Dios? ¿Pesa más mi necesidad de seguridad económica que su voluntad? ¿Pesa más mi deseo de placer o comodidad? ¿Pesan más mis expectativas de cómo debería bendecirme que su forma de hacerlo?

Y quizá la honra más grande que Dios puede darnos no siempre se parece a lo que esperamos, porque el honor de Dios no funciona como el honor del mundo.

La mayor honra que Dios puede concederle a alguien es parecerse más a Cristo.

En una ciudad lejana, rodeada por una gran muralla, vivía un hombre llamado Pedro.

Era pescador, como lo habían sido su padre y su abuelo antes que él.

La vida lo obligó a crecer demasiado pronto. Apenas tenía veinticinco años y ya había perdido a sus padres. Su padre había fallecido cuando él tenía diez años y su madre, cuando tenía quince. Sin embargo, también había conocido el amor. Se casó joven y, junto con su esposa, se hicieron cargo de su hermano menor, Andrés.

Todos en la ciudad lo conocían.

Era un hombre de carácter fuerte y de una templanza admirable frente a la adversidad. No importaba cuán mala hubiera sido la pesca; al amanecer del día siguiente, Pedro siempre volvía a intentarlo.

La muralla que rodeaba la ciudad solo tenía dos salidas. La primera era una puerta gigantesca que permanecía siempre abierta. Cualquiera podía cruzarla.

De hecho, muchas personas abandonaban la ciudad por aquella puerta y nunca más se volvía a saber de ellas. Por eso, algunos murmuraban que habían muerto, mientras que otros aseguraban que habían sido tomados como esclavos en ciudades lejanas.

Aunque, en realidad, nadie sabía si existían otros pueblos, pues por aquella puerta las personas solo salían; nunca nadie entraba.

La segunda puerta, en cambio, era pequeña. En la ciudad existía un viejo dicho para referirse a ella: “es más fácil que un camello pase por el ojo de una aguja a que alguien cruce por esa puerta.”

Era tan pequeña, que, por ella, apenas podía pasar un niño. Sin embargo, permanecía siempre cerrada.

Nadie en la ciudad conocía a una sola persona que la hubiera cruzado. Ni siquiera los más ancianos sabían qué había al otro lado.

Sin embargo, existía una vieja leyenda. Se decía que, algún día, alguien llamaría desde el otro lado. Y solo entonces quienes permanecieran esperándolo serían capaces de abrirla y atravesarla.

Cuando Pedro era un niño, su padre solía llevarlo hasta la puerta pequeña. Allí, se sentaban en una banca que juntos habían construido frente a ella, mientras Jonás le contaba a su hijo la vieja leyenda.

Pedro, como todo niño, no tenía la menor intención de esperar sentado: mientras su padre contemplaba la puerta, él corría de un lado a otro, jugando hasta quedar completamente agotado.

Un día, cuando el pequeño Pedro por fin estaba agotado, se acercó a Jonás y le dijo:

—Papá, odio esperar. ¿Por qué no vamos a tocar la puerta? Tal vez ya haya alguien al otro lado que pueda abrirla.

Su padre lo miró con ternura, sonrió y respondió:

—¿Crees que nadie lo ha intentado? He escuchado de personas que incluso han tratado de abrirla por la fuerza, y ni aun así lo consiguieron. Así que solo nos queda esperar, aunque lo odies. Confío en que, algún día, Aquel que ha de venir llegará, y si lo esperamos, podremos abrirla… Ojalá tú sigas siendo un niño cuando suceda; así te será más fácil cruzarla.

Un día, la suegra de Pedro enfermó. Su esposa hacía todo lo posible por cuidarla, pero necesitaban unas medicinas que el médico les había recetado.

Esas semanas la pesca estaba siendo mala. Una intensa ola de calor había hecho descender el nivel del lago, y las redes regresaban cada día más vacías. Lo poco que Pedro conseguía vender apenas alcanzaba para cubrir los gastos de su casa, mucho menos para comprar los medicamentos.

Pedro estaba desesperado.

Para encontrar un poco de calma, decidió salir a caminar. Recorrió las calles sin rumbo fijo hasta que, casi sin darse cuenta, vio a lo lejos aquella banca.

Hace años que no vengo a este lugar. No desde que mi padre falleció —pensó.

Permaneció inmóvil por unos segundos contemplando el lugar.

Seguramente él sabría qué hacer.

Así que se acercó a la banca y tomó asiento.

Respiró hondo.

Quince años han pasado y esa puerta sigue cerrada.

Bajó la mirada.

Odio esperar… pero ya no sé qué más hacer.

—¡Oye! Tú, el que está sentado allí, ¿me podrías alcanzar la cizalla?

Pedro levantó la mirada, sin saber quién le hablaba, y de en medio de los arbustos que estaban a lo largo del camino que llevaba a la puerta pequeña, apareció un hombre con un gran cuchillo, que los estaba podando.

—¡Claro! —respondió Pedro.

Seguidamente se levantó, tomó la cizalla y la llevó hasta aquel hombre.

—Perdona si entré sin permiso en tus terrenos, salí a caminar, venía con mi padre a este lugar cuando era niño. No sabía que tenía dueño.

—No te preocupes, no es mío, yo solo soy el que prepara el camino —respondió el hombre.

—Me llamo Juan, mucho gusto. ¿Tú también esperas que llamen a la puerta? Mucha gente viene por aquí a hacerlo. Aunque la mayoría se cansa pronto y termina marchándose.

—Honestamente, no lo sé. Solía hacerlo con mi padre, él toda su vida esperó para poder abrirla —respondió Pedro.

—Y ¿Para qué preparas el camino? ¿Acaso tú sabes cuándo vendrá el que llamará a la puerta?

—No, pero el camino tiene que estar listo para cuando Él venga.

El camino tiene que estar listo para cuando Él venga… Él…

Pedro volvió a casa.

El pronóstico del clima decía que esa noche entraría, después de mucho tiempo, una tormenta a la ciudad. Aunque a Pedro poco le importaba, él de igual manera debía salir a intentar pescar algo. Lo necesitaba.

Así que él y su equipo prepararon su barco y salieron.

El agua estaba calmada; no parecía que nada malo pudiera pasar. Sin embargo, mientras más se adentraban en el lago, Pedro comenzó a notar cómo el viento se sentía más fuerte y cómo cambiaba rápidamente de dirección. Poco a poco el cielo se oscureció. La niebla comenzó a impedirles ver lo que había a su alrededor.

Las olas comenzaron a romper sobre la cubierta del barco y el caos se apoderó de todo. Cuerdas que se soltaban, cosas que se caían, gritos que no se entendían; la comunicación entre la tripulación se hizo imposible.

Rápidamente, en medio de todo el caos, Pedro tuvo que organizar la evacuación. Su hermano Andrés estaba en el barco y debía asegurarse de que él y los demás hombres estuvieran a salvo. Su padre había muerto en un naufragio durante una tormenta.

Así que Pedro les ordenó a todos que abandonaran el barco y subieran al bote salvavidas.

Mientras se preparaban para liberar el bote, uno de los marineros, Jacobo, el hijo de Zebedeo, un viejo amigo de su padre, cayó al agua.

Pedro, sin dudarlo, se lanzó a rescatarlo. Logró subirlo al bote, pero, cuando lo hizo, una gran ola golpeó.

Y Pedro quedó a la deriva.

Solo en el agua, luchando contra las olas con las pocas fuerzas que le quedaban, Pedro estaba desesperado. No podía ver nada más que agua. Nadaba en todas direcciones, intentando encontrar algo a que aferrarse, pero antes de lograrlo, se quedó sin fuerzas.

Lo siento, papá. Yo tampoco podré estar allí cuando llamen a la puerta… La puerta…

Pedro comenzó a hundirse.

De pronto, una mano firme, que a pesar del frío se sentía cálida, lo tomó del brazo.

Pasó la tormenta.

Cuando Pedro despertó, estaba acostado en aquella banca, frente a la puerta pequeña. Todos sus amigos estaban allí, a salvo, alrededor de una fogata, calentándose.

—¡Hermano! ¡Hermano! Al fin despertaste —gritó Andrés.

Pedro, un poco desorientado aún, preguntó:

—¿Cómo llegamos aquí?

Sus amigos se sentaron con él alrededor de la fogata y le contaron lo que había sucedido.

—Después de que desapareciste en el agua, intentamos mantenernos a flote. De pronto, vimos cómo unas luces diminutas, eran como insectos que brillaban, comenzaron a rodearnos y sentimos una gran paz. Luego, las luces se movieron en una dirección específica y decidimos remar tan fuerte como podíamos para seguirlas. Cuando, de pronto, se detuvieron, y aunque no podíamos ver nada aún, no sabemos cómo, pero Andrés estaba seguro de que allí estabas.

—Así que nos acercamos lo más rápido que pudimos y cuando vimos una figura gracias al brillo de las pequeñas luces, me lancé al agua. Y te encontré. Estabas aferrado a una roca firme —dijo Jacobo.

—Cuando te subimos al bote salvavidas, nos aferramos a la roca con unas sogas y esperamos.

Odio esperar… —pensó de nuevo Pedro.

—En cuanto la tormenta se calmó, remamos hasta la orilla y un hombre llamado Juan, que estaba acampando en una cueva cerca de allí, nos ayudó a salir hasta este lugar y nos dio ropas nuevas para que nos cubriéramos del frío —añadió el hermano menor de Jacobo, llamado también Juan, el menor de todos.

—Fue una suerte que el agua te arrastrara hacia aquella gran roca —dijo Andrés.

Pedro reaccionó de forma extraña.

Se levantó tan rápido como pudo y corrió hacia la puerta pequeña, que estaba a unos cuantos metros de distancia, tomó la manija de la puerta y jaló con fuerza.

Sigue cerrada…

Juan, quien observó toda la escena mientras plantaba algunas flores a la orilla del camino, se acercó a él y le dijo:

—¡Oye! Recuerda, solamente puede abrirse cuando el que ha de venir haya llegado y llame al otro lado.

Pedro solamente lo miró confundido.

Nadie entendía lo que estaba pasando.

Su hermano y sus amigos corrieron hacia él.

—Pedro, ¿estás bien? ¿pasa algo?

—Sí, estoy bien, solo un poco confundido —respondió él.

Después de esto, todos se prepararon para volver a casa. Mientras tanto, Juan regresaba a su trabajo.

Cuando llegó a casa, su esposa saltó sobre él. Todos sus amigos, las familias de los demás marineros e incluso algunas de las personas que solían comprarles el pescado se habían reunido allí.

Pedro no solo era alguien conocido en la ciudad, también era respetado por muchos, por su integridad y bondad.

Él y su esposa solían cuidar de algunos pobres y algunas viudas. Una tarea que él había heredado de su madre, quien solía realizar actividades para ayudar a los más necesitados, y cuando ella falleció debido a una enfermedad, Pedro decidió continuar con su labor.

—Todos estábamos muy preocupados por ustedes —dijeron todos, casi como si fueran un coro.

—Gracias por cuidar de mis hijos —añadió la madre de Jacobo y Juan.

Ya en privado, Pedro abrazó a su esposa y se quebró a llorar.

—¿Cómo está tu mamá? —preguntó.

Su esposa lo miró y en su rostro se dibujó una tenue sonrisa.

—Está mejor.

—Pero eso no es lo más increíble... No creerás lo que pasó esta mañana.

—Temprano me sentía tan abrumada por la preocupación de que ustedes no aparecían que decidí salir a caminar un poco para respirar. Mientras caminaba, sin darme cuenta, llegué a aquel lugar del que me habías hablado, en donde está la puerta pequeña de las leyendas.

—Me senté en la banca que construiste con tu padre y, de pronto, un hombre que estaba allí trabajando me habló. Me preguntó si yo también estaba esperando a que llamaran a la puerta. Le conté que no conocía mucho sobre la leyenda, así que él tomó la tarea de contármela.

—¡Ja! Ese es Juan, el otro día me dijo que su trabajo es preparar el camino para cuando el que ha de llamar a la puerta venga —añadió Pedro.

—Sí, su nombre era Juan. Después de contarme la historia, me preguntó qué hacía allí.

—No sé por qué, pero me generó suficiente confianza, así que le conté sobre la enfermedad de mamá y él, muy amablemente, me ofreció presentarme a un amigo suyo que es médico. Su nombre es Lucas.

¿Otro médico? Más gastos… —pensó Pedro.

—Yo le dije que estaba bien, así que Juan fue a buscarlo y le pidió que viniera hasta nuestra casa a ver a mamá. El médico vino, la revisó, leyó los diagnósticos previos y me dijo que no me preocupara por nada; él se haría cargo de todos los costos del tratamiento.

—¿Qué? —exclamó Pedro.

—Sí —entre lágrimas, la esposa de Pedro siguió diciendo—. Yo le pregunté: “¿Por qué lo haría?” Y su respuesta te sorprenderá más a ti que a mí.

El médico me respondió:

—Hace muchos años, cuando aún era un niño, mi padre cruzó la puerta grande que lleva fuera de la muralla, nunca más volvimos a saber de él, así que mi madre lo perdió todo y, aunque teníamos un techo para vivir, muchas veces no teníamos nada para comer. No sé por qué, no lo recuerdo, pero casi a diario veníamos a esta misma casa, y la mujer que vivía aquí, y que veo en esa fotografía que está colgada en la pared, siempre nos daba algo para alimentarnos. Así que lo hago como agradecimiento.

Pedro levantó la mirada hacia la fotografía de sus padres.

Gracias, porque, aun sin estar aquí, siguen cuidando de mí.

Esa misma noche, mientras Pedro descansaba, no podía dejar de pensar en lo que creía que había visto mientras estaba hundiéndose en el agua.

Cerró los ojos.

Entonces lo recordó.

Mientras su cuerpo se hundía en el agua, Pedro vio cómo una luz descendía desde la superficie. Entonces, miró cómo la figura de una puerta se abría y de ella aparecía una silueta como la de un hombre que extendía su mano hacia él. En ese momento, Pedro se aferró tan fuerte como pudo a la mano de aquella figura y esta lo sostuvo con firmeza y lo llevó nuevamente a la superficie. Allí se dio cuenta de que había una gran roca a su lado. Se sostuvo de ella tan fuerte como pudo, mientras gritaba buscando una respuesta de aquel hombre que lo había sacado de las profundidades. Entonces, Pedro escuchó una voz que le dijo: “no tengas miedo” y quedó inconsciente. Lo siguiente que supo fue lo que le contaron sus amigos.

Después de recordar aquello, Pedro cayó profundamente dormido.

Toc...

Toc...

Toc...

Pedro abrió los ojos de golpe.

Ya era de mañana, el cielo estaba despejado y Pedro tenía que salir a ver si lograba recuperar algo de su barco. Pero, antes de hacerlo, fue a ver a Juan para darle gracias por presentarle a Lucas a su esposa.

Caminó hasta la puerta pequeña y se sentó en la banca a esperar.

Odio esperar…

Sonrió.

Quizá ya no tanto.

Pero Juan no aparecía.

Pasaron cerca de dos horas y Juan nunca llegó.

Bueno, supongo que ya esperé suficiente. Me voy. Mañana vuelvo —pensó Pedro.

Cuando caminó un poco, vio que, a un lado del camino, se encontraban las herramientas de Juan.

Quizá tuvo que irse de emergencia.

Al otro día, Pedro regresó… y al siguiente… y al siguiente… así por varios días más, pero Juan no aparecía.

Para ese entonces, Pedro decidió guardar sus herramientas mientras sabía qué había pasado con él.

Preguntó por todas partes y nadie sabía nada. Algunos incluso le respondían que quizá Juan había abandonado la ciudad por la puerta grande; sin embargo, Pedro sabía que él jamás haría eso.

Pasó el tiempo y Juan simplemente desapareció.

¿Y si llamaron a la puerta mientras yo no estaba y él la abrió?

Pedro volvió a ir a la puerta. Caminó hacia ella y, de nuevo, probó si finalmente estaba abierta. Pero nada pasó. Seguía tan cerrada como siempre.

Se sentó en la banca y cerró los ojos por unos minutos. Cuando volvió a abrirlos, notó cómo la maleza comenzaba a crecer entre las flores que Juan había plantado, cómo los arbustos habían perdido la forma hermosa que tenían por ramas que crecían en todas direcciones.

Entonces recordó las herramientas de Juan.

Como su barco de pesca había sufrido graves daños durante la tormenta, permanecería en reparación por algún tiempo, así que Pedro disponía de varios días libres. Por su parte, su suegra iba recuperándose poco a poco de su enfermedad, gracias a la ayuda de Lucas, lo que también había aligerado las responsabilidades de su esposa.

Así que Pedro volvió a casa, tomó las herramientas de Juan y le pidió a su esposa que lo acompañara.

Aunque él podía hacer el trabajo pesado por sí solo, no tenía la delicadeza para cuidar de las bellas flores que Juan había plantado. Así que la ayuda de ella era idónea para ese tipo de tareas.

Juntos se dirigieron a aquel lugar.

Recogieron las hojas, podaron los arbustos, arrancaron la maleza e incluso Pedro reparó algunas de las lámparas que estaban allí para alumbrar el lugar durante la noche.

En los siguientes días, su hermano Andrés, Jacobo y Juan, y otros amigos carpinteros, los hijos de José, se unieron a ellos.

Juntos construyeron un pequeño rancho, con una mesa y algunas sillas, con la idea de que las familias pudieran reunirse en ese lugar a almorzar al aire libre.

Entonces, Pedro se sentó junto a su esposa en aquella banca y contempló la puerta, de la que su papá tantas veces le había hablado en ese mismo lugar.

Ahora entiendo por qué le gustaba tanto venir aquí.

Los años pasaron. Las flores crecieron. Los arbustos cambiaron de forma cientos de veces. Vinieron los hijos, los nietos, amigos fallecieron, otros se fueron de la ciudad por la otra puerta, y nunca más los habían vuelto a ver. Pero desde entonces, Pedro y su esposa nunca dejaron de preparar el camino.

—Abuelo, ¿por qué todos los días nos traes a este lugar? —preguntó el mayor de sus nietos.

—¡Qué aburrido! ¿Por qué nada más no nos acercamos y tocamos muy fuerte la puerta para que quien esté del otro lado la abra y ya? —dijo el más pequeño.

—¡Así no sirve! —respondió su hermana mientras recolectaba unas flores.

El ahora anciano Pedro solo sonreía…

De pronto, una dulce voz a lo lejos dijo:

—Pedro, trae a los niños, la cena ya está servida.

La esposa de Pedro, junto con su hija y su yerno, estaban preparando la comida en el rancho que hace años Pedro y sus amigos habían construido. Mientras tanto, él jugaba con sus nietos cerca de la puerta.

—En seguida vamos.

Pedro corrió, haciendo una carrera con sus dos nietos varones, mientras la niña se quedó un poco atrás; ella estaba más preocupada por llevarle algunas flores a su mamá para decorar la mesa.

Entonces:

Toc… Toc… Toc…

¿Qué fue eso? —la niña se detuvo.

Toc… Toc… Toc…

—Abuelo, creo que llaman a la puerta —gritó.

Pedro se detuvo. Toda la familia la escuchó.

Durante toda su vida había esperado este momento. Por fin había llegado.

Poco a poco todos se acercaron hasta la puerta. Mirando a Pedro con lágrimas en sus ojos, su esposa le dijo:

—Ve, ábrela.

Pero Pedro recordó las palabras de su padre:

Ojalá sigas siendo un niño cuando suceda; así te será más fácil cruzarla…

Se agachó. Tomó a sus tres nietos, los abrazó, y les dijo:

—La razón por la que los traigo a este mismo lugar todos los días, es porque, cuando el que ha de venir llame a la puerta, solo quienes tengan el corazón de un niño la podrán abrir. Así que vayan. ¡Abran la puerta!

Entonces, los tres niños pequeños se acercaron tomados de la mano hasta la puerta, el mayor de ellos tomó la manija y jaló. Por fin la puerta se abrió.

Una luz cegadora cruzó el umbral, y de pronto una figura como de un hombre cruzó agachado y cuando se levantó, dijo:

—No tengan miedo.

Pedro reconoció inmediatamente aquella voz.

Era el hombre que lo había salvado de morir ahogado.

Aquel hombre se acercó y miró a Pedro con ojos de amor.

—Gracias por esperar y cuidar el camino que Juan comenzó. Pero ya no es necesario que lo cuides más, porque ya he llegado y cenaré contigo.

In a faraway city, surrounded by a great wall, lived a man named Peter.

He was a fisherman, as his father and grandfather had been before him.

Life forced him to grow up too soon. He was barely twenty-five years old and had already lost both his parents. His father had died when he was ten, and his mother when he was fifteen. Yet he had also found love. He married young and, together with his wife, raised his younger brother, Andrew.

Everyone in the city knew him.

He was a man of strong character and admirable resilience in the face of adversity. No matter how bad the fishing had been, at the next day’s dawn, Peter always came back to try again.

The wall surrounding the city had only two exits. The first was a gigantic door that remained always open. Anyone could cross through it.

In fact, many people abandoned the city through that door and were never heard from again. Because of this, some whispered that they had died, while others claimed they had been taken as slaves in distant cities.

Though, in reality, no one knew whether other towns even existed, for through that door people only went out; no one ever came in.

The second door, on the other hand, was small. In the city there was an old saying about it: “it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for someone to cross through that door.”

It was so small that only a child could barely pass through it. Yet it remained always closed.

No one in the city knew a single person who had crossed it. Not even the oldest among them knew what was on the other side.

However, there was an old legend. It was said that, one day, someone would knock from the other side. And only then would those who had remained waiting be able to open it and pass through.

When Peter was a child, his father used to take him to the small door. There, they would sit on a bench they had built together in front of it, while Jonah told his son the old legend.

Peter, like any child, had no intention of sitting still to wait: while his father gazed at the door, he ran from one side to the other, playing until he was completely exhausted.

One day, when little Peter was finally worn out, he walked over to Jonah and said:

—Dad, I hate waiting. Why don’t we go knock on the door? Maybe there’s already someone on the other side who can open it.

His father looked at him with tenderness, smiled, and replied:

—Do you think no one has tried? I’ve heard of people who have even attempted to force it open, and not even that worked. So all we can do is wait, even if you hate it. I trust that, one day, the One who is to come will arrive, and if we wait for him, we will be able to open it… I hope you’re still a child when it happens; it will be easier for you to cross through.

One day, Peter’s mother-in-law fell ill. His wife was doing everything she could to care for her, but they needed medicine that the doctor had prescribed.

Those weeks the fishing had been poor. An intense heat wave had lowered the level of the lake, and the nets came back emptier every day. The little Peter managed to sell barely covered the household expenses, much less the cost of the medicine.

Peter was desperate.

To find a moment of calm, he decided to go for a walk. He wandered the streets with no particular destination until, almost without realizing it, he saw that bench in the distance.

I haven’t been to this place in years. Not since my father passed away —he thought.

He stood still for a few seconds, gazing at the place.

He would have known what to do.

So he walked over to the bench and sat down.

He took a deep breath.

Fifteen years have passed and that door is still closed.

He looked down.

I hate waiting… but I don’t know what else to do.

—Hey! You, the one sitting over there, could you hand me the pruning shears?

Peter looked up, not sure who was speaking, and from the middle of the bushes lining the path that led to the small door, a man appeared holding a large knife, trimming them.

—Of course! —Peter replied.

He immediately stood up, picked up the pruning shears, and brought them to the man.

—Sorry for coming in without permission, I went out for a walk and used to come to this place with my father when I was a child. I didn’t know it belonged to anyone.

—Don’t worry, it’s not mine. I’m just the one who prepares the way —the man replied.

—My name is John, nice to meet you. Do you also wait for someone to knock on the door? Many people come here to do that. Although most get tired quickly and end up leaving.

—Honestly, I’m not sure. I used to do it with my father. He waited his whole life to be able to open it —Peter replied.

—And why do you prepare the way? Do you know when the one who will knock on the door is coming?

—No, but the way must be ready for when He comes.

The way must be ready for when He comes… He…

Peter went home.

The weather forecast said that a storm would move into the city that night for the first time in a long while. Although Peter didn’t particularly care, he still needed to go out and try to catch something. They needed the money.

So he and his crew prepared their boat and set out.

The water was calm; it didn’t seem like anything could go wrong. However, the further they ventured into the lake, the more Peter began to notice how the wind felt stronger and how it was rapidly changing direction. Little by little the sky darkened. The fog began to block their view of what was around them.

The waves began to break over the deck of the boat and chaos took over everything. Ropes coming loose, things falling, shouts that couldn’t be understood; communication among the crew became impossible.

Quickly, in the middle of all the chaos, Peter had to organize the evacuation. His brother Andrew was on the boat and he had to make sure he and the other men were safe. His father had died in a shipwreck during a storm.

So Peter ordered everyone to abandon the boat and get into the lifeboat.

While they were getting ready to release the lifeboat, one of the sailors, James, the son of Zebedee, an old friend of his father, fell into the water.

Peter, without hesitating, jumped in to rescue him. He managed to get him into the lifeboat, but as he did, a huge wave struck.

And Peter was left adrift.

Alone in the water, fighting the waves with what little strength he had left, Peter was desperate. He could see nothing but water. He swam in every direction, trying to find something to hold onto, but before he could, his strength gave out.

I’m sorry, Dad. I won’t be there either when someone knocks on the door… The door…

Peter began to sink.

Suddenly, a firm hand, warm despite the cold, grabbed him by the arm.

The storm passed.

When Peter woke up, he was lying on that bench, in front of the small door. All his friends were there, safe, gathered around a campfire, warming themselves.

—Brother! Brother! You finally woke up —Andrew shouted.

Peter, still a little disoriented, asked:

—How did we get here?

His friends sat with him around the campfire and told him what had happened.

—After you disappeared in the water, we tried to stay afloat. Suddenly, we saw tiny lights, like glowing insects, begin to surround us and we felt a great peace. Then the lights moved in a specific direction and we decided to row as hard as we could to follow them. When they suddenly stopped, and even though we still couldn’t see anything, somehow Andrew was sure you were there.

—So we got as close as we could and when we spotted a figure by the glow of the small lights, I jumped into the water. And I found you. You were holding on to a firm rock —said James.

—When we pulled you into the lifeboat, we held on to the rock with some ropes and waited.

I hate waiting… —Peter thought again.

—As soon as the storm calmed down, we rowed to shore and a man named John, who was camping in a cave nearby, helped us get to this place and gave us fresh clothes to keep us warm —added James’s younger brother, also named John, the youngest of them all.

—It was lucky that the water carried you toward that great rock —said Andrew.

Peter reacted in a strange way.

He got up as fast as he could and ran toward the small door, which was just a few meters away, grabbed the door handle, and pulled with all his strength.

Still closed…

John, who had observed the whole scene while planting some flowers along the edge of the path, walked over to him and said:

—Hey! Remember, it can only be opened when the One who is to come has arrived and knocks from the other side.

Peter just looked at him, confused.

No one understood what was happening.

His brother and his friends ran toward him.

—Peter, are you alright? Is something wrong?

—Yes, I’m fine, just a little confused —he replied.

After this, everyone got ready to head home. Meanwhile, John returned to his work.

When he arrived home, his wife threw herself at him. All his friends, the families of the other sailors, and even some of the people who used to buy fish from them had gathered there.

Peter was not only well known in the city, he was also respected by many for his integrity and kindness.

He and his wife used to care for some of the poor and some widows. A task he had inherited from his mother, who used to carry out activities to help those most in need, and when she passed away from an illness, Peter decided to continue her work.

—We were all so worried about you —everyone said, almost as if they were a choir.

—Thank you for looking after my sons —added the mother of James and John.

Already in private, Peter embraced his wife and broke down in tears.

—How is your mother? —he asked.

His wife looked at him and a faint smile crossed her face.

—She’s better.

—But that’s not the most incredible thing... You won’t believe what happened this morning.

—Early on I was feeling so overwhelmed by the worry of you not showing up that I decided to go out for a short walk to get some air. While I was walking, without realizing it, I ended up at that place you had told me about, where the small door of the legends is.

—I sat down on the bench you built with your father and, suddenly, a man who was working there spoke to me. He asked if I was also waiting for someone to knock on the door. I told him I didn’t know much about the legend, so he took it upon himself to tell me the story.

—Ha! That’s John, the other day he told me his work is to prepare the way for when the One who is to knock on the door comes —Peter added.

—Yes, his name was John. After telling me the story, he asked me what I was doing there.

—I don’t know why, but he made me feel comfortable enough to trust him, so I told him about my mother’s illness and he very kindly offered to introduce me to a friend of his who is a doctor. His name is Luke.

Another doctor? More expenses… —Peter thought.

—I told him it was fine, so John went to find him and asked him to come to our house to see my mother. The doctor came, examined her, reviewed the previous diagnoses and told me not to worry about a thing; he would take care of all the costs of the treatment.

—What? —Peter exclaimed.

—Yes —through tears, Peter’s wife continued—. I asked him: “Why would you do that?” And his answer will surprise you even more than it did me.

The doctor replied:

—Many years ago, when I was still a child, my father crossed the great door that leads outside the wall, and we never heard from him again, so my mother lost everything and, although we had a roof over our heads, many times we had nothing to eat. I don’t know why, I don’t remember, but almost every day we would come to this very house, and the woman who lived here, who I can see in that photograph hanging on the wall, always gave us something to eat. So I do it out of gratitude.

Peter looked up at the photograph of his parents.

Thank you, because even without being here, you are still taking care of me.

That same night, while Peter was resting, he couldn’t stop thinking about what he believed he had seen while he was sinking in the water.

He closed his eyes.

Then he remembered.

While his body sank in the water, Peter saw how a light descended from the surface. Then, he watched as the figure of a door opened and from it appeared a silhouette like that of a man who stretched out his hand toward him. In that moment, Peter held on as tightly as he could to the hand of that figure, and it held him firmly and carried him back up to the surface. There he realized there was a large rock beside him. He held on to it as tightly as he could, while shouting, searching for a response from the man who had pulled him up from the depths. Then, Peter heard a voice that said: “do not be afraid” and he lost consciousness. The next thing he knew was what his friends had told him.

After remembering all of that, Peter fell into a deep sleep.

Knock...

Knock...

Knock...

Peter’s eyes flew open.

It was already morning, the sky was clear, and Peter had to go out to see if he could salvage anything from his boat. But before doing so, he went to find John to thank him for introducing Luke to his wife.

He walked to the small door and sat down on the bench to wait.

I hate waiting…

He smiled.

Maybe not so much anymore.

But John was nowhere to be found.

Nearly two hours passed and John never showed up.

Well, I suppose I’ve waited long enough. I’m leaving. I’ll come back tomorrow —Peter thought.

When he walked a little further, he noticed that, on the side of the path, John’s tools were lying there.

Maybe he had to leave in a hurry.

The next day, Peter came back… and the day after… and the day after that… for several more days, but John never appeared.

By then, Peter decided to keep his tools safe until he found out what had happened to him.

He asked everywhere and no one knew anything. Some even suggested that perhaps John had left the city through the great door; however, Peter knew he would never do that.

Time passed and John simply vanished.

What if someone knocked on the door while I was away and he opened it?

Peter went back to the door. He walked toward it and, once again, tried to see if it was finally open. But nothing happened. It was still as closed as ever.

He sat down on the bench and closed his eyes for a few minutes. When he opened them again, he noticed how the weeds had begun to grow among the flowers John had planted, how the bushes had lost the beautiful shape they once had, with branches growing in every direction.

Then he remembered John’s tools.

Since his fishing boat had suffered serious damage during the storm, it would be under repair for some time, so Peter had several free days ahead of him. For her part, his mother-in-law was slowly recovering from her illness, thanks to Luke’s help, which had also eased his wife’s responsibilities.

So Peter went home, picked up John’s tools, and asked his wife to come with him.

Although he could handle the heavy work on his own, he didn’t have the delicacy to tend to the beautiful flowers John had planted. So her help was perfectly suited for that kind of task.

Together they made their way to that place.

They gathered the leaves, pruned the bushes, pulled out the weeds, and Peter even repaired some of the lamps that were there to light the place at night.

In the following days, his brother Andrew, James and John, and some carpenter friends, the sons of Joseph, joined them.

Together they built a small shelter, with a table and some chairs, with the idea that families could gather there to share lunch outdoors.

Then Peter sat down beside his wife on that bench and gazed at the door, the one his father had spoken to him about so many times in that very same place.

Now I understand why he loved coming here so much.

The years passed. The flowers grew. The bushes changed shape hundreds of times. Children came, then grandchildren, friends passed away, others left the city through the other door and were never seen again. But from that day on, Peter and his wife never stopped preparing the way.

—Grandpa, why do you bring us to this place every day? —asked the oldest of his grandchildren.

—How boring! Why don’t we just walk up and knock really hard on the door so whoever is on the other side will open it already? —said the youngest.

—That’s not how it works! —his sister replied while picking some flowers.

The now elderly Peter just smiled…

Suddenly, a sweet voice in the distance said:

—Peter, bring the children, dinner is ready.

Peter’s wife, along with their daughter and son-in-law, were preparing the meal in the shelter that Peter and his friends had built years ago. Meanwhile, he was playing with his grandchildren near the door.

—We’ll be right there.

Peter ran, racing with his two grandsons, while the little girl stayed a little behind; she was more concerned with bringing some flowers to her mom to decorate the table.

Then:

Knock… Knock… Knock…

What was that? —the little girl stopped.

Knock… Knock… Knock…

—Grandpa, I think someone is knocking on the door —she shouted.

Peter stopped. The whole family heard it.

All his life he had waited for this moment. It had finally come.

Little by little, everyone gathered around the door. Looking at Peter with tears in her eyes, his wife said:

—Go, open it.

But Peter remembered his father’s words:

I hope you’re still a child when it happens; it will be easier for you to cross through…

He knelt down. He gathered his three grandchildren, hugged them, and said:

—The reason I bring you to this same place every day is because, when the One who is to come knocks on the door, only those with the heart of a child will be able to open it. So go. Open the door!

Then, the three small children walked hand in hand toward the door, the oldest among them took the handle and pulled. At last the door opened.

A blinding light crossed the threshold, and suddenly a figure like that of a man came through bent down, and when he stood up, said:

—Don’t be afraid.

Peter recognized that voice immediately.

It was the man who had saved him from drowning.

That man came closer and looked at Peter with eyes full of love.

—Thank you for waiting and for tending to the path that John began. But it is no longer necessary for you to tend to it, for I have arrived and I will dine with you.

Un día, un niño pequeño descubre su sombra.
No entiende por qué siempre está allí.
¿Por qué nunca se va?

Con su mirada fija en ella
y pasos torpes,
intenta huir,
corriendo lo más rápido que puede
para dejarla atrás.

Pero la sombra sigue allí.

El niño llora.
Tiene miedo.
La sombra lo persigue a todas partes.

Quienes lo miran
no pueden hacer más que sentir ternura.
Saben que nunca escapará de ella.
Y algún día él también lo sabrá.

Él también reirá,
porque más temprano que tarde entenderá
que su sombra se forma

One day, a little child discovers his shadow.
He cannot understand why it is always there.
Why won’t it ever leave?

With his eyes fixed on it
and clumsy little steps,
he tries to run away.
As fast as he can,
hoping to leave it behind.

But the shadow remains.

The child begins to cry.
He is afraid.
The shadow follows him everywhere he goes.

Those who watch him
cannot help but smile.
They know he will never escape it.
And one day, he will know it too.

He too will laugh,
because sooner or later
he will understand
that his shadow is formed
when The Light meets him.

And as long as The Light remains,
his shadow will never leave his side.

And now he can play with it.

Hace exactamente un año, el 26 de junio de 2025, publiqué mi primer ensayo en Substack. Este daría paso a 122 publicaciones (sin contar esta) hasta el día de hoy. 100 ensayos/artículos + 22 poemas. En dos idiomas.

Durante este último año, escribir se volvió una parte importante de mi vida. Era un sueño que Dios había puesto en mi corazón desde tiempo atrás, pero que había pospuesto por falta de tiempo y otras razones.

Pero hace un año decidí hacerlo. Comencé el año tomando un curso de redacción, que me ayudó a tener un método, entender la estructura de un texto corto y, posteriormente, formar mi propia identidad. Sin embargo, mi intención nunca fue solo escribir por escribir. Si lo iba a hacer, debía haber algo más. Algo que le diera un sentido real.

¿Cuál iba a ser mi razón para escribir?

Después de orar por algún tiempo, la respuesta fue: Hechos 20:24.

“pero mi vida no vale nada para mí a menos que la use para terminar la tarea que me asignó el Señor Jesús, la tarea de contarles a otros la Buena Noticia acerca de la maravillosa gracia de Dios.” (Hechos 20:24 NTV)

De eso se trata Pensamientos. Una búsqueda constante de preguntas, paradojas, datos interesantes e historias personales, con las que las personas puedan identificarse y que me permitan compartir con otros la maravillosa gracia de Dios.

Así que, para celebrar este primer aniversario, quise hacer una lista con 10 cosas que este camino me ha dejado.

01 El comienzo

El primer ensayo que escribí lo llamé Una fe débil. Quizá no es el mejor que he escrito, pero creo que ejemplifica bastante bien el corazón de Pensamientos, ya que, mucho de lo que he escrito comenzó a partir de la duda, que es de lo que se trata este escrito. En él reflexiono sobre la duda, la fe y el conocimiento de Dios, y la tesis es que nuestras dudas no descalifican nuestra fe. Muchas veces son la chispa que nos acerca más a Él.

02 El texto que más disfruté escribir

Aunque me cuesta elegir solo uno, creo que elegiría: Señor, no puedo. En este comparto lo que Dios me ha enseñado a través de mi milagro favorito en la Biblia: el hombre sanado por Jesús en el estanque de Betesda.

Lo que hizo que escribirlo fuera tan interesante fue poder imaginarme la escena completa: el estanque, el ruido del agua, la multitud que iba y venía, la mirada desesperanzada de los enfermos, y Jesús entrando en escena conmovido por lo que veía. Este tipo de narraciones se ha vuelto uno de mis estilos favoritos para escribir. También disfruté mucho estudiar el contexto histórico de la historia, ya que esto hizo que se volviera más real aún.

03 El texto que más me costó escribir

Hubo varios que tuve que borrar y comenzar de nuevo, pero si tengo que elegir uno, sería sin dudas: Yo soy así. Cuando comencé ese artículo, tenía la conclusión a la que quería llegar clara desde el principio. Pero no sabía cómo llegar hasta ahí. Tenía una respuesta para la que no encontraba la pregunta. Y ese es un problema tan frustrante como “la página en blanco.”

Quienes han leído mis artículos quizá habrán notado que normalmente comienzo proponiendo una pregunta que voy abordando desde diferentes puntos de vista hasta aterrizar en lo que dice la Palabra de Dios, pero en este caso, aunque sabía lo que la Biblia decía, no tenía claro el recorrido para llegar ahí.

04 El proyecto del que me siento más agradecido

Aunque fue el que más me estresó, porque lo quería hacer desde hacía tiempo atrás, este sería: Camino hacia la Cruz, una serie de ocho reflexiones que publiqué durante la Semana Santa 2026.

Este proyecto lo trabajé diariamente durante casi dos meses. Fue el más completo que he hecho, porque narré con mis propias palabras y de forma muy resumida cada una de las historias, busqué imágenes para colocar dentro del texto, hice los gráficos para Substack e Instagram, y estudié mucho los Evangelios para no decir nada que no fuera fiel a lo que las Escrituras cuentan, aunque me di algunas libertades con detalles menores.

Me siento agradecido no solo por lo que significó escribirlo, sino por lo que espero que sea en el futuro. Mi esperanza es poder reeditarlo durante este año y publicarlo como un pequeño libro de reflexiones de Semana Santa el próximo año.

05 Una pequeña victoria

Esta sin duda alguna sería la publicación de uno de mis poemas en el issue de verano de que se publicará este próximo 01 de julio.

Este poema será mi primera y hasta ahora única publicación fuera de Substack. Pero lo que lo hace más especial es lo que significa para mí. Yo soy ingeniero químico y tengo apenas un año escribiendo. Siempre pensé que la creatividad no era una virtud que yo tuviera. Pero ver mi poema publicado junto al trabajo de personas seguramente muchísimo más experimentadas y talentosas que yo, que han estudiado y dedicado su vida a escribir, me emociona porque me enseña que Dios puede hacer cosas más grandes de las que jamás soñamos.

06 El texto más personal

Aunque hay muchos de mis ensayos en los que usé experiencias personales como ejemplos, y que mientras escribía algunos de ellos lo hice con un nudo en la garganta, creo que en esta categoría elegiré un poema: Tu voluntad. El primer poema que escribí en mi vida.

Lo escribí en las notas de mi celular mientras esperaba mi vuelo de regreso a Costa Rica después de una temporada fuera del país. Realmente, no planeé que sonara bien, o que se convirtiera en un poema, solo escribí lo que necesitaba decirle a Dios en ese momento. Y creo que eso lo hace tan personal, porque, aunque luego lo edité para publicarlo, esa nota “cruda” aún sigue en las notas de mi celular.

07 Lo que aprendí sobre escribir

Realmente, este año ha sido una temporada de constante aprendizaje, pero quizá lo más importante que aprendí fue que las cosas no tienen que salir perfectas desde el primer intento. Al principio luchaba con eso, quería que desde el primer borrador todo tuviera sentido y no tuviera que editarlo más. Peor aún fue cuando comencé a traducir mis escritos al inglés, porque me daba miedo que no sonara natural, que el texto perdiera significado en la traducción, principalmente con los poemas.

Pero poco a poco entendí que las imperfecciones son parte del proceso y le dan identidad. Hoy puedo convivir más sanamente con ellas, sin juzgar la forma en que escribí antes con el conocimiento y la sabiduría que pude haber ganado con el tiempo. Aunque sigo siendo un poco perfeccionista.

08 Lo que aprendí sobre Dios

Este año aprendí a confiar en Él en medio de las temporadas de cambio e incertidumbre. Aprendí que la escritura es un don que Él me dio y que yo necesitaba comenzar a desarrollar. Aprendí a buscarlo más intencionalmente en las cosas que a veces damos por sentadas, y aprendí a no escribir desde mi propia inteligencia, sino a confiar en la dirección del Espíritu Santo.

Pero quizá lo más importante de este año es que he podido disfrutar de mi relación con Dios mucho más de lo que lo había hecho antes. Y creo que escribir tuvo mucho que ver con eso.

09 Lo que espero del próximo año

Nunca he sido bueno viéndome a mí mismo hacia el futuro, así que no tengo metas tan claras. Solo espero poder seguir compartiendo lo que el Señor me va enseñando y que, de alguna forma, siga siendo de bendición para otros.

Sin embargo, estoy intentando ser más intencional en alcanzar algunas metas: actualmente estoy escribiendo, editando y recopilando poemas con la intención de formar un poemario que pueda ser publicado. También tengo el proyecto de hacer un libro corto de devocionales con mis reflexiones de Semana Santa. Y por qué no, plantearme condensar algunos de mis artículos en un libro. Algo que algunos amigos me han animado a hacer.

A partir de aquí, quisiera incluir también algunos escritos que he leído durante este año y que han impactado mi vida de distintas maneras.

Personalmente este artículo me impactó porque, aunque muchas veces, somos conscientes de este tipo de temas, muy pocas veces lo abordamos como algo espiritual, cuando realmente todas nuestras decisiones en la vida deberían ser espirituales, incluso aquello en lo que gastamos nuestro dinero. Considero que es un tema que la Iglesia debería preocuparse por dar más visibilidad.

Exactly one year ago, on June 26, 2025, I published my first essay on Substack. This would lead to 122 publications (not counting this one) to date. 100 essays/articles + 22 poems. In two languages.

During this past year, writing has become an important part of my life. It was a dream that God had placed in my heart long ago, but that I had postponed due to lack of time and other reasons.

But a year ago I decided to do it. I started the year taking a writing course, which helped me develop a method, understand the structure of a short text, and later, form my own voice. However, my intention was never just to write for the sake of writing. If I was going to do it, there would have to be something more. Something that gave it real meaning.

What was going to be my reason for writing?

After praying for some time, the answer was: Acts 20:24.

“But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God.” (Acts 20:24 NLT)

That’s what Pensamientos (Thoughts) is all about. A constant search for questions, paradoxes, interesting facts, and personal stories that people can relate to and that allow me to share God’s wonderful grace with others.

So, to celebrate this first anniversary, I wanted to make a list of 10 things that this journey has taught me.

01 The beginning

The first essay I wrote was called A weak faith. Perhaps it’s not the best I’ve written, but I think it exemplifies the heart of Pensamientos quite well, since much of what I’ve written began with doubt, which is what this essay is about. In it, I reflect on doubt, faith, and the knowledge of God, and the thesis is that our doubts don’t invalidate our faith. Often, they are the spark that draws us closer to Him.

02 The text I most enjoyed writing

Although it’s hard for me to choose just one, I think I would choose: Lord, I can’t. In this one, I share what God has taught me through my favorite miracle in the Bible: the man healed by Jesus at the Pool of Bethesda.

What made writing it so interesting was being able to picture the whole scene: the pool, the sound of the water, the crowd coming and going, the hopeless looks of the sick, and Jesus entering the scene, moved by what he saw. This type of narrative has become one of my favorite writing styles. I also really enjoyed studying the historical context of the story, as this made it feel even more real.

03 The text that was hardest for me to write

There were several I had to delete and start over, but if I had to choose one, it would undoubtedly be: That’s how I am. When I started that article, I had the conclusion I wanted to reach clear from the beginning. But I didn’t know how to get there. I had an answer for which I couldn’t find the question. And that’s a problem as frustrating as writer’s block.

Those who have read my articles may have noticed that I usually start by proposing a question that I approach from different points of view until I arrive at what the Word of God says, but in this case, although I knew what the Bible said, I was not clear on the path to get there.

04 The project I feel most grateful for

Although it was the one that stressed me the most, because I had wanted to do it for a long time, this would be: Road to the cross, a series of eight reflections that I published during Holy Week 2026.

I worked on this project daily for almost two months. It was the most comprehensive project I’ve ever done, because I narrated each story in my own words and in a very concise way, I found images to include in the text, I created the graphics for Substack and Instagram, and I studied the Gospels extensively to ensure I didn’t say anything that wasn’t faithful to what the Scriptures say, although I did take some liberties with minor details.

I feel grateful not only for what it meant to write it, but for what I hope it will become in the future. My hope is to be able to re-edit it this year and publish it as a small book of Easter reflections next year.

05 A small victory

This would undoubtedly be the publication of one of my poems in the summer issue of , which will be published this coming July 1st.

This poem will be my first and, so far, only publication outside of Substack. But what makes it so special is what it means to me. I’m a chemical engineer, and I’ve only been writing for a year. I always thought creativity wasn’t one of my strengths. But seeing my poem published alongside the work of people who are surely much more experienced and talented than I am, who have studied and dedicated their lives to writing, moves me deeply because it shows me that God can do greater things than we ever dreamed of.

06 The most personal text

Although many of my essays use personal experiences as examples, and I wrote some of them with a lump in my throat, I think I’ll choose one poem for this category: Your will. The first poem I ever wrote.

I wrote it in my phone’s notes app while waiting for my flight back to Costa Rica after some time abroad. I didn’t really plan for it to sound good, or for it to become a poem; I just wrote what I needed to say to God at that moment. And I think that’s what makes it so personal, because even though I later edited it for publication, that “raw” note is still in my phone’s notes app.

07 What I learned about writing

This year has truly been a season of constant learning, but perhaps the most important thing I learned was that things don’t have to be perfect from the first try. At first, I struggled with that; I wanted everything to make sense from the very first draft and not need any further editing. It was even worse when I started translating my writing into English, because I was afraid it wouldn’t sound natural, that the text would lose its meaning in translation, especially with the poems.

But little by little I understood that imperfections are part of the process and give it its identity. Today I can live with them more healthily, without judging the way I wrote before, thanks to the knowledge and wisdom I’ve gained over time. Although I’m still a bit of a perfectionist.

08 What I learned about God

This year I learned to trust Him in the midst of seasons of change and uncertainty. I learned that writing is a gift He gave me and that I needed to begin developing. I learned to seek Him more intentionally in the things we sometimes take for granted, and I learned not to write from my own intellect, but to trust in the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

But perhaps the most important thing about this year is that I’ve been able to enjoy my relationship with God much more than I ever have before. And I think writing had a lot to do with that.

09 What I expect from next year

I’ve never been good at planning for the future, so I don’t have very clear goals. I just hope I can continue sharing what the Lord is teaching me and that, in some way, it will continue to be a blessing to others.

However, I’m trying to be more intentional in achieving some goals: I’m currently writing, editing, and compiling poems with the intention of creating a collection that can be published. I also have a project to write a short devotional book with my Holy Week reflections. And why not consider condensing some of my articles into a book? Something some friends have encouraged me to do.

From here on, I would also like to include some writings that I have read during this year and that have impacted my life in different ways.

• The last words of a brother

This has perhaps been the essay that has resonated most deeply with me this past year. In it, writes about the passing of a close friend, and she does so with a faith and literary beauty that left me speechless.
