although I wanted Abuja.

Well… I obeyed the clarion call three months back and settling in has been an experience of another dimension of adulthood; househunting, setting up the apartment, navigating a whole new environment, meeting new people and starting life again on a whole new level.

So, inbetween two broken phones with no means of communication whatsoever and starting over in a new city, I'm happy to write to you again.

Culture shocks

Every place I've visited in Nigeria has something peculiar to offer and here are some things that shook me about uyo.

No traffic: This was extremely strange at first but I'm getting used to it now and this is making me wonder how I survived Lagos/sango.

They obey traffic lights here: Their traffic lights here aren't for decoration and even without being told, the road users obey them. This one shook me in particular and here's why, I was in a bolt taking me to my destination and all of a sudden, the tricycle stopped and I was puzzled as to why we stopped because the road was free and then I asked and the rider told me that he stopped for the traffic light, I then looked up and saw the stop sign, omo shame wear me beret.

The roads are clean, wide and well networked: They have good road network here, everywhere is litter-free with designated trash points and no one is dragging for road space with other road users. The lagosian in me couldn't comprehend that at first but it slowly became my new normal.

The greeting culture in public transports: I'm still finding it difficult to adjust to this one because what's my business greeting other passengers like family when we're going to scatter in different directions whenever and wherever we alight? I enter and mind my business o, let them call me rude.

The language barrier: Coming from places where I've spoken and speak familiar languages (English, pidgin, Igbo, Yoruba and basic hausa), communication in uyo felt frustrating/confusing at first because I do not understand a word of their local dialect and I've had to awkwardly tell the locals that I do not understand and thankfully, they revert to english. The dialect is unfamiliar and my ears have never picked up something like this before.

Life is easy and laid-back: The hustle, bustle and noise that I've been associated with all my life are practically non-existent here.

That's all on culture shocks for now, I'll keep updating more as I keep discovering other things I find strange.

Riri the explorer

I've started exploring the city and I'm loving it so far.

<a class="image-link image2 no light and heat wants to finish me.

Life lately

If anyone had told me that I wouldn't have the time or mental strength to write or even read, I'd have thrown hands or thought the person was waffling but I'm in that phase right now and I've been humbled.

Life offline has been really tough, especially for me stepping in to run the family business and temporarily retiring my parents who have done a great job and left big shoes for me to fill. Inasmuch as I enjoy running the business and also as someone who loves structure and runs on one personally, customers are my biggest challenge and I don't think I'd like to directly deal with people in any other field/career I find myself in moving forward. But I think it's an environment and societal conditioning thing so I can't conclude yet.

The craziest thing in all of this is that I stopped dreaming big, I came to that realisation days ago and couldn't help but wonder how this place made me lose focus.

Divine pointed this out to me but I didn't process it until recently.

Death & wickedness

An event motivated this header and I'll narrate it to you.

I used to think that the days of family members swooping in like vultures to share the properties of a breadwinner was over not until yesterday, when I heard it play out in real life.

Earlier in the week on monday, news got to us that we'd lost a fellow igbo trader and he left behind a young wife and three equally young kids. The whole market was thrown in disarray and we didn't even know which was sadder, his death or the young wife and kids he left behind.

All for us to hear on Thursday morning which was yesterday to hear that the man's siblings were fighting for his properties with his wife and goods were being carried out from his shop into a waiting truck.

I stepped aside to process the information and I couldn't comprehend the level of wickedness and the real life African magic plot playing out. To say I felt pained is an understatement, cases like this make me wish I studied law.

This should serve as a warning to you, have a will in place whilst you're still alive plus adjustments can be made to the will until your death. This is to protect your family and all that you worked hard for, the world is wicked, family members inclusive.

Events that warmed my heart this week

An older woman on the bus turned to me and shyly asked if she looks good with the headgear she tied herself and I responded in the affirmative. She smiled again and the smile warmed my heart for no reason.

An uncle of mine (he doesn't deserve to be called my uncle) who regularly assaults his pregnant wife, assaulted her recently and his wife's brothers beat him mercilessly with the approval of both families. That one sweet me and my mummy die 😁

I'll stop here and I'm going back to bed, Good morning my people.

Important notice

Hi there, I'll be taking a break from writing to you this month because it's a really hectic month for us at the shop and I cannot juggle writing, handling the business and attending to other personal things that require my attention for now.

Rita

Hi there, I'll be taking a break from writing to you this month because it's a really hectic month for us at the shop and I cannot juggle writing, handling the business and attending to other personal things that require my attention for now. I used to think that I wasn't doing enough and then someone thousands of miles away from me randomly said that to me, oh wow!!!

That interaction reminded me of the lighthouse theory, do your thing authentically and the right people will see you and be drawn to your light.

The amazing concept of doing whatever you want and the whole world adjusting to it

Some people actually confirm the saying “you can do whatever you want”.

I met someone last week and curiosity led me to run a background check on him and I found out that this guy studied geology in school but transitioned to banking and works with a new generation bank.

Geology isn't in anyway related to banking, so what influenced his choice?

Is it the state of the country?

Is it passion?

Is it pressure?

I honestly cannot wrap my head around the career switch and this confims the saying that anyone can do absolutely what they want and no one can do anything about it except the person who took the step. This also reminds me of my unusual career path, a biotechnology degree and an aviation licence backed up by the desire of dreaming big.

Don't let anyone or anything box you, if you want to do anything positive, do it and don't look back nor seek external validation.

The cancerous nature of shallow minded people

Shallow minded people have cancerous ideologies and beliefs and they should be avoided at all costs.

Few days ago, I stepped out with my mum's younger brother (he isn't qualified to be called my uncle) and during the drive, I pointed at a business that's owned by someone I know and commented on how well he's doing and the next thing this man said blew my mind. He said in my dialect “who knows where he went to concoct his own juju” which implied that the business man was fetish.

I was stunned because he attributed the success of a person he neither knows nor has had any form of interaction with to fetish practices and also the fact that he unknowingly exposed his shallow-mindedness by implying that one cannot attain success without being involved in fetish practices. Can you actually imagine???

I'm sure you've come across people or someone like this and I maintain my stance on shallow-minded people being avoided at all costs.

Closing credits

This is the last newsletter of the year from me to you and I'm sincerely grateful to you my subscribers for always reading and giving meaningful feedback.

Thank you all very much and see you next year ❤️

A saturday in a trader's life

I’m writing to you tired and exhausted on a Friday night, I just got out of a really terrible traffic (courtesy of ndi ijgb and the terrible roads plus a nonchalant government).

Rita

I’m writing to you tired and exhausted on a Friday night, I just got out of a really terrible traffic (courtesy of ndi ijgb and the terrible roads plus a nonchalant government).

I’ve had one hell of a week, from a tout beating down the bus fare from an exploitative driver ➡️ to dealing with a psycho customer who wanted to kiss me in broad daylight ➡️ physical and phone consultations with the tailor for everyone’s clothes ➡️ navigating the frenzied crowd doing their Christmas shopping and hauling live animals and dangerously heavy bags of rice ➡️ sharing a seat with a mad man on the bus (my soul almost left my body when I discovered). I was much younger, I always wanted to go out to explore and just see places but mummy Rita told me to explore the family business which I did after so many failed efforts to make her see reasons why I should go. So I ended up embracing the major side of the family business and I fell in love with it in the process.

Here’s the plot twist, my mum recently started bugging me to leave the house or the shop and start going out and I’m super confused because what changed? You’re the same person that refused to let me go out when I really wanted to, now the desire has died and you want to resurrect it, as how na??? I’ve seen that there’s not really much to do outside asides from bills and overpriced stuff so embracing the comfort of my house is the way to go for me.

My parents have been moving shockingly weird lately and relaxing some rules or whatever and I’m wondering if something is wrong somewhere 🤔.

Closing credits

It’s a beautiful Saturday here and almost everyone is gaily dressed and decked in party clothes but what’s on my mind is how to avoid traffic which is almost impossible, manage difficult customers, get home in time and also how to haul my big shopping bags alongside my tired body.

And look what I found

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" 5am here and I can't sleep because the church beside my house is hosting an early morning program and that brings me to

Dysfunctional societal conditioning

People especially the older generation have been conditioned and to accept and adapt to societal/social abnormalities whilst actively defending it.

Here's the gist behind this, I was randomly talking, not complaining about how the church next to my house disturbs me and my family with their loud worship. (There are six churches on my street so you can imagine how much noise they generate and we have to deal with)

Then one older woman chips in and says “you are not even happy that you're surrounded by prayers and angels” and I lost it because ibo latun jasi? I still maintain my stance on disliking unoriginal/bulk new month messages, so do not be pissed if I do not respond or simply ignore.

Ifemelu's blog? A discovery

My favourite book is Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, but A broken people's playlist by Chimeka Garricks is a strong contender and it holds a special place in my heart too.

Ifemelu is my favourite book character and oh boy, that babe is a menace plus we share crazy similarities that make me feel like I'm reading about myself in a book. Crazy right?

Well, I'd always felt that the book ended too abruptly for my liking, like it was missing something or extra details, I just wasn't satisfied with that finish. To my greatest surprise and joy, I discovered recently that Iya Ibeji (Chimamanda) created Ifemelu's blog on her website and there she writes on societal issues in Ifemelu's voice and shares updates about her personal life with Obinze. I'm excited to have stumbled across the blog and I'd been reading the blog posts with huge smiles across my face.

That's so smart of Chimamanda and a part of me still believes that she wrote about herself in that book, because some details are just too real to be fiction plus they sync with some areas/details of her life.

Pressure

Pressure occurs in different forms and sizes, what you make out of it determines the impact.

This pressure thingy is something else, so recently I noticed an unusual pressure from deep within me to do better especially when I hear news or stories about people or acquaintances, especially people that I know doing extremely well and doing things beyond the norm.

It's so wild that whenever I see or step into impressive establishments, my mind starts racing with thoughts like

Who brought this idea to do this?

How did the individual build this business/organization from scratch?

What motivated this?

How did they get funding?

What did it take to do this?

Where did they begin?

And a whole lot of other things

Challenging the norm has always been my thing but this pressure feels different, like it's going to explode within me if it's not properly managed and i honestly do not know what to do with it yet.

Self-awareness

A blessing or burden?

I'll share my thoughts on this in the next edition, bye for now.

Weekend Notes

Hello there 👋

Rita

Hello there 👋

It's a beautiful and cool saturday morning here atleast before the terrible heatwave begins….

Jumping right in

As I promised in the last episode, the yaji I made was really good and peppery (almost too peppery for a pseudo-yoruba lady that I am) and it banged with everything I ate it with.

I'll drop an image of everything I used although you can tweak it to suit your taste buds which brings me back to the fact that cooking is dynamic and no one should be bashed because they didn't cook something the regular way.

Detty December

December is around the corner and events lined up but I'll not attend as usual because who I wan leave shop for? I have an extremely poor social life all thanks to the shop, business no go kill me, can I hear an Amen?

I love and enjoy live performances especially well arranged ones with a live instrumenal band and solid backup singers by artists like Johnny Drille, Dwin the stoic, Asa, A.G baby and the likes but I've never attended one. Shh, this confession is between us so 🤐

I remember making a promise to myself to always go out for social events, have fun, eat, drink and laugh but I didn't keep to that probably because of bad timing, work or something else. I really need to improve.

Unrelated: Did anyone of you watch A.G baby's recent live performance where he performed his song fuji with an orchestra? If you haven't, please do check it out because the performance was straight up beautiful and out of the box.

Never in my life did I ever imagine that the music genre “fuji” would ever be performed by an orchestra let alone be a hit performance due to its razz origin. I honestly want to see igbo highlife evolve better too.

The bastardization of the word “luxury”

Nigerians including me (I won't absolve myself of the blame) bastardize words a lot.

The most abused word at the moment and in this country is luxury.

The word luxury sounds rich and pleasing to the ears hence it's adoption but it goes beyond the pricetag because that’s what people see first, luxury is an exceptional and exclusive experience or service.

Now that's the latest buzzword amongst vendors and service providers who fleece people under this guise by slapping outrageous prices on basic goods and services. How can you sell something that you've not experienced or do not understand? That's the big question.

The funny thing is that this nonsense culture has spread across all sectors in this country and no one seems to care (maybe a few of us do).

I also think the reason why this culture of theft disguised under “luxury” thrives here is because

The spirit of mediocrity reigns supreme: No desire to do anything excellently well (make we do am anyhow, dem go manage am).

Classism and elitism: The typical I better pass my neighbor mentality that's unfit for a third world country like ours.

Docility and lack of consumer protection by the regulatory bodies.

Luxury stands out in excellence and delivery not mediocrity. Another word is aesthetics but that one is story for another day.

Randoms

I had more free time on my hands this week and I utilised it well by sleeping, reading and watching a series

What I read this week: Tales of an orobo kibo kibo by April ifunanya.

The memoir explores the complexities and baggage of navigating life as a plus sized lady in Nigeria whilst highlighting the topics: societal pressure, relationships, acceptance e.t.c

It's a pretty good read and I enjoyed reading it as I found it relatable in some ways.

What I watched this week: Unseen, a South African crime thriller that kept me glued to the comfort of my bed.

There's something quite distinctive about S.A movie series and it's the excellence in delivery, cinematography, plot, cast, realistic set design and location as well proper wardrobe styling. Everything just makes sense and so far, I've not come across any bad movie from their end that's to tell you how good they are.

To me, they're the Hollywood of Africa.

Here's a few recommendations

Marked

Unseen

Blood legacy

Kings of Jo'burg

Savage beauty

Blood and water

How to ruin Christmas

I'm done for today, enjoy the rest of your day.

Knock knock 👀

Is anyone here?

Rita

I honestly owe you an apology for disappearing without notice, life happened and I had to take a break to take care of myself and that lingered far longer than I expected it to but I'm back and I'm fine.

Where have I been? Hell and back

Coping/Recovery aids: Therapy, soy milk and okpa from that Enugu woman plus solid people by my side ❤️.

Navigating the 20's

The 20’s (my apologies to the 30's) is such a steep phase of life and I can confidently say that because I'm in it and I've had firsthand experiences of how fast things can turn in a minute.

First you're learning how to navigate being an adult whilst trying to balance schooling, friendships, relationships, graduation, life after graduating from school, growing into your life's purpose and all that, then somewhere in the mix, chaos is brewing and there's absolutely nothing you can do about other than face it heads on with no manual whatsoever or even expo from elder siblings (for people with no elder siblings like me), God help us.

Friendly advice ~ In the midst of the chaos, take a step back to breathe, recharge and enjoy the little joys as they come else you lose yourself in the mix.

The left-hand, what's the fuss about it?

So yesterday in church, an announcement/warning came up about those who use their left hands to drop their offerings into the offering box and I was genuinely puzzled because I didn't really get the point of the announcement and I had questions on my mind like

Is the left-hand not a body part too?

What happened to the left-hand?

What if the person has just one hand and the hand is the left, would the offering be rejected?

Some people are left-handed and the left-hand is their dominant hand, so does that mean that their offering would not be accepted?

We have left-handed people, right-handed people (this is common) and the ambidexters. If the left hand is seen as useless, why then do we have and and can't do without it? Or is it a culture thing because I know in multiple African cultures, the left-hand is seen as disrespectful but to me hand na hand, I no too care.

I genuinely do not seem to know what the fuss is about and if you can enlighten me, please do.

Despicable people and their enablers (idiots)

As a person, I'm not perfect and I try my possible best not to judge people but what I can do well is to call a spade a spade.

I don't know if you've noticed but there's a significant rise in despicable people and I do not know why or maybe my eyes are just getting opened to notice them which propelled me to research on “if terrible people know they're terrible” and the research showed that people like that are fully aware of their actions and they either justify it or simply just don't care.

As usual, you know there's a backstory to this.

There's this lady I've known since I was a kid in primary school, she sells food alongside her husband and they have no kids. So, last saturday, I saw this lady acting out of character and crying loudly in the middle of the market, then new filtered in my ears that her husband impregnated her live-in sales person, kicked her out of the the house she pays rent for and proceeded to arrest her because she was causing a scene (who wouldn't cause a scene in that kind of situation)?

Now, the annoying part was that the bile and vitriol was directed at her by idiots for bringing bringing in a lady to live with them whilst exonerating the man who's the architect of the whole ruckus.

I've seen or heard of cases like this and I cannot seem to believe that I live/share a society with people like this.

Closing credits

It feels good to be back but writing this edition stressed me out because my mind and brain suddenly went blank whilst writing and I had to pause for a long while before I continued.

I want to say a very big thank you to the people that motivated me and checked on me during my sabbatical. Covenant, Kiva, my darling Success, Abbietayo, Dee and as many of you that I cannot remember, thank you very much and I'm grateful that you still believe in my ministry of writing.

Useful but useless info: I'm making yaji (suya spice) today and I'll tell you how it came out in the next episode, byeeeeee.

Monday musings with Ri

Mondays deserve more spice than just stress

Rita

Hi there, how are you doing?

It's a slow Monday morning for me and so far I'm loving it, I woke up late and I'm home alone plus I burnt my breakfast because i was scrolling through IG (shhh, don't let my mummy hear you).

Let's get into the gist of the day

Weird names

This had to come first because it hit home and I thought we were already past the era of giving kids weird names but obviously not because…….

My cousin named her child “VANQUISH”, of all names for this woman to pick from and she picked vanquish. I couldn't be more grateful that I'm alive because the simultaneous events that took place during the first few months of the year felt like a bad dream.

It was so chaotic that I couldn't even see beyond the chaos and everything seemed to fall apart at the time, I had to learn to live one day at a time and look at me now smiling, happier and in a better place.

Trenches Salons

Inasmuch as I'm a sucker for growth and upgrades, some things and places are better left alone.

So, I went to make my hair earlier in the week at a salon close to the house and oh boy, the craftsmanship was good, fast and pretty cheap, not to forget the premium gist especially in yoruba. I just quietly exited the website after admiring.

P.s. The name of the dinnerware is “La boule”

Another one that happened this week was when I was admiring one nice lace fabric (I think I'm in my aunty era now because what do you mean I'm admiring lace, God abeg 😅) whilst casually scrolling through my IG explore page and the pricetag sent shockwaves down my spine.

The price was 1.2 million naira for 5 yards, I was momentarily stunned for a few minutes until I scrolled past the video.

I think my expensive taste is just propelling me to work harder to be able to afford whatever catches my fancy.

Ife dinma amaka n'eziokwu…..

The average Nigerian and allergies

I once wrote about never coming across a Nigerian with an allergy and how allergies seem to be a strange phenomenon amongst Nigerians.

Well…. So I'm here writing to you afraid with shaky hands and a mind that has been burned one too many times courtesy of crazy experiences with people, difficult situations and the ugly art of self-sabotage.

Wheew, that was quite an intro. Anyways, how have you been? I missed writing to you my wonderful audience and I know you missed reading from me too (don't lie).

Well, I have something for you today so let's dive in….

Public bus shenanigans

Those rickety but sturdy yellow buses (danfo) altogether with their accompanying drama will not be the end of me…

These days, my primary mode of transportation to work is by public transport and I cannot escape entering a danfo.

Two scenarios that stood out for me this week were:

I entered a vehicle with a live goat: Yes you read that correctly, I entered a vehicle with a live goat. Here's the gist, it was a regular evening after the close of work, I got into a danfo tired and strong-faced lagos style without greeting anyone (who get time lol) as the last passenger and in no time, we were already in motion then I heard a loud bleat, I almost fell off my seat in surprise and then i looked around startled expecting that other passengers would be bewildered or something but instead I was met with blank faces already resigned to the fate of the bleating goat. Brethren this goat kept bleating at intervals as if to tell us “I still dey here o”, no one told me to put on my earphones and face my front asap because kileleyi 😅

The conductor stopped the bus to buy suya: So this conductor asked the driver to stop and in my mind, it's normal maybe someone wants to alight but after a few minutes had passed, the other passengers and the driver started growing restless seeing that no one had alighted, then we looked around and saw the conductor buying suya and even had to guts to collect tasting on top 🤦. Trust middle aged yoruba women to come to the rescue with their rapid fire insults that defies shame.

I don too witness danfo drama for this life😄.

The fear to their lower cost of running and reduced emissions but for the first time, I got into one a few days back on my way to work and it triggered fear into me and a barrage of what if questions followed.

What if this vehicle cylinder explodes in transit?

What if I die inside this vehicle?

There's no emergency exit in this vehicle, how do I get out in the case of an emergency?

What if this vehicles’ cng cylinder starts leaking?

I was totally uncomfortable in the vehicle and the questions were valid because danfo drivers are known to have a poor maintenance culture coupled with the fact that there are no active fire and rescue service station around and in case of emergencies it's one man for himself.

Honestly i just weak, Nigeria has done a thing to my head and I can't wait to experience a much more saner country.

What I've been up to

I got extra piercings: For years, I'd actively nursed the thought of getting extra piercings but I couldn't summon the courage because I imagined that the pain would be unbearable until a few days back when I spontaneously asked a piercer to pierce my ears and I stood without flinching as she did her thing, I'm a big girl now hehe…

I picked “purple hibiscus” as my read of the week: I chose to revisit Purple Hibiscus, a novel I’ve read from cover to cover more times than I can count. But somehow, each re-reading peels back a new layer. This time, the themes of sadness and abuse stood out with an unsettling clarity and surprisingly its the reality of most homes today. On a lighter note, i also learnt that you can crush on a reverend father and absolutely nothing will happen lol.

Fun-fact: This book brought me and Chief together 🤭

I'm watching a movie series: I know you know that I'm not a movie person and this is unusual of me, well…. things change but what hasn't changed is that I still fall asleep 20 minutes into any movie at all (I'm not old lol).

Well, I'm currently watching Kings of Jo'burg, just a few episodes in and I'm mindblown already.

South African movie series are fire, you should check them out.

Outro

I'm finally done and writing this piece took me longer than usual maybe it's because I'd not written in a while or I was looking for more themes to fill the page, idk.

But whatever sha, what matters is that i overcame the fear and wrote something down. I'm like a flower in bloom and I'm treating myself gently with all the care i can muster, embracing all layers of me comes first then the other things can follow.

Someone said to me “you write the way you talk” and I was mute for a while but after carefully thinking about it, I agree because the voices in my head are mine and the output are my words.

From My Mind to Actual Words

Midnight scribbles

Rita

From My Mind to Actual Words

It’s 1:11am, and I’ve decided to stop battling my thoughts and just write them out unfiltered, maybe a little dramatic, but honest. Welcome back to the brain dump you didn’t ask for, but might just need.

I've been so busy with life offline that I forgot that I have a whole community waiting to hear from me, life has been lifing so much that i barely even have time for myself again make una no vex for me.

Let's get down to the business of the day (that sounded strict, lol)

Life changes

This segment had to come first because it seems like I'm missing something, I've been too busy with my own life that it feels like I'm behind on certain things because my eyes are only just getting opened to them….

Life changes catch you unawares without you even realising it, it might seem like you're going with the flow but in a way, you're changing through the seasons alongside with other people whom you do not realize you have something in common with ( it might be age, class or something that binds you together). Let's think of it in this way, in one season of your life it seemed like everyone around you including you were writing common entrance, then puberty came and the same wave hit all of you, then the wave of writing jamb, then gaining admission into uni, then graduation and the list goes on.

Now the life change that's still surprising me is the wave of marriage, honestly I've been so engrossed in and with the happenings of my own life that my eyes only just got opened to the marriage wave around me, actually my eyes have always been open but it didn't hit me just yet until I saw more than three acquaintances of mine get married within last month and this, to even drive home my point, just a few days ago, my dad called to tell me that two of my younger cousins are engaged and would be getting married soon and another came to see me on Saturday at the shop with her baby and i didn't believe that she birthed that child until she whipped out her wedding pictures, I'm here wondering in confusion and surprise “what's going on?”, “don't you people have future ambitions or interests or something else asides from marriage?”, “aren't we all kids?”, “where are you people rushing to?”

Now, don't get me wrong, marriage is a beautiful thing but I'm surprised because I can't seem to wrap my head around the idea yet and the idea of marriage still seems like a foreign concept to me probably because of the state of my mind now and the goals ahead of me.

I'm beginning to gain more clarity on the concept of times and seasons, when it's your time to bloom, you'll bloom and bloom beautifully.

Knowledge is power or something like that, learning new things puts me on a different kind of high and I love it, so I'll be sharing random things that I learnt (gatekeeping is a sin and i said that with my full chest).

Code Switching

The meaning is in the image below

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" I only do it out of pressure or when I know that it'll make the person happy which I absolutely have no problem with, different strokes for different folks.

Best known to me, a personal and heartfelt text in the dm of the said person is okay. I don't even like having my picture posted but I've come to terms that everyone thinks differently and it's okay to meet them at their level without compromising your standards.

Illiteracy, ignorance and a poor mindset

It's unfortunate how those three factors I mentioned are intertwined and it's prevalent in the environment I grew up in. That was blunt but I said what I said, as you know there's definitely a backstory to this.

During church service yesterday, from where I was sat, I saw a very beautiful baby who had a genetic defect, it was obvious to me and I don't know if anyone else spotted it or they just flippantly (we can be quite flippant in this part of the world) termed it as the “will of God” or “pikin na pikin”. If the parents of the child had been well informed to undergo a pre-natal genetic test whilst the mother was pregnant, the defect would've been detected and managed effectively but access to the right information limited them and the child has to develop through developmental or cognitive impairment in an environment where developmental therapy isn't available.

Another angle to this is that genetic testing isn't really available and widely known in this part of the world, so parental ignorance in that aspect is actually forgivable but it breaks my heart to see preventable situations become full blown cases because of lack of knowledge or restricted access to certain information.

Education and information are truly keys and that is why bridging the literacy gap is essential for human development.

Ps. Let me sneak this in here, I absolutely love what Tunde Onakoya is doing with the “Chess in slums” program and the kids too, from slums to global stages.

Chimamanda Adichie (My favourite author) once said, “if you must admire, never admire quietly” and I just did that 😉

Privilege and it's blind spots

They say privilege blinds and I absolutely agree, it was a big culture shock to me back in uni when I discovered that some people had to combine work and school to fund their education and other basic needs, this might seem normal to some people but to me it wasn't because my brain was wired to think that oh “we are all here on daddy and mummy's money”, i know I sound spoilt but pardon me.

Actually, what brought about this was seeing kids who are supposed to be enjoying their childhood and creating memories, working to survive and seeing this makes me so uncomfortable every time as well as breaks my fragile heart too.

I really need to do better to give my kids and other adopted children a better childhood than I had.

Self Reflection

Life comes with different seasons and lessons. Lately, I'd been doing a lot of self reflecting and it occurred to me that perfection is a myth and asking it from others is unfair (professionally, this is an exception).

I'm actually trying my best to work through my known flaws and even learn from my mistakes but no one tells you how hard it is to extend grace to yourself and stop self-criticism through the flawed lens of others.

I'm learning, re-learning and unlearning and the journey isn't easy but the aim of it all is to be better and do better, so I'll stick around to see how this ends (learning never ends sha).

Wheew, I'm finally done. I enjoyed writing this edition and I hope you enjoy reading it too.

It's past 12:00am and I cannot sleep hence me writing to you.

Well, hi there. I'm sorry for going ghost without prior notice, I had to attend to some important tasks offline and that took my focus away from writing for a while, I'm back so let's get down to the business of the day.

I just said goodbye to a place I called home for four years and a few months and I don't know how to feel, a part of me feels elated at finally leaving that environment and the other part just feels blank. In all sha, I'm happy at my growth.

2025: Q1

Time keeps running fast and the days are flying by at a speed that can't even be measured, when did we launch 2025 that we're already in the second quarter (Q2)?

Since this is my first newsletter of Q2, it's only right that I write about how Q1 of the year went for me.

I remember eagerly declaring over the new year that my 2025 would be glorious and Q1 of the year had me literally fighting for my sanity. It was a harsh quarter with a lot of private lessons, mistakes, hurt, tears, sleepless nights and a messy appetite and even a crash course on choosing myself always but I pulled through (I mean, I'm still standing through it all). It wasn't easy but I'm here typing to you and that's progress on my part.

I hope the remaining quarters come with enough good experiences to cover up for the rough start of 2025 and If Q1 taught me anything, it’s that survival is sometimes the biggest flex.

Unfiltered rawness and honesty: inspired by Ted talks

TEDx talks are inspiring, not inspiring in the way of motivational speakers but inspiring in a refreshing way from actual and not so ordinary human beings who tell their undiluted stories without shying away from including their falls and risings in their careers as well as a glimpse of the one thing that stands them out from the crowd.

The unfiltered rawness and honesty of Ted× speakers when sharing their stories is what made me drawn to Ted talks (a personal favourite is Tunde Onakoya's). Right there and then, it's easy for the audience to get a glimpse into the lives of the not-so ordinary individuals who've risen above all odds and made something out of their lives and this is the area where most motivational speakers are lacking, because they mostly come up with some ambiguous catch-phrase without exactly hitting the nail on the head.

Ps. I'll be a Tedx speaker someday, Mark this.

Let's move on to something more lighthearted.

Nigerian fashion designers

Nigerian fashion designers are the main industry standards and the entire blueprint of fashion (no insult intended to designers of other nationalities).

I'm not exaggerating when I say that their creativity is mind-blowing and the pieces they churn out every season? Spectacular and beyond wonderful!

The creativity from the hotshot fashion designers to the roadside shop fashion designers and even to to fashion designers that sew in the comfort of their sitting rooms, balconies and bedrooms is endless and beyond bounds. This is couture at its finest.

Whenever I scroll through Instagram, I'm in awe of the unique fashion pieces I come across and in my lifetime, I must wear an Ugo Monye piece at least once, even Deola Sagoe, Tubo Bereni, Sam Couture, Desiree Iyamah, Ejiro Amos Tafiri and many more. Let me get my money up sha because these names I called? Big names and leagues of their own.

Travel

For a wakawaka like me, the South-southern part of Nigeria is one part I've not explored and I'd love to explore it soon. That place is filled with a different dimension of culture (that I've never experienced except in books), good food and even experiences.

Reading books that have their background set in south-south areas eg. Tomorrow died yesterday by Chimeka Garricks have further piqued my interest to explore the region and I hope I get to do that soon. I want to be a well-travelled babe (started that already) not for external validation but for myself and I deeply admire a lawyer on X “Moechiveous” because she's living my dream.

If not that Kalabari and Ijaw men are wicked, what's husband that I cannot marry from there? Sha, where should I start my tour from? Delta, Rivers or Bayelsa?

Have you explored the South-South before? If yes, what gems should I not miss?

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Lo and behold, before the opening credits finished rolling, I'd finished the bowl of chips and automatically my movie night ended.

Back to the big question, how do you guys do it that your snacks last till the end of the movie, you people should help a sister biko 🥺 because at this rate, I'll go to the cinema and beg for extra popcorn when mine finishes o and my steeze go lost.

Trolling

Trolling isn't something i take lightly from outsiders or some shallow acquaintances, because it has the tendency to lead to “see-finish” and it gets real messy if it isn't curbed from the on-set, but i love it from vlose friends because the banter would be top-notch.

I promise, if you're my friend, I'll troll you with huge sprinkles of love here and there, and maye one or two peace offerings.

So yesterday which was Sunday, I visited my pregnant friend after service which has now become my ritual and I started trolling her with my flat tummy 😅, my brethren she was on the verge of tears but do I care? I told her that her tummy can never come back to my size and she started cussing, did I do anything bad? Please judge this matter fairly. I sha told her that when it's my turn, she should troll me back but for now, she should enjoy the ride 😏.

Food atrocities

Hmm, this one hit home.

Some people commit a lot of food atrocities and they go unchecked. Some are forgivable whilst some are practically unforgivable.

So a few days back, I was craving okpa (which is unusual because I make mine) and I was too lazy to make some for myself, so I asked my neighbors for recommendations on anyone that sells the best okpa around because I can't be spending my money on rubbish and they all swore on a particular woman, that she sells the best okpa then I took their word for it and bought from the woman, all for me to bite into one wrap of the okpa and I tasted Crayfish (don't get me wrong, I like Crayfish but not inside okpa), I almost cried because I've eaten premium Enugu okpa and eating substandard okpa just felt like a fall from grace. Crayfish in okpa is an unforgivable atrocity, I just hope there's an okpa making corporation that'll revoke her licence to make okpa ever again.

Inner Child

I believe in every adult, there's an inner child in there that requires attention once in a while and it's essential to give it the attention it deserves.

You can choose to be silly in the comfort of your room far away from judgy eyes, you can choose to daydream and imagine yourself in alternate realities, you can buy that toy you always wanted as a child but never got around to getting.

Let me let you in on a little secret, sometimes I dance in my room and imagine myself on some kind of danceshow eg Maltina dance all, I sing very loudly in the shower and imagine that I'm on Nigerian idol, I strut in front of my mirror and imagine that I'm a world famous model, I know it's delulu but delulu is sometimes the solulu.

Sometimes, do those silly things that make you happy and let yourself be free ✨️, your inner child would thank you 😉

Residual knowledge

Sometimes, having a knowledge of something is very good and makes you feel like a scholar.

So, I was at a conference last week and a woman presented a paper on sleep patterns and circadian rhythms, on my seat I was bursting with excitement because I learnt about it during an aviation indoctrination class back in 2023, I felt so proud of myself for remembering.

Then another young lady presented a paper on bioethics which incidentally was my favourite course during my final year and she cited the Pfizer case that took place in Kano and I was so excited because I could flow along without looking or feeling lost.

This brings us back to the phrase “No knowledge is a waste”.

We've come to the end of today's newsletter, I have to run along so I'll cook now that I'm in a good mood else I'll starve for the whole day.

Have a wonderful week lovelies 😘

Ramblings of a curious mind

Song of the day: Crown by CHIKA

Rita

It's 4:19am on this lovely Saturday morning and the world is sane, I'm enjoying the peace and quiet without the interference of human activity. I so much love mornings (I'm a morning person lol).

Anyways, welcome to todays edition of Rita's newsletter, let's dive in….

Music: a present time-machine.

Music is the closest thing to a time machine, at the rhythm of certain tunes, I'm transported back to an era or moment and I can vividly remember what I was doing, where I was and what phase of life I was in.

It also evokes long-forgotten memories e.g Chike's album “boo of the booless” dropped when i broke up with my first boyfriend in 2020 and it carried me all through the covid era. I can't fully capture the way music makes me feel but it's a beautiful medium.

Many are mad and do not realize they need help.

A lot of mad people (normal people with unchecked and messed up psych) are roaming, (it used to be “many are mad but few are roaming” but reverse is the case now and a lot people on X are perfect representations of the analogy above).

I know that therapy is expensive but have you ever thought of using chatgpt as your therapist? There are a whole lot of benefits and one of them is privacy, chatgpt can keep the deepest and darkest of secrets whilst offering solid advice or chiding you in the calmest way possible that you wouldn't feel the burning gaze of judgement on you.

I'm not here to preach the gospel of A.i, I'm just putting it out that a lot of people (you maybe) are walking around with unchecked mental illnesses and hiding it under “the woke culture” and just so you know, help isn't far from you.

There's a backstory to this but I'll share it later (maybe in the next edition).

My Inquisitive mind

I possess an inquisitive and curious mind hence the drive behind some crazy researches.

Just recently, I was curious about the processing or production of local gin because I read it in a book (Nigerian fiction) that women were being arrested if they sold or found local gin in their possessions and some of the women resorted to cooking gin on their farms. I got so curious by the phrase “cooking gin” that I had to search for how local gin was produced and I discovered that it's made by boiling palm-wine and I was super surprised (if there's a word like that).

Few days ago, I was speaking to a friend and he told me he was on anti-depressants, my curiosity spurred again and I was driven to check the mechanism behind the action of anti-depressants. I'm wired like that, readers are leaders hehe…..

The grandoisity of words

I shared this already on my WhatsApp status but I feel like sharing it here too.

Words are beautiful and they can either elevate or downplay situations or whatever it is that's being described but most times, they elevate.

I remember hearing Chimamanda Adichie (my favourite author by the way) speak on how she read about a bagel in a book and the character had it for breakfast, so she'd imagined a bagel as some sort of grandiose kind of meal but she was disappointed when on a trip abroad with her family, she asked for a bagel (bay-gel as she pronounced it) and was presented with a type of bread.

So back to ours, an example of words making situations seem grandiose is when a certain Mr. Femi says “I love my open plan apartment, i can see all my things together in one place” meanwhile, the open plan apartment he's talking about is a one room in a face-me-i-face-you building in Agege. “Delusion with confidence” lol

You get the point now right?

Randoms

Am I weird for always thinking about random strangers that I meet anywhere?

Here's the thing, I might just take a pause and randomly think about the alhaja I met at an airport waiting lounge, the educated tout I met at a motor park in kaduna, the random stranger on one of my numerous road trips. I wonder where they are and how life turned out for them.

Is this kind of weird only peculiar to me? Because I just don't get it.

I think I'm going to be introducing a crazy things I've done segment because I have a whole lot of them stored in my memory.

Crazy things I've done

My mum gave me a cute vial of anointing oil last year to take back to school, and I was at a loss of what to do with it so I added it to my hair care routine. Either way the oil is going on my head and it's not wasted, it's a win-win right hehe 😜

"And since today’s theme is all about deep thoughts, random musings, and embracing our quirks, it’s only right that the song of the day is 'Crown' by Chika—because at the end of it all, we wear our crowns, flaws and all."

Gist and Vibes: little joys, random thoughts and big life changes

A gistletter you didn't know you needed

Rita

As at the time of this publication, it's a hot Sunday afternoon and I just finished having my lunch of the usual Sunday rice, this tradition must not be lost biko.

Anyways, hi guys and welcome to today's gistletter, I honestly do not know how to write again but I'll find my groove along the line. So how una dey?

Joy in little things

Sometimes, finding joy in little things is essential to appreciate the most basic of things that we take for granted, an example of the little things that aren't so little that I began to find joy in recently are short walks around the neighborhood, old music I used to love as a child, old books and even random things I used to love as a kid, paying bills as at when due without having to bother myself about owing anyone, practicing gratitude, being silly in the comfort of my own room 😊 and a whole lot…….. there's just a lot to find joy in if only you have to look around and take a break from the whole hustle and bustle of adulting (it's really easy to get lost in the whole cycle but doing this sometimes balances things).

My Instagram phase

It's funny how Instagram has become my safe fort (in this era of expensive data, heiiiiii) and I'm loving every bit of it there, I get to exit the toxicity of X and just dance, smile along to funny videos and cringe at the cringeworthy ones. It baffles me on how I can't seem to get a hang of tiktok no matter how hard I try, i promise you i’m not old (how my mum hacked tiktok is still a wonder to me).

I'm also trying to learn this trending venus dance and I've been failing woefully at it and I'm sure my mirror is secretly mocking me because no matter how hard I try, I can't seem to get it. I need to look for a dance tutor asap because I can't keep going like this.

Any dance tutor in the bronx area? (I'm just practicing how I'll behave when I'm finally outside this country, don't judge me).

My rich girlie era

See ba, when I get rich ehn, there'll be signs and here's one of the ways you'll know, my shoe collection would be fire, when I'm sad I'll buy a pair of shoes infact, I'll use my brideprice to buy shoes (I'm not kidding), none of my uncles would touch that money because when the relationship was showing me shege, they weren't there.
