Dear Trig,

I’ve started this letter three times. The first version was angry, and the second sounded like a history paper. The third made me sound crazier than most people already think I am. Whatever. I’m going to let this one run free, and you can be the judge later. After listening to your podcast for so long, I believe you won’t judge, so here goes nothing.

I want to thank you for everything you’ve done with your show. By giving Clara Bellamy and Hemlock Falls a voice, you kept me going with my own research, which I think is the point, right? You don’t know me, or who I am (though I know you may have a clue after the last package I sent) but Clara Bellamy is my mother’s ancestor. Before my mother died ten years ago, she had quietly gained some traction of her own, trying to find out why Clara and many others vanished without a trace while life here went on as though they’d never existed. Like we live on one big rug that everything gets swept under when it’s not pretty enough to live on the surface. She never spoke to me about any of it. I only learned about it later, when I went looking for why she died, and why she kept a box of old notes and photographs hidden in the paneling of the dining hall out at our camp.

I caught her in there a couple of times, when my father was away. Playing the music that she also kept hidden in those same cigar boxes with pictures and notes, all of it spread out around her while she danced. I understand now that she was dancing to forget. To clear her mind of what she’d come to know. But I’m getting ahead of myself here.

I’ve listened to your first episode about how you found Clara over and over, and I don’t think the photograph that started this for you (and now your listeners) fell into your hands by accident, no matter how much you believe that package landed at your door by mistake. The Sno-Pass Serial Killer case was closed and Jacob Aldridge was already in prison. Anyone opening that package would have seen a photo that old and ignored it. You dug deeper. You saw her face and her name and made it your mission to know her. The universe led you here, to this. To me writing you today, on the edge of finally pulling up what this town has spent over a hundred years burying. Do you believe in kismet? You should. Either way, you set off a chain of events that has made the deeds of this place impossible to ignore, not just for those of us here, but for people all over. You gave Clara a voice. The hard part is that she’s only the tip of the iceberg.

The box I sent you last week isn't everything. Not even close. When I sent it, I told myself it was. But I kept thinking about chickening out, and I realized the only way I'd actually go through with my plan was to put the rest of it in someone else's hands. So, sorry, but I'm bringing you all the way into this. Because once you've seen it, I can't un-send it, and once I can't un-send it, I can't stop. My plan is going to expose the people who are still part of this, all these decades later. I've put in more copies of everything I've gathered over the years, and I hope you'll see what I see, so we can share the rest of it with the World once I'm done.

Some of the information I have belonged to my mother, and some to my father. He passed recently, in a freak accident, and I never would’ve found what he’d kept hidden otherwise. I’m sure that’s a good thing. Some of it belonged to my grandmother, and to her mother before her, and so on. Not handed down with any purpose. More like, inherited. I think my mother wanted to expose what she found, hoping I wouldn’t have to inherit the burden too, and that’s what got her killed.

Yes, I said killed. Most of our relatives, friends, former camp attendees, and the town were led to believe she died of a cancer recurrence. I don’t believe that. I was there. I heard the fights. I saw how he hid her from the people who wanted in and wanted to help. I distinctly remember her first cancer diagnosis. I was six and thought cancer was a death sentence. It was a big deal. The “Cancer” that she died from? I know she never saw a doctor after their last bad fight. It was only a couple of days later that my father told me her cancer was back. I am no doctor but I know it takes a doctor for a diagnosis. After she died, I started going to places I wasn’t supposed to, and one of them was the attic of the Old Lodge. They meet there, Trig. I found so much tucked away in those little attic closets that I had to keep sneaking back for more. The strange part is, I’m not sure the ones who still meet there even know what’s kept above their heads, or whether it’s still there at all. They just carry on burying everything ugly about this place while they shine everyone on with whatever passes for the perfect utopia they want to see.

Sunday landed with a thud, lacking Saturday’s curiosity but carrying twice the weight. Or maybe that was just the wine. Mara claimed her territory between the front and back, her head throbbing to the rhythm of the room. The locals who drifted in had already committed to the day, snapping open heavy newspapers or unrolling wrinkled crossword puzzles across tables without a glance. The tourists dragged their feet, the manic energy of the weekend fading into a slow, lazy crawl, like a story winding down to its final line: The End.

Mara couldn’t afford the luxuries of her patrons that morning. The Towne Pump was a one-woman show, and this was a classic case of Sunday morning coming down.

When she’d gone to bed last night, in the best bed she’d ever slept in, she’d set her alarm for 5:00 so she wouldn’t miss the morning’s 5:40 bread delivery. People would have lost their minds. Now the early chaos was done, the pastries stacked, the counter wiped clean, and Mara gripped the edge of the worn wood, waiting to see what the morning would dump on her next.

The bell above the door chimed, and Grace stepped inside carrying her sunglasses in one hand and wearing the faintly composed expression of someone who had slept better than expected and was mildly surprised by it.

“Gooooood morning!”

“Morning,” Mara replied as she approached the seat Grace had taken at the counter, pouring her coffee on autopilot.

“You look suspiciously functional,” Grace said.

“So do you.”

“I own a bed and breakfast.”

“Lucky you. I own a café.”

“Touché.”

Mara smiled despite herself, the expression coming easier than it had yesterday, which was the strange part. There was no awkwardness this morning, none of the careful navigation of something new and unexamined. A conversation from the previous evening had settled into place between them, and Grace arriving felt less like an event and more like a continuation of something already in motion.

Grace rested her forearms on the counter. “You sleep alright?”

“Maybe a little too well.”

“Wonderful.”

Mara wiped a stray coffee ring from the wood. “How’s the happy couple?”

“Lila made it to breakfast,” Grace said, leaning in slightly. “Everett appeared briefly, announced he was never drinking again, and disappeared back upstairs.”

“That tracks. I’d have done the same thing if I could have.”

“I get that.”

Despite the weight of last night’s conversation, neither mentioned it again that morning. It had happened, and something else had happened alongside it —two quiet realities sitting between them like the coffee.

The bell chimed again, and a pair of tourists entered carrying a folded trail map. Grace stepped aside automatically while Mara answered their questions, pointed them toward the falls, explained the difference between the trailheads, and rang up two of the sandwiches everyone kept insisting were famous. By the time she looked back, Grace had wandered toward the end of the counter. She wasn’t behind it, but she was close enough to be out of the flow of traffic, watching the room the way she always did.

“You know,” Mara said, refilling a sugar caddy, “you don’t actually have to be here.”

Grace lifted an eyebrow. “I was invited.”

“By whom?”

“Come on, now.”

“When?”

“Last night.”

Mara paused. “I don’t remember that.”

“I think it might have been around our last bottle.”

“I’ll take your word for it.”

“Thank you.”

Mara laughed, and a few customers glanced her way before deciding to mind their own business. Grace smiled into her coffee.

For a moment everything felt unusually normal, which was precisely why Mara noticed Sherri Pigaux the second she walked through the door.

Sherri’s eyes shifted the way they always did, quick and comprehensive as they took inventory before she’d fully crossed the threshold. They swept the room, found Grace, found Mara, registered the distance and the ease between them, and moved on without changing expression.

“So cozy in here today,” Sherri said.

“Good morning,” Mara said. “The usual?”

“You know it!”

Mara reached for a mug while Sherri settled onto a stool, resting one hand flat on the counter with the posture of a woman entirely at ease who was anything but.

“You’ve been spending a lot of time here lately,” Sherri said, not looking at Grace, leaving no doubt about who the comment was for.

Grace looked up from her coffee. “You’re taking notes.”

“Just observant.”

“Wouldn’t expect anything less.” Grace answered, revealing nothing. She held her mug with both hands and waited, pleasantly, for whatever came next.

Sherri’s smile tightened just slightly, and then the bell chimed.

Sheriff D.B. Pigaux stepped inside, his gaze locking in on Sherri as something in Mara’s chest shifted. Yesterday she wouldn’t have noticed. Today she did.

His tomatoes had gotten ahead of him again. Jonas stood among the vines, a wicker basket hooked over his arm, staring at a row of Sungolds that had apparently decided to ripen all at once. Three days. That was all it took. Just a little warmth and a splash of rain, and suddenly the vines looked like they’d been conspiring behind his back.

Traitors.

The tomatoes remained unmoved by the accusation. He plucked another handful and dropped them into the basket. People liked to say gardening was relaxing. It could be, but today it was anything but. He’d spent most of his morning feeling like he was negotiating with things that had already made up their minds. The chickens had escaped twice, the zucchini were actively attempting a hostile takeover of the herb beds, the birds had eaten half his strawberries. As for the tomatoes? They had apparently declared independence.

A distant growl drifted through the trees as Jonas glanced toward the driveway.

Mike Halverson and his mail truck. On time, as usual.

The truck barreled through the trees a second later, bouncing over the gravel as it crunched up the slope toward the house. Mike didn’t even wait for the brakes to catch before leaning his head out the window with that big, friendly grin of his.

“Got another one for ya.”

Jonas set down his basket. “Morning, Mike.”

The carrier disappeared into the back of the truck and returned with a dense, medium-sized box. He gave it a cautious shake before handing it over with the careful hesitation of a man who had been surprised before.

“No teeth this time,” Mike laughed. “Far as I can tell.”

Jonas laughed. The bear skull had been a genuine find, even if overly expensive. A Holocene specimen he’d pulled from an academic liquidation listing and opened right there in the driveway, rambling about provenance and regional wildlife tracking until Mike’s eyes had glazed over. It was the look of a man who had stopped understanding and started simply enduring. Mike had gone home and told his wife. His wife had told someone else. That was the thing about small towns. You told people one true thing and they turned it into folklore, until the myth was far more real than the fact.

These days Mike always took a moment with the packages before handing them over, a small private ritual of anticipation that Jonas had never commented on and never would.

That was how it worked, as far as Mike understood it. People found things. Arrowheads, fragments, the occasional piece of something older than it had any right to be, and they looked up Jonas Welker because Jonas was the person in Nightshade County who cared about that kind of thing. It was a reasonable assumption. It was also, in the loosest possible sense, not entirely wrong.

Mike paused, squinting at the return address. He flipped the box around and tapped his thumb against the label.

Jonas frowned and looked down. The return address was typed. Simple and ordinary.

Mercer Camp. Hemlock Falls, Washington.

“Don’t get much mail from up there,” Mike said.

Jonas looked at the label again. Not long, but long enough to make sure he’d read it correctly.

“You know it?” he asked.

“Sure. Old religious camp up past the falls. Been in the Mercer family forever.” Mike scratched the back of his neck. “Actually, the father just passed. Eli Mercer. Few months back. You didn’t hear about that?”

“I heard something,” Jonas said carefully.

“Wasn’t much of a story, I guess. Town talked about it for a week and then moved on.” Mike shrugged. “Quiet family. Kept to themselves.”

Jonas shifted the package beneath his arm and said nothing. His mind was already moving through the possibilities, none of them small, all of them requiring him to be somewhere other than this driveway.

“Someone finally dug something up out there?” Mike asked.

“Maybe,” Jonas said. “Maybe so.”

Mike shook his head with the fond exasperation of a man who had long since made peace with his most eccentric delivery stop. “Well. Hope it’s something good this time.”

“Me too,” Jonas said, and meant it more than Mike would ever know.

Mike climbed back into his mail truck and a moment later the engine growled back to life.

“See you next time, professor.”

Jonas lifted a hand. The truck disappeared down the driveway, and the garden fell quiet again.

Most packages came from other researchers, forum contacts, people who had stumbled across something they couldn’t explain and found his name attached to a post from three years ago. Oregon, Montana, Idaho, the occasional one from back east. Places far enough away that they existed mostly as postmarks and return addresses. Hemlock Falls was different. Not forum distance. Four miles down the road.

The package wasn’t addressed to Jonas Welker. None of them ever were. That was the point. The shipping label read GWIRITMT ARCHIVES. Nothing more, no podcast title, no personal name, forwarded from his Seattle address automatically. For years, that had been enough.

Most people who reached out were genuine. A handful were not. Years of quietly digging through forgotten disappearances, suspicious deaths, buried scandals, and small-town secrets had taught him that a little distance between his name and his work wasn’t paranoia. It was maintenance. The archaeology cover helped with that too. Researchers received strange packages. Nobody thought twice about it.

He looked at the box again. The local address didn’t bother him. People in Hemlock Falls knew the podcast. Some of them probably listened to it in their cars on the way to work without knowing the host lived four miles from their front door. Sending something to the archive address was the most ordinary thing a listener could do.

What wasn’t ordinary was that someone had felt they needed to.

Eventually he tucked the package beneath one arm and picked up the basket. Saturday mornings had their own shape. Garden, coffee, recording, mail. Not always in that order, not always all of them, but present in some combination that had become comfortable over six years without ever quite becoming rigid. He wasn’t a person who followed schedules. Not since his early retirement, not since Hemlock Falls. He was just a person who had found, slowly and without meaning to, that certain repetitions helped.

Still. For the first time in a long while, he found himself looking at the package more than the tomatoes.

The detached garage sat behind the house, tucked between a stand of cedars and the garden fence. Garage wasn’t really the right word anymore. At some point it had become an office, then a studio, then something in between. Shelves lined the walls, crowded with labeled archive boxes, books, photographs, newspaper binders, and enough recording equipment to convince visitors he knew what he was doing. A small wooden sign hung beside the interior door.

TRIG

His colleagues had given it to him when he left at forty, a retirement gift from the company he’d helped build, laser-etched on a piece of reclaimed cedar by someone who’d clearly put thought into it. Trygve was what his mother had called him, a good Norse name, she always said, as if that settled things. It hadn’t settled anything at school, where Trygve became Trig by the second grade through the patient, grinding force of other children’s convenience, and Trig it had stayed through nearly thirty-two years of passwords and business cards and conference name badges. When he moved to Hemlock Falls he’d quietly retired it along with everything else from that life, started going by Jonas, his middle name, the one that had always existed and never been used. The town knew him as Jonas. The podcast knew him as Trig. The colleagues he’d left behind in Seattle thought he was living somewhere outside Lisbon, which he had never exactly confirmed or denied. The sign knew all of it, which was precisely why he’d hung it here instead of anywhere anyone might see it. Not hidden exactly, but private. A reminder of the distance between who he’d been and what he was doing now, and how completely one had made the other possible.

The package sat on the corner of the desk while he made coffee. He ignored it. Mostly. The box stared at him anyway, so he deliberately turned it around so the return address faced the wall.

“That’s healthier,” he said to no one.

Hawthorne Manor revealed itself slowly through the towering pines.

Mara knew the house long before she knew the woman who lived inside it.

Everyone did.

Perched atop Grey Cliffs, the manor watched over the valley like a landmark from another era. Tourists photographed it. Locals measured directions against it. People spoke about it the way they spoke about the river or the mountains — less as a building than a permanent fact of the landscape.

Seeing it up close was something else entirely.

A glimpse of slate roof emerged first through the trees. Then the rotunda. Then the sweeping stone façade catching the last of the evening sun. The manor had been built by the Hawthorne family more than a century ago, a French-inspired chateau whose silhouette had become synonymous with Hemlock Falls itself. Grand without being ostentatious — every slate tile, leaded window, and carved stone detail chosen with remarkable restraint. Nothing competed with the landscape. The house appeared to rise from the bluff itself, as though Grey Cliffs had simply been waiting for it.

The gardens spread across the grounds in immaculate terraces, their reputation nearly as legendary as the house. Lavender, roses, foxglove, hydrangeas. Honeybees drifting lazily in the warm evening light. For generations, securing a stay at Hawthorne Manor had been considered a privilege. Anniversaries celebrated here. Proposals planned here. Honeymoons remembered here.

Mara pulled off the circular gravel drive and cut the engine.

She sat for a moment with her hands still on the wheel.

She wasn’t nervous. Not exactly. The truth was she didn’t get invited places very often. Not places like this. Most of her relationships existed across counters and tables. She knew everyone’s coffee order, their birthdays, their divorces, which kid had gone off to college and which dog had gotten loose, yet she rarely found herself on the other side of the invitation.

She glanced up at the warm lit windows.

Then she got out of the truck.

Grace opened the door before Mara reached it.

“Hi,” Grace said. Her smile was easy, unforced.

“Hi.”

Grace stepped aside. The warmth of the entryway rushed out. Garlic, roasting herbs, the low hum of something acoustic drifting from deeper in the house.

“You made it.”

Mara stepped inside. “You invited me.”

“I know.” Grace closed the door behind her. “But I wasn’t entirely sure you’d actually show up.”

“You seemed pretty sure.”

Grace’s smile shifted slightly. “I was hoping.”

The admission sat between them for a moment, unhurried.

Then Grace nodded toward the back of the house. “Come on. My Seattle friends are already on their second glass.”

“Should I be worried?”

“Probably.” Grace laughed over her shoulder as she led her inside.

The dining room sat at the rear of the manor overlooking the valley. High ceilings. Polished crown molding. A table set with an effortless elegance that managed to look less like careful staging, and more like the particular ease of someone who’d grown up knowing exactly how to put a room together.

The couple seated there stood immediately.

“Hello,” Lila said, stepping forward with the kind of warmth that didn’t require any introduction. “We finally get to meet you.”

Mara laughed softly. “That bad?”

“Not even a little.” Lila’s eyes were warm. “We’ve just heard so much.”

Everett offered a firm handshake beside her. “Grace has been incredibly selective.”

Mara caught Grace’s eye across the room as she picked up a crystal decanter and poured without comment, the picture of innocence.

“I definitely don’t like the sound of that,” Mara said.

Grace merely smiled and handed her a glass.

“You switched the wine,” Everett remarked, setting his glass back down on the linen runner.

Grace raised an eyebrow. “You noticed.”

“It’s noticeably better,” he said with a laugh.

“It’s different,” Lila interjected, shooting Everett a playful look.

Grace smiled, her gaze quickly turning toward Mara, “I’ll take either.”

Sitting back slightly, Mara observed the three of them. The realization hit her again, sharper this time. They didn’t look like guests merely occupying a space; they looked like people who belonged to it, operating with the easy, unshielded familiarity of genuine friends.

“So you’re the reason we’ve been getting better bread,” Lila said.

Mara blinked. “I’m sorry?”

“The sandwiches,” Everett said. “Grace started bringing them up a couple visits ago.”

Mara looked at Grace as she innocently sipped her wine.

“They’re seriously cravable,” Lila added.

Mara smiled. “You’re not far from the source, actually. Ballard. Ever heard of Tarte Bakery?”

Lila’s face lit up. “We’re going.”

“You ever miss it?” Everett asked Mara.

“Seattle?”

Lila and Everett both nodded.

“Sometimes… but not enough to go back.”

Lila nodded, “I get that.”

Lila and Everett surrendered just before eleven. Everett announced he’d had precisely one glass too many, Lila didn’t argue, and they disappeared toward the guest wing with the easy, heavy-lidded contentment of people who had taken exactly what they wanted from the evening. Grace and Mara drifted to the grand room without discussing it.
