Most Christians know the answer.

Thirty.

Now here’s the harder question.

Why thirty?

When that question was asked at a church I recently visited, even the pastor paused before answering.

“I don’t know,” he finally admitted. “Because that’s when God wanted Him to.”

It’s a good answer.

But I think Scripture gives us a better one.

Luke could have simply written,

“Jesus began His ministry.”

Instead, he deliberately tells us,

“When He began His ministry, Jesus Himself was about thirty years of age...” (Luke 3:23).

That raises an obvious question.

Why did Luke think Jesus’ age was important enough to record?

Was it merely a historical detail?

Or was it another thread woven into the larger story of Scripture?

The answer begins more than a thousand years before Bethlehem.

Long before Jesus stepped into the waters of the Jordan River, God had already established a remarkable pattern, one that appears in the lives of priests, kings, prophets, and ultimately finds its fulfillment in Christ.

I. Moses, the Law, and the Levitical Priests

The pattern begins in the wilderness.

After delivering Israel from Egypt, God instructed Moses to establish the priesthood through Aaron and the tribe of Levi. These men were entrusted with the most sacred responsibilities in Israel. They carried the furnishings of the tabernacle, cared for the sanctuary, and ministered before the presence of God. Their work represented the meeting place between heaven and earth.

Because their calling was holy, God carefully regulated every aspect of their service, including when it would begin.

Repeatedly, Numbers 4 gives the same instruction:

“From thirty years and upward, even to fifty years old, all who enter the service to do the work in the Tent of Meeting...” (Num. 4:3; cf. vv. 23, 30, 35, 39, 43, 47).

This wasn’t an arbitrary age requirement.

The Levites didn’t suddenly become qualified on their thirtieth birthday. They had already spent years learning, preparing, and living within the covenant community. But at thirty, they entered the sacred work God had prepared them to do.

That distinction is easy to miss.

Throughout Scripture, God often spends years preparing His servants before publicly appointing them.

At this point, the pattern seems limited to Israel’s priests.

Then the story takes an unexpected turn.

The next person Scripture specifically tells us was thirty years old wasn’t standing in the tabernacle.

He was sitting in an Egyptian prison.

II. Joseph: From the Pit to the Palace

If the pattern ended with the Levites, we might conclude that thirty was simply the required age for priestly service.

But Scripture doesn’t leave us there.

The next person whose age is specifically recorded as thirty isn’t a priest at all.

He’s a Hebrew slave sitting in an Egyptian prison.

Joseph’s story is well known.

At seventeen, his brothers sold him into slavery (Gen. 37:2, 28). In Egypt, he faithfully served Potiphar until he was falsely accused by Potiphar’s wife and thrown into prison (Gen. 39). For years, his life appeared to move farther away from God’s promises rather than closer to them.

Yet all along, God was preparing him.

Then, in a single verse, the narrative reaches a turning point:

“Now Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh, king of Egypt.” (Gen. 41:46)

Why does Moses tell us Joseph’s age?

At first glance, it seems unnecessary. The story would read perfectly well without it. Joseph interpreted Pharaoh’s dreams, was elevated to second in command over Egypt, and began administering the nation in preparation for the coming famine. Why interrupt the narrative with a seemingly incidental detail?

Because Scripture often signals significance through details we are tempted to overlook.

Joseph’s thirtieth year marks the transition from hidden preparation to public responsibility.

For thirteen years, God had been shaping Joseph in obscurity. The pit taught him dependence. Slavery taught him faithfulness. Prison taught him patience. None of those years were wasted. Each became part of God’s preparation for the work Joseph would one day perform before the nations.

Only then did God bring him before Pharaoh.

Only then was he entrusted with authority.

Only then did he begin the public ministry for which God had been preparing him all along.

This pattern echoes what we saw with the Levites.

• Before there was public service, there was private preparation.

• Before there was authority, there was testing.

• Before there was exaltation, there was humility.

Joseph’s life reminds us that God’s preparation often occurs where no one is watching. The years that appear to delay His promises are frequently the very years He uses to make His servants ready for them.

At this point, we have two witnesses.

The priests of Israel entered their sacred service at thirty.

Joseph stepped into his God-ordained calling before the nations at thirty.

One could still dismiss this as coincidence.

But then another servant of God reaches the same age.

This time...

a shepherd from Bethlehem.

III. David: Anointed Long Before He Wore the Crown

If Joseph teaches us that God prepares His servants in obscurity, David teaches us that being chosen by God is not the same as being publicly commissioned by God.

Long before David ever wore Israel’s crown, God had already chosen him.

When Samuel arrived in Bethlehem, Jesse presented seven of his sons, but the Lord rejected each one.

Instead, God chose the youngest—a shepherd boy tending sheep in the fields.

Samuel then anointed David before his family, and “the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon David from that day forward” (1 Sam. 16:13).

David was God’s chosen king.

But he was not yet Israel’s king.

After his anointing, David did not ascend a throne.

He returned to the pasture.

He served in Saul’s court.

He defeated Goliath.

He fled for his life.

He lived as a fugitive in caves and wildernesses.

He endured betrayal, hardship, and years of waiting.

From a human perspective, the anointing may have seemed almost meaningless.

Yet God had not forgotten His promise.

He was preparing His servant.

Only years later, after Saul’s death and the long season of preparation had run its course, Scripture records another seemingly incidental detail:

“David was thirty years old when he became king, and he reigned forty years.” (2 Samuel 5:4)

Once again, Scripture pauses to record David's age.

Because David’s thirtieth year marks the moment when God’s private calling became public kingship.

His anointing happened years earlier.

His enthronement came at thirty.

That distinction is profound.

God often declares His purpose long before He reveals it to the world.

The years between anointing and enthronement were not years of delay.

They were years of formation.

• David learned to shepherd sheep before he shepherded Israel.

• He learned humility before authority.

• Faithfulness before power.

• Dependence before the crown.

The Levites were commissioned at thirty.

Joseph stood before Pharaoh at thirty.

David ascended Israel’s throne at thirty.

Each had already been called.

Each spent years in preparation.

Each entered a public, God-appointed role at the age Scripture intentionally records.

And yet one more servant of God remains.

A priest who never entered the temple.

Instead...

the heavens opened.

IV. Ezekiel: The Priest Who Saw Heaven Open

By now the pattern has become unmistakable. The Levites entered their priestly service at thirty. Joseph stood before Pharaoh at thirty. David ascended Israel’s throne at thirty.

Then Scripture introduces one more servant whose age is deliberately recorded.

A priest.

But unlike those before him, Ezekiel would never begin his ministry where he expected.

Ezekiel belonged to a priestly family. Had history unfolded normally, he would have entered his priestly service in Jerusalem at the age prescribed in the Law. He would have ministered in Solomon’s temple, offering sacrifices before the Lord alongside the other priests.

But history did not unfold normally.

In 597 B.C., King Nebuchadnezzar carried thousands of Judeans into exile, including the young priest Ezekiel (2 Kings 24:10–16). The temple was far behind him. Jerusalem was hundreds of miles away. The land of promise had been exchanged for the rivers of Babylon.

Humanly speaking, Ezekiel’s calling appeared impossible.

• A priest without a temple.

• A servant without a sanctuary.

• A calling without a place to fulfill it.

Then, in the opening verse of his book, Ezekiel tells us something striking:

“In my thirtieth year... the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God.” (Ezek. 1:1)

Many scholars understand Ezekiel’s reference to “my thirtieth year” as his age. If so, the timing is remarkable. The very year he would have expected to begin serving in the temple became the year God commissioned him in an entirely unexpected way.

But instead of opening the doors of the temple...

God opened heaven.

Instead of standing before an earthly altar...

Ezekiel stood before the throne of God.

Instead of serving in Jerusalem...

he was commissioned beside the Kebar River in Babylon.

The vision that follows shatters every expectation.

Ezekiel sees the glory of the Lord riding upon a heavenly chariot-throne, attended by living creatures and wheels full of eyes (Ezek. 1). The message is unmistakable: Israel may be in exile, but Israel’s God is not. His presence is not confined to a building in Jerusalem. His throne rules over heaven and earth.

For years, Ezekiel had been preparing for a ministry he would never have.

At thirty, God revealed a calling greater than the one Ezekiel had expected.

The priest became a prophet.

The temple servant became a herald of God’s heavenly throne.

Now the pattern is complete.

• Priest.

• Administrator.

• King.

• Prophet.

Each entered a God-appointed office at thirty.

Each had been prepared long before the world saw them.

Each points beyond himself.

Because all four offices converge in one person.

Jesus Christ.

V. Jesus: The Pattern Finds Its Fulfillment

By now, Luke’s statement no longer feels like an incidental historical detail.

After tracing this thread through the Old Testament, his words carry a significance they did not have before.

“When He began His ministry, Jesus Himself was about thirty years of age...” (Luke 3:23).

Luke wasn’t inviting us to admire the number.

He was inviting us to recognize the Messiah.

For more than a thousand years, God had woven a pattern into the fabric of redemptive history.

• The Levites entered their priestly ministry at thirty.

• Joseph stepped from prison into the administration of a kingdom at thirty.

• David ascended Israel’s throne at thirty.

• Ezekiel received his prophetic commission at thirty.

Each represented a different office.

Each served a different purpose.

Each pointed beyond himself.

Then Jesus stepped into the Jordan River.

Unlike the Levites, Jesus was not descended from Aaron. Yet He came as the Great High Priest who would offer not the blood of bulls and goats, but His own blood once for all (Heb. 9:11–14).

Like Joseph, He was rejected by His own before becoming the Savior of the nations.

Like David, He was God’s Anointed King long before the world recognized Him, and He would inherit a throne that would never end (Luke 1:32–33).

Like Ezekiel, He proclaimed the Word of God—but unlike Ezekiel, He was the Word made flesh (John 1:14).

At His baptism, heaven opened.

The Holy Spirit descended upon Him.

The Father declared,

“You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.” (Luke 3:22).

This was not the moment Jesus became the Son of God.

He had always been the eternal Son.

Nor was this the moment He became qualified to accomplish the Father’s will.

The One who existed before Abraham (John 8:58) needed no preparation for His mission.

Rather, this was His public commissioning before Israel.

The Father publicly identified Him.

The Spirit visibly anointed Him.

The Messiah stepped into the ministry He had come to accomplish.

Then Luke quietly tells us something that most readers pass over.

Jesus was about thirty years old.

Now we understand why.

For centuries, Israel watched priests begin their service at thirty.

They watched Joseph rise to save the nations at thirty.

They watched David ascend the throne at thirty.

They watched Ezekiel receive his commission at thirty.

Each life became another brushstroke on the canvas of redemption.

Each office added another piece to the portrait of the coming Messiah.

Then, when Jesus stepped into the waters of the Jordan at about thirty years of age, the picture was finally complete.

What appeared to be isolated historical details scattered throughout the Old Testament were, in reality, God’s deliberate preparation for the arrival of His Son.

Jesus did not simply continue the pattern.

He fulfilled it.

He is the true Priest.

The greater Joseph.

The greater David.

The greater Prophet.

Every shadow finds its substance in Him.

Every office finds its fulfillment in Him.

Every thread leads to Him.

VI. Why This Matters

At first glance, this may seem like little more than an interesting biblical pattern.

But it reveals something profound about the way God works.

Long before Jesus was born in Bethlehem, the Father was preparing His people to recognize Him. What looked like disconnected moments in Israel’s history were actually signposts pointing toward Christ. Every priest who entered the tabernacle at thirty, every king who ascended the throne, every prophet commissioned for service, was part of God’s unfolding plan to reveal His Son.

This is one of the beautiful realities of biblical theology.

The Bible is not a collection of disconnected stories. It is one unfolding story authored by God Himself, centered on the person and work of Jesus Christ.

But there is another lesson hidden within this pattern.

Notice how long God prepared His servants before He entrusted them with public ministry.

Joseph spent thirteen years in slavery and prison before standing before Pharaoh.

David spent years tending sheep, serving Saul, fleeing through caves, and waiting for God’s timing before wearing the crown.

Ezekiel endured exile before receiving his commission beside the Kebar River.

Even Jesus—the sinless Son of God—lived in relative obscurity for nearly thirty years before beginning the public ministry that would change the world.

If the Father chose not to rush His own Son into public ministry, why should we expect Him to rush us?

Our culture celebrates visibility.

God values preparation.

We admire platforms.

God develops character.

We often pray for opportunities.

God often answers by giving us seasons of formation.

Those hidden years are not wasted years.

They are the workshop of God.

The years when nothing seems to be happening are often the years when God is doing His deepest work—teaching humility, cultivating faithfulness, exposing pride, strengthening endurance, and preparing His servants for responsibilities they cannot yet see.

Most of us will never stand before Pharaoh.

We will never wear Israel’s crown.

We will never receive visions beside the Kebar River.

But every follower of Christ is called to faithful service.

And before God entrusts greater responsibility, He often shapes the person who will carry it.

Ultimately, however, this pattern was never primarily about Joseph.

Or David.

Or Ezekiel.

Or even the age of thirty.

It was always about Jesus.

From the wilderness of Sinai to the banks of the Jordan, God was patiently weaving a tapestry that would allow those with eyes to see to recognize His Messiah when He appeared.

Luke records Jesus’ age because it is more than a historical detail.

It is another witness that Jesus is the fulfillment of everything the Law, the Prophets, and the Writings anticipated.

The answer to the pastor’s question is richer than, “Because that’s when God wanted Him to.”

God wanted His Son to begin His ministry at thirty because He had spent more than a thousand years teaching His people how to recognize Him.

The New Marketplace of Hidden Knowledge

Over the past several months I’ve watched a growing movement spread across Substack.

Some writers have attracted thousands—some with nearly 10,000 subscribers—through articles with titles like:

• The Garden of Eden Was Never About Sin

• They Mistranslated the First Word of the Bible

• Jesus’ Words Have Been Mistranslated for Two Thousand Years

• The Hebrew Bible Decoded

• The Hidden Bible

• What Yeshua Actually Said

Notice the pattern.

Historic Christianity misunderstood.

Your Bible is wrong.

The translators got it wrong.

Christians have believed the wrong thing for two thousand years.

Fortunately...

Someone has finally decoded what everyone else missed.

Whenever a teacher tells you the Church has misunderstood the Bible for two thousand years—but they alone have recovered its true meaning—you should immediately become more discerning, not less.

That should not excite Christians.

It should concern us.

We’ve Seen This Before

This movement isn’t new.

The early church encountered it almost immediately.

It was called Gnosticism.

The word comes from the Greek gnosis, meaning knowledge.

The Gnostics taught that ordinary believers only possessed the surface meaning.

Real enlightenment belonged to those initiated into hidden knowledge.

Secret wisdom.

Hidden meanings.

Mysteries unavailable to everyone else.

The apostles rejected this thinking because Christianity was never built upon secret knowledge.

It was built upon the public proclamation of Jesus Christ.

The gospel wasn’t whispered to an elite few.

It was preached openly in synagogues, marketplaces, prisons, homes, and city streets.

Jesus Himself said,

“What I tell you in the darkness, speak in the light; and what you hear whispered in your ear, proclaim upon the housetops.”

— Matthew 10:27

Christianity is not a mystery religion.

Paul described his ministry as openly proclaiming Christ, "whom we proclaim" (Col. 1:28), not initiating people into hidden knowledge.

The gospel wasn’t entrusted to a secret society.

It wasn’t hidden from ordinary people.

It wasn’t reserved for initiates.

It was proclaimed publicly because God desires that all people hear and believe.

The Red Flags Christians Shouldn’t Ignore

As I continued reading these articles—and eventually the books and courses being sold alongside them—I noticed the same words appearing over and over.

• Hidden Knowledge

• Ancient Wisdom

• Decoded Scripture

• Consciousness

• Third Eye

• Mystery Schools

• What They Never Wanted You to Know

Those phrases don’t come from the apostles.

They come from the vocabulary of esoteric spirituality.

Christians should recognize these terms for what they are. "Hidden knowledge," "mystery schools," "third-eye awakening," and "higher consciousness" are not biblical categories. They belong to New Age and occult traditions that promise enlightenment through secret knowledge rather than transformation through Jesus Christ.

One writer even advertises courses promising to teach readers how to:

• awaken higher consciousness,

• understand the Mystery Schools,

• follow ancient initiation systems,

• decode hidden teachings,

• and open the “third eye.”

Christian, ask yourself:

When did Jesus ever tell His followers to pursue hidden consciousness?

When did Peter preach ancient initiation?

When did Paul teach people to open their third eye?

When did John invite believers into mystery schools?

They didn’t.

They preached Christ.

Christianity Doesn’t Need Hidden Knowledge

One advertisement I recently read made this astonishing claim:

“This knowledge was never meant for the masses.”

Think about that statement.

Compare it with Jesus.

Jesus invited:

"The Spirit and the bride say, 'Come.' And let the one who hears say, 'Come.' And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wishes take the water of life without cost."
— Revelation 22:17 (NASB 1995)

The gospel is not hidden from the masses. It is proclaimed to the world.

Christianity has never taught that truth belongs only to spiritual elites.

The gospel is the most public message ever proclaimed.

The irony is profound.

Modern teachers promise hidden knowledge.

The New Testament points us to Christ.

Paul writes:

“In Him are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”

— Colossians 2:3

Notice where wisdom is found.

Not in secret teachings.

Not in decoded Hebrew.

Not in mystery schools.

Paul says…

Christ is the hidden treasure.

Five verses later Paul warns,

“See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception...”

— Colossians 2:8

That warning feels remarkably relevant today.

Bad Hebrew Doesn’t Become Good Theology

Another common feature of these articles is the claim that Christians have misunderstood the Hebrew text for thousands of years.

One example concerns the very first verse of the Bible.

One writer argued that Genesis 1:1 has been mistranslated because Elohim is grammatically plural.

Therefore, we’re told, Genesis should suggest multiple divine beings participating in creation.

It sounds scholarly.

Until you actually read the Hebrew.

Genesis begins:

Bereshit bara Elohim

Yes.

Elohim is plural in form.

But bara— “created”—is a singular verb.

Hebrew grammar intentionally treats Elohim as a singular subject.

That is why virtually every serious Hebrew scholar translates:

“In the beginning, God created...”

Not,

“The gods created...”

This isn’t hidden wisdom.

It’s basic Hebrew grammar.

When an author confidently overturns centuries of Hebrew scholarship without explaining the theological training, linguistic expertise, or scholarly basis for making such sweeping claims, every Christian should stop and ask, “Why should I trust this interpretation?”

If you’re going to claim the Church has misunderstood Scripture for two thousand years, you owe your readers more than confidence. You owe them evidence.

The problem isn’t that Christians misunderstood Genesis for thousands of years.

The problem is that sensational claims often ignore basic grammar in order to produce sensational conclusions.

That’s not exegesis.

That’s eisegesis.

The Bible doesn’t need to be decoded.

It needs to be read faithfully.

To be clear, no faithful Bible translator would claim every translation is perfect. Translation is a careful, complex task, and scholars sometimes disagree about how best to render a word or phrase. Those discussions are healthy and have existed for centuries. But that is a very different claim from saying the Church has fundamentally misunderstood Scripture for two thousand years and that only now has someone recovered its true meaning. Those are not the same thing.

Extraordinary Claims Require Humility

Now let’s ask another question.

When someone repeatedly tells us:

• Every Bible translation is wrong...

• The Church has misunderstood Scripture...

• Christians have missed the real meaning for two thousand years...

Wouldn’t you naturally want to know something about that teacher?

• What is their theological background?

• Where did they study?

• Who taught them?

• What church are they part of?

• Who holds them accountable?

• Do they even identify themselves as followers of Jesus Christ?

These aren’t unfair questions.

They’re necessary ones.

I’m not suggesting that only people with seminary degrees can understand Scripture.

Far from it.

God has used faithful pastors, missionaries, and ordinary believers throughout history to teach His Word.

The greater the claim, the greater the responsibility to demonstrate it from Scripture, history, and sound scholarship.

If someone asks us to overturn two thousand years of Christian interpretation, we should know why we should trust their conclusions.

Sounding Spiritual Isn’t the Same as Being Christian

This may be the most troubling part.

Many of these articles sound deeply spiritual.

They quote Scripture.

They mention Hebrew.

They discuss Jesus.

They reference biblical themes.

And yet, after reading article after article, one question remains surprisingly difficult to answer:

What do they believe about Jesus Christ?

• Do they confess Him as the eternal Son of God?

• Crucified for our sins?

• Raised bodily from the dead?

• The only mediator between God and man?

• The only name under heaven by which we must be saved?

Not Jesus the teacher.

Not Jesus the enlightened sage.

• Do they believe the gospel?

• Do they preach repentance?

• Do they call people to follow Christ?

• Or do they call people to pursue consciousness?

Those are two very different paths.

Just because something sounds biblical doesn’t mean it’s biblical.

Just because someone uses Christian vocabulary doesn’t make them Christian.

Throughout history, false teaching has often borrowed the language of truth while emptying it of its biblical meaning.

The Cost of Confusing Novelty with Truth

Reading the comments beneath these articles has been the most heartbreaking part.

Not because people are asking questions.

Questions are healthy.

Questions have always been part of a growing faith.

What grieves me are comments like:

“This changed everything.”

“Thank you for finally showing me the truth.”

“Now I understand what the Church hid from us.”

“I’ve been a Christian my whole life, and no one ever taught me this.”

I don’t read those comments with anger.

I read them with sadness.

Because behind almost every one is a sincere person who genuinely wants to know God more deeply.

They aren’t rejecting Christ.

They’re searching for Him.

That’s why this matters so much.

People rarely embrace false teaching because they’re looking for error.

They embrace it because they’re sincerely looking for truth.

But somewhere along the way, they’ve been convinced that spiritual maturity comes through discovering hidden knowledge rather than knowing the One who is already revealed.

That is the danger.

We can become so captivated by a teacher’s confidence that we stop asking whether what they’re teaching is actually true.

We can mistake novelty for truth.

• Mysticism for biblical depth.

• Confidence for authority.

• Speculation for scholarship.

• Secret knowledge for spiritual maturity.

That is exactly what happened in 1 Kings 13.

The young prophet didn’t abandon God’s Word because he hated God.

He abandoned it because another spiritual voice sounded more compelling than the Word God had already spoken.

The consequences were devastating.

Three thousand years later, the danger hasn’t changed.

The voices have simply become louder.

Why I Named This Publication Hidden Word

Some readers may wonder if my publication’s name sounds similar to the language I’ve criticized.

That’s a fair question.

But there is a world of difference between Hidden Knowledge and Hidden Word.

I do not believe the Bible contains secret doctrines waiting to be decoded by a spiritual elite.

I do not believe God concealed the gospel behind an esoteric code that only a select few can unlock.

I believe God has revealed Himself through His Word and ultimately through His Son, Jesus Christ.

The “hidden” in Hidden Word doesn’t refer to secret knowledge.

It refers to the breathtaking unity of Scripture.

It is seeing how the Old Testament points to Christ.

How promises become fulfillments.

How themes develop across centuries.

How the New Testament interprets the Old Testament.

How the Bible tells one unified story of redemption from Genesis through Revelation.

Those treasures aren’t hidden because God wanted to keep them from His people.

They’re hidden because many Christians have never been taught how beautifully the Bible fits together.

The mission of Hidden Word is to make those connections clear.

To simplify complex biblical themes without oversimplifying them.

My family recently traveled to El Salvador for a family wedding. The ceremony was held at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in San Salvador.

As we settled into our seats, my twelve-year-old son leaned over and quietly asked the question.

What he noticed in a few moments was something many adults had either stopped seeing or simply learned to ignore.

Jesus once said:

“Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 18:3)

Children often see things adults miss.

Not because they know more.

But because they haven’t yet learned to explain away what is right in front of them.

Above the sanctuary stretched a massive mural of angels surrounding the Virgin of Guadalupe. Behind the altar, directly above the tabernacle, stood another prominent image of Mary. Eight stained glass windows, each depicting Mary, adorned the upper walls of the church. Everywhere I looked, the artwork throughout the basilica reinforced the same message.

Where was Jesus?

Not absent.

But unusually hard to find.

As I sat there, another question began to form in my mind.

What if this wasn’t only a question about a church building?

What if it was a question every Christian eventually has to answer?

Not whether Jesus has a place in our lives.

But whether He holds the central place in our lives.

Because it is entirely possible to fill our lives with religious activity, church attendance, ministry involvement, Bible studies, podcasts, conferences, and Christian language while quietly allowing something else to occupy the place that belongs to Christ alone.

For some, it is money.

For others, it is politics.

For others, it is a career, a denomination, a favorite sports team, or even their family.

The human heart has always been skilled at taking good things and placing them where only Christ belongs.

That question followed me throughout the ceremony. As the ceremony continued, I found myself unexpectedly saddened.

Not angry.

Not offended.

Heartbroken.

I had come to celebrate a family wedding.

Instead, I found myself grieving.

Because as I looked around the sanctuary, I could not escape the feeling that Christ had been pushed to the margins of His own house.

Jesus was present.

But He did not appear central.

And that realization broke my heart.

What My Son Saw

After the service ended, my son sought out the priest and respectfully asked him:

“Why are there so few images of Jesus?”

The priest smiled and answered:

“Because this church is dedicated to the Virgin.”

I understood what he meant.

But the answer only deepened my concern.

So I asked a follow-up question.

“I understand that it’s dedicated to Mary, but why does Jesus appear to hold second place in His own house?”

The priest paused.

Then he explained that there was another church directly below the basilica that was dedicated to Jesus.

I remember standing there thinking:

That’s exactly the problem.

Jesus certainly had a place.

The question was whether He occupied the central place.

Finally, I said what had been bothering me since we entered the church.

“From appearances, this church seems to elevate Mary above Christ.”

The priest paused, smiled politely, shrugged his shoulders, and quickly moved on.

The conversation stayed with me long after the wedding ended.

Because the more I thought about it, the more I realized this wasn’t really a conversation about architecture.

It was a conversation about theology.

It was a conversation about emphasis.

It was a conversation about who was occupying the central place in God’s house.

And the answer seemed painfully obvious.

But ultimately, it is the same question every believer must answer:

Who occupies the central place in my life?

This Wasn’t My First Catholic Wedding

This wasn’t my first wedding in a Catholic church.

Eighteen years ago, I married my wonderful wife in a Catholic church in her hometown of La Paz, Bolivia.

To do so, the Catholic Church in Bolivia required proof of my Catholic upbringing. Before they would allow us to marry in the church, I had to provide records of my baptism, First Communion, and confirmation to the Church in La Paz.

I was born and raised Catholic—an Italian-Irish kid whose faith journey began in the Roman Catholic Church.

I attended catechism from kindergarten through my senior year of high school and even attended Catholic school from fourth through sixth grade.

The people who first taught me about Jesus were Catholics.

My love for Christ began with my parents and was nurtured in the Franciscan parish where I grew up.

I learned reverence.

I learned that God is holy.

I learned that Jesus died for my sins and He is my Savior.

For those things, I remain grateful.

This is not the testimony of a man who hates the Catholic Church.

Nor is it the testimony of someone who never understood it.

I lived it.

I defended it.

I participated in it.

For years I defended Catholicism against Protestant criticism.

When my non-Catholic friends would ask me why we pray to Mary, I responded:

“We don’t pray to Mary.”

“We ask Mary to pray for us.”

Then I would recite the prayer itself to prove the point.

At the time, I thought that settled the matter.

But eventually I realized I was answering the wrong question.

The question is not whether a doctrine can be explained.

The question is whether it is taught in Scripture.

That realization changed everything.

The Questions That Never Went Away

As I began reading the Bible for myself, one issue after another forced me to ask difficult questions.

One of those questions involved confession.

Even as a child, something about the practice never sat right with me.

Not because I thought I was innocent—I wasn’t.

Not because I had nothing to confess—I did.

But because I struggled to understand why I needed a priest to stand between me and God.

I remember asking my mom about it.

She told me I didn’t need to confess to a priest, that I could confess my sins directly to God.

That answer strengthened my resolve and encouraged me to read the Bible myself.

When I began to read and later study the New Testament, I encountered a radically different message.

Jesus is our High Priest.

Jesus is our mediator.

Jesus is the one through whom we approach the Father.

Paul writes:

“For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus.” (1 Timothy 2:5)

Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.” (Romans 8:34)

The author of Hebrews tells us:

“Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God…” (Hebrews 4:14)

And then invites us:

“Therefore let’s approach the throne of grace with confidence…” (Hebrews 4:16)

Because of Christ, we have direct access to the Father.

Because of Christ, the veil was torn.

Because of Christ, the way was opened.

That same analysis eventually led me back to Mary.

The issue is not whether Mary was blessed.

She was.

The issue is not whether Mary should be honored.

She should.

The issue is whether Scripture teaches believers to direct their prayers and petitions through Mary.

The more I searched, the harder it became to find.

I found no passage instructing believers to address Mary or any of the saints for intercession.

Instead, I found Scripture repeatedly directing believers to Christ.

The Witnesses All Agree

John the Baptist understood his role.

“He must increase, but I must decrease.” (John 3:30)

Peter understood his role.

“Stand up; I too am just a man.” (Acts 10:26)

The angels understood their role.

“Do not do that… Worship God.” (Revelation 22:9)

Every faithful servant of God shares the same instinct.

They move out of the way.

They decrease so that He may be exalted.

And then… there is Mary.

At Cana, her most famous recorded words are remarkably simple:

“Do whatever He tells you.” (John 2:5)

That is the Mary I met in Scripture.

A servant.

A disciple.

A worshiper.

John points to Christ.

Peter points to Christ.

The angels point to Christ.

Mary points to Christ.

The entire Bible points to Christ.

So why do we keep building systems and churches that seem to move away from Him?

The Question I Cannot Escape

Catholics will rightly point out that Jesus was present in the basilica.

And they are correct.

I saw a brass crucifix standing on the altar.

There was a stained-glass depiction of Christ behind the altar off to the right.

And eventually I found a beautiful statue of Jesus with His arms extended in a side chapel to the left of the main sanctuary.

He was there.

The issue is not whether He was present.

The issue is whether He was central.

Presence and prominence are not the same thing.

If a non-Christian walked into that basilica knowing nothing about Christianity, who would they conclude stood at the center of the faith?

Would they leave talking about Jesus Christ?

Or would they leave talking about Mary?

The New Testament leaves no ambiguity about who belongs at the center.

Not Mary.

Not the saints.

Jesus Christ.

The crucified Lamb. The risen King.

The One before whom every knee will bow.

The One to whom all worship belongs.

The One who is first in everything.

Who Holds the Central Place?

Because every faithful servant of God shares the same desire:

Not to be seen.

But to point others to Jesus Christ.

And perhaps that is the question my son’s observation ultimately raises for all of us.

Not whether Jesus was present in a basilica.

But whether He is central in our lives.

Most of us will never build a church filled with images of Mary.

But we may fill our lives with other things.

Success.

Comfort.

Even our families.

Good things become dangerous things when they occupy a place that belongs to Christ alone.

The real question is not whether Jesus appeared central in a church building.

The real question is whether He appears central in your life.

If someone examined your calendar, your conversations, your ambitions, and your priorities, would they conclude that Christ occupies the highest place?

Or would they find something else sitting on the throne?

A Few Final Questions

As I left the basilica, a few questions remained.

What would the young Jewish girl from Nazareth think if she walked through those doors?

Would she be pleased by all the attention directed toward her?

Would she be comfortable seeing her image dominate the visual landscape of a Christian church?

Would she welcome a sanctuary where her presence appeared more prominent than that of her Son?

Perhaps a better question is this:

Would Mary be comfortable occupying a place that Scripture consistently reserves for her Son?

The Mary I see in Scripture never sought that place.

She never claimed that place.

She never pointed people toward herself, she pointed them to Christ.

And perhaps the greatest way to honor Mary is not to focus on Mary.

Perhaps the greatest way to honor Mary is to do what Mary told us to do.

Look to her Son and give Him the central place in your life.

Israel sinned.
God judged them.
The people were carried away.

But the biblical story is doing something far deeper than that.

The exile was not merely political collapse. It was covenantal reversal.

Because the descendants of Abraham ended up back in the very world God had once called Abraham to leave.

That detail changes everything.

Called Out of Babylon

The story begins immediately after the incident at the Tower of Babel.

Humanity united in rebellion.
The nations gathered to make a name for themselves apart from God.
Babel became the symbol of human civilization organized in defiance of heaven.

And then, without warning, the narrative narrows to one man.

Abram.

God calls Abram out of Ur of the Chaldeans and sends him toward a land God Himself would establish for him and his descendants.

That movement matters.

Abraham is not merely migrating geographically. He is being separated covenantally from the nations.

After Babel fractures the nations, God begins again through one man and one family line.

The call of Abraham is the beginning of a new people, a new inheritance, and ultimately a new sacred order through which the nations themselves would someday be blessed.

The Land Was Never Just Land

Modern readers often reduce Canaan to territory.

But in Scripture, the land is sacred geography.

• It is covenant inheritance.

• The place where Yahweh would dwell among His people.

• The meeting point between divine order and human obedience.

This is why the laws surrounding the land are so severe.

• Idolatry pollutes it.

• Bloodshed defiles it.

• Corruption spreads through it.

The land itself is portrayed almost as a witness to covenant faithfulness or rebellion.

Israel was never chosen merely to occupy territory.

They were chosen to embody covenant order within sacred space.

And that is precisely where the tragedy begins.

Israel Became What They Were Called to Replace

The conquest narratives are often misunderstood because readers isolate them from the larger theological framework.

The nations in Canaan are portrayed as corrupting sacred order through idolatry, violence, child sacrifice, and rebellion against Yahweh.

Israel was supposed to be different. But over time, the distinction collapsed.

• The people adopted the gods of the nations.

• The high places multiplied.

• Even the temple itself became defiled.

Under kings like Manasseh, the corruption became so complete that Judah no longer resembled the covenant people Abraham had been called to establish.

They had become indistinguishable from the world they were meant to confront.

And the prophets understood exactly what that meant.

Exile Was a Return to Babel

This is the part most readers miss.

Babylon was not accidental.

The exile carries enormous theological symbolism because Israel is sent eastward, back into the world Abraham had once left behind.

The descendants of Abraham returned to the land of the Chaldeans.

The covenant people were expelled from sacred space just as Adam was expelled from Eden.

The pattern repeats throughout Scripture:

• Adam moves east after rebellion.

• Cain goes east.

• Babel rises in the east.

• Abraham is called out from the east.

• Judah is sent back east to Babylon.

Exile is not merely displacement.

• It is anti-creation.

• Anti-exodus.

• Anti-conquest.

It is the unraveling of sacred order.

The people called out from Babylon become so corrupted that they are handed back over to Babylon.

And the prophets saw this clearly.

Jeremiah warned that the temple had become polluted.1
Isaiah described a people who honored God outwardly while their hearts remained far from Him.2

The issue was never merely rule-breaking.

It was covenant collapse.

But the Story Does Not End in Babylon

The prophets did not merely announce judgment.

They also announced that the old cycle itself had failed.

Israel could not solve the problem through another king, another reform, or another temporary return to obedience.

Something deeper had to change.

That is why Jeremiah speaks of a new covenant written not on stone, but on the heart.3

The prophets understood something deeper:

Israel’s problem was never merely external.

• Another king would not solve it.

• Another reform would not solve it.

• Another return to the land would not solve it.

Because the deeper problem was covenant failure rooted in the human heart itself.

The cycle kept repeating: rebellion, corruption, exile, judgment.

• Babel

• Egypt

• Canaan

• Babylon

The geography changed. The human condition did not.

And that is why the story ultimately points beyond Abraham, beyond Moses, beyond David, and beyond the exile itself.

The prophets began announcing something greater:

• a coming Servant,

• a coming King,

• a coming covenant renewal that would not merely restore the land, but restore the people themselves.

Isaiah foresaw a servant who would succeed where Israel failed. One who would bear the sins of the people and yet remain righteous Himself.4

The New Testament declares that this servant is Jesus.

Jesus becomes the faithful covenant representative Israel failed to become.

Where Israel rebelled, He obeyed.
Where Israel failed in the wilderness, He overcame.
Where Israel polluted sacred space, He declared Himself the true temple.5
Where Israel broke covenant, He established a new covenant in His own blood.6

Jesus does not merely continue Israel’s story.

He fulfills the story Israel could not complete.

Jesus succeeds:

• where Adam failed,

• where Israel failed,

• where kings failed,

• where priests failed,

• and where the covenant people repeatedly collapsed into rebellion.

The biblical story is not ultimately about humanity climbing its way back to God.

It is about God restoring what rebellion repeatedly destroyed.

And one of the clearest signs of that tragedy is this:

The descendants of Abraham ended up back where the story began.

The Fulfillment of Jeremiah’s Prophecy

Exactly as Jeremiah foretold, Judah would serve the king of Babylon for seventy years.7

And that is precisely what happened.

The people Abraham was called to separate from the nations had become indistinguishable from the nations themselves.

The covenant people returned to the world their forefather had once been called to leave behind.

But the exile was never the end of the story.

Because even in judgment, the prophets spoke of restoration.

After seventy years, God brought His people back from Babylon.
The temple would rise again.
Jerusalem would be rebuilt.

But the deeper problem still remained. The human heart had not changed.

And that is why the prophets began speaking not merely of a return to the land, but of a new covenant, a new heart, and a coming redeemer who would succeed where Israel failed.

The story of Scripture is not ultimately about Israel finding its way back from Babylon.

It is about God bringing humanity home from exile.

And that story reaches its fulfillment in Jesus—the faithful covenant representative, the true temple, and the fulfillment of the promise first given when God called Abraham out of Babylon.

Babylon would not have the final word.

Others are difficult because they feel unfair.

1 Kings 13 is both.

A man of God is sent by Yahweh to confront the false worship system established by Jeroboam at Bethel. He obeys courageously. He stands before the king. He prophesies judgment against the altar. He refuses royal hospitality exactly as God commanded him.

Then another prophet intercepts him.

The old prophet claims:

“An angel spoke to me by the word of the LORD…”1

The man of God believes him.

And God kills him for it.

Not the liar.

The prophet who listened to the lie… and disobeyed God.

At first glance, the story feels almost impossible to reconcile with the character of God. Why would the deceiver live while the deceived prophet dies? Was the old prophet secretly acting on God’s behalf? Was this a divine test? Or is something deeper happening beneath the surface of the narrative?

The answer begins with understanding where this story takes place.

Bethel Was Already Compromised

This is not merely the story of two prophets.

It is the story of revelation inside corrupted sacred space.

Bethel means “House of God.” It was one of the most important covenant locations in Israel’s history. But under Jeroboam it had become a counterfeit religious center designed to rival Jerusalem itself.

What makes Jeroboam’s system so dangerous is that he does not openly reject Yahweh.

Instead, he reshapes worship:

• a different altar

• different priests

• different feast days

• golden calves

• a politically useful version of religion

The result is a system that still uses Yahweh’s language while quietly redefining Yahweh’s commands.

That context matters enormously because the old prophet lives there.

Comfortably.

The narrative never explicitly condemns him for remaining in Bethel, but the tension is unmistakable. While the unnamed man of God arrives carrying an uncompromised word from Yahweh, the old prophet appears spiritually embedded within the very environment already drifting from covenant faithfulness.

And then comes the deception.

“I Also Am a Prophet as You Are”

The old prophet catches up to the man of God and says:

“I also am a prophet as you are, and an angel spoke to me by the word of the LORD…”2

Then the narrator immediately adds:

“But he lied to him.”

That sentence is the key to the entire chapter.

The temptation in this story is not paganism.

It is competing spiritual authority.

The old prophet does not tempt the man of God with wealth, immorality, or power. He tempts him with a supposed new revelation.

And that is precisely what makes the deception so dangerous.

The lie sounds spiritual.

The old prophet never tells him to reject Yahweh. He never tells him to worship another god. He simply reframes what God had already said.

That is the tragedy of the chapter.

The man of God treats a dramatic spiritual claim as more trustworthy than the clear word God had already spoken.

And that is the essence of failed discernment.

Biblically, discernment is not merely the ability to recognize obvious evil.

It is the ability to recognize when something sounds spiritual while subtly contradicting what God has already revealed.

That is why this story feels disturbingly relevant.

Because deception in Scripture rarely appears openly rebellious.

It comes speaking the language of revelation.

The Integrity of the Revealed Word

Before the man of God ever arrived at Bethel, Yahweh had already spoken clearly:

• do not eat bread there

• do not drink water there

• do not return the same way you came

The command was unmistakable.

But when another prophetic voice claimed superior insight, the man of God abandoned the word already given.

That becomes fatal.

And Israel had already been warned about this in Deuteronomy 13. Even if a prophet produced signs or claimed supernatural revelation, if the message contradicted what Yahweh had already revealed, Israel was not to follow them.

The issue was never whether the spiritual experience felt convincing.

The issue was covenant fidelity.

Suddenly the severity of the judgment makes sense.

This is not arbitrary cruelty.

It is covenant theology being enacted publicly inside corrupted sacred space.

And that is what makes the old prophet so terrifying. He is not a pagan outsider attacking the covenant from beyond Israel’s borders. He is a prophetic voice emerging from within a compromised religious system, still speaking Yahweh’s language while subtly overturning Yahweh’s word.

The Most Disturbing Irony in the Story

After lying, the old prophet suddenly receives a genuine word from Yahweh announcing judgment against the man of God.

The irony is staggering.

The false prophet becomes the mouthpiece of true judgment.

Scripture repeatedly shows God speaking through compromised vessels: Balaam, Caiaphas, even a donkey in Numbers 22.

The issue in 1 Kings 13 is not whether spiritual claims can appear genuine.

The issue is whether anyone has authority to overturn what God has already said.

And then comes the haunting image that seals the judgment.

The Lion Standing Beside the Corpse

A lion kills the man of God.

But it does not eat the body.

Nor does it attack the donkey.

Instead, both animals stand beside the corpse as travelers pass by in shock.

This is not natural violence.

It is judicial symbolism.

The lion behaves less like a predator and more like an executioner carrying out divine sentence. The untouched body signals that this is not random death, accident, or chaos. The scene itself becomes a public sign.

And in one final irony, the dead prophet becomes the last prophetic witness against Bethel.

The image is almost unbearable:
a lion standing guard over a corpse while a donkey remains unmoved beside it.

Creation itself appears frozen around the judgment.

Why?

Because the chapter is forcing the reader to confront a terrifying reality:

Spiritual language is not proof of spiritual truth.

And a compromised religious system does not become safe simply because it still sounds like it belongs to God.

That was Jeroboam’s Bethel.

And Scripture’s warning is that Bethel is never merely a place.

It’s one of the most familiar in all of Scripture. Quoted, preached, revisited every year. For many readers, it’s the clearest “prophecy” of Jesus in the Old Testament.

But that assumption might be exactly what keeps us from seeing what Isaiah is actually doing.

Because when you slow down and read it carefully, something doesn’t fit.

This doesn’t read like a prediction.
It reads like a record, like testimony entered into evidence.

And once you see it… you can’t unsee it.

The Problem Most Readers Miss

Isaiah is writing centuries before the crucifixion.

And yet the language refuses to stay in the future.

“He was despised and rejected by men.”1
“He was pierced for our transgressions.” 2
“The LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.” 3

Not will be.
Not might be.

Was. Pierced. Crushed. Assigned.

Completed action. That should stop you.

Because prophecy doesn’t normally sound like this. Prophets speak forward. They announce what is coming. They warn. They call to repentance.

But here, Isaiah doesn’t sound like a man predicting.

He sounds like a witness testifying.

This Is Testimony, Not Just Prediction

Read the structure again.

The Servant is:

• Examined

• Rejected

• Judged

• Substituted

• Vindicated

That’s not just poetic imagery, it’s legal sequence:

“He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth,”4

this is language that echoes a defendant before accusers.

“He was cut off out of the land of the living,”5

this is a judicial outcome.

“They made His grave with the wicked, and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in His mouth,”6

this is a sentence carried out.

And then the most jarring line of all:

“But the LORD was pleased to crush Him… if He would render Himself as a guilt offering…” 7

That’s not abstract theology.

This is forensic substitution.

A guilt offering is not symbolic language, it’s legal language. It belongs to a system. A structure. A framework of justice, atonement, and mediation.

Isaiah isn’t just describing suffering.

He’s describing how guilt is transferred and dealt with.

The Mechanism of Redemption Is Being Revealed

This is where most readings stop too early.

We treat Isaiah 53 as proof that Jesus would suffer.

But Isaiah isn’t just telling you that the Servant suffers.

He’s showing you what that suffering accomplishes.

“He bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors.” 8

Those are not separate ideas. They belong together.

Notice the shift—from completed action to ongoing reality.

To bear sin… and to intercede… is priestly language.

Not Levitical in form—but unmistakable in function.

Which raises a question the text itself doesn’t fully answer:

What kind of priest does this?

Because under the system Israel knew, priests offer sacrifices.

They don’t become them.

This Is Where the Canon Starts to Converge

Isaiah doesn’t stand alone.

He’s sitting in the middle of a thread that stretches backward and forward.

In Genesis 14, a priest appears with no genealogy, no origin, no explanation, only a title: king of righteousness, king of peace.

In Psalm 110:4, that priesthood is declared eternal:

“The LORD has sworn and will not change His mind,
You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.”

Not Levi.
Not Sinai.
Not temporary.

A different kind of priesthood altogether.

And then in Hebrews 7, the author does something unthinkable:

He puts the entire system on trial.

“For when there is a change in the priesthood, there is necessarily a change in the law as well.” 9

That’s not commentary.

That’s a verdict on the system itself.

Isaiah 53 Is the Missing Piece

Genesis introduces the anomaly.
Psalm 110 declares it.
Hebrews 7 explains it.

But Isaiah 53 shows you how it works, how the entire system actually resolves.

Not symbolically. Structurally.

The Servant is not just suffering.

He is acting as both:

• Sacrifice (bearing sin)

• Priest (interceding for others)

At the same time!

Which means the categories were already broken open, centuries before the cross.

The system didn’t collapse when Jesus came.

It was already pointing beyond itself.

Read It Again—But This Time Like a Record

If you read Isaiah 53 as prediction, you’ll see fulfillment.

If you read it as testimony, you’ll see something deeper:

A legal framework already in place.
A substitution already defined.
A priesthood already implied.

Not invented in the New Testament.

Revealed long before it.

Final Thought

This passage isn’t just telling you what would happen to Christ. It’s showing you the architecture of redemption itself.

And once you see it, you start to realize this isn’t an isolated text.

It’s part of a case that’s been building the entire time.

By the time the author gets to Hebrews 7, he assumes you already know the evidence:

• Genesis 14

• Psalm 110

He’s not introducing something new.

He’s reopening the case.

“Now observe how great this man was to whom Abraham, the patriarch, gave a tenth of the choicest spoils.”1

“But without any dispute the lesser is blessed by the greater.”2

That’s not devotional language.

That’s courtroom language.

He’s not explaining Melchizedek. He’s forcing a verdict.

The Move That Changes Everything

The argument hinges on one man: Abraham.

The uncontested patriarch. The foundation.

And the author shows:

• Abraham gives a tithe to Melchizedek

• Melchizedek blesses Abraham

• Therefore → Melchizedek is greater than Abraham

Then comes the line that flips the entire system:

“And, so to speak, through Abraham even Levi, who received tithes, has paid tithes,
for he was still in the loins of his forefather when Melchizedek met him.”3

Let that land.

The priesthood Israel trusted… was already subordinated before it even existed.

Why He’s Doing This (And Why It Matters)

The audience isn’t confused.

They’re tempted.

Tempted to go back to:

• The Temple

• The priesthood

• The structure that felt stable

So the author doesn’t attack the system directly.

He does something far more strategic.

He proves, from their own Scriptures, that the system was never ultimate.

The Shock: A Priesthood Outside the System

Melchizedek isn’t just a mysterious figure.

He’s a category problem.

• No genealogy

• No tribal affiliation

• No connection to the Law

And yet:

• He receives tithes

• He gives blessing

• He stands above Abraham

Then Hebrews drops the line that explains everything:

“…who has become such not on the basis of a law of physical requirement, but according to the power of an indestructible life.”4

This priesthood doesn’t come from the system. It replaces it.

The Line Most People Skip (But Shouldn’t)

“For when the priesthood is changed, of necessity there takes place a change of law also.”5

This is the moment everything shifts.

Not adjusted.

Not improved.

Changed.

The structure that defined access to God… was always temporary.

So What Is Hebrews 7 Actually Doing?

It’s not adding theology.

It’s exposing something that was always there:

A priesthood:

• Before the Law

• Outside the Law

• Greater than the Law

Hidden in plain sight.

So that when the Messiah came…

No one could say this was unexpected.

The Real Question Hebrews 7 Forces

This isn’t abstract.

It’s not theoretical.

It’s confrontational.

Because if the system was always pointing beyond itself…

Then the question isn’t whether it still works.

The question is:

Are you still trusting something… that Scripture itself has already moved past?

Don’t Stop at the Explanation

Most people stop at “Jesus is a better priest.”

But Hebrews isn’t offering a comparison.

It’s presenting a case.

Three verses. Two millennia. One redemptive plan.

If Hebrews 7 feels like a verdict, it’s because it is.

But this chapter isn’t the whole case.

If you listened to my recent conversation with Joel Muddamalle, we spent time in Genesis 14 and Hebrews 7—but there’s one passage we didn’t walk through.

And without it, you miss the thread that ties everything together.

Psalm 110.

Psalm 110 is the most frequently quoted Old Testament text in the New Testament, cited or alluded to over thirty times. Jesus himself cites it in all three Synoptic Gospels to stump the Pharisees.

The writer of Hebrews builds an entire Christological architecture on just two of its verses (which is covered in Melchizedek The Mysterious Priest King: Three Verses That Unveil God’s Redemptive Plan).

And yet for modern readers, the psalm's explosive theological content is often obscured by translation choices that flatten its most remarkable feature: in the very first verse, two distinct divine persons, both referred to by the name YHWH, speak to and about each other.

I wrote earlier about why this makes Psalm 110:1 perhaps the most dangerous verse in the Old Testament. If you haven't read that piece, it's worth pausing there first. The Hebrew behind it changes everything.

But before we reach verse 4, the verse that drops Melchizedek back into the story, we need to set the scene. Because the ground has to be prepared before the shock can land.

A Category Israel Didn’t Have

David writes Psalm 110. And that’s where the tension begins.

David is a king, not a priest. Under the Levitical system, those roles were distinct, guarded, and non-negotiable. Kings did not perform priestly functions. Priests did not wield royal authority. The boundaries weren’t ceremonial preferences, they were constitutional.

When King Uzziah entered the Temple to burn incense, he was struck with leprosy on the spot. When Saul offered a sacrifice before battle, he lost his kingdom.

The line was real, and crossing it had consequences.

And yet, under divine inspiration, David speaks of a future figure who will be both king and priest simultaneously.

That’s not a minor theological nuance.

That’s a category Israel didn’t have.

There was no framework in the Law of Moses for a ruler who combined these two offices. The Levitical system had no slot for this person.

So when David writes it, the reader should feel the strangeness of it. Something is being introduced that the existing system cannot contain.

Legal Language, Not Poetry

Verses 1 through 3 establish the scene with the compressed authority of a royal decree.

Verse 1 opens with a divine conversation, YHWH speaking to David’s Lord, inviting him to share the throne: Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool.

In the Ancient Near East, the right hand of the king was not a place of honor in some ceremonial sense. It was the seat of delegated authority. To sit there was to rule alongside.

Verse 2 extends the image outward, this lord’s scepter goes forth from Zion, and he reigns in the midst of his enemies. Not after they are defeated. In the midst of them.

Verse 3 describes the response of his people: they offer themselves freely, willingly, on the day of his power. The picture is of a king whose subjects don’t need to be conscripted. They come.

And then verse 4 arrives.

And it doesn’t feel like a continuation. It feels like an interruption from heaven itself.

“The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind: you are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.”

This is not a prediction.

This is a covenantal oath.

The Hebrew nishba’, meaning “he has sworn,” paired immediately with welo’ yinnachem, “he will not relent.”

This is an irrevocable, binding declaration.

The kind God makes when he wants to signal that what follows cannot be undone by human failure, political succession, or the passage of time.

What is being declared here is a priesthood that does not come from Levi, does not end with death, and is not subject to the ordinary mechanisms by which priesthoods are inherited or transferred.

Then comes the shock:

Melchizedek reappears.

A Thousand Years of Silence

In Genesis 14, Melchizedek arrives without introduction. No genealogy. No origin. No explanation of who he is or where he came from.

He brings out bread and wine, blesses Abraham, receives a tithe from him and then, just as suddenly, he is gone.

Three verses, and he vanishes from Scripture entirely.

For roughly a thousand years, he is never mentioned again.

And then David, writing under the Spirit, brings him back.

That is not a casual reference.

A thousand years of scriptural silence, and then a psalmist reaches back across all of it to name this figure, not as a historical footnote, but as the defining pattern for the most important priesthood in Israel’s future.

That’s not nostalgia.

That’s a signal.

David is telling the reader: pay attention to Melchizedek.

He is not incidental.

He is the key.

The Thread

Psalm 110 doesn’t just mention Melchizedek, it anchors him. It bridges Genesis 14 to Davidic kingship and pushes forward into messianic expectation. It introduces a priesthood that stands outside lineage, outside law, and outside time itself.

And suddenly, Hebrews makes sense.

A thousand years after David writes Psalm 110, the writer of Hebrews declares that Jesus is a priest according to the order of Melchizedek.

He is not reaching backward randomly, pulling an obscure figure from an isolated story.

He is following a thread that was already there, one woven through Scripture across millennia.

A thread that runs from a mysterious encounter in a valley outside Salem…

through a royal psalm written by a warrior king…

into the fullest theological exposition in the New Testament.

Conclusion

Three texts.

One unbroken line.

Genesis 14 introduces him.

Psalm 110 defines him.

Hebrews 7 reveals him.

This isn’t a side character. This isn’t a footnote. This is a pattern.

And once you see it—you can’t unsee it.

Why AD 33?

Scholars arrive at this date through converging lines of evidence:

• Astronomical data — A Passover (Nisan 14) falling on a Friday aligns with April 3, AD 33.

• Pontius Pilate’s tenure — Governed Judea from AD 26–36.

• Lunar calendar calculations — The Passover full moon confirms the timing.

• Daniel’s 70 Weeks (Daniel 9:24–27) — Calculations—famously developed by Sir Robert Anderson—point remarkably close to AD 33.

Some scholars prefer AD 30.1 But AD 33 presents the strongest convergence of astronomical and chronological data and remains the majority position today.2

Why Today Matters

This is not distant history. Because today, you are not just remembering an event. You are standing—by the calendar—on the same date.

Nearly two millennia removed from a single day that:

• Split history in half.

• Fulfilled texts written centuries apart.

• Marked the decisive moment when the serpent’s head was crushed3 and the nations were reclaimed.4

This is not symbolic proximity. It is chronological alignment.

The Day the Scriptures Took Flesh

There are moments in Scripture that feel prophetic. And then there are moments where prophecy stops feeling like prediction… and starts reading like eyewitness testimony written in advance.

Good Friday is that moment. Because long before Rome perfected crucifixion:

• David described it.

• Isaiah interpreted it.

• And 1,993 years ago today… it happened.

Isaiah 52–53 — The Suffering That Disfigures

Not Symbolic. Lexical. Physical. Isaiah does not speak in abstractions.

Read quickly, it sounds poetic. It isn’t. Because in Hebrew, Isaiah 52–53 is not devotional language. It is lexically precise, legally charged, and physically explicit.

What Isaiah Is Actually Saying

Disfigurement Beyond Recognition

מִשְׁחַת (mishchath) — marred

From shachath — to corrupt, ruin, destroy beyond recognition.5

This is not injury. This is the destruction of form.

The Instrument Rome Used

To understand what produced this disfigurement, Rome must be brought into the text.

Before crucifixion, Jesus was scourged (John 19:1). The instrument used was the flagrum (also flagellum)—a short-handled Roman whip with multiple leather thongs, each embedded at the ends with lead balls, bone fragments, or metal hooks.6

This was not a whip designed to punish. It was designed to destroy tissue.

The metal and bone pieces would dig into the skin on impact. When the thongs were pulled back, they tore through dermis and muscle alike. Roman scourging of this kind could cause hypovolemic shock from blood loss alone, before crucifixion ever began.

Victims were typically bound to a post, back exposed. Two soldiers (lictors) often struck from opposing angles, producing a cross-pattern of lacerations. The progression was consistent: early strikes produced surface wounds; repeated blows drove deeper, eventually exposing underlying tissue and, in severe cases, bone.7

This is what mishchath looks like in history. Isaiah said His form would be destroyed beyond recognition. Rome supplied the instrument.8

Isaiah 53:3–10 — The Rejection, the Wounds, and the Will of God

“He was despised and forsaken of men…
Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows…
But He was pierced through for our transgressions…
And by His stripes we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:3–5)

Rejected as Less Than Human (Isaiah 53:3)

“He was despised and forsaken of men…”

• נִבְזֶה (nibzeh) — despised — treated as worthless9

• חֲדַל אִישִׁים (chadal ishim) — forsaken of men — one from whom humanity withdraws10

This is not mere rejection. This is dehumanization.

The Language of Substitution (Isaiah 53:4)

“Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows…”

• נָשָׂא (nasa) — borne — to lift and carry away guilt11

• חֳלִי (choli) — sickness — physical affliction12

• מַכֹּאֹב (makob) — pain — bodily suffering13

This is not abstract suffering. It is substitutionary language embedded in the verbs themselves.

The Violence of the Text — and the Stripes That Heal (Isaiah 53:5)

“But He was pierced through for our transgressions… crushed for our iniquities…
And by His stripes we are healed.”

• מְחֹלָל (mecholal) — pierced — bored through14

• מְדֻכָּא (medukka) — crushed — pulverized15

• פֶּשַׁע (pesha) — transgressions — willful rebellion16

• עָוֹן (avon) — iniquity — moral distortion17

And then Isaiah adds a word that refuses to let the reader soften the scene:

• חֲבוּרָה (chaburah) — “stripes”
  A wound from beating—a bruise, welt, or laceration inflicted by blows18

This is not poetic softening. It is the precise vocabulary of physical trauma. The original audience did not need explanation. They knew what scourging did to a human body.

Isaiah is not describing symbolic suffering. He is describing visible, violent, bodily wounds.

And then he makes the claim:

“And by His wounds we are healed.”

The Collision (Isaiah 53:6)

“The LORD has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on Him.”

• הִפְגִּיעַ (hifgia) — caused to fall
  From paga — to strike, collide, encounter with force19

God did not gently place sin on Him.

He drove it into Him.

The Will of God (Isaiah 53:10)

“It pleased the LORD to crush Him… to make Him a guilt offering.”

• חָפֵץ (chafetz) — it pleased / willed — deliberate intent20

• דִּכְּאוֹ (dik’o) — to crush — to pulverize21

• אָשָׁם (asham) — guilt offering — a formal sacrificial category22

This was not accidental.

This was not reactive.

This was purposeful, sacrificial, and willed.

The Cumulative Force

When read together, Isaiah 53 is not devotional reflection. It is a forensic, substitutionary, sacrificial record: rejected, burden-bearing, pierced, crushed, beaten, struck, and offered—not metaphorically, but literally. This is not poetry. It is a forensic account. Isaiah described the wounds. Rome supplied the instrument. And in the scourging of Jesus, prophecy was not illustrated—it was executed.

Psalm 22 — The Execution Before It Existed

Psalm 22 was written approximately 1,000 years before Christ’s crucifixion. At the time it was written, crucifixion had not yet been systematized. David had no category for it. And yet, he describes it anyway.

The Opening Cry

“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Psalm 22:1)

Not random. Identification. Jesus is quoting Psalm 22 as he is dying on the cross!

The Worm on the Wood

“I am a worm and not a man” (Psalm 22:6)

תּוֹלַעַת (tola’at) — crimson worm — attaches to wood, dies in place, releases scarlet.

The Physiology

“I am poured out like water… all my bones are out of joint” (Psalm 22:14)

Describes fluid depletion and joint separation, consistent with crucifixion’s mechanical demands on the body.

Dehydration

“My tongue clings to my jaws” (Psalm 22:15)

Jesus: “I thirst.”

The Piercing — Textual Evidence

“They pierced my hands and my feet” (Psalm 22:16)

• Masoretic Text: “like a lion”

• Dead Sea Scrolls: “they pierced”

• Septuagint: “they pierced”

The difference is a single letter. But the earlier textual witnesses confirm the reading:

“They have pierced my hands and my feet.”23

Exposure

“I can count all my bones… they stare at me” (Psalm 22:17)

Public spectacle. Visible skeletal frame.

The Garments

“They divide my garments… cast lots” (Psalm 22:18)

Fulfilled precisely (John 19:24).

The Mockery

“He trusts in the LORD—let Him rescue him” (Psalm 22:8)

Recorded verbatim in Matthew 27:43.

Psalm 22 describes piercing, shock, dehydration, exposure, mockery, and execution mechanics—before crucifixion existed as a Roman institution.

This is not typology.
This is not coincidence.
This is prophecy as evidence.

Closing — The Lamb Who Finished It

Isaiah described the wounds. David described the execution. Rome carried it out.

But the story doesn’t begin on Good Friday. It begins in a manger in Bethlehem.

Jesus Born Where Sacrificial Lambs Were Born

When Mary laid Jesus in a manger in Bethlehem, the location carried weight that was not incidental.

The fields outside Bethlehem were associated in Jewish tradition with the flocks raised for Temple sacrifice. The Mishnah (Shekalim 7:4) indicates that flocks pastured in the region around Bethlehem were designated for Temple offerings, watched by shepherds whose task was to certify lambs as unblemished before they were delivered to Jerusalem.24

These were not ordinary shepherds tending ordinary animals.

When a ewe gave birth, the newborn lamb was immediately examined for defects. If found unblemished, it was wrapped in swaddling cloths, strips of linen bound tightly around the legs and body, and laid in a stone manger. The purpose was protective and precise: a lamb with a broken limb or a wound sustained at birth was disqualified from Temple sacrifice. The wrapping immobilized the animal. It preserved its status as without blemish.

This is the world in which the angel’s announcement entered.25

“This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” (Luke 2:12)

The shepherds did not need directions.

They knew exactly which manger. They knew exactly what swaddling cloths in a manger meant. It was the sign of a lamb set apart: consecrated, protected, and unblemished.

And here was the Son of God, wrapped the same way, laid in the same place.

The Lamb of God was born where the sacrificial lambs were born. Wrapped the way the sacrificial lambs were wrapped.26

Killed When the Lambs Were Killed

He was not only born in their place. He died on their day.

Exodus 12 had established the pattern a millennium and a half earlier:

“Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year… the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it at twilight.” (Exodus 12:5–6)

Passover. The fourteenth of Nisan. The day Jesus was crucified.27

John’s Gospel is precise: the lambs were being slaughtered in the Temple courts at the same hours Jesus was dying on the cross outside the city walls.

“Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed” (John 19:14; cf. 1 Corinthians 5:7).28

This is not typology imposed in retrospect. This is the calendar of God.

The Veil That Tore

Then, at the moment of His death, something happened inside the Temple.

“And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.” (Matthew 27:51)

The veil was not decorative. It was structural, a barrier of theological force.

Woven with cherubim (Exodus 26:31), it stood at the entrance to the Holy of Holies, the inner chamber where the presence of God dwelt. The cherubim were a deliberate echo of Genesis 3:24, the same guardians placed at the gate of Eden after the Fall, blocking the way back to the presence of God.29

One man passed through that veil each year: the High Priest, on the Day of Atonement, carrying the blood of a sacrifice (Leviticus 16:2, 11–15). Anyone else who entered died.

The veil was the boundary between a holy God and a sinful humanity. And when Jesus died, it was torn, not from the bottom up, as a man would tear it, but from the top to the bottom. God tore it.30

Jeremiah had promised this day:31

“I will make a new covenant… I will put my law within them and write it on their hearts… for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.” (Jeremiah 31:31–34)

Zechariah had glimpsed what it would mean, the day when the inscription “Holy to the LORD” would no longer be confined to the High Priest’s headpiece alone, but would belong to ordinary vessels, ordinary people, ordinary life (Zechariah 14:20–21).32

The barrier was not lowered. It was destroyed.

The Plan All Along

Jesus Christ was born where sacrificial lambs were born. He was killed on the day the lambs were killed. And when He died, the veil that kept humanity from God’s presence was torn open—permanently—from above.

This is not coincidence. This is the architecture of redemption. One Author. One story. One Lamb. Born to die. Dying to open what had been shut since Eden.

What was written still stands. What was shut is now open. It is finished.

Approximately six or seven months before His crucifixion, Jesus walked His disciples into one of the darkest spiritual locations in the ancient world—and made His declaration there.

The Place No Rabbi Would Choose

The region was Caesarea Philippi, in Bashan. At the southwest base of Mount Hermon.

A place known for:

• Pagan worship and sacrifice

• A temple to the god Pan—a Greek deity associated with the wild, untamed world or chaos (it’s where we get the word panic)

• A massive cave believed by the ancients to be the entrance to the underworld, where sacrifices were offered into its depths

• A site known as the Gates of Hades—the Gates of Hell

Jesus brings His disciples here. Not to avoid it. Not to comment on it. But to confront it.

Authors Note: To understand what’s about to take place it is extremely important to understand the context surrounding this event. Many of you have likely read this verse many times without realizing the context in which it was given. In addition to Caesarea Philippi being affiliated with the god Pan, it’s important to understand that Caesarea Philippi is located in the region of Bashan. Bashan was not a neutral region in the biblical imagination. It was known as the land of the Rephaim—the ancient giants—ruled by Og, described as the last of his kind (Deuteronomy 3:11). These figures became associated with the broader memory of rebellion against God, often linked conceptually to Genesis 6 traditions and the rise of hostile powers. Theologically, Bashan came to represent more than geography—it was a landscape marked by opposition. Psalm 68 even portrays it as a rival mountain, set in contrast to Zion itself (Psalm 68:15–16). In other words, it was a place long associated with defiance, power, and the enemies of God.

Why Mount Hermon Matters

Mount Hermon is not just a geographical detail. In Hebrew, Hermon (חֶרְמוֹן – ḥermōn) is widely connected to the root חרם (ḥerem)—a word used throughout the Old Testament for something devoted irrevocably to God, often through judgment.

It is the language of:

• Things placed under the ban

• Things set apart permanently

• Things given over to destruction (Joshua 6; Leviticus 27:28)

This is not ordinary holiness. This is something set apart in a final, irreversible way.

Which means Hermon can carry the sense of a place marked for divine reckoning.

And in Second Temple Jewish thought, Hermon was remembered as the place where the Watchers descended and rebelled. A place where heaven’s order was violated. A place associated not with faithfulness—but with cosmic corruption.

So Jesus doesn’t just take them somewhere dark. He takes them somewhere where iniquity was rife, a place long associated with the rebellion of the Watchers.

Who Do People Say That The Son Of Man Is?

Standing in that place, He asks:

“Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”1

The apostles respond:

John the Baptist.
Elijah.
Jeremiah.
One of the prophets.

Then He turns the question toward them:

“But who do you say that I am?”2

Not in safety. Not in abstraction. But at the edge of what people in the Ancient Near East believed was the realm of the dead.

The Confession That Cuts Through the Darkness

Peter answers:

“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”3

That word matters.

Living.

Because all around them were altars to gods that did not speak…
did not act…
did not live.

Dead gods. Silent gods. Powerless gods.

And in that place—at the mouth of death itself—Peter declares: The living God is standing here.

What Jesus Says Next Changes Everything

Jesus responds immediately:

“Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.”4

That opening line is easy to pass over.

It shouldn’t be.

“Simon Bar-Jonah.”

In the ancient Jewish world, a name was never just a label. It was identity. To be called “son of” someone was to be defined by them—your origin, your place, your inheritance, your frame of reference. Your father told the world who you were.

So when Jesus says “Bar-Jonah”—son of Jonah—He is doing something precise.

He is grounding Peter in his human identity.

And then, in the very next breath, He contrasts it:

“Flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.”5

The contrast is the point.

You are the son of Jonah by birth. But what you just said…

That did not come from your father.

It came from mine.

For a moment, Peter is standing in a different line of knowing.

A different source.

A different family of revelation.

Two Ways of Knowing

Jesus draws a hard line here—one that most people miss.

There are two categories of knowledge:

• Flesh and blood knowledge — what can be reasoned, studied, observed, inherited, or taught

• Revealed knowledge — what the Father discloses directly

Peter did not arrive at “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” by being smarter than the other disciples. He wasn’t more theologically educated. He wasn’t running a tighter exegetical method. The content of his confession was given to him.

What This Means for Faith

This is one of the most underappreciated statements in the entire New Testament. Because it reshapes how we understand belief itself. You cannot reason someone into this confession.

You can explain.
You can argue.
You can teach.

But you cannot produce it. Because at its core, saving knowledge is not discovered—It is revealed.

And in that moment, standing at the gates of death, Peter does not discover truth…

He receives it.

The Rock—What Jesus Actually Said

In Matthew 16:18, Jesus responds:

“And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”6

This is not repetition. This is precision. Two different words. Two different meanings.

Here is where an English translation of the Bible robs you of the richness and wordplay of the Greek. Jesus says, “You are Petros (Πέτρος), and upon this petra (πέτρα) I will build my church.”

This is one of the most debated phrases in all of church history, and the debate itself is instructive.

The two words are related but distinct. Petros is masculine and typically refers to a movable stone or a piece of rock, i.e., a boulder you could throw. Petra is feminine and refers to bedrock — the massive, immovable foundation stone, the living rock beneath the surface.

Jesus gives Simon the name Petros — a stone, a rock-man. Then he says the church will be built on petra — bedrock.

The Catholic tradition reads this as Jesus declaring Peter himself to be the foundation of the church — the first pope, the source of apostolic succession.

The Protestant tradition has generally countered that the petra refers either to Peter’s confession (you are the Christ — that truth is the bedrock) or to Christ himself as the true rock (1 Corinthians 10:4, 1 Peter 2:8).

Jesus is not doing one thing here — he is doing several simultaneously:

1. He is renaming Simon. The act of renaming in the Old Testament always signals transformation and new vocation — Abram to Abraham, Jacob to Israel, Saul to Paul. Simon is being made into something. He is becoming Petros — a rock-man, formed for a purpose.

2. He is building his church on something that Peter’s confession has pointed to — namely, the identity of Jesus himself as the Christ, the Son of the living God. The petra is not Peter’s personality or his authority in isolation; it is the revealed truth that Peter has just spoken. That Jesus is the living God!

3. He is giving Peter a genuine, irreplaceable role. Peter is not incidental to what follows. He will preach the first sermon at Pentecost. He will be the first to take the gospel to the Gentiles (Acts 10). He will write two epistles that will anchor the church’s theology of suffering and holiness. The commission here is real.

The critical insight is that petra and Petros are related but not identical. Peter is a stone—formed from the bedrock, but not the bedrock itself. Christ is the cornerstone (Ephesians 2:20) and the bedrock is the revealed truth about who Christ is.

In the 24 hours leading up to the crucificition, Peter will deny Jesus three times. The petra doesn’t crack when Petros does — and that is the point.

The Gates of Hell Shall Not Prevail

This phrase is almost universally misread, and the misreading has had catastrophic consequences for how Christians understand their mission.

The popular reading is defensive: The church is under siege from hell, but don’t worry — the gates will hold. The church as a bunker. The church as a fortress pulling up the drawbridge against the demonic onslaught.

This reading gets the image exactly backwards.

Gates do not attack. Gates defend. Gates are stationary.

Gates are the defensive architecture of a city. When Jesus says the gates of Hell (or Hades) will not prevail against the church, he is describing a scene where the church is the advancing army and Hades is the fortified city under siege. The church is marching on the gates of death — and those gates will not hold.

This is a military image of conquest, not survival.

The word Hades (ᾅδης) in the first-century Jewish and Greek imagination referred to the realm of the dead — the place where the dead go, the underworld, the domain of death’s authority. The “gates of Hades” would have been understood as the entrance to that realm, the boundary between the living and the dead, the lock on death’s prison.

Jesus is standing there on enemy ground and announcing:

• Death’s domain will be breached

• Its authority will be broken

• Its captives will not remain

Because in a matter of months—He will go there Himself, free Abraham’s bosom and march past the 200 watchers imprisoned in Tartarus. Then He will come back out.

This reframes everything about mission:

The church does not huddle together hoping the culture doesn’t overwhelm it. The church moves into the culture precisely because death’s kingdom has no gate strong enough to stop it.

Evangelism is not recruiting people to a safe community. It is pulling people out of a kingdom that is already losing its structural integrity because the King has already broken through it himself (cf. Revelation 1:18 — “I hold the keys of Death and Hades”).

The resurrection of Jesus was the first breach of the gate. The church, animated by the same Spirit, is the ongoing siege operation.

Jesus chose this spot to make this declaration. He is standing at the enemy’s front door—and announcing the collapse of its gates.

The Transfiguration

Matthew writes:

“And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.” 7

They are already at the base of Hermon. And now they go up.

On that mountain:

• Jesus is transfigured

• His face shines like the sun

• Moses and Elijah appear

• The Father speaks

This is not just revelation.

This is reclamation.

The place remembered for rebellion…

Now becomes the place where the Son is revealed in glory.

What was once associated with defilement…

Now becomes holy ground.

Final Reflection

Jesus did not avoid the darkest places. He walked directly into them. And announced their end. The question is not whether He is advancing.

The question is whether you recognize it—and whether you are standing with Him when He does.

Genesis 14.

It’s easy to read it as history.
A battle. A rescue. A meeting.

But it’s more than that.

Cosmic Geography and Warfare

Genesis 14 starts off by setting the stage for the battle between the Four Kings against the Five. But let’s dig into the description.

Now the Valley of Siddim was full of bitumen pits, and as the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, some fell into them, and the rest fled to the hill country.1

Bitumen is a dark, muddy, tar like substance that bubbles up from the ground. It burns, it’s sticky, consuming, and inescapable once contacted. In the Ancient Near Eastern cosmology, black substances bubbling up from beneath the earth were associated with the underworld — the realm below. In the Epic of Gilgamesh, the flood survivor Utnapishtim used bitumen to waterproof his ark.

Moses is setting the stage for the battle of the Four Kings against the Five. The Valley of Siddim… the battlefield, is filled with darkness, chaos, and the earth swallowing kings. And Moses, writing with full knowledge of what this valley would become, is not giving us incidental geography. He knows that within 14 years, God will rain fire and brimstone on this entire region, wiping Gomorrah and her sister cities off the face of the earth. The bitumen pits are not a minor detail — they are a foreshadowing. Kings falling into them while attempting to escape is a preview of what’s coming to the entire region. The battlefield itself is already marked for judgment.

So the enemy took all the possessions of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their provisions, and went their way. They also took Lot, the son of Abram’s brother, who was dwelling in Sodom, and his possessions and went their way.2

It’s after this incident that Abram along with 318 of his trained men, tracked down the four kings just North of Damascus to Hobah and defeated them, reclaiming Lot and the spoils of war. It is upon that victory that Abram arrives to the Valley of Shaveh (עֵמֶק שָׁוֵה).

Abram Returns Victorious

Shaveh in Hebrew means “level ground,” “the plain” or “equal ground” and is also called the King’s Valley. The dual name is significant — it is both the place of leveling/equality and the place of the king. That name is loaded for what’s about to happen.

“After his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley). And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. (He was a priest of God Most High.) And he blessed him and said, ‘Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!” And Abram gave him a tenth of everything. And the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the persons, but take the goods for yourself.” But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have lifted my hand to the LORD, God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth, that I would not take a thread or a sandal strap or anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich.” I will take nothing but what the young men have eaten and the share of the men who went with me.”3

And then the moment shifts.

Fresh off his defeat of the four kings—having reclaimed his nephew Lot and the spoils of war—Abram is approached by two kings, the king of Sodom and the king of Salem.

It is on this plain, this level ground, this King’s Valley, that the narrative suddenly shifts. The chaos of the Valley of Siddim, the bitumen pits, the swallowed kings, the plundered cities — all of it has been the opening act. Because out of the aftermath of war, on ground whose very name speaks of kings and equality, a figure steps forward that the text has not prepared us for.

And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High.”4

No introduction. No genealogy. No origin. He simply appears.

From darkness to light. From chaos to peace.

The cosmic geography of Genesis 14 is not accidental — Moses has been building to this moment from the first mention of bitumen pits. The battlefield was always just the stage. Melchizedek is the main event.

It is in this moment… Abram is about to be tested.

Echoes of the Garden of Eden

Abram is now faced with a choice…

He has a choice between Bera, the king of Sodom who represents the world, its riches, power and wealth. Or Melchizedek, the king of Salem, who offers bread, wine and a blessing. Representing obedience to God Most High.

Let’s look at the narrative structure of Genesis 14:17-18 a little closer.

1. The king of Sodom went out to meet Abram first.

2. Sudden narrative interruption (extremely unusual in Hebrew narrative).

3. Melchizedek appears.

4. Blesses Abram.

5. Receives a tenth from Abram.

6. Only after this does Abram speak to the king of Sodom.

This all signals that Melchizedek is the theological center of the story.

One king offers reward.
The other king offers blessing.

And in that moment—Abraham chooses.

He chooses to give a tenth of his possessions to Melchizedek. That’s not just generosity. That’s alignment. Then he refuses the king of Sodom.

It’s a decision about which kingdom he belongs to.

What struck me today is how familiar this pattern is.

In Eden, humanity was given a choice. Two trees. Two paths. Trust God and live — or reach for something else and die. In Genesis 14, Abram stands in that same tension. Two kings. Two offers. Two kingdoms. But this time, the man gets it right.

Here’s the part most people miss: In the very next chapter, in Genesis 15, God seals his covenant promise with Abram.

After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.”5

Moses goes on to add:

And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “so shall your offspring be.” And he believed the LORD, and he counted it to him as righteousness.6

The Hebrew word for righteousness that Moses uses is צְדָקָה (tsedaqah) — righteousness.

As I cover in the book, Melchizedek’s name — מַלְכִּי־צֶדֶק breaks into two parts: מַלְכִּי (malki) — my king / king of, and צֶדֶק (tsedeq) — righteousness. Together: “my king is righteousness” or “king of righteousness.”

The connection:

Tsedaqah and tsedeq share the same Hebrew root — צדק (ts-d-q). They are the same word in different grammatical forms. Tsedaqah is the noun form commonly used for righteousness as a quality or gift. Tsedeq is the more concentrated, foundational form — righteousness as an intrinsic attribute.

The theological payload:

Abram encounters Melchizedek — the king of righteousness — in Genesis 14. He honors him, aligns with him, receives his blessing. Then in Genesis 15, immediately after, God credits Abram with tsedaqah — righteousness — based on faith.

The encounter with the king of righteousness precedes and arguably frames the imputation of righteousness. That is not accidental sequencing. Moses is doing something deliberate there.

It begs the question:

Would Abram have been rewarded by God and given the covenant promise had he chosen the king of Sodom and his offer over Melchizedek’s offer?

I didn’t fully develop this angle in the book—but after today’s conversation, I’m convinced it matters more than we think.

Because the question Abraham faced… is still the question we face:

What are you aligning yourself with?

The kingdom of Sodom… or the kingdom of God Most High?

That verse was Psalm 110.

This is not a minor passage of Scripture. In fact, Psalm 110 is widely recognized as the most quoted or alluded-to Old Testament passage in the New Testament, appearing roughly twenty-five times across the writings of the apostles.1

And the mystery hidden inside it changes how we understand the Messiah.

A Verse Most Readers Pass Over

Psalm 110 opens with a statement that seems simple at first glance:

“The LORD says to my Lord:
‘Sit at my right hand,
until I make your enemies your footstool.’”
— Psalm 110:1 (ESV)

At first glance it reads like poetic language about God and the Messiah.

But when we look at the Hebrew text, something extraordinary appears.

The Hebrew Behind the Verse

The verse contains two distinct titles.

YHWH (יהוה) — the covenant name of the God of Israel.

la’adoni (לאדני) — “my Lord,” a title used for a superior ruler.

So the verse literally reads:

“YHWH says to my Lord.”

David is describing a conversation between two figures.

One is clearly the God of Israel.

But the second figure is David’s Lord — someone greater than David himself.

And that raises an unavoidable question.

How could Israel’s greatest king call someone else his Lord?

A Mystery Ancient Judaism Already Recognized

This tension in Scripture did not originate with Christianity.

During the Second Temple period, Jewish interpreters already wrestled with passages that appeared to reveal more than one figure sharing divine authority. Texts such as Psalm 110, Daniel 7, and the appearances of the Angel of the LORD raised profound theological questions.

In Daniel 7, the prophet describes a heavenly vision in which “one like a son of man” approaches the Ancient of Days and receives everlasting dominion and worship.2

This presented a difficult interpretive problem.

How could Scripture portray two figures in heaven sharing divine authority while still affirming that the LORD is one?

Biblical scholar Michael S. Heiser described this pattern as the “Two Powers in Heaven” tradition — the recognition within ancient Jewish thought that certain passages appeared to depict two Yahweh figures: the unseen God and a second figure who bears His authority, name, and presence.3

These discussions circulated within Jewish theology during the Second Temple period.

But something changed after the rise of Christianity.

Early Christians proclaimed that Jesus of Nazareth was the exalted figure seated beside God in passages such as Psalm 110 and Daniel 7. As Jewish followers of Jesus began identifying Him with this divine figure, rabbinic authorities increasingly rejected interpretations that suggested more than one divine person sharing heavenly authority.

Few readers realize that this entire discussion was widely known in ancient Judaism.

What had once been debated within Jewish theology became labeled the “Two Powers in Heaven” doctrine and was eventually condemned as heresy in rabbinic literature.4

Readers interested in exploring this tradition more deeply should know that an excellent resource is available. Biblical scholar Michael S. Heiser taught an entire course on the subject titled Two Powers in Judaism in Second Temple Texts.

The course includes more than four hours of teaching across eight modules, examining the biblical passages and Jewish literature that shaped the “Two Powers in Heaven” discussion.

In other words, long before the New Testament was written, Jewish interpreters already recognized that certain passages of Scripture appeared to reveal a second divine figure alongside YHWH.

And Psalm 110 was one of the most important of them.

The Question That Silenced the Pharisees

Centuries later, Jesus brought this very verse into a debate with the Pharisees.

He asked them:

“What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?”

— Matthew 22:42 (ESV)

They replied:

“The son of David.”

Then Jesus quoted Psalm 110 and asked:

“How is it then that David, in the Spirit, calls him Lord?”
— Matthew 22:43 (ESV)

The logic was devastating.

If the Messiah is merely David’s descendant, why does David call him Lord?

In the ancient world, a father did not call his descendant “my Lord.”

Something far greater is happening in Psalm 110.

The Messiah is not merely David’s son.

He is someone greater than David himself.

Matthew records what happened next:

“And no one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.”
— Matthew 22:46 (ESV)

One verse.
One question.
Silence.

A Throne Beside God

Psalm 110 continues with an even more astonishing declaration:

“Sit at my right hand…”
— Psalm 110:1 (ESV)

In the ancient world, the right hand of the king was the seat of shared authority.

This is not merely proximity to God.

It is participation in divine rule.

David’s Lord (Adoni) is invited to sit beside YHWH Himself.

Few passages in the Old Testament make a clearer claim about the divine identity of the Messiah.

The Priest Who Was Never Supposed to Exist

Then the psalm adds something even more surprising:

“The LORD has sworn
and will not change his mind,
‘You are a priest forever
after the order of Melchizedek.’”
— Psalm 110:4 (ESV)

This statement breaks Israel’s priestly categories.

The priests of Israel came from the tribe of Levi.

But this priest does not.

He belongs to the mysterious order of Melchizedek — the priest-king who appears briefly in Genesis 14.

And unlike the Levitical priesthood, this priesthood is forever.

This is why Psalm 110 became central to the theology of the early church. The New Testament repeatedly connects Psalm 110 with Jesus’ resurrection, exaltation, and eternal priesthood, especially in the book of Hebrews.

Why Psalm 110 Is So Dangerous

Psalm 110 quietly reveals three extraordinary claims about the Messiah:

He is greater than David.
He shares authority beside God.
And he holds an eternal priesthood outside the Levitical system.

This is why Psalm 110 became the most cited Old Testament passage in the New Testament.

It forces every reader to wrestle with a question that still echoes today:

Who exactly is David’s Lord?

And why does his priesthood belong to the order of Melchizedek?

Understanding that mystery requires going back to the brief but profound encounter between Abraham and the priest-king Melchizedek in Genesis 14.

It turns out that the entire mystery of Psalm 110 begins there.

And once that encounter is understood, the identity of David’s Lord becomes far clearer than most readers have ever realized.

The priesthood of Jesus didn’t begin at the cross.

It was already there… fourteen chapters into Genesis.

Most readers miss it.

But once you see it, the entire structure of Scripture starts to shift.

That’s exactly what makes Genesis 14 so surprising.

In Genesis 14, a priest-king named Melchizedek suddenly appears, blesses Abraham, receives a tithe… and then disappears from the narrative.

No genealogy.
No explanation.
No recorded death.

Yet centuries later King David writes something astonishing:

“The Lord has sworn and will not change His mind,
You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.”1

That statement quietly overturns the expectation that the Messiah’s priesthood would come through the Levitical system established at Sinai.

When the author of Hebrews picks up the same thread, he argues that Jesus fulfills an earlier priesthood — one that existed long before the Law itself.

Which raises a remarkable question:

Why would God introduce a priest-king before the Law even existed?

Most readers never stop to ask that question.

But once you do, the entire framework of Scripture starts to shift.

I did not write a book about Melchizedek because he is an interesting footnote in Genesis.

I wrote it because three verses in Genesis 14 carry theological weight far beyond their brevity—and because the New Testament treats them as foundational to understanding Christ’s priesthood.

• the interpretive traditions that have wrestled with this figure for centuries

I am a trial attorney, and I build cases for a living. That discipline—examining evidence, testing competing explanations, and tracing patterns across time—shaped the method of this book.

I am also a seminary student pursuing a Master of Arts in Biblical Studies at Redemption Seminary. This work engages the original languages and the ancient Near Eastern context carefully and deliberately.

Every claim is anchored in the text.
Every conclusion flows from Scripture’s own argument.

What This Book Is Not

This is not speculative theology.
It is not sensationalism.
It is not a devotional gloss over a mysterious name.

It takes Melchizedek as seriously as Hebrews does—as seriously as Psalm 110 does—and as seriously as Abraham did when he gave a tenth of everything.

If the biblical authors treat this figure as structurally significant, then he deserves sustained attention.

Why It Matters

Hebrews makes an extraordinary claim:

Christ’s priesthood does not follow Aaron.
It follows Melchizedek.

A priesthood that predates Sinai.
A priesthood that operates apart from genealogy.
A priesthood grounded not in law, but in divine oath.

That claim reshapes how we understand covenant, mediation, and access to God.

This is not a peripheral issue.
It is central to the logic of redemption.

If we do not understand Melchizedek, we risk missing why Christ’s priesthood is described as eternal—and why the Levitical system is presented as provisional.

When traced carefully, the pattern reveals a coherence that spans millennia.

I wrote it because I believe these three verses illuminate something profound about how God structures redemptive history.

Most readers of Genesis pass over the appearance of Melchizedek in a few seconds. Yet the New Testament authors return to those same verses and treat them as foundational. The book traces that tension carefully—following the thread from Genesis to Psalm 110 to Hebrews—allowing Scripture itself to explain why this figure matters.

The case is assembled.
The evidence is weighed.
The argument is traced canonically.

Explore the Book

God stands in a courtroom. The defendants are not human.

In recent decades, scholars such as Michael S. Heiser have helped recover what is often called the “Divine Council” worldview of the Old Testament—a framework in which God presides over a structured spiritual realm populated by subordinate divine beings.1 While this concept may sound foreign to modern Western ears, it is deeply rooted in the Hebrew text itself and assumed by the biblical authors. Psalm 82 is one of the clearest windows into that worldview.

“God has taken His place in the divine counsel;
in the midst of the gods He holds judgment.”2

Read that again.

God—Elohim—takes His position in His assembly.
And He judges in the midst of the elohim.

If that does not slow you down, it should.

Because Psalm 82 describes something most modern readers have been trained to ignore or explain away: God presiding over an assembly of divine beings and holding them accountable for how they have governed the nations.

This is not mythology imported into the Bible.

This is the Bible.

And until you reckon with what it actually says, an entire layer of Scripture remains invisible.

The Word We Don’t Know What to Do With

The difficulty begins with elohim.

Most Christians are taught that elohim simply means “God”—singular, capital G, referring to Yahweh. And it often does. But elohim is not a proper name. It is a term describing a being whose nature is spiritual rather than embodied.

Context determines whether the word refers to Yahweh—the uncreated, sovereign God of the universe—or to other spiritual beings who are decidedly not Him.

The Hebrew Bible uses elohim for:

• The “sons of God” (bene elohim) in Job 1:6

• The heavenly host in 1 Kings 22:19–22

• The beings judged in Psalm 82

• Even the deceased Samuel in 1 Samuel 28:13

Only one Elohim is uncreated.

The rest are contingent.

That distinction is everything.

The Courtroom Scene

Psalm 82 opens in a courtroom—but not an earthly one.

God, the Most High, takes His stand in adat-El, the assembly of God. A heavenly council. A convocation of delegated authorities.

And they are under indictment.

“How long will you judge unjustly
And show partiality to the wicked?”3

The charge is moral failure in governance.

They were supposed to defend the weak.
Protect the fatherless.
Uphold the cause of the afflicted.

Instead, they enabled injustice.

“They have neither knowledge nor understanding,
They walk around in darkness;
All the foundations of the earth are shaken.”4

When spiritual authorities become corrupt, the consequences are not contained.

The foundations of the earth shake because the governing structure of the unseen realm has fractured. Scripture assumes a layered creation where delegated authority is real—and where its abuse destabilizes the world below it.

The Sentence

Then comes the verdict:

“I said, ‘You are gods,
And all of you are sons of the Most High.
Nevertheless you will die like men
And fall like any one of the princes.’” (Psalm 82:6–7, NASB 2020)

God affirms their status—“you are gods”—while pronouncing their judgment.

They possessed delegated authority.

They abused it.

And now they will fall.

The Divine Council convened.
The verdict was rendered.

The Backstory: Deuteronomy 32

Psalm 82 assumes the framework laid out in Deuteronomy 32.

“When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance,
When He divided mankind,
He fixed the borders of the peoples
According to the number of the sons of God.”5

The Dead Sea Scrolls preserve the reading “sons of God,” not “sons of Israel.” This textual detail reshapes how one reads the Old Testament’s spiritual geography.

After Babel, the nations were divided and assigned under the oversight of the bene elohim.

But one nation was retained directly:

“But the LORD’s portion is His people;
Jacob His allotted heritage.”6

Israel was direct-rule territory.

The nations were governed under delegated authority.

Psalm 82 is the reckoning of those delegated rulers.

Why Jesus Quoted This Psalm

In John 10:34, Jesus responds to an accusation of blasphemy by quoting Psalm 82:

“Is it not written in your Law, ‘I SAID, YOU ARE GODS’?”7

He does not retreat.

He escalates.

If Scripture calls these beings elohim, then the charge that He uses divine language is not so easily dismissed.

But there is something deeper.

Psalm 82 depicts God standing in the assembly and pronouncing judgment.

In John 10, Jesus identifies Himself with the Father in a way that forces the question: Is He one of the judged—or the Judge?

The stones did not drop because they misunderstood Him.

They tightened their grip because they understood too well.

Why This Matters

Psalm 82 reveals the supernatural worldview assumed throughout Scripture.

When Paul speaks of “rulers” and “authorities,” he is not inventing categories.
When Daniel describes the “prince of Persia,” he is not speaking metaphorically.
When Christ is declared seated “far above all rule and authority and power and dominion,”8 it is hierarchical language.

Christ did not merely forgive individuals.

He disarmed rulers.
He exposed authorities.
He reclaimed nations.

The psalm that prophesied judgment upon corrupt spiritual rulers is the psalm Jesus quoted when accused of blasphemy.

And the Judge stepped into history.

The Psalm Ends with a Prayer

Psalm 82 closes:

“Arise, O God, judge the earth;
For You shall inherit all the nations!”9

The nations once delegated.
The nations misruled.
The nations corrupted.

They will not remain so.

Not another steward.
Not another delegate.

God Himself.

The Council convened.
The verdict was pronounced.
The inheritance awaits reclamation.

And the One who quoted this psalm in the temple courtyard is the One who will inherit the nations.

The Judge put on flesh.

And the nations are being reclaimed.

It was a single sentence. Seven words in English. Five in Greek. And it nearly got Him killed on the spot.

“Before Abraham was, I AM.” (John 8:58)

The response was immediate. No debate. No clarifying question. No rabbinical back-and-forth.

They picked up stones.

They understood exactly what He had said — even if most modern readers do not.

What We Miss

To a twenty-first-century reader, “Before Abraham was, I AM” sounds like a statement about age. Jesus existed before Abraham. Ancient. Pre-existent. Impressive.

But men do not execute someone for claiming to be old.

They picked up stones because a man standing in front of them—flesh, bone, dust on His sandals—had just claimed to be the God of the burning bush.

To understand why, you have to hear what they heard.

The Name Behind the Name

Fourteen centuries earlier, Moses stood before a bush that burned without being consumed. From the fire came a voice. And Moses asked the only logical question:

Who are You?

The answer defined Israel’s theology from that moment forward:

“I AM WHO I AM… Say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” (Exodus 3:14)

In Hebrew: ehyeh asher ehyeh.

Not a title.
Not a metaphor.
A declaration of self-existence.

God did not say “I was.”
He did not say “I will be.”
He said I AM—an eternal present tense that refuses the constraints of time.

This was not merely God’s name. It was His nature.

A being who does not move through time as we do.
A being who is not conditioned by past or future.
A being whose existence depends on nothing outside Himself.

Israel understood this. By the first century, the divine name was treated with such reverence that it was not spoken aloud. In synagogue reading it was replaced with Adonai—Lord—because the Name carried weight.

So when Jesus opened His mouth in the temple and said what He said, this was not casual biography.

It was theological detonation.

The Grammar of Divinity

The Greek text of John 8:58 is precise—and deliberately jarring:

πρὶν Ἀβραὰμ γενέσθαι ἐγώ εἰμι
Prin Abraam genesthai, ego eimi.

Literally:

“Before Abraham came into being, I am.”

Notice the structure.

γενέσθαι (genesthai)—“to come into existence.”
Aorist infinitive. A completed event in time. Abraham became. He had a beginning.

Then the sentence pivots.

ἐγώ εἰμι (ego eimi)—“I am.”
Present tense.

Not “I was.”
Not “I existed.”
Not even “I have been.”

I am.

Grammatically, it is unexpected. If Jesus merely meant to claim pre-existence, He could have said, “Before Abraham was, I was.” The Greek language had the tools for that.

He did not use them.

Instead, He used the very construction found in the Greek translation of Exodus 3:14—the Septuagint—the Bible of the first-century Jewish world:

ἐγώ εἰμι.

Abraham came into being.
Jesus simply is.

One verb describes created existence. The other describes unbounded, ongoing being.

The sentence was built so that no faithful Jew could miss the implication.

They picked up stones because Leviticus 24:16 was clear: Blasphemy against the Name demands death.

Unless it wasn’t blasphemy.
Unless it was revelation.

Not the First Time

John 8:58 was not an isolated statement. It was a crescendo.

Throughout John’s Gospel, Jesus repeatedly uses ego eimi:

“I am the bread of life.”
“I am the light of the world.”
“I am the door.”
“I am the good shepherd.”
“I am the resurrection and the life.”
“I am the way, the truth, and the life.”
“I am the true vine.”

Each statement builds tension. Each layers identity upon function.

Then in John 8:58, the predicate disappears.

No metaphor.
No image.
Just the Name.

And it happens again in the garden.

When the arresting soldiers ask for Jesus of Nazareth, He answers:

ἐγώ εἰμι. (John 18:6)

John records what happened next without commentary:

They fell backward to the ground.

Armed men collapse at two words.

For a moment, the glory leaks through.

More Than Temporal Priority

Jesus was not merely claiming to predate Abraham. He was claiming a fundamentally different category of existence.

Abraham was born.
Abraham died.
Abraham lived within created time.

Jesus does not.

This is what theology calls aseity — self-existence. The quality of depending on nothing for one’s being.

Everything else is contingent.

Angels.
Patriarchs.
Empires.
Stars.

But the one who says “I AM” is not contingent.

He is the uncaused cause.
The ground of all being.
The reason anything exists at all.

And He was standing in the temple courts wearing sandals.

The incarnation is not the story of a man who achieved divinity.

It is the story of the eternal I AM who stepped into the world He created—not because He needed to become something, but because we needed Him to come.

Why They Picked Up Stones

They were not confused.

They were not overreacting.

They were applying the law as they understood it.

If a mere man utters the divine Name and applies it to himself, that is blasphemy.

But if the I AM has taken on flesh…

Then the temple was standing in front of them.

The burning bush was speaking in human voice.

The covenant God of Abraham was looking at them through human eyes.

And that possibility was more dangerous than stones.

Why It Still Matters

“Before Abraham was, I AM” is not a trivia question for theology students.

It is a dividing line.

If Jesus is who He claimed to be, then every word He spoke carries the authority of the voice from Sinai. Every promise is backed by self-existent power. Every claim about forgiveness, resurrection, and judgment rests on uncreated being.

And if He spoke in the present tense intentionally, then He is not confined to the first century.

He is.

Still.

The Pharisees understood the weight of those words.

They picked up stones.

The question is whether we understand it—and what we will do when we hear it.

Hebrews doesn’t do that.

Hebrews starts running and never slows down. By chapter five, the author is already deep into an argument about priesthood—specifically, a priesthood that predates Moses, transcends Levi, and operates on principles Israel had never seen institutionalized.

And then he stops. Mid-argument. And says this:

“Concerning him we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.” (Hebrews 5:11, NASB)

Other translations don’t soften it.

The NLT:

“It is difficult to explain, especially since you are spiritually dull.”

The KJV:

“Ye are dull of hearing.”

The Greek word is νωθροί (nōthroi).

Not unintelligent.
Not undereducated.
Not lacking access.

Sluggish.
Spiritually complacent.
Lazy.

The author is saying: I have something profound to show you, but you’ve let your minds go soft.

This is not a gentle pastoral nudge.

This is a rebuke.

The Argument He Almost Withheld

The placement makes it explosive.

He has just introduced a priest-king whose significance he calls “hard to explain.” He has more to say. Much more.

But he hesitates.

Not because the content is uncertain.
Not because the evidence is weak.
Not because the doctrine is unstable.

Because his readers have stopped doing the work required to receive it.

He continues:

“For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God… and you have come to need milk and not solid food.” (Hebrews 5:12)

Milk is for infants.

Solid food is for the mature.

And the author is holding solid food—a revelation about priesthood, identity, and the architecture of redemption—but his audience is still reaching for the bottle.

He is not questioning their salvation.

He is questioning their growth.

A Modern Problem

It would be comforting to relegate Hebrews 5:11 to the first century.

Those early Jewish believers were under pressure. The temple still stood. The pull of the old system was strong. They were confused.

But the author doesn’t diagnose confusion.

He diagnoses complacency.

And if that rebuke applied to believers raised in the Hebrew Scriptures—who heard the Torah read weekly—what would he say to a generation that treats the Old Testament as optional background material?

We have more access to Scripture than any generation in history.

Multiple translations.
Lexicons.
Interlinears.
Commentaries.
Scholarly databases on our phones.

And yet.

Most Christians cannot explain the difference between the Abrahamic and Mosaic covenants.
Most cannot articulate what the Day of Atonement foreshadowed.
Most have never read Hebrews slowly enough to feel the tension building toward chapter 7.

The problem is not access.

The problem is appetite.

And appetite must be trained.

What Dullness Costs You

The author of Hebrews is not harsh for sport.

He knows what spiritual laziness forfeits.

There is a direct line between 5:11 and chapter 7. He pushes forward and delivers one of the most extraordinary theological arguments in the New Testament—a sustained, text-driven, exegetically precise case for a priesthood that changes everything about access to God.

But here’s the reality:

The depth you receive from Hebrews 7 is directly proportional to the work you’ve done in Genesis 14 and Psalm 110.

If you’ve never wrestled with why a priest-king appears without genealogy in Genesis, you won’t feel the force of Hebrews’ argument.

If you’ve never sat with Psalm 110 and asked why David calls someone “my Lord,” you won’t grasp why the author stakes everything on it.

If you’ve never traced the limitations of the Levitical system, you won’t understand why its replacement is not merely theological—it’s existential.

Dullness doesn’t cost you salvation.

It costs you depth.

You hear the melody but miss the harmony.
You read the words but never feel the structure beneath them.

And Scripture was written with structure.

The author of Hebrews knew this. That’s why he rebuked them.

Not out of contempt.

Out of urgency.

The Invitation Inside the Rebuke

Here’s what most readers miss.

Hebrews 5:11 is a rebuke—but it is also an invitation.

He does not say, “There is nothing to tell you.”

He says, “We have much to say.”

The revelation is there.
The solid food is prepared.
The argument is waiting.

The only question is whether the reader will grow.

“Solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to distinguish good from evil.” (Hebrews 5:14)

The word translated “practice” is ἕξιν (hexin)—habit, disciplined repetition, cultivated skill.

Maturity in Scripture is not passive.

It is trained.

It is practiced.

It is built through returning to the text again and again with the expectation that there is more—because there always is.

This is why Hidden Word exists.

Not to make Scripture complicated.
But to refuse to flatten it.

The treasures are there.
They have always been there.
But they are not handed to the passive reader.

They belong to those willing to move past milk and pick up a fork.

Hebrews eventually delivers the argument he almost withheld — a priesthood rooted in Genesis 14, sworn in Psalm 110, fulfilled in Christ.

Explore the Book

Most Christians were taught Bible stories.

Few were taught the Bible’s worldview.

Those are not the same thing.

You can memorize David and Goliath, Daniel in the lions’ den, and the parables of Jesus — and still miss the cosmic framework the biblical authors assumed every reader understood.

The problem is not that the Bible is unclear.

The problem is that we were handed a flattened version of it.

The Bible’s Supernatural Assumptions

The writers of Scripture operated within a spiritual reality that modern Western readers often ignore or reinterpret.

They assumed:

• A heavenly assembly.

• Spiritual beings assigned authority.

• Nations under divine governance.

• A cosmic rebellion.

• Territorial conflict that was both earthly and spiritual.

This was not fringe theology. It was the default worldview of the biblical authors.

Passages like Psalm 82, Deuteronomy 32, Job 1–2, and 1 Kings 22 describe a divine council — a heavenly courtroom where God presides among other spiritual beings. The Hebrew term elohim is used not only for the God of Israel but for members of this spiritual realm.

The biblical authors were not embarrassed by this worldview. They wrote as if it were obvious.

We, however, were rarely taught to see it.

What Happened at Babel

Deuteronomy 32 describes the division of the nations after Babel in terms most English readers never notice. According to the oldest manuscript traditions (including the Dead Sea Scrolls and Septuagint), the nations were apportioned “according to the sons of God,” while the Lord kept Israel as His own inheritance.

That statement reshapes the entire Old Testament.

Israel was not just another nation. It was God’s direct possession in a world already fractured along spiritual lines.

The conflicts of the Old Testament are not merely geopolitical. They are theological. They unfold within a world where earthly nations are entangled with spiritual authority.

Remove that framework, and the narrative flattens.

Keep it, and everything intensifies.

The Church Forgot How to Read This

Somewhere along the way, much of the church softened this worldview.

The divine council became metaphor.
Principalities and powers became abstractions.
Cosmic rebellion became poetic imagery.

But the New Testament writers did not treat these realities symbolically.

When Paul speaks of rulers, authorities, thrones, and dominions, he is not inventing categories. He is operating inside the same worldview his Hebrew Scriptures had already established.

The story of Scripture is not only about personal salvation.

It is about reclaiming the nations.

It is about restoring rightful rule.

It is about undoing a rebellion that began before Abraham was born.

Without the supernatural worldview of the Old Testament, the urgency of the New Testament diminishes. The language feels dramatic but undefined.

With that worldview restored, the text regains its weight.

Why You Were Never Taught This

Many churches prioritize clarity and accessibility. That is good.

But sometimes clarity comes at the cost of depth.

Rather than teaching the ancient Near Eastern context, the spiritual geography, and the layered use of Hebrew terminology, modern instruction often moves quickly to application.

We are taught what a passage means for our lives before we are taught what it meant in its own world.

The result is a Bible that feels moral but not cosmic.

Personal but not global.

Encouraging but not electrifying.

Recovering the Framework

When you recover the worldview of the biblical authors, familiar passages shift.

The prophets’ oracles against the nations take on spiritual dimension.
The Great Commission echoes Babel in reverse.
The language of inheritance, kingdom, and authority becomes precise rather than symbolic.

You begin to see that Scripture is telling a story far larger than individual inspiration.

It is telling the story of divine rule challenged and restored.

Of nations divided and reclaimed.

Of authority corrupted and reestablished.

This is not speculative theology. It is textual theology — drawn from the Hebrew Bible itself.

And once you see it, you cannot unsee it.

The Invitation

You were likely taught the Bible sincerely.

But you were probably not taught the worldview that holds it together.

Recovering that worldview does not make Scripture stranger.

It makes it coherent.

It reconnects Genesis to Revelation with the theological wiring intact.

The Bible is not a collection of disconnected spiritual lessons.

It is a unified narrative unfolding within a supernatural reality the authors assumed you would recognize.

The question is not whether that worldview exists in the text — it does.

The question is whether we are willing to read the text on its own terms.

That is not a flaw in the text. It is a feature of the text.

Modern readers are trained to expect immediate clarification. When a concept appears, we expect a definition. When a person enters the story, we expect background. When a tension arises, we expect resolution before the chapter ends.

Scripture often refuses those expectations.

And it does so deliberately.

Mystery Is Not Obscurity

There is a difference between obscurity and mystery.

Obscurity hides meaning because something is unclear, careless, or incomplete.

Mystery conceals meaning because something is layered, intentional, and waiting to unfold.

The Bible contains difficult passages. It contains ancient idioms and cultural assumptions that require study. But when Scripture withholds explanation inside the narrative itself, that silence is rarely accidental.

Some silences are signals.

Some brief appearances are threads.

Some unanswered questions are invitations.

The modern instinct is to close those gaps quickly. The biblical instinct is to let them breathe.

The Discipline of Canonical Reading

The Bible is not organized like a textbook. It is a unified narrative written across centuries by multiple authors who were not competing with one another but building upon one another.

What appears in seed form in one book may not reach full clarity until many books later.

A name appears without explanation.
A title is introduced without commentary.
A ritual is performed before its meaning is explained.

The first appearance is often not the final explanation.

Scripture assumes you will keep reading.

This is what we might call canonical patience — the willingness to hold an unresolved detail in tension until later revelation illuminates it. When something seems incomplete, the answer may not be missing. It may be postponed.

The text does not always define its categories immediately because it intends to deepen them over time.

Why the Bible Slows You Down

Mystery forces attention.

It resists skimming. It resists reduction. It resists the assumption that meaning is exhausted by a first reading.

When a figure appears without genealogy in a culture obsessed with lineage, that absence speaks.
When two symbolic elements show up together long before their theological fulfillment, that pairing signals something.
When roles that later become legally separated appear unified in an earlier narrative moment, that tension matters.

The biblical authors were not careless. They preserved what they preserved because it mattered.

Mystery trains the reader in attentiveness.

It cultivates humility. It demands that we read forward and backward, tracing patterns rather than isolating verses.

In that sense, mystery is not an obstacle to understanding. It is the means by which understanding matures.

Progressive Illumination

The Bible reveals its meaning progressively.

Earlier passages are not errors waiting to be corrected; they are foundations waiting to be built upon. Later revelation does not discard earlier material. It intensifies it.

What once appeared brief becomes weighty.
What once seemed incidental becomes central.
What once felt unresolved becomes luminous.

The coherence of Scripture is not always obvious at first glance. It emerges as threads are traced across time.

This is not confusion. It is design.

The Invitation

If Scripture sometimes feels difficult, the difficulty may not lie in the text’s weakness but in its depth.

The Bible rewards sustained reading.

It rewards memory.
It rewards comparison.
It rewards returning to earlier passages after encountering later ones.

Its mysteries are not meant to frustrate you. They are meant to form you.

The God who inspired Scripture did not write a careless book. He wrote a book that unfolds.

And unfolding takes time.

Mystery is not an accident in the Bible.

It is a teaching method.
