It’s about time we finally got some real talk in world of horse sports.

Danielle Waldman (formerly Danielle Goldstein aka “Flying Feathers”) was up for the task after retiring from the five-star international show jumper lifestyle. Dani secured a spot at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as part of the first-ever Israeli show jumping team. She rode in her first grand prix at 16 years old. Over the course of her 30-year career she’d represent Israel in the European Championships, World Championships, and take home individual wins on the Longines Global Champions Tour, among other accolades.

But she gave up competing at the top of the sport in 2022. At the time, she said she wanted to explore other passions, from fashion and travel to media. Being married to Alan Waldman, a former show jumper himself and known these days for his robust horse breeding, training and sales operation in the Netherlands, Dani was never far from horses or the sport.

In 2024, she launched Horse Bytes, a sports-centric online show on YouTube which gave weekly updates on who won what and where. The show has evolved quite a bit over the years, moving on from straight highlights focused on the results, to allowing Dani do what Dani does best — show some flair and flex her authority and understanding of the ins and outs of this complicated sport.

These days, the show also drops a lot of F-bombs. But we’re here for it.

Heels Down caught up with Dani this summer to learn more about how she’s found her voice in the world of sports commentary and what’s on the horizon for her.

Hi Dani! So it’s been a minute since we’ve talked to you last. You were a previous cover model for us on Heels Down Magazine, when you were still riding at the top of the sport. Give us a quick update on what you’ve been up to since then?

I retired from competitive riding over five years ago and have done a number of different things on the broadcasting/media side of the sport. I hosted a highlights show on YouTube and I’ve also taken part in the docuseries “Faultless” which is now streaming on Amazon Prime/Roku worldwide. In addition, I did a bit of sports commentary at events and have a scripted series in the works as well.

Most recently I changed the direction of Horse Bytes to be short, entertaining and educational recap videos to help engagement with the sport.

What made you want to consider being a commentator for the sport of show jumping?

I’ve always liked the media side of things and despite not riding anymore myself, I’m still a huge fan and felt my knowledge could at least try to contribute to the industry in a way that might help bring new fans to the sport.

It feels like you've really found your calling! I appreciate how you're shaking it up and giving us your real, authentic self and a very no BS perspective on what's happening at these five-star competitions. Does it come naturally to you? Or did it take some time to find your 'voice' in this role?

It’s funny because for the past few years I’ve really tried to make things professional and formal in order to legitimize the sport but it turns out, the best thing for horse sport is honesty…and honesty means speaking about the sport the way we all do at home on our couches watching the livestream, or around the dinner table or in our group chats… I finally just took a leap of faith and decided to say it out loud, publicly.

It’s what we are all thinking and saying… might as well share it and hopefully impart some educational knowledge simultaneously.

What’s your favorite part of being a commentator?

You know, I find commentating helps clarify things in my own head. When I can sit and explain something, or articulate why a certain thing happened on a course, it helps me to really understand it—sometimes I wish I still rode because I think I’d be a better rider now because I’m able to articulate how and why things happen from all the commentating I’ve done. I love that clarity—it’s almost like I have an “ah ha” moment in my own understanding and that’s very rewarding after doing this sport for over 30 years.

Tell us more about Horse Bytes and how this new platform has grown. Whats your goal for the show?

Horse Bytes began as a highlights show—similar to Sports Center but after a long pause and now over the last six weeks we shifted gears entirely to be a short-form video platform on Instagram and TikTok geared towards honest, raw and entertaining content that merges competition footage, kiss-and-cry reactions, and human emotion with funny memes and movie clips to drive the action home. It’s meant to provide the main takeaways from an event or current affairs that keep the viewer engaged and hopefully will draw new viewers into our world.

What’s the response been like from fans of your commentary?

So far the response has been wild! The videos are sometimes getting over 100k views with comments and shares over the thousands. It’s been so amazing to see and hear the reaction from both people within the industry and new followers how relatable the content is and how it’s exactly what they were thinking watching the events. We seem to have really, unexpectedly, struck a cord and it’s been so cool to witness.

We knew it was a huge gamble with the profanity and honest commentary but we (myself and my partner Horse Network) really felt the industry needed a shakeup and could handle the unorthodox approach. It’s certainly something very different for the sport and some old-school conservatives are quite wary and offended, but Rolex has collaborated on a number of the posts, so I think that’s a pretty good sign that we might actually have something.

We’re fresh off the World Championships at CHIO Aachen, and gearing up for LA28, of course. Any hot takes you want to share? Thoughts or predictions going forward?

Ooof, that’s a hard one… I think the World’s was a great representation of our sport and with shows like “Faultless” getting into the mainstream, I hope our sport can really take a leap into new media territory with bigger exposure, new audiences and hopefully new fans!

Are you still riding at all yourself? Do you envision you’ll ever return to the sport?

Ah, the million-dollar question. I did start riding a bit six months ago, but currently I don’t have any real plans to return to high level sport. I occasionally have a notion of aiming for LA but that’s usually a fleeting thought. Never say never but currently I’m just enjoying doing Horse Bytes and keeping my toes in the water.

What else have you been up to lately?

My biggest project, outside of Horse Bytes, is the scripted show I’m developing with a friend of mine but that’s a real passion project that I’ll share at a later date.

And keeping it true to Heels Down Happy Hour, what’s your favorite summertime beverage these days? Cocktail or mocktail?

Ooooh, I’m loving a mezcal on the rocks with a squeeze of orange or a classic Hugo Spritz this summer!

Looking for a low-impact way to help your horses build core strength? Jess and Doug Payne from Payne Equestrian installed a simple, yet permanent series of raised poles to create a walking and proprioception exercise that can be done in-hand or under tack.

The idea was to create a simple way to help build strength and posture awareness that wouldn’t require a heavy workload or steady fitness. These poles can be done by any horse in the barn, no matter what job they do, and will help them be aware of their own body while building muscular fitness slowly over time.

Doug and Jess used raised eight-by-eight wood square poles placed about 32 inches apart along a walking path from the barn to their arena. They used asphalt millings as the footing on top (where the horses would walk over) to ensure it will drain well and stay tight without being slippery in all weather conditions.

“We used four six-by-six square poles in the arena, because the horses really respect them and will jump around it,” explained Doug.

On Episode 133 of the Heels Down Happy Hour Podcast, Jess explained how they used large, square 4-sided poles as training tools in their home arena. They’re the perfect tool for footwork exercises, from testing your eye to see a distance to skinny trot-pole sequences for fitness and endurance. Plus they hold up better than the standard jump pole. (You can hear all about how and why the Panyes’ invested in these on Ep. 133.)

Those arena poles led to the idea of creating a walking pole exercise. Jess was inspired by a video she saw on social media where another farm in Europe created a fixed set up for the walking exercise.

“They would walk the horses over the poles for core work, and the horses would really have to pick up their legs,” Jess described. “It motivated us to do something.”

They decided to build their own along the walkway to and from the barn so it was convenient to walk over them every day, making it a staple exercise for every horse.

The square poles are screwed into a 2x4 under the dirt, so they are secure and won’t turn over. On top of the dirt, Doug installed some landscaping fabric to keep the grass from growing through. Then a layer of stone dust and finally, asphalt millings on top.

“It’s awesome for the horses who tend to be tight in the back at the start of the ride. Or the types that want to rush, it forces them to slow down,” Doug said. “It was easy to create and cheap, and now it’s something we can incorporate every day.”

“Faultless” premiered earlier this summer and is expected to roll out on Amazon Prime this month. Made in partnership with a longtime supporter of the sport, Rolex, the episodic series takes viewers behind the scenes and into the world of show jumping, featuring 14 five-star riders across world-class venues like CHIO Aachen, the Dublin Horse Show and Spruce Meadows.

The series was dreamed up by brothers Ben Asselin and Kyle Koss — Asselin being a longtime show jumper himself and Koss being the executive producer. The project began with just a skeleton crew, according to a news release, with early shoots happening around Tryon, N.C., and Wellington, Fla., during the height of the competition seasons there.

Among the riders featured is American show jumper Lillie Keenan. She allowed camera crews to follow her from horse shows to her home barn to even her home with her family in New York City, from where she learned to ride from a young age.

Whether you’re a fan of shows like “Drive To Survive” (how could you not) or “Full Swing,” it’s hard not to be hooked by storylines in “Faultless.” It offers a similar view into the sport as the F1 and PGA series mentioned. You don’t even have to be an equestrian to enjoy it. No matter what you think you know about riders like Steve Guerdat or Darragh Kenny, their passion (and frustration) is in full view in some of these episodes. It goes to show just how much time, effort and endless work goes into producing a well-functioning team at this elite level. It’s not just about one rider or one horse — a team of people are making decisions daily on how to support the horses, plotting a schedule for competition and more. All the while maintaining relationships and commitments at home, like children, spouses, the farm, the business and more.

The scenes showing riders face-off in the arena are exciting and as nail biting as watching the real thing. But it’s those behind-the-scenes moments that kept me coming back.

As an American rider, I’m familiar with Lillie and her support team of McLain and other top Americans in the sport. But getting to see Europeans like Willem Greve, Martin Fuchs and Christian Kukuk at home and in training unlocked narratives and personalities I really didn’t know much about beyond the headlines and world rankings.

And speaking of the 2026 World Championships, you’ll learn a lot about the individual gold medal winner Steve Guerdat in “Faultless.” Guerdat has many wins to his name over the years, and that time and dedication to the sport has taken a toll on his body. Guerdat outlines the difficulties he’s faced physically in this series. You can see it in him, the way he trains in the gym, and even in the saddle, as he’s fighting to stay healthy enough to keep riding at the top levels of the sport.

Having that insight from “Faultless” going into his incredible performance at Aachen this summer just made me want to root for him that much more.

“Faultless” is worth the watch! Even my non-horsey husband says it might not be “Full Swing” but it was cool nonetheless.

It’s been a hot, hot summer here in Florida, with weeks of extended heat advisories where the “feels like” temperature, which combines the temperature outside plus the level of humidity, is reaching triple digits.

It’s sweltering. But also dangerous, for people and for animals.

There are a lot tips and tricks to keep the horses cool in this kind of environment. For my personal herd, it means staying inside under fans during the hottest hours of the day, with lots of midday rinses and a regime of supplements from April to October to ensure we’re sweating normally. Turnout schedules swap to overnight.

It’s also truly our “off season” where we don’t haul out much for lessons or shows if we can help it. But sometimes moving the horses is unavoidable, be it for vet visits or extended stays off-property (I don’t even want to say it out loud and jinx myself, but for hurricane evacuations). And I like to be prepared.

This year, I upped my trailer prep game for summertime hauls, just in case. In 2024, when my home in Tampa Bay was walloped by not one, but two, major hurricanes, I evacuated my horse Mikey to a friend’s farm in Ocala, a couple of hours away. We were lucky to have that opportunity but it also meant several hot, stuffy hours for my horse in the trailer. I made some recent investments (cheap ones!) that I think will make a difference should I have to load up again in August or September.

Portable Misting Fans

I scoured the camping section of Amazon for a few hours one night, looking for supplies that are portable, durable and made for outdoor environments. That’s where I found this $39.99 battery-powered, waterproof misting fan. There are a lot of knock-off, made internationally, options for items like these, so it’s important to do some research on what brands are worth the investment. This one had good reviews, much better than its competitors. I’ve used it twice in the trailer so far, for two 2.5-hour hauls and the battery life is impressive.

It’s easy to fill the container with water. There are several fan speeds and different options for misting (for example, a continuous mist and then an every so often mist). It has a built-in light source. And a clip to hang it - perfect for the trailer. My horses can be bored and playful, so I reinforced its position in the trailer with some bailing twine and had no issues.

I also think it will double as a handy fan to have at horse shows, when you’re baking in the sun in between classes. The fan came with a USB charger, so I could even charge it from the truck if I needed to.

It surprisingly moves a lot of air for its size. And the misting is strong and cool. I’m glad I bought it!

Camping Shower

I was fed an ad on Instagram recently of a equestrian brand selling a “portable” hose. It was marketed as an option for horse shows - just drop one end into a bucket of water, turn it on, and out pumps the water out of a shower head on the other end. It was kind of pricey, so I started to do some research to see if I could something similar that maybe wasn’t an equestrian brand.

Leave it Amazon to give me lots of options. These types of battery-powered portable showers are also popular in the camping world. I can see why!

The small, battery-powered base sucks water from any source, perfect for a sink or bucket. I thought it was smart to keep in the truck on the off chance I end up stuck with a flat. I can drop one end of the shower into my water tank in the trailer and be able to hose the horses off safely inside the stalls of the trailer. Like the fan, it also charges via USB. It cost $29.99.

The shower has surprisingly decent water pressure for such a simple device made of plastic. The shower had has two settings. It’s a great option to have when you need something in a pinch.

So these are the latest additions to my gear I keep in the trailer, that aid in comfort and give me peace of mind in case of an emergency. How long will they last? That remains to be seen. But if I use each of them once in a trailer trip this year, I think it was money well spent.

It started with intrigue.

Videos kept coming across my feed of European riders on beautiful Andalusians and Lusitanos, completing trail-like obstacle courses with flying changes and dressage tack. They were sharply dressed in European cattle ranch garb. And they were competing in a discipline I’d never heard of before.

Working Equitation is well known in countries like Spain, Portugal and Italy. It combines classical dressage with the tradition of field and ranch work seen in southern Europe. There are four phases: Dressage, Ease of Handling, Speed and Cattle Handling. Similar to eventing or a combined test, a rider is judged and given a score in each of these phases, and then those scores are added up into a final score.

I was mystified by those first videos I saw. How cool to find another style of riding that rewarded the basics of a good foundation with balanced gaits, correct movement and lateral work and combine it with encouraging good training for horses to be handy, obedient and brave. If I had the chance, I knew I wanted to give it a try.

The presence of the sport in North America is small, but not non-existent. In fact, it’s starting to gain steam. The United States Working Equitation Association hosts rated events across the country. In 2022, the nonprofit was accepted as a member country of the World Association of Working Equitation.

Living in Florida, I’m lucky to have so many incredible equestrian venues, which hosts educational and competitive horse events of all styles, at all levels, year-round. But only in the last year did I start seeing Working Equitation opportunities beginning to pop up - first as clinics and then finally… a schooling show.

At this point I had invested in learning more. I bought a book: the “Working Equitation Training Manual: 101 Exercises for Schooling and Competing” by Ali Kermeen. It gave me a good understanding of the basic framework of each phase of the competition, good tips about understanding the rules (there are a lot of them) and some exercises to try at home to improve my skills.

So I started practicing. Mostly working on dressage basics like side-passing over ground poles, rein-backs, turn on the forehand, turn on the haunches, square halts. And then occasionally riding around our home arena carrying a long pole. It felt a little like jousting at first … but then I got the hang of it.

I’m a lifelong English discipline rider, from doing the hunters, jumpers and equitation as a junior to eventing and dressage as an adult amateur. Working Equitation for sure felt a little out of my depth. But after my off-track Thoroughbred had a career-ending (eventing) injury a few years ago, my mind was opened by the chance to try new things. We started going to obstacle courses, stripping our training down to the basics as we refocused on balance and posture for a healthier way of moving. Completing these obstacles courses as outlined in the Ease of Handling phases of Working Equitation didn’t seem so farfetched, if even it still felt a little foreign.

The two-day schooling show loomed large. On a whim I entered. What did I have to lose?

So I hooked up the horse trailer and loaded my former eventer and a 4-year-old sales horse I have in (a Connemara gelding), both of whom I entered in the show. I had memorized the dressage tests for each division (performed in a 20x40 arena, not unlike low-level eventing). When we rumbled into the venue, I saw that some obstacles were already set up for us to school the day before.

I had zero expectations of myself and my horses at this horse show, outside of trying to learn as much as I could and hopefully having fun along the way. The likelihood of being eliminated seemed high. There are a lot of rules, many I didn’t fully understand just from reading and watching videos.

But I’m so glad I went.

I entered horses in different divisions. My eventer, Magic Mike, competed in the lowest level, Level 1, which is performed only at the walk and trot. There is just one dressage test and one obstacle course phase, called Ease of Handling. Shoot For The Moon Cash, my sales horse, was entered in Level 2, Novice A, the next level up. This level require walk-trot-canter in the dressage and obstacle phases, and also included a speed round.

In the Ease of Handling phase, you must complete the obstacles in order without crossing your path. Each obstacle is scored like in a dressage test. You are rewarded for square halts, balanced gaits, showing true changes in bend, on top of smoothly and obediently completing each obstacle. In the speed round, the dressage rules go out the window. You just have to complete the obstacles without knocking anything down or refusing them.

Both my horses placed well, with great comments from the judges. That even came after a few rule flubs — turns out there is a right and wrong way to hold a garrocha pole. Luckily the judge, Polly Limond - USAWE “S”, USDF L-Grad with Distinction, was kind enough to offer feedback, and even did a course walk with competitors before classes began on the second day. It was a fun, safe and low-key atmosphere to try something new.

Magic Mike was the brave horse he’s always been, and ended up Reserve Champion of his division, and Shoot The Moon Cash was the star of the show - he was Grand Champion of his division, winning the dressage phase, tying for first in Ease of Handling and having the second fastest speed round. The show staff made it extra fun when they allowed each competitor to pick a song to play during their speed event. I had stenciled a thunderbolt Glittermarx Ponies quartermark on Cash’s rump, so naturally, “Thunderstruck” felt like the appropriate choice.

I highly recommend Working Equitation for anyone who is curious. We met a group of very nice ladies who are really trying to bring the sport to life here in Florida. Anyone from any type of riding background could have fun doing it. Riders in Western and English tack competed against each other, on horses from all breeds and backgrounds.

What more could you want in an equestrian sport?

By now the news of Dover Saddlery’s demise has infiltrated the feeds of equestrians everywhere. The longtime horse sport retailer announced last week that it was closing stores nationwide, and liquidating its inventory with going-out-of-business sales.

Across social media, there wasn’t a lot of love left for what has long been a staple in the horse shopping industry. In 2022, Dover announced it was acquired by Promus Equity Partners, LLC, a Chicago-based private equity company. Leaders from said private equity overlord at the time detailed in a press release that they were “not in the business of running companies, rather collaborating as active board members,” and were interested in charting the brand’s growth into the future.

Perhaps they did, in a short term. The following year, Dover announced it was open to franchise brick & mortar opportunities. In 2025, Dover began selling SmartPak supplements. Last summer, Dover made a big announcement: the company had committed to building a brand new 12,740-square-foot flagship store at the World Equestrian Center Ocala, in the recently debuted The Shoppes Off 80th.

But in April, Promus Equity Partners offloaded Dover onto another private equity firm, Gordon Brothers, after its lender spun it off in a fire sale, reporting on the deal disclosed. Gordon Brothers, based in Boston, wasted no time in shuttering stores and sparking the going-out-of-business sales we’re seeing nationwide right now.

It remains unclear what will happen to that flagship Florida store. But if history is any indicator, the Ocala store was nothing more than a press release and some renderings (remember the very short-lived Dover store at Tryon International Equestrian Center?). We also don’t know what will happen to Dover’s web commerce platform, but all signs point to the end of Dover as we know it is near.

The rise and fall of Dover Saddlery is nothing special in the grand scheme of things – it’s been happening for years in the retail industry, as e-commerce platforms continue to outpace the brick & mortar format, especially with newer players, like Chewy, who are quicker to adapt to consumer preferences. And more recently, Dover is just another example of private equity’s invasive leech into so many industries these days – bleeding a business dry until there’s no equity left, and selling off the dry bones before the burial. It’s a simple yet well-known strategy straight out of the private equity playbook.

Posts across social media have condemned Dover and the suits that own it for leaving small businesses in the lurch. Clothing makers, saddle pad companies, boot designers and more sent inventory to be sold in Dover stores only for invoices to never be paid. That’s perhaps the saddest narrative of all in this story.

Through the anger and the disappointment is a sadness that lingers when I think of a world with no Dover Saddlery in it. Dover too, was once a small business, just a store for horse enthusiasts in Wellesley, Mass., started by brothers Jim and David Powers in 1975. It grew to become a household name. Small equestrian businesses could 100% say they’d made it when Dover chose to carry their goods in their stores and online.

For many of us, it wasn’t the physical stores that bring back wholesome memories, but the catalogs. Thick, glossy pages with seemingly endless inventory of everything one could want or need for their horse obsession. Dover catalogs became the ultimate guide to my Christmas wish lists over the years. It was a good day when I found it in the mailbox. And as the brand moved away from printing, as much of the rest of the world did at that time, too, I found myself missing it.

I still have a stack of old catalogs. The latest are dated from 2017 and 2018. They still have images of Dover staffers on their own horses on the pages just behind the cover. Many covers were pinned up on my childhood walls and in the sacred spaces of the tack rooms I grew up in.

Before online tracking orders, I’d rush home from school and wait for the mailman, eager to see if they had a cardboard box with the green Dover Saddlery emblem stamped on it.

At horse shows, it was the ultimate compliment to be told my turnout was so good “I look like I walked off the cover of Dover.”

So while Dover’s demise couldn’t have come in a worse way, I’ll try to remember the brand for every great influence it had on me growing up. I’m glad Dover was there, and I know I’ll miss it.
