Hi everyone, and welcome back. I’m so glad you’re here.

I’m also so thrilled that news is finally out about my big interview with Dr. Jill Biden, and I just want to say thank you to every person who commented, messaged, and shared that episode of Second Life. After eight years of doing 50 shows annually, I never get nervous anymore, but this one felt different. Dr. Biden is an amazing educator, author, and former First Lady, and sitting down with her to talk about her career was nothing short of inspiring. I encourage you to watch the episode if you have a chance (it’s on Spotify).

We covered a tremendous amount of ground, including but not limited to: Her first marriage and how that solidified her desire for financial independence, thinking President Biden was a square for how he dressed on their first date, why she has two masters degrees and a doctorate, the fact that she’s the first First Lady to hold a job outside the White House, and more. We touched on everything from Hunter Biden to Mary Oliver, and I just loved Dr. Biden’s staunchly feminist attitude. It was truly a pleasure and an honor to speak with her.

It was also fundamentally surreal to have her walk into the office, with her team and Secret Service detail, in chic fuchsia Dior slingbacks. I don’t think the scope of what was happening really hit me until the interview was over and I walked her to the front door. Outside, there were police officers guarding her motorcade, and our street was essentially at a standstill. The gravitas suddenly hit me, and I was surprised by the wave of emotion. To think this little project that I started in 2018 with my former assistant-turned-producer (now chef!), of which there are now over 400 episodes, was chosen to be an appropriate and relevant place for Dr. Biden to talk about her book and career? Mindblowing, to put it mildly.

5 New Beauty Essentials

Sulwhasoo UV Wise On-The-Go Sun Cushion ($45)

Full disclosure: I have no idea how this product ended up in my hands, but I recently decided to try it on a whim and friends, I’m stunned by how good it is. It’s an SPF 50 sunblock that feels like skincare and comes in a portable compact that’s actually a delight to put on, and can be applied before or after makeup. It’s legit incredible. I’ve never felt a formula like this in my life; it absorbs into you skin in seconds. Plus you can throw it in your bag and reapply during the day over your tinted moisturizer or foundation and it doesn’t mess up your makeup! Literally the most inventive and high performing sunblock product I’ve tried in years. I cannot stress enough how insanely rad it is. Run, don’t walk.

Dieux Firm Revival HydroRetinal Firming Serum for Fine Lines and Wrinkles ($42)

I’ve been writing about Dieux since the brand launched, and am Team Eye Serum for life, so it’s probably no surprise I wanted to try the brand’s new firming serum. Prior to this, I wasn’t actually usomg any retinoids, which is I think surprising given the fact that the science shows it’s excellent, particularly for a woman of my age and skin concerns. I don’t know what to tell you other than it’s just fallen out of my routine—until now.

As someone who has gone too hard on my skin in the past, I was happy to see that this product got the National Eczema Association seal of acceptance, which means it’s free of known irritants and allergens. (No, I don’t have eczema, but I always appreciate products that are formulated for it.) This serum is one step down from prescription retinoic acid (think: Tretinoin), but more potent than most over-the-counter products. It’s an at-night only formula, that I put on after washing my face and before moisturizer, and you have to wear sunscreen if you’re using a retinoid.

Right now I’ve been working my way up to daily usage, and am using it three times a week. Also the product education and science communication that Dieux does on the brand’s website is excellent, if you’re looking for more details.

Rhode Highlight Milk Multipurpose Luminizer ($28) in Color 01 / Pearly Pink

Rhode’s glazing milk is one of my most important skincare products, so when I saw the brand had created a luminizing version, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. Like most things Rhode, it doesn’t miss. I personally use the lightest shade, and I love that it gives you some easy glow without looking juvenile or like a Twilight vampire. It’s available in three other colors and yes, you can wear it on your body, too, if that’s your vibe. Honestly it’s excellent.

Shark Beauty Shark FlexStyle IonCurl Air Styler & Curler ($350)

A couple of years ago, I was staying with a friend and laughed at her little itty bitty Shark hairdryer, until I tried it and was knocked over by how powerful it was. So I will admit that I was quite curious when I first saw Shark’s dryer-turned-curler all over my social media feeds. What can I say? I was influenced, and I’m quite happy about it. That said, for me, there’s a smidge of a learning curve, but honestly it wasn’t that big of a deal and truthfully that probably says more about my skill set than the tool.

Things that I know now: Before you air curl, make sure your roots are dry and your hair is only a little damp. Or just dry your hair and then spritz your ends with water before using it, which works particularly well for second-day hair. Secondly, I find my hair stays put longer if I put it in pin curls to cool/set after, which I do instead of velcro rollers (because I no longer have velcro rollers, but obvi that would work too). Also, maybe this is wrong, but I only use one of the wands (the kit comes with one for the right side and one for the left) because I prefer to hold it horizontally rather than vertically, which I find gives me more root volume and a less beachy curl. (Also: I have lilac, but it also comes in strawberry matcha and blue.)

Merit Clean Volume Volumizing Tubal Mascara ($28)

I know, I know, I wrote about this recently, but y’all it’s so good, it deserves to go in this roundup again. (Roz’s mousse, is also worth another shout.) Particularly the brown version, which I never do because normally I want my mascara to be as black as my heart. But the brown is damn good, and really lovely in summer. The formula, however, is excellent year round. I have truly been putting it through the ringer between filming episodes of the pod, sweaty weight-lifting sessions, pool time, and more, and it’s legit smudgeproof. The most smudgeproof of any tubing formula I’ve ever used. Friends, I haven’t been this serious about a mascara in years. So there.

FWIW: I love Doen, but it sells out quickly and rarely goes on sale, which is why I was elated to see it’s part of a Saks gift card promotion, which isn’t technically a sale, but close enough because you can earn a gift card by shopping through Tuesday. My super soft plaid dress is part of it, as is this super chic front-tie dress (I have it in brown and am buying this one too because it’s so chic and comfy) and my go-to puff sleeve dress.

In other news, I’m not sure why, but all I want to wear are oversized giant aviators, but without paying Chloe or Loewe prices, so I just ordered myself a pair of Warby Bix Sunglasses ($95), and will let you know how that goes. (Side note, I got the standard lenses, but you can put a custom color in and they have lots of options, which is cool.)

Also totally unrelated, but now that I’m seeing a trainer, I’ve decided to upgrade my decade-old bleach splattered leggings and just bought two pairs of Colorful Koala No Front Seam Working Leggings ($29), and I’m in love. TTS.

Last, but not least, the search for an Emmys dress continues! I went and tried on a dream Oscar de la Renta peridot dress this week, and loved the dramatic cape effect that you can play up or down. As per usual, I do not have the proper undergarments nor shoes, and yes it needs a steam, but I just can’t I love this color so much. I also die for this gray number, but the proportions are sadly not made for my hips. Alas!

You know that scene in Pretty Woman when Julia Roberts’s character has money and wants to buy nice clothes, but the bitchy saleswoman won’t help her? That’s how I feel trying to buy a dress for the Emmys (which I am attending because my brilliant husband was nominated for his music supervision work on Nobody Wants This). I’m not exactly brandishing wads of cash at anyone, but I feel similarly stymied by the process of trying to find a dress for the occasion, and that’s with an ungodly amount of privilege on my side, both monetarily and the fact that I’m a straight size. I have a lot of options, theoretically, and yet..I’m stumped.

The only grace I will give myself is that it’s not the easiest time of year to shop for an evening dress, as the spring and summer gowns are mostly picked over and fall hasn’t really made it into stores yet. Plus, I’m a woman in her mid-40s with two kids, a body that fluctuates, and all the normal insecurities that come with having grown up in the ‘90s and worked in fashion my whole life.

And I’m also willing to admit that I’m not the easiest of customers. As someone who has been lucky enough to go to a number of these awards shows—both with my husband, when he was nominated for his music supervision work on Girls, and I had the extreme privilege of attending with a dear friend for work many moons ago—I also have practical concerns, like never wearing a dress with a train ever again.

(I wore a vintage Carolina Herrera gown with a slight train, purchased from The Way We Wore and divine in all other ways, to the Golden Globes one year. Oh, what an absolute nightmare. Everyone steps on said train constantly, and also let’s be real: I am always there as a guest. It’s not my night. I don’t need something dramatic.)

Anyway, if you see anything that you think would be an interesting choice, send it my way! (And to give you a vibe, I have this side-drape dress coming (happy to say Saks has a 25% off sale going on right now that I’m going to take advantage of, and maybe I aslo bought a black pair of these surprisingly comfortable Manolo slingbacks), I bought this Maticevski stunner, but I think the slit is too high to comfortable navigate, alas, and this Oscar de la Renta dress is a dream, but doesn’t seem to exist in my size.)

Do you remember when I said I was incredibly nervous about an upcoming episode of the podcast? That episode goes live on Monday, and I can’t wait to discuss it. In the meantime, I had an absolute blast sitting down with Rudy Mance, the costume designer responsible for the looks in Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette, and I think it’s worth a listen and watch. The level of research, care, and meticulous detail in his work truly floored me, and the backstory on the show is absolutely wild.

SAVE: Left on Friday (rare) Sale

YCOHO Alert! If you’ve been here a minute, you’ll know that I there is exactly one swimwear brand that I consistently ride for, and that’s Left on Friday. I’m a longtime lover of the brand’s supportive, minimal, sleek Sunday Top ($77 on sale now) and the comfortable, lightly cheeky Hi Tide Bottoms ($77 on sale now), both of which I wear in black in a medium, as well as the skimpier Sandy Top ($77 on sale now), which is giving French insouciance. Anyway, it’s the only time of the year the brand goes on sale, and said sale is over on Monday, so I’d stock up if I were you.

BUY: Parker Thatch Micro Jane Bag ($498) in Leopard

As someone who owns over ten pairs of animal-print shoes, I often shy away from buying bags in leopard or cheetah, because they historically haven’t held up. (The constant pressure against your body means they wear out weirdly, at least in my experience.) But I love leopard and am always looking for a new way to incorporate it, and am thrilled with this little bucket bag. It’s truly just the perfect mini bag that still has enough room for a wallet, keys, sunglasses, and more, but it’s just so simple and chic. I also love that you can swap out the strap if you want to personalize it or turn it into a crossbody. And If you’d like to know more about the brand, I interviewed the founder, Irene Chen, earlier this year for Second Life. She’s rad.

TRY: Merit Clean Volume Volumizing Tubing Mascara ($28)

Nine times out of ten, I will tell you that my favorite mascara is Dior’s DiorShow Iconic Overcurl Mascara ($35), which I maintain is one of the best products on the market. That said, I’ve been wearing Merit’s volumizing tubing mascara a lot lately, and I have to say it’s also pretty phenomenal. (Full disclosure: The brand was founded by my former business partner, and incubated at our old company, but I hope that you know I only recommend things I actually really like and use.) First of all, I love that it’s tubing formula, which truly means it doesn’t transfer—even when I’m sweating my face off in the middle of weight training or exercising in what feels like 89% humidity—and it comes off very easily in the shower with regular face wash and a little pressure. I adore the wand which is small and really lets you get into every nook and cranny of your lashes. It also lives up to all the volumizing claims, and truly gives you a luscious lash, which is the only thing I really care about. It’s honestly amazing, and I’m impressed. And while you’re shopping, might as well pick up the brand’s highlighting balm (I use the shade Cava), which is the only highlighting product I’ve used in years.

WATCH: Sterling Point

As someone who has followed young Hollywood for the last twenty years, I feel like we are having another major moment, the likes of which we haven’t seen since the late aughts. Is it weird that I love all the teen dramas and romantic comedies right now? I really don’t care because shows like Off Campus and now Sterling Point are offering some much needed escapism in the world today, and I’m thrilled.

Before we get into today’s story, I just wanted to say thank you for the remarkable kindness you all show me on a regular basis. The comments and messages I received after last week’s newsletter were so meaningful, and I appreciate that folks feel comfortable sharing here. Getting older is a wild privilege, and while I feel lucky to have the space to navigating my identity as both my kids and parents age, it can sometimes feel overwhelming, and I appreciate being able to speak about it here.

Mildly related: In addition to appreciating the online community of this newsletter, I also sometimes get to meet a few of you in the wild, and I love it. Alas, I’ve Stolen My Husband’s Style.

You know how sometimes you have a realization that hits you like a thunderbolt? Something clicks that’s so obvious, you don’t know how you didn’t see it before? And once you see it, you can’t go back to before times? Well that’s how I felt the other day, when I realized that after nearly 10 years of marriage, I might have slowly stolen my husband’s personal style.

How embarrassing! I’ve worked in fashion for over twenty years; how did I become a style copy cat? And of a straight man, no less? It’s so wrong, but here’s the thing: It’s also so right, which might be both the best and worst part of the whole thing.

See, my husband has great taste. (I mean, obviously; look at who he married.) And I have a whole theory that having similar or at least highly compatible taste is actually more important in a relationship than anyone ever discusses. But that’s another conversation for another newsletter. Back to his taste: I think he’s better at dressing himself than 95% of the other straight men I know, without being too style-y, which I also wouldn’t like. And it’s taste that has evolved over the twelve years we’ve been together, from indie rock hipster when we were going to dive bars and shows all the time to the proper chic man he is today.

So if I’m going to steal someone’s style, at least his is good? That’s what I’m telling myself. But jokes aside, I do feel like there’s something remarkably wonderful about being able to borrow things from his closet and take cues from his wardrobe choices. And even better, I think there are things I’ve learned from him that I think are somewhat universal jumping off points. And am I the only one who has done this? 1. A vintage t-shirt will forever be that girl.

There is something about a worn-in vintage graphic t-shirt that will always be cool, no matter the trend cycle. And happily, my husband doesn’t seem to mind that I have commandeered some of his best pieces. I wear them tucked into my go-to black leather skirts, or cinched at the waist with a hair tie, and then tucked into the small of my back.

2. A great chore jacket is universally cool.

As some of you might know, I wear an Alex Mill blue Painter Jacket ($225) on a regular basis and believe it is the best option for travel in the world. That jacket is 100% inspired by my husband’s Garment Dyed Chore Jacket in Canvas ($225) in French Navy. And that I wear his as much as my own, and vice versa. My jacket is an oversized medium, which he will steal for walking the dog, and I have borrowed his more times than I can count. Either way, the jacket is rad and I will keep yammering about it as long as the color is in stock.

3. Loafers make most everything look better.

While I might have been the first in our house to wear Jamie Haller loafers, I will admit that my husband started wearing this shoe style before I did. Embarrassing, but he was right. And even more embarrassing, but also lovely: He’s the one who bought me my first pair! And eventually I bought him his own pair of Jamie Haller loafers, which he wears and loves as much as I do. My point is simple: Loafers are still cool and everyone should have a pair they love.

4. Clip-on sunglasses are worth trying.

You know how I talked about the Jimmy Fairly sunglasses that are giving me joy last week? Well I might have gotten that idea from my husband, who wears a fancier pair from Moscot. He has the brand’s Lemtosh glasses with the Cliptosh, an actual working clip-on sunglass on top of his prescription distance glasses. (For folks who need glasses for distance, it’s kind of perfect because then you don’t need separate prescription sunglasses.) Also, did you know Warby Parker makes a range of affordable clip-on sunglasses? Personally I like their Winston Frames ($95) in Black Oak Tortoise with the Winston Medium Clip On ($95), but they have a surprising amount of options that are cute and worth exploring.

5. Custom pendants on a ball chain necklace are worth the investment.

On our first anniversary, my husband gave me a 1916 Mercury dime from the San Francisco mint, which he had turned into a pendant and paired with a thin ball chain. He has a matching one, from the Philadelphia mint. (Why this necklace? We were married in 2016, so the date is significant, and the San Francisco mint is the closest one to where I grew up, while the Philly one is closest to his childhood home.) I also love it because the chain is a fancy version of my military father’s dog tags, which were always popping up in random drawers in our house. I love that we have matching custom necklaces, and that he found something that’s cool enough for both of us.

And if you were wondering: Why aren’t there pictures of said husband? I understand! Here’s the thing: I am conscious of the fact that he is not a public person, and while he’s kind enough to let me write about him, I am also try to be respectful of his privacy. But trust me: He’s cool. I mean, this is his t-shirt; who could resist?

Hi everyone, and welcome back! I’m so glad that you’re here. Earlier this week, I was talking to a dear friend and I said, I feel like I’m on the verge of a mid-life crisis, but not the trad male version that’s all sports cars and younger women (I respect both, but desire neither), but in the death is out there, so let’s get strong and hot and healthy way. So I found myself booking a dozen sessions with a trainer for the first time in 25 years, to try and figure out on how to do this the right way, on top of the therapy that I’ve been detailing here, to make sure my brain and emotions are also looked after.

Not to get too dark, but I think the impetus comes from a combination of sadness and surfacing from the depths of having small children. The sadness part is because I’m at an age when many of my friends’ parents are passing away, and it is making me extremely aware that we have one wild and precious life. The surfacing is pretty self-explanatory, but has also surprised me. The common trope I’ve heard is that it takes a year to get to baseline after a baby, which I think is insane, especially if you spent that first year breastfeeding, as I did with both.

So yeah, I reject that timeline.

My kids are 22 months apart, so I truthfully didn’t start feeling like I was even close to back to normal—or a new normal, which is more accurate—until my youngest was three. But now that they are almost seven and nine, I am realizing that I’m just now starting to feel like myself again. And that’s embarrassing to write, to admit that I was so fundamentally upended by having children, but it’s the truth.

But now, I feel like there’s a smidge more breathing room, and parenting doesn’t feel nearly as hard and complex as it did even two years ago. And in that space, I can consider things I hadn’t considered before. Like building in time for my own health. Like taking small holidays without my kids, which I’m just learning how to do and is still uncomfortable but important.

Or maybe I’m just in a state of euphoria because after FY27 budget presentation week—high-key stressful—I don’t have a single 6 a.m. meeting on my calendar for at least a fortnight. And honestly, maybe that’s enough?

(Also, can I just say I found my first workout with my trainer to be humbling, to put it mildly? My triceps have been sore for two days. But maybe, just maybe, we are going to get my comatose glutes to come online!)

Jimmy Fairly The Carl Sunglasses ($148)

Not sure if you feel similarly, but the start of August is a weird time to shop. Truthfully, I bought most of my summer staples in March, for spring break, and have worn everything into the ground ever since. But it’s also way too hot in southern California to mess around with fall clothes, which means I’m taking my shoppies out on two things: Sunglasses and jewelry. As for the former, I’m now on my third pair of Jimmy Fairly sunglasses in as many years, and I have to say that I’m always super impressed with their construction. (My collection started with The Elma JF Colors, then added the green The Palma, and both are still in heavy rotation.)

My new obsession are a medium-to-large format aviator with a retro hinge covering, and they are just the coolest. They remind me of a pair I fell in love with from legendary Benjamin Eyewear in the late aughts, but at a much more accessible price point, and of course, have a hint of Dwayne Wayne to them, too.

I cannot stress how much I love this brand, and how great the quality is for the price. I think they’re truly exceptional, and wish more Americans knew about them. (Yes, I know you guys know about them; I mean other folks, of course.)

Roz Hair Milk Styling Texture Defining Hair Mousse ($39)

I know I am possibly the world’s biggest fan of Roz Hair, and so it should come as no surprise that I’m thrilled about the brand’s phenomenal new mousse. I will be honest: I haven’t used a mousse in a thousand years? Maybe not ever, really? So I admittedly don’t have a ton of experience to compare it to, but I think that’s partially the point. I’ve bought a bunch of mousses over the years, but never used them more than once or twice because they were sticky and left my hair feeling crunchy and yuck.

Not this one. Founder and stylist Mara Rozak has absolutely cracked the code on volume and definition in this phenomenal product. For the Very Important Interview I recorded on Friday, I first put a pump of Roz’s milk hair serum in my damp hair, combed it through, and then raked three pumps of the hair mousse from roots to ends before drying and curling my hair. Friends, it gave me so much fun body, I was shocked. Like I was wearing fake hair levels of body, to be honest. I haven’t experimented as much with using it for air dried curls, but that’s next on my to-do list! Until then, I can tell you with absolute certainty that this is a genius product. Buy it.

Kitsch Satin-Lined Flexi Shower Cap ($24)

When I first started this newsletter, one of my earlier stories was about shower caps, and the quest to find a nice one. And for many years, I had one that was fine, but not major, until the elastic started to sag terribly and I knew it was time. After getting a number of recommendations, I decided to try Kitsch, and I’m so glad I did! I’m obsessed with this satin-lined flexible cap, that has an adjustable wire closure, so you can truly customize it for your own head and hair! It’s truly remarkable and excellent, and I cannot recommend it strongly enough. I also like the brand itself, which is the largest self-funded, female-owned beauty company in the world. Isn’t that awesome?

Zoe Chicco 14k Gold & Malachite Rondelle Bead Necklace with 3 Prong Diamonds ($1595)

As I mentioned in the beginning, I’ve been a bit of a magpie over the last couple of years, and have spent more on jewelry and less on bags and clothes than at any other point in my life. And I think you all have noticed, as I get DMs on a very regular basis about my jewelry, and my necklaces in particular. One of those newer additions is this incredible green number, which was designed by local LA legend, Zoe Chicco. (I also have an open-link necklace of hers that I wear often and love always.) I love that it feels like an extremely fancy candy necklace, and malachite has some amazing meanings, as it’s known as the stone of transformation, and for protecting against negative energy, which sounds dandy to me.

To say she was an exquisite bride is the understatement of the year, in no small part because she was styled by the peerless Shiona Turini, a combination that embodied excellence on every level. While I’m not going to give you much in the way of wedding details—that’s for Nikki to share—I will say I did a pretty smart job of packing for this trip, and truly believe the secret to work travel (maybe life?) is finding dresses that don’t wrinkle. More on that, below.

Before we discuss the highs and lows of my packing, I just wanted to make the case for a couple of things I think are worth your time.

1. Jessica Knoll’s new book, Helpless ($25)

As a longtime fan of all things Jessica Knoll—I had the great pleasure of interviewing her for Second Life back in 2022 and think the episode is well worth your time—picking up her newest book was a no brainer. (Full disclosure: Jessica sent me an advance copy with a note that simply said, “Buckle up.” But I liked the book so much I bought two copies so I could give it to a couple of friends, FWIW.) When I tell you I inhaled this book in a single day, I’m not joking. About halfway through I had to put it down and take Snacks for a walk, just so that it would be over too quickly.

All the critics are calling it a “sexy thriller” and what happens when “Gone Girl meets 50 Shades” and I’m here to say those comments are pretty accurate, but don’t fully capture Jessica’s brillance. The story is twisty and suspenseful without being horrifying or gory, and definitely darkly horny. And yes, that felt a little awkward to write because I know many of the readers of this newsletter in my professional life, but sometimes you have to just say the true thing. Anyway! Go buy this book; it’s the best thing Jessica has written, and that’s saying something as she is a New York Times bestselling author of a lot of damn fine books.

2. Lucky (streaming now on Apple TV)

Loosely based on the bestselling New York Times and Reese’s Book Club Pick novel by author Marissa Stapley, co-written, produced, and created by Jonathan Tropper and (my friend!!) Cassie Pappas, and starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Drew Starkey, Annette Benning, and my favorite Timothy Olyphant, I am deeply thrilled by this show. It’s higher stakes than my usual go-to recommendations, but it’s a truly thrilling heist-gone-wrong, con-on-the-run show that I think is worth a mini binge. Three episodes are out now, with a new one coming this week!

72 Hours In New York / 8 Work Meetings + 1 Rehearsal Dinner + 1 Wedding

For this quick trip to New York, I had to figure out a way to cram two formal dresses and ensuing accessories into my suitcase, plus a travel outfit for the return flight home, something for a work dinner, and looks for two days of in-person client meetings. This isn’t so hard, but the social events add a layer of additional items, as they a) simply require more room than a standard outfit and b) need different shoes and bags than I’d normally pack. Plus New York weather is often a mystery to me, and was forecast to be hot, but inside spaces are always so damn cold (complimentary). As always, I don’t like to buy new clothes for work trips, because the last thing anyone needs in a pitch meeting is feeling fidgety in one’s clothes. Nope.

Travel Days: I wore basically the same thing for both travel days, and totally forgot to take a photo of it. Do you remember how I’ve said like a zillion times that I own two pairs of the Banana Republic Barrel Leg Pull On Pants ($84.99 on sale now)? Well that came in handy, because I wore one pair to New York, and the other on the way home. Styled both with gray t-shirts (The Great’s boxy crew there and a vintage one I stole from my husband on the way back), leopard Jamie Haller loafers, and my now beloved and very tested Alex Mill Painter Jacket ($250) in the most perfect blue known to humanity. (I sized up to a medium for the jacket, which is boxy and slouchy that way.) This jacket has four pockets, making it ideal for travel, and it’s machine washable and super soft.

Work Dinner and Meetings

After landing on Wednesday evening, I walked to a really fun dinner at The Corner Store, where I ran into a slew of delightful former colleagues and friends whilst there. FWIW, The Corner Store makes a mean French dip sandwich, which I strongly recommend. For this dinner, it was so hot out and I was walking, so I wore a black linen Reformation Birdie Dress ($298), which runs a little va-va-va-voom when you sit down, an older pair of Jamie Haller Double Buckle Sandals ($595), and my older suede Chloe Small Bracelet Bag ($2950), which is similar to this one and has been a real winner in my book. Overall this look is easy and worked, so I’m glad I packed it.

Thursday: The next day I had back-to-back in-person meetings with clients, and not knowing if the heat was going to be as bad as it sounded. Spoiler alert: 80 degrees in New York is not the same as in LA. It’s so much better and lighter. I love a midi length, sleeved, print dress for work, especially in a non-wrinkley fabric, and so this Rixo Meg Leopard Polka Dot Dress ($415) was ideal. I didn’t need a sweater, the print combo is so fun, and it works for my work, so that’s a 10/10. Wore it with my “walking slingbacks,” which are Amina Muaddi Holli Slingbacks ($760), which are a treat, and my Jamie Haller tote, which is sadly sold out. Side note, I really love her new The Ledger Bag ($1395) in Olive, and have a feeling it’s going to be my next splurge.

That night, we had the first event for Nikki Ogunnaike’s wedding, which was a cocktail party in Brooklyn. I wore an older Rebecca Vallance strapless dress that has a corseted bodice and a full skirt, with the same Chloe bag and an old pair of black suede Paul Andrew peep-toe mules, that I wish were part of the permanent collection. (Staud makes a similar style at a better price, iif you’re interested.) I made an amateur mistake and didn’t ask about the party’s ground covering, and I wish I had! If I’d known, I’d have worn the Amina Muaddi’s instead, because they’re much easier for navigating grass. Learn from my mistake! Also, the Rebecca Vallance dress no longer is on the market, but I also have the Narcissa Dress ($815) and love it, which is the same material, though a different cut.

Friday: The final stretch! I had more in-person meetings on Friday, and I’m pleased to say my formula worked again: Print dress with sleeves and a midi length, in a non-wrinkle-forward fabric. On this day, I wore a very old Rodarte dress because it’s perfect for any weather and occasion, doesn’t require steaming, and you can change it up with accessories. I added my Khaite studded belt to play off the sweetness of the floral print, and stuck with my previous day’s accessories.

And that night, I got all dressed up because my husband (who flew in late Thursday night and back to LA with me early Saturday morning, and is a real hero) and I had Nikki’s wedding in Brooklyn that night. I won’t spoil the details of her amazing wedding, but trust me when I say it was magical. (Also, I will say this: That was one of the most stylish, delightful, love-filled weddings I have ever been to in my life. It was an honor to witness and be in the company of such a brilliant couple, who have the most phenomenal friends.)

After much debate, I ended up in a dark teal and lilac one-shoulder dress, specifically Roksanda’s Maite Cocktail Dress ($1720), which is lightly outside my style zone in terms of silhouette. As you might have picked up by now, I feel most comfortable in a strapless evening gown, and have never done something with a single shoulder, let alone a cape accent, but my friend Katie and my husband both approved, which gave me the push I needed. I first started buying Roksanda after I went to one of the brand’s shows during London Fashion Week, and I think her stuff is really well done. The fit is always for real, actual women, the colors are painterly, and the fabrics are great. It’s not expensive, but I have Roksanda pieces for well over a decade that I wear often a still look brand new.

Last thing on packing: I recently purchased this Open Story 7-Piece Packing Cube Set ($35) and honestly, it’s a real winner. They have a compression aspect to them, so they really allow you to maximize your suitcase space!

Flying: And before I go, a quick update on my fear of flying progression. I’ve now had roughly four sessions with my therapist, who specializes in phobias of all kinds, and I am really impressed with how much better my anxiety is already. As I mentioned last week, before flying to New Hampshire with the kids, I was extremely uncomfortable that whole week, and the flight itself wasn’t ideal. However, I was able to enjoy myself whilst there, which was new for me, as my anticipatory anxiety has made it impossible to enjoy a trip, knowing that a return flight awaits me at the end.

Traveling to New York this time was even better, which I assume is because a) the flights were less turbulent and b) I wasn’t flying with my kids, so it fundamentally felt easier, as I didn’t have to mask my concerns. Also the simple act of examining my fear feels like it’s slowly deflating it, and starting to unpack my control issues!

I’m also using the Headspace app and listening to their fear of flying episode for 10 minutes before taking off and then during take off, which is nice and soothing. Additionally, I have some backup lorazepam in my bag, which I used extremely conservatively when traveling to New Hampshire, and not at all on this trip to New York. I think knowing that I have something if my panic starts to spiral really helps me feel equipped, psychologically, even if I’m barely/not using it. I guess this is a longwinded way of saying: I’m glad I’m geting help, and I hope anyone else going through this gets help too. It’s amazing, truly.

Hi everyone! And welcome back! So much has transpired since our last chat, and I’m really looking forward to catching up. First things first, some very good news: My amazing husband was nominated for an Emmy! Jonathan, along with his incredible colleagues, was nominated for the second time in his career, this time for his work on Nobody Wants This, which we all know also happens to be my favorite show. I think his music supervision was, in fact, outstanding, and I’m so incredibly proud of him, and everyone who works on this phenomenal show. What an absolute delight, and how joyous it is to see someone who works so tremendously hard actually get some well-deserved accolades? Very damn good!

Also, selfishly, I’m excited we get to get dressed up and go to the event together. The last time we went, I was six months pregnant with Clark, and my friends Joey Maalouf and Scott Cunha make me feel like an incredible fertility goddess with the most stunning makeup and nineteen pounds of hair. Longtime readers know that I don’t do pregnancy online—prefer to hard launch babies after they arrive—and that was a hard event to keep under wraps, so I’m excited to get another chance to support my husband without that photographic constraint. Which, yeah, I know it’s not the point of the party at all, but still! What am I going to wear? (Does it matter since it’s not my night? No way, but I’m still excited.) No clue, but stay tuned for a discussion here!

Also, I’m writing this story after a 12-hour journey home from New Hampshire, where we spent a week on various lakes, ate egregiously oversized ice creams from Liliuokalanis, played some version of baseball in our giant backyard, picked wild blackberries, went boulder caving in the deep woods, and generally enjoyed the heck out of our time with Jonathan’s mom and sister. I’ve only been to the Lakes Region of New Hampshire a handful of times, but friends, it’s truly a special place with some of the most kind and charming folks you can imagine. We rented a restored 1840s farmhouse on three acres this time, and it was truly special and great for kids, as are so many properties in this area. If you want details, let me know.

Before we hop into the Nordstrom Sale (!!!), a quick note about a few things that really helped me out this trip.

1. J.Crew Tiered Shirt Dress in Cotton Voile ($178)

I know you’re going to hear a lot about this dress, in fact, you’ve already seen it all over your feed, primarily in white. But here me out: I think the chicer choice is black. And if you’re feeling a little rebellious, join me in how I have been wearing it—sans slip. That’s right; it’s heavy enough that you’re not really showing off your bits and bobs, and I think there’s something really cool about the juxtaposition of the preppy shirtdress silhouette and the slight sheerness. It’s a little fuck you, in a nice way. I have been wearing mine with flat sandals—these slides from Toteme are ideal and weirdly hard to find such a simple silhouette—and my go-to evil cat-eye sunglasses from Jimmy Choo, which are so rad and attitudinal. (And FWIW I have the dress in a 6 and it’s TTS, but short!)

2. Banana Republic Soho Linen Shorts ($69.99 on sale) and Barrel-Leg Linen Pull-On Pants ($84.99 on sale)

Look, I know I’ve been banging on about these two piece of clothing since spring break, but they’re selling out and on sale, and if you haven’t explored, please do. I cannot say enough good stuff about the shorts; they fit like a relaxed trouser but have the generous leg that makes them look like a skirt. If you’ve ever been betrayed by a too-tight short leg, this is the redemption you deserve. As for the pants, I own two pairs, wore them to New Hampshire and back, washed them and wore them twice on the trip, what more can you ask for? TTS, both. And look how cute my shorts look with my very handy dandy oversized The Great The Big Bandana ($95) which I wear as a scarf on the plane, a wrap in the evening, and just hide behind in general.

3. Doen Brielle Dress ($328)

If you are looking for what is unquestionably the softest dress known to mankind, your quest ends here. This dress is divine: not sheer at all, incredibly soft, and whilst I hate the word, it’s extremely flattering. I wore it in New Hampshire and will keep it in heavy rotation all through the rest of summer and well into fall. It’s that good. Mine is a medium, which is TTS for me in Doen.

4. Therapy

As I’ve mentioned here, I’ve been having some significant issues with flying over the past year, and my emotions have really been getting the best of me, so much so that my anxiety doesn’t end with me getting off the plane. No; I’m worrying about my flight for the week before it happens, then mulling it over in an unhealthy and uncomfortable way the entire time I’m at my destination, and then on the verge of a panic attack on my way back. It’s early days in my treatment process, but I was referred to a phobia specialist (interesting to me, the fear of flying is a phobia and is often served best by someone who focuses on it), and we’ve only had three sessions, but I think I’m getting the hang of it. While I was deeply, deeply uncomfortable in the week leading up to my trip, I had a great session right before I left, was okay on the plane, and best of all, did not have overwhelming anticipatory anxiety for the week I was in New Hampshire, and that felt like a crazy gift. I am still at the beginning of my journey, but I am feeling markedly better already.

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

So here’s the thing about the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale that makes is so powerful and different from every other sale: Everything is new season, and will go back to the regular price after the Anni Sale is over. So this is basically your shot to decide who you are going to be for fall, today, and then make those key purchases for a limited time at a lower rate. Will these items go on sale many months from now? Sure, maybe? But will they have your size then? Will they have the color you want? You can take your chances, or you can buy things now at a great rate and just have your wardrobe locked in. It’s like gambling for practical people who don’t want to lose (ahem, me!). Oh, also inventory is limited, so you have to be decisive, okay?

So what would I concentrate on shopping? Boots, basics, and the best outerwear I can find and afford.

Starting with shoes: Stuart Weitzman Marais Leather Knee High Boots ($529 on sale; $795 after) will look chic for twenty years to come. Paige makes excellent suede pieces and I recommend the brand’s Lillian Pointed Toe Knee High Boots ($364 on sale; $548 after) in chocolate brown suede for all your fall needs. Frye’s Campus Knee High Riding Boots ($319 on sale; $478 after) are great too, as are Tory Burch’s Chelsea Boots ($279 on sale: $475 after). I also recommend checking out Favorite Daughter’s shoes, many of which are a part of the Anniversary Sale, and are quite chic (boots, flats, you name it).

Moving on to basics: ‘Tis the season to refresh your denim at better-than-normal prices. For me that means looking at black denim, specifically Levi’s Ribcage High Waisted Straight Leg Jeans ($72 on sale; normally $110) and Paige’s super comfy Stevie High Waist Straight Leg Jeans ($172 on sale; normally $259), which are going to take you from work to the weekend, from daytime errands to (early bird) dinner dates and everything in between. Also, if your double breasted wool blend coat got mistakenly lost this winter and you need a new one, might I point you to Vince’s Double Breasted Coat ($667 on sale; normally $998) which comes in black or charcoal and is ideal.

Hi everyone, and welcome back. As always, I’m so glad you’re here. Before we hop into today’s story, a shoutout to Ojai. Last weekend, my husband and I went there on a quick no-kids trip with some friends, which was the first time we’ve gone anywhere without them in nearly four years. For anyone contemplating a trip to the area, the Ojai Valley Inn is of course a lovely and expertly run option, with wonderful sprawling grounds and an excellent spa. One day, I walked into town and checked out El Roblar, which is a semi-new option from the folks who created The Bowery Hotel in New York (my favorite place), and it’s absolutely charming. Full disclosure: I strolled the grounds and met the two giant tortoises, but didn’t stay there, nor see the rooms. If you have thoughts on the rooms, please let me know! Overall vibes are impeccable though. We also had dinner at Rory’s Place one night, which was also charming and excellent.

Also worth a moment of your time: A new episode of the Who What Wear podcast, featuring the incredible styling team Wayman and Micah! These two gentlemen are beloved in the industry for their taste and top-notch personalities, and I was thrilled to have them back on the pod to talk about red carpet looks from the likes of Chase Infiniti and Colman Domingo, as well as the process of how custom gowns work, from sketch to reality. And yes, I’m wearing the Rixo dress I keep telling you I love, which I also took to Ojai. Truly she’s great.

15 Things I’m Packing For A Coastal 4th of July Weekend

For me, packing for a long weekend in summer is as easy and joyful as it gets because it’s literally just the same formula, year in and year out. The styles might change slightly, but the overall plan rarely requires updating. And thank goodness for that because honestly I don’t have the bandwidth for anything else right now. As always, I pack in one piece of hand luggage because if I don’t limit myself, I will just bring too many random, pointless things. I need structure, people. Anyway, this is what I’ve packed; I hope it may be helpful to you, and if you have any essentials you swear by, let me know in the comments.

3 Pairs of Shoes

For a long weekend, I can easily get away with just three styles at most: A flat sandal, a wedge sandal, and a sneaker.

Unsurprisingly my go-to sandal is the Havaianas Slim Square Flip Flops ($39), which I have worn to distraction since I bought them in March. I live in Southern California, where this level of casual is fine, but if you want something more formal, I also recommend the Beek Sunbeam Flip Flops ($132), which come in an array of leather colors. (PS: Or the fanciest version, The Row’s Beach Flip Flops ($820) are a fashion-girl favorite and now available in a range of sizes at Nordstrom.)

For a wedge sandal for night, I’m still desperately loyal to my Jamie Haller The Kit Slides ($800) in both black and camel. Shockingly comfy and versatile, you will grind these down to pennies per wear. Additionally, Staud makes a good chocolate mule for under $300. I also have Dolce Vita’s Qaily Wedges ($135) in brown suede, which are astonishingly soft.

As for sneakers, I feel that’s that’s a very personal choice, but this is my pick. Leopard, ofc.

3 Sundresses

I love a dress because it’s one and done. but if you’re a linen trouser person, obvi feel free to ignore and do your own thing. I’m packing my black and white polka dot Cara Cara Alba Dress (on sale $487) which is 30% off right now and one of the most comfortable things I own. Also packing the Doen Riviere Dress ($498) I have worn the hell out of since spring break. And I always throw in a linen Reformation dress, like the Monette Linen Dress ($198) which is great for day or dinner, or the Birdie Linen Dress ($298) which is a smidge more va-va-voom.

2 Sweaters / 1 Cardigan + 1 Beach Sweater

I always bring a Reformation Clara Cashmere Crew Cardigan ($198) to wear with the sundresses at night or you can style with the shorts. I also pack a relaxed cotton sweater to throw over my shoulders with the aforementioned shorts for cooler mornings.

1 Linen Pant + 1 Linen Short

I’m delighted to say that my Banana Republic Barrel-Leg Linen Pull-On Pants ($80 on sale) are 20% off right now and worth buying. I have two pairs, I like them so much! You can wear them over your swimsuit to the beach, then throw on a beach sweater at night and you’ll be good for the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club barbecue. Truly excellent trousers. I’m also bringing my BR The Soho Linen Shorts ($90) because they are slouchy and wide-legged and cool. Again, they’re the first shorts I have purchased in over 20 years and I love them. I wear them with vintage concert tees during the day and the cashmere cardi at night with a cute belt.

Assorted T-Shirts + Workout Clothes

One workout set and t-shirt for every day I’m gone. As for t-shirts, it’s always a mix of vintage baseball tees, graphic t-shirts I’ve stolen from my husband, and a couple of white t-shirts (see some of my favorites, here).

Undies & Bralettes & Sleeping Clothes

TikTok recently told me that we should be bringing 3 pairs of undies per day for each day we travel. To be honest, that seems fine to light? I always overpack in this department. As always, I wear Negative Whipped French Cut Briefs ($45) and Whipped Long Sleeve Shirts ($110) for sleeping, Top Secret Prop Top Bralettes ($45), and The Great’s The Jersey Crop Pants ($145) for lounging.

1 Day Bag & 1 Night Bag

I’m still a huge fan of Janessa Leone’s Tanner Bag ($487) for daytime, which I have in black and wear to the farmer’s market, with the kids at the park, and to the beach. I love that the straps will hold my wide-brimmed straw hat and that it never collects sand. Since my dinner looks are primarily black, I love a fun bag to make it a little more playful, so I’m taking my new The Great The Embroidered Cinched Bucket Bag ($185), which fits loads of stuff and looks chic.

1 Swim Suit + Cover Up

I’ve gotten so much better about not packing a thousand suits when I’m only going to wear one! As always, my suit is Left on Friday’s Sunday Top ($110) for active days and Sandy Top ($110) for lazier ones, both paired with the brand’s Hi Tide Bottoms ($110) and a J.Crew Relaxed Fit Beach Shirt ($64.50 on sale).

1 Hat (okay 2)

The aforementioned Janessa Leone Roma Hat ($287) is a favorite because it’s chic as hell and is UPF 50, but I also always have my beloved New Hampshire Public Radio Hat ($20) stashed in my bag as well.

Beauty Too

As always, my capsule beauty wardrobe goes in the Cadence The Large Parcel ($85) in Rose, with Small Capsules ($15) filled with Sofie Pavitt Face cleanser, Dr. Idriss sunscreen, and Tower 28 moisturizer. I also pack a Tower 28 mini hypochlorous acid spray, which I use on my face between sunscreen applications and seems to knock down any clogged pores. It’s also great on stinky areas if you are working out and don’t have immediate access to a shower. Makeup is simple: A smidge of Chanel lightweight foundation, swipe of the Dior bronzer I now know how to apply thanks to Joey Maalouf, Rhode blush in Freckle, Dior mascara for life, and Violette FR’s juicy lip balm/stick in candy apple red. And Roz Hair’s new wave texturizing mist, which is the best best best.

Hi everyone, and welcome back! Friends, right now I have the shoppies in such an intense way, which I assume is just the current manifestation of my general anxiety, but am I alone in this? Or do you have the shoppies too? Normally summer doesn’t get me going because it’s just a practical time and all outfits boil down to one single question: Will my sweat show in this? Not so inspiring, normally. But maybe it’s different right now because I’m having small moments of optimism due to sports, of all things?

I’m serious. Between the Knicks winning and seeing New Yorkers deservedly revel in their championship and all the stories about the World Cup—the Tartan Army putting cones on the statues in Boston, the Japanese fans trying Texas barbecue, and the German soccer fan Freddy visiting the Waffle House for the first time—I’m feeling very earnestly rah-rah #GoSports at the moment. Dare I say, I think I actually get why people care about this stuff now? Or at least I sure like how it brings folks together. That part is for certain. (Also, on a side note: Everything I know about the World Cup comes from Who What Wear’s resident sports expert, Eliza Huber. If you want a primer, this story helped me!)

On a side note: My beloved Valentino Vain Shoulder Bag (now $2790; normally $4650) is not inexpensive at this current sale price, but I’ve never seen this low before. All three colors—black, cream, and brow—are part of the Saks sale, and when I tell you it’s a really well-made, chic bag that stores a ton, I mean it. And while you’re there, Celine’s 50mm Square Cat-Eye Sunglasses (now $288; normally $480) in shiny dark brown gradient smoke are also on sale, and truly timeless. I love an inexpensive pair of sunglasses, but I will say that Celine sunglasses fundamentally level up a look and are rarely this price. And finally, if you haven’t splurged on a bitchy white pump for summer (they’re having a moment, for sure), I can personally recommend Jimmy Choo’s Amelia 35mm Leather Pumps (now $397.50; normally $795) which are truly cunty (compliment). Unrelated, but has anyone tried the brand’s jelly sandals? Are they squeaky? I keep hearing the Chloe ones are so comfortable, but squeaky.

But going back to the aforementioned summer shoppies: While I am not decamping to Sardinia or Nantucket or Mexico City, alas, I do have loads of little local summer plans and parties on the books and a family to dress. For my daughter, I just got this Boden V-Waist Woven Dress ($39.20 on sale) in Bluejay Cherry Stripe for the Fourth of July. I also have this darling H&M Tiered Seersucker Dress ($20) in blue/strawberries and the red/striped too. She wore the red/striped one to Disneyland last weekend and it was perfect for a long, hot day. My son is really into color and prints right now, and Boden does a great job with both, so he got a Cotton Linen Shirt ($36) in Green Palm Tree with matching Cotton Linen Shorts ($36).

My summer dress for every and any occasion? Doen’s Riviere Dress ($498) which I got for our spring holidays and haven’t stopped wearing. It’s perfect with slim square Havianas for beach parties, Jamie Haller low cork wedges for dinner parties, or a sassy heeled thong for date night. I love it because the combination of a deliciously full skirt and the high, squared neckline make my waist look practically dainty. Plus you can wear this dress around kids, grandparents, and work colleagues alike. I think I’ve worn it once a week since March, and have no plans to change that cadence any time soon. I also have a J.Crew Reverie Dress ($84.50 on sale) coming, and the brand’s Scallop-Trim Mini Dress ($178) which is very Doen-coded and totally not me, but I think it will make me feel like a goth Lux Lisbon from The Virgin Suicides and yes, that’s still a vibe I am after. Plus sometimes you just want to wear something that doesn’t touch your body, and that’s this.

For my husband, we have been all about Todd Snyder lately—and by “lately” I mean a couple of years—as they make some super chic sweater polos that I just love and he does too. They also make really excellent linen shorts in smart colors that feel polished without being too preppy. And according to my husband, the relaxed leisure pants are excellent for warm weather, if your fellow isn’t into shorts.

And finally, let’s talk about shoes that you can walk 20,000 steps in and still feel great! First let me start by saying I am lucky in the foot department, in many ways. While frequent readers know my deal—high arch, high instep, and a short, wide shape—I don’t have fussy feet. Meaning: I don’t use insoles in my shoes and my arches feel supported on their own at this point. I know this is not a given for everyone.

With that in mind, I recently had two very walking-forward days and accidentally tested two different shoes. I say “accidentally” because for the first day, I had no idea I would walk that much at the Huntington Botanical Gardens, but boy oh boy we did. I’m not sure what I thought would happen there—yes, I’ve been before, but it was for a Rodarte show and I had no idea the space was so immense—but we went everywhere, and by the end of the day I had clocked over 20,000 steps in my beloved leopard Jamie Haller loafers and guess what? My feet felt great. Not sore, no blisters, and completely comfortable. It was hot out, but despite the heat, my feet didn’t feel particularly sweaty or swollen, which is wild to me. (FWIW there’s are a few leopard pairs currently on her site and all-black pair at Net-A-Porter now too.)

Additionally, I did another 20,000 steps the following Saturday at Disneyland wearing an old pair of black Chucks and my beloved Banana Republic Barrel-Leg Linen Pull-On Pants ($100) and I was as comfortable as I could be, given that I’m afraid of rides, crowds, and strangers’ children. Despite the fact that it was in the mid-80s, my feet were 100% normal at the end of the day and I was totally comfortable in those trousers. (Also shout out to Clare V’s Grande Fanny Bag ($395) in the black/cream woven checker for being exactly the hands-free tote I needed and Baublebar’s Minnie Mouse Classic Ears Headband ($45) for the bringing the whole look together.)

I booked another session with Joey recently because my bronzing skills are truly non existent. I didn’t own any product, and even when I did own some, once upon a time ago, I didn’t know what I was doing with it. I would just indiscriminately cover my face with bronzer, and ended up looking vaguely muddy and dirty.

But unlike contour, which doesn’t personally interest me at this moment, slash maybe ever, bronzer is a product I wanted to learn because my face doesn’t match my body. See, I always slather my face in sunscreen and hide it under a giant hat. However, I’m lazier about shielding the rest of my body, and considering how much I walk my puppy, the result is I am somewhat two-toned, and would like a fix for that!

Could I watch a tutorial on TikTok? Sure. Or a video on YouTube? Most definitely. But if you haven’t realized it yet, I’m a fussy Virgo who likes my information spoon-fed by an actual expert, so I booked another appointment with Joey and got to work.

The Products:

While you don’t need these exact products, this is what Joey recommended I pick up, and I did.

-Makeup by Mario EF 1 Dual-Ended Cream and Powder Makeup Brush ($26) to be used with the Hung Vanngo bronzer

THE PROCESS

Forehead

Starting with the Hung Vanngo cream bronzer and the Sephora PRO foundation brush, dip the flat part of the brush into the bronzer, making sure the white bristles are picking up the product.

Use the back of your hand as a palette, and tap the brush onto the back of your hand to remove excess product and disperse the remaining product evenly in the brush.

Starting with the forehead, apply bronzer along the hairline, coming all the way down across the temples to the outer corner of the eyebrows. You need to make sure you’re getting the product all the way to your hairline, so there’s not a pale gap there.

The key is blending. “You don’t want to see a halo of bronzer; you want it melted into the skin,” Joey says. Also, don’t take the bronzer too far down your forehead; you want the center of your forehead to be a smidge lighter. You will need to reload your brush a couple of times and pick up more product; just remember to use the back of your hand as a palette and tap the brush there before applying it to your face. And again: You need to blend. I know I keep writing that, but it’s everything.

Cheek

Using the same Hung Vanngo product and the same Sephora PRO foundation brush, you’re going to add a little bronzer to the top of your cheekbones. Again: Dip your brush in the product, and use the back of your hand as a palette to work in the product.

As for this application, I was surprised because you’re only applying it to the upper edge of the apple of your cheek. More specifically: Trace a line down from the very end of your eyebrow to your upper cheek, and then inward to the inner edge of your pupil. That’s the area. It’s tiny, really.

And yes, you gotta blend that product in so it melts into your skin. Again, you’re putting this where the sun would hit, on the peaks of your face.

Neck

Again, same product, same brush, but now we are going to warm up the neck. You don’t have to be super precise, you’re just harmonizing the color of your neck so there’s not a stark difference between your face, neck, and chest. And don’t forget the ears, especially if you’re wearing your hair up or in a ponytail.

Nose & Eyes

With the Makeup by Mario brush (using the shorter side) and the same product, do the usual dip into the product, bounce it on the back of your hand, and then trace the outer bridge of the nose up to the orbital bone and across your crease. You can always dip again and carve out your crease a little more; it just adds some definition to your eye socket. Also feel free to pop a little bronzer just under the center of your lip to play up your natural pout.

To Set

For the cream bronzer to last, you will want to go over many of the same places with the super fluffy blush brush and the Dior product, which is pretty translucent, but will also set your bronzer. It’s like setting powder! But it also adds subtle color!

Once again, the technique is the same. You’re going to dip your brush into the product, tap it on the back of your hand, and then tap over the areas you put the cream bronzer. “You want just a light veil of it,” Joey says. He also pointed out that this product has a very light scent, but both of us like it.

Tap the Dior powder bronzer on your forehead, the top of your cheek, and your neck. Then, take the fluffy side of the smaller Makeup by Mario brush, dip it into the Dior product, tap it on the back of your hand, and then go over all the smaller places you bronzed on your face: Under your lip, the side of your nose, and in the orbital crease.

And voila! A little bronze, a little glow, just for you.

Hi everyone, and welcome back. As always, I’m thrilled you’re here. Today, I wanted to start out this note with a personal PSA, which is that health is wealth and if you’re reading this and remember playing with a Flower Makin’ Basket as a kid or slow danced to “End of the Road” by Boyz II Men in junior high, you should probably schedule your colonoscopy.

“Ew, Hillary, why are you writing about butt stuff in your newsletter?” Well, I finally got my first colonoscopy this past week, after putting it off for over a year, and the whole thing was so much less awful than I’d imagined, I feel it’s my duty to talk about it and encourage folks to be proactive about getting one, if they cann. (I realize this is coming from a place of privilege, as I do have insurance and great medical care that gently nudged me into doing it, and that’s not the case for everyone.)

Also, I posted about my experience on social media this past week, and was surprised by the number of stories I heard, questions that came in, and the fact that some of the information I shared was new knowledge. That feedback was really encouraging, and pushed me to write about it here because colonoscopies save lives.

For me, the tipping point came from social media and science. I saw a social video about the remarkable way that colonoscopies work, how your doctor can remove polyps before they turn into cancer. By the time a lump shows up on your mammogram, it’s already cancer, but if you catch a pre-cancerous polyp early via your colonoscopy, you can remove it before it turns evil and cancerous and spreads. It’s like Minority Report for cancer, in a good way, from what I understand from the film synopsis. (Obvi I have never seen it.) The point is, I love the idea of truly smart, preventative care, and suddenly a colonoscopy felt like a no brainer.

Weirdly, the part I was most concerned about was the prep, and by “prep” I mean “liquid fast.” I hate being hungry, and a day of clear liquids scared me. Turns out Erewhon’s very expensive chicken bone broth is allowed, delicious—truly the first bone broth I’ve ever liked—and full of protein, so I actually felt like my blood sugar was stable all day.

As for the meds part, I did the prescription liquid, which wasn’t great, but I mixed it with very cold water and drank it with a straw, to minimize taste. I’m a former sorority girl, and can assure you I’ve tasted many grosser things in my day. (Also, they apparently have pills you can take instead for a slightly higher price, but I wasn’t given the option and didn’t fight for it.) My prep involved drinking the meds at 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., and then I was done and in bed by about 12:30 a.m., which also wasn’t so awful, though I know that varies for folks. Oh, and I did a low-fiber diet for the two days before my broth day, which might have helped. Also, I was told by friends to “never trust a fart” during this process, and let me tell you: Those are wise words. Also, the evacuation part isn’t painful, just copious.

On my appointment day, I checked in for surgery at 8:30 a.m., was in the operating room by 9:15 a.m., and woke up in recovery a little after 10 a.m. to the wonderful news that I was polyp free and that I could have a coffee and some crackers whilst waiting for my husband to pick me up.

Truthfully, the biggest surprise of the process was my lack of information about the aftercare. According to the documents I got at check-in, you’re not supposed to drive, sign legal documents, drink alcohol, or go back to work/school for 24 hours after your procedure. I had virtual meetings scheduled in the afternoon, and definitely wasn’t my best self, especially as I had a rather bold headache by mid-afternoon. Honestly, I wish I had just taken to my bed and watched Love Island instead, and I’m sad I didn’t plan better.

While I know this is a significant amount of real estate to dedicate to a relatively routine procedure, I also know that I’m not the only one who dragged her feet about taking this step, and that’s despite having heaps of information, motivation, and privilege. And I’m hoping that by being transparent about the process, it might inspire some of you to schedule your colonoscopy today.

What I Got Right: Low-fiber diet ahead of time, delicious bone broth, not trusting farts.

What I Got Wrong: Eating too much at my first post-procedure meal, attending work meetings that afternoon, waiting too long to schedule this appointment.

One last thing: If you have a family history of polyps, gynecologic or breast cancer, or colorectal cancers, you might qualify for an early colonoscopy. Same is true for having any symptoms, of any kind. As someone who has a familial history of endometrial and uterine cancers, and polyps, I was also a candidate for the Invitae Common Hereditary Cancers Panel, which is a blood test that evaluates 47 genes that are associated with things like breast cancer (like BRCA) and colon cancer (specifically the mutations that cause Lynch Syndrome or Familial Adenomatous Polyposis, which increase your risk), A negative test result doesn’t mean you can’t or won’t get these cancers, as many are environmental, but still good to know. I took this test, which was also covered by insurance due to family history, via my OB/GYN’s office, and am grateful for the additional information.

SHOP: The Great The Embroidered Cinched Bucket Bag ($185)

I don’t know about you, but I’m really excited about the fact that there are so many fun bags on the market right now. Because I love an easy, personality-forward summer bag, especially when it’s as versatile as this one from my beloved The Great. Available in black or white, the bag is made from heavy satin, is large enough to carry a decent-sized wallet, sunglasses, phone, and small makeup kit, and just looks cool with everything from jeans to little white sundresses to evening date night looks. The bag feels like it’s spiritual friends with the Connor Ives demi couture vintage silk robes, but at normal-girl prices. I love it so much, and 11/10 recommend buying it with your hard-earned money.

BUY: Roz Hair Wave Texturizing Mist ($35)

Look, I will be the first to admit that I’m biased, that I love Roz Hair, that I buy the products for everyone in my life, that my daughter’s hair perpetually smells like the brand’s leave-in conditioner hair serum, that I think founder Mara Rozak is one of the only good founders out there, and that I wish I’d invested in this brand with every fiber of my being. But I also can say that this mist is the real of a deal. It’s a texture-enhancing sea salt spray that doesn’t leave your hair crunchy, or dried out, but gives it that great piece-y look. For me, I’ve been spraying it on my curls to fuck them up a little bit and take away the preciousness, but it’s also good on day-two hair as a bit of a refresh. It’s one of the best products to come out of Roz, and I should know. I own them all.

TRY: Rixo Meg Leopard Polka Dot Midi Dress ($415)

If you know me IRL, be prepared to see this dress on repeat, and I expect you to ignore the fact that I’ve worn it over and over again. It’s that good. I love Rixo, but this might be my favorite dress they’ve made, and it’s available in regular or petite fit in sizes 2 through 22. The lightweight viscose crepe is surprisingly good for summer evenings, and the little sleeves make it so you don’t even need a jacket. I love how it looks sans belt, though I’ve also been pairing it with my Khaite studded belt (Madewell makes a similar one at a fraction of the price), and have my eye on Rixo’s Calista Zandra Animal Brown Belt ($195), too. One thing to note: The fashion girlies will notice when you wear this dress. I wore it to a panel my husband was doing with some of the team from Nobody Wants This, and the show’s costume designer Negar Ali Kline and co-star Jackie Tohn (who plays Esther so brilliantly) both clocked it correctly within seconds of me walking into the greenroom. Truly, an honor to be seen!

MAKE: Baked By Melissa’s Strawberry Chia Seed Pudding

Like all women in my demographic, I am lightly thinking about things like gut health, protein consumption, and fibermaxxing. The latter is particularly on my mind, as my cholesterol levels—which have always been on the higher side; thanks genetics—were up at my last annual, and my incredible integrative women’s health doctor, the brilliant Dr. Suzanne Gilberg, has been nudging me to incorporate more chia seeds, flaxseeds, and/or psyllium husk into my breakfast. Also, I’ve read that colonoscopies can mildly disrupt your microbiome, and that increased fiber intake helps it recover more quickly.

All of this made me finally make the viral strawberry chia seed pudding that was popularized by Melissa Ben-Ishay, the founder of Baked by Melissa, and my god it’s special. For the record, I made a couple of tweaks from the published recipe. First, I don’t have vanilla paste in the house at the moment, so I used a tablespoon of good vanilla extract instead. I’m a lunatic, so I used approximately half a container of Harry’s Berries for the strawberry portion of the recipe. I also added some salt to the mixture, which Melissa does in some of her social videos, but isn’t included in the written recipe, for some reason. Also, per my friend Danielle, I used half full-fat plain Greek yogurt and half non-fat plain Greek yogurt.

I made the pudding a couple of nights ago, let it firm up overnight, and honestly it’s incredible. So easy and fast, truly delicious, And according to a recipe calculator I found online (so, take with a grain of salt), a 1/2 cup serving gives you about 8 grams of dietary fiber and 16 grams of protein, which isn’t a bad start to the day. Also, if you like strawberries as much as I do, it’s delicious; did I say that already? Let me be clear: It’s delicious.

WATCH: Love Island USA, Season 8 (Peacock)

Look, I will be honest: I have never watched the American version of Love Island before. I’m a Love Island UK loyalist (Megan from Season 4 will always have a place in my heart), and haven’t really been tempted by the American version, but I’ve really enjoyed watching last season’s runner-up Olandria Carthen dominate the red carpet and beauty worlds, so I figured it might be time to get into the show. So far, it’s just the sort of nonsense I need right now whilst waiting for the LA mayoral results to drop (c’mon Raman and Bass!). If you are a Love Island USA fan, is there an older season I should watch?

The Perfect Year-Round Casual Jacket: Alex Mill Painter Jacket ($250)

If you’ve been low-grade smitten with the blue The Row jacket that Harry Styles has been wearing for the last year and a half, and wondering if you need a similar piece—inspired by a French chore jacket that was first popularized in the 1800s—I’m here to say: Yes, yes you do.

If your name is Jeffrey Bezos (ew), you could buy one of The Row options on eBay at considerable prices, but I think this is a perfectly acceptable time to go for a dupe. After all, the original is technically a designer dupe that’s based on a workwear classic, right?

The iteration that I’m quite thrilled about is from the brilliant brand Alex Mill, and honestly it’s truly exactly what I wanted. Made from a sturdy, soft cotton and with an oversized cut, it’s the perfect shape to wear whilst traveling (plenty of pockets make it ideal for the plane), on dog walks, styled casually with slouchy linen soft pants, or even dressed up. Harry sometimes wears his with slutty shorts, which I think would look peachy, too. I have a medium, which honestly feels a little too big, so would recommend sizing down, unless you like a really oversized fit.

Workout Clothes I Don’t Hate:

As someone who despises shopping for workout clothes, I have been challenged, as of late. My go-to workout pants are disintegrating and covered in weird bleach stains (my fault), and I can’t replace them because I’m no longer shopping the site where they’re from, and my reliable Target sports bra that was cheap and good enough has been discontinued. Sigh.

And while I still like my Free People Movement square-neck sports bras, my preferred style is a racerback that doesn’t have zips or hooks and is sturdy enough for my trampoline shenanigans. So a whim, I bought a couple of styles from Nordstrom, and lo and behold I actually love them both. My go-to is the one from Rhone, which feels very moisture wicking and fancy, but the Vuori one has a sporty higher neck that I also really like and is a softer knit that feels less synthetic (it’s not).

I also recently tried a newer-to-me brand called Stretch Your Story, which is a workout gear that was created by top South Korean athleisure brand, Andar, for the US market. Friends, the fabric is phenomenal, and I’m thrilled about the workout pants in particular, which are extremely flattering, a phrase I hate but is apt, and feels quite expensive. They are one of the best fancy workout pants I think I’ve ever tried, which is saying something. I love the ButterFlow High Rise Legging 23” ($68), as they have a wide waistband that compresses you nicely without making you feel squished. Also, they make these leggings in a handful of colors, two different inseams, and they also come in an Asia fit. Totally worth it, especially on sale, as they are now. As always, I take a medium in everything, which is standard for me.

Nordstrom Half Yearly Sale

Took a quick spin through Nordy’s sale and here’s what I think is worth it: Jimmy Choo’s Romy 85 Suede Pumps ($477, now 40% off) are excellent, timeless heels in a great dark navy, which is very hard to find! AGOLDE’s 90s Pinch Waist Straight Leg Jeans ($166; 30% off) is the dark, clean wash that will work for the office and for date night. Celine’s Triomphe 52mm Oval Sunglasses ($368; now 33% off) are universally flattering and in the best red. Perfect pop of color for every summer to come forever. Staub’s 11-Inch Enameled Cast Iron Traditional Skillet ($179; 33% off) is the pan I use the most in my kitchen. It’s truly a dream piece and cleans so easily. Also available in a cheerful yellow and they have a ton of other great pieces on sale, too like this little tomato dish! Also, the Toteme Medium Day Suede Tote ($1155; 30% off) is just a perfect simple suede bag.

Todd Snyder Silk-Cotten Ribbed Sweater Polo ($248)

Take your pick with this brand, you can’t miss. If there’s one person who I trust with expert advice (aside from AHEM my wife) it’s Derek Guy, who co-signs in a big way here. For me a regular pique polo is kinda boring, but Todd Snyder has a ton of great knits that make things way more interesting, like this option.

HK Note: I started buying this brand after interviewing stylists Wendi Ferreira and Nicole DeJulio for the Who What Wear podcast. They dress the likes of Jacob Elordi, Chris Pine, and Seth Rogan, so I figured they would know, and I was right. Todd Snyder makes great stuff for guys.

Socks Upgrade: ROTOTO + Anonymous ($30)

I’m in the old-man phase where I care about socks. When I open that drawer I want to be faced with a bunch of high quality, great-looking options. These two Japanese brands are my favorites right now, tons of styles and colors to choose from.

Garrett Wade Japanese Set of 4 Saws ($154)

If your favorite woodworker hasn’t tried a Japanese style hand saw, this affordable 4-piece set makes it easy to give it a try. Super satisfying workshop upgrade.

Moscot Glasses

I went to the Masters golf tournament this year and wore my prescription Lemtosh frames with clip-on sunglass shades, and everyone wanted to know what they were and where I got them. Moscot is an old American company with great history behind it, making tons of options I love– but probably my favorite frame right now is the Dahven ($340).

HK NOTE: Jamie Haller Men’s Loafers ($725)

Jonathan wasn’t going to put this one in because he acknowledges that they’re spendy, but we both agree that these are incredibly lovely, admittedly splurgy shoes. They’re handmade in Italy, the Sacchetto construction fits the foot like a glove, and they feel incredible on. Jon says to take your regular size.

Casio GA2100-1A1 Watch ($110)

Sometimes called a “Casiok” because of its resemblance to the classic Audemars Piguet design, this all-black version is a super clean, super tough timepiece that could go on any wrist.

Miyota 8215 mechanical movement, 80s budget-luxe style, fun nostalgia trip even for guys with much more expensive watches on the nightstand.

Longtime readers know I went on a quest for the perfect towels in February 2024, and the top towel award went to Matouk’s Milagro Towels (now $58.80; 20% off), which were not on sale then, but they are now. These are the best looking and performing towels for the money. Yes, Wirecutter and others love Frontgate. IMHO they’re too heavy and they have this wide band that’s just not as chic. Hi everyone! I’m so glad you’re here. It’s been a rather busy week since we last caught up, between a new episode of the Who What Wear podcast, featuring James Yardley—Connor Storrie’s stylist, yes that Connor Storrie from Heated Rivalry—and the Dior Cruise 2027 show under LACMA’s new David Geffen Galleries, which I was lucky enough to attend. Going to fashion shows is honestly such an honor; I love seeing a designer’s full vision come to life, there’s really nothing like it. For the Dior show, I was in heaven; between the Hitchcockian lighting and the Ed Ruscha-collab shirts and the screenplay show notes, it was a true love letter to film and art. I assume that we will see more of creative director Jonathan Anderson’s work in Hollywood, both on the stars who flock to his work and in his costume design collaborations with directors like Luca Guadagnino.

On the pod front, while menswear doesn’t always intrigue me as much as womenswear, James Yardley is a phenomenal interview and really delighted me with some behind-the-red-carpet stories. He really got into the details of what it’s like to style someone who is having such immediate, overnight, phenomenal success and what it’s like working with a client who has not just one but two ambassador roles to consider. If you have a moment, I think it’s worth watching or listening to, and as always, it’s available on YouTube, Spotify (which also has video), and Apple Podcasts.

One last thing before we dive into today’s story. For a variety of reasons, this week has been stressful, mostly due to my day job. While there’s a lot I cannot control, one thing that always makes me feel better when I’m feeling challenged is to give back in some small way. I am incredibly lucky to have this newsletter and such a wonderful community, and I just wanted to say thank you. Reading has always been my escape, so I decided to do a giveaway with some of books I’ve enjoyed recently. I’m going to do one set for free subscribers and one set for paid subscribers. WHITE T-SHIRTS

I want to start this story by acknowledging that my white t-shirt needs might not be the same as your needs—and that’s okay. When I originally wrote this story back in 2022, I also started out by saying, this is not about the cheapest best t-shirt or the most universally appealing white t-shirt. These are t-shirts that stylists, fashion insiders, and editors have recommended, as well as best-selling styles from some of the most popular stores in the country. Interestingly enough—at least to me—only one and a half styles from the original story made the cut this time around. Also worth noting: I actually steamed my shirts this time. And that’s on growth! As always, to keep the focus on the shirt, I kept the same shoes and skirt for the whole story, and just swapped out my tees.

The Coolest Cropped Tee: Made Revival The Topanga Tee ($78)

Style Notes: Cropped hemline. Cozy, vintage hand feel. 100% Cotton. Perfect for higher-waisted skirts or jeans.

I’ve written about my love for Made Revival before, and this t-shirt comes highly recommended by my friend Jane Herman too, who in addition to having an excellent Substack and brand (more on that in a minute), knows more about jeans and what to wear with jeans than anyone I know. She said the shirt was perfect, and it is. I am wearing the small here, and it truly delights me, but I also have a medium, which fits just as well. True to size, but quite cropped, this is the shirt you need to pair with your high-waisted pieces. It is also the most IYKYK one on this list, and officially cool-girl approved.

The Lightweight Layering Tee: James Perse Vintage Little Boy Tee ($90)

Style Notes: Classic shape. 100% Cotton. Thinner, but not transparent. Feels polished.

James Perse is expensive, but classic, and for good reason. They make some of the best t-shirts on the market, and they really last. I’d go so far as to say they look better the older they get, which is not the case for most tees. This one is ideal for the office, layering under a blazer, or would be great for date night too. It has a wonderful hand feel and is very lightweight without being transparent. No wonder this is one of their top-selling styles of all time. Mine is a size 2, but the 1 fits too. They’re not that different; it’s just more about your vibe.

The Inexpensive Classic Tee: Hanes Boys 5-Pack Crew Neck T-Shirts ($11.50)

Style Notes: Longer body. 50% Cotton 50% Poly. No tags. Color is a little blue-white.

I am often accused of being too spendy, which is fair feedback, but I also won’t put something in this newsletter unless I really like it, so know that when I say this boys’ t-shirt is great, I actually mean it. I’m a size 4 or 6 in most tops, and I bought these t-shirts in both a boys large and extra large, and honestly I love them both! (I’m wearing the extra large, below.) To me, these are great tucking-in t-shirts, as they run on the long side. But honestly, I’m into you, Hanes.

The Relaxed Linen Tee: Aritzia Loom Linen Quay T-Shirt ($50)

Style Notes; Very oversized. Slightly more sheer, but not aggressively so. 100% linen.

You Aritzia heads are intense! I got more recommendations for Artizia than just about any other brand, and I ended up buying six different styles to test. For me, most of the styles were too stretchy or too thick; I do not personally thrill to a super body-conscious option, but if you’re in the mood for that, Aritzia does it very well. (The HomeStretch Rib Tune T-Shirt ($28) is pretty great in a sturdy Skims kind of way. I also liked the Wisp Cotton Nysa T-Shirt ($38), which is made from a lovely cotton jersey, if you like cotton jersey.) This shirt reminds me just a little bit of the very early iterations of The Row’s t-shirt; do you remember when they had some that were almost burnout-y? Maybe too niche. Maybe too old? Either way, I miss fancy t-shirts that have a little texture to them, so I really liked this one. I got a small and it’s very very big, so note that when shopping.

The Day-To-Night Tee: Reformation Max Slim Tee ($48)

Style Notes: Very lightweight and soft. Slimmer fit. 60% Organic Cotton, 40% Tencel.

Year after year, I return to Reformation for black linen midi dresses and easy tanks, but I hadn’t paid as much attention to their t-shirt game, and that was a mistake on my part. If you’re looking for a thin, super soft shirt that will show the a bit of your bra (complimentary), this style is for you. In another life, I would have worn this tee out with a short, a-line leather skirt and a bitchy pump, and then slept in it because it felt so nice. Now I will do the opposite and sleep in it, then wear it out with Jamie Haller trousers and leopard kitten heels, Same same, but different.

The Fancy Classic Tee: The Only Jane Matty Tee ($140)

Style Notes: Longer body, so good for tucking in. Super soft. Totally opaque. Ecru, so it’s not white-white, which is flattering, as is the longer sleeve. 100% Supima cotton.

Full disclosure, my aforementioned friend Jane makes this t-shirt, but I bought it via her website without telling her. As with everything she does, this is an amazing t-shirt. It has a slightly looser, slightly boxy fit with a relaxed sleeve and it feels like it’s twice as expensive as it is. This is a forever t-shirt. Designed to go with jeans, of course, but also unquestionably nice enough for a creative office and will be my go-to work t-shirt going forward. Also, FWIW, I think I like her Ace Tank ($120) as much? I have a medium in the Matty Tee and a small in the Ace Tank, and I think I probably should have gotten a small in the Matty, but I also like it being a little looser so do with that what you will.

The Worth-The-Investment Tee: The Great The Boxy Crew ($95)

Style Notes: Relaxed fit, yummy worn-in feel. Perfectly angled sleeves and a longer body. Opaque. Washed white; it’s a softer color. Feels like vintage but better. 100% Cotton.

The only shirt that was on my 2022 list that I think still belongs on this list! While I’m typically a Slim Tee (95) girly, I find myself reaching for this slouchy, borrowed-from-the-boys style over and over again. The fabric really holds up; the one I’m wearing here I actually bought in 2021 and it still looks great. It’s perfectly nonchalant, which I think is deeply cool and sexy.

HONORABLE MENTIONS:

Mother The Itty Bitty Ringer Tee ($120): A textured ringer tee! It’s so ‘70s and cutie! Looks even more expensive than it is. Just a winner. I took a small.

Amo Love Tee ($118): I think this one is a stretch jersey, and maybe the only one of the bunch in this round up. I was pleasantly surprised by how lovely the material feels.

J.Crew Vintage Jersey Classic-Fit Crewneck T-Shirt ($19.50 on sale now) An excellent, straightforward, classic tee. I size up to a medium in this one for a slouchier fit, or a small (which is my normal size in J.Crew tops) for a sleeker look.

Hi everyone, and welcome back. I’m so glad you’re here. This week—aside from getting reacquainted with all the epidemiologists and public health officials I follow on social media; always nerve wracking when they start popping up with increased frequency, but I really appreciate and respect their work—I found myself humbled to learn that there is something positive about Facebook. Color me surprised! About every six months or so I find myself on the site (yes, I deleted the app from my phone ages ago), just to see what’s going on. Aside from wondering why my grade school friends haven’t deactivated their parents’ accounts, ahem, I was curious about why anyone visits FB anymore, and asked folks on IG.

The answer was clear and resounding: Marketplace is the new Craigslist, and you can find incredible things once you season your algorithm. A very chic friend is decorating his home in Connecticut and showed me a table he recently purchased for $250, and I was stunned. I’m sure many of you already know this about Marketplace, but on the off chance you were ignorant like me, voila!

Also, before we delve into today’s story, a quick note. For my fellow Enneagram-curious folks, I interviewed the brilliant author and coach Courtney Smith for Second Life recently, and it’s fascinating, to say the least. She also has a Substack, for those who want more. I also interviewed the founder of puzzle (and more) company Piecework and author of Lady Tremaine Rachel Hochhauser for the pod, and I loved hearing about Rachel’s career journey and her process for writing one of the best books you’ll read this summer. I wrote about my love of Lady Tremaine a few weeks ago, and if you haven’t picked it up, that should be high on your to-do list.

BUY: Gap Linen-Blend Maxi Slip Skirt (now $47.97) in brown polka dots

Zac Posen made me do it, and that is the beauty of the Met Gala. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual fundraiser for the Costume Institute—fashion’s biggest night—happened earlier this week, and as always, I enjoy seeing the highs and lows of how brands interpret the annual theme. (And for what it’s worth, I was so delighted to read that the Institute has almost saved enough money to support itself going forward. Equally good: Away’s Jennifer Rubio and her husband recently endowed the museum with enough money that the Met can offer paid internships in perpetuity. This is how you rich right, in my humble opinion.)

Anyway, Zac Posen—who is the Executive Vice President and Creative Director of Gap Inc., and Chief Creative Officer of Old Navy—created a dress for Kendall Jenner that was inspired by the Winged Victory of Samothrace, and it got me thinking about Gap enough to send me to the brand’s site. Truthfully, I’d been meaning to go, as I’m still working on an update to my 2022 best white t-shirts story, and many of you had mentioned your fondness for some of Gap’s options.

Long story long, I ended up buying a few things whilst browsing, and found a couple of pieces that are worth sharing. Even better: Gap’s 40% Off Friends & Family sale is going on right now, which is very excellent, especially if you’re looking to stock up on some summer staples, like me.

This skirt in particular is giving Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, and I’m here for it. Super comfortable, true to size, and just a dreamy piece for the price. It also comes in an array of other colors, three different lengths (regular, tall, and petite) and in sizes from XXS to XXL. Personally I also like the black gingham, the navy polka dots, and the chocolate brown options.

TRY: A Emery The Wright Leather Skirt ($690)

I am a longtime fan of Australian brand A. Emery’s sandals, specifically: I have their Jalen Sandals ($280) in multiple colors and they remain in heavy rotation in my wardrobe because they look cool but feel absolutely amazing. I also have a sweater from the brand that I wore all winter long, but I hadn’t really delved into any of their tailored or structured clothing until now. As you’re well aware, I love a black leather midi skirt, and have several (from Esse Studio, Ulla Johnson, and A.L.C.) that I wear all the time. And while my most lightweight leather skirt will be okay for warmer weather, it can still be a bit much. So when I saw that A. Emery designed a shorter pencil skirt version, I jumped, and I’m so glad I did. It’s incredibly cool and well made; I particularly like the zipper is on the back of the skirt, which makes for such a nice fit.

And FWIW, Sezane also makes a similar silhouette; the Magalia Skirt ($310) comes in a glossy leather version, and Modern Citizen makes the Briony Back-Slit Vegan Leather Skirt ($148) in a range of sizes that goes up to 1X. Zara also makes a few options; personally I think the ZW Collection Limited Edition Coco Leather Skirt ($269) is a cool option, which offers an embossed croc-like look.

FOLLOW: Hodge Templeman

Earlier this year, the company I work for acquired the amazing London-based brand Sheerluxe, which I think was a brilliant move, as the team is insanely talented and I adore all of the content they create. I have loved getting to know the team over the past few months, and if Sheerluxe’s head of broadcasting and talent isn’t on your radar, she should be. Sarah Templeman, who goes by Hodge (it’s a long story), is so chic and my current trousers inspo. I love how she layers, her smart mix of high street and more expensive pieces, and she personally put me onto the genius layering piece that is the Intimissimi Modal Cashmere Ultralight High Neck Top ($65). In addition to a great social account, I also love her ShopMy feed, which has everything organized and lets you shop her IG looks, which is nice

SHOP: Saks Fifth Avenue May Sale

I was delighted to see that my beloved black and white polka dot Cara Cara Alba Polka Dot Midi Dress (normally $695; $595 with SHOPMAY code) is part of the sale. It also comes in a pretty pale blue and floral version, that would be really lovely for summer baby showers, graduations, and even a casual daytime garden wedding. I find it to be true to size. I also love the brand’s Carmen Floral Cotton Midi Dress, which has an easy shirred bodice. Also on my list: Staud’s Sonoma Lace-Trim Silk Midi Skirt ($495 normally; now $395 with code) because yes, lace-trim pieces are still a thing, and no I’m not going to wear the shorts version, as cute as it may be. Also, while still a splurge, I was stunned to see that the very classic, rarely discounted Manolo Blahnik Maysli 70MM Suede Slingback Pumps ($1045 normally; now $795) are part of the sale. I have an olive green pair and friends, they are spectacular. Currently black, dark red, dark green, and light pink are all available. These are forever shoes, in my humble opinion. Also, as someone who hates, hates, hates paying full price for an evening bag or clutch, just a nudge that Simkhai’s Bridget Brass Oyster Bag ($495 normally; $395 now) is available in the sale in both gold or silver. Cult Gaia’s bestselling Mini Nala Metallic Leather Clutch ($498 normally; $398) is also available in gold or silver, if you’re looking for something smaller.

WATCH: Hacks (HBO Max)

I know that I have been championing this show since the beginning—the pilot is one of the best I have ever seen, just flawless from start to finish—and now we have reached the end. The current fifth season is also the final season, and I really cannot recommend it enough. If my accolades are not enough, consider the fact that it has received 12 Emmys thus far, including for best comedy series a couple of years ago, and star Jean Smart is truly a national treasure.

Hi everyone, and welcome back. I’m so glad you’re here. Does anyone else feel nostalgic at this time of year? I assume it’s because we’re in the last rush of the school year, as my calendar keeps filling up with a thousand different kid presentations and projects. My friend once said something about how the last month of the school year is not unlike the rush that happens between Thanksgiving and the end-of-year holidays, and I think she’s spot on with that. Plus, next week also marks the four-year anniversary of selling Who What Wear to our parent company Future PLC, after 16 years of running it independently.

It seems wild to me that I’m still in a version of my job. My original plan was to stay a year to make sure my team was protected and had adjusted to corporate life, but my bosses saw how much I love media and the brands in our company, and kept luring me in with more opportunities for growth. And now here I am, four years later, working with some of the most incredible brands in the world, as I run our Style and Luxury, Homes, Music, Photography and Design portfolios, alongside a brilliant slate of leaders and editorial talent. And at the same time, I’m working with the Who What Wear team to prep for our upcoming 20th anniversary, which is happening this fall.

So yeah, I’m feeling a little nostalgic, which I run anyways, but it feels especially pointed right now. It’s weirdly hard to admit, because I feel like there is some level of collective disdain for personal nostalgia. Like we should always be looking forward, and even a glance over our shoulders at who we once were is embarrassing. For me, I think it actually can be grounding, to see how far we’ve come, and how much we’ve evolved. Whether that’s a brand that has grown into a fully formed entity of its own, or your kid who went from knowing a handful of sight words to reading chapter books in just a few months.

In other news, I know this can be a tender time of year for folks in regards to Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. For those of you who have complicated relationships or have lost a parental figure or just don’t want to deal with it for a variety of other reasons, I did include a few recommendations for moms at the end of the story, if you want to skip it. Either way, sending you all love for this upcoming weekend.

Jamie Haller Men’s Penny Loafers ($725)

When I saw that the beloved Jamie Haller was making her insanely good loafers for men, I actually gasped with joy. I think she makes the best loafers in the world, and I was so excited that my husband would be able to enjoy them too. (Yes, we both wear loafers, jean jackets, and love army green; we are that couple.) As always, they are absolutely an investment, but for the right recipient, they are worth every penny because they’re so damn chic and well made. My husband usually wears an 11.5 or 12, so I got him a 44 and they’re a perfect fit, though the brand suggests sizing down, so we are at odds on that advice. If I were you, I’d buy a pair for the man in your life immediately, because there is no doubt these will sell out, as Jamie’s loafers always do. (And lest you need more convincing, even Wirecutter says these are the best loafers around, and they never recommend expensive apparel or footwear. Just saying.)

Yesteryear ($25) by Caro Claire Burke

Is it just me or are we in a golden moment for fiction and memoirs? After feeling uninspired for a few months, there’s just so much goodness available right now, and I’m thrilled. Earlier this week, I went to a work lunch and everyone was talking about Yesteryear in particular, which I’m a quarter of the way through and am enjoying so much that I’m begging you to buy it so we can discuss. J.Crew Scrunchie Swim

Until I had kids, I wore one type of swimsuit exclusively: Triangle top bikini with a side-tie bottom. After having kids, I wanted more support and security for playing in the pool with my kids, so I moved into sportier styles—longtime readers know I love Left on Friday to bits—but after our recent trip to Kauai, I started wondering if it was time to work something strappier back into my swim wardrobe. On a whim, I picked up J.Crew’s Scrunchie String Bikini Top ($69.50 on sale now) and Cheeky String Bikini Bottom ($49.50) first in a red and navy stripe, and now in black because it’s on sale and I love it so much. I have a medium in both, and I find them completely excellent and cute. The material is a delight, and yes, they also have a Scrunchie Bikini Bottom ($69.50) with more coverage, if that’s your preference.

I’m wearing them with the Linen Soleil Pants ($98) in navy, which to me are the perfect weekend/beach/pool linen pant. They’re super lightweight and flowy, and TTS. (I wouldn’t wear the Soleil pants to work; they’re just too casual. The Cosmo Pants ($109.50 on sale now) are a more structured linen blend that I prefer for a non-client facing work day.)

Also worth your time: The Large Handknotted Packable Tote Bag ($124.50 on sale now) which I wish had been available for my trip. It packs flat—a dream—and is ideal for not only the beach, but also farmers’ market shopping, as it has a large, square bottom and double leather handles. Slouchy and structured, it’s kind of ideal for any summer daytime outing.

Bellami Hair Extensions

Earlier this week, before I accidentally chopped off an inch and half of my bangs and made myself look like Wanda Woodward, Traci Lord’s character in Cry Baby, I had the opportunity to try a new-to-me type of hair extensions at Bellami’s beauty bar in West Hollywood. As someone who has long dabbled with clip-in hair pieces for on-camera work and special events, I am no stranger to faux hair, but this was the first time I’d tried their Halo Pro Extensions ($360), which is ideal for folks who have very limited hair styling skills (me). The coolest part is you can go to the salon to get color matched for free—there are several around the country—and you can also book an appointment to get them trimmed to work best with your existing haircut and length, and installed if you need additional help.

That said, putting in a Halo is surprisingly easy; you literally just section your head and slip it on. The hair is strung on a really thin wire hanger that is absolutely imperceptible when it’s on. Truly; once I got it in place, I couldn’t feel a thing, and you can’t see the wire even if you try really hard. Even wilder; my family didn’t notice when I came home wearing one. Everyone—my husband, kids, and parents—noticed that my hair looked great, but no one thought I was wearing extensions. It’s that natural in real life. Mother’s Day

I know I am an absolute cynic about, well, most commercialized holidays, but Mother’s Day means something to my mom, so I’m committed to celebrating on her behalf. As such, this list isn’t about what I would like, but technically I do like all these things because I own them. That’s part of the fun of my relationship with my mom; she just cherry picks her favorites from my home and wardrobe, and then I buy it for her.

Anything Flamingo Estate. Seriously, it’s a no-brainer. Recently my mom remarked on how wonderful my Flamingo Estate Heirloom Tomato Hand Soap ($50) smells, which is correct; it’s heavenly. And it’s expensive, so it feels like a treat, especially when paired with the Heirloom Tomato Hand Lotion ($70). Also falls into my go-to gifting strategy of upgrading someone’s everyday essentials. I also highly recommend the Green Goddess Soap Brick ($46), which I currently store in my underwear drawer and wish the FE team would turn into a body lotion. The Green Goddess Candle ($64) is divine too, perfectly herbaceous and soothing. It’s unusual, but perfect. And speaking of little luxuries, the Spicy Strawberry Fruit Snack ($82) is bonkers good and mega luxurious, because they use Harry’s Berries and the perfect kick of chiles.

Bath Upgrade. One of the things I love doing for my mom is upgrading her drugstore shower staples with some of my go-to essentials. That means Roz Foundation Shampoo ($39) and Foundation Conditioner ($42), Necessaire The Body Wash ($28) in Hinoki, Kiehl’s Creme de Corps Body Moisturizer ($39), a Hanni The Fatty Moisture Stick ($30), and Dr. Idriss’s Major Fade SPF 50 Sunscreen ($38).

Cookbooks & Design Books

Eating at Home: The Nourishing Practice of Everyday Cooking ($33) by Trinity Mouzon Wofford

I had the pleasure of interviewing Trinity for Second Life in 2021, and was wholly impressed by her entrepreneurial vision and calm energy as we talked about her company Golde and the superfood essentials she’s created. So when I heard she’d written a cookbook, I was intrigued. When I actually got the book, I was elated. Trinity is an excellent home cook who wrote a thoughtful, actually-usable cookbook that’s already been named one of the best cookbooks of 2026 by Bon Appetit. The cookbook has a gorgeous, highly appealing, earthy ‘70s-adjacent aesthetic and is super approachable, even for moms who mostly like to microwave.

Sarah Sherman Samuel: The Intersection of Art and Design ($60) by Sarah Sherman Samuel

Another one of my favorite Second Life interviews, Sarah is a phenomenal AD100 designer who is known for her delicious design work with clients like Mandy Moore and her great ongoing collaboration with Lulu and Georgia. I adore Sarah’s taste and love supporting her in any way I can because she’s actually a really lovely person, but even if she was a total pill, this book would still be well worth your money. She’s really that talented.

Riviera: Recipes from the Coast of France & Italy ($40) by Melanie Masarin

Because three’s a charm, I have yet another amazing book from yet another amazing Second Life guest, the founder of Ghia and one of the chicest women I know, Melanie Masarin. Again these are decidedly unfussy recipes, but with big pay off, gorgeous photos, and lots of excellent food styling tips. I’m personally obsessed with the pasta al limone, but the whole thing is excellent from start to finish.

I will say, one of the things I like best about getting older is having more experiences to draw from, and it’s pretty wild how much that history can regulate my system. So despite the fact that it feels like everything is being upended right now, that there are huge macro changes going on in every industry, and that everything feels like it’s on the verge of a reboot or catastrophe, I’m trying to remind myself that I’ve been through bigger bumps and swings before, and that we—collectively—can do this.

We can build a better world, we can evolve, we can change for the better. So if you’re feeling a smidge overwhelmed, first of all, you’re not alone, and secondly, I have found that appreciating the little things makes a big difference. Trite, sure, but also true. Spend time with your people. Read a good book. Call your friends. Take your dog for a walk. Find delight in the little treasures that come your way. And on that note, here are a few of the things that have been keeping me steady this week. I hope they help you, too.

PS: I just noticed that Banana Republic is having a sale this weekend, and as someone who is newly reengaged with the brand as a shopper (though a longtime fan of all things BR), I wanted to point out that many of my recent purchases are 30% right now. If I could only recommend one thing, it would be their Barrel-Leg Linen Pull-On Pants (normally $100; now $70), which I own in black in a medium and have become my go-to travel pants and the piece I pull on at home at least three days a week. They’re comfortable enough for long-haul flights, look good for running errands, and I’m such a huge fan. Yes, they get a little wrinkly because they’re 100% linen, but not aggressively so. Also, I hate shorts with the fire of a thousands suns, but I have worn my BR The Soho Shorts (normally $90; now $63) a half dozen times in the last month.

I don’t really talk about it much, but my secret joy is TikTok. It has become a light substitute for TV for me, and I love it so much because my algo has correctly identified that I am interested in all sorts of nerdy things, and I’ve come across some of the most remarkable folks this way. One of those creators is Isabel Klee, who posts under the handle @simonsits, and fosters dogs in New York City. Like the rest of her million-plus followers, I check in with her regularly to see the medically or behaviorally complex dogs she fosters, and watch them bloom thanks to her kindness and patience. It’s truly one of the best corners of the internet.

Naturally I was curious when I read that she’d written a memoir, which comes out on Tuesday, but to be totally transparent, my hopes were measured—and that was a mistake. Isabel wrote the most wonderful book about living in New York as a young person, navigating relationships and building a life even when you feel lost, and of course, the transformative power of loving dogs. Isabel’s writing is thoughtful and present, she reflects on her struggles with relationships with an incredible level of honesty and candor, and I walked away from reading it feeling incredibly satisfied that the internet made the right person famous. It’s truly a gem, and I hope you get a chance to check it out this week.

FOLLOW: Linda Cui Zhang

Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of attending a Nordstrom and Manolo Blahnik lunch, celebrating Nordstrom’s 125th anniversary—how mind boggling is that?—and an exclusive summer capsule collection the Manolo team created for the occasion. In addition to having the extreme pleasure of meeting Kristina Blahnik and Jodie Blake, the brand’s brilliant CEO and CMO, respectively, I also got to spend a smidge of time with Linda Cui Zhang, Nordstrom’s Fashion Director, who also happens to be a bright breath of fresh air on the internet. I love her personal style and taste so much, and very much recommend taking a look at her Instagram account and following, if you haven’t already.

TRY: Rhode Peptide Eye Prep in Banana Peel ($25) and Caffeine Reset Mask ($38)

One of my great beauty regrets of the last few years is not taking Rhode seriously because I assumed it was just for the youngs. That was a mistake, and I’m happy to say I was wrong. I think I was burned by one of the original millennial beauty companies, which I personally felt like was mostly good branding, because the products never hit for me, and I kind of assumed Rhode was working from the same playbook. But honestly, just about every Rhode product I have tried has actually impressed my jaded self, including this wonderful caffeinated 15-minute face mask. As someone who has to be on camera more than I want, this is quickly becoming a key step in prepping my skin before getting my makeup done, but it’s also just nice for when your skin is feeling blah. I also have been doubling up with the brand’s eye patches, which definitely is a winning combo, especially when you’re in your mid-40s like me.

BUY: Comfortable and Cute Summer Shoes | Soeur Emmette Slingbacks ($450) | Loeffler Randall Frank Red/Green Moire Flower Sandals ($375) | Beek Sunbeam Flip Flops ($139)

All currently in my personal rotation and bringing all the joy! I have to admit that I was slightly doubtful about the Sour brown leather slingbacks, only because the vamp is a bit on the higher side, and that can be a harder for my high instep feet. It’s giving glove flats, but the adjustable slingback makes them for an easy fit (especially if your feet differ by half a size, which makes flats challenging!) and the more airy look is obviously excellent for warmer months.

I am also deeply smitten with these delicious flower sandals from Loeffler Randall. (Also, if you haven’t heard my episode of Second Life with the brand’s founder, Jessie Randall, who also writes an excellent Substack, I would highly recommend checking both out!) One thing that’s really nice about this particular pair is that the flower really hides your toes, so if your pedicure isn’t perfect, or you have been too busy to get one, these sandals give you coverage. Also, if you’re wondering about fit, I think it’s quite similar to the brand’s bestselling Triana Sandals ($350), if that’s helpful.

Finally, while I’m still hugely into my Havaianas Slim Square Flip Flops ($34), which I now own in both black and chocolate brown, sometimes you need a slightly more formal flip flop (ha) in a pop of color, and Beek’s Sunbeams do just that. Mine are in the red Beach Tomato, which I think looks really nice with an all-white look, but they do come in 10 other colors if you’re not into this particular hue.

SHOP: Clare V Sophia Sunglasses ($180)

Oh the joy of an actual big pair of sunglasses! I know the little ones have been having a moment, but I am a woman who wants drama in her frames, and that means something that takes up a large portion of my face. And on this request, my beloved Clare V is delivering. The Sophia is quickly becoming the style I reach for, and it’s available in both zebra tortoise and the perfect loden green, which I have purchased yet, but absolutely will.

Hi everyone, and welcome back (or simply welcome for the first time, if you’re one of the many new folks here). Before we dive in, I wanted to let you know that after many years of writing Hi Everyone, I have decided to add a paid option, but will still keep much of the newsletter free. Stories that are older than one year will be behind a paywall, but that’s it for now. I often struggle with knowing my own worth—an embarrassing thing to admit at this point in the game, but it’s the truth—both currently (taking so long to offer a paid option here or in salary negotiations at work) and historically (how I dated in my teens and twenties, for example, or in my own company, to be totally candid). It’s something I’m working on. So needless to say, if you choose to upgrade to a paid subscription, I would be deeply appreciative, but also I understand that not everyone can or wants to, which is why I’m still keeping so much of my content free. Anyway, just wanted to get that little announcement out of the way, and now onto today’s story.

Wait, but before we do this: I’ve been getting a lot of questions about updating a story I wrote back in 2022 called I Tried 23 Highly Recommended White T-Shirts. These Are The 5 Worth Keeping, and folks are asking for an update. When I look back at that story, I have some thoughts. Mostly I stand by the reporting, but there are a couple that absolutely would come off the list, and a few I would add immediately. (I’m particularly excited to try Jane Herman’s new styles, as she always knows what’s what.) So I’m going to update it soon, in time for spring and summer. The Surprisingly Versatile Jacket Style That Makes Everything I Wear Look Cooler

This is obvious, but the top lesson I’ve learned after working in fashion for the last nearly two decades is surprisingly simple: Jackets are the most powerful pieces in your wardrobe.

You know that old social media trend from a couple of years ago about the difference between wearing clothes and styling them? There are loads of little things that can transform an outfit from something basic into something more memorable—like the addition of a great belt, sharp sunglasses, lightweight layer, or pop of color—but nothing does as much heavy lifting as a great seasonless jacket. And that jacket can be anything: a suede barn jacket, timeless trench coat, or the perfect vintage-inspired, embroidered velvet piece. There are literally zillions of options at your disposal, depending on your personal style, budget, and taste.

All of that said, I have one style that I’m personally hyperfixated on right now, and maybe, just maybe, it’s what you’re looking for too?

The Drawstring Leather Jacket

While I will never retire my oversized sturdy leather moto, it’s heavy and not always exactly the vibe. What does feel delightfully current and surprisingly versatile is a cinched leather jacket, ideally in a slightly weird color. As longtime readers know, I’m besotted with celebrity stylist Rob Zangardi’s new investment-worthy, incredibly well-made outerwear line Auter—the faux fur Fox Jacket ($950) has my whole heart, and I also swear by the mocha Mohair Wool Topcoat ($1250), both of which are absolutely delicious and get pets every time I wear them—so it should come as no surprise that I fell for one of his new spring styles, the unisex Drawstring Leather Jacket ($3250). Is it very very expensive? Absolutely. Is it phenomenally soft and luxurious and will be something I wear until the wheels come off? Also yes.

I styled it for work the other day with a pair of Old Navy High-Waisted Wow Wide Leg Jeans ($28), Leset’s Margo Cotton Long-Sleeve T-Shirt ($78)—and yes, the Margo is perfect in both short and long sleeves—Khaite’s The Benny Studded Belt ($640), and Amina Muaddi Holli Slingback Pumps ($760), and loved every second of it. I like it undone and relaxed, as pictured here, or tightly cinched (keep scrolling) to give the jacket a blouson look. Plus the leather is so crazy soft, you can push it all the way up your forearms, which gives it some additional personality too. (Also, you know I’m not generally into dupes, but Madewell’s Western Studded Belt ($98), which is also available here in silver or gold, is a Who What Wear office favorite, and Veronica Beard’s Arch Studded Leather Belt ($250) is the only navy iteration I’ve seen, which is cool.)

Even better: There are lots of similar styles out there right now, like ASOS Design’s Drop Waist Cinched Leather Look Jacket ($159), which comes in burgundy and has an excellent high collar. I also adore Mango’s Leather Parka with Cinched Waist ($649), which is available in black leather and is a bit longer, and would look amazing with white jeans. All The Ways makes a similar style, the Corina Faux Leather Jacket ($119) that’s on sale right now too, and Helsa has a cool one too.

Best Beauty Sales: Nordstrom & Sephora

Did you know that Nordstrom was also having a beauty sale? It’s a quick one; the sale just started, ends on Monday, April 20th, and offers up to 25% off select beauty products. Here’s what I’d spend my money on (and by that I mean, this is actually what I purchased).

Nordstrom / Kiehl’s Creme de Corps Body Moisturizer ($13.50-$75 depending on size; all 25% off) I hate spending money on body products. It’s just not my thing and I think most drugstore stuff works just as well, if not better. The biggest expectation I will make is for Kiehl’s Creme de Corps. I don’t want to love it, I don’t want it to be so freaking luxurious and nourishing, but it just is. And it is expensive, so I truly will stock up when there is a sale like this. And while you’re shopping, I’d also grab their Super Fluid Daily UV Defense Broad Spectrum SPF 50+ Face Sunscreen ($35.25-$59.25 depending on size, all 25% off), which is really lightweight, never has made me rash up or break out, and is recommended for daily use by the Skin Cancer Foundation.

Nordstrom / Oribe Thick Dry Finishing Spray ($37.40 on sale) is one of my secret weapons for making my hair look more voluptuous, and it’s currently on sale, which is amazing. It extends the life of your blowout, and makes your post hot roller/curling iron waves look even better.

Nordstrom / RMS Beauty UnCoverup Concealer ($33.60 on sale) is truly the most amazing concealer I’ve ever used, and I say this as a certified concealer hater. Does that make me more or less trustworthy on the topic? I would say more, because I loathe this category of product so much, I have an annoyingly high bar. Here’s the thing about RMS Beauty; it’s the brainchild of a beloved, super insider makeup artist and the products are excellent. You know those big millennial-founded beauty brands that have become wildly famous? Literally they just knocked off Rose-Marie Swift’s offerings, especially this concealer. So why not go to the actual source?

Sephora Sale

I covered some of my top picks last week, but before the Sephora Sale ends on Monday, I wanted to add in a few of my additional favorites, with little to no explanation. Ready? Okay let’s go.

Complexion: Per last week’s story, I actually bought a bunch of stuff, and love some of it with some significance, including the new-to-me Danessa Myricks Beauty Yummy Skin Soothing Serum Skin Tint Foundation ($39), which is an Allure Best of Beauty winner and just insanely gorgeous and easy to use. I also bought and love m.ph by Mary Phillips Le Skin Weightless Serum Foundation ($39 on sale). Truly lightweight and extraordinary. And finally Merit’s Day Glow Dewy Highlighting Balm ($25) in Cava will forever be that girl for me.

Skin Care: If you’re looking for an easy moisturizer, try Facile’s Beyond There Rich Cream ($28) for more moisture, or Tower 28 Beauty’s SOS Daily Skin Barrier Redness Recovery Moisturizer ($24) which is extremely gentle and neutral, and one of my daily drivers. I also love Tower 28’s SOS Daily Hypochlorous Acid Spray for Breakouts and Redness ($12), which I keep in my beach bag and spray on my face between sunscreen applications. (This was a Dr. Idriss tip; the spray is a great refresh on a sweaty face before reapplying, and helps keep sunscreen and sweat-induced clogged pores at bay. You can also use it right after a workout if you can’t get in the shower immediately.)

I know I’ve said it before, but uneven skin tone is aging and unnecessary, and if you trusted me and already bought Dr. Idriss’s Mini Major Fade Set Serum & Cream with Vitamin C for Hyperpigmentation and Uneven Skin ($35 on sale), I also swear by her Major Fade Dark Spot AHA Face Mask ($38 on sale) which I use twice a week and is a game-changer. All of her stuff is. This one is also an Allure Best of Beauty winner.

Hair: For my money, K18’s Biomimetic Hairscience Mini HeatBounce Leave-In Conditioner Heat Protectant ($19 on sale) is worth ever penny and I use every time I dry and style my hair. With summer upon us, I also think now is the time to get Roz’s Foundation Hydrating & Reparative Hair Mask ($38), which I use at least once a week, but bump up when I’m spending more time in the pool, at the beach, or heat styling my hair. Crown Affair’s The Leave-In Conditioner Cream ($38) is also a daily driver in our house and smells yummy.

For context, here are my wins and mistakes from last year when we went to Maui, and this was the first installment of our trip, when we went to Hawaii. A few things have changed over the years for the better, like Hawaiian Airlines now flies in and out of Terminal 6 at LAX, which is an improvement! Packing in advance is still absolutely the way; I fully packed the kids the weekend before our Wednesday departure, and had planned all of my outfits well in advance too, which made things go much more smoothly. Mini Boden swimsuits are still top notch for kids, if you care. They are not inexpensive, but they hold up well, offer great sun protection, and I love the colors and prints. And I still believe in not buying a bunch of new stuff for a vacation, but a few pieces snuck in, no surprise.

Read on for what really worked, and also what I still haven’t gotten right.

Rhode: Even though I am decidedly older than Rhode’s target demographic, I have to say this shit is excellent, and I’m only mad I waited so long to try it. My favorites are the Pocket Blush Buildable Hydrating Cream Blush ($25) in any shade (I love Freckle and Piggy), the Peptide Lip Shape Contouring Lip Shaper ($24) in Press and Lunge, and the Glazing Milk Ceramide Facial Essence ($32) which is the perfect lightweight moisturizer before makeup.

Hanni: Longtime readers know I have a Hanni The Fatty Moisture Stick ($30) next to my bed and use it on my feet every night and have given it to all my girls. It’s critical. I also keep the Splash Salve In-Shower Body Moisturizer ($37) in stock at all times, as it’s so innovative and truly a moisturizing game changer.

12+ Things I Don’t Regret Packing

1. Left On Friday Sandy Top ($110) and Hi Tide Bottoms ($110)

I know, I know, I have been banging on about this brand for years, but I always come back to it because it’s peerless. Period. Even Wirecutter agrees that Left On Friday makes the best suits, and they don’t like to recommend expensive things. But unlike Wirecutter, I have been wearing my LOF suits for 6+ years now, and the old ones are still just as comfortable and supportive as they were when I bought them. Over the years, I’ve primarily recommended the Sunday Top ($110), which is more inclusive of cup sizing and definitely the best option if you’re active. Lately I’ve personally been into the more minimal Sandy Top, which I recommend sizing up in. (For example, I’m a medium in the Sunday Top and Hi Tide Bottoms, but I get a large for the Sandy Top.) This year I decided to stop fucking around with a zillion options, and just brought two Sandy Tops in black, two Hi Tide Bottoms in black, and one Sunday Top in black, and it was the best swim packing I’ve ever done.

2. J.Crew Relaxed Fit Beach Shirt ($68.50 on sale now)

Unlike in years past, I only brought one option for a pool cover-up, and it was this oversized linen-blend button-down shirt in black in a medium and it was perfect. Simple, understated, and easy.

3. Doen Riviere Dress ($495)

Get ready to be sick of seeing me in this dress because I never want to take it off. It’s the perfect blend of modern and vintage, with a fully lined skirt that feels heavy in the most luxurious way. I love the long skirt and the slightly open back, and the wide, square neckline makes your waist look small, if you’re into that kind of thing. (I admit, I am.) One note: I’m normally a medium in all things Doen, but I found this dress to be smaller in the chest, so I sized up to avoid squishing.

4. Havaianas Slim Square Flip Flops ($34)

Thank you to everyone who recommended these flips a few weeks ago: They are perfect. Cute, comfy, and honestly I have no notes. I wore them more than any other shoes I packed, and I think they looked as good with my dinner dresses as they did my beach attire. I’m a 38 in most shoes, and the 7/8 size fits perfectly.

5. Jamie Haller The Kit Slides ($660)

The comfort? Unmatched. I have both the black and the camel, and I’m so glad I splurged for both because there’s nothing better than the perfect minimal wedge for summer, and that’s what these are. I packed the black ones and wore them a boatload, and love how easy they are to walk in and how simple the design is. Zero regrets.

6. Cara Cara Alba Dress ($695)

I’m not saying you need this exact dress, but I am saying that you need a perfect dress, and this one does it for me. I bought this style last year in a black and floral print—which I also brought and wore!—and so when I saw the polka dot iteration, I knew it needed to be mine, and I’m right. Easy to dress up and down and it didn’t wrinkle. 11/10.

7. Banana Republic The Soho Linen Shorts ($90)

As I wrote a couple of weeks ago, no one is more surprised than me that I bought and love these linen shorts. I literally haven’t worn shorts since Kappa rush week circa 2000. But these are phenomenal and swishy and slouchy and cool and I’m so glad I had them on this trip. I wore them with my Jamie Haller mules, a BR linen shirt, and a two-tone leather belt, also from Banana, and was as happy as can be.

8. Jimmy Choo Lou Sunglasses ($315)

Are these a splurge? Absolutely. Are they also half the price of most designer sunglasses these days? Also yes. Did I love how they elevated my really simple outfits? You bet. They’re just a simple cat-eye frame, but the sharper edges make them look a little bitchy, in the best possible way. And I can use that, personally. Gives strong “don’t bother me vibes,” which I like!

9. Aloha Water Resistant Pouch ($46)

I will never stop shouting about how much I love these bags. We packed our still-wet swimsuits in our Aloha pouches and they didn’t drip a single drop of salt water in our bags. These are my go-to wet bags for my kids, and I love them for any beach or pool day. Plus they’re also excellent for cosmetics, because they truly do not leak. We have them in a range of styles and sizes and they are truly excellent.

10. J.Crew Cosmo Pants ($148)

If you are looking for a linen-blend pant that can go from the beach to the office (yes, I said it), this one is for you. They are not your typical slouchy, wrinkly linen pants; they’re much more structured in the legs, with a great front crease, and I love that they’ll work for a casual work day as well.

11. Janessa Leone Tanner Bag ($468)

This is the ultimate beach-to-regular-life bag that has the added bonus of holding your wide-brimmed hat on the outside! I got this bag a couple of years ago, and I have worn the heck out of it and have given it as a gift, and everyone always loves it. Self included. It’s also available in a natural color that’s great too. And PS: This is the newest version of my go-to hat, which is perfect.

12. Target 7-Piece Packing Cube Set ($35)

I have fancy packing cube sets and I have inexpensive ones, and truthfully they all do the job. I bought this set for my son for this trip, and it worked beautifully. I have different colors for my daughter and myself, and it makes things so easy. One note: I have a black set from another brand and I do not recommend, especially if you wear as much black as I do. Black clothes in a black packing cube is not the way.

Books

Last year, I said I packed too many books for myself, and that I should have known better. Well my kids are slightly older, and that meant more independent playing, which meant I got to actually read! I tore through Lady Tremaine ($26) by Rachel Hochhauser, which was mildly nerveracking, but excellent, and the most literary of the bunch; The Heir Apparent ($26) by Rebecca Armitage, which was an absolute beach read confection; and the twisty, never terrifying, perfectly suspenseful Anatomy of an Alibi ($27) by Ashley Elston, who also wrote First Lie Wins, which I recommended when it came out and love. I’m also working on Emma Straub’s American Fantasy ($27), which is also delicious so far.

What Didn’t Work

Overall, I feel like this was the best version of packing for spring break I’ve done yet. The biggest mistake for me was not working out as much as I’d planned, which meant I lugged workout shoes and clothing all the way to Kauai for no real reason. I think part of my lack of exercise is because the north shore’s weather changes a lot, so when it was sunny, I really wanted to be at the beach.

I also packed my go-to Birkenstocks, which I didn’t wear once, as I was living in my Havianas. Also I packed one too many handbags: I had my Janessa Leone beach bag, a cute J.Crew Top Handle Bag in Straw and Leather ($116.50 on sale now), and my black suede Chloe bracelet bag, which might have been one bag too many?

Additionally, I forgot my prescription sunglasses, which meant reading with sunglasses on top of my frames, which just isn’t the vibe.

I’m so curious about your recommendations for summer travel this year? Are there any newer hotels or destinations that you’re already booking?

I’m just back from my first visit to Scotland and the Scottish Highlands with WildLand, a project I’d been tracking long enough that I’d already booked a family there last December, before I’d ever set foot on the property myself. WildLand owns 225,000 acres across three Highland regions, with options ranging from one-bedroom self-catering bothies to fully-staffed 12-bedroom Aldourie Castle on the banks of Loch Ness. I don’t consider myself a crunchy granola nature gal, but the rugged beauty of the Highlands really stirred something in me, and I think it has something for everyone.

Their newest property, Hope Lodge, will flex between a hotel-style guesthouse and exclusive-use property depending on the time of year. It opens in just a few weeks. I scored a hard-hat tour and it is going to be extraordinary. Hope was designed by Cécile & Boyd, the South African studio behind Singita’s lodges for three decades. The thread connecting those two worlds - conservation-led hospitality in landscapes of almost impossible beauty - is one I find increasingly compelling. Both WildLand and Singita genuinely feel like forces for good in the world, and that matters more and more to me in terms of where I’m sending clients.

Italy is a perennial favorite, and the Dolomites are hitting their stride. Forestis continues to earn rave reviews, and now in addition to their adults-only hotel they have Forestis Villa, a high-end private rental suitable for guests of all ages. One of the reasons I love booking Italy is the high concentration of family-owned and independent properties. One of the finest examples is Le Sirenuse on the Amalfi Coast. Their stunning, ultra-exclusive beach club, Le Sirenuse Mare, opens in late April, and I’m certain it will be one of the hottest tickets of the summer.

I’ve been planning a lot of holidays in France this year. It feels like Paris is having a moment, the vibes are really great right now and the hotel scene has never been more exciting. I’m very much into Provence; it’s vast and varied and endlessly rewarding. Aix-en-Provence, the Luberon, the Alpilles, the Camargue—the region is wonderfully varied and chock full of fab places to stay. Mid-September through October is my personal favorite time on the Côte d’Azur. The crowds have thinned and the sea is still plenty warm. Oft-overlooked Nice is brilliant as a base, with a hotel scene that has transformed completely with the opening of Hôtel du Couvent.

What are the hardest bookings to make and how early should folks think about them?

Japan is the most challenging request to navigate right now, without question. Demand shows absolutely no signs of slowing, and the shortage of English-speaking guides and drivers means the best ones are booked up to a year in advance. If you want a properly curated, end-to-end luxury experience with the right guides, the right ryokans, and the right private access you need to be talking to me twelve months out. That said, Japan has a lot of hotel inventory, and if excellent hotels with a more flexible on-the-ground experience is what you’re after, I can work with a shorter window.

African safaris are in the same category. Properties like Singita, Jack’s Camp and Duke’s Camp operate with intentionally limited capacity to keep their environmental footprint low. Twelve to eighteen months is the rule here, not the exception. Singita Elela is opening their first Botswana property in the Okavango Delta this December, so now is a good time to think about 2027 or 2028. Just eight individual stilted camps, each with a private guide, host and vehicle. It is one of the most sought-after bookings in Africa, and the time to secure it is now.

For end-of-year travel the stakes are higher than any other time of year, because unlike summer there is only one festive season and the window to course-correct is essentially zero. The most finite resource in travel is space. I can pull many a proverbial rabbit out of the hat, but I cannot conjure a room that doesn’t exist. Anything remotely bucket list-y will book up a year or more in advance. Exploring Raja Ampat aboard Rascal Voyages was hands down the best travel experience of my life thus far, and is one such example.

If you have any 2026 travel plans on the horizon, book your flights now. Premium cabin inventory has never been tighter and fares are going to go up thanks to the recent spike in fuel costs, unfortunately. That said, I’ve yet to personally see some of the more hysterical fare increase predictions come to pass. So don’t panic, but do plan ahead. Fares are not going to go down.

And while we’re talking logistics: Pull out your passport right now and check the expiration date. You’d be surprised how many people don’t think about this until the week before their trip. You need a minimum of six months validity beyond your return date. If you’re traveling with under-18s, remember their passports are only valid for five years. One of my own passports expires in May 2027 and I’m about to renew it, to give you an idea.

Are there any locations that you’re avoiding right now? Obviously there are safety concerns in the Middle East right now, but is that impacting Egypt and Morocco bookings? Or are there any spots that will be overly crowded due to major events?

Honestly? I’m personally trying to avoid travel within the United States that requires flights. I hate crowds and I hate long lines of any kind, and between TSA chaos and the general state of domestic air travel right now, traveling within the US feels more stressful to me than almost anywhere else I could go. I’m also personally avoiding anything World Cup-related and keeping an eye on dates and cities hosting key matches. I just can’t see a scenario where travel to and from these matches goes smoothly with just over two months until kickoff, but that’s just me. I’d love to be proven wrong!

On the Middle East question: I like to cross-reference US State Department guidance with advisories from other countries. Australia takes a very cautious approach and is a good one to check, as is the EU or UK. Looking at multiple sources gives me a more holistic, less politically charged read on any given situation. That said, I have had zero cancellations for Egypt and Morocco in 2026 and am actively booking both. It helps enormously that these are two countries I know deeply and personally. My clients can see that I was in Egypt with my dad in February—the trip of his lifetime, he said—and in Morocco last fall. That firsthand presence matters. It signals that I wouldn’t send someone somewhere I wouldn’t go myself.

Ultimately, every traveler has to make their own assessment of what feels right for them, and I deeply respect that. My job is to give you the most accurate, well-rounded picture I can and then support whatever decision you make.

Are there any airlines that are doing a really great job?

I can’t believe I’m about to say this but: United is trying, and it’s working. I’ve seen a lot of improvements here, from upgraded cabins to Starlink wifi, which by contract has to be offered for free. Food has suddenly become edible. United has been on a tear with some fab new nonstop routes: Newark to Bari (for Puglia) and Palermo (for Sicily), Split (Croatia), Glasgow (Scotland) and Bilbao (Spain) to name a few, as well as Washington Dulles to Reykjavik, Iceland. From SFO they now offer nonstop service to Adelaide, Australia.

That said, I don’t think any of the US carriers are doing a truly great job. The moment you fly the likes of a Singapore Airlines, you realize quite starkly how low the bar has been set domestically. Last year I took what is currently the longest commercial flight in the world—Singapore to New York, 18.5 hours—and I’ll be honest, it was strange, but not awful. The business class seats were cavernous, service impeccable and food incredibly tasty. It’s just in another league when you compare with what we’re used to domestically.

The Middle Eastern carriers—Emirates, Etihad, Qatar—deserve real credit for how gracefully they’ve navigated the current crisis affecting their hubs. They’ve been genuinely wonderful at looking after passengers who found themselves stranded, including covering hotel costs. That kind of care under pressure says a lot about an airline.

Air New Zealand is another one I rate highly. And when I’m booking for myself, I actively seek out the A380 or A350. Both are quieter, more comfortable, and easier on your body over long distances. It’s worth checking the aircraft type before you book. It can make an enormous difference.

What about airports or connections to avoid? A couple of years ago there were lots of snafus with the airport in Amsterdam, and more recently Newark has been a problem. Do you have any predictions for this summer?

It’s no secret that the US aviation system is under real strain. ATC staffing shortages haven’t improved since we spoke last year, when I called out Newark. So what to do? If you’re connecting through a major US hub this summer, build in as much buffer time as you possibly can—three hours at an absolute bare minimum. All three New York area airports are problematic at the moment, and I’d avoid them where possible. We’re in a “lesser of three evils” situation when it comes to JFK vs Newark vs LaGuardia.

The fewer US connections in your itinerary this summer, the better. If you’re flying from the US to Europe, for example, get across the Atlantic as directly as possible. Once you’re in Europe, most major hubs are running smoothly, with Zurich and Munich being the easiest to navigate. Even London has improved vastly, helped in no small part by the rollout of new security scanners. No more removing liquids from your hand luggage, no more silly ziploc bag limits.

Two airports I’d actively try to avoid for European connections are Paris CDG and Madrid, both of which have layouts that are confusing and simply not conducive to transfers. If you must connect at either, a customs concierge service is less of a luxury and more of a necessity.

For anyone based on the west coast, this might be a good year to consider visiting Australia, New Zealand, Fiji or Tahiti or anywhere in Asia really. There are heaps of nonstops from the west coast to Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong…between the three you easily connect to so many wonderful destinations. Vietnam Airlines even has a nonstop between SFO and Ho Chi Minh City. I absolutely love Vietnam and I wish I had more time to elaborate!

For anyone who hasn’t read our other interviews, I want to point out that you and I have similar hotel preferences, in that we like smaller, boutique hotels, generally speaking. What are some of your favorite, extremely special hotels on your list right now? Big or small!

Let’s start with Italy and the absolutely brilliant Collegio alla Querce, Auberge Resorts’ first European property, set just barely outside of Florence city center. I just spoke about it at length on Travel Weekly’s podcast The Last Resort. My personal city favorites—the ones I book for myself—are Rhinoceros Roma and Singer Palace in Rome, Londra Palace Venezia or Ca di Dio in Venice, The Place in Florence and Vico Milano. On the full service 5-star luxury side of things, post-renovation Four Seasons Milan is the best hotel in a city that is absolutely chock-a-block with brilliant options.

On Lake Como, Passalacqua gets all the attention, and rightfully so, but don’t overlook Mandarin Oriental Lago di Como. Please ignore the rumor that one side of the lake is sunnier than the other. One side gets sunrise, the other gets sunset. They are equally glorious. Oh, and the darling and super-stylish couple who own Vico Milano will be opening their second property on Lake Como in 2028. I just found that out last week so you heard it here first! Villa Igiea, a Rocco Forte Hotel in Palermo, is one of my favorite hotels in the world, full stop. I could wax poetic about boutique properties that I love on Sicily: Casa Lawa, Principe di Salina, Monaci delle Terre Nere, Le Calette Hotel…just to rattle off a few favorites off the top of my head.

I know that we both adore Chateau Voltaire in Paris. I stayed there in the fall and it’s still great—in fact I think the service has improved. I also stayed at newcomer La Fondation in the 17th and it is a find, let me tell you! It’s giving TriBeca vibes with interiors by Roman & Williams, a rooftop bar with Eiffel Tower views, a semi-Olympic pool in the basement and a rock climbing wall. It functions simultaneously as a hotel, a wellness club and a co-working space, and is particularly great for a longer stay. I loved being in that neighborhood. It’s very much the Paris that locals actually live in.

Beyond Italy, I want to talk about Capella, which I think I’ve mentioned before. It’s not a widely known brand among casual travelers, particularly here in the States because it’s a relatively small collection with fewer than ten properties globally, most of which are in Asia. Capella Ubud is in my personal top five hotel stays ever. You can find this luxe tented camp all over my Instagram. Other standouts are Singapore and Hanoi, and I’m busting to visit their new hotel in Taipei. And while we’re talking Asia, the Shinmonzen in Kyoto might just be my favorite hotel in Japan right now. That or the resplendent Bulgari Tokyo.

You know what you would love? Sterrekopje Farm. It’s in South Africa, about an hour outside of Cape Town. All meals, drinks, a daily spa treatment and a whole philosophy of life included in the rate. Ingredients are harvested from the garden before they reach your plate, and the days are structured around the rhythms of the farm rather than a hotel schedule. Pottery, yoga, sound healing, bakery classes, horses. The owners Fleur and Nicole are just the absolute nicest and are very much part of the magic.

There are more than a few openings I’m really excited about, and they’re probably not the usual suspects you see on every “best of” list. I believe lists make travel more boring and I personally wish they would go away. Number one for me is Casa Bonavita on Malta opens this summer, perfect to pair with Delta’s new nonstop from JFK. I’m really hoping to visit before word gets out. NIHI is expanding from Sumba with a second Indonesian resort, NIHI Rote, as well as NIHI Santo Tomás in Costa Rica. And Orient Express is expanding on the success of La Minerva in Rome with Orient Express Venezia. I’ve been privy to some pre-opening images and videos and it is going to be a hotel of epic, extraordinary beauty.

Are there any new hotels or flight routes that have caught your eye?

The nonstop route expansion in 2026 is genuinely exciting, and as a bit of an Avgeek I could talk about this all day. Here are a few that have caught my eye in addition to that nonstop between JFK and Valetta, the capital of Malta.

Alaska Airlines is making its transatlantic debut with Seattle to Rome, a huge deal for travelers based in the Pacific Northwest who’ve always had to connect before reaching Italy. Delta has also expanded significantly out of Seattle with nonstops to Rome and Barcelona, and Royal Air Maroc is launching the first-ever nonstop between the US West Coast and Africa: Los Angeles to Casablanca.

American is launching Dallas to Athens and Dallas to Zurich, plus Philadelphia to Prague. And JetBlue has new service from Boston to both Milan and Barcelona, though a word of caution here: JetBlue and increasingly American Airlines are relying on the long range narrow body A321neo. In layman’s terms this means long haul flights on a relatively small 3-aisle-3 plane. I wouldn’t recommend this in economy class.

More nonstops between secondary cities means more interesting itineraries, fewer connections, and less time in airports. All good things.

Let’s talk local: Are there any destinations in the United States or North America that are looking great for summer holidays?

In North America, Auberge Resorts continues to deliver and The Lodge at Blue Sky, Stanly Ranch, Mattei’s Tavern, and Mayflower Inn are still favorites. Ted Turner’s Vermejo Reserve in New Mexico. San Ysidro Ranch, and Hotel Bel-Air remain Southern California icons, One & Only Moonlight Basin is exceptional in Montana, and I’m watching the new Oketer Collection Vinetta in Palm Beach.

For something truly extraordinary: Sheldon Chalet in Alaska. Five bedrooms, accessible by helicopter only, 6,000 feet up inside Denali National Park, private chef and guides included. Nothing else like it on earth.

Summer is my favorite time to visit Hawaii and the Caribbean. Rates drop, crowds thin—no waking up at 5 a.m. to snag a beach chair, because what’s relaxing about that? A few Hawaii favorites: Kona Village, a Rosewood Resort; Four Seasons Resort Lanai; Sensei Lanai; and the adults-only Hotel Wailea on Maui. One update worth knowing: the Montage Kapalua Bay that you booked for spring break last year is reportedly becoming a St. Regis. For the Caribbean, I love St. Barths, and Turks and Caicos in May, June, and July. A few favorites: Eden Roc and Fouquet’s Saint-Barth, COMO Parrot Cay, and Pine Cay on Turks and Caicos.

Nimmo Bay in British Columbia’s Great Bear Rainforest is a family-owned wilderness retreat reachable only by floatplane. Glacier hikes, grizzly bears, floating sauna and another bucket-list worthy nature forward property that I’m currently crushing on.

Can we talk more about family-friendly spots that don’t feel like a Disney cruise?

For families who want something more active and nature-forward, Switzerland, Austria, and Germany are great options, and easy to combine with one another. Switzerland in particular is extraordinary. The train network alone is a lesson in how infrastructure can be genuinely joyful, and the lakes and mountains give kids something real to do. The Alpina Gstaad and Badrutt’s Palace in St. Moritz both do family hospitality beautifully, with seriously great programming tailored to children. In Austria, Rosewood Schloss Fuschl—a restored 15th century castle on the banks of Lake Fuschl—is magical for families, with hiking, biking, kayaking and swimming on the doorstep. Bavaria is underrated as a family destination: Munich is endlessly entertaining for kids, and the surrounding countryside, castles and lakes make for one of the great European road trip circuits. This part of the world rewards slow travel and curious families in equal measure.

Greece is another wonderful destination for families. The Four Seasons Astir Palace on the Athens Riviera is a brilliant base with three private beaches just 30 minutes from the Acropolis. Older kids who are into ancient history will have their minds blown by Athens, and the hotel gives everyone the downtime and beach access to balance it out. I also love pairing Athens with the Peloponnese on the Greek mainland. Ancient ruins, incredible beaches, and no need to hassle with Athens airport to reach your destination.

Let’s talk “fly & flop”, those easy breezy beach resort destinations perfect for splish splashing around. Four Seasons Punta Mita for family friendly pools, calm beach and a quick flight from California. Jumby Bay, Antigua—a private island that’s genuinely magical for little ones. Sandy Lane, Barbados is a classic that’s impeccable for families. Four Seasons Hualalai, Big Island is arguably the best for tiny kids in Hawaii. Round Hill in Jamaica. None of these are a bargain, but in summer rates will be much less than they are during festive or spring break.

Once you’re traveling with two or more kids plus grandparents or extended family, a fully staffed exclusive-use property often makes a more financial sense than a hotel and delivers a far better experience. Your own pool, your own schedule, someone cooking breakfast while the kids are still in their pajamas. When you split the cost across multiple bedrooms, the per-person price often compares very favorably to several hotel rooms at a luxury resort.

What about a girls’ trip? Whether it’s for a bachelorette party or a milestone birthday, where are some great places to celebrate with friends?

My current obsession for a group or celebration trip? Aldourie Castle, part of the Wildland portfolio I mentioned earlier. A 400-year-old castle on the banks of Loch Ness, pink-turreted, fully staffed, sleeping up to 24 across 12 suites with space for more in adjacent cottages, set within 500 acres of gardens, woodland and wildflower meadows. Private chef, daily housekeeping, a wine cellar or whisky snug, a sauna yurt hidden in the trees by the loch, a boathouse, a glasshouse. You arrive as guests and within about four hours you feel like you’ve always lived there. For a milestone birthday or a bachelorette with taste, I genuinely cannot think of anything better.

I’m so glad that you asked about milestone birthdays. I’ve been planning a lot of these lately. Part of my job is staying ahead of what’s opening, and one of the ways I do that is by attending carefully curated trade events that most travelers will never hear about. Earlier this year I attended Do Not Disturb, an extraordinarily exclusive gathering dedicated to private and seclusion-focused travel, and came away with a list of discoveries that I’m really excited about.

A few standouts: Dun Aluinn in the Scottish Highlands, a design-led nine-bedroom estate just 90 minutes from Edinburgh, fully staffed and utterly beautiful. Villa La Guettière on Cap d’Antibes, affiliated with and billed as a mini Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc. Nine bedrooms, private chef, infinity pool overlooking the Mediterranean, and full access to Hotel du Cap’s amenities including the Dior spa. Oka, the brand new nine-bedroom private villa from the Barracuda Group in Bahia, one of Brazil’s most special stretches of coastline, has an extraordinary Scandi-meets-Bahian aesthetic. Islas Secas in Panama, a private island archipelago with some of the best diving in the world. Lopud 1483, a restored 15th century Franciscan monastery on a tiny island off Dubrovnik where the Beckham family have been known to holiday. Opening this summer in Portugal’s countryside: Quinta Filippa, a 16-room estate that’s not exclusive use but could technically be bought out entirely. Farm-to-table dining, wellness, extraordinary sense of place. With the exception of Villa La Guettière, the rates across all of these are shockingly fair for what you get.

This is a selfish question, but can you give me some highlights for Cabo? It feels like there have been a ton of new hotels that have opened in the last few years, but I don’t know what’s great and what’s mid.

Cabo has exploded with new openings and the quality varies wildly, so it’s worth having someone help you navigate. For families, two tried-and-true properties stand out. Las Ventanas al Paraíso is genuinely exceptional. The programming for children and families is among the best I’ve seen anywhere, with activities that actually keep kids engaged rather than just babysat. And the Montage Los Cabos works beautifully for younger children in particular, with a shallow wading pool that tiny ones love. Both deliver that effortless, everything-handled feeling that you need when you’re traveling with kids.

I have a friend who is getting married this summer; do you have any non-cliche honeymoon destinations in mind?

How much time have you got?! I have a robust honeymoon business and as such, this question is nearly impossible to answer without knowing the couple. I’ve planned honeymoons to Italy, Japan, Costa Rica, Southeast Asia, Australia…

If I were taking a honeymoon today, I’d be looking seriously at Morocco and specifically the three Royal Mansour hotels. Marrakech is the original and still one of the finest hotels on the planet. Casablanca opened in 2024 in a restored 1950s Art Deco palace. It has completely different energy, is more cosmopolitan, but maintains the same extraordinary standard. Tamuda Bay, on the Mediterranean between Tetouan and Tangier, is the beachfront option. Three wildly different expressions of Morocco under one collection.

For a money-is-no-object option to bookmark for late 2026 or 2027: Fregate Island in the Seychelles is reopening after a complete rebuild. Fourteen private pool villas and three estates on a privately owned island. It’s one of the most anticipated reopenings in luxury travel, perhaps ever, and it is going to be extraordinary.

Also, I know this is so last-minute, but do you have any suggestions for spring break travel next month? Is it even possible to do it at this point if you haven’t planned ahead?

The three places where you simply must plan ahead for spring break are Hawaii, Mexico beach destinations, and the most popular parts of the Caribbean. If you have your heart set on one of these you should book that trip as soon as you know your kids’ school schedule. And don’t forget about flights! Everyone wants those coveted Saturday departures and they fill up fast.

One of the biggest trends I’m seeing is families choosing to spend spring or ski week holidays in European cities rather than beach destinations. This winter and spring I had clients in London, Edinburgh, Milan, Florence, Tuscany, Madrid, Seville and Lisbon, to rattle off just a few. My favorite Venice is a foggy Venice — a bit chilly, but moody and magical, and in my opinion far preferable to the steam heat and mosquitoes of summer. In February you can experience Carnivale, and I’m really enjoying planning trips around local festivities like this. The availability is there, the cities are at their most livable, and your kids will come home having experienced something totally new. Skiing in Europe is another amazing experience that will cost you heck of a lot less than a comparable US ski week.

Could we do a round of places you’d suggest as an alternative to more known destinations? Like if you like _____, instead try _____?

Instead of Ireland, try Scotland. Genuinely underexplored, dramatically beautiful, and Edinburgh is one of Europe’s great city breaks. Right now WildLand is doing something in the Highlands that simply doesn’t exist anywhere else in the world.

Instead of Mexico, consider Belize or Guatemala. The cenotes, the jungle and the ruins are all there — without the overtourism or the high nightly rates that have crept across much of the Yucatán.

Instead of Tokyo — or in addition to it — try Seoul or Hong Kong. Seoul is having its biggest cultural moment ever and is still genuinely underestimated by Western travelers. Hong Kong, meanwhile, has quietly become one of the world’s great luxury hotel cities again and is absolutely worth another look.

Instead of Capri, try Sardinia. The island is enormous — something for everyone, from wild coastline and prehistoric ruins to glitzy Porto Cervo and excellent family resorts. A wave of exciting new hotels is arriving in 2026, and Delta is launching a new nonstop from JFK to Olbia. It’s one of the most versatile islands in the Mediterranean and still wildly overlooked by American travelers.

I always ask about your go-to travel uniform, as I know mine evolves over time. What does yours look like these days?

I’m still married to wearing a pant and/or jacket with zip pockets on flights. You’re less likely to lose a boarding pass or lip balm when it’s zipped safely away. Adidas Beckenbauers are still my go-to, as is the Adidas Firebird track jacket, though not together, ever. One or the other, usually the pant, unless it’s too hot outside. Then it’s the Vuori women’s performance jogger or Uniqlo cotton relaxed ankle pants.

My travel shoe must slip on or off easily, so I swear by Birkenstocks of some sort. The Boston works well here, and I prefer a completely tonal option where the upper, buckle and sole are all one color, like this. Thick, comfy socks are still a must and Rototo are still my favorite. One of my packing hacks is to wear things that are almost worn out and leave them behind. Nothing that could be donated or reused, but socks and pajamas fit the bill here.

When in Rome I always hit Schostal, and I now have a lovely little collection of comfy cotton button-downs. They’re known for pajamas, but you can ask about the shirts, and they offer embroidered monograms which I think are so cute and chic. My last few purchases at Schostal have actually been knits, again they’re not always obviously on display, so just ask. I recently picked up the most gorgeous navy double-breasted heavy cotton cardigan that’s become a travel staple. It’s giving Audrey Hepburn vibes when paired with a slim cigarette pant and a ballet flat. Thanks in no small part to your leopard print newsletter suggestions, I was inspired to splurge on these flats, also purchased in Rome, because not only do Italian-made shoes cost less in Italy and Europe more generally, but you get a tax refund on top of that! I find myself shopping less and less in the States and waiting until I’m overseas for exactly this reason.

Also thanks to you, I finally relented and sprung for the Negative Underwear whipped tops. They’re not inexpensive, so I started with just one: your crewneck recommendation. I now also have the henley version, which I personally prefer. They are so versatile that I am now, for better or for worse, ruined for all other long-sleeve travel and layering tops. Fortunately I save a bit of money pairing them with a Uniqlo wireless ultra stretch bralette. (Looks like they’re on sale right now, but this is a carry-over style.)

I made the mistake of not packing a sleep mask on my last trip. I had daytime flights, I thought I didn’t need one. I was wrong. Never not bringing one again. In far north Scotland the days are already getting long, and I could have used it there as well as for napping on those daytime flights. Sadly, my new favorite is not at all cool. I read about it in The Strategist and purchased a rather garish blue color, because anything black I tend to lose or leave behind on the plane. (Click here, feel free to judge.) If you or any of your readers can help me find a version that’s slightly less hideous, ideally from a small vendor, I would be forever grateful.

For outerwear, I genuinely needed a new all-weather jacket and found one in Edinburgh. I saved a not insignificant amount purchasing this Paul Smith x Barbour Bedale waxed jacket in the UK.

Lastly, I don’t know what took me so long, but I finally ordered Bose noise-cancelling headphones in a smoky white color (never black, as mentioned). They’re a bit bulky and therefore mildly annoying to travel with, but so worth it.

If you’ve been reading this newsletter for a moment, you know that I was not into wearing trousers for the vast majority of my adult life, and only started buying them a couple of years ago. Well it’s been even longer for shorts. I don’t think I’ve purchased a pair since I was forced to buy a chino version from the Gap for USC Kappa rush in 2000, and even then I wore those shorts exactly once.

So imagine my surprise when I found myself purchasing a pair of linen shorts from Banana, and actually really loving them!?! I think I like these shorts because they have a wider, trouser-like leg, that’s similar to the slacks I’ve been loving, and that relaxed silhouette feels almost skirt-like. I’m wearing them here with a Banana Republic The Oversized Linen Shirt ($98) and my beloved Jamie Haller The Kit Slides ($660) which sold out so fast it boggles the brain and are worth every penny if you can get your hands on a pair (the waitlist is open). Oh wait, it looks like there’s a pair left at Shopbop in an 8; run!

The sleeper hit for me was Banana’s Two-Tone Leather Skinny Utility Belt ($35 on sale), which is almost half off right now and so dang cute. (All of their belts are quite good and worth taking a look at, IMHO.) As a matter of fact, I was really impressed with a ton of pieces at BR right now, especially from their linen shop. I also got a pair of their Barrel-Leg Linen Pull On Pants ($100) for spring break, which are insanely good on, and I’m kind of obsessed with the Embroidered Linen Drop Waist Maxi Dress ($260), too, which is giving Zimmermann at a fraction of the price. And don’t even get me started on the Viscose-Linen Palazzo Pants ($150), which are quite directional for Banana!

TRY: Saltyface Tanning Moisturizer ($48)

Okay, so normally I don’t write about products until I’ve tested them quite a bit, but I’m making an exception for this one, as we are so close to spring break and I’m also excited about it. I just got Saltyface’s gradual tanning moisturizer for the face, and I’m excited to try it, as someone who wears a bikini to the beach, but also SPF 50 and a wide-brimmed hat. I haven’t let sun hit my face intentionally since the early aughts, but I also want to look a little glowy, and I feel like this is going to be a great way to get that sun-kissed look without actual rays on my face. I’m going to cut it with regular moisturizer for the first couple of days, just to see the vibe, and will report back!
