And perhaps we would be more careful with one another.

A father who only knew how to express love through money, weather reports, or asking whether the car was working properly. A lover who typed “come back” and then deleted it because self-respect was watching. A friend who wanted to say, “You disappeared from me first,” but instead sent a birthday message with one too many exclamation marks.

We think relationships end in dramatic moments.

Often, they end in drafts.

A message typed too late. A reply made too polite. A truth softened so thoroughly that it becomes useless. A final paragraph deleted, leaving only: “No worries, I understand.”

That phrase should have its own cemetery.

There is also a strange vanity in unsent messages.

We like to imagine that our perfectly written paragraph would change everything.

But understanding is not only a matter of language.

Some people misunderstand you because they lack information.

Others misunderstand you because understanding would cost them too much.

It would require them to see themselves in an unflattering light. It would require them to admit that their version of the story depends on your silence. It would require them to become larger than their pride.

Not everyone wants that kind of growth.

Sometimes the unsent message protects us from the humiliation of giving our most carefully arranged truth to someone committed to misreading it.

This is where restraint becomes a form of self-respect.

Not the cold restraint of pretending not to care. That is only theatre.

I mean the deeper restraint: the ability to feel something fully without handing it to the wrong person simply because the feeling is too heavy to carry alone.

There is a difference between expression and surrender.

There is a difference between honesty and begging to be understood.

There is a difference between sending a message because it is true, and sending it because we want the other person to rescue us from the discomfort of our own clarity.

Sometimes we do not need to be answered.

Sometimes we need to be free.

And freedom, unfortunately, often arrives without a notification.

I have deleted many messages in my life.

Some deserved deletion immediately. They were too proud, too wounded, too dramatic in the particular way a tired heart can become theatrical when it has not eaten properly.

Some I regret deleting.

Not because sending them would have changed the result, but because there are moments when silence becomes a kind of betrayal of the self.

We are told to be graceful. To be mature. To let things go. To take the high road.

But the high road can become a very lonely place when we use it to avoid saying anything dangerous.

Grace is beautiful. But sometimes “grace” is simply fear wearing good manners.

I think many people, especially women, are trained to make pain attractive.

There is a specific kind of heartbreak that doesn’t come from losing a person, but from losing the hallucination you created of them.

We don’t talk about it enough, probably because it forces us to admit our own complicity in the disappointment. We prefer to say, “They changed,” or “They weren’t who I thought they were.” But the quiet, brutal truth of adulthood is that people rarely change, and they almost always show you exactly who they are within the first few weeks of knowing them.

The problem is not that they lied. The problem is that we were too busy falling in love with a phantom.

We call this phantom “potential.”

Very few people can genuinely say that.

So, instead of leaving when we encounter something we don’t accept, we stay and build a phantom. We fall in love with the idea of the man who finally learns how to communicate. We fall in love with the idea of the partner who eventually realizes our worth. We invest our time, our energy, and our youth into an empty plot of land, convinced that our sheer willpower will be enough to build a house on it.

But potential doesn’t keep you warm at night. Potential doesn’t answer the phone when you are in crisis. Potential is a ghost, and you cannot build a life with a ghost.

The most radical act of self-love you can commit is to completely eradicate the word “potential” from your romantic criteria.

There is a fantasy, as old as air travel itself. The Hollywood version. In the dimmed cabin lights, over the clink of ice in a glass, a shared, lingering glance between a passenger and a flight attendant blossoms into something more. It’s a story woven into the very fabric of travel - a tale of romance, of fleeting connection, of two worlds colliding in the sky.

And I understand why. The air up there is different. It’s a temporary, liminal space where the rules of the world below seem to fade away. The passenger, a vulnerable traveler putting their life in the hands of strangers. The flight attendant, a figure of calm authority and gentle care. It’s a powerful dynamic, and in that charged atmosphere, it’s easy for a simple kindness to be mistaken for the spark of something deeper.

But the reality of my job is far from a romantic film. It’s a world of safety procedures, of hundreds of people with hundreds of needs, of exhaustion that settles deep into your bones. It is a stage, and I am always on it.

I have a colleague, let’s call her Yuki. Years ago, she fell for “the Prince of Seat 3A.” He was handsome, charming, and they had an undeniable connection during a flight to London. He left her a note, and it turned into a whirlwind of postcards from cities he visited for work and late-night calls across time zones. She was in love with the idea of him. But the reality of a life lived out of a suitcase, of missed calls and lonely nights, was a turbulence their connection couldn’t withstand. The romance, she told me, was in the longing, not in the logistics.

As for my own experience... have I ever felt that spark? Of course. I am human, after all.

There have been moments. A shared, silent understanding in a look that lasts a second too long. A hand that brushes mine during the meal service, sending an unexpected jolt of electricity through me. A note left on a napkin with a phone number and a simple, heartfelt compliment.

These are the beginnings of a hundred beautiful, unfinished novels. I read the first page, I feel the thrill of the potential story, and then I gently close the book. Because my life has taught me that my true purpose in the sky is not to be a character in someone else’s love story.

The most profound intimacy I have ever shared with a passenger wasn’t romantic at all. It was holding the hand of a terrified elderly man during a rough patch of turbulence over the Atlantic, his knuckles white in mine, his eyes closed, just needing to know he wasn’t alone. It was sharing a quiet, knowing smile with a young woman on her way to study abroad, her face a mix of terror and exhilarating hope.

That, to me, is the real romance of the sky. It is not about finding love for a night or a lifetime. It is about the privilege of being a brief, safe harbor in the middle of someone else’s journey. It is a connection that is fleeting, anonymous, and yet, in its own way, perfect.

Every frequent flyer knows the feeling. The sudden jolt, the dip in altitude, the nervous ripple that flows through the cabin. For most, it’s a moment of anxiety, a loss of control.

But for us, the cabin crew, the first signal isn’t the jolt. It’s a quiet, coded message from the cockpit. A specific chime that you might not notice, or a quick call over the interphone: “Cabin crew, please take your seats for turbulence.”

Instantly, a silent, practiced ballet begins.

It’s a race against the clock, and every second counts. We don’t just “put things away.” We secure 300-pound service carts, ensuring every brake is engaged and every latch is locked. We check that the ovens are off and secured. We pour out pots of hot coffee and water that could become dangerous projectiles. It’s a swift, methodical sweep of our domain to neutralize any potential hazard.

Then, a final walk through the cabin. We’re not just looking for unbuckled seatbelts. We’re looking at your faces. We make a mental note of the anxious traveler in 22B who might need a reassuring word later, or the child in 15C who is looking excited, not scared.

Only then do we take our jumpseats and strap ourselves in. But our work doesn’t stop. In that moment, as a passenger, you feel the shaking. As crew, you learn to listen to it.

The aircraft speaks a language, and we are trained to be fluent. We can tell the difference between the normal groans of the fuselage flexing (as it’s designed to do) and a sound that’s out of place. We listen for the rattle of an unsecured latch in an overhead bin, or the sound of something shifting in the galley. We are the ears of the aircraft at the cabin level.

And we continue to watch. We watch the way the wings handle the stress. We watch our fellow crew members across the aisle, communicating with just a subtle nod or a raised eyebrow: “All good on your side?” “All good.” We watch you, the passengers, offering a calm smile if we happen to make eye contact. We are trained to be the calm in the storm, and that is a job we do even when seated.

The moment the captain turns off the seatbelt sign, our ballet begins again, but in reverse. Carts are unlocked, service resumes, and our first priority is a slow walk down the aisle to check on anyone who seemed particularly distressed.

Turbulence itself isn’t the main event for us. It is a focused, intense period of work that most people never see. It’s a moment where all our training - safety, procedural, and human - comes together. And there’s a strange, profound beauty in that quiet competence.

Most of you know me in one of two roles. The first is the flight attendant in a pristine uniform, with a polite smile, the one who wishes you a pleasant flight. The second is the curious traveler you see in photos from different cities, with a cup of coffee against the backdrop of another landmark.

But there is a third version of me. The one that almost no one sees. The one who emerges only after the hotel room door clicks shut.

This woman doesn’t wear a uniform. She wears soft cashmere and the whisper of silk stockings against her skin - not for anyone else, but for the quiet luxury of feeling like herself. She doesn’t answer a hundred questions or serve drinks. She pours herself a glass of wine and puts on music that only she can hear.

This woman isn’t lonely. She is simply... private. In these hours, the mask of serene professionalism comes off, and all that remains is her. Tired, real, vulnerable, and strong all at once.

Tonight, on the evening after my 43rd birthday, I wanted to introduce you to her. The woman who exists in the unseen hours.
